The Algorithm is AI Art

Last year, I used DALL-E to create a series of images for a digital tarot card deck I was making for my personal use. When I shared some of those images here on my blog, I got a massive amount of push back and even threats in my inbox. I'm still putting my thoughts together on that experience but it did make me realize that most people don't seem to realize they're supporting the AI art they hate so much - to the tune of millions and even billions of dollars per year depending on the platform - almost everyday through the algorithms they use.

So if you genuinely hate AI art, I'm here to tell you that you've got to do what you can to get rid of and not use the algorithms in your life. That kind of support is more materially complicit with AI's intrusion on art than someone making a few images for themself ever could be.

Yes It's Possible

For many platforms, especially when they're accessed on desktop, it is possible to greatly reduce your contact with the algorithm. I use browser extensions to cut out the AI curated feeds on YouTube, Facebook, and Reddit. I mostly use Instagram on desktop to answer messages.

I generally do not use Instagram, Facebook, and other apps that do not allow users to control their feed on mobile. I know Instagram is mobile only - when I use it on mobile, I download it, upload what I want, then delete the app again.

I am considering cutting these out entirely again once this phase of my experiment for a zine I'm writing is over because honestly, they're not worth it, but that's a different post...

I also really recommend either making a separate email account or getting ruthlessly organized in your current one, so that you can sign up for artist's newsletters and other forms of human centered curation. RSS readers like Feedly can also be a good alternative.

The point here isn't perfection - the point is doing what you can. Not because it will change companies - but because it's better for you and the artists you care about.

Why?

Algorithms in these spaces determine who's work gets shown and more importantly - who gets paid enough to continue making their art.

AI has consistently been shown to reproduce and even exaggerate biases already present in society. This video by Ann Reardon of How to Cook That talks about YouTube's lack of transparency about the potential for a sexist bias in YouTube's algorithm and shows that in the top views at least, there's a clear slant toward male creators. The only woman in the top 10 does not show her face in her videos - unlike most of the men in the top 10. This discrepancy is even larger the further down the list you go.

Who gets shown is who gets paid enough to keep making their content/art. Less pay means people can afford to put out less content/art and can't scale - meaning less diversity in content/art.

What art gets shown influences what inspires new art and content to be made. You are seeing art directly shaped by AI everyday - and more than that - by continuing to click on what it serves up to you, you support it.

This AI influence on real world art has become so normalized that people consider it as natural a force of nature as wind. It's not. This was designed - and it can be redesigned.

I want to be careful not to overstate the influence of a click either - your clicking on something you choose is not a form of activism. Your clicks cannot retrain the algorithm at scale. A lot of people have the misconception that you can train "your" algorithm but what the algorithm on your feeds is doing is actually comparing your clicks to it's database of similar user profiles and their behaviors to decide what to suggest to you. Your clicks don't retrain the AI as a whole, they just match you with a different user type.

The real reason I think those concerned about AI in art need to find ways to take control of their feeds is because it ensures you're able to support a diverse array of creators through your views and it ensures that what you're taking your inspiration from isn't what the AI decides is worthy of attention.

I realize there are those who are reading this who either might not have been old enough to remember or even weren't born when YouTube basically took your Subscriptions off the front page. It used to be they would pop up at the top of the front page. Then it got knocked down on the front page. When it got shoved into it's own sidebar link and then that link progressively minimized through redesigns - there was actually an outcry about it.

People warned that this would lead to a watering down effect, where smaller channels didn't get the chance to grow like already established ones would. Creators of marginalized identities saw their views drop dramatically. Similar things happened when Facebook and Instagram fully took away a user's ability to have a chronological feed (this was possible in the early days). I know of more than a few creators who fully had to step away from their work because of the change over. I miss their art.

And then the outcry petered out. The companies didn't lose users over it so nothing changed. Eventually people got used to it and the protests went away. These companies now know they're "too big to fail" and can ignore user outcry until people acclimate the new normal that serves them. This normal serves them because it does actually increase engagement and keeps you on the platform for longer - which means less time spent on your own creative activities, yet another way they impact what art gets made.

TL;DR: if you hate AI's impact on artists and their employment opportunities, take control of your feeds. Make your own. Choose what you click. Take back your time and make more art.

Hello pile 1, I got two different messages for two types of people. For the first one, I am made to believe that recently you have been having issues with someone. It could be family, friend or love related. The nature communication card is the one card that sticks out the most outta every other card, and that matters because the card goes and talks about when Alice from Alice in the Wonderland goes and talks to these beautiful, and quite harsh judgmental flowers. She does not expect for them to talk back to her, but they do, she had made a false assumption about the world she has found herself trapped in. Overall, I can see that you have been having issues and you may need to speak up for yourself. As for a while you have been trying to please someone and because of that you seem to have been someone who doesn’t really know who you are or feel like you can’t be who want to be because of these issues you have with this other person. You want this person to stay with you and love you but deep down you know that you haven’t seen any hope outta the other person. Your message is that you need to speak up for yourself, you are someone who is worthy of making an effort with. Not saying to leave whatever person you have issues with, because the other person may or may not know there even is an issue. Don’t focus on the possibility of you hurting other people's feelings, speak your mind and if shit hits the fan, seek comfort with your loved ones because you have people around you that care for you.

And for the second one, I am getting that if you’re the one who has been creating issues with someone else that you love. You know deep down that you were being way too overwhelmingly judgmental and now you may not know what to do. As you can see that you made yourself look like someone else who isn’t a good representation of you. This person may have stood up for themselves and now you feel like you have fucked up. If you feel as though you have fucked up, your message is to apologize. It should be noted that just because you apologize to someone you have hurt does not erase the pain you have caused. An apology should be told to the person only if you mean it and are willing to work on fixing the issue at hand.

Good day/evening/night Pile 2, I can see that it feels as though you aren't overcoming life's obstacles thrown at you. You may also not even be aware that you are stuck in a place when you don’t have to be. You are clearly off balance and there a lot of feeling stuck energy here. However, you should understand that feelings are fleeting, even if you have been feeling stuck, unmotivated and/or depressed seemingly forever, that doesn't mean that you have to stay like that. The cards are all telling you that you need to figure out how to get out of your stagnation. You need to drop something that you are doing in order to overcome this period. And I feel as though, that perhaps you are almost unwilling to try to overcome it because you may have tried before and/or feel that you just are to afraid to ask for help from others. You may feel like you may not be able to overcome hardships on your own but also fear asking for help or that you won’t get help even if you asked so what’s the point. But here’s the thing, it doesn't hurt to ask, what’s the worst thing that could happen? And if you don’t need help, ask yourself what you need to do in order to become more stable and structured enough to the point where you are able to not become stagnant, when life gets hard. It could be that you also may be relying too much on the help of others too and that isn’t healthy in the same way not being able to ask for help is. If you need the extra help, ask for it but if you also need others to help you, codependency on others is an issue that keeps you stuck. That reason being that if there isn’t someone to cling to or point out your short comings, you may not know what to do when there isn't someone there. At some point you will be all you have, (and no I am not saying you will be alone forever) so make sure that you are able to get to the point where you will be okay when that happens. Ask yourself, what's stopping me? How can I overcome that? What makes me more balanced? What caused me to become outta balanced and how do I prevent that from happening?

Side note, it takes a long time for someone to realize that they are unhappy and even longer for that person to realize that they don’t have to be unhappy. So, by no means should you feel like you are being judged, it happens to a lot of people.

Hi pile three, so I am being told to tell you that there might be something like a blessing coming towards you. While with tarot cards i don’t necessarily predict the future, they help guide and lead you, but my cards are telling me that there’s a good chance of you getting something that you want, but you have to behave. Kinda like let's say you want to be to afford an expensive piece of clothing, if you want to properly save up for it, you would have to look at your monthly income, differentiate your needs and wants so that you will be able to single out how much you would need to cut out and put away into savings until you can afford to get that desired item. Hello Pile Four, First things first, everything came in reversed which tells me that there’s something that you are struggling with mentally speaking. However, given the positions where the cards have fallen into, the 9oC in the middle and the others being the knight and queen of pentacles on the side of it, I am being led to believe that you are stopping yourself in enjoying fruits of your labor for the long run. Yes, you are being fulfilled with very expensive items/activities recently but if you know you aren’t monitoring your spending, and budgeting within your sustainable budget, you are going to fuck yourself over. If you are too young to have to worry about focusing on spending habits for comfortable living, then the message you need to hear is to not bite from the hand that feeds you. You may or may not be aware that your entitled actions are going to get you cut off from whoever is helping you out financially. Don’t do use any issues you struggle with to use as a scapegoat. Even if you are aware, you are mentally ill, that’s not a cute quirky reason to treat others like shit, get help.

For those of you who are just struggling to budget and be responsible, your gonna have to just walk away from whatever it is that you truly don’t need. Anything that is considered a luxury item is not a need. Also try not to rely too heavily on the help of others just so you can maintain the life you currently have. And mind you, even if you aren’t buying designer clothes or buying from some expensive ass store like Sprouts. Something like having children or pets is also something that are luxurious and isn't commonly recognized as such. Not saying if you’re broke you can’t afford to have nice things but if you know you don't have enough to support yourself don’t bring another life into that poverty as well, obviously nuance is important so sometimes you gotta make the best out of the worst but if your actively seeking for something you can’t afford you're going to bite yourself in the ass or/and hurt others unintentionally. Motivate yourself by imagining your current stable life being ripped away from you. Use that as inspiration to get your shit together and build healthy spending habits.

hello!! if you don't mind me asking, what was your professional art journey like? (esp the earlier years) was MonsterPop! your first big project online? were you still taking client work when you opened up your shop? you're a very inspiring artist and I hope to be in a similar position as you one day! thank you so much for your time!

oh boy this is a doozy! and also a lot of this involves devin bc our success is completely intertwined

i went to art school (MCAD) from 2009-2013. i majored in comic art but had a secondary unofficial focus in illustration, specifically product design, and i interned at paper bicycle (the company of my product design teacher) my senior year, the same year they opened up light grey art lab. i mailed out a LOT of tarot decks. they didn't have a label printer so this took forever.

during that time i took some freelance illustration and comic gigs and also created some comics that got an amount of traction online (mostly on tumblr but i also got an io9 article written about me iirc). i also started making monsterpop (in 2012 i think?).

in 2012 i ran my first kickstarter to crowdfund an anthology of some of my short comics (how to be a mermaid, the little robot girl, fairyfail) and got my first taste of proper self publishing. sadly this was before i created redden (which was my senior thesis comic) so it wasn't included. i didn't have label printer so mailing out the books (i think i sold around 200) took forever and i ended up throwing a pizza party with my friends and having them help me.

after graduating i moved to the LA area in search of work. it honestly sucked ass and most things didn't pan out but eventually (2014) i got a remote job contracting for gaiaonline and i moved right back to minnesota bc i absolutely hated LA.

i met devin (my wife) 20 days after moving back to minneapolis. in 2015 i ran a kickstarter to fund printing the first volume of monsterpop and people bought almost 400 books. it was insane. i was dying under the stress of trying to mail it all out those packages and didn't own a label printer yet. between having to hand write the addresses, being both dyslexic AND slow, and getting headaches from the fumes, i could send out a max of like 10 packages a day. once again i was planning to throw another pizza party to have my friends help me out, but devin swooped in and got 100 packages done in just a couple hours and when i tell you that no one has ever done anything sexier for me in my life, i truly mean it.

at the time devin and i were both broke living paycheck to paycheck. gaia didn't pay well and the patreon money i got helped, but wasn't that much. i took some freelance/commissions and got some store and convention sales, but i was making around 22-26k and was constantly overworked. devin was in significant credit card debt and was barely scraping by between managing a gas station and school. i started making my very first skirts and then at the end of 2015 my arm, the thing that made me what little money i did make, gave out.

i couldn't draw anymore. this could have literally ended my art career, but instead devin stepped up. they took a look at all the things i was already selling in my store and figured out a way to repackage/bundle the items together in a way that was fun and appealing. and people actually bought the bundles! at that point the vast majority of my sales were at conventions and i wasn't very good at selling online, but that was the beginning of a new era. devin started working with me part time to manage the online store and go with me to conventions and things started getting better. at some point during this saga we finally bought a goddamn label printer.

by 2017 devin started working with me full time. we also got married and moved across the country to upstate NY. in 2018 we got a CPA and became an SCORP and monsterpop became a finalist for the prism comics award, which scored me an invite as a guest at SDCC. i really wish i had enjoyed that experience, but unfortunately i was dealing with some Bad Medication Issues and was extremely sick the whole weekend. otherwise it was great tho and devin had enough fun for the both of us. this is also around when i officially stopped taking freelance work. prior to that i'd only been taking a couple jobs a year, but the store was finally making enough that i could stop.

in 2019 i made the difficult decision to end monsterpop. this came with a lot of heartache but it was the right thing to do. i am much better now for it. i think 2019 is also when we became an SCORP.

we hired our first employee (lindsy) in, i think 2021. it might have been the end of 2020. and in 2022 we hired our second employee (ariel), who had been modeling for us already for a couple years bc she is our very close friend and actually the reason we moved out to NY in the first place. in late 2022 we started working with ash, who now manages our product supply chain and also is patterning new garments for us.

there's probably a bunch of stuff i've missed but this is roughly it! neither devin nor i were able to succeed until we started working together. our strengths and weaknesses complimented each other well and somehow things just worked out.

Tarot and Symbolism in the Walpurgis no Kaiten trailer

The most interesting moments in the Walpurgis no Kaiten trailer are unlikely to be in the final film. There are three of them, all in quick succession during the grayscale "flashback" sequence explaining How We Got Here.

At first glance, this is fairly straightforward--a clip from the original series, with the characters for "calamity" (災厄) reflected backwards. I don't know if this phrase ever comes up in the original series, but in at least one interview, Gen Urobuchi says Walpurgisnacht is "perceived as a calamity", which I have always thought was a striking way of putting it. (Is it possible to perceive her in ways that are not a calamity??)

Note that Urobuchi uses "災害" for "calamity" instead of "災厄" - both phrases mean the same thing, but my dictionary tells me that not only can 災厄 also be written 厄災, but that 厄 can mean either misfortune or an especially unlucky year. So that got my attention.

Even if I hadn't seen the key visual with two Homuras (or Homura and someone else wearing her face), it's abundantly clear from this shot alone that mirrors, reflections, and reversals are going to be a major theme.

The next shot follows immediately on the heels of the first, showing a clip of Homura from Rebellion:

Once again, we have the backwards text, this time reading 回い続ける, or "to spin in a circle". This is appropriate, given the nature of Homura's loops, but the same phrase also appears in the text of Walpurgisnacht's witch card, where she is "the fool that spins in a circle" -- 回い続ける愚者. And speaking of 愚者...

.... gues which character is plastered across Devil!Homura's face--not only backwards, but upside down??

This, to me, is the most important shot in the trailer, the one where SHAFT is tipping their hand, but to explain why, we need to talk about the meaning of 愚者. It doesn't simply mean "fool" as in a person of little intelligence--it also means the archetypal Fool, i.e., the Tarot card The Fool.

For those unfamiliar with Tarot, it is one of the ancestors of modern European playing cards--versions of it are still used in Europe for gaming, but it is most famous as tool for divination. Like a modern deck, the Tarot has 4 suits from 1-10 (wands/staves, cups, swords, and pentacles/coins) as well as face cards (page, knight, queen, king), but it also has a series of cards known collectively as the Major Arcana, which run in a series with higher cards taking lower cards in a game.

The Fool is the first card of the Major Arcana, although typically it is not assigned a number (and if it is, the number is zero). Depending on how you play, it is either the lowest or highest card in the Major Arcana, just like the modern Joker, with which it shares a common ancestor. It's literally a wild card.

From an esoteric standpoint, the Major Arcana is seen as an allegorical quest known as the Fool's Journey, an endless cycle of self-discovery culminating in the Last Judgement and the perfection of The World, before starting over anew… all of which fits with Homura's arc. In divination, The Fool represents starting out on a journey, a carefree and simplistic innocence, and is depicted as a handsome young man on the road, blissfully ignorant as he strolls right off the edge of a cliff.

However, the meaning of Tarot cards changes depending on their orientation in space--a process known as "reversal," as this upside-down meaning is usually the exact opposite of their normal "upright" reading. So the Fool reversed is carelessness, vanity, over-the-top dramatics--a perfect description of Walpurgisnacht (who, as I've said, has earlier been described as The Fool) as well as Devil!Homura.

(As a bonus, Walpurgisnacht as The Fool also helps to explain her circus/performance motif, as fools were historically bards, entertainers… or clowns.)

All three of these shots are literally "blink and you'll miss 'em" fast--the only reason I picked up on them was because I was taking screenshots. However, as I've said before, I think they go a long way towards explaining the overall themes and symbolism of the movie despite likely not appearing in the film itself.

That is, of course, not the only Tarot reference in the trailer: "The Moon" also makes an overt appearance in Homura's sanctum early on.

The moon itself is a source of constant change, so the fact that Homura has placed a pin in it--literally stopping time--is unsurprising. Given that butterflies represent souls in Japanese culture, the pinned butterflies in the background are also evocative, especially if Homura has taken on Kyubey's role as a contractor, as seems likely from context.

Meanwhile, The Moon card in Tarot represents the deep unconscious and secrets brought to light. Things are not what they appear to be, and you must trust your instincts to see past the illusion. But is Homura really listening, or will her overconfidence cause her to misstep at a critical moment?

Given these Tarot references in the trailer, I expect we will see more in the full movie. The most obvious, of course, is The Devil, but I am more interested in the card the card immediately AFTER The Devil--The Tower, which depicts a tower being struck by lightning, and represents sudden calamity and irrevocable change. And guess what we see in the final shots of the trailer?

…let's just say I will be very surprised if Homura's tower survives the film intact.

I'm glad you like my other work! Honestly astrowitch is one of my favorite ships in the game hdjdhaj I love them. I don't know if I have anymore headcannons that I haven't already said so I wrote a small fic instead, I hope you like it :)

The room Horizon sat in smelled heavily of incense and herbs. There were many plants lining the window sills and pretty much every other surface in the room. The space was comfortable, it felt welcoming and friendly.

Across the table in front of her sat Catalyst, looking ethereal like always. She was wearing comfortable clothes, a knit sweater and some sweatpants. She held a deck of tarot cards in her hands, shuffling them expertly. Ah, yes. They were having their weekly tea date. Catalyst had offered to give Horizon a tarot reading, since she seemed more spaced out than usual.

"Just think about what's been troubling you. It could be in the form of a question, or not." Catalyst's voice cut through the silent room, it was smooth. Horizon closed her eyes and thought about it. The room fell into comfortable silence again other than the sound of cards being shuffled and placed on the table. "Okay, open your eyes. Let me see what the cards have to say."

Horizon sipped her tea, tasting like lemon and lavender, and watched her girlfriend flip over the cards. Her fingers were entrancing, the way they moved without stutter or hesitation. She always seemed so confident in her actions. Horizon couldn't help but be amazed.

"The empress, reversed... Five of cups... The sun, reversed... oh Mary, you poor thing." Catalyst's expression changed, and she looked at Horizon in worry. It was obvious the cards weren't saying anything good.

"You're gonna have to tell me what they mean, Tressa. I'm not a mind reader." Horizon joked, trying to cover up her nervousness at the situation. She hated being vulnerable. She was supposed to be the one to comfort others, so when the situation flipped around on her it made her feel weak and scared.

To distract her from her discomfort, Horizon focused on the drawings that adorned the cards. They were hand drawn, all signed with a small star and moon in the bottom corner. Catalyst had made them recently and insisted on giving every legend a tarot reading to break them in. Every reading so far had been pretty positive, singing praise of strength and intelligence. This was the first time Horizon had seen Catalyst so troubled by the cards.

"Are you sure you want to hear it? I'm afraid it will be quite harsh."

"I'm stronger than you think, dear. I can take whatever this deck of cards will tell me." Horizon faked a smile and gestured for the other to go ahead with the reading. Still, Catalyst hesitated for a second.

"Okay," Catalyst sighed. "I just want you to know that I'm here for you."

The Empress is often a sing of fertility and femininity. When reversed, it signifies an emptiness within a person or that insecurities are showing. It can also signify a lack of progress.

"I feel like, maybe you are struggling to heal from a trauma that happened in your life. You miss something, it's making you feel empty, and you haven't been able to accept that it will never come back."

Horizon stared straight at the card, not wanting to see the pity that she could tell was in Catalyst's gaze. She didn't agree nor disagree with the statement, she couldn't bear to lie, but she couldn't admit her struggle either. So she chose to sit in silence and let her girlfriend move on to the next card.

The five of cups is a symbol of negative feelings, and often even just the sight of it makes a person feel discontent. They may be feeling disappointment or like they've been let down by someone close to them. It is also often associated with loss, grief, and mourning.

"You're grieving for someone... or something." Horizon could tell that Catalyst knew exactly who she was grieving for. "You're mourning something that you've lost. This can be the same thing that caused that sense of emptiness."

This time, Catalyst reached over to take Horizon's hand once she was done talking. She rubbed her thumb soothingly over her girlfriend's knuckles, and suddenly Horizon was aware of how her hands looked in comparison to the younger woman's. Horizon wasn't old, but she definitely wasn't young either.

She didn't understand how Catalyst was so okay with dating someone so much older than her. Sure, the age gap wasn't even ten years, but most people felt weird about the whole "lost in a blackhole for 87 years" thing. Catalyst didn't seem to mind though, in fact, she thought it was super interesting how space worked.

"Let's get through the last card. Is that okay, Mary?"

Horizon just nodded, finding that she was too choked up to speak.

The Sun represents joy, happiness, confidence, and success. Somewhat obviously The Sun reversed is a symbol of depression, pessimism, and overall negativity. This may be something bad that has happened to a person, causing them to feel negative, or it can also be a sign that you are being too unrealistic and need to ground yourself.

"The last card is telling me that the cause of your emptiness, your trauma, is preventing you from continuing on in your life. You can't do certain things that you'd like to because of this negativity bearing down on you." Catalyst looked up when she finished talking while Horizon continued to stare at the cards. "Mary... I know you miss Newton."

"I don't want to talk about him, Tressa." For the first time since she entered the room, Horizon didn't try to fake being happy. Catalyst knew that she was grieving, and that fact made her want to hide away forever.

"That's alright, love. What can I do to help you?"

"Some tea would be nice, and maybe we can just sit together?" Horizon looked up into Catalyst's eyes for the first time since the tarot reading began. In her gaze, she found the pity she was afraid of, but it was mostly overwhelmed by adoration and care.

"That sounds lovely. Let me put a kettle on." Catalyst stood up from the table, gently letting go of Horizon's hand as she walked towards the kitchen. "I assume you'd like something calming? Lavender?"

"You know me so well, dear." Horizon smiled. As Catalyst busied herself getting the tea together, Horizon took to running her fingers over the drawings on the cards. Such delicate, pretty things, and yet they tell you all your fears and worries.

Oh Newt, how I miss you...

So many people are so mean to Kingsley and say they hate him simply because he's not Molly and I am fighting them off with a sword. None of you fuckers are true Tealeaf enjoyers. Love my boy or die by my blade; what did he ever do to any of you 😭

Hello! The thing is--I do understand why Kingsley can be upsetting to people, I really do. Especially when we've had Molly for such little time :( And it does make me sad that Kingsley doesn't seem to get the same treatment as the rest of the Nein, or that he's not as loved, so I understand both perspectives.

But honestly to me, a part of the appeal of Kingsley is that...although he's grown and changed, a part of him is still Molly; it's the thought that this shard of a soul was loved enough that it managed to endure, to grow and find its way home.

I love the ending of Lucien's novel, because the thought that Molly felt for Lucien enough to want to reach out to him in the very end, the way they both make peace with each other and decide to be reborn together--it's so heartwarming and cathartic, and it really feels like the final piece to me that King's introduction was missing.

I think, terrifying as the thought is, Kingsley himself is also aware that he's grown from Molly's soul shard (and Lucien).

Kingsley: “Not now, but in the future, I'd like to hear about your friend. Later, once I--once I know me better.”

Yasha: “I would love that.”

Kingsley: “Thank you.”

Yasha: “It's nice to have you back.”

Kingsley: “It's nice to be here.”

Yasha: “You know what I mean.”

Kingsley: “I do.”

The fact that he calls out to Yasha and knows her as Love, remembers the tarot card names he gave to everyone. The moment when Jester casts Greater Restoration, and King is lost in his pretty dream of the circus--"I was having the nicest dream."

And more than that, he keeps asking for Lestera specifically. "There was a--oh. There was a circus. And a...a beautiful woman, in a red coat. She was telling me secrets, showing me how to keep secrets. Show secrets--I...Where's the woman? No, not her...where's the woman--" Molly's heart, the part of him that loved Lestera and Yasha and the rest of the Mighty Nein? It's still there, still feels for all of them. "I get...feelings from you. All of you..." And that to me is such a comfort.

Lastly, I'm still very much struck by the fact that Molly always intended for Mollymauk to be more of a temporary name, one he kept until he was ready to choose another for himself--it feels kind of like Molly was his birth name, and Kingsley is more of a tiefling virtue name. I love the way that King changing his name when he's reborn mirrors Molly's worship of the Moonweaver--and how he incorporated his religion into his tarot cards. There's something nice about how King is still following those tenets of the Mooweaver, even if he doesn't quite realize it. For everything that's changed, there are many intrinsic aspects of Tealeaf that still ring the same.

"Each deck of Moon Oracle cards are different, as each deck evolves with the owner. When a card is weathered or simply no longer speaks to you, replace it with a new card of your own design. Something personal and true. Trust yourself; what is true for you will ring true for others. Some choose to change a card each Lunar cycle. Some decks magically destroy a card when it is replaced with a new one--such decadence!"

One more thing, but--I think that, because we've gotten so little time with King (and haven't really gotten the chance to hear Taliesin really talk about him ;; CR please give us a Kingsley Tealeaf Q and A one day I am begging--) there's so much about him that's open to interpretation or that's left intentionally vague. And the same could be true about Molly's initial soul shard too. "If souls could grow from but a piece..." Even Molly's own goddess is surprised when he's reborn as Kingsley. There's no precedence for this. He's an anomaly, an impossibility...a miracle.

All that just to say, that. I don't think one interpretation of King is inherently better than another, and I'm sure a lot of people aren't happy about my interpretation either. But I understand why King is as decisive a character as he is. He'll always be important to me though--and I'll always see him as being a part of Molly, a shard of a soul that was full of so much love and joy, he got another chance to live again and be reborn. And I'm happy if this little tiefling king is able to bring others the same kind of joy and comfort he brought me.

#it means so so much to me that molly's little soul shard was found again by people who loved him #that he and lucien got another chance to live again and be with the mighty nein. with their family--#im sorry i know it can be disheartening to be a kingsley fan :( and i also understand why he makes people sad #but he will always still be molly's heart to me. and that gives me so much joy #the fact that the nein got to bring him back again. even if he's changed...that means something to me #im glad he and lucien get another chance #and that they wanted to take it together--very cathartic and healing to me #anyway #man #i am hoping against hope we get another nein oneshot soon and tal is playing king kingsley teaelaf #tell me tal wouldn't come up with the absolute hottest outfit for this infernal plank king--

hi everyone! so my first impression is, that you’re a free spirit. you love excitement and trying new things. you could be prone to rush into things without thinking of the consequences or outcomes. you march to the beat of your own drum and don’t care what anyone else thinks (or at least you’re faking it very well). you probably already had some kind of spiritual awakening, that could’ve felt more like a tower moment, but helped you see through all the bs, that is out society ruled by greedy and selfish men. some of you may be strongly religious, while others of you are the polar opposite and might actually stay clear from anything related to that topic. either way, at your core you’re someone who values communication and always speaking ones truth. you especially adore intellectually stimulating conversations with your friends, since they are an important part of your life. you could have the tendency to give to much, so please stay aware of who you give your energy to and set some healthy boundaries. you don’t give much importance to money and/or material wealth. for a few of you, that is because you always had someone too provide for you, but for others it’s exactly the opposite, again. it’s interesting, that there are two such different sides coming through in the same pile. but yeah, some of you didn’t grew up under the best circumstances and without a lot of comfort or even safety at home. you all learned to find joy and appreciate the smaller things in life. you’re someone hardworking, who loves or literally hates teamwork (there’s those two sides again) and solving problems. you could also be very creative. i feel like you have a special talent, that you’re unaware of or that you’re afraid of exploring more. you might doubt your talents and work a lot, never really feeling like what you’re doing is good enough. i don’t mean to sound harsh but you really need to get over yourself, because you’re doing amazing sweetie! don’t worry if something isn’t perfect at the first try or the second or the third. if you’re giving your best, then that is all that matters and you can be proud of that. you are someone who tends to give their all to the people and things they’re passionate about. i see, that you still carry a lot of sadness in you, it’s easy for you to fall into a depressive state. but from the looks of it, you have worked on bettering yourself, so this doesn’t to happen too often anymore or you’re just able to deal with it easier. you have such an authentic vibe and energy which i love.

additional messarges: there’s a lot of air and earth energy coming through, you could have these placements in your astrological birth chart but you certainly don’t need to. this could simply be the vibe that best represents your core. air and earth are opposing elements, which i had to note, because we had those opposing sides in your pile. flying insects, especially butterflies and dragonflies could be of importance to you. they could be a sign from spirit, as well as angel number 1111. always trust your own judgment, guidance and intuition and stop overthinking every little detail. stay focused and don’t be afraid to walk your own path, but don’t feel the need to rush and simply move at your own pace.

Reading - Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.... the stupidity of it all...

It's a Saturday morning here in a sunny and warm Johannesburg. It's time for your weekly royal reading. I have not watched the fakeflix fukumentary but I have seen some news reports that are super critical of the "reality" show. I formulated a five card general reading and read using the Cosmic Tarot, which is the one deck that seems to tune in very easily to situations around the Harkles.

Has the documentary achieved what they wanted?

Seven Swords RX - This is a negative card in the upright meaning deception, thievery etc, so I am going to take that as a no, it has not achieved what they wanted. In fact the card is telling me that the series is doing more harm to their cause than good. In the reverse this is a card of deceptions being exposed, and not in a good way. This fakeflix effort could expose them in a way they never expected.

How do they feel about the UK parliament proposed amendments to the Titles Deprivation Act of 1919?

4 Pentacles - this is a card of assets and hanging onto assets. I feel as if this move by MPs has got them very worried. This is the first effort that might actually succeed in removing the Dukedom and potentially the Prince of the Realm. Historically this Act removed titles from nazi sympathisers because of perceived treason. Not even real evidence of treason, but just the suspicion of treason. The individuals in questions were effectively removed from the family, and the LOS including their descendents forever. Many are calling the fakeflix series as an actual act of treason. And because this Act is not a blanket Act, i.e. not giving wide ranging powers for the deprivation of just any title from any peer on a whim, but closely linked to perceived treason, this one might actually pass through the House of Lords unopposed. They are right to be worried, they should be very very worried, because at the heart of it, while they appear to hate all things British and the royal family, they nevertheless dearly want to hang onto those racist titles.

How do the majority of Britons feel about the Harkles now?

10 Wands - The words that jumped into my mind are they are effing sick to the back teeth of them. This is a card of burden and feeling overwhelmed, it calls on the individual (or individuals) in question to put the burdens down. I feel that the majority of Britons have washed their hands of the Harkles, a real sense of this can't go on. Enough is enough. Read with the preceding card, I have a feeling that their will be very few among the public that would oppose the UK parliament on the deprivation of titles. In fact, a successful deprivation of titles might actually draw a collective sigh of relief!

What are the Harkles doing behind the scenes now?

5 Pentacles RX - in the upright this is the card of exile, financial loss, exclusion and poverty. In the reverse it is a bad omen. It signals a loss of faith in yourself, in relationships and institutions. It is almost as if they are not really doing anything right now, except feeling even more sorry for themselves. It has an energy of hopelessness. They are very worried, this card is making me feel sick to my stomach, that horrible dread feeling you get when you think what the hell have I done?

Outcome

Knight of Swords - this is the stress and truth card. As an individual this represents someone who is driven and prepared to fight for beliefs. But in a work situation like this, pertaining to work done by the Harkles, it represents lawyers, auditors, consultants, particularly those who are hired to fire and not fix. I feel like this situation has crossed the point of being fixed. The sword of Damacles springs to mind.

Dionysius the Elder who was condemned to sit under a naked sword that was suspended by a hair in order to demonstrate to him that being a king was not the happy state Damocles had said it was. This is a cutting energy, so I feel here that it represents the parliamentarians, the law makers and the power that they wield. I think it signals that the Titles Deprivations Act amendments will succeed. On a second front, it could represent lawyers hired by Netflix to end the contract with the Harkles. They could be fired by Netflix after next weeks release. Either way the outcome of the "documentary" is not what they imagined and it is not a good outcome.

Underlying energy

The Fool - this is immature, childish energy and this card comes with the warning, Look before you Leap. This is the card of foolishness, ill-considered risks. It signals the beginning of a new path. The fool dances on the edge of a precipice, so it is risky energy that suggests one wrong move and he could fall into the abyss. This is a time of great risk for Harkles, it could go either way, but I am inclined to say they have been very very foolish and it is the beginning of the end. I am hearing Fools rush in, where angels fear to tread. This is a dire warning to the Harkles.

I drew a clarifier on whether they are about to axed by Netflix?

8 Pentacles RX - in the upright this card says hard work pays off and brings rewards that are due. In the reverse, it suggests that their hard work brings an unexpected result. I think getting fired by Netflix is a real possibility.

Conclusion

By their own hand, the Harkles have placed themselves in the most precarious position, they are on the verge of losing absolutely everything. Losing respect, their remaining followers, their deals, their titles, their links to the family. The only way this could be worse is if the Tower showed up.

I shuffled and cut the deck again and got a series of negative cards, but no Tower, and then I looked at the bottom of the deck and what should be there? THE TOWER!

Hi! I'm fascinated by tarot reading!

How did you get into it?

It's a bit of an interesting story honestly lol I'll try to spare you all the boring details, but back in 2020, my husband and i hit a huge rough patch. I was a very different person then: unhealed, full of trauma, no healthy coping mechanisms, no therapist, so codependent that the idea of him leaving me made me feel like i was quite literally going to die. It wasn't good. (I'm a lot better now, and a LOT has changed since then. All for the better). =]

So, January 2021, my bestie...my ride or die...she offered to do a tarot reading for me. I didn't really have an opinion on it then other than it seemed cool so I told her why not. Little did I know, she had been doing tarot and other spiritual practices for 2 years in secret (for fear of judgement,) and opened up to me about it.

Not long after that initial reading, things that she said would happen *did* happen and it astounded me b/c there was literally no way she could have known the outcome of that situation i asked about. I was immediately more fascinated, and asked her to tell me more about it.

Long story short, she gifted me one of her decks she no longer used. She said it hated her (LOL) but I have had nothing but great experiences with it. During that year, I began to explore my own spirituality, and found myself getting deeper into Tarot. I have been doing it ever since. I mostly read intuitively, but I cannot stress enough that it's very important that if you want to read tarot yourself, you learn the cards. There is much that I am still learning, but as you explore it, you learn not only the card representations, but you also learn that some cards stand for certain zodiac signs, or time periods, or combinations of cards have a set meaning...it's incredible how deep it can go.

If you are interested in learning for yourself, I HIGHLY recommend getting a classic Rider-Waite deck, this book (not sponsored or anything, just a really good book) and this playlist. Don't freak out, but I ENCOURAGE you to WRITE ON YOUR DECK. This will be your training deck, and is the foundation for ALL Rider-Waite based decks. if you like journaling in some aspect, do a card pull each day. Study what it means to you before you pull out your guidebooks and notes, and then compare to the guides to see if you got it right. It's a fantastic way to learn, and get more familiar with your cards.

General Yandere! Natsume headcanons

Natsume would not be the easiest yandere to deal with, simply because it would be kind of hard to catch on that he harbors such intense, obsessive feelings for you. He likes to act a bit aloof, wanting to keep up his mysterious charm while at the same time hiding his true feelings to not be too vulnerable when talking to other people

He´s also naturally a bit flirty from time to time so you wouldn´t suspect anything when he keeps throwing flirty comments your way in casual conversation. That´s just how he is, right? Natsume tries to give you subtle hints about how he feels about you without revealing the true depth of his love, but you´re just not catching on, which probably frustrates him a fair bit

Natsume loves talking to you a lot, as it allows him to both learn more information about you and get closer to you in a way that looks natural. You don´t need to know that he already knew most of the things you´re telling him, simply from carefully observing you when you go about your day. He still loves listening to your voice regardless and just spending time with you like this is already a blessing in his eyes

He thinks that being very attentive and frequently giving you gifts as “good luck charms” combined with his charming way of speaking would be enough to win you over eventually

In the meantime, he´ll spend a considerable amount of time in one of his secret rooms, trying to improve his odds of getting with you through his magic. Every day he draws a card from his tarot deck as a means to glimpse into the future of your shared life together. He uses his crystal ball to secretly watch you when you have to be somewhere else. He puts a potent love spell on every single gift he gives you. I mean it´s only fair after what you did to his poor heart, right? You bewitched him and pulled him deep into an abyss of obsession with no way to escape

Natsume just can´t get you out of his mind so he has to do absolutely everything in his power to be with you!

This leads me to my next point. Natsume as a yandere is very possessive and gets really jealous really quick. It doesn´t even have to be something like a stranger hitting on you or kissing you ( though god forbid if that were to happen), he already gets jealous when you´re simply talking to someone else and giving them more attention than him

He doesn´t like it, hates it in fact! Now, he´s not going to blame you for this, you´re way too nice of a person to simply turn someone away after all! But whoever took up your time is now an enemy in Natsume´s mind. They dare try to take you away from him? Oh, he won´t let them

While he would try to maintain a calm facade as long as you are still around, not wanting to reveal his true nature to you, after all, Natsume would get noticeably upset at the other person and throw in harsh remarks from time to time, all in an effort to drive them away ( but also to vent his frustration and anger)

You might just assume that this is just regular Natsume being a bit cold with his words and probably don´t worry too much about it ( I mean you´ve probably seen how he talks to Tsumugi), but he is livid.

He´s so so jealous and he hates having to share you with anyone else, even if you aren´t an official couple yet. You´re already his in his mind, the stars have told him as much! You two are destined to be with each other and he´s not going to let some random nobody ruin that for him

After that ordeal, Natsume would be in a bad mood the rest of the day and as soon as he gets back to his secret room, he opens up one of his spellbooks and starts looking through and considering all of his options. Magicians are supposed to bring smiles and help out other people but just this once he wants to abuse that power. He´s going to cast every single curse he can find at the poor person that got too close to you in his eyes, wishing eternal damnation upon them

Natsume will also make sure to talk to you about this person and convince you that they aren´t a good person to be around. Haven´t you heard? They´ve been found stealing things from their classmates! All the missing items have miraculously been found in their bag this morning! They were probably just trying to turn you into another one of their unsuspecting victims by being so disgustingly nice to you. So it would be better if you just stayed away from them, okay? He´ll be here to keep you company instead, you didn´t really need them anyway <3

Please just give up on them or Natsume would be forced to resort to some more violent means to drive them off. There´s nothing he wouldn´t do if it´s to ensure your happy future together

BRF Reading - 4th of April, 2023

This is speculation only

Cards drawn on the 4th of April, 2023

Question: What do we need to know about the coronation of King Charles III?

Interpretation: Loss/death, reversal of fortunes, and a tower moment. This is not going to be the happy reading I hoped it would be.

Card One: The Four of Swords.

This is a card of retreat from the battles of the world, of rest, and it is also one of the death cards in the tarot, as it traditionally shows a tomb. The energy of this card is one of rest, of needing time alone to recover from the stresses of the world and to recuperate from exhaustion. I don't know if the message is for the general public, the king, or other members of the royal family, but the message is clear: rest, stop fighting battles and withdraw from the world for a while, recharge your energies.

One minor meaning of the Four of Swords is that of a ruined reputation. I am hoping that this meaning does not apply here.

Card Two: The Queen of Pentacles in Reverse.

The Queen of Pentacles is my card for a Capricorn person. The Capricorn in the BRF is The Princess of Wales, so this card is about Catherine (I looked up the natal chart of the other candidate, The Duchess of Edinburgh, and she has her sun in very early Aquarius).

With the Queen of Pentacles in reverse, something is going to be wrong with Catherine with respect to the coronation. She may not be able to attend for some reason, or if she does attend she will be not at her best. The card in reverse says that her light will be dimmed, she will be in eclipse somehow. If the card were upright, everything would be great and Catherine would be shining like the star she is, but with the card in reverse, something is wrong/overshadowed/dimmed. The coronation is not going to be a happy time for her. Even if she attends and smiles through it all, there will be hidden strain underneath. Something is not right here.

Card Three: The Five of Cups.

This is a card of loss and mourning, and for me, in this deck, it indicates the loss of a family member. More generally, it can indicate disappointment, with things not turning out as they should. It can indicate a person who is caught up in past emotions and who is incapable of moving on from those emotions.

This card has two energies. The first, which is a natural reaction to the coronation, is grief for the late Queen. The coronation is going to bring the loss of the late Queen sharply into focus, as it is all about the crowning of her replacement/successor. It is eight months (approximately) since she passed away, and that is not long enough for the mourning process to be - not complete, but stablised. It takes approximately a year or more to work through the first part of the grief over losing someone (which is why they say don't make any major decisions for a year after a death). The coronation is going to remind people of what they have lost as well as celebrating a new King.

As an aside, in my opinion, it would have been better to wait for another year before crowning King Charles, as everyone would be well and truly through the first year of mourning by then. As it is, it is going to be harder to celebrate when one part of you is still grieving for the late Queen.

The second energy from this card is that of disappointment, of things not being the way you expected them to be. I hate to write this, but I think that the coronation is going to be a disappointment to a lot of people, as a lot of the pomp and pageantry that people love has been removed from the celebration. I think that people will watch it expecting something like the coronation of the late Queen, which is all we have for comparison, and they will be disappointed. Alternatively, or at the same time, it could be Charles who ends up being disappointed. His day may turn out to be different to what he has dreamt about for all these years.

Hopefully no one dies and the loss of a family member meaning of this card and the death energy of the first card do not manifest.

Card Four: The Wheel of Fortune in Reverse.

This is the first major arcana card in the reading. It is one of two dominant energies in this reading.

When the Wheel of Fortune is in reverse, someone's fortunes are going to take a turn for the worse. This may be delayed until after the coronation, or it may be visible at the coronation. I don't know who this card is for, whether it is for specific person or for the BRF in general, but things are going to go downhill after the coronation.

The message from this card in this situation is to let go and let the changes happen. Don't try to control them, as that will only make things worse. Let go of trying to be in control and work with the changes until the wheel turns and you move out of this rough patch into better times.

Card Five: The Tower.

This is the second major arcana card in the reading, so it one of the two dominant energies of this reading. The Tower is a card of sudden upheaval, of an event that destroys part of your life so you have to rebuild it from the rubble. The coronation is going to be a Tower moment for someone. I don't know who (and I hope it is Harry's wake up call if he is there), but someone is going to find their life changed as a result of the coronation. Coming after the Wheel of Fortune in reverse this says that the change is not for the better, it is going to be a decline in fortune from which the person must rebuild part of their life on a more authentic foundation.

Note that this Tower event does not have to be a huge event. It could be as ordinary as going to the coronation and seeing something that brings something home to you in a way that you haven't experienced before. The turmoil, destruction and rebuilding are more likely to be internal rather than external events. The again, it could be a very public display of someone's change in status within the BRF. We will have to wait and see what happens on the day.

Underlying Energy: The King of Swords

The King of Swords can be a person, especially an Aquarian. It can also be an attitude of strategy, of using reason and intellect to look into and solve problems, of keeping a clear mind and making decisions based on logical thought while having all the consequences of that decision clear in your mind. It can also be a card of consulting expert advice, especially in the legal or medical fields.

The energy of this card is one of strategy and of consulting experts. The dominant energy is that of strategy. The coronation is being used as a strategic event to send political messages to the people in the UK and to the leaders of other nations. The strategic concerns have dominated the planning for the coronation.

There is also a strong energy of consulting experts. I don't know what about or who for, but there have definitely been a lot of experts consulted before decisions were made about the coronation.

Conclusion:

This is not the happy leadup to the coronation that I was expecting.

The dominant energies are that of the Tower and the Wheel of Fortune. Something about the coronation, the event itself or something that happens at it, is going to give someone a Tower moment where part of their life collapses and they have to rebuild it from rubble. At the same time, either this person or another person will suffer a reversal in their fortunes, which are most likely to be public (major arcana cards usually play out in the public arena). There will be a definite downturn in the luck/good fortune that will date from or be caused by the coronation. I am hoping that these cards apply to a specific person, but there is always the chance that they apply to the BRF as an institution.

There is death energy around the coronation in this reading. Part of that is that we are still in the first year of mourning the late Queen, and the coronation is going to highlight that loss. I hope that it all there is to it, as otherwise it looks like the BRF might lose another family member on or around the date of the coronation. The alternative is a loss of reputation, which is not good either.

Something is going to affect The Princess of Wales. She will be dimmed/not at her best, and she may even be absent from the coronation.

The energy going into the coronation is of needing rest. The general public and/or members of the BRF and/or the King need to pull back, take a break from the world and just rest for a bit. Otherwise, everyone at the coronation will be in a state of complete exhaustion and be unable to enjoy it. I feel that this message is for particular members of the BRF but I don't know who they are.

Finally, there is a possibility that the coronation will end up being a disappointment as it is different to what was expected. Again, this could apply to the general public and/or to the King.
