Como Estan?

COREY 

Making a left at the stop sign and following the line of traffic I glanced in the rear view mirror to a depressing sight. 

“Fuck.” I groaned. “Goddamn it.” Thinking quick on my feet I reached behind me to tap Izaiah’s leg. “Zay, wake up.” I shook his legs feeling him move around. 

“Stop.” He grumbled. 

“Izaiah get up man I need you.” I panicked. Checking behind me I picked up my phone from the cup holder and unlocked it. 

“What is it?” He yawned. 

Handing him my phone I pulled over on the side of the road, speedily gathering my wallet and my dad’s registration from the glove compartment. “Turn the volume off and send our location to your mom. Do it now.” I said with all seriousness. 

“What’s wrong? Did something happen?” He frantically did as I asked and peered over the baby’s car seat, checking on her. 

“No, I didn’t do anything wrong. Send your grandparents the exact same message and tell my dad to get here ASAP. You turned the sound off right?” Watching from an undetectable view as the officer stepped out of his car, I took a long deep breaths. Living out of the country has been an absolute breeze and walk in the park in every way. Any encounter with law enforcement in Panama is beyond cordial and friendly. New York is a different ball game when it comes to cops and how they treat my people. Especially up here in Westchester. I understand why my folks moved back to their roots but I hate this fucking city so much. 

Sabrina, the kids, Diane and myself decided to take a trip back to the states to see my folks for the holidays. I was so busy trying to make sure the flight here was hiccup free that I forgot to get us a rental car. My dad being the gracious man that he is said we could borrow one of his in case we needed to go anywhere. Bri, my parents, her mom, and Ellena are back at the house. I had some last minute shopping to do so I brought Zay and the baby with me. 

Now I wish we had stayed at my parents with the rest of my family. It’s going on six in the evening which means the baby needs to be fed soon. Sabrina is going to curse me out if we don’t get back in time for Suleija’s next feeding. 

“Yeah, they got the message. Mom is responding now. Pop, I’m worried. What if Leija starts crying? I don’t want any trouble with the cops because the baby is upset. And you know she won’t settle unless you or mom have her.” Izaiah voicing his concern for this soon to come police encounter is making me more nervous. But he’s right about the baby not being able to calm down unless she’s in the arms of her mother or myself. 

“I know. I’m worried too but I need you do everything you can to stay calm and don’t say anything. Alright? Don’t even look at him when he gets up here. Your grandfather on his way right now, yes?” 

“Yeah. He said he should be here in fifteen.” 

Nodding in response I braced myself and handed Zay the bag with all of his sisters bottles inside. Everything my old man taught me about how to address and respond to law enforcement came back to me full circle. I feel seventeen, twenty-one and thirty-five years old all over again. 

“Keep that blanket over her. I don’t want this nigga looking at her face. An-and take one of her socks off so there’s proof she’s a baby and not something else. If she starts to fuss play with her foot enough to soothe her but not too much to draw attention to yourself. And please keep your left hand directly near my headrest. Keep your attention elsewhere. Do not look at this man in the eye.” The older Zay gets the harder I drill these protocols into his brain. Obviously I never want my son to have any sort of negative encounter with police but he needs to know how to protect himself in this situation. 

God forbid he should ever end up in this predicament. 

“I got you.” He replied. 

Once the man knocked against the car I rolled the window down and turned the radio all the way off. Placing my hands at the top of the steering wheel I stared at my wedding band, praying to myself. I just want to make it through this stop so I can get my kids and myself back to Sabrina. 

“License and registration.” The condescending tone in his voice made the hair on my arms stand up. I hate rude strangers. I despise strangers who talk down to other people even more. 

Cautiously I handed him everything he asked for without a word or a fight. Eyeing him from the side I controlled my breathing, waiting patiently. 

“Whose vehicle is this?” He asked. 

“It’s my father's car.” I said with a low sigh. 

“Don’t have an automobile of your own? You must be what, 35?” He continued on with his pissy attitude which is beginning to push my buttons. 

“I’m in town visiting family.” That’s all I care to explain. He doesn’t need to know where unless he asks. Which he probably will. I sensed his knack for being nosy the minute he opened his mouth. 

“That so, huh? Where is it that you live?” His weight shifted from right to left looking deeper into the truck. 

“Panama.” I simply answered. 

“Well do you know why I stopped you tonight?” Finally. The only thing I care to answer. 

“I do not.” I disagreed. 

“You failed to come to a complete stop back there. Do they not have stop signs down in Panama?” He snickered in such an annoying way. 

I can hear Izaiah talking shit at a very low tone. I want to set this boy straight so badly for even reacting but I can’t. 

“My mistake, I could’ve sworn I came to a complete stop.” I muttered. 

“Yeah well I’ll be right back. Don’t move.” He walked away and once I saw that he was sitting in his car I reach behind me to do what I’ve been waiting to do. 

“What the f- what is wrong with you?” Zay complained, trying to manage the pain at which he feels from me gripping the life out of his knee. 

“Don’t I always tell you to be quiet? Don’t make another fucking sound Izaiah I’m not fucking around. I’m not giving this bastard even the slightest reason to turn this situation into some shit we see on the news. I can handle this but you need to be quiet and not respond in away way.” Roughly releasing him from my grasp I asked for the Lord’s forgiveness for scaring my son and cursing in front of my little girl. “Where is he?” I questioned my dad’s whereabouts knowing he’s the only one who can truly help. 

“Five minutes away.” Zay gritted through clenched teeth. . 

Looking up in the mirror I dropped my shoulders seeing how pissed off he looks. 

“Forgive me. I’m scared out of my fucking mind and I don’t want anything to happen to you or your sister. Please don’t take my frustration to heart.” I apologized. 

Izaiah reaches forward and gripped my shoulder. “Don’t be. I understand and I’m sorry.”

We went back to our positions as the officer came back to the car. This time he checked out the exterior, the taillights, the tires, even ran his finger along the body. The second stunt he pulled by looking into the backseat made me twitch internally and externally. I’ve become very sensitive to other grown men all in the face my kids. Especially my daughters. All the tragic news stories about children being harmed in some way at the hands of an adult has both creeped me out and made me paranoid. 

The cop came back to the window handing me the registration and my drivers license back. 

“So tell me, where are you headed?” He began tapping the sole of his foot against the ground for no apparent reason. Even with the slight rain coming down and the other traffic passing us by I can hear his foot moving clear as day. 

“Back to my folks.” I stared ahead of me fighting the urge to touch my ring. 

“Hmph. I noticed your last name and it rings a couple bells. What’s your father do for a living?” Now, I’m at my breaking point. I only want two things. A ticket or being sent on my way. 

The sound of a door shutting peaked my interest. I saw him look past the car and mumble quietly to himself. 

“There a problem officer?” My dad’s voice had me silently crying in relief to have another pair of eyes watching this play out. 

“Can I help you?” The cop’s tone switched to defensive the closer my father came to the truck. 

“This is my car and my family. I want to know why you’re stopping my son.” 

“Well for your information, your son here failed to come to a complete stop. I’m trying to get some additional information as to his plans and destinations. You need to go back to your vehicle right now.”

“Can he have his ticket now or do I have to make my own call and have you suspended for unnecessary harassment?” 

“Excuse me?” 

“I didn’t stutter. I can have your boss on my line faster than you can touch that glock on your hip. Write the ticket or we’ll be on our way.” 

The worry is over now. My dad made me switch seats with him and the second he put the car in drive I leaned forward covering my face. My palms shook my entire head as I continued to rock myself in the passenger seat. 

“Relax son it’s over. Everything is alright now.” My dad encouraged. 

“Dad, your phone.” Zay said touching my back. 

I sat up and turned to take my cell. Sabrina’s face on the screen requesting to see me shook me up again. I answered and threw my head back against the seat. 

“Corey, what the hell happened?! Are you guys okay?” She freaks out a regular basis so now is nothing new. Since I have the baby with me, I know she’s more concerned than usual. 

Biting my lower lip I nodded. “We’re fine. My dad’s driving.” Exhaling sharply I cupped my hand over my mouth watching Bri get dressed. When I didn’t speak she paused to look at me longingly. 

“Are you okay, baby? Ser sincero conmigo.” She spoke softly. 

“Soy ahora. I’ll see you soon.” 

“Okay, I love you guys. Please be careful.” She begged. 

“Yeah I promise. We love you too.” Ending the call I closed my eyes not wanting to look at anything until I step in my parent’s house.

Shutting my door I worked with speed to undo the belts keeping the baby’s car seat strapped in. I see her feet dancing and I can hear squirm around telling me she’s about to wake up. My dad and Izaiah grabbed only minimal items knowing I don’t want the girls to see what I bought them. My dad ushered us inside to a full house. Friends of my folks, distant family and some of my old friends spread out amongst the house. 

Kicking off my shoes I unbuttoned the top of my shirt and went upstairs to get away from everybody. I opened our bedroom door, closed it quickly, and threw my head back against the wood eyeing the ceiling. 

“Corey?” I looked straight ahead to see Sabrina and Elle. I closed our distance and gently set the car seat by my feet to hug them. The smell of my wife and daughter put me back to where I was before I left this house. This warm, tingly, soul igniting sensation does wonders to my troubled mind. “I’m so glad you guys are okay.” She whispered. Her hands on my back and Ellena’s hands on my neck is really soothing to me. 

Kissing the top of Bri’s head I backed up to smother Elle in affection. 

“I missed you daddy.” Her eyelashes tickling my face and her small fingers against my skin made me smile. 

“I missed you too princess. You let mama give you a bath early tonight?” Fixing her collar I kissed her forehead and took her from Bri. 

“Yeah. Where’s my brother?” She asked, holding me close. 

“With grandpa.” I said to her. Rubbing Ellena’s back I used my free hand to finish undoing this shirt. 

“Was she fussy?” Sabrina asked. She stood tall with the baby removing her other sock and going to sit on the bed. 

“Not at all. I was scared she was gonna wake up when I got stopped but she didn’t. I can’t believe that happened. I know without a doubt in my mind that I fully stopped before turning.” Laying next to the girls I pat Elle on the back, basking in the sound of her breathing in my ear. 

“I hope they don’t expect you to stick around to go to court for this ticket. We’ll be gone by New Year’s Eve. Oh you’re hungry, my love. That’s why you look so angry. Don’t worry, mama’s got you covered.” 

Waving one of my arms around I stopped searching when I got a hold of Bri’s upper thigh. 

“Are you sure you’re alright? How bad was it?” She pressed on. 

“My nerves made the entire situation drag on. Every little thing overloaded me with so much anxiety. I kept thinking of little scenarios and how they would play out. If Zay and Leija weren’t with me, I wouldn’t have felt so caught off guard and defensive. I haven’t felt that scared to be alive since Zay was taken away from me.” The visuals of so many years ago when my bitter ex planted drugs me intensified my bad mood. 

“Daddy, be quiet please. Baby sister is resting.” Elle demanded for silence so Leija could enjoy her milk in peace filled this room with laughter. 

“Oh my goodness. She is so dramatic.” Bri gasped. 

“I’m sorry princess. I didn’t mean to be so loud.” Stretching out I felt around to see if Bri was wearing anything underneath of her dress. Not feeling anything aside from skin I chuckled to myself. 

“What are you laughing at? What is with your quick change in moods?” Sabrina’s pat on the back of my hand to stop me from going further I laughed some more. 

“I’ll tell you later.” I grinned. 

The girls and I spent some alone time upstairs for a little while. I know my parents will probably be disappointed with my disappearance but it was necessary. My family time towers over the need to please other people just so they don’t feel offended. I also got to take a shower to wash the chip off my shoulder. Ellena looked after her baby sister since I needed to talk to Lori in private about how I was feeling earlier. 

Helping Elle off the last step I walked beside her with the baby against my chest. 

“Daddy, I’m hungry. Tengo comida?” She clung to my hand and shirt the louder the voices grew. 

“Hambre? A esta hora de la noche?” I teased, tickling her scalp. She removed my hand fro her hair and began nibbling at my fingers as we rounded the corner. 

“Yes..” She giggled.

“I’ll find you something baby girl. Don’t even worry.” Guiding her where to go I listened out for Lori desperately hoping she comes down soon. I can’t tell my parents this but I would rather everyone leave now. I’m not in the mood or right frame of mind to converse with this many people. 

“Corey, where is Sabrina?” My mother asked coming out of the living room. 

Turning to her with Elle clinging to my hip I motioned upstairs. 

“Oh, okay. Do you want to-”

Shaking my head I saw my dad’s brother walking into the kitchen. “Not right now, ma. It’s not the time. Speaking of time..when are they leaving?” Feeling Leija touch my cheek I looked down at my baby to find her sizing me up. The act tickled me simply because she looks so much like her mother when she’s bothered by something. 

“Will you relax? These aren’t strangers to us, baby, they’re family and friends so be nice.” My mom and uncle made conversation thankfully leaving me out of it. I’m focused on my kids at the moment. All this time spent not involved in family functions or conversations has put a hole in my heart. I don’t even consider these people real family to me. Maybe for my parents they have that title but not me because I take family seriously. 

These people don't mean as much as they used to, to me. We share the same relatives and blood line but they’re not family. Sabrina, our kids, and my parents are the definition of family. Even Brian and Ravyn are closer to me than everybody here.

“Cake please, right there.” Elle spoke up. 

“Didn’t you eat already? I could’ve sworn mommy said she fed you while I was gone.” Helping her onto a barstool I walked around the counter to get her something to drink. 

“But papi I’m hungry again. Please..please!” I sat a cup of apple juice in front of Elle watching her place a straw in it. 

“What do you want Ellena? I mean real food not dessert.” I questioned. The sound of recognizable footsteps could be heard as Elle rambled about everything she wants to eat at once. 

“Are you asking for more food, little girl?” Lori sang. Her entry earned her so much attention. That irritated me. Everything except for my family is irritating right now. 

“Mama, quiero comer. Puedes ayudar a papi?”

Sabrina’s light hearted giggle sparked life and warmth into me. I won’t bother allowing anyone else to take away how good it feels to have my wife in the same room as me. Lori waltzed over in my direction appearing happy as a clam. 

“She thinks you need my help. In the kitchen? That’s the cutest thing she’s ever said.” She beamed. “And how are you doing, my love?” I stood still at the stove making Elle something to eat while Lori entertained the baby. 

“Little does she know.” I smirked. 

“Little does she. So...where’s Izaiah? I haven’t seen him since he came in.” Sabrina started entertaining the both of us as more people seemed to walk in. The increase in volume is making it that much harder to drown out the other voices. Judging by Sabrina being so intimate let’s me know that she’s trying to keep me calm. Distracted too. She knows I won’t bring any attention to us now. Not with Leija in my arms or Ellena right behind me. “You really don’t seem happy with everyone here. I don’t care because I don’t really know them all that well but I feel bad for you.” She mumbled, reaching around me to take a bowl out of the cabinet. 

Shrugging without obvious care for their presence or existence for that matter, I turned the stove eye down. “To be honest I would be much happier if they were all out of my face. I just want peace and quiet.” Taking the bowl from her hands I looked around for any bread or rolls knowing Elle will beg for it. I found some homemade rolls my mom made the other day, cut one up and began toasting it. 

“You need something else. Peace and quiet is not going to remove this tension from your body. Or any part of you for that matter. Give me that I’ll do it.” Stepping back so Sabrina could finish what I started I put bounce in my step purely for Leija’s enjoyment. 

“If you’re offering and willing..” I left the statement open, curious to see if she’ll take the bait. Knowing that she will. “If you catch my drift.” Chuckling at her eye roll I took a seat at the counter right beside Elle. 

“Oh honey I’m doing far more than just offering. I’m suggesting and advising.” Sabrina turned the stove off and ladled a small amount of curry into the bowl for Ellena. 

“Baby sister have some too?” She asked. 

“No baby sister can’t have anything but milk. Please Ellena be careful, it’s hot.” 

Hard, loud, repetitive knocks rang out through the house scaring Elle and Leija both. The baby is now upset and Elle is begging for someone to get the door. 

“I got it, Carla, I’ll take care of it just go back in the kitchen with everybody.” I heard my dad say. 

Rising from my chair I encouraged Elle to eat and handed the baby over to Lori. 

“Corey, where are you going?” She called after me. 

“I’ll be right back.” I said. Making it to the door I walked around my dad to come face to face with the cop who pulled me over earlier tonight. “What the fuck are you doing here? And how did you find out where I’m staying?” My attitude came off strong but I’m not afraid this time. He caught me off guard earlier but I’ll be damned if I let him do it twice in one day. 

“Whoa there son, I’m not here for any-”

He shut up the minute I stepped into his personal space. 

“Corey, don’t.” My dad warned me. 

“I’m not your son. You’ve got two minutes to explain why you’re here before I slam this door in your face.” I warned him. 

“Your ticket. I want to see you in court for disrespecting an officer and lying to one.” 

“First off, fuck you. Secondly, you can forget about the ticket. You had your chance to write it the first time you stopped me and you passed up on it. You have a lot of nerve coming here trying to force me to accept a ticket I don’t deserve. Three, I didn’t lie to you about anything. Have a good night.” I got most of the door shut until I felt him fighting me back. 

My dad stepped in between us working harder to get this guy out of the doorway. “Both of you cut it out! Corey, move. Now.” 

Doing as he told me I held my breath in. 

“And you. What grounds do you have coming to my home at this time of night trying to serve a ticket that you opted out of hours ago? I warned you earlier. I’m done playing around. Get off my property and I will not ask again.”

Closing the door behind me, I removed my shirt and laid it across the chair. Following the noise I pushed the bathroom door open to find Leija in her bathtub playing with her feet. 

Sabrina is stretched out in the bathtub brushing her hair. “I figured you should bathe her tonight since you didn’t get the chance last night.” She uttered. Her tone reeked of disgust from my behavior downstairs in front of so many people. With our kids present she’s even more pissed. 

My dad’s long time friend who’s also a lawyer and the local chief of police were also involved from tonight’s double encounter with that cop. He really tried to force me to take a ticket he failed to give me hours ago. I don’t think his actions were brave for showing up at my dad’s front door when he did. I think the guy was stupid as shit. He should’ve stayed wherever he was but lucky for him I didn’t get to put my hands on him. But we did exchange some words amongst some other unnecessary actions. 

With so many eyes present I would’ve been a fool to start a fight that would have surely ended up with me in handcuffs. I can’t afford any trouble being that I no longer live in this country. Our flight home is in two days so that’s another reason I can’t get myself into trouble. 

With a heavy sigh I put a smile on my face for Leija. “You love the taste of your own feet huh?” Turning the water on to get warm I washed my hands thoroughly before washing her up. Glancing over to my left I caught Lori eyeing me. She pretended not to but it was too late. “You’re mad aren’t you?” I assumed. 

“No. I’m disappointed.” That dry ass laugh of hers echoed throughout the bathroom and then it faded. 

“Why? Because I didn’t let him play me into accepting that ticket? I didn’t deserve it from the beginning.” Picking up the washcloth Bri has laid across Leija’s tub I lathered the fabric in soap. Little mama is trying to keep up with my movements but every second of action is taking her by surprise. 

“Dammit Corey...ese no es el punto! Como se atreve a decir que a mi? Como te atreves? Usted actuó como un niño y en frente de los huespedes, tambien?” She fired back facing my direction not bothering to hide her anger. 

“You really think I care about what those people think about my actions? News flash Sabrina, I don’t. The only opinions that matter to me are yours, our kids, and my parents. And besides I wasn’t in the wrong, entirely.” Grabbing Leija’s foot I ran the washcloth through her toes making her laugh. “You’re ticklish on your feet just like mommy.” Leaning over I kissed her cheek several times over. 

“You were stupid. Simple as that. What if he tried to arrest you or worse? Then what? Huh? We’ve only been here for two days and look what’s happened already? What are you gonna do if he serves you to go to court? What then?” Draining the tub Lori stepped out, dried off, and forcefully took her bathrobe off the hook on the wall. 

Pumping soap into my palm I rubbed my hands together and placed them on the sides of Leija’s neck. Moving my hands around delicately I rubbed the area down being sure not to miss a spot. Leija’s become a messy eater. After her feedings she typically has milk right under her chin in the folds of her skin. So, Lori and I have to make sure we thoroughly clean underneath our baby’s neck after she eats. 

Thinking about what Bri said, I sighed feeling myself get a little annoyed. Not with her but with the day itself. “I highly doubt that because he didn’t have probable cause to arrest me. I wasn’t trying to start nothing baby I swear I wasn’t. I simply wanted an explanation for why he came by and how he found out where I was. That’s it.” I finished bathing Leija just in time to stop Lori from storming out. Wrapping the baby in her special towel that’s partially a robe, I closed the bathroom door with my foot. 

“Usted todavía esta perdiendo el punto. Corey, move your foot.” Bri whined. 

“You hear all this nonsense? Mommy thinks I acted stupid and childish. Basically I was another version of your big sister. And she’s mad at me now.” Matching my baby’s giggles I took her out of the tub and stood in front of Sabrina. 

“It’s not funny, stop that. And move out of my way, I don’t want to be around you right now.” Lori tried taking the baby from me but I didn’t let her. 

Deciding to lighten the mood I spun Leija around so Sabrina had no choice but to appear a little less angry. I don’t know how but Leija has managed to pick up on our bad moods. If either one of us is frowning or we look upset, Suleija cries. She has a full blown meltdown no matter where we are or who is around. 

“Tell mama to fix her face.” I whispered in Leija’s ear, placing my face right next to hers. She turned to look at me and frantically focused on her mom. Sabrina lightened her facial expression just as the baby started to fuss. Her shoulders fell and her eyes closed quickly. Placing our baby directly in front of her I silently counted the seconds until she opened her eyes. 

Thirteen seconds later and Bri was sporting half a genuine smile. “para ti solo mi amor. You want milk?” Trading places with me Bri began drying off Leija’s head. “Si, quieres leche?” 

I stretched out beside Sabrina watching her prepare for the nightly feeding session. She was cautious not to lay on her hair in order to get comfortable against the headboard. Not a sound came from me but my little girl wasn’t playing along. She pulled and tugged on her mother’s ear drinking her heart away. 

“So are you really mad at me?” I quizzed, sitting up to watch her work. Rolling her eyes again she nudged me with her foot. Catching it I began massaging her sole. “Don’t ignore me, Delores.” 

“I just don’t want to talk about it anymore. You respect my wishes any other time babe why can’t you do it now?” She complained. “Can you tell your daddy to leave me alone? You’ll tell him that for me?” 

“I always do but I want to know if you’re mad at me. I don’t wanna talk about it anymore than you do but I care how you feel towards me regardless if the feeling is good or bad.” 

Sabrina bargained with me that it I let her feed Leija in peace she would reopen the conversation about the cop. I accepted and made the move to go talk to Izaiah. I haven’t seen him since we got out of the car but it’s time for him and I to discuss the stop. My folks know that I treasure them and will always be a flight away but I’m beyond ready to go home and sleep in my bed with my wife. The Christmas holiday is almost over and so is this vacation. 

Panama, we’re on our way.

The Montreal Problem

Chapter 4

Summary: The reader has big plans to spend a month in Montreal with her boyfriend. The problem? He breaks up with her just as her flight is leaving. Now she’s going to be stuck in an unfamiliar city for a month with no place to stay. That is, until an unexpected hero offers her a solution.

Author’s Note: So, so sorry for posting so late! Today was way busier than it was supposed to be, BUT I’m still posting it before it’s technically tomorrow! (By only 10 minutes and in my timezone, but still, I did it). 

Shoutout to everyone who told me to post today because I’m so excited about the chapters from here on out. Also shoutout to all of you asking to be on the tag-list! Seeing such a long list at the end of this chapter makes me so happy, so thank you all!! This chapter was a lot of fun to write as it’s kind of the moment when things start to pick up in the story. I hope you guys enjoy it! And I’ll almost definitely be posting at least one more time before the weekend is over (but probably two times, because who am I kidding)

Golden light spilled between the curtains and fell across your face. You groaned and squinted grumpily at the sun before rolling over. You were so comfortable, but so exhausted. You peeked at the time on your phone. It was after eleven in the morning, and you had a few missed texts.

The most recent was from Tom. Rented a car for the month. Hope you don’t mind small SUVs. Also, I have no idea if you can drive legally in Canada with an American license, but the keys are on the kitchen counter.

You read one from Harrison next. We’re all on set until this evening. Tom rented a car for you. Googled it and your license is valid as long as you have proof of insurance or something.

Your heart leapt a little at the two texts. You were getting royal treatment from these strangers. Tom was paying for your stay, which had all been Harrison’s idea. You flopped back onto the pillows and sighed. This was...crazy.

There was a text from your boyfriend with an address and time of where to meet for lunch the next day. You clung to those words, to the hope that in twenty-four hours you might be moving in with him for the month instead of living here.

And then there were the texts from your mom. With all of the “moving day” business the day before, you had forgotten to tell her that you’d arrived safely. Her texts went from polite to angry. You hurriedly texted back, telling her a half-truth about crashing as soon as you’d gotten back. You replied to your other texts as well. You realized, too, that you had about twenty new follow requests from various fan accounts for Tom. You ignored them all.

You spent the day lounging around, exploring the house and backyard, breathing in the cool Canadian air. You were almost at peace.

The boys got home in a burst of noise and laughter just as you were about to heat up leftover pizza for dinner--which is what you had had for lunch, too. Not that you minded.

You blinked in surprise, still in the same sweats and tshirt from last night. Harry came in first, a camera hanging around his neck.

“--nose for the third time,” he was saying. Tom was shaking his head as he pushed past his brother.

“I did not! I landed it just fine, it was the wind--” Tom argued.

“Mate, you tripped,” Harrison laughed wildly, appearing next. You heard Sam in the next room laughing. You were still standing in the same place, fridge door open, pizza box in hand. They didn’t seem to notice you at the moment.

You quietly shut the fridge and put the pizza box on the counter.

“You’re not eating pizza again, are you Y/N?” Harry asked. “Tom’s taking us out tonight to celebrate not breaking his nose for the third time.”

“It was the wind!” Tom called from upstairs. Laughter echoed in the kitchen.

“No, that’s okay, I’ll eat here. I like pizza,” you said.

“Unacceptable, Y/N,” Harrison said with fake gravity. “If Tom has it in his head to treat us, let him. We use as much money of his as we can.”

“I heard that!” Tom’s voice called, more distant than before. “You parasites!”

“It’s true though!” Harrison shouted back. He turned back to you. “Can you be ready in twenty minutes or so?”

“No problem.” You hurried off to your room to begin digging through your clothes.

You hadn’t hung anything up before falling asleep, but thankfully de-wrinkle spray existed and you had a bottle. You picked your least sexy dress, a gray and white, long-sleeved tshirt dress, and paired it with a pair of short boots. You pulled your hair up, swiped on mascara and eyeliner, and called it good. At the last second you remembered deodorant.

You were back in the living room in ten minutes. Sam was already there, slouched on the couch, scrolling through his phone. He glanced up at you and smiled.

“You look nice,” he said politely before promptly going back to his phone.

“Thank you,” you murmured, a bit embarrassed.

“Hey, di--oh, hey, Y/N,” Harrison said as he burst into the room. You were certain he’d been about to call Sam some sort of name, and smiled. “You look great.”

“Thanks,” you said again. Your face grew even hotter than before. You almost said, You, too, because he did look great. He’d changed into a black button up and gray jacket.

Tom was the last one down, his hair freshly damp from a shower, wearing a simple black tshirt and jacket. You thought that he looked good, too, and immediately felt guilty for it.

Tomorrow, you thought, Tomorrow and I’ll be back where I’m supposed to be.

The ride to dinner was a rowdy one. Harry and Harrison gleefully told you a story about how Tom had been showing off for Daisy Ridley--dropping her name so casually you felt faint just thinking about it--and almost broke his nose because he tripped. Tom kept insisting that the wind was strong and knocked him off balance, which only made the other boys laugh harder. Sam was mostly quiet the whole ride, like you were. You got the feeling that he was shy, too.

The restaurant was more casual than you’d been expecting, which turned out to be a good thing. You all seemed to beat the dinner crowd because the place was mostly empty. The twins both told you to order whatever you want. You weren’t sure if they were joking, so you kept it simple. You had money with you too, just in case.

Somehow, you ended up between Sam and Harrison. You ended up being glad, because Sam provided you with a quiet, steady conversational partner that balanced nicely with the rowdiness of the other three.

“They like to put on a show,” Sam said at one point after your food came. Tom was regaling them with a hilarious story about the time he’d tried to pick up a girl using the Spider-Man card, only for her to laugh in his face. “They’re showing off because there’s a girl around.” He grinned. “It’ll calm down in a few days once they get used to you.”

“Yeah, they’re pretty...hyper,” you noted with half a smile. Harrison and Tom were currently arm wrestling instead of eating. You were pretty sure it was part of some complex betting system, but hadn’t worked it out completely.

“They are,” Sam agreed. “But....well, they’re always like this. Just less...this.”

For the most part, you were entertained. Your cheeks and sides hurt from laughing and you were no longer worrying about your lunch date the following day. You thanked Tom profusely for dinner as you all piled back into the car. Somehow you ended up with the passenger seat, which also seemed to be part of the betting system the boys had going on. Tom won the arm wrestling match and forced Harrison to give up his usual seat.

“Want to come to set tomorrow?” Tom asked as he drove. The backseat was suspiciously quiet, broken only by the occasional hushed laugh. You suspected that there may be a video of Tom almost breaking his nose. “Daisy’ll be there, and Nick Jonas, and I could introduce you and--”

You bit your lip. “I’m sorry, I can’t. I’m meeting B/F/N for lunch.”

The entire car fell quiet.

“B/F/N?” Tom repeated. “As in, your ex-boyfriend?”

“Yeah. We’re going to meet and...talk.”

Tom hummed but said nothing else. The others stayed quiet for a while, finally breaking out in hushed whispers again as Tom turned into what you recognized as the neighborhood.

You leaned a little closer to him. “I think they’re up to something,” you said quietly.

“Oh, most definitely,” Tom whispered back with a grin. “They almost always are.”

“Do they gang up on you?” you asked, genuinely curious.

“All the time. I’m an easy target, I think. But I don’t get as embarrassed as Haz or Sam do about stuff.”

He turned into the driveway.

“Thank you, again,” you told him in the moment before he turned off the ignition as the others got out.

“You’re welcome, darling,” he murmured. “But no need to keep thanking me.”

“Sorry. I just--thanks.” You mentally smacked your forehead. “Sorry!”

Tom laughed good-naturedly and led the way inside.

You forgot about your lunch the next day until you climbed into bed. You were no longer sure you wanted things to work out as they should. Part of you--a larger part that you would readily admit--wanted to stick around and get to know these unexpected new friends.

The next morning, you told yourself that it was stupid to dress up so nice for lunch with a guy trying to break up with you, but you were going to do it anyway. Hell, it was stupid of you to go in the first place. But you couldn’t help clingy tightly to the last remnants of hope for your relationship. You wracked your brain for anything you may have done wrong over the past few months. You practiced a speech about devoting yourself to the relationship, about sacrificing everything you were doing to move to Montreal for the next six months.

You bounded down the hall in the morning, makeup and hair perfect, wearing the wine-red dress that B/F/N had always adored. It was probably too fancy for lunch, but you dressed it down with your shoes and a casual jacket. You wanted to make an impression, was all.

You let a surprised shriek upon finding Sam lurking in the kitchen, making himself brunch or a snack or something.

“Sorry!” you exclaimed. “I thought you all had left by now.”

Sam smirked at your reaction. “Nah, Harry and I took  the morning off to edit a project. What’re you all dressed up for?”

“Lunch. With B/F/N. Remember?”

“Ahh. Well...have...fun?” Sam flushed red and promptly disappeared.

You put the restaurant’s address into your GPS and grabbed the keys for the rental car. Thankfully, it was only about twenty to thirty minutes away according to your phone.

You beat B/F/N to the restaurant and waited at the table for at least fifteen minutes. You were used to it, though. He had never been one to be strictly punctual. It didn’t cross your mind at first that he might have stood you up. But as time passed, you grew more anxious. You fiddled with your phone and debated texting Harrison just for something to do.

The bell over the front door dinged. You looked up, and there he was. Your stomach twisted into knots. Your body’s automatic response was to be excited, happy--making you feel like you were finally home. But you were also nervous and afraid.

“Hi,” you managed to croak out when he approached your table. He slid into the seat with barely a glance in your direction. You held yourself back from taking his hand, touching his arm, reaching out to brush his hair from his face.

“Hey,” he said softly. He opened up the menu and frowned at it. You’d had time to pick what you wanted, something else you were used to.

Several minutes passed in silence as he decided what to order and then as you both ordered. You hurriedly told the waiter that your check would be separate.

Finally, he looked up at you. As your eyes met, something pierced your heart. You could tell by his expression that there was no hope, yet you weren’t going to give up.

“So, where are you staying?” he asked eventually.

“Just...with some friends.” You didn’t feel like explaining the situation. It was too complicated, for one, and you didn’t want him telling you how irresponsible you were staying with four boys, either.

“You have friends in Montreal?” he asked, skeptical.

You shrugged. “Where are you staying?”

“Not far from here, actually. I’m set up in that big apartment building a few blocks that way.” He pointed. “It’s nice, I guess. Close to the office.”

Your heart was beginning to hurt. He suddenly seemed so far away from you.  

The food arrived; soup and a sandwich for you, a panini for him. You took a couple bites but found you weren’t hungry.

“Look, B/F/N,” you finally said. “I just...I don’t understand. Why can’t we give it another go? We can make it work. I’ll--I’ll stay here until you can transfer back home. I’ll find a part-time job. Something. Just--please.” You hated that your voice sounded so desperate but couldn’t stop. “Please.”

He very carefully set his sandwich on his plate and wiped his mouth. He was avoiding your gaze again. He took a sip of water, glanced out of the window, and then cleared his throat.

Still looking outside, he said, very quietly, “We can’t give it a try. We gave it a try for months. It--It’s just not going to work.”

You bit the inside of your cheek to keep from crying. “But...why?”

Now he looked sad, truly sad. He looked like he was about to tell you that your grandmother was dying or something.

“Y/N...there’s another girl.”

You rocked back in your chair as if he had physically hit you. Your eyes went wide with shock and disbelief. Another girl? What did that mean? What was he saying? It took you several long minutes to find your voice.

“Another girl?” you repeated dumbly.

“Yeah, I...I don’t know. She works here, too, and we’re both getting transferred to Chicago in six months.” He shrugged.

“Have you--have you been cheating on me?” you demanded in a shrill voice.

He gave you a sharp look and shushed you. “No! No. I wouldn’t--I told her we were going to wait until you and I talked. I wouldn’t do that to you, Y/N, I’m not an asshole.”

You laughed bitterly. “Oh, so just because you haven’t slept with her, you haven’t cheated on me? You are an asshole. You--you waited until last minute before I came here to break up with me. You abandoned me in a foreign city and--” You stood abruptly. You couldn’t sit there any longer. Your chair fell over behind you with a loud clatter. People were staring now, but you didn’t care. “You left me here with no money and nowhere to stay, B/F/N. And you cheated on me.”

The tears were flowing now, but you still managed to glare at him as you gathered the keys and your purse.

“Just--fuck you.” With that, you walked out of the restaurant, shoulders hunched and shaking, face hot and wet with tears.

You turned the corner towards where you’d parked and sank onto a bench. You cried for a long, long time, your chest an empty shell. More than one person stopped to ask if you were okay--one person stopped to tell you to cry somewhere else--but you ignored them all.

An hour later, you wiped your eyes and made yourself get in the car and drive back to the house. You managed to stop yourself from crying for the drive, focusing wholly on not wrecking or getting lost.

Harrison was lounging on the couch when you got back. Harry and Sam were nowhere to be found, either in a different room or gone for the day. You froze, hoping your face didn’t look like you’d been crying for an hour.

He practically leapt to his feet when he heard the front door shut. “Y/N!” he said cheerfully. “How was lunch?”

“What are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be on set?”

He hesitated. “No...I mean, yeah. But I came back for lunch and to, ah, see what...you were...up to…” he said slowly.

“Oh. Where are the twins? They were here when I left.”

“Went out for lunch, I suppose.” He shoved his hands in his jeans pockets. “How was yours? Lunch, I mean.”

“It was…” You swallowed hard. You tried again. “It was--”

“Not good?” Harrison finished sympathetically.

You nodded, and your face crumpled. You sucked in a shuddering breath and tried to stop the tears. “I’m sorry,” you said around the lump in your throat. “I keep doing this to you.”

“No, no, no, it’s alright, love,” Harrison said gently. He strode over to you and gently touched your arm. “I’m sorry.”

“He--he ch-cheated on me,” you managed to get out. You started crying harder.

Harrison cursed softly. Then he was suddenly pulling you close, wrapping his arms around you, gently stroking your hair. “I’m sorry,” he repeated again.

You didn’t cry for nearly as long this time, and you figured it might have something to do with the cute, kind boy holding you. He smelled vaguely like grass and fresh laundry and boy. You gently disentangled yourself and managed a smile.

“I’m sorry I keep bursting into tears on you like that,” you said sheepishly. “I promise I don’t usually cry all the time.”

Harrison smiled. “It’s okay, I know it’s either because of your break-up...or my ugly face.” He winked.

“You’re not ugly,” you said defensively before you could think about the words. You blushed. So did he.

“Well...thanks,” he mumbled. The tips of his ears were bright red. He rubbed the back of his neck with one hand. “Got any plans for the rest of the day?”

“No. I thought I’d stay here and just...relax.”

Harrison studied you for a moment with his piercing blue eyes. Then he nodded. “Alright then. Well, I should be getting back to set. Want to...come tomorrow?”

You gave him a genuine smile. “I’d like that. Very much.”

He grinned back at you.

The boys all got back relatively late that night. You’d eaten pizza again and fallen asleep on the couch with a book on your chest.

“--was so cool, I didn’t really know how to react,” one of them was exclaiming. You woke with a start. You managed to catch your book before it hit the floor. Another of the boys cracked a joke and they all laughed.

“Shit, shh shh!” one of them said. It sounded like Tom. “She’s sleeping! Shh!”

They quieted down. They were like children, though, and their “quiet” wasn’t really very quiet. The noise moved into the kitchen where something was dropped. There were muffled curses and laughter.

A smile grew on your face.

You got up quietly and padded down the hall to your room. You didn’t make it far before you bumped into someone. Harrison.

“Sorry,” you both said at the same time.

“Off to bed already?” he asked.

“Mm, yeah. Long day. Plus it’s already--” You checked the time on your phone. “--almost eleven.”

“Are you still...coming to set tomorrow?” You thought that his expression was hopeful but told yourself you were reading too much into it.

“Of course! I can’t pass up the chance to meet a Jonas brother. And Rey.” Your face went blank for a second just thinking about the big stars. “Oh my god--maybe I shouldn’t go. I’ll just embarrass myself.”

“Oh, come on, darling,” Tom’s voice said from behind you. “You’ve already met Spider-Man and haven’t embarrassed yourself.”

You grinned a bit mischievously. “No offense, Tom...but you aren’t as famous as Nick Jonas or Daisy Ridley.”

A chorus of Ooh!s and Oh shit!s came from Tom’s two brothers and best friend. They all cracked up. Tom held up his hands in surrender.

“Ouch, Y/N,” he said. He placed a hand on his heart like you had stabbed him in the chest.

“Here,” Sam said with a laugh as he passed a couple of ice cubes to Tom. “For the burn.”

That set them all off again. “Tom, you just aren’t that famous,” Harry kept repeating, doubled over with laughter. Harrison said, “Sorry, mate,” more than once through his laughter. Tom kept pretending to be wounded, but he was laughing just as hard. You couldn’t help but laugh along until your sides hurt.

Things finally settled down and you bid them all goodnight. As the other three disappeared in various directions, Harrison grabbed your wrist in his hand.

He stared into your eyes for a long moment. You had never seen eyes in such a pale shade of blue before. You thought he was going to say something, like he was sorry about B/F/N or something else, but all he said was a soft, “Goodnight, Y/N,” before he let you go.

You watched him go. “Goodnight, Harrison.”

Scent of a Human Chapter I (Batman FF)

A/N: I’m very sure you’re all surprised to see the title. Well, I have written them a year ago but never uploaded them on anywhere until today. This story features an OC and it’s another time/dimensional travelling fic! This time to Gotham! This FF is based on Nolan-verse Batman movie. Random upload but for some reason, I was like I wanna share this with others.

It wasn’t easy building a new life from the ground in a world you didn’t exist. From the beginning, the fate has been against her. She had no idea how she came to be in this world, a world that should have stayed, in utmost logic, fictional. She was 24 when she found herself lost in what she soon came to realise, Gotham. Two years has passed and it was the most difficult, arduous two years she’ll probably experience in her life. She had nothing other than a small backpack on her back and in the bag was her wallet, phone, key, few snacks and a water bottle. Thankfully her money was genuine enough to be accepted by the stores and cheap motels, but her cards she later found out the hard way, were ‘fraudulent’.

The little money she had on her didn’t even last her a full week and soon ended up on the street, begging for spare changes until a homeless charity worker found her rough sleeping in the alley next to the trash cans. She had been on the street for approximately six months or so, approximate because she didn’t really keep up with the time she’s been here. She didn’t want to move from the small area of street she claimed, a home she could call ever since she lost her first one. They half forcibly took her from her safe corner because she was young and hadn’t been on the street for a long time and more importantly, she was a young female. Being a young female in the street was a disaster waiting to happen, and she was grateful the most closest danger she got to was an assault. A fellow rough sleeper stole her bag and can of money she made on that day and he was more concerned with taking what she had than taking a step further.

“What is your name?” A kind looking woman asked in a gentle tone, “How old are you?”

She didn’t answer. Instead, she burst into loud cry. Crying, it seemed, was an everyday occurrence for her. She’d cry several times a day, whether she was eating, sleeping, doing nothing thinking of her life she had in her world, she had a job, her parents, two lousy but close brother and sister. She had something. It wasn’t much, but still she had something.

“Please help me.” She managed out in trembling tone.

The woman, taking her plea for help at face value, rubbed a hand down her arm in gesture meant to be soothing.

“Don’t worry, we’re here.”

“Anne?”

The hostel she was assigned in also had a mental health centre where group of clinicians would visit once a week to those in need. They suspected she had depression or some sort of mental health and had persuaded her to take part in group and one-to-one counselling session offered by the charity. She refused at first, counselling session required that both the client and therapist be truthful to each other which she absolutely cannot unless she want to be institutionalised. Not that she had anything to lose from being institutionalised; she’ll have a roof over her head, warm three meals a day, healthcare and somewhere permanent at least.

“Give it a try, Anne.” Emma, the woman who found and brought her in, grinned, “Everything you say would be confidential and having someone to talk to would be good for you.”

She didn’t know how she actually agreed to it, everything seems to happen in a blur to her these days but she was sitting with a doctor who could not have been much older than in the sofa who with glasses that framed his piercing blue stares that regarded her like a new specimen brought into his lab. She wasn’t much fan of Batman comic or movies or materials related to it, but she had seen the movies to realise who the man standing in front of her with the face of the familiar actor whose notable feature were his ocean blue eyes.

She couldn’t remember the actor’s name but she repeated inwardly that this man was not the actor, but a character who wore his face and a very different man.

“Hello, Miss. Reyes.” He gave her a smile that was supposed to make her comfortable but it didn’t reach his cold eyes and his smile was icy and impersonal, “I’m Dr. Jonathan Crane, please take a sit.”

He gestured to a small armchair in front of him and Anne took a step back.

“I don’t want to do this anymore.” She said, feeling like a child who decided to be brave and offered herself to be vaccinated first among her peers only to falter at the sight of the needle that was more painful-looking than she had expected.

There was that smile again, she noted as he leaned back and said, “I understand you must be feeling much distress–“ Oh you have no idea “–and perturbation from your recent experience but that is why I am here. Please, Miss. Reyes, sit down.”

This only wanted to make her run and disappear into the street. But something about his imposing stares and overall unnerving presence seemed to force her down into the armchair albeit with great reluctance.

He flicked through a folded paper tucked in the file before glancing up at her, “Before we begin, I want you to know that anything you or I say in this room will remain confidential. The only circumstance where I must disclose the information is if I must uphold my duty to protect and care for you and others or when consulting colleague provided that I first obtain your permission to do so and I will do my best to conceal your identity and any associated parties involved. Do you understand?”

“Yes.”

“There isn’t much information about you, is there?” He gestured to the thin paper he held up.

The only thing she had given them was her name, age and earliest known month she remembered seeing in the newspaper while she was still on the street. She had no IDs and because of that, she had nearly been denied the shelter, but because there was greater risk for her out in the street, which made her a priority, they had taken her in although what must be done after was much more difficult, if not impossible. Like trying to find a permanent accommodation, background check or open a bank account, or applying for any government benefit she could be eligible for; the list was endless. She was a dead woman, but even a dead woman had some sort of record of her life if one dug for it. She was a non-existent dead woman.

Emma assured her that this was a common problem amongst her clients, that people like her were ‘pseudo-citizens’ because they had little to no proof that they actually existed on paper or system.

He closed the file, “Shall we discuss more about you before I do any assessment? It’s said that you cannot remember where you lived and that your IDs has been stolen, correct?”

She nodded.

“When is the earliest memory you have that you can remember?”

“…Six months ago.”

“When you first started rough sleeping?”

She nodded.

“Do you remember sustaining any head injuries prior to your memory loss? Any sign that you may have sustained such wounds, such as sensitivity in the skull area? Repeated episode of vomiting? Sudden bruising or swelling around the eyes or behind ears? Loss of hearing or double visions?”

Anne paused to think, it’d be easier for him to think she had amnesia from the injury. She nodded.

“What symptoms have you experienced?”

“Vomiting, umm..double visions, my head felt sensitive for few days like I’ve bumped it somewhere.”

He jotted down into his notepad.

“And where were you when you’ve noticed the gap in your memory.”

“I was just on the street with my bag.” She said, “I had some money but that ran out so I started to…” She felt her cheeks redden, it wasn’t the most dignifying thing to say you were homeless, “..Sleep rough.”

“And in your bag, what was in there?”

“My wallet and my phone.”

“And you had some form of IDs in your wallet before it was stolen?”

She nodded.

“Was there a driving license?”

She nodded.

“And in that, there was your picture with name and your date of birth?”

She nodded.

“There should have been your house address there as well, do you remember?”

She shook her head after faltering for a moment.

“Why? You must have tried to find your way back home, no?”

“I-I….it was far.”

“How far?”

“I couldn’t afford it.”

“And you can’t remember the address.”

“I forgot. I’m not good at remembering.”

“Before your head injury or after.”

“Even before.” She snapped, “Is this really necessary?”

His eyes slightly narrowed, as if he felt something amiss with her story, “Yes, Miss. Reyes. As your therapist, the only way we can work with each other is if we remain truthful to each other. That means telling me everything you know, and it will be confidential as I assured you in the beginning.”

“I want to go home, but I can’t, OK.” She felt her tears coming, her eyes notably blinking more frequently.

“Why can’t you?”

“You wouldn’t understand.” Anne said, “I’m not even gonna say it because you’ll think I’m crazy.”

“Well, I’m a psychiatrist.” He revealed and something in his eyes sparked, “I’ve seen my fair share of crazy.”

She shook her head in discouragement, “Not like this. Not like mine.”

“Entertain me.”

Anne glued her mouth shut.

She didn’t know how long the time past, glancing over her shoulder to look at the clock that hung facing him. The clock was deliberately positioned in such way that the client could forget the concept of time while they were in a ‘safe zone’ and therapist could covertly glance up at the time to keep track of his next appointment without making the client feel rushed or pressured. It was their job to manage the time and end the session appropriately.

“Is something holding you back?” He asked, ever so patiently, “If you could afford to go back, will you?”

“Of course I’ll go back if I could afford to, but I can’t.”

“What is it that you cannot afford?”

She tried to look everywhere but him, his eyes following her movements like a hawk scanning its prey on the ground before swooping down to hook its prey in its sharp beak. Anne wished she could control the seeping nervousness that filled the room, she knew he could feel it because every twitch she made, small smile would form on his lips. He thrived in fear; it was why he did what he did.

Every second was agonisingly slow, much slower than the six months she spent on the street.

Her shoulders relaxed notably as he wrapped up the session.

I bought insurance for my truck. after 3 months of paying my agent i noticed that my financing bank had added 1300 dollars to my loan as a collateral insurance because they did not have proof of my insurance. My parents have triple A auto insurance and I have recently gotten my drivers license. I have tried to research the requirements for insurance by law on the California DMV website and the most concrete statement I found was some numbers that cover various damages and injuries (DMV website is not working properly so I cannot look it up). My parents insurance obviously covers the basic and more. However, my parents policy states that Any relative that has consent of the owner to use the insured vehicle is covered by this policy - These are not the exact words as I don't have the policy on me, but it is pretty damn close. In the definitions portion of the policy, it states a relative as anyone related by blood, and some other stuff. I am my parents son so I am obviously related by blood, thus their policy coverage extends on to me when they give me permission to use their vehicle. I did not find ANY California laws that required me to be on the policy. i only found information that said I only need that minimum coverage which my parents policy does provide. We did contact triple A about this and they did not give us a reasonable answer. All they said was that they WANT my parents to add me because THOSE ARE THE RULES. Seems like they just want more money in their pockets. Can someone give some advice? Thanks.""

I was in a car accident when a girl blew a red light and smashed into my side. $10,000 in auto damages that was fixed rights away. (btw she admitted fault to police so im 0% at fault legally) I went to emergency room for precautionary reasons. That cost $1450. Then little by little the pain started to kick in. I had neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain and terrible pain in my knee. I had MRI on back, knee and neck because those were the worst. That total was about $1800. I was told by the doctor that the mri on my back said I have two herniated disks and I should do therapy. I listened to him and went four times per week for four months. The Mri on my neck came back good. But my knee showed a tear in mcl. I had surgery on that and had to see the surgeon in his office twice plus hospital bills which equals a bill of $14,500. I then needed 2 months of therapy on my knee. Also all the pain meds ive been taking through out the whole process is around $600. I had a ekg for my nerves to test if they were good and that cost $800. So after doing my research I find websites that say the settlement amount s should be all bills multiplied by 3 depending on the persons insurance carrier and coverage. Well this person has $200,000/$200,000. So far all my bills have been paid through my insurance. When I do the math for what all the bills are is comes to roughly $28350. I didn't include the four days per week for therapy and seeing the doctors. That has to be a big chunk also. My lawyer called me and said he was made an offer of $42,000. He gets a 1/3 of that. I think they low balled me soooo bad on this. If i use the X3 multiplier method then it should have been somewhere around $85,000 offer. Remember I didn't even include all the visits to the therapy. Is this a good offer or should I decline and wait for second offer? My lawyer thinks we should wait it out because he has such a big insurance policy that we can get much more especially since that was our first offer.""

I have had prenatal checkups and bloodwork and stuff done, but my mother-in-law in paying out of her pocket for everything. Let me make a very long story short and get right to the questions. I have moved across the United States by myself at the age of 20 with no insurance covered by my parents, nor will they ever if they could. I had a retinal detachment in my left eye. Paid out of pocket for an eye doctor appointment, he freaked out and told me to go straight to the emergency room for emergency surgery since my entire retina was detached. After my surgery, half unconscious too, a social worker got assigned to me because I was under 21 and legally dependent on the state. So the state paid for my surgery. I had a 2nd one too because the first failed. During my 2nd surgery I had cataracts in my eye so they removed the natural lens. And they never replaced the natural lens since they feared the retina may detach again like the first time. But it stay together and I turned 21. So therefore, legally independent by the state. My check up appointment was after my birthday which the front desk of the eye section declared I must pay $80 for every check up visit, which they wanted me to come in every other week. And if I did not pay, I could not go in. Due to my 6 months of surgeries and recover time I had no money, and was not working. I live with my in-laws, and they were taking care of me, but they are certainly not going to pay my medical bills. So here I am now, age 22 and I have been working for about a year. My job does not offer health insurance until you worked for a year, and even then, there is a certain month you can sign up. I have been walking around for over a year without a natural lens, or ANY lens in my left eye. This is in no way like being blind. My doctor had told me that if I got my license and drove, if ever in an accident, I would get in serious trouble because you are not supposed to drive this way. Not that I do, I cannot see correctly so it is wicked dangerous. Having no lens in one eyes messes with your other eye. Hard to explain unless you have literally had this situation before. Sunlight glares into my bad eye, then into my good eye. Same with darkness or bright lights in general. I am actually very blind at night because of this. This is literally ruining my life. I have no money to pay for insurance, or the surgery which can be easily be 10,000 dollars. Is this legal for a county hospital to do? I have never heard of anyone in my situation. Even the thousands of times I have googled and searched. Never heard of anyone in my shoes. What are my rights here? Is there some way I can fight this? Where is my justice? This is holding me back so badly in life. Please someone with real help and not a crappy site they copy and pasted, help! I need some real human help!!""

Need advice on qualifying for subsidized health insurance?

I'm an older full-time college student and my husband works full-time at Walmart. In the past three years, I've been through 4 cancer related surgeries, which were paid for by the breast/cervical cancer Medicaid program. Unfortunately, follow up care and monitoring aren't covered and I was dropped from Medicaid. I'm now on my husband's health insurance, which is basically worthless because our income is under $20,000/yr and the policy has a $4500 deductible plus 20% after. I haven't seen my oncologist for over a year because we can't afford the expensive scans, biopsies, and lab work associated with cancer follow-up with a deductible that high. I thought my situation would change in 2014 with Obamacare. I recently learned from the healthcare.gov website calculator that our income is low enough to qualify for expanded Medicaid (which our state decided not to expand), but I don't qualify for the health insurance subsidies I desperately need because the outrageous deductible health insurance from my husband's job covers spouses. How can a couple with an income so low they would qualify for expanded Medicaid be ineligible for subsidies? I am completely devastated over this and I don't know what to do. Not being able to afford cancer follow up care is putting my life in danger. Even if my husband's employer (Walmart) quit covering the spouses of full-time employees, I think that would only apply to new hires because of the grandfather clause. If getting subsidies was based on income alone the way it should be instead of access to employer provided coverage, I would qualify for a zero deductible policy and $3 co-pays with a monthly premium of around $60. I could then afford the expensive health care I need. We live in a college town so if my husband got a different job, he'd make even less than he does now and we would probably end up homeless. If my husband transfers and we move to a state that's expanding Medicaid, I'll have to quit school and get rid of my German Shepherd and Siberian Husky since it's almost impossible to find a landlord that allows them. We thought another option might be to get a divorce on paper and co-habitate until our situation changes (completing my degree and getting a good job so I can afford the deductible), then re-marry. When I asked about that, someone actually accused me of wanting to commit fraud! How can anyone think of something like fraud when a situation is endangering someone's life? I am desperate to somehow qualify for health insurance subsidies without lying, which could get us in trouble. Any ideas?""
