Friendly Four Concepts
Had a bit of a rough day a little while ago and, to make myself feel better, I started looking through the various designs that people have come up with for the Negaverse versions of Quackerjack, Megavolt, Liquidator, and Bushroot- AKA, the Friendly Four. My favorite versions are the ones by @thefriendlyfour, @kaguyamadoka, and @sandyferal - seriously go check them out, they’re all amazingly talented and creative people!
Unfortunately, I can’t draw like they can, but I like designing outfits and creating characters and writing, so I made some outfits and bios for my own versions of the Friendly Four that I’ll be writing stories for soon. Bios are below the cut, I hope you guys like them.
Megavolt
Tumblr media
Appearance: Being inspired by superheroes in comic books, Megavolt decided he wanted to look like the classic hero that anyone could look up to. The lightning bolts and spark-stars on his outfit are reflective, so they catch the light when he uses his powers. The belt around his waist is actually a cable connected to the large battery in the middle that channels power up through a secret port on his back hidden by his cape (The pockets on the back actually hold his back-up batteries for when his main one needs to recharge). He also wears elbow-length gloves that are the same color as his cape with little metal lightning bolt emblems on the back, wrap-around safety glasses to both protect his eyes from the light he constantly puts off during his attacks as well as to serve as a mask, and blue boots that match the trim of his sleeves with metal plates along the bottoms and the toes. He doesn’t wear any hats or anything, but his powers still make his hair frizzy, so he keeps it cut fairly short so it’s more manageable.
History & Personality: Elmo Sputterspark was very intelligent and always loved inventing things, especially machines that would help the world solve energy and fuel cost-related problems. Similar to the regular universe, a bullying accident with one of his machines gave him amazing electricity-based powers. He spent the day testing out his powers to learn what he could do, when, late at night, he heard screaming coming from the area of the school their prom was being held in. He rushed over and found Negaduck there, terrorizing and attacking their classmates. Elmo fought back to protect them, making sure everyone got away safely. From that moment on, he decided that he wanted to be a hero and fight injustice- especially when it came to tyrants and bullies like Negaduck.
He’s very kind and selfless, often putting the comfort and safety of others far above his own, and enjoys talking about his hobbies and studies for long periods of time with people who are willing to listen. He’s also very cautious with how he uses his powers, both because he doesn’t want to risk draining himself too much and because he is always nervous about hurting someone irreparably (happened early in his hero career and scarred him mentally- does not EVER want to do that again). He does still have memory problems, but he tries to compartmentalize everything in his life into “must remember” “should remember” and “okay not to remember” so that he won’t lose the people and things that are most important to him- namely his three partners.
Inspiration: As a kid, I loved playing with plasma balls. I always thought they were a fun way to learn about electricity and loved the colors. So, I thought it’d be cool to give Megavolt an outfit with plasma-inspired colors and lightning bolt accents.
Quackerjack
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Appearance: While his costume isn’t as puffy as his regular-world counterpart’s, he makes up for it by being even more colorful! Still following a sort of clown-theme, Quackerjack’s shoes and cowl are the same style, but the shoes are pink like his belt (almost making them look like ballet slippers but darker) with a big golden bell on the top of each shoe and his cowl is yellow on his right side and blue on his left (going opposite the colors of the fabric around his waist) and still has one large bell on the end of each side. The metal baseball bat he carries is his signature weapon (though that blue pouch on his belt also holds an impressive arsenal of toys and gadgets that seems almost bottomless sometimes and he hides things like jump ropes and larger weapons under the fabric around his hips), and is painted in a diamond tessellation of his outfit’s colors all the way around. The heart-shaped piece of metal on the bat’s hilt at first looks like a magnet meant to hold the red tail-ribbon in place, but, when pressed, it activates propulsion-rockets hidden within the bat that give him extra speed and force when swinging it. Also, Quackerjack enjoys sewing and added the toy-patches on the back of his shirt himself to cover up the holes in his costume from a fight, and gladly adds patches to his teammates’ outfits when they need a repair job done.
History & Personality: Jackson Bell, CEO and founder of Quackerjack Toys, was a well-respected businessman and beloved figure to many for years- he was a community activist, ran many notable charities, and even helped establish several orphanages and children’s hospitals using the proceeds from his company. Unfortunately, when Negaduck’s rule began, he was one of the prominent figureheads in the city that openly spoke out against him. To get him out of the way, Negaduck struck a deal with one the toy company’s biggest competitors and the two managed to frame the CEO for a crime he didn’t commit, locking him away for years and dissolving his company. Jack went a bit crazy in prison, constantly trying to find the brighter side of things, even when one wasn’t really there. At one point he entered a prison-penpal program and met a girl he became very close to- they even started living together when Jack was released from prison. His then-girlfriend helped Jack get his life back in order and helped him find his confidence and sanity again, inspiring him to go out and help others like she helped him. Unfortunately, some rather dark facts about his girlfriend came to light and the two broke up, but Jack still holds out hope that one day they can work things out and she can find a way to be a part of his life again alongside his three new partners.
There are two sides to the toy-loving ex-businessman. When he wears his cowl and hero outfit, Quackerjack is a bright and bubbly individual that loves making puns and laughing about all sorts of things. Outside of the costume, though, Jack is a surprisingly mellow guy with an almost monotone speech pattern- he’ll still crack jokes, but they’ll be said with more sarcasm and dead-pan humor that’ll often make people do a double-take to make sure they heard him right. Despite the glaring differences in his personality, at his core Quackerjack is a very compassionate person that wants to help anyone that seems frightened, lonely, sad, or lost (in any sense of the word). He’s very open and vocal about his feelings, often wearing his heart on his sleeve to varying degrees depending on what state of mind he’s in at the moment.
Inspiration: I went to an art school from 6th-12th grade where I was a theater and musical theater major. During that time, I studied Commedia dell'arte, an early form of Italian theater, and learned about the Harlequin clown character. I decided to base Quackerjack’s outfit off of the classical theater clown’s bright color scheme and more stream-lined clothing style.
Bushroot
Tumblr media
Appearance: Similar to how his regular-world counterpart fused with a plant, Dr.Reginald Bushroot in this world infused himself with a  Solanum carolinense. The viney nature of the plant gave him a slightly different appearance with thorn-covered vine-arms, three slightly-pointed oblong leaves for each hand (two longer ones and one shorter one to act as a thumb), an upper body covered in fine hairs that make his green torso a bit fuzzier, legs made of woven vine-roots that he can disassemble and reassemble at will to help him climb objects, and a purple flower on his head like the plant he fused with (one large petal curls downward and covers half of his face like a long set of bangs, the back two petals stick up parallel to the top of his head, and the middle two are halfway between the two levels of elevation, along with a few smaller yellow petals that stick straight up to cover the top of his head in the middle of the larger petals). The jacket he wears was actually a gift hand-sewn by Quackerjack- the sleeves have extra-thick padding so Bushroot doesn’t accidentally stab anyone with his arms and the flower-patch sewn into the back was meant to be a parody of the flower on his head. Bushroot won’t say it out loud, but he really loves that jacket and refuses to take it off unless absolutely necessary, so he often wears it completely unbuttoned to stay cool unless he’s trying to blend in with a crowd.
History & Personality: Dr.Reginald Bushroot was a brilliant botanist at the local university, always striving to make the next big discovery that would improve the lives of those around him. Living in a town run by Negaduck, however, made conducting his research even harder legally, and he was forced to quit his job at the institute to avoid getting his coworkers fired as well. With nothing else to lose, Bushroot experimented on himself in a fit of self-destructive behavior and ended up as a plant-duck mutant. He excitedly showed the results of his research to his former coworkers, only for them to sell him out to Negaduck to save their own jobs (and lives). Barely escaping Negaduck’s clutches, Bushroot grew bitter towards humanity and decided to live away from everyone in the solitary safe-haven of his greenhouse on the outskirts of town where he could be hidden away in the woods.
At first glance, Bushroot seems like a cynical nihilist that hates being around people in any capacity. After opening up to Quackerjack and Megavolt, though, it turns out that he’s really just lonely and tired of being emotionally trampled on by society just for trying to be a good person. With their encouragement, he decides to try helping humanity again as part of their team, though he still maintains that he doesn’t really care what happens to the world. He’s actually a pretty big tsundere and has trouble admitting that he likes (or loves) anyone/anything in his life, but his actions always speak louder than his words and he shows he cares for his partners in little ways like making flowers grow around their rooms and bugging them to take care of themselves when they’re working too hard.
Influence: I actually live in the Carolina’s, where solanum carolinense (otherwise known as Carolina Horsenettle) grows and thought it would be a cool plant for Bushroot to fuse with. Those weeds are nightmares to deal with: The thorns hurt like heck to grab, even with gloves, but you NEED the gloves because the toxins in the thorns make the wounds hurt worse and can even get them infected if you’re not careful. They’re also very tough to pull out because of their strong roots and, worst of all, they grow fruit that looks JUST LIKE tomatoes. That last part may not sound so bad, but, down here, wild tomatoes can occasionally sprout up and kids and pets love them as snacks, and Carolina Horesenettles are actually members of the DEADLY NIGHTSHADE family, so their fruit can be LETHAL. It’s a pretty but deadly plant and really quite fascinating to study.
Liquidator
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Appearance: Bud Flood in the negaverse is quite a bit shyer than his regular-world version, so he actually changes the water around his body to look like he’s wearing clothes to feel more confidant. The outfit is similar to what he wore before his mutation, except back then it was black and white with a long-sleeved white shirt beneath the button-up vest and he had shoes instead of a big puddle at the ends of his legs. He can change the hue of his “clothes” by messing with their chemical composition (like how he can turn water hard or move pollutants around in it). The metal accents such as his buttons and belt buckle are actually small bits of ice that he allows to float in place along his body, but he can quickly melt and dissolve them at a moments notice when his body needs to change and reform them instantly when his body returns to its normal state. Also, the bow around his neck is actually a ruffled cravat tied into a bow and the water ripples along it to make little waves at the ends of the bow’s ties.
History & Personality: Along with Jackson Bell, Buddy Flood was one of the other influential figureheads that opposed Negaduck, though he was far less vocal about it. Still, Buddy cared about peoples’ health and well-being and used proceeds from his company to open non-profit free clinics and hospitals as well as soup kitchens for the poor so people could always have access to fresh water and food when they needed it because, sadly, most of the town’s water sources had become polluted, meaning that many people had trouble finding sustenance that wasn’t pre-packaged/bottled. Negaduck grew irritated at Buddy’s continued meddling in his plans to ruin the city so, to get him out of the way, he called in a fake warning that someone was going to poison his company’s water supply. Buddy went with a few guards and officers to investigate, but, when they saw who it was poisoning the water, they all ran away and left Buddy alone. Negaduck caught him and threw him into the contaminated water in hopes of killing him- he even tied weights to his legs to make sure he’d sink. While he didn’t die and instead became a water-based mutant, the incident left Buddy quite scared to face people directly for a while.
Although he is extremely shy and anxious when dealing with other people, Liquidator swallows down his nerves for the sake of helping others in need. As a sort of coping mechanism, Liquidator goes into “salesman mode” when talking to people he doesn’t know or just when he feels nervous in general- by pretending everything he says is for the sake of pitching a sale to someone, Liquidator feels less nervous and is able to get through a sentence without the stuttering that would normally accompany his words. In a way, his manner of speaking serves as a great indicator for how he feels about other people: If he can talk to you like a normal person then he feels comfortable around you, but if he can talk to you like that AND not stutter at all then you’re probably one of his three partners and he loves you with all his heart.
Influence: I honestly just liked the idea of having Liquidator create his own clothes out of water since he seems to know so much about changing its properties and chemical make-up. I feel like in this world, the flow of his water would go upwards from the base of water at his feet rather than the other way around, which is why his pants are darker than his vest- giving him a reverse waterfall effect.

My hopes and dreams may have been dashed by the Jim Carrey who stole Christmas and a Tony the Tiger’s luchador cousin, but we still have DLC to look forward to. Here are my out there and not so out there ideas on who should join the roster in the Smash Pass.
Rules: No echos. The announcement claimed these types of new fighters won’t be a part of the pass. This doesn’t mean a new fighter may not come bundled with an echo of themselves, but these types of fighters won’t be a part of this list.
Also no Assist trophies. As much as I want Spring man and Ribbon girl to punch in I don’t see them replacing or removing an existing assist trophy to add a character in.
Fighter: Banjo & Kazooie
I am still holding onto the dream. The duo of bear and bird are tied to the Nintendo 64 despite no longer being owned by the big N. Phil Spencer is down to get Banjo in the game so the only real question is if Sakurai thinks they are worth adding. As far as Nintendo wanting them, it would only be if some deal was worked out for the N64 classic. I’d assume both announcements would be near one another.
I’ve gone over their endless potential for moves before and that hasn’t changed. Grant Kirkhope killed it on the soundtrack for these games so there are plenty of tracks to choose from. The only real question is what the stage will be. Smash is usually inspired by stages more often than it copies a direct area, so in that regard I think Spiral Mountain would probably make the most sense. I think the Rusty Bucket has a lot of potential as well, but if the idea is to go for something iconic I think you have to go Spiral Mountain.
Fighter: Doom Slayer
Not giving up on this one either. Odds probably aren’t great though. Doom is a very western franchise and not one super linked to Nintendo, and let’s not even get into the violence and religious aspects. The one thing it has going for it is that it is a very important franchise to the history of gaming and Bethesda seems to be on good terms with Nintendo. Doom Eternal is coming to the Nintendo Switch so it could be a cool marketing move to drop this fighter in to build up hype.
Just because he wouldn’t be a Snake echo anymore doesn’t mean he doesn’t have potential. The Doom Marine has plenty of weapons to pull from in his past games and it wouldn’t be too hard to pull some from the upcoming Doom Eternal. I also don’t think it’d be much of a stretch to give the Doom Marine an echo fighter in the form of B.J. Blazkowicz. He is equally important to the history of first person shooters. Doom Marine would certainly get the stage though as Nazi Germany isn’t something I see getting shown off in Smash. A space station on Mars with maybe a transition to hell seems perfect for a stage.
Fighter: Lara Croft
Odds are if we get another Square Enix representative it would be Geno, but Lara Croft is another major gaming icon, just again more western focused. She has appeared on Nintendo consoles so the only issue is coming up with her moves, and I don’t have many ideas for this. Her combat style is very weapons heavy, but she doesn’t have much that would work for close range at least from my experience with the franchise. Like Doom Slayer, I only see Nintendo green lighting this if we are getting some Tomb Raider title on the platform before February 2020.
Stage wise Lara Croft has tons of crazy set pieces to draw from. I assume the stage would be a tomb of some kind with plenty of hazards and maybe even a guest appearance by the iconic T-rex. Lara has plenty of costumes to pull from. If one major thing keeps Lara out it’ll be her moves.
Fighter: Geno
People want Geno. I am not one of those people. I have never played Super Mario RPG, and unless it comes to Nintendo Switch I probably never will. I really have nothing else to say except that I think he is rather likely to be in the game as DLC. Geno could be tied into a remaster or rerelease of the game on Switch, but it is possible Nintendo will just bring him in because fans want him.
Fighter: Shantae
Being a spirt does not preclude one from being a fighter. Despite having yet to review it, I was a backer of Shantae: Half-Genie Hero despite having zero history with the franchise. Shantae has history with Nintendo. Debuting on the Gameboy Color Shantae is a mix of traditional platforming and some metroidvania mechanics. Now I’m sure plenty of people would be pissed if she got in over Shovel Knight, but I think she has a lot more to offer.
For one thing we don’t have another fighter who uses their hair. That alone will give her some interesting standard attacks. She also has a plethora of magic and transformations that could make for an interesting set of special and smash attacks. As far as a stage goes I think the central town would be the best representation of the series as a whole. Maybe have part of the stage feature a dock so that Risky Boots can dock.
The music in the latest game is fantastic. You could bring everything over unchanged and it’d fit in. Every track has a beat that makes you want to get up and dance while still getting across the mood. Overall I don’t think Shantae’s chances are great. Mostly because she is an indie character and she’d be pretty obscure for Nintendo to pick for one of five DLC fighters. Let’s just say I’m not holding my breath on this one.
Fighter: Dixie (& Kiddy?) Kong
Another much more likely fighter with a ponytail. I have not played a Donkey Kong game featuring Dixie. I also don’t like the Donkey Kong Country games, though I do like DK64. That all being said I understand people want Dixie in. She is one of two playable characters in DKC2 which is regarded as the best of the trilogy.
Now why did I say Dixie and Kiddy? Well I think there is potential to make Dixie unique by having her nephew help out in some way. One thing that neither DK nor Diddy get across is the weird health system of the old games. If a Kong is hit you switch to the other one who was running alongside. I think using that relationship between the two could make Dixie really stand out. That being said I could also see her coming in on her own. Potential have it be a Zelda/Sheik style swap.
Now I also think there is echo potential with Tiny and Chunky, though I think it’d be more likely to have s singular Dixie have Tiny as an echo than getting all four. Dixie’s single ponytail versus Tiny’s two could change the range and speed. People talk about Tiny as Dixie’s replacement so I don’t think it’s a stretch. I have no idea what sort of announcement this could tie into. Maybe another DKC game or a DK64 remaster.
Fighter: Gen 3, 5, or 8 Pokémon
I expect this would be a gen 8 Pokémon over a gen 3 or 5 one if only because outside gen 1 additions new fighters have been from the latest generation. Melee added Mewtwo and Pichu. Brawl added Pokémon trainer and Lucario. 4 added Greninja and Ultimate is adding Incenaroar. Who knows what Pokémon it’ll be, but I’m for a grass type.
If we do roll back to gen 3 I’d hope for Sceptile or Grovyle. We need a fully evolved Grass starter in the battle. As far as gen 5 goes Emolga would be a third electric type but it’d be interesting to have in there with its flight and thunder. Outside that maybe Krookodile. I’d also not be opposed to a new Pokémon Trainer as long as the Fire starter isn’t the third stage. Ideally it’d be Tepig, Dewott, Serpirior or any combination if the Hoenn starters without Blaziken.
If the stage is gen 8 I don’t know where it’d be obviously. As for gen 3 the Sky Pillar could work, but I would not be opposed to a plethora of locals. Fortree city, and Mt. Chimney come to mind. I think Shoal cave could be interesting using the games internal clock to change the stage with the tide. Gen 5 I’m not picky. Mostly because I hated gen 5 and forget almost everything about it.
Fighter: Fire Emblem: Three Houses character
I actively do not want this, but knowing Sakurai it’s possible that we will see another anime sword boy or girl. With Nintendo selecting odds are lowered, but it is still a possibility.
Fighter: Tetris Block
Yes I watch GameXplain. I think this might be a bit far outside the box for Nintendo to pick, but if a Gameboy Classic is in the works this is some easy cross promotion with the system’s killer app. Music is obvious. Having the stage be a game of Tetris seems to be obvious. If the Tetris block is a fighter the stage would need a different art style than the character. Don’t ask me how it’d fight. Only Sakurai truly knows.
Fighter: Steve & Alex (Minecraft)
Most people know Steve’s name, but less know Alex. This is again Microsoft owned, and outside getting representation from the second bestselling game of all time, I don’t know what would compel Nintendo to select them as fighters. Stage wise the possibilities are endless. In a world of blocks and biomes it is hard to pick just one. I could see a stage divided into multiple areas like Delfino Plaza. I could also see a destructible stage that rebuilds like Luigi’s Mansion, though maybe not always the same way.
Move wise the two have a lot of tools, potions, and blocks to pull from. If a Creeper doesn’t show up here or as a stage hazard, than it needs to be an assist trophy. Music may be an issue. The music doesn’t seem like it’d transition well to battle music.
Fighter: Tails
I have never owned a Sonic game. I am not a Sonic fan. That being said with Shadow out of the picture I think Tails could be a great addition. From what I know of the character he seems to be more about verticality than speed. He also has gadgets that could make up his final smash.
As for a new stage maybe pull something from Mania or Forces. I assume most of the music is already going to be in the game so that might be an issue.

Allen’s Rambling XXXI: Creating the Demon Knight
I’ve been meaning to write a Munday Rambling for awhile, but I never knew what to write about. I tend to keep most Ramblings that focused on me personally and my interests outside of RPing to my personal blog, but I figured out what I wanted to talk about for Munday. Not so much about myself, but about Claudia and what inspired me to make her the way she is. Her inspirations, her origins, stuff like that. I guess this is a sort of “behind the scenes” Rambling in a way. And in the spirit of Munday, I’ll do this Rambling in the style of how I do them on my personal blog, with proper headers and my semi-sarcastic commentary.
Claudia’s Origins
So, fun fact, Claudia is actually is a reboot of an ancient OC I made about 11 years ago when I was in middle school named Clayton Ivanly. Clayton was the original Demon Knight. He was 13-years-old, shy, talked with a stutter, but possessed a demon sword that gave him a more confident personality and lightning powers when in combat. His story goes a bit further than that, but then I’d have to explain the Ivanly family and... trust me, you don’t want me to explain the complicated, 90s anime-inspired background of an OC I made when I was 12. Long story short, inter-dimensional travel is a bitch, angels are attractive to shy boys, and older brothers are make everything worse.
Claudia... obviously has none of those things attached to her, but a few things stuck. The main reason Claudia’s theme color is purple as a callback to Clayton, but I might change that to light blue for... obvious reasons. Claudia possessing a demonic weapon is also a callback to Clayton as well, though that came a little later. If anything, Claudia is more a foil to Clayton. Where Clayton was a very feminine boy with confidence issues, Claudia is a very tomboyish girl with an cocky streak. Where Clayton hated combat and needed a demon sword to force him to defend himself, Claudia loves it and uses her demon spear to increase her kill count. The list goes on, but you get the idea.
Also, Claudia has a realistic last name. Actually, her last name was originally suppose to be Ivoire, the French word for Ivory. But I misspelled it and by the time I realized it, it was too late...oops.
Inspirations
Like I said, Claudia is a re-imagined version of Clayton, but I took a few inspirations from other anime and video games when crafting and forming her. Namely the Blood Knight trope, fight obsessed characters like Judith from Tales of Vesperia and Reina from Fire Emblem Fates, characters that are usually polite and reserved until they start drawing blood.
I think I also need to give a special shoutout to Cecily Campbell of The Scared Blacksmith as well. This is one of my favorite manga series yet, I have the entire series on my bookshelf in fact. I usually try not to make my OCs too much like their Faceclaims, but I’d be lying if I didn’t admit Claudia had at least 30% of Cecily’s personality. Her straightforward nature, her willingness to speak out and face people and beings far above her in rank and skill, her short temper, her background, her tolerance to alcohol. Also... Cecily’s an idiot, and so is Claudia, and both are willing to admit that when asked. I call Claudia a dumb, violent lesbian for a reason after all. The biggest things keeping Clauds from being a straight up Cecily-clone is that she’s gay and uses a spear instead of a sword.
Why a Knight?
I’ve been wanting to try my hand at knight-like character ever since I had to do a research paper on them a few years ago back in college. I was comparing samurai and knights and trying to find major differences and similarities with them. Thoughout my research I learned that knights and samurai were similar in the sense that a lot of the romanticizing surrounding them was played up to all hell. Knights were less of the noble and chivalrous warriors of God, and more like long term mercenaries with a bit of noble blood. Claudia is my take on what I think a knight at that time would be like, namely a lower ranking one. The reason I had her of low rank was to give her an excuse to travel around and find people to service under for the sake of improving standing. Honestly, I might have to be a knight to some fictional country of some sort that’s always warring with other states and countries for the sake of plot, but... eh, I’m still debating it for now.
Why is Claudia so Violent?
Well... for self-indulgent reasons. I like cute girls that fight, punch, and stab people, so I made a cute girl that likes to fight, punch, and stab people. It’s that simple really.
Well, there’s a bit more to it than self-indulgence. I’ve said before that fight RPs are my favorite types of RPs to do, and I’d like to go into detail as to why that is at a later time, but just know that most of my muses tend to be physical fighters because of it, Claudia being no different.
Why is Claudia a Lesbian?
Because Allen is a yuri fanboy with zero shame in admitting it.
...
...
...
Well, in all seriousness I made Claudia a lesbian on a whim. It was more of a “why not” kind of moment. Plus, it’s got the advantage of every male muse not coming at her with the intent to bang her since she’s not into dudes, which is a huge plus for me since I don’t really care for writing neither romance or sexual stuff. Any romance happening is mostly because of character development.
And... that’s really it in terms of Clauds’s origins and development. Nothing more I have to say about it. I’ve had this blog for about a year or so now and I’m glad I made it. It’s been a blast writing for her and hope it continues. So yeah, if you guys wanna’ know more feel free to ask me about this crazy demon knight. Also, since it’s munday, here’s a link to my personal blog. Feel free to follow me there if you just wanna’ see my non-rp ramblings, drawings outside of Claudia, and general sarcastic shitposting about the fandoms I’m in.
Anyway, happy munday everyone!

Fire Emblem Heroes Unit Review: Soren
“Not that it's anyone's business, but in my world, I'm among those called the Branded. That means I was condemned more or less at birth to be hated and shunned. So, there it is.”
Tumblr media
Available: 4-5 Star
Neutral Stats as 5-Star: 36/33/33/17/29 (Best IV’s: +Attack, Speed, or +Resistance; Defense is safe to drop)
Default Kit:
Rexcalibur+ (13 Might) Fully unlocked at 5-Star
Special: Growing Wind (Before combat this unit initiates, foes in a wide area around target take damage equal to [unit’s Attack minus foe’s Defense/Resistance]) Fully unlocked at 4-Star. Cooldown: 5 Turns
B-Slot: Watersweep 3 (If unit initiates attack, no follow-up occurs. Against foe with magic, staff, or dragonstone, if unit’s Speed minus foe’s Speed is greater than/equal to 1, foe can’t counterattack.) Fully unlocked at 5-Star.
C-Slot: Fortify Resistance 3 (Grants adjacent allies Resistance +4 through their next actions at the start of each turn) Fully unlocked at 5-Star
Pros:
Great Attack and Speed
Attack shared by Nino
Great Resistance to take blue units
Bulkier than Nino in terms of HP and Resistance
Very versatile in any set he gets (-Blade, -Raven, -Wolf, his default tome)
Best boyfriend for Ike
Cons:
Worse defense than Nino
Needs investment to be great
Outclassed by better green mages (Nino, Julia)
In honor of Ike being part of Hero Fest 2, I thought it would great to do a unit review about Ike’s boyfriend tactician: Soren! I’d expect him to show up if there were more Tellius characters, mainly with Ike.
Now that Soren is here, he’s placed in-between Nino and Julia; two popular green mages in the current game. That doesn’t mean Soren is terrible. He’s still a great green mage.
He’s the first character with Rexcalibur+ since no other green mage has it. It’s a decent weapon if you want to make some sets that still features this as it has the same might as the -Blade tomes. Fortify Resistance 3 is a great C-Slot Skill as there’s a bunch of popular magic users running havoc in Arena, so giving extra Resistance to others is always nice. And Soren is the only unit to have Watersweep 3. It works similarly to Alm’s Windsweep 3, but only for magic. It’s an okay skill on Soren since he does have good speed, but there are other skills that Soren really wants on the B-Slot. Growing Wind is an Area of Effect skill, so he deals damage to enemies before he starts the attack. Pretty cool, but it takes so long to charge up and by the time it’s ready, the battle is already over...
Skill Inheritance gives Soren some new stuff to play with. Mainly, his weapon can be replaced with a better one. -Raven and -Blade tomes are among the most popular ones to build with Soren as he has the power to do it, and can take magic hits from blues better than Nino. A-Slot grants him Darting/Death Blow 3, Triangle Adept 3 to murder the ever growing blue-mages and lance units much faster. B-Slot can be easily replaced with a -breaker skill or Desperation 3 if he wants to try the -Blade build (but that’s not necessary at times). His special can easily be replaced with Iceberg, Moonbow, or if you want to fit the theme, Draconic Aura as it boosts his attack and he’s actually half-dragon. The more you know.
But Ike’s trusted strategist has some problems. Firstly, while he does have better Resistance and HP than Nino, he has terrible defense, standing in at only 17 if neutral. So him getting near a sword unit spells out death for him. Speaking of Nino, he is severely outclassed by her as she can do the -Blade build a lot better due to having more speed than him. Along with that, his best builds require some expensive stuff, most of which are locked to five-stars! Doing the -Blade build without the +version is fine as -Blade tomes are crazy with buffs, but the-Raven (and to an extent -Wolf tomes) need the 5-star version, or it won’t work very well.
Despite this, Soren is a very flexible unit on any team if you want to try another green mage not named Nino or Julia. He doesn’t have crazy speed like Nino, or crazy Resistance like Julia, but he’s there to make sure victory is one step closer to us, and one step behind for the enemy. And fight alongside his boyfriend as well.
