Dekus no good, very bad, faceplant into masculinity and internalized homophobia

I made this a thought post from chapter 402 originally, but I can’t let these thoughts fester any longer. Gotta be correct about it 🫶🫶🫶

Alright so when I originally talked about this on a couple of platforms (not just tumblr, tiktok too and a bit on Twitter that has no connection to this account lmao) I feel like people told me that I was “stretching” with my assumptions.

But then Toga’s backstory being told to Ochako was… directly referenced to a queer allegory. And in 394, she directly says that she likes girls. It’s the thing said last, implying it’s something she’s still ashamed of feeling.

This chapter basically confirmed in my mind that Himiko’s blood quirk was the equivalent to the homophobia that was probably in her own household. And in my mind, that means that blood quirk = metaphor on her queer experience.

And then suddenly, the pieces clicked into place.

In 348, Izuku disagrees with Himiko and Ochako’s ideals—not only at the idea of girly romance, but also at unconventional romance.

Ochako has distanced herself due to Izuku’s inability to confront his own feelings. Shown both physically and metaphorically.

Ochako took all the steps to walk away because from Izuku. Because Izuku held her back.

Or more rather, she realized that Izuku was no allmight, but rather just an average boy in need of saving as anyone else. He is someone who’s flaws cannot align with Ochako’s own ideals for a relationship.

Because ochako is weird.

Izuku holds her back. She can’t be everything she needs to be while around him.

And that’s something Izuku’s not going to understand, not like how she needs him to understand.

And Himiko knows who Ochako is on a more fundamental level than Izuku ever will, and that’s okay.

I feel like whenever I talk about these character flaws having to do with Izuku, it almost sounds like I’m bashing him? I swear, I’m not, it makes complete sense as to why he is this way. And there are people (Katsuki) in the world who can have this in a relationship under the right communication, and some people can’t. And that’s just how we exist. That’s okay. We don’t all have to be compatible with everyone.

Back to the main point, the pieces and the people putting those pieces together were starting to see their parallels.

Even the manga placement parallels them, especially with how clever I feel horikoshi can be with his paneling.

Looking down, looking up. Both three quarter angles. Small mouth expression, big mouth expression. And that blush.

Fake smile when unhappy. Falling for someone who is dying, who you’d do anything for, even toe the line of death defending them, fixing them—just because you can’t help but love someone you wish had walked into your life sooner (or in Izuku’s case, accepted into your life sooner).

Someone you’d sacrifice for. Someone you’re violent for. Someone you’d kill for.

Someone you’d rather let an entire population of people die for than live without.

Someone you’re undeniably, unequivocally, selfish for.

And yet Izuku doesn’t recognize his same symptoms of love through Himiko Toga as Ochako does.

Himiko must be dehumanized to Izuku, because if she’s a person, then she is him.

(What’s even more interesting about this panel, is that if the characters were reversed and it was about Izuku’s violent feelings over protecting Katsuki, danger sense would be going off constantly. So toga is the perfect counter, but Izuku is the ultimate weakness.)

So, okay, how exactly do these things matter? How does this have to do with Izuku’s own personal struggle over his masculinity?

I think what’s important to clarify here is that when I say “internalized homophobia”, I don’t mean that he necessarily is beating himself up over the fact that he likes a boy instead of a girl.

I think it’s connected to his fear of rejection, and his own personal issues having to do with remaining a “strong man” instead of a “weak man”.

Izuku may not believe that liking men is anyone’s business but his own, but does Katsuki think that?

Izuku has called his feelings of admiration gross. Not that he himself is an awful person for feeling them, but that Katsuki will be the one to think they’re gross. And he’s worked so hard to get to this point in their relationship, he doesn’t wanna let it go over some stupid feelings.

And this is where toga comes into the picture, his parallels between her, because just how is Toga supposed to know that Ochako isn’t judging her for her feelings? Technically, all of the things she’s said before the final fight between them have only proved the inevitable. That Toga is gross, a freak, a predator, a danger, because she loves a woman.

How is Izuku supposed to interpret being called a stalker by Katsuki? How is he supposed to interpret when people call him creepy for his muttering and analyzation? How is he supposed to interpret being called a crybaby by his idol, Katsuki, and everyone else when he cannot control that?

How can he handle feelings that are out of his control, and still believe that they’re okay?

And at the very least, even if homophobia doesn’t exist in mha, heteronormativity does. Especially shown through Ashido, a straight girl.

None of that is necessarily Allmight, Katsuki, or even Ochako’s fault, because of course they’re just teasing him—but it doesn’t change the fact that it affects how he perceives himself.

So when I say that Izuku has problems with internalized homophobia, I mean that he is afraid of how the people around him will perceive him, than a constant feeling of self hatred due to not liking women.

And when I say that his internalized homophobia is an extension of his masculinity, I mean that because he has no confidence in himself and his more vulnerable emotions, he is unable to accept what or who he is. This ofc affects the people around him, like saying that Ochako CANT be weird because she’s just “so amazingly normal” without realizing that he’s just downplaying who she is and what she thinks, or dehumanizing the most openly queer character in the series because it benefits the perception he has of himself, or even silently rejecting Katsuki’s feelings simply out of a need to “control his heart and control his quirk”.

In Izuku’s mind, the only way to keep Katsuki is to not be the weird kid he was in his childhood. In a way, Izuku is still performing for Katsuki.

Actually, now I'm thinking about it, it's odd to me that Midoriya and Uraraka look similar and maybe that's on purpose.

Round eyes & face

Facial marks (Freckles for Midoriya, blush stickers for Uraraka)

"Brunette" (green hair is considered being a brunet/te in anime logic)

Shorter than the others

Now given that, what if Uraraka "falling in love" with Midoriya wasn't her actually falling in love? What if it was her having a self-reflection and accepting herself?

Further thinking about it... they're practically the same person.

They're both compassionate, kind. They learn to adapt to changes. They're cute, but they're vicious if pushed far enough. They won't give up on people or in a fight. Hell, they both float, use long range attacks, and close range ones. Works in teams of three (Uraraka-Asui-Hado, Midoriya-Bakugou-Todoroki) under a top Pro Hero.

And they both "rival" some feral blond that they don't act "normal" around.

What if Midoriya wasn't meant to be Uraraka's crush but her mirror? Mind you whenever someone points out her "crush" it's not someone you would turn to for love advice.

Aoyama is Aoyama (think about that reveal), Ashido practically ships anybody with anybody when there's no real chemistry, and Toga has a twisted concept of love.

You really think I would trust any of them on telling me I have a "crush"?

There's also the fact that Uraraka herself during her talk with Midoriya says they're both "oddballs". That whole talk during 342 comes off more as someone talking about their feelings about their identity and relating to a friend who feels the same about themselves than supposedly "romantic". When someone is called an "oddball", it means that person is "weird". They're not part of the "norm".

Sometimes it comes off as having different interests, like someone liking the arts unlike the majority of the group who likes sports.

Or it's someone who identifies as queer.

What if these last few chapters of Toga and Uraraka was Uraraka accepting herself?

@darkcircles4lyfe points out a detail that I didn't catch until now in this post here.

In this scene, Toga has a hold of that All Might keychain. We know it's of importance to Uraraka because Midoriya gave it to her. We also know that once before Uraraka snatched it away from her when Toga first got a hold of it during the PLF War Arc. Here, she doesn't do it. Granted, because she's bang the hell up and probably even isn't aware of her surroundings. But on Horikoshi's part, what if that's on purpose? What if here, Toga is taking the keychain as a way of saying Uraraka is finally accepting herself and her feelings? That Midoriya was that mirror she kept looking into and questioning until this very moment?

And let's be honest here, it's not like Horikoshi isn't incapable of writing M/F ships. I just think IzuOcha is a ship he doesn't intend to make romantic because of how underdeveloped it is.

Compare it to Kamijirou and Kirimina, it is pale. Also, make note of those two pairs.

The characters in those ships also have opposing physical features.

Kamijirou - dark and light hair colors, the extrovert and the introvert

Kirimina - Spiky hair and curly hair, sharp edges and round curves

A lot of pairs Horikoshi puts together in which the characters are close (romantic or platonic) have some opposing features to them.

Gentle Crimimal and La Brava - tall and short, dark hair and light hair, one is more hands on and the other isn't

Eraser Head & Present Mic - quiet and loud, dark hair and light hair, close combat & long range

Bakugou's and Jiro's parents - quiet & loud, dark hair and light hair

It's his shtick.

But for Midoriya and Uraraka? They are just genderbend versions of each other!

That's really all I have to say here. And if you disagree, fine. Don't care for the input though, keep it to yourselves. (I say this because some of you are just damn disrespectful.)

I myself don't think IzuOcha is a bad ship, but I just don't think it's a ship Horikoshi has on his agenda. Let alone wants the audience to perceive them as "romantic" but as a "mirror".

And you of course accept, who wouldn’t? However the classes are at the Ua college campus, which means you will meet a lot of new people.

Yandere Shigaraki who becomes obsessed falls for you after you return his headphones that he had forgotten in class one day. He has had his eyes on you for a while and became interested quickly, I mean who wouldn’t when you have that sweet sweet smile. He was a few classes above you, but you heard a rumor that he skipped a few grades because of how smart he was, but also because his dad was apparently a very powerful and dangerous man with a lot of influence. But that didn’t bother you, because they were just rumors, right? There were lots of other rumors too about him; that he had a nasty and aggressive personality, that he was an incel, that he didn’t care about anyone. But none of that seemed to be true, sure he could be a bit cold or aggressive at times but he was a good person overall, so why would all the other rumors about him or his family be true?

Yandere Toya Todoroki who is known as the popular rich boy with good looks. His soft looking white hair and piercing blue eyes has made every girl on campus fall for him. And the piercings gave him a sort of bad-boy look, which made him practically every girls dream guy. He could have any girl he wanted, if it wasn’t for his personality and focus on school. He never fully changed to dabi here, so a big part of him still wants to impress and get his fathers attention. He does his best -and more- at school in hopes his father will praise him and one day give him the family company/business. There is no time for girls or parties, and if he did have time for a girl she would have to be perfect. Someone who his dad would approve of, someone who would make him, the company and family look good. And you are just what he is looking for.

Yandere Keigo Takami, close friends (if not best friends) with Toya. But unlike his friend, he doesn’t mind a few parties and girls here and there. But they are never serious. Sure, he is more laid back and playful than most of his classmates, but he still needs good grades. So that he can support his family (mom & dad) one day. And if he did find a girl, she would have to be the one.

Yandere Toga, who is going to be your roommate later when you start college. She is a year older than you and because of that has been given the job to take care of you and show you around. Make you feel comfortable and welcomed. And she does her best. At first she didn’t take you or her new responsibilities that seriously, but after a week or two she did. I mean, you were just sooo cute and understood her weird humor. She felt as though she could be herself around you and not be judged. You were like a breath of fresh air. And you feel the same way about her too, right? Because that’s how the absolute best of friends feel around each other, and you guys are best friends forever.

You’d always had particularly painful cycles, but this one was by far the worst. Nothing helped. After about half an hour, he came back with a heating pad, takeout, and a sad, ratty stuffed animal that looked like it had been forcibly wrenched out of a claw machine. He didn’t say anything at all; he didn’t have to. He simply left everything on the table, ruffled your hair, and walked back to whatever meeting the rest of the League was having. Dabi was never super sappy. Words meant nothing to him. People could say whatever they wanted, but, at the end of the day, words were empty; words didn’t always match actions. He preferred to do things instead.

The heating pad did next to nothing, but you were thankful for the food considering you could barely stand, so you didn’t have to leave the couch. Nonetheless, everyone went about the day as normal. There was some sort of mission, that you were obviously excused from, and, soon the day was drawing to a close.

…

You couldn’t sleep. You had no idea what time it was. You were just laying on your side, knees pulled up to your chest, eyes glued to the screen watching the late-night adult cartoons. The hideout had gone quiet, and you assumed everyone had turned in.

You hear the click of boots along the creaky floorboards getting closer and closer before you feel a hand on your shoulder and hot breath in your ear.

“You didn’t think I’d let you go to bed without me, did you?” Toya chuckles darkly before kissing your temple.

“Come on. Sit up,” He grunts, softly shoving your arm. You grimace before wordlessly shaking your head as another wave of incessant cramps strikes.

“Hey!” You protest before he clicks it off, shrouding the room in darkness, save for the thin, grim light of the street lamps leaking in through the window.

“I’ll carry you if I have to,” He says flatly, but you don’t budge. Dabi snorts, and you suddenly feel his arms around you in the dark, lifting you up and cradling you close to his chest. He’s warm. Much warmer and much more comfortable than the heating pad.

“Really? All that, and it won’t let up?” Dabi raises his eyebrow after listening to your rant about the abhorrent agony you’ve been wrestling with all day.

“Not even a little,” you groan, clutching your stomach. The two of you were in bed now. Well, Dabi’s bed. Nonetheless, you two might as well be sharing his room with how often you’re in it.

He chews his bottom lip, as if lost in thought, before his eyebrows raise.

“You know,” He murmurs, his eyes slowly becoming half-lidded as he looks you up and down, slowly sliding his hand up your thigh and resting at your hips. “There’s still one thing you haven’t tried.”

A/N: this is my second time posting MHA content and idek what made me wanna write this but I’ve been in a Dabi mood ever since watching “Dabi’s dance” lol. I hope I captured his character well since this is the first time I’ve ever written for him :o

The league liked to say you two were dating, though you were fairly certain that he didn’t see it that way at all

“Wasn’t the heroes… some grimy group of wanna be thugs.”

“Wanna be thugs but they fucked you up like this?”

He was fuming, hand griping your forearm tightly as you tried to move away from him

“They caught me off guard, one of ‘em had a powerful quirk. It doesn’t matter now, they’re dead.”

That gave him some satisfaction but not nearly enough

“Did you make them suffer?”

You cracked a smile despite the pain radiating through your body “Of course I did.”

That night you saw a side of him you didn’t think he had, it was quiet and gentle as he tended to your wounds.

Protective even, that night he had kept you close to his side as you slept.

For once in his life, his blinding hatred was subsiding just a bit, enough to let some other emotion seep out.

Ochako’s Confession: A Togachako Analysis

I don't usually write down or post analysis, but if I didn't put this down somewhere I was at risk of grabbing a stranger off the street and asking whether they knew about the doomed toxic yuri in hit manga series My Hero Academia.

Now, I think it was expected to some degree that Uraraka would have some big cathartic confession where she finally embraced her feelings for Izuku. And while she did admit her feeelings, the moment wasn't... that

And honestly, why would it be? In the end, Uraraka had no reason to confess her feelings. She didn't suffer from hiding them, on the contrary. Her crush was beginning to hinder her performance as a Hero, and all bottling them up did was help her improve. Sure, suppression is bad and all but ultimately, Uraraka seemed better off pushing her feelings aside. Especially when compared to Toga, who literally broke under the pressure of her hidden feelings. There was nothing pushing Uraraka to confess other than the vague sentiment that “suppressing your feelings is Bad.”

Yet, the importance of being open about your feelings is repeatedly emphasized during Toga's and Uraraka's arcs. It's what drove Toga to villainy, and something she tried to bond with Uraraka over. Something they shared. So the setup for a confession is there, but no satisfying resolution.

That's cause Izuku is a red herring.

Indeed, being honest about her feelings was vital for Uraraka, but it had nothing to with Izuku. Because the feelings Uraraka was suppressing all along, the ones that she needed to let out, were her feelings for Toga.

The envy she felt during their first meeting, how lovely she found Toga's smile. How much it troubled Uraraka when it was replaced with tears. Girl likes boy is as conventional as it gets. But a Hero sympathizing for a Villain in a society that dehumanizes them? Now that makes Uraraka kind of weird. And she knows it, that these thoughts go against everything she knows about society, about her role as a Hero. So she tried pushing all that away.

But she can't run from her feelings forever. And in the end, it's those feelings that allow Uraraka to save the day. Her arc deals with humanization. She wonders "who saves Heroes" until she's wondering "who saves Villains?" and finds that in this case, the answer is each other.

How did Uraraka and Toga save each other? By imitating each other, by being like someone they love.

Uraraka envied Toga's unapologetic openness, so she took a page from her book and told her everything she had been hiding and mulling over since they met. She stopped pushing Toga away and finally answered every one-sided conversation they've had. They're chatting about love, and Uraraka is finally responding.

A girl's feelings can change the world, and Uraraka being honest about her feelings is what allowed her to reach Toga's heart and save her. This is how Uraraka became a Hero.

Toga also saved Uraraka by imitating her. In a very literal sense by Transforming into Uraraka (being "cute" like Uraraka) but I think also in the way she used her Quirk. Until now, Toga believed the only way for her to live freely was through violence. When her Quirk awakened, Toga used Zero Gravity to kill. But now, she's imitating Uraraka on a deeper level. Uraraka who said her Quirk isn't made to hurt people, so Toga used her own Quirk to save Uraraka. For the first time, she realized she could love and be loved without violence.

Uraraka and Toga's confrontation was the long awaited end of a conversation. Nearly a year before Toga had tried to bond with Uraraka, asked her whether she liked someone, whether she wanted to be like them? Uraraka finally confessed: Yes, I want to be like you.

I love the league! Toga and shigaraki easily top ten characters for me in the series, same with spinner. The fan stuff people make where the lov is all happy and play video games together is very "avengers all live in the tower and get along" and I mean that in the most positive way, I love seeing things where they're bffs or living out the found family trope they deserve

Shigaraki specifically is like,, a poor wet cat left out in the rain to me. I want him to have a good ending so bad. I just have to live vicariously through my "inko adopts tenko and he is loved like he was deserved to be loved" which I really want to draw more of lol

shigaraki is the leader of the league of villains. he doesn’t have time for an omega that would surely demand his attention every second of everyday.

but then you wander into the hideout with the burnt rat man and the middle schooler and i guess you aren’t that bad to look at

he’s pretty much immediately intrigued by you and your scent

won’t admit it though, obviously

not even to himself

he convinces himself that he’s just really annoyed by you and that’s why he keeps staring at you

dabi calls him out on his bullshit though

shigaraki tells him to go die

then you get hurt during the attack on the training camp and he goes ape shit

will not leave your side and has threatened to disintegrate anyone who gets close to you

also bears his fangs at every alpha dabi who looks at you

it makes him realize that he absolutely doesn’t want you with any other alpha but him

so he starts scenting you

shigaraki smells of cedar wood but you can also always detect the dry powder-y smell of dust on him

it’s a very nice scent when he rubs it off on you but is quick to turn sharp when he gets protective over you

he never officially asks to court you but you pick up on it when he starts scenting you and also agrees to scent a blanket for you

he also never pushes you away when you climb into his lap to snuggle up to him

he’ll act annoyed about it, especially when you’re around other people, but actually really likes knowing that you’re safe and with him

dabi teases the shit out of him for “going soft” which earns him the middle finger from both of you

after you become his omega, he really doesn’t like you going out on missions anymore

if you insist on it, he’ll still let you but he’ll be grumpy about it the entire time

will say that it’s because omegas shouldn’t do dangerous shit like that and it has nothing to do with him wanting to keep you specifically safe but everyone knows that’s bullshit, he let’s toga go on missions without a problem

now what he really doesn’t like is you being alone around other alphas and he won’t budge on that

eventually, he trusts dabi enough to keep an eye on you during missions or just if he can’t be there but that took years of working together and him officially claiming you

overall, shigaraki is a very attentive alpha when it comes to your physical needs but he kinda sucks at the whole emotions and feelings stuff so you’re gonna have to be frank with him

he tries his best but gets frustrated easily and get’s even more frustrated and jealous when others are able to help you better with something than he can

just have patience with him and praise him once in a while ya know

the roofs. he loves watching sky at any given time actually, he especially loves stargazing. when he was a kid, he had a telescope and about a hundred books about space, so til this day he's very invested. and another funny thing about him is that he still has that 'dude who was born rich' mentality, despite the fact that he lived on the streets for literally a decade. he wants everything to look like he hasn't tried (and he doesn't want to try) and he wants it to be literally perfect at the same time. so he goes for an obvious solution, being bringing you to watch stars together. it might be difficult to do in a such large city, but he knows places, and he knows a lot of them. he wants to show you the night city in all it's glory as well. he's a bit sentimental, so he shares a lot of stories of a particular places in which he lived - nothing in detail, just to entertain you. despite all his aloof demeanor, he's really proud of himself that he succeeded in impressing you. and if you're truly interested in astronomy as much as he is, then it's over for you, his nerdy ass won't shut up. it has it's pros: it's simply unfair how adorable he looks while telling you everything he knows about stars.

it's his bar for this very special occasion. he's very nervious and the fact that he already left his room is some heroic (pun unintended) shit for him. he needs somewhat comforting surroundings to collect himself better. i believe he's also a romantic at heart, so with help of the lov he'll decorate his place, so it'll be something really nice, not some messy area they usually live in. there will be music (in general he hates music, but he'll tolerate it just this once, because a, it's toga who plays guitar, b, it's for a mission (date)), there will be candles (he went through some real shit trying to steal scented ones and they smell bad anyway for his taste, and even yours), there will be an attempt at decent dinner (please don't eat it, your stomach will probably die). and however awkward it might look, with lov lurking in the background cheering you voth on, those awfully scented candles, somewhat nice music and tomura standing right in the middle of the chaos of this all, it still feels...genuinely nice? such a warm, fuzzy feeling, that you are so welcomed here. he really went out of his way to do this all for you.

congrats on pulling the hottest bitch in town, now good luck actually catching him for a date. the thing is, he's a second for a reason, he's booked and busy, going on missions saving people and so. the most foolproof plan here is to bring him on a date in his own apartment. it's difficult even like that, bc frankly, he's rarely there. he never had any desire to return here, tbh. it doesn't even look like someone lives in here, more like a hotel room, which is also pretty empty and dark. there's little to no furniture, some bed to sleep on, a couch, a table and a TV. very sad. so it's on you to make it cozier and it doesn't have to be much, not at all. he doesn't like fancy things in general, he just doesn't care. whatever you want to make with his place is fine by him. and he's not romantic at all actually, but he appreciates the effort you make to simply spend some time with him. it's a big deal for him, that someone is willing to spend their time not only to tidy up his place and all, but to actually do it for a date which is the direct invitation to spend more time with him. which means, someone really, really wants to spend this exact time with him. wild, don't you think? and this scene where you lit up all the candles you've brought and then sit right next to him, pulling a blanket over you both and asking which movie he chose in the end - that makes it for him.

Injured you too on occasion but he always says that it's because his powers are hard to get a hang off

Starts to get more demanding of you time and blows up when you can't hang out with him

His grip can sometimes get too tight, resulting in bruises and injuries

He's very apologetic and even panicking about them, insisting on you staying here so he can make you feel better instead of going with others

Starts sneaking into your room at night

He knows he isn't supposed to be there but he just wants to make sure you're doing ok

You squirming away from him makes no difference, he's much stronger then you are, besides he won't do anything bad, he just wants to cuddle with his crush

Admitting that he's in love with you is a little embarrassing but maybe now you'll start to see why he's doing the things he's doing and you can return his feelings now that you know of them

Smothers you in kisses, lots of them

Shy about kissing you on the lips but might as well, you'll be dating from this point on anyways so there's no point in him holding back o his affections anymore right?

Idk what to tell to the people who still don't get that although is okay to teach kids the rules to live in a society (like respect others or don't kill or whatever), Kotaro Shimura, Enji Todoroki and Toga's parents didn't care as much for society rules as they care for the rules that made them feel okay at home.

Which in the end caused the main villain trio to reject authority and society and turn into violence, since they did try to use words as kids and were royally ignored.

Tenko, Touya and Toga tried very hard to be good kids, but in their parents conception it was not enough 'cause they couldn't repress some of their needs: they wanted their dads and moms to accept them as they were, to accept who they wanted to be, to accept the way they expressed love and accept the way they interacted with their surroundings.

In Tenko's case, Kotaro was unable to accept his kid desire to become a hero. His could be the worst case in bnha, given the violence of his tragedy and how misfortune (maybe even something else) played on it ending so badly. Tomura himself said that house rejected his very identity, even tho Hana tried to support him in secret and Nao stood up for him, little too late. For what we saw of him as a child, his only defect as a son was wanting to be a pro-hero, dream that got him beaten up for, grounded in a rather cruelly manner. Kotaro's trauma turned him into an irrational man, his hatred for heroes was both the build up and the catalysis of the tragedy that ended the lives of the people he loved the most.

Tenko didn't become a villain because he was an evil kid. He became a villain because AFO wanting it so and because Kotaro inculcated in him such extreme hatred.

In Touya's case, it's a bit more complicated. I don't believe Enji's obsession was completely evil in nature, although his actions were truly selfish and it became later abusive, when his desperation blinded him to the point he was unable to understand how bad he has turned out to be. Like in Tenko's case, the mother is at fault only in yhe sense that their lack of intervention allowed the situation to escalate 'til they couldn't prevent it anymore. Touya's case differentiates itself in the fact that he was older than Tenko, his behavior declining over the years into extreme violence, unlike the way Tenko exploded in murder glee when Kotaro hit him one last time.

The lack of proper attention from both Enji and Rei allowed Touya's behavior to become a tragedy. Their negligence, Enji's focus on his work and Shouto (as a project not a son) and Rei's role of a caretaker yet not a mother, combined with the incapacity of Natsuo and Fuyumi to understand what Touya was going through (really, only Shouto could, but at that point Touya hated him too much and Shouto was way too young)... Well, it didn't end well for a kid that didn't want help anymore but attention on his own terms. He was tired of adapting, the same way Tenko rebelled in his insistence of acting the hero way.

The same house rule ( YOU CANNOT BE A HERO ) sent them both to AFO's hands, one way or another. They were kids who couldn't act the way their dads wanted, so fuck them I guess.

That part is compatible to Toga's case. Kinda.

Toga's parents are by far the most twisted of the bunch, which is a lot to say considering that Kotaro hit his kids and Enji even hit his wife. Yet, without having to touch a single hair of their little girl, they inflicted damage so deep she preferred to become a runaway criminal than to stay at home one more day.

At least Kotaro and Enji valued at some level Tenko and Touya's existence. Toga's parents didn't care about her at all. She was as good as a broken doll, an imperfect piece of their furniture, something they wish wasn't related to them at all. Enji was at least worry about his son and he loved him at some degree, the same way Kotaro worry over Tenko was born out of his fear of losing his family. Nothing of it excuses what they do and let it be said that Enji and Kotaro did saw Touya and Tenko as monsters at some point (when Touya tried to kill Shouto and on his Dabi era, when Tenko killed his family and turned to Kotaro). Yet it doesn't compare to the way Toga's parents immediately erased her from their lives, even denying any affiliation. They sent her to that therapy like a car needing to be repaired. She was a sign of status, she was an object that they failed to produce, she was an aberration and a freak, she deserved to be put down.

From the three od them, Toga was the one who struggled the most to fit in socially, not to society standards tho. To her parents.

If all these parents had cared for their kids more than they cared for his own stupid rules maybe things would have been different. But that's the core of their problems, they don't need the whole world to accept them, they need to treat the internalized traumas their parents left them with, the self-hatred and the feeling of inadequacy and the need for acceptance (of themselves) and recognition.

That's why Toga, Izuku and Shouto are the key for their recovery. Acting as mirrors, they are meant to provide the closure the villain trio desperately need. It's not just a sibling or a nemesis bond, but a recognition of the self through the other situation.

If they can accept themselves and correct their ways and get free from their parents absurd rules, if they can move past the child need for their parents validation, maybe they can finally exist in a less painful way.

How Katsuki's Character Is Misunderstood.

I think people that hate Katsuki just don't really understand his character or how he breaks the cliches of most rivals in shonen.

Accidental rant :D

No Tragic Backstory.

Vegeta had his home destroyed,Sasuke's clan was murdered,Shadow lost everything,etc. They have "reasons" to be an asshole,people excuse they're actions because people say "You can't blame 'em,"

Which is kinda an awful way to look at people's actions and why they do it. A character always needs a motive,and killing half their family,giving them abusive parents,makes it easier to write them. (kinda like a cheat code)But,with Katsuki,he doesn't have a "good" reason to do all the bad things he did.Katsuki stands out because he has what we would call a good life. He has good grades,he has both of his parents,who love him,he has an awesome power,he has so many things going for him,so,in most people's minds he doesn't have any issues and he's just a spoiled brat who doesn't get what he wants. And I think that's what trips people up the most,because he doesn't have a objectively good reason to do anything,but,here's why it's GOOD he doesn't follow that formula. Katsuki is just a kid who was an asshole,that's really it,in reality it's so simple,but some how Horikoshi took one of the most simple things and made it so complicated and gave it so many layers.

Katsuki just felt like he wasn't enough even though people told him he was,he knew he had what people would call a "perfect life," that he was "perfect," and that's what messed him up so bad. He felt deep down,despite what other people were saying,he was inadequate; because one person who he shouldn't think is better than him makes him feel weak. It doesn't make sense. If you were pampered and told you were essentially perfect,then one slip up happens and someone who you have been told is beneath you,that should be beneath you,is the one who helps,it would confuse you too. (Also,remember,Katsuki is a CHILD when this all happens,and he had no one to talk to about it,so of course those feelings would build up over time). It also doesn't help Izuku always wanted to be near him,and when you look at it from Katsuki 's perspective,that person is only there to see you fuck up,that person (Izuku) is WAITING and WATCHING your every move. Waiting until you fuck up just to leave you and or mock you. You would feel like shit too if that's what you thought for ten years.

Katsuki is not some "brat throwing a tantrum because he doesn't get his way," He's confused and coming to terms with a lot of things. His arc is about acceptance. He learned to accept he isn't the best or strongest,he learned to accept he needed help,he learned to accept himself,he learned to accept Izuku.

The person Katsuki has been losing to his whole life,is the person he thought he should be. He had to let himself lose to win. GOD,THAT IS SO DEEP.

(*I also hate the whole thing of, "Well, Katsuki had no reason to be the way he was," then those same people will turn around and get mad that Toga is having a redemption arc because "nothing justifies killing" first, no one is saying it does,second,you were just saying you need a bad past to be forgiven for your bad actions,which is awful. KaTsUkI DiDn'T fAcE aNy CoNsEqUeNcEs

My honest reaction:

Katsuki faced defeat his VERY first day at his dream school. It wasn't just that he lost,he had his HERO his IDOL the person he looked up to,insult and scold him while he sang the praises of Izuku right in front of him. I hate that argument so fucking much. Like,did you seriously read this blindfolded? It happens in the first VOLUME. And it just gets worse.

He gets kidnapped and then has to deal with all of that shit on his own. I also can't image being called a villain when you're trying your best to be a hero,and you got kidnapped because of your personality. Katsuki faced,in my opinion,the most brutal and most instant humbling ever. And real quick,I made a post about All Might and why I don't think he's going to die,and I brought up he sucked at teaching,and in my opinion,he was an asshole too. When he sees on of his students having a panic attack the first thing he says is:

"U.A. Will humble ya :D"

That is beyond problematic.

(Not All Might bashing! I think he's a great character,but I think he was an ass at the beginning of the series,that has a lot to do with his hero persona and his inexperience with children,and just socializing as a whole. And that's why I like him,because we see him grow to be less like his persona and more like his true,sweet,authentic self.)

Inconsistent Writing.

A lot of people get Inconsistent writing and...y'know...more than one tone and personality trait mixed up.

I've see people say, "I don't like how he's written because it's inconsistent,'' and I think that is bullshit. Mainly because out of all the characters Katsuki is objectively the most consistent one.

I saw this person say they didn't like how Katsuki's anger is treated as a joke then the most serious thing in the room,and I say that's valid,but I think the thing they don't understand is tone and context. In the context when it's a joke,Katsuki isn't necessarily even "mad". I think when it's used as a more comedic device,it's not his anger,it's his inability to express himself without yelling. And I think it's funny and interesting to see how Katsuki struggles to articulate himself when he's not "mad" or "yelling." He also lives in a household where communication is done by yelling.

The atmosphere and tone really matter too. When Katsuki has his more "funny mad" moments it's with a group of people all smily and happy. No one is actually "mad." Including Katsuki.

DAMN. I didn't mean to go on a rant like that. Uh,anyway;Katsuki is my favorite character,if you couldn't tell.

I think this Toga battle is everything and I love her gay ass. That being said I think her expression of love being forbidden because of society makes for a realllly bad LGBT allegory just because her expression of love is harmful in every possible way. It’s rightfully wrong, though still tragic in the sense that she was born that way. She’s still really cool and interesting though, and we can enjoy her from afar because she’s fictional

Shit, so I want to disagree but it'll require an essay I'm already planning to write. So I'll throw out some points.

Toga's love is wrong in two aspects - one, I firmly believe Toga's love is an issue with self-hatred and her thinking she has to live as someone else to be loved. So it's a love born of denying and being denied self-love.

The other aspect is consent. Jokes aside, I've said for years Toga's story reads like a queer allegory to me because a really good "solution" to her issues could have been repressing for three more years and then, as an adult, entering consensual kink- relationships surrounding blood drinking. I know there's a sanguinarian community in Japan, and Toga would have an easy time, as a conventionally attractive girl, finding partners. But otherwise, Toga's so used to rejection for her wants that she has not even gone about asking, expecting the answer will be no.

To that point, that's an incredibly queer feeling. There's an immense amount of fear being queer and attracted to people of the same sex/gender because of the violence following some deviations. I don't have links on hand but I know there's studies done about how often women fear expressing homosexual attraction towards other women due to not wanting to come off as predators. Toga's quirks becomes an allegory for "repressing an interest you know will be rejected as deviant no matter what".

It's not just "queerness" in the wlw/sexual orientation way. Again, this is a Japanese story for Japanese story. Toga's way of expressing herself is way too forward in a society where they just say "like" to get out of saying "love" and even that is too forward because it involves directly addressing a person in a language where people avoid "you" language if they can.

It's not just the way she wants, it's the way she wants at all. Toga is a nail that sticks out in so many ways and cannot bend to society. The best (realistic) solution would have likely been waiting a few years and finding her own community but this then verges on the inability of queer youth to imagine futures for themselves (see the concept of queer temporality). If you don't see a future where you are allow the possibility of happiness, can you imagine one? Can you swallow the misery and wait it out? Many people cannot. Like I said, this is a very layered, complex topic. It deserves a serious essay from me. I'll try to write it.
