[2:05pm]
Sakusa Kiyoomi is a methodical man.
He promptly wakes up at 6am everyday. He goes to brush his teeth, gargles mouthwash a few times, and then neatly places his toothbrush and toothpaste back in their designated places. A small, healthy breakfast is enjoyed in utter silence as he knows such quiet will be a rare occurrence in the rest of his day.* At 7:30am, he leaves for practice.
Fridays are days to be spent hiding from the MSBY team and drinking tea while doing sudoku on the sofa. The athletes are given a half day on Saturdays, so he spends the latter half often catching up on errands like grocery shopping. Sundays were strictly reserved for "deep cleaning" the apartment despite its state of spotlessness during the entire week.
He is meticulous in all of his actions. If he must cook, he ensures that he follows every instruction precisely. After all, wasn't intention behind a recipe book? If the team went to an away game, he needed to know the exact itinerary and planned what items he would require for that particular trip.
And, of course, he was most meticulous about his hygiene. He was a professional athlete after all - being healthy and avoiding illnesses should be his top priority. However, this was not only just about wearing a mask or avoiding unsanitary places. No, it encompassed and extended to his system of steps for both his skincare and haircare - all of which he did so that he appeared neat and clean at all times. When Sakusa looked in the mirror, he was content to see a man of discipline and efficiency in the reflection.
The only time there has been a deviation was when he began dating you.
Suddenly, mornings seemed to have a slower start as it became harder and harder to untangle himself from the warmth of your body and the feel of your skin under his fingertips. After he managed to remove himself with great effort, he shivered. Had his apartment always been so chilly? In the bathroom, his toothbrush was still in its rightful place, but tilted at an awkward angle to make room for another one, and the white cap for the toothpaste was only half screwed on. After he's done, he makes his way towards the sounds of the coffee maker in the kitchen. It is quiet as he begins to eat, but it's broken by a yelp and the sound of frantic movement as you shove a bagel in your mouth and attempt to pull your arms through the sleeves of your coat as you bullied your feet into your shoes. He winces when you step on the backs as if they're slippers, leaving permanent crease marks, but is surprised when you are sliding your feet right out of them again. White socks make dull thuds on the floor as they hurry towards his seat and he feels a set of soft lips against his own. There's a wave, another yelp (maybe more so of a screech this time) as you check your watch again, and he shakes his head as he watches you dash out the door. He told you if you stayed in bed, you'd be late again.
The weekends had changed as well. Friday nights were often spent at new restaurants, ones he would have never dared nor had an interest to try. But you with your damn eyes had him from wrinkling his nose to aggressively making reservations. Some of these dinners were even accompanied by other members of his teams.** On Saturdays, he uses a cart instead of a basket at the grocery store, and watches as random items are often haphazardly thrown into it.*** Upon finishing all the errands, he is often coerced into doing some activity after he is told that he is "being no fun".
And while deep cleaning is still not necessary, there does have to be some active cleaning on Sundays. The words "gentle reminder" likes to come up on those days in a tone that you like to point out is NOT gentle.
His hygiene was still of utmost importance, but he does admit that his throat maybe felt a little scratchy during practice once, and it was definitely not because he couldn't resist giving you a kiss when you looked so miserably sick as you watched him leave. Moreover, his skincare and haircare routine continued the same, if anything he inspired you to start one, but when he looked in the mirror, Sakusa didn't recognise the man with a slight glimmer to his eyes and, dare he say, soft expression on his face staring back.
But he forgot that he was accustomed to these things for a part of his life.
Wasn't he always a methodical man? He didn't think he was a person that could alter his schedule and habits for anybody so it was hard to imagine a situation in which he did. There were no traces of such a lifestyle left in his apartment, no souvenirs of your interference in his life. He currently only orders from the few restaurants that he has always order from and will continue to order from and his finished sudoku books are all neatly placed underneath his coffee table. Surely his life has always been organised and simple.
So where did all these memories, bursting with vivid colour and rich emotion, come from as they hit him like a truck and ran him over when you stood in front of him with shaking hands and determined eyes, right before he was going to walk down an aisle with someone else?
Honestly, you thought this would be more like the movies where time would stand still after the dramatic entrance, the background fading as the main couple stands in front of each other and somehow managing to have a conversation with just their eyes. You were, instead, all too aware of the sound of scuffling shoes and excited chatter as people finished taking their seats outside of the room. With every breath, you inhaled the scent of the gardenias that littered the venue and you saw, through the corner of your eye, a clock that hung on the wall - each tick seeming mocking as you literally watched time slip away from you.
There wasn't a wordless conversation. You didn't know what he was thinking at all. Something akin to a panic attack threatened to rise in you as you stared at him. You were here, years later, and still failed to understand what the hell was going on in Sakusa Kyoomi's head.
The reality was that there was nothing going on in Sakusa Kiyoomi's head apart from pure, empty shock.
"Are you really going through with this?" Your words came out clipped as if you were more annoyed than scared. He flinched, not at your tone, but at the fact that he had almost forgotten what the sound of your voice was like.
"The music is going to begin at any moment now," he managed to force out through stiff lips.
"That doesn't answer my question."
"I don't have a choice."
"Oh don't give me that shit Omi." How had he forgotten what your voice sounded like.
"You shouldn't be getting married just because you were told to and with someone who is practically a stranger nonetheless. What about your autonomy? Your happiness? Her happiness? This is for life Omi! Are you actually insane??" You waved your hands in exasperation.
"it's been years," he simply stated.
What he meant to say was - where were you all these years?
"Look, this doesn't even concern us," you sighed and ran your fingers through your hair. "You can't keep going through life saying that you have a duty to do certain things, that certain things just have to be done and in this or that particular way. You have a choice to just not do things Omi. Stop acting like there are some set of bylaws that dictate that you must live your life according to its principles or something. If living a more disciplined lifestyle makes you happy, that's great. in fact, I found it admirable. But is this something that you are truly okay with doing?" You gestured to the air above you as you finished.
He rubbed his eyes and sucked in a small breath. "I don't know anymore. I just-," he struggled to find the words. "I don't know when I ended up being stuck on a loop. I assumed that because I don't care too much about whether or not I get married anyway, I should listen to my parents and make them happy at the very least."
You hesitated briefly in puzzlement before saying with a slightly curious tone, "I thought you liked the concept of getting married? Something about being a traditional family man with the house and the whole doting wife, kids, and dog package."
He wrinkled his nose in a manner all too familiar to you. "I said nothing about a dog."
You sighed. "That's not important here."
"It is though," he said with a soft smile and a slight wistfulness graced his features. "You were the one that wanted a dog."
That was the problem. It wasn't the concept of getting married Sakusa liked. It was the idea of getting married to YOU. The memories he suppressed were a side effect from having to force your existence completely out of his mind during this whole ordeal - he wouldn't have the ability to go through with it otherwise. If he hadn't done it, he would've begun to imagine what you would have looked like in a wedding dress, waiting for him at the end of a path scattered in flowers with the smile that he adored so much. The wedding would have been smaller than this one and you probably would have begged him to have it outside and, despite his repulsion for insects, he probably would have agreed. Because it was you that asked. You'd definitely be cliche and smear cake on his face and he'd "let" you because he knew he'd find the photos of it afterward endearing. And even though he hated dancing, he would have done it all night if that meant he could hear your happy laughter echo in his ear and watch the silver of your wedding ring flash as you placed your hand in his. Anything you asked of him for the wedding, he knew he would have done.
Because he loved you.
Because he loves you.
Everyone will say that Sakusa Kiyoomi is a methodical man, except, when it comes to you.
So he was not surprised, no, he realised he had accepted his fate a long time ago, when he grasped your hand in his and tugged you out of the room so that the two of you could slip out the back of the church. The sudden sunlight that flooded towards you as the door opened had the both of you squinting to adjust to the brightness outside. Sakusa's heart was hammering in his chest. With the feeling of an unfamiliar rush of adrenaline and a strange sensation, as if he were deviating from a script in a movie, he looked up at the clear blue sky and the faint V-line of geese migrating for the winter. He felt light-headed, from giddiness or anxiety he wasn't sure, but he was glad you were holding his hand because he was sure it would be trembling otherwise.
You heard a chuckle and looked at him quizzically as you made your way across the asphalt road. He looked down at you with a slight curve to his lips.
"I missed you."
You bit your lip, afraid to let yourself be too happy yet, just in case this all turned out to be a dream or something like that. But he gave your hand a squeeze and it felt real, and the way his slender fingers tilted your head up towards him felt real, and the way his lips pressed against yours again and again felt real.
Sakusa pulled back from you with a different look in his eyes, as if he too had to confirm to himself that this wasn't a dream. He whispered in a hoarse voice, as if he hadn't spoken in a very long time,
"Thank you."
Fin.

NPMD Tarot - The Lovers
Others from the project: The Devil, The Hierophant , The Star
A bit of symbolism under the cut, but I'm curious of other interpretations!!
Card that's all about forming own opinions and being authentic to self? Where the Reversed meaning is about hard choices and dealing with consequences? Even if they weren't the main couple of the musical it would've fitted them well!
There are twists in this one - major one is replacing the angel that blesses the couple with Max - still alive, threatening in all of his bully glory.
I kept the "everyone looks at someone who's looking at someone else" circle - Max is threatening Peter, Peter is in love with Steph and Steph is prepared to go after Max for what he did to Peter.
They have more nervous/covered up body language than the original card, since they aren't communicating that clearly. Steph is more open, even if nervous, Peter is on the fence, but willing.
Gun between them, pointing at Peter? You'll never guess what's that referencing :P

Rollo Flamm x Reader || Rhythm
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Warnings: Understated jealousy (?), Reader can’t dance (wants to, though), provisioning of unrequired love, female reader.
Tumblr media
The girl that dances atop the stage is really pretty.
It’s not you, and with some kind of regret, you concede you’ve never properly learned to dance.
The girl is more beautiful than the starry night above the City of Flowers because she feels like a dream. Stars will be tomorrow too, but her? No one knows, so all eyes are on her, to balm each’s heart with her sight.
Her steps are graceful and the way she moves is enchanting. It’s not an easy choreography either - with so many jumps and twirls and turns - but she makes it seem so because a smile never leaves her face. The fabric of her dress follows her faithfully, and you imagine she will look incredible in every photo taken of her.
“She’s so… beautiful,” someone next to you breathes with awe.
You believe Rollo thinks so too.
Even if the thought of never being looked on like that stings, you can only blame yourself as he didn’t want to come here at all. When you suggested checking out the show that is being held in a Topsy-Turvy Event Hall, Rollo scolded you for distracting yourself. It might be a Friday evening when most of the students are already headed to the dormitory, but the work of student council members is never done. Before the weekend, at least.
Your whingeing has been guerdoned: Rollo agreed on taking a break. He was hesitant while doing so, and almost annoyed at the cheery smiles that appeared instantly on three faces, yours, the vice president’s and a school treasurer’s. The papers and cups of cold tea were left instantly, and in the next few minutes, all four of you were heading down the staircase.
A square is crowded every season with tourists, so neither you nor Rollo is surprised that the two other students got separated from you before even reaching the main stage. You are thankful for their attentiveness because it allows you to be alone with Rollo.
“They are selling enchanted drinks again!” You exclaim, pointing to a stall with indigo macrame hung around a tent. Some attractions were opened at certain seasons a year, and you remember the elixirs being a hit last year.
“It looks like so,” Rollo states flatly. “I wonder why people are so fixated on this kind of never-lasting things.”
Knowing Rollo is a man of harsh words, you brush off his comment.
Blue potion with edible glitter — you are sure it’s edible glitter because most of the useful mixtures are rather lustreless — catches your eye. It looks like a piece of starry sky tucked into a glass bottle. It’s also supposed to help you with your studies if you drink it, so it’s even more magical.
“Would you like to try one? This one helps you focus… But, yeah, I guess you already can do that perfectly,” you pick up the next vial. “Oh, after drinking the yellow one, you should be able to sing more professionally! And the green one is for rhythm… I would need that one. Yet, the most interesting one here is-”
- a love potion.
Even the vial is heart-shaped. The mixture inside is either pink or purple, you can’t really define it because of the amount of bubbles that constantly stir the mixture. You might not be the best alchemy student ever, but even you know that that potion has some enchanting aroma that might bind your senses.
Maybe that potion is your only chance ever to get with Rollo. Your heart is heavy at the thought of enchanting him to love you.
“I have no intention of buying anything,” Rollo’s curt voice slings you from your thoughts. He takes vials from your hands and puts them back, any moment ready to push them out of his mind. “Anything but croissants. I can treat you to one of those.”
…And that’s how you get free food, dear students.
“Will you? Thank you, thank you, thank you!” You would love to hug him, Rollo is… Rollo probably wouldn’t appreciate this kind of gratitude in the middle of the street. Or wherever. It’s hard to imagine Rollo being happy about a hug as he seems unused to physical contact, yet that might be a reason why you should try to open him up.
For a last moment you think about the enchanted concoctions, but Rollo turns around and you need to catch up to not get separated from him.
Way to his favourite bakery Rollo knows by heart. He guides you through the crowd and it’s easy to follow him as he stands taller than most people, the distance being even larger when you count his hat. He glanced over his shoulder to check if you were still beside him after you get out of the most crowded area.
“We’re here,” Rollo announces as if you hadn’t been accompanying him to the bakery whenever you had a chance. He strides to the counter, where several types of croissants under a glass cover are creating a delicious exhibition. “Choose whatever you like.”
It's a very tempting offer, and you decide to take it once you glue yourself to the glass of a counter.
“I…” You start, pointing at two specific desserts. Two croissants with your favourite fillings are too delicious to pick between them. “Can I get two? I will treat you something in return, once I'll have money on me.”
“You’ll get a stomachache,” he says curtly but slides his card to a lady behind a counter that picks up another baking for himself, halfway dipped in chocolate and topped with cut-dried strawberries. “Be careful. They’ve been just taken out of the oven, so you’d better don’t burn yourself.
“Thanks.”
You let yourself bite into the device, as you take another turn, this time the way leading into the main square. There is a grand scene that is always used for music performances.
There is one being held, a solo.
You glance at the dancer, and they look around the crowd. You think there are your two missing clubmates, and beckon Rollo over.
“Hey, there are—”
Your surprise silences you.
Rollo stays planted on the ground, eyes on the dancing girl with something like awe. You know that look. You caught a glimpse of it many times on the surface of the glass in student consul’s showcases; your face, so desperately stretching in a soft smile, not to look suspicious.
For the first time, you didn't like the idea of love at first sight.
You know where it’s time to step out. Many negotiations you held with people on behalf of students of NBC sensitised you to their expectations and what you should do.
You smile weakly, before gently tapping Rollo on his arm. “I… will get going.”
But Rollo, amazingly, has already shaken off from mysterious enchantment. If you could only do so as easily, permanently. “Are you sick?” He asks, and when you avoid his eyes, his tone voice drops half a tone. “What happened?”
“Nothing, it’s… Can… I… just go?”
“What happened?” Rollo repeats. His eyes scan you, the first time quickly, and when he doesn’t find anything visible, he gets more alarmed, actually looking stiff. “Did you actually burn yourself? I told you to be careful.”
You don’t know what to tell him but start with a measurement that doesn’t bring him any relief.
“It’s not that, Rollo. I…”
“Do tell.” He insists, although if you said a word, you know he wouldn’t question you any more about this. But he would find out in some other way, and he might think you don’t trust him enough - and this implication you really want to avoid - and… “Tell me.”
…And you want to believe that he’s worried for you.
You stare at the ground, and clasp your hands behind your back once you notice their subtle shaking. Why are you reacting this way? Ahh… “I just don’t enjoy dancing. I think I will just return to school and finish organizing the documents…”
“You’ve always liked to see people dance though.”
So he has noticed.
“I don’t have a talent to dance myself.”
“You just need to learn,” he says, his tone softer than you’ve ever heard him. And as you’ve been listening to his voice o lot, you think you might’ve imagined it. Rollo glances at his watch and urges you to come with him. “It’s almost time to ring the bell. Let’s go. I will help you.”
You don’t like climbing the bell tower, and going up hundreds of steps isn’t something easy even with Rollo as your motivation. It’s the anxiety that keeps you going.
“I didn't buy the enchantment, though,” you break the silence, and Rollo looks over his shoulder. He is one step in front of you, and he probably slowed his pace to let you catch up to him easily. He’s a master of climbing stairs and ladders after all. “To dance. The bell won’t do anything if… I don’t have any magic on me, no?”
“Don't depend on these kinds of things,” he grumbles. “If you do, you will never achieve anything. For example, if you drank the potion, of course, you'd know how to dance. But just for tonight.”
You question his motivational quote. “But isn't the magic helpful sometimes?”
“It makes one fully depend on it.”
And the conversation ends here because you’ve reached the top platform. Rollo opens the trapdoor and holds it for you. As you step out, you’re immediately hit with a breeze of cold air, but it’s more kind of refreshing than freezing.
Once the trapdoor is closed, Rollo awaits, frozen for a clock-measured minute and three seconds.
And then he rings the bell. It takes much force to move it, and you are almost sure Rollo doesn’t even boost his strength with magic. But, what’s unexpected, this one time he uses magic to repeat the movements of the bell and have it ring on its own.
DING- DONG.
DING- DONG.
DING- DONG.
He leaves it to ring at the same tempo and turns to you. The magical earplugs in your ears only moderately muffle the sound of the bell. No music from the Topsy-Turvy Event Hall reaches you anymore. You can only hear the rings clearly, and wouldn't hear Rollo if he said anything.
He doesn't even try to, and without even a shred of a smile, he takes your hand in his.
DING- DONG.
His right hand wraps around your waist, and the fingers of the left one intertwine with yours. He stands taller than you, mighty, righteous. His gaze lingers on you as if he judges you.
It’s never a fair judgement, because the slightly offbeat of his heart drives his reason senseless.
He takes the first step to the back, and you follow along.
DING- DONG.
Rollo's movements are fluid and graceful, yet precise and purposeful. He leads you with ease, his body guiding yours. Waltz is a dance that emphasises the partnership, but with you not knowing the steps, it feels to you like some sort of majestic tango.
You’re overpowered within the first seconds of dance.
DING- DONG.
DING- DONG.
Step, step, DING, turn, step, turn, DONG.
You know your cheeks are flushed, and you blame the height and cold wind for it. Maybe it is a tiring dance, and you believe it’s acceptable to be this tired yet happy if you are dancing for all of eternity. It feels like the bell started to strike the omnipresent tempo a lifetime ago.
Rollo knows when your waltz-tango should end. He stops the chime with a fluid movement of his hand, magic stopping the well-kept rhythm from a bell.
BA-DUM, BA-DUM.
Your heart maintains the tempo. Even if each beat is strong and loud, you worry about how it will come to a halt at any second.
“I’m surprised,” he starts, sounding unsurprised but kind…-ish, “that you aren’t in a dance-related club yet.”
You cock your head to the side. “Is this a… sarcasm?”
“No. I think that musical-related things would suit you better. You could dance on that grand stage we approached earlier.”
“Like that girl?”
Rollo frowns. “What girl?”
…He doesn’t remember? How could anyone forget for a second about a person one has fallen for? You couldn’t. You can’t. You’re dumbfounded.
“A dancer. On a stage. Today.” Rollo looks more confused with each suggestion. “She was dancing to a… fast music in a flowy dress?”
“Ah,” finally, recognition sparkles in his eyes. A wave of relief is followed by anxiety, but Rollo shrugs your both overwhelms off, with a flick of his hand. “Yes, like her or… even better. The piece she danced to would fit you if you only embrace your passion. I think your performance would be more dreamy.”
You chuckle.
“If I would do that, what would you do without me in the student council club?” By this slight teasing, Rollo stiffens a little. You place your hand on your chest. “But as your right hand, you can’t get rid of me so easily.”
You swear you see him smiling subtly, and it’s no trick of light.
“As my right hand, you have the power to do whatever you want.”
“Then I want to stay.”
“Hm,” Rollo ponders. As you notice his gaze, you feel as if he’s contemplating which future holds the best fate for you. He lowers his eyelids, sighing slightly. “Is that so?”
“Yes,” you smile. “But if I hold any power like you say, I would like to use it to have you dance with me again.”
“Strange request,” he says curtly but doesn’t deny your request. His follow-up question makes your chest fill with warmth. “Do you know any dances? Except for waltz,” he says as if you could call your ‘waltz’ anything other than pretending to know how to dance.
“Macarena?” You suggest and he looks at you sceptically. In response, you flash him a bashful smile. “No?”
He sighs but takes your hands in his.
“Let me teach you, then,” he says, slowly. “Let’s start with a proper greeting,” but his greeting isn’t proper, because he doesn’t look at you. Because he avoids your gaze, you can have a shameless view on his red face, that must match the temperature with his quickly warming up hands. You always thought Rollo’s hands were cold, until this moment. “An elegant bow…”
He bows and you lift the brim of your skirt in response, trying to copy the fluidity of the curtsy.
He brings your hand up so carefully as if it is made from the thinnest glass, and presses his lips to your knuckles. So cliche, so old-fashioned, but chivalry isn’t dead as it fills you with energy, surprise and some embarrassment that makes you want to live this moment forever. “And a kiss.”
“Now I’m charmed,” You laugh softly, a smile on your face, yet you were mentally prepared to faint. You wonder if doctors would detect you lovesick if your heart actually stopped. “What’s after that?”
Rollo glances up at you, his eyes brighter than ever. He brings you closer to him.
“Let’s talk about rhythm.”

Why you need to put the knife down
Or I know I'm late but wouldn't it be so fucking funny
Like, come on. How many times can you reasonably kill a guy until the very process becomes a form of immortality. I don't think the man deserves to be jesus-on-the-cross bleeding out divinity.
I understand your Roman Empire is the Roman Empire and coincidentally your girl dinner is also the Roman Empire. However. Please think about it. What would infuriate him more than obscurity.
If we pretend the ides of March is just another tuesdaymondaywednesday we get so much of around here that would count as the ultimate betrayal. Knife through the matter of him if you so will. Brutal in a Brutus sort of way.
Go forth and sow as much chaos as you see fit. Special shoutout to like half the Senate that decided to simply not show up. Outside of being a perfect microcosm of human interaction in my eyes they're also achieved timeless comedy gold.

It's really disheartening that Rick Riordan stance on the war I understand that he wants to be neutral on this stance but in my opinion by becoming neutral he only worsening the issue as many Palestines are dying that are mostly children, how the majority of Israeli are supporting the Genocide of Palestine, and how the government is trying so hard (but miserably failing) to justified the genocide. I will hold him accountable for what he said on this issue as during this period the choice is basically "you are with us or against us."
Part of me wishes he will realize what he said was wrong and understand the bigger issue that plays at hand. I will criticism for his actions as how can a man who promotes LGBTQIA and representation of minorities and disabilities in his books turn a blind eyes to Genocide of people. However we can only wait and see on his next move.
One last thing about your previous you said you don't group Riordan with other authors where do you would group him with? Also this is more on an opinion base answer but many people are boycotting companies that support Israel there as been another post on Twitter on boycotting authors. Rick Riordan happens to be one of them. Do you believed that he should be boycotted with other authors or he should be properly educated and apologized for his previous statement? If you believed he should be boycotted what do tou have to say to those who might have the mentality of "separate the art from the artist"
thank you for this ask, and i completely agree with you! it is extremely hypocritical of him considering what he preaches for in his books. i think he’s convinced he has properly addressed the apartheid by using very vague language that can be applied to anything, and in doing so, he’s addressed nothing really.
your first question on who i would group him with— probably other authors who are doing the exact same as him in their virtue signalling. i always like to link my other blogs to each other, so i don’t think it’s a secret that i have a red queen account and i’m pretty passionate about that. unfortunately, victoria aveyard is another fantasy author who has literally wrote a whole four-book series on the uprising against oppression but is now playing neutral in her address of the apartheid. rebecca yarros is in the same boat, although i haven’t read ‘fourth wing,’ fans have said there are large themes of oppression within the book. so if i had to group riordan it would probably be in the ‘i-like-to-write-about-it-for-profit-and-praise-only’ group.
in terms of boycotting, i think that’s a great idea! i would also like to remind everyone that the percy jackson tv show is coming out in a little over a month, but disney is a huge industry financially supporting israel as well ($2 million in funding), which is obviously far more damning than a poorly written address by one person. there is a boycott happening for disney as well— and the pjo show will be released on disney + . i implore everyone to not watch it on that platform!! personally i will be pirating it online (idk if i’ll get into trouble saying that here but lol oh well), because im pretty sure the boycott is only for withdrawing financial support, not simply consuming media.
i feel like separating art from the artist only works if that artist is… like, dead, and you’re using that art and its values as a historical insight to how the world was during its time. you can still like a piece of work that has a problematic artist, you can engage with the work (to an extent). but separating art from the artist barely works because either:
to engage with the art is to support the artist in some way, so that artist is making money based on your interaction with that (particularly in the case for singers and streaming of songs)
that artists’ views and values are so rancid that it’s literally embedded within the text itself. to ignore it is harmful.
harry potter is my all-time favourite example to use, because jkr is the scum of the earth, and her views are entrenched in her work. a lesser known example is sarah j maas and her books (she’s also not as dogshit as jkr, but then again, its not hard to be a better person than her). i’m not going to bag on these people for liking things by problematic people (would be hypocritical of me), i just think it’s cowardly not to address it when you come across it, or at least admit to it. to simply write things off as ‘separate to the artist’ is like purposefully turning off your critical thinking skills.
on whether boycotting or an apology is enough— if riordan did apologise and used specific language and not the nonsense he had in that blog, expressed his remorse for his ignorance and then actually did or said something to support the people of palestine then, yeah. that’s fine and that’s how we learn ig. but he should educate himself, too many activists, people from the arab community and especially palestinians are expected to be all-knowing and to educate everyone else on an already draining and personal tragedy. it’s been exhausting for me, i can’t imagine what they’re going through. if riordan (or anyone) needs to be educated, he should do it himself, and (at least in my opinion) i don’t think the info is very hard to find now. it’s just about weeding out the misinformation.
i think boycotting is a good idea as of now. it can serve to be a catalyst for self reflection for many people. also, as much as i hate most online discourses, talking about it online needs to happen. i don’t want these authors to forget, for a moment, about the ignorance they posted online during a time of international crisis.

Happy three years everybody! As always, there’s a lot to say on the occasion, so pop in at the end of the post for the tl;dr if you don’t have time for my detailed diatribes, haha
Boy, time flies, huh? Feels like the second anniversary was just yesterday, but maybe that’s just the several long hiatuses getting to me. I’ve been scarce on uploading anything anywhere for a while now, even though I promised I’d actually pick up the slack this time around. What gives? Well…
For one, college hell, and for two, a lot of unfounded anxiety about putting my art out there. Allow me some theatrics for a moment and I’ll actually get back to the comic at hand… I’ve never had an exceptionally supportive environment for making art. It wasn’t suppressive, not in the slightest, but it also wasn’t… encouraging. It was always treated as a hobby or a distraction rather than something I was allowed to be fully proud of, especially because a lot of my art focused on more cartoon-y and fantasy ideas, rather than still life studies and painting (which people generally outside of the art sphere tend to value more, arbitrarily). Couple that with a childhood full of being bullied over minute shit you hadn’t even considered could be an issue before, and you get a teenager hellbent on never sharing his interests or ideas with anyone, mostly due to the fear of rejection.
I’ve grown, thankfully, but that paranoia and fear doesn’t go away overnight. As I’m sure you all know, Meowchela was the one who originally encouraged me to post this comic, and the only reason she succeeded was because she was the first person in a long time who listened and engaged with my interests and my art in a meaningful way. It’s kind of obvious her friendship had a profound impact on me, and I’d cite her as one of the reasons I was even hopeful enough to apply to an art college in the first place! This comic, and that bond with another person, proved that maybe these things I’m so passionate about weren’t duds, and weren’t something I had to keep to myself.
So, fast forward a few years. About three years, in fact.
During one of my classes, right before this hellish two weeks of exams started, one of the class assistants talked me into showing my comic pages to one of my professors. He’s generally a pretty open guy when it comes to new mediums, but I’m always… apprehensive about showing my less “traditional art”-y things to professors, but, he ended up being genuinely proud of it. Specifically, I showed him pages 85-87 (because they’re my favourites) and, he didn’t read the text, just the visuals were enough for him to say “good job, keep it up” (which is HIGH praise from that guy). When I mentioned I’ve been meaning to simplify the visuals because I didn’t have time to work on the comic very often because of college and classes, he dismissed it on principle. I was honestly caught off guard. Heavily paraphrasing, he suggested that worsening the visuals for an arbitrary deadline was counterproductive to making something that’s Good™.
That’s kinda stuck with me. For a good few years now I was more focused on optimisation rather than visual improvement for the comic, and though it HAS contributed to better visuals in some ways (cutting corners sometimes makes for a less pointy and jagged end result), it’s kind of weird I’m treating an art project that way, isn’t it? I set a lot of… arbitrary deadlines and standards for myself, in the form of expectations and what I “should” or “shouldn’t” be doing at certain stages in my life. I’ve thought of Dread Not as a passion project second and a stepping stone first, if I’m being honest. As if it was too… fandom-y and derivative to be treated with more gravity than that, like it’s an immature project because I was still a child when I came up with it. As if it was something I’m making to Build Up to Something Else, something Bigger and Cooler and More Important, and… the more I think about the future of Dread Not, and even my future career options, the more I realised that’s, ironically, a really immature way to think about it.
If there’s one thing going to this art college has taught me, is that there’s no “right” way to make art, and there’s no “right” way to success as an artist. There’s no clear-cut paths, just more commonly treaded roads, but even those are heavily overgrown. Why should I try to box myself into thinking I have to make things from complete scratch to be taken seriously? What’s so bad about Dread Not as a story and as a comic that’s caused me to vaguely keep it under wraps when conversing with people in my day-to-day life? Why wouldn’t I put all these skills I’ve acquired to improve and expand this project that’s Right There, WAITING for me to finally get off my ass and get pages out there again?
I wish I could say I’ve used all this time away in a particularly clever way, but I really haven’t - at least, it feels like I haven’t. My art has undoubtedly improved over time (though admittedly the art for this post was Very rushed, fuckin exams), and while I’ve been working on projects in the background, chipping away at them in a VERY disorganised way, I haven’t been posting that progress anywhere, and I haven’t made any good progress on my biggest project, Dread Not, because of the other ones. And, honestly? Admitting that kinda stings. This comic means a lot to me, and I wish I actually gave it the time and attention it deserves instead of letting it sit out hiatus after hiatus because I keep failing at structuring my time.
So, my new plan is a little more abstract: find a way to work Dread Not into my school schedule, and slowly build a habit of working on it more often. No clue how long that’ll take, but I think it’ll be worth it to consider it as an option, and hopefully finally end these long, drawn out hiatuses with short bursts of uploads in-between. HOPEFULLY. Building habits was never my strong suit, so please bear with me while I figure this out in what will probably be the most hectic upload schedule in this comics history, which is: no schedule at all.
From now on (until the end of Act 1), I’ll upload pages when they’re ready, and depending on how the weeks go and how complex the page is, they could be weeks or days apart from one another. Hell, some might even take a month to finish if school stuff gets REALLY hectic (god knows Hellish Exam Week number 1 and number 2 won’t be giving me much time to work on the comic), but I’m determined to do this. I want to be able to put my all into this project again!!
(And hopefully finish Act 1 by the end of this semester…)
TL;DR: College is giving me life lessons I didn’t expect, and because of them I’ve decided to give myself a non-existent upload schedule for Dread Not: Pages will be posted when they’re ready, and the spacing between pages could wildly vary depending on circumstances and the actual complexity of the page itself.
As always, thank you for being here, thank you for reading, and thank you for being patient!
If all goes well, there will be new content very, very soon.
