Power Play
He was a limp fish when it came to handshakes. Not a good start. He seemed to know it though. It lessened the blow. He blushed. She curled the sides of her mouth; a signal that she appreciated the blush. “I’m Hunter.” He muttered.
      “Fay.” She responded.
“Nice to meet you, Fay.” He dropped his wilted grasp on her hand. She let her hand fall.
      “You too, Hunter.”
He stared at her blankly for a moment too long to be comfortable. He looked at his toes, “Soooo…..” He dragged out the word as he chewed on the inside of his jaw.
She fought a smirk, enjoying how awkward he seemed. It felt like power that she wasn’t. She was in control because she was comfortable. She liked the realization. He blushed again under her silent gaze. She felt a surge of pride.
“I’m really bad at this.” He muttered. “Like so bad, I’m real close to just leaving you alone.” He turned the deepest shade of red he’d managed so far. “Not that I want to, but a man can only embarrass himself for so long before he dissolves…. Or something.” He smiled in spite of the red splotches on his cheeks and across his neck. All the pride she felt turned into pity.
“Do you want my number, Hunter?” She smiled.
He nodded. “That’s a start, yeah.”
She laughed. “A start?” Her eyes flashed. “And what’s supposed to come after?”
Hunter blinked. “Uhhhh…. A date- coffee? Maybe?” His shoulders came up. He was folding into himself rather than shrugging. His fingers shook as he rubbed across his mouth with his palm.
“What if I don’t like coffee?” She raised an eyebrow.
“Then this isn’t going to work.” He smirked. Her lips parted, telling him the power was slowly shifting. He was gaining on her. He liked the feeling. “Because I take my coffee very seriously.”
She nodded and held out her hand. He frowned at it for a second before he looked back to her eyes. “Phone. Gimme your phone.” She pushed her chin towards him, holding her head higher, trying to regain the high ground.  He pulled it from his pocket and placed it in her palm. “I like coffee,” she pressed the center button. It was locked. She laughed. “Password.” She held it back out to him.
He chewed on his bottom lip, not taking the phone back from her just yet. “0910.” He smirked.
Her eyebrows shot up. “Wow. That’s a power play.” She muttered. “What’s the significance?” She asked as she typed in the code. It unlocked with a click. His background was a picture of a dog. “Its not your birthday.” She glanced back at him, looking him up and down, reveling in the way he almost squirmed. “Unless you’re way younger than I assumed.”
He chuckled. “No. It’s not my birthday.”
She keyed her number. She looked over her entry in his contact list. It wasn’t enough. She wasn’t going to be just a number in his phone. There’s no power in that. She smirked. “So what is it then?” She asked as she pressed the ‘add photo’ icon, holding his phone out in front of her to snap a selfie.
He laughed at her actions, shoving his hands in his front pockets. “When I got my first real job.”
She took more than one photo, finally deciding on a higher angle. “I normally use a filter.” She said honestly.
“You don’t need one.” His lips stretched into the smallest version of a smirk.
      She met his eyes. “Smooth.”
      “Trying.” He said honestly.
She laughed. “So, you’ve given me your phone and I have your password.” She raised an eyebrow and angled away from him slightly, putting the most distance between him and his phone that she could without walking away. “That’s quite a lot of trust you’ve put in my hands, Hunter.” She glanced back at him. His ears were beginning to turn pink another time. She was winning again.
     “Don’t make me regret it.”
“Oh, but that depends.” She winked.
      “On?”
“What you have to hide.” She smiled.
      He laughed. “There ain’t much.”
“But there’s something?” Her eyes flashed.
     “Just work stuff.” He shrugged.
Her lips fell in a pout. “You’re telling me that there aren’t any secrets on this phone?” He shook his head, unblinking. She felt the power shift in his direction again. “No dirty pictures?” He shook his head again. “No embarrassing text messages?” He shook his head a final time. “Nothing?” She whimpered.
“Nothing short of some bad ideas.” He held his hand out.
She sighed and started to hand it back. Her thumb brushed over the screen as she did, causing a random app to open. She blinked and pulled the phone back out of his reach, staring wide-eyed at the screen. “Is that Elton John as in the Elton John?” She gasped at the email she was looking at.
Hunter’s eyes bulged. “Uh… no?” He tried.
“Oh my God.” She blinked. “Who else is on here?”
“That’s the kinda thing you’re not supposed to know just yet.” He squirmed, reaching across her for the phone.
She let him take the phone. “Just yet?” She raised an eyebrow again.
He smiled, sliding the device into his back pocket. “I’d say that’s what a coffee date is for.”
She shook her head. “You win.” She held her hands up in defeat. He said nothing; leveling the playing field for her. “So, lets go for coffee.” She challenged.
He nodded. “I’m supposed to go home and wait a few days before I call you, right?”
“That’s usually how it works, yeah.”
“Well, I’m not usual.” He held his chin higher. “How about we skip the boring part?”
She smiled. “I’ve got no plans right now.”
His smile matched hers. “I know a place. Elton John suggested it.” He winked.
      “You win.”
a/n my baby sister gave me the idea for this one. Or at least the first sentence. It was such a ridiculous sentence that I had to write it. The rest just kinda came out. I hope y’all liked it. If you didn’t- lemme know. If you did- hey thanks m8. feedback and notes are the only reason I even have tumblr. Make it worth it. Kaythanksmateloveyoutoobye
