DAREDEVIL 1x04 | In the Blood

I love the way this exchange is set up.

First there’s the framing – look at how Anatoly gets lower and lower in the shot compared to Vladimir. Some of it’s a height difference, sure, but compare the shot focusing on Vladimir to the shot focusing on Anatoly. They start at eye level with each other at first, but in the second shot it turns almost into Vladimir looking down at him, like Anatoly is physically shrinking as he gives way to Vladimir.

And then there’s the lighting, which has its obvious symbolism when taken at facevalue and also some killer symbolism when looked at with the benefit of hindsight. Vladimir and Anatoly are both falling into shadow here, which is a nice parallel to where they’re at in terms of power. Matt’s kicking their asses, and now Fisk is making a big move to take control over Hell’s Kitchen. It’s make or break for the Ranskahovs, their darkest hour.

But then look at the differences in how their backdrops have been lit. You have Vladimir set against a very dark backdrop that shades lighter going towards Anatoly’s side of the shot, and on the other hand you have Anatoly whose backdrop is much lighter on the whole. Vladimir and Anatoly are in direct opposition here, trying to find a way out of this, and the lighting lines up with the merits of their respective. Vladimir wants to say damn Fisk, we’ll finish this ourselves and keep our pride while we’re at it, which ends up getting them both killed. Anatoly, on the other hand, wants to take the easier road. It still won’t be pleasant. Letting Fisk take over is going to be a serious blow to their pride, but at least they’ll be alive, and the man in the mask is going to be Fisk’s problem now. And it probably would’ve worked, too, if Anatoly hadn’t picked the wrong night to go looking for Fisk.

Also I love just how physically active these two are. So many hand gestures, lots of little facial ticks and really lovely expressions. Look at vladimir’s face in the last shot – just the mention of the man in the mask gets him worked up to the point that he’s visibly struggling to control himself. His jaw is clenching, his head is jerking in those short, sharp little motions. He hasn’t even met the man in black himself yet and he already hates the man’s guts. It’s such a nice, subtle way of showing who Vladimir is and where his head is at. He’s not even in focus here, barely in the shot even, and it tells us exactly how he strongly feels about the man in the mask. But then it also sets up how exactly things are going to fall apart for him. Vladimir is an angry, angry man, and without Anatoly around to act as a counterbalance, that anger ends up blinding him so he doesn’t see Fisk coming until it’s too late.

Sanji and Usopp during The Sabaody Incident™ won't leave my mind.

Usopp standing in front of Sanji protectively because he is wounded and he can't fight, so Usopp will do it for him ("I'll do what you can't do").

There is just something about Sanji's expression when he realizes he might actually lose Usopp. This is my interpretation, at least. He is literally frightened.

Usopp helping Sanji stand up to run away. This is crucial for something I want to point out later: Sanji needs help to stand up. (Also, Brook disappears trying to protect them both and saying he will do anything to save them even if it costs him his life. I am feeling sick).

Sanji being self-sacrificing and blaming himself for not being able to protect them/act sooner is not new. But he does manage to gain the strength to fight when Usopp is the only one left with him and the possibility of losing him is even more real now.

The thing that I love the most about this is not Sanji sacrificing himself for Usopp, because he does that. He is like that. But Usopp not running away or moving in the slightest because he refuses to leave Sanji on his own.

Something I'd like to point out too is that Sanji actually touches Kuma before Usopp disappears. He tries to fight and protect him and Kuma could've easily sent Sanji to Momoiro Island right away, and yet Sanji was just sent flying far from the scene and forced to see Usopp disappear in front of him.

And I am not saying that "not being able to protect both Brook and Usopp (especially Usopp) is needed for Sanji to realize he has to become stronger and find more reasons to go back with the crew" but not being able to protect both Brook and Usopp (especially Usopp) is needed for Sanji to realize he has to become stronger and find more reasons to go back with the crew.

Not to mention that we can't deny (right after Water 7/Enies Lobby) that Usopp is one of Sanji's strongest bonds within the crew. This specific scene focusing on them both is more than enough to prove it.

Sanji seeing Usopp disappear in front of his eyes without being able to do anything to save him.

Remember what I said about Sanji needing help to stand up seconds ago? Well. This is him the moment Usopp disappears. What adrenaline and the power of love do to a mf.

They are so "I can lose everything, but not you. Oh God, not you" shaped.

#witch hat tag #orufrey #er.... i'm too tired to have anything to say..i worked several days on this.#wait.. didn't i say just recently here that i probably wouldn't ever depict 'what if alaira is qifrey's sort-of ex'. What's going on #i don't even remember deciding to draw this..it's all a blur..i'm not sure why i WOULD decide to draw delicate scenes in my head #that i wouldn't really want to share with anyone/discuss so why did i draw it...#some part of me really really wants to draw things that are more and more true to myself...#maybe because of my alienation with most romance/shipping/dynamics the rest of the world depicts.#orufrey really is perfectly suited to me - what i read in the text and what is in my head. well anyway #i am TIRED of drawing poses and angles and..maybe now i will actually take a break from drawing bc of the tediousness of Angles #btw it really is a 'stretch of time' . . . assuming witches graduate age 18-20 #well orufrey are canonically 30-ish. they've only had agott around for presumably about TWO years (?) bc she took the test age 10 #and it feels like oru moving in/unknown atelier acquisition/building (?) .. i guess that could be a year or so before agott at most #(she was the first disciple) so... ????????? What about the other 7 or so years ?!?!?!!?!?! Unemployed Brimhat Hatred era #that time is very nebulous. after qifrey went to the tower i feel like it's been implied he and oru drifted apart a little.#certainly they didn't live together at first... no way. that doesn't feel like how it is based on things oru has said about becoming Eye #idk. I'm tired now. i don't usually think of alaira as necessarily qifrey's ex and this being how things went in that 'sliver of time'.#i usually prefer the idea that they have their first kiss with each other in their 30s cause That's Just The Orufrey Lifestyle #just felt like making a more relatable alternative view of my own Cai Orufrey Canon one time. btw im a big monoshipper and it hurt a bit #let's leave it there. this is surely the most i've worked on a 'single' art - though now i realise just how much longer the fic took :')

in light of tedtrent becoming so real, im also jumping on the tedtrent epilogue 😊

there's just no way ted wouldn't keep in touch with the others (and have weekly zoom meetings just like in the christmas special) and I just love the thought of the whole team having reunions once in a while.

and going back to trent's arc in s3, the sunflowers conversation, "And your daughter?" "She's never been happier." I think it could go the same for ted.. we've never really properly saw how henry felt about his dad being in london, it's always other people that told ted his son misses him, who's to say henry would rather see his dad happy because that in turn would make him happy too? he was there to win the whole thing, right? I just know ted’s story isn’t done yet when he still hasn’t learned to let others take care of him in return and who else to pair him with than the man who blew up his career because a man was nice to him (and also because they were so. so cruel for the fakeout tedbecca scenes for that finale) 🥺

I'm no writer so just pretend these are snapshots of a slow burn fic where ted visits london for their team reunion and slowly realizes that trent has a crush on him and they kiss about it 💛
