HP Rec Fest: days 10-13

I neglected my reccing duties. This happens when you don't prep and queue all posts beforehand. Did I prep and queue the upcoming posts yet? Of course not. Onwards!

@hprecfest prompts: A fest fic, a dark fic, a WIP I'm following and a fic with >100k words. 2 Drarry and 2 Wolfstar recs.

Nature pricks them on to ramp and rage (21014 words) by @goblinmatriarch (Drarry, Explicit)

Lord Draco Malfoy may be a young man spending time in Dumbledore’s summer court, but that does not mean he needs to succumb to its licentious frivolity. He carries the burden of his lineage, the shadow of rumours, and the dignity of his betrothal to a good match. He is certainly not fool enough to be distracted by the dark curls and ready grin of the court’s stableboy, who seems to have taken up with every courtier who looks his way.

For the fest fic, I give you my favourite story from this year's @hp-bodiceripper fest. It made me laugh so much every time a bucket was mentioned. I need more stableboy!Harry fics in my life. Or to say it in Draco's words: "Surely, Draco had the self-control to be around a saucy drop-trou and his hypnotic bucket-related coquetry without succumbing." Spoiler: he did not.

Do not miss the embedded 12th century rimming debate. It is glorious.

Railway Lands (65012 words) by Maelipstick (Drarry, Explicit)

Draco finds his own way to cope with being a failed Death Eater at Voldemort's headquarters. Voldemort finds a way to destroy the wizarding world even after his death. Harry is trying to hold the world together while his mind quietly comes apart. Warnings for graphic drug use, depression and suicidal ideation, Draco being an arsehole, sex work, criminality, non-con sexual situations, shifting POVs, ofc werewolves, self neglect and self harm, general unprettiness, unplanned parenthood and references to other works of fiction.

This dark fic got its hooks in me during my last time in Drarry fandom. It's pretty unrelenting. I haven't re-read it in a long time but it's still rattling around my brain.

Gathering Home by Quietlemonhush (Wolfstar, 20/?, 74k, Explicit)

Remus flipped the light on and sucked in a breath as he looked over his classroom, as neat and tidy as he had left it the day before. The room exuded warmth, colorful and bright, playmats on the floor and books stacked up along the walls, little boxes of crayons on all of the tables. By the end of the day, ten kindergarteners would arrive to what was functionally their second home, to once again tear it to smithereeens. Eleven, Remus corrected himself—four months into the school year, a new student was joining their class.

Remus shouldn’t be attracted to Sirius Hill, not when Remus is responsible for teaching his five-year-old little brother to read and count, and especially not with that mysterious baby strapped to Sirius’s chest. He shouldn’t. He isn’t. He is not.

Really.

This canon-divergent, trans!Sirius raising Regulus und Harry fic is both a comfort fic and a story hurting my heart in the worst ways. Every single thing this little Reggie says hurts every one of my feelings, and Sirius is trying so damn hard to take care of his boys, and then there is Remus and his mother, who are both so bloody lovely I can't stand it.

This story began a long time ago. That part is already written. Nothing can be done about it now. It began with two young men—barely more than boys—who upended the world, magical and mundane alike. Grindelwald and Dumbledore, glorious leaders of the revolution, who brought wizardkind out of hiding and into the light during those last, violent days of 1899. But a winter's night seventy-seven years later is where things really kick off. Because Remus Lupin knows what to expect when you’ve been sold somewhere new. He knows it better than he ever thought he'd have to by this point. He knows how to survive. And Sirius Black is doing his best to just graduate Hogwarts and get himself and his brother away from this goddamn house. He's got it figured out by now. He has a plan. Neither of them, however, had accounted for the other messing everything up by the mere fact of just existing. (Or, the one where Sirius is heir to a pureblood first family and Remus is a half-blood servant, but a chance meeting leads to healing old wounds, stumbling into love, and just maybe accidentally kickstarting a revolution.)

For my second WIP and >100k fic, I picked this marvel of world building. I'm only at chapter 28 so I need to catch up before this WIP is no longer a WIP. The breadth of characters, backstory and universe creation is incredible. I often get bored with fics this long, but this one is so immersive and ernest in the best ways. You can tell the author wants to tell this story honestly and truly. It is a pure joy. You probably heard of this story already if you're into Wolfstar. It really is that good. Also, Pigoletta is recording the story as a podfic.

cant believe that i have had the good fortune to find not one but TWO very excellent plotty and well-written time travel drarry fics

Across the Multiverse by hsvh (110k) Thirteen years after the war, Draco Malfoy is quite happily tucked away in the Department of Mysteries as an Unspeakable. When an Auror disappears through a broken Vanishing Cabinet, it presents the perfect opportunity for Draco's research to finally graduate beyond theory. Unfortunately, Harry Potter will also be along for the ride. This has time AND space travel. A certified banger. You know when the worldbuilding makes you yearn?

Always Already by aibidil (170k) Harry and Draco, not quite friends, get sent on a mission from the Unspeakables — go to the 1980s to help in the first war against Voldemort. I'm half way through this one rn and it's been a RIDE. Honestly I'm always a bit wary starting fics longer than like 120k because it takes good writing to keep up the momentum, but I'm very glad I took a chance on this one due to good memories of aibidil's fake relationship election campaign fic.

tbh let's make that three because i can't forget my original love: If Them's The Rules by MayMarlow.

Unable to accept the aftermath of the war, Harry decides to travel back in time to become the parent Tom Riddle obviously should have had. Except that things don't go as planned and Harry finds himself part of a game with hidden rules, trying to survive while raising a boy whose understanding of family has nothing to do with love.

The tags say HP/Tom Riddle but if that author actually intended to make that relationship romantic, we haven't reached that point at all yet, 42/83 chapters and 200k words in. It's been a while since my last reread but I think Harry becomes involved with a male OC around the last few chapters, while the other parts did not have any romance at all. I've been following this fic for 8 years now and I still maintain hope of more chapters being posted. Still absolutely worth a read as an unfinished WIP.

Ok this is going to be a romantic humour fic probably. I want to write a Drarry fic where Harry gets a homework planner from Hermione, but instead of tracking his homework he starts to take notes of people out of boredom, thinking that if he wants to become Auror one day, he should pay attention to details. But he also ends up rating people, and they mostly turn out to be guys (but Harry doesn't pay attention to this little detail lol).

After a while, his main interest turns out to be Malfoy."Ran into Malfoy after Transfigurations. Stupid git with his shiny blonde hair and stupid smug face! How dare he look so good unruffled after Quidditch practice! 7/10" (I literally just came up with this but something along the lines of this.)

Harry's obsessive rating of Malfoy each day goes on for a while, until one day something happens and Harry loses his homework planner. He panics because it's really embarrassing if anyone finds it. (Especially since Hermione wrote Harry's name on the first page before gifting it to him.) A ghost tells Harry that they saw a planner lying around somewhere and Harry is relieved, but when he goes pick it up, he sees Malfoy there…holding his homework planner. :D Yeah, this is still cooking up, even I don't know everything that's going to happen. I was inspired by the post circulating on Tumblr where the HP books are rated by how handsome Sirius is. <3

So I will say my friend and I in high school were writing each other what I now understand is self-insert (or friend-insert) rpf at like 16, which was long before the internet haha. The first fic I read, I can't even remember how I found it? But I do remember it was a Drarry fic, 8th year, and ended with HP getting railed over a stone bench in a courtyard after a party!!

oooo. That's an interesting question! I know for a lot of people, their phd is really hard/lonely but I think it's really different when you're in an applied social science? Honestly, there's not a lot I would change (maybe not date a drug addict while trying to go to school haha but that's basic life advice I'd give anyway, grad school or not). I was really lucky to have some incredible training experiences and to get to do basically exactly what I wanted (which was college counseling). Even the setbacks or failures I encountered along the way ended up putting me in good places (not that they didn't SUCK but yeah). Probably the biggest thing would be that if I could change something, I'd go on ADHD medication way way earlier, it made such a difference to me.

Whoops premature posting haha! The one thing I would say is, don't do your dissertation defense the way I did? I finished my predoc internship, moved back to the Boston area on Saturday, was both unpacking and finalizing my defense presentation for Monday, which I *had* to pass because I was starting my postdoc on Wednesday, and literally needed every single hour to count towards licensure (phd stuff in applied psych is a bit more complicated than just doing your dissertation and defense). And this was after one of my committee members had COMPLETELY fucked me over about 6 weeks prior. He'd clearly not read anything I'd been sending him until then, and was like, oh maybe this could be a dissertation but you need to add a whole other level of analytics and basically double your results and discussion chapter. Which I did, but that fucking sucked.

Ohkay, oh my god, I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume these aren't my own fics bcz besides the ones I wrote back in like 2018, I only have 3 out, and one isn't even finished jnbhvghbjbh

I'm also gonna limit myself to RDR2 ones bcz how many of yall are here for Drarry and Klance fic recs these days anyway?? I thought so, lmao, SO

1) OBVIOUSLY I have to start out with Faithless, by my dear friend Necromantic AKA @absolutedisaster69 !!! RDR2, Charthur, Unreliable Narrator, still ongoing, and REALLY FUCKED UP SO FAR, I am simply in LOVE with it okay. If you're looking for a completely different take on Charthur, and the VDL gang as a whole, this is IT!! AND, lol, if you look through the comment section of that fic you WILL find me in there analysing the shit out of nearly every chapter, it's WILD and I'm WILDIN'!!

2) Is one I genuinely think needs more attention -- Burn Like Whiskey Flames by Lysandra_Lewis AKA @ithinkthiswasabadidea is still my FAVORITE MacSummers fic to date. Imagine me, STARVED for content, going into the Sean/Lenny tag only to find this TREASURE of a fic buried among fics that only really list them as a sidepair. It is funny, and wholesome, and so sweet it will rot your TEETH out. It's Francesca's only RDR2 fic and it is a GIFT to the fandom, okay, and thusly SEVERELY underappreciated. When Sean comes into the lodge and starts "wooing" Lenny? Bro I've read this fic so many times and I am STILL giggling and blushing EVERY TIME!!!! They are SO dumb, and I'm genuinely obsessed with them and this fic okay!!!!

3) I mean, come on, we've all read Lost Country by iridian(ryehouses here on tumblr), right? If you haven't, it's Charthur, and don't be fooled by the coffee shop au tag because there is SO much more to this fic. It's been a while since my last readthrough of it, and I'm nearing a point where I'll want to reread again for sure, but I'll leave you with my bookmark comment to give you an idea of how I feel about this fic: "this fic changed me irrevocably. i was and am obsessed with everything about this fic. i listened to the playlist for months. certain songs still make me go feral. ill never forget how this fic made me feel." DEFINITE recommend, always!!

(Honorary mention to Strange Visitor by Necro, which I was very autistic about in its final months of posting, and is where I decided I wanted to be his friend!! One year later and I am a pest in his DMs all the time <3)

This message means a lot to me, and thank you for reaching out.

I understand the struggle. I completely fell away from drawing for years. 5 or 6 of them if I have the count correct. between moving and the pandemic, depression and lack of time, and finally being in a fandom that wasn't all that welcoming and wasn't actually making me happy...it was difficult to find any kind of joy out of creating something for it.

Stepping back into the drarry fandom after 15 years of being away, wasn't just a breath of fresh air, but an (embarrassingly) healing experience for me. Heal Thyself was funnily enough the first fic I read because I needed a hit of astolat and that was her latest posted work.

There was so much beautiful fic and art just overflowing from the drarry community that I was inspired for the first time in years. It definitely helped that they've all been kind and welcoming :D

I feel like my main tip is going to be horribly cliche, but I would say to find a work you feel passionate about and try to create something for it. I was in the middle of reading book 4 of The Mirror of Ecidyrue and the scene where Draco is showing off his magic for Harry at the quidditch world cup was so vivid for me that I was thinking about it for hours before I finally caved and pulled out my tablet. I spent a good week on that piece just relearning how to draw and falling in love with it again. I'm entirely self-taught so it doesn't come easy sometimes.

That fic in particular has painted very vivid pictures for me, but it's also been so nice to know that it wasn't just that story, because this fandom is so talented.

Having the time is fortunately a drawback that I don't have to worry about at the moment. I am unemployed right now, so I know I have more than most on my hands. But I guess a big thing I do is put on a tv show or movie or youtuber when I draw. It's usually something I've watched before, or something I don't have to be visually engaged with at all times. Often, my husband will have Critical Role or a Dimension20 campaign playing, which can be inspiring as well.

The background noise is helpful and I don't feel like I have to give it 100% of my attention while I work or sketch.

SKETCHING. the HPtober event that bosh put together has been so helpful. I don't do enough sketching, and this has really shown me that I should engage with it more. It doesn't have to be perfect, and I don't have to throw down 100 colors of paint and make the light in Draco's hair be perfect. Sometimes, keeping it simple is not only better, but it can help you get faster and help fix problems with form or lines just with repetition. Honestly, I'd say the sketching I've done this month has probably been the most helpful tip I've used all year. Drawing Harry's hair over and over and over, has made it easier, because I find his messy hair frustrating to draw.

I'm not sure if this list will be helpful. I know it's not comprehensive, and I can't really give proper tips because I wasn't formally trained and I'm not sure what a professor might have told me...but even if it's only a little bit, I hope something might be useful.

Booktopus Appreciation Post

I had this post in the works for a while, but I was missing the perfect banner to go with it. Then, a couple of days ago, I finally came up with an underwater theme I would work around the idea of a book-loving octopus. I spent an hour on my phone trying to put something together and was fairly happy with the result until, well, until I wasn't...which was up until about half an hour ago when I decided to throw my old design out of the window and redo it completely. Because I'm nothing, if not some weird kind of a perfectionist.

Anyway, @thebooktopus, this post is for you to celebrate your wonderfulness, kind soul, incredible talent, encouragement, advice, sensibility, and perfect emoji reactions in my stories (and for no other reason than that flailing over you and your writing gives me immense joy).

You are an absolute fandom gem, bringing light and love to us all. You do so much for fandom, and since I've no idea how to reciprocate any of it, even just a little, I'll just do it in my own little ways: by saying thank you often, by going wild for your writing, and by showering you with purple love, because something that's become my thing and that's just so cool.

Pals, do you want to know how Maddy and I met? I asked for a cheerleader/alpha reader when I was about 50K into the whole monstrosity I submitted for this year's Wireless Fest, and Maddy jumped at it. I still firmly believe that she had no idea that she'd just (unwittingly) signed up for months listening to me wail about how I would never finish this and how nothing was working out and won't they bloody well kiss already. She took it all in her stride, offered advice, talked me down, and flailed, and we shared so much laughter and so many stories. One anon fest collaboration forged a friendship I'm determined to make last until at least forever, if not beyond that.

Most recently, I flailed over Maddy's I Wanna Be On You, which is the cutest, sexiest Drarry get-together I've read in a while. It made my stomach flip countless times, and I'm still utterly obsessed with every word of it. The hot smut, oh lord, Harry's possessiveness, the sweet moment between them in the kitchen. I absolutely heart conversations/scenes that happen in the kitchen. It's my jam.

Then there is Let Me Count The Ways, for which I have even less coherent words for you. This story absolutely ruined me, and did you know that there's art for it? It's included in the story, and it's precious. So, so precious. Go check it out. And read the story. Also, do leave a flailing comment if you have the spoons.

Maddy also wrote a truly fabulous Jeddy fic that I secretly look at every now and then because I love love love it. It's called I Fell Heavy Into Your Arms, and it's a complete gem, just like Maddy. I am a complete sucker for it. And while we're on the Jeddy train, Subscribed is another story I devoured that left me flailing in my own mind, unable to comprehend how simple words could wreck me so. I've decided to affectionately blame the writer 😈. I haven't had any complaints, so I suppose it's all good.

Before I simply leave a blurb to all of Maddy's stories, one last rec, namely What Have You Been Hiding Under Those Robes, Professor Malfoy?, which I have been obsessed with since I read it. There's art for it. Art that ruined me. Wanna know what else ruined me? The tattoos Maddy gave Draco. I squealed, and although it's been a while since I read the story, I'm like still obsessed. I don't think that'll ever change.

Just a quick note about commenting on my fics. I love comments and to engage with my readers. If you have a question, comment, or whatever I'm open to discussion. As long as it's not a flame, I'll usually respond back. I do ask that you read my tags, warnings, and notes as many of my fics contain controversial genres and situations. I don't bite or even claw so feel free to inquire.

Hi! Welcome to my HP fanfic collection. I became an HP fanfic reader in 2005 and then writer in 2006. I took an almost decade break in 2012 but put my toes back into the waters now and then to respond to comments or make a post on LJ. I came back into fandom full force in June 2021 when I signed up for HP_fan_fair. H/D, HPDM, or Drarry has always been my OTP, but Scarry is my second. But I also love to write the rare-pair now and then along with gen short stories. I've separated my fics out by my writing era and then by ship.

All of my fics are individually rated and have warnings. However, we did rate and tag things differently back in the day, so if you think I should add a warning or tag, send me a message. I assure you, there were no bad intentions involved.

My Drabbles can be assumed to be G to PG, unless otherwise noted. I love writing drabbles and I hope that some readers will take the time to look at a few of them. *g*

Most of my stories are now posted on AO3 and are not to be copied to any other site without my permission. (historically they were originally posted on various HP fanfic sites. Majority of H/D were on Hex Files.

Drarry & Haphne (Harry/Daphne)

The Azkaban Letters (WIP 2024): This WIP was started in 2007 and has been updated bi-weekly since summer of 2023.

Summary: Harry and Draco’s lives are headed in two different directions. One is destined for death or glory, while the other is going to Azkaban. Harry needs answers, and he goes to visit his Slytherin nemesis while being held for trial. The meetings in a barren, white cell changes Harry’s life. He learns the beginnings of his rich family history that had been denied him. And that there's much more to fight for than just ridding the world of Voldemort. HBP compliant.

Note: This fic was started before HPDH was released. It is canon divergent after HBP. This fic has two Main Pairings and both are treated with respect and will have a happy ending. I chose to use AO3's: Creator Chose Not to Use Archive Warnings because of the underage sexual scenes (all are 17 and consensual).

The Supergrass (Valentine's 2024) written for HP Sapphic's Valentines (prompt Auror/Criminal)

Summary: For the past year, Auror Hermione Granger has been coming monthly to Sister Hildegard's Wellness Emporium (attached to St Mungo's) for her Healer-ordered full-body massage because of work-induced stress and injuries. It was the perfect cover for meeting with the DMLE's main supergrass, Pansy Parkinson, who was now a trained masseuse thanks to the Ministry's Criminal Rehabilitation Act. An Act that Hermione Granger had pushed for through her connections at the Wizengamot. A contractual promise was made to Pansy that after one year, if her information led to the arrests and convictions of wanted Dark Wizards, her court-ordered probationary period of ten years for supporting Voldemort and those that served him, would be reduced to time already served. She would be free from all Ministry restrictions.

Today, Valentine's Day, is their last meeting.

Note: Supergrass is a British slang term for an informant who turns King's evidence, often in return for protection and immunity from prosecution.

More Than A Legend (Christmas 2023) A Drarry Christmas Story

Summary: Harry volunteers to be Father Christmas at Hogwarts, without truly understanding what it entails.

The first 5 chapters of this fic were written in 2009. I finally completed the final 2 chapters in 2023. In addition, the amazing Ihopeyoustaysafefromharm Illustrated this fic (FTH). This fic is a lot of fun and filled with Father Christmas Cheer!

Rating: Mature Wordcount: 18K Warnings & Enticements: Romance, Explicit Language, Sexual Content, Christmas Legend, Mentions of: Animal Sacrifice, Slavery, and Prostitution. Liberties taken with historical accuracy of Christmas' origins.

Terminal Lucidity (Autumn 2023) written for hd_career-fair

Summary: Harry leaves his Auror position when his dreams drive him to a new profession. One that brings peace to the soul before Death arrives.

This is one of my shortest but probably on of most impactful fics. It was written for gnarf and deals with caring for someone at the end of their life (not Harry or Draco). Harry is the Master of Death.

Rating: Gen Wordcount: 3.2K Warnings: MCD. Enticements: Harry and Draco become a couple later in life. In this fic, they are probably in their early 50s and have merged their families. The whole family will miss their beloved Nana Narcissa.

The Roommate (Winter 2022) written for @hd-erised

Summary: After one year in Azkaban and two years of home arrest, Draco is going off to college. Myrrdin College is Oxford’s magical college, where one Harry Potter is currently attending. Both are going for their teaching certificates with Draco specialising in Potions and Harry in Defence Against the Dark Arts. The Headmistress has insisted all incoming professors must be degreed. However, the Board of Governors insist that Draco also must live in a Muggle house with limited allowance and take Muggle elective courses before he can become Hogwarts' new Potions Professor. Harry is coerced by others into helping Draco Malfoy survive in the Muggle world.

This is a soft fic. I wouldn't say fluffy as there are major subjects discussed and dealt with but angst between the two is not present. Harry's goal is to make Draco fall in love with the Muggle world...and he might have succeeded to well. So wrap yourself up in the warm blanket of The Roommate, oh and Scamp the cat, too!.

Eight Days a Week (Summer 2022) written as a chapter fic...just because.

Summary: This is foremost a love story and second it's about those growing up years. Becoming adults with adult lives and adult decisions. Yes, Harry's a Trainee-Auror and Draco's a Healer-in-Training after the war. Yes, Harry eventually moves into 12 Grimmauld Place. And, yes, attraction happens between Harry and Draco and they fall in love, but then there's more. Draco is now free from Voldemort, free from fear of going to Azkaban, free from his Father's beliefs, and free to be the person, the witch, the woman she always felt she should be. And for Harry, it’s time to lose the shackles of his childhood and discover who he really is and what’s truly important in life. It is so wild to me that only a couple of months before I gave in and finally let myself love the Marauders characters to the full extent that they deserve, that my very first time reading a fanfic where Regulus was even a character was in a canon-compliant post-Battle-of-Hogwarts Drarry fic.

(The very first Drarry fic I ever read. and I still haven't read another if I'm being honest. but let me tell you it was a DAMN good fic and I want to read it again.)

When I read this, I only vaguely knew Regulus by name. I didn't even have an image in my mind that I could connect to him. And now, suddenly, he's pretty much all I can think about. And I just now realized that while reading that fic, if I had known even a little bit about Jegulus, then his presence in it would have been so much more impactful.

I just know that when I read it again, my chest is going to ache in a way that it didn't when I read it the first time and I am so looking forward to it.

love your thoughts about how people are giving regulus sirius' traits! i also feel like there's this drarryfication of jegulus happening in the fandom right now. i've seen so many posts lately being like "how did i never ship drarry, they are literally jegulus" or "same ship, different fonts" and i just... disagree? completely? like, yeah, there are similarities obviously but if you actually think about it just a little bit further than the surface level "potter boy dates slytherin who at one point was a death eater" they're entirely different

Hey there hayati <3 i told myself "keep this short" but ended up writing an entire character analysis so please excuse me for this. I highlighted my key thoughts with bold, if you dont want to read everything.

Tbh I haven't seen as much "drarryfiction" of Jegulus, but maybe that's because I barely engage with the Jegulus fandom at all anymore, so I don't see it.

There are some similarities, and I do like when people draw parallels (especially seeing how Draco is a Black as well), but not beyond anything superficial.

Drarry is by far much more nuanced and developed than Jegulus (it wasn't always like this, I remember when Drarry was also unbearably cringey and obnoxious - sadly most people remember them by that - but it's gone a long way since). James and Regulus have the potential to be even more than that, but from the fics I read, the fandom still has a long way to go with them.

Draco and Regulus are actually more similar than most people think, I wish people would let Regulus be a snobbish, arrogant, cocky jerk like Draco is allowed to be in Drarry. But I also think that Regulus would be so much smarter than him (I mean-- it took Draco a whole year to figure out how that closet [forgot the name] he let the DEs through worked, he's not exactly bright, yknow what I mean?; while Reg canonically figured out the Horcrux thing by himself, the only person other than him being Dumbledore and his 'gang').

Also while I do think that Regulus is much more arrogant and self confident than most portray him to be, it would be in a radically different way from Draco, who was raised as the only long-awaited son by Lucius and Cissy, who obviously spoiled him into oblivion. Reg on the other hand had a stricter upbringing, I think he would be more elegant about it, less "my father will hear about this" and more "do you know who I am?". I think he wouldn't necessarily go out of his way to "bully" anyone, but if someone looked at him the wrong kind of way, he would hex them on spot.

Another key difference is that Draco, the way we see it, was very much pressured and forced to take the Mark. I don't think he was willingly seeking out any "power" beyond simple school bullying. Reg, on the other hand? And that's one of my biggest pet peeves - how in so many fics Regulus is literally forced to take it by Walburga and Orion. While from every existing implication in canon, it's pretty clear that he was actively seeking out some kind of power in the war (in combination with the desire to provide security and safety to himself and his family).

But overall, I think the main difference between Drarry vs Jegulus is in Harry (vs James), not in Draco. Harry comes from the muggle world (vs James who comes from a known pure blooded family), from relative poverty (vs James who comes from riches), from an abusive home (vs James whos the only one in his friend group w a stable home life), from a position of having the "chosen one" title shoved down his throat without asking (vs James who seeks out glory). Harry is very introverted (James is loud and confident, surrounded by people), Harry is not very good w people (James is the life of the party), Harry just wants people to leave him alone in peace (James led all of his friends to join the Order and fight in the war). Harry was forced into the life he had while James chose it. In a way, Drarry both were forced into their fate, while in Jegulus they both actively chose it.

James -and maybe its an unpopular opinion but- is also a very underdeveloped character, even more so than Regulus (he was written for years as a side character with Lily to Wolfstar, and hasn't gotten any "main character" spotlight up until recently, so maybe he just didn't have the time yet?). He is often reduced to being the "golden retriever mum friend" (?) and often feels like a supporting character, even in fics where he's supposed to be the main lead character/narrator? (what?)

In this sense I do wish Jegulus was more like Drarry because in the latter, I feel like at this point in fandom, after so many years, both Draco and Harry get equal amount of attention to their issues. In Jegulus it feels like...James is just kind of there to be Reg's therapist? He is there to "fix him" while getting nothing in return?

James' main negative traits, in my opinion, are that he is very hypocritical, self-righteous and also the only one in his circle with the real privilege to see the world as strictly black and white (which in canon also eventually leads to his death). I think Regulus and Lily are both good for him in the sense that they force him to see the world in a more nuanced light. I want to see Jegulus where just like James explains to Reg "hey those words your mates are using? thats not cool", Reg also, in return, explains to James "hey people arent just bad and good, its more complicated than that".

Moving on, I also think that while Drarry is a proper "enemies to lovers" trope, Jegulus aren't really enemies right away. They do have negative opinions of e/o at first, but it's deeper and more personal than that. In James' eyes, Regulus is his best mate's little brother, who stands for all those things that hurt Sirius; in Reg's eyes, James is the guy who took Sirius from them.

This is another trope I hate in Jegulus fics - how James seems to like Reg straight away, while Regulus is wary of him at first - if anything, it would be the OPPOSITE. I can absolutely see Regulus interacting with James one-on-one for the first time and being like "hmmm Sirius might be onto something with that Potter guy" but James would NEVER like Regulus right away, it quite literally goes against everything he believes in.

This is why I think Jegulus is good for James (better than any other ship), because it's the ONLY dynamic in which he is forced to face himself and everything he was raised on and kind of re-evaluate his world view. I absolutely see James and Lily (in a reality where Jegulus is a thing and Lily find out about it) sitting down and Lily being like "hey you sure you're not doing the exact same thing you told me I was doing with Snape?" and James absolutely freaking about about it.

(and when you think about- yes, Jegulus and Snily actually have a whole lot of common. I already said this one on here and was absolutely butchered for it but I will say it again - Snily and Jegulus are awfully similar. James(/Lily) ignoring how all of Regulus'(/Snape's) surrounding and close friends are pure blood supermacists and wannabe death eaters; James(/Lily) ignoring how despite Reg(Snape) suffering, he is insistent on staying in the same place he is in (his family) and not changing anything to get out; James (Lily) justifying Regulus'(Snape's) bad deeds by telling himself that he had (has) a rough childhood and he "can fix him"; James (Lily) ignoring Regulus'(Snape's) hostile behavior towards his (her) friends in favor of a "better" version of Regulus (Snape) that only exists when he's alone with James (Lily); James and Lily both ignoring every red flag in existence until they are forced to look at the actual Dark Mark on their arm.

Regulus is actually more similar to Snape in a lot of ways than the fandom would like to admit - Reg would dislike him at first out of a "who does that nameless half-blood think he is, challenging me like that" place, but ultimately, I think they have more things in common than apart. Both followed the Dark Lord seeking power only to later turn on him, both had people they still cared for on the other side (Lily; Sirius), both had the "young mad scientist" vibes (seeing how Reg found out about the Horcruxes, I assume he was also messing with Dark Magic and spell creation at a young age like Snape))
