Please do more of the writing head canons. It’s really interesting to see other people’s ideas on the topic, so if you can be bothered, I would highly appreciate more, thanks bye <3
Y’all don’t know how happy I am to talk about these headcanons, they are my babies and I love them so much :’) thanks for asking g <3
Handwriting Headcanons
Same dynamic as before, try to guess whose handwriting it is before reading and tell me how many you got right! <3
Tumblr media
You can find the first post here (no need to check it tho)
Quick disclaimer: halfway through making my initial notes, I remembered I had one (1) single lesson of graphology in my applied linguistics class, but that was a year ago and some information might be off. I just thought it was neat to include.
Another quick disclaimer: I don’t know much about Hylian, but I like to think it has a similar stroke system to Japanese, so the pressure and accuracy of your strokes play a major role in your handwriting (among other things, ofc.) so there are some parts where I focus more on that
(First Row, from left to right)
Sky
Our first boy is mother hen! Believe it or not, he has the prettiest handwriting out of all of them! Sky: probably has nice, even elegant handwriting because Sun forced him to practice when they were little. In the end, that paid off because his handwriting is the prettiest one. There’s no pressure, but he is confident in what he writes that his lines aren’t thin. Mistakes? what is that? this boy has impeccable grammar and spelling. No mechanic errors to be found in his letters! I’d like to think that many of Hyrule’s classic/staple poems were originally written by the firt king aka sky child. Like, imagine, after a retiring from being a Person of Power (as the first ruler), Sky finds comfort in the arts: revisits his old woodcarvings and starts writing poetry about the world he still doesn’t fully understand. wowie. tldr: sky writes poetry and you can pry it from my cold dead hands.
This is what one of his letters would look like:
Tumblr media
Next one is the one and only, our Hero of Time
2. Time
I’ll die on the “Time didn’t know how to read and write” hill. His handwriting is simple, not pretty but not messy. It has some grammar and spelling mistakes here and there. Can become unreadable if writing in a hurry, he sorts of forgets spaces between words are a thing/letters have different sizes and lowercase letters end up the same size as capital letters. I’m not saying he sometimes forgets to write articles: he just doesn’t want to. Honestly, he just has this dad-neat handwriting. He is a gentle dad and writes like a dad, if he puts too much pressure onto the paper, his handwriting become too sharp/angle-ish and ends up looking ugly. And as much as he would like to not care about it, in the end he does (:
Malon taught him how to write and it was quite the experience. At first he didn’t want to because he was ‘too old’ to learn and it was torture at first, but now look at him devouring his cowboy novels.
A chunk of his handwriting:
Tumblr media
*sniff* such a dad quote.
3. my mansss, your  4x1 deal at Target: Four
Look, my boy is patient! He could do some nice and fancy lettering if he wanted to. He was taught that handwriting and spelling said a whole lot about him as a person, you know, like a first impression kinda thing; so he always proof reads more than twice before sending a letter. Super rare grammar mistakes.
The faster he writes, the more slant his writing becomes. Under stress/ when not sure how to write things down, run-on sentences are everywhere and his handwriting is inconsistent in general (I don’t headcanon each part of him having completely different handwriting because handwriting becomes muscle memory over time. It’s just slightly different variations of the same, like idk  Vio’s handwriting is neater than Green’s and Red writes hearts instead of any dot/circle and no, I do not take constructive criticism on that, jk i do.) Adding on to each of the colours’ handwriting, I’d think Red and Green write with words slanted to the right( inclined), Vio is a mix of the opposite, so reclined and straight, and my mans blue a true neutral writes straight (kinda like Time’s).
The logic behind this is that inclined writing supposedly means honesty and need for giving (and getting) affection; reclined means, as you can probably imagine,  defensiveness and repression of true feelings, but also shows great concentration; straight handwriting means self-control, observation and reflection as well as distrust and indifference. But as complete being (tm), Four just writes as in the image example which is not too straight and not too inclined, and I believe that’s a good middle for him
HOWEVER, if I’m feeling in the mood for crack, I totally accept this boy to have the ugliest, chicken scratches-looking handwriting! :’D It’s just funny to think that someone like him, who has to be precise and careful in his work, can't write neatly to save his life.
One of his letters would look like this:
Tumblr media
Also I just LOVE how his hero titles look in this font ksksks
Tumblr media
and that’s
(Middle row, from left to right)
4.- Mister Bunny Boy - Legend
His uncle taught him how to write. I’d call his handwriting pretty and neat at a first glance, but he presses too hard on the paper, most of the time staining the back or the following page. Sometimes will retrace some words if he doesn’t like how it looks (which only makes it messier). According to my notes, a thick or strong handwriting represents determination/commitment.
As I also headcanon him to know many languages, mechanical errors are more present than grammar ones; that is, weird capitalisation of words. Punctuation is somewhere in between; uses too many commas when he should just cut the sentence. he mixes punctuation from two languages or more in writing when too distracted (or too focused, because, well, pressure.); when he writes for himself, he has almost no problem following said language’s punctuation rules. Also, this is just polyglot culture, and I’m projecting a bit, but when he forgets a word in the language he’s writing, he just replaces it with its equivalent in another language because we don’t care about fluency, but rather functionality. in this household (more on that in my language hc, ksksks).
An example of his writing:
Tumblr media
so powerful
4.-  Mr. Wolfman, howl me a song - Twilight
I don’t have much for him because 1) I don’t think he writes a lot and 2) he is a hands-on/visual learner, I’ll die by that. He only learnt how to write because Ulli insisted it was important and he was not about to disrespect his momma; he IS That Guy, but doesn’t really write enough to have neat handwriting.
Many people seem to overlook the fact that his house is filled with books and write him as completely illiterate (which if not explored properly, ends up feeling a bit disrespectful and full of prejudice, but go off I guess; and that’s on my core Headcanons for Twi); however, he sticks to simple sentences. Knowing how to read and understanding a text is different from knowing how to write them. Like, when we would see a semicolon and understand its position in the text, but didn’t understand the nature of it. Is this clear? idk i’m sorry. So yeah, boy reads a lot, writes very little.
As for his Actual Handwriting, as opposed to Legend, his handwriting is thiccc but not because he presses into the paper; he is just that messy, he has no sense of ink-flow-control, he does what he can with what he has. To the untrained eye, his handwriting illegible letters like v, n, u are very similar; when he makes notes for himself he does it in the form of doodles or small ‘icons’. But! He reads a lot, so he rarely makes spelling mistakes (: he is your go-to guy when you don’t know how to write a word.
An example of his writing:
Tumblr media
He keeps a journal, sue me.
3. My first born- Warrior
Okay, first off... I accept this is completely biased. I saw the idea and said “That’s True”. If you haven’t, please read Effective Communication; or The Lack of Thereof by htruona, a fic where the boys reflect on the language barriers between them. It’s incredibly funny and probably what made me start making these silly notes. So, if you’ve read that fic, you know where I’m going.
My man, Warrior, can’t fucking write. I mean, he physically can, but it’s very bad. Here’s the reason for it, tho, and it’s not his fault: Technically, he knew how to write alright but he joined the military and whatever note he had to write had to be concise or in the worst case coded. He mixes capital and lowercase letters. If we consider that he joined the military at around 15, his handwriting and grammar had yet to continue developing. Just think about how after summer break, your handwriting was always slightly worse than before because you didn’t write for an entire month. Now think what 2 years can do to that. Hmm, not cool, dude. He makes quick notes, when writing he’s all gotta go fast. he is the lighting mcqueen of writing; good for emergency messages, not ideal for love letters. His punctuation also suffered a lot, he only know full stops and commas and hardly uses them. A sentence for him is either one word or fifty without a single comma, no inbetween.
His hero title and an example of his writing.
Tumblr media
(Bottom row, or what I like to call “fuck cursive” row)
7.- Magic man - Hyrule
I’m basic and I do agree with the popular headcanon of he not knowing how to write because well, y’all know his Hyrule. He only knows how to write his name because that’s important, same with numbers. I don’t see why would he write/read except checking the roadsigns. (he can even use this as an excuse for getting lost frequently; he thought it said something different.) But I do think that because his habitual reading consists of roadsigns, his ‘punctuation’ is weird af and places full stops/points/periods at the same level of his words and his commas/question/exclamation marks below them. Yk, creative license. Sadly, I don’t have much about my magic hands man so here’s what his writing would look like if he actually wrote a paragraph:
Tumblr media
Man, I love Hyrule.
8.- Man, I don’t understand this boy -  Wild
Cursive? ain’t nobody have the time for that. He woke up and had to save the world in his underwear while not knowing how to read nor write.  He learnt during his journey and was taught by multiple people from different regions, that explains his inconsistent spelling of things and names for them. So Wild knows language variations for many items and uses them interchangeably (even if they aren’t exactly the same). Another headcanon related to writing/language skills that I’ve been thinking about is that if the shrine was able to cause amnesia, I’m sure there were other areas in the brain affected which leads us to language disorders such as agraphia and aphasia. But that’s a story for another day ksksksk
An example of his writing (after relearning)
Tumblr media
9.- The best of sons - Wind
I don’t have much for him and that makes me sad. Look, he’s a kid, doing kid things like stabbing dudes on the head. This boy was taught cursive by his grandma, but could never do it and no one needs it anyway. His handwriting is good enough for his pirate life, Tetra is the one to handle Official stuff, he just gotta sign. Spelling and grammar mistakes abound. He is still relatively young and can correct his handwriting if he desires. But same as Wild, with how many times he’s been thrown out and hit his head, I’m starting to consider some language disorder for him as well.
An example of his writing:
Tumblr media
aaand that’s it.
Thanks, y’all for showing interest in this silly thing uwu it was fun to finally talk about this. If you ever want to discuss ideas/headcanons(especially if they are related to language and culture), I’m your person (: Im always happy to hear new headcanons. Feel free to add anything to this post either in a reply or in a reblog, I’d love to hear from y’all <3<3

hello, do you have any tips for writing in English when you're not a native English speaker? Do you write in English from the start? Love your writing, btw!
Well hi! This was a very nice anon to receive, I'm honoured! And thank you for the compliment <3
So first let me start reminding you that writing in a language that it's not your own is super difficult, because it's not just diferent words and structures, but a whole different way of thinking and understanding the world. So please be gentle and patient with yourself while you do it!
Yes, the stories that I intend to publish in English are written in English from the start. Ever since I started writing my fics in English I took this approach and tbh I think it’s the best one. I reccommend it big time because you surely will write more complex or ellaborate stuff in your native language and then it'll be very difficult/frustrating to try and take that into English. Don't worry if your first stories in English are a bit rough, you'll get better with time! Practice here is key.
You can find the tips under the cut because I’m wordy as hell so it turned out super long.
- When English is not working for you like, I suggest writing down a little summary in your own language of what you want to write for later. Not the actual thing but what you want to tell. The ideas will probably come easier in your native language and then when English is working again, you can go back to it without losing your ideas.
-This one may be obvious but READ A LOT IN ENGLISH. I would especially suggest books written in English by English speakers. But of course, everything helps, including fics. And while you do that, try to stop and pay attention to the language. When something really works for you (a dialogue, a description, a feeling) pause, go back to the words, and notice how it was done. I've been doing this "active reading" lately and it has helped me a lot.
-Similar to the one above: expose yourself to a lot of English. Tumblr is okay but also go and watch videos of native English speakers. Listen to songs in English and take the time to look for the lyrics and think about them. When a word sounds interesting but you are not certain of the menaing, look it up! Even if you don't remember the words exactly for later, the little research will help you either way. Watch movies and series and pay attention to the language and how people talk. That'll also help you to incorporate phrases, jokes and sayings that people use in everyday life. Just expose yourself to English as much as you can and have your writer brain open and attentive!
-Going more into the writing process, those lists of different ways of saying words, or words for different moods or situations are fantastic. Just always remember to check for the word precise meaning and usage before putting anything in your work.
-I highly recommend Thesaurus. It's great for looking for alternative to words (always checking meaning and usage!), but also sometimes you know there's this word that reminds you of this other that would fit perfectly in your text and you just can’t remember the actual word you want. In those desperate moments, I go to Thesaurus, search the word I do remember, and more often than not, I arrive to the one I actually wanted (or sometimes, to another great word I hadn’t thought about!)
-Using a Collocations Dictionary literally saves your life (? I learnt about these dictionaries during uni and I loved them so much I bought a physical one which saved me many times while writing essays. Basically it gives you the prepositions, adjectives, adverbs, whatever that most usually “collocate” (go with) the word you’re looking for.
-Check for spelling whenever you are not certain you are writing a word correctly. And I mean putting the word straight on the Google search bar. If you got a letter (or several) wrong, Google will help you.
-Google combinations of words between quotation marks (”word”) to see if they are actually used by English speakers. I can’t come up with anything better right now, but for example, “seat belt” in Spanish is “cinturón de seguridad” and you could translate that literally to “security belt”. If for some reason I wasn’t sure of which of these combinations the acceptable, I could google each phrase between quotations marks and see the number of results. Usually, the option with more results is the one that is most commonly used and that will be understood more easily. For example, “security belt” throws 316k results, while “seat belt” throws 57million results.
-Use Google Images to look for specific vocabulary you can’t remember or simply don’t know. “Kitchen appliances names”, “parts of a book names”, “parts of the body names” “clothing names”. You’ll get charts with pictures and names and it’ll make your life ten times easier, I promise.
-Decide if you are writing in British or American English... or if you don't care lol. The most sensible thing to do is to pick one, but if you are writing just for fun, you might as well accept that you’ll have inconsistencies in that matter and let it be. If you do choose one English variant though, google the most common differences in spelling AND I highly suggest running Word’s spellcheck after setting the language to the English variant you’re using.
-Needless to say, writing blogs are your friends. They are full of resources, some even specially thought for non native English speakers.
-In general I would say that googling stuff is an excellent strategy when you have doubts: verb conjugations, one words vs the other, anything about English grammar, etc.
-If you feel comfortable with it, getting a Beta reader who is an English native speaker is super great. A Beta reader in general would be fine because someone else may notice a mistake you overlooked (God knows how many "ringed" instead of "rang" I've posted in my life). Also a trusted friend giving a second read can help. Or you reading out loud, if it's not a very long thing, can help you identify if there's something off.
-Be gentle with yourself! You'll make mistakes! You will even post them! My fics, old and recent always have at least one mistake no matter how much I check them. That's fine! You can go and edit them or leave it, and I promise people won't get mad at you (if they do let me know and I'll virtually punch them).
-Finally, practice, practice, practice!
I hope this very long answer is somewhat useful! And do let me know if I can help you with anything else.
Much love xx

Exam 2: Goethe-Zertifikat B1 German exam
The second hurdle for my year-long language exam challenge!
🌟 why am i doing this?
Everything I learnt my two years of german study at uni has eVAPORATED from my brain after not having practised for quite some time and I’m back for redemption!! When i left uni i would have been pretty solidly at B1 level with german so my goal for this language exam is simply to get myself back to were I was 💪
With effort I could mayyyyybe go for the B2 exam - that is, if study goes well and I’m able to get myself back up to the level I had when I left uni with time to spare- buuuuuuut for the time being I’d prefer to set my goal as B1 which is much more manageable. If I get near to the exam date and feel like I’ve got my skills up to a passable B2 standard I might revise this goal 😎
imho German is such an awesome language to learn and I really enjoyed my classes at uni so i’m definitely looking forward to diving right back in! I also have a few friends who are German native speakers or living in a German speaking country and learning the language so I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to practise with them (and any other German speaker/learner here who is up for a chat!)
🌟 when am i gonna do it?
The actual exam dates in the center I’m likely to take this exam in have not yet been posted for 2021, but it looks like the B1 exam is held a coupe of times a year - with any luck I hope to sit this exam in around July 2021. However if i do end up feeling brave and going for the B2 this might be pushed back a bit  ✌️
🌟 what will be on the exam?
in a very helpful move, the Goethe Institute has written on their website (in English) the main assessable goals for the B1 exam:
understand the main points of information in conversations and texts on familiar matters relating to work, school and leisure time, etc. when clear, standard language is used,
deal with most situations typically encountered when travelling in German-speaking countries,
express yourself simply and coherently when talking about familiar topics and areas of personal interest,
report on experiences and events, describe dreams, hopes and ambitions as well as make short statements and explanations.
Like most other language exams, there will be four main parts: reading, listening, writing and speaking and these components together will have a total run time of 3 hours (and I might be able to take the sections on different days? its unclear but huge if true)
🌟 what will i need to do?
first step will 100% be revising everything I learnt grammar-wise at uni and jogging my memory on all the vocab i learnt (i’m sure it’s all tucked away in my brain somewhere,,, memrise and quizlet here i come 😅)
this exam will be quite a challenge because in some ways i feel like i’m really starting from scratch again but hopefully i’ll be able to pick it up again fairly easily. this is also a good level to be coming back to because a lot of what is covered on this exam are general topics so in this case I’m looking to study topics more freely for a bit and get a feel for the language again, but sooner rather than later i’ll focusing in on the exact questions and format of the exam itself (many thanks @lagom-languages for your advice on this!)
🌟 how will i study?
the really awesome thing about learning German is that there is an AMPLE amount of free online resources to get stuck into (like easy to read news, slow german podcasts etc) so little by little, each week I’ll be working on reading and listening that way, and practicing writing responses/summaries of what I read. All this plus an occasional chat with a willing speaking partner and following a textbook for grammar exercises should be a good way to get started!
If anyone has any specific recommendations for A2-B1 level resources that I’ve missed here, or any other tips in general pls let me know!
another super long post from me (only 2 more to go 😅) so thank you to anyone who’s read to the end of this plus a huge thanks to everyone who’s already reached out to help me!!

Get a grade 9 in a language GCSE!
Please note:
1. These tips are almost entirely applicable to any AQA language at GCSE. 2. Modern Foreign Languages at GCSE Level is anywhere from A2 to B1 (dependant on the tier and grade) on the CEFR scale, but, there is no official equivalent.
In November 2018, whilst in Year 10, my teacher saw that I was excelling in French, with my extensive knowledge of tenses and idioms. So, she proposed that I’d do the January mocks, alongside Year 11, despite not knowing more than half of the subject content. Then we’d see where I’d go from there.
I followed the AQA exam board, higher paper. Specification. You can find the Kerboodle textbook I used, here.
Here’s what I did:
Throughout the year, I was also studying the Year 10 content (Theme 1 - Identity and culture) in class.
In my own time, each month I’d cover one or two units, completing the more challenging activities on each page of the textbook. Luckily, each unit was only 4 double-page spreads long.
In January I completed my mocks. This was the first time I had ever sat in an exam hall, so it was really daunting to be doing it with a bunch of kids who were older than me, even though I knew I had enough knowledge. Overall, I got a secure grade 8, in my mocks, despite not knowing half of the course content.
I also did “pre-exam mocks”, two weeks before each exam. These consisted of specimen papers which are notoriously harder, so my results looked almost exactly the same as past papers, which was upsetting as I couldn’t see that I’d actually improved. But practice is practice!
MY ACTUAL GCSE RESULT:
With a lot of work. I managed to achieve a grade 9 (the top mark, higher than an A*), which was insane. I’m so, so proud of myself, and grateful for all of the teachers that supported me!!!
^Edit from 25/08/2019.
LISTENING
In my opinion, listening is based purely on practice and knowing the exam technique that works for you.
To practice:
frenchpod101 intermediate listening comprehension
Going through every specimen track and listening activity I could find - pausing it after each sentence, saying it once in French, then translating it into English. I’d do this in the shower, on the way to school, wherever.
Know your vocab!
My exam technique:
In the 5 minutes reading time: underline keywords and themes in the questions. This time goes very quickly, but I’d also try to jot down a few synonyms in the French section too.
Multiple choice questions: the process of elimination; key vocab; negative and positive tonality and opinion words - watch out for negative structures!
Completing the sentences: note down words said in French or translate each sentence into English in your head, then remember it when it comes to writing it down.
French section: fill each sentence with key French words that you hear. Don’t worry about accents, unless it helps you determine the word.
Remember each track plays twice.
READING
The January Mock: I didn’t know much of the course content, so I struggled with the translation. I also circled and placed a question mark near any words I didn’t know, as it was a mock and my teacher would be able to note down any translations for me. I think what boosted my grade, to a 9 for this paper, was knowledge of grammar.
T/F/NM questions are usually a gamble. Just look for explicit information and know your negative formations.
Texts change their minds often: look out for counter-arguments and opposing exclamations
Use the method of elimination for multiple choice: rule out if there’s no mention. Be wary that a text can mention an option, but say it wasn’t that.
Texts often refer to things mentioned prior.
If you know a certain type of texts are your kryptonite (it was the classical stories with dialogue, for me), then download as many of that genre as you can. Understand the way speech and dialogue works, and the structure, before you tackle the vocab.
Many say skim read and don’t read the whole thing, but I found it easier to translate big chunks in my head as I went along and lightly annotate each text, which just comes with practice.
WRITING
Top tip: don’t go any more than 10% over word limits!!!!!!! Teachers say they have to mark all of it - no they don’t. If you do double the word limit, your last few bullet points could come after the cut-off point, cutting off access to half of the marks!!!
90 WORD - 99 words maximum! About 20-25 words per bullet point.
150 WORD - 165 words maximum! About 75 words per bullet point.
Which brings me to mention, that you must cover every bullet point: those are your content marks, which cover about half the marks of each question.
90 WORD Question (16 marks)
Content - 10 marks: Making sure your writing covers each bullet point enough.
Quality of Language - 6 marks: Using interesting vocabulary, such as “malheureusement”.
Stick to about one page.
If you’re giving an opinion, great, just stop there. If you explain it too much, you risk going over your word limit.
150 WORD Question (32 marks)
Content - 15 marks: Every. Bullet. Point. Detailed.
Range of Language - 12 marks: get in those adjectives, idioms and grammatical structures!
Accuracy - 5 marks: correct basic tense conjugations (present, past, future simple/future proche)
In order to hit all of these I came up with a mnemonic checklist, and it scored me full marks in a specimen paper I did for my teacher! And I made it into a cute phone background, so I’d start to remember it, I still can now, hehe! You can find it here. If that doesn’t work, then download it here.
SPEAKING
Know your question words! (x)
For the roleplay and photocard, my teacher printed off me a load of practice cards in bulk and annotated two or three every day, using the planning techniques mentioned below.
Roleplay - 2 minutes; can be any theme.
When planning, try to avoid writing out answers, but just keywords and gaps for you to fill in with pronouns or articles etc.
Keep it brief, one sentence per bullet point, but cover each part of each bullet point.
Photo card - 3 minutes (aim to speak for at least 2).
Plan with a small spider-diagram of nouns, opinions, anecdotes etc. for each known question.
Use one or two prepped anecdotes for the prepared questions - e.g. where you went last year, who with, what you did.
For the unknown questions, keep it short and sweet and fill up any time with opinions and reasoning.
General conversation - 5-7 minutes.
Lie and make up stories! Be creative and use the words and structures you know.
I was a little extra and I prepared every theme as flashcards. You can’t get away with only revising your chosen theme!
I made flashcards that could cover several types of questions: I had bullet points of topics and keywords on one side and a sample paragraph on the other.
Pretty sure I made about 80 flashcards oops.
I also went through the mark scheme and see which areas I could secure marks in and which areas I needed to improve.
VOCAB
Learning vocab is SO important!
I started by making spreadsheets of jumbled word lists from the specification and doing a colour-coded match up.
You can access a pdf of all of the vocab grids here. There might be the odd word missing due to copy-pasting errors, but if so, don’t stress, just look it up in a dictionary and note it down - sorry in advance!!!
Then with the vocab that I had to look up in a dictionary, I added to a Quizlet and wrestled it into my noggin.
You can find the Quizlet here.
Remember that:
sauf - except
puisque - since
presque - almost
GRAMMAR
To me, learning tenses was like learning formulae for maths. So find a way to learn rules like that, if it’s easier for you.
e.g. Conditional Tense = subject + (future/conditional stem + imperfect ending)*
*note that future stems are the same as conditional stems.
Know your DRMRSPVANDERTRAMP verbs, and their past participles. These verbs go with ÊTRE and always agree with the subject.
Know your auxiliary and irregular verbs.
MUST KNOW: avoir, être, aller, faire, vouloir
HELPFUL: devoir, pouvoir, vivre, boire, voir, dire, savoir
OTHERS: mettre, prendre, venir, écrire, lire, recevoir
I learnt these by making flashcards, and then brain dumping them on paper over and over again until they stuck - my teacher thought I was insane, madly scribbling away.
Memorise some key structures that can be used in writing and speaking.
If you want 7+ structures, find them here.
MISC TIPS
Always write notes about improvements and errors in practice papers and mocks.
Find a native french internet friend.
In my opinion, music, movies and TV shows aren’t great for revision. However, if you begin to understand them, they are a great confidence boost.
I highly recommend the Skam France series, which you can find with and without les sous-titres (subtitles) here.
And here’s my french music playlist on Spotify.
MORE ASSISTANCE
I’m happy to offer my assistance to anybody who needs it, pop me a dm or an ask if you think others will find it useful too.
Here’s some ways I could help:
Finding some resources about a certain topic (videos, worksheets, mindmaps) - I have them all backed up hehe
Sending you some of my past answers
Sending you pdf of my general conversation/irregular verb table flashcards
Marking practice answers
Talking to you in french
Etc. etc.
Thank you for reading! Please reblog to help any others that might find this useful. If any of the links are faulty, please pop me a dm, and I’ll get them sorted asap!! 🥐

Answer to Rosebud1773
Tumblr media
@rosebud1773 Ok My intention is not to be rude here but *takes deep breath* I don’t know why you think you are classified as someone that knows about autism? Like do you have it? Does someone you know have it? Does your favorite celeb have it? Or do you just like reading clickbaity articles about autism?
Because everything you said is basicly misconceptions and myths made up after a few individuals or by the general public and while yes autism is a different way of thinking there is no it’s “just” about it.. it is literally an entire different way of functioning and it is NOT the “next step in evolution” or a “better” way of thinking. My brain works differently then a neurotypical persons brain..
“Autism affects information processing in the brain by altering connections and organization of nerve cells and their synapses.[19] How this occurs is not well understood.[19] “
the fat cursive text was copied from wikipedia to show my meaning.
Also! Autism and Asperger is the same thing! there is multiple diagnoses that has been put togheter under one name Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and as the name suggests it is a spectrum.. That means there will be people with less symptoms that can function better in society and there will be more extreme cases that have more severe symptoms and some that can’t even speak atall..
“About a third to a half of individuals with autism do not develop enough natural speech to meet their daily communication needs “
I myself had a big delay in learning to talk and didn’t even babble like babies usually do but I got there in the end and I can now talk without problems other then my problems to concentrate and my inability to understand any type of grammar.
And saying autism isn’t a disorder is highly ignorant, while there are even some autistic people that wants to see it as just a different way of functioning the truth is that society is not built for people that function differently.. Also you can have symptoms that would fit into autism but still not get a diagnos because you don’t get diagnosed as autistic unless it is disabling you from having a normal life.
On top of all the problems understanding social communication and body language autistic people also often have problem with sensory overload (sound, movement, light, temprature, taste, smell, feel and touch) which makes it really hard to go anywhere.. Ofcourse also this is different for every individual but if I have a “bad day” I can only be out for a few minutes then i shut down and become unresponsive because I can’t stand all the sensory inputs. I happen to be sensetive to all the sensory inputs which makes it very hard to go through everyday life.
Also autistic people often have a higher base level of stress and small things cause greater stress then for neurotypicals and thereby have a greater chance to go over the line into “chaos” atleast that is what I was taught it’s called here in sweden. Basicly chaos is when the stress goes over a line into total meltdown and that looks different for everyone and happens for neurotypical people too but because of the lower base stress they are further away from it while many autistic people are already in the harmfully stressed zone or like me basicly balancing on the line of chaos at all times. For me chaos either is that I completly shut down and become impossible to reach or I lose control of myself and cry and scream and tries to hurt myself with hitting kicking biting and scratching myself.
Another thing that is often a problem for autistic people is repetetive behaviour
Autistic individuals can display many forms of repetitive or restricted behavior, which the Repetitive Behavior Scale-Revised (RBS-R) categorizes as follows.[47]
Stereotyped behaviors: Repetitive movements, such as hand flapping, head rolling, or body rocking.
Compulsive behaviors: Time-consuming behaviors intended to reduce anxiety that an individual feels compelled to perform repeatedly or according to rigid rules, such as placing objects in a specific order, checking things, or hand washing.
Sameness: Resistance to change; for example, insisting that the furniture not be moved or refusing to be interrupted.
Ritualistic behavior: Unvarying pattern of daily activities, such as an unchanging menu or a dressing ritual. This is closely associated with sameness and an independent validation has suggested combining the two factors.[47]
Restricted interests: Interests or fixations that are abnormal in theme or intensity of focus, such as preoccupation with a single television program, toy, or game.
Self-injury: Behaviors such as eye-poking, skin-picking, hand-biting and head-banging.[20]
Ok pheeew and now to the genius IQ level thing.. let me just copy in this..
An estimated 0.5% to 10% of individuals with ASD show unusual abilities, ranging from splinter skills such as the memorization of trivia to the extraordinarily rare talents of prodigious autistic savants.[49] Many individuals with ASD show superior skills in perception and attention, relative to the general population.
That’s 0,5 -10% that are on like a super level of smart.. and most of the time when autistic people are super talented at something it is because it is a special interest/hyper fixation. Often we get super fixated on one thing and spend all our time doing that and nothing else.
Sure autistic people can have above average IQ but most of the time it is hindered by a lack of concentration or an inability or difficulties processing the information. For me my general inteligence is slightly above average but my thinking speed is way below average and my ability to put togheter the information toa bigger picture is also below average
Ok I don’t know if I covered everything but that’s all I have to say about autism for now other then that this information come from me ( someone with autism ) , the autism diagnoses course I took, books I have read on the subject, autism groups i’m a part of and other autistic people on youtube *loooong sigh*
Oh and ADHD is also a big problem but I think you get it already that you grossly oversimplyfied disablities you obviously know nothing about =)
Ok and now on to the actual helpful things wooo 🎉
Tumblr media
I am thinking about starting a patreon but I don’t know if I have enough of a following to get the word out but patreon is deffinetly an option that I’m putting serious thought into! and so is my significant other =) Right now they are taking as many commissions as they possibly can and is also working on a game so there is really no time for starting and managing a patreon but it is something that most likely will be set up in the future when they have a more open schedule. Eldraev have wanted to start a patreon for soo long  =)
One sided finances is a pain honestly D=
I know I can’t control my family situation but I can and am working on my health everyday. But I can’t control my eating disorder it is not just a “just do it situation” it is a daily struggle but I’m working on it.  Also I would loove to stay away from food but I’m most of the time forced to eat sooo nothing I can do there xD Trust me I know I would feel so much better if I didn’t have to eat but i have no control of my eating schedule for health reasons Oh and it isn’t as simple as just moving around. I reblogged the post and added information and there I talked about my body being week and me getting a lot of pain from any amount of “exercise” but that is also I’m slowly working on
Ok very sorry for suuuper long reply but this is a topic I feel passionate about and I don’t like missinformation spreading or people belittling disabled peoples struggles. NEVER tell a disabled person that their disability is nothing!
I thank you for your being concernd and I hope you learnt something
EDIT: I thought of something else I wanted to add about autism! If it is discovered early you can specialize education and stuff to learn neurotypical behavior and thereby that individual can fit  better in society.

My Journal: My Journey
Tumblr media
Week 1: Wednesday, September 4, 2019
The more you know the more you know you don’t know - Aristotle
I arrived in Canada on August 10, 2019 and had been looking forward to another exciting chapter in my education. The first class for this course GSE 510: Academic Reading and Writing was on September 4, 2019. As I made my way to the campus I kept wondering what the personality of the lecturer would be. Charismatic? Assertive? Friendly disposition? I found out it was an online course once I arrived at Nicholls room 310. Together with a group of 11 confused students we huddled around the two computers in the room for the class. Luckily for us a colleague was able to set up the big screen in the class just as the lecturer, Professor Mitchel Mc Lamon-Silk started teaching. There were initial issues with sound and feedback from the class but eventually the class ended successfully and we were generally introduced to the course. As I made my way out of Bishop’s University on my way home that night, these words kept ringing a bell in my years: “Remember how you entered; be proud of how you leave”. I just learned a new word on day one: epistemological! 😊😊 Allons-y!
 Week 2: Wednesday, September 14, 2019
There is only one good…knowledge and only one evil…ignorance- Socrates
I completed reading the preface and chapter 1 of Giltrow. A bit difficult to digest at times but I have the impression that this is the time for me to ask probing questions and take risks as I prepare to apply the necessary academic and non-academic pieces. The online class started with minimal technical hitches. Style and genre were the key areas of discussion. My colleagues gave different ways they understood style and genre but in my opinion genre determines the style to be used when writing. For example, I can post classified advertisements online or in the print media without using a dictionary, thinking about margins, spacing, font size or use of abbreviations. Practically free style. I was in a group with Todd, Kim, David and Gretchan and we had to put in practice what we just learnt about genre form chapter one. We wrote a hotel review which gave us an opportunity to use a humoristic yet mundane style to complete the review. Another interesting class. 😎 Genial!
  Week 3: Wednesday, September 18, 2019
“There is no method of knowing when one has reached the truth, or when one is closer to it than before.” Rorty, 1983
My understanding of academic writing and reading is gradually getting clearer. I spent hours reading Cleo H. Cherryholmes’s piece on academic writing in preparation for the class. I am also beginning to get a grasp of the academic community’s code of writing and the textual complexity I have to grapple with especially when reading most of the reading materials for the course. For example supporting arguments raised in research findings, questioning or challenging others and raising new areas of interest for discussion.
Another area which has not generally attracted my attention over the years is the prevalence of patriarchy across many literary genres and the implicit or explicit gender bias towards feminism during my reading. The linguistic privilege of the masculine for in French, Spanish and English grammar is well known but can anything be done about it in the 21st century? Are researchers adequately addressing these issues? 🤓
I can still recollect one of my former French lecturers (from France) when I was in college who always had a slogan during grammar lessons...”en grammaire l’homme est fort” (The man is strong in grammar). 💪 From a historique perspective, the Académie Française, the pre-eminent French council for matters pertaining to the French language was officially established in 1635. Since it was established it has had 732 member out of which only a paltry 9 have been women. A clear case of androcentrism perpetuated for centuries not only in the French language but in other romance languages.

Week 4 : Wednesday, September 25, 2019 Audience
Tumblr media
I  started reading chapter 4 before  the class...quite long. I  gathered that social routines make it easier for  us to communicate primarily because  we  are  familiar with our audience. However, how do we  define audience? This is  what  we  discussed  in our  group.  We did  not come out with a clear definition but we all agreed  an audience is  the recipient  of a specific  message. This discussion additionally took us  back  to the relationship between genre and audience.
Week 5: Wednesday, October 2, 2019. Coloring Epistemologies
Tumblr media
Patti Lather’s text on paradigm proliferation was difficult to read so I had to read it twice before understanding her arguments and her message. She argued that researchers should have the ability to navigate the constantly changing landscape of educational research. Additionally, she called for an understanding and tolerance of diverse epistemological perspectives and methodologies, especially in the field of education. She referred to this as an “epistemology of emancipation”. I strongly believe in this call to move educational research in many different directions in the hope that more interesting and useful ways of learning would eventually emerge. This is a reflection of Giltrow chapter 3 which encourages writers to take a position as they write. I look forward to doing just this in my academic writing.
Week 6:Wednesday, October 9, 2019
Scholarly styles and the discursive I.
“Writing in the first person helps to make clear the author's role in constructing rather than discovering the story/knowledge.” ― Gayle Letherby , Feminist Research in Theory and Practice.
Tumblr media
My main topic of interest for the week was scholarly styles and the discursive I. Reading some of the scholarly texts for this course has been challenging especially with reference to Patti Lather and the contextual complexity of her writing. This scholarly style of writing tends to be exclusionary and elitist in my opinion. Trying to derive meaning from such material can be painstaking, challenging and frustrating sometimes especially if I have to consult a dictionary every few minutes.
Tumblr media
Oko: after reading Patti Lather...
Tumblr media
Another scholarly style which can be difficult to read is agentless writing or heavily nominal sentences. Noun phrases or noun strings bear a heavy load and can easily lead to ambiguity and the loss of meaning especially to the average reader looking for simple information.
There appears to be divided opinions with regard to the use of the discursive I. However, I strongly believe that writers in the scholarly style should be allowed to have some latitude in the use of the discursive I.  I believe that the absence of this technique erases elements of identity, the ability to predict or forecast based on the writer’s personal experience or observation.
All these points discussed will help shape my writing style as I keep my audience in mind throughout the period of my academic writing at Bishop’s.
WEEK 7: OCTOBER 16, 2019
RHETORICAL TECHNIQUES: ETHOS, PATHOS, LOGOS.
youtube
The use of rhetorical devices such as ethos, pathos and logos was one of the important topics of the week. In addition to the video we watched in class, this video I uploaded even makes it easier for me to understand the use of these three techniques in writing or in speeches. Another important take from this week is the technique for citation in academic writing. It was an area I always found tricky and challenging but I am now ready to explore the technique to make my writing acceptable at the graduate level. I especially appreciate the way Prof Mitchell took his time to walk the class through the appropriate steps when citing in academic writing using a chapter from his PhD thesis. Bravo Monsieur! 🥇🥇
Reading the text, “A kind word for Bullshit” was fun. 😂😂Probably the most interesting article about academic writing I’ve ever read. So is academe the mother lode of bullshit? Is academic writing bullshit of the worst kind? Is bullshitting a male genre? And is the aim of academic writing to ex-communicate certain readers? I will ponder over these questions for a long time.
Based on the importance of this week’s class and reading I will have another look at my Critical Response paper and make amendments and corrections. The learning process and consolidation of different writing genres is becoming more and more practical to me.
WEEK 8: WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2019.
The greatest of all pleasures is the pleasure of learning- Aristotle.
More on rhetorical concepts and writing tips.
Tumblr media
After weeks of classes, head scratching, reading and assignments, the chips of academic writing are finally falling in place for me. This is another important week in the process of developing my writing skills even further. Last week was a pivotal point but the reinforcements this week have even added more ammo to my writing arsenal.
 Notable tips for this week
1. Using short headings as I write
2. Supporting an argument I raised with detailed information, supported with citations.
3. Putting my unique and independent perspectives in my arguments.(Discursive I)
4. Citing other sources to support an argument (which I generally overlook).
5. Giving an account of something new I learnt in any reading.
6. Including the educational value of the text.
7.Avoiding sweeping generalizations.
8.Defining key terms when they first appear.
9. Staying within the word limit.
10. Taking APA very serious at all levels of my work. (My Achilles heel)
With this in mind I realized I could have avoided several mistakes when I did my critical response assignment. I will certainly take everything I have studied so far into consideration as I go over my critical response paper and make the necessary improvements.
Aristotle stated that the greatest of all pleasures is the pleasure of learning. It’s been a real pleasure for me as I have learnt so much within a relatively short period of time at Bishop’s and especially in all my three interesting courses  since the beginning of the semester. Prof Mitchel has been very patient and encouraging throughout this journey.  With this rich and insightful course on academic writing, I hope to continuously strive to maintain acceptable academic writing standards with my target audience in mind at all times. Hasta la vista...

How to start learning Finnish
I get asks every once in a while to recommend resources for beginners, so I thought of sharing what I started with and what I generally find useful for beginners.
Here is my resource post with all links and downloads I’ve collected so far, if you’re looking for specific things. If you know of anything I didn’t include, let me know and I will. :)
1. Apps
The first thing I used was the Finnish Fun Easy Learn 5000 words app. It teaches you words in different categories with various exercises (recognizing the words after hearing, writing them down, find the mistake, etc.), so it’s a good app for learning words in context. It also helped me to recognize various patterns in words that were helpful later. (also this was before I seriously started learning Finnish, so kind of a warm-up exercise).
Other similar apps are 6000 words also from Fun Easy Learn (it’s not actually 6k because you’ll have to pay for the full version) which has a similar structure with the added bonus that you can also practise saying the words and the app will tell you if it was good or not.
50 languages is also popular, again with various exercises to practise. (this personally didn’t work for me but mostly because my tablet kept crashing so that’s not to say others won’t like it)
So, a good idea to use some apps every day or maybe once a week, depending on what method you find best for learning. They can be a good extra practice if you want to focus on e.g. learning from a book.
2. Books
Language learning always starts with books, right? It’s always a good idea to have a grammar book, especially for Finnish. It will explain all you need to know and you can also practise. At least this method works for me.
Teach Yourself is probably one of the most popular books, I hear many people using and liking it. (The one on the link is an earlier edition, but just as good as the new one - I bought the hard copy). It’s a “classic” language book with topics, situations, grammar, vocab and exercises. There is also audio so perfect for getting an idea about speaking too.
Take a look at my resource list for more books, there are also links to various resource folders where you can download lots more. Maybe a different book will work for you, but I think this one is a good start. Whichever you chose, I definitely recommend using a book, at least for grammar.
3. Online resources
"There is no Finnish on Duolingo!” you will probably hear if you decide to learn Finnish. True, but there are other apps and sites you can use similarly, even if they not as “interactive” as Duolingo. Again, check the links to find something you like. :) There are some sites like Mondly or Mango that have premium features, so the free version is only a couple of lessons. Wasn’t worth for me so instead I tried to find others. The only two sites I use for Finnish at the moment are Memrise and Clozemaster.
Memrise is quite popular, mostly for vocab, even if you just choose one of the “most frequent words” courses, you can practise a bit every day and learn some new words that will surely turn up elsewhere. I did the beginner’s course first, it’s great even if you start a grammar book at the same time. Later you might find different courses that fit your needs.
Clozemaster is probably not the best for a total beginner, but after a bit it’s useful. You have to fill in the missing word in various sentences. The good thing is that these are sentences you might use in real life and contain very frequent words plus you learn in context and the grammar rules will turn up too. There is a multiple choice option which is good for beginners, later I switched to just adding the word by myself. You can play on various levels and the sentences repeat (so you can “master” them) so it’s also a good daily practice.
I didn’t have time yet to try more apps, but I will post about them when I do.
4. Immersion
Another thing you hear often as a language learner: Immerse yourself in the language! Read, write, watch movies in your target language, etc... so, how to do this with Finnish?
Reading
Again, check out the resources - there are some downloads and sites with children’s books which are probably the best starting point. They are easy and you can start recognizing things on your own and understanding more of the text. Believe me, you’ll get bored with it, but at first it’s a good feeling to say: Wow, I’m at the level of a Finnish four-year-old! :D Later you might want to read more complex books or Harry Potter or whatever, if you can and want, maybe buy some actual Finnish books :)
Also useful to read news and maybe Wikipedia articles on things that you’re interested in.
Writing
You might have to write some sentences during the exercises in your grammar book, so after a while you’ll be able to construct sentences on your own. Try writing short things at first, maybe a few lines about your day or choose a topic you’ve already learnt about. You can keep a diary or just post on your blog and others might correct it. It’s a good idea to write as often as you can, as early as you can, then you recognize the areas you have to improve in and go back to certain things if needed.
What to watch and listen
Youtube videos - check the resource list for some recommendations :)
TV programmes - again some links there, some probably have subtitles, but even without those you can just listen and see how much you understand, even if it sounds like nothing at first (an important part of language learning is falling in love with the language before you understand it, so just listening to it casually will make you love it even more and it also helps with listening to how people actually speak). You might find some cartoons/kid’s programmes as well which are probably easier to understand at first.
Music - just jump in and find Finnish artists you like and listen to them 24/7 and eventually you’ll pick out some words or try to learn the lyrics if you like (most of my Swedish learning was song lyrics for a long time) which helps learn a lot of vocab in context so you’ll remember better.
Disney songs - assume you know some Disney songs already, just listen to the Finnish version and similarly to music, it will help you learn more.
Watch movies - when you feel brave enough :D Also, watch movies you already know like Disney or others (if you can find them in Finnish) Again, you don’t have to understand everything, you know what the movie is about so try to pick out some familiar words.
Listen to the radio - again good for music and maybe some random speaking programmes
5. Tumblr
Make a langblr :D You can post about your progress, collect resources, practise writing and have others correct it, make friends and help others. You can find some of my favourite blogs in this post.
Tumblr is also good for finding random Finnish content and learning more about Finland and the culture. One way or the other you’ll find some Finnish blogs with interesting content and maybe eventually understand the weird memes they’re sharing :D Because let’s not forget, learning about your target language’s culture is important, and with Finnish it’s great fun because there are so many great things about Finland and Finnish culture.
6. General things
Some final pieces of advice based on my experience:
Don’t listen to the “OMG, Finnish is so hard” comments. Once you get the hang of it, it is just as easy as you make it to be. :)
Don’t be afraid to speak! Even if you just read out the dialogues from your book, words from Memrise or whatever, practise speaking. If you know native speakers and you’re not afraid to talk to them, do! :D
Practise every day (just like with any other language) - even if just a little, small progress is progress :)
Don’t get discouraged by the amount of grammar or unknown words or people who say it’s too hard. Just study in your own pace, try different methods, learn from the mistakes you make and try again. It will work!
This is all I can think of at the moment. Let me know if you have any questions and I will make more posts on different resources. And of course, good luck with learning Finnish! We’ll all get there one day!

Hi! I was wondering if you could give some tips on learning korean? I have learnt the alphabet but i don't really know how to continue now... Do you have any tips for this? (I know you say you're a beginner but let's be real you know more than i do) Thank you!
Hi anon~! Thank  you for your question!
I assume there are more people who have this question, so this will be a long post. Please do keep in mind that I am not an expert in learning languages or Korean for that matter, and I learn languages as a hobby so these will just be my personal tips and recommentations!
Where to start?
So as you mentioned you already taught yourself Hangul, the Korean alphabet. To those just starting out I would recommend starting with Hangul as you did, because many have said it before me, but I will say it again: learning Korean through romanized text only is very difficult. You will sabotage your own progress by doing this, because romanization of Korean is very variable and confusing at times. Please take a couple of hours in your first week to fully master reading and writing the script before you continue learning. It will help you a lot!!
Together with this you’ll want to work on pronunciation. Don’t worry or feel bad when it doesn’t sound well the first few times. Just keep trying. I recommend listening (see a little further down for some resources): pausing after sentences and repeating them. Imitation after all is one of the most important ways in which a human learns!
When it comes to theory, I think it’s best to follow online courses or buy textbooks that fit to your way of learning. You can also learn from separate resources but generally books/websites have a set order in which you learn things - and these orders are there because you need to know certain things before you can understand other things, so I recommend you just follow a series of lessons.
 Online Theory Resources
I personally use the website howtostudykorean.com. It is completely free (except for the PDF files and exercise books, which go for a couple dollars a piece - which is still cheap AF tbh) and I really like the way and extend in which concepts are explained. The concepts are explained in such a way that you always understand WHY a piece of grammar works in the way it does, which I think is one of its strong points. I strongly recommend this website for learning Korean and I personally feel like this site as pretty much everything you need to get a good theoretical grasp. It starts on complete beginner level and extends out to hanja lessons even, so 10/10 points to them.
I have also tried Talk To Me In Korean (TTMIK) which seems to be really popular amongst most Korean learners but personally, I think the concepts aren’t explained very thoroughly and the way they explain the material makes me feel like a small child. BUT I am really positive about their YouTube channel so make sure to check that out!
Talking about YouTube, there are loads of interesting channels that can help you out! Some of my personal favorites are the TTMIK channel and the ever-sweet and funny Korean Unnie!
I think these are the most popular websites for learning Korean and I am about 99,99% sure that you won't need any textbooks if you use these, really.
Tumblr is also a really nice source of vocabulary lists andpeer-teached grammar lessons, and there is also a nice amount ofcultural lessons if you search good enough. Do pay attention though, because these types of materials are more likely to contain mistakesor typos. Besides that Tumblr is a really nice community to come intocontact with lots of other (Korean) language learners!
So. Besides getting your share of theory you will need practice. Especially if you don't live amongst Koreans (which I assume you don't) you will need to fill that up.  How do we do that?
Listening
For practicing listening there are a couple things you can do.
Listen to Korean radio and/or K-pop
Korean radio is a good source of naturally occuring speech. Make sure you put on a station that has a DJ that talks (some stations just play music). You get commentary, interviews, conversations and as a bonus you get to listen to Korean music.
Korean listening exercises
You can find plenty of listening exercises on YouTube. Maybe give these a try:
- Korean Class 101
- TTMIK Listening in Slow Korean series
- TTMIK IYAGI - Natural Conversations in 100% Korean
Korean videos/TV/dramas
The internet offers access to loads of Korean video material. You can check out Korean TV programs (Running Man is very popular) or dramas (try Viki.com). Another way I like to incorporate listening practice into my learning is by watching Korean youtubers. The more popular channels are likely to have both English and Korean subs so that might help you out.
Speaking
The best way to learn to speak Korean naturally, fast is of course to talk to Korean speakers. Finding someone to chat with if you have no Korean friends can be somewhat of a challenge. My university organizes monthly 'language cafe's' that bring together students  who are learning another language. Try searching for something similar in your own neighborhood. If you really can come into contact with native speakers, I recommend trying apps such as HelloTalk. I personally really like this app and have already earned a new friends because of it. It allows users to come into contact with others who are learning another language, and are willing to teach their own language to others. It is chat based but if you want to, you can also send voice messages or call.
Reading
As someone who doesn't have English as a first language, I canconfirm that reading is one of the best ways to gain proficiency in alanguage. It provides you with lots of vocabulary and makes youfamiliar with sentence structure, grammatical rules and more. Trystarting with simple texts such as children's books and slowly try towork your way up to news articles, short texts and ultimately actual(simple) books. A simple google search quiry will get you to loads ofKorean news pages and  downloadable kids' books.
Other tools I use
Website: Naver English Dictionary
Basically the holy grail for Korean language learners. Gives you excellent detailed definitions and translations for both korean-english and english-korean. It also provides you with tons of example sentences, common word combinations, and my personal favorite: V-LIVE subtitles that have the word you searched in them. This function is AMAZING because you get to see how a certain word is being used in real, actual conversations. You can even click a link to go to the original video so you can hear the pronunciation and the context (conversation) in which it was used. Actual gold.
App: Rieul Korean (Android)
My go-to dictionary app. Has a link to four different online dictionaries (DAUM English, Naver English, DAUM Korean and Naver Korean), a vocab lookup section with hanja testing function, a conjugation section, pronunciation section, numbers section and a section on Korean idioms.
App: K'way and Grammar Haja (Android)
Both apps that explain grammar theory. Not recommended for learning but very handy to have as a reference.
App: TOPIK ONE (android)
Lets you take a fake version of the TOPIK I exam. Gives simple feedback. Very handy to keep track of your progress and to practice for the TOPIK exam if you plan to take that.
App: 라디오 한국 FM (Radio Hanguk) (android)
Just a very simple app with a list of Korean radio stations. I like listening to NCT Night Night on SBS Power FM!
These printable handwriting sheets - for giving your handwriting a fancy boost
Tips & Tricks
I like to set devices and applications to Korean to get some more exposure to the language. You can set sites like Google to Korean. The nice thing about this is that you learn new words that are used mostly online such as “닫기” (close) and “구독” (subscribe).
Try keeping a language journal. It is a fun way to bring your knowledge in to practice. I am actually making a post on that right now so keep an eye on my blog if you want to read it!
Get a study buddy. Nothing motivates better than a healthy dose of mutual support and a slight dose of pressure, hehe.
Study regularly, daily if you can. Even if it’s just half an hour a day, try to keep your study sessions consistant. Adapt the amount of time you put into the language based on your schedule and the goals you want to achieve. Want to keep up a decent conversation within a year? Plan on at least 8 hours a week.

7 Ways Of Improving Your Email Outreach Strategy For A Better Conversion Rate
Email outreach is a pillar of successful SEO in the UAE and global digital marketing. According to a recent article published by the magazine Forbes, this is unlikely to change soon.
To this day, emails are considered the most personal yet professional means of reaching out to relatives, colleagues and even strangers. In fact, they can be an extension of their own to the standard Guide To Technical SEO. However, if you are experienced in this field, you probably know how disappointing the conversion rate for most email outreach campaigns can be. Fortunately, things aren’t entirely hopeless; with just a little tweaking you can guarantee that your outreach leads to, at the very least, strong backlinks and at most, long-run joint-ventures.
If you are struggling to gain from your outreach emails, you probably are failing in one of the 7 departments mentioned below. This guide will take you through the basics you will have learnt in your digital marketing technique, as well as a few tips experts have conjured after years of observing and interacting with the market.
1. Honesty
No one wants to be called a liar, however many generic outreach messages cast their senders as deceitful. Are you inflating truths to appeal to the recipient of your email? This is probably more blatant than you think. The SEO agency in Dubai you approach for your digital marketing should maintain credibility in all its communications.
For perspective, consider standard motivations for reaching out to other pages. Most often, they are driven by the popularity of the page, which means that the person running it is likely to deal with emails like yours several times a day. For this reason, they are likely to be sensitive to even the mildest lies, as they will appear like sloppy, lazy marketing from the sender.
While you may think it encouraging to begin your email with expressions such as “I am a huge fan of your site…” or “I’ve loved your stuff for years”, you may want to formulate a message closer to the truth. “Huge fans” are usually spotted by site admins relatively quickly; either through email subscription or past post interactions. Therefore, if you are not one, there is no need to pretend otherwise - this will have your email immediately sent to spam. Instead, look for a more authentic approach by pinpointing a post you may have enjoyed, as well as the reasons you did.
2. Not Asking For Too Much
According to the experts over on Quicksprout, emails are often considered by successful digital marketers as a chore to tackle as quickly as possible before getting to the “real work”. This means that the more tedious and lengthy the task you ask your email recipient to perform, the less likely they are to even consider helping you. Instead, ask yourself how you can do most of the work for them, only requesting their seal of approval. For instance, you may want to provide them with a quick summary of relevant, selected content you think they may enjoy. You will then need to tell them why you believe this content would be a perfect match to their audience and provide quotable text they could use to reference you in their next article.
3. Being Unique
No, this does not mean being excessively friendly, comedic or entertaining in your email. Instead, you will want to approach an angle you believe your email recipient isn’t familiar with, or has rarely come across. For example, you may want to include phrases such as “the only guide which” or “the sole comprehensive article on [insert topic] available online”. Naturally, these claims need to be true. Therefore, you should make sure that the content you send out for experts to curate and possibly include in their own articles is indeed unique. You should choose niche or emerging subjects, giving them an appealing twist to entice most audiences. These are the articles you will want to tell your prospective project partner about to earn backlinks.
4. Make Initial Contact
The Skyscraper technique is among the most popular in digital marketing because it is effective. However, it can also require lengthy, patient work which most self-sustaining digital marketers cannot afford. The cold outreach method, in particular, will encourage you to send about 1000 outreach emails to earn 50-100 mentions and links. While this may seem like a relatively high conversion rate, it applies more accurately to a period in which template outreach emails were borderline acceptable. However, this is no longer the case - as you will read about further below. Instead, to increase your conversion rate from 5-10% to 30-40%, you may want to reach out to people who actually know you. Much like in daily life, people are more willing to help out once an initial connection has been made. Use social media to reach out to bloggers, comment on the posts of articles you enjoy and if possibly, attend networking events of experts in your industry. This will enable you to reach out to people you actually know, who will in turn be more willing to assist you. You can then achieve the same 50-100 backlinks with about 300 emails or less.
5. Personalize Each Email
As mentioned above, templates are a thing of the past. Most people are flooded with at least a couple forms of marketing emails daily. Therefore, there is now minimal patience for the “lazy” work of copy-pasting an email to many recipients. Instead, you will want to write emails which are at least 50% personalized to every individual recipient. You will want to keep only formalities and closing words the same across the board. A lack of personalization is extremely easy to spot and will usually cost you dearly.
6. No Typos
This point requires little explanation, but substantial emphasis: typos will make you appear unprofessional. To make your content appear credible to someone who is not familiar with it, you will need impeccable grammar, syntax and fluent/comfortable use of your chosen language. Without flawless text, most successful digital marketers are unlikely to take you seriously. So proofread, proofread, proofread!
7. Make The Subject Interested
It doesn’t take an expert in psychology to note that most people are immediately interested in conversations which center around them. In the workplace, particularly, parties will need to know what they will personally gain before considering giving you assistance. For this reason, you will need to make your email all about the recipient. You will need to state - reasonably - how you feel they may gain from partnering with you, citing your or promoting you with frequent allusions to their site’s themes and tone. Take the time to research each subject, or at the very least their site or blog, before you email them.
A Concluding Note
When writing outreach emails, you need to think of your recipient as a unique individual looking to be interested before they are willing to help. A skilled digital marketer should know that personalization and professionalism both go a long way, therefore not to trade either for easy, mass outreach campaigns.

Days 5 & 6
Okay - I’m shit and forgot to blog yesterday - MY BAD.
Thursday 9th November 2017
So today was the first day of me taking a TESOL lesson. And yes it was linked to Harry Potter - Fantastic Beasts for those who want to be picky! (IT’S STILL PART OF THE HARRY POTTER WORLD PEOPLE!) Nick, Linsey and I had to catch the 9:40 train from Firenze SMN to Borgo San Lorenzo. I was quite grateful for the time to sit and calm down - with every passing minute my anxiety grew! Once we arrived at the school all I had to do was finish the Communicative Activity part of my lesson plan and then print everything - simples?? No. No it was not. I went to try and print my documents (which consisted of 4 copies of my lesson plan, 7 copies of the 7 different texts, 7 copies of the comprehension questions, 7 copies of the creature profile questions and 7 copies of the creature profile template). And guess what - they wouldn’t open on the computer at the school. I instantly went into panic mode. I then suddenly thought....wait a minute, I saved them on my One Drive, I can access them online! So I went to log in to my One Drive, but I couldn‘t figure out how to get the @ symbol...in the end Kristin had to do it for me. By the time I had printed and sorted out all of the paperwork there was no time for a (much needed!) run through!
As I watched Nick doing his lesson I soon realised that my lesson was far too complex for the B1 students. (In hindsight I wish I had stuck to my guns and had confidence in my original idea as that would have been perfect for this group of students - but as they say, hindsight is a beautiful thing!) I started off my lesson by introducing myself and running over the Students' names and then said “watch this video and after, tell me what you saw” I then proceeded to play the video. I thought everything was okay until a student said I don’t understand anything and folded her arms looking completely uninterested. I then muted the video and while saying look not listen I pointed to my eyes and then the screen, she then understood.
I found it difficult to elicit my pre-taught vocabulary which was: creature//threatened/razor-sharp/fang/beak/twig/drag/troublemaker/cocoons/silky/-like (ape-like/cat-like/etc.) However, when I went to teach fang I gave them the example of teeth - they didn’t know that word. For -like I gave them the example of ape-like but they didn’t understand the word ape. So as you can probably guess, I got flustered. More than flustered. I spent that long explaining my vocabulary that it through the lesson plan completely.
I got emotional (yes, again) towards the end of my lesson as Kristin had to step in to tell me I only had five minutes left and that I should move onto my communicative activity. Thank god she said something or I would have missed out on doing it and then I would have failed my terminal objective for the lesson...which was: By the end of the lesson students will be able to use pre-taught vocabulary in order to engage in an information relay communicative activity, where one student will choose a descriptive word from a deck of flashcards and form sentences using the word to describe their creature to their partner while the other student creates the Creature Profile.
At the end of the lesson a few of the students stayed behind to say thank you and told me that they enjoyed the lesson which I was extremely grateful for and a weight was instantly lifted off my shoulders.
At the end of the day...although my lesson didn’t go as I had planned it to - I still did it. I have actually given my first lesson. I have learnt so much from today and I have a lot to improve on but hey, it’s a good job I like a challenge.
The moral from today: MAN UP & BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!
Friday 10th November 2017
Today was the first day of our grammar lessons: The Verb, Language Analysis or Time, Aspect, Mood and Modality.
I don't really know how to tell you how they went apart from say that they made me feel exceptionally bad about myself and ‘lack‘ of knowledge and understanding. There are so many segments that come under the verb; Lexical which then leads onto copular and action, and then auxiliary which leads on to primary and modals. Then there are habitual actions, general truths, present (temporary) state and permanent state. We also learnt that there are actually TWO NOT THREE tenses in English language: past and present and that the tense changes the verb’s morphological structure and phonetics. Finally we moved onto hypotheticals where you might use PAST TENSE but PRESENT TIME: “If I BOUGHT a coat, I wouldn’t BE cold“.
Even now as I type this I can honestly say that I still don’t understand all of it. I‘m definitely going to have to read through all my notes and sheets at my own pace and create flashcards and posters! One thing that bugged me about the lessons today was the ratio of TTT and STT. Now it would have been obvious to anyone who attended this lesson that our teacher was truly passionate about grammar. But, sometimes I felt like we were being spoken at rather than to. Every explanation that they gave was far too complex for me - maybe it was over complicated...I don’t know!? But there was very little to and from during the lessons.
Don’t get me wrong...they were all interesting lessons, but I just feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information we received today. And yes, I know I am doing an intensive course and should have expected it....but I didn’t think it would have gone into SO MUCH DETAIL! For someone who‘s first language is English I fell like I have let Britain, and all of my schools down with my lack of knowledge and understanding. Because the amount of detail we went into today was never something that I have ever done back home...maybe it is something that should be covered in the future though?
Little side note for this evening. So as I mentioned above I left todays lessons feeling as though I had wasted an entire day because I didn’t learn anything due to not understanding it. Well my classmate and flatmate Linsey (I finally spelt it right!) taught me about Lexical, Auxiliary (Primary & Modal), Action, Copular, Transitive, Intransitive, Monotransitive and Ditransitive....and I actually now UNDERSTAND it ALL!!!! And I didn’t think I’d say that! So thank you for your wisdom Linsey! Definitely says a lot about the explanation(al) approach to todays lessons...over complicated!

Everything You Need to Study Jordanian Arabic
I've been living in Jordan for a little over four months, and I'm pleased to say that I seem to have converted what Syrian/Lebanese colloquial Arabic I learnt in the past into the Jordanian dialect.
Along the way, I've used various resources and watched various materials that have really helped. This blog post will be my review of what is available for the student of the Jordanian dialect.
Lots of people say that you can just choose 'Levantine' and that's enough. "You don't need to specialise any further than that," I've heard on a number of occasions. My experience is that the country-level distinctions between Jordanian, Syrian and Lebanese Arabic actually do matter, particularly once you get past the pure basics and want to have more natural conversations.
For various reasons, Jordanian dialect resources are under-represented in the market for books and audio resources. They're either subsumed under the 'Levantine' bracket or books generally tend to offer Syrian or Lebanese flavours. It is for this reason that I think it's worth taking stock and gathering together all the resources available for students hoping to travel to Jordan or make a study of the specific dialect spoken here.
Being the last somewhat-calm country in the non-Gulf non-north-African Arab-speaking world, it's a preferred destination for year-abroad students mid-university. I think this resource list will be especially useful for them.
How to Use These Resources
There are a lot of books and resources listed below. The expectation is not that you'll go through them all, but that you should rather be aware of what is out there. There aren't really many options for textbooks, so you're basically stuck with Hakini Arabi. (Good thing it's a well-designed course, with lots of dialogue and practice). I'd recommend the serious student of Jordanian Arabic get hold of both Tiedemann's 101 Verbs book and Diwan Baladna. Both are filled with material you'll find nowhere else. (See below for details on these books).
As for the rest, pick and choose: watch a comedy show; do some listening practice exercises; take an iTalki lesson with someone from Jordan. Those final steps are up to you, and depend a lot more on your goals and how fast you want to go.
If you'd like one-on-one mentoring/coaching in your journey to learn Jordanian dialect (and/or standard written Arabic), have a read of what I offer and get in touch with me.
For a one-stop-shop guide to improving your Arabic and getting beyond the intermediate level, particularly for students who've studied for a year or two already, read my new book, Master Arabic.
Grammar
Jordanian Arabic Grammar: A Short Guide for Beginners (Peace Corps)
This is a useful overview of the main grammatical features of the language. The grammar covered is very basic, but it is nice to have it all in one place.
CGE Jordan's Videos (YouTube)
CGE Jordan Institute for Arabic Studies have also published an indispensable book (see below), but these are their videos. They teach the kinds of things you'll never find in a book, and they also practice them in pairs. They also have material for intermediate and advanced students, like this video in which Fred teaches how to intensify your sentences:
If you learn best from watching videos and have the time to wade through hours and hours of short lessons, this is probably an excellent place to start. I spoke with the director of CGE, in many of the videos, for the premium edition of 'Master Arabic'.
Textbooks
Hakini Arabi: Palestinian and Jordanian Colloquial for Beginners
This is your only option for a full textbook covering Jordanian dialect for beginners. It is taught as if you haven't necessarily studied any other Arabic before, so parts of it move a little slow, but that's a minor quibble. The book comes with a link to audio files that you download online, and these are essential for working through the dialogues and listening exercises. There are lots of group role-playing exercises suggested in the book, but even if you're studying on your own this is a valuable one-stop shop to work through.
Different parts of Jordan speak slightly different sub-dialects, and this book offers options for three varieties: 'Jordanian', 'Palestinian-Rural' and 'Jordanian and Palestinian-Urban'. For an idea of the kinds of materials contained within, here's an example of a vocabulary list from early on:
and here's an example of a context/phrasal explainer from towards the end of the book:
For a total beginner, I would certainly start with Hakini Arabi. One of the first things I did after moving to Amman was to go through this book.
Living Arabic: A Comprehensive Introductory Course
Living Arabic is part of the Munther Younes Arabic-tuition empire. He generally produces solid materials and though I've never seen a copy of this book, I've been told by a number of students that it contains useful materials for Jordanian Arabic. The text teaches MSA alongside colloquial, so this may not be totally suited to your goals. Perhaps the best scenario for this is if you get a chance to use it in a library. You can probably work your way through the Jordanian Arabic sections in a few days/weeks.
Words and Sentences
Diwan Baladna: The Unprecedented Spoken Arabic Dictionary
This is a thematic dictionary and phrasebook for Jordanian Arabic. I hesitated to buy this for a long time on account of its cover, but I saw it in a bookshop and the content is really excellent. It comes with an audio CD, though that is problematic since few computers come with CD readers; I hope the authors will make the data available for download as well in the near future.
The first part of the book is filled with expressions, phrases, phrase + answer combinations and other materials that you don't usually find, even in books specialising in colloquial readers. Here is an example of phrases that come with certain responses:
and here are some expressions from their very rich selection, also showing the explanations and how the book makes them very easy to use/pick up:
The rest of the book is filled with thematically-organised vocab lists (sorted into Arabic / translation / Arabic plural columns). It's useful to have them all in one place, I suppose, and to know that these are what Jordanians use (as opposed to Lebanese or Syrian speakers of Arabic), but the real value of the book is the expressions and phrases contained in the first half.
Jordan Dialect (Memrise Course + Audio)
I include this not because the word selection is particularly amazing but simply because it seems to be the only course on Memrise (the vocabulary-learning platform) that teaches Jordanian dialect alongside the audio files. There are lots of other courses offered, including some by students currently in Amman, but none of them offer audio files as well. There are only 736 words available to learn, but it's all Jordanian dialect. To my mind, this course is low-hanging fruit. Someone's made a great selection of vocabulary, most of which you'll use at some point, so I'd recommend just working your way through it relatively quickly.
The 101 Most Used Verbs in Spoken Arabic: Jordan & Palestine
This book is more than just a guide to using verbs in Jordanian Arabic. It's a repository of sentences and their translations that comes with a CD filled with pronunciation. (As with other books, I really wish CGE would offer the files as digital downloads, since I and most others don't have a CD reader/drive).
The title is actually really deceptive, and I held off getting a copy for far too long because I thought it was just lists of verbs. It is, but at the same time it's a rich trove of sentences, phrases and associated vocabulary. I'd say this book is pretty much essential for anyone who wants to learn Jordanian Arabic. Take a look at this page, for example, to see the kind of thing 101 Verbs contains:
It's a fantastic mix of phrases, sentences, vocabulary and literal translation or explanation. There are also useful appendices and introductory materials about the grammar of the Arabic verb, lists of broken plurals and various indexes so you can look things up as well.
I spoke with the author of the book (and director of CGE) for the premium edition of 'Master Arabic'.
Basic Phrasebook - Jordanian Arabic (WikiTravel)
This is nothing more than a list of useful phrases, but as a way to pick up some essentials, this is a free and easy option.
Pre-Departure Arabic Materials (PeaceCorps)
There are also audio files associated with this document. This is a basic overview of some situations that an English-speaker might encounter in Amman, and offers some basic grammar and vocabulary alongside phrases and cultural explanation. Nothing advanced here, but ideal for total beginners or visitors.
Conversational Arabic Quick and Easy: Jordanian Dialect
I'd advise you to stay away from this book. It's sold on Amazon and seems to be frequently suggested as a 'suggested purchase' when you buy anything else relating to Jordanian Arabic. Unfortunately, the contents are not very useful. The book also does not use Arabic script; it is all transliterated. Caveat emptor.
The Arabic Student: Jordanian Arabic
These are all the posts from 'The Arabic Student's blog relating to the Jordanian dialect. It was last updated in 2013, but as a resource it's extremely useful, and he covers a numbers of explanations of phrases, grammar and other interesting features of the dialect. Posts often discuss specific videos (or sections of videos) in detail, so it's a great place to get a taste for the unique features of the dialect alongside some entertainment and comedy.
Listening / Video
Jordanian Dialect Podcast (Soundcloud)
I co-host this podcast together with Lina Obeidat. We discuss a new topic each week. Show notes include translations of difficult words. The idea behind this podcast was to have some materials available for intermediate students that weren't too difficult, but at the same time didn't dumb things down by using too much English and so on. Details on how to subscribe are available here, or just follow us on Soundcloud.
Talk In Arabic
Talk In Arabic is a great resource for those who want spoken materials in the various dialects of the Arab-speaking world. The Levantine Dialect section contains a few dozen videos and audio lessons in Jordanian dialect alongside thematically-organised vocabulary lists. Everything is available as audio files (with transcripts and translations) so this is a useful service. Note that the site isn't updated that often, so you might find you can make use of all the materials in a month or two.
Female Show (Roya)
This is a fun comedy starring comedy superstars, Tima Shomali and Raja'ee Qawwas. I've watched the three seasons of this show through from start to finish and learnt a lot in the process. The level is suitable for an intermediate-level speaker. I'd recommend starting at with season 1, episode 1, to give it a try:
Usfuriyya (Roya)
This is a medical comedy set in Jordan. Think Scrubs, or think someone trying to imitate Scrubs in the Middle East. The Arabic is also at an appropriate level for someone who has a year or two under their belt.
Roya TV
Roya is Jordan's preeminent contemporary TV channel. They commission most of the new dramas, comedies and other shows coming out of the country. There's always something interesting to watch here. To watch only their news click here. For their comedy shows, click here. For drama shows, click here. Highly recommended as a way to get exposure to the sound of the dialect.
Jordan TV
This is the YouTube channel for Jordan's state-run TV station. You can view news broadcasts and more traditional dramas. The content is much more staid in comparison to Roya, but it exposes you to a different style of speech and local culture, so perhaps find a way to intersperse this in with your Roya comedies and dramas.
LangMedia Arabic
There are a number of different links on this page (to CultureTalk or to their page of Jordanian/Palestinian dialect resources). This is a real treasure trove of materials, much of which is provided with audio, video and full transcripts/translations.
There are also some exercises to go through to test your comprehension. Here's two Jordanians talking about the education system using dialect. Note the transcripts and translations below.
N20 Comedy
More Jordanian comedy shows. If you watch enough locally-produced TV and comedy you will notice that the same faces show up in many different programmes. Note that N20 has branched out to include other dialects, but it should be fairly easy to distinguish which is which. Lots of material here.
Accents Library (DLIFLC)
Select Arabic. You'll be presented with a number of stories read by people from different countries. Jordan is one of them. Compare and contrast with the other dialects. This is more a resource to sharpen your ear. Mother-tongue Arabic speakers grew up among this diversity and so are attuned to the tonal and phrasal differences between dialects. This is a resource that can help you improve this skill on your own.
Phone Conversations
This is a great database and resource of authentic spoken materials in the form of recorded (and transcribed) phone conversations.
Select Arabic and then Levantine. It'll (mostly) be clear when items relate to Jordan. Each conversation comes with a transcription, translation and study plan. The recordings usually last around ten minutes, so it's perfect for a quick study session. Use this to get exposure to authentic natural language.
GLOSS (DLIFLC)
GLOSS is a resource developed by the US military. You can select the dialect for which you see materials (Levantine, in this case) and it'll show you different exercises to complete. There were over 240 unique items as of January 2017.
Once you go into the individual items, it states which country the dialect is from. I really like that you can choose whether you want the questions and instructions in Arabic, though the interface itself is really horrible. Here's one of the exercises where you pair off words to two columns, depending on the meaning:
Despite the issues with the interface, there's loads of really useful material to work your way through here. This is a great resource.
Aamiya Arabic (YouTube)
This YouTube channel covers a number of dialects, but you can click through to the playlists to choose Jordan-specific materials. These videos aren't specifically designed for students, but they provide lots of authentic dialogue and dialect appropriate for intermediate students. In this video, for example, sisters Hiba and Lynn talk between themselves about what they're selling at a market stall:
THere's lots to explore in this YouTube channel, and lots of phrases and unique Jordanian expressions to file away in your personal language notebook. Wade in!
Kharabish Comedy
A mix of dialects here, but Kharabish are originally a Jordanian outfit, so lots of their older material uses that. As with earlier comedy channels, you'll recognise many of the actors and some of the skit premises.
Ex in the City
This is mostly in English, so probably too basic for intermediate students, but the series covers a number of different expressions and culturally-relevant context. The host explains a new expression each episode.
Teachers / iTalki
There are currently, as of my writing in January 2017, only three tutors from Jordan on iTalki. I've only studied with one, so I'll recommend her highly. You'll recognise her from the Jordanian dialect podcast that we recently started together. Lina Obeidat works with beginners and intermediate students alike, and makes Skype lessons fun by combining free-flow conversation with a variety of other exercises and challenges along the way. I credit Lina with the lion's share of improving my spoken Arabic, so I'd highly recommend you work with her to blast through any difficulties you may have.
Institutes / Study Abroad
I haven't studied at either of these institutes, so I can't attest to the quality of the programmes they offer etc, but I do know that many people in Amman study at these two schools. CGE is founded by Fred Tiedemann, who wrote the essential 101 Verbs I mentioned above and produced many of the videos on their indispensable YouTube channel. They (seem to) take a colloquial-first approach.
Qasid is the other main alternative, and many universities in Europe and the US send their year-abroad language students there for tuition. Both institutes come highly recommended by people who've studied there, but as always with study-abroad programmes, a lot depends on what you put into them.
[NOTE: This list of materials is adapted and drawn from the premium materials available alongside my new book, 'Master Arabic'. For the full resource guide covering other dialects as well as tried-and-tested advice from experts and others who've made it to an advanced level, get the premium edition.]
