When Impulse died, Gem already knew the games were over.
"We're so dead, Scott." She as Impulse fell back, an arrow in his throat. Her hands gripped her bow harder. She really didn't want this to be a bow fight.
Scott still lingered a bit behind, looking at Impulse, at his body, sprawled akwardly.
"Scott. What are you doing?"
"Just a second, Gem." he kneeled besides his fallen team mate "Please."
Gem shot another blind arrow, hoping to hit someone, anyone at all. Scott cradled Impulses's face, stroked his cheeks, and passed his hand over the other's eyes, smufging Impulse's yellow face paint.
"We never got to that band rehearsal, huh?" Scott gave a weak laugh.
Gem couldn't look at them anymore. Not when she felt ready to cry and the voices down their hill were getting louder quickly.
"We need to go, Scott. Now."

When Scott came to her, it was all too quick. He stumbled his way over to Gem, one hand holding his sword in a weak grip and the other pressed on his side, trying to keep the blood from draining faster.
He fell down near the back of the Secret Keeper, planted his sword on the ground and handed her item after item, weapon after weapon.
"I don't think I can make it," he said as he gripped Gem's hands, his eyes struggling to stay open "but I rather you be the one to do it, Gem."
She nodded and he kissed her knucles, the blood on their hands staining his lips. For a second, Scott's eyes flashed red, the blood lust shining through.
"It was a pleasure playing with you." he gave Gem a pained smile.
When her sword hit his heart, Scott's blood splattered over them both and, for a second, Gem felt relief.
Closing his eyes was the hardest part. Once so full of energy and life, now dull and grey, lifeless. Her hands smudged his blue face paint and replaced it with his own blood.
She didn't realize she had started crying until the tears hit the blood on Scott's face.

Dying isn't all that it is hyped up to be. It's not eerily calm or quiet. Quite the opposite. Gem thought, as Scar dealt his final blow, that death was really loud.
She was angry at first. How couldn't she be, when victory had been so close?
But after a second or two, there was nothing else to feel. Not anger or sadness, not even contentment. There was just Gem, alone with her own body on the ground.
Not that she could really reconize the body as herself, anymore. The Gem on the floor was too greyed out, painted by blood and void, too different to how she could ever remember being. Death was weird like that, she guessed.
She walked to the Secrer Keeper, who seemed a lot bigger when she looked up at it. And even with no face, it seemed to smile at her. Gem couldn't stand to look at it. But she still did.
Gem couldn't actually press the button, but just standing in front of it made sense to her.
'Fail', the sign read.
"Another one." she smiled "But I wasn't that bad."
She turned away and slowly climbed her way up the hill. Her straicase was in shambles but it was worth the effort.
At the top, she ran her fingers on pink wood, the subtle and familiar smell of the cherryblossoms mixing with the weird metallic smell of blood in the air.
Gem walked to the edge of the diving board.
"This was fun!" she yelled to the wind "Thank you for the music!"
And then there was nothing but silence.
