I Hear The Sunspot (Yuki Fumino) - College student Kohei is HOH and knows he may lose his hearing entirely one day. He tries to keep everyone at arm’s length, but is unable to do so for Taichi, the classmate he hired to be his note taker. (Ongoing, 6 volumes)

Veil (Kotteri) - Depicted as a series of short vignettes, Veil tells the story of the love between a policeman and a beautiful woman through glimpses of their quiet, intimidate moments away from others. (Ongoing, 5 volumes, recieving an English release in 2024)

Queer manga I'd like to see adapted

So there's definitely a lack of queer anime out there, so I wanted to talk about three that I think would make good anime. (Note: I realized all these are mainly centered around mlm relationships, so... take that as you will!)

Blue Flag

Blue Flag is one of my favorite romance manga that hasn't been adapted into an anime, and I think it seriously deserves one. It's honestly a love triangle, but one of the only series I've seen that actually does a triangle instead of an angle and does it well. It follows Taichi, a high school third year who is growing apart from his childhood best friend, Touma. Things sort of change when Futaba approaches Taichi due to her crush on Touma. The two become closer, and unbeknownst to them, Touma is gay and in love with Taichi. And as a bonus, Futaba's (female) best friend Masumi is in love with her, too!

Blue Flag is ultimately about navigating those confusing feelings of love in that weird transition between childhood and adulthood. While it's not a complicated premise, it's a beautiful, full tale of romance and friendship that would make an incredible anime if adapted fully. This is one I truly hope will get an adaptation someday.

Go For It, Nakamura!

I know this is kind of a weird one to think would fare well as an anime, but with the success of Komi Can't Communicate and anime with similar structure, I think this one would do well! Go For It, Nakamura! follows Nakamura, a shy high school boy who is completely in love with his classmate, Hirose. It's an episodic comedy with many elements that parody BL, all while celebrating other elements of it.

Nakamura is such a lighthearted read, and if it were a bit longer (another volume, maybe?) it would make a great episodic comedy anime. I honestly think it may even open up the BL genre to people who would've never considered it before. (Such as my brother. He would like this one!)

I Hear the Sunspot

Okay, I know this one got a live-action movie adaptation, but when I read it I just kept thinking of how pretty it could be animated. It follows Taichi (I know), a cheerful college student, and Kohei, who struggles with hearing loss. Taichi is able to break through Kohei's shell, and the two of them start this more than friends less than lovers relationship.

Besides the fact that it's a great manga and it's always nice to have more disability representation in anime, I think it would just look so pretty as an anime. I kept imagining a softer color palate with lighter animation, similar to something like Sweet Blue Flowers. I just think it would be so pretty.

Bonus: They should adapt Harukaze no Etranger (continuation of Umibe no Etranger), especially since the best character doesn't get introduced in what was in the movie, and I want to see him.

So that's all I had on the top of my head. Please give any titles that come to mind that would make great anime! (I will use these as recommendations...)

so, i really enjoyed earthmix in moonlight chicken and i get the vibe gmmtv wanted to build on that and give them another 'mature gays' type series/ie at least sth non-school based. im all for that on principle but sadly ossan's love sounds like.. not my cup of tea at all (unless they go slice of life/serious on it i suppose). my question is: which jbl in the vein of older/messy queers would you have handed to earthmix instead (if forced lol)?

Fujimi Orchestra

Honestly? They's be fucking BRILLIANT in this one. OMG it suits them so well. But Thailand doesn't really have it in them to do a full orchestra BL so they'd need to move it into an office or something. Not sure if that would work for this IP.

But the personalities and the egos and the battle of wits and talent and ANGST = chef's kiss!

Candy and Kiss

This is a lot softer, but the setting is fun and Thailand (the land of malls) has yet to do a BL set in a mall.

Just take over Icon Siam... you know you wanna GMMTV.

The product placement opportunities ALONE.

However, you wanted messy?

Jack o'Frost

But it's not my style. Still EarthMix would have a ton of fun with it.

Can I pick a manga?

The Finder Series (#1 = Target in the Finder) by Ayano Yamane.

Kinky and graphic (so actually it's more Domundi's style than GMMTV but EarthMix could hack it)

Mafia boss with very questionable morals and lots of fetiches picks up a student photographer and for various reasons, a lot of them involving handcuffs and rope, they end up dating.

Honestly, you know what I'd REALLY love?

A Thai take, with a happy ending, staring EarthMix of Taiwan's brilliant but super flawed Dark Blue and Moonlight.

Here's a collage of the 18 BL and BL-adjacent manga I reviewed for this small project! If you've read one of them or are at least familiar with them, I wholeheartedly recommend the other series - all of these tell very interesting stories, and they all feature such great characters in their own ways.

If you wanna read my reviews, here's an index featuring all 30 of them.

I had a lot of fun writing them, and I feel like I haven't written that much in a month for a long time. It felt nice to finally let all my feelings out about these stories, and I'm honored that some of those reviews got some likes and even replies!

There were a bunch of titles I wanted to include, as well as later volumes of some of the series here, but in the end I went with the current roster as they were the ones I had the most to say about. Maybe down the line I'll revisit this project and add more entries, but for now, I do want to get through my current backlog - I've been busy rereading for this project that there are some titles that I haven't touched yet!

I am so happy to be a part of the #QueerBookstagrammerTour again this year!

Leave it to me to wait until the last minute to get photos for this and then not be able to choose which to use. 😂 I picked a few of my favorite queer books to feature. Books that spoke to me on some level or were just incredibly fun reads. I'm happy to answer any questions!

Some facts about me:

• I'm panromantic asexual, but generally say I'm queer

• Rom-coms are my comfort genre, both books and movies

• I live in Texas with my partner of 8 years and our two cats, Obi and Winston (swipe to slide 4 to see Winston)

• I'm neurodivergent (most likely auDHD)

• I've gotten back into manga collecting after being bullied out of it in high school

• Audiobooks have absolutely CHANGED my reading game. The trauma of the pandemic sadly obliterated my attention span for most physical books

• Most of what I read these days is queer in some way

Top 9 Movies

thequeenofsastiel tagged me to list my top nine movies, so here we go.

In keeping with the title of this blog you get BL and queer romcoms only.

I’m only choosing stuff that originally aired as movies so, sorry Korean short forms, you’re out. (Or they’d dominate the list.) Some of these are really nostalgic for me since they were some of the first queer anythings I saw with HEA, so I forgive them (much as I forgive BL now) for their sins against wokeness. They are what they are.

Shelter ~ Street artist surfer falls in love with his best friend’s older brother (explains my weakness for this trope + stepbrothers). Angst + a heavy dose of familial responsibility and tortured coming out sequences.

Latter Days ~ LA party boy makes a bet that he can seduce one of the mormons who just moved in. Instead they fall in love. Great friendship group. SUPER romantic. Triggery ttriggers.

I Can’t Think Straight ~ Chronic party girl keeps trying to get married but can’t because she’s hella gay. Meets and falls in love with gentle writer, but family expectations are a bitch. Introvert/extrovert pairing + secret romance.

D.E.B.S ~ Sure it’s candy but it’s queer candy. Lesbian spy (dressed as a catholic schoolgirl) falls madly in love with evil super villainess. Straight boy is the sidekick. Musical montages abound. This one prepped me for the levels of ridiculous BL can reach.

Were the World Mine ~ has some consent/obsession issues (hellloooo BL) and fantastical elements, but sublimely fabulously gay af.

Maurice ~ what can I say? I have been and always will be a sucker for a costume drama.

Will we ever get our gat kiss? ANSWER THE CALL, KOREA!

Restart After Come Back Home AKA Risutato wa tadaima no ato de ~ Atmospheric study in rural Japan meets complex family dynamics built on a romance framework of city boy meets country boy, grumpy/sunshine. It’s beautiful and icy sweet. Slow moving in places but ultimately worth the patience, low heat, low angst, very pretty. Full review here.

This was the first thing that finally convinced me to give atmospheric BL a chance. Up until then I had watched it but kinda dismissed it in annoyance, what can you do hen you’re raised on Takumi-kun? Restart broke through that for me.

His (Viki) ~ it took me a long time to warm up to this one. His is about being a grown adult and still struggling with coming out as gay. It addresses the consequences of life choices disingenuous to identity. Nagisa turns up on Shun’s doorstep with his precocious daughter in tow. This is a touch confusing to Shun since they were each others first love. Shun has retreated from society, rejecting the world before it can reject him, already brokenhearted because without Nagisa he never had a reason to fight. Nagisa went the opposite way, tried to pretend to be something he was not and ended up with a daughter he adores and a wife who hates him. This movie is beautiful and the setting is unique and interesting but I'm STILL not wild about the ending.

Silhouette of Your Voice AKA Hidamari ga Kikoeru AKA I Hear the Sunspot ~ it’s certainly not as good as any of us wanted given how wonderful the original manga is. Also it doesn’t really end happily, but it’s on this list for what it COULD have been.

Irresistible Love 2 AKA Uncontrolled Love ~ obsession whipping boy romance but with a kinda happy ending quite violent, lots of tiggers. Why is it here? Well I found it after Addicted and Advance Bravely I was just so happy to see any kind of even slightly good resolution out of China at this point. Sure it’s challenging, but that’s what early BL is about. Of course I have only the secodn movie up here because the first one ends on a cliff hanger.

I do LOVE Big Eden but I also didn’t find it at the right time. Too late on this one to make it truly formative for me.
