Event Info

WHUMPTOBER is a month-long, prompt-based creation challenge (think: Inktober, but whumpier). There are 31 Official themes this year - one for each day of the month - which can be used, skipped, or combined in any way you’d like. They are meant to serve as inspiration without being taken literally (e.g. you don't have to include the exact wording into your work). Additionally, there are 3 prompts for each theme.  These are optional suggestions and can be used in conjunction with the theme, or as options/alternatives.  We want to give everyone as much creative freedom as possible, as well as increase event accessibility for folks with triggers and squicks.

Creators can PRODUCE work in any media they choose, including but not limited to: writing, visual artwork, and photo/video/audio edits. Creators can PARTICIPATE as much or as little as they want (i.e. you don’t have to do ALL the prompts if you don’t want to) and prompts can be used in any order. They are also free to use even after the event ends.

This is a MIXED MEDIA event! You can write fic, post meta, doodle or paint, create a gif set or photo edit, link a song, or get crafty with video - anything goes. As for NSFW, make what you like, we just hope that you’ll tag your work accordingly so that others participating in the event can stay safe :)

Q. Do I have to do all 31 Days? Can I post early/late?

Participate as much or little as you like, and post whenever! Just be sure to tag your posts properly (ex. #no.11, #psych101). Combining prompts into one piece of work is okay, and posting late is as well so as long as it’s in October.

Q. What if I don’t understand a theme?

Send us an ask! We’re happy to help clarify. That said, the themes are entirely up for interpretation :)

Q. Can I combine Whumptober with other creation challenges?

Absolutely! That’s like shooting two whumpees with one bullet :)

Q. Can I upload/repost my whumptober content to other social media platforms?

Of course! We’ve created an AO3 Collection to archive any fics posted there. The archive can be accessed here. The blog is the official archive, so please respect the boundaries of any closeted whumpers in your social circle :)

Q. Can I use prompts to write a new chapter for an existing fic?

Yes

Q. An existing fic I am currently writing contains many of the Whumptober prompts, can I use it?

If you are actively writing this fic at the moment with the whumptober prompts in mind, yes. If it just conveniently checks the boxes, then please don’t. You can, however, add new chapters answering one or more of the prompts.

Q. What kind of characters can I write for?

Fandom characters, OC characters, human, furry, alien, cyborg, whoever you like.

Q. Can I use a prompt multiple times?

Yes,  but it only counts once

Q. If I’m not comfortable with one day's prompts can I use a prompt of a different day as a substitute and still be a completionist?

Q. Where can I post my work?

Post where and how you want. You don’t even have to (cross)post it to Tumblr. Just keep in mind if it’s not on Tumblr we will not be able to add it to the blog archive.

Q. Can I start posting early?

You can, but this is an October event and wouldn’t it be more fun with everyone doing it at the same time? That being said, you can post early, but we won’t be reblogging any work predating October 1st.

Q. Do I have to finish a fic I started/can I post WIP’s.?

Yes you can post WIPs. And you’re not obligated to finish it in October for it to count towards being a completionist.  

Q. Is co-writing allowed?

Yes, absolutely, and it would count towards being a completionist for both/all of you :)

Q. Do I have to create 31 standalone pieces to be considered a completionist or can I write one continuous story?

One continuous story is fine.  The challenge is to write something for 31 prompts. If that’s spread over 31 fics or just one, you are still considered a completionist. (The same goes for every other media you choose.)

Q. Is there a min/max limit on word count?

There is no limit

Q. Can I combine prompts? Is there a limit on how many?

No limit and combine as many as you’d like.

Q. My interpretation of the prompt isn't whumpy at all, does that count?

No, sorry, but keep in mind that whump [see definition] is something very nuanced and different for everyone and emotional whump/angst is just as much part of it, as is physical whump and torture. So before you dismiss your idea, think about this.

Q. Can I start working on the prompts before October?

Absolutely! That’s why we posted the prompts a month in advance. We recognise how difficult it can be creating for 31 days in “real time”.

41. “Sorry isn’t going to help when I kick your ass!!”

It had, quite frankly, been a long ass day.

They had both woken up earlier than usual that morning, very much against their wills. David had classes all morning and Matteo came by to pick him up afterward, having taken the morning shift at work. David talked about his classes (“Honestly the backlighting was garbage, I can’t believe they let that scene end up in the final production,”) and Matteo told him stories about some of his more awkward or funny interactions with customers (“And this poor girl runs over to get her drink and immediately knocks it over while trying to pick it up, I felt so bad,”). They met Matteo’s mom for lunch, which was wonderful as always despite the lethargy setting in. Matteo had somehow ripped up one of his gloves the previous week (“This is just what happens on the job, David.” “Honey, you work at a cafe.”), so after lunch they went into a shop to find him new gloves. Matteo was whiny by nature, but David swore it got ten times worse when his hands were cold. He’d been enjoying being Matteo’s knight in shining armor every time he tucked one of Matteo’s hands into his pocket for warmth, but it was December and David wasn’t always with Matteo. Gloves were needed. David, on a whim, grabbed something extra as they were leaving, paying for it surreptitiously while Matteo shuffled and kicked his feet around while standing by the door. He was incredibly zoned out–David could see the tired indifference on his face after a busy morning of serving customers. David pulled the tag off Matteo’s new gloves as they walked outside and pulled them onto his hands, kissing each of his palms. When he looked up Matteo’s eyes were still tired, but they were warm and fond. They knew they needed food for the apartment so they forced themselves to go grocery shopping before going home, trying and largely failing to remember what they needed in their tired state. It had reached the part of the day when they were yearning to sit down and not think about anything for a couple minutes. And now it was only 16h–and they had made it back to the apartment, that was an accomplishment–but they were exhausted. They unpacked groceries in silence, moving in a heavy, methodical way. Matteo walked over and planted his forehead on David’s back while David put the last few things away in the cupboard. He stashed away two boxes of tea. Why did they buy tea?

Matteo’s hands were cold, his brain helpfully reminded him. Which was not actually a sound reason to buy tea, especially when they already had tea at home. No more grocery shopping when we’re tired and don’t have a list, David made a mental note.

David grabbed the last item he had kept hidden and turned around, Matteo just barely lifting his head from David’s back enough to make it possible. Matteo let his head thunk back down onto David’s chest, deflating with a giant breath. David kissed the top of his head, pulling a dark red beanie from behind his back and tugging it over Matteo’s hair. Matteo’s head lifted. His eyes stayed closed but his eyebrows slightly furrowed in confusion. David felt a small smile pull at his mouth with how puzzled and sleepy Matteo looked. He reached up a hand to pet the hat David had placed on him.

“A beanie?” he asked.

“To keep you warm.” David kissed his nose. “And so you’ll stop stealing mine.”

Matteo gave a smile that was a touch too soft to be a smirk. He let himself sink against David and rest his head on David’s shoulder.

“Can we take a nap?” came the muffled request from where Matteo’s mouth was pressed against his hoodie.

“Yeah, let’s do that,” David agreed immediately, only just realizing how his hand was stroking slowly up and down Matteo’s spine. David led Matteo to their room and got them both out of their jeans and down to their t-shirts–carefully removing the beanie and putting it on their dresser–before pulling the duvet over them snugly. Matteo was already trying to mold himself against David, despite the fact that David was still attempting to get them both settled. David huffed fondly and quickly got comfortable on his back so Matteo could drape himself over him. The sheets were cool but David knew they’d be warm soon; Matteo was like a fucking furnace when he slept. David let his head drop to the side so his nose was pressed into Matteo’s hair. He smelled like soap and like boy, like everything extraordinary that David loved and everything ordinary that held him steady. Matteo’s slow, relaxed breathing soon lulled David to sleep.

When David woke up, it was to Matteo’s warm breath puffing against his neck. Matteo was wrapped around him like an octopus and David was sweating, but he felt like a human being again. When he turned his head he could see on his bedside clock that it was only 17h 30, though it had been dark for hours. He sat up, ignoring sleepy whines coming from Matteo, and flicked on a lamp. The cool air once out from under the duvet felt like a kiss on his skin. He got up and went to turn on more lights. It was far too early to sleep for the night, but they would need light to do anything with the rest of their evening. David walked back into their room after turning on lights around the apartment to substitute for daylight.

“Baby,” David said softly. Matteo only hummed. “Matteo, you’ve gotta get up. You can’t go to bed for the night at 16h 30. You’ll mess up your sleep schedule even more than it is already.”

Matteo rolled away from David but David had already seen the signs that Matteo was starting to wake up. David leaned back down and pressed a few lingering kisses between Matteo’s shoulder blades. He traced his nose up the back of Matteo’s neck and placed another soft kiss there, inching closer so he could get to Matteo’s ear. Matteo’s eyes were still closed but David could see the grin on his face. David hummed softly into Matteo’s ear.

“What do you think about maybe getting up?” he hummed, kissing his ear gently. He heard the breath rush out of Matteo.

“I think I’d rather stay here,” he said, his voice low and scratchy. He cleared his throat.

David pressed himself close up against Matteo’s back, wrapping an arm around Matteo and skating his hand up Matteo’s chest. Matteo’s back arched a little and David smirked to himself. He let his nose trail down so he could place open-mouthed kisses along Matteo’s neck. Matteo’s breathing was steadily picking up. David’s hand drifted back down Matteo’s torso and paused at the strip of skin showing between his t-shirt and his boxers. He let his teeth scrape against Matteo’s neck on the next kiss and kept his touch feather light as his fingertips traced down Matteo’s thigh. Matteo let out a shaky exhale.

A thought popped into David’s mind. He grinned.

“That does sound nice,” he said, “but we really should get up.” He pushed himself away from Matteo, making sure to drag his hand over Matteo’s hip as he went. He kept his lips attached to Matteo’s neck, making him lean over Matteo on the bed, and when David got his feet on the ground he sucked on Matteo’s neck hard. Matteo’s mouth dropped open on a moan.

David abruptly pulled back and yanked the duvet off of Matteo and the bed entirely. Matteo’s moan rose sharply into a yelp and he jerked into a ball, seemingly involuntarily, and David cracked up laughing. Matteo shot a glare over his shoulder. David sat down on the edge of the bed and reached a hand out to lay on his shoulder.

Still chuckling, David said, “I’m sorry, baby, but it had to be done. I’m trying to help you maintain a normal sleep schedule.” Another wave of laughter overtook him.

Matteo rolled back to face David so suddenly that David almost jumped. He pointed an accusing finger at David. “Sorry isn’t going to help when I kick your ass!!” he yelled. David just lifted an eyebrow.

“Oh?” he asked, trying to school his features into a serious expression. It wasn’t working.

Matteo struggled off the bed looking, quite frankly, like an idiot. David backed away as Matteo started thrashing around and didn’t bother to hide his grin.

“You don’t think I can take you?” Matteo challenged.

“Um… no?” David felt his eyebrows move up his forehead as his mouth pulled into a smirk. Matteo jumped up and shoved David’s shoulders with his hands.

“Come on! You and me, right now! I can take you!” Matteo was dancing on his feet, moving around agitatedly while David watched him, utterly puzzled.

“Matteo, no. Come on, baby, let’s go make dinner,” David coaxed, “and afterward we can come back in here and reconsider your thoughts about staying in bed.” David started to turn toward the door but Matteo used both his hands to push at David’s shoulder, still moving around like he was hyped for a fight.

“No!! We do this now! Thunderdome!! You’re going down!”

David couldn’t stop himself from doubling over laughing. “Are you serious?” He tried to restrain his laughter, “Mad Max?”

Matteo was grinning now, but it didn’t stop him from letting out a war cry of “TWO MEN ENTER, ONE MAN LEAVES!”

David was hit with laughter all over again and felt tears forming in his eyes. He tried to straighten up and control himself, feeling his stomach start to ache with laughter. “Okay, okay,” he wheezed, “Dinner time, baby.” He turned to walk to the door and heard Matteo yell, “No!” behind him.

Several things happened very quickly. David felt Matteo’s arms crush around him, as if to… tackle him? Bear-hug him? David figured Matteo hadn’t thought it through. David instinctively dropped down so he was a little hunched, twisting his body hard. Matteo, who had slammed into his back upon throwing his arms around David, was flung toward the door by the combined force of David’s movement and his momentum. David caught one of Matteo’s shoulders so he spun and his back hit the door, David following closely so his body pinned Matteo’s there. David heard Matteo’s shaky inhale next to his ear.

“Alright,” David said, right into Matteo’s ear. Calmly, smoothly. “Are you done?” David pulled back, keeping his face close to Matteo’s. Matteo’s head was tipped back, resting on the door, mouth parted and eyes fluttering open. David felt his mouth curl into a lazy smile when he saw Matteo’s dark gaze. Matteo’s hands flexed and clenched against the door where David had them pinned and his back strained to arch so he could press up against David. David shoved his body weight forward, forcing Matteo’s back against the wall. Matteo whined quietly and David lifted an eyebrow, waiting for a response.

Matteo nodded while continuing to strain toward David, his eyes asking for a kiss.

“Great,” David said brightly, stepping back abruptly and watching Matteo scramble to stay upright against the door. “So, dinner?” David bit his lip to keep himself from laughing again. Matteo’s mouth dropped open, affronted but also quickly pulling up toward disbelieving laughter.

Matteo launched himself toward David, whose arms were already open to catch him and Matteo peppered his face in kisses. “Okay,” Matteo said, smiling and kissing him soundly on the mouth, “You win.” One, two, three more kisses. “But so do I.”

So I’ve been working on this for like three weeks! It’s been a tonne of fun but also a tonne of work. Coming up with five distinct subraces meant a lot of drawing! Oh boy! This started as a re write of the Dryad race because I didn’t think the Dryad race i found online was super playable, but it kinda gotta away from me a bit so I left dryads behind and these are fully homebrewed! The main carry overs from dryads are the +2 wisdom that they all get, and the no metal caveat in the weaponry proficiencies.

I spent some time researching different culture’s mythology on dryads and similar creatures. Wikipedia has a handy list of similar folklores at the end of the dryad entry (im not linking cos tumblr screws w posts w external links, but you can check it out yourself if youre curious). Basically I picked a few and wrote down some notes on each one so each subclass had a distinct feeling to it.

The Deep Forest subclass is based off hamadryads. Super long life, connected to a specific tree (i removed the life or death thing and just made it birthed by a tree, cos having a tree that if cut would killed you seemed unbalanced to me), that sorta thing. Cos they’re based on Oak trees, and Oaks are fairly hardy, I gave them some good survival type stuff. I didn’t want long, unfamiliar names so I changed it from Hamadryad to Deep Forest. Also I really didn’t want them to hark back to dryads and just Hamad had a weird ring to it to me

Gillie Du got to pretty much keep it’s name tho. Originally it’s Ghillie Dhu, and there was nothing wrong w that but i wanted things a bit simple in the name department. Ghillie Dhu is a Scottish fairy who (to drastically summarise him) lives in a marsh and plays tricks on people. As I said earlier, I wasn’t using these sources as gospel, just as flavour affects, so the Gillie Du subrace became a more water based thing with the breathing under water and swim speed.

Desert Walkers probably changed most from their original material. I started with the Salabhanjika, a sculpture found in india that’s always got a tree and a musical instrument in it. I wanted a bit of size range (i had to talk myself out of making one of them Large size cos it got too op, but I wanted to so bad) so they got the Small tag, then because India is a hot country and I already had a sub class more tightly woven in with fruit trees I made it more desert based, giving some good boosts to travelling related skills. I really love playing Small races and I wanna play as one of these now, it feels built for a ranger but I think it could make a kickass wizard tbh

The Maliade are based on the Epimelides, who were a kind of nymph associated with apple trees and sheep. I extended that association to fruit trees and all farm animals cos i didn’t want to cramp anyones roleplaying incase someone really wanted to be a Maliade who’s buddies with a bull and makes three magic dragon fruits every day. There’s no information beyond that on wikipeida, but I didn’t have any subrace who had a close relationship with people, so they got that. I like this one, I think the skills are pretty useful in a lot of small ways

And the Kodama! The Kodama are the only ones who actually got to keep their original name. Kodama are a Japanese spirit that inhabit trees. They can also be seen as Mountain Gods. So these guys got the mountain skills. Spider climb is a great skill, but when coupled with a slower speed I thought they cancel out pretty comfortably to make a balanced race. The Kodama has a brief description on wikipedia, but it’s terrifying, “small, white humanoids with large, rattling heads and mask-like features, with asymmetrical black dots for eyes and mouth, and move similar to bobbleheads.” I took the essence of this (pale skin, dark eyes) and dropped the rest. A lot of people (myself included) like their characters to be sexy, and that ain’t hot to me

I’ve got a race in the works now that is like a living statue. Super slow but super durable. It’s a bit min/max but could be fun for some campaigns

Nature Spirits

Nature Spirits are a known phenomenon, a wandering essence of the land who appear commonly in the land. Some Nature Spirits are chosen and come into being through a birth touched by the land, some choose the path themselves and give their souls over to the land, some are simply brought into being by the powers of the land. It is a difficult life as a Nature Spirit, your priority is not yourself rather the protection and love of your home land. You have features and traits specific to the type of land you hail from.

Each Nature Spirit is different, some wander far from their home, travelling and researching the world at large to better safeguard the continued life of their land. Others never leave and are rarely if ever seen by a civilised person. Some live in harmony with the people of their land, others seek to drive out humanoid peoples. You path in life is up to you, but the land you are from is your home and your priority.

Nature Spirit Traits

Ability Score Increase: Your Wisdom score increases by two.

Languages: You speak Common and Sylvan

Weapon Proficiency: You are proficient with the quaterstaff, club, greatclub, and slings. You cannot use this proficiency to use metal weapons and must use naturally found projectiles (such as wood, stone, nuts) for your sling. If your Class gives you proficiency in any of these weapons the metal caveat no longer applies

Alignment: Nature Spirits can have any alignment, but their loyalty lies with the land that powers them

Deep Forest

These spirits emerge from an ancient tree once in the trees lifetime, sometimes living incorporeally their whole lives, other times taking humanoid form to explore their forest in that way. They are ancient, tough, and fast, living the longest of any of their brethren Nature Spirits. Their hair forms as moss does atop their head. They are the least likely to leave their home unless they must.

Age: You age slowly, up to about 1000 years, and you age in time as a human would, at 80 years old you appear 8, at 900 years old you appear as a 90 year old human

Size: Medium

Speed: Your speed is 35ft

Ability Score Increase: Your Strength score increases by one.

The Hard Trek: Rough and difficult terrain does not affect you

Vision: You have Darkvision to a distance of 60ft

Survivalist: You are proficient in the Survival skill

Gillie Du

The Gillie Du find home wherever land meets water, be it ocean, river bank, or a swampy marsh. They are generally cheerful and occasionally make themselves known as a trickster to strangers in their land. Their skin is a dusky green tone but otherwise they appear somewhat elven. They can be born of humanoids, but more often are formed over some time in their land, and very occasionally a humanoid will show such a loyalty to the land that they turn into a Gillie Du. They are comfortable in both water and on land, but prefer land.

Age: You are fully grown at about 40 years old and do not age until your death at about 700 years of age.

Size: Medium

Speed: Your speed is 30ft, and your swim speed is 30ft

Ability Score Increase: Your Dexterity score increases by one.

Powerful Lungs: You can hold your breath for fifteen minutes plus a number of minutes equal to your Constitution modifier (minimum of zero)

Vision: You have Darkvision to a distance of 60ft

Sleep with Ease: You can cast the Alarm spell once a day without components

Desert Walker

Desert Walkers are born in deserts and find themselves comfortable in a hot climates. They are the most inhuman in appearance, still humanoid but with grey black skin, ears that connect behind their heads, and everlastingly young. Their age, of course, is not reflected in their appearance and they often speak with an experience that startles people. They are soft spoken and have learned from the many cultures they have encountered in their time.

Age: You live up to roughly 200 years, always appearing someone younger than an adult

Size: Small

Speed: You move quickly despite your size. Your speed is 30

Ability Score Increase: Your nomadic lifestyle has caused you to meet with the odd civilisation and learn from many varied cultures. Your Intelligence score increases by one

Inexhaustable: You have advantage against effects that will cause Exhaustion

Fire: You can cast the Cantrip Produce Flame

Musically Gifted: You have proficiency in one musical instrument of your choice

Keep an Eye Out: You have Expertise in the Perception skill

Endurance: You do not need to eat

Maliade

The Maliade Spirits are the most civilised, often the child of a townsperson who is touched by the powers of nature. They grow up with a community of humanoids in a small town hidden in the forest, or a larger city connected to an expanse of untouched flora. They are Medium size even if their birth parents are Small or Large, their size is determined by their Nature Spirit soul. They are friendly with animals and people alike, used to the constraints of town life as well as the freedom beyond. They are the most normal in appearance, the least likely of their kin to turn heads

Age: You age at the same rate as the average human, and die at roughly 100 years of age

Size: Medium

Speed: Your speed is 30ft

Ability Score Increase: Your Charisma score increases by one.

Language: You can speak to all farm animals

A Good Fruit: Everyday you can create four fruits of your choice, each feeds the average person for a day and restores 2 Hit Points. You cannot use this abiliy again until your next long rest

Find a Ride: At 3rd level you can cast Find Steed once a day, you are restricted to animals that would be normally found in a farm such as a horse, sheep, or cow.

Cook: You are proficient in Cooks Tools

Kodama

The Kodama are usually the result of a lost traveller or explorer who commits their life to protecting the land they’ve found and accepts the physical changes that entails. They are drawn to the roads and paths through their mountain range, watching and learning the different plants, animals, and humanoids that grow and pass through. They are pale skinned with dark irises and are generally more lean than strong.

Age: You live up to 400 years, aging to appear as a human would in their 60s

Size: Medium

Speed: You’re used to moving carefully across treacherous mounains, as such your speed is 25ft

Ability Score Increase: The mountains are a hard life. Your Constitution score increases by one

Natural Defence: You are more likely to defend yourself than attacked, as such once a day you can cast Barkskin

A Life of Climbing: You are forced to carefully climb your way throug life, leaving you with an ability most professional climbers would marvel at. You can Spiderclimb, climbing across walls and roofs live gravity doesn’t affect you

Sight: You have 30ft of Darkvision

Sebastian Stan Writing Challenge

I’m still taking a break from the quickies so I decided that April should be Sebastian Stan months cause why not? This challenge center around Seb and a handful of his characters. I listed the one you can write below. All the prompts are something either Seb or one of his characters have said at some point.

Due Date: April 30th (don’t worry about timezone. As long as it’s the 30th somewhere it counts.)

Word min: 500 words

Word Max: 5k words

Style: It can be a drabble, one shot or beginning of a series. Do not put in in the middle of an ongoing series since I plan on reading them and don’t want to read 10 parts of something to understand the entry. If you create a series only part one has to be posted before the due date.

Pairing and word count also have to be easy to spot in your header!

You pick a quote (all are something either Tom or one of his characters said) and a pairing off the list. Send me the prompt number along with a backup just in case and your pairing of choice. ASKS ONLY!! REPLIES, REBLOGS AND IMS WILL BE IGNORED!
