In your expert opinion, do you think there’s any deeper reading to interpret from Geralt’s rebound with Essi, and traits she shares with Dandelion? (I know it wasn’t authorial intention in the least, but when he kissed her within 10 minutes of meeting, I got a “she’s a lot like Dandelion, surely she’s safe to embarrass myself with” vibe).

Essi and Dandelion, Poets and Parallels, Ballads and Broken Hearts

Thank you for the ask! I'm on my lunch break from work, but I'm so happy to be answering Witcher book questions again that I'm sneaking off to do this.

Essi is such an interesting character, right? On one hand, she seems to be treated as the 'anti-Yen" by the narrative and the thing that Geralt 'should' want, thereby reinforcing his love for Yen when he *doesn't* fall in love with Essi.

But then there are all the curious parallels and similarities with Dandelion, which also makes it fun to analyze in that way. The list of similarities is long: their profession, personality, looks, their level of talent, and my favorite, their readiness to throw hands on behalf of Geralt of Rivia. And then there is The Ballad.

Ok. I'm going to set authorial intent aside for the moment, because writers write things all the time they don't intend to write. And I think any artist worth their salt should be thrilled that their work is layered and interesting enough to inspire differing interpretations.

That being said, let's get to the fun part.

SPOILERS SPOILERS FOR ESSI'S STORY PLS DON'T READ IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILED.

Profession, personality

Let's look at Essi's introduction! She enters the scene acting just like Dandelion. Both poets are mercilessly insulting one another in their fake-genteel way. (Lots of shade, as well as out and out insults)

Geralt is taken aback, thinking they are fighting, but then they fall on one another embracing and he's like...oh lordt. There's two of them.

"The Witcher was taken aback, but not too greatly. A professional colleague of Dandelion's could not, indeed, differ much from him in terms of predictability."

So we have profession, and personality being very similar. Bards with sharp tongues and ready emotions. Then we have looks!

Looks.

I've done a post on Dandelion's looks here. And Essi is similar! Blonde hair, blue eyes, and beautiful. Same same. Sorry, her eyes are a dark blue whereas Dandelion's are cornflower. Much different so contrast.

Level of talent.

They are both beloved and famous. When Ciri is studying at Nenneke's temple, she has access to both of their books of poetry.

[Ciri] read The Adversities of Loving and Time of the Moon, collections of poems by the famous troubadour Dandelion. She shed tears over the ballads of Essi Daven, subtle, infused with mystery, and collected in a small, beautifully bound volume entitled The Blue Pearl. --Blood of Elves pg 298

And Geralt adores both of their voices. When Essi and Dandelion are singing together, Geralt thinks to himself that they have the most beautiful voices that he has ever heard.

They Stay Ready to Throw Hands for Geralt of Rivia.

The text even classifies Essi and Dandelion together on this. And as I said, it's my favorite part of her character, and not just because I love Geralt. It shows her strength, her strong sense of self, her courage, and her values.

First, she, much in the way that Dandelion does, uses her fame, connections, and higher social standing to protect Geralt. And she throws Dandelion into the mix for good measure to strengthen her threats. So when Duke Agloval threatens to drive Geralt to the border with a whip. Essi reponds.

"...please dont threaten Geralt. It so happens that Dandelion and I have several friends...King Ethain of Cidaris...always says that our ballads aren't just lively music and rhymes, but a way of spreading news...Do you wish, your Grace, to be written into the chronicle of human kind? I can arrange it?" --Sword of Destiny pg 212

And when Geralt turns down Agloval's 'offer' of permanent work killing sea creatures in a permanent war with them, (keeping in mind that the noble has stiffed Geralt twice on payment so far) Agloval invokes Geralt's poverty in a demeaning way.

"Oh how proud," Agloval smiled. "How haughty. You reject offers in a way some kings wouldn't be ashamed of. You give up decent money with the air of a wealthy man after a lavish dinner. Geralt? Did you have lunch today? No? And tomorrow? And the day after? I see little chance, Witcher, very little..."

It is so infuriating. Agloval is saying...who the fuck do you think you are? Someone important? Someone with status?? Someone who is allowed to decide his own ethics for himself?

This is a constant theme. The...know your place. Stop trying to think for yourself. Ethics look stupid on you, because you aren't 'real' enough of a human being to have them. So it is super satisfying when Essi lets loose on him.

"How dare you!" Little Eye cried shrilly. "How dare you speak like that to him Agloval!...How can you be so base?"...

Geralt tries to stop her. He sees little point.

"Stop it Essi," Geralt said. "Stop, Essi, there's no point." "Not true," she said angrily. "These is a point. Someone has to tell it straight to this self-appointed duke....who now thinks he has the right to insult other people."

And she isn't done.

"Yes, Agloval, " Essi continued, clenching her shaking hands into fists. "The opportunity to insult other people amuses and pleases you. You delight in the contempt you can show the Witcher...you should know that the Witcher mocks your attempts and slights., that they do not make the faintest impression on him..."

Then we bring Dandelion back in. Because guess who also feels anger and revulsion when Geralt is treated so contemptuously? Let Essi say it...

"The Witcher doesn't feel what Dandelion and I feel, and we feel revulsion."

That's like...not even half of her unloading on this guy. She is like...you are worth less than Geralt, so jot that down.

Now..

The Ballad

Here is why the ballad matters to me. I think that perhaps even more interesting than how Geralt responds to Essi (interesting though it is) is how Dandelion responds to Essi. Why does he think someone who is almost exactly like him is perfect for Geralt? I mean, he sees himself in her so much that he thinks of her as his sister.

He loves her more than Geralt does I think that is clear. Geralt cares deeply about her. But to Dandelion, she is like his family.

He is put in a shitty position of seeing her distraught and anguished about her feelings for Geralt and Geralt afraid of leading her on or hurting her. Geralt and Essi go back and forth, making it insufferable for Dandelion as a third wheel.

I talked about it here here and here.

Dandelion's response is the subject of controversy in fandom, and there are many valid and differing reader responses. But it seems clear that Dandelion has come to terms with the fact that Geralt and Essi will not be together in love, despite his advice to Geralt. So he suggests they just fuck to get it out of their systems and then everything will be ok. (that's his solution to most things)

So, if he is at ease with that, why the ballad? At the end of the story, Dandelion composes a ballad while Essi and Geralt sleep.

Dandelion, staring into the dying embers, sat much longer, alone, quietly strumming his lute. It began with a few bars, from which an elegant, soothing melody emerged. The lyric suited the melody, and came into being simultaneously with it, the words blending into the music, becoming set in it like insects in translucent, golden lumps of amber. The ballad told of a certain witcher and a certain poet. About how the witcher and the poet met on the seashore, among the crying of seagulls, and how they fell in love at first sight. About how beautiful and powerful was their love. About how nothing - not even death - was able to destroy that love and part them.

Why this romantic song?? About a witcher and poet?

Yes, it could be just for the ballad, for a successful song. The text talks about the real story not being a good one for a ballad.

But there is so much emotion and magic in that scene. What is he thinking? What is he feeling?

Of course you know about what happens next, Essi's heartbreaking end, and Dandelion's crushing grief. She dies of smallpox during an epidemic. Dandelion is there. Did he go as soon as he heard? Was he visiting her expecting some lovely evenings singing around a fire and found her dead?

However it happened, Dandelion does not leave her to die alone. He does not turn tail and leave, avoiding smallpox. He literally carries the cold dead corpse of this woman he loves, who he sees as his sister, in his arms...

...Dandelion had carried her out in his arms between corpses being cremated on funeral pyres and had buried her far from the city, in the forest, alone and peaceful...

He buries her alone with his own hands! Oh how his heart must have shattered. It is moments like that, that you see the deeper, kinder, even (dare I say) noble side of the vain, braggadocios, whorish bard.

It goes on to say that Dandelion could have changed the song at any point to be a true version (the one where Essi dies), but he never did.

Yeah.

To me there is a story about a young girl who cares enough for ten people, who has a huge heart, and a deep soul. A fearless girl who feels things too big for her to handle for a man others call a monster. A girl whose voice is like an angel.

And then there is a story about a broken hearted poet who loved her (far more than Geralt did) and who wrote a song about a witcher and a poet and he never changed the words and never sang it to anyone.

And I wonder if he wasn't writing that ballad about a witcher and a different poet entirely.

thoughts on yuno's abortion and yuno & amane parallels with "purity"

kind of an analysis we did together with pupa @burstvoid, they came up with an assumption that yuno's family might be involved with amane's cult and we started thinking more about connections between them

a thing that arises questions:

yuno does compensated dating and as it seems has quite enough money from it... but where does it go?

Q: The most expensive thing you've ever bought? Yuno: What did I buy? I think a stuffed animal.

the most expensive thing she bought for herself is a stuffed animal, she doesn't seem to really spend the money on herself. then we have that she really loves her family:

Q: What do you think about your family? Yuno: I love them.

Q: Is there someone you want to see right now? Yuno: Hmm. I think my family.

Q: Do you want to get out from MILGRAM? Yuno: Well, I've gotten tired of this place. I'd like to go home soon~.

Q: What would you do if you receive One Million Yen and you must spend right now? Yuno: I'd have a nice meal with my family, then give them to my friends.

Q: If you had one wish, what would you use it for? Yuno: Nothing really. As long as my relatives and friends are happy I'm fine.

so maybe she gives all of it to her family?

we have another known "all the money goes to the family" case in the prison, and this is when the "yuno's family might be involved with amane's cult" thought first appears

so let's see if there are parallels between their morals and their visual imagery!

yuno's abortion

first let's look into yuno's abortion separately

we know that yuno hid the fact she did compensated dating, she mentions it in t2 voice drama,

Yuno: But immoral acts that don’t cause anyone misfortune do exist, right? Just like sugar-daddying: because it’s been deemed ethically wrong, I was hiding it but…

so another question is, how did her abortion even happen? how could she do it without notice? as a minor (japan lowered age of majority from 20 to 18 only in 2022; yuno could be younger than 18 when the abortion happened since we don't know how getting into milgram really works), she would likely need her parents' consent

Views seem to differ concerning whether minors can have abortion without the parents' consent. The law says it's allowed as long as the couple agrees, but some hospitals seem to feel uncomfortable without parents' consent (at least they don't openly say it's OK) if the parties involved as junior/senior high school students, because they might want to hide the fact from their parents and choose any hospital who says it's OK. and japan generally has. a lot of problems with availability of abortion and contraception. both of them cost a lot of money, the ways are quite limited, and doctors prefer to ask for the consent of the woman's partner for the abortion.

about the consent and access in general:

Despite the partner’s consent not being necessary for unmarried women and women who were impregnated by abusive partners or through rape, many doctors and medical institutions seek a signature from the man believed to have made the woman pregnant for fear of getting into legal trouble. temperature control (checking the temperature to see if you're ovulating) — yuno has a lot of cold/warm imagery, so it could be related to her

IUD — it needs a lot of care and recovery, so it's unlikely, even though yuno's songs involve the mention of cable in particular

so what did the girl even do to get her abortion??????? (we don't know)

also pupa assumed that she could have used fake identity in the hospital, so that they don't ask for consent of her parents or the partner

if yuno's family is related to the cult, they'd reject official medicine, so she would have even less access to contraception. we don't have actual evidence on yuno's family being involved with amane's cult aside from all the family stuff, we're just having vague suspicions whether characters in milgram might be connected, but they definitely can be seen as having some parallels.

a holy girl and a corrupted girl! (self-proclaimed)

yuno's and amane's morals

with amane we all know she's very loyal to religious beliefs and protecting morals, but with yuno we have the opposite - she denies anything "holy" to the point you'd think, girl what is your problem with the concept of morals

Q: Do you think God exists? Yuno: No.

Yuno: I said so at the start, didn’t I? That punishing people outside of the law is boundless. And so I had no interest in Milgram.

Yuno: Ah…I don’t have much interest in things like ethics and morals. Doesn’t it not fill your stomach? Yuno: No, but seriously, I do think so…that there are lots of people who think, “I have to protect ethics and morals” and end up constrained and miserable; that they should just live in a more easygoing manner.

Q: Are there people you hate? Yuno: People who like to give lectures.

^ amane's cult loves giving lectures very much...

Yuno: Why are you stammering? [gasp] You’re so pure! Yuno: Ah, yes yes. Well, this is going to be purely—purely—personal opinion but…I find those kinds of assumptions preachy and unpleasant! ^ yuno thinks of herself as unacceptable, she emphasizes that her actions are first and foremost simply "morally unethical". even if she didn't do compensated dating particularly for money or to help herself with any other struggles, it was necessary for her as an act of rebellion - rebelling against "purity".

yuno lives by desires and is in search for entertainment/satisfaction,

amane lives by principles and denies entertainment/satisfaction,

and yuno, who follows her desires, thinks of herself as impure (we will get back to it again later), she thinks of it as committing sins.

both are teached to follow morals and have a religious subtone to it (well, straightforward with amane), but have an entirely opposite reaction to these teachings.

^ conversation between yuno and amane happening at later time can be seen as parallel to the earlier conversation between yuno and mahiru: they both get asked whether they feel like they would rather not be born, and in the second one yuno asks that. did she ask amane because she's religious?

i also found it interesting that amane approaches mahiru and fuuta on her own in t2, but goes "don't sit so close. stay away" to yuno. maybe she could perceive yuno as the opposite to her "holy" morals.

the above conversation also gives us that yuno doesn't believe in destiny and meaning in life... "probably" as she says

’Tis ordained, thou shall follow thine destiny

and she definitely lets herself indulge in "earthly pleasures"

’Tis ordained, thou shall discard vulgarity

such as, compensated dating and the way she's constantly depicted with sweets/sweet drinks

some of these are a stretch because we were just on a mission to find Every Possible Similarity

yuno has a religious chapel door on her cover art, likely supposed to represent love/marriage, but before that it's. religious.

both have a cat motif to them, i recommend this post that goes in-depth on amane's connection to "pet animal" motif, but shortly speaking, amane's parallels with the cat can be seen as her being unfitting to the cult/society which is full of "dogs"; this can apply to yuno too, who doesn't fit into society's understanding of morals.

the start of their t1 mvs:

water motif in t2 mvs: tear drops with yuno and rain/water punishment with amane

both t2 mvs use the switching between monocolored headspace (white for amane, pink for yuno) and greyish-blue real world, but it might seen as something that happens with mvs in general (mahiru uses this too, though she's more purple)

both t2 mvs have several versions of them in the headspace that interact with each other, amane punishes herself and yuno comforts herself

ive said before theyre like rivals 2 lovers in a way because before they get to know each other all of their interactions involve bumping into each other trying to get the same last piece of anime merch somewhere. eventually yuu is curious about choro bc isnt it kind of sus that hes always popping up wherever she does...! but he doesnt seem like a bad guy so she takes a chance and asks him to hang out. really this is rivals to friends to lovers....

they get along surprisingly well!! so one thing leads to another and they end up spending a looooot of time together, the whole time insisting they're totally just friends (osomatsu is especially insufferable about teasing them it makes him sick to see them all over each other but neither wants to make the first move)

after theyve hung out for a while and gotten closer maybe theres a period where shes super busy with work and cant hang out at ALL... just going in to the manga cafe and going home after cos theyre short staffed, dealing w customers all day and cleaning up after them... its making her insane doing clopening shifts over and over. her mind keeps wandering thinking stuff like "wow i am about to EXPLODE i wish i was hanging out at chibitas or at the arcade with c... c... ch...."

she hits a hard stop then and there. once that thought starts trying to finish itself she already knows shes cooked. the realization that shed rather be spending all her free time with choro is a lil terrifying to her bc she hadnt even realized she liked him that much...! this is so world shattering she would look stupid as hell behind the counter head in her hands with new customers walking in asking if shes ok LOL. she thinks for hours about this afterwards and cant sleep once she gets home.

the next day and from then out until she accidentally drunkenly confesses to him she tries so so so hard to keep up appearances but even choro can catch on to something being... off... about the way shes acting. he doesnt wanna get his hopes up bc hed honestly just be happy as her friend. but the way she steals glances at him when she thinks hes not looking..... the way she scoots the closest to him when everyone is eating at chibitas.... the way she puts up with his antics but never really truly looks down on him for being an otaku neet.... he cant help but hope she likes him back

BONUS: choro is the only one who knows Where she works and what exactly it entails (she tells everyone else she just works at a regular bookstore not a manga cafe, she doesnt want most ppl knowing shes an otaku) so it would be very cute and thoughtful if he showed up to her next shift to cheer her up. he goes up to the counter and coughs nervously to get yuu's attention. she looks up to see this guy she KNOWS is unemployed asking nervously to rent a half hour booth for what's probably his last 350 yen. he slides her favorite candy across the counter with his change. they are both exploding inside

ok so. i love the witcher books. i read them a Long time ago and the story has stayed with me all these years + i'm polish so i have this different kind of emotional attachement to it as well. and i reread the books like 10 times already. but my point here is. i really struggle to understand the trajectory of the show. and i know a lot of things have been said about it (esp season 2), and i agree with some stuff and disagree with other (e.g., that black people don't belong in slavic stories. stfu). HOWEVER. something that baffles me more than anything else i think is the way they handled the relationship between jaskier and geralt. rant below :)

cause like. some of the stuff that happens in the show does happen in the books as well. it's not that the relationship is completely different than it was in the og source material. jaskier is kind of an idiot and gets geralt into a lot of trouble. geralt does get upset with jaskier at some point and tells him a few unpleasant things. but like. the entire relationship is different?? the circumstances too? geralt doesn't get upset with jaskier for no reason, and he doesn't berate him for stuff that jaskier isn't guilty of. (in baptism of fire there is a very good reason for geralt to very decidedly tell jaskier that he's being an idiot and it would have been better if geralt "strangled him and threw him in a ditch" like some people suggested he should when they first started travelling together. and even then, in this particular book, geralt is being awful to everyone because he's Going Through Things, but it's never as baseless as in the show, and then he gets called out on it by everyone and changes his behavior. but regardless.) it's like the writers took all of the books and hand-picked the awful moments and behaviors present in their friendship and packed them into the first season (i'm not even gonna discuss season two because it's just not even remotely similar to the books sorry). i mean, geralt would NEVER not on pain of death hurt jaskier physically. the gut punch in the second episode always makes me go "well MY geralt would never". and pretty much the entire show does that as well.

the thing about this relationship and why it is so special in the books is that it provides levity. and i don't just mean that jaskier is the comic relief, i mean that jaskier brings levity into geralt's life. he's the one person who sees geralt as just human and who does not have any expectations for him (unlike yennefer, ciri, etc, all of them in different ways and for different reasons). jaskier condemns geralt's attitute towards himself multiple times (ie makes geralt understand that he isn't different and alienated from humanity by default, that he keeps expecting people to see the worst in him and treat him as some sort of exotic freak and not a person, which isn't true), allowing him to just be himself. they have fun together. like they're absolute idiots sharing one braincell sometimes and it's good!! it's fun!! he's geralt's best friend. that's literally how he's first introduced, before we even see him in the scene; nenneke tells geralt that jaskier's there to see him and asks if geralt wants to, and geralt literally says "of course, he's my friend, after all". and when nenneke tells him she doesn't understand this friendship because they're each others' complete opposites, geralt tells her "opposites attract". and that's that. none of the weird shit the show tries to pull with geralt refusing to call jaskier his friend because....? idk why actually.

their relationship is a constant. geralt and yen have issues all of the time; geralt avoids ciri for a while as well, but jaskier is someone he's always happy to see (there are actually many points in the books where geralt just sees a feather that jaskier wears on his hat or hears a "familiar peal of laughter" and immediately knows it's jaskier and always welcomes the bard into his company). and yeah, jaskier does drive geralt crazy because he's annoying and extravagant and kind of an idiot, but it's always met with something more akin to fond exasperation than with the cold annoyance that we get in the show.

in the books, they sleep in the same bed multiple times. they share physical contact. they save each other multiple times (jaskier stays in dangerous situations just because he doesn't want to leave geralt and instead tries to help him and geralt once calls jaskier crazy for thinking that he could ever leave jaskier in danger). in the last wish, after the djinn, geralt learns that jaskier will not be able to sing, but that he'll survive and be able to talk, and STILL geralt sits down in a corner resting his face on closed fists. and then says that he'd sit his bare ass on a scorpion if it meant that jaskier would be okay. and THEN keeps negotiating with yen so that jaskier is completely unharmed. meanwhile in the show we get a mere "yeah we won't let that happen" when jaskier is DYING. and in the lady of the lake, as they say goodbye, geralt says "daj pyska, stary durniu" which literally translates to "give me your face/mouth, old fool" and is used as an invitation to kiss someone platonically. can you imagine show geralt asking jaskier to kiss him? neither can i.

idk it's just so weird to me that they keep saying how "male friendship is so important blah blah" while making their relationship more of a one sided romance on jaskier's part, when they have SO much material in the books. and i'm bitter lmao

-two friends one a ravenclaw and one a gryffindor . No one would ever expect these two polar opposites to be the best of friends but after a late night chat in the library will they be anything more?

(Also there might be typos so sorry abt that)

Ravenclaws are known to be the smartest of them all but not yn. Surprisingly they haven’t been getting the best grades lately so they’ll always sneak to the library in the middle of the night just to get away from everyone and study. Now everyday when her and George had a class together he noticed how tired they always were and he was starting to get worried. He didn’t want his friend getting another detention from professor snape for falling asleep in class again so during lunch when there other ravenckaw friends finally left them alone he went up and asked them. “ Hey yn, are your feeling ok? You’ve been looking tired recently”. Yn tried to stay as calm as possible from being cranky from staying up all not studying so in the nicest way possible they could they said. “ I’m fine Weasley mind your own business”. Yn wanted to take it back but they were just so tired. After a while of silence and whispers saying “is the lion finally going to eat the bird?” Or “ we all expected this to happen a gryffindor and raven claw just don’t mix well together”. Then George just looked hurt and walked away. Yn knew George could be sensitive at times and never wanted the name Weasley disrespected but they just couldn’t help it.Yn did feel bad though. How could they just say something like that to there Bestfriend in the world that they kinda had a crush on. But no after what yn just said George would never look at them the same again.The next couple of days George ignored Yn because he needed to cool down but yn didn’t care much they knew they had there reasons for telling him off as well but it was starting to get lonely. One day after a test ravenclaw failed they were feeling low and wanted to just lie down in the library and read a book. As they were going in they noticed a tall ginger looking for a book. My knew exactly who it was but tried to avoid him until they found a spot in the corner of the library and as they were reading the book yn heard a chair being pulled. They looked up to see George want to sit near the corner yn was in. Yn didn’t mind but what got on there nerves is that George was reading out loud. After a while yn got really annoyed and got up to walk away not wanting to deal with him right now until they felt a hand grab there arm and found themselves facing George and hun asking for yn not to leave. Yen grabbed a chair to sit by George and after a minute of slience yn asked. “ are you mad at me?”. George responded with “ how could I ever be mad at my favorite person in the world?”. Yn looked puzzled as George chuckled to himself. “ why have you been ignoring me then?” Yn asked trying to the embarrassment on there face from thing George was mad at them this whole time. “ I was a bit upset when you told me to leave but I knew you needed to cool down so I gave you some space but it was sad not being able to see your pretty face everyday anymore” George said. Yn blushed to what he said hoping George felt just a little bit of the same way they felt towards him. To break the silence George finally looked up at yn and said “ listen Yn I don’t care about what other people say about our friendship but I care for you deeply and as little bit of more as a friend to. I have to go though but please feel better” then he gave her a quick peck on the check and left. Yn was stunned and happy to know her little crush felt the same way.

I know that the ending was similar to the last story I tried to make it different but this was the best I’m ending I could come up with that actually made sense to the summary but I hoped you enjoyed and have a good morning/ night:)

I love reading your book analysis and headcanons on the Hansa + Ciri & Yen! I also adore your characterization of the characters when you tag them on silly videos or posts, it’s like one of those YouTube “Witcher Characters as Vines/TikToks” videos but hilariously accurate to the point they’ve gotten me to laugh out loud! Since you like to analyze the books in their entirety, I was wondering if there is any art you’ve seen of the characters that you feel fits their descriptions to a tee. What are the artists that have made you immediately think, “That’s x!”. This is quite nit-picky of me but my common pet peeves on the depictions are, conveniently attractive Geralt and Yen, erasure of Ciri’s brutal scar, conveniently feminine Milva, and Dandelion not being drawn as the pretty boy bastard he is. I feel like from reading your blog you probably have these pet peeves as well, so I’m interested in seeing your favorite art of Hansa + Ciri & Yen. (Sorry for the rambling! ❤️)

thank you for such a wonderful ask!! what a nice thing to wake up to :) i'm so glad you enjoy the posts / blog content even when it's just reblogs of silly posts/vids/memes tagged as characters. i realized one day that that was a majority of what i posted, and i became self-conscious that for a witcher blog, i don't actually post much witcher... so i'm glad those reblogs are hitting the mark!

i also think you read my mind, anon, because i was just thinking last night that witcher book artists deserve more promotion.

i too share these pet peeves. i'll keep this post positive and about appreciations, but i'll actually make a sister post to this one where i talk about my personal preferences and annoyances when seeing fanart of the characters, and i'll link that post to this one. probably do it on burnfalka since that's my complaining sideblog :') (edit: link to post is here)

though here are some disclaimers for anyone reading:

this will be a very biased list, because anon has asked for my personal preferences of how i imagine the characters, i believe the point of this is that. i generally base my headcanons upon the canon (e.g., yennefer has a long nose and recessed chin), but i also have personal convictions (e.g., milva is butch, in the modern lesbian sense of the word). because of this, i also will be noting when details of the pieces directly contradict canon descriptions, but i don't intend this as criticism towards the artist, just as a note to anyone reading so they don't get confused on what's "canon".

these are the pieces to which i instinctly reacted like "omg! that's THEM!", but that doesn't mean that this is the only witcher art that makes me happy to see. i happen to also like witcher art that doesn't depict the characters looking exactly like i personally headcanon them to look. similarly, i'm not including all the witcher artists i like, even if they're my most favorite artists, because a handful of them do not fit the prompt (i.e., depict the characters as i picture them).

what i love about astro as an artist: their skill comes from a lot of practice and many different iterations, i get the sense that their goal is always to explore many different possibilities of what a character or a scene could look like. they're very meticulous and dedicated and i think there's a lot of overlap between what makes their art great and what makes their translations great, there's a lot of depth and research behind the gorgeous art, a painting is never just a painting. i especially appreciate how their personal favorites shine through their art, yennefer and geralt being parents to ciri and their love of the short stories. i really like how they draw yennefer because they humanize her in this way that i think is often forgotten by the fandom, the way they depict her incorporates her motherhood to enhance her overall character identity.

what i love about ern as an artist: his style reminds me of a dream or a storybook, and i love how (to me) even the sketches feel like finished pieces. he always hits on key moments between characters, representing the emotionality of scenes so well through character expressions, character design, and choice of color. everything feels light and beautiful, but also intentional and running with a deep passion. he also includes a lot of comedy or comedic scenes in his witcher art which always makes me smile. it feels like the characters as he draws them naturally want to interact with one another like they do in the books. i especially appreciate how he draws dandelion, geralt, and zoltan because i think he has nailed their designs, he somehow captures that energy of dandelion like the rippling laughter and strum of a lute.

also it's worth mentioning that both of these artists are just very nice, funny, congenial people who i've had the pleasure to talk with <3 kind of weird to give them such formal professional appreciations haha but you guys know ily ;w;

what i love about this art: geralt's sharp angular features, his pointy nose and chin, paled face, headband holding back long, scraggly tangled strands of hair, his dark leather jacket. dandelion's blonde hair, the shape and color of his plum little hat, his lace collar, his jacket matching his hat and the outfit looking coordinated and setting-appropriate while also not drawing away too much visual intrigue from the rest of the piece, his lute having a strap to be slung over his shoulder, the proportionality of the neck of his lute.

other notes: i love the sunny, airy atmosphere of this piece, it reminds me so much of edge of the world. and i love geralt's calmed expression, closed lips while dandelion talks or sings on. it's so representative of their dynamic and the place to which dandelion brings geralt emotionally and spiritually, a grand representation of friendship...

what i love about this art: the length and volume of her hair, the volume of her sleeves, the design of her dress, the framing of how the poofy hair matches the poofy sleeves matches the poofy cloud! i like her casting magic in a fun and whimsical way, but it also represents her power as a sorceress. i also appreciate the smile on her face being more mischevious / amused than anything else, it adds a layer of humanity to her.

other notes: the limited color palette not only contributes to it being a pleasing artistic piece to look at, but reflects yennefer's own style of dress. a pet peeve i have about yennefer art, which this art does not fall into but instead is a great example which others should follow in my opinion, is that in a majority of yennefer art, the colors (usually a lilac, purple, or pink) are oversaturated and cease to depict yennefer for that reason. this piece uses a really tasteful and masterful use of color in regards to yennefer's character. it incorporates these shades of lilac through lighting/shading, but accurately depicts that she only ever wears black and white.

other notes: i know ciri doesn't have long, white hair, but i don't think this is a 'breach of canon' because there is a necessary degree of artistic license (like the color scheme is white, not ashen-blonde), and i interpret this detail figuratively - long, clean hair as a symbol of purity and girlhood, parallel to the blood that now runs down her face. it's a highly artistic piece with this level of symbolism and for that reason i love it more.

drawingllamas: I read The Tower of the Swallow some time ago and I really wanted to draw Ciri riding her horse in the winter storm

i’m curious about tracked tag etiquette. how do you pick what tag to track, and make sure no one else is already using it? is there a particular size blog you have to be in order to start tracking a tag? and i guess most importantly, what makes gifmakers decide to want to tag you in things?

i guess what you track is totally up to you! it used to be that your url was your default tag (and i'd still consider that as a good one if you really don't know what to track, because it's unlikely to be taken), but people have turned to user tags more a constant for url changes, or if you have a hyphened url (because hyphens don't work in the search function, for example 'yen-vengerberg' would just be searched as 'yen vengerberg' and people use that as a tag for the character, which would be annoying if it was your tracked tag). ultimately, you can pick anything that feels right to you! you can go into the tag and usually it's fairly obvious if it's being actively used, if there are a) posts in it and b) the date of these posts are recent. for example, my tag was used before me, but the person left tumblr and i checked the tag for a while to make sure it wasn't in use anymore. it tends to be fairly obvious if a tag is in use just based on the latest date of the posts within it, though!

you can be any size you want, you just need people who will tag you in order to keep the tag active, i think that's probably the more difficult thing if you're just starting off. for me, i like to tag mutuals who i know are interested in the fandom i am posting and often have created for it themselves. often i'll remember who has tagged me in things and tag them back, because i remember they liked the thing, so that's a good way to get gifmakers to think of you sometimes. some people make a post saying they track 'x tag' and list the fandoms/characters/ships you can tag them in, that can be quite a good way of encouraging others to tag you. i think you just have to put yourself out there a bit! a lot of us content creators aren't sure who to tag and if they're ok with it, so just showing enthusiasm for being tagged and for the things you're tagged in can help encourage people to tag you more.

Hi 😊 I really like your posts, especially the ones where you analyse the books 🤩 I have a suggestion: Geralt flirting ❤️ yesterday I found a post (I think it was by darkverrmin, not sure) saying something like: of course Geralt knows how to flirt, he's a 100 years old 🤣 Later someone added the scene between Geralt and Yennefer on Skellige as evidence ("you smell lovely" etc). It got me wondering how it is in the book canon... Maybe you can answer that 😉

I hope people don't ever take it as an indication that I don't want to answer. I LOVE getting asks. I just put so much time and effort and research into them sometimes I have to leave time aside, reread, have a certain type of energy, etc. But I do get to them. So always send them.

So, Geralt flirting.

One thing I love about very old, mortal, and near immortal characters, is their very human flaws. When an Ancient is awkward, immature, or insecure, I don’t know, it scratches some kind of itch in me.

It says, it’s ok if you don’t have it all figured out (even though you thought you’d be fully formed and mature by the time you reach adulthood) this guy’s been here for centuries, and he’s still a dork.

It says, flaws are not something to grow out of. They are just seasoning.

It says, we are all human and have frailties, every single one of us, no exception. (even non human characters are stories about what it is to be a human) It is comforting, you know?

I used to watch the tv show Angel, and the parts where he and Spike fought like children brought me a lot of joy. Or on Doctor Who when you see this basically immortal almost millenia old failing at creating a catchphrase or being socially awkward, it makes me happy.

What I’m saying is, the only good immortal character is one with weaknesses that you would really think they would have matured past by now. So, I would say that Geralt’s age doesn’t necessarily mean that he is good at flirting.

In fact, the man is OFTEN awkward. Another great character trait is someone who can be drastically, drastically different things in different situations. Geralt is incredibly eloquent. He is terrifying when he wants to be. But then he can get in front of Yen and just be reduced to absolute buffoonery.

So, can Geralt flirt?

Well, first, to be fair, he almost never needs to flirt. Almost every single one of Geralt’s liaisons are initiated by the women. Women are entranced by his noble character, and his slight whiff of emotionally unavailability.

He doesn’t actually do much of anything flirtatious at all in order to get laid. It’s like his weapons are: 1) Be heroic 2) Toss in a teensy bit of gentle snark 3) Open his arms as they fall into them and 4) Unless it’s Yen, and he actually cares, in which case he’ll be fuckn awkward and hem and haw around, sniff her hair, stare at her boobs, call her 'dear friend' and never live it down.

So, I don’t know. Can he flirt? Maybe if people would stop throwing ass at him and make him work for it, he could? But he never seems to have to! And his age certainly doesn’t keep him from being awkward as hell with Yennyboo.

And actually I love him for that.

The Devil Is a Part-Timer!. Vol. 21

I suppose, if you know that what you’re writing is going to be an anticlimax, it’s best to just admit it straight up front. The massive battle against heaven, even from the start of the volume, is very underplayed, and when it comes, while there is some combat, it ends fairly easily for the good guys. In fact, the final battle is so anticlimactic that the book jumps back and forth between the “present” and three years into the future, showing us where Maou is now and what the rest of the cast are up to, while also teasing his romantic relationship. That said, here it’s made explicit WHY Maou has been hemming and hawing and putting off giving a clear yes or no to anyone’s confession: his demon side is literally allergic to love and causes him to feel extremely ill. Not exactly an original idea, but hey. All in all, it’s an OK ending to a series that should have ended a dozen books ago.

Fortunately for the reader who has been feeling a bit Chiho’ed out by the last couple of books, she’s not present for the War Against Heaven, though we do get Maou and company explaining everything to her parents. A lot of the book features scenes of the cast waiting for heaven to respond to their obvious aggression, and being somewhat disturbed that they are not doing so. And then there is the newest Sepirah child, there to signify the direction that all of heaven will take going forward… so it’s a bit of a shame that he looks like an exact copy of Urushihara, to the point where Maou dubs him Copyhara. There is also quite a lot of backstory and explanations are given for most of the supernatural end of things, but I’m going to be honest, I’ve never really paid attention to that part.

If that summary sounds vague, so does the whole book. The epilogue bits are a bit more interesting. There is a romantic pairing that caused me great pain to read about (no, not Maou’s), but I suppose as long as they’re happy. Speaking of Maou, and spoiling a bit here, yes, he’s together with Chiho, but she’s also trying to consider their future as a group. The problem is that a) thanks to Alas Ramus, he’s never going to be able to be far from Emi for the rest of his life (which, by the way, is a normal human lifespan now, because plot), and b) Emi clearly has some feelings for Maou, and is clearly never going to end up with another guy. Chiho proposing a poly relationship is… I’m gonna be honest, it feels like a fanfic solution. Even Maou is baffled by it, though given how Chiho and Emi run roughshod over his life in general, I guess he’ll accept it. Still, I can’t see the fanbase enjoying this.

Again, aside perhaps for that last part, this book isn’t too bad. But it’s a classic example of an author dragging out a story that should have ended around Book 7 or 8. In the end, it risked drowning under all of its own lore, and didn’t really give the fans the romance their wanted either.

Chapter 28: Shooting Stars

It was the day of the festival, and the outfit Chichi made me was so cool. I even like the stars, and that hers looked just like mine. When we got to the festival it was crowded with lots of people and smells. There was lots of games, and yummy food. Some of the games had prizes, and Chichi would get so excited if she saw something she wanted. I would win them for her, and she would give a huge smile every time.

As she went to get us some popcorn, I spotted something interesting. It was a booth that had a stack of cups. But that wasn’t what caught my interest, what did was the prizes were jewelry. Maybe Chichi would like one. Chichi still wasn’t back from the popcorn line; this shouldn’t take that much time. I’ll be right back. Where you going? It’s a surprise.

I walked up to the booth and asked about the game. The guy said it was very simple, he had a mischievous grin. I had to take these small balls and try to break the glass cups. He then said, if I could break the gold one on the top, there will be a special prize. I agreed and paid the 54 yen, for the 4 shots, and took a good swing.

Ok where did Goku go? He said he’ll be right back. Just as I turned around, I saw him walking towards me, and he had his hands behind his back. He also seem to be heavily blushing. What is he hiding? When he got up to me, he had a huge smile. “Close your eyes.” I did, and waited patiently. “Ok, open.” What I saw left me breathless. It was the most beautiful set of crystal flower hair combs. I couldn’t help the tears starting to fall.

“They’re absolute gorgeous.” I could feel him wiping tears from my face. “Let’s find somewhere we could sit, and you help me put one on.” He nodded, and we laughed as we went through the crowd. The rest of the festival was fun, and we slept in dad’s castle for the night. We had breakfast with dad before heading home. I was still giddy Goku won me these combs. I’ll wear them for special occasions; they were just too pretty to wear every day. I even put them on the top of my jewelry box. It made me smile every time I saw them.

That remind me, daddy gave me the baskets, we use to used when I was a child, for going on picnics. Maybe me and Goku could go on a picnic tonight, and watch the stars. News did say there’ll be shooting stars tonight. It would be so nice to see them with Goku.

As we walked to the lake, before the sun set, Goku and I talked. “Goku?” He looked at me. “Have you ever heard the fairy tale of shooting stars?” He shook his head. “It went that a little girl was very unhappy. One day she saw a shooting star in the sky. She made a wish on it. She wish with all her little heart that her daddy would come home. Come morning her wish came true. She was so happy.” Goku looked in awe. “Every time there were shootings stars, I kept wishing that you would return for me. I thought I was being silly for believing a fairy tale. But every time, I saw you the next day. The night before I left for the tournament there were shooting stars again. And I made a wish with all my heart.”

I felt him grabbing my hand. “So, did your wish came true?” He had a smile, and I couldn’t help smile back.

“Yeah.” He then gave me the smile that would make any star jealous. We then made it to one of the meadows. This one looked over a beautiful sea of wild flowers. I started to set the blanket, and Goku helped me set up the food. We watched as the sun set in comfortable silence.

Then the stars came out, and I spotted a shooting star. I quickly closed my eyes and started to make a wish. “What did you wish for?”

“Silly. You can’t tell what you wish for. That’s only for the stars to know.” We began to giggle. Then more stars started flying, and I saw Goku was making a wish. It made me so happy.

I wish forever and ever be happy with Chichi. I wish I could tell grandpa how happy I am. And most importantly, I wish with all my might that Chichi’s wishes all come true. My Chichi deserves all her wishes to come true. When I finally opened my eyes, I felt a sense of joy come over me.

I then looked at Chichi, and she was smiling at me. We had long ago finished the food, but we thought we would stay out longer, to enjoy the shooting stars. Something about them were just magical. That’s when I hear her say something, and pointing. “What a pretty moon?” I then looked to where she was pointing to, and there it was. The full moon. It shrine so brightly that made everything even more magical. Then I felt a strange rush of energy, I then looked over at Chichi. “Goku?”

“Goku?” He’s giving me that look again. He then pulled me on to his lap, and wrapped his arms around me. He starts to lick my neck. “Goku, is everything ok?”

“Everything is fine. Are you comfortable?” I nodded. He purred as he trailed kisses up and down my neck, even onto my shoulders. I was starting to be happy I choose to wear a sun dress. But it did leave me a bit cold. “Are you cold? Do you want me to warm you up?” I felt him smirking against my sink.

I felt a hand travel up the inside of my thigh to my core, while another hand cupped my right breast. He was being very gentle with his touches. I kissed her forehead. “Wake up, Chichi.” She just snuggled closer. I then felt a hand pressing my tail stub. Well, someone in the mood, and she hasn’t opened her eyes yet.

I went and hugged dad, and made my way to set up tea; just to realize that someone had already set it. I looked to dad, and he shook his head. Then Goku walked over to me. “Chichi, sit down.” I smiled and sat down across from dad.

Goku wouldn’t let me do anything. When I tried to stand up, to get the tea, he made me sit back down. Dad thought this was all funny, he was laughing the whole time. Once dad left, Goku picked me up and brought me back to the room. “Goku! What’s the matter?”

“Just rest. Ok, Chichi.” I was pouting. Why should I? “So, you have plenty of energy, and not sore?” Um. “I thought so. Unless, you want to prove me wrong.” I tried telling him I’m fine, for him to lick his lips. “Ok.” And we ended up fooling around another full day.

Also I was literally 14 and klk and oreimo premiered the same summer season and i watched them back to back bc they both aired new episodes on saturdays and i had a crunchyroll sub at the time), sachi iro one room, happy sugar life, killing stalking (ok look i was in it for the psychological horror thriller. but the way that others in the fandom and even the lezhin company advertised it as some *eDgY rOmAnCe* uwu made even me be like. have critical thinking skills and/or get help lmao, this is not what the author intended at all??? so i kinda distanced myself from it bc the other fans were so embarrassing. plus i didnt want to give lezhin money after this controversy that they blacklisted or sabotaged/didnt advertise lgbt+ webcomics and authors in s korea. only koogi got out unscathed bc ks was so popular so the company couldn't do anything to her publicly or pull the ks web advertisements that they already paid for but smaller authors got affected so iirc koogi tweeted about it), king maker (part of the above lezhin issue that particular summer and part just lezhin only localized the first season and they never did the second season?? i think the 2nd season english translation rights went to another webcomic site but idk what it was), etc.

anyways I’m happy and surprised that sugar apple fairy tale is getting an anime. It was def obscure in the US, with only the first two of the light novels fan translated until the fan group’s raws provider got tired and quit to focus on his job or family or something?? Idk, good for him I guess?? Anyways, the group basically went on hiatus or broke up afterwards on that series and so I got the first three raw light novels via rakuten kobo ePub for the purpose of language learning with the translation and raw side by side reading. I didn’t get very far due to my language level being. Absolutely abysmal. But I did like it and was very sad to see that the group only did the first two chapters of the third novel before quitting. I’m happy that the anime is out and plan to watch it and also yen press picked up the rights for the books so I’ll definitely buy it legally now instead of. Poor Google translate and guessing of how to interpret sentences. Lol. Yen press is already on the third one, so I’ll buy the ePub when I get home probably and they have the fourth release scheduled for September 2023 I think. Yay.
