My Tumblr Birthday!

Sooooo according to my archives and such, exactly one year ago today I became a member of the bbs fandom! It’s been a hell of a year, I will tell you that.

So just some thoughts about this weird ass journey, if you’d be so kind to humor an old woman.

I kind of remember coming into this fandom not really expecting much? Like I kinda squirmed my way in thinking that it’d be really cool to like, read other peoples stories and get to know everyone. I don’t really know how, but I got attention because of my Cops AU idea that sort of caught wildfire. Then I posted my first little stories about Christmas and such before my bigger story, Want You, and I was so amazed by the love and affection it got on this platform (I put it on Ao3 but it just wasn’t the same).

I also remember how stunned I was with 100 followers? I felt like I had reached my peak and I couldn’t really go any higher. Again, I managed to get lucky by making some really good friends at the start of my fandom life and kind of being able to joke around and gain attention from them. It wasn’t any super big, but I was thankful for the time they gave me. Watching Deli draw, getting to know Kiwi, admiring Bels and Ether and Grace’s works. It was all so wonderful!

Then around January, Sherry sent me a message asking me to help with an idea about a BBS shipping server. And it was crazy how that changed my life. The server brought good and bad things out, and I won’t say I never thought of just tossing in the towel and leaving. But I’m so happy that I stayed! I met people like Sei and Shorty and Pandy and Cana and Moon through my server. I got to see them grow as people and shared laughs with them. I also got to open up a bit and learn that it was okay to not be perfect. Because damn do I want to be perfect. But they supported me there, and evern at my darkest point,those who I never thought would stick up for me did.

I learned what it felt like to be hated. I learned what it felt like to have people who didn’t know me, know my story, know my past and know my insecurities, rip me apart and make me feel worthless. I learned that sometimes, simply having a different opinion about a ship or a boy could make the nicest of people reject you. I learned that sometimes, people you thought would always be supportive and understanding of you could turn on you and never speak to you again. It was weird, knowing that despite the followers numbers that grew and the asks/fans who reached out to me and told me how ‘inspiring’ i was, I could feel so empty. To this day, I’m still struggling with this concept. I wanna figure myself out, and how I got to where I am while also not knowing who I am.

I started up one of the coolest projects in my life here; Libahunt. I’ve written stories before, don’t get me wrong. I’ve written stories for bigger fandoms, with more comments, more kudos, more views. BBS is a small time fandom, so I knew what I was getting into. But man, for such a little place, y’all have big hearts. The love, support, and just damn attention I got for this story was amazing. The fanart? I cant even begin to tell you how much that all means to me. Every time I see a piece, my heart melts to think I got to inspire someone. Hearing people freak out in discord, seeing the reblogs and comments you make...that’s all I want in life. So honestly, thank you all for making me realize how much I love this story and helping me get my ass back in gear to write it properly.

Kind of on the same topic, I really got to thank some super important people for just...being there for me. I can’t list EVERYONE because jesus I would be here forever, but these ones just...they really stick out for me.

@firstaidquarters: My writing wife, half of my brain, my HC partner in crime, honestly one of the best people I’ve met. Ever. Like, do you get how much you mean to me? How you just make my world a better place? If I’m mad or sad or hyper or just being fucking stupid, you’re there. You literally spent 28 hours helping me write a story without ever asking anything in return. I wanted to quit, I wanted to throw my computer and never look at it again. But you just...sat there and kept me going. And now? It’s fucking amazing because of you. And I never have to explain myself to you. You just get it. And God I can’t even say enough how much our HCing has been a blessing. I don’t even think you realize that without you, I wouldn’t still be in this fandom. I cannot thank you enough, even if you created that wretched Minibat.

@kihorri : We weren’t close originally but jesus you came in like a wrecking ball, eh? My life has been crazy since I did that Banana Bus Tales thing with you. You helped get my name on the map. And for the past couple months, I’ve really adored the frienship we’ve created. Our DM messages are probably enough to get us sent to hell, but I’m okay with that. Each time you tell me you’re reading my story, I melt. Like to think you’d waste your time on me? To get to joke with you about ‘certain’ types of stories and watch you draw silly pictures...it makes my world! You drive me up a wall every way you can, you make me cry from your beautiful art, but you could put the pencil down and never draw again and I’d still wanna talk to you every day. Even with your horrible sleep schedule.

@mssjynx : YOU! God you are a menace. Sneaky other writing wife. But like, one of the best writers in the BBS/Misfits fandom. You make me wanna read angst. Do you know how hard that is?!?! Like jesus man, you were so amazing with your cute stuff and your sad stuff. And you’re just as wonderful outside of your stories. I give you shit, I pull your tail, and we bicker like old women, but you are one of the sweetest people I got to meet in this fandom and even if I threaten it, I’ll never divorce you ( I mean you killed all the lawyers so...).

@piwiskiwi: My libahunt artist! Your work is AMAZING. And you are just so prescious? I dont get to talk to you as much as I want to, but you were one of the first people I really connected to in this fandom and you don’t understand how much joy your art brings me. Like, you’re a rock star. You helped me at the start of Libahunt when it was just an idea, you helped create these pictures that others now use as references. You’re kind and funny, and even if you feed into Bel’s crazy ship, you’re the best partner for Libahunt I could ask for.

Honestly, there’s so many others! I wanna write you all something because you all have changed me in one way or the other. But I’d be here all night and I don’t wanna take up all of your time. So just know this: You all made me who I am. Without you, the person reading this right now, I wouldn’t be Crim. That means the world to me. So, you mean the world to me. Thank you for being around for my first year here. And I don’t know if you guys will care, or if anyone even remembers memories with me or if I’m just an author you read, but I just...thank you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. <3

And also thanks for letting me reach 1500 followers. (Eh its closer to 1600 now, cause this happened like 3 weeks ago but I just wanted to wait until my 1 year to say it all at once. No need for two sappy posts.)

Bim's Date (part 4)

"We have to watch this!!" Mark saids happily as he looks at the poster on the side of the theater.

"Ummmm really? Its a documentary on space. I didn't know you were into that." You give him a look. Mark realized he is trying to play as Bim and takes it back. "O ummm sorry its just that I think I have been hanging around Mark to much and its starting to rub off on me hahahaha." Mark runs his hand through his hair nervous. This was actually harder that he thought it would be. He may have created Bim but he still does not know all the quirks Bim has.

"You hang out with him a lot? You told be you don't really see him that much because he gets busy and he checks up on you once in a while to see if Willford hasn't burned the house down." You remember the texts you both had been sending each other. You were nervous about asking him so many questions thinking you were annoying him but he didn't mind them. He turned out to like talking about it from the outside, sometimes venting about something Willford did to not let him have a segment, King of Squirrels getting peanut butter on the laundry after he just cleaned them, sometimes Dr. Iplier does surprise check ups and gives him surprise shots because he knows Bim would have run out, the constant complaints from neighbors about Ed trying to sell his son to them, Silver always trying to jump off the roof to practice a superhero landing and Bim falls over instead saving him, Google always insisting he is the smart one, when Host gets in a mood and Bim feels terrible not being able to help him, Yandere making creepy laughs at night that keep him up, and pretty much everything Dark does.

"O well you know just the times we have talked and he brings it up it sounded interesting. You pick out the movie." Mark insists. You pick a action movie and he pays for the tickets. You both walk in and get some popcorn, a Icee, and some candies. You go into the theater and Mark's phone goes off. He turns pale as he sees who it is. "Are you ok?" You ask him. "Is it Dark?" The thought even makes you shiver. "Im sorry I need to take this." Mark walks into the hallway and is face to face with the person who sent him the text.

"You are in so much trouble Mark Edward Fischbach!!!" Amy glares at Mark her arms crossed. "Amy I can explain..." Mark reaches for Amy but she shrugs him off. "No need. I go to the ego house to check up on them for you because you said you had to do something and no one is there. Sure enough I ask the Googles what is wrong but they don't say anything but Yellow gives in and tells me everything. I cant believe you are doing this..." Amy turns away from him.

"Amy I know this looks bad. It really does but please hear me out before you start to judge me please." Mark pleads to her. She peeks at him ready to listen. "Amy when Dark called me and told me what happened I was worried for Bim. I didn't want another incident to happen again. he told me either I did this or him and you know how bad he is. Who knows what he could have done if it is not me doing this. Im trying to protect both Bim and (Y/N). I'm sorry I didn't tell you but I felt like it was something I had to do myself." Mark looks down at the floor. Amy sighs and walks up to him and hugs him. "Your stupid you know that. I understand why you are doing this but next time tell me. I can help to you know, I care about them too you know. I mean its part of the great Markiplier care package right." Amy laughs looking up at him. Mark smiles and holds Amy close snuggling into her hair.

"Ok I will go but please be careful ok. Think about what you are doing. Not only for Bim but for (Y/N)." Amy kisses Mark. "But you are still in trouble." She pokes his chest. "I know.. am I forgiven?" Mark asks looking at Amy not wanting her to hate him. "For now and depends on how this ends." Amy kisses Mark again and takes off. Mark watches her leave and sighs. "I am the luckiest man alive." He walks back into the theater just as the movie begins.

A few minutes later the egos make it to the theater. Dark sweet talks the person in front to let them in for free and the egos enter the theater quietly. They sneak up the steps carefully so they wouldn't be noticed and sit at the top. Below them by four rows is Mark and you. Bim looks at you already with a heavy heart, you are into the movie and laugh at something that happens. Bim feels even worse as he sees you lean to Mark and say something about how cute a actor is and you both laugh. "Just as I expected. They haven't noticed a thing. it looks to me like (Y/N) is having a better time with him than you." Dark looks at Bim smug.

"No.. your wrong..." Bim tries to defend the situation but he is starting to doubt himself the more he sees you having a fun time. Even the other egos feel bad, they feel for Bim. Bim cant take it anymore and gets up to leave. He stomps out of the theater with tears in his eyes and sniffles. You hear the stomping of feet and look up at the sound but you don't know it is Bim because the theater is too dark. Mark however does and he tells you he is going to get more snacks. mark races outside and finds Bim in the hallway sitting on the floor holding his knees to his chest.

"Bim..." Mark doesn't know what to say. Bim doesn't look at him. "Why Mark... why did you do it..." Bim is crushed. Mark sits beside Bim.

"Bim I'm sorry. I thought I was helping you. Dark didn't give me a choice in the manner. and if it makes you feel better Amy already scolded me." Mark looks at Bim. Bim peeks at Mark. "A little bit.." Mark smiles at that and pats Bim's back. Bim looks at Mark. "You know despite this being very wrong it looks weird to see you really look like me." Bim saids. Mark looks at him comfused. "I mean we really do look the same but I mean wearing the same things I have and trying to act like me."

"Would you find it funny if I told you it was actually really hard being you. which is weird because I creates you so you think I can pull it off easily but no. Im a terrible actor." Mark laughs and Bim laughs with him. They sit there for a moment quite and Bim speaks up. "Mark I know you mean well. I know everyone does, except Dark he is loving this. But I could have handled it on my own really. Come on I'm Bim Trimmer I can take care of myself fine. Thank you though for caring." Bim hugs Mark which surprises Mark but he returns the hug.

"How about you finish this date? I really want to go home now and I didn't want to leave Chica alone for too long." Mark stands up. "I believe you got this." Mark gives you a thumbs up and heads out. Bim stands then turns to go back in the theater and comes face to face with you.

"I knew it... I knew it wasn't you." You stand their looking at Bim. Bim feels himself go numb. "So what you made Mark come here to see if I was just using you to get to him... I went out to check on "you" after "you" got that text to see if you were ok. I hear Amy and she confirmed that it wasn't you but Mark. he mentioned something about it being Dark's idea and he didn't want you hurt again. What did he mean by that?" You look at Bim feeling hurt.

"(Y/N) I didn't mean it like that. I didn't know about it trust me. It is just something happened once with a fan and I got hurt badly so they got worried about me." Bim tries to get you to believe him.

"It was pretty obvious we were being watched. You didn't notice that the other egos were watching us the whole time. At first I didn't think much of it but not I get it..." You feel tears coming in.

"i didn't... but please know I didn't mean to hurt you." Bim reaches for you but you back away from him.

The other egos come out of the theater and see what is happening. You look over at them, they all look guilty, but Dark. "Do you blame us for thinking this way?" Dark saids calmly. "You clearly put out a post saying you would love to go out with Mark. Although the rest of your profile suggests you are a good person it cant be helped."

"Wait you internet stalked me!" You feel worse. You feel like you were being judge because of someone else that did something wrong. It hurts badly, you tear up and one escapes. "Just because someone messed up doesn't mean I'm going to be like that. That post was done two years ago as a silly thing. but you didn't care about that did you..."

"I didn't see that.." Google saids. his eyes glow looking back at it. "(Y/N) is right... im sorry.."

"This is our fault ok. Bim had nothing to do with this and Mark was just being used. If your going to be upset be mad at us." Willford saids taking a step to you. "Bim is better than us. Please know that."

"No... I get it now. You didn't want him to get hurt. I don't know what happened before but clearly it caused problems for you enough to make the effort to stalk me to see if I was going to used him. But im not. But just from this I made all of you concerned and upset. It got Mark in trouble with Amy. I could have made Bim not want to talk to you all anymore. I knew Bim shouldn't have gone out with me but I let it happen anyway and this mess happened." You take a deep breath. " I'm sorry I bothered you all. send my apologies to Mark and Amy for me." With that you turn to leave trying to hold in the tears. Bim reaches out for you and turns you around. He holds you tightly.

"Please don't go... please don't leave me..." He loosens his hold on you and you see he is crying to. "I just wanted someone I can talk to. You made me feel like I was my own person and not just Mark's ego... I don't want that feeling to go away..." Bim just kisses you. His lips are trembling but it feels so warm and soft. He doesn't want to stop but pulls back any cups your cheek. "I like you (Y/N)."

The tears come poring down your face. "I like you to Bim... that's what makes this hurt more." You get out of his hold and walk away from him then run off to your car. You get in the car and hear Bim calling out to you but you don't dare look back and drive off home.

Bim stands infront of the theater watching the car drive away. The other egos run out after him. "It was for the best. This is why we don't date." Dark saids and he leaves to his car and drives off. Bim just keeps staring down the road the car went through.

"Bim we didn't mean for-" The doctor gets cut off by Host. "Bim wants to be alone. Nothing we can say now will help him. Bim does not want to talk to us. We have all hurt him. We should let him be." The Host saids sadly.

Silver tries to walk to Bim but Ed stops him shaking his head. "We have done enough.." They walk to the car. Google sighs and as he walks to the car he peeks at Bim feeling bad. Willford walks back into the theater and takes in so many candies and munches on them without a word as he heads to the care, an emotional snacker. Host pats the doctors back and heads to the care to but the doctor looks at Bim. Finally the doctor turns to leave.

"Doc..." Bim whispers. Dr.Iplier looks back at Bim. "Yes?" Bim finally turns to him. His face covers in tears and his suit has many drops on it. "Can you give me a new heart... I don't think I can feel mine anymore..."

(bear with me guys I know this looks very bad but don't worry it is going to have a happy ending trust me. for now all aboard the feels train. *saids while getting tissues for anyone who reads it and is open to hug anyone who feels bad)

So in the last week, I had to go away for a few days for work. It was actually a really pleasant trip. I had the opportunity to enjoy coastal Australia. I sat in a lovely restaurant eating my delicious breakfast of Torch-wood Mushrooms, Poached eggs and Polenta cakes whilst watching Whales breach in more shallow waters.

The picture above was taken by me at the stunning Middleton Beach in Albany. Pretty breathtaking really. I spent a good 20 minutes walking down that beach in the brisk cold. But I can tell you I enjoyed every minute of it. I love the ocean so much. But what I love the most is the calmness that it brings to me. Whenever I am near ocean waters I automatically feel at ease.

Apart from all of the stunning scenery and actually doing some work whilst I was away. Something else managed to happen. Whilst on my way travelling down, I received a message from a Tinder match. Given network coverage and driving laws, I waited till I had reached my destination before replying. It turned out the match appeared to be fairly communicable, which ensured further conversation.

Actually the conversation was so good that the Individual ... who for the purposes of confidentiality I will call Colin, decided to call me. It seemed like a good conversation at the time. Colin was very easy to chat to, created exceptional amounts of banter and seemed to want more than just a one night stand. (My aim is to avoid these as much as I can, I will discuss this more in another post).

When I got off the phone that night, I may have been a little Tipsy from delicious local wine, but I kind of felt hopeful, that maybe this time I could get past the first date goal post. When I awoke in the morning, Colin had messaged me a courteous good morning message, and I replied graciously. A few "How’s your day" messages were reciprocated to each other for the remainder of the day.

It reached the later afternoon, and my work for the day was complete, I was shooting off a few last minute emails, when Colin called me. The regular what did your day entail? Conversation was had, followed by more witty banter. We both decided that despite the potential of the both of us being incredibly tired as a result work; we would aim to catch up for a date the following evening. Towards the end of the phone conversation Colin asked me to send him a picture of me (A general one). I attempted to say no, on account of being very tired and in a casual state of no makeup and messy tied back hair. At this point in time Colin had seen pictures of me with makeup and with and without coloured contact lenses, and also dressed semi casual. Regardless of my hesitation to send a non glamour portrait of myself, I went against my better judgement and took a very average selfie and sent it away. What a mistake that was. Colin seemed to think I looked completely different. I did try and forewarn him, but I guess that was not enough. I then had to send some other pictures of myself from previous occasions in a semi casual state. It was damage control.

Putting all that aside, I went off to dinner, only to make myself feel bad for indulging in a carbohydrate heavy meal, inducing a "Carb Coma". Sometimes you just need to eat pasta. Upon return to my temporary abode, I called Colin as had been the plan. He didn't sound as enthused as the previous two conversations. The witty banter from before was not so present, and I wasn't quite sure when this left things. But we both en devoured to continue talking. The focus of the conversation had changed from the night before. I was even presently trying to firmly trying to communicate my want for a more long term and meaningful arrangement and Colin although stating he was on the same page seemed to be testing the waters on if a more casual encounter occurred. The plan to go out for a drink had turned into lets just hang out at home (the ever so present "Netflix and Chill' scenario. I protested the idea, and we decided to see how we both felt.

I could go on in detail and tell you all the laborious details of the date, but I am going to cut the chase, so I can actually talk about the main point of this post. A date was had, and it did end with Colin wanting to pursue a more physical and sexual ending. How could I be surprised, its generally how most dates end, these days. And how glad I am that I decided to leave before things reached a level of instant physical gratification. It would have been easy to go there. Colin was attractive enough. Not my normal type, but physically appealing in his own kind of way . But it wasn't the point, he knew it wasn't what I wanted and made a pretty dismal effort into avoiding it. The date ended awkwardly, with me trying to scurry away after things had ended hot and heavy, and me strongly confirming my want for it to not progress any further. It would be okay if that was it. But no. It's what follows that messes with your head even more.

I got home, knowing that was the end of that. But then Colin randomly messaged me a sleeping Bitstrip cartoon. Odd but maybe a small attempt at letting me know there was still room for communication. I had to reply with an equally lame message, communicating my desire to go to sleep. The next day was busy for me, but the realisation on how the previous night had ended had me wondering where exactly did i stand now? I wasn't sure if i even liked Colin, He was odd, maybe even a little socially awkward for me, but he messaged me before going to bed, so did that mean he was still interested in me?

Roll on 7pm that evening and Colin messages me asking me how my day was? A pretty evident gesture, that he was still interested perhaps. I waited half an hour before replying (I didn't want to seem too keen). Then there was nothing!!! I waited a full 24 hours before feeling exceptionally confused. Why message me if your not going to reply? Sure we all get busy. But so busy that you cant reply to one message, of someone you messaged in the first place. Would you message a friend ask them how their day was, only to actually not care. What shit is that ?

I waited till lunch time the next day, and in that time had realised that Colin was never a good match for me. Personality wise we were too different. My want to make things work probably blinded by capacity to see that we actually wanted different things. It was time to put this to bed. So being the transparent person that I am, i bit the bullet and sent a message saying that things had gotten weird, and perhaps I wasn't miss right, but i wish him luck in finding her. Funny how I got a pretty instant reply saying He wanted to message but was too busy and wasn't looking for something long term. Okay mate, why didn't you say that 2 days ago and save us both the hassle. Oh that's right you were taking you chances to see if you would get lucky in the bedroom, because you already knew I was never going to be the girl that you settle down with.

Guys these days seem to avoid responding to anything or owning anything. Maybe we have to move away from the time of "if I say anything he will think I am a psycho". We are all adults dating. How did it get to stage if it doesn't work, we ignore each other rather than acknowledging it, or we "hook up" because that fills one void, while only placing a band aid over the other. But it’s okay, right? You knew what this was.

While I mourn the loss of my Fossil Fighters blog name (im gonna reuse it as the title of the blog but still) I’m gonna talk about Villain!Deku headcanons/aus because I can

Note: this isn’t a comment on “why villain!deku headcanons are good or bad” I’m just commenting my own feelings on it and how it relates to the canon

I actually feel like Villain!Deku is a really interesting headcanon for two reasons for me.

First off, normally? Villain headcanons of protagonists are super fun for me, namely about main protagonists. Analyzing what could’ve led to their spiral into madness is cool and you know me, I love psychology. It might be easy for me to say “I like Villain!Bakugo headcanons because I hate bakugo” but that actually couldn’t be further from the truth; I want to like Bakugo and understand him on some level, and I feel like the only way to understand him would be to watch him go off the deep end. Heck Villain!Bakugo could even get a redemption, I dont care, I just want to watch this asshole crack and have his world turned completely upside down.

But Villain!Deku...something about Villain!Deku just doesn’t allow me to fully enjoy it. The second I start trying to think about it, my brain immediately rejects it. Because that’s not...Deku anymore. You could argue that even someone like Bakugo going full villain wouldn’t be Bakugo anymore, but I’m saying that quite literally, Villain!Deku cannot be Deku.

Good characters, just like people, have core values that they prioritize above all else that they wont loose even in their darkest moments. Dementia could completely render them helpless, and they still wouldn’t violate these principals. Now, some characters dont have these values clearly established. But Deku, and most of the BNHA cast in fact, doesn’t have that problem. Other characters aren’t quite as outspoken about their values and priorities, while others find their values kind of muddled in how they explain them - for example, we dont know what’s driving Bakugo to be a hero outside of the possibility that he was pressured into it and his pride wont let him let go of it, but that’s hidden in the subtext of scenes and not flat-out said to us like with other characters - but a good chunk of the characters are given clear motivations said right to our face. But motivations dont always equal morality. I’m not gonna say what Iida did to avenge his brother was wrong per say, I mean whats the point of vigilantes if you’re not going to let them kill mass murderers??, but it wasn’t exactly good either. Each character has a conviction to be a hero, but each of them all have their own personal reasons for it. Ochako wants to help her family with finances, Iida wants to bring honor to his family (I cant believe this show has two zuko ripoffs jfc), and Todoroki wants to spite his father by becoming a better person than he ever was.

Deku’s reason? He wants to bring a smile to the people he rescues. At its shallowest, it boils down to an admiration of All Might, but even then, he can admire All Might without being a hero. He’s heroing for the sake of heroing.

We’ve seen Deku in his lowest moment - and he still held onto his dream. Everyone around him said “no”, on some level he knew it was impossible, but he was still convinced that he had to do it. We didn’t see him go as low as he could possibly go, I suppose, because All Might was like “HEY PAL WANT A QUIRK?” but that was still a pretty low point.

Deku is nothing without his dream to be a hero. That’s his aspiration - not money, not honor, not spite. Hero-dome. Every other character could achieve their goals in other ways, even through villaindome (well, some things about Iida’s backstory may need to be arranged, and clearly they didnt choose that path, but still), but not Deku.

Without his dream of being a hero, well...I feel like Deku’s comment of “you cant just tell people to kill themselves, thas illegal” would be more relevant, lets just say. Deku is a very goal-driven person, and his entire personality and livelyhood revolves around his dream career. As someone who’s in a similar position, where I cant see myself doing anything except the job I have my eyes on, I can tell you that if someone flat-out told me for certain (ie like, telling the future) I would never be able to do what I love or anything like it (my dream job is writing for television, but I just want to be a storyteller in general), I wouldn’t be alive to write this post right now. And sure I’m fucking depressed but this mindset of “why should I be alive if I’m just suffering without a job in the streets?” is something I distinctly remember having since i was at least 7 or 8, well before my depression set in, so. Take that for what it’s worth.

It’s just interesting that this headcanon is able to highlight so much of what makes Deku, Deku. I’m not saying that the headcanon doesn’t work because it’s contrary to his personality - it’s contrary to Ochako’s personality to be a sly villain, but she could still align with the “bad” guys given the right reward - it’s actually contrary to his core values and motivations. Obviously none of the Class 1A students are interested in being villains, but in a “alternate scenario where they didnt go to UA” scenario thing you could plan out steps that led them to such a fate. But not Deku.

Core values are extremely important to a character. I highly implore that you focus on them when creating your character, and structure their mannerisms and personality traits around those.

PS: Villain!Deku headcanons make me want to make a protagonist with a similar sweet personality to Deku, but with core values vastly different than Deku’s values. Hell, they could even be in the same position as Deku - if there was a character that wanted to be a hero as badly as Deku, and went to UA, and had a similar kind yet intellectual personality, but their core value was “justice” instead of “wanting to be a hero to help people”, they would have a VASTLY different reaction to the events of BNHA. The events of season 2 probably would’ve led to seeds of doubt in their mind about being a hero, and could easily lead to them becoming a villain. I’m concerned for Iida and Todoroki but they both seem to have strong convictions about being a hero, and seem like they’ve “learned their lesson” already so to speak. I want to be concerned for Deku but there’s...no way he’s going to let that get to him. He might speak out, but he would never go against UA/society enough to become a villain. But if another character was in their positions? I have no idea what would happen.

Introduction

Raise your hand if you’re in complete and utter shock that A) kids are back in school B) you’re seeing PSLs in your Instagram feed AND C) your alma mater’s first football game has already happened? Whether we’re ready or not, fall is just a few weeks away… or perhaps already here if you consider the PSL’s arrival the harbinger of fall. Be honest, have you ordered one yet?!

With this colorful season and the end of the year clearly in sight, things like your final 3x3 check-in and 2018 planning should definitely be on your radar! Don’t forget to carve out time to thoughtfully prepare for those meetings and plans. When feeling tired or a bit burnt out, I often remind myself of Mark Twain’s wise words, “the secret of getting ahead is getting started.”

On that note, let’s dive in!

As we do each month… let’s gain valuable perspective from your mentee(s). Their mindset should be a guiding force in how you present this material.

Here are a few starter questions…

News

1. Google Announces ARCore

Google has been involved in augmented reality pursuits for some time. If you rewind all the way back to 2014, Google introduced Project Tango, at that time, one of the first augmented reality computing platforms. Although producing quit a bit of buzz and being used in an array of impressive creative applications, the focus once placed on Project Tango is now shifting to ARCore, which simply put, “will deliver AR capabilities to Android smartphones at a scale Tango was never able to reach.”

Google’s newly announced AR pursuit will operate almost entirely like Project Tango, but will be available on smart phones (Pixel and Galaxy S8 currently). Tango will be for Google’s high-end capabilities while ARCore will serve as an everyday AR platform on mobile.

Here are the 3 components of ARCore you need to know.

1) Motion tracking – “which estimates a phone’s relative location based on internal sensors and video footage — so you can pin objects in one place and walk around them. “

2) Environmental Understanding – detection of flat services by use of the camera.

3) Light Estimation – “helps virtual props cast accurate shadows and otherwise fit in with their surroundings.”

Now, if the timing of all this is interesting to you, your instincts are correct. As the Verge stated, “Google is under obvious pressure to compete with Apple’s lightweight version of AR (ARKit), which has produced a small wave of clever experiments since its announcement in June.”

Apple has one big leg up on Google at this point; their anticipated ARKit is about to be released on iOS 11 to millions and millions of Apple loving consumers, who have most likely been eagerly anticipating the iPhone’s 10th anniversary.

2. Microsoft Buys into Blockchain

“A growing number of enterprises are investing in blockchain as a secure and transparent way to digitally track the ownership of assets across trust boundaries and to collaborate on shared business processes, opening up new opportunities for cross-organizational collaboration and imaginative new business models.” – Mark Russinovich, CTO, Microsoft Azure.

Interest in blockchain technologies is higher than ever, but there are legitimate reasons why companies are hesitant to adopt this type of technology. Issues like latency, performance, confidentiality, and required processing power have been major stumbling blocks for business. Although blockchain currently works well for a group of “untrusted actors,” that’s not the same transaction dynamic as enterprise business. Microsoft wants to solve the issues mentioned above by making blockchain technology “more suitable for the enterprise” ergo… the announcement of Coco!

Microsoft has created a product of sorts that will help bring blockchain to the enterprise. See this PR statement from their website, “Microsoft is committed to bringing blockchain to the enterprise—and is working with customers, partners, and the blockchain community to continue advancing its enterprise readiness. Our mission is to help companies thrive in this new era of secure multi-party computation by delivering open, scalable platforms and services that any company—from ledger startups to retailers to health providers to global banks—can use to improve shared business processes.”

The Coco framework, “an open-sourced system,” first works “by replacing the tedious proof of work computation with trusting submissions to the ledger because they come from a ‘trusted execution environment’ (TEE) secured by silicon.”

In English, that means Microsoft has figured out a way for blockchains to process transactions much faster by introducing a TEE (Trusted Execution Environment). Coco also adds a layer of confidentiality on top of the ledger so that “other suppliers cant’s see the orders you placed with another supplier.”

To give you an example of how much faster transactions can happen on Coco, let’s look at some numbers. “In one test using the Ethereum ledger in Coco, the network delivered 1,500-1,600 transactions per second with latency between 100-200 milliseconds – far faster than Ethereum itself running on the same hardware.”

Now Coco is a framework, not its own ledger, meaning that it uses other ledgers (and is compatible with them all). Blockchain giant Etherium as well as many companies (J P Morgan Chase for example) are already porting their ledgers onto Coco. Microsoft will open source Coco’s code in early 2018, with a technical whitepater and demonstrations available now. (see here!)

3. Fall + Pumpkin Spice News

Before October is here, before the leaves begin changing colors, EVEN before the clocks turn back… oh yes, it’s pumpkin mania. As the pumpkin obsession sets in for fall, Fast Company went as far to say that “pumpkin spice may just be the driving force behind the autumn economy.”

With pumpkin spice products growing in number each year, this autumn cash cow is more than just a trend but increasingly becomes a cultural icon for an entire season.

Starbucks, historically strict on when beloved seasonal drinks are offered in stores, had many store managers go completely rogue in late August by beginning to sell PSLs early. Several social posts of happy customers with their beloved drink as well as a very mysterious Starbucks Facebook live video began somewhat of a PSL panic.

About a month ago, Starbucks employees even started a Reddit page support group to help deal with their fears surrounding customers who asked too early and were told no.

As I hope most of you are chuckling to yourselves or making #basic jokes to the colleague sitting next to you, let us ask some more serious questions.

If, in fact, pumpkin is such a phenomenon, how does your client play into it? How can the brands you work on play into cultural moments like this? On a more psychological note, what does this pumpkin spice craze teach us about culture and society?

1. Warby Parker Owned the Eclipse

When brands foresee a cultural moment and perfectly insert themselves in an educational, helpful, or even comical way, consumers respond.

Warby Parker, the innovative glasses company already invested in eyes throughout the US, did a nation-wide campaign leading up to and on the day of the Great American Eclipse. They educated consumers on what an eclipse was, how it would affect your eyes, and even sent out catalogs with DIY pinhole projectors so that consumers could easily protect their eyes while enjoying a historic viewing of the solar eclipse. On a microsite created for the eclipse, Warby Parker had unique content, educational information, a downloadable link to make your own pinhole projector as well as an opportunity to win a trip to their Nashville store for a path of totality viewing.

On the day of the eclipse, it became quite clear that it was in fact not only a scientific event but a media and brand event as well.

Similar to the questions posed above, how can your clients embrace moments like this? What about this campaign did you think was smart?

2. The KFC Escape Room

Escape rooms are having a moment. From a cultural trend to the brand stage, these real life adventures have the power to transport consumers to another reality – giving them an experience to remember.

With many of KFC’s employees being millennials, their staff is increasingly screen-obsessed and therefore more difficult to train due to lack of attention. In a clever marketing stunt/real life employee training program, KFC created an escape room that in VR teaches those who participate to fry chicken the KFC way.

This ingenious creative technology work was designed for the Oculus platform and had the trainees master the five-step process before allowing them to “escape” the VR escape room. With a creepy picture of Colonel Sanders haunting the room and horror-like music playing, the desire to learn quickly and get out of there is very present.

The agency design director said, “"What excites us is experimenting with new tools and mediums to tell stories. VR became an obvious choice to create an immersive experience that teaches trainees how to make KFC's Original Recipe. The escape room concept builds on the pure training and utility of the experience into something that's also entertaining and connected to KFC's iconic founder."

1. QR Codes as a Tour Guide

QR codes are so 2004 right? Think again.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board is trying to reignite the spark of interest within Hong Kong’s business district. Despite the district’s business-like appearance, there are many “hidden treasures, like temples, galleries and street food.”

By creating four different explorative walking routes around the business district (renamed “Old Town Central”) and having QR codes strategically placed through the route, an educational and entertaining tour was born. By scanning the QR codes (an easy task for all ages since the technology is not new), tour walkers would be brought to a web page giving them information about the spot and providing insight on the history and culture of the area. Now, QR codes aren’t the prettiest to look at, right? No worries there, each one is “art-inspired” creating tea pot of temple inspired codes.

Depending on interest, explorers could go on Tasting Hong Kong, Crazy for Art, Treasure Hunt, or Time Traveler, and by the names of each tour, you can most likely guess the type of tour.

Why feature such an ordinary technology in the Technology section of this session? Because often times budgets are tight and the reason for strategically using technology doesn’t have to be to impress everyone by being the first, but simply by being the most pratical or helpful.

What technology could your clients use to help or be more useful to their consumers that may not seem flashy, but it’s just plain brilliant?!

2. Alexa’s new Today in Music feature

Alexa (as well as other AI home devices) is great at giving you a quick news recap as you sip your coffee in the morning, making you feel up to speed and ready to go! What about other things to stay on top of? Like music!

Amazon has launched “Today in Music” which will provide daily updates regarding news in music, events in your area, releases, and music-related Prime and Unlimited offerings. For those thinking music trivia is a nice add-on, it has that too.

In addition, Alexa can now play mood music. So you can say for example, “Alexa, play classic rock for a dinner party.” And she’ll do it! Teaching consumers that they can tell a technology an emotion or setting, and it’ll react accordingly is very interesting movement in human expectations of AI.

This month we’re going to take a look at the current state of smart home technology and where it may be headed in the future. Specifically though, we’ll discuss how technology in our homes is “rewiring the habits and rituals of home life.” As you well know, anything that is shifting the attitudes and expectations of consumers is valuable information for our clients’ business.

Before we dive into this hot topic, name one home tech device or service that you use on the reg. Has one become a part of a habit or ritual? (wifi doesn’t count!)

Who has more connected devices in their home? Do a quick count check!

Current State of Smart Home ->

What is the state of the smart home right now? Despite cost and security concerns, this area of technology continues to grow at a rapid rate. Take a look at some of these numbers!

In the UK, 52% of consumers own some form of connected device, and 30% intend to buy a connected device in the coming year (Deloitte, 2016).

By 2020, there will be 20.4 billion connected things in use globally, up from 8.4 billion this year (Gartner, 2017).

In the US, 86% of millennials (aged 23 to 36) would be willing to pay more for a home with smart extras (Construction Dive, 2016).

However, in the UK, 48% of consumers think that connected products are too expensive, with that figure rising to 53% among 18- to 34-year-olds (Deloitte, 2016)

There's a growing market for lower-priced smart home devices. In May 2017, Ikea tapped into this by announcing plans to begin selling its own cheaper range of app-controlled lightbulbs, saving consumers money on electricity bills and smart home upgrades.

In the US, 73% of millennial women see smart home technology as a way to protect their homes (TecHome Builder, 2016).

Two-thirds of global consumers are very concerned about smart home data being hacked by cybercriminals.

From pure #’s to price and then of course safety, there are a variety of factors one has to examine before proceeding with purchasing or entering the home tech space.

First we’re going to look at categories of home tech that are buzzing right now, but then look to how the home will evolve.

With focuses on “anticipatory, contextual and intuitive” tech, the future smart home will be like an assistant that enhances whatever mood you’re in or comes alongside you to accomplish whatever task you wish.

Want to save money on your heat bill? Done. Want to relax after a long day? Easy.

1) Sensor Shortcut – items in the future will be able to turn ordinary objects into smart devices by plug-in sensors that detect status. In the future, there will be more ways to track usage and habits by means of status throughout your home.

With Chatbots and AI becoming increasingly more sophisticated, behavior tracking and coordinating between say, watering the lawn and weather patterns would be easily done. 3) Enhanced Accessibility – for anyone that has beloved grandparents or elderly parents or perhaps a family member with special needs, navigating the home is difficult without the help of another. In the future we’re going to see more and more technology that helps accessibility and eases the pressure of caretakers.

In closing, innovation always proceeds cultural change. Just think of the 10th anniversary of the iPhone we’re about to experience/celebrate. Think of the world and culture before that innovation!

This is the blockchain startup app that is projected to change the way regular smartphone users can interact with the blockchain network. From receiving over $100 million (equivalent in Ethereum) in first round ICO funding, this app is considered one of the next big innovations to hit the mobile world.
