Steve didn’t realize how small his couch was until he had to sleep on it. He tossed and turned until he found a semi-decent sleeping position. It felt weird when he woke up, not at 6 a.m. S.H.I.E.L.D. had given him a week off for the new adjustment with you and he thought it’d be best to forgo his usual routine until you both had adjusted.
So instead of going for a morning run, Steve got up and quietly slipped into his bathroom to get ready. As he stepped out of the bathroom, you rose to life. Steve waited for you to stretch and put your hearing aids back in before speaking.
“We’ll get breakfast and then go shopping.”
“Okay.”
He left so you could get ready. You stepped out in a different zip up hoodie and the same leggings. The only shoes you had were the ones that the random agent gave you, still too big no matter how tightly the laces were pulled. Steve noticed the change in hair color after you came out of the shower, having shampooed and conditioned more times than probably healthy for your hair, but he didn’t say anything. When the two of you reached the street, Steve realized he had already messed up and the day hadn’t even begun.
You had taken a taxi home from the airport because he had been taken to the airport by a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent to fight the Battle of New York. Now this morning, looking at the street he saw his mode of transportation. A motorcycle. That didn’t even have a sidecar or helmet. He didn’t need Clint to tell him this was absolutely not safe for a child. He opened his phone to call Natasha.
“I don’t have a car.”
“Can you drive one?”
“I… no.”
“I’ll tell Nick I can’t come in today.”
You and Steve looked comical as you both sat on the curb waiting for Nat. He was already trying to think about how he was going to rearrange his schedule. He had to find some time to learn to drive, and then get the license… and learn sign language from Clint, and take care of you, and find a babysitter when he went on missions, and… Steve shook his head. The list was getting longer and longer and he was starting to question if twenty-four hours was enough in a single day to do even half of the list. He also had the growing realization that he now had to catch up to the twenty-first century quicker than he had planned.
Nat finally showed up and Steve opened the backdoor for you to climb in. The three of you stopped at a cafe for breakfast. They watched you take small bites and not talk as everyone ate.
“You changed your hair,” Nat commented. “It’s pretty.”
“Thank you.”
“Did you do it this morning?”
“Unh-unh. Last night. Ste— Da— He did it.”
You pointed your fork at Steve. They both saw how you tried to figure out what to call him but none of the words seemed to fit right in your mouth. And Steve was no help because he didn’t know himself what sounded right. So for now you both seemed to accept the vague word of ‘he’.
“Good work, Rogers,” Nat said.
Breakfast was finished and the first place it was agreed that you would stop was the clothing store. You got fitted for a couple pairs of shoes and clothes. Nat and Steve let the store clerk lead you around and find things that you liked. They hung a ways back so they could talk.
“It’s blonde.”
“Yeah, definitely mine then.”
“You ready for this?”
“Not at all.”
“Everyone would understand if—”
“Nat. She’s my kid. I’m not adding onto her problems by giving her away.”
“Alright. You know they’re going to train her right?”
“What?”
“Steve, this isn’t a normal child. If Nick just wanted to tell you she was yours, you might never have actually known. She’s a mini super-soldier and trained by HYDRA. The agency isn’t going to let it go.”
“They can train her all they want, she doesn’t fight.”
“Steve…”
“No. That’s a child. Normal or not. She doesn’t fight.”
“Okay, Captain. But when the time comes, I don’t know if you’ll have much of a choice… oh that jacket looks nice.” Nat’s voice changed so quickly as you approached them.
You frowned and looked at Steve, pointing to the flowers on the jean jacket. “I can’t tell—”
“Light purple.”
Steve quickly answered, sensing how you were growing frustrated. He used to be like that when he came across certain shades that made it damn near impossible to try and guess. He relied on Bucky usually to subtly tell him which color he was looking at and would always just say dark or light because using the specific color name meant nothing to Steve.
“I want blue but light like this.”
Steve nodded and walked with you to where you had found the jackets. He sorted through until he found the pale turquoise flowers decorating one. You nodded and shrugged out of the other jean jacket to put it back on the rack. The bags were reasonable, you only bought enough. It was two loads of laundry at the absolute most.
The furniture was even quicker than clothes. You lived a simple life but Steve wasn’t sure if that was your actual personality or if it was because that’s how HYDRA forced you to live. It was just a bed— mattress ordered for delivery— a dresser and bookshelf. Steve had to convince you to buy a singular nightstand and lamp.
“Do you guys have dinner?” Nat asked as the car pulled up in front of the apartment building.
“We still have some leftover pizza.”
“I hope you’re not going to feed the kid pizza every night.”
“We’ll go grocery shopping after we put up the stuff. The store’s a five minute walk… oh, be careful Sarah, or not.”
Both Steve and Nat looked in surprise as you lifted the two large boxes that held the pieces that made up your dresser and bookshelf. It shifted a little and Steve grabbed the bigger of the two boxes from you, handing you the smaller nightstand instead. You weren’t as strong as him having only half of his serum-jacked genes but you were clearly stronger than the average twelve year old.
“We’ll be fine Nat, thank you. I’ll see you next week.”
“Thank you, Ms. Natasha,” you said before walking up the stairs to enter the building.
Steve gave a final waved to his friend before rushing to follow you. The mattress arrived just as you two came from the grocery store. You put up the groceries while Steve started to set up the furniture. It had been a day and even though the kitchen was now fully stocked, both you and Steve agreed on finishing the leftover pizza.
“Your mother, Elise. What was she like?” Steve asked, tentatively. He didn’t want to upset you like yesterday.
You looked at the pizza and then Steve, before sighing in resolve. There wasn’t much you could remember about her now. Her face was even starting to become fuzzy, they killed her the day after you had turned seven. She was your teacher and only friendly face. Big hair, she had big hair.
“She was nice.”
The DMV lady was also nice. She let you sit in her office while Steve was learning to drive. He had a week. He really had all the time in the world but Steve felt he needed to learn as quickly as possible and was determined to do it before going back to work. So Nat dropped you two off at the DMV and the nice lady let you sit in her office. You were watching TV in the break room, intrigued since you had never been allowed to watch TV before.
“You’re doing good, Captain Rogers.”
Steve almost laughed, even the DMV people used his title.
“Not quite a motorcycle.”
The lesson continued for another hour, Steve picking up everything quickly— minus his slightly too wide turns. He thanked the instructor and they both exited the car and stepped back into the building. The office lady directed Steve towards the break room where you still were. He heard the workers whispering to themselves as he walked by, people tended to forget he had super hearing not just strength.
Most of it was about you, trying to figure out who’s kid it was because no one believed it was Steve’s. The most funny but incorrect one was that you were related to Happy Sam Sawyer— one of his former Howling Commandos and the only black one— and had no family left or maybe were just visiting and that’s why you were there.
“Sarah, we’re all done.”
You looked over your shoulder to see Steve in the doorway. You jumped up from the couch and followed him out the building to the bus stop. Nat couldn’t pick you up since she actually had work. Steve and you got off two stops early to your confusion.
“Your apartment isn’t on this street.”
“Your file said your mom taught you a lot. I figured you’d want some books.”
Even after watching your eyes light up in the store, Steve noticed the two of you walked out with only three books. One fiction, two not. He came to the conclusion that the simple life wasn’t your style but the only way HYDRA had allowed you to live.
You sat at the table while Steve cooked dinner. He was pretty sure snacks weren’t supposed to be before dinner but he gave you one of those weird popsicles in a plastic tube. You munched on it while reading a textbook.
“Anything interesting?” Steve asked, in attempts to make some form of conversation.
You looked up at him, mouth stained purple.
“The Romans used to make dodecahedrons out of bronze mainly. And Tomoko Fuse made an icosidodecahedron out of a single sheet of colored paper which seems impossible.”
“Icosidode… what?”
“Icosidodecahedron. A polyhedron with thirty-two faces, not all the same shape. Polyhedrons are 3-D objects made of polygons since polygons are only two dimensional and the icosidodecahedron uses triangles and pentagons as its poly— I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to. I wasn’t trying to sound precocious, you just asked me to explain and, and…”
Steve set the spoon down and rushed over to where you were crying. What did HYDRA do to you?
“Woah, woah, woah, Sarah. Calm down. Calm down please.” Steve placed a hand on your knee. “Hey, hey, come on, doll don’t cry please. You’re not being precocious. You like this stuff and I asked you to explain.”
“They didn’t like it when I sounded too smart.”
“Well we’re not with them anymore are we? You’re smarter than me kid, that’s cool, okay. Whenever you want to share some smart thing with me, don’t hesitate. So icosidodecahelion?”
“Hedron,” you whispered.
“Hmm?”
“Icosidodecahedron.”
“Same difference, right?”
Steve smiled when you made a face as if he was dumb. That was the reaction he was looking for, something other than crying. He wiped at your tears and returned to the stove, asking you to finish your explanation from before the tears had started.
“Can we make one?” you asked as Steve set down the plate of pasta.
“Um, sure. What do we need?”
“I want to make it out of straws and ribbon.”
“Okay. We’ll get it tomorrow? After my lesson?”
You nodded and began to eat dinner. After you bid him a goodnight, Steve climbed into his bed thankful to not use the couch again. He groaned and rubbed his eyes wondering what he just agreed to make. He wasn’t sure if he was even going to remember the name by tomorrow afternoon.
More importantly he was worried about you hitting a breaking point. This was the second time in only three days something he’s done had made you cry. He was unsure about what caused a negative reaction and reminded you of HYDRA. Steve sat up again and grabbed his laptop and opened it up.
“Hi, Clint.”
“We’re learning emotions today, Cap. Do you remember the alphabet?”

SteveTony Weekly - Best Fic of 2022
Tumblr media
It’s the last day of 2022! We made it, friends, and so it’s time for my annual list of my favorite reads from the year. All of these are amazing, and I spent hours on this list because I kept stopping to reread favorite bits. Check ‘em out. And feel free to send me your favorite reads of 2022!
~*~
Think of This as Solving Problems (That Should Never Have Occurred) by Sineala
No one knows Tony is Iron Man. Then Tony gets amnesia, and literally no one knows Tony is Iron Man.
Sine is always a real treat to read, and I had somehow managed to miss reading this in the past, so I got to enjoy it this year and it was just--lovely. No one does identity porn the way Sine does.
Some Kind of Personal War by sara_holmes
And Tony realizes that working out who the Winter Soldier used to be and who he is now are two entirely different things.
The rest of this series is also amazing, but the first part is Bucky/Nat--it’s only part two and three that introduces Stevetony. The entire series is well worth reading, though.
Teenage Dream by Etharei
"That," says Tony, tone unmistakably smug despite his split lip, "is Captain America. Who, by the way, happens to be my godfather."
I am a sucker for age difference, and also for Steve being utterly protective and besotted, and I loved this verse so much I think I read it twice in December alone.
Magnetic North by msermesth
Tony joins Steve on his post-Secret Empire road-trip-slash-pity-party.
Turns out the road home is paved with a lot of arguments and sex.
I dug into comics this year, but I still haven’t gotten to Secret Empire, but I really enjoyed this--I had enough working knowledge of the story that it enhanced my reading, but I didn’t feel like it was necessary to enjoy the slow progression Steve and Tony had to each other.
Like a Comet Streaming On by Sineala
Tony escapes Afghanistan with a functioning Iron Man suit and a perfectly normal heart. He even manages to bring Ho Yinsen home safely at his side. But he may as well have lost everything... because his wolfbrother is dead. Six months later, the Avengers find Captain America, frozen in ice, miraculously alive. Everything and everyone Steve has ever known is gone -- except his wolfsister, the recipient of the lupine version of the super-soldier serum, who was frozen in his arms. Tony has everything but his wolf. Steve has only his wolf. This is how their lives fit together.
I love the worldbuilding in this, and the grief that Tony goes through, the slow bonding between Tony and Steve (and Libby) is just--perfection.
Mr. July by jibrailis
Tony is the only one who can defend Steve's virtue. Tony hates his life.
It’s just fun. That’s all it is. Just pure fun.
One-Man Army by Captain_Panda
Takes place immediately after the Chitauri attack in Avengers 1.
Steve is running himself into the ground. Tony notices.
Then Steve gets knocked down hard. And Tony intervenes.
This is absurdly long, and had been unfinished for a while--when it was finished earlier this year, I put it on my list to read and it was even better than I expected--despite the length, it’s exquisitely plotted and perfectly written, and held my attention throughout, something that’s rare during a fic that long. It’s well worth the read.
For the Love of a Dragon by Captain_Panda
When Steve went down with the Valkyrie, he thought his days with dragons were over.
Then he meets Tony Stark, who inherited Howard Stark's dragon.
As the kids say: "It's complicated."
This entire series is perfect--the world building of dragons in a modern, canon compliant world is just--flawless. I adored the dragons, I adored how different they were and how well they interacted with the people they chose made complete sense and just--I adored it.
Dangerous Kitchen Tools by ladyshadowdrake
Engineering prodigy, billionaire, and heir to the Stark Industries empire, Tony Stark turned the business world on its head by opening a restuarant and burying himself in the kitchen. Years later, he covers an informal evening cooking class for his friend and fellow molecular gastronomist, Bruce Banner, where he meets famously camera-shy comic artist Steve Rogers.
I really love chef AU’s and this was just so lovely, soft and sweet and perfect. I loved it.
all in by spqr
What matters is that Steve only hates him 99% of the time now, and the other 1% of the time they laugh together and fight side by side and they’re friends.
Tony’s used to having to wring little bits of love out of people.
He can do it.
I really love SPQR (which is why they’re on this list twice) and this is a flawless little CW AU.
Patriarch by spqr
Steve ducks into the hall and comes back with a warm, freshly-laundered towel, which feels so good when he wraps it around Tony’s shoulders that he almost lets out a moan. “There we go,” Steve says. “Don’t want you to catch cold.”
“Thanks, daddy,” Tony quips, because he’s an idiot.
Except Steve’s close enough, his hands wrapped around Tony’s biceps through the towel, that Tony can feel his full-body shudder.
Here we have my most read fic of the year. I think I read this once or twice a month since it was published in March. It’s all my favorite things--mafia, age gap, daddy kink, dangerously possessive Steve. It’s amazing and perfect and I’m gonna go read it again.
angels who sin by meidui
Summer air is thick and sweet, like Tony's voice pouring honey into Steve's throat, telling Steve more than he needs to know. He's here with his parents for the summer, he just finished his first year at college, he doesn't believe in God but his parents make him come to church.
"They said you can help me find faith," Tony says, as mischievous as he is innocent, and Steve is as good as gone.
Priest Steve, Twink Tony and meidui’s gorgeous prose? That’s it, that’s everything.
seven years in heaven by meidui
Tony gave Steve everything in the divorce. Their beautiful Brooklyn brownstone and everything in it, Tony's beloved Audi, their private garden upstate. Tony even offered him the lakehouse, but Steve had looked up at him with red eyes and begged softly for him to stop.
Tony gave Steve everything, every last piece of himself. He didn't take much with him when he flew out to his mansion in Malibu, but he took every last piece of Steve, too.
This ached and hurt me in the best ways and then it put me back together.
you great unfinished symphony (you sent for me) by ketchupcrisp
The last thing Steve Rogers ever expected to see on a Wednesday afternoon was his (their) dead submissive tumbling out of a portal and practically into Phil’s lap, very much alive and frantic about Soul Stones and timelines and some other version of the team.
This is technically poly, but the heavy focus is on Stevetony, and the world-building is just…very very well done. Excellently done.
Forty-Seven Flat by geekymoviemom
Steve Rogers was on the top of the world. He was one of the top students in his class, a world-class athlete, and had a man who loved him. Winning an Olympic Gold Medal seemed like the perfect addition to his picture-perfect life.
But only four years later, Steve’s entire world has come crashing down around him, leaving defending his Olympic title the only thing lying between him and utter ruin.
And then, the unthinkable happens.
I’m a huge fan of superfamily, and sports AU, and this one is so well done--it’s a little unrealistic but fun and made me cry so, winner winner.
Without Irony by tsukinofaerii
Open file TS_762-b.ims... Sometimes, when a drive is completely broken, the only thing to do is wipe it clean and start over. When he wakes up, Tony has no idea who he is, or what he did to end up where he is. Depending on who he talks to, he was a villain or a hero, a genius or a degenerate. What he is now is still up for debate, but it doesn't look like he's going to have much time to figure it out. With a computer in his head screwing up and a country falling to pieces, options are getting limited. Steve The world needs Iron Man a lot more than it needs Tony Stark.
I’m a huge fan of fic that covers Tony’s mind wipe and this one did such a great job of that. And then it follows up with part two (below). I looove this little series so much.
Per Expectations by tsukinofaerii
After the events of Without Irony, Tony wakes up with a freshly rebooted memory and nearly all of his memories from before the deletion and none after. Nearly all isn't nearly enough, and what's missing just might be the most important thing he's ever forgotten. Tony's not sure he wants to remember, but if he doesn't it's going to be the death of him.
Tabula Rasa by Sineala
Sometimes superheroes save the world. And sometimes they're too late.
Captain America's longtime villain Superia had a plan for revenge. She stopped the Avengers from ever finding Steve in the ice, tore the Avengers apart, and turned the world into her own personal authoritarian dystopia. A team made up of Captains America from across the multiverse came to set things right: they united all the remaining superheroes, took down Superia, and made sure the world would find Steve again.
Tony spent Superia's hellish reign as her prisoner, a suicidally-depressed disembodied brain trapped in a jar for years on end, begging the Avengers to kill him and put him out of his misery. The Captain America Corps instead gives him his freedom, a brand-new body, and even the Avengers -- including his very own Captain America. But Tony's not entirely sure he wants to be here. He's walking wounded, and he thinks some wounds are too deep to heal. He thinks there's no chance the Avengers will ever be what they could have been. He thinks there's no way Steve will ever be the friend and partner he could have been on so many other worlds.
Luckily for Tony, Steve happens to disagree with that.
I really loved this. It was sad, and it hurt to read because of how Tony was depicted, but it was just--perfectly done.
The Last Love Song of Anthony E. Stark by jibrailis
After contracting an Asgardian virus, Tony starts forgetting things. And people. And Steve.
This is a fandom classic, and I finally got around to reading it and I was absurdly pleased with it--like it was so much better than I even hoped it’d be.
Relativistic Heat Conduction by BlossomsintheMist
Age of Ultron-based, but not entirely canon compliant. Written for the 2013 Cap-Iron Man Reverse Big Bang. Ultron has attacked, obliterating most of the world's superheroes and resistance in a matter of hours. The remaining heroes band together and share what strength they have to get through it, to survive, and defeat Ultron once and for all. Steve Rogers grieves in the wake of the disaster and the heroes' defeat, and no one knows if he will be able to provide the leadership they need--but Tony Stark isn't about to let him slip away that easily.
This is extremely sad. It was a dark sad read that I loved so much. I especially loved the end--it shouldn’t have been possible to pull off a happy ending, but somehow, it worked, and it was sooooo good.

So warm and tender
Tony Stark x Daughter!reader
A/n: Hello! finally the last part of Ember. I hope you guys like it and sorry for making y’all wait so long for the confrontation lol)
Tumblr media
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Y/n’s POV
“Aunt Pam?!” you say in shock as you stop struggling against the vine wrapped around your body.
“Y/n, is it really you?” your aunt said as the vine loosened its grip and gently lowered you on the ground. “ Where have you been? Everyone has been going crazy looking for you”
You don’t answer as you look at your aunt. You didn’t realise you missed her as much as you did but now all you want to do is throw yourself in her arms. So you did.Pam, sensing you needed comfort rather than an interrogation, wrapped her arms around you. “I missed so much my Petal.”
With those five words, all the hurt and pain you bottled up came out. and you cried.
As you cried, your aunt looked at the girl she hasn’t seen in eight years, and wondered what she’s been going through and if she did the right thing by giving you to your father all those years ago.
“Petal, I think you need to explain what’s going on”
You look up and sniff, “ Yeah, i think an explanation is well in order.” and you tell her everything. From the years of being ignored by your father, your last argument, the two weeks you spent in captivity, and your new powers.
“ And that’s when I found you.” You finish looking at the grim faces of Pam and the other woman, who now that you think about it looks really familiar.
“Oh, you poor puddin’!” you found your face being squished between two ands and then you were comically pressed against a body in a tight hug.
“Don’tcha worry bout a thing, me and Pammy will take care of everything, you just sit here and---”  This seems familiar...
“ Harley, I don’t think she can breathe.” “Oh right, now you remember, it the blonde woman who used to sneak into the apartment”. You think to yourself as you struggle to get loose from her grip. You hear someone snicker and see Danny looking at the commotion.
“ Shut up Danny, where have you been?” You say, forgetting that you’re the only one who can see him.
“Exploring, do you thing she could hug me like that too?”
“ If you weren’t already dead, I’m sure they would kill you for that comment”
Pam and Harley look at each other in concern as it seems like you’re talking to yourself.
“ Hey kid, if you’re gonna talk to yourself, try an’ do it when other people can’t see you, like me.”  The blonde says as if someone talking to themselves was a daily occurrence for her.  You explain that with your powers, you were basically dead and can speak and see other dead people. Hearing that, Pam’s expression darkened
“He let you die?” she said in a grim tone. All the vines and plants in the room started whipping around angrily as if they were looking for the person who wronged you. It was then when you realized it wasn’t your Auntie Pam who taught you how to plant petunias you were looking at, this was Poison Ivy.
“ Men, you can never trust em’. Well, whadda say little flower, ya up for a little premeditated murder?” and that was the infamous Harley Quinn.
“ It would’ve been nice to know that you’re related to scary criminals y/n....” Danny said in a fearful voice. And if you were being honest you just found out that your aunt Pam was also the Poison Ivy but to be fair you haven’t seen her since you were like eight.
“I don’t want to kill him” you finally say. “ I don’t want anything to do with him. Nor his precious Spiderling.” The plants calm down as Ivy calmed down and was your aunt Pam again. “ What do you want to do?” she asks.
You think to yourself and say,” I want him to know how he made me feel, and then I want to stay with you.”  Your aunt and Harley froze when you said that.
“Petal, there is nothing I want more than for you to stay with me again,” She started, “ But it isn’t safe for you to stay.” Your eyes started to water
“But I-I have powers now, I can defend myself! I won’t be any trouble, it’ll be like I’m not even here” At this point, anything was better than going back to being invisible. “Please...I don’t want to go back...”
Hearing the desperation in your voice broke Pams, Harleys, and Danny's heart. Pam because this was the daughter of her closest friend. She vowed to protect you from anything the day you came to her after losing your mother. Seeing you like this just reminded her how she, in her mind, has failed you. Seeing you so desperate to get away from the man who broke your heart reminded Harley of herself. The nights she would sneak into the tiny apartment you shared with Pammy, in hopes of escape only to get drawn back with empty promises. So yeah, she had a small soft spot for you. And Danny, you were the only person who saw him after months of being invisible. He felt like he needed to help you in your mission to get your father regret ignoring you.
“Hey Pammy...maybe we should call him...” Harley started to suggest.
“NO, I’d rather drink weed killer than go to that...orphan collector for help.” the red head spat. “ No. We’ll figure it out but she can stay here for now.”
Hearing that you had a place to call home now, gave you the motivation to go and confront your father. Not only for ignoring you, but for leaving you in that..cell for two weeks. He didn’t even attempt to look for you as far as you knew. You’d have thought at least one of the other Avengers would have came to save you. But no one came. After all those years, no one came.
“Y/n.. your eyes” Danny whispered, his cold hand touching your arm snapped you out of your mind. The neon glow of your eyes faded to your normal e/c.
“ Aunt Pam, Harley is there any way you guys can get me to New York and back?” You ask, finally ready to confront your father.
“ Well....” Harley say as with a smirk
~~~~~~~~~one terrifying ride on a stolen batplane later~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Upon arriving to New York you made Pam and Harley wait a few blocks away from the tower, as you really didn’t want the Avengers to find out your aunt was a wanted criminal. You “went ghost” as Danny like to call it and snuck into the Tower with ease. You then snuck into your room, seeing everything covered in a layer of dust as no one has been in there for over two weeks. You packed a bag and filled it with some clothes, books and a picture of you and your mother. You took that bag and walked to the door, looking around at the room that was both you prison and safe space. It was decorated with multiple trophies, medals, and ribbons all from the multiple sports and clubs you joined to impress your father. Not like that ever happened. Danny wander around looking at the multiple teams photos you had hung up.
“ You’re a volleyball girl?” he said, “ Huh. I’d never have had guessed.”
You rolled your eyes as you finished packing. “ Hey I have a job for you.” you say turning to him. “ I need you to go to the control room and turn off the power for thirty minutes. Then turn it back on and come find me in the common room.”
“ Yes ma’am” Danny says, saluting and disappearing through the wall before he comes back. “Ummm, wheres the control room?”
You roll your eyes and explain how to get to the control room and wait. When the lights go out and you’ll make your move. Your father would have to pass through the common room to get to the control room from his lab, which you assume he’ll be. There you’ll be waiting for him.
The lights go out. It’s showtime.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tony's POV
The team spent three more days searching for you. They followed every lead and half of the team even flew out to the building that collapsed an hour ago. Tony, Steve, and Natasha stood behind to look at more clues. It was a little past midnight, and both Steve and Natasha went to bed leaving Tony to tinker in his lab. Tony was making improvements to a certain spider suit as he thought about what his daughter said to him before she went missing.
“Sir, there seems to be someone in Y/--” FRIDAY started to say when the power cut out.
“FRIDAY??” Tony questioned as he walked out to check the control room, making sure to get his nano bracelet just incase. As he walked down the hallway he thought about waking up Steve and if he was brave enough to wake Natasha when he heard it.
“Hi daddy.”
Tony stopped dead in his tracks as he looked up in disbelief. The lights turned back on to reveal his daughter. Wearing a black halter top, spandex leggings, grey boots with elbow length gloves. She looked skinny, as if she hadn’t had a proper meal in the weeks she was gone. And for some reason the air was cold in the room. But there she stood.
‘Y/n” Tony said breathlessly.
As you wait for Tony to walk in,you look around the common room and reminisce. You think about the time when you first moved in, and you got lost trying to find the bathroom and accidently walked into Natashas room. YOu thought she was going to kill you but ended up walking you to the restroom and back to your room. Or when you made the volleyball team way back in eighth grade, and you ran home to tell your dad but ended up telling the whole team, who were rarely all together, and they all took you out to get ice cream, minus Tony. You had to admit, even though your dad didn’t pay attention to you, Nat and Steve did. As well as the whole team, but those two really became the parental figures in your life. That’s why it hurt when not even they came for you. Even they had forgotten you.
“Hi daddy” you said in a mocking voice. Your father stopped dead in his tracks, as he looked you over in disbelief.
“Y/n”, he said in a breathless voice.
“Oh, you remember my name?” You say in an sarcastic tone. “ Didn’t seem like you did when you left me in a hydra cell for two weeks.”
Hearing that you were a prisoner of Hydra made Tony’s blood freeze.
“Hydra? Oh Y/N are you okay? What did they do to you?” He asked frantically as he walk towards you with the intent of checking if you were injured. You jerk away from him, avoiding his touch and say
“ Oh, I’m wonderful. Just so fucking fantastic. I was just experimented on and injected with various liquids that caused excruciating pain. No big deal”
“ Y/n..we spent days trying to look for you. Me and the team--”
“You and the team what Tony? I was there for two weeks. TWO WEEKS I WAS POKED AND PRODDED. I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO DIE.” You scream, anger filling your heart as you remember the agony you went through. You think about the scratches on the wall of the cells, the taunts from the guards, and screams of the undead.
“ You have no idea what I went through. What I’m going through.” You say, feeling your body grow colder as you lose control and start to shift. “ You don’t care about me. If I were Parker, you would have saved mem within SECONDS.”
“That's not true. Y/N you have no idea how much I love you.” Tony tries to say. He’s filled with the need to tell you everything he didn’t tell you before. “I know I haven’t always been the best father. Trust me I know that now. But if you give me a chance, I want to make everything right. Please.”
You didn’t think it would go like this. In fact you were not at all prepared for Tony to say this. You expected to walk in on him continuing his life as normal, tinkering in his lab and such. You had always yearned to hear him say those words to you. But now, they just fill you with anger.
“You think you could just tell me what I want to hear and what? I’ll just act like nothing happened?? I know you’re not that stupid.” You spit, the room growing colder as you get angrier. “ It’s too late for all that Tony. I’m not the same girl i was two weeks ago.i won;t take it any longer.”
“Y/n..your eyes” Tony says as he slowly starts to put his gauntlet bracelet on, realising that you are becoming a threat.
“ Oh do you like them?”, You ask “ This is what happened when they injected me. I can also do this.” You shift, shades of blue taking over brown skin. Tony stared at you in awe and a bit of fear.
“ Y/n this isn’t you. I know you’re angry but--” “ Isn’t me?” You interrupt.” You don’t know me. You don’t know what I’m like. And even if you did the old me died in that cell. Literally I died” You and Tony stared at each other. and that's when you heard the doors open. Two sets of footsteps started rushing to the commotion.
“Y/N some red head and beefy blonde are on their way” You hear Danny say as you realize you had to wrap it up. If anyone can convince you to stay, it’s Steve and Nat.
“ It doesn’t matter anymore Tony.” you say as you start walking to the window. “ I can’t stay here anymore. There’s nothing for me. You win. Peter can be the child you always wanted cause from now on, consider me dead.” and with that, you phase threw the window and let yourself fall, knowing that you won’t actually fall as you can fly.
Tony freaks out and calls for his suit, only to see a blue blur shoot up and across the sky. Then he just sits there and stares. The footsteps reach the common room and he hears someone ask
“ Stark..what was all the yelling. What's going on?”
“she's gone” He says, and that's when he truly realizes his mistake. He became what he never wanted to become. He became his father. And now you were gone.
I rlly like what they've done this episode and imo it's the best possible way they could've taken things post endgame. HOWEVER the problem to me will always be that steve's incomprehensible ooc ending has left everything after off kilter in a way that can't be put right without rewriting endgame. the way they've written bucky's feelings is well done and sam getting the shield is great but steve's gaping absence is undeniable. If he had died it would be like,,, a justifiable sense of offness? Like of course everything is weird if their friend was suddenly torn away from them but that isn't what happened the mf CHOSE to leave and apparently told them abt it beforehand. It's just unfixably wrong.
it’s really messed up to want your favorite character to have died but it would have made so much more sense? imo tony stark was the wrong character to kill off. he was already retired, and it would have been very easy to write around him. there was no major marvel project about his friends coming out. there was no reason a billionaire with a wife and kids and a business he can run from home would feel the obligation to continue being a superhero
steve on the other hand, pre endgame steve would never stop fighting as long as his body could allow it. even in the comics, when his body is aged to 90, he continues to fight. I’m not saying steve didn’t deserve a happy ending. because he did. but in my opinion nomad/fugitive steve was a content character. he had sam and nat by his side, he had bucky healing in wakanda. he had a family and a place in the 21st century that he had forged for himself. and he was fighting for what he believed in, not what the government told him he should believe in.
so I can see how this posed a problem, bc you want a show without steve focused on steve’s friends and learning to navigate the world without him. sending him back in time to an alt timeline was probably the worst possible choice. killing him (as emotional and sad as it would have been) would have forced this narrative without tainting/ruining his character and the relationships the character had. sam, being forced to navigate becoming cap alone. bucky, his anchor ripped away and finally experiencing what steve had already been thru twice—the death of his best friend.
how could they have done this? it’s very easy to imagine. steve hears sam’s voice in his ear. the battle ensues. but steve realizes the only way to end it is the gauntlet, and he knows it’s a suicide mission, but it wouldn’t be the first time. he jumps on the grenade and puts on the gauntlet. bucky rushes to his side. they both know he is dying. they exchange the same lines as what endgame actually gave us
steve: don’t do anything stupid while I’m gone
bucky, crying: how can I? you’re taking all the stupid with you
bucky: I’m going to miss you
steve, light slowly fading from his eyes: it’s going to be ok, buck....
(for all the st*ggy fans the fade out could have been steve dancing with peggy with fuzzy lighting, figuratively reunited)
how does sam become cap? WELL GET THIS!!! steve absolutely broken over the loss of his friends took to writing letters to them, and in one of them to sam, he writes how he always thought sam would be the best man for the job, and if he ever got the chance he’d pass the shield to him in a heart beat, and he regrets not doing it before it was too late
the beauty of it is that the show could have functioned almost exactly the same, just instead of having to remember the No Good Awful Thing steve did, they’d be genuinely mourning and learning to come to terms with his passing
I want to preface that yes, I recognize Comic!, EMH!, and 2012-fanfiction-air-vents!Clint supremacy, I am probably too sleep-deprived and fangirly to think straight/remember things correctly, and that yes, this was probably influenced by my ✨quirky✨ liking of cold weapons like swords, daggers, and yes of course, bow and arrows
This is also not aimed at you. I am not angry at you. I am just tired of thinking I have a bad taste in liking characters (well maybe I do)
Look, hot take, if you’re not saying “it should have been Thor” or “it should have been Steve” or “it should have been Hulk”, don’t say “it should have been Clint”
Like imagine you have this perfect family and friends
I know you do don’t pretend
And you lose it in an instant. Perfect relationships, all gone. Won’t you be on your villain arc? Mans cut his hair and got a ton of tattoos, got the whole mental breakdown setup
And I know going off killing people is wrong and only making Nat a redeemer trope (iirc) is also wrong but can’t you at least understand survivors guilt??
People see Pietro dying and don’t remember Clint literally shielding the kid with his own body, ready to die
People see nat dying and don’t remember Clint wanted it to be himself too
People don’t remember Clint figuring out the tesseract portal opens both ways before Erik fucking Selvig, just like Nat figuring out the stones’ placements before the PhD Havers™️
(Going on a stretch here) People don’t remember Clint risking exposure of his family to find a safe house for his team. They don’t remember Clint supporting his best friend (AoU helping Nat into the house when her love interest was RIGHT THERE) even when he himself was badly hurt (Avengers 2012, med bay)
They don’t remember Clint seeing the potential Avenger in Thor when he was crying in the mud like a baby. They don’t remember him introducing Ant-Man to the Avengers when nobody knew who he was and he ended up playing crucial roles in future films. They don’t remember him recruiting the Maximoffs and Natasha, looking past the bad things they did when they didn’t know better and believing that they can do good
Do people not think that without the Cap Fanboy Arc in the MCU, he teamed with Cap because he was once brainwashed and understood how Steve (and we) believed that Bucky did no wrong (and that we deserve more winterhawk content)?
Man I can go on and on about how in CACW Nat and him were just normal people w/o OP gear doin some cardio and fake fighting like the besties they are
Anyways, if the fans can spot the blurry pic in TFATWS’ museum is the one taken by that one person w a camera in CA:TFA of Steve holding that broken taxi door, they can realize that Clint is among the people who are able to throw the shield, presumably with minimal training (AoU, first fight with ultron after the party)
If they can deduce that Bucky is a rich kid from two lines (“my folks wanted to give you a ride” in CA:TFA: owning a car during the depression; remembering throwing what’s equivalent of ~$50 for a redhead girl in CA:CW) and then coming up with the headcannon of Bucky‘a family started the chain bookstore of Barnes & Noble, they can understand that Clint haS A PERSONALITY.
Please for the love of god stop doing him dirty in the TV series
Also if they gave him a family only for him to get divorced I’m coming for the writers
black widow reviewish? but it’s just my thoughts™️
i just watched black widow thursday night and i am shook. i'm going to do two separate reviews; one WITHOUT spoilers and another WITH spoilers. the one without spoilers will be here and the one with spoilers will be beneath it.
Tumblr media
SPOILER FREE REVIEW:
here are some stuff i guarantee to you:
you will miss nat
other than that? it was really good. i think it'll be in my top 5 marvel movies. obviously, it takes place before she dies lol and she deals with her past. it was funny, action packed, and the COMPLETE opposite of boring. literally the shortest 2 hours of my whole entire life. there was no scene where i was like 'damn this is taking a long time', like i said, ZERO BORING PARTS.
i would so recommend this movie, although, for people who haven't really watched the mcu or care for it might not enjoy it as much as they should but this movie really connects into the mcu timeline. we learn so much about her past and things are starting to make sense again. black widow definitely answered a lot of questions about her past which made me feel so happy because nat has been treated as a 'sidekick' for so long and to see her finally have a black widow centered movie? wow.
also, yelena????? (aka florence pugh's character) i am in love with her. i love her so much. i hope you will too because she's really funny and relatable.
also, keep in mind that this movie is supposed to explain natasha's past because i feel like a lot of reviews that criticize the movie are forgetting that
damn, well all that is left to say is that i cried and that i hope you love the movie <3
REVIEW WITH SPOILERS BELOW:
omfg guys this movie shook me. i cried multiple times. i have so many things to say!!!!1!1!
Tumblr media
first off, critics that are saying that the whole idea of a villain in this movie is weak. i somewhat agree??? taskmaster seemed to be a lot less important than portrayed in the trailers. then again, this movie wasn't supposed to focus on hero vs. villain i think? like it literally takes place after civil war because marvel needed to have a redo on their misogynistic take of nat. but also this movie is to show us her past. if anything, the movie was hero vs. their past. taskmaster was there just because but was not the main villain.
it's cool if you disagree with me because i haven't read the comics and whatnot. i do wish that they used taskmaster better but the movie obviously had a purpose to focus on (nat and her family/backstory) so too much could've just been a distraction.
also thought it was cool that taskmaster could copy the fighting style of everyone. as i was watching it i was like 'oh, wakanda forever! captain america shield throw! black widow pose! winter soldier knife throw!"
Tumblr media
anywhooooo, i cried the most when yelena was at the table with the fam fam and they were hurting her feelings without even realizing it. and then when she was like 'the best years of my life was fake and you didn't even tell me' i was so gone. i was dead. i really understood her in that moment and i wanted to hug her so bad omfg.
also????? i just want to know... did they teach the girls how to braid their hair in the red room? was there a class for that? everyone's hair was so fucking good lol
Tumblr media
parts of the ending also gave me super captain america: the winter soldier vibes. like when nat lets taskmaster out from the room and she's like ya know don't fight me pls it's like steve with buck in tws. and the fight being the sky just reminded me of the helicarriers from tws. but then again, steve and nat were cool buddies so it's not weird that they became similar.
FIGHT SCENES. oh my god, action packed amazeballs. like i wasn't even expecting that. mcu has great action/fight scenes but in black widow? DAMN. what specifically amazed me in this movie is that in the past, they've downplayed the aggressiveness of fighting. but they didn't hold back for black widow. every punch, kick, and throw emitted so much power and rage, which is exactly what you'd expect coming from a bunch of russian spies. i loved that aspect so much.
Tumblr media
THE CREDIT SCENE OH GOD. throughout the 2 hour long movie, i fell in love with yelena and i'm not even kidding. i love her so much. i just want to hug her (as stated before lol). to see her there at nat's headstone. i started crying then fricken valentina showed up. i was shocked while at the same time i was fricken like jesus then could've been a sad and touching moment for yelena. i also wonder if they meant for valentina to be introduced in black widow first or tfatws first? like which one was the original original idea? because of the bonk bonk release dates. i seriously want to know.
more onto the credit scene, the time in between yelena whistling and what SHOULD’VE been nat whistling back? longest like 5 seconds of my life. the silence was deafening. i fucking cried.
black widow is fucking great but i still wish we got to have her funeral :(
omfg i can hardly think of anything else, i am just so overwhelmed by how good that movie was. i'm going to miss natasha so much but at the same time i'm so happy that we are SO definitely going to get more of florence pugh as yelena. and yelena is such perfection i love her :) anyways, when it comes out on disney+ for free i will rewatch it a million more times :)
Almost every reviewer on YouTube wasn’t satisfied with this movie IMO they said it was just Marvel combined some elements from other marvel movies so they could throw fans a BW movie so we could stfu, it didn’t do justice to the the character ,what do you think, is it really that bad.
To be honest, I've been working on this one for a while but I keep writing and deleting my response. Because all the things I want to say sound gatekeeper-y, in one of several ways.
I think you can be a Nat fan and not read the comics. I think you can be a Nat fan and never talk about her. I don't think you need to know everything about canon and be an "expert" to be a fan. I'm not interested in a locked-gate version of fandom. I don't think this movie should just be for die-hard Nat fans. And I don't think that all Nat fans will like this movie, for a variety of reasons.
Despite all of that, a lot of the comic book/movie expert reviews I've seen feel, to me, like they were evaluating a movie that isn't the one this movie was ever trying to be, and missing some of what the movie explicitly says it is because that doesn't fit what they want from it.
A bit more spoilery and a lot longer under the cut. I am so sorry I'm like this.
This movie felt tailor-made for me. Not because I loved every answer they gave, but because the questions they asked are ones I've been waiting to hear since 2012, when I first saw Avengers and then immediately went back to see the rest of phase 1. I think people disliking the answers is a legitimate opinion, and I'm looking forward to detangling that with people. What surprised me in reviews was not reviewers disliking the answers, which is legit, but not even seeming to realize the questions had been asked.
Most prominently, what felt like the huge thematic arc of the movie to me has been nonexistent in so many reviews that I've started to feel like I made it up, even though I took notes of exact quotes so I could reference them. The movie isn't a Nat origin story, and it's not about her as a cool edgy villain, so not seeing either of those didn't bother me. It's a movie about Natasha's trauma and how that manifests, and how her attempts to break free of it have harmed others in the past, and how she can move forward from that. We never get the key that unlocks the history of Natasha's past, so if you approach this as a puzzle box, it's going to fail.
THIS INDENTED PARAGRAPH IS THE CLOSEST I GET TO DIRECT PLOT POINTS, FEEL FREE TO SKIP
Specifically most of the reviews seem to view Nat's motivating guilt as over how she escaped the Red Room, particularly one casualty she deemed an acceptable sacrifice. But as I interpreted it, Nat's guilt in this movie came from a much closer place: the other Widows were all she'd had, and Nat being able to escape the Red Room made the Red Room hold on to the other Widows that much tighter. She thought she'd taken it down, but she was wrong. So her freedom, essentially, came at their expense. Natasha working to take down the Red Room this time is personal both to avenge her own trauma and to make up for her guilt in the Red Room still existing and creating more trauma for her peers. Without this context (and to be clear, I have gone back over the quotes several times to see if I'm misinterpreting and I really don't think I am), the idea that all of her guilt is over what she did to a single person makes more sense, but it also makes the movie a lot less interesting. If Natasha is justified in blaming Alexei and Melina for condemning her back to the Red Room, how could the other Widows not blame Nat? To me the entire story swings from that, and by not acknowledging Nat's (inadvertent but still very real) responsibility for continuing the cycle, the movie would feel hollow.
PLOT POINTS OVER.
Many critics they seem to feel like the potential this movie introduced was wasted because Nat's dead, so what's the point. First of all, the point is she's Nat and we care. It's not like we went in to Iron Man expecting that we'd have a decade of a franchise; we cared in the moment, and this movie is asking for the same thing. It delivers for over two hours of NOT murdering Natasha, which is more than I can say for Endgame.
To be clear, BW does set up other things for the MCU, and it's but if you're only watching it for what it's going to tell you about the future of the MCU (and I get it, because that's how I'm watching Loki, and it's a very different type of watching than I did for FATWS), this probably IS going to be a disappointment, because this isn't a big crossover event movie; I mean, none of Sam's "Big Three" show up at all. But again, that's about the movie someone wanted it to be, not the movie this was aiming to be.
Is this like a lot of other Marvel movies? Kinda. It's definitely taking a lot from Civil War for its set-up. Its arc felt like a close mirror of to Winter Soldier to me, to the extent that I'm planning to rewatch that on Thursday so I can see how much that's just me projecting my fave onto it. The third act is very Marvel-third-act-y, as adapted to Nat's character; the adapting to Nat's character are the parts I like and the rest is kind of what I consider the MCU price of admission.
I also kind of hate that it feels like the last few movies- Black Panther, Captain Marvel, now this and some rumblings about Shang-Chi- have all been kind of dismissed with "it's just the Marvel formula." It is, but that doesn't change the fact that different protagonists make it different. Dr Strange is pretty much just "Iron Man 1 with cool magic" and people didn't mind, but "how does this formula change when the protagonist is fundamentally different than the archetype to this point?" is apparently not different enough. I get Marvel fatigue, I really do, but for me it's tempered by how, in this case, Nat doesn't have the moral clarity Steve or Thor or even Tony or Scott has. No one in this movie lets her forget that she's a trained killer who little kids look up to.
Again: there are parts of this movie that don't work. I also don't ever ever EVER want to seem like I'm saying that if someone didn't like this movie they're not a real Nat fan or they're wrong. I know there are reasons to not love this movie, and I'm sure I'll figure out more the more I watch- it may not make me not love it, but it will at least complicate it for me, and i think we all know I live for that shit. Moreover, I intimately know how much it sucks when something you've been enthusiastic about and anticipating for ages doesn't pay off and everyone else seems to like it- it's isolating and upsetting and you just sit there wondering why no one else understands, and that's bullshit and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. People who don't like this movie are valid!
But if someone has a history of seeing Nat as just background, or considering her as a T&A deliver system more than as a character, or caring about hot women with guns but not care about the trauma that turned them into that, or saying they like movies about women but just not THIS woman for every comic book movie about a woman not there for them to ogle, or claiming to be experts in all things comics while doubling down on their theory that Yelena wouldn't appear because she was in Agent Carter (YES THAT HAPPENED, MORE THAN ONCE, THE NORTH. FUCKING. REMEMBERS. AND WISHES THEY KNEW WHERE THEY SAVED THOSE SCREENSHOTS), I don't need to weight their reviews heavier than the adrenaline rush I felt watching this movie.
So in answer to your question, I don't think the movie was really "that bad." I think this movie delivers in very specific ways, which definitely are not the flashy ones or the "every Marvel movie builds to the next great EVENT" ones or the male power fantasy ones, and if those ways aren't the ways you care about, it's going to be a disappointment. Even if those AREN'T the ones you care about, it could be a disappointment for any number of reasons, some of which I noticed during the movie and some of which I'm sure I'll be surprised to read about Friday morning.
But it wasn't one to me. For whatever it's worth, despite the movie's flaws, I loved it, I haven't stopped thinking about it in five days, I can't wait to see it again, and I hope that whether other people do or don't like it, they want to roll around in it as much as I do to pick out every single shred of canon worth overanalyzing.
If this is all we ever get for Natasha- and it is a CRIME if this is all we ever get for Natasha but that doesn't mean it's not so- I am grateful that this is what we got.
Tumblr media
Epilogue
When you’d had a chance to shower and eat and attempt to feed the new baby you were taken to a room to recuperate.  You’d been advised to sleep because the baby would likely sleep for most of a day and then you’d never really get a night of good sleep again until she moved out.  The problem was now that your powers had kicked back in, you were anything but tired.  You’d been in bed for weeks now and you wanted to do things.
Natasha and Clint only had eyes for their daughter though.  Not that you could blame them, this had been a journey that had taken a long time to get to and you were happy that they were soaking up that feeling of getting everything they thought they couldn’t get.
Kate popped her head in, evading the medical staff to come and check on everyone.  “Hey.  You guys are awake.”
“Yeah,” Clint said, without looking up.  He was cradling the sleeping infant and staring down at her with the purest expression of love.  “I’m exhausted but there are certain individuals who can’t seem to settle down after a full day of labor apparently.”
Kate crept in.  “Can I see her?”
“Of course,” Natasha said.  “You’re always welcome.”
Kate took a seat beside Clint and he carefully put the baby into her arms.  “What’s her name?”  Kate asked.  She looked slightly awkward holding the baby.  Like a little kid being asked to hold her sister.
“Oh…” Clint said.  “We never really agreed on one.”
“It’s Katie,” Natasha said.
Everyone’s eyes snapped to Natasha and Kate’s mouth dropped open.  “What…?”
“Really, Nat?”  Clint asked.
Natasha smiled.  “It has to be.  If it wasn’t for you, Kate, Katie wouldn’t have her dad.  Of course, we’re going to name her after you.”
“Wow,” Kate said.  “And I was just joking when I suggested Kate.”
“You don’t mind do you?”  Natasha asked.
“Mind?”  Kate asked.  “I’m honored.”  She looked down at Katie in her arms.  “Hey Katie, I’m gonna be your cool aunt that you can tell anything to.”
Clint got up and stretched.  “Babe, I know you’re not tired, but they gave us a room with a huge ass bed so that we could stay with you and I’ve been through some shit.”
“Clint, don’t swear in front of the baby,” you teased.
“Shit, sorry,” he said.
“We can try and sleep,” you said.  “When Kate is done meeting her namesake.”
Kate held out Katie to Natasha.  “That’s okay.  Just wanted to make sure everyone was okay,” she said.  Natasha took the baby from her arms.  “It was all very dramatic.”
“Wouldn’t be our baby without a dramatic entry,” Natasha said.
Kate grinned and got up.  “Get some rest.  I’ll be back tomorrow with flowers, and candy, and a huge pile of Hawkeye baby clothes.  With a name like Katie Barton, she’s definitely going to be the next Hawkeye.”
“See you tomorrow, Katie Kate,” Clint said, as Kate left the room.
He flopped down into the bed and dragged you down into his arms.  “Give me some more of those sweet kisses.  I have a bunch of bruises.”
“Okay, but then you have to tell us what happened,” you said.
He brought his lips to yours and kissed you slowly and deeply.  The spark passed between you both and you hummed softly as he healed a little more.  Natasha climbed in behind you and cuddled up to Clint.  He pulled back from you and rolled on to his back, guiding Natasha up into a soft kiss.  “God, I missed you guys,” he sighed as she pulled back.  She put her head on his chest and held onto him like she was worried he’d disappear again.  “I can’t believe I nearly missed Katie being born.”
“But you didn’t,” Natasha said.
“I’m sorry I worried you,” he said.  “It was stupid really.  Complete rookie move.  Steve had me up on the roof, but it had a huge blindspot.  They came in from there.  Cornered me.  I don’t really know why they kept me for so long.  They’d ask me stuff and I’d play dumb.  Sometimes they gave me a beatdown.  Then Katie came.”
“Well, I’m glad you’re back,” you said.  “Not only because we finally discovered my only weakness is worrying myself sick about you when I’m nine months pregnant.”
“I’m back now,” Clint said and pressed a kiss to your forehead.  “But I am really tired.”
“Get some sleep,” you said.  “When Katie wakes you up, it’s all going to be different.  You’re a dad.”
“Mm… and you’re both moms,” Clint said with a smile.
“Finally,” Natasha joked.  “This is the kind of different I’ve been waiting my whole life for.”
Clint hummed and took out his hearing aids, setting them on the bedside table.  You and Natasha cuddled up against him, linking your fingers over his chest.  It had been a long, long road here, for them more than you.  Here you were though.  A mother, and a girlfriend, and happy, ready to start this new chapter in your lives.
~ END ~
fics i read this week:
 I read some bucky x natasha fics:
Head Is Not My Home by taralkariel
Summary: The Black Widow is a legend. Legends aren't made cheap.
Shaken by the events of Civil War, Natasha Romanoff goes back to familiar ground to hide. To hide and remember how she became the Black Widow. How Natalia Romanova would do anything to save her father-figure. How she was one of 28 ballerinas with the Bolshoi - no, one of 28 Black Widow agents with the Red Room. Now after years of working solo SHIELD has assigned you as part of the Avengers and it’s there that you’ll face your most difficult times. **********
Since joining the avengers Y/N had been on a few missions. Nothing too big and nothing that required more than two partners. If the shapeshifter’s mind had been more focused on it then she’d be insulted that she wasn’t getting bigger missions, but just like the Winter Soldier her mind was on other matters.
Sitting in her room Y/N flicked through movies on her television in search of something suitable for both her and Bucky.
“Hey doll,” Bucky greeted as he walked into Y/N’s room, a tray of drinks and snacks in hand.
Doll. It was a pet name that had just slipped out of Bucky’s mouth one day. While it was said completely by accident neither Bucky nor Y/N found an issue with it. And after seeing the just barely visible shy glance Y/N had shared with him the first time he said it Bucky made a vow to keep using the pet name.
To tease her. Bucky told himself. To tease her like friends do.
“Hey,” Y/N greeted back as she shifted over in her bed in order to make room for Bucky. Though recently she’d noticed the soldier, no matter how much space he was given, would always sit in a way that left them touching.
Not that Y/N minded.
“Find a movie yet?” Bucky asked as he got into bed.
“No,” Y/N huffed. The woman passed the remote to Bucky, a silent command for him to pick the movie.
“Right, let’s do this then.” He said, clicking on the first movie he saw, which happened to be Brooklyn.
“You picked that for the title.” Y/N said as she reached for her drink.
“No,” Bucky denied, unwilling to tell the shifter that he had absolutely picked the movie because of its link to his home.
“Sure,” Y/N answered with a roll of her eyes which were still all white and still as beautiful as ever to Bucky. “Whatever you say, Brooklyn boy.”
Slowly through the movie Y/N and Bucky drifted closer together. Bucky’s arm curled around Y/N before she curled into his chest, her head on his shoulder and mouth inches away from the man’s neck. I’m cold, she told him before focusing back on the movie. It was a lie, and both of them knew it. Bucky could feel the girls hot breath against the crook of his neck, tickling him with pleasure. Their legs intertwined as they realized they craved more contact from the other.
Soon enough the movie was forgotten about and all they could do was focus on each other.
“What are we doing, Bucky?” Y/N asked as she looked up at the soldier. Back in her days as his trainer at Hydra never would Y/N have thought that she’d be in this type of scenario with Bucky.
“I don’t know, doll.” Bucky admitted. His metal hand came to brush against Y/N’s cheek in a soft caress. His touch leaving behind goose bumps across her skin.
“Do you like it?” Y/N asked with bated breath. Bucky gazed down at her, rolling on the bed so Y/N was beneath him. Propped up on his arms, Bucky made sure to keep his weight off the woman as he looked her over.
Bucky couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt butterflies like this.
“Yes,” he answered truthfully, “do you?” He asked, praying Y/N had the same answer as him.
“Yes,” Y/N whispered. Gazing at Bucky’s baby blue eyes the shifter tilted her head up just as Bucky lowered his. A breath apart they leaned in and-
And FRIDAY’s voice cackles through the speaker in Y/N’s room, demanding they suit up for a mission before the two can even touch lips. With a groan Bucky pulls back, cheeks flushed he goes back to his spot at Y/N’s side. All’s silent between the two before Bucky finally speaks up.
“We’ll talk about this later?” He asks as he gets off of Y/N’s bed and makes his way out of her room.
“Just talk?” Y/N asks with a coy smile as she follows after the soldier. Bucky shakes his head, his lips tilted up in a small smile.
“Not if I have any say about it, doll.”
The debrief for the mission happens once everyone is suited up and in the quinjet. Steve stands in the middle of the floor, hands crossed over his chest and he stares at his team.
“I know this is a surprise mission, but we couldn’t wait on this. A Hydra base was just discovered along the Russian and Ukranian border. We believe they have a large group of civilians,” Steve paused, his head lowering for a moment as a sigh left his lips, “children, about twenty of them. We believe they’ve been taken for experimentation.” Everyone’s breath caught in their throats at Steve’s words, their eyes wide with equal parts shock and disgust.
“That’s fucked up.” Sam breathed from where he sat. Everyone nodded their heads and Steve for once didn’t bother correcting the man on his foul language.
Bucky had lost some of his colour at Steve’s words, his mind working at an anxious speed as he thought about all the horrors he went through at Hydra and how those horrors were now being reigned down upon innocent children. Y/N slipped her hand into Bucky’s own from where she sat to his left, her fingers tracing the metal plates in a soothing manner as she saw the man’s panic and anxiety. No one else seemed to notice the shared touch between Bucky and Y/N and the two were all the more thankful for it.
“We’re going in teams of two to search the base and take out anyone you come across. Once the agents are all down only then do you get the kids out and on this jet and Tony’s.” Everyone nodded along but remained silent, the air thick with tension. “Nat and I are going to take the East side, Sam and Tony in the sky, Y/N and Bucky take West.” Again the jet remained silent.
Landing at the base came all too soon for Bucky, but the soldier put aside his worries in order to focus on the mission. Y/N could see the wall come up in his mind as they stepped off the jet, protecting him from whatever horrors he might see inside, whatever memories it might drudge up. They shared a look, brief and silent yet it held so much weight, so many unspoken words between them and they knew... if they stuck together, they’d make it out on the other side of this mission.
It didn’t take long upon entering the base for the team to realize how out-manned they were. Hydra agents filled the underground halls, taking up every empty space available.
Shoot, kick, doge, punch, grab, shoot, dodge. It truly was like the sea monster Hydra took its name after, with each agent Y/N and Bucky took down two more took their place.
Sweat dripped down Y/N’s face, dripping into her mouth the acid like taste took over the iron tang from her bloody lip. She didn’t know how long the fight had been going on for but with the heavy exhaustion weighing her down she knew it’d been a while. Bucky fought at her side, his metal fist gleaming in the light like a freshly sharpened blade. Each hit with it took down another against and still more were coming at them.
“We need to retreat,” Steve’s voice came through Y/N’s comms system. The shifter had only had eyes on the Captain for a short second at landing before she’d lost sight of him and Nat in the throng of Hydra agents. “Everyone get back on the jet, now.” He ordered. Neither Bucky nor Y/N wasted any time upon hearing Steve’s order. Both agents turned and with loaded guns and fists flying, made their way out of the base and back to the jet.
They were the last to arrive, injured and panting the jet door closed after them just in time before the bullets began hitting the jet. It was almost comical, the small pings that sounded as the bullets hit the exterior of the jet. One after another like gravol hitting a car as it drove along a dirt road the bullets hit them. Tony was on this jet rather than the other, allowing the computer system to fly it rather his own hands he opted for the jet that housed the rest of his team.
“Tony get us out of here!” Sam growled out.
“I can’t.” Tony breathed out.
“What do you mean, I can’t?” Sam fired back.
It was then that everything went silent. The pinging of bullets coming to a sudden halt, the only sound in the jet to be heard was the team’s heavy breathing. It was almost peaceful, save for the threat that hung about them like a guillotine blade. Y/N stepped closer to Bucky, the soldier doing the same. He was just reaching out to her when a thickly accented male voice spoke through the jets speakers.
“Good day, Avengers,” the man’s voice came out like a purr, as though the team was a mistress he’d had the pleasure of seducing, “we’ve taken over your ship, but of course, you’ve already come to realize this by now. You know what we want. Give us the Winter Soldier.” Slowly, all eyes turned to Bucky. The soldier hung his head low, knowing that with the situation they were in they had no other option but to follow Hydra’s orders. However, it seemed Steve had known exactly what Bucky was thinking, for he shook his head, his stare locked on his friend.
“You’re not handing yourself over Bucky.” The soldier looked up, his own head shaking, a silent disagreement with the Captain. “Bucky-” Steve started before he was cut off by the thickly accented voice coming through the jets speakers again.
“If being stranded here isn’t enough incentive to hand over the Winter Soldier then perhaps I might sweeten the pot.” Chills crawled up Y/N’s spine, her sweat and blood suddenly chilling on her skin at the man’s threat.
Tony was the first to see it as he stood at the front of the jet. It was his choked off gasp that caught the others attention, bringing them all forward until they were all looking out of the jets glass shield.
“No,” Bucky gasped, his breath catching in his throat as he stared forward. He was shaking, trembling at the sight before him. They were all shaking.
Walking into the open field before them was a line of agents, each with a gun in one hand and a struggling child in another. They stopped in a long line before the jet and the Avengers were left facing all twenty children, each with tears pouring down their cheeks and a gun to their heads.
“You know what we want,” the man spoke again to the team though he directed his next words to the soldier and only the soldier, “you can make this end, Soldat. Just come with us and the others can leave, no violence, no bloodshed. You can even have the kids.” He purred. “Don’t and well…” the man paused and Bucky sucked in a rattling breath, “...these kids’ blood will be on your hands and your hands alone, Soldat. You have thirty seconds to step out of the jet before we start killing.” Y/N looked over to Bucky, who’s hands shook at his sides, his head bent forward as he stared at the jet’s dark floor, away from the childrens crying forms.
Y/N knew what he was going to do, she knew the soldier would sacrifice himself in order to keep these children and his team safe. It’s what they all would have done. It’s what Y/N would have done, and so, it’s what she did do.
“Sit down, Bucky.” She spoke softly as Bucky went to the back of the jet, his hand reaching for the button that would lower the door for him to step out. Bucky shook his head as he stood before her, taking a step closer to Y/N as she shook her head at him.
“Y/N, this is our only option, they want me. I have to go.”
“I know,” Y/N answered, her hands coming to rest on Bucky’s biceps, “they want the Winter Soldier, and they’ll get the Winter Soldier. But they aren’t getting you.” Bucky’s head tilted to the side in question, not understanding the woman’s words until suddenly it hit him head on. He’s eyes grew wide in horror as he stepped towards her, his hands grasping onto her own.
“Y/N, no, you can’t.” Y/N gave a soft smile back as she looked at Bucky, her eyes roaming over him, her hands reaching for his face in order to trace the lines of his skin, building up the memory of him in her mind.
She prayed that the memory of him would be enough to keep her warm at night until the end of her time.
“I hurt you in Hydra,” she began. Tears welled up behind her eyes as she looked at Bucky. “I hurt you and there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t regret that. There’s days that I wish I’d never met you, that I think how better off you’d be without me in your life,” Bucky shook his head frantically at the woman’s words, tears of his own spilling down his cheeks just like Y/N’s, “but I’ve come to realize that this was all meant to be, that we were meant to be,” Y/N stepped further into Bucky, forcing him to take a step back, and another and another until he was pressed against the jets wall, “you’ve done your time, Bucky. You’ve fought your battles and you’ve come out the other side,” Y/N’s hands slipped down from Bucky’s face, her hands reaching for his own, “it’s my time to go to battle now Bucky, for us.” Y/N pressed her lips to Bucky’s in a desperate kiss. Tears slipped down their cheeks as they shared a last moment of love. Their first kiss, and their last.
It was when Y/N had pulled away from their kiss, that Bucky realized what the woman had done.
The snap of the cuffs around his wrists and the metal beam along the jet’s wall rang out in the silence between them. And as Y/N stepped back Bucky was filled with a nauseating horror. He shook his head, pulling at the cuffs that held him he looked to the shifter, his gaze pleading with her to let him go.
She didn’t. She looked to the team, a last goodbye in her gaze.
“Take care of each other.” Bucky shook his head, small please and no’s spilling from his lips, all intertwined with her name.
“Y/N, please, don’t do this, please…”
“I love you Bucky.” Y/N’s said softly. It was her final goodbye before she shifted and Bucky was left staring at a carbon copy of himself.
“Y/N, please, don’t…” he begged. But it was too late.
With the press of a button Y/N stepped off the quinjet and handed herself over to Hydra.
Chapter Twenty Six: The One With the Letters
Warnings: N/A
Word Count: 3851
    Never once in Lily's life did she ever believe she would find herself fretting the life of Bucky Barnes in a personal way. Not the type of way that would have her up for a week straight all night. Not the type of way that would have her going on jogs just to stop thinking about it. Not the type of way that would have her son clinging to her in fear that he wouldn't come home. He had become a staple in her life, and not having any contact with him for a week straight, and having no idea where in the world he is, was one of the hardest things she had to endure. At least, that's how she had felt in the moment.
Mere days ago, she had sat in her bed with his arms tightly wrapped around her. Keeping her safe and warm, hiding away her vulnerable state from the darkest of evils in the world. It scared her just how much he had come to mean to her, and just how much Hunter had become attached to him. The father figure the boy had lacked all of those years with Scott being a mere phantom in his life.
However, as much as Lily would prefer nothing more than to curl up deep underneath the goosedown covers and silk sheets of the Avengers Compound, life went on. Her life didn't cease to continue or stop. She had a son to take care of and a dog to feed, and a very pregnant sister to keep from losing her ever loving mind. But she also had work. The hospital had her filing reports as a 'work from home' assignment, and finishing up any medical journals and analysis she had to do. She was on call for an emergency, and was counting down the minutes before she would be brought back.
So, as Lily sat at the desk in the small office the Avengers had offered her, typing up examinations, her mind went numb. All she thought about was the clicking of her fingers and the gentle breathing of Joey coming from beside her. Hunter was doing his homework in his own room, giving Lily some peace and quiet to get her work done. But she had also come to realize over the past week, the Avengers Compound wasn't exactly the best place to be working.
"I told you that muffin was mine, Natasha!" Clint echoed as the two pairs of footsteps halted out front of Lily's closed door.
"Your name wasn't on it!" Nat retaliated, "And that is a known rule in this place. Unless your name is on it, it's free for the taking!"
And that was at 9 in the morning, and was only the first issue of the day.
"You have no regard for the finer things in life." Tony scoffed as he and Bruce also stopped in front of her door.
"No, I just have a sense of money." He retorted, only egging Tony on.
Glancing down at her clock, Lily let out an audible groan. It was only 9:30, a mere half an hour after Natasha and Clint had let their argument go public. But Lily continued on, making sure to pop in her earphones for the virtual conversation she had to do. Some of her patients had set up the online appointments while Lily was away from her physical workplace, and she was thankful. But it was also harder for her to give accurate diagnosis with it, which resulted in a bit more work on her own end. When 11 struck, Lily turned on her computer camera and readied herself for the consultation.
"Hi Olivia!" Lily beamed and waved as the young girl and her mother popped up on the screen, "How are you today hun?"
"Not good, Dr. Osborne." The seven year old sighed, scratching at her chest. A rash that had burdened the young girl for the past week while they waited for Lily to see them.
"Oh no! Well, that's alright, cause I'll make sure to get it all sorted out for you. Why don't you tell me what's been going on. When did the rash show up?" She asked, flipping over her file for the young curly haired girl.
Just as Olivia went to speak, the door to the office burst open and slammed against the wall. Joey's head shot up and Lily flinched at the noise, turning slightly in her chair to see what the large noise was about. Pursing her lips, Lily lowered her eyes at the two tall men that stood in the doorway. One being broad with that signature American charm, and the other holding a Godly presence that was hard to deny. Steve and Thor glanced warily at each other as Lily raised her eyebrows, giving that signature mom stare.
"Lady Osborne, forgive us," Thor began, "but do you mind if we ask you a small question?"
Lowering her eyes, Lily tilted her head, "Can it wait?" She said through gritted teeth, nodding towards the computer where two dumbstruck patients sat on the other in, taking in the fact that two Avengers were in the same room as their doctor. Both men looked down at her with a clearly guilty tinge to their bright blue eyes, but she also knew they wouldn't give up.
"Well it's just quick." Steve pushed, shifting on his feet.
Lowering her eyes, she sent a quick apologetic look to her patients before turning to the two superheroes, "Out with it then." She sighed, crossing her legs and resting her hands on her lap.
"Which one of us has bluer eyes?"
"Alright get out." Lily snapped, shooing the two and turning her attention back to the young girl she was helping.
-----
Letting her hair down from the clip clamped on the back of her head, Lily logged off of her computer. She leaned her head back and shook out the stiff tresses that had been pulled back the whole day. Her fingers were cramped and shoulders stiff, leaving her uncomfortable in the chair she sat. Standing to her feet, the blonde slid off her white lab coat and dusted off the lace white dress she wore and readjusting the yellow cardigan. Patting her leg, Joey hopped to his feet and followed the woman out into the halls of the continuously noise hallway of the Avengers compound.
"The kid can cook better than you, Clint." Wanda chirped, earning a snicker from the other Avengers as Lily walked into the kitchen where everyone sat around on couches.
"Who taught you how to cook like that, buddy?" Tony asked, glancing over at the kitchen where Rose and Hunter bustled around.
"Not my mom." The twelve year old commented cooly, not even bothering to send a second glance Lily's way as everyone acknowledged her presence in the room.
"That's true," Lily laughed, walking forward with her arms crossed over her chest, "I handle breakfast. But it was actually Bucky that taught Hunter how to handle the kitchen. With the help of Rose, of course." She shrugged, taking a seat in an armchair across from Wanda and Vision.
"Cyborg can cook?" Tony scoffed, as though he didn't believe it.
"He can. He used to cook for his sister back in the day when his parents weren't around," Steve responded, "But I never knew he continued doing it. Figured he'd just relied solely on take out most days."
Light conversation continued over dinner after the two other Osborne's served everyone. Jokes about the interruptions Lily endured earlier throughout the day by the various superheroes seated around her. Or about how Thor and Steve both had very beautiful blue eyes. But the latter's eyes seemed stuck to Lily throughout the dinner. Not in a flirtatious way, oh no, but in a way that was almost pity. He knew Lily didn't really want to be there, and would have rather been at home with her son and sister. But there was a certain remorse as well that clouded his vision, one that sent a shiver down Lily's back. It worried her what could be on the supersoldier's mind. A feeling of anxiety had settled itself into the blonde's stomach as dinner finished and Steve lingered by the door while Lily helped clear the table.
"Hey, Lily, mind if I talk to you for a minute?" Steve finally piped up, catching the blonde's attention as she handed Natasha the final plate.
Nodding her head, Lily excused herself and walked over to the Captain, wiping her hands off on a towel before joining him on the other side of the living room. His hands were stuffed deep into his pockets and Lily grew even more wary of his actions. Steve's eyes kept dancing down towards the floor and sending more anxiety rushing through her. She knew that if Bucky were to contact anyone, it would be Steve or her. And with a mission, she knew Steve outranked her. She didn't mind, not one bit. But if there was something that had gone wrong, she would have preferred if he was outright with it.
"Bucky said that if we don't hear from him or Sam for a week," The blonde had begun, causing a small sweat to form on Lily's brow, "He wanted me to take you to his apartment and grab something. He never really kept valuables here when he stayed at the compound so..."
Lily swallowed the lump in her throat and tried to blink away the tears that gathered in her waterline, "D-Do you think something happened to them?"
Steve finally met her gaze and pursed his lips, contradicting the words that left his mouth, "No. No they're just fine. Bucky and Sam have gone on much more complicated missions than this. They're okay Lily."
Deciding to test the man, Lily sniffled and spoke, "Promise?
Instead of answering, Steve handed the mother her coat and nodded towards the front door of the compound.
-----
The entire ride down to Brooklyn was that of silence and awkward glances from the supersoldier to the young single mother who looked as though a murder were going to take place. She knew Steve wouldn't give her any answers, maybe it was because he didn't have any, or it could be because he didn't want to. She wasn't entirely sure. All that Lily knew, was that she was pissed off at the entirety of the situation. Whether it be her parents' ignorant mistakes, Bucky being someone she didn't know, or the fact her entire family was in danger because of her parents. The entire situation was one Lily never would have dreamed up for herself in a million years, and sometimes she pinched herself in effort to wake up from the nightmare.
"We're here." Steve stated grimly as the two came to a stop in front of a slightly rundown building.
Without a word, Lily stepped from the car and pulled out her keys. The one she needed dangled apart from the others, as though it knew that it was about to be used. Bucky had given her a key to his apartment back in January, deciding that if he could get into her place, it was only right to give her the same luxury. They never spent much time in his apartment, seeing as he enjoyed being at her place more. But every so often, when Gen and Rose were watching Hunter and Bucky and Lily went for dinner, they'd stay the night in the small apartment and enjoy the company of one another.
Steve followed Lily as she buzzed in, speaking directly to the landlord who let her in without a second thought. The two mounted the creaking stairs up to the third level where Bucky's apartment sat. Right next door was a lovely elderly woman who would always bring Lily cookies whenever she heard that the blonde was over. And on the other side was one of Lily's patients actually. A single father raising twin girls, Nina and Hallie. And right between the two, was the small but modest apartment of Bucky Barnes.
Unlocking the door, Lily pushed her way in. The familiar scent of Bucky wafted into her nose and she placed a hand on her throat as though she were choking on it. Steve shuffled past her and bent down in front of the television, pulling out a stack of four envelopes wrapped in twine. Lily watched in curiosity as Steve made his way back over, giving her a dry and sympathetic smile before placing the envelopes in her hands.
"I'll go wait in the car, okay?" He whispered, resting a kind hand on her shoulder before walking from the apartment.
Lily slid the stack into her purse and took in the sight around her. On the side table beside the couch, her wine glass from lord knows how long ago sat empty. Shaking her head and muttering about how much of a mess the man was, Lily walked over and picked it up. As she cleaned up a bit, her senses dulled from the scent. She just wanted him close. That musky pine and firewood that intoxicated her whenever it was near. The blonde stepped into his bedroom and further into his closet, pulling out three of his shirts to take with her back to the compound. Would it make her feel better? She wasn't sure. But it didn't stop her from spraying a bit of his cologne onto the three before joining Steve back down in the car.
-----
When the two returned back to the compound, no one said a word to Lily as she rushed past to her bedroom. Rose had tucked Hunter in, and the look on her sister's face set the younger one off to know that now wasn't the time to talk.
Tears threatened to fall as Lily shut the door to the bedroom after Joey had wadded in. Dropping her jacket and purse, Lily changed into pyjama bottoms and one of Bucky's shirts, letting the feeling of the soft cotton warm her chilled skin. That ever addicting scent filled her nose as she took a seat on her bed, pulling the reading glasses she had been prescribed recently onto her nose, and preparing herself for the letters she was about to read.
"September 24th
I'm not sure what prompted me to write this. But I just had a feeling it would come in handy one day.
I kissed a girl yesterday that makes me feel as though everything around me has melted away. I had been telling my therapist about her, but never thought I'd have the strength to do something so bold. I hadn't even expected her to show up at Sam's birthday. She never seemed like the kind of girl to do parties but she came. And I suppose that's all thanks to Thor
The moment I laid eyes on her at that cafe, something lit up inside of my heart. Whether it was her smile, or the way her eyes avoided mine whenever they met. She wasn't scared though. No, she was just nervous. The way she stumbled over her words when Sam spoke to her, him having more courage than I ever could dream of.
And her son, god. God her son is as perfect as they come. A sweet boy, and clearly attached to his mother. Sam warned me that if I got involved in something like this, the kid would always be number one. But I don't care. If it meant bringing Lily something to smile about, and help her forget about that jackass of an ex-husband, I'd do it.
I wish I had taken a photo of her when she walked down the stairs last night. The grace that followed her even as she tried to shrug away the stress of that night. God, I never thought I deserved someone like this in my life. Someone with a touch so soft I feel as though I'm the one that would break. But she doesn't seem afraid of me.
And I'll do anything it takes to ensure she never is."
Lily let out the breath that clung to her throat as though it was scared to be released. Pressing the first note to her chest, Lily let a few tears slip past her bottom lashes, streaking down her flushed cheeks. Placing it to the side, she pushed on. Opening the second envelope, Lily knew that these would only get harder to read as she went on.
"November 8th
I never thought someone would see me as loveable. Or a father figure at that. Always thought I'd be reduced down to a pity date or someone people just wanted to learn about. But when she looked up at me with those bright eyes, I knew that she cared. She wanted to know every story, and learn every secret that I have.
Watching her with Hunter is always the highlight of my day. The way her eyes get brighter and her smile grows wider. Lily is truly one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen, but there's just something to her that furthers that beauty when she's with her son. He had been a part of something that caused her more pain than she should have had to endure, but yet, she has no resentment. Not a shred of doubt that she was doing a good job. It's something I want someday, a family. Away from the fighting and the constant running.
And the way Hunter looked at me, not only asking Lily for permission, but asking me as well...it's all I could have ever wanted. I knew at that moment that Hunter would be the son that wasn't mine. But one that I love and care for nonetheless.
She's truly a wish come true for me. The nights I spend without her are hard. Whenever I have nightmares, she's there. Running gentle fingers down my face and ensuring I know that it's okay. And I believe her. I believe her with every ounce of me."
Lily was now full on waterworks. Her tears fell like a stream down her face as she reread the words he had written no one. The ones that he had said to himself in the privacy of his own home. She ran her thumb over the slight stain of a tear that she had made, an exact parallel of the older one on the opposite side. His. Pressing the paper to her forehead, Lily took a deep breath before opening the third one.
"December 24th
I doubt I'll get out of this one. She's gonna kill me and I know it. I made her a promise. Told her that I would be home for Christmas Eve. But here I sit, on a jet with wounds littering my body from people who I never thought would be a problem that would cause this much effort.
Not sure if I'm more scared of them, or the wrath of Lily that I was about to face when the plane landed.
I've never seen her genuinely angry. I've seen her frustrated, anxious, annoyed, and everything in between. But never angry. I had to wonder if that had anything to do with Scott. Maybe his anger all those years forced her to keep her own in check. Maybe just like I'm sometimes scared of myself, she's scared of herself.
I miss her eyes the most. The way they stared up at me. Or crinkled when she laughed and smiled. Or how they rolled whenever I made a stupid remark. Everything about her eyes. The darker spots of brown that littered the green around them, creating a hazel that I fell head over heels for.
I'll be home soon, darling. I promise."
A choked sob ripped from Lily's throat as she gripped the letter with tight fingers. She wanted nothing more than to just hold him. Keep him in her arms forever. Keep him from the horrors of the world just as she did him. She just wanted him to be home. With her, with Hunter. Anything. She didn't care what it took. She would stand up to her parents herself if it meant having him and Sam home safe. However, she still had one letter to go through. One she dreaded reading just from looking at the date.
"February 23rd
I have to leave her today. I don't know if I'll ever see her again. Those bright eyes, that crooked smile. The blush that rose to her cheeks when I stared too long. The nose scrunch she made whenever I flicked it when she made dumb comments. This could be a final ride for me. The danger is something I promised to keep her away from. But I failed.
I failed miserably.
But they want something they can't have. They want my family. And I'll be damned before they lay their hands on them. The selfish part of me wished Steve would go instead, but this was my fight. I just wished I could hold her longer. Kiss her once more. Feel her hands on me once more.
She's asleep right now. Unaware of the true dangers that lay out in the world. The pain that they want to cause her. I hate myself for my job. Hate that I let her get this close. To create that attachment. I've become too close to her heart and her family. Hunter...I can't even think about him without tears filling my eyes. The pain I've caused him, I can't forgive myself for that. Not now, not in ten years, not ever.
I could slip away in the night. Leave early and handle the mission on my own. Even though it was essentially suicide without a partner. But I'm willing to give myself up if it meant she was safe. Tucked away in my little corner of the universe. But who am I kidding? She may be timid but that fire inside of her is lighting and I know that not much stands in her way.
I loathe myself for letting her fall for me as I did her. For falling for me in a way that can't be undone, only by death. And that may be the case. I may never see her again. And I know that it's selfish but I think that would be better. For her to move on with her life and pretend I never existed. That what was between us wasn't anything too important. Hunter would move on, she would cope. And that's all I want. Her happiness.
Lily if you're reading this, it means that thing's aren't looking good. And if these are the last words you hear from me, I'm sorry. I knew I was too dangerous for you and you don't deserve that. But just know that truly, deeply, I care for you and Hunter more than these three words can describe:
I love you."
A knock at the window caused her breathing to cease.
So, he really doesn't have time to date the billionaire that flirts with him everyday as he buys his cup of coffee. Even if he did, he can't let himself fall for the man. Because if he knew that he lived from a backpack and showered in a public bathroom there's no way he'd still want him...right?
“Right,” he said. “Don’t stop. I gotcha.” He leaned forward, his knee pushing Tony’s armor-covered leg out wider, bending his knee against the wall, and his hand came up, leather-covered palm pushing at the back of Tony’s neck, over the metal edge of the neckpiece, against the soft skin just under his hair, and squeezed, holding him down. “I’m going to make you take it, buster,” he murmured, and his voice, his breath, was soft against Tony’s skin, warm against his hair. “I’m going to hold you down, right here, Shellhead, and push into you, and have you. You want that, fella? You like that?”
mayhem dressed in a suit by StarSpangledBucky (PWP/7K)
Tony openly blurts out about his sex life with Steve during a press conference. Steve isn't happy as he watches it live on TV. His anger results in Steve driving to the venue, where he follows Tony into the bathroom and fucks him stupid. Tony doesn't complain, because angry Steve is the kinkiest thing Tony has ever dealt with. And by the next day, Steve gets payback by making Tony cry on camera.
Steve keeps seeing finger-shaped bruises on Tony's face. He isn't sure what it says about him that he wants to be the one to put them there.
***more complicated than a smash and grab by iam93percentstardust (Oceans 11 AU/72K)
Steve Rogers wouldn't describe himself as an honest man. A good man? Well, that depends on who you're talking to. But an honest one? Never.
Three years after Steve is framed for a crime he didn't commit, he returns to the international thieves community to find that it's been decimated by the same man who framed him. Furious and thirsting for revenge, he starts putting together a team to help him ruin the man who ruined their lives. But if he's going to run the biggest con in the Western Hemisphere, he's going to need help from his ex-partner. The only problem is, Tony used to be more than just his partner and the last time they spoke had been in an explosive fight just before Steve was arrested.
With the stakes higher than they've ever been before, will Steve convince Tony to forgive him in time to run the perfect con? Or will he shatter Steve's heart and walk away again?
***lord, what fools these mortals be by iam93percentstardust (Actor AU/72K)
Famed director Phil Coulson brings Shakespeare’s beloved play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, to Broadway. This production though comes with a twist: a brief but passionate love affair between the faerie king, Oberon, and his attendant, Puck. In the roles of the two star-crossed lovers, Coulson casts America’s darling Steve Rogers, fresh off his third Academy Award, and Broadway royalty, Tony Stark. Steve quickly finds himself falling for the quick-witted and sarcastic actor but Tony is dating the stage manager. Unwilling to come between the seemingly happy couple, Steve steps back but all isn’t right behind the scenes and Tony may need him when everything falls apart.
3 with shake off your blues boy?
cracks knuckles.
I'd direct the big key scene where Steve sacrifices his Captain America body for Natasha, is the thing! I'd put unconscious Red Skull kind of comically knocked out, over there, with a broken nose. front and center tho, are Gamora and Steve: Steve is pacing wildly, trying to figure out how to get Natasha back too, Gamora is sitting down so she can recover from the shock of coming back - I'll tell the actress, pretend you're waking up from a long sleep and your limbs feel a little funny bc you haven't moved them in a bit. this is not a somber scene, this is a serious scene like in TWS where Steve looks at a hundred-foot drop through glass and is just like, yeah, this is gonna suck, but I'm gonna do it anyway, so the mood is determined but worried. there is a chance this will not work.
obviously if I was directing this I would also have completely rewritten Steve's Endgame arc. I would've, from the start, placed equal focus on Bucky's dog tags and Peggy's picture in the compass, with a dash more focus on the people Steve has lost - make him not the therapist for the support group, but instead the person speaking about trying to go on a date with a nice fellow and then stopping and trying to hold it back. (I would also have had him snap at Tony that he left him a fucking phone and he could've called, at any point, and Steve would've come.) he has not moved on! he refuses to! it feels like he's given up on them! and part of that is the fact that he hasn't moved on from Peggy either, not totally.
then - he has hope, and he considers going back to the past and staying there. you see him watching Peggy, almost putting his hand on the door to say hello. and then you see Peggy's husband, a brunette with a quicksilver smile, come inside, and say hello, and they talk about their kids, and they laugh. they're in love. Peggy's office has pictures of her family. Peggy has lived her life, and Steve - Steve is realizing, perhaps for the first time, that he should live his. he kisses the compass one last time. "goodbye, Peggy." puts the compass on the drawer. back to the heist.
back to my fic and how I'd direct it. put focus now on Steve's dog tags, the way he looks at them with love. he tucks them into his shirt - he's not letting them go. he won't sacrifice Gamora either. have him pace, talking with Gamora, and a beat after he says "but it would be so satisfying" about tossing Schmidt off the cliff, he stops. here I'd tell the actor this: you are not considering killing yourself. you are considering killing the best, most powerful version of yourself, to save your friend. remember, you used to be sick, you were scrawny and color-blind, people would not listen to you, you could not stop bullies. in this body, you are strong, you can afford to be brave, you can stop bullies from hurting other people.
now think about your friend. this is the woman who has stuck by you, who helped you find Bucky, who hugged you when Peggy died. she once told you that she wanted to watch the Maltese Falcon. a week ago you guys had plans to watch a noir film festival. once you fell asleep on her while you were watching Citizen Kane, and when you woke up you were under a blanket, and a cup of cocoa, long cold, was sitting on the table. you trust her, you love her, she's one of your best and closest friends. there is no question: she is worth the sacrifice.
the gravity of this scene is sold through the face. Steve's face goes from fear and doubt, to pain (because he loves this body, he really does, he could do so much in this body that he couldn't before), to resignation, to grim determination. then he gives Gamora his shield, and takes off his dog tags - focus on them once more, the way his fingers linger over them one last time before letting go. he isn't planning to die, does not want to, but that's a real possibility here.
have Gamora reaching for him, trying to yank him back, but he's already gone. she has no weapons, she can't do like Clint and Nat and stop him, and she does not know Nat. her sacrifice wouldn't count. Steve's would.
when he dives, play flashbacks. brief images flash onto the screen like yellowed film - Coney Island, Bucky, the beaches of Normandy, the shield flying through the air, Dr. Erskine pouring schnapps. flash cut to Steve closing his eyes before he hits the ground.
have the ground suddenly break like ice, with cold water below. the Soul Stone has a voice - it sounds like Erskine, like Ma, like the Commandos. the voice shifts from line to line. the scene briefly turns terrifying, as hands reach from the depths to grab hold of Steve's ankles and drag him down as he instinctively kicks toward the surface. then the voice tells him that it's original thinking, and that it will honor the deal he's made.
just before Steve blacks out, a hand reaches for him, wrist encircled with Widow Stings. he passes out, then wakes up on the ground, skinny again, and Natasha is alive in front of him.
(post-credits scene: Natasha goes to see Yelena. she whistles a long note. waits ten seconds, then Yelena whistles back, and all but slams into her to hug her.)
Tumblr media
That was hands down the worst date that either you, or Steve, had ever been on, in your entire separate lives. And that was saying a lot, considering Steve was just over 100 years old, and you weren’t exactly a spry young chicken yourself. At least when it came to the dating world, you weren’t.
So why, exactly, was this date such a colossal disaster, you ask? Oh, well, let us show you it in its entirety, from start to finish. Then you’ll understand exactly why, and when, it all went to hell in a handbag.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Readers POV
Tonight’s the night. After 5 days of intense mood swings, calling your friends crying and begging for pep talks, hardly getting any tasks done at work, issues with sleeping, and a few very large glasses of wine—read, just the straight bottle. No glasses were used, because we aren’t about that life here— It’s finally Friday night AKA your date night with Steve. And—oh fuck, nope, no, nu uh. You can’t do this. You just can’t!
You flop down onto the ridiculous pile of clothes that is now your bedroom floor and try to bury yourself within it. You can’t do this. You really can’t. So instead, you will just burrow into these clothes and they will become your home now. Lindsey and Tyler can drop off food once a week to sustain you, and if you get an extension cord, you could totally rig up your laptop in here.
Note to self: regardless of if you stay buried in these clothes or not, you really do need to get an extension cord. They are honestly useful as fuck.
But back to the main issue at hand here, which was agreeing to this ridiculous date. That was a horrible idea! Honestly, what were you even thinking?! You know you don’t take stress well, that you overthink and panic over even the smallest of upsets, but shit—wait, where was I going with this again? OH! Right! Who do you even think you are? Going on a damn date with thee Steve Rogers! The most gentlemanly, gentleman that ever gentlemaned! Shit!
And then there is you, a washed up journalist with hair that never cooperates, pores the size of Russia, and—you swear that—you walk with a limp, because you are positive that one leg is just slightly shorter than the other. You swear it! On your damn life!
Okay, so maaaaaybe you are overreaching here just a tad, again. But the point still stands. You aren’t special, or a superhero, or ya know, God's gift to the world. You are just you. Y/N Y/L/N. So how is it that you scored a date with thee sweetest, most down to earth, most handsome guy out there? Damn. Maybe good Karma really is a thing?—No, no. You shake your head, vehemently. Because in that case, you would have ended up getting shit on by a bird or something, instead of going on a date with Steve..
Alright, it’s decided. You aren’t going on this date. You don’t deserve to go on this date. You’ll just pick up your phone and call—no! Text! Facing him...err, ya know, what your voice? Shit, doesn’t matter, what does though is the fact that you having to cancel over the phone would just be way too hard, and far too heartbreaking. A text is super impersonal, but much easier. And—hey! Don’t judge us! We never claimed to be courageous! We are basically the damn cowardly lion in human form over here. So come to terms with that. Own it. It’s a part of who we are now.
You groan, moving your arms around languidly over the insane pile of clothes beneath you, in search of your cellular communication device. The movement reminds you of making snow angels as a kid, so just for good measure you move your legs as well, and allow the random procrastinating train of thought to continue on for a few more minutes. Hoping it will calm your nerves even a little.
It obviously doesn’t, but it does cause you to giggle, and locate your phone, so that’s a win, you guess. You pick the phone up and bring it to above your face, your eyes instantly widening when you realize the time. 5:46pm. Shit! Steve is supposed to be here at 6! There is no way you can text and cancel now! You’re willing to bet he’ll be here at exactly 6, and he is probably driving as we speak, therefore he won’t even get your text till he is outside your apartment. And shit, cancelling at this point is just fucking mean. You have to go on this date now, you have no choice.
You groan loudly again as you barrel roll off the pile of clothes and awkwardly climb to your feet, heading over to the mirror to take a second look at the 15th outfit you’ve tried on tonight. But before you can give it a thorough re-looking over, your phone rings abruptly and you jump, almost chucking it across the room. Man, you are clearly far too jumpy tonight, and you always have this weird desperate need to involuntarily destroy your phone. Like what even is that? Your phone continues to ring, and you quickly answer it, not even checking who is calling. “H-hello?”
“Breathe. What are you wearing?”
Lindsey, it’s Lindsey. You glance down, “dark wash jeans, a black sheer blouse, and my black ankle boot heels.” You freeze, realization and then irrational fear taking hold, as you stare back at yourself in the mirror. “Oh shit, do you think I’m too underdressed? Oh crap! I am, aren’t I? I should have worn a dress! He’s from the damn 30’s! Oh fu—“
“Woman!” Lindsey cuts you off, “just breathe, babe, damn. You are overthinking this whole thing way too much. Your outfit is perfect, I bet you look like a freaking fox right now, and I know for a fact you will blow Steve away. So just simmer your shit a little, okay?”
You nod slowly to your reflection, realizing Lindsey can’t see the action you quickly mumble. “Yeah. Yeah, you’re right. I’ll be okay, I look fine, I’m fine. I’m breathing now. Promise.”
“Very convincing,” Lindsey snarks and you can damn near hear her rolling her eyes at you.
You are about to snark back at her, but a few light knocks on your door halt the words in your throat. Shiiiiit! He’s here!
“Fuck! Linds!” You hiss. “He’s here! What do I do?!”
“Jesus,” she sighs, exasperated, “you get off the phone and answer the door! And then have a wonderful fucking night. It’s that simple.”
“Okay. Okay. You’re right, again, it sounds simple enough. I got this.” Yet the words don’t sound convincing at all. At least not to your ears.
“You do,” she reaffirms. “Now repeat after me, I look great. I will rock this damn date. I will blow him away with my looks and my interesting and funny conversation topics. Because I got this shit on lock.”
“Yes, I second everything you just said. But I have to go! Bye!” You pulled the phone from your ear and are just about to hang up, when you hear.
“Wait!!” Ring from the phone's speaker, and you halt from hanging up, putting the phone back to your ear.
“Yes?” You question in a rushed manner, needing to get off the phone so you can answer the door and not leave Steve Rogers standing idly in your hallway for all your neighbours to see.
“Call me as soon as the date ends!! Or there will be hell to pay!” She warns. “I want all the dirty details, so don’t forget a damn thing! And most of all, have fuuuuun!” She singsongs the last part.
“Will do! Bye!” You hang up quickly before she can say anything else. Was that rude? Probably. Do you care at the moment? Not in the slightest. You’ll make it up to her later.
You rush from your room, closing the door behind you so he can’t catch even a small glimpse of the chaos that has become your bedroom floor. Then you make your way to your front door, pulling on your heel booties and grabbing your jacket from the back of your dining room chair before pulling it on as well. With one last look at yourself in your entryway mirror, you pull open your door and your heart damn near leaps from your chest at just the sight of him alone.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Steve's POV
Finding her address took way less time than he thought it would, and once he parks he realizes just how early he is. He couldn’t go up yet, could he? No, no, arriving too early is ‘bad form’, as Sam had put it, and ‘makes you look too eager,’ as Bucky had added. Both men were not being overly helpful, at all. But then Nat had piped up, and said to ignore both guys, and the true reason you don’t want to show up too early is because she probably won’t be ready, and it’s never good to rush a woman’s pre-date prepping process. So after Nat’s words of wisdom replay in his mind, he decides to wait it out, and head up closer to 6. Not wanting to rush you in any way, shape, or form.
But the second the clock clicks to 5:55, he is out of the car and halfway to your apartment's front door. He is just about to buzz your number, when another resident exits the door and sees him standing there. The residents eyes widen comically upon realization that Captain America is currently standing outside their apartment, and with a few stuttered words of praise and thanks, the resident steps aside, still holding the door, and allows Steve access to the apartments lobby.
With a sincere and rushed ‘Thank you’, Steve makes his way into the building and up to the 4rd floor to your apartment door. He glances down at his watch and sees that it’s now 5:59, right on time, he thinks. He quickly pats down his clothes, trying to smooth them out and eradicate the wrinkles from sitting in the car for so long. And just as the clock ticks over to 6:00, he takes a deep breath, and raises his hand, knocking loudly on the fake wood door.
His super soldier ears pick up the shuffled sounds of movement and the murmur of a soft voice through the door. Though he can’t make out the words, and yes, if he focused himself he probably could, but your privacy is still important to him. Even though he’s sort of taken it away from you once or twice in the past. Be it by looking at Tony’s file on you, or constantly creeping your social media accounts. Granted, social media is you putting it out there to the world, so it’s not exactly a breach of privacy. But yet, it still made Steve feel weird and creepy for doing it, so that sort of counts, at least in his mind it does—
The door abruptly opening cuts off Steve’s train of thought, and then the sight now before him causes his mind to just blank. With no hopes in it recovering anytime soon, because you are breathtaking. More beautiful than the last time he saw you, and that’s saying something because he was almost rendered speechless the first time. And this time, he is.
How the hell is he going to make it through this night, if he can’t even say a word from just the sight of you, alone?! Oh hell, he’s doomed.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Readers POV
A silent moment goes by, neither one of you uttering so much as a syllable. Just both standing there, staring at each other and speechless. Finally you find your voice and drag it back from its hiding place. “Uh, hi,” you wave awkwardly—And woooow, clearly you only dragged a part of it back. And also, a freaking wave?!? What are you, 12? You’d facepalm right now, if it weren’t for the tall blonde standing directly in front of you currently.
Steve gives you a shy smile, and an awkward wave in return, “Hi.”
Okay, so at least you aren’t the only awkward one. That’s good, you guess. “Shall we?” You ask, pointing past Steve at the empty hallway.
He nods quickly, “yeah. Yeah, let’s go.” And then he steps out of the doorway to allow you room to exit your apartment. You quickly do, turning to close and lock your door, and then you direct your attention back to the Adonis beside you, as you both begin to walk towards the stairwell door.
A silence looms over you both, you aren’t exactly sure what to say, and it would appear Steve has the same sentiments. You make your way down the stairs and out your apartment buildings front door, and then you freeze. Completely. You gape at the all black car, currently parked on the curb outside your building. “Is that,” you pause, your voice barely coming out above a whisper, so you clear your throat, “is that a Mclaren P1?” You turn to look back at Steve, eyes wide and mouth hanging slightly open.
Tumblr media
He gives you a bashful look, “it is. I’m sorry, I was planning to bring my bike, but then Nat told me you might be wearing a dress, and that even if you weren’t, the helmet would just mess up your hair,” he trails off, glancing at the car and mumbling, “So Tony forced me into taking this ridiculous car.”
You chuckle softly and turn to look back at your dream car, sitting just 25 feet away. “Not ridiculous at all. If I ever won the lottery, that’s the first thing I’d buy,” you gesture to the car and then a cold sweat rips through you, and you quickly look down to inspect your clothes. Or rather, the ass of your jeans.
There is no way in hell you are getting in that car, until you are positive there isn’t a single thing on your jeans that could accidentally be transferred to the seats. You could NEVER afford to replace one of those seats, they are insanely expensive and your measly junior journalist pay would not cut it. You’d be back paying till you were old and grey. No! Longer than that, you’d have to leave your debt owing to Tony Stark in your damn Will. So that your poor children and grandchildren could continue to pay it off after you’re dead and gone. That’s how expensive they are.
A soft chuckle from behind you causes your eyes to flick up and realize that Steve is watching your every move. Including how you just checked your own ass out. Wonderful. Way to go, smart one!
“Ah, shall we?” You ask, yet again, as clearly that’s the only words you have in your repertoire tonight. Some journalist you are. Steve gives you a large grin, and nods, then he places his hand on your lower back and leads you towards your dream car. And if this wasn’t a first date, and that wasn’t Tony Stark's car, you’d have totally asked if you could drive it. But you refrain, this time.
Steve lifts up the passenger door for you,—yes, ‘lifts up’. Butterfly doors are just far too damn cool for words!— like the gentleman he is and you thank him quietly as you slip in. And the second the door is closed, your eyes excitedly bounce around the car's interior, taking in all of it as you may never get a chance to sit in a Mclaren again. And you don’t want to miss or forget a single detail about this damn car.
Steve slips into the driver's seat and clicks in his seatbelt, reminding you that you should probably do the same. So you quickly click yours in as well. Then he turns to you, “you like cars, I take it?”
“Something like that,” you chuckle as he pushes a button to start up the car and it roars to life. Which yeah, that causes your insides to do a little happy dance of excitement at just the sound of this beast alone. “My dad was a mechanic, and an avid supercar enthusiast. So I grew up around cars and at race tracks.”
Steve hums his acknowledgement of your words, as he pulls away from the curb. “I’m more of a bike guy, myself. But I can appreciate a beautiful car.”
You smile at him, happy that you’ve both managed to get over your initial awkwardness and settled on a topic you are comfortable and knowledgeable in. “I like bikes as well, though I’m nowhere near coordinated enough for two wheels, so I stick to four.”
He chuckles, and takes a second to glance over at you before focusing back on the road, “Well, I’ll have to take you out on my bike one day,” he pauses and then quickly adds, “If um, if you’d be interested in that?”
You nod enthusiastically, “I’d really like that.”
You see the hint of a smile form on the side of his lips, “okay. I can make that happen.”
Then what his words actually meant hits you, and you freeze up again. Because, wait, did he just ask you on a second date?! Did he just imply that he already knows he wants a second date? Even before this one has actually started? Shit, what are you supposed to do with that information?! Thank God your frazzled and slightly slow mind hadn’t clued into this until after you’d answered him. Or you could have just ended up not replying at all, and making the poor guy think you didn’t want to see him again. Or that you weren’t enjoying yourself so far. Which couldn’t be further from the truth.
You pull your head out of your ass, and decide to ignore your insecurities and fears, and just talk to Steve. So you start asking him simple questions about himself, nothing too deep, just surface stuff, and as the car ride continues on, you find yourself relaxing more and more.
You both just talk the entire way to the restaurant and before you know it, the car is coming to a stop and Steve is climbing out and handing the valet his keys. He quickly makes his way around to your side and opens up the door before you can even attempt to get it yourself, he offers you a hand and helps you out, and yeah, that makes you swoon a little more. But just a little.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Steve's POV
As he pulls open the restaurant's door for Y/N, and guides her inside, he starts to finally calm down. Thank God his implication of wanting a second date so soon into the first one, hadn’t scared her off. Bucky had told him to play it aloof, leave her wanting more. Sam had told him to be cool, and to think before he spoke. And Nat had told him, once again, to ignore the guys and just be himself. If he wanted to say something to her, to just freaking say it. Be open, and honest, and not some fabricated asshole or casanova. Because that wasn’t him, and girls could usually see right through that shit. So he’d once again decided to go with Nat’s advice, as hers seemed the least scary. And the most realistic.
But when the words had left his mouth, he’d almost groaned and banged his head against the steering wheel. Because who the hell brings up a second date, 5 minutes into the first? That was way too eager of him, to just assume she’d even be interested in the first place. But yet, it had worked out in his favour, because she’d replied instantly, and excitedly, that she’d really like that. So maybe just being himself, and saying what was in his head was the best option after all. It did score him a second date, so clearly this was going well. If he was any judge of things, that is.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Readers POV
Your eyes land on the beautiful young woman standing behind a podium, and the moment her eyes flick up and locked on you both, a large grin forms on her lips. You honestly don’t know what to make of the smile, it’s not exactly one you’d have expected, and you can’t place why it makes you feel so awkward.
It’s odd for sure, but then she speaks and her voice is a polar opposite to her grin. It’s sweet and soft, and calming. “Good evening you two, do you have a reservation? Or just looking for a table?”
“We have a reservation, under Rogers,” Steve answers and you aren’t sure if he is getting the same odd vibes as you are, maybe he is used to people reacting weirdly to his presence. Or maybe, you are just finally going fully crazy, but one glance up at the large blonde, and seeing the slight furrow of his brow, tell you that this isn’t normal, or maybe he is picking up on the same weird vibes that you are. So you aren’t going crazy—at least not this time, you aren’t.
She nods quickly, then picks up two menus and asks you both to follow her. She leads you through the restaurant and to a back corner table. “Here you are,” she says as she places the menus down on the table. “Your waiter will be with you shortly,” she adds, and you are positive that she is trying not to laugh. But you have no idea why. So far, every moment you’ve spent in this restaurant has been so damn weird. But you put that thought out of your mind as she leaves you both alone and scurries off back to her podium.
Steve helps you out of your jacket hanging it on your chair, then he pulls the chair out for you, and you thank him as you sit. He moves to sit across from you, as your eyes flick back over to the woman at the podium, and you notice she is watching you both. Clearly trying to hide that fact, but it’s pretty damn obvious. Once Steve is settled, you snap your eyes back to him, “that was weird, wasn’t it?”
He peers over his shoulder and also glances at the hostess for a second, before turning back to you. “Yeah, that was odd.”
“Does that always happen to you? Do people react to you like that all the time?”
He shakes his head, “sometimes they react, but never like that. That was a first for me.”
You nod, chuckling quietly as you pick up your menu and open it, “okay, so I wasn’t the only one that thought that was weird.”
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Steve's POV
“No,” Steve chuckles as he opens his menu as well. “You weren’t.”
He has never had someone react to his presence like that, he’s had people cry, scream, and laugh uncontrollably. Hell, he’s even had a few people faint, but never has a stranger reacted like that to him before. He isn’t sure what to make of the grin she gave him, it was almost like she was in on something that he wasn’t. And he did not like that thought, not one bit. He pushes the thoughts from his mind, as they both take a few moments to peruse the menus quietly.
A shadow falls over the table and Steve assumes the waiter has arrived, he continues to look over the menu as they place two waters on the table and begin to speak. “Good evening, my name is,” there is a strange pause and then a very awkward sounding, “Will,” is added. “And I’ll be your server tonight. Can I start you both off with something to drink?”
Steve furrows his brows, because he is sure he recognizes that voice. He is 100% positive that he’s heard it many, many times—You have got to be kidding him!? His eyes snap up and lock onto a very familiar set of brown eyes, and then his narrow into a glare. And even with very real looking facial hair, he could spot Sam from a damn mile away. What the fuck is Sam doing here? And as his waiter, no less. And just like that, the hostess’ reaction now makes perfect freaking sense.
Steve quickly glances at Y/N, hoping she hasn’t looked up just yet, seeing that she is still buried in her menu, then he flicks his eyes back to ‘Will’ and he narrows them. The aforementioned ‘waiter’ just gives him a cheeky grin in return. ‘What are you doing here?’ He mouths to his soon to be ex best friend.
‘Taking your drink orders,’ Sam mouths back with a ‘duh’ expression on his face, causing Steve's eyes to narrow even more in warning.
“I’ll just take an iced tea,” Y/N pipes up and Steve shakes his head before begrudgingly saying, “and I’ll take a beer, whatever’s on tap.”
“Excellent choices,” Sam says excitedly and shoots Steve one more cheeky grin before he damn near runs away from the table. Leaving Steve feeling super confused, very irritated and entirely nervous as to just what his friend—hold that thought, he quickly glances around the restaurant, and his eyes lock on a table on the other side with three men and a woman, all in horrible disguises and he instantly knows who they are. Bucky, Tony, Clint and Nat—what his friends, he corrects in his head, have planned. Seriously, what the hell are they doing?!
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Readers POV
After ordering your drink, you finally decide which meal you’d like and then you place your menu down and glance up at Steve, curious if he’s decided yet or not. But before you can ask, you notice that he looks super out of it now. Like he is lost in thought, and he is entirely focused on something at the other side of the room. You glance over and see that he is looking—read, glaring—at a table with a few people sitting at it. “Do you know them?” You ask quietly, as you just continue to stare at them as well.
“Hmm?” He questions, “who?”
You turn to look at him again, seeing that his focus is now back on his menu. And once again, you feel extremely weird. “The people at that table over there,” you tip your head in it’s direction.
He looks up at you for a second, silently, before he rubs the back of his neck and glances back down at his menu. “Ah, possibly. I just ah, I think I know them from somewhere, but I can’t really remember exactly where.” He shrugs, “probably from work.”
You nod, his answer seeming a little forced and awkward, but you decide to just drop it. “So, any ideas on what you’d like to eat?”
“I was thinking the steak. It sounds delicious.”
“That’s what I was thinking about getting as well,” you smile to yourself, realizing you both seem to enjoy the same foods. Clearly that’s another thing you both have in common. Score!
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Steve's POV
His eyes continue to dart between the table with his so-called ‘friends’ and the beautiful woman across from him. He is furious at his team for crashing his date, and with each passing second he only becomes more and more angry. How could they do this to him? He was nervous enough about this date, and now they had to go and add more stress onto his already frazzled nerves.
It’s taking everything in him not to go over there and tell them all to leave. His eyes snap back to Y/N, and he wants to smack himself for barely paying any attention to the story she is midway through telling. Here he is supposed to be learning all about her, or at least learning about her first hand, instead of only going on the outside information he learned from Tony’s invasion of privacy folder.
And if barely paying any attention to his date, isn’t bad enough, he also lied to her about the occupants of that stupid table. He knows exactly who they are, but in a split second decision, he chooses to not inform Y/N of that. The last thing he wanted was for her to feel uncomfortable in any way. And his nosy friends crashing their date to spy on them, yeah, that makes him uncomfortable and he knows them. He can’t imagine how she’d react to this all, so he decided to keep their presence to himself. At least until he figures out exactly what they have planned, and why the hell they thought it was a good idea to crash his date.
He vows right then and there to tell her about his shitty friends once they leave the restaurant, and apologize for his white lie at that point. But that doesn’t really relieve his guilt over all of this, nor his stress.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Readers POV
It’s not hard to tell Steve is distracted by something, and you’d have to be blind to not notice him constantly glancing over at that table. To his credit, he is doing a pretty good job at hiding his immense interest in the four occupants, but you still noticed.
And maybe that has something to do with the fact that you’ve been talking about Eggo waffles and Oreos for the last 5 minutes, having ran on a hunch that he wasn’t really paying attention to you, and that hunch having turned out to be correct.
So here you are, telling him all your favourite flavours of Oreo, and describing exactly how you eat them. You are curious just how long it will take him to clue in and question you on your current conversation topic. So far, the timer just passed 5 minutes and is still going strong.
You have no idea who the people at that table are, but you figured Steve would tell you if you had anything to worry about. And since he hadn’t yet, you were trying to ignore the small pang of fear that they were bad people, hell-bent on hurting him, you, or both. He did deal with lots of bad, bad people in his line of work though. Or rather, he pissed off a lot of them. So you could only imagine how many wanted to cause him harm, or the people around him—But we aren’t focusing on that at the moment. One issue at a time here.
The waiter returns to drop off your drinks and take your food orders, and you don’t miss the small glare Steve sends him, which yeah, that’s fucking odd as well. You have no idea what this waiter did to him, but you can only assume it probably has something to do with the table of four. Maybe the waiter is a baddy as well?—Shit, if that is the case, then they have you both surrounded.
And what if they poison the food? Oh God! Maybe you should fake a tummy ache and see if Steve will take you home early? Ya know, just to be safe—you shake your head gently. Don’t be silly, like you already thought, if anything was wrong or if you were in any danger, Steve would have told you. Or at least made sure to protect you, he was a freaking superhero after all—
“Oreos?” He asks finally, the cutest furrow in his brows at his confusion on the current topic. The one you’d picked right back up the second the waiter walked away.
And you chuckle, that only took him 10 minutes. Not bad. But not really great either, you guess. “I like Oreos,” you shrug, trying to act casual. “So tell me a little about yourself. What kinds of sweets does Steve like?”
He chuckles, “I guess Oreos are pretty good, I’m also a fan of them. But my all time favourite are Reese’s peanut butter cups.”
“Really?” You ask leaning forward on your hand with your elbows on the table, genuinely intrigued by his choice in chocolate.
“Yeah,” he chuckles again. “When I woke up from the ice, I was really surprised to see that Reese’s were still around. I remember when they first started selling them, or at least when I first started buying them, back in the early 30’s. Though they were sold individually back then, and at only 2 cents a piece,” he chuckles a little more, shaking his head as he does. “It still boggles my mind how much has changed since then, but yet, some things have stayed exactly the same.”
“I can’t even imagine,” you say honestly, “what else has stayed the same?” And just as he starts to tell you a few other things, your eyes catch movement behind him and you glance towards it. Seeing an older woman sitting at a table, one away from yours, and facing you. With what looks like an older man sitting across from her, but you can only see the back of his head. But then you notice that she is looking down at the phone in her hands, intently, as it’s raised up in the air, above her table. What is that woman even doing? Is she—is she taking freaking pictures of you!?
Your eyes focus in on the phone in question and—wait a fucking second! Is that a damn cat DJing a pizza, in space?! You audibly gasp, as your eyes snap back up to lock on the ‘old ladies’, who is now looking at you and then yours narrow, accusingly. And at least the woman has the good sense to avert her eyes, quickly, but the damage has been done. So you then assess the back of the ‘old mans’ head, and come to an unwavering realization.
“Are you okay?”
“Hmm?” You flick your eyes back to Steve’s. “Oh, yeah. Yep. I’m just dandy,” your eyes again lock on the stupid ‘old woman’. “I just have to use the ladies room, I’ll be right back.” You abruptly stand, barely getting the words out before you quickly run away from your table. You glance back to make sure Steve isn’t watching and then forcefully yank the ‘old’ woman and man from their spots and drag them to the bathrooms with you. Not giving them a moment to protest.
Then the moment the door shuts you whirl around on them, grabbing the woman’s grey hair and pulling on it, leaving you holding a wig in your hands and glaring daggers at your, so called, best friends. If you weren’t so angry right now, you’d have commented on this being a wig snatching great time. But you're furious. Fuming, even.
“I really shouldn’t be in here,” Tyler points out unhelpfully.
“Oh please,” you scoff, “I’m more likely to check out the women in this bathroom than you are.”
He presses his lips together, nodding in agreement but he is smart enough to keep his lips zipped. Your eyes move over to glare menacingly at Lindsey.
“Look, we can explain,” she puts her hands up in submission.
“I sure fucking hope so,” you scold, crossing your arms like a pissed off parent. “Well, let’s hear it then. Come on, out with it. What could have possibly possessed you both to crash my date? Hmm?”
“It was his idea,” Lindsey points to Tyler, at the same time he points to her, “it was her idea.”
They both gasp, scandalized, and glare at each other. “Liar!” They say in unison. Another gasp from both, “I am not!” and again, in unison.
You feel like they rehearsed this, they had to have. And if, by the off chance that they didn’t, then they clearly share the same wave link. And obviously a dumb one, at that.
“Okay, whoever’s idea it was aside,” you wave a dismissive hand around. “You both not only agreed to crash my date, but followed through with that stupid plan. So how I see it, you are both at fault here.” You sigh, some of the wind in your sails vanishing, “now, the real question is what the hell guys?” You shift your eyes between the two, “you both knew how excited and nervous I was for this date, how could you think this was a smart idea? The last thing I needed was more stress added into the mix. And the fear of Steve realizing you are both here, now that adds a lot of unnecessary stress onto me.”
“Sorry,” they both mumble with their heads down, like scolded children. And you believe you are getting through to these two knuckleheads. Buuuuuut then Tyler has to go and ruin it, “but it was actually Lindsey's idea, just to clarify.”
Linds jerks her head up and glares at him, “it was ‘our’ idea, traitor!” She hisses out. And just like that, they are back to bickering again.
You groan loudly and clench your eyes shut, taking a deep calming breath before you intervene, “okay, enough!” They both snap their mouths shut and turn to you. “I don’t have time to stand here and listen to you both argue. Unless you forgot, I’m sort of supposed to be on a date right now, and I’ve now been standing in the women’s bathroom for an entirely too long amount of time. Steve’s going to think I encountered a damn basilisk or something,” you sigh, shaking your head.
“Do you think he’d even understand that reference?” Tyler asks the room, then turns to Lindsey, “do you think anyones shown him those movies yet?”
Lindsey gives him an odd look, “of course he’s seen them. They are a huge part of this generation, there is no way that no one in his life has shown him the Potter franchise yet.”
Tyler nods slowly, “unless his friends all suck, I guess.”
“Very valid point, Ty—“ Linds starts but you cut in.
“Not important at the moment, guys,” you say as you uncross your arms and point a menacing finger at them. “Now, I’d ask you both to leave, but I know you won’t listen to me. So instead, I’ll ask that since you both are hell-bent on crashing my date, the least you could do is not be so damn obvious about it. Please, no more photos, and for the love of God, do not let Steve know you both are here, got it?”
“Got it,” they both mumble. Then Tyler quietly says, you think mainly to himself, “but Harry Potter is always important.”
You ignore his comment and walk passed both of them and exit the bathroom, not having anything else to say to either of them. Because honestly, it would just be a waste of time, those two do exactly what they want, no matter what you say or how you reason with them. So there isn’t even a point in wasting the breath at the moment. They will stay and lurk on you and Steve either way. However, you honestly wouldn’t change either of them for the world. They may frustrate the hell out of you, but you get them back all the time. It’s a 50/50 thing, for sure.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Steve's POV
The moment she is up from the table and has walked off, he pulls out his phone and brings up the group chat to fire off a message. ‘What the hell are you guys doing here?’
His eyes flick up to watch his friends, as they each pull out their phones and read his text. Then they all look over at him and give him their best innocent smiles, and then his phone vibrates with a message and he glances down to see it’s from Tony. ‘We are just here for dinner, such a coincidence that we happened to pick the same restaurant as you two.’
Steve shoots Tony a glare before checking that Y/N isn’t in sight and standing up to stomp over to their table. “Oh yeah? Just getting dinner, hey? Then what’s with the get ups,” he flicks the obviously fake wig on Bucky’s head, causing the Jerk to swat his hand away just as he continues on to hiss out, “and why the hell is Sam our waiter?”
“Look, Steve,” Nat starts and his heated glare snaps to her, causing her to put her hands up in surrender. “I had no hand in this idiotic plan, it was entirely their idea,” she points at Bucky and Tony, causing the latter to gasp and the former to—well, to look pretty fucking guilty, if you ask Steve. But she just turns back to Steve and continues on, “I only chose to join them to make sure they didn’t fuck your date up too badly.” Then Clint pipes up, also putting his hands up in surrender, “and I’m just here for the food.”
“Traitors,” Tony accuses in a hissed whisper.
Clint just shrugs, and Nat looks at Tony and crosses her arms, “you can call me whatever you like, Tony. But I refuse to get on Steve’s bad side because of your stupid ideas. No fucking thank you, that’s a bullet I won’t take for you.”
Tony shoots her one last glare before correcting his features and turning to Steve, clearly trying to salvage the situation. “We just wanted to be here for moral support. In case you needed any backup. Isn’t that right, Manchurian Candidate,” he elbows Bucky for support, but the Jerk knows that no matter what they say, Steve will be pissed. So best to keep his mouth shut for now, which is blatantly obvious by the way he presses his lips together and refuses to look at Steve.
“Bullshit,” Steve says as he crosses his arms. “Your choice to be here has nothing to do with backing me up, but I don’t have time to stand here and argue with you. I’m supposed to be on a fucking date and I can barely focus on Y/N with you assholes sitting here. So eat your food and get out, we will talk when I get back to the tower,” he says that last part like a threat. They are so fucking in for it when he gets home, and he wants them all to know it. “And tell Sam to let a real waiter take over, I dunno who you all bribed to let you pull this shit, but if a real waiter isn’t the next person to approach my damn table, I’ll be even more pissed off,” then with that said, he spins on his heel and quickly makes his way back to the table. Glad that Y/N hasn’t come out of the bathroom just yet, so she didn’t see him scolding the table of assholes.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Readers POV
You quickly make your way back to the table, seeing Steve sitting by himself and feel like an asshole for taking so long, scolding your shit ass friends. You quickly retake your seat and feel the need to apologize. “Sorry that took so long,” you pause, because what the hell excuse are you supposed to use!? Shit, you should have thought about this before you sat back down! “Ah, just as I was washing my hands, my um, my mom called.” Shit, that was a horrible excuse. What is wrong with you?!
“Oh?” Steve asks hesitantly, “is everything okay?”
“Oh yes, yeah,” you nod quickly. Maybe too quickly but no taking it back now. “She just forgot I had a date tonight, I told her I’d call her back later.”
He seems to give you an odd look for a moment, before finally nodding and glancing around the restaurant. “Does it feel like the food is taking a really long time, or is it just me?”
You glance around as well, not seeing a single waiter or waitress in sight, “no, it’s not just you. I think we ordered like 30 minutes ago, maybe?”
He nods, “yeah, something like that.”
“I’m sure it won’t be much longer,” you comment, trying to be positive. “And it just means we get more time to talk.”
He smiles at you, “well, in that case, let’s hope the food never comes.”
And swooooon. You couldn’t not swoon over his words even if you tried. You give him a grin, and you know for a fact that it’s probably the biggest, goofiest thing he’s ever seen, but you can’t help it. “Fingers crossed,” you trail off from starting a new conversation as you see your, so called, friends doing the walk of shame from the bathroom and retaking their seats at their table. And before you can stop yourself, the words are already leaving your mouth, unfiltered. “Ever wanted to smack someone upside the head with a frying pan?” You abruptly ask, and then mumble out, “Cause I’m getting that feeling right about now.”
Steve snorts and you realize he was mid sip of his beer when you asked, and you watch as he quickly gulps down his mouthful, before his eyes flick over to the table of four for a second, then snap back to you. “All the time, actually.”
You give the table an inconspicuous side eye, and notice there are actually now five people sitting around it. So they have clearly gained another occupant, you see. And, that’s neat. Glad to see the baddies are growing in number. Excellent. Just freaking excellent. This night is not going to plan, not one fucking bit. And seriously, where the hell is your food!?
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Steve's POV
He glances down at the watch on his wrist and sees that it’s now, 7:27. Their reservation had been for 6:30, and so they have now been waiting on their food for at least 40 minutes. He is willing to bet that his ‘friends’ have something to do with why their food is taking so long, just another thing he will scold them all for later.
And the longer the food takes, the more intense of a scolding they’ll get. Mark his words now, this will be the last time they ever pull a stunt like this on him or anyone, ever again. He’ll make sure of it.
“Sorry for the delay,” a new voice chimes in from about them, and Steve glances up to see his first unfamiliar face since the hostess. “Ah, Will had a um, an emergency, so my name is Kyle, I’ll be taking over for him.” He places two new drinks down to replace the now two empty ones. “These drinks are on the house, as an apology for the wait. But it shouldn’t be too much longer for your food to be ready.”
Y/N thanks the new—actual—waiter, and Steve just nods, a small triumphant smile on his face as he glances over at the table, to see Sam now sitting with the others. Good, at least they can still follow orders, that will win them some points with him tonight.
The new waiter—Kyle—scurries off back to the kitchen door and Steve turns his attention back to Y/N. “Did you have a better time at work, this week?” He asks, genuinely curious how this recent week went, since he was more than aware that her last week hadn’t been very fun for her. He’d been meaning to ask about how she was doing with the media and the new popularity all night, as he had worried all week about her.
And just as she started to tell him all about her week, he lifts up his fresh beer and takes a very generous gulp. Only for the fact that as a super soldier, Steve can’t get drunk. At least not off regular beer. Though he furrows his brows once the cold liquid slides down his throat, because—does this taste different than the last beer he had? Wouldn’t they give him the same one he’d ordered before?
He internally shrugs, maybe they just ran out of the other beer so they gave him this one instead. It’s no big deal, he really likes the taste of this new one, and it was free. If there is anything Steve’s learned since waking up from the ice in this new—and expensive—era, it’s that you should never ever pass up free things. So he’ll drink it either way, even if just for that simple fact alone.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Readers POV
After a few more minutes of just talking about both of your weeks, the waiter returns and finally places your food on the table in front of you. And not a moment too late, you were seriously beginning to weigh the pros and cons of cannibalism—Okay, maybe you were going that extreme yet, but you were getting pretty dang hungry for sure.
You and Steve don’t waste a second, and both cease the conversations as you start to eat your respective meals, as the waiter scurries off to wherever waiters go while the patrons eat. Probably to check on the other customers. Your eyes drift back to the table of fo—five now, and you see them all eating their food now as well. So you allow yourself a moment to just breathe, and eat, and pretend like that table still isn’t worrying you. A lot.
After another few moments, and most of both your plates now empty, you see that Steve has finished his beer. But you only make that observation because he accidentally slams the glass down on the table, not breaking the glass, but the look he gives it after the loud clanking bang, leads you to believe he didn’t mean to be that forceful with it.
Your eyes flick up to his face, and you see he is a little flushed now, his eyes a little bloodshot and—wait, is he drunk?
“This food was amazing!” He damn near yells, and yep, yeah, you believe he is in fact drunk. Oh lordy, this should be fun..
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Steve's POV
Something isn’t right. He don’t feel ..right. He glances around the room, but quickly halts his eyes when he feels like the room is rocking. Spinning almost and that makes his stomach do somersaults. His eyes look down to his now empty glass, his brows furrowing, he can’t get drunk. But yet, he feels drunk. He feels just like he did that day Thor let him try the Asgardian mead—his eyes snap over to the table of his ‘friends’ and it instantly hits him—The beer didn’t taste weird because it was different, it tasted weird because they freaking spiked his drink.
Oh, they are so going to pay for this one. He huffs, as he attempts to glare holes in the sides of his ‘friends’ heads. They are all making a point to not look his way, they know they're in shit now. The fuckers—
“Who’s going to pay?”
Steve’s eyes widen as they flick back over to meet Y/N’s. Shit, did he say that out loud?! And before he can even attempt to come up with a quick cover up, his lips are moving and spilling the truth, much to his surprise and dismay. “My horrible friends,” he manages to get a hold of his lips before he says anything more, he presses them together in an effort to keep the rest of his words in. However, the adorable confused expression now on Y/N’s face makes him smile, and he is sure he looks like a crazy person at the moment. But honestly, he doesn’t really care at the moment. Maybe he will later, but not right now. “You’re adorable when you frown,” he chuckles.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Readers POV
You were still trying to figure out what he meant by ‘his horrible friends with pay for this’, but then he has to go and say you’re adorable and that halted all your thoughts, immediately. Damn, who knew you were so weak to compliments. Once again, some journalist you are. Geesh—Focus woman! Your eyes drift back to the table of five, and you give them a more thorough looking over and—holy fuck, is that Bucky Barnes. Wait, wait, wait, and Tony Stark. AND Natasha Romanov. Oh shit, and Clint Barton. And freaking SAM WILSON! Hold up, Sam looks exactly like your last waiter, Will.
And oooooh, it all makes so much sense now. You burst out laughing at the realization that not just your shitty friends crashed this date, Steve’s did too. Oh God, this is just too damn good. “Steve?” You ask softly, bringing his attention back to you. He’d been inspecting the table, as if to make sure it was structurally sound.
“Yeah?” He asks, sounding slightly out of it.
“Question?—err, actually maybe two questions,” you hastily amend and he chuckles.
“Okay,” he nods, a little too quickly, and hiccups as he speaks his next words, “W-what are they?”
“Is that your team over there?” You nod with your head towards the table of five, but keep your eyes fixated on the large blonde.
He scrunches up his face and opens his mouth to speak, but then sighs deeply and lowers his eyes to the table, then mumbles “yeah, it is.” But then as if it just hit him in the face, he snaps his head up and starts speaking again, a little louder this time—read, damn near yelling again. “I’m so sorry, Y/N. I had no idea they were going to be here—“
You cut him off with your laugh, and he furrows his brows, his mouth still open as he clearly tries to figure out what’s so funny. You try valiantly to reign in your laugh, but this is all just too damn hilarious. “Y/N?” He asks hesitantly, confusion in his voice.
And you realize you have to say something, anything, so between laboured breaths and chuckles to manage to spit out in a whisper, “see the old couple behind you, a table away?”
Steve’s lips form a frown and he glances over his shoulder, not even remotely in a graceful manner. Then his whips back around and nods at you, “yeah,” he says slowly.
“Those two ‘old people’,” you make quote signs with your fingers, “are my two idiot best friends in disguise. They also crashed our date,” and those words make you laugh all over again at this whole weird situation. Your words clearly take a second to sink in, but as if a light just lit up, Steve’s frown disappears and he starts to laugh with you. Louder than you, actually. And so loud that it draws the attention of everyone in the rest restaurant, including both tables of your date crashing friends. Every last one of them.
“You’re joking?” He manages to say between boisterous laughs. You shake your head as you say, “not even a little bit.”
He laughs a little more, shaking his head as well. “That is too funny.”
You nod, agreeing with him, “that it is. Looks like both our friends are,” you raise your voice so all the people in question can hear you clearly, “nosey assholes.” Though your words are more directed at your two best friends, but maybe also a little at Steve’s. And one quick glance at both tables, and the scandalized expressions around both causes you to burst out laughing again. After a few moments, you both manage to calm down a little, enough to speak again at least. You quickly rub the tears from your eyes, as Steve takes a few deep breaths. Then you think of something, “and here I thought my friends were invasive. At least they didn’t fake being our waiter,” you giggle.
Steve groans, then chuckles a little more, “were you really surprised they’d go to that length? They did sort of force you to goto that press conference.”
“Oh shit,” you chuckle a little more, “I didn’t even think of that!”
“Yeah,” Steve shakes his head, “they are always sticking their noses in other people's lives. It’s rather frustrating,” he mumbles the last part, and you believe more so to himself.
“Wait,” Steve abruptly says, “you said you had two questions?”
You grin, nodding slowly as your second question pops back up into your head. Though you’re going to amend it a little. You were going to ask if he was drunk, but you're positive now that he is. So your question is a little changed, “so I’m guessing they spiked your drink, which means you can’t drive?”
“Shit,” Steve mumbles as his face pales and all the humour leaves his features. “I’m so sorry, Y/N, I can call you a cab, if you want? I’ll pay for it.”
“No,” a sly grin works its way onto your lips. “I have a better idea.” You stand up from the table and Steve slowly stands as well. Though you can see his very evident wobble from the booze. “Come with me,” you gesture for him to join you, offer him your hand for what little support you can give him. Ya know, since he is much larger than yourself, and if he starts to go down, you won’t be able to save him. But the gesture is what matters, right?
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Steve's POV
He is feeling the full effects of the mead as he stands, wobbling a little before quickly gaining his balance. If he falls flat on his face in front of her, he will be out for blood. She offers him her hand and he glances down at the outstretched appendage, then almost laughs. If he does go down, there is no way in hell she’ll be able to stop him, and he’ll just end up taking her down with him. But the chance to hold her hand, can’t be passed up, even in Steve’s mead muddled mind, he knows that fact clear as day.
He smiles and takes her hand, allowing her to lead the way and he quickly realizes where she is taking them. And the slightly panicked eyes of his friends makes him chuckle again. They reach the table of five, and Steve gives a curious look to Y/N, unsure where exactly she is going to take this. But he isn’t gonna lie, he’s excited to see what her master plan is.
“Avengers,” she nods in hello and smiles at each of them.
His friends all give each other strange, nervous looks before Tony speaks up, “Y/N,” he nods then looks at Steve. “Steve.” Before his eyes move back to the little woman holding Steve's hand tightly. “I see you’ve figured us out,” he chuckles awkwardly.
“That I have,” she giggles, “wasn’t too hard, once you spiked Steve’s drink.”
“That was Sam’s doing,” Tony quickly says, earning a gasp from the aforementioned.
“It might have been my doing, but it was Tony’s idea,” Sam quickly defends, pointing a menacing finger at the billionaire. Ugh, here we go again, Steve thinks.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Readers POV
Tony is just about to speak, but you cut in before he can. You aren’t interested in their bickering about who did what, and who’s behind this whole thing. You got enough of that from your own friends. “It’s okay, we aren’t mad,” you glance up at Steve, and see him about to refute your words, but one pointed look from you and he presses his lips together and nods in agreement.
“We aren’t,” he mumbles, the words not sounding overly convincing but it’s the thought that counts.
You bite your lip to prevent the new laugh from escaping. “But,” you abruptly say, “there are conditions to us not being upset.”
And Tony clearly tries to fight the grin that wants to show through, as he narrows his eyes at you, “and those are?”
“Our bill still needs to be paid,” you say calmly, commandingly so that Tony is aware you mean he will be paying it. And as you speak you are fighting to not look too excited for your next words. Tony nods slowly, hesitantly, and says, “okay, and?”
Your grin breaks through, and you see Tony shiver from the smug smile. “Since Steve is unable to drive currently, I will be driving him home and will return your car to you in the morning—“. Tony cuts in, “what? No, no, that doesn’t seem—“. “Tony,” Steve cuts in this time, sternly, clearly trying not to laugh.
“You all were the ones who crashed our date and spiked his drink,” you say, “therefore, hindering him from being able to drive. So these are the consequences, I’ve driven supercars before, so you don’t have to worry about that.”
Tony doesn’t seem convinced, at all, but everyone else at the table seems highly amused by all of this. “I think it’s only fair,” Nat pipes up, a smug grin on her face to match yours. “I agree with Nat,” Clint mumbles through his mouthful of food. Tony shoots them both a glare, then sighs, “fine, you can take the car for the night.”
And you are just about to squeal and jump up and down, when he abruptly adds, “but,” he points a finger at you then at Steve, “if there is so much as a single scratch on it tomorrow, Steve is covering the repair bill.”
Steve gives you a look, one that screams ‘now just wait one second, let’s talk about this a little first’ But you just ignore him, and nod at Tony, “Deal.” And before Steve can say a word, you begin to drag him away from the table, hearing Tony chuckle and say quietly, “I like that one,” to the others. Which only causes your smile to grow as you continue to pull Steve towards the front door of the restaurant.
As you both stand on the sidewalk, waiting for the valet to bring the car around and you are vibrating with excitement! This is your damn dream car and you GET TO DRIVE IT! Aaaaah! Shit!! Is this real life?!—A deep chuckle from beside you, causes you to come back to reality, and you glance up at the tall blonde. This day has been the weirdest one in your entire life, not only did you get to go on a date with thee Steve Rogers, but now you get to drive your dream car?! This is all just too much! Too damn much! But in all the best ways. “Sorry,” you smile bashfully up at him, as you tuck a few wayward strands of hair behind your ear, “I’m a little excited.”
“I can see that,” he nods, a glorious smile playing on his own lips. Just as you are about to speak, the beautiful sound of the supercars exhaust can be heard coming towards you, and before you know it, the Mclaren P1 is directly in front of you. In all it’s shiny black glory, and you are sure you’re dreaming. You have to be. Either that, or you’re drooling.
The valet goes to hand the keys to Steve, but you intervene and take them before he can, and then you get an idea. You quickly unlock the car and open up the door for Steve, who gives you an odd look, so you say with a shrug, “it’s my turn to be the gentleman.”
Which causes him to chuckle and hesitantly slip into the passenger seat then you close the door and make your way around to the driver's seat.
And before you know it, you are pulling up out front of the Avengers Tower. Steve had told you on the drive that he normally lives out at the compound now, but still has a room at the tower and stays there from time to time.
You shut the car off and quickly gesture for him to wait, receiving another odd look from the blonde. You quickly get out of the car and race around to open his door, you are determined to be the ‘gentleman’ this time. Steve deserves as much.
He chuckles again as he clues into what you’re doing, then climbs out of the car and you begin to walk him up to the tower's front doors.
Once you both reach the doors, you halt your steps and turn to him, he does the same but in reverse, halting and turning towards you.
“I had—“. “Thank you—“. You both speak at the same time and laugh, then he says, “I’m sorry, go ahead.”
“I just wanted to say I had a wonderful time tonight.”
“Even with our friends crashing the date?” He asks, one brow raised.
You giggle, “yes, even with that. It made for a very memorable first date.”
“That it did,” Steve nods. “And I just wanted to say thank you, for not only going out with me, but for putting up with my shitty friends.”
You wave it off, “they aren’t so bad. I think it was rather sweet that all of our friends crashed our date. Really shows how much they care, even in their own weird ways.”
He nods again, as he glances down at the ground, one hand coming up to rub the back of his neck, “would you be interested in doing this again sometime?”
You grin brightly, you couldn’t stop it even if you tried. “No, I wouldn’t be interested in doing this again.” Before you can finish your sentence, Steve's head snaps up and he gives you one of thee saddest looks you’ve ever seen in your life. “Just wait,” you giggle, putting your hands up to halt him, “let me finish. But yes, I’d love to go on another date with you, preferably one without our friends being present.”
His frown morphs into a brilliant grin, “yes, no friends on the next one for sure.”
“Okay, well I should get home,” you say reluctantly, “but I’ll call you in the morning before I head over to drop the car off, and maybe we can do coffee and a walk? Just the two of us?”
“I’d love that,” he nods. “And yes, just the two of us.”
“Perfect,” you smile, and lean up to plant a kiss on his check, but at the last second you change course and lightly place your lips upon his. And just as you are about to pull back, his arms move around your waist and pull you into him as he deepens the kiss.
Which yeah, you fucking swoon at that too, and if he were to let go of you right now, you’d melt into the sidewalk. You’d become a human puddle.
But luckily for you, he doesn’t release you right away and you both drown in each other for a few moments before you reluctantly pull back and he does that same. “Goodnight, Steve,” you say softly, breathlessly as you take a step back.
“Goodnight, Y/N. See you in the morning.”
You smile, “see ya then.” You turn and head back towards the car, a skip in your step that you know Steve can clearly see, but you don’t care. You are too happy right now, for a bunch of different reasons.
You glance towards him as you pull up the driver's door and see he is still standing there, watching you, and your tummy does flips. You wave, receiving one in return, then climb into the supercar and close the door.
The whole drive home you can’t wipe the grin off your lips, no matter how hard you try. So maybe you were a little over dramatic in the beginning of this story, maybe you made this night out to be a lot worse than it actually was. Because it wasn’t the worst date you’d ever been on, not by a long shot. It was actually the best, if you’re being honest.
This all started with you being a Drunk Twitter tweeter, and ended with Steve being, well, being Just Drunk honestly. But you wouldn’t change a damn thing, not one second, because even the bad moments all lead up to this glorious one. The start of something so, so special.
And now you have a coffee date with Steve in the morning, and—if you have any say in the matter—many, many more dates to come. This is just the beginning, and you can not wait to see where this all ends up. But something deep, deep down is telling you, that you’re going to love the journey to the end. More than anything, because you’ll get to make that journey beside Steve. And honestly, what more could a woman want than that? Nothing, that’s what.
A Far Green Country
Suggested listening: (x) (x)
“FRI, how’s the kid doing?” Tony asked when he had a moment to breathe between killing aliens.
“Peter’s heart-rate is high, Boss, and he hasn’t moved in almost a minute,” FRIDAY reported.
“Is he hurt?”
“Karen isn’t reporting any injuries.” Well, that was something, at least.
“Patch me into his baby monitor feed, just the audio,” Tony ordered, eyes still scanning the battlefield in front of him.
“You’re... you’re going to be ok,” Peter was assuring someone, his voice shaking. Tony’s heart plummeted.
“You’re pretty new at this, huh?” said a female voice. Her words were thick with pain. “I’m a nurse, Spidey. I know what a fatal wound looks like.”
“FRI, give me Karen’s analysis of her injuries,” Tony muttered. Instantly, a chart pulled up on Tony’s HUD, flashing red in all the areas she was hurt. There was a lot of red. A broken spine, broken collarbone, one leg pinned with rubble, and the worst part, a long splinter of wood piercing her abdomen, perforating her large intestine.
She was right. She was going to die.
“Hey, don’t say that,” Peter chided gently. He had the same diagnosis Tony did. “What’s your name?”
“Nicole,” she said. Tony dove toward a rogue alien, blasting it with both repulsors. Black Widow sprinted past him, a pack of the creatures chasing her; Tony twisted in midair and followed, picking them off one by one.
“Nice to meet you, Nicole. I’m Spi—I’m Peter.” Tony squeezed his eyes closed for a brief moment. Peter would never compromise his identity, not if he knew there was any chance of her getting out of this alive.
Nicole seemed to realize it, too, because she let out a small sob.
“You-you have to tell my fiancé, ok? Jonathan. He, uh, he’s got brown hair and-and glasses, and you have to tell him.” Her voice broke.
Tony mechanically dodged an attack, blocked a hit meant for Sam. His mind was with Peter, in whatever devastated apartment he was crouched in with a dying woman.
“I will,” Peter vowed. He sniffled and Tony swallowed hard. He wanted to go and find Peter, pull him away from the scene so he didn’t have to see this. No one should have to watch someone die. But he couldn’t. Peter would never forgive him from depriving Nicole some comfort in her last moments.
“Give him this. He... won’t believe you otherwise.”
“This is the Evenstar. From Lord of the Rings.”
There were only a handful of aliens left. Tony landed by Steve, helped him with a small herd of them.
“Yeah, he got it for me at comic-con. Where we met,” Nicole said, chuckling breathlessly, only to cut off in a small cough. “So, Spider-Man’s a nerd?”
“The biggest,” Peter assured her, and Tony could picture the reassuring smile he would be giving under his mask, the way his eyes would be filled with tears.
“Good. Te-tell him that I’m going to a far, green country.”
Peter sobbed. “Ok. Ok.”
“You crying for me?”
“Yeah,” Peter said, unashamed.
There was a small moment of quiet, where she seemed to comprehend the importance of a superhero, kneeling at her side, crying for her loss. “Thanks, Peter,” Nicole whispered.
Peter hiccuped again.
“Don’t you have some aliens to be fighting?” she asked.
Tony had to stop himself from cutting in, from telling Peter that they were done, that Clint and Sam were taking care of the last couple right now. That Peter shouldn’t leave her.
“I can stay. It’s alright,” Peter assured her. Because he never would have left. Not when someone needed him.
Nicole whimpered, her tears audible through Peter’s comm. “Thanks, Spidey.”
Tony listened as her breathing quickly got worse, as she started gasping in pain. Peter gently shushed her, reminding her that he was there.
“Squeeze my hand as hard as you need, ok? It won’t hurt me.”
There was the sound of wet coughing, interspersed with pain-filled cries.
“Hey, Karen,” Peter said quietly. “Play “A Far, Green Country” from my study playlist.”
“Of course, Peter,” Karen replied sympathetically.
Soft cello music began to filter through Tony’s earpiece. He stood still, watching in a detached sort of way as ambulances and firetrucks started arriving to the scene of the battle, as people began to peek out of their hiding places.
“Hear that, Nicole?” Peter asked. “Just focus on the music, ok? It’ll be ok.”
“I love... this one,” Nicole murmured.
The music crescendoed. Her ragged breaths slowed.
She was dead by the end of the song.
Tony listened, jaw clenched, his own eyes surprisingly damp as Peter started sobbing, the sound muffled like he was covering his mouth.
He went on to the team channel.
“Can you guys handle clean-up? I need to get Spidey out of here,” Tony said, his own voice soft in the aftermath of what he heard.
“Is he hurt?” Steve asked quickly.
“No. No, just... it’s his first big battle. He’s in shock.”
There was a moment of silent understanding. They’d all gone through the same thing the first time they had fought in battles that were more destruction than preservation, more dying than saving.
“Make sure he eats something,” Nat said over the line, and that’s all the confirmation Tony needed. He switched to a two-way comm.
“Hey, Pete,” he said softly. He heard sniffing, the sound of Peter wiping his tears away.
“Mr. Stark. Sorry, where do you need me? I can be-“
“Stand down, kid. Fight’s over.” He couldn’t make himself talk above a murmur, like speaking any louder would be the final straw before Peter lost it completely. “We’re getting out of here. Where are you?”
Peter rattled of a quick address, but then hesitated. “I... I’ll meet you in a few minutes, ok? There’s something I have to do.”
Tony flew over to where he was anyway. He stood in the shadow of fire engine, watching as Spider-Man crawled down the side of a partially destroyed building. There was a crowd of onlookers standing behind a police cordon, their faces pale and scared.
Peter walked over to them. There was a man with brown hair and glasses in the second row of people. Tony almost wanted to look away.
Instead, he watched. He watched as Peter carefully led him a few feet away, as he held out the necklace Nicole gave him and delivered her message. He watched as the man’s face crumpled, as tears spilled over, and finally, as his knees gave out.
Peter caught him. Lowered him to the ground and held on, hugging him on his knees, his own shoulders shaking with sobs.
Watching him, Tony felt his heart clench in nearly physical pain. It hurt to see the man mourning his lost fiancée, but for some reason, Peter’s grief affected him more. He wanted to go over and comfort him, wipe his tears away. The need to make Peter feel better was so strong he almost couldn’t stop himself from flying over that second.
He knew he needed to let Peter have this moment, this first step toward acceptance, this chance to be his own person for a moment, to let the world see the same kindness and compassion and heart that Tony saw in Peter every single day.
He just wished it didn’t come at the cost of Peter’s innocence. He just wanted Peter to be happy. More than anything in the world, he wanted Peter to be happy.
Oh, Tony thought as that realization sunk down into the pit of his stomach and took root.
I love him.
A few other onlookers had come forward and taken Jonathan by the arms, assuring Spider-Man that they would take care of him.
Pressing pause on his epiphany, Tony stepped out of the shadows. Peter turned to him like a child looking for his parent in a crowd.
“Hey, bud,” Tony said. “Ready?”
Peter nodded, his breath still catching. Tony picked him up, making sure Peter was secure, before carefully taking off.
When they got to the tower, Peter waited until Tony set him down gently on his own feet, then walked forward without speaking, his shoulders slumped and head bowed.
Tony stepped out of the suit and followed, watching carefully. Peter sunk down into the nearest chair, a stool at the breakfast bar. His hands scrabbled weakly at his mask, unable to find the seam. Tony came closer and stilled Peter’s hands with his own, then tugged the mask off with one hand. He set it on the counter, then smoothed out Peter’s wild curls.
Peter’s face was pale, the redness around his eyes stark against his dark irises. He trapped his hands between his knees to try to hide the shaking, but Tony had already spotted it.
“Nat made me promise to feed you,” Tony said, his voice loud in the quiet of the penthouse. “What’re thinking, kid? I can do boxed mac and cheese, frozen chicken nuggets, or good old PB&J. Or all three, if you’re a masochist.”
Peter carefully didn’t look at Tony, probably trying to keep him from noticing his red eyes.
“I—” His voice was hoarse. He cleared his throat and tried again. “I’m not really hungry.”
“Not an option, kiddo. Sorry. How about I get you some juice to get that blood sugar up while I get cooking, alright?”
Tony rounded the island, busying himself with getting Peter some of the cranberry apple juice he liked so much, turning the oven on to start preheating. The kid needed some protein to make up for all the calories he burned fighting.
When he looked over his shoulder again, Peter was sitting with his head on his folded arms, his face hidden. Tony’s heart plummeted. He could still hear the echo of those muffled sobs, the sounds of a kid who thought he was too old, too strong to be crying, but who was too heartbroken not to.
Tony would never judge the kid for crying. He knew Peter was strong, he knew it possibly better than Peter himself. He also knew how overwhelming and horrifying your first battle, your first loss, could be. He hated that Peter felt the need to hide his emotions, his incredibly empathetic and tender nature from Tony.
Standing on the opposite side of the counter, he reached out and ran his fingers through Peter’s hair. Peter’s breath hitched just a little, and he slowly raised his head until he could look at Tony through the fringe of his lashes.
Tony seized the opportunity and slid his hand down to Peter’s chin, raising his head further. There were no fresh tears on Peter’s face, so maybe he hadn’t been crying after all. He still looked devastated and wrung-out.
He didn’t know what to say in the face of such innocent, honest grief that wouldn’t sound cheap and patronizing.
“I... I’m really, really proud of you, Pete,” he finally murmured.
There was a flash in Peter’s eyes, a single heartbeat where he thought Tony was mocking him. Then he slumped, his jaw pressing further into Tony’s hand.
“Mr. Stark, I... there was this woman,” Peter said, his voice gravelly. “I was trying to clear an apartment building and I found her and, and she was hurt really bad. And I didn’t want to leave her but I knew you guys needed me—” Peter’s eyes flit to one side, as if too ashamed to look at Tony, “—and I didn’t know what to do so I... I stayed. And I held her hand. Instead of coming to help you. You could have gotten hurt and it would have been my fault, but I just kept thinking if it had been me I wouldn’t want to be alone and she-she died, Mr. Stark,” Peter hiccupped. His eyes were full of tears again, and suddenly Tony could picture it so clearly, Peter kneeling by a stranger’s side and crying even while he comforted her. While he played music to distract her from the agony and fear.
“Oh, Peter,” Tony sighed. He came around the counter and pulled Peter in by the shoulders. Peter buried his face against Tony’s sternum, sniffling.
“Firstly, it’s not your job to look after all of us, ok? That’s why there’s a team of us, so we all can keep an eye on each and no one has to shoulder all of it. We were all ok, we were looking out for one another. Sometimes you get busy and can’t help for a bit, that’s fine. And you did a great job today, buddy, you really did.”
Peter’s fingers tentatively grasped Tony’s t-shirt and his heart constricted.
“Secondly—” Tony once again raised Peter’s face to meet his eyes. The kid looked desperate, fervently listening to any shred of wisdom Tony might bestow on him. “You never, ever have to apologize for being compassionate. That’s something you can’t learn, kid. You either have it or you don’t, and you have it. I wish I was as empathetic as you.”
Peter looked up at him, half hope and half doubt, and something in Tony’s chest settled.
How had it taken this long for Tony to realize that he loved him?
When Tony reached up and squeezed the back of Peter’s neck, his touch was gentler than it had ever been before.
“Why don’t you go take a shower before the rest of the circus troupe come and screw up the water pressure?” Tony suggested.
Peter nodded, swallowing. Tony kept a hand on his elbow as he hopped off the stool, just to make sure he was steady. Then he watched as Peter slouched off to his room, the Spider-Man mask drooping dejectedly in his hand.
His mind buzzing, Tony carefully spread the chicken out on a pan and put it in the oven, making sure to put on a timer. Then he slumped in the chair Peter had just abandoned and thought.
He had never been great about recognizing his own emotions. It had taken Afghanistan for him to realize that Rhodey and Happy were his family, that Pepper was much, much more than his assistant that he liked to flirt with. He’d kept them at a distance on purpose, too self-absorbed and miserable to let himself have that small piece of happiness.
Maybe for the kid’s own good, Tony should have done the same thing with Peter, but he couldn’t seem to make himself. Because Peter... Tony liked everything about Peter. His optimism, his enthusiasm, his uncompromising morals. He liked the way the kid got lost in his work, the way he fell asleep during movies, the way he talked a mile a minute to his AI when he was nervous. He liked the way Peter made him act—the responsibility and softness and sometimes silliness that the kid brought out in him.
He tried to think back, to a time before he loved Peter and found he just... couldn’t. Obviously there was one, but now every memory was so colored with fondness and bone-deep admiration that he couldn’t find a before and after. Every time Peter was there in his memories, there was love. The two words were almost synonymous. Now that Tony had connected them, they couldn’t be separated.
He felt the same palpable adoration when he thought about Pepper, but where Pepper was a fire, burning constant and steady and familiar in his sternum, Peter was an eternal sunrise. Bringing the promise of light, of warmth, of a new beginning. Infinite possibilities about to unfold and Tony loved every one of them; he loved the Peter that had just been sitting in front of him, sweat curled hair and fidgeting hands, and he loved every version of Peter that would come—the exhausted college student, the nervous new father, the CEO or inventor or doctor.
Now that he recognized the feeling in his chest that he got whenever he so much as thought of the kid, he felt full to bursting with it. It was a surprisingly good feeling.
Peter walked back into the room, his hair curling and damp. He looked a little less worn out, a little more like his usual self. He’d just need time, Tony knew, to recover. He never stayed down for long.
Tony found himself smiling as he watched Peter comb his fingers through his hair. The room seemed brighter with Peter in it.
Gosh, he was a sap.
“Perfect timing, kiddo,” Tony said as the timer started beeping. He got up and pulled the chicken nuggets out of the oven, serving them up onto a plate. “Ketchup, right?”
“And mayo,” Peter reminded.
“Ugh, that’s right.” Tony pulled the condiments out of the fridge, wrinkling his nose.
“It’s the best way to eat them, Mr. Stark,” Peter insisted as he busied himself mixing the two on his plate until there was a puddle of pink sauce next to his mound of chicken nuggets.
“So you say,” Tony said as he sat down next to the kid. He was happy to watch Peter eat, pleased that Peter seemed to perk up as he did.
After a moment, Peter pushed the plate toward Tony, silently offering. Tony stared at the food for a moment. He couldn’t remember the last time he had something as childish as chicken nuggets, especially the cheap frozen brand that Tony had seen in May’s freezer a couple months ago and purchased in an attempt to stock up on “Peter food.”
Peter was watching him, amused. Finally, Tony shrugged and picked one off the plate. Peter’s barely noticeable smile grew a little bit, and he rotated the plate so that his ketchup-mayonnaise monstrosity was closer to Tony.
“Ugh, fine,” Tony groaned. He dipped the chicken into the sauce and popped it into his mouth, just so that Peter would stop saying “Don’t knock it ‘til you try it, Mr. Stark,” all the time.
It was, actually, really good. Dang it.
“Well?” Peter asked, feigning innocence.
“Yeah, alright, fine,” Tony conceded, rolling his eyes.
Peter beamed at him.
Tony loved that, too.
