trop novels and show ending comparison
tbh i wouldn’t even call it differences because by the end of the show it’s completely different from the book, it’s not even the same story. the book ending is split up in 3 chapters and that’s not including the extras chapters about their lives after finally getting together. half of the last book is just the ending, it’s massive. i can’t really explain the book ending because it has no similarities with the show and that’ll be confusing.
just to be clear nothing in the show finale happened in the books.
so in the show finale it starts with Zhiwei and Ning Yi negotiating about the Fire Phoenix Gang. in the books she never had a brother, Dacheng doesnt have a prince and there is no Fire Phoenix Gang. then she confronts him about killing Helian Zheng. in the novels Helian Zheng’s death had nothing to do with Ning Yi, it was designed byQing Fei and Xin Ziyan but he was unaware. in the show Helian Zheng’s death was the last straw between her and Ning Yi but in the novels there’s been so many last straws in the end they realised there never was a last draw, in other words they realised every single betrayal and misunderstanding were each their last straws. they were destined to torment eachother so long as they live.
in the book (nevermind the details) she revived a Dacheng kingdom and became the emperor herself then attempted a coup to overthrow Ning Yi and the Tiansheng kingdom but lost. on purpose tbh she knew she didn’t stand a chance. during all this Ning Yi threw her in jail then Gu Nanyi got her out but before that she ate poison to ensure she will die. because after the coup fails there’s no reason for Ning Yi to let her live or else he would not be the good monarch he needs to be. in both the show and the novel she sacrifices herself for the “greater cause” in the show it’s to ensure Dacheng remnants will no longer have any reason to revive Dacheng and spill more blood and in the novels she sacrificed herself for Ning Yi and to “redeem all their sins”.
instead of jumping off a cliff she dies soundlessly in Gu Nanyi’s arms on the palace wall while everyone was fighting. both Gu Nanyi and Ning Yi dies internally. Ning Yi vomits blood and faints, Gu Nanyi takes her and jumps off the palace wall.
oR sO we thOUght. the thing is she actually wanted to die but Zong Chen saves her and she lives in recluse for a couple of years until Gu Nanyi used all his brain cells at once one day after he couldn’t find her anywhere and made a great plan. he “assassinates” Ning Yi then after Ning Yi “dies” because he knows Feng Zhiwei will show up. because like she once said the only way for them to redeem their sins and be together is through death. meaning they can’t be together as long as they are who they are so she can’t be the Dacheng princess and he can’t be the Tiansheng prince and they can’t be life long enemies. the only way to remedy that is for them to die. or “die”. so after she hears the news that Ning Yi dies obviously she’ll show up to check if it’s true.
in the very very end in the extras chapters they live happily ever after and have kids while my angel Nanyi deserved better.
personally i’m not a fan of the extras chapters because it’s like all the shit they did all the blood they shed was for nothing and my bAby Nanyi suffered for nothing. having a happy ending like that just... defeats the purpose of everything. ya feel? if the book actually ends at the last line of the coda it would’ve felt inconclusive but complete because it’s jsut the two of them holding hands in front of Ning Yi’s fake coffin. but the extras chapters are like... what’s the point of it all. hell, im not saying they don’t deserve to be happy but the happily ever after chapters were so happy and different it felt a little out of place in the whole series.
even though it’s hella sad, i actually like the show’s ending as well. the way she dies is so poetic and Ning Yi’s face when he senses her death reminds me of Vronsky’s look when Anna died in Joe Wright’s Anna Karenina. i also really like how she was playing the tune Ning Yi always plays before she dies. i believe in the necessity of her death as the Dacheng princess just as she does. and they could never truly be together wholeheartedly, not after all the deaths. but what i was expecting was for her to somehow survive the fall and live as an ordinary person for the rest of her life because Feng Zhiwei the Dacheng princess “died”.
Chen Kun said they actually made 2 endings and the other ending with the interdimentional dialogue where they talk to eachother from miles away and pretend they’re both on the cliff didn’t make the cut. such a waste of money and effort smh.
i’m not mad at the fact she dies in the show i’m mad about the editing it feels so rushed. one minute she tells Nanyi she’s going to marry Ning Yi then the next scene she’s on a cliff i mean it’s not terrible but i bet they had so much more material to show.
does any of this even make sense it feels like i just vomited a lot of words i’m so bad at this
