Now that we’ve all seen the “this Asides is going to be a Little Different” tweet and collectively lost our damn minds, I would like to propose some things that I would like it to be

Character!Thomas just isn’t there. It’s a discussion purely between the Sides in the ~mindscape~

deleted scene(s)- something that happened during a “main” episode that we didn’t get to see. For example, whatever might have happened between Logan and Janus in POF

That tweet about the sides vlogging. You know the one. Please that would be so awesome

One of those episodes where we see multiple people recount the same event/conversation and give wildly conflicting accounts. Every subsequent narration slowly makes the “truth” more apparent, but some things are left ambiguous

Some combination of the above. A few of these would mesh pretty well

Remus staring intently into the camera playing “Never Gonna Give You Up” on the kazoo

The Sides react to early season 1 and die inside

The Sides read fanfiction of themselves and die inside (except Remus he’s having the time of his life)

Logan practicing summoning and messing up in increasingly ridiculous ways. This culminates into Janus’s hat flying out of nowhere, and he pops in absolutely furious bc he thought Roman stole it again

Ethics class a la The Good Place with Patton and Janus (and Logan, I would hope. He’s not an ethics expert but he would know how the principles Patton and Janus come up with would work in real life) figuring out how to guide Thomas’s moral code.

That’s all I have for now. Obviously some of these are much more serious/plausible than others but I had fun with the dumb joke scenarios too

I’m on a roll now

Logan and Roman’s relationship is so interesting.

They don’t have an ounce of self-esteem between them, but they’re easily the most egocentric of the Sides

They’re both jealous of the other; Logan seems frustrated that he can’t actually create anything, just edit and refine Roman’s ideas, while Roman appears to envy Logan’s consistency

They seek validation from the other (Roman more explicitly, but Logan definitely wants Roman’s approval) while also putting the other down ruthlessly

They hit each other where it hurts the most. Logan insults Roman’s whole function and, as a result, perpetuates his perfectionism/self-worth issues, while Roman insinuates that Logan isn’t helpful/as important, which doesn’t do wonders for Logan’s self-worth either

Frustrate each other easily; they have opposing functions and goals- can and will fight at the drop of a hat

They both use notecards, even if Roman’s don’t show up nearly as often

Both dramaticTM and quick to anger, even if Logan refuses to acknowledge it

Language!!! Logan may be the ~primary director of Thomas’s language center~, but I take that to mean Logan knows the mechanics of English, while Roman excels with metaphors and imagery. Logan is the core understanding, and Roman applies it (although neither are perfect)

Logan understands shades of gray, Roman... doesn’t. Roman understands how his suboptimal emotional state is making him lash out and hurt the others, Logan... doesn’t.

I just saw one of those studyblr posts that was all “describe your type of student” and the options were stuff like:

~writing an essay by the crackling fire in your favorite well-worn cotton sweater~

~sipping a coffee, sitting in the library and feeling your heart swell as you fall in love with your education~

These options are a vibe (I guess) but they’re completely unrealistic. I’d like to represent the real students out here with some vibes of my own :

Hi I love Logan so here’s a list of his biggest(?) flaws in no particular order bc as much as I stan I must not delude myself

1. He’s pretty judgmental. It stems from some Super Fun Self-Esteem Issues but that doesn’t change the fact that he repeatedly insults Patton’s intelligence/equates his sillyness to childishness and naïveté and unintentionally criticized Roman to the point of making him even more insecure somehow. That’s Not Good, ok????

2. He has le Big Ego. ���I know I’m smarter than everyone else.” Like, yeah, in some ways, but you need to recognize that there are lots of forms of intelligence, my guy. Also that moment in Accepting Anxiety Part 2 where Logan balks at Patton for saying Thomas listening to him (Logan) too much could be a bad thing when that literally happened in Growing Up and was a bad thing. Hm. He also has a really hard time admitting that he was wrong ever. Stubborn boyo :/

3. He’s controlling. Logan feels like he’s not listened to enough, so when he gets the reigns he goes way too hard. See Growing Up and ESPECIALLY Moving On pt 1. He completely ignores Patton’s hesitance and strongarms everyone into going to Patton’s room (although I don’t think he really understood the depth of Patton’s sadness and probably wouldn’t have done it if he had). He seems to have grown beyond that pretty significantly by DWIT though. Yay Logan. He’s also controlling with himself- forces himself to operate in this super strict parameter of what Logic “should be”

4. Absolutely fucking horrible at introspection. Due to his ego and his ideas about how he should function as Logic, I’m pretty sure Lo thinks he has himself figured out. Obviously that’s complete bullshit lmao. Logan is so fucking terrible at understanding his own feelings (or even admitting that he HAS any like DAMN) and that usually ends with him lashing out and NOT UNDERSTANDING WHY PATTON PLEASE HELP THIS IDIOT IM BEGGING YOU-

yo it’s big brain time (not really lmao I just think I might have noticed something??)

So, we all know The Nod from Janus to Roman in POF, right? The moment our hearts were ripped in half and bled all over the floor, that nod?

Most people seem to agree that Janus wasn’t lying- Thomas still sees Roman as his hero. I almost completely agree with this interpretation.

But.

When Janus nodded, he meant that no, Roman isn’t Thomas’s hero anymore. Not in the way that he was when Thomas was a kid. The theme of POF is that morals and principles have to adapt as we get older. Janus himself is symbolic of understanding and embracing shades of gray. Roman isn’t Thomas’s fairytale hero anymore. And that’s good. We’ve seen the pressure Roman puts on himself, we’ve seen how being viewed as the hero is damaging him (the impossible standards, the black and white morality, etc). It prevents Roman from growing, from facing his flaws without feeling like a total failure.

That’s what Janus meant. Roman’s not a hero, and it’s ok. But Roman is too hurt and volatile to understand that. For now.

More small-ish Logan angst moments because why not

1.

It always struck me as a little odd that Janus had to prompt Logan to share his own opinion in the courtroom scene. Patton, Virgil, Roman, and Janus himself were all quite vocal about what they wanted for themselves as well as Thomas, but Logan only spoke from Thomas’s perspective until Janus specifically asked “what are your thoughts on the matter?”. Logan always puts Thomas first, even if it doesn’t always seem like it. Logan had no problem revealing his calendar with the callback scheduled, but said his bit about how “having two less* (friends) wouldn’t be so bad” under his breath. It’s like he was weary of Patton and Virgil hearing and berating him/making him out to be part of the “problem”.

*Logan made a grammatical error here. He should have said “fewer”, not “less”. This is in line with him occasionally making those kinds of mistakes (remember “conversate”??? :D)

Also also I think Lo was so stiff/serious during his time on the stand bc it was Very Important so he was going to be Professional and that’s honestly kind of adorable

2.

I’ve mentioned this briefly before, but Logan’s first line in DWIT is “what do you need?” He knows he was only summoned because Roman felt like he had no other choice. :(((( And then Patton and Virgil immediately shut him down when he tried to help (yknow, until he finally persuaded them to listen... to Thomas)

3.

ONE COMPLIMENT FROM THOMAS MAKES LOGANS ENTIRE WEEK(?)!!! I don’t know how long the gap was btwn DWIT and the Asides but LOGAN’S STILL SO HAPPY ABOUT IT IN THE ASIDES

4.

This one might be a reach sorry. But at the v beginning of POF, Logan states that dealing with regret and ~stuff in the past~ “isn’t really [his] area of expertise”. Because he did try to deal with the past in Moving On and kind of fucked up. So now he’s minimizing his participation to avoid making that same mistake...

5.

The whole Logan and Roman fight in LNTAO that we can only understand in the bonus clip at the end of that one bloopers vid. I kinda forget which one :/ This does not mean all of Logan’s actions in LNTAO were completely ok or anything but it really makes me feel for him- Roman was going off on Logan, repeatedly insulting/interrupting him, and Logan didn’t lash out. He was stuttering and trying to come up with a way to defend himself (and uttered a few insults himself in the process) but no one else was listening. Throwing the paper ball at Roman was a result of Logan finally hitting his breaking point. He had kept himself composed for a decently long time without getting outwardly mad, we just don’t see it. And Patton, Virgil, and Thomas assume Logan lashing out was a v immediate thing when it kind of wasn’t.

6.

This last one is less of an angst moment and more of an angsty observation. Logan’s literal nature is a huge roadblock for him when he tries participate in emotional discussions. This is shown pointedly in the Asides with the bridge metaphor- Logan misses the beginning and assumes that the others are talking about a literal crumbling bridge, which very slightly hindered his ability to offer any useful advice on the situation. No one bothered to explain it to him afterword because they had already reached a tenuous resolution. I love when characters take things literally bc it’s hilarious (like Peridot) but that moment in the Asides wasn’t really played for humor imo. It was there to point out Logan’s inability to communicate effectively in certain situations. Virgil even has this whole bit about how “[Logan’s] so literal I don’t know what [he’s] asking” I feel like this will probably come into play later...

[and it also fuels my angsty hc that the Sides will be having a very intense discussion that starts delving into hella metaphors, and when someone (Virgil, maybe?) finally asks for Logan’s thoughts Logan will have to admit he has no fucking idea what they’re talking about (bonus angst: at this point, Logan gets that they’re using metaphors but he still can’t apply them to the current situation, which makes him even more frustrated bc he should be smart enough to figure this out but He Can’t. ok I’m done w my self-indulgent angsty bullshit lol)]

7.

So I listened to all of the Side tracks and I thought I’d make a quick summary of each for those who are debating checking them out.

people who say “but these playlists have been out forever” you’re right but I’m fashionably late

They’re listed in order of my personal preference (sorry Virge)

Virgil’s Playlist:

the second-longest at 1h 13 min

pretty much exactly what you’d expect in terms of music- predominantly emo/rock songs

most of the songs seem to be about his past with the Dark Sides and his journey over the course of the series

in my opinion, Virgil’s offers the least new information about his character, as the songs don’t give us much we didn’t already know/wasn’t already implied

my personal favorite songs were Be Calm, Sally’s Song, and Ignorance

my least favorite was Sunrise, Sunset

Even if it was my least-favorite playlist overall, it’s still pretty fun to listen to bc it lowkey slaps

Patton’s Playlist:

the shortest at 1hr 4min

passes the vibe check with acoustic guitar, nostalgia, soft/soothing songs- aura of calm

gives perspective on Patton’s character and outlook on life; there were songs about his tendency to assume the best in people, the love/concern he has for the other Sides, the battles he’s currently fighting with himself/how he’s processing POF, and how he feels about his past mistakes

Like Virgil, there’s not a ton of new information, but Patton’s playlist definitely deepened my understanding and appreciation of him

my favorite song by far was Sad (not really because it was about Virgil- I just really liked the song)

I didn’t have a least-favorite song :D

but if you’re someone who likes stimulating/high-energy music, this is not the playlist for you

Remus’s Playlist

the second-shortest at 1h 5min (you thought the colors would correspond to the Side in question, but they’re actually according to length sorry)

as you would expect, this playlist is... odd. It doesn’t stick as tightly to one genre as V and Pat did. I’m atrociously bad at identifying genres but uhh it has alt pop, rock, and lots of synth/electro-pop stuff idk I’m bad at this

Remus’s playlist basically boils down to the recognition that he’s the only Side who’s truly free, and he revels in it. Also he and Roman definitely have some stuff to work out jeez

It’s also really, really funny. I laughed a lot and I was super entertained listening to it because it’s so bizarre and not-PG and Remus

My favorite songs were In The Room Where You Sleep, Ben Bernanke, Tranz, and Don’t Stop Me Now

Logan’s playlist has a clearly defined arc(!!) It tells a story that will likely be mirrored in the series proper- Logan’s feelings of being ignored come to a tipping point and he lashes out big-time before he finally begins to accept who he is and stop forcing himself to fit the narrow role of “Logic”

I understand Logan’s thought process more now, I think. What really got me, though, was how much vulnerability his song choices seemed to show, especially in the last few songs or so (I’m rhyming :D)

My favorite songs were Algorhythm, The Watchtower, Streaks, One More Time With Feeling, and Time Adventure

my least favorites were Fitter Happier and Human (the latter mostly bc it’s really, reallllly long)

like Logan, there’s some hidden vulnerability that comes to the surface and it’s so wonderful. Janus has always seen himself as the protector at odds with the “Light Sides”, and now that he’s been accepted he doesn’t really know how to deal with the change
