More things I hate about modern literature because today is a bad day and I need to be a dick online to feel better:
How much sex there is in everything
And again I am not a prude, erotica has existed for decades and it's okay but every popular YA or adventure book nowadays is a bad erotica with some low stakes adventure in the background
And somehow they are able to be both bad porn and bad adventure
And also people will promote those books as " yes the plot kinda sucks but there's good sex scenes"
The word Mary sue
The misuse of the word Mary sue
Any attempt to make a "LOTR inspired" book made by a man
Because usually the things that made LOTR good go just over the authors head and we end with basically a vin diesel movie set in the middle ages
This is not just about modern literature but books about or set in horrible moments for a oppressed minority(like holocaust or slavery) written by people who aren't part of said minority
Coleen hoover
She did for feminist literature what Seth MacFarlane did for adult animation
The harry Potter/Percy Jacksonification of children's literature
The magical choose one trope being taken to a magical world did irremediable damage to children's literature
The mean girl trope
Books set in fictional middle ages but the protagonist go to balls in fashion show modern runaway style dresses
You know the tacky Pinterest glittery showing shoulders back and leg
Those official arts of the same exactly white women and the same white guy in slightly different clothes with the same 2016 style eyebrows and the sharp jawline and the nothing expression
Characters being described as "golden skin" so depending if the author needs some representation points they can be interpreted as people of color but if no one says nothing they stay as just tan white
Comparing dark skin color to any food
How many authors try to make at the same time "this is brainless wish fulfilment fantasy about being desired by a hot dominating guy" and " this is a profound take about the horrors of abuse"
Usually by having the second love interest to abuse the protag
In the end the message that stays is any abuse is forgivable if the abuser is hot enough
The "I'm skinny but not hot super model skinny I am ugly skinny my bones show because of malnourishment"
"yet I don't feel any other effect of starvation like being weak and I can carry five times my body weight in whatever animal the author needs me to hunt in the beginning of the book because making me a farmer wouldn't be cool"
"I am ugly" cried the skinny girl with locks of auburn hair porcelain white skin and eyes of emerald green.
The jk Rowling stupid name school (she named the werewolf Wolfy mcwolf in Latin and people though it was smart now we have a girl who fights on a island named island and the archer who marries a fae named fae archer )
And again faes because fuck faes

See I don’t understand why so many writers rely on miscommunication when the superior technique is always “I communicated perfectly but what I said was extremely stupid”

Honestly we could REALLY get into the fact that a lot of the insanity in Acotar is an excellent exercise in why you can't really separate the art from the author.
Sjm's zionism is OBVIOUS in the text. The ic destabilize governments to the detriment of people they will never have to care for, steal artifacts from other countries, displace people, cause invasions, commit war crimes for 50 years "for the greater good" all while their own people are living under unchecked brutality and poverty.
They are rich megalomaniacs that care for no one but themselves and their own emotional and material satisfaction and they are PRAISED for it. In fact anyone who even remotely disagrees with the IC is almost always one of the villains in the story (Beron, Tamlin, etc) as if to condition the reader that asking questions that are critical of the IC puts you on the wrong side of the narrative morally.
All of that sounds REALLL familiar huh?

I think people are being disingenuous when they claim Gwynriel is a crack ship. Gwyn and Azriel are two characters who interact in the book, they have things in common/shared experiences (Sangravah, training, the blood rite), and Gwyn was included in Azriel’s bonus chapter in a positive light. A crack ship is one that is bizarre and extremely unlikely to ever be canon. For example: Mor and Lucien. It would be ridiculous and make zero sense. But to dismiss Gwynriel outright sounds like denial to me.

I hate the way you talk to me, and the way you cut your hair.
I hate the way you drive my car. I hate it when you stare.
I hate your big dumb combat boots and the way you read my mind.
I hate you so much it makes me sick — it even makes me rhyme.
I hate the way you're always right.
I hate it when you lie.
I hate it when you make me laugh — even worse when you make me cry.
I hate it that you're not around and the fact that you didn't call.
But mostly I hate the way I don't hate you — not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.

HOFAS SPOILERS, many spoilers from part 1 of the book and the bonus
because I don't see people having a "voice of reason" and I keep seeing posts like "Rhys and Nesta hate each other"/"Cassian should have taken her side" over the bonus chapter.
If you've read part 1 of HOFAS and you found out everything that Azriel and Nesta found out about the Daglan/Asteri and the Night Court involvement/legacy whatever that was with "the son of my son" and blablabla, please, tell me, how bad good is your critical thinking?
Because you bet Azriel went to Rhys and told him EVERYTHING, including how Bryce stole Truth-Teller. How there was an ASTERI/DAGLAN sleeping like a baby under the prison, under everyone's nose.
Did you also miss the part where said Asteri said they left a kill switch in Prythian and many other "seeds" of their powers? There was a question that said "have you looked beneath every sacred mountain? at their very roots?" Are you all forgetting Rhys and the other High Lords spent YEARS under one of those mountains? That Ramiel is an IMPORTANT mountain in the Night Court?
What the Asteri said shocked Azriel, you could tell from his reaction. It affected Nesta as well to the point where she told Bryce she's as bad as the Asteri.
So you think these two didn't go back home and dumped on Rhys (and Amren, and the IC) everything they learned? That Azriel hold back anything? Nesta might have, althought I doubt she did, but you bet Azriel told him EVERYTHING.
We're not gonna talk about how Bryce swore on her mate's life that she won't tell anyone about Prythian, and then 2 days later she's having a chat with the AUTUMN KING about Prythian. Like sis, you're straight up stupid at this point. Out of everyone, you tell HIM?!
So later Bryce goes back not to give back what she stole, but to ask for more. MORE. THE TROVE. And NESTA gives it to her. GIVES IT TO HER besides everything they found out about it. So yes, Nesta was stupid at that part.
But come in the bonus chapter and Rhys' breakdown.
Because man has a breakdown and take into consideration this:
he has a family, a baby, if he dies his wife dies
he's a High Lord in a court that comes from the bloodline of the people who defeated the Daglan and bonus points he found out the Prison should be under his rule as well.
they don't have Truth Teller anymore, but they also, at that point, don't have the Trove anymore
Bryce left behind her parents but Bryce is also the one who betrayed them and stole from them and at this point Rhys doesn't trust a word from Bryce's existence. From all he knows she might not give a shit about her parents and this could go two ways: 1. Bryce doesn't come back for her parents or 2. Bryce dies and The Trove gets in the hands of the Asteri setting a chain reaction that ends with the Asteri back in Prythian and wanting to kill them all
So yes, sorry babes, Rhys has EVERY RIGHT to get mad at Nesta. But more than getting mad at Nesta he was mad AT THE SITUATION AS A WHOLE. It's a normal reaction.
And Nesta's reaction? Oh babies, do you expect NESTA to be calm when someone, especially Rhys, yells at her? She's an old sister with anger issues. Trust me, she would have gone balistic on Rhys no matter what.
It's not because they hate each other, babes. It's because that's who and how they are.
Rhys, the one having to deal with a lot in order to protect not just his family but his court as well, and Nesta, the one who doesn't get shit from anyone and has anger issues.
And the "Cassian should've taken Nesta's side"?
Cassian KNOWS his mate. Nesta is not Feyre to need someone's support in an argument. Do you think Nesta would have WANTED Cassian to get in between or take her side? Cassian know what kind of relationship Rhys and Nesta have, he also knows his mate can handle Rhys or anyone else.
So no, it's very in character for him not to get between them.
You can love Nesta, you can hate Rhys. You can love or hate Nessian. But you need to admit that Rhys has his points and Nesta did wrong by giving away the Trove and that Rhys doesn't have to be okay with that.
Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

Do Revenge really had the gall to combine Jawbreaker, Mean Girls, Clueless, Cruel Intentions, Heathers, Booksmart, Jennifer’s Body, AND 10 Things I Hate About You
While starting Camila Mendes (Riverdale), Maya Hawke (Stranger Things), Austin Abrams (Euphoria), and Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
And having a soundtrack featuring Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, Chloe Moriondo, The Cranberries, and Hayley Kiyoko (and honourable mention Taylor Swift bc they quoted a song without playing it)
This movie really went “Pastel Female Rage with a side of Sapphic” and “Gen Z needs its own 90s flick” AND DELIVERED

So Skybound Games is posting Reels on Facebook making fun of Sarah (TWDG) and calling her useless. Nice to see they’re carrying that torch of ableism from the Telltale writers

I shouldn't have.
It should have been him, he should have died instead of Sarah, he should have been the one to get shot, the one who bled out in the grass, his last memories nothing but pain. He should have run faster, turned quicker, put himself between her and the soldier, her and the danger, her and the gun, should have sacrificed himself to make sure that she is safe because that is the only job he has ever had and he failed.
Joel not only tried to kill himself because Sarah was gone but because he does not deserve to live anymore, he should have died right there and then with her, hell, a part of him did die with her. Most of him did. There is no justice in him getting to live while she died, forever fourteen, the definition of innocence, his innocence, and he watched her blood dry on his hands for hours, watching it peel and crumble to dust.
Dust and mud and dirty water while she rots in the ground in an unmarked, shallow grave somewhere in Texas.
Joel shouldn't have lived but he did and he regrets it every single day.

I hated ACOSF "extra chapter" and here's why
First of all, I hated because of the Rhysand we receive in it. He's very angry and he treats Az like shit.
Why would the same person that sacrificed Prythian and only saved a city, that his nightmares where solely about his brothers being raped and stolen from happiness; why would this person ask Azriel if he thinks he deserved not only something but someone. Why.
Why would the person that was intentionally ignoring his mating bond in order to let the other part of the bond being happy, the person that knows that the mating bond doesnt guarantee love but "genetically better children" force a relationship that Elain has been forcefully putting away from herself for years? Why?
The Rhysand we know will likely kill Prythian entirely to make his family happy, to guarantee their happiness.
I hated the way he acted towards Az.
I hated how we are presented as "Az took the gift he already gave someone and gave it to another" TO GWYN.
Like ???? Gwyn doesnt deserve to be second option, I dont give a fuck about what any of you say about the shadows and stuff.
One minute he is all about "I dont care anymore" anout to be on his knees for Elain and the next one he is giving THAT FCKNG NECKLACE TO SOMEONE ELSE? Like ????
Gwyn deserves more than that. Elain deserves more than that. But most of all Az deserves much more than just "adapt". Let the man be happy for fucks sake.
