It's alot harder to hide it from him, that you're drawing him, because he just notices everything about you. He finds it adorable and amusing, when you hide your notebook from him and tell him that he can't see it yet.

He's still pleasantly surprised, when you give him the notebook to him as a gift for a gift giving festival. Jing Yuan is extremely thankful and makes sure you know it with sweet praise and endearings.

He keeps the notebook at his desk in his office, so that he can look at it and think of you during longer work days. He perhaps also uses it to justify slacking off for a couple moments.

Weird question, please bear with me.

So I was in the turtle group chat talking about different methods of turtle shell repair, as one does, and then I remembered Donnie's Terrible, Rotten, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day and his metal shell.

Seeing as a turtle's shell IS their spine and a significant portion of their ribcage, does Donnie now also have a prosthetic metal spine and ribs? and all the Important Stuff that's in the spinal column - the nerves and the fluids and the like... I'm not really asking for you to explain the Deep Biology of mutant turtle skeletal structures, but I AM asking what is up with their spines - are the fused, separate, some secret third thing? inquiring minds want to know.

I think about this same thing every so often, haha. Most artists (even Peter and Kevin back in the day) draw the Turtles with a flexible plastron unlike real turtles, which you can either chalk up to artistic license and cartooning, or you can take it more literally to mean that the Turtles have a more human-type skeleton and their plastron and shell are more spongy sort of armor plating rather than bone like real-life turtles. If I was the only one working on TMNT I'd probably delve more into the biology of it and have it at the outset that the carapace is part of their skeleton and is rigid like real turtles, but it's impossible to set that kind of thing up in a series with a ton of people working on it and expect it to remain the same across the board, so I usually just don't worry about it. I'm also kind of boxed in a bit by Donatello losing his shell and, thanks to the ooze, somehow receiving a new one that Fugitoid I guess just sticks onto Don's back and he's good to go. There's a panel in that particular issue (I forget which one it was) where Don is about to be operated on and he's lying on his back on the medical bed, but I always wondered what's under his shell, then? If he has no shell I'm guessing it was a huge exposed wound, and if so why is he lying ON the giant gaping wound?! Haha. And then it's like if the Turtles' carapace is flexible in IDW TMNT, that must mean it's NOT part of their skeletal system and in that case why would Don even need a new shell? Clearly thinking too deeply about it, haha.

In any case, since I took over as writer, I've tried to go by those rules that Tom set up as much as I can, like when I had Don's old broken shell (which Tom never accounted for, where did it go after Fugitoid removed it??? So I decided to draw the old shell having been tossed into a dumpster, lol) be attached to Venus, like if the surgeon has a healing agent like ooze or the Dragon scales the way Fugitoid and Dr. Barlow did, it seems like they can just graft components (whether organic or inorganic) onto anyone however they like regardless of what the internal mutant biology is. In Venus's flashback in my Alliance #4 issue, I did draw her spinal column visible when the shell is being grafted on though, sort of as a nod to the skeletal system thing but not explicitly solidifying the biology of it.

Another way I think about it is that mutants haven't undergone any sort of evolution as a species, their biology doesn't have to "make sense" or be useful in a natural selection evolutionary way. The mutagen kinda removes all the specialized traits from an animal, so the Turtles' carapaces have lost whatever traits gave rise to regular turtles' shells over millions of years. Mutants are outside the evolutionary process, so the Turtles' shells don't have to be biologically useful or advantageous or even really have anything in common with normal turtles. The mutagen reconfigures an animal into humanoid form and it'll recode their DNA to any extent to acheive that end result, so maybe it built the Turtles' a new skeletal system and their shells are purely vestigial.

I feel like I'm getting way too deep here and it only makes it more confusing, lol. So to answer your question, if I had to pick one of the options you listed, I would pick "secret third thing." ;)

Do you have any recommendations for character modeling in blender?

Ooh boy I never know how to respond to questions like that, but I'm gonna try my best and list some stuff which helped me personally, so hopefully this will be helpful to you guys too.

A lot of what im gonna say is probably gonna sound really generic but generally speaking just watching one tutorial series and calling it a day isn't gonna cut it.

Something that helped me a whole lot was having a clear goal in mind (like I remember the first thing I wanted to do was translate my OCs in 3D). Picking something I was invested in is what pushed me to do my own research (and now its Deltarune fan animations lol). Knowing how to maintain motivation and going in with the right mindset is the most important thing imo.

I use Blender for my 3D work, which is free and open source. I personally prefer it over paid software like Maya or 3dsMax, especially for modeling and sculpting (I remember I had to use Max and Maya for a while but overall it was a pretty agonizing experience to be honest, so I switched back to Blender, which just feels a whole lot easier to use for me personally lol, but really at the end of the day just pick the software you want. This is just my personal preference). If you have a potato laptop like me, I definitely advise you to use Blender tho as it is very lightweight compared to other 3D programs, plus it can do the same things and then some. Not to mention there are way more free resources on Blender stuff so it's easier to get access to the info you need. Anyways Blender-simping over, moving on!

Tutorials are always a great idea, but you're also gonna have to learn how to do problem-solving. 3D can be a really technical and rigid medium, so being patient and knowing how to do independent learning is very important. Take a look at box-modeling, sculpting, texturing and procedural shading. Unfortunately that's gonna involve a lot of annoying situations and moments of immeasurable pain, but once you're more familiar with how things work, it's super fun and rewarding!

Don't forget to have fun and experiment! It's easy to get lost and overwhelmed by the technical aspects of 3D but it's important to just let go and make silly things. Also talking to other 3d artists with similar interests helps a ton, especially more experienced ones but I am aware not everyone has access to that (plus not everyone might want that, esp when you're an introvert like me haha!)

If you gotta sell your soul to a corporation then focusing on one particular subset is gonna be useful for animation jobs, as this is what most studios want. Some artists might like specializing into just one area, and that's totally fine but for me who prefers to be a generalist, it just kinda ruins my joy for 3D to restrict myself to just one part of it. Plus if you enjoy doing what you do, you tend to learn a lot faster anyway.

This might be a bit of an uncommon take, but one of the most stifling pieces of advice I have received from industry 3D artists is to only focus on one thing (as in, only skill up your UV-unwrapping, or only do rigging, only do hard-surface modeling, only do organic environment modeling and so on). NUH-UH! Just do what you want fam. Make the spoingle-boingles pet cats. Focus on the things you like. Make barney the dinosaur destroy the whole set. Model, rig and animate them if you want. Really, just have fun. Obviously you gotta do some self-checks and see where you need to improve, and where your strengths and weaknesses are, and focusing on those areas can be very helpful. Just make sure you're having a good time doing it, and don't be too harsh on yourself. Definitely take a break if you're overwhelmed.

You don't have to be able to draw to be good at character modeling but making turnaround sketches helps me a whole lot whenever I make 3D characters. Knowing how to draw will also benefit your sense of design and shapes, as you can use your drawing skills for texturing and adding your own flair to your models.

Another thing I would do is look at other people's 3D models and study the topology and the way they model things. This also helps a lot with motivation. Obviously you don't wanna copy, just study the way other people model things and see what other talented artists come up with! There are a bunch of free Blender rigs you can download and study on your own, not to mention useful videos and streams on YouTube. The Rain and Snow rigs are pretty awesome. Some of this stuff is behind a paywall but I recommend checking out the free resources of the "Settlers" project for highly cartoony modeling and rigging (this playlist is very useful, I didn't watch all of it but some parts have been pretty inspirational to me). Also just following 3D artists you like and looking at their art for inspiration will help you stay motivated.

Hi, i hope this question doesn't bothers you, do you have any videos of your process?, im currently starting to learn how to do digital art and have trouble knowing where to start and what to do (im always like, should i start drawing this part first?, is it better to do clean lineart or just paint over the sketch?, do i work on the lights first or the shadows?, etc)

I can probs make you a video on this at some point based on something I'm currently working on, although I have a few on my tiktok already (@ xephia) if that helps!

My process is a bit messier than many other artists - I alternate between stages of sketch and colour before I even think about ‘final colour’. I’ll start with a sketch like the ones below, then slap some rough colour on. This is because IMO colour is an important part of the composition so I want to see what works before I line. They’re not meant to be pretty or social media ready. This stage can look super messy or tidy depending on how I feel or how complicated it is. And they can look wildly different; here’s some examples:

That stage also helps me decide if I want to finish the piece or if I should abandon it (I abandon a lot). Sometimes this stage takes 15min, sometimes 2 hours, it really depends on the piece. But for me personally, it’s crucial because otherwise I find it very hard to envision how it will look later, or forget what I was planning.

Then, I do at least one more layer of ‘sketch line art’, which is basically a first layer of line art to see what works and what needs changing. I colour the important bits relatively cleanly (usually character/s) and add might some subtle shadows/gradients and/or lighting to get a feel of what it will look like finished. Sometimes I repeat this process a couple of times if I’m not happy with how the first iteration looked. This stage usually looks a little like this character sheet I’m working on, and this slice from a Kiki delivery service sketch:

It’s usually not until I’ve done all that, that I go over and do the final lineart, making it thicker, colouring the lines, redoing the flat colours, tidying it up, and adjusting where needed. Essentially I don’t start ‘finishing’ a piece until I’m happy with where everything sits and what colours I’ve picked. It’s only at this point I feel like the sketch is ready to line, and lining and final colouring can actually take less time for me than all those layers of planning somehow haha.

At this point I keep tidying, cleaning, lining, colouring, until the piece feels complete. Sometimes complete for one piece is tidier than complete for another, it really depends.

I’ll also use Procreate’s push tool to adjust things as I go in all steps - it saves a lot of time and isn’t cheating.

Although as you can probably tell from my examples, I do change this procress up a lot depending on the piece! Sometimes I’ll even paint over parts of my final piece like I did in this magical girl street. I think find whatever works for you, everyone will work differently and things like mood, energy levels, how patient you feel, how stressed you are, if you have any hand pain or shaking, and how much free time you have that day to draw can all affect your process day to day, week to week.

Some days it will be easier and more comfortable to sketch messily, other days tidier. Some days you will draw well, other days not well at all. At least for me, I find consistency almost impossible.

So I think there's no right or wrong order to do things and it's great to switch it up and keep things interesting for yourself, and different processes work for different people. Hope this helps!

ToT Main Story 10 Thoughts/Commentary (Part 3)

Whoa MC!! It's really easy to forget that she's got experience in drama/theater because it's mostly in the card stories (Artem's 1st birthday, SSR Por Una Cabeza), but she definitely hasn't lost her touch because she's still a good actress!

(Actually, more about acting later. That's why there are four parts to this HAHA.)

But in the moment, even in the stress, she's still able to believably act as if she's turning on Vyn, as if she doesn't know him, as if she is perfectly capable of killing him. Even if she was just in a near-death situation, she's really good at keeping her cool. MC/Rosa is definitely not to be underestimated.

Ah, the NSB is coming up again. I'm still not really sure how I feel about their involvement (I'm still suspicious), but I guess they're probably the best people for this sort of task.

Okay, this last line really struck me.

"Truths may not only be exposed in the light. Sometimes, the truths in the shadows will have greater value."

As the main story has progressed, we have slowly edged closer and closer into darker territory -- the shadows, if you will.

I always come back to main story 6 when I think about this because that was our first ever episode without a trial at the end. That was also the first one where MC was directly involved in a near-death experience with the main villain and one where it was difficult to truly bring the truth "in the light" because everything was just so messy. It was difficult to salvage the pieces of main story 6 and bring it to justice, because there wasn't anyone left to bring to justice at that stage.

So it makes sense that MC and the NXX Investigation Team are probably going to go into even darker areas, not necessarily for justice, because that's not quite the point here, but for truth. When they play it safe, it's harder to get the full story. Only when they step into the shadows can they really unravel everything that is going on.

Right, okay. I'm... kind of confused by Jerome's mixed signals. We know he's not to be trusted (especially with the scene near the end where he's reaching out to Brigid), but he also seems to be... dropping hints?

Does he want MC to figure out the truth? Is he deliberately setting a trap for the NXX by baiting them with information, like some kind of setup or long con? Jerome is still very much a mystery to me, but if there is one thing I can be certain of, it's that he's been gradually appearing more and more throughout the main story. I don't doubt we're going to be seeing more of him as the mystery continues to unravel.

It's been a while since I've seen her sprite, but Matthew bears a very strong resemblance to Jill/Reina Richter (I think it's Reina now, right?). It's cool seeing the artist incorporate common details between biologically-related characters (e.g. Marius & Giann & Austin, Artem & Kimberly).

Ohh. The Richters are getting involved? Okay, so maybe Vyn does have more stakes in the situation than the missing NXX members.

Truth and Heroism

A mini segment about some themes I've been mulling over (in relation to ToT).

I feel like a lot of the VNs I've been thinking about lately have been talking about truth and apparently ToT main story 10 is no exception to that. I think it's important that in MC's pursuit of the truth, she does stop and remind herself that truth can be cruel in the moment. There may be even more horrifying things in store for her and the NXX Investigation Team. But even as they edge closer and closer to painful answers, they have to see everything through to the end. Even if it hurts. Even if things turn out to be worse than they ever imagined.

And then this last bit struck me because in a way, the NXX Investigation Team are heroes. They're a little glorified because MC is part of that team and also all the guys are love interests, but with MC, they've been helping to bring justice to Stellis or learn more about the greater plot.

But Brad Gries is different, because he's just some guy who doesn't even have a sprite, who thought that something had to be done in order to avoid a worse thing happening. And he's dead, and it wasn't a pretty way to go, and that's apparently case closed on main story 10 (final scene aside). There's something tragic about that. Maybe, in a way, Brad is somewhat of a microcosm of the people of Stellis. People who are fighters -- people who hope for things to happen or not happen, people who MC tries so hard to help and bring justice to. People who aren't always saved. People who don't get to see justice in their lifetime.

Do you enjoy writing? Do you have any personal tips?

i do enjoy writing! i love writing poems, songs, and stories!! :D

i wouldn't say i'm the best writer, but i do have some tips:

for poems and songs: this is all about evoking some kind of feeling using words! it should probably go without saying, but before you write a poem or a song you should know what the meaning behind it is. while some good poems and songs are just beautiful nothingness, the best ones tend to clearly have a meaning, even if the meaning itself isn't obvious. skillful word choice is imperative in making your piece not only sound good but also be meaningful; wordplay, metaphors, and imagery go a long way; you can take artistic liberties, of course, but generally speaking good poems and songs comprise of actual sentences and not just pretty words thrown together.

for songs, one must also think about the melody. as i don't really understand music, haha, i can't imagine what a note sounds like, so i can't write songs without my ukulele nearby to try out chords. make sure to record lots and lots of demos! the worst thing is when you come up with a great song but you forget the tune because you never recorded it... when it comes to writing chord progressions feel free to take inspiration from songs you like! of course, don't straight up steal a whole tune, but if you find some chords you like you can play around with them. this is also helpful in getting a chord progression and melody that matches the tone of your song.

for stories: my biggest tip is planning as much as you can out before you write everything! sometimes it's fun to just make things up as you go, but there's a limit to how much you can do that if you want your story to be coherent. i've learned this from writing geometropolis: race to the 3rd dimension. to effectively write a story, you need to know a few main things: the setting, the main events, and the character developments. i think the most difficult part is pinning down when certain character developments occur within the timeline of main events - it takes some playing around, but once you do figure it out, it's very helpful and makes actually writing your story much, much simpler. if you're like me, you have probably envisioned a few major scenes and setpieces for your story and have specific character moments pinned to them, and at that point the thing to figure out is how things progress between those scenes.

planning if very important, but improvising parts of certain scenes can be good as well! some of my best ideas have come from knowing the general framework of an episode of my story, but letting my imagination fill in the gaps as i write it. it creates some very organic interactions between characters, which is always nice! another thing to consider is when to stick to your current story plan as opposed to changing it based on a new idea - sure, in theory you might infinitely come up with better ideas for your story, but if you never pick one and roll with it, your story will never get written. with this in mind, planning is even more helpful, as in a way it helps you stay loyal to the idea you elaborated on so much, haha!

8. Which tf character has the most different personality from you? Uhhhhh that’s a good question. Maybe RiD’15 Drift? He’s very rigid and not likely to have fun for the sake of having fun. Also most iterations of Shockwave are far more logical than I like to be. Sure, logic is important, but Shockwave seems to go overboard in my book. 10. Which tf character do you think you’d get along with really badly? Probably Starscream, any continuity. He's such a backstabber and I value loyalty; he's super narcissistic and people like that are quite annoying to me. Plus he's generally not very fond of humans and talks down to them, and I'm very feisty so our interactions would probably go much like Miko's and his in TFP. Many insults, mutual disgust. I can appreciate his character in a show but I know I could not stand him in real life haha. 12. List a piece of art not from transformers that you think fits a tf character! Hmm this took me a bit of digging...there wasn't one that came to mind instantly, but it was interesting to consider! Reposting is BAD kids(TM) so here's direct links to artists’ works instead! ;)

First off: this beautiful ocean art by Kazami is really inspiring to me. Most people probably don’t think of the ocean when they think Transformers, but...put simply, it reminds me of the ’Waves ;) I have AU versions of Shockwave and Soundwave occupying my mind, their designs inspired by the sea. And the depth in this particular piece is absolutely gorgeous. The brighter colors are reminiscent of neon, which also makes me think Wavebros, and the darker colors add to the ominous, frightening feel of the deep ocean, ever fitting for those two Decepticons.  Oh! You’d probably like this as well! There’s a Fire Emblem character whose design I am absolutely in love with. He’s so spooky!!! His name is Líf and I haven’t reached his chapter in the story yet, but I’m so looking forward to that day because his design alone intrigues me. 💜 What does this have to do with Transformers? Well, he reminds me of Soundwave the most, but his “lightning antennae,” lol, remind me of both Soundwave and Optimus, which is a very interesting combination. Líf’s design gets me thinking about the uncanny ways Soundwave and Optimus are similar, something I hadn’t really considered in depth before. It’s quite fun. I was hoping someone would 😊 This would have to be, hands down, "Did You Forget Who I Am" from The Last Knight. The Bayverse is full of terrible, terrible elements, but Steve Jablonsky’s score is not one of those. All the soundtracks are incredible. And this scene from TLK is so iconic that, every time I listen to the music, I can hear Optimus' voice fill in that beat of silence with the mighty, chilling line that Peter Cullen delivered so well. 💙 It also has a special place in my heart because...I can’t help but see a connection to my faith :) This scene and therefore this song are good reminders for me when I’m having a bad day. Side note: The fact that this song surpassed the TFP theme to become my favorite Transformers piece of music really says a lot about its impact. 19. Which depiction of cybertron in a tf media do you most want to live in? Does the answer vary depending on if you’re human or cybertronian? Lol okay so gut reaction would say "G1 Cybertron" because 1) humans can apparently breathe up there without issue (and not be harmed by acid rain, so that's a huge plus), and 2) while the Autobots and Decepticons were bickering on earth I could just go hang out with Shockwave, who's all alone just chilling 😂 But if oxygen wasn't an issue? Definitely post-Predacons-Rising Cybertron. I would love to rebuild the planet along with Team Prime and listen to their stories as they began to heal emotionally from the long conflict. I would also love to see what elements of the planet they repaired true to the original design, and which elements they rebuilt completely to start off on a blank slate, and the implications of each decision. It would be cool to live in a revitalized Cybertron and watch refugees return and new sparks be forged gradually over time until the planet was bustling again. And if I could show up a bit earlier and be present for Bumblebee's Warrior knighting ceremony that would be pretty cool too. 💛

25. Have you ever upset yourself with your own writing?

You know how artists joke about making the same faces they're drawing? I do that with feelings when I'm writing intense scenes. So yes, I have cried while writing or made myself really angry, but it's because I was feeling the feelings and really into the scene.

But have I ever written anything I can't stand to look at because it's too "upsetting"? No. The more intense and complicated and messy something is, the more I reread it haha.

29. Share a bit from a fic you’ll never post OR from a scene that was cut from an already posted fic. (If you don’t have either, just share a random fic idea you have that you don’t plan on getting to.)

You get a bit from an epilogue of the singular black sails fic i started (From Eden), but lost steam on the last chapter. It's an au where Flint believes Thomas and Miranda are dead, and they think the same of him, and then a decade later they all run into each other in Nassau.

“You came all this way just to have dinner?” Flint asks.

“Thought I might properly meet with the Barlow’s as well,” Silver says, “learn their secrets to taming you.”

Flint’s eyes narrow, and there’s a sneer at the corners of his mouth. Silver knows his mind well enough to know what he’s thinking. No one can tame him. 

“Besides,” Silver says, “I’m a married man now. I can’t go to the usual places men whore away their responsibilities, so I’ll settle for the next best thing.” 

Flint disapproves of the joke, “I’m not your fucking--”

The door opens and Miranda Barlow leans out, “Mr. Silver, are you joining us for dinner?” 

“I would be delighted,” Silver purrs. 

He can see it in her eyes, the thoughts racing and cataloguing him, much the way Flint does. Peas in a pod, those two. The thought terrifies him. 

“Good,” Miranda says, “I understand you used to be a cook?” 

“A very poor one,” he admits. Flint laughs at the understatement. 

“That’s not important,” she says, “my husband has convinced himself that he should like to cook. I need you, as an experienced chef, to dissuade him from such notions.” 

There’s a noise of protest from inside. 

Silver glances to Flint, wondering if he’s being set up for some kind of joke. 

“If we are friends, then you will help save me from that disaster,” Flint says gravely. 

Silver pushes himself to his feet. Flint and Miranda, respectfully, wait for him to stand without offering assistance.

"Now… I do wonder why you require my help," Silver says, and turns from Miranda, to Flint, and back to the lady, "surely Captain Flint could talk a man down from this kind of conquest?"

Miranda's eyes hold his gaze, and flicker over to Flint. Silver and Flint are friends, but can he be privy to the inner workings of whatever it is they are doing here? 

"Unfortunately Thomas is one of the few men in the world who can persuade me to forget my intentions," Flint says, and Silver has heard this light laugh on the edge of his voice so few times that he actually has to turn to be sure that it's still Flint leaning against the porch rails. He's still there: shirt untucked, feet bare, hair curling on his brow. And smiling. He looks ten years younger in this instant. Almost a complete stranger. A happy, civilized man.

"My god," Silver accidentally says out loud.

Flint scowls at him, curious.

"I simply must learn your secrets," Silver confesses to Miranda, "you will be seeing much more of me, I can promise you that."

"Is that a threat?" Miranda counters, and Silver laughs.

You sure are a very busy person, I understand that. Nevertheless, I'm positive that there's someone out there who will give you all the love and support you deserve. Also, you'd be a very loving and considerate boyfriend, I'm sure of that. And what would a good relationship be without some light teasing? I might have read quite a few stories about you, to be honest. A lot of them are very well written. Being a Hero sure has it rough days but there are some days that nothing happens which is good and the days we like the most, like today it! No big incidents just a few small local things, like someone needing directions, or help picking up some items that spilled from their bag that tore, just normal everyday life. hey I'm sorry if this reply is coming in late. I've been busy with traveling and work stuff the past couple weeks, that I haven't had any time for myself. i hope you've been well.

sorry to hear that you didn't like cults live! some artists are just great at production and not as performers. I remember having a friend so disappointed of how joji performed live. He kept yelling and asking the city how they were doing every minute. It was amusing lol. performing is just a whole other skill. honestly, there's artists that sound 1000x better live than the studio versions.

i'm learning korean, but i haven't had time to keep up with grammar, im just maintaining vocabulary so i dont forget. there's a lot to talk about when it comes to theory, but to boil it down, especially at the level you're at if you already can speak/listen, you should always be constantly giving yourself a lot of input (reading, listening, etc.) and never stop observing. Once you stop observing, and settle at your level/fluency, you will never grow. So if you don't stop observing/noticing stuff, like phrases, pronunciations, slang, you'll continue to grow. But yeah a lot of input is important. You should always read/listen to your stuff at your level + 1. Read/listen to stuff that you can understand ~96% of. You learn best when you can attach new words to a memory/emotional connection/image. You won't remember the word "obstruction" in a dictionary, but when you figure out the word "obstruction" when used in a movie, TV show, or song, you'll remember it better because of context.

Yeah i think what you're saying is very true. i think life in general is a whole mass of grey. i just wish artistically, my interests and passions will come together and align to something i can be proud of, but i'm just littered with unfinished projects. maybe in my mind during the time, i thought if i just had more focus and precision, i'd get things done.

hmm i think it's definitely an exciting position at a clean slate, but i don't see my slate as clean haha. i already fucked around a lot and have experience walking the roads im interested in. it feels more depressing when you tried and don't know whether you want to try again or fuck around with other shit. i hate saying this, but time is limited, and at a certain point, sometimes you feel like it's too late to hop on another path, but i guess that's just a sunk cost fallacy lol.

at the end of the day, i always think you should do what's fun. For me, it's always rotating -- if i stay too long on one thing, it gets too saturated for me fast. i've always seen that as a bane then a boon, it shows i can't stay consistent and i don't have perseverance.

and you're right. i think to see growth, you need change, otherwise you plateau. i definitely see growth and change in myself. my past self wouldn't believe how mellow i've become. a large part of me now just wants to simplify, minimize, and live a stable quiet life. and i think to do that, i want to let go of a lot of the things i was interested in. i think im just at a phase in my life where i want to move past experimenting and fucking around, and settle on something. i should be having fun with the process. when i think deep about it, it's not that im frustrated not knowing the answer, but that i really have a deep appreciation for art and expression, that it's hard to "choose" a medium to stick with. with all the ways you can express yourself through movies, books, clothes, music, painting, dancing, designing, cooking, and so much more along with the sub-genres behind it, it's hard to say "hey i want to do this for life". but i realize i don't really have to choose. it'll come naturally. i can just ride the river, and see where it leads me. you can also argue you don't have to do it for life, you can do anything you want, it's really your choice and that's the beauty of it. and i argue that my choice is to stick with 1 (or a few). i kind of see it like the difference between a buffet and a specialized restaurant. sure you get variety in a buffet, but you can't match the quality and 1:1 personal experience of a specialized restaurant.

That language advice makes a lot of sense. It's why immersion is so great for learning quickly. That plus your need to survive lol. Why are you learning korean?

What exactly is stopping you from being proud now, even with unfinished projects? For me, it's comparison that makes my imposter syndrome worse. But other people have different circumstances, it would be really unfair to me if I didn't take that into account. I feel you on the focus thing too. I was diagnosed with ADHD and things started to make sense. Now I try to work with it rather than against it

I hear you, I think if you are called to pivot, do it. It is never too late to reinvent yourself. I am also brutally aware of how little time we have. It's like everything everywhere all at once. You can pick the timeline you want to live. It really is never too late.

I think it's ok to hop from one thing to the next. There are a lot of multi-passionate people who are restless with life. I see that as an asset, but I know it doesn't always feel like it. Regardless, this is good to think about. What do you think would happen if you did persevere? Are you avoiding something? Is there a part of you that wants to keep things incomplete? A part that secretly likes it?

I say this because I feel this way about my success. I know I can make it big, but a part of me is afraid of my own success. I would have that much more to lose. But to not go for it, well wouldn't I have already lost?

I also tooootally understand your struggle with finding your specialty. I am on that boat right now too. I've even used the same restaurant analogy too lol. This capitalistic society pressures us to pick one but we are so much more dimensional. Having too much to pick from is a good problem, but still all the more frustrating. I think riding the way is the best thing to do too. Why do I have to decide now? Can't I just let my heart show and guide me? I know you also want stability, but why throw away your interests? I don't think they are necessarily mutually exclusive. I think we can have our cake and eat it too.

Again, I think it's an asset. And I think you can get really good at more than one medium too. Lately I decided I want one of my main mediums to be metal working. But also machine knitting, jewelry, and print making. Also book making, and maybe also paper making. In the future, I wanna do glasswork and ceramics too. I want to do it all!

I've been thinking about what jobs I could apply for with my lack of specialty, but I realized my specialty is my intersection of passions and my niche is me. I could be a good leader, creative director, manager (something big picture) if I am familiar with all the moving parts. This is just what we interdisciplinary artists do!

PS. Obviously I'm not an expert, but some of the things you're describing sound like adhd behaviors. Could be worth looking into :P

also if u don't mind would you wanna talk a little bit about how you got into that style for Lucky Jack, or maybe how you learned to use the style? I kinda wandered through your tags and a lot of the art you have for that character/story is really fun.

So! The big ones to look at would be Fleischer studios and old Disney, where the style originated from (approximately 1930s).

Out of recent examples though, the best one to look at is probably Cuphead!

The bosses all have a nice variety of shapes and motifs- just to show that there's more than just the "Main Character Default Shape"

Another nice example of "modern" rubberhose is the mickey mouse shorts! You can find those on youtube.

Theres a guy on twitter who makes really neat rubberhose loop animations but i cannot for the life of me recall his url.

Honorable mention to Felix Colgrave who has some rubberhose inspiration in his art and animation!! I wouldn't call it straight up rubberhose but its still really neat. (go check out DOUBLE KING on youtube! warning for blood and violence and. general weirdness)

Now, about Jack:

I made pretty much the moment I heard abt toonkind, ahah. I've always found rubberhose to be really charming.

Jack is quite a bit more streamlined towards my own style- he's often got more somewhat more defined elbows and knees in the bent position and a more slim body than classic rubberhose. (not to mention I keep forgetting to give him pie-cut eyes). He lacks some of the roundness/squishyness that old rubberhose has, i think?

When designing him, I didn't really do a whooooole lotta active research on rubberhose. It was more like I picked up bits and pieces from media I'd seen before for him.

I'm not sure how to describe "using" the style- I guess the best advice i can think of is to think of is as a collection of simple shapes? A sphere on top of a cylinder with a bunch of tubes stuck to it for limbs.

I do find that posing is just as important as design though.

For that, animation and storyboarding tips are also really helpful to look at. Squash and Stretch being the biggest one I can think of rn. Even if you don't plan to do a Straight Up Animation I think it's pretty helpful to know for drawing action.

You can all finally read/download Ed, Edd n Eddy's official Series Bible right here! Thanks again to Chuckletons for sharing this with me and to Joey/Kongiscool0518 for sharing it in the first place, the Holy Grail of lost Ed, Edd n Eddy trivia!

One of the first posts I made for this blog was the Series Bible page. It was a composite of every source we had ever seen reference the series bible so far-- storyboarders in interviews, CN's old character guides, and the biggest source, an old CN UK posting about the show. Well, I figure now that we have the official source, I better update the old page (so everyone knows it's out of date), and make this new Series Bible post using the official source! Not much new information, but I was intrigued to finally learn the true phrasings of some things we had only heard paraphrased, as well as at least one detail from the movie that I couldn't believe came up this early in conception...

Unfortunately, Tumblr has apparently updated its post system to only let me add 10 images? Gonna try and only use images for what I need since you can read the actual document above, I guess I'll transcribe it too for easier reference and so we don't ever lose some archive of this.

Quickly, let's review what a series bible is:

A series bible is how creators pitch shows to networks. They can be called “pitch bibles” as well. Bibles do not usually get posted publicly, because they are initially under a strict Non-Disclosure Agreement by the network; also the creator may simply not wish to share it because it reflects the earliest stages of development.

The pitch materials typically include early concepts for characters, locations and episodes. Sometimes it exposes secrets, in this case, Ed and Eddy’s home lives, and sometimes the stuff in it is completely abandoned because it’s so early in production, in this case, casual references to school and adults.

I love how Danny decided last second to pencil in the correct names over each Ed, since they're arranged out of title-order.

Fun fact: one storyboard artist for the movie observed that the movie is essentially all about challenging the series' original notion that the Eds are friends ONLY because of their name.

Ed, Edd n Eddy is a show about confusion and contradiction, that awkward part of youth, pimples, big feet, oily hair and... girls???.

Puberty is unforgiving.

I was fascinated by the lack of art on this page, it makes the pitch feel very focused. AKA logo in the corner, the title logo again up top, then the logline appears again below.

I really love the breakdown of Danny's vision of the show. "Gag-laden, beat-generated, CARTOON bumper ride." Very accurate, and I think "beat-generated" is the phrase that interests me the most. I typically think of "animation beats" as sort of a give-in-- technically all things fit a rhythm, so all stories are essentially just a montage of beats. But this does make me realize how important the strength of the beats and their rhythm are to the pacing of a cartoon and making you feel like "that was a good one." I feel like the "seasonal rot" viewers feel over the course of a show, and the way that perception differs from person to person, depends on the type of beats you want. Even though I am very into the experimental beats of a show in its later seasons, I can definitely see how season 1's beats are more typically appealing to a wide-audience, and how important a focus on that is to the longevity of a show.

I found it really interesting how the scams are initially conceived of here as "summer jobs." It adds to the sense that adults were originally meant to be present. Honestly a little surprised nobody with access to this bible had ever thought to mention that-- scams are not referenced ANYWHERE. Their image in the Series Bible is that they have summer jobs and help neighbors, which is certainly a much cleaner reputation than the Eds ended up with in the show. Makes me realize though, were some of the early scams, like Ed's Hive Bee Gone and their newspaper routes, supposed to be leaning into this early idea of them with almost legit jobs for unseen adults?

I was very amused by the repeated phrase that the Eds simply CAN'T fit in.

Loved to finally see the official phrasing for the confirmation that Peach Creek is in America. Not much different than I was led to believe, but still nice to have the true quote.

Also love Eddy being described as "stylish and flaunting himself to the world." The bold-print reactions to each micro-description is a cute idea too, I truly wonder who we were meant to picture saying those things in reaction. Each Ed? Kevin?

The "corner mail box" is an oddly specific phrase-- the Eds do hang around mailboxes throughout the series, especially seasons 1-3, and I believe the canon map does have a corner mailbox, but the idea that the Eds hang out at one specific mailbox went the way of Bro's supposed secret treehouses.

PAGE 2:

Ed, Edd n Eddy

Show Description

Gag laden. True cartoon style, inventive, non parody, fast paced, stretch and squash

Beat driven. (even when characters stop they hold with a bounce cycle. Adults never bounce. Music can play important part, not just fill.) But not a musical.

Cartoon surrealism. (viewers see the show as Ed, Edd n Eddy would, less important things tend to blend into the background, while objects of Ed, Edd n Eddy's desires are focused. Premise driven.)

The school year's over, (yeah!!!!) and the long HOT summer vacation begins (gulp). What to do?

Stuck on a cul-de-sac in the suburbs of America is the last place you want to spend summer break, especially when you find life confusing and contradicting.

Ed, Edd n Eddy is about friendship, and serves to remind us that they're no "good ole days," just smelly runners.

You can tackle anything, when your with your pals.

Their days are spent, for knowledge, acceptance and some cash for jaw breakers. Armed with pimples, big feet and oily hair the three amigos trek into the unknown.

Ed, Edd n Eddy are dying to be grown-ups, but they're kids, and attack adulthood as only kids would. Simple situations turn into a manic rollercoaster ride. (Don't forget your barf bag).

They just want to belong, and they're willing to pull off any insane stunt to prove it. First they need to figure out what it is they want to belong to.

Found it interesting that on this page, the show's logo is replaced with the title written in a jumbled font. Seems like the font from the show's end credits.

Hehe, the continued reactions to the descriptions. Allow me to be Double D for a moment and point out the increased use of parentheticals on this page, as well as one wrong "your".

I love Danny's insight that season 1 is framed by the context of how hyped everyone still is just to be out of school, but also the sense of pressure to make use of their break.

I really appreciate Danny getting further into the details of his summary of the show's style on the previous page. It only makes sense that he had this much of a vision that early.

A second confirmation of the cul-de-sac being in America! I'm also really into the repeated focus on the Eds finding the world "contradicting." I always loved how EEnE's inexplicable cartoon antics supported that sense that the Eds are highly aware of contradictions in both societal things and the actual characters.

WOW, so I'm fascinated by this dual reveal. Before the wiggling outlines, which Danny usually calls a "boiling line" and describes as a tribute to wiggling inking in early animation, the series bible instead refers to him wanting the characters to do the iconic Fleischer "bounce," which is a much more commonly recognized rubberhose animation technique. Very interesting that Danny decided not to stick to that. Did it feel too out of place? Or was the overseas team not willing to animate a weight-shifting for every single held pose? Haha, guess I can see why boiling was an easier compromise. I wonder if he had any other ideas for how to make it more of a 1930s cartoon.

The other reveal to me here is that the movie's choice, that adults don't always wiggle in the show, was an idea from the very beginning! I guess I can better understand now why it's just too difficult to communicate a stylistic choice like that overseas-- no point making Bro not wiggle, that'd just create confusion.

Also, really disappointed that my wish for a musical is officially squashed in the series bible itself. That's a tragedy. The show's over, ya couldn't let me dream, Danny!? Conversely, I love Danny's forethought to say "non parody," I definitely noticed and appreciated EEnE's avoidance of derivative parody humor.

My spouse had to point out to me that Danny probably means sneakers here, lol. Canadianisms!

The comments about the Eds wanting to grow up but needing to figure out what they want to belong to are so great and relate to the movie so well. I've heard those comments before, but the correct phrasing was cool to see.

Very cute bit wasting the space at the top of the page. Danny seems very invested in Ed's personality already. The old sources we used to have definitely tried to condense these down to simpler blurbs.

Weird how Danny wants to essentially diagnose Ed with ADHD here (phrasing it very poorly, but it was the 90s and... Canada?). I don't know enough on the subject to debate it, but I still gotta point out Ed's canonical cracked skull!

Interested in the comment about Ed being most allergic to Guinea Pigs. I don't think that animal was ever even mentioned in the show. Eddy mentioned an old gerbil once....

Neat to finally have the real phrasing of the official word on Ed's parents! I saw someone comment earlier that this seems to be hinting Ed's Dad is selling stolen cars. I've never thought to question the legality of his apparent second-hand-car dealership (I imagined he works with Eddy's dad, who has received a legitimate award for his salesmanship), but those quotation marks are certainly making Mr. Ed's practices questionable! Best case scenario, Danny meant that more like italics or something, but maybe Ed's dad IS up to no good...

Edd

is really smart.

Edd is unnaturally-- polite.

Edd hasn't been allowed to take gym ever since the Dodge ball incident. He's been excused to free study time in the library.

Edd doesn't like it when people touch his things.

EDD: "You may enter in my room, but don't touch my Lego robot. Thank you."

Edd's learning to play Peddle steel guitar. (his Mom makes him)

Edd's prone to "crushes". Girls in School, in his neighborhood, TV, anatomy books. He mails "true loves" his socks.

Edd is always ready for action, even though he can calculate the implications.

Edd constantly mumbles.

No one ever sees Edd's parents. They both work nights. They communicate to their son solely through Post-it notes. Edd's not allowed to touch anything in the house while they're gone. Anything.

Interesting how Danny slightly differentiates the barely-used space at the top here from Ed's description, to characterize Edd as more quiet and mumbly, adding an awkward "--" mid-sentence, perhaps to create the impression that Edd halts to choose words carefully.

Everything on this page feels familiar, from the character guides and other old sources. The most interesting thing to me here is that Edd's Mom forcing him to practice Pedal Steel Guitar is established this early, don't think I knew that, but I had noticed that it existed in his room from ep 1.

I love how the explanation in the beginning for why Edd goes along with their dumb schemes even though he's smart is basically just "he's always ready for action." ?!? I guess in a way???

That weirdly phrased Edd quote amuses me because it references Lego, just like the original concept background for his room before somebody nixed the copyright-namedrop.

Edd's prone to crushes thing has been reaffirmed over and over in character bios even though it really doesn't come up outside of the cupid magic in HPH and the pilot-episode heart eyes at Sarah that are barely canon. Still, I've always loved the truly disturbing statement that he mails "his true loves his socks" and how that managed to make it into canon with a comic book example, a cel animation example and a digital era example.

Eddy

Exhibitionist.

Megalomaniac. (quote from his report card)

Eddy is the unofficial leader of the trio.

He's always got a plan, a stunt or a weird noise.

Eddy's the "class clown". He loves showing off. He loves being the centre of attention-- no matter how stupid the reason is.

Eddy is the only kid in his grade to have been expelled for aw hole week from school. It was his turn to set up the video for science class. He switched "Our Friend Yeast", for a video he "borrowed" from his parent's room.

Before Eddy's brother went....away, he enlightened Eddy with the "legends" of the neighbourhood. Eddy knows where all the abandoned tree houses are, which sewer pipers are safe to spelunk, and the secret recipe for the "El Mongo Stink Bomb" (it's been in the family for years).

He is the one who is most able to pretend that he knows it all... and doesn't care what anyone else thinks about him.

His genes are working the fastest.

Eddy's Dad is constantly concerned that Eddy may grow up to be a ...figure skater.

Eddy's Mom never believes his little darling was involved in such a heinous act.

Funny choice that Eddy's wasted-top-space is just two one-word descriptions, and allegedly lazily swiped from his negative report card.

Wow, we knew the report card quote and the "Our Friend Yeast" story from the UK show guide, but now we also know Ed's page says that Ed draws in class, and now I realize that Ed and Eddy have series bible school blurbs to match Edd's classic dodgeball incident blurb. Anyway, it's great that Eddy's showed his entire school some sort of sex video his parents have.

Very interested that the phrasing for the Bro/El Mongo Stink Bomb blurb even seems to suggest it's a family recipe. Eddy's Dad did have prankster stuff in his closet in JJJ... did Bro learn his prankster ways from Dad?? The neighborhood's secret tree houses have come up in other descriptions (at best, I'd say this could be related to that creepy shack the Eds found in the woods), but I think it's new info that Eddy personally learned the sewer routes from Bro. Interesting...

Thankfully, I had already heard about the Bible's awkward reference to Eddy being the most pubescent as "his genes are working the fastest," lmao.

Once again the Double D in me comes out to point out that the description of Eddy's Mom seems to switch to the Dad's pronouns.

He is accident prone, when ever we see him he has a different affliction, ie: band-aids, patches, casts, lumps...etc.

He is very clean.

The Ed's frighten him, "They're such brutes".

I'm surprised how much of the UK guide was accurate to what was really in the bible for them! Also surprised Danny misspelled "whiney" and "tantrum," one right after the other. Is this how Sarah spells them? ...Sorry, Danny, I yam what I yam.

First generation of a landed immigrant family.

Nationality not important.

He's proud of his heritage.

He has peculiar traditions and/or customs.

He eats "weird" things.

He has hair on his back..... "yuck".

He confuses the Ed's to no end.

He confuses the other kids to no end.

JONNY 2x4

He is a wanderer and very inquisitive

From early morning to supper time, he is always outside playing, with his buddy, "Plank".

"Plank" is a wooden board that Jonny drew a face on with a crayon.

Jonny has wonderful conversations with Plank. ...Plank is a piece of wood.

Jonny makes himself very "accessible" to the Ed's.

Found it interesting that Rolf's bio is less clearly phrased than the UK bio set it up to be-- there they made it sound more like he mixes up who the Eds/kids are, here it's unclear whether it means that or (more likely) just means the obvious statement that everyone finds him confusing. If it's that, what a lame hollow bio Rolf got. This kid's based on you Danny, show some of that personal side!

Always loved Jonny's description, his life sounds so cute. Playing outside literally all day. Interesting to have it confirmed that Jonny drew Plank's face, I preferred to think the Eds drew him and sold him to Jonny, but whatever.

"Accessible" has always been an important vague description of Jonny to me. It really only applies to how chummy they could be with him in season 1, but it still sorta applies to his personality throughout the series as well.

NAZZ

She's cool, calm and assertive.

She is the most matured of the kids, or so she thinks.

She's into make-up and fashion magazines and Boys.

Sarah thinks she's awesome, wants to be just like her when she grows up.

When she enters a scene, all activity stops... boys freeze, they sweat, their hearts beat faster and faster. They lose their ability to talk. When she leaves, they recover and conclude it was something They ate.

She thinks the Ed's are funny.

KEVIN

He is cynical and sarcastic.

He thinks he knows the "routine". That's because he watches "60 Minutes".

It got a big laugh out of me that Kevin's description is only 2 sentences long. Nazz even has a more detailed character description from inception than Kevin. Love this for them.

Who's the Eds' rival? Well, he's cynical, sarcastic and he watches 60 Minutes, doesn't that tell you enough!?

I love the "mature... or so she thinks" remark about Nazz, a grounded flaw for her to have, being a little overcommitted to being mature like Eddy. It also perhaps suggests naiveté that makes it a little more reasonable that they didn't notice they were dumbing her down at the end of the series, but I do think the movie version of her better reflects the Bible's concept.

PAGE 18:

The Other Neighborhood Kids

Lineup of May, Lee and Marie.

The Kanker Sisters

These gals are tough. They bother, bully, provoke and bewilder everyone.

They live in a motor home park on the other side of the Cul-de-sac. The other kids have never been there.

They are proud of their Tammy Faye Baker memorabilia.

Their project "Cooking with Ketchup" closed down their school for a whole week.

No one likes them, especially the Eds.

They are determined to marry the Eds. They want them to do their dishes.

Amused that the Kankers are essentially being labeled backgrounds characters here, the role they mostly fell into in season 5. "Other" neighborhood kids...

I love that the Kankers have a school blurb to match each of the Eds', and that theirs has similar destructive-intentions to Eddy's video premiere story.

I believe all of this was all known from the UK guide as well, but still, neat stuff!

PAGES 19 & 20 (zoomed in Kanker lineup and their height chart with the Eds)

PAGES 21 & 22 (early promo art that used to be on CN's old Eds webpage, the art of the Eds eating jawbreakers at the end of ep 1 with the overhead text "Ed, Edd n Eddy love JAWBREAKERS!!!", and the art of the Eds all running with overhead text "Ed, Edd n Eddy see something shiny...."Jiggers." That weird "jiggers" statement at the end was normally edited out and I don't know what it means. Looked it up and it seems to be Chinook jargon (like when Ed said he was "skookum at X's and O's") usually said in the same sense as "CHEESE IT!")

PAGES 23+:

The rest of the pages in that bible download are from a 2004 storyboard test. The storyboard sample "It's Raining Eds," which we've seen some submitted samples of before, interpretations with Ed attempting to fly or chew gum and Edd making radioactive gum, I was surprised to find out the outline is just the original outline for the opening sequence to season 3's 'For Your Eds Only', seemingly Jonny was not written into the original outline (or was excised for easier testing purposes) but Kevin's brief cameo was. Now I wonder if they knew this would be used for a test when they wrote it, and if they would've come up with a less random way to include him if weren't forced to be a concise bit for testing's sake. (Your limit is typically 40 storyboard pages in my experience.)

I also noticed that in the included background references, the anonymous adult neighbor house next door to Ed's is officially just referred to as a "generic house."

So i was one of your followers/fans and i really liked your work, you were funny and you were entertaining in every way..you might still be (i dunno tho') i even liked your taste in music and i thought it matches mine in a weird way.. i, like any other fan thought highly of you and did anything to be noticed by you 😂 which sounds silly now that i say it.. but it's something that we all do and i'm sure you have done this yourself 😉.

I tried my best to cut you some slack bcs you are famous and i don't know your circumstances or anything about you... but at some point you had me and gave me some of your time and i thought to myself .. Group Introductions

hey guys, for those of you who have noticed, our posts frequently switch from we-us-our to I-me-my and etc. This is because we are a group of friends on one account and some (yes lina, i'm talking about you, when you see this. you're an idiot and I humbly request that you use your brain) of us are idiots who forget that seven other people have the password to this account. In the beginning, this account was only controlled by me, Em. (I honestly don't know how everyone else got the password) There are eight of us but we go by our nicknames. (I guess we're the admin? Because there's actually twenty-two of us who work on these fics but we're all still in school, and we don't want our gpa's to suffer any more than they usually do, haha) (this is actually a school club that more than thirty people attend) Anyway, we'll try to tag ourselves using this format: Admin:[nickname] down in the tags or somewhere in the post. (Also, our username [a-slytherinish-gryffindor] was meant to be mine only but now its this mess and I dont know how to feel about it) We also try to write a/n's but we always don't know what to say, sorry.

Kalee (the taskmaster and beta reader) (shes tiny but scary and also a good reader and very criticizing about our writing)

Mat (our music person and somehow second in command??) (I hate him. he's always criticizing and condescending and infuriating but has good taste in music and adds another pov to our writing so he's good for something I guess) (he was also almost-unanimously voted in. i swear on my chocolate stash that they're up to something and I dont like it)

Niel (actually a very nice person and our other beta reader) (I have no complaints about him other than please stop sneaking up behind me. i will accidentally punch you in the face one day and then I will laugh at you and walk away)

Than (actually i don't know what he does here other than provide snarky comments at us) (look dude, if you hate it then do it yourself, also where did you come from, and since when are you an admin???)
