tagged by @fake-colors to list five songs I'm into rn!
The Betty and Barney Hill abduction and several other UFO events occurred not far from where I live. In Betty and Barney's case, a lot of people claim that the stress of living as an interracial couple in a majority white area caused them to hallucinate a folie à deux. As I get older, I find explanations like that insulting. There is so much we don't know in this world. This song is a nice tribute to these people who got fucked over in multiple ways.
This song is on my new playlist for Scallop-- like this song, Scallop's story is a bildungsroman. The strings on this song are devastating.
This is on my playlist for Jacques (my OC/weird brain ghost guy). I have an idea for an animatic using this. It really sums up who he is as a person in the context of his story-- repressed femme, miserable hag, traumatized boy.
If you like lyrical, theatrical, pop punk inspired music (and if you're on Tumblr you probably do), and you DON'T listen to Jhariah, man, you're missing out! I like their voice and flow better than a lot of similar artists in the scene. If you look into the inspiration for their albums it's really clever and funny too.
Devin Morrison is a great producer and these synthy, saxy, instrumental R&B tracks seem to be his passion project. I have been listening to them to fall asleep. I really like the world they evoke, and how seamlessly they blend nostalgia with innovation. They're all good, but this one in particular reminds me of a patient information channel on a hospital TV.
I will tag @creativeimpetus @sucre-sanguine @awarmshrine @battysoda and anyone else who wants to do it! :>b

sometimes life is tumultuous rage and grief and I am drowning/there is no sign of land/you are coming down with me/hand in unlovable hand/and i hope you die/i hope we both die
and other times life is blossoming joy and connection and home is where you've called my name/I've gone as far as the eye can blame/you said love may have lost its way

2021 in review
My favorite thing about the end of the year is making itemized lists
Top 10 discovered songs (note: not necessarily 2021 releases although some of them are)
August - Flipturn
Like You Do - Joji
Cure for Me - AURORA
I Don't Wanna Talk (I Just Wanna Dance) - Glass Animals
Peas - BOYLIFE
Buzzcut - BROCKHAMPTON
Be Sweet - Japanese Breakfast
Reflections - The Neighbourhood
Lose Your Head - London Grammar (shout out also to Dave glass animals' remix of this song; this sounds like a bit but Dave glass animals is legitimately how he credited himself lol)
WESTWORLD - Evan Giia
Top 10 2021 album drops
Roadrunner: New Light, New Machine - BROCKHAMPTON (it is a truth universally acknowledged that a year in which BH drops a new album is a year in which that album will be at the top of Sarah's list. This is just what happens)
Montero - Lil Nas X (if BH hadn't dropped an album though this would absolutely have been album of the year. Can u guys believe this dropped in September it feels like I've been listening to this album my entire life)
A Beginner's Mind - Sufjan Stevens & Angelo de Augustine
Dandelion - The Greeting Committee (my penance for cutting Ada from my list of songs which caused me actual physical pain)
Jubilee - Japanese Breakfast
Collapsed in Sunbeams - Arlo Parks
Sometimes I Might Be Introvert - Little Simz
Down and Out in the Garden of Earthly Delights - Geographer
A Force Majeure - Tora
Terra Firma - Tash Sultana
(This year I didn't watch that many things at all shdjdhfjdjdjd so I am combining my movies and tv show seasons into one list, some movies not released in 2021 but I'm pretty sure all the tv seasons are at least partial 2021 releases)
Top 10 movies/tv seasons
Your Name Engraved Herein dir. Liu Kuang Hui
Soul dir. Pete Docter
Dimension 20 (I know this is an actual play show buT IT COUNTS OKAY. my favorite d20 season is The Unsleeping City which dropped in 2019 but they did release five seasons this year and The Seven is definitely in my top three as well)
Druck: season 6 (I mean come on)
Minari dir. Lee Isaac Chung
The Mitchells versus The Machines dir. Mike Rianda
What We Do in the Shadows: season 3
Reservation Dogs: season 1
Pose: season 3
Raya and the Last Dragon dir. Don Hall and Carlos Lopez Estrada

11, 20, 42!!
11. what album came out and has been on heavy rotation since then?
oooh i feel like this is a few but probably the big winner would be japanese breakfast’s “jubilee.” it’s making all the end of 2021 best of listicles for a reason, just like such a solid album, perfect for a full listen, and i was lucky enough to see her perform it on tour last fall. and it came out on my birthday! :-)
also obviously angelo de augustine + sufjan stevens “a beginner’s mind.” i feel like for me more of the impact of that album had to do with the build up to it and getting to hear sufjan + angelo do the press circuit together. loved getting to hear them talk about movies and all that, obviously the album is incredible and deserves all its accolades too. i think jubilee is a slightly stronger album but they’re both great and really definitive 2021 listens for me.
20. did you develop a new obsession?
i’ll say sort of? i got closer with someone who i considered more of an acquaintance at best who went to high school with one of my college friends, and we started watching just a ton of movies together (mostly over discord, then irl once vaccines rolled around). i wouldn’t say i’m like “obsessed” with anything we watched, but it was really nice to have someone to share all that with. i definitely don’t know enough to be like a Film Girl™️ but i watched way more movies this year than i have in a while.
42. what are you most proud of accomplishing?
a few things! i did a couple art fairs this year and got back into that as a practice, which feels really good. painting and making art in general feels like something i can just sit down and do, and feels like a regular part of my life in a way that i haven’t felt for a while, or at least since college and having access to studio spaces. currently selling my stuff in a small gallery right now, which is wild to me to have checks coming in each month specifically because people are buying my work. (not looking forward to doing taxes this year though lmao)
other than that, been seeing a therapist regularly for the first time in my adult life (historically i’ve had a tendency to ghost after a couple sessions). it’s not perfect but it helps and has given me a lot of tools to handle things better than i have in the past.
and picking guitar up again! took lessons in middle + high school, quit like 10 years ago, been re-learning it for a little over a year now. i’m still very bad at it but it’s really satisfying to work at it and hear myself get better over time.

8:31am Woke up after a couple dreams. I’m going to watch church from home this morning, I’m still not ready to go in person. Feeling a little anxious about just watching online but still looking forward to it. I did the quick breathing exercise through Headspace this morning and it was alright. I also watched the beginning of the video called the wake up and it was about mindfully using technology. The action I made after watching was to turn off notifications for some apps, like Facebook. I’ll look forward to their Sunday Scaries podcast today.
8:38am I’ve been enjoying and seeing benefits from breathing exercises. I think it helps me relax and practice mindfulness. Mindfulness can help me manage stress and anxiety and learn self awareness about how I think. I’m learning to study how it feels to breathe. I might come back to thinking about this
8:43 am going to turn on Sirius XMU. Tenderness by Jay Som was on when I turned on the radio. I find this radio station to be nice to listen to because the DJs are chill and interesting and know their music. Don’t mean to turn this into an ad, but it’s ok, this is just a journal entry. Calling this an ad is a bit excessive, just noting that I found a radio station I like.
8:50am Kind of looking forward to the day. Momentarily felt a bit stressed out. Journaling does help. I kind of want to learn more about the benefits of journaling so I can better make use of the practice. I currently mainly use it to catalog my thoughts, but it would be nice to dig deeper into stuff and maybe find some material for art.
8:55am I can tell I’m conscious that I’ll be posting this online. I kind of wish that wasn’t the case and I could just share my thoughts but it’s ok, it’s a learning experience to share like this. Anyway, it’s time to get set up for church online.
12:05pm Ate some leftover pizza this noon, I was hungry but now I feel better. Bible class after church should be interesting this year, about the book of Revelation. I’ll be interested to learn about it.
Started listening to XMU again just now, a good Sunday activity. I’m going to try reading Refuse by Julian Randall. I’ve been looking forward to reading it but expect it to be kind of intense. Thinking about going to get a coffee in Minneapolis before the Vikings game. We’ll see what happens, I have chores to do too.
12:44pm Read a few poems from the beginning of the book. I put it down and am still listening to the radio. Clairo is on, the song Sophia. It’s kind of an intense book and I wasn’t really feeling affected by it very fully, but maybe I don’t have to in the first reading. Yeah, I really like listening to the radio as a Sunday activity, I find it relaxing. Texting my mom now. She’s preparing for teachers conference today and going to watch the Vikings play. She reminded me of exercise and going to the gym. That would be a good self-care practice too. Maybe I’ll go for a walk. I think I’ve decided I’ll go into Minneapolis for that coffee before the game. Now listening to Rae Street by Courtney Barnett. I like the song.
3:55pm watching the Vikings game and it’s on commercial. I did end up getting coffee in Minneapolis. Feeling a little tired. I should do some chores while I watch.
7:23pm While watching the game, I did a few chores which was productive. I also went on my phone during the game and explored the Headspace app. One thing I did was learn about chronotypes. It is defined in your DNA and determines your best schedule for productivity throughout the day. I am a bear which is the most common of four types. I could still learn more about what it actually means. It is mainly related to a sleeping and eating schedule. I’ll get the name of the guy who talked about this in a book I haven’t read called the Power of When. The guy is Dr. Michael Breus for what it’s worth. Kind of interesting to me. Related is my experience trying to be more mindful about how I have settings in my phone. I took off notifications for a few apps including Facebook which has been nice. I haven’t cared about Facebook alerts in quite a while. Related to Headspace, I also listened to the Sunday Scaries podcast episode from today. It’s a short podcast with a short breathing exercise and helpful tips for the coming week. This time was an introduction basically to the work I’ve been doing using the app for working through anxiety. It’s just the start, but it’s encouraging to think about how far I’ve come in that Headspace program. I still have a ways to go to get mindfulness to help even more with anxiety, and using breathing exercises as well.
One other thing I did during the game was start shopping for a car which is not a task I enjoy really. It’ll be fun to update my ride lol but also used car prices have risen and it’s uncertain if they’ll go back down. I’ll try to keep looking regularly for several weeks.
Listening to the radio again while journaling. That thought interrupted my line of thinking about the Headspace app, and I’m trying to navigate how much of this journaling will be stream of consciousness. Sometimes my thoughts can get somewhat scatterbrained which isn’t helpful for a blog. Normally in my private journal I let the thoughts be scatterbrained because that is true stream of consciousness and it’s fun to see how the stream of consciousness works. I think I’ll experiment with and without editing related thoughts together in different posts and see what feels better. I found the need to organize placement of topics here a bit, while maintaining integrity of the writing for the most part.
Lying in my bed rn and journaling on my phone. That’s my normal setup. This song by PJ Harvey is kind of hot lol. It’s called Rid of Me. Self conscious that I’m basically an ad for this radio station but also the songs in this blog post could be a decent playlist so there’s that. On that note I’m excited to listen to the new collaborative album between Sufjan Stevens and Angelo de Augustine. I like what I’ve heard by way of introduction so far.
I went for a walk after the Vikings’ win. It was nice getting outside. I momentarily felt anxious about the coming week, but remembered to return my focus to the present moment which helped. It is now 8:00 so I’ve been at this a while.
8:50 My phone died so I took the opportunity to watch CNBC Street Signs (Asia) and fold clothes, I was surprised by my energy to do a chore. After I finished that, I realized it wouldn’t take long to clean the bathroom so I did most of that quickly too. Quite pleased I could get those things done. I also got laundry done today too, so pretty productive. Cleaning your space can be part of self care, so it’s good to do that. Exercise is part of it as well, so it’s good I got a walk.
9:02pm I should do the next Headspace exercise. They have been relaxing this past week.
9:24pm I finished the tenth and last session in part two of the course on managing anxiety. I do feel a sense of accomplishment even though it took a while to get through it. I was consistent in the last week or so and the sessions went well. I’m looking forward to the next ten sessions. They’ll talk about framing the exercise to get the most out of it.I think I’m going to leave it here and watch some of the Circle on Netflix which is a show that makes me laugh. I didn’t do much more with art/poetry today but I managed to stay in the present moment pretty well and not worry about the coming week. I hope any readers have a good night and start to the week.

Audio
It’s that time again! I’ve recently gotten really into making these ten-track playlists that have an overall theme/emotion, and this is no exception! As I did on Christmas day last year with a similar playlist entitled “C1″ this is my first playlist of this format for the 2021 year! Noticing a pattern with the playlist titles? Yeah, me too! Keep in mind, this isn’t a tier list, I essentially tried to just make an album out of ten random songs, so their placement is entirely based on how they flow into each other both musically and thematically!
This time, I tried to provide an actual explanation for each track and why I put it on the playlist. Forgive me if I ramble or say stupid stuff sometimes, that’s just how I am!!
1. Song of Trouble - CARM (feat. Sufjan Stevens)
If you scroll through my page for more than five seconds, you’ll find that I’m a pretty huge fan of Sufjan. This track came out yesterday, as a matter of fact, and is the song that inspired me to make this playlist! I love CARM’s soothing horns for the first forty-ish seconds, which leads right into the muted piano and Sufjan’s beautiful voice! I also found out that the lead singer in the band Hippo Campus does some of the background vocals in this track, which is an interesting fact!
2. To You Alone (Acoustic) - Tom Rosenthal
Something about this dude’s voice is just really great to me. I don’t know a whole lot about the track. But have been listening to this song very frequently for the past week or so, and thought this would be a great follow-up to the previous track in terms of sound and such. Also, the last lyric of the song “How do we get to the sky?” absolutely crushes my soul every time I hear it.
3. It’s Working - MGMT
I have always been a fan of MGMT’s first album, but it wasn’t until about November 2020 that I started getting into their other projects (Little Dark Age, Congratulations, Self-Titled). I loved the idea of following up “To You Alone” with this track, cause it starts so suddenly with a faster tempo and stronger energy, I thought it’d act as a great jump-scare type situation. Also, it just sounds really awesome! You can really hear the 60s/70s inspirations in this song, and I’ve been listening to it a lot recently!
4. Rhythm of Devotion - Sisyphus
I don’t blame you if you’ve never heard of Sisyphus before, the one-shot trio released their self-titled in 2014 (Son Lux, Serengeti, and Sufjan Stevens) as a mix of Rap, IDM/Electronic, and Indie Pop. Don’t let the first two minutes keep you away from this song! After the brash beginnings of the track bring excitement and mild confusion, it all comes together around the 2:47 point, and only gets better from there! I love this entire album, but this track seems to be the most significant out of them all.
5. Gilgamesh - Sufjan Stevens
Yes, the first song actually made entirely by Sufjan! I know there’s a fair amount of him in this playlist, but this track really serves to bring back the emotional capacity of the first two tracks while keeping the Electronic/IDM style! A track about the epic of Gilgamesh that loosely connects with the artist’s own life, as he loses the person he cares about the most on a quest for immortality (Metaphors, much?)
6. San Clemente Glass House - Matt Easton
There’s a few versions of this track available on the internet, but the one with the guitar piece is absolutely the most required version out of them. A song about a troubled relationship and, what I can only assume, the “glass house” being a metaphor for himself. I love listening to this song when I’m feeling quietly dramatic, haha.
7. Middle of Nowhere - Vancouver Sleep Clinic
I have been a huge fan of this guy since he released Closure, and I’ve always loved his more chill tracks since then. This song is a relatively new release, from December. I haven’t really done a whole lot of analyzation with the lyrics, but from what I’ve considered so far it seems to be a lot about death and feeling inadequate (”And then I'll write a few songs that just go nowhere, Like this one”), like you haven’t lived up to your expectations and wish you could live “In the middle of nowhere”.
8. Blue - Angelo De Augustine
A song that, once again, I haven’t analyzed too deeply. He sings of how “All my life I’ve been so low, I don’t know why”, and how his father left his mother when he was five. Angelo has been a favourite of mine for quite awhile, and this song cements that even further!
9. Dawn Chorus - Thom Yorke
The frontman for the band Radiohead, Thom Yorke, released this track in the album ANIMA in 2019. The ethereal simplicity in the track along with Yorke’s spoken-work lyrics provide a deeply sad perspective on trying again, (”If you could do it all again, big deal, so what?”). Interestingly, despite the depressing nature of essentially delivering the idea that change is impossible and that second chances are futile, it seems to also come around to the idea that changing oneself is possible and to keep moving forward. Absolute simplistic masterpiece of a track.
10. My Rajneesh - Sufjan Stevens
Oh boy, here we go, another one of this guy!!! If you aren’t familiar with the name Rajneesh, he was essentially a spiritual/religious leader who created a settlement in Oregon back in the 1980s. However, this track seems to be focusing on Rajneesh himself, and his obsession with the Divine and power, to the point of fault (”You stare at the sun to see the sublime, forgetting the light that makes you go blind”). As his followers looked to him for spiritual awakening, they were blinded and could not see his faults (Fun Fact! This cult also committed the largest bioterrorism attack in US history). I could probably go on about this track for at least another few paragraphs, but want to keep this concise, haha. If you want to know more about all that fun stuff, there’s a Netflix original documentary series about it called “Wild Wild Country”.
And that’s about it for this playlist! I’m starting to get more interested in making these playlists, so you might be able to expect more in the coming weeks/months! If you actually read all that nonsense, thank you!

TheSeaVoices Drawing Playlist
A mixture of drawing moods, themes and favourites, not necessarily relevant lyric-wise but all very carefully selected for zero frustration - maximum flow, and perhaps an element of sexiness?
If you want a 43 track playlist for drawing or painting to - this works :)
-
1- Wallowa Lake Monster, Sufjan Stevens
Fucking love the fucking lyrics! Beautiful story and atmosphere and voice. I hadn’t listened to Sufjan much before watching Call Me By Your Name and just caning Visions of Gideon for weeks after.
2- Experiment In Terror, Henry Mancini
From the 60’s noir thriller of the same name - so stylish and cool - what a soundtrack sir! I love the slow threat and slinkiness.
3- My Body, Perfume Genius
Similar slink here, dirty kind of glide. Have seen PG a couple of times live and just ABSORBED it into my soul - he dances up there like a beautiful table-dancer and the crowd is moving with him - always good albums to paint to.
4- Danke Schoen, Wayne Newton
Turn this way up! 21 year old Wayne blasts this out like a genius - his voice is amazing and so feminine. I know it from Ferris Bueller's Day Off originally where it is put to very good use.
5- My Little Brown Book, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane
I can listen to Duke Ellington all day every day, those brushy cymbals in this are so lazy cool. That’s the third sixties song so far.
6- One More Kiss Dear, Vangelis
Bladerunner, one of my favourite films.  WHAT A FUCKING SOUNDTRACK! This song was an accidental recording sung for the demo by Don Percival (not the intended singer) and the weird spooky vocal just worked for the mock vintage sound.
7- Verbarhemiopia, Ed Dowie
Released through Lost Map Records. I know these people and they always have great acts - I had a lot of exceptional experiences on the Inner Hebridean island of Eigg with them. This track is just a beautiful, pulsing moonbeam.
8- Just Like Honey, The Jesus and Mary Chain
Such a sleazy, druggy, sexy song - dirty guitar and sensual drums - the opening drum intro, borrowed from (another 60’s track), Be My Baby by The Ronettes coming up on this list at number 38.
9- Grid, Perfume Genius
I rec the video!
10- Here, Pavement
Oh Pavement - a big part of my identity! - Live, they are a fucking dream! This song is a regular ear worm.
11- Demon Host, Timber Timbre
Great lyrics, great album
12- Animal Friends, P-ano
The only song I’m into on this album, the atmosphere is great. A sad little song.
13- Sleepwalk, Santo and Johnny
1959 so lets call it 60’s again XD. A great instrumental - that slide, steel guitar sound is lush and the asmr trigger of my dreams
14- Hang Out The Stars In Indiana, Al Bowlly
MY FAVOURITE SONG OF ALL FUCKING TIME. I can and do listen to this on repeat all through a drawing even if it takes a day. Withnail & I introduced me - one of my favourite films. And, of course Bowlly is on The Shining too.
15- Wasted Teens, Monoganon
Lost Map records again, excellent and crazy live performance from these on Eigg.
16- The Alien, Ben Salisbury, Geoff Barrow
Such dark foreboding anticipation. From the Annihilation soundtrack - brilliant film and score. I love Portishead too.
17- Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries, Al Bowlly
Hey cheer up everyone - fuck it!
18- Wanna Sip, Fever Ray
I do! This is from their live recording at the Troxy - I WAS THERE —- oooooooooooof fuck WHAT A SHOW honestly!
19- Lipstick Stains, Jay Som
“I wanted to musically capture the immediate and intense but beautiful feeling of infatuation.” —— yep!
20- Heat Wave, Snail Mail
Yes! They are brilliant - saw them live at End Of The Road and the tent was CRAMMED!!!!!! The atmosphere was amazing - she is so young and so great.
21- I Love How You Love Me, The Paris Sisters
Hello 1960’s! The creamy Spector sound and that spoken word is amazing.
22- Shadow, Chromatics
Loved this on Twin Peaks The Return, it’s a gem and perfect for drawing/painting to.
23- Bankrobber, The Clash
I always sing ‘Daddy was a vampire’
24- Do Your Best, John Maus
Slo-mo beauty.
25- Canadian Girl, The Walkmen
Nice vintage-tinged weirdness and soul.
26- Wave of Mutilation (UK SURF) Pixies
I love Pixies, only seen them live once but it was very, very, very special. Beautiful, laid back b side version that I prefer to the album track.
27- Fell An Ox
There was a time where all I would listen to was King Creosote - it was an obsession! I have lost count of KC gigs I’ve been to.
28- Slow West, Django Django
Love the film, love the soundtrack, loved Django Django up till the last few releases. There is a live version of this on KEXP from four years ago which is the one I usually listen to. Fucking brilliant live - got to see them on Eigg one time too. I rec the Slow West film if you haven’t seen it.
29- Withnail’s Theme, Jack Hallam
Great film and soundtrack - a big favourite.
30- Portofino 1, Raymond Scott
60’s!  Ha - I hadn’t realised this at all till writing all this.
31- Lady Gaylord, Raymond Scott
From Manhattan Research Inc a collection of his advertising jingles and snippets from the 60’s
32- The Pink Room, Angelo Badalamenti
Filthiest song ever? From Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me
33- Goodnight Felicia, Chris Bear
From the score to excellent TV show, High Maintenance. I do love Grizzly Bear anyway and cried at their last gig I went to - I always cry at gigs though so….
34- Plainsong, The Cure
My teenage self was a massive Cure fan and I dedicated my record player, school books, wardrobe and bedroom to them! Saw them live only once (the LIGHTS!!!!) because I was too young, obsessed over Robert Smith a lot! This song and the whole album were a big favourite. Beautiful.
35- A Reluctant Hero/Betsy/End Credits Taxi Driver, Bernard Herrmann
I love Herrmann and I really love Taxi Driver. This is just…. ooof!
36- I Fall In Love Too Easily, Chet Baker
Jazzzzzzzzzzzzzzz 1954- what a pretty little voice.
37- Looking Back I Should Have Been Home More, Richard Swift
Just lovely, so sad about Swift.
38- Be My Baby, The Ronettes
The best opening song use ever- MEAN STREETS - turn this RIGHT up please.
39- Go, Sparklehorse, Flaming Lips - Daniel Johnston cover
Doubly sad because of Sparklehorse and Daniel Johnston. I have seen The Flaming Lips many times throughout their career - from small gigs to radio telescope gigs! What a fucking show!
40- Every Night, Perfume Genius
Just nice stuff. Like I said - live he is so sensual- his moves are amazing.
41- Fireflies Made Out of Dust, Happy Jawbone Family Band
Great track. Love the lyrics.
42- Sleeping Lessons, The Shins
Richard Swift again, on keyboards. I really enjoy the historical references and atmosphere on this.
43- Smoke Rings, Les Paul, Mary Ford
1952 - ssssso ssssssspooooky

“I have a memory of a time and place where history resigned
Now in my reverie
For the guiding light that opened up my mind”
I know I just did a Sufjan song review not too long ago but this is a new album! So I promise I’ll start spreading these out more guys! Ok so with that being said! Today’s pick for me is called “Reach out” written by Sufjan Stevens and he collaborated on this whole entire album with fellow artist Angelo De Augustine. The album is titled “A beginners Mind.” I firmly believe some some songs have the ability to soothe the soul and this one is no exception! I literally have been singing it while in my car or working! It’s just so beautiful again this song is almost like a poem! So I really thought this song was about standing up for what you believe in and to reach out to those that are different from you because you could learn a thing or two however some lyrics didn’t add up to this. So I did some research on this particular song and found out that it was loosely based off a 1987 German film called Wings of Desire. The movie is about how Angels are able to listen to the thoughts of Berliners. However a particular Angel decides to stray and decides to become mortal to experience all that there is to experience in the human world instead of just being a spectator. How beautiful right? Such a great song! I totally recommend a listen! 🌼🌖✨

I do my best to culturally cultivate a year’s time, albeit with an arm-rake that isn’t nearly as daring or diverse as the many others making the rounds. With every year-end of late I scan album lists and come away scratching more. Am I aging? Is it I like what I like? Is it I’m more well-rounded at the film buffet? Ah well. I tried again. How do others cram so much in their ears? What’s to be said (heard) of all the older tunes just now hissing into frame? There’s never enough.
This is where I give my ten cents, so whatever. It’s been what I consider an authentic avalanche year in music. As with the noise in the outside arena, my ears haven’t really experienced (nor recovered from) a year quite like it. And you know the string of releases are getting out of hand when a Luddite like myself finally resorts to utilizing streaming services like Spotify and starts to prefer it.
That being said, I think I’ve narrowed my top ten list down. Here are the albums that either spoke to me by way of hitting PLAY a lot, or having kept in my thoughts and inner canals in 2017. They’re likely ones I’ll be spinning many years from now as well. (Side Note: Coincidentally, many of these feature some of my favorite album cover art of the year. My top pick, Big Thief’s Capacity, I truthfully avoided listening to for a while because I didn’t understand its cover. Then, I kept seeing it and couldn’t escape it. Now, it’s one of my favorite covers.) There’s still a lot of music I’ve barely spun or have yet to try on, so for my own pathetic consolation, amusement and reminder, I’ll add these, as well as some miscellaneous release items and my favorite (only) concerts of the year.
Top Albums of 2017

Big Thief: Capacity The Magnetic Fields: 50 Song Memoir Bedouine: Self-Titled Fleet Foxes: Crack-Up Slowdive: Self-Titled

Scrobble stats 2019
In total I listened to 18800 tracks in 2019, or 51.51 tracks per day. Thats up 2369 on 2018, and is the largest number of scrobbles in any of my twelve years scrobbling to last.fm - the second year in a row that I’ve broken this record. It’s genuinely hard to say what to attribute this uplift to, as I’ve been at home less this year than last year. As is often the case, December saw the most listening with 2204 scrobbles (the most since January 2013, and the second highest ever), and June the fewest with just 562 (the fewest since August 2017) - probably attributable to the fairly wall-to-wall politics that month.
The position of Sigur Rós at the top is a bit weird - I just listened to their 24 hour album a lot when I needed to work and it’s skewed the stats.
I listened to 2155 artists across 2019 - up 364 on 2018.
Here are my top 50 artists for 2018 by listens: > Position, (last year’s position in top 250, if any), artist, plays in 2019 <

49           The Future Sound of London (31) 81 scrobbles
50           Jay Lumen (67) 78 scrobbles
Owing to the significant increase in scrobbles this year, a number of artists who’d have made it into last year’s top 50 didn’t quite make it this year - Orbital, Miss Kittin, The Knife, Everything But The Girl, Objekt, 808 State, Soft Cell, The Avalanches and Moloko.
Overall, I do think the lack of new entries this year means I need to broaden my regular listening a bit.
