"We are the ones who guard the power. We are the middle, the beginning, and the end." - The Daughter, from the mural (Star Wars Rebels)
I've watched the season finale of Ahsoka three times now (1st was by myself, 2nd time was with my son, and the 3rd time was with my Mum). A certain scene near the end of the episode - after a realization of what it was - made me think back to two certain special episodes: one from The Clone Wars and one from Rebels. This idea came to me on Sunday (October 8) night, so I quickly sketched out The Daughter and Morai, then coloured it in on October 9 (Monday). I always found the "Mortis gods" or "The Ones" rather interesting. I've always liked characters that have a small or short appearance, yet their character is important. The Daughter is so tall in her human form: 2.13 meters (or 6'9")!
I hope everybody likes this. Please let me know if you do Star Wars fan art (or anything sci-fi or from Dragon Age or Naruto). I'd love to see your work! Thank you to everybody who supports my art. You truly mean a lot to me. It is what keeps me going as an artist.
This was drawn with my usual mediums: Sakura Pigma Micron pens, then coloured in with a mix of Copic Markers and Ohuhu Markers. The background is acrylic paint on black posterboard. I actually cut out The Daughter & Morai from the paper I drew them on, then glued it to the painted posterboard. An interesting way to do mixed mediums, yes? The gold paint is actually metallic & shiny in real life, but sadly scanners kill colours and metallics. (Well darn, scanners sometimes kills the line art.) The actual art piece is 11.25" x 14".
I have another Ahsoka series fan art that I created last week. I will share it next week. I had posted it on my Instagram, but Insta is horrible to so many artists (especially if you do traditional art), because the Algorithim of Doom buries your work so deep that nobody sees it. My art basically fails on Insta. So I believe that from now on, I'll only submit my artwork here on Tumblr.

More traditional experimental stuff! I got a new sketchbook as I finished the last one (maybe I should do a video tour of it?). The new one isnt quite the texture I like for just sketching, but it is very nice for ink and markers and I happened to purchase a few more water based markers the other day from my fave art store. I know its probably seems obvious but I found that copics are not the best for this paper but the water soluble markers from faber castelle and tombow are very nice to work with. I may get more in the future.
I think would I would like to try next is some oil pastel pencils? Im curious about them though I should also just use up my colored pencils. Either way Im having fun! Its nice to just...make a thing and say 'thats good enough' and move on while thinking of new ways to keep pushing it. I broke in that big sketchbook too so no more 'oh no its too nice to make art in' for me!

📻🎶 H/D WIRELESS 2023 - WEEKLY WRAP-UP #3
The third week of posting has come to an end! Enjoy catching up with this week's selection of wonderful works.
There's a work for everyone in this fest (and if you haven't found what you're looking for yet, we're far from done with posting).
As always you can listen to the prompted songs for the works we post on two playlists:
Click here for Spotify (many thanks to @evaeleanor for helping us out there) ❤️
And here for the YouTube playlist.
Please enjoy this week’s entries below the cut:
🎶 H/D Wireless Art 🎶
📻 Your Heart's a Mess [G, Pencil & Copic markers]
🎵 Song Prompt: 'Hearts A Mess' by 'Gotye' 🎵 Summary: Hogwarts eighth year. Malfoy, visibly scarred (from Sectumsempra? from the war? from his treatment by the Ministry?) and visibly heavy-hearted (from regret? from his father's imprisonment? from how the other students torment him?) has driven Harry to distraction. It's 6th year all over again: he was rapidly becoming obsessed with Draco Malfoy. How he wishes the feeling was mutual.
🎶 H/D Wireless Fic and Art 🎶
📻 Waking Up Slow [E, 21,886, Digital Art]
🎵 Song Prompt: 'The Christmas Song' by 'The Raveonettes' 🎵 Summary: 'Twas the night before Christmas, although it’s July, Draco’s a shopkeeper, no-one knows why, There’s hiking and witch caves, freak snowfalls and more, Bad Christmas jumpers, nosy neighbours galore, Narcissa’s here too, but… something’s amiss, And what’s in those chocolates that’s making them kiss?
🎶 H/D Wireless Fic 🎶
📻 Burst of Love [E, 3,805]
🎵 Song Prompt: Jealous by Nick Jonas 🎵 Summary: The year after the War is both the worst and best one in Harry and Draco's lives. Draco somehow becomes one of the most requested influencer on Instagram, Harry is finally free and discovers he has quite...a passion inside himself. We all know how this is going to end.
📻 Rich Friend [E, 1,130]
🎵 Song Prompt: Rich Friends by Portugal. The Man 🎵 Summary: As far as Harry can tell, Draco Malfoy is still rich as hell. He’s just not a wizard anymore. Featuring: Draco Malfoy trying to make it as a Muggle pop star, Harry Potter as our confused and horny hero, bad driving, good music, and the mysterious magic of falling for someone.
📻 Seven Days, Seven Memories [E, 25,668]
🎵 Song Prompt: Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want by The Smiths 🎵 Summary: In a universe somewhere, deep down in the Department of Mysteries, behind Door 13, Unspeakable Draco Malfoy, can be usually found. Except Malfoy is nowhere to be found when Harry goes looking for him. What he finds instead is a Pensieve and a box full of memories
📻 so scarlet it was [E, 19,932]
🎵 Song Prompt: Maroon - Taylor Swift 🎵 Summary: Draco’s back for his Eighth Year as part of his parole. He’s doing his best not to annoy any war heroes and avoid Harry Potter as if his life depends on it. Too bad Harry has other ideas.
📻 A Pureblood's Guide to Driving and Apostasy [E, 9,218]
🎵 Song Prompt: I'm On Fire by Bruce Springsteen 🎵 Summary: Draco Malfoy should be happy - he's engaged to a suitable young lady, chosen by his father, and on the way to restoring the family name. Except he isn't happy at all. That is, until Pansy (or is it fate?) brings him to a magical garage where his whole worldview is set on fire.
📻 Snitches & Sitches [T, 4,565]
🎵 Song Prompt: 'Once Upon a December' by 'Liz Callaway' 🎵 Summary: After a Quidditch accident, Harry's life turns upside down when he suffers a case of retrograde amnesia. Surrounded by people and places he should remember, Harry must cope with his slow recovery, all the while feeling like there's something very familiar about the blond with gray eyes who keeps wistfully staring at him.
📻 Can't Get You Out of My Head [E, 26,343]
🎵 Song Prompt: Can't Get You Out of My Head by Kylie Minogue 🎵 Summary: Draco was quite fine with his own company, thank you very much. So, when a potions’ accident left him unable to rid his head of Harry Potter’s infernal internal monologue, Draco was less than thrilled. He was, however, an internationally educated Potioneer; he could find an antidote without having to admit to Potter the access he’d had to his thoughts…actions…personal life…personal time…right?
📻 Sod Off Potter [T, 1,787]
🎵 Song Prompt: Sod Off Potter by Rattlebones 🎵 Summary: So sod off Potter Will you say what you want? Sod off Potter Will you say what you want is me? Potter please ↳ Sod Off Potter - Rattlebones Draco regretted the decision to return to Hogwarts after the war. Why couldn't bloody Potter just leave him alone? It wouldn't be so bad if Draco hadn't been harboring a secret crush on Harry for years.
🎶 H/D Wireless Podfic 🎶
📻 [Podfic] You Are Not Alone [, 1:49:56]
🖋️ Original author: Juh_Nunes 🎵 Song Prompt: Sorry - Halsey 🎵 Summary: Orginal Summary: Draco dreaded going back to Hogwarts after the war. He was sure this would be his worst year yet: the school hated him, the Slytherins have abandoned him, and his dorm was overrun with Gyffindors. There was no way anything good could come out of this mess, right?

When I was 13 I found out about Copic Markers on deviantart, which, according to the numerous tutorials on how to use them, were a magic medium that made everything look very pro. However, I couldn't afford them. Hammering the belief in my head that "A marker is a marker, how different could they be? There has to be a cheap brand out there that is just as good", I started buying all of the cheap felt tip pens that I could get my hands on to test the different brands. I also asked for pens and markers for every birthday and holiday with no regards on how cheap the brand, and then proceeded to murder the hell out of my sketchbooks by trying to blend with them like you would with a Copic.
I stopped using markers around age 16, much more enticed by coloring pencils and oil pastels, but because I do not throw away things that still work, yet they were too worn down to be donated, the sharpie collection stayed in a box to be sparsingly used over the years. I have carried them through the 7 different houses I lived in since then, checking before each time moving out if any of them had gone dry then packing them up.
Recently while doing a big autumn cleaning in my flat I got angry at those. How long was I going to have this box taking space in my room despite only being used once a year? I grabbed my sketcbook and decided that since I can't throw them out until they're dry, I'd draw with them until they did. So I spent a whole night just drawing random shit with them.
Turns out they have more in their belly than I excpected them too. Some of them have been half-dry for, at this point, almost 15 years, and they are somehow still kicking (or at least, kicking enough so I can shade with them). One night was definitely not enough to finish all of these bad boys. I managed to finish and throw out less than 10% of the collection, but in the process I rediscovered ways to have fun with sharpie and re-cement them as a medium that I can sometime use in my sketchbooks.

Surprise, I had another one of these! Jasper has joined the lineup!
Also took some WIP photos while working on this portrait, so if you're curious about the process, look under the cut. 👇
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I start with a faint pencil sketch (H and HB pencils) and then move on to simple inks with a .1 fineliner. Erase the pencil lines, and boom, we got some nice crisp ink to work with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For colours, I first lay down some simple colour areas with Copics. I've found that having this foundation helps me achieve deeper colours than if I used coloured pencils alone! (Plus it's easier on my hands.) Then the shading gets added in with the aforementioned coloured pencils. The nice thing about midtone paper is that you can even brighten some areas with light pigments to really make the image pop, like on the white scarf and bright gold highlights on the hair!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Moving on to final adjustments: I like going over the lineart one more time with coloured fineliners to really pull things together (and since I like having a more line-heavy cartoony style). Then I add in some white highlights with my beloved Posca marker. It's really useful for adding things like snow, eye shines and a bit of gloss on anything else that needs to look smooth and sparkly.
Tumblr media
Give it a clean scan if you want to be extra fancy and you're done! 👍

Have you ever drawn traditionally? Say, with pencil?
Oh yeah, of course! That's where I started actually. I didn't get into digital drawing/art until college, and even then I mostly drew traditionally. Ironically, I was slow, and even at a point stubbornly refused to do digital art for a while. But since it became more accessible and I found that it fit will with my interest in comics and animation, digital ended up becoming my main medium!
Old art incoming!
I used mostly pens and pencils, and stuck largely with black and white, and very little color. Below are some of the oldest pieces I could find at the moment. They're from 2008/2009, when I was 16-17 years old. One is a page from an old comic that I did, and another is the rare opportunity that I had to work with copic markers
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(these can still be found on my old deviantart (@/jadethestone) account haha)
I also did Inktober for a few years. For 2017 I used just ink pens, for 2018 I created India Ink portraits, and for 2019 I used some brush-tip ink-markers which were fun and colorful (all can be found on my instagram (@/renaissancef0x) if you dig far enough)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I actually really like working with India Ink and doing portraits. I even liked combining it with a bit of watercolor for a splash of color! These are my more "recent" pieces from around 2019. The second one was part of a series that was featured in a couple small galleries in Tokyo for a short time
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The main reason why I don't do traditional much anymore is because it takes up physical space and materials are more expensive. Also, I became more known online for my comics and such, so that's what I started leaning towards. When I started opening up commissions, I even offered traditional portraits, but no one wanted any, so I took them off this year.
It would be nice to have more opportunities to do/show off my traditional art skills, but I'm very focused on comics and animation now and I work better digitally with them

That doesn't sound bad. That's only disappointing if it disappoints you. What kind of stuff do you tend to sketch if I may ask? Also might've been low key seeing if you play video games that I could invite you to play.
Ah, you know, thank you for this. 🥹 they are my hobbies, and I need to learn not to minimize them or apologize for liking them. (Old habits, it comes with growing up the way I did and being told that liking comic books and Star Wars and "living in a fantasy world" was making me weak) But yeah I mean. It's not disappointing to like reading, or art, or video games, nor does it make someone a loser.
(I need to remember that)
I love to draw all kinds of things, I have a sketchpad filled with stuff from reference/still life, I like practicing drawing flowers, I actually sometimes like drawing smut/ shibari and if I ever actually posted that online I'd tag the models I referenced... not even in a horny way but there's something wonderful I find in shibari or fetish stuff artists that they challenge you, in drawing in a pen and ink medium, to workshop how you adapt poses, musculature, lighting, all that stuff.
And I have a lot of superheroes.
When I was a kid, all the way up to about 17, I wanted to be a graphic novelist, make my own comics that were like just my teenaged brain firing off ideas I'd sponged up from a lot of X-Men and a LOT of Toonami. I didnt go on to become a comics artist, in fact, due to being discouraged by my dad and others (...but, well, my dad) I sort of came to the conclusion it was childish ("cute lil cartoons," they were derisively called) and let my gift atrophy. I drew nothing.
So in coming back to it, slowly over the last... ten years? Ive gotten back in to art.
It's not the same as it was. Sadly, it can't be, that fire I had when I was young was well. Stomped out.
So I cant make panels, and I struggle with transition and movement from one panel to the next to make a story flow, and sometimes it feels like I draw OTHER people's heroes like Spider-Man like I'm a fucking cover band at a dive bar playing KISS.
But I've still worked on it, and grown a lot over those last ten years, and found a peace in it that yeah, idk, maybe it isnt what I wanted to be when I was young but it's still art, dammit.
So yeah, sorry. Im wordy and it was complicated to answer but you kind of put a dime in and got me talking about it so. My sketchbook has lots of microliner ink drawing, some flowers and still life, some smut, some X-Men cover band stuff, just stuff I want to challenge myself to draw.
I'm also determined to experiment more with color like my copic markers this year so.
Video games I play are really a lot of single player open world stuff, Im currently grinding on um.
...fallout4 OKAY DONT JUDGE ME, I am of the specific brand of gamer that finds some peace and comfort in going back to Skyrim and Fallout from time to time...
I would love to get in to games with other people but I wouldnt know where to start, or what to pick up, frankly, but that is a kind offer and one I'd be interested in maybe perhaps at some point
I take it back... I did have a coop farm in Stardew Valley I played sorta multiplayer with my friend from CO but... our friendship sort of died off and we dont Stardew together anymore... fuck Im sad now.
Sincerely, thank you for the asks and the kindness and if you made it through reading ALL of that shit you are a fucking G and I respect and love you so much

Completed commission for @lurkerdelima of their druid boyfriend OCs, Aneirin and Rylan! I heard ‘Order of the Sunflower’ and went h o r d into the decorative motif lol. (Fun fact, last day of working on this I realized I was wearing a t-shirt with sunflowers as a repeating print on it. Image ref: EQUIPPED.)
Micron liner pens and Copic art markers on marker paper, 9 x 12 in.
I worked my bones off on all the little details for this one so I am including some close-ups under the cut and little details! Enjoy! ☺️
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The daisy flowers in their hair is for midsummer: Aneirin keeps it simple while I gave Rylan a proper daisy-chain crown.
Robes were described as more typically darker colors, hooded, with long sleeves—but I really loved the summer/midsummer theme, so I gave them lighter outfits in accordance with the season. There are actually pants under there, too, and the sleeves are pushed back and bound with ribbon banding to stay higher on the arm, as otherwise they would be quite large and hang down to the wrist. My thought is, gotta keep that fabric under control when you’re out collecting flowers!
Tumblr media
(I used sooo much tracing paper working out outfit layering and labored over how to convey the bunched fabric to such an extent, lol.)
The bunny you see above and the pendant necklace below are treasured childhood belongings of Aneirin and Rylan, respectively—at some point, they exchange these as gifts, and I found that too cute not to include, so they’re both showing off the other’s token.
Tumblr media
I also poked around a lot to find nice little trim/embroidery details for each garment. I toyed with like fifteen border stitch designs before choosing the interlocking geometric one you see here; the full version would have this around the skirt of the underrobe as well. The green-and-gold trim for the open-front tunic vests is simpler, just sort of a three-pip design to mimic leaf or petal shapes. But I couldn’t resist going properly in on the sunflowers motif for the hanging waist wrap, clearly… had to get full and partial stylized sunflower designs in there, plus a series of leaf appliqués up the side and an array of sunflower seeds at the bottom! 😅 This is what happens when I am commissioned for druids whose order happens to feature my favorite flower.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Final sunflower details: Rylan is wearing a wicker horn-o’-plenty/cornucopia that is hung like a satchel via attached shoulder strap. In my head, he uses this to collect sunflower stems for midsummer celebrations. He’s tucked some daisies in there too because why not, and has Aneirin’s gifted bunny sitting atop the bunch as a helpful flower-gathering companion.
Tumblr media
Aneirin is described as a little more reserved—but also a very Long and Slender boy, so for him instead I gave him a more elaborately decorated waist belt. The sunflower brooches here were a BITCH to try and detail with brush-tip markers, but I think in the end it’s a pretty good hit for the glazed enamel vibe I was going for! He’s got a beaded cord hanging over the waist wrap too (and a stitched-on stylized sun on the cinch) because I love unnecessary detail.
Tumblr media
Anyway…
I had a lot of indulgence with this art overall, and hopefully it comes across well. Shout-out again to Lurker for commissioning me, and if you want to know more about Aneirin and Rylan as OCs, go follow @lurkerdelima ! 😄

Hi Paper! You've been making comics for a long time so do you have any tips on what paper to use? :0 I'm beginning a comic soon and I plan to use microns and alcohol markers with gray tones (Also I'm a Finn too, so it's a bonus if it can be found in like Suomalainen Kirjakauppa or some other local store)
Oh, boy!
I think the best thing to do would be try out different papers untill you find one that you like. That's how I did it.
Not that I want to deny you my wisdom or anything, it's just that my chosen paper is cheap, legitimately sucks at the job it claims to be for, and is getting harder and harder to find.
Tumblr media
This is the paper I use for comics. You can see the cover says it's "primarily suited for watercolors", but that is a lie. This stuff sucks donkey arse with watercolors, it crinkles up if someone thinks about watercolors while in the same room, and the colors will turn out washed out and horrible. This paper sucks out any and all joy you might have for watercolors.
It is, however, nice and smooth, works nice with pencils and actually likes markers. Even Copics don't bleed through too bad! The absolute best thing about it is that since it pretends to be watercolor paper, it's glued to the pad by two edges instead of just one, so it stays still nice and firm while you draw on it. No accidentally bent corners while you work!
The downside is that since it's cheap arse brand and actively works even worse with watercolors than actual tissue paper despite the cover claiming to be "suitable", no self-respecting art store is ever going to stock it, and I can't justify asking them to. You can't even buy them online anywhere.
The only places I've seen them being sold at are Tuurin kyläkauppa and Löytötex, so, good luck in living nearby/having one of those (I used to buy them at Hong Kong before they rebranded as Rusta, but they stopped carrying them with the rebrandening so screw me I guess since that was the only store in my home town)
So, honestly my recommendation is to just try out bunch of different things untill you find one you like.
... And when you do find one you like, maybe tell me, because I'd be very interested in finding an alternative that I could actually get my hands on because, haha, I'm screwed.
Good luck for your comic, though!

I totally understand if not, but I just found your blog and will begin reading your comic soon. But I've noticed you've got a thing for leather jacket. Any chance you could draw Tikal in one please? I love her and like Vanilla there isn't much content of her and it's such a shame. I hope you don't mind me reaching out and thanks for all your work!
Tumblr media
Why yes I can, anon
Thanks for the anon message, and enjoy this tikal! It was nice to have a reason to dust off my copic markers. And please don't hesitate to message me what you think of the comic if you check it out!

Sketchbook and You
If you’ve been following me for a bit (or you take a read through the descriptions over on my Art Blog), you’ve probably noticed the name of a few non-standard art programs. This is about one of them!
Things I want to get out of the way before the break:
No, I’m not here to sell you on the program. I’ll simply tell you what I like/dislike from my years of using it.
Yes, I’ll help you with some stuff that might come in handy if you decide to take the plunge.
And now… Here's a long-time user’s perspective on Sketchbook.
So! Sketchbook… it's been around for a while. I bought my 1st copy way back in the day for my (at the time) brand new 2nd Gen iPod Touch! It was great for doing quick sketches on the go. The thing I liked about it over the other popular paint program – Colors! - was the Pencil brush. Not surprising that a guy who primarily draws on paper would go for the brush most like the main tool he uses but hey? I’m basic like that.
For me, a solid feeling pencil was the difference between me drawing on my iPod or sticking to my physical notepad.
Back then, it was still owned by AutoDesk and went by SketchBook Express, SketchBook Mobile Express and SketchBook Pro. Each had their own quirks with the Express series being their “Free" versions. Over on the desktop side, they had things like the Copic Edition – a free program that allowed you to try use the official Copic marker colors in your pics. That would get walked over to SketchBook Pro later on and remain 'till the Sketchbook crew split off from AutoDesk in June of 2021.
Alrighty… With all of that history out of the way, To the Point!
Yes, I enjoy using Sketchbook. It’s the way I draw on my devices when I'm not using a mouse in Illustrator or doing basic stuff in Fireworks. It's super simple and good for what I need. No triple deep menus of things it can do that you need proper classes to learn to take full advantage of. Since it’s always had a mobile version (maybe that was it’s original platform), the menus are simple and easy to hide. You can import, export and build your own brushes from scratch. In the version that released closest to this writing (the October 2022 release), they even added something close to what was lost during their split from AutoDesk – a really neat color feature. Although it (currently) lacks the Copics from before, it makes up for that in both the ability to select colors and import, export and build whole color books.
Does this mean I’m recommending it? Not really.
I dig it, sure… but those used to neat things like the ability to save out timelapse videos from your desktop files or native 3D models or even just being able to add text will find it lacking. The formats it uses – TIFFs and PSDs - are fine for some. I personally like to work in PNG so I have to be careful to save out my layers individually or the whole thing will be flattened. Same goes with saving things in general. Like with any program, you need to be sure you’re saving things in the right file. I’ve noticed my copies of SB tend to remember the last file name used, auto filling the field. If I’m going too fast, I face a real risk saving over an older project.
The only thing I can recommend is to try before you buy.
How does one do that when the program is a one-time-fee dealie? Well… before the split, AutoDesk made the last version of SBPro free for everyone. I don’t normally do this ‘cause it’s a bit of a dick move and links will change as time goes one but I’ll drop a link to it and the archived page for the Much older Copic Edition in the next bit. Just understand that, for as good as Sketchbook is and for as long as it has been around, it’s kind of starting from scratch again with their newfound independence.
That’s about all I have to say about the subject. All in all, I enjoy using Sketchbook and have found it worth the price over the years. If You want to give the program the best shot it can, here’s some links that might help you along the way:
Sketchbook – The main site. Gets you the latest versions and a little more.
Extras Page – Like the name suggests, this has extras. Stuff like downloadable brush sets and some color books.
SketchBook Pro Free Brush Mega Set – Thanks to the hard work of a redditor, this is the best way to get damn near every free brush set that was offered by AutoDesk over the years.
AutoDesk SketchBook ver 8.7.1 – A link to the last edition they released before the split. It is free and comes with access to all the stuff the old Pro version did (Copics, perspective grids, other non-standard stuff I can’t remember). You can still import/export/build brushes with this.
SketchBook Copic Edition – What it says on the tin. This old version allows you the (at the time) new feature of the official Copic color book… and not much else if I remember right. It predates a lot of improvements. I don’t even remember if you could import brushes. It’s the least sketchy way to try out the basics of Sketchbook before you decide on jumping in completely.
If this helped you make a decision, I’m both shocked and amazed. Personally, I’d give one of the older copies a shot if they’ll run on your gear (That Copic one is OLD). Between the simple interface that knows when to get out of the way to the newer features they Just introduced, I think it’s worth it if only to try it.

Top 5 art supplies?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I LOVE TALKING ART SUPPLIES...!!
I especially have been excited the last few months that I've found my sort of SET of supplies I love using together now??
The Pilot Color-Eno Pencils - My favorite supply to sketch with. The four colors I use primarily erase the cleanest. They don't smudge like regular graphite, and they also don't muddy up my alcohol markers, and even melt a bit when colored over for easier cover up -CHEF KISS- SO GOOD.
The Uni Emott Pencils - These are a new find and favorite of mine! They're richer colors of the Color-Eno, are biggest size, but the draw back is they stain the paper a bit more and are harder to erase if you're not light handed. But I really love the little stand, and the way the pencils feel in my hand.
The Uni Emott Pens - BRO I LOVE... these bitches. I use them for colored lineart, and they're super nice. They do leave a dot where you start or stop. They're SO NICE. They're waterproof and play nice with alcohol markers, they just kinda lose crispness, but they don't bleed or anything.
Alcohol Markers - I use a LOT of different brand of alcohol markers. I use Copics primarily for their lighter color tones, as well as I REALLY love the fact you can refill them easily. It's definitely cost effective in the long run. I also use some Prismacolor markers I've had since HIGHSCHOOL that still work? And newly found Tombow ABT alcohol markers, but those don't have as much INK in them and I've dried a few out already. They're odd. Casual work they're good, but not like large spots in illustrations I'm finding.
The Uni Pin Pens - These pens are my new favorites too, I found these through a waterproof sample pack of pens, and they're perfect for my work. There's no start and stop to the line, it's very much a SINGLE size line with little to no variation. They're waterproof and alcohol marker friendly, and they have quite the ink reservoir on them I've noticed with ho long I've had this one so far!
And most of those I've gotten or you can get on sites like jetpens.com or something - and they're like in sets or individual and JUST MAN SO GOOD?? I've really loved the streamline process of work I've been putting out this year using these things :0

I think I have liked art since I was a kid, I just didn’t know it until I was in high school. My favorite subjects in high school were art and history and I got good grades in those classes. A lot of times during lectures I would scribble in my notebooks. That’s how much I liked art. I didn’t really pursue art until after college where I majored in art.
My college degree was B.A. in fine art option graphic design. I tried to get jobs in art galleries, graphic design firms and no luck. So I started to pursue animation after watching Disney’s The Lion King (the cartoon feature). I was watching behind- the- scenes of the movie and was inspired by how the artists working on the movie that went to Africa to draw actual lions. I think after The Lion King, the economy went downhill so studios are not able to travel anymore except from state to state.
Watching animated features and TV cartoons made me think that I don’t need to learn the fundamentals of drawing, because everything was simplified in the features and TV cartoons. I had that thinking until I joined Women In Animation and met some professional animators. After joining Women In Animation I also found out about The Animation Guild where they have classes for animators that are also open to those that want to pursue animation. After finding out about The Animation Guild, I started to take figure drawing and animation classes. From figure drawing classes, I learned about human anatomy and gestures. From animation classes, I learned about key frames and inbetweens.
Probably from one or two of the animators at WIA or the guild, I learned about The Drawing Club a place where artists of all levels can go to draw models and practice life drawing. I did all that until 2014 when I had to move back to Taiwan and take care of my mom. In Taiwan, I tried to find animation organizations like WIA, but no luck so I made my own animated short using Muji notebooks where their pages are blank and kind of transparent. Then after 5 years living in Taiwan, an eye doctor said that my eyes are deteriorating, so I slowly move from digital drawing to traditional drawing and painting. I discovered colored pencils from a illustration class that was drawing with colored pencils and Copic markers from a Copic marker class. After drawing with colored pencils and Copic markers for a while and watching art youtubers, I discovered an art Youtuber named Ten Hundred.
Ten Hundred was painting his own cartoon characters with acrylics. Ten Hundred opened my eyes with his painting technique so I started to study his paintings and follow him on social media. Now I want to see if I can develop a style similar to Ten Hundred. Ten Hundred’s characters are full of awesome details. Details I never thought of. I especially like it how Ten Hundred paint smoothly when other acrylic painters paint with textures. Ten Hundred was outstanding to me.

Art Final Project
Art Title: Things left behind
Tumblr media
The premise: When I was thinking about what I wanted to do for this piece I immediately thought of looking through some of my old art for inspiration. However, once I started looking through my sketchbooks, I knew that instead of starting a new project, I should try to finish the old ones that I found. I wanted to piece each little sketch together to create something sort of childlike and just an explosion of color. When I was younger, I would become hyper focused on one activity until I exhausted all methods of doing it, and then moved on. In my art, this sort of behavior pushed me to try a lot of different mediums in order to configure what worked best for me. When I was younger it was of course classic crayons, then colored pencils, then I really loved spreading pastels around and finding the perfect blend of color, and then buying an extensive number of Copic markers and playing around with a more graffiti like style. In this piece, I decided to combine unfinished art from each of these eras into one and fill the empty space with my signature that is evident of each era. In preschool, I was obsessed with the classic heart, smiley face, and star combo. In third grade I began learning cursive and would only write in it whenever I could, so I wanted to use that for the colored pencil portion. For the pastel portion I wanted to make sure my signature could barely be seen through the colors since I used to love the feeling of spreading the pastel powder all over a page. Finally, I ended my signatures with my middle school medium of only using markers. This was a super fun one for me to make, and it was refreshing to make something messy and all over the place, and not worry about balance or coherence.

Another art supply question! Your art inspired me to draw in a traditional way and I wanted to try it with Copic but they have so many sets that I’m confused which one to try first since I’ve never used them before. Do you have any advices?? Thank you!!!
Oh wow, I'm glad it did, anon! Drawing with markers is a very satisfying process, I hope you'll enjoy it 💙
I never bought Copics in sets, normally I just buy a bunch of colors I like individually, so I can't recommend any set in particular. But I can give some tips I use myself when picking colors to buy, maybe they'll be of some use for you too!
💠 Study your art first, what do you like to draw the most and what color palette is your favorite? For example, I draw people a lot, so for me the most needed colors are shades of beiges and browns (Earth tones or E in Copic color system) + some fitting pinks and oranges (R & YR) for adding blushes and highlights. My favorite color is blue, so I also have A LOT of different blues and cyans (B and BG). Also, after getting into Destiny, I found myself in a constant need of different grayish shades for drawing metal surfaces. Simple grays almost never look good in colored pictures imo, so for that purpose I try to look for desaturated browns, purples, blues, etc.
In short, the clearer idea you have of what you're going to draw with markers, the easier it will be to pick the best set for that.
💠 Most Copic markers I have layer and shade very well. Like this:

(The darker the color is, the worse it works though)
So you don't always need a separate marker to get a darker tone. But not any paper can endure a lot of layering, so it's better to be careful with that.
💠 Markers can be mixed together to get a new color, but it's nowhere near as good as paints or inks, where you can fill in a whole color wheel with 4 colors. So it's better to get a separate green than to count on mixing yellow and blue for it.
💠 There are some colors which may not look very pretty or useful by themselves, but are super good for shading or mixing - for me it's the light shades of violet and blue-violet. They're good for adding lively looking shadows to almost any color.
💠 It's always important to keep in mind the general color balance of your work and how all colors will look together. You may love some of them separately, but together they may simply not work.
Tumblr media
See how out of place the blue in Set 1 looks, even though it's a pretty color? It's because it's too cool for that palette. Warm blue in Set 2 is a much better fit.
💠 Set of grays is always the safest bet! I think b&w works are actually the best way to try new art supplies, since you don't have to bother about colors and can focus on the supply performance.
💠 Copic sets are rather pricey, if it's not a problem for you, then cool, they are absolutely worth the money! But if it is, it'll probably be better to get some cheaper markers in a big set, to just draw with it for some time and learn which colors you use the most, which you lack, etc. And then buy Copics with all these things in mind so you don't feel like you wasted your money on markers you barely use.
Best of luck! 🌸✨
