Hi hi! I love how in depth and detailed you are when making/creating characters, or even when talking about other characters.

but I was curious, I wanted to be more inclusive/have more representation of PoC with my art works. But I do not know where to begin, or how to properly do research especially with how to research history and find accurate articles or so on.

Which I was curious on if you have any tips or pointers on how to do this/do my homework correctly?

How to Learn Any Topic RIGHT NOW- (kinda)

[A slightly LONG length post where I talk about my biggest resource and my number one tactic for sounding like you know your shit in an hour or less. Plus a list of educational Youtubers]

In High School, I mastered an art. The Art of 'Skyrim Speech 100'. The way to sound like you know what you're talking about, and form a pretty solid foundation of information in one sitting.

I am DEADASS CONVINCED that I have it boiled down to a very specific scientific formula. I got this I okay. I gotchu I swear I'm bout to have you like this im so deadass -

For me personally, the best resource is YouTube. One Website - Three Videos. And you're GOOD.

I have ADHD so - huge attention issues, so videos are a go to for me.

But I also really appreciate seeing the person explaining things to me. Finding good websites can be HARD, especially nowadays where a lot of websites might not even be written by humans, just clobbered together by AI.

For me, YouTube lets me see the person behind the channel, and it's a lot easier for me to vet the information if it's coming from one person who is open about their identity/certifications.

If their whole channel is dedicated to one thing, you can usually tell when they're very dedicated/educated on a topic, and I feel a lot more comfortable listening to them. Rather than reading random websites with writers I don't know/can't see.

Longform Youtube can be SO GOOD.

I'm gonna list some at the bottom - but you can find channels on everything. From architecture, to historical dress, to subway systems, entire cultures, etc.

In recent years Youtube has made a big push for longform content - so I recommend checking out videos that are 15 minutes OR MORE.

Not only is that enough time to go in depth, but because it's a video - the information is fed to you in a linear fashion. It's a lot more conversational and visual than reading a website.

If you hear something and need to remember, you can always go back. It can be hard to go back to a webpage and find the exact line, but videos are a bit easier.

Tips:

Try for find Youtubers that focus on ONE topic - or creators who go in depth about a wide array of interesting things (like Tom Scott or Anthony Padilla). Look for Doctors and Professors - A lot of educational professionals have youtube channels now. And they'll usually be upfront about it, searching things like 'History Professor explains X' or 'Doctor explains Y'. TEDTalks are good for this too. Look for people who are, or have the thing you're representing - If you're writing for a disability, it's always good to watch a video about the day in the life of someone with it - mental illnesses too. And there are a lot of great youtubers that easily break down things like cultural practices - or the issues they face because of their identity. Look for news channels. Watch current events. Vice, BBC, Channel 4, and have a lot of good current news, and they're posting videos every day. These videos show real life conditions while explaining it all, and they're really helpful for knowing about current political/cultural topics. DOCUMENTARIES!!!! - There is a documentary on anything. You can quote them in academics, and unlike movies, people post them on YouTube ALL the time, and people make them all the time. If you need to know about something, DOCUMENTARY.

I love using videos for everything, and below is how I use them:

I have a method that usually helps me sound like I'm super knowledgeable - By casting a very wide and very specific net over any topic. By narrowing any topic down to three parts, you can learn about 40% of a topic, but sound like you know 80%.

How to Teach Yourself Any Topic (in an hour and some change)

Three step method.

Watch three longform videos (15+ mins) about the topic. Each video about something slightly different.

The first video is about The History. This teaches us about the background of the topic. The second video is about The Expert Opinion. This teaches us about the reality of the topic. The third video is about a Random Topic inside of the main topic. This is to make us sound smart (in school)/add details or inspiration (while making characters).

Watch a fifteen minute video about each of these things, and in less than an hour, you'll have a pretty solid foundation of what it is, where it came from, and random (but surprisingly useful) details.

And when I say random I MEAN RANDOM. Can be anything - the niche, the better.

I'll give an example below with real search results and videos.

[I also give tips on how to search by topic (culture, religion, time period, etc) - as well as a list of educational BUT FUN Youtubers]

Example: I wanna make a Victorian Era Spider-woman.

The History Video - I watch a video about the general era, or what it was like being a woman in that time. I searched: Women in Victorian Era I found a real video titled: The Daily Life of a Victorian Lady

The Expert Opinion - I wanted to design her outfit accurately, so I looked for a Dress Historian's opinion on 1880's outfits I searched: Victorian Era Fashion I found a real channel: Bernadetta Banner (a channel all about recreating historical dresses - by a Broadway costume designer.)

The Random Topic - I don't know much about the Victorian Era..but I know theres two topics people always relate to the era - Sherlock Holmes and Jack the Ripper. I chose Sherlock. Sooooo, I watched a video about whether BBC sherlock was better than Downy Sherlock. Why? Because in 15 minutes it tells me about the show, the movie, AND the book - ALSO while teaching about the time period. I searched: BBC Sherlock vs Book I found a real video titled: Sherlock vs Sherlock - Which Iteration is Superior.

So after three 15-20 minute videos I know the history, the facts, and some random niche details of a topic.

Do I know everything about it? Not at all! But doing that, usually you can probably get through a conversation without freaking out too much.

By doing all that - I now know enough about the Victorian Era. From those videos I can accurately write an average Victorian woman, design her outfit accurate to the era, and also infuse some Victorian literature influence into her story.

All in an hour.

It works for other people character's too. Watching a video on the 70's, a video on the Punk Movement, and then a video of lets say a video about the band Ramones

Methods:

Some ideas for different topics:

If you want to show a character from a different time period -

If you're trying to write a character like Hobie, first watch a video about the history of the period - to understand when they were living. Then watch a video on their style/subculture - like the Punk movement. Then pick a specific band/media from the era and watch a video on it.

Sidebar: This is actually how I made Diane! I have little to no idea about the 70's outside of Punk. So searched up the history of 70's Disco, a video by Glamour about 1970's fashion, and I only knew one or two Disco singers (Donna Summer & Diana Ross) - so I chose Diana Ross. Diana is the direct inspiration for Diane's name and big hair. I never reference Diana, but it helps Diane fit the Disco theme, by emulating one of THE disco queens.

If you want to show a character from a different country -

Like India for example, a good place to start is watching a video about the history of India, then watching a vlog from someone in India (in the area you're thinking of), then watch a video about Indian fashion, or indian street food, or indian family traditions - so you can sprinkle those details into the story or conversation. Then you can build from there. Big tip: If they're from the city watch a video about the city's transit/subway system if they have one. It's a VERY fast way to learn the city, and make it sound like they actually live there, even if you're just name dropping stations and town squares.

If you want to show a character with a mental illness, disability or condition -

Start off by searching the background of the condition. Have a doctor break down what it is, how it effects the body, the mind, or both. Then watch a video of an average person with the condition, and their experience day to day. Then try and find a specific advocate, celebrity, or influence who goes into depth about it and how they empower themselves.

If you want to show someone from a different religion -

Watch a video about the beliefs of the religion, then the history of the religion, then a video of someone who practices the religion.

ETC-

Now disclaimer, this won't make you actually know everything about the topic - but at the very least, you'll probably be using the terms and words right. And you might be able to think up your own thought from there.

I used this ALL THROUGH High School.

If I know next class is about Marie Antoinette - yeah sure lemme go run and learn about her life history, her fashion taste, and the architecture of the Palace of Versailles in an hour.

Now I can talk about her childhood, personality, and where she lived.

The Great Gatsby? Never read it and I never will. The movie? NEVER SEEN IT. I searched up the history/inspiration of the author, watched a video on the book's plot and symbolism, then watched a video on the book vs the movie.

From there I kinda understood what the book was about, why the author might have written it, the symbolic ho-ha, and the extra details as if I watched the movie too.

And from there I could formulate whether I think the symbolism matters to our modern day society and why the director changed small details from the book, and etc, etc.

It was enough for me to bullshit and say words and usually people are like 'yeah you seem to be making sense' lol

HELL throw in ANOTHER video about the lives of women in the 1920's and I could probably bullshit an argument on how the Great Gatsby reflects gender roles in the Flapper Era. Like gun to my head I could probably come up with something im so deadass

HEY IM NOT SAYING SLACK OFF IN SCHOOL OKAY - DO NOT THIS IS JUST MY TESTIMONIAL - USE THIS TO LEARN TOPICS NOT BOOKS ITS A GREAT TOOL

Also disclaimer: use this for good don't be walking around like you Know Know Shit cause someone might check you and then i cant help you this is just a way to understand the basis of topics and be able to form thoughts and hold conversations about them or use them in your art and writing.

Plus it's a great way to gather strong resources for your art and writing.

It's a lot easier to show characters in a natural accurate way when you've curated a very rounded understanding of the topic or era - not just in an educational historical sense.

For the purposes of character creation, essays, sounding like you know anything in conversations - this does help. And you do start absorbing stuff. It's just about breaking the topic down, and learning about it in blocks.

If you understand the history, you can understand the now, and if you understand the now, you can understand the nuance. Like that.

RMTransit - Videos about subway systems, buses, and public transit across the world. VERY quick way to realistically learn about a city

Anthony Padilla - Has lots of 'I Spent a Day With-' videos, where he sits down with people. Has videos ranging on things from Dipolar Disorder and ADHD to things like Asexuality and Ex-Mormons. Good for getting multiple honest experiences of people.

ReligionForBreakfast - Simple approachable videos about religions, their histories and beliefs. Made by a doctor of Religious Studies

Cognito - VERY good historical, cultural, and geographical videos, all cutely animated

Tasting History with Max Miller - Historically accurate cooking videos with really cool stories and histories to match

Vice News - Very good, very vetted Left-leaning news source. Vice and Vice News are two different things. Vice News is really good for current events videos on things like conflicts in countries.

Johnny Haris - slightly longer explainer videos about countries, geography, history, and weird quirks

Vox - Short detailed explainers about....anything really.

Weird History - .....It's history that's weird

Absolute History - Longer Documentaries about History, mainly the 1900's

CrowsEyeProductions - Really good Historical Fashion videos of 1400-2000's

Morgon Donner - ANOTHER Historical Fashion channel (they're really interesting yall) that focuses more on Medieval era

J.J McCullough - REALLY good videos about culture in general, as well as geography videos full of full interesting facts (did you know Nepal is the only country with a flag not four sided?) He also has some spicy takes on Canadian and Quebec politics that are interesting to me as an American but ????

Here are my headcanons for the Bugsnax cast's academic qualifications!

I want to be extremely clear that I'm treating this as purely character history stuff, not some kind of measure of worth or intelligence. I know some people treat academic qualifications that way, but that's stupid and I hate it. This stuff is based more on opportunity and interest. And what would have to be true for the characters to be in the positions they're in in the game.

I'm using US definitions, and not going into vocational stuff, which is why I keep saying academic. Vocational is kind of its own tier of things that's hard to throw into a table with the academic stuff. Also, vocational qualifications in the US don't seem to be standardised, so it's hard to compare them to each other. Chandlo is totally a licensed carpenter, though.

Rambly elaborations! (How tired was I when I originally wrote these wow)

I swear Gramble's presence in the some high school section isn't about his comedy (?) Appalachian accent. It's because he didn't have parents, so he had to prioritise food and shelter over finishing his schoolwork. If he "wound up raising himself", like the instruction booklet says, he wouldn't have got a lot of support academically. Also, I headcanon that he has ADHD (among other characters), so throw that one on the pile too. But he will probably get a GED once he gets around to it. That stands for Grumpus Education Diploma.

Lizbert dropping out of high school (for a life of adventure) is from the Reddit AMA, and also I like it. She seems big into forging her own path. Also, if her comedy Australian accent is meant to imply that she's Grumpus Australian, it's way less stigmatised in Australia to not finish year 12 than it seems to be in the US. Not saying it's not stigmatised at all, but it seems like leaving school early isn't even treated as a viable option in the US? That's why I was so defensive about Gramble just now.

Wambus wanted to work at the family farm as a career, and was already getting training on that, so he didn't see the point of doing further education. Also, he's from a culture that doesn't really see college as the default path after high school. I think that's one of the things the instruction booklet was implying with the line about how he's "the type who's spent his whole life within a mile of where he was born."

Cromdo went to college to study business administration, but had to drop out due to various family emergencies, and could never afford to go back. That seems like about his luck. I blame Grumpus Reagan (I hope there's no Grumpus Reagan).

Speaking of college being the default after high school, Filbo went to college because that's what you do, but couldn't keep up, and dropped out and returned home within a year. I hope he at least went to some good parties in that time. …Wait, isn't he childhood friends with Lizbert? Is he Grumpus Australian?

I'm not a hundred percent sure what a liberal arts degree is, but I bet Beffica has one. Maybe she majored in photography. Or sociology. I'm going to say sociology.

I headcanon that Chandlo and Snorpy went to the same college for undergrad, and were roommates the whole time. Platonic roommates, because they were still in the "if only you could just date your best friend wouldn't that be simpler hahaha" stage. Chandlo's degree is in kinesiology, probably.

Clumby has a diploma in her office from the School of Journalism at New Grump City College, which you can see at the start of the game. But it doesn't mention what qualification she graduated with. It could be a Bachelor's or Master's, but the advanced degree section has a strict one Snakolyte limit, and Jamfoot was funnier. Actually, it seemed excessive to give an advanced degree to six out of sixteen characters.

Wiggle probably went to one of those performing arts high schools I keep hearing about. And then to one of those performing arts colleges. She had a hard time deciding between dance and music, but ended up settling on music because she thought she'd reach a bigger audience that way. You can't do fashion design at those types of schools, I don't think, or that would've come third.

You tend to need a degree in journalism before you can find work in it, so I think the Journalist probably got one. They did a year of art school first, but concluded that drawing was something they'd be happier doing as a hobby than for a living. So they switched to their other passion. That's my headcanon for why the quest art is so good, if they're supposed to be the one who drew it in-universe.

Jamfoot canonically has a degree in library science, but he doesn't say what kind. In the US, most degrees in library science are Master's, so he might not have needed to specify. And a Master's in Library Science is extremely a part-time barista qualification. Because it's hard to get a job in the actual field. As mentioned in his interview.

Eggabell has the most specific canon qualifications in the game. She has an MD, with a specialisation in endocrinology. Did you know that Doctor of Medicine is a graduate degree in the US, not a research degree? I didn't, until I was researching this chart a while back when I had insomnia. I was wondering why all these American doctors also had PhDs. I may not be the quickest on the uptake.

I went back and forth on whether Floofty would have a Master's or a PhD, but I think if they could refer to themself a doctor, they definitely would, as often as possible. Maybe they couldn't get into a program after all that slander they mentioned. Or they were in one but got kicked out. Or they're just still working on it. Anyway, I think they have a Master's in molecular biology.

Shelda has an advanced degree here partly because I think it would really annoy Floofty, but also, it seems like something she'd be interested in persuing. Like, a Master's in herbal science or something. I don't know if it would licence her to practice medicine, though, if she wanted to expand the range of herb-related stuff she had access to. Maybe a Doctor of Naturopathy instead? Naturopaths actually can be licensed as physicians in about half the US, and the stuff Shelda talks about is so broad that it wasn't clear she was supposed to be a herbalist specifically until the DLC.

Snorpy has a Master's in mechanical engineering from GIT. That's what I think. (Guess what the G stands for). He made something very impressive for his thesis, but I don't know if it should be related to prosthetics or not.

The instruction booklet mentions that Triffany has a doctorate from NGU (didn't make that one up!), presumably in archaeology. There's also some evidence for this in the game. She describes herself as a leader in her field, something that's difficult to be in an academic field without a PhD, and Floofty addresses her as Professor a couple of times. I know that the word professor can also refer to anyone who's teaching at a tertiary level in American English, but she's not teaching anything at the moment. She's doing field research into her dead grandma on murder parasite island. So I think they do mean she has a professorship at a university. That's something that almost always requires a PhD or equivalent.

First Entry

Honestly,

I have not posted on here for many years, I was an avid Tumblr consumer since being in high school. I am now in my 30's working as a licensed mental health counselor. This will be a place for me to maybe get my shit together. I found blogging helpful in the past and my life got away from me.

I am hoping this will be a positive experience for me to process post therapy content and lived experience for someone with complex mental health needs who is also a provider. Which means I need to start by acknowledging my privilege and a white, mostly cisgender, well educated human. I have access to a network that a lot of people do not have. Yet live in fear of for the day for me to finally need a higher level of care and for me to be sitting across from another client or being treated by a colleague. There are always pro's and con's to things I guess.

For now this will be an experiment for me to document my life, as journaling has been hard and difficult and I will explain further at some point.

I will do my best to always tag my content and CW/TW anything specific. I will also not be going into graphic details about anything. I will also only be talking about me and people in my life that are not my clients. I will not be breaking HIPPA or disclosing anything about them. Their privacy is important not to just them but to me as well. As I would hope no other provider discusses my shit online. Only I want to be talking about my stuff online.

All you need to know right now is I have my masters degree in holistic mental health counseling. I am a huge nerd for psychological theories especially feminist and existential content. I also love other nerd shit like video games and board games. I also struggle with complex PTSD and ongoing dissociative symptoms. It has never been made super clear to me if I fall in the OSDD or DID category. While I wish to all the gods that my therapist would just tell me his thoughts on the matter I professionally understand why he has stayed away from pathologizing my experiences under a diagnostic code. I get it. I truly do. However, that does not mean I am mad about it. I will also not be disclosing my therapists name. I will simply be referring to him as My/Our therapist, the therapist, or simply N.

I will be sharing post therapy thoughts, possibly things I have written or made for art. I write, or one of us, writes a lot of poetry so that may make it on here if they feel like sharing. I suspect for the most part this will be a place for therapist me to process stuff.

That's it for now I think.

Fair Game Week WIPs

I wasn't certain at first if I'd have anything for FGW this year, but then a few ideas came along, and here we are! I have one day at the first draft stage, and the others are bubbling away nicely.

So here is a snippet from each day (in no particular order):

The Captain gave his horse her head, and the beast sprang forward willingly after standing still for so long. Her nostrils flared and the warm breath of horse and rider misted in the chill of the night air as they raced towards their prey. The highwayman, aware he was being pursued, leant low over her neck and spurred his mount on. Both of them knew the ground well, and Harbinger was sure-footed as she covered the ground. Qrow grinned, his teeth white against his smudged face. His pursuer, whoever they were, was no match for him and his trusty horse.

"Glynda Goodwitch, Paranormal Investigator. You are Mr Branwen, I hope." She held out a hand and Qrow shook it, nodding and finally finding his voice. "Uh, yes, that's me. Thank you for coming, and I'm sorry—" She smiled thinly. "You were expecting someone who looked a little different, perhaps?" "I don't really know what I was expecting. But if I'm honest, you don't look how I thought you might." "This is the twenty-first century, Mr Branwen. We must move with the times, you know." She looked about the hallway as she spoke, then fixed Qrow with a serious look. "You have a problem here, I believe."

Ignoring the previous question, he rolled his shoulders with a groan. "How long do you need to stare at your reflection anyway? You know you're the fairest in the kingdom, skin like finest porcelain, hair like spun silk, blah blah blah." Winter swivelled to face him. "You are simultaneously the best and worst bodyguard I've ever had. I only wish there was someone else, but the king insists it has to be you." Qrow offered her a wide grin. "Well, your virtue is safe with me, isn't it? And obviously I'm the best... Jimmy knows it and pays me handsomely, too." One perfect eyebrow shot up. "That's King James to you, if you please."

"Maybe." Clover's tone was not enthusiastic. "Or maybe I should just concentrate on lessons, and not think about getting off with anyone while we're here." "That would work too." Elm got to her feet. "You done? We should probably—" "What?" Clover turned his head to follow Elm's gaze, his heart stuttering as he saw Qrow walk into the dining room. He was on his own for once, but quickly wove between the tables to sit down opposite Summer on the far side of the room. Clover dragged his thoughts away from the effortless grace with which Qrow moved, to see Elm looking at him pityingly.

Qrow does what he usually does— ducks his head and looks down, rubbing the back of his neck. His cheeks are pink, and Clover finds his eyes drawn to them. There's a low mutter, and Qrow glances at him before looking away quickly. It's dawning on Clover that his feelings for Qrow are becoming... not inappropriate, exactly. Unwise, perhaps. While friendly bonds between colleagues could be beneficial, a romantic relationship might prove otherwise. Clover knows he must be careful. Qrow has issues he is dealing with; Clover doesn't want to jeopardise his fragile recovery. So he keeps his distance, wishing every day for a closeness that cannot be.

Qrow stared back through the window. "No, but people do get housemates they don't know. You can come and meet my friends, if you like. And... I dunno, you could give me a reference or something? To prove you're not some weirdo." Clover pouted. "I'm not some weirdo. I'm very ordinary." Qrow narrowed his eyes. "Weirdos always say that." "How many do you know? Do you hang out with them on a regular basis?"

I've never heard a bird make a sound like that before... it must be badly injured. He flitted from tree to tree, quickly drawing closer. The sounds were clear now, and as he paused for a moment Qrow heard a distinct Ouch. This made no sense at all. Gliding down to ground level, he reverted to his human form and stood up, listening once more. He moved quietly between the trees and after no more than fifteen paces came upon a sorry sight.

her world turned upside down as her fame became more and more apparent and suddenly she had an agent and people who actually watched her every move. it was an adjustment that she hadn’t quite been ready for despite the years of prep to get there but she did it, she managed to stay graceful even if a little blunt and tactless at times.

the first thing ophelia took on was a few modelling jobs here and there, a few add campaigns whilst she was doing auditions for anything her new agents sent her way. when she really made it was when she landed her modelling gigs with the kennedy’s. they were a big name and ophelia clicked with the younger girls, she became the hadid to their jenners.

from then on, the work didn’t stop. her run ways got bigger, her commercials more extravagant, she was on talk shows, hosting events, she was meeting presidents and dancing with hollywoods finest like she had been there the whole time.

through all of this though, ophelia kept up with her studies, she had not worked as hard as she had just to throw it all away so she attended classes where she could, the odd greek party and at 22 she graduated with a sports business management degree and a high flying modelling career.

ophelia now works with the likes of savage fenty, victoria secrets, she is the face of music videos and perfume adds, she’s always the most whispered name during paris fashion week. on top of this she works closely with several charities, co-ordinating large events as an ambassador for several large LA teams, namely the ice hockey kings.

elodie’s life had always been slightly planned out for her, and she struggled with that when she turned twenty and came back to hollywood

her mom was always scouting out the next best role, her grandfather had gone to yale, and she knew she had to appease both of the most important people in her life

so elodie was kind of hyper focused on being the best actor, being the best student, being the best singer that she really never prioritized anything else in life

relationships, romantic or friendly, were just something that took away her precious time so she’s kind of…. socially stunted in a way???? she’s simultaneously so mature and says things that make you thing she’s a grandmother who lived through a war but she’s also such a teenager deep down where doing things like a simple makeout session still make her feel like she’s doing something entirely too rebellious

Bangga Beast Master Ch.1

-Prolouge-

For many years their family wandered in space living a nomadic life of traveling merchants selling wares in an interplanetary market on what we call Pluto. There were many rare artifacts which they sold including Vacus, a rare mineral which was capable of cutting diamond. Aranea and Cassandra had a child together who grew to develop one of the first arcade games since the war which their father had nobly fought in. This is that story.

I "The Great Nyuu" programmed my own arcade game as a young child (about three terra years) the game was essentially like Ace Attorney phoenix wright however it is a virtual reality and not licensed by Nintendo. It also helps kids learn about the legal system where it is based so it’s educational.

My dad Aranea the electro-dragon wanted to market it back on Rayuba and help their young child obtain the recognition they deserved.

“It’ll be ok Son we will be there soon” said Aranea to their bi-pedal cobra dragon shark child who’s name was Nyuu(later changed to Nyuu the great). They had four arms as well from the injection which was received by bat person on Melal, and could fire lasers from their third eye from a young age as well.

Their other children Din-Din a playful and wandering spirit, as well as Pan-Pan Their beautiful daughter with Loretta the Red Panda. They also had the four-arm genetic trait from their parent Aranea who had also learned to levitate recently using the cosmic gauntlets or cestus as they were sometimes referred to as a jetpack to levitate above the ground. The reverse could also generate a powerful jumping which could be followed by swift kicks and punches.’

As a Parent, Aranea has tried to educate their children in the ways of fist law and the different kinds of cosmic gauntlets, weapons sold at cosmic farmers' markets, and can essentially be made out of any material. Some are programmed to help you organize equipment, some are for traveling, some can speed or slow time, etc…

Their mothers on the other hand were masters of their own. This is their story….

Ch.1 Welcome Home …Not (see what I did there) Their Mothers didn’t want them to only study Martial Arts, Music,the arts of Gardening, and Scavenging with me so they kept them nearby to teach them things like Math, Computers, and an ancient language on their planet called English. I’m not sure what good any of that will ever do for them but my son Nyuu has seemed to be onto something with this lawyer game of his. I am older now, about 12 years have passed since the events on Rayuba. My girls also teach them how to make ancient sculptures from their time called Pinatas, which they all beat with sticks on their birthdays and we fill them with sweets. I lay on my Bed on the ship looking into the stars wondering what Rayuba will look like after all the years. Its two Suns remain in the sky, however it feels silly to call any man this but "Paternum" is no longer there I hear.

"When I lived there I could swear he was close to a god, but now, a pathetic joke to me....No man is God; for me are all of them are just...Nothing...meaningless empty husk meant to be crushed on the wheel of time!"

We Finally made it back to my hometown on the Northern Coast. There we started our own little cosmic farmers market where I sold Stone and Bone Cestus to would-be practitioners of fist arts on the nearby islands, I sold spears made of bone and stone as well, Crossbows,Electricity Whips, Small Dwarf beetles like the ones on Ma'lel, and Nyuu got to sell his virtual arcade game which was just as successful as any of my en-devours. Things were looking good! My son Din-Din had purchased their own property on the other side of the coast and was starting a homestead. Pan-Pan had even started an online store and was getting into art and music and was helping me design characters for my novels. I was proud of all of them.

Things were going great...Until she showed up. A young Bat Girl, I was always suspicious of them after what happened with my crew 12 years ago on Ma'lel but now my past had caught up to me...cause I had fallen in love. Her name was Seras. She was about 5'8" and had short brown and grey fur, a long nose and short fangs, and cartilage piercings four on each ear. She was just a young girl when the war for Rayubas independence broke out and people became desperate. Many warriors were created in these times of terror. It was in these times when I became the master of Fist law you see before you today. She showed up to play Nyuu's game regularly and wanted to buy my Bone gauntlets one day. I just gave her a pair for free and offered her a lesson but she said "it was ok"..."Dang, I was striking out." "Perhaps she wasn't interested in me and was more interested in Nyuu and I should focus on helping him get the girl, so he doesn't end up a lonely video-game programmer Otaku armchair lord..." I thought at that moment.

Things that happened to me in 2022

On top of 'what I learned from xx years' I am going to start a new series this year which is 'things that happened to me in xx years', I saw this one creator on TikTok who did this casually for fun, and it was funny of course but it inspired me to jot down significant events/people in my life in 2022 that impacted me a lot. The word “me” in the title is really important because these are from my lens, and it may or may not be significant in other people’s POV but it’s alright we all live through our circumstances and viewpoint.

Suffered through a regional sales job as a line manager in a tobacco company, and learned a lot, mostly of things that I do not want. It made me realize my true passion and my boundaries and how easily I cave. It also made me realize things and people that I need to prioritize, and it pushed me further to cement my view towards corporate life. This job was a blessing in disguise, I knew it then and I knew it now and I was glad that I made it through despite coming out of it full of scars.

Working in my current company, back in Activation. Why did this place impact me? It’s because of the cultural switch that I had from being in tobacco to being back in food (snacks) and doing what I know best which is Activation. I only had to go into the office twice a week and it’s not even compulsory, I have a great boss. Everyone is respectful of each others’ boundaries. I have so much freedom and empowerment. Of course, there are stresses and I do still get anxious because of past traumas that I need to unlearn but this is the right place for me to unlearn them. So much room for me to do my job and then still have my ‘me’ time. I am so much happier and calmer here. So blessed.

My mom got out of the hospital and I had to see her sick, I have a very weird relationship with my family due to trauma. But seeing a parent sick is a whole different array of emotions that I refused to digest, there is that resentment and also pity. Resentment because I remembered being scolded for being sick when I was younger, because it was expensive to be sick when you were poor, and it was a nuisance to go to a government hospital because you have to wait for long. I had that ingrained in me so when I see the person who made me the way I am sick, I will naturally react like how she did, then it will lead to guilt and pity because we know it’s not their choice to be sick. It also awakened my defensive side and unlocked a lot of trauma that I’d been storing. It made me think of my future.

Visiting more than 10 Art Exhibitions/Museums, I couldn’t count and recall but I made it a habit to visit museums, galleries, exhibitions, and art markets just to immerse myself in creativity. To learn about artists’ drive, to see their work, and to interpret them from my point of view. So fucking blessed to have friends who can come with me on these adventures as well, namely Soscho, Diana, Safwan, Yue Keat, and Latun. Super blessed I swear to mother Venus. The reason why visiting these places is significant to me is because of how I want to be as a person. I’ve always been interested in History, and in 2015-2016 was when I got into Fine Art/Exhibitions in general when I was paid to write two theses for a Fine Art Master Student. I try to educate myself more on Art History this year, get to know local artists, and immerse myself in the culture.

Writing again. I feel like ever since I got back from Korea I’ve written more than I’ve ever written in the past five years and that made me so fulfilled. I’ve penned down thoughts, did writing prompts challenges, and just create the best way I know how. I did start writing again early in the year but I was battling a physical demon it was hard to be consistent. I am glad that I still have this avenue to create.

Visiting many places this year, Cherating with Soscho, Perhentian again with Jasmine, and Korea with Diana. Also invested in a lot of meaningful experiences, had our 3rd anniversary at Sepang Goldcoast with Safwan, and went to Genting with my teammates. Went to Kedah and Penang for Rochelle’s wedding, along with Safwan. Also had some Sip and Paint experience for Latun’s birthday and we did a Flying Yoga experience for my birthday. A lot of local destinations that I either went to for the first time or experienced for the umpteenth time, and multiple first-time activities. I love having these experiences because they colored my year and I can look back at it fondly. Wished I vlogged most of it, but I only started Vlogging in Korea. This is what pushed me to continue vlogging so I can look back.

BTS. I have been overwhelmed with my love towards them so much in 2022, I genuinely thought that “this is just a phase” but it wasn’t and I continued to be inspired and amazed by these talented people. They taught me a lot about going after your passion and dream, tolerating (and ignoring) those who are against you, and having faith in yourself. They’re also so talented and that made me wanna hone my skills more because creative people inspire. I bought Jimin’s earrings, I got Namjoon’s solo album, I bought In The Soop postcards, and yup I bought merch. Their life and artistry just inspire and soothe me so much that they deserve all the success that they have.

Diana. She gets a bullet point because she has been a breath of fresh air for me this year. We are friends since 2017 when we both joined Nestle as management trainees, we maintained a close relationship but it wasn’t like how it is now. We would go periods of talking or not talking and that’s on and off. We are in a friend group together and we will occasionally go out in smaller friend groups. But I think thanks to BTS, really cuz she got into them in 2020 and I got into them in late 2021 and it was just a way of bonding for us, we didn’t expect that our friendship will blossom into what it is now and it’s really hard to explain in words. I do have other close friendships, that are a soulmate-level type of connection but with Diana, it feels more. It feels like how BTS are with each other. Maybe because we love the tannies and admire them and we look up to them that we unknowingly started to cultivate our relationship like theirs. Those who know how BTS are with each other would know, but I won’t bother detailing it here. When you genuinely want someone to grow into their best self and root for them, being able to share the deepest darkest side of you too. That’s what she is to me now, it’s just a different kind of relationship.

Vlogging. This part has changed my life in a sense that I wanted to document it, I won’t curate it (yet) but more of a documentation of my 30s, since I missed out on doing it earlier in my youth, now I can and it’s never too late, you just have to start. I wanna upgrade my skills, and I am learning from other artists on YouTube how they enhanced their skills in video creation, slowly but surely.

Everything Valentine could have ever wanted was handed to him on a silver platter from the moment he was born. The only child of Valentine Armand Alexander II and Cecilia Elise Alexander née Dupont, the fortune of the landmark Lanesborough Hotel was always lined up for Valentine to inherit. The caveat was the small price of his soul.

Every single part of his life was structured, from the moments he woke up to the moments he slept and every single thing in between. Privacy was earned, not a right given, and Valentine was often toted as if he were an accessory more than a child. To his mother he was nothing more than a pet - referred to and treated as such. His father set rigid expectations that were enforced cruelly. Met goals were barely noticed while failure was harshly punished.

It made not for a good adult - at least not a stable one capable of trust and basic human affection. Valentine grew up to be the echo of both parents, a good combination of their worst qualities wrapped up in a handsome face and garnished with more money than he knew what to do with. Private schools, family trips around the world for a weekend getaway ... everything that people on the outside presumed to be glamorous. Inwardly it was hell, but he bore it in stoic silence.

His University degree was largely for show - something of a conversational starter at the lavish parties his family threw at their hotel or in their home. And over time they were conversational starters for his parties. Valentine formally inherited the Lanesborough at 30 - a public affair, widely publicized.

His business with The Narcos, however, began 5 years prior to that. Introductions to the organization came though university - a top notch school with drugs being dealt consistently. Rather than participating in the hedonism Valentine followed the red string from dealer to dealer, back to the source. When he was granted an audience with a member of The Narcos he requested to join in on their operation, offering the future Lanesborough Hotel as a hotspot for their operation.

He acquired the position of Advisor shortly after acquiring the Hotel formally. Valentine has been serving The Narcos rather faithfully since, offering wisdom and knowhow from the safety of his throne within the Lanesborough for a little more than 25 years.

— SMALL FACTS —

Was married to Milena Zakarian for 5 years. He kept his affiliations with The Narcos a secret the entire time, and once she chose her position as head of The Takers over their marriage, he proceeded to gaslight her on the matter to cover up his own connections to his own organization.

Valentine was briefly married once before Milena, but his parents made her disappear. He does not speak of this first wife, whom was only legally married to him for two months. Any records of this marriage have been erased or otherwise expunged.

He’s not afraid to get his hands dirty in the business, though he hardly needs to nowadays. While it’s not widely public (among the other organizations) that he rolls with The Narcos, he’s very loyal to them. It started as a form of personal rebellion against the neat and rigid structure his parents had enforced upon him and became his own.

Valentine II and Cecilia passed away when Valentine was in his mid-forties of natural causes. Rumor has it that Cecilia passed after her husband due to a broken heart - Valentine suspects that such evil couldn’t sustain itself without the source and she simply withered away.

The Lanesborough is known for lavish and extravagant parties, afternoon tea, and entertainment. It is open to the public, however rooms are an exorbitant fee for even just one night ---assuring that the guests are only of the highest upper crust. It’s also served well for dealing, meetings, and other Narcos business as Valentine and his heads see fit.

That’s why he gets killed—by Jo Tae-sup, a gigantic force of evil wearing this ‘revered politician’ mask.

Thankfully, heaven knows what he’s suffered is unfair. Hee-woo finds himself facing a grim reaper. Of course, everything comes with a price: “He must make Jo Tae-sup, the root of evil, pay for his sins!”

It is on this condition that Hee-woo gets to live a second life. It is also what Hee-woo wants.

Jo Tae-sup | LEE KYUNG YOUNG

Politician with great power who has the country under his thumb.

To him, politics is a children’s game. Media is a toy he can play with.

He knows how to play politics and how to handle the media and people. No matter how many eggs they throw, those worthless journalists and small-fry politicians cannot break the rock-solid trust that Jo Tae-sup has with people.

He is the definition of a man with two faces. On the surface, Jo Tae-sup is a politician devoted to the people. He listens to the voices of the powerless. He is charismatic enough to win people’s hearts.

He thinks he has a righteous cause. To make Korea a great country, you must unite the people. That’s how you earn great enough power to rule the world.

It sounds like he has a good cause. But the end justifies the means: he eliminates anything, anyone that gets in his way.

Kim Hee-ah | KIM JI EUN

Only daughter of Kim Geon-young, owner of Chunha Group.

She has everything: extensive knowledge, brains, guts, and exceptional looks. Unlike any chaebol heir, she is so down-to-earth she even enjoys regular gukbop (hot soup with rice). She is independent, and has the courage of her convictions.

Ever since she was a child, she has been called that famous genius among the chaebol. When other chaebol heirs cost billions to get private lessons, she simply stayed behind to study after regular school hours.

Unlike her older brothers, who chose their majors under their father’s influence, Hee-ah had a bigger picture in mind for her future. So, after graduating from specialized science high school, she got into Hankuk University to major in computer engineering – where all the engineering brains gather.

“The world will be won by those who get a hold of high technology.” That’s Hee-ah’s motto.

Her father, Chairman Kim Geon-young, has high expectations for Hee-ah. Because he thinks she could be the key brain behind Chunha Group’s future growth. But Hee-ah disagrees with her father when it comes to running a business.

Instead of taking over the group, she wants to devote her life to academic research. For now, she only wishes to continue her studies and find happiness in small things.

Lee Min-soo | JUNG SANG HOON

Hee-woo’s law school senior and friend.

He appears to be a slacker, but he most definitely is not a slacker. No one knows what is going on inside his head. He is like a wild beast that keeps his claws hidden—he does not look like an ally, nor an enemy. He boasts a resume that is just as impressive as Hee-woo’s.

He has switched his majors, between medicine and law, at Hankuk University, when most people have trouble even getting into it. He even got admitted into music and art schools, but he dropped out, making him a true genius. He has mastered liberal arts, engineering, and fine art, except sports.

To this genius Lee Min-soo, the world is just boring. Because he is so exceptional and everything comes easy.

Then, Lee Min-soo meets Kim Hee-woo. He used to care little about the world despite having so much curiosity. Now, Kim Hee-woo makes him a changed man. As if he finally met someone he could call his true rival, Min-soo secretly views Hee-woo as his competition. Competition in a good way, though–now, Min-soo has finally begun to find his life fun and fulfilling.

Kim Seok-hoon | CHOI KWANG IL

Ambitious like Jo Tae-sup, but also patient enough to keep his feelings hidden.

He can be quite a generous and righteous man, but he secretly has a venomous snake coiled up inside.

He skillfully handles office politics among prosecutors, but he himself is not a competent prosecutor. He is rather well-connected than competent.

That’s why he is thirsting for bigger cases that he thinks his position deserves. So he begins to take cases Hee-woo brings to him, using them to cement his position as one of the higher-ups in the prosecutor’s office.

He supplies inside information about prosecutors to Jo Tae-sup who will extend a lifeline to him. Kim Seok-hoon follows Jo Tae-sup’s instructions and holds influence over prosecution offices. But there is an undercurrent of tension between the two. He’s Jo Tae-sup’s ‘dog,’ henchman, who never kneels before him.

Kim Gyu-ri | HONG BI RA

Hee-woo’s ally who went to the same high school and law school at Hankuk University.

She passed the bar exam earlier than Hee-woo did, and is now working as his senior prosecutor.

Because back in school, she got a lot of help from Hee-woo, she’s willing to be there for him no matter what.

In the past she once had a crush on him, but now they are close friends after becoming prosecutors.

Jang Il-hyun | KIM HYUNG MOOK

Kim Seok-hoon’s henchman and elite prosecutor who went to Hankuk Univ. and graduated from law school (education center) at the top of his class.

A member of the secret elite club organized by Jo Tae-sup, he is also the one who introduces Hee-woo into the club.

Choi Gang-jin | KIM JIN WOO

Considered an associate of Kim Seok-hoon, alongside Jang Il-hyun, he thought he laid the groundwork for his rise in power.

A prosecutor, he wants to become a politician like Jo Tae-sup. Until Hee-woo comes around, he was the youngest member of Jo’s secret club.

An aspiring politician, he is great at taking care of his credentials and connections. He is financially tied to his senior Jang Il-hyun, so they have their own connection between them.

Kim Han-mi | KIM JAE KYUNG

Kim Seok-hoon’s illegitimate child.

She has exceptional looks that turn heads when she walks by. She’s got brains just like her father.

But it’s her father Kim Seok-hoon who has always held her back.

Seok-hoon has kept Han-mi from whatever she tried to do because she needs to be kept secret. Since she was a child, she’s hung up on the fact that she is an illegitimate child, so she went astray and is extremely resentful toward her father.

While she was wandering astray in school, Han-mi met Hee-woo who changes her life gradually. Hee-woo never caves in to his peers with more influence; he doesn’t care what others think; and he acts indifferent to her who develops a crush on him. His grit and self-confidence comes as a shock to her.

So she approaches Hee-woo, asking him for help with her studies. Taking private lessons from Hee-woo, Han-mi gradually becomes more confident, gets into a university she nearly gave up, and starts dreaming new dreams.

Park Sang-man | JI CHAN

In his senior year of high school before entering Hankuk Univ. he is hit by the biggest crisis ever: His father is falsely accused of murder in the Yangpyeong case. That’s when he meets Hee-woo. Hee-woo comes up offering to uncover the truth of the case and bring justice to his wrongfully accused father.

After meeting Hee-woo, Sang-man decides to join him on his journey. He doggedly follows Hee-woo around and becomes unabashedly loyal to him.

Even when Hee-woo, a man of few words, coldly scolds him, Sang-man smiles because he does not mind and is loyal. Not just allies, they become a sort of family with a strong bond between them.

Sang-man becomes Hee-woo’s most reliable ally, throwing himself to support him. He uses his hacking skills to provide information for Hee-woo.

Woo Yong-soo | LEE SOON JAE

Living legend in real estate business. Hee-woo’s real estate teacher.

He appears humble, but he actually has property worth billions with experience and a sharp instinct for real estate deals.

When Hee-woo gets started in auction business, he decides Woo is his master the moment he lays his eyes on him.

Hee-woo follows Woo around, mastering real estate bidding skills. Woo helps Hee-woo lay a financial foundation for his plans to get his revenge on Jo Tae-sup.

Rules/overview this rewrite in the beginning of Part 1

‘sup ya beautiful bastards it’s time to gush about the process of storytelling and writing as we fix up the fix it fic so let’s just jump into it

A quick recap of Part 2, and I swear this recap is faster than the recap last time: Chapter 3 of Age of Calamity opens with a more substantial scene the beginning points of Revali’s character, and contrasting the old position that Link and eggbot have, so that their later changes in this chapter (well, at least for Link in this chapter) are more pronounced. We edited a bit of the dialogue to make Revali’s intentions make a bit more sense, while also putting some little foreshadowing points with some camera tricks for the Hollow Champions. The Hollow Champions can now speak, which means their potential for being used to bring out the flaws or bitter aspects of each character is more readily available further into the story. And of course, we’ve introduced the main antagonist of Astor, and coupling his presence and dynamic with Zelda’s insecurities. While his intentions of needing Zelda for something is clear, his motivations and backstory remain a mystery as of yet, the only true clue we have so far being some sort of connection to eggbot.

I didn’t get any big asks or comments about Part 2 so I’m going to assume that it was mostly well received (although I will note that I promise I’m going to flesh out Revali to be more than he has been presented as of yet, this is just the very very start of this development don’t you worry your feather loving butts) that being said, you should totally critique me or give me your opinions or comments. I’d love to hear them! Although, keep in mind that I am restraining my rewrite to the guidelines already said, so don’t get mad at me for not killing off all the Champions or something. Thaaat’s a rewrite for another time. So yeah if you reblog you get a little kiss from me because believe it or not I spent a lot of time trying to rewrite an entire storyline while keeping it’s tone and integrity intact. Okie dokie then chaps! Let us finally delve into Urbosa lesbian vibes, a zest of Zelink angst, rants about pacing, and a couple tablespoons of Astor backstory, all starting in the latest stage of Chapter 3: The Road Home, Besieged

So right of the bat, big problem here. This Chapter follows directly after the events of Korok Forest, so you assume that maybe “The Road Home” refers to the team, going home, back to the castle, to tell King Rhoam what’s up. But...that’s apparently not the case.

So this entire stage, firstly, it brushes over any scenes where Zelda, Link or the other Champions might talk to King Rhoam about the Master Sword, or the Deku Tree, or...hmm what else happened last stage that might be interesting to see—oh yEAH HOW ABOUT that mysterious magic guy that tried to kill Zelda and was going off about the future and stuff?? That guy that wielded a bunch of dark magic and malice looking stuff and, uh yeah, you’d think it might be important and interesting to see the King’s take on was is essentially a wanted traitor to the crown who may or may not be leading the entire movement for the Calamity’s uprising. But nope, no one asks questions, no one says anything or has interesting conversations that reveal stuff about the plot. It's just….just all about Zelda and ooooOOooo she can’t awaken her powers oh no what’s a gal to do!

And I do mean that quite literally, this entire stage is all centered around two scenes with Zelda. The first, an admittedly narratively important scene of Zelda having a quick flashback about eggbot after he sings her a song, but it lasts for five seconds. And the second, being a pep talk with Urbosa as Link eats rocks in the background. For the majority of this stage, it’s all focused on Zelda, and pacing wise, it does virtually nothing to progress the narrative/plot forward.

And on paper, there’s nothing wrong with that! Hell, people read entire fanfictions dedicated to character development and relationships that have absolutely no external plot. Having a scene dedicated to just character development is completely fine, it’s something that’s pretty common and even encouraged to an extent. The problem arises when you remember that this is a story being told through the medium of a video game.

Now, I am going to try and breeze by this because, similar to Age of Calamity, I have to also construct this post with pacing that keeps my audience engaged, while progressing with my core narrative and story. But I highly encourage you to watch through this video by hello future me (On Writing: How to Master Pacing) because a lot of what I know about this I’ve picked up from his videos, and if you’re a writer or just someone who thinks storytelling is cool, it’s a great guide to the art of pacing.

Anyhow. There are two levels of pacing within a story. There is the small type of pacing, like for the structure of a singular scene. And there is the pacing of the overall core narrative, how the larger beats of the entire story is revealed. Good pacing for your core narrative is about whether the reader feels like they are getting closer to the big thing, the big climax or answer or promise of satisfaction. The smaller type of pacing, for your singular scenes, focuses on that timing between how close you get to achieving new information, this refers to your slow and fast pacing, tension versus rapid action.

So, overall the rule of thumb is: the amount of time you invest into your smaller scenes, even put together, that must correlate with a big enough payoff in the core narrative. That’s what good pacing is. (And that’s why people make stuff like the Three Act Structure to help visualize this pacing process but obviously other forms of pacing guidelines exist like the Five and Seven Act Structures but that’s too complicated for this Nintendo Game anyhow that’s just some educational flavour for ya to impress your highschool English Teacher I guess)

So knowing that, the question now is: Does The Road Home, Besieged contribute good pacing to the story? This is going to be my excuse for changing up other later scenes in the game, so when I mention pacing and narrative again, remember this. The time spent playing for thirty minutes, minimum, in the game, to only be paid off by two lines of character development isn’t good pacing. So the answer is “no.”

Delving as long an amount of time as thirty minutes, means that pretty much everytime a stage is complete, you must introduce new substantial progress to your story. A game like this just doesn’t have time to waste it’s valuable cutscenes on character development alone. There’s an even further wrench in the issue when you consider you also need to account for sidequests, so you could really be forcing your player to go through hours of gametime before you introduce new details in the story.

Obviously it’s not always gonna be cut and dry like that—sometimes you have to account for how enjoyable the gameplay is, and sometimes the amount of character development offsets any lack of narrative development—but for the majority of stages I’m gonna change, they all suffer this pacing problem. In a game that's entire story hinges on these cutscenes, bad pacing is just something it doesn’t have time for.

Anyhow anyhow anyhow, I got to get my dose of serotonin by talking about pacing writing structure and stuff and blah blah, so now I shall grace you with the changes that address these problems that would theoretically lead to vast improvement. I gave you this reasoning and backstory to writing because I am making hella changes, to hopefully make the experience more “poggers,” which is something the cool kids say these days if you didn’t know.

Firstly, timeline wise this stage is gonna take place directly after the Korok Forest battle. The gang is returning home from the battle, with Link, the new wielder of the Master Sword, along with this new information regarding a certain Astor character.

We open the same way it does in game, focusing on Zelda’s face, before the frame is suddenly blocked by the pommel of the Master Sword. A wordless way to express how the sudden revelation of Link being the hero has forced its way into Zelda’s mind, great use of camera Koei Tecmo 10 outta 10

Now I don’t want to immediately jump into Zelda’s “oh poor me I can’t awaken my powers” dialogue because—and this is something even Breath of the Wild is guilty of—This game seems to forget that there are other characters besides Zelda. It’s marketed towards kids, sure, but I assure you that kids playing this game have a longer attention span than 2 minutes. You don’t need to keep reminding the audience every single scene about how Zelda is anxious about her powers. It gets redundant, you waste the audience’s time, and therefore you waste your own time, because you could have been using that precious screen time to develop some other thing further. So anyhow, goes a bit like this.

Zelda’s walking, the Master Sword comes into frame. Zelda looks down at the ground but keeps walking, but you can tell from her expression that she’s troubled. Don’t need to waste time on dialogue for her here, show don’t tell, we need to make the most of the scene here. Camera is still on Zelda, but the focus blurs shifts from Zelda to the Champions behind her. We can start with Mipha, I don’t have my heart set heavily on any specific dialogue, but I want her to say something along the lines of “how proud she is of Link” and what an honor it will be to fight by the side of not just her dear friend, but also someone selected by the goddess to be the hero. Subtextually, I want her to say this in a tone that suggests that she doubts the need for her to be here at all. She’ll say something like “He’s grown so…” glances up at Link who's just walking ahead, “...so much stronger than I could ever imagine. [Something Something] His power has grown so much over the course of a few days, more than I have achieved in a lifetime.” She looks down, but she still has a sweet smile.

Now I’m doing this because I want to develop further this plot line of “getting stronger” that Age of Calamity sets up but never does anything with. Remember how in Chapter 2, Mipha asks Daruk to train with her to get stronger? I really like the possibilities of this arc with Mipha as it can not only parallel with her feelings for Link, but also make her character better as an individual. Mipha wants to get stronger so that she can protect Link, but now she thinks that Link’s already growing stronger to an extent that she might not be needed. She’s not jealous of Link, nor does she wish him to be weaker, she simply wants to be more than she already is. This is literally echoing her words that she left her father, about how leaving the Domain and experiencing new challenges would be “good for her.” So I wanna run with it. The dialogue here establishes Mipha’s motivation to grow stronger, almost equivalent to a rivalry of sorts.

So after Mipha says this, Revali scoffs and butts in. Again, I’m not too set on any particular dialogue here, just something like “Hmph! Well, I don’t know about that. Seems to me all that’s happened is some magic sword gave the knight an ego boost. Blade’s only as strong as the little Hylian who wields it, and—based on my own extended experience and professional observations of course—I’ve yet to see this ‘stronger’ boy that you speak of.” Another camera pan to Link a ways in front of them. “If you ask me, hero or no, that knight is still exactly the same as I first met him.”

Revali places a wing on his chest dramatically. “Perhaps if you’re truly keen on seeing growth in skill and strength, Mipha, you’d do well to—”

“Flattering of an offer as that may be, Revali,” Urbosa interjects, “But I think Mipha might find it difficult to observe growth from one of the shortest Rito in Hyrule.”

Cue laughter from others or snickering or something. We just need some banter to add a bit more flavour to the characters. Revali can do a little huff and cross his wings or flip his scarf or something. But then Urbosa continues.

“Although...he is right about one thing.” Urbosa looks straight ahead. “A sword does not alter a hand, just as strength does not alter character.” She puts a hand on Mipha’s shoulder. “Grow as he might, there is no doubt in my mind that he is the same boy as he’s always been.” Urbosa looks up in the direction of Zelda. “Whether you realize it or not.”

Ok so, scene’s not done yet, BUT quick gush on the dialogue flow here. I’m trying to establish parallels in these character perspectives based on the flow of conversation. We started with Mipha who, like I said, wished to grow stronger along with Link. This flows into Revali who also has a similar parallel as he wishes to grow above Link’s shadow. But the distinction between Mipha and Revali is that Mipha think’s Link’s strength is earned, and Revali thinks he cheated, gaining authority through a magic sword, and not through merit and skill. Thus, leading to Revali’s perspective of Link being exactly the same as he’s always been, he believes the sword doesn’t change anything. Urbosa then speaks, because she thinks exactly the same thing. However, her distinction is that Link is the same as he’s always been: a determined young boy earned his place and cares for his friends. Then she looks to Zelda who, as we know, will develop a perspective that contradicts this. So you get it? This scene is like 20 seconds long but it already mirrors nearly all the character parallels and perspective, that’s why the flow of dialogue is important. And I know half of you probably think these kinds of details are a stretch but I promise you it’s not, just look at any movie or show ever and I guarantee you can find similar stuff there too. Ok moving on moving on—

Urbosa looks up at Zelda, comments her, “He’s the same boy, whether you realize it or not” piece of dialogue. Camera shifts back to Zelda and Link, who, idk if I mentioned this, but in the scene there’s enough distance between the Champions and Zelda and Link that the Champions can speak without the other two listening. So they didn’t hear any of this.

So the camera is back on Zelda, and now we can get her “How can I…..If I am unable to awaken my inner power….” line. Eggbot senses her sadness, does his little cheer up dance, Zelda gets a flashback.

One small change I wanna make to this flashback: Instead of just a baby Zelda going “nighty-night” I want there to ALSO be a figure in the background behind eggbot wearing a silk royal blue dress. And said woman has blonde hair and she’s by the table back there. We don’t have to show her face or anything because Nintendo hates that. Just place the woman somewhere in the back somewhere

Also possibly you could add the shadow of another figure by the doorway, maybe? It would serve good continuity purposes for the plot points that I’m telling, but that part is not as necessary. I just need at least the woman there.

Then Zelda is like “I remember you” to eggbot and all that and blah blah… Now, instead of Impa offscreen just yelling “enemy ahead!” I just want it to be a full on ambush. Not like a major one, but just enough where the group is surprised a bit. Maybe on the cliffs above, a lizalfo throws a boomerang, or a bokoblin shoots and arrow, or even just throws a rock. I don’t really care. I just need this to happen because…

As soon as this danger is presented, Link turns around to grab Zelda’s hand and they start running again. And he can like use his body to try and shield her a bit, I need it to parallel how he acted during Chapter 1 on the road to the Royal Tech Lab. However, this parallel has one important distinction because…

Zelda rips he grip from Link’s after a moment. “You don’t need to coddle me!” She says, or something along those lines. “Y-You...You’re the hero aren’t you! I’m perfectly fine, you don’t need to spend your precious time playing babysitter to me.” In the distance, a horde of monsters is beginning to form. Zelda looks between the monsters and Link’s Master Sword, her expression unreadable. “Well? Just...just go do what you need to do.” Link hesitates, looking between her, and the approaching monsters. Zelda speaks more sternly now, “Go!” So Link, not one to disregard an order from the Princess, gives one last look to Zelda before setting off towards the monsters. Maybe Zelda can take a deep breath to steady herself after he leaves, but as soon as Link unsheathes his sword, the metal glistening in the setting sunlight, it cuts immediately to gameplay. Start battle.

For essays’ purposes this is the part where I explain why this is better than the original. So here’s my reasoning:

Uhhh, it just is. :3

Ok but seriously, I’ve already talked a tone about why the pacing and dialogue flow is better than the original. But also this scene doesn’t just say “Ooo Zelda is sad about her powers,” because that’s not interesting. Like I said, it’s redundant information. What is interesting is see how characters deal with that internal conflict and how it affects their relationships. AKA Zelda’s relationship with Link, who now basically embodies the success that she’s been working so hard towards but never achieved, is deteriorating a bit. I wanted to get that sense of the Zelda that we see in Breath of the Wild because all things considered, they should be roughly the same character.

So that’s that, you fight the battle, the Hollows show up a bit, so insert “dark evil Champion” dialogue because if you’re gonna use the evil clone trope might as well use it to the fullest. Then you fight the Talus and hurray horrah the day is saved.

Then we have that iconic Urbosa motherly pep talk to Zelda as Link eats rocks in the background. Now honestly, I’m not that big a fan of the first half of the dialogue, so I wanna change it into something more interesting. But the rest of the beats and camera work go roughly the same.

Zelda: “Link is...so much stronger now”

Urbosa: “‘And yet I have not.’ I presume that’s what you’re thinking, hmm?”

Zelda: “Well it’s true, isn’t it? More and more, monsters have been appearing around Hyrule. It is a sign that the Calamity draws near. So...there isn’t much time. And still, no sign of my power awakening.”

Urbosa: *sighs* “Little bird…”

Zelda cuts her off, in an attempt to change topics: “Why do you call me that?”

Urbosa: “Hmm?”

Zelda: “Little bird...I feel like I’ve heard it before. Why do you call me that?”

Urbosa, after a beat looks off in the distance or something: “A long time ago, my dear friend would call me to the palace, or perhaps invite herself over to mine, [she chuckles] ...and she would talk with me all day, and ask me to gaze upon her little bird with her. Her dearest daughter...a princess”

Zelda: “You mean my…”

Urbosa just smiles with a soft nod: “Back then, times were a bit different. The destiny that you have was still upon the Queen, who worked day and night to refine her powers and fulfill her destiny. In just a few short years, I went from being friends with a Queen, to friends with the destined sealer of the Calamity.”

Another pause, before Urbosa speaks again: “But...she was still the same woman I had grown with. Still the same loving mother who spoke about her little bird with joy. She had not changed one bit.”

Urbosa: “Even when your mother passed, her loving smile was there until the very end. She always loved you—believed in you, Zelda. She had great hope, great faith that her daughter would grow into the beacon of light Hyrule needed. That even with her gone, you would spread your wings and fly, because you were just that amazing to her.” *Urbosa puts her hands on Zelda’s shoulders.*

Urbosa: “Destiny did not change your mother’s love, just as it does not change Link’s courage, or your value.” *the camera can pan to Link eating rocks now*

Urbosa looks directly at Zelda now: “Look how hard we’ve all worked to get this far, how hard you have worked to get here. While we may grow in strength, in that regard, we’re all one in the same.”

Zelda: “...I….well…”

Urbosa: “What did the Great Deku Tree say? There is no need to fret princess.”

Urbosa: “Our faith, Link’s, your mother’s, it’s all as strong as ever. And everyday, with every moment that you travel towards your destiny, it just grows. It is always with us. So believe in that, have hope, yet, little bird.” *Eggbot can scurry up and make cute noises here next to Zelda*

Urbosa: “I know, you are where you need to be. You must accept that too.”

Zelda: “...”

Zelda gives a solemn nod: “Thank you, Urbosa.”

So that’s that scene! Don’t let the length fool you, it’s technically even shorter than the original scene in Age of Calamity. So why is it, in my opinion, better? Because for one, we actually get an insight into Zelda’s mom and Urbosa’s relationship, something that was PROMISED To us but never given and I’m still a bit salty about it. Anyhow, in addition to just getting some lore details, that relationship between the Queen and Urbosa is important for this scene because, just like Urbosa spells out, it’s in direct parallel with Link and Zelda.

Before the Queen suddenly got sick and died, she was destined to seal the Calamity. But she didn’t let that destiny change her, she was still the same loving mother to the end. Now that is something that Zelda needs to realize about Link, as his newly acquired destiny doesn’t change who he was before, the knight who cares for her and wishes to protect her. Zelda needs to realize he’s the same and that she can still trust and confide in him. Hence, that’s why this mom backstory is in this scene and not somewhere else, because it serves to the narrative but also more impactfully to the character development.

The dialogue could probably be polished a bit more but come on, not half bad for an improvement yeah? So that concludes Chapter—

SIKE we’re not done yet. We still have to move into the entire point of this stage, the road home, to the castle.

So, badabing badaboom, I’m adding an entirely new scene from scratch right here at the end, because it is VITAL that I set up something new about the story, as a sort of clincher. So anyhow

Zelda is alone with her father, let’s set it in the royal library (Intact, not ruined, of course) because we don’t see enough of that location and it’s really cool. So Zelda is briefing her dad about the events in Korok Forest and on the journey back home. I know I always gush about cinematography but it can’t be fully appreciated since I’m….writing,,, this, BUT I think it might be fun if the side shots of Zelda have her background be some bookcases of the library, maybe half bookcases and the other half the ornate walls. Then the background for the King’s shots is the full symmetry of the elegant staircases.

[And if you needed the specific reasoning for that, because it makes camera shots more fun. Like when Zelda says something that aids in her scholarly side, the camera angle can change slightly where the bookcases take up more of the frame, and then when the King’s will takes more power, then the book cases can be angled a bit more out of frame. And then the symmetry of the King by the staircase is a way to show his higher power dynamic to her, and contrasts well with Zelda’s shots since the bookcases are dark and the stone is lighter, so on a meta level is also makes it easier for the audience to understand where they are. Shot composition is fun ok, and that’s not even getting into color theory (Thinks about Baby Driver and LaLaLand....even videogames like Undertale and Hollow Knight have such wonderful shot composition and use of color theory hhhhh love it)]

Ok so Zelda’s briefing the King in the library, she’s standing while he’s sitting at a desk. There’s maybe two or four Royal Guards on the staircase entrances, but for the most part, they’re alone. You can tell that this meeting between them has been going on for a bit now, as from Zelda’s dialogue, she’s retelling events midway through the story.

The King is flipping through some paperwork, not really looking Zelda in the eyes. She continues speaking.

“And so...with the malice cleared and the monsters being dealt with, Link and I made our way into the heart of Korok Forest.”

The King hums a response, flipping through another page. “And this is when Link pulled out the Sword that Seals the Darkness then, I presume.”

Zelda paused, as of thinking of how to phrase her next words. “Not exactly. I...we both encountered someone beforehand. A man, with a pale face, and dark hair and robes, and he had the power to control malice, using a strange object in one of his hands.”

Rhoam stops writing in his journal or whatever. He doesn’t look up, but the sudden stop he makes is obvious. Zelda notices, but continues.

“He talked about...the Calamity, and my birthday...destiny, and the future….I’m not quite sure I can remember his intentions word for word. But he did introduce himself as—“

“Astor…” Zelda and the King say simultaneously. The King has fully perked up now, looking at Zelda. She’s pleased to see a reaction from him. The King rises from his chair, and starts pacing a bit, stroking his beard thoughtfully like the asshole he is.

“So you know him then? This Astor man? Who is he, father? What does he—“

“Were you alright? Did he hurt you, or mention anything else?”

Zelda pauses for a moment before shaking her head, as if the concern he was expressing was uncharacteristic. “N-No. No, I’m fine, and Link was there. During the battle, as Link fought him off, that was when the sword was pulled. Then Astor fled, or...” Zelda pauses for a beat, “retreated...he expressed his wish to speak with me again.”

Another beat of silence, as Rhoam gets up, hands clasped behind his back. “He used to work at this very palace.” The shot is now directly on Rhoams back, as he faces a bookcase, although it’s clear that he’s just deep in thought, and not just staring at books. Rhoam is in third column of the shot (he’s to the right, not in the center)

“A trusted advisor. Someone gifted with foresight, who many years ago, had first predicted the coming Calamity.” Cut to shot of Rhoams face, the camera being by the bookcase, so that we see Rhoam’s expression and Zelda’s.

“In truth, I thought him dead. For the last time I saw him alive—truly, truly alive—was ten long years ago...” The shot goes back to the original establishing shot, of Rhoam facing away from the camera, towards the bookcase, he’s standing to the right, hands still clasped behind his back.

“...when your mother still graced this earth.”

From left frame, a younger Astor walks up and stands beside Rhoam. He runs his fingers along the books. Rhoam looks to his left, as if he is seeing Astor. Camera cuts to Astor’s right, as if looking at him from Rhoam’s perspective. He continues brushing his fingers against the spines of the books, before he finds the one he’s looking for. Pulling it out, he opens the book, flipping through its pages, before giving a genuine smile. Cut back to wide angle behind them. With the book, Astor starts walking back out left frame, but this time the camera follows him. Filter fade to a memory tint as the camera pans right to left

[when the camera fades fully into the Astor memory, the figures can have that silhouetted effect like you see in botw. Cause I know Nintendo hates making new character models for some reason.]

So if it wasn’t clear already, even though the memory filter doesn’t come immediately, Astor isn’t actually there, but it’s just a flashback. I’m a sucker for merges, which is something this game and botw NEVER do which bugs me because there are so many creative ways you could introduce flashbacks without just doing “ooOooOoo fade to sepia filter and then oooOOooOOO we fade back to reality and no time has passed.” I apologize if my explanation of the camera doesn’t make sense as it’s hard without much visual aid, but hopefully it makes sense so far. Anyhow! Let’s continue.

We’re now fully immersed in this memory, but King Rhoam’s voice still narrates overhead.

Astor brings the book to one of the desks in the library, where a woman sits writing something onto paper. News flash, it’s the queen. Astor hands her the book and starts speaking about something, although you can tell the tone of their conversation is light, almost akin to Zelda rambling about Sheikah Technology. The Queen laughs about something unheard, as Astor continues ranting about something, his hands moving to like a professor giving a lecture.

Rhoam Narration: “When he had first predicted the Calamity, things were much more hopefully for our kingdom. As although his foresight granted him only glimpses and fragments of a future, he was almost certain that with the Guardians, and the strength of your mother’s power, our victory would be absolute.”

Scene changes to the Queen walking down a corridor, Astor is leaning against the wall by a window.

Rhoam Narration: “He and your mother would often work together tirelessly to study the ancient arts, to make the most of the powers given by the goddess.”

The Queen has walked up to Astor now. She crouches down and gestures to her left, the side not yet seen by the camera.

Rhoam Narration: “In fact…”

The camera changes to focus to where the Queen was looking towards—a young Zelda, crouched behind her mother’s dress, stares up at Astor.

Rhoam Narration: “I would not be surprised if you found within yourself, a memory of such.”

I would prefer if you could see the expressions of Astor (giving Zelda not a smile, but not really a frown or anything rude either) and young Zelda. But I guess it can also just be silhouettes too cause again, Nintendo hates giving us younger character models outside of first person POV stuff. Anyhow.

The scene fades, the light from the window dimming as everything darkens.

Rhoam Narration: “I often times wish we could go back to such a time, when victory and pride swam in every corner of this castle. But of course…”

The scene brightens again, although not as bright as before. It’s the exact same corridor with the large window, but now it’s raining. A young Zelda stands alone in front of it, looking outside.

Rhoam Narration: “Such a time did end…”

We now cut to a new scene, King Rhoam is walking down a hall, the camera’s perspective is of a bird’s eye view, like we’re peering in from outside a window. We can see the shadow of Astor chasing after him, as he starts speaking frantically about something, not quite, but almost to the point of shouts.

Rhoam Narration: “After your mother died, the visions of the future shifted drastically. No longer was there glimpses of rolling fields and shimmering skies, but instead, of rubble, red earth, and death.”

You can now more clearly hear the words coming out of Astor’s mouth. He is telling something about failure, and souls, and the Calamity to the King’s ear. He’s still walking forward.

Rhoam Narration: “He was adamant that our demise was now coming faster than ever, and that without your mother, we were doomed. That even you, should you take up your mother’s mantle, could not save everyone.”

Astor: “I’m telling you Your Majesty, if you go down this path, there is no going back.”

King Rhoam: “There is no other choice, we are moving forward.”

Astor: “I don’t think you quite understand the true gravity of the fate you’re choosing for yourself. It is a guarantee that you, me, and countless others shall die.”

King Rhoam: “I don’t want to hear it.”

Astor: “And of course, there are a multitude of possibilities, but the end result is the same.”

Astor: “Do you have a preference, perhaps? Crushed by rubble? Suffocation under ash?”

Rhoam’s tone is deadly: “Stop.”

Astor: “I’ve seen fire too. I’m not yet quite sure the exact circumstances that lead to flame appearing and spreading so quickly, but rest assured that if you—”

King Rhoam: “Stop.”

Astor: “If you saddle someone else with this duty I am absolutely certain that you and I will—”

King Rhoam, voice not shouting, but still with a booming intensity: “Just like you were so certain of our victory 10 years ago?”

Astor’s face darkens. He’s silent for a moment, collecting his words before practically spitting the first articulation: “...That, future, was the one that would come to be if Her Majesty was alive. If you’re so unsatisfied with my departed wisdom you can go ahead and flail around with destiny alone. You think I choose for these events to happen? You think I lie when I saw I want what’s best for this kingdom—”

King Rhoam: “What’s best for you.”

An ugly pause.

King Rhoam: “It is decided, Seer. It’s time you accept this. My wife is dead. That is the truth. Thus the role of sealing the Calamity shall pass to my daughter. She will work to awaken her own ability. It will be her duty to save us.”

Astor half laughs: “A child?! Surely you don’t need the supernatural to see how foolish that is.”

King Rhoam’s voice is even more stern: “You are living proof that the future is not absolute. Therefore I...must place all belief in her ability.”

The King walks away, leaving Astor alone. Weirdly, he smiles. Perhaps to mask some other emotion.

After another moment, Astor yells to the King: “I’ll fix this! Alone if I must!” He’s chuckling as he shakes his head. “Your useless faith may cost many lives, but even so mark my words, I will fix this.”

The King looks back, but says nothing, his expression unreadable. He continues forward, leaving Astor alone chuckling, or perhaps something in between chuckling and crying to himself.

Rhoam Narration: “We haven’t spoken since that day. I simply left him to his devices. If he was so determined to find another way to stop the Calamity, then who was I to stop him. I doubt my word could have swayed his mind regardless.

We’re now looking at a room, the camera is just by the doorway, looking at an office, circular and domed. It’s stone brick walls are covered in parchment and ripped books, covered in symbols and frantic writing. An old Sheikah tapestry hangs crudely on the left wall, and the window on the right seems to tint grey, or even a deepest crimson. Centerframe, is the back of Astor, robe hanging just above the paper ridden floor. He is flipping through something on his desk.

Rhoam Narration: “Fixated as he was on the perfect future that you mother might have led, I still had hope that with time, he might still assist you with your destiny one day.”

The camera slowly comes closer to Astor. We can see more clearly the type of stuff that sprawls the papers and books and diagrams across his office. Some depict stars and constellations, and even a few notes on Ancient Technology, although in a noticeably cleaner font. However, as the camera moves close and closer to Astor, the papers and books depict only one clear topic: the aura of death that comes only with necromancy.

Rhoam Narration: “It seems…”

Astor finally reacts to whatever he was doing on his desk. You don’t see his eyes, but as he fully turns around to face the camera, you see his smile, along with him holding a dark orb of unknown energy. It hovers in his hand.

Rhoam Narration: “...I was mistaken.”

The camera cuts to a wide angle, looking at Astor from behind a stack of books on his desk. The stack of books on Astor’s desk brighten in color (from the memory dull filter), until the scene fully fades back into the Royal Library. The camera is now focused on a similar stack of books on the desk behind Zelda, where Rhoam was working before.

Zelda is still looking at her father, who is still turned away. Now, he turns back around to face her.

“He had disappeared completely one day, so it was my understanding that whatever he was working on killed him. However, if he is truly back as you say…”

Rhoam walks closer to Zelda, close enough that he might have put a hand on her shoulder, but his arms stay behind his back.

“It is in your utmost interest to prove him wrong. I know not what he plans on doing, but it would be wise to stop him before he does.”

Rhoam turns away now, pacing back to the otherside of the desk. “But, your more important priority is unlocking your powers, understand? Now more than ever, is not the time to get distracted.”

Zelda, taking this all in, takes a deep breath. She then nods at him. “I understand...Father.”

After a moment, the King makes a motion as if to dismiss her. She starts to walk away, her thoughts churning in her head, heart thumping to the same beat as her echoing footsteps. Suddenly, Rhoam calls,

“Zelda.” It’s not a question, but the tone is asked like one.

She turns back, looking at him, expectantly. Rhoam only stares at her, an uncharacteristic moment of uncertainty for him. The words he wants to form seem stuck in his throat, until finally, he lets out a quiet breathe through his nose, before simply saying:
