The Freedom of Expression Ep 6 - 'Antrum', the most cursed movie in history.
K: Hi this is Dir en grey's Kaoru, and The Freedom of Expression..Joe san, Tasai san..
J: Yep
K: I think the viewers already realise this, but we're shooting four epidodes at once. (note:* the covid episodes were aired at short notice after ep 3*).
J: Yes, four.
T: Our clothes havn't changed.
K: Is our positioning ok like this? Wouldn't it be better with you in the middle, Kaoru?
K: Well, next time we could change seats if we want? But, I havn't seen you two in a long time, I thought it would be better to look at you from over here.
J: Ah, yes. If you are in the middle you have to keep looking from side to side..
K: Yeah, so..we could change seats next time...We might even change our filming location?
J: For sure
K: I don't know though...we can carry on without making too many set plans.
J: I see.
K: He's not coming out today, is he?
J: He's not. Let's leave him alone.
K: Well, shall we get started?... Oh, actually, when we finished recording the last epidode, my boss came here, and said 'that was a lie, thats wrong'.
J: Oh, what was it again? He took offense to something written in a magazine.
T:...and stormed over there.
K: He didn't actually angrily storm over there, he apparently went there, not to tell them to write nice stuff, but to get them to write what his band was really like, and he was fine with it then *1
J: Ahh, to stand out?
K: He was quite agitated. *T laughs*
J: No, but its a bit worrying isn't it? From the listeners point of view, you hear that type of story and interpret it as something amusing, the story gets communicated on in that way.
K: Well, theres no fire without smoke..
J: You mean, theres no smoke without fire.
K: Yeh.. Its because he's just a bit scary *the others laugh*, thats why that type of gossip appears.
J: Of course
K: Right?
T: I see
J: Well, we don't know what he was really like back then...
K: I don't either.
J: But he surely wasn't one of those cuddly, happy people?
K: People in bands were just kinda scary back then, right?
J: They were scary, yeah. But they were also really cool, weren't they?
K: *nods*
J: ..in reality....I think they were.
K: We're (Dir en grey) not scary though, are we?
J, T: Uhh... *K laughs*
J: You are not scary, but...
K: We're not THAT scary right? *laughing*
J: You have an incredible aura..
K: Well, lets leave it..
J: Fow now, lets just say your boss wasn't trying to make excuses..
K: Excuses? *laughs*
J: ..he was just trying to tell us that the stuff we said was not true. Right, well lets introduce today's topic.
' "You watch it, you die", Antrum - The most cursed movie in history.'
'Unbelievablely, its to be released in Japan, this incredible movie is to be screened. Filmed in California, America in 1970, the movie 'Antrum'. Rumored to be excessively scary, and to bring about misfortune to those who watch it, it was said that this movie should not be released, but buried and restricted. However, in 1988, it was screened for the first time in Budapest, Hungary, and during its screening, a fire broke out in the theatre and it burnt to the ground. 56 people died in this incident. Since then, whenever this movie is screened, the people involved have suffered mysterious deaths, one after the other. It became a work of art that no-one wanted to touch. Then, we arrive at the present day. After a long search, documentary movie makers Michael Licini and David Amito discovered the 35mm film reel of 'Antrum'. They have decided to screen it with the warning that viewers must take personal responsibility for anything that happens. The movie will be screened this year in venues across the country from Friday.'
K: Ahh, is it okay?...if this kind of incident occurs?
J: It says, if you watch it you die!
T: Its spooky.
K: Whether it lives up to expectations or not, theres trouble either way.
J,T: Thats right.
J: If people die, they're in trouble, and if people don't die, and they get sued for misrepresentation, they'll be like 'What? Arn't you glad you didn't die?!'
T: I wonder what will happen.
J: They say everyone has to take personal responsibility.
K: Well, I'm slightly interested.
J: Would you go and watch it?
K: Hmm, I want to see it, yeh.
J: You're attracted to it?
K: Um, Horror is...
Kami: Nononono! You must not go to see this, you must not go to see this!
J: Ahh, Kami says you musn't, he's worried suddenly....Its not okay, Kami?
Kami: No no, its not. I was quiet so far because I didn't want to have anything to do with this topic.
J: Oh, with this topic?
Kami: Yeh, its really scary.
J: Is this type of thing not good?
Kami: Its not good. I have to work nights..
J: Ah, night shifts? *the others laugh*
Kami: and I work alone.
J: Yeh.
K: Well, yeh, thats scary.
Kami: They say you'll die, I don't wanna die on my night shift.
J: Yeh, but gods can't die can they?
T: Right.
Kami: Well, outwardly.
J: What does that mean? Outwardly?? *laughing*
Kami: We don't die completely..
J: Oh, but from the human perspective you appear to die?
Kami: Yeah, I appear to die, but then am reborn.  *J, T laugh*
K: He doesn't need to be scared.
T: Pretty interesting.
Kami: No no, the bit where I appear to be dead..its kinda troublsome.
J: Its trouble? You're a bit nervous about that?
Kami: Yeh, im nervous. Its not good.
J: Its not good?
Kami: Yeah, going to see this movie is not good.
J: But, there is a certain attraction by people to these kind of supernatural, occult things isn't there?
K, T: Yeah, yeah.
J: You know, things that science can't prove.
Kami: Yeah, I know about all of it though.
J: You do?
Kami: Yes, I do. Because, god created everything on earth.
T: Well, yeah.
J: I see.
T: So, he shouldn't really be scared of this, should he?
K: Really, that makes this situation here part of the occult too, doesn't it?
J: This is the occult. *T laughs* Us talking to a god..*K laughing*  Talking to a god about movies even!
Kami: Well, there are many types of god aren't there?
J: Ahh, there are many types, yeh.
Kami: Yeh yeh, there are all knowing-all powerful gods...and gods like this one here. *the others laugh*
J: This god isn't very 'all knowing-all powerful'?
Kami: No, im probably in the lower orders.
J: *laughing* Yeh, we know that!
T: He sounds like a salaryman.
J: A hierarchy of gods..
Kami: Well, the middle-lower orders.
J: The middle-lower oders? *laughing*
T: Thats quite low, right? *J laughing*
J: It might just not be limited to recent times, but isn't there quite an occult boom going on now? How do you see it Kaoru?
Kami: An occult boom?
J: An occult boom.
Kami: Well, maybe its because a lot of things have already been solved. As science progresses, we know more...like the Higgs particle, you know it?
J: I've heard the name, but I don't know the details.
Kami: Its kinda like how the source of gravity was discovered. They spin it round really fast and crash it, right?
J: What a simple explanation!
Kami: Its in Switzerland!
T: In Switzerland...
J: They have the equipment to spin it and crash it powerfully, right?
Kami: Yes, yes. Atoms, they crash atoms into one another..and when they crash, the atoms break apart, and various particles have been discovered....and they saw a black hole forming and such. These kinds of mysterious things are really happening. *2.
T: Ehh, Kami, thats impressive.
Kami: So it could be just because of these solved mysteries, peoples' imaginations are swelling and giving them wild ideas?
J: I see.
K: Well, there must be people who like this stuff.
Kami: Wasn't my explanation easy to understand?
J: Yes, it was very well explained.
Kami: Spinning it around and bashing really hard, and then a kind of mysterious feeling...
*everyone laughs*
J: Thst is super easy to understand. Explained in simple terms.
T: Exactly
J: Only by a god..*3
T: Hey Joe, is that okay? *laughs*
J: Kami's awful aspects have transfered to me. *T laughs* The hopless parts. Those parts are showing in me.
Kami: Don't say hopeless!
K *laughs*
J: Oh did you hear that bit?
Kami: I heard it.
J: Of course, Kami hears everything (direct translation: hell ears)
K: This is awful!
Kami: Not hell, heaven.
T: Isn't this fourth time getting tiring?
*laughing*
J: Of course not
T: Actually, ive been to an event before where a spirit appeared.
J: Ehh?
T: When I say spirit, I mean Lincoln. There was a movie about the American president, Lincoln. So I went as a reporter to a weird movie event about it. And there was a medium there who could channel Lincoln so we could ask anything.
J: Wow...so, Lincoln spoke to you in person?
T: The medium started going 'Mmmghh mmmghh' and then 'Ready', so we all thought Lincoln had come to us, and we were told to ask anything, so someone asked 'Mr Lincoln, Mr Lincoln, what did you think of the movie? ..and after about three seconds the medium suddenly dropped down and said, 'Lincoln has left us'.
J: Ehh?! He didn't say anything?!
T: No, Lincoln didn't say anything.
J: Just 'Mmgh, mmgh'?
T: Yeah, and then he fell straight down..and was finished in three seconds. The whole venue had been waiting so eagarly...
J: What kind of article did Tokyo Sports write?
T: About how the venue was....*4
*laughing*
K: That fits well with this show!
J: This kind of chaos. So you were there, Tasai san?
T: Yes, I was reporting on it.
J: Oh really?
T: Yeh, that type of thing happened.
J: I wonder how the medium was after that, after Lincoln left.
T: She's getting paid for nothing.
K: Well, maybe some more accidents happened...
J: Oh yeah, she felt the danger. She didn't research enough before calling him.
T: She should have studied.
J: Maybe she didn't expect that many reporters?
K: Oh, maybe, she thought 'oh no..'
J: Maybe she was shocked to see so many people when she turned up. But the movie company paid her to promote the movie like this right?
T: Yes
J: Ahh, but people will probably go to see this movie right, Kami?
Kami: As for Lincoln coming down, he probably didn't say anything because he planned to speak in English.
J, T: Oh yeah.
K: Maybe
Kami: They forgot how to speak English?
J: I see..he hasn't been called in a long time, so even he forgot how to speak English?
Kami: No no, the medium.
J: Ah, the medium? Ah, I see.
Kami: Even I forget what to say sometimes, as soon as I think about it, and when im listening, you're like 'oh he's gone'
J: Isn't that dementia? Kami, can you speak to dead people like a medium can, can gods do it?
Kami: Gods? There are gods who can do that.
K: But you can't.
J: But you can't?
Kami: No, I can't do anything *J laughs*
J: We can only pray to you?
Kami: Yes, only pray.
J: I reckon I could be a god then too.
K: Yeh, yeh.
J: Its pretty interesting, no matter what your capacity, you could be a god, right? *laughing*
Kami: No, being a god is not about your capacity...
J: Oh, its not, im wrong?
Kami: Are you making fun of me?
J: No, im not! Im just too naive.
Kami: Being a god is something you're born with.
T: Ahh, its deep.
Kami: Being a god is something you are born with.
K: He just said that.
J: Im kinda imagining him with a smug face right now. *K laughs*
J: I havn't met him so I don't know though.
Kami: Even though I can't do anything, Im different from you guys.
J: Ah, you are born different?
Kami: Yes, yes, yes.
J: You exist differently from regular humans?
Kami: Yes, yes, yes.
J: I see.
K: We're right back to the occult now, aren't we?
J: Yeh, this is almost like a Tokyo Sports kind of issue.
Kami: No, you mustn't doubt the existence of god!
J: Oh, you musn't?
Kami: You mustn't! If you do, and you watch this movie, you will die.
J: We'll die?
T: Scary!
K: I wonder if we'll really die?
Kami: So believe in god!
K: Oh, if you believe in god, you won't die if you watch this movie?
Kami: Yeh, you can increase your shrine donation or something..
J: It ends up with money again *K laughs* He always ends up talking about money.
T: Whats up with him? *K laughing*
J: He doesn't have anything nice to say. Its always down to money in the end. With Ghosn he was the same.
T: He was, yeh *laughing*
Kami: Thats right
J: This has nothing to do with the movie 'Antrum'...
K: So there is a subscribe option on youtube right?
J: Yes, if you subscribe for us...
K: I think I should say 'please subscribe', I havn't said it yet * T laughs*
J: Please subscribe, everyone.
T: Please.
K: If we get more subscribers, we can do more things.
J: Right
Kami: Yes, please subscribe.
J: Subscribers will probably...
*sound cuts out*
On screen message :The sound cut out for some reason. We'll let you know what they said. For now, this episode has ended .
*1 - Not 100% sure I understood this story right.
*2 Translating quantum physics isn't my strong point.
*3 Im fairly sure i've missed some nuance here.
*4 Couldn't catch this.

Ok gonna try live blogging again
So ive just started listening to the magnet archives and I thought id like to write down my thoughts on it and thought maybe some people would enjoy seeing those thoughts. I've just finished episode 8, and so far I'm not horribly scared (wich is good, I don't like being legitimately creeped out, I just like horror cause its extra captivating and can explore really weird ideas.) I've also been checking the content warnings for each episode before listening cause I do that when possible with horror stuff, so I do have a general idea of the themes of each ep beforehand.
So the episodes so far-
Episode 1- this one was fun! Nice spooky monster, I wasn't able to predict the plot wich was actually quite unexpected. Not sure why the monster wants a cigarette lol. Also Jonathan mentions a martian who he seems to think is useless, Martian is an important character from what I've seen right? I will have to tey to remember all these names he's he's mentioning.
Ep 2- excellent excellent writing! I still keep finding myself thinking about this one nearly a week after listening to it. The whole concept is so interesting and written so well. Did he do the right thing? Was the thing in the coffin really dangerous? What benefit did they get from harvesting it or whatever? Why did it need to be kept so long? And why by a common person? Aajdkdj I really hope this story is important later.
3- I really like this one. I like how she describes her habit of watching people as I find myself doing things similar if I end up seeing the same people every day. I also liked graham and how oddly he behaves, I don't know I just love when people or characters are odd or difficult to figure out. This whole episode really took advantage of my love for people watching lol.
4- this one spooked me a bit. There's a reacurring pattern of.. Well patterns being important and drawing people in. I wonder if this is related to one of the organizations or whatever they are? I know there are a bunch of different named things that contribute to alot of the creepy things? There's one I think called the sight? There's an eye here maybe it that? I can't remember if there's one related to patterns- anyway as someone who often forgets where I'm going and ends up random places this spooked me a but more than the others.
5- a very cool concept. I have no idea what's happening. This is good. I love how diverse the statement givers are. Is there a better way to say statement givers? I don't want to call them narrators cause Jonathan is the narrator... Anyway, very cool, I'll try to keep themes of cloning and cold metal hearts in mind.
6- I love how real the stories feel, the writing is excellent and the narrator is an excellent voice actor! It feels like how people would really react to stuff like this and how they would try to explain it, how alot of them still aren't sure, it sounds like a story someone says really happened and you don't believe it but also you can't come up with any other way it could have happened short of calling them a liar. I like that they aren't keeping away from awkward stuff as well, that's how life is, it just makes it feel more real. This one didn't spook me so much but it was still quite interesting and vivid. Still no idea what happened. This is good.
7-very haunting, I really love the image of the soldier fighting but their shadow is the piper. I don't think horror works quite as well in a war setting, there's already too much horror there, adding something else supernatural doesn't really add to it much. Don't get me wrong, still a very good story, im pro not-getting-scared anyway lol.
8- ngl this one hit a bit deeper as I too have had that panic of "what if im getting schizophrenia" as it runs in my family as well so I maybe identified a bit much with the main character. The cw sheet only mentioned suicide wich im also glad I was prepared for, but maybe I should see if they can add schizophrenia as well. It didn't bother me too much just would have liked to be prepared for it, you know? Anyway, I hope his dads schizophrenia is not going to come back as a plot point I don't like it when stories portray schizophrenics as the ones who /really/ know what's going on while everyone else discounts them. I feel like it just makes paranoia easier to believe. But I also get that its a fun plot thing too do, and writers simply can't be aware of every way anything they do could effect people so I get it. Anyway, I liked the bleeding tree and the spooky apple, still a very well done story.
Alright! Now on to episode 9!!

Hi :) ive been binging lots of shows lately and wanna talk about them. join me?
lots of paragraphs below the cut with spoilers, but if you watch any of these shows, speak to me, friend!!
-i finally watched the season finale of Supernatural. i kinda skimmed thru several ep’s to get there, im not sure if i even saw the full season. pleasantly surprised by the ending would be a massive understatement. that was easily the best finale since the angels falling at the end of s8. idk what the deal was with that thing staring down at jack, maybe i missed something earlier in the season that would explain it, idk, but i continue to really like jack’s character, he’s sorta been the only interesting part of the show for like 2 or 3 seasons now, whenever it was he was introduced. loved tfw all back to back to back as the monsters they spent all the previous seasons vanquishing surrounded them. absolute perfect music to accompany the scene. the eerie atmosphere in the graveyard and the obvious allusions to past moments of the show? *chef kiss*. i will actually watch the final season after that ending. i have my opinions about dean that i will keep to myself. cas i barely recognize anymore. sam i wish would stand up to dean more but i mean it’s season 14 or whatever so thats obvs not gonna change.
-riverdale. im not all the way caught up on it yet, but i decided to give the show a shot so i could see luke perry, a childhood crush of mine, and was not at all expecting to see skeet ulrich also, a 2nd crush lol. the show instantly hooks you with the mystery. i’m on i believe season 3 now and i can honestly say that ive really fallen in love with many of the characters. lots of stuff makes me roll my eyes, the show is super melodramatic, and there’s way too many teens having sex (god im old, who even says that? old ppl, thats who) but every ep i keep in mind this show is meant for a younger audience, it’s not for me. the singing is cringey every time tho, sorry yikes. and there’s references to 80′s and 90′s pop culture in just about every scene of the show that i can imagine is going right over the younger viewers heads.
-schitt’s creek. omg. if you havent watched it and are trying to think of a show to watch next, please i beg of you, watch this one. it is flawless. absolutely hysterical, i love every character and every ep. i loved it so much that im gonna watch it again. please watch it.
-im gonna combine Oz and The Wire bc the shows are both old af at this point but i finally got amazon prime and was able to watch these two shows that i remember seeing the commercials for when i was barely a teenager and wanting to watch them then. both were great. Oz is def a little dated, but The Wire could air today and prob hold up even better now with all the f’d up corruption going on in the world. The casts for both shows were an endless lineup of huge actors who were just getting started too.
-good omens. ummmm :-/ i did love the 2 mains ofc, but the show itself? maybe it just wasnt my type? not made for me? idk, it was very overhyped on here. not something id watch again.
-outlander. what.the.fuck. couldnt make it past halfway thru season 2, and it’s rare for me to just stop watching a show. the whole thing is just about torture. the whole show. sexual assault and torture. every ep. no thanks.
-breaking bad. i know right? like who hasnt seen this show. me, i hadnt, oops. it was good but another that i felt was overhyped. haaaated walt. hated him. there were no redeeming qualities or moments for him, everything had this shadow of betrayal and ulterior motives beneath the surface. the brother in law grew on me and so did jesse but overall, very unlikable main characters.
i cant think of any other shows, it feels like ive watched tons lately. i think my next undertaking will be lucifer but im not committed to the idea of it yet. any suggestions for shows? they have to be on netflix, prime or hulu though, or regular basic cable.
also i have several followers on this tumblr that i believe are following me for criminal minds content. just a heads up that all cm stuff is over on my other page allhallowsreid
my god, i played sick to get outta work today and im just like.. i would STILL be there right now, jfc. the american work day is fuckin barbaric.

Another top 20 Albums of 2016
So I didn’t post any of my old lists up here but...
...’Another late list of last years albums for yer! I’m going strictly with albums this year...
“Have I left anything out?”- Albums et al of 2015:
Nicholas Payton- Letters: Nicholas Payton follows up ‘Numbers’ with ‘Letters’; music written and played for each letter in the alphabet. While this didn’t blow me away, there were some nice pieces on here. I really like ‘B’, ‘I’ and ‘X for Patrice Rushen’
Native Dancer- EP Vol. 1: This is a name I see on the live circuit a fair bit. I initially neglected going to their shows (surprise, surprise), but they appeared at the Jazz Re:Fest last July and delivered some truly impressive music; I was kicking myself for about a minute for not listening to their stuff earlier...
...Errr...I can’t think of any more...please feel free to make suggestions here...
...2016:
20) Ab-Soul- Do What Thou Wilt.:
Tumblr media
I did like this slightly more than ‘These Days...’. I find this album as Ab-Soul sharing various thoughts and ideas without fully committing to them, although there is a fair bit of questioning gender roles on here. My favourites include ‘Huey Knew THEN’, ‘INvocation’, ‘Beat the Case’ and the vulnerable ‘Evil Genius’.
Random Note: If Black Hippy were the TMNT, I reckon Soul would be Mikey...
19) Josef Leimberg- Astral Progressions:
Tumblr media
I got on to this one pretty late; I came across this on Bandcamp’s top 100 list. Some nice melodies and some strong playing on here. Unfortunately the song that caused me to buy this album (‘Interstellar Universe’) is by far the best musically for me. ‘As I Think of You’ and ‘Between Us 2′ are pretty good runners up...
18) Derrick Hodge- The Second:
Tumblr media
Derrick Hodge gives us another solo album with ‘The Second’. This album has elements of Hip-Hop, Blues, a bit of Folk, Jazz (obviously), Soul and a strong element of the modal sound present in a lot of electronic influenced music (I’m referring to artists like ‘Floating Points’, ‘Kelsey Lu’, ‘Little Dragon’, and so on...). The last quarter of this project is the strongest part for me. Shouts to Freda for bringing this to my attention...
17) Danny Brown- Atrocity Exhibition:
Tumblr media
‘Some interesting experimental Hip-Hop to be found on this project. The subject matter comes across samey at first, but a few listens and some research into Danny Brown has me concluding that this album is be a reflection of his drug fuelled days...I could be wrong...
16) Terrace Martin- Velvet Portraits:
Tumblr media
I felt that the really stand out tracks are blocked out by a fair bit of filler. However, the strong pieces are those that I’ve gone back to quite often over the year. ‘Favourites are ‘A Tribe Called West’ and ‘Think of You’...
15) ScHoolboy Q- Blank Face LP:
Tumblr media
I initially ignored this album (shock horror -_-), but my friend Dan had tweeted about how good this album was. It encouraged me to check it out: I wasn’t disappointed. ‘Definitely the strongest offering from TDE last year. ‘Kno’ ya Wrong’ and ‘Ride Out’ (one of Sounwaves hardest beats in a while) are standouts.
Random Note: If Black Hippy were the TMNT, I reckon Quincy would be Raph.
Another Random Note: This thought trail is based on my tendency to associate Hip-Hop artists (usually groups) with colours, and loosely based on the model sheet ‘The Line Animation’ did for their vine of the TMNT. If on the off chance’ you’re curious...:
http://thelineanimation.tumblr.com/post/153342691923/turtle-assemble-progression-reel-and-model-sheets
...But I digress...
14) Incognito- In Search of Better Days:
Tumblr media
Although by now I feel pretty clued up on what to expect from this band sonically, I ended up really enjoying this project more than recent offerings; their best since ‘Tales From The Beach’, although feature spots from bassist Stuart Zender, drummer Richard Spaven, and vocalist Vula Malinga, help in revitalising their sound...
13) Collective Peace- Introducing Collective Peace:
Tumblr media
While I didn’t find much new in the Neo soul sound Collective Peace bring, I did find myself coming back to this album quite a lot. This album makes it this far up the list on the strength of ‘Sun Chaser’. ‘Let the Music Play’ and ‘Track IV’ do really well on a clear day also...
12) Aisling Iris- Night Time Moves:
Tumblr media
‘Another recommendation from Miss Laidlaw; She shared this album on twitter. I clicked the link and: I always forget how much I like Drew Horley’s production until I hear it again. Some strong melodies and Aisling Iris touches on love, loneliness, lust, being true to your dreams and the current political climate over these 13 tracks...
11) David Bowie- ★:
Tumblr media
Over the past year and a half, I’ve done slightly better at taking recommendations from friends (even though I discover most things through someone else o_O). During the wake of Bowie’s passing, this album had received a lot of kudos and so on it went. I found myself sucked into the melodies and some of the soundscapes, particularly ‘Girl Loves Me’ and the title track. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised as Bowie was always quite forward thinking in his approach to musical trends...
10) Nicholas Payton- Textures:
Tumblr media
It’s no secret that I find Nicholas Payton- The Blogger quite cantankerous and unnecessarily miserable when speaking on music (there were quite a few points I agreed with in that ‘Black Messiah’ blog, but the delivery... *sigh*). The Musician however, has some pretty good ideas. This album was composed based on the textures an artist painted. Musically I can hear Odd Future (‘Hard’) or Terence Brown (‘Fuzzy’/‘Sticky’) creating something like this...
9) Solange- A Seat at the Table:
Tumblr media
‘Don’t Touch My Hair’ was doing the rounds and so, having enjoyed ‘Solo Star’ (yep. That long ago...), I gave this a listen. I adore the subject matter along with the honesty to keep in mind “Not everyday ‘woke’, somedays take it easy”. I found a lot to enjoy on this project...
8) Claffy- Claffy:
Tumblr media
Alexander Claffy presents us the stages of going through a break up; from travelling alone once more, to removing his things from his exe’s flat, to acceptance...only to lament once more with my favourite break-up track this year, ‘Epilogue’...
7) Robert Glasper Experiment- ArtScience:
Tumblr media
While this band has been quite consistent with their output this year, I enjoyed this album the most. ‘My favourite works from the Experiment since ‘Festival’, and so great to see the whole group (particularly Casey) even more involved in writing the music. ‘No One Like You’ is my go to track on here.
Random Note: ‘You’ is used a lot in the track listing...Is ‘You’ the new ‘Love’?...
6) A Tribe Called Quest- “We Got It From Here...Thank You 4 Your Service”:
Tumblr media
I pretty much agree with ‘The Guardian’s’ review of this album: “...loses focus in the last third, but the first two takes no prisoners lyrically or musically!..”. Nairobi comes correct with his bars on ‘The Space Program’. ‘Solid Wall of Sound’ and ‘Dis Generation...’ has the tightest super rapping I’ve heard since ‘Move yer Self’ by the Procussions. ‘Kids...’ is my favourite on here with tight solo verse followed by tight cyphering.
Side Note: The liner notes are definitely worth a read...
5) Corinne Bailey Rae- The Heart Speaks In Whispers:

‘Another artist I ignored while she was doing the touring circuit last spring. Hearing that she worked quite a bit with the Strother sisters (KING) caused me to check this album out. ‘Green Aphrodisiac’ was on repeat (I was relieved to find that this song wasn’t about smoking weed). ‘Loved the vulnerability in ‘Hey, I won’t Break Your Heart’, the synths in ‘Taken By Dreams’ and the echoey acoustics of ‘Night’.
Side Note: I found that this album feels more complete without the bonus tracks...
4) Kev Choice- 88 Steps to Eternity:
Tumblr media
This musician/emcee has been pretty relentless with his output since ‘Oakland Riviera’ in 2014. I was stoked to hear that Kev was releasing an instrumental album and was impressed with what I heard. This album takes from Jazz, Soul, Hip-Hop and Trap. I found the A-Side was superior to the B-Side...
3) KING- We Are KING:
Tumblr media
‘We Are KING’ has been five years in the making. Despite hearing bits and bobs over the wait, I thoroughly enjoyed the complete product. My favourites include the glistening ‘The Right One’ and ‘Red Eye’, although ‘Supernatural’ and ‘The Story’ feel very much enhanced with their introductory movements. This was another project where I found the A-Side more compelling than the B-Side...
2) Soweto Kinch- Nonagram:
Tumblr media
Soweto returns with a 96 minute journey of instrumentals and some rap tracks that attempts to convey ideas around the nine sided Nonagram. While I couldn’t quite figure that out, I have found myself replaying this album often too. Many of the instrumental pieces bring images of being at the start of some kind of challenge, whether it be building something, solving an equation, or just living...Had I not got this in November, I’m sure that ‘Soul Bearings’ would’ve been my most played track this year...

Esperanza Spalding- Emily’s D+Evolution:
After this album’s release in March, I heard very little discussion about this project from other outlets. I myself however revisited this project throughout the year. ‘Emily’s D+Evolution’ shows a somewhat departure to the soft, sunniness we got from ‘Radio Music Society’, to deliver a Jazz/Rock fusion LP with the straight ahead attitude of a pop record. My favourite is ‘Noble Nobles’; this reminds me of something Thundercat might write. A very close second goes to ‘Ebony and Ivy’; ‘bonus points for the fact that my nieces enjoy this song too.
Random Note: This was another project in which I found it felt more complete without the bonus tracks...
Honorable Mentions: I’m only going for 10 this year; my previous lists have seen the honourable mentions list be longer than the top 20 list itself...
Yussef Kamaal- Black Focus:
‘An electronic/broken affair. The standouts are pretty great but I enjoyed the above more...
Anderson. Paak- Malibu:
...I’m sorry to say I have yet to fully get Anderson. Paak. There were definitely some strong pieces on this album, but I wasn’t that enticed by the rest...His live performance was brilliant though...
Chance The Rapper- Colouring Book:
This deserves a mention fully on innovation and general positivity musically.  This wasn’t something I revisited that much however...
Kanye West- The Life of Pablo:
This album is effectively a culmination of all of Kanye’s stages so far. There’s an element from each earlier album on here. While I’m not feeling all of this album I cannot deny Kanye’s ideas...
Isaiah Rashad- The Sun’s Tirade:
This album goes from hip-hop to trap influenced hip-hop...or is it hip-hop influenced trap?...I found the latter more intriguing, although ‘Bday’ gets a shout...
Hiromi- Spark:
The Hiromi Trio project grace us with another project with sounds ranging from ferocious to gentle and everything in between. I just enjoyed the above more...
Chantae Cann- Journey to Golden:
There some lovely melodies and vocals on here. I felt like the 11 tracks are actually more like 6 or 7 pieces of music and so I felt a little cheated...
Music Soulchild- Life on Earth:
As far as standard RnB goes, there’s a fair bit to like on this album. I’m really feeling the head nod factor of ‘Heart Away’. I was a bit confused with the message in ‘The Girl’. I still enjoy that track as a slow jam though...
Kendrick Lamar- Untitled. Unmastered.:
Kendrick gives us what is effectively an anthology project containing demos from the ‘Butterfly’ sessions. Untitled’s 1-3, 5, 6 and the first half of 7 are strong. I found ‘Untitled 08′ paled in comparison to the live performance. I haven’t found myself returning to this that much...
Random Note: If Black Hippy were the TMNT, I reckon Kendrick would be Donnie (Be honest. Who thought I was going to say Leo?)
Childish Gambino- “Awaken, My Love!”:
My relationship with funk is flaky at best. To illustrate the point, the standouts for me are ‘Riot’ and the reflective ‘Stand Tall’...
