it is a rainy sunday. we had a glorious last-gasp-of-summer week, 70s and sunny and lovely, and then last night as the sun went down it suddenly got cold and is going to stay that way.

today's my late father's birthday. he'd've been 79 today. farmsister asked the family groupchat if we wanted to do anything special but like, what? no, so we're just having our normal sunday family dinner. she decided to make enchiladas because while the tomatoes are done, there are still tomatillos, so she's roasting those. i decided to thaw a pork butt and i'll make a sort of al pastor kind of pulled pork for the filling, later. but at the moment i'm out in my cabin, which is a disaster area and needs cleaning. but at the moment i'm just listening to the rain on the metal roof, and i have the propane stove on to get it up to room temperature in here, and i'm dying to take a nap but probably won't.

i told myself i could sit for an hour and maybe write. I sorta don't want to write, I sorta want to fuck around and nap, lol. I'm at a bit in Peace-Tied where I'm trying to fold in stuff I wrote ahead that doesn't quite fit now, so that's complicated-- I've been resorting to using two monitors to have the old doc open in a window so I don't have to tab back and forth. But Fit For Thrones is also in an awkward spot where I wrote stuff ahead and like not a lot has changed, but I realized there needed to be a new thread introduced, so I've got to work that in, and I'm realizing a scene I wrote ages ago that was just fluffy and didn't show a lot of character development is going to have to get overhauled to fit the new concept in, which at this point is just a slight complication but later I wanna hang like a whole plot off it, so it's gotta be here-- if I put it in later it won't have any support and might not really properly hold all the weight it needs to, so. And this scene was just fluff anyway and needs more stuff in it. So that's fine. But it's hard. Because of course all I want to do is skip ahead and write the juicy weighty scene this is gonna support. But if I do that (again, as i've been doing a lot in this series, ugh) i'll get there and it won't fit and i'll have to do more of this fiddly kind of work.

I did only miss Friday's update because I was physically too busy at the time, though. It's the wind-down of the farm season but that just means people have started to peel away to do other things, there's not actually a lot less work, and so those of us left are kind of juggling a lot more balls, even if they're less heavy than they were. (more wittering specifically about FFP behind the cut, and a snippet)

So I have a bunch of stuff allllllmost ready to post, but a bunch of tricky work to do for the continuations of them. There has been a spate lately of very nice comments, some rereaders and some new readers, and I appreciate all of you and it keeps me going, really it does.

I can't find the one, though, someone commented on the latest FFT that they thought Morvran might wind up a bit subby perhaps, and I literally cackled out loud. (Someone else was speculating that he's more traumatized/demi/gray than pure ace, which I also have been trying to convey-- he's ace-spec for sure but gray, is where I'm headed with him.)

I don't think Ciri is going to wind up being particularly domme-y in her preferences-- she also would like a pretty lady to push her around please-- but understand she was raised by a bunch of dommes all around, so I had a very early slightly-cracky notion that she thinks this is how het relationships have to work (this did bear fruit in an outside-of-series published work on AO3 thanks to the Smubbles folks, here: What Every Young Woman Needs)-- but there's an excerpt here I haven't quite yet fit into the FFP continuity, which I suppose I'll put here for everyone's delectation (Ciri POV, of Morvran):

He glanced up only briefly at her arrival, flashing her a quick smile but returning to whatever he was writing, clearly intently focused. She propped a hip on the edge of the desk, waiting, and he finished writing the line and looked up at her.  There was something about the way he looked up at her, like this, something open in his expression that usually wasn’t. It sort of made her want to pull his hair, and made her suddenly understand some things about the way her-- Geralt and Yennefer had acted, around one another. She’d always thought Yennefer was perhaps too mean to Geralt, but she could suddenly understand Yennefer’s perspective, and see that maybe it… well maybe it wasn’t being mean.  But. She didn’t know Morvran near well enough to offer to pull his hair.

Ask game: top five childhood books

I mean I think I'd have to go by series cause I'm too tried to remember individual novels....so!

Animorphs - I don't think any book series can ever and will ever stick to me the way animorphs did, I can still sometimes quote whole sections of the books by heart. Just the set up! the world building! the trauma! between it and ds9 and mash I really lived in the takeaway that war is terrible and will always do terrible things, cause you to do terrible things, and effect you for the rest of your life. I really like how it never shied away from the fact that these were kids forced to fight a war and that was unfair and also these were kids! of course sometimes things were silly. but yeah, everyone please read animorphs and be as fucked up as I was with the last book and spoilers death.

Tortall Series - I'm just grouping these all together but very very specifically for me Song of the Lioness and the Protector of the Small quartet are some of my absolute fave books still. Alanna and Kel are probably still some of my fave heroines and I really admired how they stood strong in everything they went through. being a short ill tempered red head myself I really stuck with Alanna too lol, my best friend who got me into the books specifically did it because she knew I'd relate to Alanna and she was right.

Redwall - I'm Canadian okay, these books were everywhere and as they should be, I loooooved how cozy these were, these books about creatures who fought their own wars and how interconnected the books were even though some were like hundreds of years apart. I even had a map of from the series on my wall and when I got a new book I'd pin where it took place like I was trying to figure out how close/far it was to the other places. I'd stopped reading them by the time the author died but hearing about devastated me and I dug out the books and reread them all, I still think the world building is some of the coolest out there

Magic Treehouse - I mean I know I read this more as a kid kid but damn if these books weren't fun, I had so many of them lying around the house and they were just fun quick little reads about kids having time adventures and we all know by now tumblr user ezrisdax is weak for time adventures

Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit - okay so like, I started reading when I was three and these were the books my dad read to us and the way the story goes was my siblings sat still and let him read them and I decided he was too slow and read the books myself and for the longest time up to my teen years I reread LotR/Hobbit every year (skipping the spider parts, what can I say, I'm a wimp with a phobia). I still have every poem/song in the Hobbit memorized. it's just burned into my head for now and always and I don't think I gotta say why I mean, it's a classic for reason right?

Second of all I asked about your commission I think it was a while ago when it first happened and just wondered how everything went and was wishing you all that was well with that.

And LAST but NOT LEAST, i was rereading Hotel California and Paradise Gardens (bc it’s a ritual for me at this point) and I just wanted to say I love the way your build your characters. Really I like to reread things though bc it’s so easy to miss things that were said or could’ve foreshadowed something later on. Like the whole thing with Calum in book one and they were ready to disintegrate that man where he stood even though OC said no bc it wasn’t even really him that set her off just the whole situation of it all being held “captive” and just feeling isolated so it was like the straw that broke the camels back thing. Fast forward to book 2 with Jake at the hospital and OCs crying but relieved bc she’s able to get her clarity, which never really gets to happen to people, and ofc the boys (ESPECIALLY Hongjoong) have the ‘touch her and you die’ mindset are so readily to disintegrate another man for her but instead Yeosang speaks up saying she said no and they actually let it go?????? For OCs mental wellbeing like they actually listened (reluctantly)??????? We love character growth around here 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️ Usually with yandere genres its not common to see them have a change in their mindset like they normally just stay effed up and could care less about their S/O true feelings so its nice to see how you build them up that way. And then in book 2 with Jongho being put 'under' OC said something to Hongjoong throwing back his words in his face with something he said the first day they met which i didnt notice the first time tiol i went baclnto read again. It's just the way you crafted your characters with such thought and care that makes the story line SO GOOD. Babe i am so sorry with how long this is but i just really wanted to talk about it

Ahhh, thank you so much!! I love going back to reread that series, too! I am ALL for character development and growth, especially in yandere stories. My absolute favourite are the ones you just KNOW not to fuck with, but they'll listen to the OC because they love them and vice versa. It's one of my favourite dynamics.

I guess it is kind of sad that I struggled with this list after no. 5 😬. Like, I literally sat here going “uhhhh.... aap noot mies, I guess? Kinda? Hmmm.”

There’s just a lot of older stuff that I don’t really remember. I’m sure they’re fine and that I will like them if I reread them. I only knew of two fics that I definitely did not want on the list, but most of the 68 fics are just kind of “in limbo”.

And also I gotta say that no. 1 to 4 kind of share a spot. Those are just my fave fics that I have written and I do not want to pit these bad bitches against each other but alas 😔. Okay. Woah. Good thing I split the categories because I genuinely had no idea Glee isn’t in my top 10. I am shook. Myosotis sylvatica is on no. 14! A Love, Victor fic has more kudos than my Glee fics. I didn’t even like Love, Victor which is why I wrote fix-its and missing scenes for it! Not gonna lie, this kind of saddens me. Or maybe sadden is too harsh. I don’t know. It makes me feel something. Glee is my main and my longest fandom (not counting Winx Club) (I will write that Winx Club/Glee crossover fic one day that is a threat) (to me).

I knew that the B99 was the most kudo’d because it accompanied a post that I made on Tumblr and that one also got a lot of notes. I’m happy All shall know the wonder is on no. 2 because I love that one. I am still so amused by people liking my Doctor Who clusterfuck. How lucky we are to be alive right now was my first Carry On fic and it definitely no longer represents how I write for this fandom, so the fact that it’s the most-well known (which I also knew) gives me mixed feelings because on one hand I look back on it with fondness in an “awww look at that wee baby” feeling, but on the other hand I’m like “please, read my later stuff”.

Carry On has definitely taken over, though, so what I said for Glee also applies to Check, Please!: there are some fics that I probably really like but it’s been a while since I read them (*cough*Midnight confessions*cough*). But yeah as I mentioned, my most kudo’d Carry On fic is my first. I am not surprised that Mr. Grimm-Pitch and Mr. Snow is my second highest kudo’d one for that fandom, because I love that one, but I just love other fics more. But even then, if I look at my personal top 10 I do feel like all of them were well-received (apart from SJAEU, but I don’t expect it to get a lot of hits since it is super niche, and My rose-coloured boy which is in my eyes my most underappreciated fic in Carry On, like, come on, it’s only 891 words long!) and I always love it when people kudo and comment on my fics.

ok...so ik im gonna mostly be giving the stuff that ive bookmarked on ao3 (which isn't at all a comprehensive list, theres sooo much more that ive loved but I don't use my acc to read at all so I usually just free-ball it when trying to remember fics, and yes, its a habit I very much hate lol) and in fact, I wish I could mention them all here but I would be writing a novel if I spoke about each and every one of the so ur best bet is to just check that list out honestly 

and also, yeah its not a YJ fic, but I enjoy how it follows his comic characters run and builds on it. I find his characterisation in this fic rlly interesting and authentic (also Max being Native American there is everything, I actually have this whole theory/HC in YJ that Max is a Native American “God” (like the ancient greek/roman gods) i.e commonly known as Mercury, that just kinda roams about but is mostly in New Genesis (no idea where that thread/post is rn but I read someone connecting Lightray to Hermes/Mercury and since then that idea has been stuck in my head lol)) 

okay I have gone totally off track (im so sorry omg) im gonna try to keep it concise from here lol, anyway supper recc sunshine falling, the writing is gorgeous and the plot is rlly interesting!

okay, im obsessed with this series, the world building is INSANE, the first fic in the series is basically a YJA AU where failsafe actually happened (whole flashfam except jay dies, but YJA bart still makes it to that TL cause he actually ended up dimension hopping rather than time travelling, or smn like that). To keep it short, his characterisation here is AMAZING, I love it sm, the second fic, flash facts is one of my all time favourites (if u ask me its the only canon take of his interaction with the rogues, cause don't get me started on how foul his comics history with them is (and not in a gd way)) so personally, this series, particularly flash facts, is just fantastic. it also very much explores other YJ/DC characters, (Dick is the central figure in AFTO and bart appears relatively later on and when the YJ Invasion plot passes, the plot focuses alot on other characters, especially considering its largely about Dicks evolution).

For zetaflash, I mean it quite literally when I say I think ive read almost all the fics under the tag... we are very much at that stage in the fandom, so yeah lol, quite a few of my faves are in my bookmarks but I haven't updated it in a while

Sooner than later, a Wally and bart oneshot on their YJ bond, its quite sweet, ft spitfire

Waking up to Ash and Dust  its incomplete (just one chapter) and quite an old fic, its also been super long since I last read it so I can't remember it clearly, gotta give it a reread but I remember it being a rlly interesting take on things so it stuck with me, basically an outsider POV of bart with OCs

📖 currently reading: I just finished Battle Scars (while I was supposed to be working ha, couldn’t help myself) (I don’t know how anyone comes away from this book not being obsessed with Cere) and I think next I’m going to reread This Is How You Lose The Time War because all the hubbub has been making me want to reread.

🎶 last song: R-Evolve, Thirty Seconds to Mars. Ok look, Jared Leto is a terrible person but he had a pretty decent alt rock emo band when I was in high school and it unfortunately embedded itself in my brain and my ‘time capsule’ playlist is really fun to run to

🎬 last movie: The last movie I actually sat down and paid attention to was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. The last movie I had on in the background while I was writing was...lol Paranormal Activity.

📺 last series: Ghoul on Netflix which was just okay plot-wise, but pretty fun horror effects and atmosphere. I also finished it last night (it was only 3 episodes) so I’ll need to pick a new one tonight. I’m also rewatching Community.

🍴sweet, spicy, savoury: I think they all have their place, but gotta end with a sweet.

🤤 craving: Something sweet. I have nothing.

☕ tea or coffee: Coffee, 100%! I actually don’t really like tea, except for Lemon-Ginger with honey when I’m sick.

🤓 currently working on: I’m just happy to be working on anything. I feel like I’m still sort of finding my footing after being a mess of writer’s block and anxiety for months. I have a whole bunch of drafts that I could feasibly finish: the murder mystery fic I started posting last night, something for my bad things happen bingo card (which I haven’t forgotten about!), this one other thing about a grave, or the super long wip about a serial killer (though I think I’ve fucked up the timelines might have to be scrapped), or my magnum opus about death gods and rivers I swear I’ll finish one day.

I’ve got lots of options! I’m no longer stuck in that anxiety spiral! (Knock on wood lol) Exciting! As usual, please consider this an open tag as I have no idea who has already done this meme or wants to or...etc. Open tag! Go forth!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA THIS GOT ME ROLLING 🤣🤣🤣 Dude loves that song so much he even has a solo from it. I mean, yeah it's a good song but I also think it's boring and a far cry from what NCT 127's signature songs are. Sticker IS a masterpiece. They managed to turn that weird instrumental into something amazing with purely their vocals and rap, and if there is one group who could pull that off, it's NCT 127. I am throwing knives at the next person I see slandering Sticker. 🔪

2 Baddies MV is really good and as much as I hate to admit it, it might've been a big factor as to why I liked the song just after the first listen, which rarely happens to me with 127 title songs because I always need time to process them due to all the noise and such. I think it was the nananananananana near the end that got me hooked it was so addicting and seeing the members jamming to it was just so fun.

I know Jaehyun was originally trained to be a rapper but him getting more rap lines in new songs makes me sad too because HIS DEEP VOCALS HUHU I'm a sucker for it and I'm kinda sad I don't get to hear it as much. (tho I still wanna fight him for what he did in the Killing Voice video. Have you heard him in the opening of Lemonade there??? I WANT TO PUNCH HIS THROAT WHO TOLD HIM HE CAN LOWER HIS VOICE THAT MUCH AND MAKE ME WET)

I really think sometimes that Doyoung does this shit just to annoy us lol we have that kind of relationship with him. Ironically it’s only antis I’ve seen that hate on Sticker. All the czennies I know or follow love it. She’s iconic!

Jaehyun’s vocals are so beautiful he’s the #1 member I want to have a solo album (followed very closely by Ten) because his voice is just *swoon* and the whole r&b vibes he prefers suits him so well. I saw clips from that video and I agree. Sometimes his deep ass voice makes me [redacted]

Thank you for supporting all the nonsense I write on this blog! I wasn’t totally satisfied with Emergency when I posted it even though my beta reader gave it her stamp of approval so I fleshed it out a little more (it went from 8k to 9k).

With the future chapters I will be focusing on the boys’ pov because I notice I tend to give too much insight and detail for all the characters and I need to be more limited in this series if that makes sense. I get the picture in my head and it didn’t come out how I wanted when writing so I went back and fixed it haha

last tv show: I've been slowly ambling through Amazon's Wheel of Time series, so I think that? 1.book you’ve reread the most times?

gosh okay so honestly probably Animorphs (yes, the whole series--i used to reread All Of Them every 3-4 years, and i can't remember when i stopped but i know i'm Long Overdue) or the Bartimaeus trilogy by Jonathan Stroud, because those were both childhood staples and i just. have had the longest amount of time to reread them lol.

as far as recent additions go: i'm up to 2 times through Murderbot and 2 times through Gideon the Ninth (i'll do a third this fallish as Nona prep, plus my first reread of Harrow)--both, i feel like, impressive, given how recently they came onto my radar.

7.is there a series/book that got you into reading?

wow i'm really gonna be a broken record about this ask game but: Animorphs is the first thing i remember Obsessing over (even though i'm pretty sure i was always a Reader Kid). it's also hilarious and telling to see the Animorphs influence in my writer life, but that's not what this is asking.

14.do you ever mark/dog ear books you own?

i used to be a dog-earer (because yeah right could i find a Bookmark ever as a child), but i stopped that as i started buying primarily new books over used--i like my library as pristine as possible, so i can come back to it Fresh Every Time. i do love the history in used books!! i like seeing what other people have marked and written and dog-eared, i just. don't. do that. in new books i buy for myself.

similarly: i've never been one to mark books up because i'm Really Bad at drawing straight lines, and it Bothers Me™. i also had a teacher in high school who Forced Us to mark in our books, and i did it so thoroughly that i rendered my copies unreadable, and that was irritating. i'll flag things with those colorful tabs (they gotta color coordinate with the book in question, though), and i'll jot down Fave Quotes and such elsewhere, but if i mark something it's in pen, and if it's in pen it's gotta be Good, and you don't get do-overs in pen, so i usually don't risk it.

Kind of back from my hiatus. I’ve finished my last homework assignments, but I still have another week of classes. So I’m not quite done with school, but I will be back on Tumblr now. Though I’m going to try my best not to spend too much time on here. I don’t want to waste a bunch of time scrolling endlessly like I used to do. I want to get a couple books finished by the end of the year. Maybe try to get something published?

I’ve started two new projects since I went on hiatus. One is (tentatively) called Sleeping Empire, and it’s basically Lethal Love with better worldbuilding. I haven’t decided if I’m giving up on LL or if I’m going to rework it, but it’s at least temporarily shelved, so SE is currently my only medieval fantasy enemies-to-lovers project. And then I have a whole cast and setting for another novel (series?) but no main plot. The working title for that is Bellamira. I’m thinking it’s going to be a dark academia cross between The Raven Cycle and Harry Potter. But that’s definitely subject to change.

In other news, it’s 5 months into the year and I’ve read one (1) novel. So I’m going to the library after class today and I’m going to get SO MANY books and then I’m going to do nothing but read for 3 weeks.

Short version: Kakashi’s not as experienced as you might think, but this doesn’t translate into lack of skill in any way.

The long version: Ahhh so I go back on forth on this but I’ma attempt to think this through here. Okay, so, fandom has generally two sides when it comes to Kakashi and this topic. He’s either the completely suave, smooth ladies’ man who has all the one night stands or on account of his issues he’s a passive, stuttering virgin who’s constantly flustered.

Neither of these are that accurate. So I do get ladies man Kakashi to a point. It comes from the fact that he is quite smooth? And women do seem to like him quite easily in the series. And Kakashi definitely has the capacity to be a charmer, and is quite good at flirting when his job requires it or it’s a stranger etc. He’s good at reading people and winning them over. This is more complicated when he’s faced with someone he’s attracted to, or that has the potential to mean something to him. He still might be charming, but he’s very good at using this to keep you further from him, so you can’t really get to know him or get close to him so it’s not quite the same. It’s his way of controlling the distance between you.

Now, when it comes to experience, I don’t think Kakashi’s incapable of using casual sex as some kind of a coping mechanism (it’s not the healthiest), but if he was going to do this, it’d be during the latter part of his ANBU years. I can see him having sex as just a means to forget and remember he’s alive, and quell an urge, with basically faceless partners, or maybe complete strangers on missions. This does make him feel even lonelier after a while though, and it’s not really what he wants. Eventually having sex with women he’ll never see again serves to make him more miserable, and I think by the time we see him at the beginning of the series he doesn’t really do this anymore. So I wouldn’t say he’s completely inexperienced sexually at least, though he definitely is romantically.

Generally after that, Kakashi’s gonna reserve sex for someone who he has a deep emotional and physical connection with, but God forbid he ever calls it what it is - a relationship. Basically, if he’s sleeping with you, he pretty much loves you whether he knows it or not. And if he’s comparing that to his past experiences, he really feels the difference and cherishes it all the more (but it still scares him and he won’t admit it to himself.

So here’s how I see it. There’s always been a sexual chemistry between him and you, and a physical and romantic attraction. But of course Kakashi is Kakashi so he does absolutely nothing about it and doesn’t want to let you do anything about it. Still, you’re surprisingly persistent, and you do become close to each other in a friendly capacity, in whatever way Kakashi’s able to participate in that. Eventually, ( I haven’t thought this through quite yet) you do end up fucking and Kakashi tries to convince himself that he can just do that, that he can keep up having great sex with a great friend and that you don’t mean the world to him. It does depend on the mood between you, what kinda day he’s had, what position you’re in etc but he places a lot of value on sex in your relationship, for the intimacy and emotional bonding, not just the physical pleasure. Currently Reading: My Dress-Up Darling (which I HIGHLY recommend if you’re into wholesome and can tolerate/enjoy PLENTY of ecchi content in an manga/anime). I’m also thinking of finally actually reading bnha instead of only watching it. The next season is taking too long and I’m starving for content.

Last Song: y’all gonna hate this, but I don’t really listen to music that often… it was probably something super mundane like a top 40 pop song on the radio while I was driving. Last song I like purposely listened to was the Tuna Fishing song from the game Spiritfarer lol. It’s a jam ok.

Last Movie: Jujutsu Kaisen 0. I saw it for my birthday and it was GLORIOUS.

Last Series: Currently watching Our Flag Means Death. Slowly lol. Trying to make it last. I’m also currently watching the new season of Demon Slayer. Fave Fanfic: good gosh idk if I even know that. I don’t ever reread fics. It’s just a thing. I don’t rewatch most shows either. (Except a special few). So once I’ve read a fic it just kind of, gets added to my history and I move on? I know that sounds terrible. I read on AO3 so I always leave kudos and a comment on the ones I enjoy. I just don’t bother to hold on to them or reread them. BUT I usually read bnha fics just because there are SO MANY of them. Plenty to choose from. I also read fics for ancient magus bride, spirited away, inuyasha, demon slayer, and Zelda BOTW. But I couldn’t give a favorite unfortunately.

Look I got multiple scenes that I loved/hated/left me reeling from your fics.

Yibbum: Damon's death scene and Stefan's desiccation. It had been a minute since I read that fic but my God that scene stayed with me. It was so obvious Damon was tortured and the way his body was left? Whew.

Dr. Parker Series: While I loved the entirety of this series the scene from The Bait with the compelled girl is the scene for me. It starts off mildly then Bonnie gets the phone and bam it becomes something out of a psychological thriller.

Original Sin: The whole fic. No I think when Abby does that spell and traps Kai in this small cube of space. Ngl a part of me wanted to throw hands with Abby. I mean it was warranted but man.

Long Shadows: So much goes down in this fic. I don't even know where to begin. You are an incredible writer. You were one of the first yandere writing blogs I found and you’re still one I check in on regularly to see what you have been working on. You can portray a sense of suspense and intrigue in a natural way that many other writers - published ones included - struggle with. You delve into the darkness without it feeling forced, and you have an amazing grasp on the psyches of the characters you write for (which is a quality I adore in writing and strive toward myself).

Realm of the Quarantine Reread End-of-Book Questionnaire: Assassin’s Apprentice

Any differences between your first/previous reading experience and this one?

Uhhhhh yep!! I can’t even believe how different it was. Every scene has taken on an entirely different colour and flavour in my memory. I skimmed far too much the first time, yes, but also I just went into it with the wrong framework. I think I’ve mentioned this before but my mum recommended me these books on the basis of my love of A Song of Ice and Fire. She directly compared them and said how similar they were. Because of RotE’s length I had been putting it off for years, and only finally picked up Assassin’s Apprentice because I was itching to do an ASOIAF reread but was (and am) trying to wait until Winds of Winter to do it. 

So you can imagine the difficulty settling into a book like Assassin’s Apprentice when you’re expecting Game of Thrones. I remember my overall impression on my first read being that it was a pretty standard fantasy novel with the only really exceptional thing about it being the characters and their relationships. Characters are always my top priority so it was enough to keep me invested and progressing onto the next book and the rest of the series, but I did so not having absorbed nearly as much as I should have from the first book in the series.

Now, just from revisiting that first book, my understanding of Fitz and the world he operates in has exponentially increased and I know that will transform my experience of every book going forward. I really made sure to make myself slow down and read every word; absorb descriptions and just be in each moment without racing to the next one. Overall this book (and all the Fitz books) are much more concerned with the human condition and the effects of abuse and trauma and deep loneliness than being an epic fantasy. In fact it barely reads like fantasy at all; it’s incredibly grounded and focused. Of course the elements are there, but while Assassin’s Apprentice may not be as subversive as the rest of the series, it is certainly not generic fantasy. This book just feels alive to me now in a way it didn’t before against the rest of the series. I can regard it as a beautiful piece of the puzzle in its own right instead of just the setup. I wanna reiterate I always really liked Assassin’s Apprentice but it just paled in comparison to my unholy obsession with the rest of it. Idk this reread just really shifted a lot of things into perspective for me and I’m excited!!

Favourite character introduction moments/scenes

It’s gotta be a tie between the Fool, Kettricken and Patience (realising there is a common theme here of Fitz making an idiot of himself). I genuinely was laughing so hard when Fitz is like, actively making himself smaller and so pleased with himself trying to help the Fool, and of course the Fool’s iconic “listen you idiot” ugh it’s just chef’s kiss baby, that’s what we in the biz call a meet-cute! (I know they have seen each other before, but this is the first time the Fool talks to Fitz). Then of course we have Kettricken who poisons Fitz at their first meeting, and Patience who Fitz continuously embarrasses himself in front of before even realising who she is. The fact that all three of these people end up being some of Fitz’s only genuinely loving relationships makes it even better.

Favourite character arcs

I think I’ve gotta go with Verity and Burrich. Verity goes from kind of a bloke’s bloke (he was so different in the beginning than I remembered!) to being a proper King-in-Waiting. He is self-sacrificial but not for pride; he genuinely cares deeply for his people, as a whole and as individuals, and will do anything it takes to protect them. He is far from perfect, and he could have done a lot more for Fitz when he was younger, but once Fitz is in his eyeline and he is confronted with the life the boy has led he seems suitably shamed and tries to do his best for him. He’s a good boy and I love him!

Burrich of course is just. unlucky. His health deteriorates due to injuries. He gets saddled with some kid and is burdened to bring him up to an impossible standard he has set himself (to not shame a man he has an impossibly high opinion of). He’s deprived of a job he loved and was good at, and most importantly he’s deprived of his boyfriend I mean lover I mean “master”.

His arc is not a happy one at all but it is compelling, and I can’t help but love him and feel for him despite also disagreeing with him on almost everything :)

Favourite quote/s

Unfortunately I don’t have any tabs atm so I couldn’t really keep track, but my heart exploded when Fitz said to the Fool after going into his room, “I wish I had a place that were as much me as that place is you.”

Favourite relationships

Fitz/Fool obviously. Even though they don’t have that many interactions in this book I loved every single one of them. The Fool volunteering to care for Smithy after Fitz has endured a long day of horrendous abuse is just!!!!! Kindness! What a concept! I could really see why they develop such a deep bond so quickly.

Fitz/Burrich is just so real and so compelling and it hurts me but I love it. Fitz/Chade breaks my heart bc Chade is manipulating his way into Fitz’s heart - I think without realising it a lot of the time bc he is lonely too, but the power imbalance is not okay when he is the centre of Fitz’s world for a long time and the closest thing he has to a friend. Knowing how Chade behaves not too much later just makes it even worse when he is so nice in this book because it just shows why Fitz has such a hard time being his own person and saying no to Chade ever.

Fitz/Verity for obvious reasons. Fitz/Hands!! They’re cute but it makes me sad that Hands betrays him in AQ. Weirdly I liked Fitz/Molly way more this time but more their friendship than anything. And next is Royal Assassin and their deeply toxic romance soooooo.

And Fitz and his puppies BUT WE DON’T TALK ABOUT THAT.

Favourite setting

Do yourself a favour and read the description of the Mountain Kingdom and specifically the palace. It is STUNNING and something I completely skimmed over the first time cos I’m a dumb idiot bitch I could have been picturing a city of huge colourful tulips all this time but fuck me I guess!!

Favourite chapter

As a rereader I think I’ve gotta say chapter one. There’s just so much to pick apart all crammed into one chapter. It still holds a lot of mystery even when you’ve read the entire series.

Most loved character

At this point I’ve gotta say Fitz. That’s who my heart is with during this book and he NEEDS IT

Most hated character

Okay I found Regal a much better villain on this read and hated him A LOT but whomst I despised even more w the very fibre of my being was Galen bitch disgusting!!!!!! Verity was so like, smug?? when he killed him and it was so satisfying. It’s what she deserves!!

Raise your hand if you’ve been personally victimised by Robin Hobb (most heartbreaking and/or visceral moments)

Literally this whole book was so harsh and I was perpetually emo throughout but off the top of my head, Fitz’s depressive episode after Shrewd and Chade test his loyalty fricking broke me, as did the entirety of Galen’s abuse/training; since I was paying so much more attention this time it hit a lot harder that he is an absolute textbook abuser and the psychological torment he inflicts on Fitz is just. deeply upsetting to say the least. It really got under my skin.

Details, observations, spoilery notes made with the benefit of the full picture

Okay this is where I just dump all the notes I took while reading that don’t fit anywhere else. It’ll be long lol so strap in.

- It’s never not funny to me that Narrator Fitz comes across as like a hundred years old when in actuality he is like twenty. Also that he looks back on himself with such a sense of wisdom and superiority, yet we know there is dumbarsery aplenty to come. Amazing.

- I’ve never really registered that for the first six years of his life Fitz had a mother who loved him and I don’t know how to feel about that

- REVELATION THAT SEEMS REALLY OBVIOUS IN HINDSIGHT: Fitz most likely only spoke Chyurdan when he was abandoned, which would have played a huge role in why he was not only quiet but unresponsive to what was happening around him. He probably didn’t even understand that he wasn’t going to see his mother again until much later, and he didn’t know how to ask questions. When he goes to the Mountain Kingdom and Kettricken comments that he speaks Chyurdan like someone remembering the language he doesn’t comment on it, so it’s likely that future Fitz doesn’t register that he didn’t always speak Six Duchies(?). He mentions in the narration that the memory of being abandoned is incredibly stark but not necessarily reliable, and possibly shaped by the Skill, which to me opens up the possibility that his memory is essentially auto-translating for him things he didn’t understand at the time. We also know that at the time of writing this he’s given up his memories of his mother etc. up to the stone dragon, so obviously his recollections of these traumatic events are going to be warped by that. Anyway thanks to my sister for pointing this out and being much smarter than me.

- According to Fitz’s grandfather, Chivalry always knew about Fitz. Don’t know how trustworthy a man desperate to yeet his grandson out of his care is but there ya go.

- Weird and hilarious that Shrewd tries to see Fitz on the day he arrives but then just like. What? Forgets about him? For years? lol

- Chade literally tells Fitz that he is a king’s man now and that’s the most important thing about him YIKES

- Chade becomes the closest thing Fitz has to a friend for quite a long time and that is fucking depressing

- It’s interesting that Chade had to be convinced to teach Fitz. It’s hinted at that there was an ~incident~ the last time they tried to train someone, followed by a long period of Chade being left to rot in the walls.

- Not to be out here diagnosing fictional characters but like.Fitz. Literally has depression.

- Fitz having to turn down Fedwren’s offer of apprenticing for him is so sad. It’s the life Fitz should have had.

- The Fool’s non-binary gender is mentioned as early as Chapter Nine! (Published in 1995! We have no choice but to stan!)

- “So quickly we were all made accomplices in our own degradation.” OOF.

- I really realised this time that the reason Fitz seems so shit at things he trained his whole life for later is because all that training was interrupted by many months of isolation, deprivation and abuse. All at the age of like 13-14. He got out of the habit of subconsciously acting in a way that Burrich or Chade would approve of. For a long time the only person he needed approval from was Galen, and he became completely single-minded about it because that was his means of survival. And you don’t just recover from that - especially since neither Chade or Burrich would give him the time of day for an extended period *after* his training was done. When Chade did finally talk to him again it wasn’t to recommence training really; he just gave him a bunch of tasks to do. By the time Fitz got to the Mountain Kingdom he was completely out of practice, and still managed pretty bloody well in spite of it.

- Kind of related to the last point: I love that while Fitz isn’t a savant at anything he’s a pretty realistic jack of all trades. He not only has an aptitude for learning almost any skill or subject but a genuine broad curiosity too. It’s one of the few things that is just him, ya know? It’s just his personality and something he can find joy in, even if it does also factor into his being used by others.

- Imagine being Burrich and finding out that your son thought you were a dog murderer for like ten years lol ouch

- Fitz thinks about the Fool soooo often in the Mountain Kingdom, pointing out things that remind him of him, or things he would like. It’s v soft tbh I love them so much!!

- Another dumb thing I forgot is that Regal is convinced that Shrewd had Fitz poison his mother to death, which adds a rather important layer onto his motivations lol
