The history of Solarpunk
Tumblr media
Okay, I guess this has to be said, because the people will always claim the same wrong thing: No, Solarpunk did not "start out as an aesthetic". Jesus, where the hell does this claim even come from? Like, honestly, I am asking.
Solarpunk started out as a genre, that yes, did also include design elements, but also literary elements. A vaguely defined literary genre, but a genre never the less.
And I am not even talking about those early books that we today also claim under the Solarpunk umbrella. So, no, I am not talking about Ursula K. LeGuin, even though she definitely was a big influence on the genre.
The actual history of Solarpunk goes something like that: In the late 1990s and early 2000s the term "Ecopunk" was coined, which was used to refer to books that kinda fit into the Cyberpunk genre umbrella, but were more focused on ecological themes. This was less focused on the "high tech, high life" mantra that Solarpunk ended up with, but it was SciFi stories, that were focused on people interacting with the environment. Often set to a backdrop of environmental apocalypse. Now, other than Solarpunk just a bit later, this genre never got that well defined (especially with Solarpunk kinda taking over the role). As such there is only a handful of things that ever officially called themselves Ecopunk.
At the same time, though, the same sort of thought was picked up in the Brazilian science fiction scene, where the idea was further developed. Both artistically, where it got a lot of influence from the Amazofuturism movement, but also as an ideology. In this there were the ideas from Ecopunk as the "scifi in the ecological collaps" in there, but also the idea of "scifi with technology that allows us to live within the changing world/allows us to live more in harmony with nature".
Now, we do not really know who came up with the idea of naming this "Solarpunk". From all I can find the earliest mention of the term "Solarpunk" that is still online today is in this article from the Blog Republic of Bees. But given the way the blogger talks about it, it is clear there was some vague definition of the genre before it.
These days it is kinda argued about whether that title originally arose in Brazil or in the Anglosphere. But it seems very likely that the term was coined between 2006 and 2008, coming either out of the Brazilian movement around Ecopunk or out of the English Steampunk movement (specifically the literary branch of the Steampunk genre).
In the following years it was thrown around for a bit (there is an archived Wired article from 2009, that mentions the term once, as well as one other article), but for the moment there was not a lot happening in this regard.
Until 2012, when the Brazilian Solarpunk movement really started to bloom and at the same time in Italy Commando Jugendstil made their appearance. In 2012 in Brazil the anthology "Solarpunk: Histórias ecológicas e fantásticas em um mundo sustentável" was released (that did get an English translation not too long ago) establishing some groundwork for the genre. And Commando Jugendstil, who describe themselves as both a "Communication Project" and an "Art Movement", started to work on Solarpunk in Italy. Now, Commando Jugendstil is a bit more complicated than just one or the other. As they very much were a big influence on some of the aesthetic concepts, but also were releasing short stories and did some actual punky political action within Italy.
And all of that was happening in 2012, where the term really started to take off.
And only after this, in 2014, Solarpunk became this aesthetic we know today, when a (now defuct) tumblr blog started posting photos, artworks and other aesthetical things under the caption of Solarpunk. Especially as it was the first time the term was widely used within the Anglosphere.
Undoubtedly: This was probably how most people first learned of Solarpunk... But it was not how Solarpunk started. So, please stop spreading that myth.
The reason this bothers me so much is, that it so widely ignores how this movement definitely has its roots within Latin America and specifically Brazil. Instead this myth basically tries to claim Solarpunk as a thing that fully and completely originated within the anglosphere. Which is just is not.
And yes, there was artistic aspects to that early Solarpunk movement, too. But also a literary and political aspectt. That is not something that was put onto a term that was originally an aesthetic - but rather it was something that was there from the very beginning.
Again: There has been an artistic and aesthetic aspect in Solarpunk from the very beginning, yes. But there has been a literary and political aspect in it the entire time, too. And trying to divorce Solarpunk from those things is just wrong and also... kinda misses the point.
So, please. Just stop claiming that entire "it has been an aesthetic first" thing. Solarpunk is a genre of fiction, it is a political movement, just as much as it is an artistic movement. Always has been. And there has always been punk in it. So, please, stop acting as if Solarpunk is just "pretty artistic vibes". It is not.
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk, I guess.

i notice a lot of reactionary conservative remarks you see online tend to consist of a person saying, like, "sighh..... i wish i could do [thing that people can definitely go do]," followed for a call for society to be restructured so that this thing, currently possible but not mandatory, would become mandatory.
A recent example would be that tiktok lady saying "women shouldn't have rights because i would rather be cleaning than doing college coursework." If it really were just a matter of this individual woman preferring mopping to academics, she could drop out and search "janitor jobs near me" on indeed dot com. But she doesn't. She doesn't feel like she can independently choose to do that, for some reason. If indeed this is a sincere feeling at all, she doesn't feel like she's allowed to pursue that impulse unless The Rules Of Society command her to do so. And so she calls for a hell dystopia that everyone hates.
A more aesthetic-focused example would be, like, a "trad" woman who posts pictures of pretty 19th century dresses and says "society would be better if all women still dressed like this!!!" She says this and completely ignores the fact that community theater actors, goths, cosplayers, steampunks, and other types alt-fashion enthusiasts wear pretty 19th century dresses all the time. She doesn't just want to wear a pretty dress; if she did, she could go join one of those alt-fashion communities. Why doesn't she? Again presuming there is a sincere desire here, maybe it's just that goths and steampunks and cosplayers are weirdos, and her desire to be normal wins out over her desire to wear what she likes. So, I guess, she posits this zero-sum world where she can only wear what she wants if everybody else is forced to dress the same.
Weird phenomenon. Not entirely sure how to interpret it. People tend to say that conservatism is individualist, but this refusal to take an individual action unless you can make everyone else do it with you is not very independent and self-sufficient at all.

I don’t think this has been mentioned, but has anyone thought about the way Rex and his ‘tough’ aesthetic kind of contrasts with Apocalypseburg's ideas on what being tough look and act like?
Like if you compare the two, there is a big difference in the way the two look, and I guess act as well.
With the Apocalypseburgers, they mostly stick to a brown color palette, and kind of have a steampunk/gangster vibe to them? (I don't know how to describe it). They also don't seem to look as 'cleaned' up, more like trying to show off their supposed toughness by looking all roughed up and like they've been in a fight (tbh they probably were).
Rex also goes along with the darker aesthetic (Since that's basically the stereotype for toughness), but less of the exaggerated rough dirtiness the Apocalypseburgers have, and edging more onto the sleek and sci-fi side. The dark blue and bright green accents also contribute to it, making him seem much more cleaned up (and I guess futuristic?(ha)) compared to the Apocalypseburgers.
I guess the way Apocalypseburg do their hair is also really distinctive. It kinda has a punk rock feel to it? Mohawks, tied up, or just long and messy (I could be leaving some out but that's the general ~vibe~).
Not too sure how to describe Rex and his hairstyle, because I would assume it's something that (If we're talking real-world rules) he would have to grow out from his 'Emmet' hairstyle, and it's a lot more -I wanna say- fluffy?
Apocalyspseburgers also have-like- an excessive amount of accessories, with all the heavy metal shoulder pads, spikes, or metal accents to their clothes. It gets just a bit obnoxious at times like they're trying just a bit too hard to fit in (But it works anyway). And besides, that makes it hard to do things sometimes because of the overwhelming amount of just straight-up metal on them at all times.
Rex... see for him I like to think that he has an absurd amount of weapons on his person, but he hides them well so you don't really notice them unless you know where they are (It's like that Lego Batman scene where Batman just pulls out a whole ass bazooka when going through security check), and he just has the most random things that actually end up being really useful (Plot device, also... a lot like Emmet). So he doesn't have as many accessories as an Apocalypseburgian, but still has a few things here and there.
I guess in the end it's really just Rex wanting to develop that tough personality that he was pushed into, but in a way that still sets him apart from Apocalypseburg since he has so many bad memories and experiences in that place (Also he just straight up hates all of them).

Does anyone know the name of this possible aesthetic from around the same time as Frutiger Aero/Y2K in the 2000s or am I just going crazy?
I was just wondering if anyone knows what this possible aesthetic that was semi-around during the time of Y2K-Frutiger Aero that’s kind of a steampunk aesthetic but associated with computers and such.
What mainly comes to mind is that of the Vista Game, Tinker as well as some other things like Abe’s Oddessy, The Da Vinci theme from Windows XP”s Microsoft plus pack, and oddly Rhis Binary Universe from BT and maybe a bit of the Layton series
But what I’m trying to describe is this computer aesthetic that uses a sort of Steampunk, Steelpunk, and or Gear punk vibe that I swear I recall seeing extremely sparsely around the web.
It tends to use a lot of shades of brown, old fantastic machines like that seen with Da Vinci’s concepts, robots, pipes and metal and other stuff.
Or am I just going crazy and making stuff up with this being just a genre of steampunk. Plz help me…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
youtube
And if this is really some aesthetic I just discovered then I guess I may name it…. Maybe something like Internet or Computer Retrofuturism (Look idk so you guys can think of a good name or IDK)

I've been finally watching an FF7 playthrough and I did not expect what the game's identity ended up being.
Currently at the end of "Disc 1".
I knew about Aerith's death long before I truly cared about Final Fantasy, but what I did not know about was literally anything else.
Aerith's backstory as an ancient, Sephiroth's characterisation as an horror villain across the game, Barret and Dyne, Nanaki and Seto.
Before Aerith even dies, we learn Sephiroth can literally control Cloud and he first ends up beating her up and then later at the capital almost killing her because of Sephiroth's ability to control him.
It's fucked, but absolutely incredible storytelling by itself.
Sephiroth's minimalistic presence itself makes him a fantastic villain because of his relation to Cloud and whatever screwed up cosmic horror Jenova is.
I did not see any of the psychological aspects of the story coming.
And I think it's an incredibly well-told narrative from just a plain script perspective, too.
Everything matters in some form, very few dialog boxes are wasted.
I also get why everyone is shipped with everyone.
Because all of them have such strong dynamics with each other even if the dialog is really straight-forward.
Guess I'm 100% a fan.
(Also as a massive FF14 fan, FF7 is an absolutely fascinating thematic companion to FF14 and I'm only at the end of disc 1.
I love, love how FF14 does its own thing while paying tribute to all other FFs. It's absolutely a tribute, but still very much has its own identity as a game and narrative.)
I'm turning into kind of a massive FF fan narratively at least, I think – FF7 is fantastic dark sci-fi/fantasy, FF6 fantastic steampunk/high fantasy and FF14 is some of the best long-form storytelling ranging from lower to higher fantasy, light-hearted to dark fantasy and a bunch of aesthetics beyond these basics that somehow all blend.
Now from all other FF stories I've seen fully, I think FF10, FF4 and FF16 are the ones I'd place lower narratively.
I think FF10 is my least fav of these because none of the cast did much for me, FF4 has the least depth narratively, though it is still pretty fun and FF16 suffers a bunch because of its uneven last third or so, even if I like the cast and base themes a bunch.
But what I like about them all the most is that even within the turn-based formula they all feel very different to each other, again, narratively-speaking. 16 is very little like 7 and even 4 and 6, the games I consider to be closest tonally handle characterisation and narrative structure pretty differently.
Each game brings something new to the table *the series* has not done before in some form. For example, as far as I know 16 is probably one of the most low fantasy games we've had in the series.
It's not new in the broader context of fantasy media, but it is new for FF.
And I like series that don't sit still like that.

Cowboy like me
Summary: Having worked as a freelancer in Emon you’ve run into Vox Machina and their shenanigans on a handful of occasions. Often you feel drawn into their chaos and to one of their particular steampunk aesthetic members. But maybe that’s because you have more in common than one might think.
A/N: So what I’m using some Taylor Swift song inspiration this year. It’s fun I got some good ones lined up for it too.
Tumblr media
Maybe it was fate that I landed in this one small-town tavern, it certainly couldn’t have been luck. I had just been in town running “errands”, small gigs that didn’t take me too far off my desired path. This one was just a simple retrieval of a missing wedding ring, perhaps the man should have held on to it a bit tighter the last time he was here, but that wasn’t for me to say.
“Yeah, I found that one last week, but I put it with the other things that have gotten left here over the years. You’ll have to give me a minute to find it.”
“Take your time,” I said, tossing the barkeep a few spare coins for the effort.
I sat down, taking hold of my glass and staring at the wall behind the bar.
“(y/n)?”
I was surprised to even hear my name in a place like this, but his face was easily recognizable once I turned around. “Percy?”
He shook his head almost in disbelief, “I really didn’t think we’d ever run into you again. How long has it been?”
“Let’s see, the last time was the mimic case, so a while, I guess. So the whole crew is here then?”
“Oh yes, think I could leave them unsupervised?” He nodded his head in the direction of where a few members of his found family set, most of them drunker than they ought to be. “We were just passing through looking for work. You know how it is.”
“Tell me about it.” I said, turning back to stare at the wall.
“How are you handling these days?” He said, taking the seat next to me.
“I take the odd job for the money, I make ends meet, but I’m looking for bigger prey presently.”
“Bigger prey?”
“Story for another day.”
“And what might you do once you track down this bigger prey?”
“You don’t have to worry about me, Percival, I got some tricks up my sleeve.”
“You can call me Percy, you know?”
“I know,” I smiled while drinking from my glass.
“Well, the offer always still stands to join Vox Machina if you ever want the company.”
I tried not to smile at the offer. “Is that offer from the whole group, or just you?” He tried to hide the smile and light blush from my suggestion. “Can’t, a group like yours might just slow me down. Honestly, I’m shocked you're still with them.”
“Why do you say that?” I turned looking at him, he had a deep crease in his brow, questioning me. Almost like he was trying to figure out a puzzle.
“You may play the gentleman Percival, but I can read it in your eyes, you're just another cowboy. And like any true cowboy, you’re really after one thing.”
“And what is that?”
“Revenge.”
“What makes you think I want revenge?”
“Call it a woman's intuition.” Just as I took a long sip finishing my drink, the barkeep came back with the ring in hand.
“Here you go, miss.”
“Thank you, kind sir.” I smiled, pocketing the ring and standing up to leave.
“You’re going to leave already? At least let me buy you a drink,” Percy tried.
“I got what I came for, it’s time I head out.”
“You know, (y/n), you’re not as mysterious and cool as you think you are.” I raised my eyebrow, questioning where he was going with this.
He stood up, standing closer this time. “You're a woman on a mission.”
“Pray tell, dear Percival, what is that mission?”
He smiled, leaning in closer. “It's obvious, dear (y/n). You’re a cowboy, just like me.”
I tried to play it off with a shake of my head as I started walking toward the door.
“Hey (y/n)!” Percy shouted from across the room. “Good luck with your bigger prey” He smirked before he turned back to his friends.
As I left the bar, I could feel the goosebumps on my arms, shaking my head. Oh, y/n you are playing a dangerous game getting distracted like this. You’ve been there before, just run before it's too late. It still blows my mind how he could just read and call me out like that, but I guess it takes one to know one. But by now I should know to stay away from cowboys.

For the ask game :)
📷🎵😏🐸🍪🦋💎
Thank you! Some of these were quite difficult.
📷 What’s set as your phone’s lockscreen?
Technically it’s an edit of my old ponies that I did ages ago. But rn I also use the progress pride flag wiggly one that iPhone has bc it’s fun to open.
🎵Last song you listened to?
I just watched Tender Rain’s Helen Magnus edit on youtube to Gladiator by Zayde Wølf if that counts.
😏 Are you on discord?
I am! Same as on Ao3 but all lowercase ID.
🐸 Describe your aesthetic.
Dark academia, gothic, steampunk. Still working on dressing a bit more like that though. It’s a slow process.
I love contrasts as well, like black (or possibly white) backgrounds with small details in strong colours. And being quite androgynous I like messing around with perceived femininity and masculinity, like dressing masculine and wearing makeup or feminine but with more butch hair.
I think in general I’m trying to look queer I guess? In every sense of the word. And yes I’m the leather and flannels gay in the friend group.
🍪 If you were a cookie, what kind would you be?
Gosh… no idea. Last ones I ate were kolasnittar, I think they’re called Swedish caramel cuts in English.
🦋 Describe yourself in three words.
Stubborn, queer, horses
💎 What’s your most prized possession?
I wouldn’t count my horse as a possession, so perhaps my phone because that’s where the fanfics are.

Since I like both anime art and storytelling, I'm planning to make light novels. Some of them may be short stories, standalone novels, or series. :3 Going to put some of them on Wattpad and Tapas.
I try to balance unique settings with complex characters.
🌊About Me🌊
I've been writing and drawing since I was little. And before I could write, I would tell my mother my story and she'd write it down for me. I've always had a crazy imagination. When I was a tween, I got into anime and manga, so I learned how to draw in that art style.
I am 25, queer-romantic asexual, and feminine-presenting nonbinary. I identify as both a girl and a demi-boy. You can refer to me as she/her, he/him, or they/them. I don't mind. I'm also white and have ADHD, dyspraxia, anxiety, and depression that prevents me from getting a "real" job.
I'm pretty shy and anxious, but once you get to know me, I may say some weird stuff and dad jokes. I'm a big nerd and simp as well.
I am also a Vtuber, but made this alt identity since I didn't think my work would fit that persona.
🌊About My Blog🌊
Here I am going to post about my WIP stories and some of my art. I will also reblog others' art and writing. Many aesthetics, fandoms, and other stuff may be reblogged as well with tags if it inspires my work.
Here I hope to find more creators to connect with and find some epic creations. Feel free to message me if you'd like, though I am kinda shy. :3

Mmmm I'm bored and it's almost 6 am and I cannot sleep.
I'm gonna assign the Empires SMP s2 cast DnD classes for the fun of it.
Joel: He's a Sorcerer for sure, but idk if wild magic or blue draconic bloodline is more fitting. On one hand, he dipped into a magic fountain to become a God which is very wild magic leaning. On the other hand, blue dragon ancestry would give an obvious affinity to lightning, and an excuse for his obsession with gold and the common teal/blue themes of his Stratos builds. You also can get wings. Idk, I like both a lot here.
Fwhip: Have you seen those funky Redstone signs? This little guy is an artificer all the way. After he made that sick mace? I'm gonna say he'd run the battle smith archetype. Idk funny little goblin tinkerer is just fun to me.
Jimmy: Fighter, gunslinger archetype. He's a cowboy, look at him. What else could he possibly be? I know he doesn't have a gun (yet) but I think he deserves it with all the gunpowder. He's also Just Some Guy and sadly fighter is the most Just Some Guy class there is.
Pixlriffs: The archivist artificer subclass was literally made for this man. Tinkering around with insane redstone, litematica, the obsession with the past and knowing things he shouldn't necessarily know, like it's all there. It's perfect for him. I love him.
Sausage: Oath of Devotion paladin, for sure. He's the protector of Sanctuary, it's his duty to protect his friends and his people, to stay true to them no matter what. He will protect his people and those he cares about. Also you literally get access to the spell Sanctuary as part of the extended spell list. Come on.
Scott: Wild magic Sorcerer. If a wizard gives you a glass eye that is SO going to have random magical consequences, and with how often Owen goes between human and Llama I wouldn't be shocked if it was related. They're also charisma casters and look at him. Look at him.
Joey: Gunslinger fighter again but this time with the pirate background specifically. He literally has a gun. What else could he be?
Oli: The man is literally a college of glamor bard. Like this isn't even a question. Come on now.
False: Oh an artificer all the way, look at the steampunk aesthetic going on here. I wanna give her artillerist because she definitely seems like the type to develop a flamethrower, but I think alchemist fits her lore (the whole amnesia potions thing) a bit better. Another one I'm a little torn on.
Gem: What else could she be but a light cleric? She is the princess of the sun and she started a church for the sun. Light cleric. Boom.
Katherine: Definitely barbarian, but the subclass isn't clear. I might need to homebrew a monster hunter subclass here because while that would normally be a ranger thing I guess, this isn't the first time I've wanted to build a monster hunter with a big sword or big axe. For now, I'll say wolf totem warrior.
Shelby: Wild magic Sorcerer with really bad luck who decided to multiclass into the actual alchemist class on the side, but not enough to pick an archetype. Her spells go wrong all the time, often on accident, she doesn't learn from a book, she's having a great time. Sorry you got polymorphed into a frog lol.
Lizzie: Another wild magic sorcerer except she stopped trying after she turned herself into a cat and decided to instead become an arcane trickster rogue. She is not a cat, she prommy. She totally will not steal from you the moment you aren't looking. She enchanted her mask to make her look human. She is human. Worry more about your chests. Don't ask about the amethyst. She has expertise in deception.
