Fourtheenth Day of Gift-Giving: Fun Adventures
Prompt: A group project in school brings some unusual friends together
Yes, it's a high school AU, somewhat inspired by / based off this fic idea I had a while ago! I've never written a high scool AU before so pls be nice, also I've taken some liberties with the prompt again, because there's no group project per se, they're simply in the same chemistry class 😌
Banner made by @kraeuterhexchen again, thanks for suffering for me a bit I love youuuu <3

Aleksi muffled his third yawn in a row on his palms. Every single week at this exact time he regretted his promise to his father that he’d take at least four optional courses this school year on top of all the compulsory ones in exchange for a language course in Amsterdam next June. The tragedy was that his schedule was already so full with the compulsory courses alone that he could barely find gaps to fill with anything else at more humane times than at eight o’clock on a Monday morning, which was when his additional chemistry class was held. It didn’t help that none of his friends or acquaintances were taking the same class; Aleksi envied them for their superior life choices.
Chemistry could be alright at best, but in general it wasn’t among his favourite subjects. Rather than reaction equations, Aleksi was much more fascinated by the only other guy in the group he knew by name, who, by the happy coincidence of the two of them both being late to class on the first day, ended up being his lab partner. He didn’t know Olli because they were buddies, quite the contrary, in fact; one of Olli’s friends was still bitter about Aleksi standing him up regarding a music project (which had been but a case of bad communication, of which Aleksi was deeply ashamed, even though in the eyes of his own friends it had been ‘such a big-dick move to put that cocky emo loser back in his place lol’), so Aleksi wasn’t exactly surprised that Olli never replied to his sleepy greeting on Monday mornings. Thinking back to it, Aleksi couldn’t recall the boy saying anything at all during the chemistry classes, so that by now he would’ve started suspecting Olli was mute, if it wasn’t for the times he had seen Olli laugh and joke about with his friends at recess. From the little Aleksi had heard when he had passed by the group in the school corridors, Olli had a soft, quiet voice, often blending under the much louder ones of his friends, which was why Aleksi had set making Olli speak to him as his main ambition for the course, rather than getting a high mark.
“Morning,” he said to Olli like he did every Monday, and like every Monday, Olli barely glanced his way. What made this Monday different from all the other Mondays was that Aleksi could’ve sworn he had seen Olli nod at him this time, sort of in a blink-and-you-miss-it kind of way, although it may as well have been just his tired brain making things up. Nevertheless, it gave Aleksi the spark of hope that had him sit up straight, ready to converse Olli’s ears off in case he finally happened to be in the mood, but before he could open his mouth to ask Olli about his weekend, the teacher started the lesson by shoving hand-outs on their tables.
That day, however, Aleksi was determined to succeed in his plan at long last, even if he had to get a little creative.
While Olli was concentrating on keeping his eyes open as the teacher explained the theory behind the day’s experiments, Aleksi picked up his pencil and wrote on the corner of Olli’s hand-out:
Hi! :)
The anticipation nearly had him tremble as he waited for Olli to react in any way; for the longest time, bordering Aleksi’s patience, Olli did nothing but stare at the letters Aleksi had scribbled. He still didn’t look at him, still didn’t say anything or – god forbid – smile; he just blinked at the single word that had appeared in the corner of his paper.
Then, after a million years in Aleksi’s experience, he grabbed his own pencil.
hi
Those two letters alone made Aleksi feel like a winner already.
How are you?
Still keeping his eyes firmly on the paper, Olli seemed to be pondering his answer for a while.
good
Aleksi wondered if Olli was as terse speaking up as he was in writing.
Great to hear! I’m doing good as well :) Do you have a long day on Mondays?
Exactly like a moment earlier, Olli did nothing but stare at their brief written conversation. Aleksi wanted to believe that Olli was just about to write his answer but was ruthlessly interrupted by the teacher ordering them to walk over and look closer as she’d perform an example experiment for them to later mimic.
They didn’t get a chance to continue their little chat later on in the lesson, and they never spoke during the practical experiments they were asked to do – or rather, Olli never spoke, despite Aleksi’s best efforts to at least have him answer some simple yes-or-no questions, such as ‘do you want to try first?’ or ‘can you pass the pipette?’ or ‘oh fuck, do you think we should tell the teacher?’ when their experiments sometimes failed unexpectedly. The best Aleksi had gotten out of Olli was a suppressed snort when the other day Aleksi had accidentally spilled some red colour additive on his brand-new Off-White t-shirt.
“Quit laughing, or I’ll tell everyone it’s your blood,” he had said in hopes of making Olli properly giggle, but it had seemed to have the opposite effect, for Olli hadn’t let out a single sound for the rest of class after that. Later, Aleksi had wondered if it had been because Olli was scared Aleksi actually might, and to prevent his friends from getting wind of them being lab partners – because clearly he was that opposed to the idea of being associated with Aleksi – he had firmly kept his lips sealed for the rest of the class and all the ones that followed it.
This day, someone must have put something in Olli’s breakfast porridge, however, because when the class was dismissed, Olli spoke in his low, quiet voice, not even directly at Aleksi, but more to his general direction, so that Aleksi knew the words were addressed to him.
“See ya.”
“Yeah, see ya!” Aleksi replied, perhaps a little too eagerly, rolling his eyes in frustration when Olli hurried out of the classroom.
It wasn’t much, but it was a start.
~*~
The next Monday, Aleksi decided to go past formalities and straight to the point to get Olli to interact with him.
Had a nice wknd? :)
Aleksi was most definitely too optimistic for his own good, but he had a feeling Olli didn’t take half as long to answer this time, even though his reply remained brief.
yup
Literally on the edge of his seat, Aleksi waited for Olli to elaborate on his reportedly ‘nice weekend’ – in vain. He rolled his eyes and picked up his pencil again.
What did you get up to?
Olli flipped pencil in his fingers like one would do with a drumstic, clumsily, almost dropping it on his desk. Aleksi saw an attractive blush slowly spread on Olli’s cheeks and hoped it wouldn’t discourage Olli away from the budding conversation.
At last, Aleksi’s patient waiting was rewarded.
went to see a gig
Aleksi clenched his pencil into his fist out of sheer excitement. If there was a topic Aleksi could’ve chatted about for hours on end, it was music, his first and (so far) only love. He knew Olli played in a band and was sure that if he only could somehow make Olli lower his walls for him, they might actually find a lot to whisper about to pass the time a bit more merrily on Monday mornings.
So cool! Who did you see?
Olli didn’t keep him waiting for long, which Aleksi decided to take as a sign of Olli also being keen on their current conversation topic.
If only Aleksi knew how to help Olli get out of his shell a little more.
a friend’s band
Aleksi nodded, careful not to appear too enthusiastic or intrusive to scare Olli off, now that he had gotten him to write more than one word at a time.
Any good?
The teacher was just about to have the class gathered around her table again, so instead of a thorough review of the music show, Olli only jotted down a wonky yup in response before hurrying to the front of the classroom. During the whole rest of the class, Aleksi was not given another chance to fish more out of Olli’s weekend.
Well, he sighed to himself, standing up to join his coursemates, another Monday, then.
~*~
Later that day, sort of by coincidence (of having purposefully lingered around the music classroom on the pretext of asking the music teacher about an upcoming extra credit class), Aleksi learnt Olli’s band had a practice slot in the music classroom on Monday evenings. His plan was not to spy on Olli, but he figured he might as well use this newly-acquired information to squeeze a little more out of Olli in their next chemistry class.
Any plans after school?
Only when he noticed Olli freeze upon seeing the question on the margin of his notebook, Aleksi realised how it must sound like to him, so out of the blue.
Just curious btw :)
Olli seemed to hesitate before answering.
band practice
Aleksi hid his smirk behind his palm.
Hook, line and sinker, he thought to himself, the pencil in his hand itching to write down all the follow-up questions he had prepared. By the end of the class, Aleksi congratulated himself, for his plan to have Olli blabber about their common interest had worked out splendidly: Aleksi had learnt, for example, that Olli had been playing the bass for seven years already and that their band was actually working on their first EP, which Aleksi was genuinely impressed by. What really had made Aleksi feel like he was on top of the world, however, was when he noticed the smallest hint of amusement on Olli’s face; he still hadn’t managed to lure Olli to look him in the eye, but he had made him smile, which was perhaps even better.
The rest of the week Aleksi spent barely paying attention to what his friends were talking or laughing about in between classes, too busy searching for his chemistry class conversation buddy with his eyes. He did so every day, even though he was convinced the principal granting him the rest of the semester off with no consequences was more likely than catching Olli looking at him.
That was, until he did.
It was only a fleeting moment in time as they passed each other in the canteen and over before Aleksi’s heart could settle back to its place from his throat where it had jumped up to. He couldn’t tell since when his lab partner looking his way had started rousing this kind of reaction in him; then again, Olli had never really glanced his way before, so how could he have known?
Maybe that was also why Aleksi hadn’t noticed the shade of Olli’s irises until now. They were dark grey, he could tell, serious but not cold by any means. He couldn’t wait to take a closer look at them the next time he was given the chance.
Perhaps it was time for Aleksi to change his tactics.
~*~
“Hi Olli,” Aleksi said as soon as Olli walked up to his desk the next Monday. As if surprised to hear his name spoken out loud, Olli looked up at him, and Aleksi was granted another glimpse of those mysterious eyes.
Olli didn’t let him rejoice for too long, though, before turning his gaze to his desk as he sat down.
“Hi.”
And that was it: their first spoken conversation (in which Olli had also participated), despite Olli avoiding his gaze for the rest of the class, as was his right. Aleksi supposed. Even Aleksi himself was too giddy about the interaction to think of anything else to say.
It was almost ridiculous, if he was honest with himself. Yet, for the first time during the whole autumn semester, Aleksi was looking forward to the early Monday morning chemistry class.
~*~
Within the next couple of weeks, their conversations evolved from exchanging casual greetings (‘Hi Olli!’ ‘Hi…Aleksi’) to deep discussions about the current events in their lives (‘How’s it going?’ ‘Good.’ ‘Awesome’), which was equal parts exciting and frustrating to Aleksi. His heart would do the silly bouncing-up-to-his-throat thing whenever Olli blessed him with a quick glance of his dark eyes (Aleksi could swear they were a different shade every time he looked), but the moments only ever lasted for a second or two at a time. On the bright side, Olli would no longer rush out of the classroom to get out of having to perform any more small talk, but instead took his time putting his books and pencils back in his bag carefully, even if Aleksi never managed to open his mouth in time before Olli would make his inevitable escape. Aleksi suspected that it was, indeed, the newfound thrill of being graced with the occasional, fleeting look from Olli that rendered him speechless and caused him to miss his chance of getting to talk with Olli at least until they’d reach the classroom doorway. From there onwards they’d go their separate ways anyway, to their different worlds: Aleksi to one in which Olli was a moody emo kid with no sense of humour (or so Aleksi had been told by Isac who went to the same biology class with Olli), and Olli to one in which Aleksi was probably portrayed as a self-satisfied snob who once did his friend dirty.
The Monday after that, Olli never walked in through the classroom door, no matter how intensely Aleksi stared at it. When the days passed and Aleksi hadn’t caught a glimpse of the boy by Friday, he became worried, to the extent he considered walking up to Olli’s friend group to ask about him. He was almost certain that the one with the short platinum-blond hair might have actually told him, or at least he looked the least intimidating out of them all. One of them was almost two heads taller than Aleksi, so he saw it best to stay out of his way, although his smile – in those rare occasions he did smile – was anything but frightening. The one with the baggy clothes Aleksi had once heard rapping at a house party was tiny in comparison, but something about the angle of his eyebrows gave Aleksi the chills. Joel was obviously out of the question; Aleksi would probably never dare speak to him after The Incident. Joonas, on the other hand (Aleksi knew his name because he and Joel often squabbled loudly, with Joel shouting his name in bewilderment, his obvious affection for the boy poorly masked as annoyance), seemed like the kind of guy who would whisper you the right answer just in time before the teacher’s drill of a stare would bore a hole through your skull.
Taking a deep breath to brace himself, he watched as Olli’s friends were stepping in the Swedish classroom. As if on cue, Joonas was the last one about to walk through the door, and seeing his chance had come, Aleksi zoomed over and grabbed him by his sleeve.
“Hey,” he said once he had pulled Joonas aside, hidden from the disapproving looks of Joel and company.
“Huh?”
“Do you happen to know where Olli is?” Going straight to the point seemed like the best strategy to get anything out of Joonas, in case Aleksi had completely misjudged him and he was about to be punched in the face.
“He’s caught the cold. Why?” Knitting his brows and eyeing Aleksi up and down, Joonas seemed sceptical about Aleksi’s intentions, to say the least.
(It had Aleksi wondering if any of his own friends would act as protectively about him, but that was a matter of concern for another day entirely.)
“Ummmm… I have his chemistry homework for him.”
Aleksi could almost hear the cogwheels turning inside Joonas’ head until his expression brightened.
“Aaah… Right! Yeah, I suppose you would.” (Whatever Joonas meant by that.) “I’m gonna go over later today to see how he’s doing, so I can forward the message for you.”
“Oh, great! Thanks!” Aleksi said, as if he had any clue what they had actually been given as homework four days ago.
Ironically, Aleksi was saved by Joel calling for Joonas from inside the classroom.
“I’ll catch up with you later, alright?” Joonas winked at him, and then he was gone.
Joonas never did catch up with him, however, and so Aleksi was saved from the embarrassment of admitting he hadn’t been following their chemistry lesson after all, more or less due to the disappointment of not seeing Olli after having spent the entire weekend planning what he’d say to him. Not knowing if Olli would be attending the upcoming Monday’s class either, the weekend went by slower than ever, which normal-Aleksi would’ve embraced; this new, strange, maybe-crushing-on-his-quiet-lab-partner-Aleksi was on pins and needles.
~*~
There it was again, that awful skip of his heart, when Aleksi saw Olli enter the classroom on Monday. So relieved he was that he had no means to tone down the excitement in his greeting.
“You’re here!”
Olli looked up at him but said nothing, his silence a pang to Aleksi’s chest. His joy upon their reunion changed into defeat in less than a second, and Aleksi felt like a right idiot for having thought Olli, too, might have been waiting to see him again.
Suddenly fascinated by the cover of his chemistry course book, Aleksi put his head down to hide his disappointment. He was already settled for staring at the abstract drawing for the next 75 minutes to avoid more heartbreak, but then a slip of paper appeared in front of him.
can’t speak doctor’s orders
On his face, Olli was wearing a kind, small smile. In that instant, Aleksi forgot what he had even been so saddened about. He flashed Olli a smile in return and started searching with his eyes for a pencil; he would’ve felt too weird talking to Olli out loud without him being able to answer. Tragically, it seemed that in anticipation of possibly seeing Olli again after so long, Aleksi had forgotten to pack his pencil case. Noticing this, Olli offered him his own, the same, tiny smile still on his lips.
Shame! You’re usually so talkative
He knew he was taking a risk poking fun at Olli’s quietness, but to his great relief, Olli’s smile widened and his shoulders twitched in a voiceless chuckle. Encouraged by this, Aleksi continued with an equally risky revelation.
I missed you in class last week
Having written down the words, Aleksi could barely look at Olli as he felt his cheeks heaten up. He let Olli take back his pencil from his fingers, as well as the paper slip from his desk.
Olli spent almost a minute writing down his reply, erasing and rewriting, until he finally passed the paper back to Aleksi, immediately directing his face to the opposite side of the classroom.
missed you too
Aleksi had never seen three words so pretty in his life.
~*~
What followed next was an entire week of unexpected encounters between the two lab partners, as if the universe was purposefully making them cross each other’s way to make up for the past seven days of not seeing each other. On Tuesday, their shoulders brushed walking past each other in a crowded corridor. On Wednesday, they were returning their trays at lunch at the exact same time and exchanged brief smiles. On Thursday, they almost ran into each other at the restroom door, which is when Aleksi learnt Olli had regained his voice, mumbling a small ‘oops’ after having bumped into Aleksi.
On Friday, at the last recess of the day, Olli’s friend Joonas grabbed Aleksi by his wrist and pulled him into an empty classroom.
“Wait here,” he ordered, and utterly confused as he was, Aleksi had no choice but to obey.
A moment later Joonas returned, pushing a red-cheeked Olli into the room before promptly leaping back to the corridor, closing the door behind him.
For one long, anxious moment, neither of them said anything, Aleksi because he was still too baffled by the latest turn of events to open his mouth, and Olli because he was… Olli.
“Ummmm…” Olli finally said, his voice a little hoarse, so he cleared his throat and tried again. “I just… ummm… there’s this… band… tomorrow…”
Aleksi had to bite his lip, both at how adorable Olli was, fumbling with his fingers as words fell out of his mouth one by one, as well as to keep himself from blurting out ‘yes’ before Olli even got around to asking him anything.
“And I was just… thinking if… ‘cuz I have an extra ticket… so… I thought maybe you–”
“Yeah!” To Aleksi’s turmoil, his tongue could sometimes be quicker than his brain. “I mean… what?”
Behind the classroom door, someone clicked their tongue.
“Yeah, ummmm.” Olli scratched the back of his neck. “So yeah. Would you… like to come? To the show? On Saturday? With me? Maybe? I mean, of course you already have plans–”
“I don’t!” Aleksi hurried to say. “I can come. But… will your friends be coming too though?”
Olli shook his head. Aleksi decided not to dwell on what the evident horror in Olli’s eyes was a sign of. It might have been because he, too, thought it was a little too soon for Aleksi and Joel to make amends – or maybe he was just that terrified of being seen with Aleksi in public.
“No, they won’t. I mean, Joonas was supposed to, but he, ummmmmm, he’s going… ummmm…” Olli’s gaze wandered towards the door, as if for help.
“To my great-uncle’s funeral!” the door whispered at him.
“To his great-uncle’s funeral,” Olli confirmed.
“A-ha,” Aleksi nodded. “Sorry for your loss,” he said to the door.
“...Thanks,” the door replied. Holding back his laughter, Aleksi turned back to Olli who, for the first time since Joonas had urged them on the stage of their current scene, was looking at Aleksi, his round eyes expectant and hopeful for Aleksi’s final answer. Aleksi thought of taking a step closer to him, perhaps even gently touching his hand, but decided against it before his brain would command his limbs to make such reckless movements.
“Guess I’ll see you on Saturday at…?”
“At six. At Sandro’s.”
If Aleksi didn’t get a wink of sleep the following night, it wasn’t only because of excitement; the moment he laid his head on his pillow and closed his eyes, his mind was filled with pictures of a boy with twinkling eyes and a bashful smile, keeping him awake until he fell asleep to them.
~*~
Aleksi couldn’t bring himself to care if he looked a little dumb, smiling to himself and leaning his chin on his palm at eight o’clock the next Monday. Even the teacher announcing a pop quiz could not have washed away the dopey grin that had been painted on his lips since Saturday evening.
He was smiling at the way Olli’s eyes had brightened when he had spotted Aleksi in the crowd. He was smiling at Olli’s shy offer to get him a Pepsi. He was smiling at how star-struck Olli had looked when the band had first got on stage and the way he had lost himself in the music, rocking his head and closing his eyes as if to let the bass lines and guitar riffs swallow him whole. The band had been excellent, Aleksi had to agree, but more than half the time, all Aleksi had seen or heard was Olli.
And for the last three minutes of the show, all Aleksi had felt was Olli; more specifically, he had felt Olli’s hand searching for his, fumbling and hesitating until it finally clasped Aleksi’s during the final song of the band’s setlist, a melancholy rock ballad that prompted lighters and cellphone flashlights to be lit. In Aleksi’s eyes, they were all dim in comparison to the glimmer in Olli’s eyes.
Lying in his bedroom later that evening and throughout the entire next day, Aleksi had still felt the warmth of Olli’s hand in his, even though they had let each other go as soon as the stage lights had been turned off.
“Hi.” Olli’s voice brought Aleksi from Saturday evening back to Monday morning.
“Hi,” he simply answered. There were a million things he wanted to say to Olli, but his sleepy, happy brain was still working on finding the exact words.
The smile on Olli’s face told him he’d have time to figure it out, at his own pace.
In the meantime, Aleksi could always improvise, and so he picked up his pencil.
They both stared at the tiny heart on the corner of Olli’s notebook, and just when Aleksi was about to convince himself he had made a terrible mistake, Olli took the pencil out of his hand.

Part 1 A Regular Night Off  Chapters: 1/1 - Summary:
Winter opened the door and entered. Even though she spent most nights in her personal quarters at the military base, it was good to return home every so often.
Home obviously not being Schnee Manor, which back when she was younger, she used to only ever refer to as “home” as a formality. After she had been officially and financially cut off, the first thing she decided on getting the moment she started making her own money was her very own place away from the manor. Away from him. Just thinking about that person made her blood boil to the point where it almost clouded her vision.
She took off her gloves and her white military coat. While neatly hanging the coat on the hanger in the small doorway and putting the gloves in one of the pockets, she noticed the folded weapon on the floor leaning against the hanger. A weapon she was all too familiar with. All anger seemed to almost immediately vent out of her and smiling gently she walked into the living room to look for the owner of said weapon.
Part 2 Partners Chapters: 1/1 - Summary:
Winter was standing inside the airship, she couldn’t bring herself to sit down, like some of her fellow students. Her arms were crossed in front of her chest and she was tapping her finger on her upper arm. She was trying not to pay too much attention to the chatter of the other students, even though or maybe exactly because it was mostly about her. After all she was the heiress of the Schnee Dust Company.
She was also in their group of initiates, which meant there was a chance one of them could become her partner during this. This being the Atlas Academy Initiation which they were all about to take part in. Winter had worked too hard to screw up now and she was trying her best to concentrate on the task ahead which was, to begin with, a deliberate jump out of an Atlas airplane in full flight with no parachute whatsoever. They had been in the air for about 40 Minutes and they should be arriving at the spot designated for the initiation any moment now.
“We have now reached our destination. All students get ready to be deployed.”
Part 3 The One in which they were tired Chapters: 1/1 - Summary:
Being in a special program meant that the amount of training, lessons and the workload attached to that were enormous. As such it was now the end of a particularly exhausting week and Winter was completely drained. She slouched towards the lower bunk which was hers, only to simply drop down on it face down. She closed her eyes and groaned into her pillow, pulling it closer to her face…so much for always maintaining a perfect form…Luckily she was alone, if somebody saw her like this, she would never be able to live it down.
Just as the thought of somebody maybe entering the room had left her mind she heard the door being unlocked. A measly “Nooooooooo…” was all Winter was capable of thinking as she heard the door open.
Part 4 Good Together Chapters: 1/1 - Summary:
„This looks super sketchy.“
Cassie’s eyes were narrowed and her ears pulled back. Winter couldn’t help but notice how “suspicion” was undoubtedly written all over her. From what very little time she had spent with her new partner Winter had realized that she seemed like the type of person who was relatively easy to read.
Winter preferred that kind of person, she’s already had enough pretense and phoniness in her life. Winter couldn’t help but to think about how strange it was for her to be standing in an abandoned dust mine with a stranger who she had met not too long ago and still feel more at ease with herself than she had ever felt at Schnee Manor.
They had been walking inside of the mine for some time, when they found a small railway line. It was presumably used to transport tools and utensils and they had decided they would follow it in hopes that it would lead them to one of the caches they were required to find during the Atlas Academy initiation.
“Well ‘sketchy’ isn’t a word I would use, but I agree…still this is definitely a right spot.”
Part 5 Overtime Chapters: 1/1 - Summary:
Winter sighed. She had read the same two lines for about the fifth time now.
The general had been out on routine military base inspections around Remnant and she had picked up the paper work while he was gone. Usually Winter didn’t have any problems picking up where General Ironwood had left off but with the upcoming Vytal Festival in Vale and all of the security measurements Atlas was meant to provide during that time, it seemed like her usual workload had at least doubled.
She was just thinking about having some coffee brought to her office, when she heard knocking on her door.
Part 6 A Bother Chapters: 1/1 - Summary:
It was a late Friday afternoon, classes were finished and Winter was sitting behind her desk, trying to grind through a report which was due by Monday. She was well into it and she figured that if she kept going like this she’ll be done by the evening, so she could review everything over the weekend. She had started early because she wanted it to be absolutely perfect. Winter already knew that she wouldn’t like her current first draft and she would need the time to change and add to it.
She grabbed one of the books she had been using as a reference to read up on certain aspects in her report, when she suddenly had a strange feeling…she closed the book immediately, slammed it over her head and felt resistance.
“Ugh.” - Bullseye. Winter felt a hand drop onto her shoulder. A hand which was attached to an arm that would have otherwise moved around her shoulders and belonged to her partner. A partner who was now standing behind her and slightly teary-eyed holding her nose.
Part 7 Warmth Chapters: 1/1 - Summary:
When Winter entered their room carrying her notebooks and books she borrowed from the library she found her partner sleeping on the lower bunk, the one that at the beginning Winter had claimed for herself. Ever since the two of them had first taken a nap together a while back, Winter would find her partner more often fast asleep like this on top of her bed. She had concluded that Cassie simply couldn’t be bothered to climb up into her own bed whenever she was exhausted and while Winter had at first been annoyed at her partner’s level of laziness, she also couldn’t blame her for taking those occasional naps to begin with. Not only were their schedules packed due to being in a special program, but Winter, during her own sleepless nights, had more than once noticed her partner suffering from nightmares that had her tossing at night. And while Winter could see her partner suffering, she also didn’t really know how to handle the situation.
Winter recalled how when they were both still children her younger sister would every once on a while knock on her room door whenever she had a nightmare.
Part 8 A Regular Night Off (cont’d nsfw) Chapters: 1/1 - Summary:
Winter and her partner were still sitting on the sofa, cuddled up and simply enjoying each other’s company.
They weren’t paying much attention to the program they were currently watching and Winter had leisurely been drawing patterns on her partners palm and around her fingers, gently massaging two weeks of weapon-wielding strain out of it. Just what had she been doing? Wiping out an entire Grimm nest? As long as she got home safe, Winter rarely asked about the specifics. She knew that her partner could take care of herself. She was also, thankfully, a lot less reckless than she used to be, back in their academy days. Still Winter would be lying if she said that she wasn’t occasionally pacing around at night when her partner had spend more than a few days away on a mission without contacting her. Winter nuzzled closer to her partner and felt her shift slightly.
“Win-ter.“ Her partner’s voice was soft and she nudged the side of Winter’s head with her nose.
“Hm?” In response Winter propped herself up a little. She felt another quick nudge as she moved and then a kiss was placed on her temple. First the one, then a second one, lingering. A soft quiet laugh escaped Winter.
“Let’s go to bed then.“
Part 9 The Stranger (Bonus Story) Chapters: 1/1 - Summary:
Weiss was taking a walk through the empty hallways of Atlas Academy. Ever since she and her teammates and friends had come to Atlas she had been feeling restless, but she also knew that it had been necessary.
When she had broken out of the manor and left her home kingdom a few weeks ago she didn’t think that she would be so back soon, let alone living in the dorms of Atlas Academy with her friends.
Friends and teammates who had always been by her side to support her and she couldn’t be more grateful and happy to have them. Winter as well, was now able to be by her side to train and teach her like she used to be able to before she left for her own combat training. At first Weiss had felt lonely when she saw her sister leave, but Winter had also been teaching her that she should be able to stand on her own two feet. If she kept up with her training and continued to get stronger she too could choose her own path. Weiss had been determined to follow suit and chase after her and as harsh as it may have appeared at the time, she was grateful for having been pushed this hard by her sister.
Part 10 Apart Chapters: 10/10 - Summary:
Winter had entered their room to find a bunch of weapon parts spread all over most of the floor.
A week of compulsory holidays was coming up and starting tomorrow the academy was giving its students a small break. Most of them used that time to return to their homes, quite a few however still remained at Atlas Academy. Especially those who originally came from one of the other kingdoms considered the traveling for such a relatively short amount of time simply too much of a hassle. Being from Mistral Winter’s partner was one of those students who stayed. She was planning to use this time to completely take apart, clean and readjust her weapon.
As for Winter…She put the books she had borrowed inside of her suitcase and closed it up. Her hand remained on the lid. Schnee Manor wasn’t too close to Atlas Academy, but it also definitely wasn’t far away enough for her to justify staying at the academy for the upcoming week. She was sure that she still could have made up some kind of excuse, but it was a holiday after all and more than anything she wanted to at least return for the sake of her younger siblings and mother. She certainly wasn’t looking forward to whatever pompous dinner party Jacques was planing…
Part 11 The Stranger (Bonus Story Followup) Chapters: 1/1 - Summary:
This picks up shorty after Part 9 of the Series - The Stranger (Bonus Story) —-
Winter entered her private quarters at the military base.
She had just accompanied her younger sister back to her dorm room and decided to quickly go back to her own room. Weiss had been taking a walk around the academy and gotten as far as the military wing where she had coincidentally met her partner moments before Winter arrived to pick up said partner.
Her partner who was sitting on Winter’s bed, a book next to her, and now fighting to hastily put on an arm sling.
Winter sighed.
“Why do you never listen?”
Winter walked towards her partner who was now pouting to the side.
Part 12 Step by Step Chapters: 1/1 - Summary:
Winter had received a message from her partner asking her to come to their room.
Her partner usually wasn’t the type to send messages asking for her to come and meet her somewhere. ‘Pragmatism’ as Cassie called it or ‘laziness’ as Winter called it, had her simply use her semblance most of the time to materialize somewhere close to Winter whenever she needed something from her. Or she would just come and quickly get her whenever they needed to be somewhere together.
Cassie also usually didn’t care much about whoever she would give a heart attack by simply appearing out of nowhere.
And so curious as to why her partner had specifically asked her to come and meet her, Winter had quickly packed up her things in the library and started to walk back to their shared room.
When she entered the room her partner had been sitting on the lower bunk with her knees up against her chest and her face burrowed on top of them.
Part 13 Apart: C-Side Chapters: 1/1 - Summary:
This runs parallel to the Apart Story Arc/Part 10 of the Series and narrates a day of Cassie Grey’s holiday while Winter was at the manor. —– It was late in the afternoon when Cassie rematerialized into the double room.
She had just picked up her weapon which she had dropped off at one of the academy’s facilities this morning. Cassie had spend the past two days cleaning and readjusting it herself in her shared room, but there was no way she could freshen up the paint here.
She simply didn’t have the time to neatly remove the old and apply the new paint on her own. She also couldn’t do it without basically poisoning herself with the fumes in the room. And that’s even if she was to crack open a window the entire time and overnight and also risk freezing to death in her sleep.
Cassie also would have had to go back to combat lessons without a weapon, because there was no way the paint would have completely dried in time by the end of the holidays.
The Atlesian military however provided the academy with facilities that allowed her to simply drop off her weapon in the morning, input the paint job she wants done on a terminal and simply come back to pick it up all ready in the afternoon.
Part 14 Comfort and Ease 1/1 Chapters: 1/1 - Summary:
Winter’s head was resting on her arms on top of her desk. She had finished every report and piece of homework for the week and she had connected a pair of earbuds to her scroll. She had closed her eyes and been listening for a while when she suddenly felt something close to her head. She bolted up and immediately removed the earbuds.
“C-cassie, when did you come here?”
Her partner was standing next to her with a smug smile on her face. Had she been so engrossed that she hadn’t even felt her materialize? Or had Cassie actually used the door for once and she simply hadn’t heard her?
“Oh, just a few moments ago…”
“I see, did you find what you needed from the library?”
Winter tried to immediately distract her while subtly pushing the pause button on her scroll and turning it face down. She wasn’t going to risk her partner asking questions she really didn’t feel like answering.
“I did. I already placed the books on my desk. You didn’t notice however since you were so absorbed in whatever you were listening to just right now.”
Dang. Winter should have known better.
Part 15 A Partner’s Present Chapters: 1/1 - Summary:
It was the weekend and Winter was quietly working away on her academy assignments at her desk. She was alone in the room.
In fact she had been alone since this morning. She had even woken up to a note beside her pillow telling her that her partner will be back around noon.
She reached for her scroll and sighed. It was already some time past noon. Maybe whatever Cassie was doing took longer than expected.
But Winter didn’t mind. Because as much as treasured and loved her partner, today of all days she simply wanted to be left alone. Just as the thought had crossed her mind she felt how her partner was about to materialize behind her.
One of Cassie’s arms moved around her shoulder and her head dropped on the other side.
“Winnn-teeeerrr.” She was cheerfully humming her name.
“What do you want?”
Winter was a little irritable today and she really wasn’t in the mood for any of her games.
“Aw, don’t be like that.”
Cassie chuckled and nuzzled against her.
“Here.”
Part 16 Semblance Chapters: 1/1 - Summary:
Cassie was alone in her room.
Her grandmother was in the kitchen making light dinner preparations for later. Cassie had greeted her from the front door without going to see her and she had immediately sprinted to her room on the second floor afterwards.
The small Faunus sat by her bed on the floor, her arms around her knees and her face burrowed in them. Her body hurt, her elbow was bruised, her sweater was torn in that place. Her ears hang low and they were sore from all of the tearing and pulling.
——– ——–
Winter was in her father’s office.
A gala he had put together at the manor had just ended. She had played the violin well, she had quietly stayed by his side and behind him.
Everything had went well up until the moment one of his business partner’s sons had asked her to dance and she had refused.
Part 17 Rest Chapters: 1/1 - Summary:
It was the evening and Winter was sitting on her bed.
She put the text book she was reading down on her knees to look at her partner who was currently at her desk grinding away at a report and sighed.
Cassie had been at her desk for quite a few hours now and Winter could tell that her partner was getting increasingly more frustrated at the subject Winter knew she had no interested in whatsoever.
What’s more, her partner was bored by the subject and she hated the professor teaching it. And Winter couldn’t blame her since she as well couldn’t have cared any less for him.

back on track || self-para
Date: January 27th
Location: Cygnet Skating Club*
Characters: Daichi Miyano & Coach Sergei Lebedev (NPC)
The month of January had been rather slow in terms of training. Ever since his Nationals competition in Japan, where he had the misfortune of losing the National title, Daichi found it hard to find motivation to train and skate. Possibly even before that, finding out his close rinkmate was retiring after this season may have played a role in him not feeling on top of his game at Nationals. But after that, he really had no excuse other than I’m busy studying for my classes, which, in his defense, was actually true considering he hoped to finally graduate this semester. But mostly, it was the crippling lack of motivation.
Even finding happiness in a brand new relationship with Sebastián didn’t fix things. If anything, it offered more of a distraction for him, though Sebas wouldn’t be Sebas without noticing the recent lackluster approach towards his on-ice sessions at the rink.
And then there was Haneul. Sweet, sweet Moon Haneul from their rink, who traitorously told Sebas, who was away in Europe for the European Championships, that Daichi never even showed up to practice throughout that week of competitions--something Daichi had dismissively promised he’d do, considering so many of the skaters (and coaches) would be away either at Euros or at the US Nationals.
Daichi would be mad if he didn’t acknowledge the fact that Haneul was probably legitimately worried about him, and that he really needed to get back to training soon, with his own competition in South Korea just around the bend.
-----
Euros and US Nationals came to an end, and come early Monday morning, Daichi was back at the rink practicing his free program step sequence when he locked eyes with his coach at the boards. Lebedev motioned for him to come over in that manner that couldn’t be disobeyed and Daichi reluctantly skated towards that end of the rink and stepped off the ice, promptly putting on his precious skate guards.
“You. Come to my office,” Lebedev said. His voice was strict and commanding but the underlying care about his skaters was ever present and wasn’t lost on Daichi after years under his tutelage.
“I’ve been letting you slide under the radar but don’t think I’m dumb and haven’t noticed,” he said in that same voice as he stepped into the office, held the door for his skater, and then closed the door in order to give the two of the some privacy. That was a little odd, Daichi thought, though he decided not to think too much of it as he took a seat in the all-too familiar blue chair, his hands coming to rest together between his legs in a comfortable pose.
“How is Sebas’ knee?” he asked. Of course, it was the first thing on his mind, after watching that particular fall in his boyfriend’s free skate at the competition. He trusted Sebas, but he also knew how the both of them tended to downplay their injuries, so he had to ask their coach.
“He’ll be fine, but don’t deflect,” Lebedev called him out. “Don’t change the subject,” he repeated in easier terms. “Here’s what we’re going to do. I was thinking we can start bringing back your quadruple flip.”
That was enough to capture Dai’s undivided attention, eyes widening almost comically, his frame angling forward, lips parted in surprise before he was able to come up with a verbal response. And once he was, all he managed out was, “Really?”
Lebedev nodded his head, a much kinder expression on his face. “If you want. I know you had trouble with it in the past, so if you feel like--”
“No! I mean, yes, I want to do it.” It was the fifth quad. He had the other four in his programs already, which meant that his coach was suggesting... “Five quad free program?”
“Would that motivate you? I know you’ve been in a rut, I’m not blind.”
“But, not for Four Continents, right?” Daichi asked, considering that competition started in about a week and a week was definitely not enough time to add a quad that had been so problematic for him in the past due to its inside edge takeoff that he ended up taking it out of his program right before a competition, indefinitely, despite having had success with it in practice.
“No, definitely not. But do your best at that competition and we’ll work on adding it for Worlds.”
Daichi obediently nodded his head. “Okay. Actually I was thinking to change free program layout for Worlds. Micah said he can do choreo with me again. Then we can add quad flip.”
“It’s that pesky inside edge.” The two of them had a private laugh about it, both knowing exactly what the other was thinking. Lebedev knew every single one of his problem points possibly better than he did himself, and that had always been comforting, to be able to trust that his coach wouldn’t let him develop bad skating habits as ways to cheat around those problem areas. And it wasn’t just Daichi, either; it was everyone who trained with him.
He already felt a lot better than he had that morning, than he had all month. He did want to do well at Four Continents, a competition that had been kind to him more than once in the past. And he was now looking forward to getting back that missing quad that had always evaded him.
After chatting for a bit longer and deciding it was time to get back on ice, Lebedev patted his shoulder on their way out and then even ruffled his hair affectionately, and almost as a joke, he said, “I hope you’re ready to get back in that harness after 4CC." Of course, Daichi knew that he wouldn’t be off the hook from that one, and while he found it fun to use the harnass to practice extreme jumps like quints just for fun, when it was for actual training he always tended to complain about it a little and get impatient about getting out of it. He didn’t hide the displeasure on his face when he agreed to it, though it wasn’t total displeasure and he knew Lebedev could see the drive having returned to his eyes and gestures
As he went ahead, eager to get back on the ice, he heard his coach calling after him, “No compulsory quads! And fix that bracket turn from earlier; if you do that in competition it’ll bring your level down!” Daichi knew that wasn’t even something that his coach should have to remind him of--he’d been cheating some of the elements in his step sequence in his somewhat lazy run-through and he was thankful that Lebedev refused to let it slide and called him out on it.
He took off his guards, pressed them to his forehead briefly much like he did in his pre-competition ritual, put them aside, and re-entered the rink, this time with the intention of giving it his all.

SBWL (Sabaweli): To Tell You About My Campus
Tumblr media
The end is gravely interesting. I begin from the end.
Excuse my ignorance but I hate the person who came with a methodology that students be tested on Tests and Exams so as to check if they are fit to proceed to the next level of their studies, Tautona who speaks Sepedi, Sesotho and Setswana fluently in a predominately Nguni area, cursing and moaning chatting to his girlfriend.
Epistemology. You see, you are now being a typical politician on campus. What is wrong with you? Why always use these big words mnganiwam? Daluxolo reprimanding his friend from Sekhukhuniland in Limpopo. Rumor says, that Tautona, is a product of parents who are witchdoctors since he is from Limpopo. Daluxolo always misrepresents Limpopo for ‘Limpompo’ yet he is the first to label Tautona a lekwerekwere because he speaks broken isiXhosa.
Often when they attend ceremonies, funerals and orphanages in Mthatha, Centane, Tsolo, Ntambankulu, Msombomvu, when Tautona is invited as a speaker, this idiotic moron from Bizana infamously known, as Daluxolo feel utterly embarrassed. For his friend sounds like as if he is lekwerekwere.
‘Epistemology, simply means,’ he would first clear his throat as if something is about to choke him: ‘ehhhh, that it is philosophy of knowledge.’ By know we should know everything that exists has a philosophy, even football does. Besides who said a word is a big word, if you don’t knoqw the meaning?
Daluxolo would raise an argument as if he is in a mass meeting, ‘don’t patronize me, you are a fanatic of bombastic words!’
‘Come on, if you don’t know a meaning of a word look it up in a dictionary, there is no such a thing as a big word,’ Tautona adds: ‘no matter the size of the word, for as long as you don’t know its meaning, then it is precisely a big word.’
This conversation between the two would go on and on to an extent where they would just attract a crowd playing pool in the tuckshop with curiosity. Rebuttals from Tautona who is an Africanist rejecting a fallacious usage of the word ‘lekwerekwere’ in a context that many Afrikan brothers and sisters were killed since ‘lekwerekwere’ is associated with a foreigner who is in South Afrika coming from Afrika. Europeans are arrogant, look how they have successfully divided and conquered us. In absentia we are killing each other defending their notorious colonial borders which are a consequence of their Berlin Conference of 1884. How dare we see a foreigner coming from the same motherland soil as all of us?
The end of everything that transpired on campus is remarkable and fascinating. For the first since 2016 Daluxolo has managed to get a minimum of 40% for all his modules thus he has DP and qualifies to exams for all his modules. For those who didn’t know what is DP it represents that you have ‘duly performed’ to write an Exam.
Their campus is very small with about 6708 registered students in 2019. It has exactly three Faculties: Engineering, Education and Business Management. Daluxolo is doing a BTech in Human Resources (HR). Tautona is totally disturbed to learn that for BTech there is a module called Research Methodology: whereby one is ridiculously expected to define what is research, its purpose after you have practically done the actually research. Decolonising a historically and presently ‘black university’ is doing away with such backwardness because it undermines the intellectual capacity of an Afrikan student.
Tautona, is residing on-campus at Block N. It is haunted by evil spirits, from Nigeria, the fellows from the room neighboring his once alleged. How those came remains a deeply miraculous untold narrative. Remarkably his residence has it all. From unashamedly and fully devoted bazalwane Christians, who are not afraid to daily worship the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit trice in a day. To those who consume liquor almost as if they want to commit suicide digging their graves thus beating God’s time when He will decide for them to die. Finally severally folks who are ‘politicians’ from commonly known major political student organizations on campus.
Quite depressing is that this block N is waterless. Other blocks on-campus do have water yet this block N seems to always run out of water. The result of this is disastrous: the students and Aunty who works there suffers. For students, is when they want to shower, to cook and take a shit. For Aunty who cleans is often confronted by toilets where people took a shit without flushing. Or on Mondays when she cleans and there is just no water. Thanks God for our wonderful sweety-pie all in the name of green tank outside who is our savior as far a water is concerned.
Daluxolo has a five-60 at block A. He is terrified by black cats often he does question how the SRC and University managers are planning on removing that black cat at the bathroom of that residence. Frankly it was one Azania Azania who traumatized Daluxolo that the black cat has now little kittens when she recently posted on Facebook. She dropped it hilariously, little she knew, she out rightly nearly drove Daluxolo to comma. Since he is from Bizana he is forced to ‘man-up’ because we live in an aggressive patriarchal society. And certainly he does not want to seem effeminate for fearing cats.
‘I will draw the computer, mouse, case, keyword,’ continued an Indian lecturer: ‘I want to demonstrate something, I am sorry you are studying Information Technology (IT) without any computers.’ This drives Tautona furiously insane. He does not even have a laptop for that matter. Even if he did, it would have been ineffective for the lecturer would not give special treatment to him. Relatively students here come from poor background and there enemy is the class struggle. He was informed that computers were last bought in 2010 and were never replace. Moreover, as a result, over the years’ students have decided to be thugs and steal mouse’s, cables, keyboards and the like.
The beginning. Eish, my younger sister is here for walkings-in. I pleaded with her to apply last year and she only applied for NSFAS. Now I have no option but make sure she is part of this multitudes who want to enter in the system. But it seems like Mafoko took valuable lessons from the Head of ICT Mr Selwane. They are here to shot. I see us being wounded by bullets today. Yeah neh! Damn being an Afrikan student you always get shot at, even for demanding a right to access education?
‘Registration is a mess today Daluxolo,’ asserted Tautona.
‘Well I feel like the campus shutdown is inevitable,’ he responded.
‘No, no, no, they must wait. I am targeting EMS for my younger sister.’
‘Oh yes, I heard students are being admitted there, quickly rush’.
On campus there is not even water, there is a threat that Student Affairs is threatening to prohibit special cases to allow students without paying a cent. The SRC or Interim SRC must never mislead students. The political power here on campus rests with political formations, not SRC or certainly individuals in SRC. Daluxolo, ‘if they don’t unite for the betterment of an Afrikan child then they will become victims of University managers’. Mnganiwam, ‘I heard that the reason SRC Elections did not take place last year is because one person stopped them!’ Tautona jiggled.
‘Don’t be a fool, or are you ignorant?’
‘Well……….’
Daluxolo interjects: ‘We have no messiah here in our campus.’ Annoyingly he continues: ‘SRC Elections did not happen because the new imposed SRC Constitution was rejected and Student Affairs could not find a company to run elections in Butterworth after IEC chickened out on them’.
‘But you are making sense, how could elections be stopped by one person?’
The leadership of the Interim SRC is then calling a mass meeting. Wow. My younger sister is taken at EMS for Education. Let me ring mama. ‘Hello mama, it is very tough, I got her inside but they want R300 immediately’. Yes, I got old-lady today. She is stingy like an HOD of IT who failed dismally to give students a braai in Durban for their Academic Tour though it was part of the trip, now I will pocket R800 remember R500 is my personal allowance she promised me. In addition, I am ready to discuss at the mass meeting today and eventually argue we need mass action. I really do not have registration fee and I do not qualify for NSFAS because of N+2.
For Daluxolo and Tautona are an epitome of violence from a society whereby egalitarianism exists on paper in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa not pragmatically. In their campus they spend their academic life in protest demanding basic things like water and lecturers which are compulsory for teaching and learning. More time spend in the national road N2 then being in class. Moreover, protesting for meal allowances because hunger is their biggest enemy.
Now Engineering is threatened to be taken away from campus. Education tried its tricks with PGCE, but apparently, the matter is resolved. However, now that ABET is replaced by Foundation Phase, why BEd for Technical and EMS is not uploaded online for next year on applications? ‘Remember also in Accounting we won’t have BTech for Auditing and CMA since they are now replaced by Advance Diploma,’ concludes Daluxolo almost as if he is a god of thinking.
Allowing a government that is ideologically bankrupted to bring about meaningful progress in academia is a hopeless dream.
It is Friday night. The music from Chesa is too loud. Daluxolo and Tautona are funded today by NSFAS ingenile imali ya bafundi. They have all bought groceries now it is time for socialization with the youth, the energetic and vibrant people. Mingling is fundamentally fundamental.
‘I feel intoxicated now…can we go?’
Daluxolo tipsy retorting: ‘let us walk with other students.’
‘Why is that so mnganiwam? I am not afraid of amapharaphara!’
Just last week they took a phone, bank cards and a pair takkies from this other boy from block J. He was pretty much brutalized and couldn’t stop cursing.
‘You are drunk wena Tautona, I ain’t risking anything,’ an anxious Daluxolo.
‘Okey…oke, I will go dance with that girl akere you are a shumane yourself Daluxolo.’
The residence disky gusha tournament is continuing. We are also have seen people who can easily make it to PSL and salvage the sinking ship of the Happy People, Orlando Pirates, but unfortunately they are disadvantaged by where they are based. These players are just marvelous to watch for playing this beautiful game so exceptionally.
‘We won a gusha,’ excitedly remarks Tautona, almost as if he was a player.
Finally he is done with Exams but going to Limpopo it is too soon. He is planning to go to Bizana with Daluxolo in end of November. He knows very well that there is an injury of Wi-Fi in the rural shanty village of Limpopo and more home chores since he is the only man in the family after his father disappeared in the big city of lights. Stalling perhaps is a necessity.
Both Tautona and Daluxolo are tested in their trials and tribulations and will not rest until they are proud graduates of their campus. It has significantly mold and shaped their thinking. Success is a must and the only way out. It does not matter how long it takes them, nobody knows their story but quitting is not an option.

PERSONAL VENTING WARNING
I think there’s a grand total of like two of y’all that aren’t porn bots but whatever. This is more for me to set things straight in my own head than anything, feel free to read though. It’ll be a long one.
So, in March, I came to uni for my first year, and met and started dating an amazing guy (or a guy who I thought was amazing). I’ll describe how we met (it will be relevant later on). During O week at my uni, there were lectures that were compulsory for everyone to attend, and you attended the one for your course. It was basically an introduction kind of thing to your course and the content you would be studying. My ex and I are both studying a Bachelor of Geoscience, and there are only six of us in that course. I spoke about a dozen words to him that first day, he seemed like a nice guy, and I thought he was gorgeous. The next day, we had to go to a general lecture for everyone studying what could be considered a biological science. I went in and sat down by myself near the back. About five minutes after the lecture started, I heard the doors slam open. I thought “lol rip whoever that is”. The person who cam in came and sat down next to me. I saw that it was the guy from yesterday, my ex. The lecture we were in was a series of smaller lectures, so when the professors were swapping around, we started chatting. I have never clicked with someone so quickly in my life. After the lecture was over, the uni provided a free pizza lunch. We got some pizza, and sat down on the floor to talk. We talked for two and a half hours. We didn’t notice everyone else leave. We didn’t notice that the tables holding the pizza were packed up and put away. When we did finally realise, we just decided to move somewhere else and keep walking. We went to the front verandah of the beautiful old original university building that overlooks the valley, and talked for another five hours. FIVE HOURS. It felt like five seconds. Once it got dark, we agreed that we couldn’t stay there, and he said that he had to get home for dinner (he grew up in the town where the uni is, so he still lives with his parents). There was a party on at the uni club that night, so I invited him to come with me, but he was reluctant. About an hour later, he messaged me saying that he was going to come. Bit of a long evening short, we went to pre drinks in my college block together, went up to the club together, and ditched it after about five minutes to go and sit on the verandah of the old building again. We were there for about an hour before I got too cold (it was a toga party so I was wearing a K-Mart tablecloth, naturally). We went to my room, got jumpers, stayed up there for another hour, then got in his car and drove around town for an hour or so. By this point it was 2am so he took me home. That was a thursday. That Saturday, he invited me to go to the pub with him and his best friend. I went, and met his best friend, who is an absolute legend, and very relevant to this long story. I had a drink, his mate had a drink, and then it started getting loud so we decided to go for a walk. We walked across town to a beautiful old building, and after chasing a possum around for five minutes, the friend decided to go back to the pub. We decided we wanted to go back to the verandah at campus. So we did. We got jumpers from my room on the way, and my ex ended up wearing his and mine, because he was freezing. He was still shaking though, and I though he was cold, so I got him to sit on the ground, and I sat behind him and wrapped my arms around him. He started shaking harder (I later found out he was nervous, not cold). We stayed like this for a while, before I started getting incredibly worried about the shaking, and suggested that we get in his car, because it has heating. So we did, he stopped shaking, and we drove up to a lookout that we had been at on thursday night while we were driving around. Up there, we did the same sitting thing for a few hours. In the car on the way back we determined that we were dating. Everything was amazing for about seven weeks (or so I thought). I lost my virginity to him, and he was not the first guy I ever dated, but he was the first guy I fell in love with (I’m still in love with him and I fucking hate myself for it). Anyway. We would hang out in my dorm room, I’d go to dinner at his parents’ house on the weekends, everything was great. Then, after about 3 weeks, I’m not really sure when it was, he stopped spending time with me. After about two weeks of not seeing each other except in the classes we have together, he told me that he had some bad news. He told me that he wanted to focus more on his uni work (which was all that he did anyway) and was going to spend less time with me. In my head, I said; “the fuck are you going to do, not turn up to lectures, its the only time we spend together anymore”, but I said to him, “yeah ok, it’s important to prioritise your school work”. So, things continued exactly as they had been for the past two weeks because there was no time together to cut back on. This went for another two weeks or so. The thursday night before last, I was thinking about how we hadn’t spent any time together for a month, how he would never hold my hand, hug me, kiss me, which were all things we had been doing before. So I called him about it and asked what was going on. At first he danced around it, denying everything, saying there was nothing wrong. I wouldn’t take that answer though, so he said: “Ok, I’ll tell you the truth. I haven’t loved you for a month”. This devastated me so much that I immediately threw up. I started sobbing, and I could hear him on the phone (it was on speaker) saying things like “I didn’t mean to hurt you”. I ran find my friends, but they were all pre drinking to go out in another block of the college so I couldn’t find them. So, I went back to my room, where he was still on the line. I sat down and cried for a few minutes, before I took a deep breath and said “We are not doing this over the phone. Come up here now”. He agreed, and came up to the college. We talked, and ended up cuddling and kissing on my bed. We agreed that I needed to work on being “less negative” (I have severe depression and use dark humour as a coping mechanism, and self centred bubble-boy couldn’t handle it). We also agreed that he needed to actually put some effort in to the relationship, and spend some time with me. After a couple of hours, he left, and I slept fine, but the next morning from when I woke up I began to feel worse and worse and worse. I ended up calling him in the afternoon, when I was about to sit my chemistry mid trimester exam, because I felt so bad and had to talk it out with him. We pretty much just had the hell phone call from the night before all over again. About ten minutes after we hung up from that, he messaged me and said that his friend was staging an intervention, and would come pick me and one of my friends up that evening. Before we get any further in to this, if any of y’all are reading this, I just want to say that this friend is an absolutely amazing bloke, and he has been here for me the entire way through the ordeal that I’m about to go in to. So, after I sat my exam (that I failed, who would have guessed), I grabbed one of my best friends, and jumped in the car with my then-boyfriend and his friend. It was my second time meeting this friend, the first time was the night my ex and I started dating, the three of us went to the pub together. The friend and I got along like a house on fire. Anyway, the car ride was the tensest experience of my life. I could literally feel the pure rage radiating from my friend, as she was friends with my ex as well as me, and she knew exactly how the whole thing went down. We decided on going to Maccas, as the food is cheap. We went in, the boys grabbed a table in the corner, and  bought my friend some nuggets as a thankyou for coming with me. We went and sat down, and got straight in to it. My ex’s friend got my side of the story, and then his (there wasn’t much to his at all). The friend then proceeded to tell me how he was absolutely blown away by how my ex actually talked to a girl, and interacted with someone for longer than five seconds. He was actually the reason that my ex went to that party, he made him go. And he was blown away by how easily and how much we talked on the pub night. I’m really bad at telling this, but trust me, it was really profound what he said (he’s an incredibly smart man with a real way with words) and really blew me away. Over the course of about an hour, I went from shaking and staring at the floor, to smiling at my now-ex. My ex decided that he was just being silly, and he did actually love me. We had a fully lovey-dovey reunion right there in Maccas, and walked out of there hand in hand. He had promised to spend monday afternoons and one afternoon on the weekend (we have a three day weekend friday-sunday) with me. That Saturday, we went for a walk for two and a half hours, and had so much fun. We ended up cuddling and kissing in my bed after we got back, I was in heaven. The way he was playing with my fingers, staring and smiling at me, kissing me, holding me as tight to him as he possible could, all read to me that he still loved me. Then on the Monday, he came over to go for a walk again, but we couldn’t drag ourselves out of my bed for over an hour. Nothing NSFW, just cuddling and talking. It was so amazing. I was absolutely on top of the world. We were going to hang out Tuesday afternoon after our Geology prac as his brother was home from the army and  had his car and he had to wait for his dad to give him a lift home, but the prac ran so late that he went straight home. Same thing on wednesday with chemistry prac. On Thursday, he has a lecture in the morning where I don’t have one, then we have an hour, and then a lecture together. I messaged him Thursday morning asking if he wanted to grab lunch together after his lecture. He said: “yeah, sounds great”. So, after his lecture, we went to the cafe and bought food. On the way there we were chatting and laughing. I was looking for a place to sit after we got our food, and he said “Let’s go to [name of the old building with the verandah]” (it was our special spot). I was overjoyed. I thought, “oh, here he is, putting effort in to things, doing something special”. When we got there, we sat down, and he was suddenly quiet. I asked him what was wrong, and he said: “this isn’t working, I’m breaking up with you”. My world was turned upside down. I looked for some explanation, and he told me in no uncertain terms that he didn’t want to invest the time and effort in to me. He wanted his life to just be him by himself in his room. So that was that. I was utterly devastated. He told me that apparently, despite what he said, and despite what his body language told me, that we hadn’t actually wanted to give our relationship another go, that he had been lying. It had been less than a week since the intervention at Maccas. He told me that he still really wanted to be good friends, and I took him at his word. And he had to drive me an hour and a half to another town the next day so that I could catch a bus back to my hometown for the mid trimester break. The first half an hour of the car ride was no fun, but after we established that we were friends, we had a great time. That trip ended with both of us screaming take me home country roads, and having an amazing conversation at the bus stop when we got there. I got on the bus with promises to send photos of my hometown (I’m from right out in the outback, the kind of place my ex had never seen before, and he claimed he wanted to see it). So when I got home, I sent him a message, with videos of my horses running, sending red dust flying. I got a reply two days later: “oh wow, cool”. A day or so later, there were several disasters in my household, and I put a humorous spin on them, and sent him a message. No reply for a day, then, “oh wow”. As side note, my dad is a horrific, abusive bastard, and my time at home was 99% horrific due to that. I told my ex that. No reply for three days. “Oh wow, that sucks”. I ended up buying bus tickets and leaving a week early, because I couldn’t take it any longer there. I told my ex that and he said “oh cool”. Today, back at college, I booked a ticket to see endgame, and I messaged him asking him if he wanted to come see it with me, because only one of my friends is at college at the moment, and she has already seen it and doesn’t want to see it again. After three hours, he asks me what time. I tell him the time. After eight hours, he says no. So much for being friends I guess. And yeah, there’s not much point to this. If you read all of this, I’m sorry.
