You said it exactly— like we all know they're buddies and stick together, but most of the times, we don't really notice it because it's just natural. Nondescript even. Like of course their pixels are next to each other in the background. Of course they're hanging out. It's not flashy or anything, they're just there.

Pairing up

They're like those anime characters who are fully fleshed out individually, but for some reason, their screentime is tied together and they're always shown next to each other. That was actually my first impression of them back when I only watched Grian in HC6 lmao, every time Grian flew over the fantasy district he would casually go "that's False and Ren's bases" and my brain was like "hmm new names :) idk who they are but they stick together :)". Like you know when you're new to an unknown cast of people so you try to comprehend and memorise them as efficiently as possible? And so you start sorting the cast into duos / groups so it's easier to remember them? That was me trying to compartmentalize the hermits in HC6. Grian + Mumbo. Iskall + Stress. Scar + Cub. Joe + Cleo. ZIT. False + Ren.

It did not help that from Grian's POV, there was a part in the civil war arc when he collabed with False to prank Ren because they thought he'd pranked her and so my brain was like "weeewoooo I still don't know who False and Ren are but they continue stick together, and that's convenient for my internal sorting :)))". And that mutual association genuinely never stopped lmao (it only got worse).

Shared audiences?

I've talked about this on privtwt: False+Ren as a fanon duo (like duo Duo as in desert duo) is strangely niche even though they do stuff together all the time and they're both fairly popular on their own. And there is so much intermingling between their audiences— I know this is the case for all hermits' audiences, but it seems especially obvious between their audiences. I know in a stream Ren said he met up with False and they had a discussion like years ago about the two of them hosting a meet and greet with fans in a restaurant (that didn't happen) and internally I was like "yeah, that'll only work if they have a solidly integrated fanbase so no one feels left out in the restaurant WAIT. That's literally what's going on here".

Funny how when I was writing this, an anon sent an ask about Ren's chat basically being full of False emotes LOL. Integrated audience kinda real <3 like, even if you only watch one of them and don't actively watch the other, you still know and think of the other fondly.

Different styles? And sticking together

Actually outside of yayyy fun minigames, to me at least they have quite different styles + ways of presentation? Which feels slightly different from the above duos I mentioned? So I totally understand why people only main one of them and don’t watch the other (but still aware of the other obviously). In terms of taste and personal preference, I’ve been here long enough to know what loyal False mains generally like and what loyal Ren mains generally like. (Like, very verrrry generally.) Ren’s the dramatic roleplay storyteller and False is like, sneaky and shifty and has a wry sense of humour. They’re both funny and charming in different ways. I would say Iskall and Stress have similar presentations (“aha? AHA?”) even though they excel at different things. Cub and False are also similar to me— competent and cool people who are nonchalantly chaotic. And we all know Ren and Martyn’s instant chemistry and their similarities. It’s why a lot of Ren fans gravitated to Renchanting and Rendoc for their dramatics and flirting in the way some False fans gravitate to Fress and Falseren for the fun/mildly hysterical/teasing/sweet/pranking moments.

BUT

False and Ren bounce off each other well— it’s the playful tension and the sudden mutual whiny energy like “noooo don’t leave me🥺” but they start hitting each other 0.5 seconds later. And of course the mutual clinginess. I know people have made jokes about how they’re both smart and competent people individually but when they get together they suddenly become the silliest sillies and share one braincell <3 and I know people (read: mutuals in my DMs) have joked about Ren’s currently extremely obvious bias for her (it's as big as the BRR sign I swear 😭) and the usual “orbiting around each other group recordings”. Compared to other duos, they don’t get paired together bc of similar presentations / style. They get paired together because of the chemistry and they share so many moments lol.

Tldr: they make for entertaining on-screen interactions. It’s fun watching them rotate around each other and punch each other off things. And they do this so much that 1) everyone’s aware of it 2) everyone’s used to it.

Branding? (Or the lack of it)

Last I checked, their tag has 46 fics on Ao3 and 16 of those fics are from me (I love being spiders georg). As with every pair that's not the juggernaut pair, realistically the actual number of fics that actually focus on them is less than what we see. And you know how sometimes for the "niche" pairs, there's more ship fic than platonic fic? (Actually I think for most pairs, there's more ship fic than platonic fic.) That's also not it, they don't even have 20 ship fics. Like clearly, the current fanon interest in them is not ship motivated versus *gestures to whatever is happening in the general shipping chaos post 2021*.

What I concluded is that they lack the kind of branding that for example Convex possesses. I think it's kind of because... they're an ubiquitous constant throughout the years. They don't need a storyline or a named group to tie themselves together. No matter what they're doing, no matter what characters they're playing, no matter which servers they're on— they just kind of stay in each other's orbits. But they don't play it up or anything like hashtag SHIPrendoc or Renskall or whatever. They don't even have a proper fanon name ffs (outside of fairy pirate grotto or whatever in HC6).

(Although imo this is likely to avoid comphet irl shipping because God forbid a man and a woman are friends :))))) heteronormative irl shipping / truthing was an annoyance for years (pre the HC6 boom). But strangely enough, modern anti hermitshippers on Twitter rarely bring up the real problem of truthing in public comments and instead target people making Scarian fanart in a small corner or whatever. When many cases of Compulsory Heterosexuality literally exist in YouTube comments. But I digress.)

Ren and False are just there, pranking each other and basing together and playing five million minigames and being casually supportive of each other. Like, their biggest shared "storyline" that left a strong impression on fans / converted fans was probably MCC9. We all still talk about it today the way Ren and Martyn still talk about 3L Renchanting. And MCC9 was in 2020 when they'd already done a lot of stuff together prior to that (eg. literally being neighbours in HC6).

And the thing is, they do collab semi-frequently. In like every Hermitcraft season. In recent memory, we've got the Blue River Raceway of course, but we also get those pranks and minigames and random silly interactions like Ren breaking into False's eagle and False pranking him at her elytra race. It doesn't need to be big and theatrical in classic Ren fashion (I remember the Renbob / Falsewell storyline in HC6; her nonchalance and confusion was so funny in contrast to Renbob's hippie demeanor).

And I kind of like the way they've kind of (?? or not???) escaped from the intense duo-ification from the fandom. Okay, to be fair, I know I am the worst offender of the duo-ification of them (with my desperate do not separate agenda), and maybe I've had a negative effect on the fandom, so feel free to throw me off my soap box. I remember how hermitblr as a collective suddenly lost it when they split in MCC17. We took them for granted, we all got to used to them being together, we got used to seeing them in the background, and then suddenly they’re not??

So we’re all kind of aware of them. But it’s not a terribly big thing…. until it is.

It's the same on the M/CC Reddit. Everyone knows they're iconic. But nobody makes a post about how we need more False and Ren duo interactions because they already interact a lot. It's just a natural constant. They don't really need a spotlight because they're just... here doing funky cute friendship stuff.

But if they ever, for some reason, become a mainstream duo on twt in its mainstream duo way with some [insert random noun] duo name, I will be so 🫠😒🔥💥🔥💥. But I literally cannot see this happening unless they team with Grian / Grian adjacent people in Life series. But even then I think they’re kinda exempt because everyone’s so used to them lol. It’s not like a shiny new uwu duo. It’s like how Stresskall is just Stresskall. Or Jleo.

(Actually, speaking of Stresskall, the entire Stress-Iskall-Ren-False group would make for an interesting fanon discussion bc it’s essentially made out of very solid and fan favourite duos. But not now. Team FRIS my absolute beloved though.)

Also, thinking about the ensemble HC fics I've read and how they're just casually kind of chilling in the background. Ren is usually paired with Doc (both platonic / romantic) but False is usually somehow mentioned in a passing comment. Same with False who's usually with the Hermitgals in ensemble fics, but there's also passing comments about her hanging out with Ren. Again, it's just a natural part of the background. Trivia that's sprinkled in between.

And that's why I think I'm so 🥺🥺🥺🥺 because it doesn't need to be big and grand... it's all the little moments <3 they have such a fun and playful dynamic and all the love for minigames <3

I was in the tumblr tf fandom for a hot second a few years ago and i just wanted to ask, is it still really aggressive here? because back then there was a lot of shipping drama, there were a few callout posts going around (can't really remember about what) and just...a lot of bad stuff. I personally had someone tell me to kill myself because I liked one of the villains. guess I'm just wondering if, in your opinion, things have chilled out? Cuz I'd like to get back into it but I'm a little hesitant;;;

I'm going to try and give the fullest answer I can in the best faith to this! For context, this blog is a couple years old now, I have enough followers that I get a lot of active engagement on my posts etc, I am very active in TF fandom here, Twitter, and IRL, and while I did not used to be active I have been lurking in TF fandom as long as I have been on Tumblr.

There is absolutely still some toxicity; all fandoms have their bad faith actors, their drama hounds, their shipping Diskhorsers TM. I have gotten hate mail, I know folks who have issue with weird anon haters who are persistent, whatever. But no, it is not as bad as it has been in the past, IMO, not at ALL, and it is 100% possible to have an active, sociable and nice time in this fandom so long as you curate your engagement, with basically no drama at all. Many of the worst folks burned out and left when the fandom got less active and their shitstirring paid lesser and lesser dividends, IME.

People sometimes ask how I maintain such a vocal presence without falling into the still-there drama, and I have some advice that I promise you will mitigate like, 99% of the possible issues you could encounter:

Block whenever you feel like blocking. If you get a bad vibe, if you just don't personally like someone and don't wanna see them, if you see them throwing what looks like a temper tantrum you don't want in on, just block 'em. Remember: blocking is nothing personal towards the person you are blocking. It is not insulting and doesn't need to be 'earned'. Block every single person you think not blocking might even just theoretically cause stress or drama. (I am blocked by several people for reasons no more serious than 'I hate your OTP', and I commend every one of them for doing it and having a better time on this site!)

Delete any and all anon hate. Block anyone and everyone who sends you hate. No exceptions. No witty comebacks. No takedowns. Nothing. You see it and the actual literal second you do, you block and delete. None of it is worth one second of your time. Deprived of the oxygen, they will leave. And you won't be tempted to re-read it and stress out.

In that same vein, if it causes issues, just turn anon off! Turn it off. Personally I keep it on because I simply do not care about the odd troll, but if you care even slightly? Fuck 'em, turn it off, anon is a privilege your followers need to earn by acting in good faith.

Find people you like and follow them, ignore blatant shitstirring in the maintags (again: block people!) and try to curate content and follows and mutuals based on what you do like and not what you don't. Curate positive engagement; do not rely on the general fandom slurry, find what you like and hang out in your own corner of things that bring you joy. If the maintag stresses you out: don't check it. Check the blogs of folks you know are cool instead. Stuff like that.

Fandom should be fun. Fandom should be finding people you like and sharing good times with them, not stressing about avoiding folks you hate, or who hate you. Tumblr lets you moderate how you engage, when, and where more than almost any current social media site; now you can even turn off reblogs and oh my GOD is that a lifesaver function btw. If you want, you can make your blog unsearchable! It means you will need to be more proactive in making friends. But TF fandom is pretty tight knit these days, and folks want to talk a lot of the time. You'll still be able to engage with cool people.

There's way less aggro losers around these days, but more to the point, you can absolutely avoid the ones that still insist on being annoying and starve them out without much effort, tbh.

hey what the hell is this

this is a poll bracket for all the distinct story arcs in transformers comics More than Meets the Eye/Lost Light, and exists because when polls were introduced to tumblr i spent ages trying to work out how to fit the arcs into one poll, to try and find out which one folks on here like best overall. anyway, i eventually realized you can't do that, so now we're doing it tournament bracket style. this blog will have five rounds of polls between thirty-four distinct story arcs across the full run of the comic.

okay, so how does it work??

i went through the tfwiki articles for every issue, and made some judgement calls on what counts as a distinct "story/story arc" in the comics. many of these are very clear, a few are slightly more subjective (e.g. whether certain issues count as preludes to a labelled arc or are their own thing) so i guess everyone just has to put up with my ultimate judgement call on this, sorry.

anyway: two or three arcs will go up against each other in each round, and the winner progresses to the next round. in the interests of trying to keep things interesting, these matchups are not random, but realistically i had no way to "truly" seed them since there's no nomination round. i've done my best to try and make some qualitative judgements on observed popularity of arcs to keep things balanced and avoid all the good shit going down in round one.

Actually just remember i wanted to drop my current fanfic project on you because you dropped your au ideas on me basically i am writing a fwhimmy story! its during the hermit crossover and fwhip finds out about the ranchers! the story is about him befriending tango and also mainly about heartbreak and getting over it and like finding friends in someone you didnt know would be friends with you. I havent decided yet how it ends for fwhimmy but yes main relationships are jimmy/tango, fwhip/jimmy and tango&fwhip as friends and its hurt/comfort and unrequited love atm and i love it I have drafted 8 chapters now and honestly the friendship between tango and fwhip is like main focus current working name for the fic is "wont cry for you" (pls dont maintag this)

he has to rationalize these requests tho, just telling him to do something won't work, he's gotta give a reason

cus our boy isn't dumb , he isn't a mindless zombie he calls out how stupid it would be to "go stand outside for 15 seconds" but all "Wilbur" has to do to convince him is give him a semi believable reason to do the task like "you need some fresh air, you've been playing videogames all day" or smt

*keeps getting constant calls asking dumb shit, Wilbur claims he didn't do anything when he calls him

*growing distrust for Wilbur as "Wilbur" tests his Control over him more and more

* tommy suspects that "Wilbur" isn't really wilbur, but the sustained illusion that the spirit keeps up gets stronger every day so the suspicion gets stored in the back of his mind most of the time

* the feeling of uneasiness caused by the suspicion gets warped into fear by "Wilbur", he's already got enough control over him to know he won't just run away, so now the fear serves to keep him obeying more and more ridiculous commands

*this back fires however, when wilbur (the real guy) notices how tommys been acting super strange, Specially around him

*"Wilbur" leads tmmy to a park at night and ends up basically mind controlling him to kill someone , then tell him to go home while he "cleans the mess" <- i drew smt for the murder scene once cus I'm normal like that

*tommy goes home and has a breakdown in the shower while trying to wash the blood of his clothes <- that one drawing i made and didn't maintag

*as Tommy gets more and more afraid and paranoid Wilbur starts to seriously think that something is wrong, not only is he weird around him but he also doesn't answer calls, refuses to leave his apartment half the time, and when he is seen he looks as if he hasn't slept in weeks

his empty stare occasionally is replaced by fear when he spots Wilbur

*he goes to the beach that same week, vaguely aware of the world around him he stares into the sea, there he meets an old lady, he tells her he's been struggling to sleep lately (not a lie technically, but he doesn't remember what exactly the truth is..)

the old lady guides him to her van with the promise to help him, there she asks for a lock of his hair and hands him a weird looking doll

tommy is absolutely delighted with the doll! the static in his ears seemed to dull down as soon as he was holding it

he then goes home and sleeps until the next day with no calls to interrupt him

*tommy excitedly calls tubbo to tell him about his new doll "uncle nasty" and how it's been helping him thru "all the shit that's been going down" tubbos confused, but glad that Tommy's doing good now

he asks tommy what exactly has been "going down" tommy goes quiet for a second, he claims that he doesn't really know, and that everything's been super fuzzy lately "probably just the lack of sleep.. nothing to worry about! not now that I've got uncle nasty!" he tells tubo the story of how he got it

that's where tubbo starts getting really worried, they keep talking as normal for a few minutes

*tubbo tells Wilbur about this, specially the doll, Wilbur thinks he's figured it out

assuming that the doll is haunted and it's the one causing tommy those issues, determined to help his friend he starts a plan to get rid of the doll no matter what

*as Tommy starts getting better he starts hanging out with Wilbur again, having almost forgotten about the calls and the spirit, Wilbur uses the time he gets with tommy to try and convince

him to throw the doll out.

meanwhile the spirit was planning something big, big enough to regain full control over tommy and break the barrier that old woman had set up (the lady is nice she noticed our boy was being haunted and helped him ^^)

* tommy starts getting calls again, weirdly only when he's out on walks/ hanging out, (CUS HE LEVAES THE DOLL IN THE HOUSE) "Wilbur" talks to him and starts to rebuild this influence slowly while he tears at the barrier bit by bit

*BIG EVENT number 2 lOL!!! it's the Halloween stream it's the Halloween stream basically anyways

tommy is invited to tubbos epic sleepover Halloween stream, he gets a call from "Wilbur" midway thru, telling him to kill aimsey, tommy successfully refuses this time! good for him

the stream plays out as you remember, he comes back completely unresponsive and disturbed until the influence wears off and he goes to clean his hair

you certainly did nothing wrong with the azula post. it was properly tagged and didn't cross tag into actual ships. it's just how the biphobes are. when i was younger, i had once tried to run a blog not engaging in discourse but simply supporting headcanons, and i still constantly got hateful messages and threats for going against 'canon' even though they all but had to go out of their way to find my blog, if i remember right i hadn't even maintagged anything. it's long since deleted by now though, and i never saved any receipts, so take it with a grain of salt i suppose. needless to say, i understand your story and i believe you acted rationally. the one who brought it back up after you de-escalated and left the conversation was incredibly childish and seems to be a reoccurring situation in general with this type of thing.

i do wonder how much of it is tied into other discourses, i most frequently see this kind of behavior with antis. i wouldn't be surprised at all if some proshippers did the same. there's a lot to be said in general about exclusionism and the treatment of bi folk (many gay people wish for us to water ourselves down to nothing more than gay and lesbian, just with a different word. seems to lineup a lot with anti-aro/ace and forcing nonbinary people into binaries ie transmasc or transfem, denying the existence of transneutrality and pressuring them into outing themselves, or the usage of amab and afab in casual discussion rather than medical contexts or other cases where it's actually relevant) a lot of it all seems to circle right back into radfem ideology. unfortunately, a prevalent ideology even in fandom spaces.

thank you, again, for sharing one of your stories. i have never harassed anyone either, over anything, much less headcanons. it seems incredibly common that people will take someone disagreeing with their headcanon as a personal attack. you can say you don't mind a lesbian or gay headcanon, but prefer a bi one, and people will still get mad. it's unfortunate. thankfully, we have stubborn bi people who'll hold their ground even through the harassment and poor treatment. i hope you'll hold tight onto your bi azula headcanon, and every other bi headcanon you have. i'll be doing the same for mine.

I'm always made to feel like I'm doing something wrong by reacting accordingly to the disrespect, and I'm sure I'm not alone in that either.

I really think that you're absolutely right in some of these other points you brought up. Namely it being a common theme in online spaces now that people are just plain immature and rehash arguments for no reason... but also I think you're onto something about this tying into other types of discourse, and certainly aphobia and enbyphobia as well. These types of discrimination (biphobia, aphobia, enbyphobia) are pretty socially acceptable, sadly, even in queer or majority queer fandom spaces... it sucks. And we're not the only ones who've noticed it either.

You're also 100% right about people in general treating disagreement like a personal attack. You say you have a different headcanon and they act like you ran over their dog -__-

3. What ideas come from when you were little

SO MANY OF THEM!!! I had this idea where an entire class replaced themselves with robots and also I remember getting really upset that everyone kept on talking about Harry Potter (I was in like. g2 and I didn't know about the terf stuff yet but it was fucking everywhere) and also this one classmate I had kept making horror stories about the school so I just drew the monsters having fun together in a school a lot

so it just occurred to me that one of the reasons why the host of the Noldor following Fingolfin were, on the whole, ready to forgive Maedhros was that they were already deeply invested in the idea that suffering brings absolution.

The people that struggled across the Helcaraxe see themselves as wronged: the Kinslaying at Alqualonde is not their sin, their hands are (mostly) clean, they are righteous in their anger, they were betrayed.  (Let us not ask about how many of them would have sailed on the stolen ships.)  They have paid in blood and toil, their suffering shrives them (it does not; Finrod learns this).

Maedhros stood aside at Losgar, he suffered mightily at the hands of Morgoth, his suffering shrives him (it does not; Maedhros, and all Middleearth, learn this).

The thing is, I think: this suffering does buy something.   But it is only partial coin, and the fatal mistake of the Noldor in Middleearth is to mistake the partial coin for the whole.

"Hate" is a strong word, but I will admit that it bothers me a little seeing you dump so much on Bug Fables' worldbuilding and aesthetic choices and whatever every chance you get because it feels like you're judging the game for something that it's not: like, Mario games don't focus as much on their lore as Kirby games do, but I won't get mad at Mario for it. It's fine that Bug Fables went for simpler stuff with its story or didn't want to be 100% biologically accurate to real life Bug Stuff.1/3

Side note, these types of discussions have kind of soured my opinion on Hollow Knight (not much, just slightly) because it feels like fans of that game really want Bug Fables to be the same thing when I feel they share no traits, even as "Bug Games": Hollow Knight's "Bugs" seem to be mostly just guys with vaguely bug-like elements. It'd be like expecting Star Fox and Kirby to be more similar because "they both involve animals and space", when the capacity they both do is entirely different. 2/3

oooo my first multi-ask anon. hello and thanks for taking the time to send this all in! i’ll try my best to respond to things in a clear and understandable way, though i cannot promise to be concise. :P

I’m actually not dumping on bug fables every chance I get, though I understand why you’d think that. I am much more positive and engaged with the fun and/or positive stuff in a couple servers on discord. I save the more critical stuff for tumblr where I’m just talking to the void of my own blog and people don’t have to engage if they don’t want to. You’ll hopefully have noticed that I don’t maintag most of my more critical/negative ramblings, and that’s intentional, as I’m not trying to garner attention or talk at the bf community at large. I’m just throwing my thoughts on my little blog here that some people have elected to follow.

I cannot say much about the mainstream game series and their depths of lore that you’ve brought up, as I’m not much of a gamer and don’t engage in or keep up with all that. I used to play some of the Mario games at a previous point in my life, but I don’t remember enough to discuss the lore or worldbuilding in much detail. 

I have no idea how deep kirby lore is or even what the star fox games are about. I do, however, know about what breaks my immersion in a game, and I speak more from a storytelling perspective than from a “this game should be like that game” perspective. No, Bug Fables isn’t Hollow Knight, and I don’t want it to be. I like Hollow Knight for being Hollow Knight, and I like Bug Fables for being Bug Fables.

However, Bug Fables gives me the impression, both from the game and from the extra materials/discussion from the devs, that the intention was of a more developed world with cool and sometimes edgy lore, with culture and history and consequence. And the reason I agreed earlier with someone when they said that the world feels kinda empty and why I express the wish that this game had had another draft before being complete is because to me is because it rather clearly was trying to be more than the light-hearted funny bug game. It looks to me like the devs had some cool ideas, but they weren’t effectively implemented/ integrated into the game that we bought and played. I express my dissatisfaction because I can see the potential and I’m disappointed that I came away unfulfilled. 

Again, I like the game. I’ve been engaged in the bf community for over two years. Do you really think I’d still replay the game, discuss it, draw fanart for it, make OCs, etc. if i didn’t still enjoy the game, the concepts, and the community? If I disliked this game so much, I wouldn’t have recommended it to my friends, and I wouldn’t post about when I see the game go on sale for anyone interested to purchase and play. I would’ve shut up and walked away and not constantly checked the maintag to see what people were saying and drawing that related to it and sharing the art I like and liking the takes I enjoy.

Hmm. I think there’s been a misunderstanding on the OC bit, though I can’t tell if it’s on your end or mine, though it could also be both. I’ll try to clarify, and if that’s not what you were trying to address, you’re welcome to send another ask.

I think you misinterpreted my statement about not being fond of characters who feel like NPCs as meaning I don’t like characters that fit in. I was using NPC as a negative, however, as OCs Who Feel Like NPCs to me feel less developed, less like they’re characters and more that they’re just present to make the world look lived in and maybe provide a service. I have OCs like this! I’m speaking first and foremost about my own NPC-OCs! I don’t like that they’re like this, but I find it challenging to develop them further when, well, -gestures at the worldbuilding dissatisfaction expressed in the above paragraphs- 

I greatly enjoy characters that fit into the world they’re made for! I love when people take a small aspect of established society or some job mentioned once and make a character out of it, and flesh out and explore that vague aspect of the world. I love it when they get accidental development because their creator learns something new about their species or the relevant lore, and now suddenly there’s more to do with the character.

There’s also the opposite of NPC-energy characters. If a character is too different, very overpowered, or otherwise stands out too much, then it’s hard for me to engage with them and feel like they’re part of the world they were purportedly made for. This is all very subjective, as the criteria for “fitting in” are going to be different for everyone. I’m not saying don’t make your super mega powerful god that can smite all of the kingdom by pointing at it, but I personally don’t want to engage with that character, either OOC or within a character interaction. If you enjoy making crazy wacky powerful characters and horror-beasts and divine children that are the result of five gods banging in a cloud, then you’re welcome to do so. I don’t understand the appeal, and it won’t feel like those characters “fit” to me, but I’m not your mother or your boss. I just won’t interact.

This is my personal blog where I share personal feelings. I often write my posts without elaborating or thinking too carefully about what I’m saying or how it’ll be interpreted. That’s part of why I tag those posts with #rambling. They’re just rambles. I’m not going to write an essay about everything that I think about. I just jot down thoughts and drop them in the hole that is tumblr, and if somebody picks them up and wants to say something or share them around, then that’s on them.

You have the power, at least to the extent that the website/ Internet allows you, to control your online experience, and I support you in that endeavor.

Dealing with Antis

Turn off anon on your askbox. The harassment will dry up fast.

Enable comment moderation on your fics.

Get over your discomfort around the block button and use it liberally. It will protect you.

Keep an eye out for the warnings signs. Vaguely TERFy arguments, erasure of bisexual characters, referring to the AO3 in a disparaging or insulting way, posts that vaguely refer to Bad People in fandom without elaborating, statements about how Good People ship this specific thing so they’re good, etc. Block them all.

Stay out of the maintags, but follow personal blogs. Expand the network; if you see one of your mutuals reblogging a cool person a lot, go follow that person.

Don't try to debate an anti. They care more about fictional characters than living, breathing people, and they will use any public show of contention as a rallying cry. Once an anti knows you'll debate one of them, they'll sic the whole group on you.

Spread positivity whenever you can. Leave good tags on art and meta you reblog. Comment on every fic you like. Antis foster an atmosphere of fear and hopelessness, in which people stop wanting to participate because what's the point? The point is that antis are a vocal minority, and we're greater than them.

Make fandom what you want it to be.

If you start to wonder if you’re the bad guy, if you really are a terrible person, remember these are people who have singled out mostly female and queer creators with no support systems, with no clout. They focus on small creators because they have a better chance to silence you than a mainstream creator that has actual influence on culture. Because it’s not about you being a bad guy. It’s about how good it feels to be outraged and to win. They don’t give a shit about helping anyone. And you’re better than them.

And in the end, if you absolutely have to engage with antis, I recommend being as fucking vicious as possible. Because I've been a passive observer and an active participant in this shit, and I can tell you true that being nice to antis doesn't matter. They already see you as Dirty and Gross, they have already dehumanized you. So fuck them up.
