Sure lets talk about why I like to affiliate c!Dream with a betta fish.

It's basic. It's basic. It FEELS basic around mermay and bettas are such a widely known fish and they got those beautiful scales and fins and maybe I'm just crazy but it feels like it's a common choice to default to. Idk maybe I'm projecting on that jfkghd but It feels so fitting!!!

They are freshwater fish. Betta fish are naturally found in streams. When the water is low, they flop between puddle to puddle. Persistent little guys. They also have a labyrinth organ which allows them to breathe air in addition to water, for those times when it's very shallow. Something about being so hardy and adaptable feels very much like c!Dream. And idk, I like the idea of him staying near land even in a fish person AU or whatever. It feels more sociable, reminiscent of the pre-war days. Scraping through pebbles and mud vs cruising majestically through the ocean lol

Then the obvious feature that I have already mentioned elsewhere, that they will fight other fish to the death. Most fish consider the size of the other and flee if they are smaller, but not these guys. (and tbf some bettas are more willing to fight than others) They're territorial and maybe don't have the best sense of self preservation in that particular case, but they can hold their own!

That said, it is a common misconception that they will fight every other thing that moves. This is not true. They will typically only fight fish with similarly large/colorful fins because they see it as a threat. They can do just fine in community tanks. They are not as solitary as people some believe; they're not as indiscriminately vicious as some believe. Sounds familiar.

This bit may tie a little more into how I like to spin my mer AUs, but also- betta fish are commercially prioritized to have very large fins. The more natural breeds have much smaller fins, and are less desirable. However, having big fins makes it harder for them to swim, and therefore breathe. Something about appearance and reputation coming at the cost of one's health. Or something about needing to Look a Certain Way to survive, but still with difficulty.

Tank has been set up, leak tested so it's good to go (after I overhauled the layout of my office ... still dealing with the fallout of that though lol) and the piece of jarrah/mirra? wood that my Dad grabbed from the tree he cut down on a farm (noting this specifically because it's actually now illegal to commercially harvest Jarrah in my state - this was on private property so it's legal) has had the absolute crap scrubbed out of it - I mean literally, in the process I found yet another interesting hole in it so that's cool, then high-pressure blasted with water so I am finally ready to think about scaping.

Which apparently means spending longer than I should drawing a plan lol. This piece is super awkward to work with I think - while functionally interesting it has a silhouette that makes me oscillate between 'boring' and 'awkward'. After talking to some artist friends, generally it was agreed I'd need to put more stuff in there to actually make it look better, right now naked glass is super harsh. Problem is, rocks and wood? Well in the aquarium hobby that shit is expensive. We're talking 60 AUD+ for pieces of wood. I mean they are fully cleaned and treated (?) and selected for being interesting, but I have a budget and I'd like to save as much of it as I can for more than just harscape sooooo planning is just the right idea here.

Thinking seiryu stone because I looooove the white veining through it, and then for the branches to break up the shape it's probably going to be spiderwood or something (as much as I love mopani wood I don't think it usually sells branched like this - but I will watch out for it) but the good part is these pieces are all probably going to be on the smaller side since I have my huge hunk of feature wood for free.

I don't know how this piece of wood will interact with inhabitants, I've soaked it for probably a month at this point to get a large amount of the tannins out (and I know it waterlogs, which is great because I won't have to play 'how long will this take to sink') but also to help the looser material come off so all I'm left with now is the hard stuff. It's also now sitting in the sun (and I mean sun - it is going to be 40C today and the next few days so that shit is gonna bake 💀) but prior to that has been sitting in the sun either here or the farm for a total of about idk ... at least a month? Maybe more?

I've struggled to find information on whether Jarrah or Mirra wood is safe beyond one post on a forum where someone-who-knew-someone at a local fish shop had put a piece of this in his store tank and all the fish died. Beyond that? no more context. According to my freshwater ecologist friend I caught up with, she thinks it's probably going to be okay given the amount of time/work put in. I have not done a bleach soak and I don't think I really need to given the amount of time it's been soaking in regular tap water (so already contains chlorine) and sun exposure. There will still probably be tannin leakage into the water but I'm okay with having a mild blackwater tank after seeing one in my LFS, I actually like the slight tannin tint of water and how it makes everything a little 'softer'. But I do ACTUALLY want to be able to see though lmao. I've also seen Jarrah seed pods sold locally specifically for blackwater tank setups so it might be fine?

Either way the plan is going to be: Scape, plant, cycle and then introduction of some cheap shrimp as my poor guinea pigs to see if that wood actually is awful.

Right now I'll just have to painstakingly go through plant choices and placement and making sure it lines up with the planned parameters for the community. I absolutely will take suggestions btw.

i would die for a ropefish.... in the same vein the only monster fish that I've ever put in a heart shaped locket is a birchir. they're even among the smaller monster fish so they're not THAT unattainable, i say, foolishly, longingly (and before anyone gets irresponsible ideas when i say "smaller" i mean 1-2 feet minimum lol, still a monster)

then ever since having my kribs and seeing how cool and intelligent they are, the dream cichlid is a blood parrot AND I KNOW, THEY'RE ASSHOLES, but looooook at itttt.......wawer puppy.... I'd want one in its own big tank as a wet pet

but those are the highly unlikely gets, the top of my realistic wishlist is pretty stereotypical: pea puffers 🥹

they're a perfect mix of attainable + new challenge + omg omg omg cuuuute!!!!!!! it's honestly puffers in general that i desperately wanna try, large puffers are equally adorable to me... if I'm at an aquarium they're my number 2 after arapaima, i could watch a big puffer toot around for hours. they're so visibly intelligent it's amazing!

I think the only time I ever got specific with a fish was picking out one calico-colored goldfish (fancy, also the one that died in three days). For the sake of this new tank, though, I'm willing to be picky. I'm very keen not to fuck this up and god knows I do not need to find homes for a bunch of babies. I'll probably spend, like, fifteen minutes looking at each fish to see if they're male or female while the poor workers keep glancing at me and wondering if they should call the manager to kick me out.

thank you, i'm feeling a lot better today already with how kind everyone's been to me 🤗

i just needed a day to cope for my little betta, it's been almost two years since i adopted her and it just feels far too soon.

i don't think i ever showed her off, i don't have many good pictures of her (bettas never stay still i swear!) but here's the best pic i have of my good girl. she was the most chill fish, not even caring when guppies bounced off of her hehe

her favorite spot... the little printed betta cave at the top of the tank 😊

#i'm gonna miss her though.... she was the third betta i've owned i a think she'll be the last. i'm just not lucky with them i guess. #wasn't even planning on getting her the day i did though. went to the store for fish food and stuff and saw her in a little cup - #- so dirty it was green with algae. i couldn't leave her there. she was a glo-betta and those little guys never got adopted. #hell they've stopped breeding them now. she was one of the last of her kind i guess then. i dunno how healthy they were but she did good. #i wonder if the guppies will miss her. she was the most chill betta. would never get mad or chase them. #.... besides when i first got her and the boys kept trying to flirt with her. thought she was a giant female guppy i guess.
