"I've been imagining in the Wukongverse, what if Wukong's version of the literary work appears? I imagined the version of him based on theories that Wukong was actually a female in the works and due to the centuries the work was adapted to a male, due to his title of king in Cantonese being unisex. (possibly the first obligatory female character in history(?) It would also be funny for a woman to declare war on the celestial kingdom, but for the au I imagine her being Aroace/Asexual (but using terms of the time she would be celibate.. .don't hit me plz) its shape would be that of a normal macaque, so it's tiny.
Merry belated Christmas and have a happy new year uwu"
That actually sounds adorable! A book-accurate Wukong that's both the size of a regular monkey and femme!
I imagine the fact that she's female is often forgotten in history, not just because of sexism, but also because if you weren't looking hard enough you'd think she was a male monkey.
Its not the first time a Journey to the West character has had their gender changed; Tripitaka (+characters based on them) is often rewritten as a woman, particularly in "The New Legends of Monkey", "Saiyuki/Monkey Magic" (1978), "Dragon Ball Z" with Bulma, "Starzinger" (1978), and "Shinzo" (2000). This is because of a mix of Tripitaka having many traits people see as stereotypically feminine, and irl there being female buddhist monks called bhikkhunī.
It would be very funny in the Wukongverse, with all the different Tang Monks/Tripitakas discussing their different worlds when a certain topic of dicussion comes up;
2000s!Tripitaka: "It must be very unnverving, being the lone woman in a group of men." NewLegends!Tripitaka: "Absolutely, though from what I hear, many of you came upon similar feelings in the Kingdom of Women." The masc Tripitakas: *all nodding in agreement* HeroisBack!Luier (too young to understand): "Are there any other girls on your Journeys? My mama [LEM] and Sandy are both girls." BookAccurate!Tripitaka: *mumbles under breath* Tang: "What was that?" BookAccurate!Tripitaka: "What about The Monkey King? Aren't all yours women as well? Monkeys are matriarchal." The other Tripitakas: "What???"
And that spills over into the SWK room where they're all already treating the BookAccurate!Wukong as their sister. The Wukongs who are transmasc are very understanding of the plights she faced in the Celestial Realm. Though they do tease her for trying to shave a monk's tonsure into her head fur. And they tease her for her height compared to the others (especially Dasheng who's almost 6ft tall).

So I finished the Netflix live action AtLA last night... it wasn't terrible. The original is still better, of course. Cue string of disorganized thoughts on it...
Is it just me, or does the actor playing Sokka in live action look more like the Ember Island Players version of Sokka than the actual Sokka? Did anyone else get that impression?
One of the first things I noticed was when we got a herd of CGI flying bison, they were blurred into the background and/or obstructed by light beams, so I immediately wondered if they were going to be trying to cover up bad CGI throughout the series. Buuuuut when we see Appa up close as Aang is talking to him, he actually looks decent. CGI Momo on the other hand... he looks very similar to how he did in the cartoon, and that's the problem with him. He looks out of place in the live action series.
The bending effects actually look pretty good. This, coupled with actors that have actually trained in martial arts, makes for decent fight scenes... though I'm probably not the best judge of that.
Not as many fun moments as the original... I guess they were going for a more serious tone, but it did still manage to make me laugh at times. I was glad that they kept in Cabbage Man, and the minstrels that sing the secret tunnel song.
I didn't like how they changed Bumi... Rather than messing with Aang for fun while delivering his message, he just... forces him into a duel to the death to try to teach him about making impossible decisions. Granted, it ends well, but still... eh, just didn't like how that was done, and the points that were made (war requiring impossible choices and Aang knowing that he can rely on his friends) were points that were made at other points in the series, so it just didn't feel necessary to change that part.
Another thing that kind of bugged me was that although Katara still wears her iconic necklace, its significance is not at all mentioned, which is disappointing. So Pakkun changing his mind about women water bending doesn't come from the realization that Katara's Gran Gran was the woman he loved, who left the northern water tribe. Noooo, instead, they have this series go out of its way to say "look how amazingly feminist we are!" Like... the anti-sexism message was clear in the original, and it came across more naturally. This version feels like they're trying too hard to drive home the point.
There were some changes that I actually liked though. Zuko's outburst during the war meeting where he protests the plan to sacrifice the 41st division is there with different dialogue but the same point. But having Ozai then send them with Zuko in his exile saying he can have the 41st division if he's so concerned about them was a nice touch. As Iroh notes, they are alive because of Zuko's sacrifice.
Sooo... as far as live action remakes go, it's ok. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being Dragon Ball Evolution, and 10 being the Netflix live action One Piece, I would give this maybe a 6 or 7. The original is better, but this version still has the same core story so far, and it doesn't suck.
As a side note, I know that one of the reasons for live action remakes is to reach the segment of the audience who simply won't watch something if it's animated. And just... can we please kill the ridiculous stigma that says "cartoons are for kids"??? Animation is simply the best medium for some stories, and it is absolute ludicrous that the medium of a story's portrayal would be what determines what demographic should be watching it. Japan seems to get this; if only the west did, too.

The World We Knew
Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 4: Snakes In The Garden, Chapter 5
Warnings: The depictions of the priest are not at all an embodiment of other priests and Christian. Implied grooming, Creepy older dudes being weird around KidReader, Nothing happens to the KidReader though, Zombies, Mentions of minor character death, Sexism towards woman, Zombie apocalypse brings out the worst
Backstory to get a better insight about Issac and Radio girl’s first group. (Radio girl being Reader)
She remembers the day she went to church for the first time. An impressionable age of 10 years old. Her mother made her father swore that if they ever had children that they should be allowed to choose their faith. Her father, a devout Christian, agreed to her mothers, an atheist in every sense of the word, request.
Granted her father tried to persuade his daughter to go to church, she just never wanted to go. That is until her father made Captain in the police department. His church was holding a celebration for her father’s honorable work. The people were nice and even though she hated being forced into a frilly dress that her mother picked out. She’d much rather watch Kim Possible or maybe Dragon Ball Z but at least Sunday school was fun.
Some of the kids even made her laugh and she sorta had a lil crush on one of the boys too… much to the teasing and amused smile her mother gave her. “Alright now, lil lady church is starting.” Her mom said as she waved goodbye to the cute looking boy. Sitting in the hard pews as she had half a mind to fall asleep that is until the robe looking dude walked up to the wooden thing. Tugging on her mom’s sleeve to ask her who and what that is. “That man is a priest. Father Abraham Norton and that’s a pulpit.” An O on her face as she nods and looks to him.
They say that children can understand an adult far better than an adult could. Something about being able to clock when something just ain’t right. That tiny, small feeling of something most would miss.
The beady eyes of the priest is what set her off. Not her fault since she was always the best at games like I Spy and Hide-and-Go-Seek. He was off… so to speak, at least about the way the man looked. “Like a snake,” her brows furrowed as her mom pinches her elbow to be quiet and to listen. She couldn’t shake how much of a snake he looked like to her. Blame all the zoo books she got for Christmas.
The way his tongue rolled on S’s and the eyes the man had. Like they were searching for something. “Good morning, my lambs.” The man says with a soft smile. Eyeing the crowd and she shakes her head of nerves when his eyes land on her for a bit. “Now I know we are celebrating and honoring our new appointed Captain but there is something that I must say.” His shoulders fall as he looks sad but almost forced, like when she gets caught taking another cookie when she’s not supposed to.
She looks to her mom but her mother just tilts her head motions for her to keep listening. “I have come to ask for forgiveness.” Some people gasp in the congregation. The Father continues, “20 years ago, I gave in to the sins of desire for a woman. I was seduced by the way she looked, and I couldn’t stop myself.” His brows creasing as he places a hand on his chest.
Her dads eyes widen and then narrow, like he’s calculating. His thumb tapping against his thigh as he always does when he’s recalling something. Until it stops. “If we were back in the old days then I would gladly pluck out my eyes. I’ve found out recently that I have a son. A man that is now 22 years old named, Issac.” He extends his hand, and a man stands. Tall, light skin, brown hair and green, beady eyes. The same as his father.
“A fitting name, Issac Norton-Cortes,” her father grasps her mothers hand and they stare at each other. Wordlessly speaking as the Fatherspeaks solemnly. “Unfortunately, Issac’s mother has passed from unforeseen events. Her last wish was for Issac to be joining our church to help out so please… bare no ill will towards him. It is not his fault that his mother seduced me. He is innocent in his creation that was formed by sinful lust.”
The priest is still speaking as her mother taps her hand, and she looks confused before her mom says, “We are leaving. Now.”
Standing up and walking out as her father has a distant look, a thundering storm raging in his eyes. Being sent up to her room as she doesn’t understand why her mom and dad wanted to suddenly leave. Her dad loves going to church, makes an effort to always have Sunday off. Her dad was about to be celebrated or something like that. So she couldn’t understand why they’d want to leave. Why is her dad so… strange right now?
Tip toeing out of her room as she overhears her parents speaking softly, “-other is Elizabeth Norten. I knew her, Maria. She wasn’t seductive or would ever do something like that. She was just barely 18! Now I know why she suddenly forced to leave.”
“Jamie you can’t mean…”
“Look, she… Elizabeth was troubled, got into fights, did some smoking but she’d never... She would’t.” Her father sounds… upset and angry. “For years I wondered what happened. Her parents never told me.
“Sounds like you really knew her.” Her mother says softly. Her brows turned upward as she’s never seen her husband look so. So distraught before. “Was she your friend?” A tentative ask.
“She…” he sighs, “she helped me out a lot with my dad. Sure, she was a bad influence sometimes, but she stuck up for me whenever I came in with a new bruise from my old man.” She moves closer to get a better look over parents as they look sad. Her mother holding her father in a tight embrace.
Whispering words that she can’t hear as her mom rubs a hand on her dads back. “Her parents brought her to Father Abraham to see if he could help. She wasn’t the same after the first week that she’d have confessionals. She became more and more quiet. Wearing hoodies and always being covered.” His voice breaks.
The realization of it comes crashing down on him nearly 22 years later. “If I’d known… If I had just taken a closer look… I didn’t even reach out to her.” Tears forming in her fathers eyes and the man rarely cries. “How did I not think that it was suspicious?” He remembers how Elizabeth’s parents suddenly disowned her. A crushing guilt in his chest. Her mother says nothing but just holds him to her. “No one knew why… until now.” He glares hard at the floor.
From then on, they’d barely go back to that church. Making up a reason to be excused as the priest smiles assuredly. She was always around her mother since she wouldn’t let her little girl out of her sight. Getting tired of it like children do with overbearing parents. She decided that to sneak away to play with the other kids.
Playing soccer with the kids until she gets tired of it. Can only kick a ball so much before boredom creeps in. She spots the Churches garden and voice in her head to not go in but against her better thought she goes in. Her eyes widening as the garden looks well cared for. Different plants and even some trees. She grins as she crouches near one of the plots. Her hands digging into the soil.
“Hello there,” a voice calls out as she sits with her knees on the dirt, playing with the rolly pollys. The other kids laughing in the background, most likely still playing soccer. She tenses and moves to look at whose is speaking. Green eyes and a wide grin, something that supposed to be kind yet for her 10 year old mind… she doesn’t feel okay.
“All by your lonesome in the garden? Where’s your parents?” He looks around before he steps forward. “My names Issac and you are?”
“My mommy and daddy says I’m not supposed to talk to strangers.” She tells him shyly as she stands up. Her feet shuffle close.
The man grins and he holds out his hand, “That’s very smart. You’re a very smart girl, aren’t you?” He laughs like it’s the funniest thing in the world, “Well my name is Issac.” Grabbing her hand and shaking it. “No longer strangers, see? I bet your name is Eve. A pretty name for a pretty girl.”
Confusion evident on her face at the name, “My names not Ev-“
A voice cuts through the garden making both of them look towards the person speaking. “There you are! Where have you been I’ve been calling you for an hour.” Her mother spots her and rounds the corner faster as she spots Issac. The man grips her hand harder as she tugs back. Finally letting go when her mother places a hand on her shoulders. Her eyes narrowing as she holds her hand out for her little girl to hold onto.
“Gotta be more vigilant with your lil girl. Almost snatched her up,” he laughs but something in his eyes isn’t playful. Her mother pushes her behind her as she smiles far too sweetly. He continues speaking as he looks down at her and not her mother, “She’s a pretty thing too. She’ll make all the boys fawn over her especially at her age right now.”
The smile on her mothers face drops as she glares at him. “10 year old girls shouldn’t have to worry about boys. Stay away from my daughter.” Her tone tight as she moves her and her daughter along as he smiles wide.
As soon as they were closer to her father her mother told her to not speak to Issac again. That the man is up to no good especially since he’s talking to a 10 year old girl like that. Her mom can’t prove it but that man… that man is not a good man. She just knows it. Her mom has never been wrong about people before.
————————————————————
She groans awake. Her hands clenching and unclenching as her eyes blink. “Finally awake, my Eve?” She shivers with disgust at the nickname. Eve, it’s what he called her on the day they first met, and he’s been calling her that ever since. No matter how many times she tells him that’s not her name. Her head pounding as she tries to remember what happened. Her hand moving to massage her head, but she finds that she can’t move them. “Your head hurt, Eve? Sorry I was so rough with you.” The fake worry in his tone doesn’t go unnoticed by her as she glares. “Shouldn’t fight your husband next time.”
“We ain’t married, Issac.” Glaring at him hotly as she struggles in the binds. “You’re not my husband and I ain’t your damn wife!”
“Oh, silly me,” he laughs that stupid noise. All nasally and all teeth, “How presumptuous of me. We never did consummate on our wedding night.” Her glare hardens as she remembers all too well that night and the days before that lead up to it.
————————————————————
She’s been on her own for a couple weeks. Given up hope that her parents are alive. Both aren’t answering their phones and when she went to where her mom worked it was already overrun with dead children and screaming teachers. Her father was one of the first responders to downtown Houston…. They don’t call that place a Dead-zone for nothing now days. It’s a miracle she even made it this far with what little she has. She’s been seeing a group every now and then… maybe she could talk to them and ask to join?
“Holy shit,” her eyes widen as she recognizes the priest. Her parents never let her go back after that whole incident with Issac when she was 10. Apparently, that alone was enough for their parents to leave that church. But… beggars can’t be choosers especially since the Priest is opening up the church for everyone to go to. The priest immediately recognized her as “Jamie and Maria’s daughter.” He smiled with those beady eyes that she could hear her younger selfs thought of him being a snake.
It wasn’t so bad save for the son that kept trying to talk to her. 2 months have come and gone faster than many anticipated. The random cold days and hot days messing with peoples perception of what month but she’s betting it being near December. She had hoped that the son of the priest would’ve forgotten about her in the 2 months that she’s been here but no.
“He really, like really, likes being around you.” Angelica, a friend she’s made in the time that she’s been here. “You don’t think it’s strange?”
“I know it’s strange but s’not like I can mention it.” She sighs as she grabs her pack. “If you haven’t already noticed. His dad is becoming like the leader of this group.” An annoyance in her tone as she thinks on it. It wouldn’t be too bad if the priest wasn’t spouting his ideas to everyone. At first everyone had a voice but slowly but surely it’s like the woman are being treated less. Just a couple days ago and she was almost taken off a scavenging hunt due to her being a woman. Issac stepped in and that’s the only reason why she’s still on the team.
“Doesn’t even make sense that they wanted to take you off. You’re one of the best especially since they’ve been coming back with less and less people.” Angelica notes. It’s true though. Yesterday the Andrews brothers, Edward and Connor, died. Issac was leading that scavenging group. Eric and Alexi died four days ago also when Issac was leading them. 2 weeks prior a couple more died… Issac was also… leading at the time. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d say he’s killing them.” She snorts and elbows her friend for being so bold with her words.
“Don’t say that. It’s not like those men were helping out round town anyways. Edward was a drunk and tried to drink all the alcohol that we’ve been using for wounds.” Rolling her eyes but it does seem strange that people have been dying. “Besides… it was zombies that killed them.” Patting her pants as since Issac would always come back to tell the harrowing tale of the dead outside, “that’s bound to happen at this point.”
“I’m just saying.” Angelica raises her hands. Her eyes flickering as some of the men come around. A look of disgust on Angelica’s face and she laughs. She wishes she would’ve meet her in university. “Here comes the dicks.” Her arms crossed. She knows her friend’s just upset because she’s been on ‘cleaning duty’. Some old fart told her that it’s better for a woman to be doing a ‘womans job’.
She’s just glad that— “Eve!” Speak of the devil. Issac comes running up with a wide grin. All teeth in it as he eyes her up and down making her bite back a shiver.
“That ain’t my name.” Gritting through her teeth as politely as she can. He’s been insistent on calling her that. It was cute in the beginning but now it’s just downright annoying. “What’s going on?”
“You’ll always be my Eve.” He laughs, his hands on his hips. Leaning forward, “No, no, just wanted to tell you that they’re passing out some more rations.” Her eyebrows perk up and even Angelica looks shocked. Angelica’s lips purse as she stands closer.
“Thought we were running low?” He looks at Angelica, his fingers flexing a lil as his left foot shifts a bit.
“We are but,” he pauses as he looks back from the friend to her. “We found some deer a couple weeks ago and we’ve been getting it ready to share it. Isn’t that wonderful, Eve?” He steps closer getting more in her space.
“Couple weeks ago?” Angelica muses and is shoulders tense a bit. “You mean when you came back with nothing?” Her arms crossed as she ain’t buying it. Angelicas’ never liked Issac, been more vocal about him being a creep and honestly that’s what she loves about Angelica. She’s never been afraid to speak her mind. “Came back with nothing except some men dead save for your friends. Strange ain’t it?” He turns his head towards her, his green eyes staring at her as his hands flexes again.
“We found a deer but didn’t want to say anything incase it’s infected. As for the men that died, I told you. Zombies attacked us.”
“Was that before or after you found this miraculous deer?”
Her hand touches on Angelica’s shoulder as Issac and her are having a stand off. The atmosphere shifting and she swears she could hear a pin drop. “Angelica.” She says and then looks to Issac and her, “A deer was found that’s all that matters.” Her friend scoffs and backs away. Walking away to cool off..
“You should’t be friends with her, Eve.” Watching Angelica leave before he turns and faces her fully. “My dads gonna announce some things when the food is passed out in the church. I’ll save you a seat.” He doesn’t offer, he never offers and always expects her to sit next to him.
“I appreciate that but I’m already sitting with Angelica.”
His hand reaches up and puts a hair behind her ear. It takes everything in her to not shove his hand away. “A pity. You need better friends.” A grin spreads on his face and she takes a step back.
Later that night when the food from the deer was passed the priest announced that he will be taking more of a leadership role, “Just until a vote happens.” He smiles wide and some of the men and even the woman are happy about it. Angelica had her concerns about it but nothing could be done. A couple months go by and the ones that tried to be leader would either get sick or somehow die. Of course, her friend called it suspicious.
“Georgie was the last person to try for it and he went on a scavenging group and somehow died by a zombie attack.” She says hotly, she hasn’t let it go and has spoken about it again and again. “Georgie was built like a brick house and knew his way with a knife and you’re telling me that he somehow died but not Issac or Issac’s friends?” She scoffs and scrubs the dishes.
It has been suspicious. Especially with the way things have been turning within the group. More and more women are put in ‘womanly’ roles. The men have outright refused to wash or clean things. Mandatory church meetings whenever the priest feels ‘called’ to say something too. Even she’s been takin off the scavenging groups finally. The men even tried to take her fathers rifle from her.
Doesn’t help that people have been on edge, everyone thinks the rations might be bad or spoiled since a good amount have been getting sick. “I’m not saying you’re wrong, but you need to keep it down. Ange,” her friend walks off in a huff, “Ange, come on.” Her hand reaches out and grabs hers. “I trust you. You know I do. If you say it’s weird then I believe you.” Her voice softer as she looks at her friend.
“Look I think we sho—“ the sound of a bell ringing cuts her off. “Great.” Glaring in the direction of the church. “What has he been called to speak about now.” Normally the loud noises would attract the attention of the zombies but cars and some wooden fences have been used as walls. Along with patrols, their relatively safe. “Let’s get this over with.”
The people move closer to the church, the cold making people bundle up as much as possible. Texans aren’t built for the cold. More for heat and crazy hurricanes. Everyone thinks it’s somewhere near February. Maybe early April since sometimes it can still be cold. One of the reasons why everyone’s been snappy lately. Typically, animals should be coming back since Spring is slowly creeping up. “Yeah,” she murmurs in agreement, “Let’s hear what he has to say now and move along.”
The priest smiles at everyone coming in, not like anyone has a choice. His Bible prepped as he speaks on the pulpit. He drones on and on about sin and that the sinners outside the walls are trying to lead people astray, the sinners being the zombies and anyone not in town. Something she’s found weird. He keeps speaking and she looks around bored until he says something that makes her tense. “And as for the lovely woman of our town. God has put on my heart that it is now time for us to repopulate the earth. Even some of the man has said that they’ve felt God’s call to marry some of the woman here.”
Her blood runs cold as she can feel eyes on her. Angelica moves her hand to grip hers. “I would be more than happy to marry off people in our lovely town. I think it’s time for marriage and eventually… children.” The smile he gives doesn’t feel right. She doesn’t like the way he says children. Doesn’t like how she just knows Issac is staring at her. Hair standing up on the back of her neck.
Finally, the sermon ends and she leaves quickly with Angelica in tow. “We need to leave.” Angelica pulls her aside. “I don’t like this one bit. Not shittin on any Christian here but this feels more like a man-made call than God’s call.” And she can’t help but agree. They know they can’t just outright leave. They have no preserves and no way of knowing how bad it is out there since they aren’t allowed out anymore. None of the woman are.
Tensions rising in the town as the men have made proposals but the woman that have been proposed to would say no. The priest would mention how it isn’t right to go against God’s word but he understood by saying, “The ladies are just nervous about having such fine suitors.”
Things changed in the coming months, when Spring slowly started getting warmer. Summer on the horizon. People are still dying on the scavenging groups and people aren’t getting as sick from the rations. Unmarried women are no longer allowed anywhere without a chaperon because of ‘safety’ reasons. “Ladies aren’t as strong as our fellow men. The Lord has implored that we protect the weak and feebler bodies.”
Issac has been more and more insistent with being her chaperone even with Angelica always being around. He’s been hovering more around her, and she hates it especially when he keeps getting in her bubble. Someone tugs on her hand and then pulls her into a closet. “Hey!”
“Shh!” A hand presses to her and she relaxes as she recognized that Angelica is the one that grabbed her. “They’re kicking out some of the woman that has been saying no to getting married.”
“What?”
“Lily, you remember her? Button nose Lilly,” she nods and Angelica continues, “Sam’s been trying to marry her for weeks now. I just overheard Issac saying that he and the men are going to take her stuff and kick her out.”
“You can’t be serious.”
“Dead fucking serious.” Her stare hard as she leans against the wall. “We need to leave.”
“And go where?”
“Anywhere but here. I’ve told Tommy no 10 times already. If I’m going to get kicked out then I want to do it on my own terms.” Her hand reaches out and grabs hers. “Come with me. No more Issac. No more town. Just us.” Her thumbs rub on her hand. “We can leave this all behind us. Finally visit New York like you were telling me about.”
Thinking it over as she always does, careful and cautious, as she looks at Angelica. “Ange, I…”
“Look I.. I like you,” her eyes widen but Angelica still speaks, “and I don’t want to leave if you don’t. I’ll get kicked out anyways but Issac.” Her face sours. “I know he won’t let you leave. He’s been obsessed with you. I don’t like it. I don’t like how he stares at you.”
“You like me?”
“Is that all you got out of what I said?” Angelica frowns and then slowly smiles. Pulling her closer as she smiles. “Yes, dingus. I like you. Have for a while and I—“ the sound of a bell ringing again and she growls in frustration. Stepping back but a hand grabs Angelica and pulls her close to press a chaste kiss that makes her gasp.
“I like you to.”
“You Motherfucker.” A blush spreading and she glares lightheadedly. Holding her hand as they walk out the closet to listen to what the priest has to say. The sermons have been getting more and more strict. More far-right Christian ideals. The priest stands at the front of the church welcoming everyone in like he always does. His beady eyes stare at her and as she holds Angelica’s hand.
They sit at a back pew, whispering their plan as the priest talks. The men saying their amens as the woman, at least some of them are speaking. “It is with a heavy heart that I must say that Lily White will no longer be in our town.” Some gasps in the congregation as she holds tighter to Angelica’s hand. “From now on, a woman must marry if they are for their hand in marriage. The men have all been called to marry certain woman. To deny that is to deny God. We cannot allow sin and disobedience to be in our town.” They both look at each other and as soon as the sermon ends they nearly run out.
Green eyes watching as they rush out. Not stopping until they are in their shared room. “We need to leave, Ange.” Angelica nods and immediately starts packing their things.

Sex & Healing Potions by sodamnrad - E, one-shot - Draco knew her body.Every scar and ailment since he’d started healing her. When she was angry—at Ron for being an arse about how she handled an arrest, at Harry for getting all the best cases, at Robard’s blatant sexism towards witches on the team—Draco would circle his fingers into that sore point on her neck and her words would melt away and her eyes would drop to half-mast and he’d take her to bed until nothing mattered but the present moment.
A Hint of Cherries by Bookloverdream (Blessedindeed), Lady_Andalion - T, one-shot - Draco Malfoy is living a nightmare. Only one thing can distract him: keeping score of his verbal sparring matches with Granger.(That, and the scent of her stupid, delicious hair. Did he say delicious? He did not.)But Draco is playing a dangerous game; one that could have serious consequences. A sixth-year tale of enemies-turned-frenemies.I think we all know where this is going. I hope you enjoy the journey.
Hospital Pas de Deux by echoesofmyfootsteps, RaymondShaw - T, one-shot - Hermione's Tuesday night shift in the hospital wing should have been an uneventful affair. Instead she finds herself tasked with curing all manner of complicated charms for her fellow 8th year students, one of whom has a very unique curse: Draco Malfoy, who leaps and twirls with unexpected alacrity, performing part of an iconic ballet dance. The problem? He can only be cured if someone dances it with him. And the only person who can do it is Hermione herself. Part of DoubleTrouble Fest. Prompt: 8th year - hospital wing - Draco's unexpected ballet skills
The Lion, The Snake and The Science Museum by janelealart, pandora_rose_xo - G, one-shot - On a rare day off together, Hermione finally convinces Draco to let her show him Muggle London and all the wonders it holds - well some of them. They can't do everything in a day.

If it's all in my head tell me now (tell me I've got it wrong somehow) by emsallthat_art (emsallthat), gemgirl28 - T, 5 chapters - This would be the third annual Malfoy Spring Benefit Gala, an event that took place in the Manor’s gardens and raised money for a different charity each year. The first year it was a fund that would subsidize the cost of potions for those with incurable ailments, such as Lycanthropy. Last year it was to benefit St. Mungo’s, specifically the Janus Thickey Ward. This year it was school supplies for underprivileged children. And it was all utter horse shite. The gala "just so happened" to be the same night as a benefit and awards gala at Oxford. The first year it was a coincidence. The second year it was odd, but Draco dismissed it. This year he couldn’t ignore the truth. His parents were intentionally planning an event the same night as the Muggle event Hermione invited him to. or Draco doesn't realize he's being forced to choose between his parents and Hermione until it's too late.
the dragon prince by emsallthat_art (emsallthat), where_ivy_grows - not rated, one-shot - Draco could think of a thousand ways a man of his age might choose to spend his Saturday night. Twenty six, single, good-looking, and heir to a not-insubstantial fortune—any other man in his position might have preferred to go out, socialise, maybe find somebody to take home for the night. And yet, here he was. Twenty-six, single, good-looking, rich, and… currently babysitting a precocious six-year-old with a knack for worming her way into his cold, cold heart.
Tear The Moon by Maria81, Pia_Bartolini - E, WIP - This wasn’t what he wanted, when the ritual fires were lit and incantations uttered. It was supposed to draw in a Muggle, some passerby unfortunate enough to be in the vicinity when sacrifices were demanded. Not a witch. And absolutely, definitely, one hundred percent not this specific witch. This was a cock-up of absolutely catastrophic proportions.* * * *Canon divergent sixth year fuck-or-die.Yeah. I went there.
Autumn Falls by Efinna, NordicNightshade - T, one-shot - “Hermione looked through the diamonds of lead that latticed the windows of the college library. The falling leaves reminded her that another year had somehow passed and the forlorn feeling haunting her since leaving Hogwarts was still lingering.“
How to Catch a Lucky Star by ambereyedsnek, RaymondShaw, thisisanomdeplume - E, 2 chapters -  Before the war, Hermione had nightmares about space. It was cold, black, and lonely. Space is also dangerous, and full of things one might run into. When she'd wake, she'd thank her lucky stars.
Egyptian Dust and Wanderlust by Ash_ling_ook, Maria81 - E, 11 chapters -  Why on Earth did I write a sexy adventure/horror story starring Draco and Hermione with a heavy-ish side of (platonic) Ron? Lord help me, I don't know…but it's 'The Mummy' AU that I didn't think anyone cared for but I needed to write. As it begins, Hermione is in a career she always dreamed of as an archivist who travels to foriegn countries. So why is she feeling so stuck? Draco is wasting his time in a prison cell in Azkaban after a less than desirable business venture he pursued out of boredom and maybe a bit of rebellion. Is he truly feeling apathetic about life post-war or has he just not been challenged by the right person? Ron makes an outlandish discovery bolstered by the enticement of riches. His need for help on his quest brings him to Hermione. The curious circumstances of his discovery lead them to Draco. What they uncover in the hidden sands of Egypt sets forth an unexpected mission to save the planet. A Dramione romance set in the world of 1999's epic blockbuster story, The Mummy. (Some original characters from The Mummy have been used).
A Study in Red by emilyinwonderland, emsallthat_art (emsallthat) - M, WIP -  Draco Malfoy is a life-time member of the Death Eaters, a mafia organization that has ruled London for generations. When a rival gang threatens Draco's business, he fights to protect his honor and save Hermione Granger, who's been caught in the cross-fire.
Mirror, Mirror by Lostinthenightrain, meare - M, one-shot - Curse Breaker Hermione Granger disappears from the Malfoy Manor. The only suspect - Draco Malfoy.
Lavender and Sunshine; Love of Mine. by Teamtuttle, Tiny_Q - M, one-shot -  After a passionate night together and a week of chasing, Draco finally crosses paths with Hermione.
I Want Her by janelealart, leydileyla - M, one-shot -  The second I’d apparated in their front yard, she was the first thing that I saw. Not Potter and his wife smiling foolishly at me, not the grand villa that he spent his summers at, not the beautiful orchard that surrounded us. The first thing my brain registered was her in that damn white sundress, sitting on the balcony above the entrance of the building. Her head, adorned with those dreadful curls, buried in a book as it always was. She hadn’t even bothered to glance my way to acknowledge my presence. As though I was nothing. Insignificant. And it was enough to drive me up a fucking wall.
Honor Among Thieves by Bookloverdream (Blessedindeed), incognitotoro - E, one-shot - A Dramione Cat-Burglar AU for Dramione Double the Trouble Fest. The eerie moonlight illuminated his pale skin and a flash of white-blond hair that had escaped his hood as he gazed down at his prize, her prize. The eye of Dionysus, sparkling in his outstretched palm. The very sight of him irked her. The sheer arrogance of it. No disillusionment charms, no disguises, not even bothering to stick to the shadows, the cocky little-“Your disillusionment charms could use some work.” He called, his voice soft and smooth, but still cutting through the quiet night air like a knife through butter.
Balefire Bright by DarkoftheMoon, WinteryMix - M, one-shot - In a nearby town the muggles lit bonfires and danced in colorful costumes to celebrate May Day while Hermione Granger settled in a small clearing for Beltane. It was an ancient festival, one that was celebrated around the world in many ways and under many names. But here, in her circle of ancient rowan trees, she would not create a May pole. Nor would she wear a white dress and flower crown. Beltane, she learned, was a time for power.
The Scent of Forever by Ceilidhchaos, KoraKwidditch - E, one-shot -  Auror Draco Malfoy saved his partner Hermione Granger from a werewolf on their last assignment, but at his own expense. He's been in a coma for nearly two weeks and the prognosis is beginning to look grim. However, Hermione has refused to be removed from the bedside of the partner that she feels much more than camaraderie for, hoping that when he finally wakes up she can find out if he feels the same.
His Golden Girl by ambereyedsnek, Stein048 - M, one-shot - Draco returns to Hogwarts to complete his 8th year, only to find that he shares almost his entire schedule with Hermione Granger. Oddly enough, she doesn't seem to hate him as he thought she would. This is one of my first attempts at fluff with no stuff. Just a feel-good piece. beta reader- thisisanomdeplume
What the Portraits Saw by RegretfulPrince, Schmem_14 - M, one-shot - Portraits are meant to be seen and not heard, or so you've been led to believe. Verity the Virgin is merely the portrait of a simple girl painted into an unimaginative pastoral scene. Her world is upended when she catches a mysterious thief trying to make off with some Malfoy family valuables.A slightly unhinged tale of seeing and being seen, and perhaps the death of Verity's innocence as well. What would her mother say?
Just Five Years by RaymondShaw, Stein048 - M, one-shot - Draco finds himself bound to Hermione Granger by a Marriage Law.Artwork provided by the talented RaymondShaw. (A thank you to my beta-reader Slytherclaw_xo )
The Unexpected turns in Draco Malfoy's Life by Iamnotanidiot - T, one-shot - There were many things that happened in last four years in Draco Malfoy's life that were completely unexpected. His mother, Narcissa Malfoy, going behind Voldemort's back to join the Order? Yes, unexpected. His father voluntarily joining him and his mother to the Order, and that too without throwing any tantrums? Completely  unexpected. Dating and falling in love with his infuriatingly stubborn, hot-headed, know-it-all, childhood nemesis? You've got to be kidding him if you thought that he had it planned, leave alone expected. Even after all of these unexpected turns in his life, Draco certainly did not except to become a father at twenty. Not in the middle of a full-fledged war.
This fest is ongoing.

Have you also had the misfortune of looking at the Naruto meme subreddit, too? My word, like once a week, there's a "Sakura's useless" joke posted somewhere in there.
Oh! Another excuse I hate people tossing around is, "It's a shonen written specifically for boys, not a shojo for girls, what do you expect? 🙄". Or another "great" deflection from criticizing the sexism in shonen: "Well, shojo has poorly written MALE characters, and THEY'RE not called out for it! ✅♟️". (That's not the checkmate you think it is! Everyone finds poorly written characters in general very annoying, that person just isn't looking for them.)
No one even get me started on the people who bring up Fullmetal Alchemist either! They bring up FMA as their ONE example of an anime with well-written female characters; like that anime's existence alone completely negates the dozens upon dozens of terrible ones! Bad writing is bad writing, no matter the genre; and it's baffling to me how weird some folks are about gender...
I do not have reddit but i do have Facebook and dear GOD is it a shit show. Arguments over who’s more ‘useless’ between Sakura and Hinata. Comments about how Tsunade is trash because she didn’t return Jiraiya’s feelings (URGE I HATE IT), and then every single thing is about propping up character’s like Itachi and Minato and shitting on EVERY SINGLE OTHER CHARACTER.
I loath it but i check facebook for family and the f***ing algorithm got me because of one drawing i shared
And wholey crap, ya no. One anime with good female character’s does not at all negate the other bad ones. Like ya, talk about it so people watch it but people should still be calling out sexist (or racist homophobic transphobic or other terrible writing). Like, i love dragon ball. Grew up on it. Will NEVER shit up about how they did all the girls dirty except Bulma (who was always used as the ‘sexy girl’ joke in dragon ball for all the pervy guys. Especially master rochi). Like one girl choosing family over continuing her martial arts carrer is ok (and something i hate about naruto fandom is that they refuse to recognize that s sexist as the writing is not all the girls are housewives. Hinata is which makes sense for her character/arc, but the only other two we can assume are housewives are Karui and Temari which i think is BS. Nothing in their stories say’s ‘would be happy being a housewife’ to me. Sakura and Ino are both working mother’s, with Sakura (as much as people may hate her) seeving a sort of single mother role since sasuke is never home.) but when they made Videl do the same thing with her only fighting being as a team with gohan i got annoyed. She’s my fav dragon ball character alongside gohan and i think she deserved to be a top martial artist among regular ass people. Like krillian level.
Aa for ‘useless male characters in Shojo’ i only remmember a few anime’s but like… not really? Tuxedo mask could be maybe the best example but he’s also constantly showing up to help and support sailor moon. In card capture sakura i recall the main male character being quite useful and having a great character arc. So i’m calling bs on all Shojo having terrible male character’s
It’s Shonin that is by far worse with treating the ‘non dominent sex’ as a secondary thought instead of actual characters

I'm amazed someone has the same thoughts I have in regards to Dragon Ball's Saiyan hybrids. I mean, I wish Pan got a better deal and I want to like her so much, but GT treated her so badly.
It's nice to find people who share your opinions!
I feel as if all the hybrids were treated like trash. The only one who got proper development and grew into his power was Gohan. He's the only one who had a tail as well.
GT had interesting storylines but kid Goku was annoying and Pan was way over her head. It's been a while since I watched GT so some details are a bit fuzzy. When I watched GT as a kid, I liked it well enough. It was not as great as the previous series but it was ok. The only highlight was SS4. Plus it was nice having consequences for dragonball usage. It was the best idea of the series and a full-circle solid ending.
I did not dislike Pan. She had good moments (eg. wanting to help with fights). However, she is not special as a Saiyan hybrid. If she were human, maybe I would be more impressed. But she was literally a damsel in almost all the fights she was involved in. For example, with the dark dragons, the girl was constantly being absorbed or held hostage. Plus we never got the sense that she was growing as a fighter. There was also that creepy pedophilic episode with the freaky doll guy! She deserved better. I'm still salty that she can't even transform. Some fans argue that this is due to DNA dilution but I beg to differ! Goku and Vegeta Jr. can transform at young ages like Trunks and Goten! These boys are like 1/16 Saiyan or less! Why can't Pan transform?! I am almost tempted to claim sexism.
In general, the hybrids are just plain misused. With Gohan, we got a pretty good hybrid situation. He has his father's fighting ability but his mom's fire and heart. Krillin and Goku were able to reason with him in his great ape form due to his human side in the fight with Vegeta. He felt like a hybrid.
The others just feel like humans with Saiyan powers. I wish we could have learnt more about Saiyan culture. We only had superficial things revealed to us: food, fighting, non-changing hair, desire for strong mates, zenkai boost. None of the hybrids knows anything about Saiyan culture which is partly Vegeta's fault.
To make matters arguably worse, half the hybrids don't even look Saiyan. I like Bulma but her genes are not Saiyan friendly. None of her kids looks Saiyan. Compared to Gohan and Goten who have Saiyan features like spiky hair.
Sorry about the tangential rant but there were so many missed opportunities. Bulla/Bra and Pan were our chance to get girl boss Saiyans. We're talking about the daughter of the PRINCE of Saiyans himself plus Goku's grandkid. I don't expect them to match Gohan but at least Goten and Trunks level. But no, both girls can't transform and one of them does not even fight. Pan had the spirit to be a great character but she could not back it up.
To add insult to injury, Goku and Vegeta's descendants don't know what super Saiyan even is (they called it "turning blonde"). What a shame.

Played the Hogwarts game via my brother via a friend of my brother's who bought it (idiot)...... It is........ Hm. The dialogue in it is terrible. That is to say, lifeless, often pointless. Fig keeps talking over you the first hour which is not really endearing. The pandering is kinda irksome (headmaster black, professor weasely). The games copy all of the movies mistakes, including giving the students and teachers etc. trousers and skirts and blouses instead of GOWNS. Hogwarts is so so so quiet. And kinda.....weirdly....marbled? So far. The nice goblin is indeed less hook-nosed. The Goblins are evil for no stated reason yet. They just...are? The evil goblin obviously has a classic lower class accent or whatever. THUG GOBLIN. Absolutely insane writing choice to have Miriam (Jewish name?) be prof figs WIFE who DIED only MONTHS AGO, and have fig respond with zero emotion to a message from her that wasn't sent to him in the first place nor any response to a good friend's death right in front of him (who was said to be a good apparator two minutes ago but doesn't apparate away from a dragons mouth), murdered presumably by the same people. Why are there 40 students in the whole great hall. There's a good progression of spell learning so far, but extremely railroaded first two hours of walking with some NPC at snails pace. Wayyyy too many things to collect, too overwhelming. Collecting is as simple as walking by and casting a spell so far - bland. So many obvious thing in the castle so far that I simply don't have access to yet. annoying. The combat is extremely simple. This is almost a-blind-dog-clicking-could-beat-this Lego Harry Potter game level. No IDEA nor any INDICATION why main character is transferring in in fifth year having never studied magic before. There isn't even any game mechanic reason for this, nor in-story. There is no memorable soundtrack, which is impressive (derogatory) for a Harry Potter game. There also generally IS NO music. Weird.
Positive: all the character options are pretty and feature a quite diverse range of (ethnic) features which are easily mixed and matched (though skewed). another negative: Dont know how I ended up in a skirt though, I guess the character creation railroads you into certain costume through the pre-sets. Despite being able to select voices and wizard/witch status independently. Even though lots of girl NPC's have trousers. Ironically some letter by some professor implies sexism doesn't actually exist in the magical world - only in Muggle world. A fine fantasy if I didn't know about the irony of it all....also quite a retcon. And a double edges sword about SUPERIOR witches/wizards.
I like doing tasks and so I WAS sucked into the very simple doing tasks game loop. Exploring isn't really very fun tbh.... There aren't really secret passages so far? There isn't any platforming... Peeves looks solid and not like a ghost? The castle is populated but not exactly bustling. Not quite lifeless but so damn chill does anybody go to classes?
The fantasy this game presents is being a magical prodigy for no discernible reason and acing all classes, competitions, duels etc. Literally, pleasure to have in class, sir. That is the protagonist's only character trait: teacher's pet and optionally: arrogant lil shit. I actually chose my characters face for its neutral bitch face, but the game kept forcing her to smile in the starter cut scenes.
Where's quidditch wtf. It's not SO hard to make an avatar fly and make the player awkwardly catch a ball in mid-air. Anyway. It looks good. It just doesn't.....feel like Hogwarts much. Not exactly magical. Maybe I've outgrown it completely to the depths of my heart. Maybe every further iteration of this stretched-thin franchise's products only gets worse. Maybe Rowling's undeniable sense for what appeals to the imagination is missing. Maybe if I didnt know where this is going i could simply enjoy doing my tasks, and the so far clunky, stupid but 'fine' to mediocre experience. Or maybe it just sucks.

MASTERLIST
I update this list everytime I watch and review a show.
Disclaimer: These reviews are subjective and only reflect my opinions. There are no drama on that list that I’ve turned off and all are worthy of a watch.
Recs welcome!
#1 Crash landing on you
(사랑의 불시착)
Grade: A++
Genre: Modern, Star-Crossed lovers
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
Son Ye-jin (who plays Yoon Se-ri) and Hyun Bin (Ri Jeong-hyeok) have amazing chemistry and every episode plays out like the chapters of an excellent fanfiction. Classic romantic tropes, humour, angst, action, CLOY has it all. Moreover, if you’ve never watched a Kdrama in your life, CLOY is a great starting point—not only will it introduce you to Korean culture but also to popular tropes and codes of the genre.
#2 Rookie historian Goo Hae-ryung
(신입사관 구해령)
Grade: A++
Genre: Historical, Age gap
Episodes: 20
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
Delightful from end to end, with lots of humour and an engaging story. The romance between Goo Hae-ryung and himbo-prince Dowon will make your heart go soft, especially if you’re into reverse gender dynamics (she’s older and kisses him first *le gasp*)
#3 Memories of the Alhambra
(알함브라 궁전의 추억)
Grade: B+
Genre: Modern; Sci-fi; Fantasy
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: No
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
Intriguing premise, great cast and tons of special effects but the romance between Jin-woo (Hyun Bin) and Hee-joo (Park Shin-hye) won't go down in history. On top of that, the ending is a bit wishy-washy in that annoying “maybe there’s more to come” kind of way. Give us a clear cut ending, damnit!
#4 Good doctor
(굿 닥터)
Grade: B-
Genre: Modern, Medical drama
Episodes: 20
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
Good heart but the writing is really clumsy at times and the hospital politics don’t make an awful lot of sense. On the bright side, Joo Won is great in the role of Park Si-on.
Note: I haven’t watched the American remake so can’t compare.
#5 My love from the star/ You from the stars
(별에서 온 그대)
Grade: A
Genre: Modern, Sci-fi, fantasy, Star-Crossed lovers
Episodes: 21
Happy Ending: Yes-ish
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
Jun Ji-hyun is absolutely stellar in the role of Cheon Seong-yi, a ditzy Hallyu* star whose career is going south while Kim Soo-hyun plays the emotionally closed-off alien to perfection. Lots of pinning, a dose of angst mixed with a pinch of wacky humor.
*Hallyu means “Korean wave” in Chinese and refers to the popularity and spreading of Korean pop-culture outside of Korea.
#6 Hwarang The Poet Warrior Youth
(화랑)
Grade: B
Genre: Historical, Coming of age, fake siblings who catch feels
Episodes: 20
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
Cute boys and interesting lore rooted in true facts (the bone rank system and the real Hwarang, the “Flowering Knights” of the Silla kingdom) but the story drags. I guess I expected more bromance and frolicking and less angst. Lastly, the main girl starts off quirky and fun but they quickly transform her into a sobbing mess which becomes real annoying real fast.
#7 Love in the Moonlight / Moonlight Drawn by Clouds (구르미 그린 달빛)
Grade: A
Genre: Historical, Romance, Coming of age, Posing as the opposite sex
Episodes: 18
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
A classic tale of a girl raised as a boy who ends up in a situation where she needs to do her best to not blow her cover while catching feels (As someone raised on Versailles no bara and Ribbon no Kishi, it remains one of my favourite tropes)
Sweet romance and good characters. The fact that Crown prince Lee Yeong doesn't turn emo when he starts developing feelings for Eunuch Ra-on before discovering she's a girl is the cherry on top of the cake.
#8 Something in the rain
(밥 잘 사주는 예쁜 누나)
Grade: C
Genre: Modern
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: Yes, but it still doesn't make you happy
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
Wasted potential!
Great start but the characterization falls apart quickly and you end up wondering why the main characters keep sabotaging their lives. By the end, despite their reunion, you're left with the impression they've learned nothing and that their relationship is doomed to fall apart.
On top of it all, watching Jin-ah fight sexism in the workplace and gaining nothing is depressing af (I don’t need realism in my escapism, thank you very much).
Too bad because Son Ye-jin and Jung Hae-in look really good together and the acting is top-notch. My advice is to watch the first 8 episodes then make up your own ending in your head.
#9 Moon embracing the sun
(해를 품은 달)
Grade: B+
Genre: Historical,Star-Crossed lovers
Episodes: 22
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
A traditional historical drama with all the tropes that go with the genre + a hint of esoterism.
If you love ill-fated relationships, tragic love triangle, evil queens, and amnesia, this is the show for you. Beware, the interrogation/torture scenes are rather brutal.
#10 My sassy girl
(엽기적인 그녀)
Grade: B-
Genre: Historical, Rom-Com
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
Cute and lighthearted but easily forgettable. Still worth a watch thanks to Joo Won & Oh Yeon-seo's chemistry.
#11 Coffee Prince
(커피프린스 1호점)
Grade: A
Genre: Modern, Posing as the opposite sex
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
Solid story, great cast but be ready for a lot of bickering.
Yoon Eun-hye is a precious bean who manages to sell the story of Eun-chan, a struggling androgynous working-class girl who mistakenly gets hired by a rich guy to play his boyfriend, then becomes his employee, then falls for him while not correcting his assumptions about her gender. Opposite her, Gong Yoo (from Train to Busan fame) is 🥰🥰🥰
Sidenote: Despite Han-kyul's struggle to accept his feelings for Eun-chan, homosexuality isn't treated as a joke or a shameful thing. The one time he goes seek “medical help”, the doctor is depicted as an old, clueless idiot. And honestly, the story would work too if Eun-chan was a guy.
#12 My girlfriend is a Gumiho/My girlfriend is a Nine-tailed fox
(내 여자친구는 구미호)
Grade: B+
Genre: Modern; Fantasy
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Viki - Available on Netflix (FR) too
Campy and goofy. It does look a bit dated (it’s from 2010) and the story is a little predictable but Lee Seung-gi as Cha Dae-woong, an aspiring action film actor and Shin Min-ah as “Gu Mi-ho” the nine-tailed fox looking for a mate are super cute. The show is also a good introduction to Korean folklore.
#13 Goblin / Guardian: The Lonely and Great God / The Lonely and Great God – Goblin
(쓸쓸하고 찬란하神 – 도깨비)
Grade: A+
Genre:  Modern, Historical, Fantasy, bromance
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: Yes-ish
Watched on: Viki
Unpopular opinion but since I’m not into older guys, I wasn’t invested in the romance between Bride and Goblin until late in the series. I loved everything else though. The show has such a unique tone and atmosphere. It goes from super serious to goofy in no time. The cinematography is gorgeous (especially the historical sets) and you'll cry your eyes out.
#14 Healer
(힐러)
Grade: A
Genre:  Modern
Episodes: 20
Happy Ending: Yes
If you're into toll broody guys and fearless smoll girls, you’ll love Healer. The story is great, the characters are great and the way Jung-hu (played by Ji Chang-wook) and Ji-an (Park Min-young) are horny for each other is peak drama! *chef kiss*
#15 Kangchi the beginning/Gu family book
(구가의 서)
Grade: B-
Genre: Historical, Fantasy
Episodes:
Happy Ending: No
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
Engaging coming of age story of a half-human half-gumiho looking for his place in this world. If it wasn't for the wishy-washy ending it could have been the perfect mix of action fantasy and romance.
Special mention for Dam Yeo-wool (played by Suzie Bae) who is a female character who's allowed to be a bit of everything at the same time (strong, kick-ass, funny, cute, romantic)
#16 Queen for seven days
(7일의 왕비)
Grade: A
Genre:  Historical, Romance, Villainous crush
Episodes: 20
Happy Ending: No
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
With that title don’t expect a HEA but there are plenty of sweet moments along the way to make you appreciate the journey.
Chae-kyung loves the Prince and the Prince loves Chae-kyung but the King wants to kill the Prince and Chae-kyung is loyal to the King but the King is a tyrant and everyone wants the Prince to take his throne. On top of that the King wants Chae-kyung. Big mess. Lots of feels.
The story is (very) loosely based on real-life Queen Dangyeong, which makes it even more poignant. I cried my eyes out at the end because I’m a big softy.
#17 Korean Odyssey
(화유기)
Grade: A-
Genre: Modern, Fantasy
Episodes: 20
Happy Ending: Kinda
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
The show (very loosely based on Journey to the West) has its faults including the wishy-washy ending and the fact that Jin Seon-mi/Sam-jang starts off as a doormat but I ended up liking the relationship developing between the assholish Monkey god and the naive human girl more than I expected.
The side characters are compelling, and the banter and bickering between the deities work really well. If you grew up with Dragon ball, you’ll have a blast trying to match-up the Japanese and Korean names of everyone without looking up Wikipedia.
Lastly, not something I imagined saying after seeing him in Gumiho and Gu family book but Lee Seung-gi as Son Oh-gong = BDE *fans herself* 🥵
#18 Strong Girl Bong-soon
(힘쎈여자 도봉순)
Grade: A-
Genre:  Modern, Super-Heroine
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: Yes

Trigger warning: Graphic depiction of violence against women
A++ super-heroine story, bad side characters
First, every girl should aspire to find a Min-hyuk in their life. Someone who'll love them because of their strength, and support them unconditionally. Someone who won't ask them to change or pretend to be somebody else.
Second, western media should learn that a super-heroine can HAVE IT ALL—the superpowers AND the love AND the family.
My only complaint with the show (and that's why I gave A- instead of A++) is the inclusion of many cringy side characters/situations that spoiled my overall enjoyment (see the caricatural flamboyant gay co-worker, Bong-soon’s mom hitting her dad, the mobsters...)
#19 The K2
(더 케이투)
Grade: B-
Genre: Modern, Political
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
The romance is bad and the political story far-fetched but Ji Chang-wook is 🔥🔥PEAK HOTTIE🔥🔥
Tumblr media
That being said, I didn’t completely dislike the political intrigue and it was interesting to see the good guy working for the villains (sort of).
#20 Weightlifting fairy Kim Bok-joo
(역도요정 김복주)
Grade: A+
Genre:  Modern, Coming of age
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
Uplifting coming of age story and super sweet romance. Bok-joo (Lee Sung-kyung) & Joon-hyung (Nam Joo-hyuk) are precious children on top of being cutie-patooties. Bok-joo’s insecurities hit hard, especially if you’ve ever been outside the norm of beauty standards.
I liked how the show normalizes therapy and taking care of your mental health.
In one word…
SWAG!
#21 The scholar who walks the night
(밤을 걷는 선비)
Grade: B
Genre:  Historical, Fantasy, Vampire, posing as the opposite sex
Episodes: 20
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
Guilty pleasure.
Don’t ask me about the details of the main storyline, I’ve already forgotten most of it. Sometimes all you need is a show where a hundred-something years old good vampire with a sad backstory and the main girl who is thirsty for the good vampire are fighting a sexy evil vampire.
PS: Did I mention the sexy evil vampire?
Tumblr media
#22 Romance is a bonus book
(로맨스는 별책부록)
Grade: A+
Genre: Modern, Friends to lovers
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
Imagine reading a relaxing book under a cozy blanket while sipping hot cocoa. That’s how that series made me feel.
Everything is sweet and soft from the characters' fluffy jumpers to the soft palette of color used for the sets. People make books and love books. There’s a mystery but no unnecessary angst. If you need a break from everything, jump in that ship.
#23 Hotel Del Luna
(호텔 델루나)
Grade: A-
Genre: Modern
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: Sorta
Watched on: Viki - Available on Netflix (FR) too
Interesting world-building and a good cast of side characters but the romance lacks a bit of oomph.
On the + side, the hotel sets are gorgeous and Man-wol's wardrobe is to kill for.
#24 Suspicious Partner
(수상한 파트너)
Grade: A-
Genre: Modern, Star-crossed lovers in an office
Episodes: 20
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
Toll serious who hates criminal falls for smoll weirdo falsely accused of murder. A must watch for anyone in search of a quirky romance.
#25 Touch your heart
(진심이 닿다)
Grade: A
Genre: Modern
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Viki
Tooth rotting sweetness. The series is just a pretext to watch two good looking people (Lee Dong-wook and Yoo In-na) being nice and awkward around each other. What do you need more? 0
Note: If you watched Goblin you can also pretend it's a spin-off series about the reincarnations of Grim Reaper and Sunny. 💡
#26 Because this is my first life
(이번 생은 처음이라)
Grade: A
Genre: Modern, Fake marriage
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
The Fake Marriage AU you’re looking for, mixed with slices of modern, messy, complicated life.
The main storyline revolves around Ji-ho an assistant drama screenwriter who struggles to find her place within the patriarchal structure of Korean society, and Se-hee, a socially incompetent computer designer who only cares for his cat and his mortgage. The way they end up in a fake marriage as well as the development of their relationship feels organic and doesn’t rely too heavily on comedy like it’s often the case with that trope.
The show also follows the stories of Ji-ho’s friends, Su-ji and Ho-rang who have different aspirations in life—Su-ji’s goal is to become CEO while Ho-rang only cares about becoming a housewife. I loved that the show makes a point to not pit women against each other and advocate living your life the way YOU want rather than trying to follow societal expectations of what love, work and marriage should look like.
Also they have the cutest cat.
#27 What's wrong with Secretary Kim?
(김비서가 왜 그럴까 )
Grade: A-
Genre: Modern
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Viki
I wish Secretary Kim had more agency in certain situations but the romance develops well and the horny moments are caliente 🥵🔥
#28 Where your eyes linger
(너의 시선이 머무는 곳에)
Grade: A++
Genre: Modern, BL, Coming of age, Friends to lovers
Episodes: 8
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Viki
Bite-size BL gem to devour in one sitting.
Stellar acting from the two leads and the balance between fluff and angst is just right. There's no graphic violence that sometimes plagues yaoi and BL and the story is believable. I got emo remembering my first love.
#29 Live up to your name
(명불허전)
Grade: A-
Genre: Modern, Historical, Time travel, Star-crossed lovers
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
Trigger warning for graphic depiction of violence
Big surprise. I was looking for a cheesy comedy but it was actually a thoughtful story about humanism. I even teared up a little.
Trigger warning for needles. They do some pretty impressive procedures with those acupuncture needles.
#30 W - Two Worlds Apart
(더블유)
Grade: A
Genre: Modern
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
Imaginary men > Real men, especially when they're played by Lee Jong-suk. Nuf’ said.
Imaginary men > Real men, especially when they're played by Lee Jong-suk.
The silly premise hides a solid story that keeps you on your toes and I was suprised by the rollercoaster of emotions I went through.

#31 Life
(라이프)
Grade: C
Genre: Modern
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: Kinda
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
Unless you want to learn how fucked up the private health sector is becoming in Korea, there's not much to gain watching this show.
The story starts off well though. The problem is that by the middle of the series the writers have dropped the main mystery (the circumstances surrounding the death of the director) to deliver an exposé on the political machinations of big corporations, and then shoehorn an explanation at the last minute (“it was all but a misunderstanding”). Very underwhelming.
The relationship between the two brothers played by Lee Dong-wook and Lee Kyu-hyung is the only bright spot.
#32 Pinocchio
(피노키오)
Grade: A-
Genre: Modern, Fake family members who catch feels
Episodes: 20
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
On paper, the story sounds a little crazy but it all comes together nicely.
Lee Jong-suk and Park Shin-hye have great chemistry and deliver a stellar performance as “uncle” and “niece” (not related by blood) who can’t fight the romantic feelings they harbor for one another. The main storyline has enough twists to keep you entertained and surprised.
My only complaint is that it drags a little. 16 episodes would have been enough.
#33 My Holo Love
(나 홀로 그대)
Grade: A
Genre: Modern, Sci-fi
Episodes: 12
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
Fake men > Real men
Imagine a Black Mirror episode about a love triangle between a woman suffering from face blindness, an emotionally supportive AI boyfriend and the disenchanted creator of said AI, minus the nihilism. *chef kiss*
#34 Legend of the blue sea
(푸른 바다의 전설)
Grade: B++
Genre: Modern, Fantasy, Fairy tale, Star-crossed lovers
Episodes: 20
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Viki
Park Ji-eu (the writer) read the little mermaid and decided to give her a happy ending. Great chemistry between Lee Min-ho and Jun Ji-hyun but the spark is missing for me.
The antics of modern-day mermaid Shim Cheong are a little predictable and Joon-jae needs to be less of a control freak at times but the story remains enjoyable. I was pleasantly surprised to see Shim Cheong’s character grow, making the power imbalance between the clueless mermaid and the con-artist less pronounced by the end of the series.
The side characters are interesting but underused, and I wish Tae-oh was more developed. On the other hand, the Joseon area sets and costumes are absolutely gorgeous (Don’t tell anyone but Joseon!Lee Min-ho is hotter than Modern!Lee Min-ho 🥵)
#35 Tale of Arang / Arang and the Magistrate
(아랑사또전)
Grade: B
Genre: Historical, Fantasy,
Episodes: 20
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
One word: Campy.
Interesting lore but the pacing is a little off—there’s a lot of back and forth between the characters and the locations and the love triangle doesn't add much.
#36 My ID is Gangnam Beauty / Gangnam Beauty
(내 아이디는 강남미인)
Grade: A+
Genre: Modern, Coming of age
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
If you’ve ever been bullied for your looks, you’re gonna bawl your eyes out.
The show does a great job of calling out the unhealthy beauty standards imposed on Korean women but the topic is universal enough for the story to resonate with everyone. I love that you never see Mi-rae’s old face because it’s not our perception of her lack of beauty that matters but the fact she suffers greatly. Don’t you hate in western shows when they take a beautiful actress, give her a pair of glasses or a fat suit and call her ugly, making sure the audience feels shittier about themselves? Here, the writers concentrate on Mi-rae’s transformation and her coping with the consequences of her decision to do plastic surgery.
It’s also not a revenge fantasy where the ugly duckling suddenly becomes the most popular girl at school. Being a “Gangnam beauty” leads to a new form of suffering.
Romance-wise, it’s the slowest burn of slow burns because Mi-rae and Do Kyung-seok are the most socially awkward beans on the planet. I love them, Your Honor.
#37 Tale of Nokdu
(조선로코-녹두전)
Grade: A
Genre: Historical, Posing as the opposite sex
Episodes: 32 x 30mns
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Viki - Now available on Netflix (FR)
Fun and lighthearted all the way through.
The story of a guy who puts on a dress to investigate a village of widows could have gone very wrong but it was well handled. It’s refreshing to see the classic trope of posing as the opposite sex reversed and Jang Dong-yoon is never cringy when he’s pretending to be Lady Kim Nok-soon.
#38 Bride of Habaek / Bride of the Water God
(하백의 신부 2017)
Grade: B
Genre: Modern, Fantasy
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
Content warning: Crime against fashion
Promising premise and lore (I'm interested in reading the original comics now) but the writing fails to deliver an epic romance and a cathartic ending. Moreover, the sets lack imagination (or money?) and in the end I failed to ever feel immersed in a fantasy world.
The unfortunate consequence of the clumsy writing is that the male characters who are meant to be arrogant/confident Gods (Habaek and By-ryeom) sound like they're negging their love interests more than wooing them, and the relationship between Mu-ra and By-ryeom particularly irked me.
#39 Strangers from Hell / Hell is other people
(타인은 지옥이다)
Grade: A+
Genre: Modern, Psychological Thriller
Episodes: 10
Happy Ending: Spoiler
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
Content warning: Violence
What a departure from everything else in that list! Absolutely worth a watch if you enjoy thrillers and shows like Hannibal. If psychological horror isn’t your cup of tea though, you might give it a pass.
The storyline and the characters are a little cliché (it goes with the genre) but the cinematography and photography are fantastic. You can notice how the pension becomes more and more sinister throughout the series via the use of dark greens and browns and pale yellows, as opposed to the mundanity and coldness of the city (greys, and cold blues).
Last but not least, the acting is top-tiers. Im Siwan does a great job at portraying Jong-woo, an aspiring crime novelist who slowly loses his marbles but the true revelation for me is Lee Dong-wook. After seeing him so many times in roles where he plays awkward yet charming men who can barely express emotions, I was intrigued to see him take on the role of a serial killer, and holy cow, he's the perfect mix of sinister and alluring. Towards the end of the series, his character Moon-jo acts like a black-hole whenever he appears in a scene—a towering, dark presence who sucks the light out of the room (If he carries any of that darkness in the upcoming Tale of Gumiho, it’s gonna be *chef kiss*).
#40 Empress Ki
(기황후)
Grade: A
Genre: Historical, posing as the opposite sex
Episodes: 51
Happy Ending: From a certain point of view
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
Trigger warning for violence against women (not graphic but implied)
51 episodes.
Fifty.One.Episodes.
That's a lot of episodes considering the story starts with the ending.
Did I enjoy this show? Yes, very much so. Do I think it's for everyone? Nope.
You'll enjoy Empress Ki if you're into old-school historical sagas or you wished Game of thrones had no gratuitous nudity and violence. If you’re looking for an historically accurate biography of the real empress Ki though, then look away because Empress Ki is basically a lengthy fanfiction trying to justify how the Goryeo native Seung-nyang married the wimpy Emperor of the Yuan dynasty whilst trying to portray her as loyal to her motherland and to her first love, the Crown Prince of Goryeo.
Personally, I didn’t care for the love triangle formed by Seung-nyang (Ha Ji-won), Wang-yoo (Joo Jin-mo) and Toghon Temür (Ji Chang-wook) but I liked the politics and the backstabbing. Also, contrary to GoT, the bad guys get their comeuppance at the end so it makes watching the side characters die less painful.
#41 Meow, the secret boy / Welcome
(어서와)
Grade: B-
Genre: Modern, Modern fantasy
Episodes: 24 x 35mns
Happy Ending: I guess
Watched on: Viki
How do I put it? It's not *terribad* but it's not *good* either.
I was super on board with the concept—if Lee Seung-gi can bang a nine-tailed fox in My girlfriend is a gumiho, I have zero issues with Sol ah, our heroine, falling in love with Hong-jo the cat-person after being dumped for no reason by Jae-sun her boyfriend—but it didn’t exactly develop that way, and as soon as they explained why Jae-sun had broken up with Sol-ah, the writers lost me because I like when things happen for a reason.
#42 Clean with a passion for now
(일단 뜨겁게 청소하라!!)
Grade: A-
Genre: Modern, Rom-Com
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
Super zany and tropey but that’s why it works so well. The only reason I’m giving it a minus is because it’s trying to be woke but in the end there’s still a lot of unsolicited grabbing and some iffy remarks/pick-up lines said by every male characters (IRL that’s the kind of story that ends up with a restraining order and a lawsuit for sexual harassment).
#43 Mystic pop-up bar
(쌍갑포차)
Grade: A
Genre: Modern, Fantasy
Episodes: 12
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
Trigger warning: Heavy themes (miscarriage, pregnancy, loss of a child, death of loved ones)
You know how the meme goes... Sometimes a family is a hot-tempered bar owner, a cursed kid and an ex-Afterlife-Police officer with a secret past.
It took me a few episodes to get into it, but once the characters were established it became really enjoyable.
The tone of the series leans toward wacky but the core of the story is actually pretty dark if you look into it. Every grudge they solve for their “clients” gives a clue about Wol-joo’s personal story and by the last episode I was crying my eyes out.
Last but not least, Wol-joo’s collection of modernized hanboks is *chef kiss*
#44 My secret Terrius
(내 뒤에 테리우스)
Grade: A
Genre: Modern, Action, Comedy, Bromance
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
An enjoyable action drama to watch with your family or your significant other.
Koreans prove that you can write a story about a black ops agent on the run who becomes a childminder without reeking of toxic masculinity. Contrary to American comedies where the manly-man-hero working undercover is incompetent and believes that working with children is a woman’s job and a waste of his manly-man talents until he has an epiphany of some sorts, Kim Bon (played by So Ji-sub) never once expresses discomfort to the idea of looking after two kids. In spite of his sober demeanor, he’s a caring and attentive person from the start and watching him gradually becoming a part of this spunky family while investigating a national security threat made my heart go awww.
Opposite him, fearless and resourceful mom Go Ae-rin (played Jung In-sun) brings a lot of energy, and the twins are absolutely adorable.
#45 Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo
(달의 연인 - 보보경심 려)
Grade: A--
Genre: Historical
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: No
Watched on: Random streaming site
Don’t get attached—Moon Lovers is the missing link between Empress Ki and Boys over flowers, but with a sad ending.
I did binge watch the series but there are some frustrating aspects to it that prevented me from giving a perfect score, notably the fact that Wang So remains possessive and demanding with Hae Soo throughout the years—for instance “You’re my person” is a romantic statement until it evolves into “You can never leave me.”
The other problem of the series is that Lee Ji-eun (UI) does cute and goofy really well, but she doesn’t have the emotional range needed to portray a character who goes through many heartbreaks and betrayals. As a result, Hae Soo appears a little fickle in her infatuations with the princes.
That being said if you’re a sucker for tragic romance and you believe that power corrupts even the purest of love, you’ll have a blast.
#46 Forest
(포레스트)
Grade: B++
Genre: Modern, Romance
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Viki
UST in the woods (Dat first kiss 🥵🥵🥵)
The characters and the story are a little cliché but who doesn’t love a story where the protagonists are clearly attracted to each other but can’t act on their desires because their moral values are opposite?
*slams fist*
San Hyeok is your typical heartless businessman who refuses to confront his childhood trauma, and Yeong Jae is a surgeon who suffers from panic attacks and cares too much about other people. They’re both good looking and fate brings them to a remote village in the middle of the forest where they have to share a house. Really, I wonder what’s gonna happen?
#47 100 Days My Prince / Hundred days husband
(백일의 낭군님)
Grade: B+
Genre: Historical
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Viki
Trigger warning: Important character death.
Cute and charming but also very annoying at times. Obviously, the story is tropey af (fake marriage doubled with amnesia, you can’t really beat that) but it also includes elements I’ve never seen in any other dramas like the fact that the Crown Princess is pregnant with another man’s child (le gasp!). The things that annoy me the most were the unnecessary flip-flopping of the heroine towards the end of the show for the sake of creating artificial drama (just let them be together FFS!) and the fact that the male characters take a lot of decisions for Yeon Hong-shim.
Romance wise, Do Kyung-soo and Nam Ji-hyun are really cute together but in the end I found myself more interested in the political intrigue and the side characters than the main romance because slow burn has its limit. In essence, it’s the perfect drama to watch with your conservative family because whilst the main couple is living under the same roof and is technically married they don’t get frisky.
#48 I Am Not A Robot (로봇이 아니야)
Grade: A++
Genre: Modern
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
Angsty with a good pay-off.
With a premise like that, things could have gone wrong really quickly but the writers managed to write a story that isn’t a man wanting to fuck a robot because real women are scary so big kudos for them. Seeing Min-kyu celebrating his Roomba’s birthday because he has no other friends will instantly melt your heart and from that point on you’ll cheer for his recovery. The show has the right amount of angst without becoming a mess and they handle the big reveal very well, making sure to show how hurt both Min-kyu and Ji-ah are by the situation, without making you doubt that they can find each other again. The other strong point of the show is that it’s not just about romance, it’s also about friendship and learning to let other people in your life.
The acting is incredible to the point that by the end I wondered if Yoo Seung-ho and Chae Soo-bin were making out in front of my salad or if I was still watching the characters Min-kyu and Ji-ah being lovey dovey.
#49 Sungkyunkwan Scandal (성균관 스캔들)
Grade: A
Genre: Historical, Posing as the opposite gender
Episodes: 20
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Viki
Hana zakari no kimi tachi he with gats.
This show checks so many boxes when it comes to my favourite tropes story-wise and character-wise that I instantly fell in love with it. It might feel a little dated for a younger audience and it definitely suffers from the second male lead syndrome (who wants unseasoned boiled chicken when there are not just one but two juicy rotisserie chickens on the table next to you?!) but it’s still very much enjoyable. Also, they don’t shy away from using the word “homosexuality” and having one of the second lead confessing to having romantic feelings for his friend (I’ll take any scrap of bi-representation, okay?)
#50 It’s Okay to not be okay  (사이코지만 괜찮아)
Grade: A
Genre: Modern
Episodes: 16
Happy Ending: Yes
Watched on: Netflix (FR)
Found family.
In spite of one ridiculous plot twist (that I was aware of when I started the show) this show has made me feel all the feelz. The three main actors all did a phenomenal job portraying their characters in all their complexity and fragility and I ended up crying so many cathartic tears in the second to last & the last episodes. The relationship between Sang-tae and Gang-tae is one of the best sibling relationships I’ve seen on-screen in a long time while the romance between Moon-yeong and Gang-tae blends perfectly elements of comedy and melodrama. Mental illness isn’t treated as something to be ashamed of, whilst showing that you can grow and recover from trauma and finding your own happiness.
PSA from my boyfriend, who dropped the show before the end:
The plot twist is so stupid that it takes away from the rest of the series. In my opinion it negated the positive portrayal of mental illness built up until then. They completely lost me.
^ We discussed a lot about it which is why I wanted to share his POV to balance my own review.

I feel like The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy isn't talked about enough so I compiled a very poorly written list of some of my favourite parts
Monty may have been very misguided about just how difficult it was for Felicity to succeed in the medical field but you can see our lad is drinking his Respect Women Juice every morning, thank you for your effort Monty
(Percy is already an expert in Respecting Women)
On that note I appreciate that at this point Monty and Felicity's relationship is basically
Monty: this is my sister Felicity, she is very brave and smart and we all adore her. Yes she's quite annoying too but I love her very much and I have no doubt that she will achieve amazing things with her life Felicity: this is my brother Monty and he's a rat bastard baby man. Yes I love him but more importantly he's a THOT
Our first impression of Sim is that she's annoyed by the excessive amount of white men in London
That guy just tackling Monty and causing them both to fall into the Thames, mmm whatcha sayy
It's great to finally see Felicity's perspective for many reasons but especially because in tggtvav we just see her through Monty's eyes, so it's all 'wow Felicity is so brave and strong and clever we would all be dead if not for her' whereas her inner monologue is actually just 'shit shit shit what do I know now shit'
MAX
Honestly as soon as Johanna was introduced I fell instantly in love with her
Felicity having to be like 'NO IT'S NOT BLOOD I JUST SPLIT AN ENTIRE GLASS OF WINE ON MYSELF AND THEN FELL INTO A CAKE'
Shout out to those two kissing girls at Frau Engel's, I hope they're doing okay
Johanna calling Felicity out on her 'I'm not like other girls' bullshit and informing her that she's still the same intelligent girl she knew, the fact that she likes dresses and bows now doesn't change that and why should she give a shit whether or not men take her seriously, she's living to make herself happy
Felicity immediately changing her views after this and realizing that girls are fucking awesome and by measuring them by how men percieve them she's just rebranding sexism
Honestly all the feminist takes in this book were so good
That minute where we thought they'd walked into a place filled with organs and severed limbs before it's revealed that they're just wax lmao
Just the Science Girl Gang in general
Johanna genuinely thinking Monty's ear grew back
The fact that the kiss between Sim and Felicity didn't lead to any drama when Felicity said she didn't still didn't really feel any kind of sexual/romantic attraction, Sim just accepted it and they were still friends who just kind of had platonic crushes on eachother
Felicity's asexuality in general was handled really well
THE BABY SEA DRAGON
I already knew Platt was an asshole but holy shit fuck him
'Swaggering into the room in a way that would have been ridiculous had he not been so good-looking' I'm sorry Mackenzi Lee was that a Great Comet reference
Johanna kicking Monty in the balls
Percy and Monty both hugging Felicity at once, they're all too pure
Literally none of the men were creepy when Felicity had to take off her petticoat to show them the embroidered map, they all looked away and my man Scipio didn't even want to touch the petticoat - honestly I shouldn't have to remark on this but it just shows how rare it is that a group of men actually respect women and their autonomy, and this is a group of pirates who've probably all killed people
The whole battle scene was just really well-written and really showed the reality of the situation
The sea dragon just fuckin SINKING the ship, hell yeah ms. sea dragon
The ending in general was so pure
I love that this book carried on with the theme of self love that's present in the first one - that whole repeated message of you deserve to be here, and how one of the most defiant things you can do in a world that wants to oppress you to is to be proud of who you are and allow yourself to do what makes you happy
Anyway feel free to add more because this whole book was so good! That was a very messy synopsis lol

Parental Rage Only Causes More Rage - Dragon Ball Super
Tumblr media
Recently, a fan wanted me to post his thoughts about Dragon Ball Super: Broly with regards to the emotional abuse that the character Broly goes through due to his father, Paragus, trying to control his power for the sake of vengeance. He felt that the father/son dynamic between the two characters was similar to his own life experiences dealing with a father that didn’t see their child as someone with agency.
I always felt that this version of Broly was done well and his development gave the movie some substance. It sucked that the manga version of Dragon Ball Super only summarized the movie events in a single panel. Here’s his post.
While watching Dragon Ball Super: Broly, I noticed that Paragus was too controlling of Broly. This reminded me greatly of how my own father used me as a tool for revenge against my mother in regards to the divorce they had and temporarily got me to hate her. He even hired someone to lie about my mother's physical pain problem to spurn my hatred even further.
I was too young to remember when it all started, but I heard my dad wasn't properly taking care of my brother and I. He was drinking and started to become arrogantly opinionated. The final line was crossed when he hit my mother. To this day, he almost always puts the blame on everyone else when relationships don't work out.
I also remembered how he tried to make me buy into his political obsession with conspiracies despite being in my 20's and old enough to believe what works for me. Paragus tried to decide what Broly should do for him, forgetting the importance of parenting and teaching children how to make the best of their situation on the planet they were stranded on, Vampa.
I feel that if (Akira) Toriyama chose Bruce Banner/Hulk as an inspiration for modern Broly, he picked it well as the trauma of parents being cruel to their children since "Mom/Dad knows best" and potentially causing them to lash out in rage has been an ongoing issue for years. I also noticed that although people say I'm really smart or imaginative, they would never mention the downsides. During the movie, Paragus only complimented Broly in regards to his power. When people only talk about your biggest strengths, they tend to forget that that's not all there is to a person.
When I was growing up, I remembered getting laughed at for not being stereotypically macho. Paragus forced a sexist expectation on Broly by having him focus so much on fighting. However, to keep a part of his sense of self alive, Broly wears a pelt made from a creature he befriended on Vampa as a child. His pelt challenges the misconception that men can't be sentimental or emotional. After all, in real-life, you do see men do things to remember time spent with a loved one, such as having a toast to them on their birthday, keeping a gift received from them before they passed away or even little things like naming a character after them.
Broly reminds us that remembering the good times with a friend can help you through tough times as his pelt may have been one of the few things that made the abuse he went through pay off in the end by befriending two of Frieza's soldiers who weren't inherently bad, Lemo and Cheelai, and the Saiyan warrior he was supposed to kill, Son Goku. Without positive memories, many people would be in horrible places and as King Vegeta put it when discussing Broly, "a danger to himself".
I feel these are very important details to the movie as it is very rare to see media in general call out the sexism that men face.
I see some people say that Broly might have Stockholm Syndrome as a result of being treated as a slave for so long by the only person he knew. I may not be a psychology expert, but if true, this is unexpectedly mature subject matter for the Dragon Ball franchise in my opinion. It is sad that some people completely snap when their own manipulative tormentor dies as Broly's transformation into a berserk Super Saiyan symbolizes the final straw of psychological abuse.
I can see Broly as an example of hope for all abused children that need a second family like Lemo and Cheelai who can save them. Remember, parents, you don't always know what's best for your child. You should never let your desire for revenge, regardless of how minor or understandable your reason is, affect your relationships with your child. They may not function well and wind up naive about things like healthy relationships, if not treated with as much respect as anyone else, regardless of age.

Below you will find the art previews for this year, remember authors that its not quite time for claiming yet!

1. Prompt: Tony was taken by Hydra not long after the New York invasion and experimented heavily on Tony. 3. Warnings: None that I can think of? Prompts: Definitely don’t have to stick to this, but this was just what was in my mind drawing this — They’re a Shoulder Angel and Shoulder Demon each trying to do a good job for their assigned Human - Natasha Romanov. I’d love it if maybe they’ve been working together over time to help Natasha (maybe to get out from under Red Room) without actually really seeing each other for a while until eventually they do. Not-Quite-Identity!Porn of some sort, with a bit of oh no he’s hot when they meet. Just imagine the hijinks with a little Nat and these boys as her conscience! Ha! Limitations: I know Tony is depicted as a Demon here, but this is Tony, please don’t make him out to be the actual Devil? He’s just doing his job but - oh no! - he gets attached to his Human and adversary and only wants the best for them, screw Hell’s policies CLAIMED

Megan Thee Stallion Hair is a symbol of pride for black women anime fans

Megan Thee Stallion Hair is a symbol of pride for black women anime fans
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The highly anticipated release of Megan Thee Stallion's debut album Fever (May 17) has doubled as a national holiday for your sultry and self-confident fanbase. Although hip-hop heavyweight Juicy J and newcomer DaBaby make appearances, the Houston-bred "hot girl" remains the center of the show. And that's how we like it.
Megan's rise was one of the books. In early 2017, she catapulted into fame after attending a hip-hop cipher at Texas A & M University. People all over the country quickly noticed their conscious, deep-drawn river and so their fans, called "hotties", were born. Fast forward to 2019, and you stallion has hosted your own Spotify event, found fans, Rihanna, Kehlani, and SZA, and continues to release hard-hitting freestyles and other repeatable bodies of work.
She is also the first rapping woman signed at 300 Entertainment, home of Young Thug and formerly Migos. But with each ascent comes a humming crew of haters. One of the first sightings of this sad collective, properly known as "hotties," came in March when she shared a photo of her half-white, half-radiant red hair.

– HOT GIRL MEG (@theestallion) April 22, 2019
The title was "TODOROKI TINA", a reference to the My Hero Academia character, Shoto Todoroki. Although a considerable number of people celebrated Megan's love for anime, there were those who questioned their affinity, men. For example, Twitter user @CourtneeHendrix user wrote, "No way Meghan the stallion watch anime. Your public relations team is firing. "
@TrippyTrxv also shared, "ngga yea i want to know what anime megan you stallion watches. Why? bc i love the shI and I like you. If she does not really see it, but dresses in anime halfway cosplay, I would be hurt. I would still do your music fw maybe tho. "Ultimately, these reactions ask the question: what would the stallion gain by showing people that he has fun?
The targeted criticism of naysayers is, to say the least, frustrating. After all, she's not the only woman who shares her love for anime (look at Southern rap goddesses Bbymutha and Purp Goddess), nor is she the first rapper, male or female, ever to do it. Emcees like Lupe Fiasco, Robb Bank $ and Migos' launch are also anime fans but have not been criticized to the same extent. If flagrant racist sexism is not the culprit, then what?
After the Global History of Anime, the first anime was probably released during World War I and created by Shimokawa Oten. The short, colorless rolls of film were either "disassembled", "disintegrated" or "destroyed", so little is known about the early days of this art form. Over the next few decades, anime developed into longer animations, with sound and color to boot. A report by Marwah Zagzoug states that during World War II, the Japanese government took control of the arts by threatening the artists who had also criticized the government. Those who disagreed with the new orders were forbidden to write and pushed to the margins of society. But those who stayed were supplied with artists' companies, militarized and charged with anti-propaganda propaganda.
After the war, anime finally returned to its original purpose: an outlet for joy and honest expression. One of the first visuals that had great success was the full-length feature Hakujaden (The Tale of the White Serpent), which also produced an American adaptation in 1961. Although Global History states that this was not the first crossover, it proved that anime could be a lucrative industry. Finally, television expanded its reach and consumption ballooned in the 1980s with the release of Dragon Ball, the third best selling manga ever. The introduction of Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon in the 1990s soon followed and until then, anime had become the monolithic Global Phenomenon that continues to generate revenue and inspire people of all ages. The Black community is a proud and important part of your loyal fanbase, and women have always been just as invested as men.
The "I liked it before it was mainstream" statement is still a pretty youthful, 2011 Tumblr-era vibe.
Although easy-to-find literature and the Internet have undoubtedly enhanced the profile of this art form, the statement "I liked it before it was mainstream" is still a rather youthful, 2011 Tumbler era sentiment. Unfortunately, there are people who continue to operate out of this logic and in the case of anime, the culprit party is mostly men. When it comes to Megan Thee stallion and her hairstyles specifically, you either wanted to prove to you that she is really interested in or just did not believe that she was even interested. How dare to invest in an attractive, popular, talented black woman in it?
It's another reminder that people continue to pursue the hobbies of black women, no matter what they are. So much so that the stallion himself addressed the controversy in an interview with XXL: "You must stop thinking that way. Poor B * tches may also like anime. "Luckily, a number of supporters, Black Women, have not been afraid to defend Megan and also speak their peace.
"It felt really good to me [weil die Leute] have this misunderstanding .. that black girls did not see anime like black guys when most of us had the same channels and caught the same Miguzi or Toonami block lol after school, "says Taylor, who pokers on @ sheisresting on Twitter , "We were definitely separated from the American anime wave back then. It was fulfilling to see a black female rapper with one such..mainstream potential not only acknowledge anime, but also call himself a fan, while loosely cosplaying your favorite characters. I had the feeling that there are also many black cosplayers who are constantly being told that you can not disguise themselves as Japanese characters because you have the wrong color. "
Taylor was not alone. In fact, over 100 responded when I asked a tweet for black women who were fans of anime and Megan thee stallion. User @dualityofman wrote: ".. I thought your hair would be cool! I'm from Texas and I live in Houston, so I have a lot to do with her. Their liking anime was just another thing we had in common … .I feel like many men hate to see women happy and enjoy things. It's as if you could not call you ugly because it's obviously NOT YOU. Can not say that she is untalented because she is just near everyone [Männer]comes out. She can not insult your intelligence because she is at school. So, let's SH * t like you for anime. I'm just looking for a reason to be mad at a black woman. "

Misogynoir is a term used by the black feminist Moya Bailey and is intended to emphasize the way black men interact negatively with black women. It is also part of the root problem Black men have with Megan Thee stallion music, looks, interests and behavior. What confuses you most is your conviction about it. You can not believe that you are interested in anime, and you hate it for it.
Also worthy of note is the close relationship of Japan to the Black community outlined by Cecilia D 'Anastasio for Vice. It has included the mistreatment of mixed-speed (Japanese and Black) people and in the context of anime, a tiny number of non-stereotypical depictions of Black people. Japan is also notorious for its ubiquitous use of Blackface, which made headlines last year. D 'Anastasio notes that regardless of all these racial crimes, blacks continue to cherish anime and honor him through cosplay and songs.
Rare moments that acknowledge the enduring power of Japanese animation and an underrated part of your fanbase should happen more often.
In 2016, writer Amber Dixon also talked about the hurtful separations she saw and experienced as a black anime fan. These include observing brown skin as a metaphor for dark energy in Sailor Moon, the minstrel – like face of Mr. Popo in Dragon Ball Z and Blackface, to cosplay black characters. Like D 'Anastasio, Dixon continues in the worship of Anime Fort and notices the early and emotional connection she felt specifically with Sailor Moon.
Twitter user @imninm adds, "I know more black girls who see anime more than any race or gender. Personally, I have anime look as I could remember, from Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Sailor Moon, Hamtaro, Dragonball Z. I never felt like it was showing a "boy" or anything like that. I just liked what I saw and I still do. "In other words, anime will always have a special place in the hearts of female viewers, including high-profile rappers like Megan Thee Stallion.

Make up @akilaface
A post shared by Hot Girl Meg (@theestallion) on Apr 22, 2019 at 5:57 pm PDT
In November 2018, and again this past April, she emphasized her devotion with a different hairstyle inspired by Bulma, a predominant character in Dragon Ball (the first is Goku). This time, instead of an overwhelming amount of criticism, Megan's cascading, Seafoam green locks initiated a tender co-sign from FUNimation, a dubbing and distribution company. "Love the style!" Wrote the company, with a cutesy gif attached by Bulma. Rare moments that acknowledge the enduring power of Japanese animation and an underrated part of your fanbase should happen more often.
Men should be proud that such a celebrity woman like the stallion shares a common ground with you, increases solidarity, and makes room for even more people to become fans. It could also force certain men to accept that women did not want to interact with you or go out because they were nerds, but because they were unbearable. Conscientiousness, happy black, female fans and good music? Thanks, Megan. Stream fever now.

Tumblr media
((Hello guys, I have some hot fuckin’ tea, and it’s about Yamcha. Come join the tea party and take a sip, babes.
Alright, so for context, there was conversation on @dragon-ball-meta [sorry if you think it’s weird to be tagged in a random rp blog’s post I will delete it from the post if you want me to-] about the potential of a pairing between Android Eighteen and Yamcha, the majority  agreeing that the pairing really didn’t make a lot of sense. No big deal, right?
Then comes one user, I will not name them because I don’t want to turn this into a witch hunt, who basically argued “IT DOESN’T WORK BECAUSE YAMCHA IS SEXIST TRASH”
And it. Really annoyed me, you know? Especially since there seems to be this trend of shitting on Yamcha for dumb or made up reasons.
And if you know me, you know that I can’t stand people shitting on him and Krillin.
Now, Dragon Ball Meta has done a good job in rebutting against their arguments, but I wish to make a response of my own, since this character assassination has been going on for years, and I think it’s time to stop.
Fuck your memes, the only valid Yamcha meme anymore is Yamcha juggling turtle shells.
Now before I start, I’d like to preface a few things.
First, no, I do not ship Eighteen and Yamcha. Not only because of the context that Dragon Ball Meta has pointed out, but because their general characters would really make the ship make no sense. Yamcha’s fear of girls would really not mesh well with Eighteen’s ‘spit it out’ kinda attitude. Not to mention, as much as I like Bulcha, Bulma is proof that bossy women just aren’t the best match for Yamcha. He’s too passive to make the relationship work. Yamcha is so afraid of getting dumped that he just nervously accepts that she’s right, and sometimes your partner needs to be told that they’re wrong. And while Eighteen is quieter, she’s kinda bossy too. So no, I don’t see this ship working, with or without Krillin.
Second, just so there’s no mistake, no, this is not me arguing against Dragon Ball Meta. I might elaborate, or even correct him on a few things on the subject, but in general, I agree with his assessment of Yamcha’s character. This is a response to one of the users that reblogged his post. Please do not think for a second I’m trying to start beef or anything.
Also, the person will not be name dropped because one, again, no witch hunt, and two, this is unfortunately an opinion of Yamcha that the majority of the fanbase seems to hold. So I will be arguing them all to fuck.
And if you find out who it is by going to DBM’s blog, do not, I repeat, do not harass them. If you do, I will block you. No exceptions! I don’t care if you’re following me, I don’t care if you like my writing and my characterization, I don’t even care if we’re mutuals. If you harass someone over works of fiction, you’re fucking dead to me.
Third, I know that being a Yamcha roleplayer might make me biased, but believe me, in order to write for this character, I had to do a fuck ton of research, especially since I’m actually relatively new to the series [I fuckin started binge watching it last year from Dragon Ball to Dragon Ball Super, still debating on watching GT], reading up on anything that I missed so that I can stay as true to his character as possible.
That being said, the research I’ve done on this series and this character is why I think the notion of Yamcha being sexist, a cheater, etc. is erroneous.
Now, Let’s begin.
You really don’t bring up a lot of points, your main ones being one, he sees girls as objects and not people, and two, he cheated on Bulma [ah that classic misconception among fans], So I will shoot them down one at a time.
One; You claim that Yamcha is sexist, that he sees girls as objects and things to be exploited.
... When?
No, I mean it, give me one fucking example. You made the claim, the burden of proof is on you, as the one making the argument. I’ll even provide links that let you view the mangas and animes for free so you can point me to one manga panel, one episode with the time that it happens. Give me one example, and I might, might, take that claim seriously.
You also say that he feels justified in his fear and distrust of women, so he’s sexist.
Uhm....? No??? You’re right that he’s afraid of women, but distrustful??? The fuck did that come from?
Oh, but you might zone in on the fear and be like, “That’s proof enough that he’s sexist!”
Uuuuuhhhhh no.
See, fear can mean different things depending on what it’s bred by. With things such as homophobia, transphobia, and, yes, sexism, those are fears bred by hate.
In Yamcha’s case, it’s clear that that’s not his case of fear. Not only does he express his want to get over his fear so he can talk to a girl without freezing up or being a blabbering mess, hence his motivation for trying to steal the Dragon Balls from Goku and the others, but the other characters’ outright point out that he’s shy. On numerous occasions. Usually by Bulma, but still.
Not to mention that usually his reactions to being around a girl or being flirted with by one, it’s usually very anxious, leaving me to believe that he’s got some sort of social anxiety going on.
If you need proof, look no further than episode six of Dragon Ball “Keep an Eye on the Dragon Balls”, where it shows various instances of Yamcha going into panic attacks over Bulma, even going into an outright catatonic state when he realizes he accidentally grabbed Bulma’s boob. [which also discredits the notion of Yamcha seeing girls like objects, as he’s constantly horrified of seeing and touching a naked girl. If he saw girls as objects, he would have been creeping on her all to hell.]
The only reason he got over his fear with Bulma is because her safety was in jeopardy, and he had to put his fear aside to protect her. Once again, this discredits the idea of him seeing women as beneath him, as well as your other point, which I will get to in a while.
“But why is he only like that with girls?” you might ask. Well, not only is there several real life examples of boys being too shy around girls and feeling more at home with talking to boys, Yamcha has expressed wanting to get married one day. And as someone with social anxiety myself, I do find it very hard to approach people IRL because I’m afraid of being judged, if it makes sense. So it’s very easy to argue that the same could apply to Yamcha, just with girls his age.
Two; Your argument is that he cheated on Bulma and that in general, any ship with him would be abusive.
Uhm??? The only source for the cheating issue was Trunks, who got it from his mother... Who’s known to misunderstand situations Yamcha finds himself in as him cheating. Who’s known to get jealous if a girl shows interest in him, not him showing interest in the girl, but the girl showing interest in him.
Not to mention, does this look like someone that’s willing to cheat?
Tumblr media
Because to me this looks more like someone that takes his relationship with Bulma seriously and wants to take it further. And remember, the only prompting was Goku telling Bulma to “take care of the baby” with no context.
Oh, also here’s the link to the manga page so you know I’m not bullshitting.
Oh, what’s that? You’re going to bring up the episode in Dragon Ball Z where it shows him as a baseball player? Where not only were they broken up at the time when he asked someone to go on a date with him and was talking with another girl, but the entire episode was also filler? Once again, think back to his shyness. Even Toriyama confirmed that it’s always going to be there.
“Oh but then you’ll have to say all the fun stuff like Chichi making Goku learn to drive and Yamcha, Tien, and Chiaotzu kicking the Ginyu Force’s ass.” you may say.
I mean. Yeah. It’s not canon. But unless it’s deconfirmed by Toriyama himself or doesn’t contradict established characterization, then we can still imagine that they happened. Most of the filler are things happening during timeskips anyways, or just don’t happen during the main story, so it’s really up to the imagination what all happened, and Toei did just that.
You also claim that Yamcha behaves like a fuckboi, to which I have to say bitch where?
Yeah, he was a bit annoyed that Bulma had Vegeta’s child, but that was never, I repeat, never directed at Bulma, or Trunks for that matter. In fact, by the looks of it, he was helping Bulma take care of him. It’s quite clearly directed at Vegeta.
Why?
Simply put, Yamcha’s ultimate goal was to settle down and start a family. And not only does Vegeta do that, with his ex no less, but he also just... Completely ignores them.
Can you imagine how infuriating that is, not even flaunting something they have that you don’t, but completely ignoring it like it’s nothing.
Vegeta had started this family, the family that could have been Yamcha’s, and he wasn’t even willing to take responsibility for it.
Now I’m not trying to imply that Yamcha was owed anything or that Bulma owed anyone anything. Hell, I don’t think Yamcha thought that either. I’m just trying to illustrate his mindset.
And you know what? After the Cell Games Saga, he stopped being cross with Vegeta. He’s still friendly with Bulma and Trunks, and he’s even friendly with Vegeta. Hell, when Bulla was born, he was excited to meet her.
Pretty sure if he were a fuckboy, he’d be trying to win Bulma back.
But no, he’s content with being friends with Bulma and her family. Because, at least I think, he cares about what she wants and what makes her happy. I think so long as she’s happy with what she has, then he’s happy too.
Does that sound like a fuckboy to you?
“Well then why did they break up? Are you saying Bulma did something wrong?”
No.
Just like in real life, sometimes break ups don’t happen because one slighted the other.
Sometimes things just don’t work out.
Think about it, throughout the series, up until the Android Arc, their relationship has been on and off, usually Bulma accusing him of cheating. And like I pointed out earlier in the post, Yamcha is just too passive to make the relationship work. If he were more assertive and willing to stand his ground and assure her that no, he’s not cheating, then maybe it would have had a better chance of working.
I think at this point, the healthiest thing for them was that they stopped being in this relationship. For good.
And if their break up was really the result of one of them wronging each other, they would not still be friends.
So, can we end this character assassination? It’s been going on for yeas, and it needs to stop. Same with Krillin’s character assassination.
The memes may have been funny once upon a time, but they’re getting old now. And people are starting to view them as canon.
And that’s it for my tea. If you have something you wish to add or to correct me on, please be sure to share your thoughts. I’d love to know. ^^
Sorry that this is so long and probably all over the place holy fuck-))

How DC Superhero Girls gets the “Battle of the Sexes” right
One of the oldest storytelling tropes in children’s entertainment is the “Battle of the Sexes”. Throughout the eighties and nineties (And for a good bit in the early 2000s) every kids show had at least one episode where the male and female characters split up into gendered teams and compete over something. While these episodes can be fun, they almost always have the same moral: “Girls are just as good as boys”. And yes, it is almost always the boys learning this lesson, and it’s always felt weird and unnecessary.
Battle of the Sexes episodes have dropped off considerably in the last few years, all for the best in my opinion, and the few times it does pop up, it’s usually handled much better than it had been in the past. DC Superhero Girls recently did a similar episode and I just had to talk about it.
I’ve sung the praises of this cartoon for a while and openly claimed that the Cartoon Network series is vastly superior to the Webseries. However, one thing I’ve been worried about for a while is the way the show handles the male heroes. For a while it’s felt like the show was portraying the boys like morons, assholes or both. Superman for example is a showboating asshat who condescends to Supergirl constantly. But the worst is Robin, who seems to have the worst traits of Damian Wayne and Jason Todd fused into this incarnation of Dick Grayson.
Fortunately, neither are in the episode, Superhero Boys. The episode introduces a male centric teen superhero team featuring the Flash, Hal Green Lantern, Hawkman, Green Arrow, Aqualad, and Steve Trevor; calling themselves the Invinci-Bros (Yep, these are teenage boys alright) Every one of these characters (With the exception of Hawkman, unless I missed something) has been featured in a previous episode or one of the online shorts to pre-establish this version of the character’s personality. And most of them are wide divergences from previous incarnations.
Had this show come out when I was a kid, the entire conflict between the Superhero Girls and Boys would have been centered around the fact that the Girls are...well, girls. And the Boy’s would be assholes to them for basically no reason beyond that. And there is conflict between the groups, but almost all of it is just the usual benal competition that grows between two groups trying to do the same thing, and more personal rivalries between the individual members of the groups.
Every member of the two groups know each other to some extent and each character is paired off based on whatever relationship they have out of their costumes. Hal and Jess are both Green Lanterns, and previous episodes have detailed why the two are often at odds. Green Arrow is a hammy drama kid and sees Zatanna as a theatrical rival, even if Zatanna herself doesn’t remember who he is until Oliver starts acting like an over dramatic bitch. Hawkman is a quite stone faced loner, but he doesn’t have anything against Bumblebee. She’s just scared of him.
But this is what I’m saying. The conflict between the groups is purely based on how the characters feel about each other as people, rather than the usual “Ew, boys! Ew, girls!” bullshit. And it not even like all the characters take issue with each other.
Batgirl and Flash get along great. They’re both hyper-active balls of energy and joy, chattering about whatever is currently exciting them. Wonder Woman and Steve clearly don’t have any issues with each other, other than Diana not being able to function properly around Steve because of her crush on him. And Supergirl and Aqualad...are pretty much indifferent to each other.
Like I said earlier, most other Battle of the Sexes episodes end with the main characters (Usually the boys) learning to not treat the other gender like shit for no reason. Here, there’s no real lesson to be learned. There is an ego problem at the beginning of the episode when the boys refuse to let Wonder Woman, clearly the best suited among them to lead, to take charge. Although, it is obvious that part of the reason for their refusal to put Diana in charge is casual sexism. I honestly can’t think of to many teenage boys who would be completely fine with a girl telling them what to do. Trust me, I was a teenage boy once.
They eventually do come to realize their best chance at victory is to let Wonder Woman take the lead. Hal sends Steve off on a pointless errand so she’d stop acting like a lovestruck moron and can come up with a plan to keep Zod from killing them all. They do end up giving credit for the win to Steve, but that reads more like brotherhood solidarity rather than refusing to give a girl credit for anything. Boys are stupid like that.
While I was initially wary of how the male heroes would be portrayed, it all balances out by the main female heroes kind of being assholes to. It’s just the comedy of the series. And best of all, the heroes of both groups are useful and have a hand in the day’s victory. Well, except Steve Trevor, but that kinda the joke. Even Aqualad, who is shown to be largely useless throughout the episode, is the one who ultimately puts down Zod by using a fire hydrant Supergirl broke to make a massive water dragon.
Battle of the Sexes episodes are dying, and frankly, I felt that for the best. Steve Trevor from the first animated Wonder Woman movies said it best, “The last thing we need is less communication between the sexes.” Cartoons with episodes like that only foster more pointless barriers between boys and girls, and sadly some kids do buy into it. However DC Superhero Girls, of all things, continue to showcase surprising levels of competent writing and character development by making this episode as balanced as possible while still keeping the focus on the main six heroes.

The Blame Game (of Thrones)
I see some people being mad at the characters (especially D.a.ny and J.ai.me) for doing stupid and/or awful things, but I can’t look at it that way.  That would mean admitting that the people I saw on my screen tonight are the same characters I’ve watched for seven seasons.  That would mean admitting that anything about their actions made sense, and flowed naturally from the character development that had come before.
No.  Don’t be mad at the characters.
And don’t be mad at the actors for fulfilling the terms of their contracts.
Be mad at the writers, directors and producers who brought this story to our screens (hereafter referred to as “the writers” for brevity’s sake).
Be mad at the writers who dropped the ball so spectacularly when it mattered most.
Be mad at the writers who got so enamored with the idea of “shocking” the audience that they threw everything else out the window.
Be mad at the writers who thought a destructive, unhealthy, incestuous relationship was better than a relationship based on healing and mutual respect.
Be mad at the writers who couldn’t write a woman in a strong leadership position without making her evil and/or “crazy.”
Be mad at the writers who made one tone deaf decision after another despite all the feedback and criticism they got about the sexism and racism in the show.
Be mad at the writers who thought going out of their way to bend canon in order to have a character be sexually assaulted was the best way to make her “stronger.”
Be mad at the writers who didn’t realize how rapey a scene came across until it got widespread criticism, then had the gall to suggest it “became consensual” by the end.
Be mad at the writers who took one of the kindest, most insightful and thoughtful characters in the books and decided she would enjoy watching her abuser be eaten alive by dogs.
Be mad at the writers who thought that yelling at someone to just get over their PTSD was a useful technique.  I mean, so what if you were tortured and brainwashed and had your genitals cut off?  Suck it up, buttercup.
Be mad at the writers who reduced a three-dimensional character from the books into a one-note gay joke on the show, only to humiliate, imprison, and kill him.
Be mad at the writers who started out with one of the best fantasy sagas of our time and got so enamored with grimdark edginess, CGI, pointless nudity and shocking the audience that they ultimately lost sight of the point of the books:  war is terrible and leaves deep scars in so many ways; the powerful get that way by taking advantage of others; and the world can suck--but that’s all the more reason to fight to make it a better place.  Honor, optimism, knowledge, love, family, kindness, and empathy are incredibly important, and are worth clinging to--especially when times are the darkest.  We all have the capability for good and evil inside us, and choosing to stubbornly uphold our ideals in the face of adversity is truly heroic.
I have had strongly mixed feelings about this show for at least the past three seasons, but after 8.5 about the only positive that’s left for me is that it looks awesome.  The sets, the costumes, the props, the settings, the dragons...all a delight to look at.  But the messages it sends, the stories it tells, the character arcs it ruins so spectacularly?  Nope.  Past the point of no return.
Consistency?  Logic?  Plot?  Character arcs?  Satisfying payoffs for years of development?  What are those?

Nice harmonic convergence there
Ranma
Favorite character:  Constant jostle between Akane, Sasuke, Kuno, and Gosunkugi
Most relatable character:  Sasuke Sasuke Sasuke, in the worst ways (awkward, lonely, stressed, bad choices, goofy-looking...)
Most underrated character:  S-Sasuke...
Most overrated character:  Pantyhose Taro?  At least, I assume people think he’s cool, I just really, truly, genuinely don’t
Least favorite character:  Happosai...this isn’t even a question
Favorite pairing:  Ranma/Akane, they’re so cute and awkward
Least favorite pairing:  In terms of stuff people actually ship, Shampoo/Mousse (Mousse needs to learn that “no” means “no” and to not take his frustration out on other people, and Shampoo needs to learn empathy, kindness and how to respect boundaries)
Favorite part/moment:  The entirety of the Cursed Tunnel OVA, it’s my favorite thing in the whole franchise.  All the character interactions are great, the manga story was already great, and all the additions in the anime took it to the next level (and there’s no “fanservice”/sexism! amazing!!)
Least favorite part/moment:  That stretch of time when basically every other episode was a Happosai episode
What about it got my attention:  A lot of my friends have been into it over the years, I’d been seeing ads for it in the back of other manga since I was a kid, I even read the first ~5 volumes in a comic store in middle school, but what got me to finally try it last year was a tweet I saw with a clip from ep 2 of Akane beating up all the boys in the schoolyard.  After spending my whole childhood on 90s anime where only boys get to throw punches while the girls hang back and worry, I was so excited to see a 90s anime where a girl actually got to fight (at that point I didn’t remember the manga and had kinda assumed that Ranma was the only one who fought)
What about it kept my attention:  Momentum, kind of?  I liked it okay, but I wasn’t crazy about it at first, but I also had enough free time to watch ~5 episodes a day (which is a lot for me), so I spent enough time on it to get attached to the characters (...and to eventually meet Sasuke...I’d like to apologize to everyone I’ve annoyed by hyperfixating on his strange, funny existence...but I won’t)
Overall opinion:  Lots of fun, addictive, I’ll probably reread the manga a lot and rewatch a lot of episodes but I may never do a proper every-ep-in-order rewatch because now I know which ones have Happosai
Dragon Ball (gonna assume this means the entire franchise)
Favorite character:  Between Videl, Oolong, and King Kai
Most relatable character:  King Kai just wants to be left alone and for life to go smoothly and for people to laugh at his jokes.  Instead he’s obsessively anxious and constantly worrying about whether or not the world’s gonna end
Most underrated character:  Everyone in-universe (and I’m sure lots of fans) dumps on Oolong, but mostly he’s just trying to survive??  Like he got dragged into this weird big adventure family and they yell at him for suggesting they do something practical like use their dragon ball wish to kill Vegeta and Nappa because “he doesn’t believe Goku can beat them” (excuse you, Bulma, that was a useful suggestion)
Most overrated character:  Broly, but like, it’s still hilarious that his dramatic backstory is “as a baby, his crib was next to Goku’s, and Goku’s crying gave him PTSD”
Least favorite character:  Master Roshi...the narrative may forgive him, but I never will...
Favorite pairing:  Shu/Mai/Emperor Pilaf where Shu and Mai have been trying to date each other for years but Emperor Pilaf keeps barging in and demanding to be included
Least favorite pairing:  it used to be Vegeta/Bulma but they (and he) are so good in Super...so...Mai/Trunks where the age difference isn’t addressed.  I’d be more or less cool with it if they’d just talk about how weird it is for Old Lady In A Child Body Mai to have feelings for Actual Child Trunks, or for Trunks to realize Mai is an old lady and talk about how weird it is for him to have feelings for an old lady in a child body...but they just...they won’t???  They gave me a tease of it by having Old Lady In A Child Body Mai crush on Younger Than Her But Still An Adult Future Trunks, but that’s all...
Favorite part/moment:  Videl learning to fly...I wanted to BE her so badly as a kid...
Least favorite part/moment:  All the gross sexist "fanservice” with Bulma in the first Dragon Ball arc, that scarred me as a kid and still upsets me as an adult.  It’s not even sexy, it’s just MEAN
What about it got my attention:  As kids we weren’t allowed to watch Dragon Ball Z, then I found out my little brother was watching it, then of course I had to watch it too
What about it kept my attention:  There was something addicting about Dragon Ball Z, the way each episode was so slow and led right into the next (and they often aired back-to-back), but I loved the Dragon Ball comics more because they were more laid-back and goofy.  I reread the first Budokai arc and the Muscle Tower mini-arc over and over
Overall opinion:  I love it to bits despite all the stuff I passionately hate...it’s ride or die, I’m here for life
