Just saw people clutching their pearls in a comment section over a crowd clapping during the eclipse, because it meant they were "worshipping demons" and "didn't know what was going to happen after." When nothing happens, will their faith be shaken? Will they question the faith leaders that assured you they knew the future? Will they question their ability to interpret scripture? In my experience, the answers are no for most people.
I grew up around conspiracy theorist Christians. My dad was a 9/11 truther. Bigfoot was real and he was a demon. The government was hiding aliens from us. And blood moons and eclipses were signs of coming judgment and destruction. There was a blood moon several years ago where he stocked up, started doing some doomsday prepping for the family. He told us all what he thought was coming. The night it happened, I lay awake in bed, my father's fear washing over me in waves, waiting for my phone to die, because my dad believed an EMP was going to knock out the power grid in the United States and all our electronics. There was a moment when my phone went dark for a second unexpectedly, and I was frozen in my fear over what the future held. Thankfully the moment didn't last long, since my touch lit my phone screen, and that's one of a handful of moments when I realized just how deep my father's fears and conspiratorial thinking had sunk into my brain, even when only given attention in passing.
When I got my first shot of the covid vaccine, even though I wanted the shot, believed in it as our best tool for fighting the virus, even though I spent hours researching and debunking my parents' vaccine conspiracies, as the needle was going into my arm, I still had their fear in the back of my mind. What if this hurts me? What if this kills me? What if I'm wrong and they're really right? I would've told anyone at the time that my parents had fallen down a rabbit hole filled with bullshit. To them the vaccine was a bio attack from China or a way for the government to track us or more deadly than the virus or causing heart attacks in men or actually spreading the virus or entirely ineffective (on and on it went). And yet even though I KNEW there was no truth to prop up their claims, I still was afraid when I went to get the shot.
All this to say it's important to combat conspiratorial thinking when you run into it. Yes, the Christians really just look like fools when they say the eclipse is demon worship, but there are people who are living with tremendous and unnecessary fear because of these conspiracies. And depending on what it is, it may prevent them from taking actions that could save their lives and the lives of others. And know that the fear can wheedle its way into your brain even if you think they're wrong, even if you work really really hard to demonstrate that there's nothing to be afraid of.

YANDERE BATBOYS WITH A READER WHO HAS FICTIONAL CRUSHES
Tumblr media
Honestly I wouldn't put it past them to explode with rage and jealousy and act like clingy petty children to you
Tumblr media
Dick Grayson: If there's one thing he feels proud of in life is the amount of love he has for you. He feels like no one else can love you like him and he knows you better than you know yourself. Thr first time he finds out that you really like a fictional character was when you both were having a movie night with the other Titans as a day for rest and relaxation since you guys need some chill in life. The movie you guys were watching was Rapunzel and you really liked the movie. You told Dick that you've wanted to grow your hair as long as Rapunzel when you were a kid and he pretended not to know about it but in fact he already did know about it since this sneaky son of a bish here already read your diary that mentioned it. He feels like there should be no secrets between the two of you since you're destined to be with each other and you're soulmates and one person. He knew you liked Rapunzel which was why he made the suggestion of watching it that day but what he wasn't prepared for was when you suddenly said "Damn Flynn be looking good" and he suddenly felt his heart skip a beat. What exactly did you mean by that comment? Garfield turned to you and spoke "Wait don't tell me you have a crush on him?"as he grinned in amusement as you shrugged your shoulders and replied "Believe it or not he was one of my childhood crushes" and Dick felt his hand twitch with irritation. ONE of your childhood crushes? So that clearly meant that there were more and he was determined to find out who the bloody hell were these pathetic sneaky pests who dared to steal the heart of his lovely angel when it was clearly reserved for him
"How about we watch something else?"said Dick as his eye twitched with irritation but you didn't want to change the movie so he ended up tolerating the damn movie for the next 2 hours for the sake of your happiness. But he swears to get rid of that bloody movie and make you forget about that damned Flynn Ryder because the only man you should be thinking about is him
Jason Todd: He doesn't become delusional and descend down the rabbit hole of madness and chasm of obsession right off the bat yet. There's still time for him to become delusional as hell and it all started when he first met you as Red Hood when he was patrolling the streets around Gotham. It was really late at night and you were coming back from the public library after doing some research for your Physics paper in college that would count for at least 50 percent of your grade. You really needed to work hard and up your game since your Physics professor was a hardass and had no chill in life whatsoever and you didn't want to flunk out of the class. You'd just gotten a headache after studying so much and you were looking forward to relaxing after you went home. You kept walking when suddenly you stopped in the middle of the road to rub your head for a few minutes and your eyes since your vision was starting to get blurred but that was a huge mistake on your part because a car was moving with a really high speed and the driver was honking at you to get out of the way. You'd have been literal roadkill had it not been for the Red Hood himself who pulled you out of harm's way. "W-whats going on?"you mumbled as he chuckled and replied "You're so tired you didn't even realize your life was in danger" and he offered to drop you off home since it was evident that you couldn't be trusted in such a condition. He made sure you were safe in your bed and felt bad when he saw you with no one else in your house. Was that why you weren't taking care of yourself properly and not sleeping early? Jason made sure you went to sleep and he wrote a note for you that said 'Take better care of yourself darling' and placed it near your bed table. The next morning when you woke up you saw the note and you smiled, it felt nice to have someone care for you
You were hoping to meet the Red Hood again the next day evening and sure enough you were lucky since you did end up meeting him. "I have a box of muffins with me that I made. Would you like some? You know, a way of saying a thank you from my side for saving me yesterday" and he was stunned. After all these years of protecting and looking after Gotham you were the first person who actually thanked him for his deeds. He felt happy since a really long time as he accepted it and thanked you for it. The next day you met Jason at the library but not as Red Hood, as regular Jason though and you both bonded over the books there. He offered to help you with some stories you were working on and he was like your second pair of eyes offering you constructive feedback of your works and he loved reading every line and word you've written
The two of you bonded over a period of time and you decided to have a movie night one day after your college's term finished. You invited Jason over and you already had snacks and drinks ready. Jason was just glad you didn't invite any of your pesky little friends over he despised them from the bottom of his heart. To him they were nothing but corrupt leeches who wanted to ruin you while he was protecting you from all the negative and bad things in the world. You didn't need to know all the dark stuff happening around you, and you can also thank him for the cancelation of your newspaper subscription. Who needs the news anyway, it's filled with utter nonsense and garbage these days anyway according to him
You both watched some movies and then this show called Supernatural popped up on your recommended list so you both decided to watch that. Jason actually liked Dean Winchester he thought he was cool and he could actually relate to his problems in a way. At first when you started gushing about Dean Winchester he didn't seem to mind. It was just a little fictional crush but when you told him that you had all the merchandise of his and you even had a freaking body pillow of Dean that's when things took another turn. Jason couldn't help but feel jealous and he knows it's silly being jealous of a fictional character but he can't help it. As selfish as he is, he wants you to think of him, the only man you'll ever need in your life. When Jason sees your body pillow of Dean Winchester his hand twitched with irritation and made a mental note to burn it to ash when you weren't noticing. He doesn't like it when you ignore him for your fictional characters, just pay him some attention as well and you're good to go but if you keep gushing about those fictional crushes of yours he might have to step in and when he does you'll have to say goodbye to your movie watching marathons
Tim Drake: I can imagine Tim actually vibing with you and your fictional characters that you're so fond of especially if they're anime characters. He really loves anime. You guys met online on Discord in an anime server when some random bozo was saying stuff like how Eren Yeager sucked in season 4 but you had a different take to that opinion and when you put forth your opinion you revived some major hate and backlash from that person calling you a dumb person and a bunch of other nasty names that made you feel pissed off. Fortunately for you, someone came to your defense and that someone was none other than Tim Drake himself. He called him out for behaving like a douchebag and basically started an internet flame war with that person. Then you thanked him for sticking up for you and you both chatted with each other for a while at a private chat room till you had to get going but you felt happy that you'd gained a new online friend. You both chatted with each other for a few weeks and you were ecstatic when you'd learnt that he went to the same school as you, Gotham academy and you were determined to meet him so you arranged for the two of you to meet at the music room of Gotham Academy too which he'd agreed
Truth was, Tim already knew who you were right off the bat without your knowledge. There's a reason he's called a whiz with technology you know. He was just keeping his identity anonymous to humor you and wanted to see your reaction when the guy sitting right next to you during your Advanced Calculus class was your online friend. You waited for your online friend to show up and sure enough he did and it was none other than Tim himself. Your eyes widened with surprise and you spoke "Tim, I can't believe you're the one I was talking to this whole time, this is amazing" you smiled and he felt glad you saw this as a positive scenario. The two of you had your lunch together and started spending more time with each other in person. The thing about Tim is that when he falls in love with someone, he falls in love really fast and hard. He loves someone with a lot of intensity and passion, words nor numbers couldn't describe the feelings he felt for you. He was also someone who believed in love at first sight and when he found out that you were his online friend from Discord he was extremely thrilled and his joy knew no bounds. Of course he had to keep you a secret from his brothers since they'd tease him and they'd try to flirt with you and steal you away from him which is something he doesn't want happening at all
He's so used to being the replacement in his life but for once he wanted to be selfish and have you for himself. He was growing obsessive over you and his affection for you might be deemed as suffocating for other people but you failed to notice the red flags in his behavior like him being clingy to you when you talked to someone else and when you you him about the guy who flirted with you during your biology lecture he got suspended for the possession of drugs that Tim may or may not have planted in his locker and anonymously tipped off a teacher. He was just trying to keep you safe in this dark and cruel world, and he should know how bad the world is because he's Red Robin
Your exams were done and you'd decided to have an anime marathon with him and he invited you over to the Wayne manor. Of course Dick, Jason and Damian were cocky when you'd shown up and started flirting with you just to tease and rile up Tim because watching him getting riled up was the amusement of the century according to them. Tim's face grew red and he 'accidentally' spilled some water on Dick and Jason as he stepped on Damian's foot and he dragged you inside to his room and shut the door. He could hear them snickering to themselves as Jason howled "Use protection" as he just rolled his eyes and you looked confused. "They're immature jerks, so should we get started?'' and you nodded as you watched animes like My hero academia, Haikyuu, Demon slayer, Bungou Stray dogs and many more. You wanted to watch Kakegurui as well but Tim didn't want you to taint your innocence and it was filled with some not so wholesome content according to him that wasn't suitable for your delicate eyes
You had some favorite characters from different Fandoms and the character you were really fond of was Daisuke Kanbe from the anime Millionaire detective balance unlimited. Tim could get why you liked Daisuke a lot and he vibes with your choice too. He will however get a tad bit jealous that you're not paying attention to him and he'll do something or the other to interrupt your anime fest and make sure you pay attention to him. Other than that he's actually pretty chill with you crushing over animme characters but like every other possessive yandere dude he will have to curb it and make you forget about your anime crushes if it gets too out of hand. He doesn't want to lose you to some Pixelated non existant 2D picture on a screen
BONUS: Damian Wayne: Oh boy, I can say for sure he won't be too happy about this whole ordeal of you simping for non existant Pixelated fiends according to him when you have THE heir of the Wayne family and the Al Ghul heir himself. It's been a few months since he's kidnapped you and taken you for himself and he had to do it you know. The first time he met you was when you were about to climb a huge rock ready to dive in because a puppy was drowning. As much as he was touched with your love and concern for animals he couldn't let you just endanger your life like that which was why he had to step in and do something before you'd ended up getting hurt. Damian raced to where you were about to jump and pulled you back in time and before you could say a word he dove in and rescued the puppy. The poor puppy had a bleeding paw and you let a soft gasp of despair when you saw its bleeding paw
You really loved animals and that sight just broke your heart. "I have a feeling someone must have done this to the poor thing, why else would a puppy intentionally go to the middle of the river if it doesn't know how to swim?" you asked Damian as you snuggled the little thing against you, the puppy grateful for the warmth it was receiving from you. "Take care of it and yourself too, I hope you don't do something as reckless as that ever again" said Damian with a serious note but you looked at him indignantly and replied "The poor thing would have drowned had I been a second late. Besides I know how to swim" you grumped a bit and Damian found it to be endearing and the two of you exchanged numbers and parted ways after that exchange took place. That night he wasn't able to forget about you and he made sure to visit the same place next day to make sure you and the puppy were doing all right. He didn't even know why he was so concerned about someone he just met but seeing you do something as reckless as that made him want to protect you and just wrap you with his arms so you couldn't endanger yourself. What were you making him feel?
Sure enough the next day Damian saw you and the puppy and he was glad to see it doing okay. The both of you spent some time together and you liked spending time with him. Though he had a stoic expression most of the times you could tell deep down he cared for other people. He took you to a Cafe where you both ordered something and you went to see Titus his dog. Titus seemed to take a liking to you immediately and the puppy too. Titus kept wandering near your legs and Damian thought it was adorable when he tried to place his paws up on you as if he was asking you to lift him up like a child. The puppy was a bit shy around him but Titus didn't seem to mind
Soon it was time for you to go home and Damian didn't want you to leave. He wanted you to stay with him and with a heavy heart he had to bid farewell to you. However it didn't mean that his mind and heart rested though, Gotham was a dangerous place and in the little time he's known you he's already taken a liking to you which meant that he's appointed himself as your guardian and protector to keep you safe from this twisted world and so day by day he kept stalking you and kept an eye on you to make sure you were all right
Finally he reached a point where his obsession could no longer be contained and he needed you like a dying man needing air so he kidnapped you and took you for himself. Does he regret it? Not an inch because the way he sees it is that you both are destined to be together forever. He felt his heart break when he saw you crying your heart out, begging him to please take you back and even after he bought you your puppy for company you still avoided him like the Corona virus. However you just started opening up to him recently and that was something he felt immensely thankful for. You finally saw that he loved you with all his heart and he wouldn't harm you and besides you were tired of being alone all the time
Currently the two of you were watching some shows together and you decided to watch Austin and Ally after you'd insisted. You loved Austin and Ally since you were a kid it brought back so many memories and when you accidentally let the fact slip that Austin used to be your childhood crush Damian felt like someone had knocked the wind out of his chest. Just what EXACTLY did you see in that immature blonde haired Walmart Ken ripoff he didn't know but he needed to make sure you'd forget about this Austin fellow effective immediately. Damian doesn't care if he's being petty, he doesn't want your heart getting stolen by someone else. Your heart is reserved only for him and he'll have various tactics to make you forget about Austin. He'll either make sure you watch something else that's different or when you try to see Austin and Ally he'll just start bragging and boasting about how much better he is than him and pin point and nit pick EVERYTHING wrong with Austin. Like mentioned before no man can steal your heart as long as he's with you

Pepper sighed as she exited the elevator to head toward the lab. About two hours ago, she received the notification she and Rhodey set up several years ago. Rhodey was already en route to the tower. Should be here in the next twenty minutes.
When the doors slid open to the lab, she found Tony sitting in a chair, hand deep into a robot, but his focus was on a projected screen in front of him. Looks like he was reading paged of book. When he tilts his head a certain way, the pages turn.
" Tony. What are you doing?"
" Nothing. Just reading"
" Uh huh. Then why did Friday notify me that you unblocked Peter's on the server"
" Hey! Big tattle tell Friday! Don't worry about it, Pep. It's been a while, and I heard from Brucie that Peter published another paper. And I just wanted to read it. "
" Don't start this up again Tony. You go down this rabbit hole its going to be like before"
" Have faith Pepper! I'm just reading a paper, I'm not asking him out."
" Again?"
Tony swirls around in his chair and faces Pepper.
" I can control myself!"
" Said that the last 3 times. This time isn't going to work. Just leave him be Tony"
" It's not going to be anything! His idea to use some nano tech in closing wounds is intriguing, but we would have to test that out. Lots more research. I could get a grant for him to explore it. "
" Tony!"
Pepper stomps her foot to get his attention before he goes off on a tangent. This is how it always goes with Peter and Tony.
See Tony met Peter when Peter was 18 and was doing a summer internship at the tower. They hit it off and started a whirlwind romance. And that's how it went.
Things would be great, then Peter would ask for more, and Tony would break up with him. They separate for a while. Peter does something that draws Tony back in, and they try to be friends and end up where they started.
It's not like Tony doesn't know that Peter knows himself in the ways of science. But it came to the relationship? The long haul? Tony wanted that, but Peter was just so young, so he kept pushing him away.
They have been doing this song and dance for years. The last break up was a year and a half ago.
And Peter left without a fuss this time. Simply packed up his bags, told Tony to stop contacting him til he grows up and figures out what he wants. But not wait for him cause he was absolutely done.
The doors open to the lab again and Rhodey walks out.
" i don't smell alcohol so Tony is still sober. Whats the emergency Pepper"
" PGMATDK Protocol "
" Shit okay. "
Tony blinks.
" Hey! Only I'm allowed to have acronyms!"
"Sure Tones. But brace yourself."
"What?"
Pepper sighs and looks to Rhodey before back to Tony.
" You've read just Peter's papers. Haven't researched into him again correct?"
Tony frowned and looked between the two.
" No just his published work..."
" Well I'm sorry that this is coming out but...Peter got married"
Tony stares at them before standing up and pacing.
" We have only been broken up a year and a half? When? To who? "
Tony spins around to look at them.
" Tell me it wasn't to that Strange guy"
" No he didn't marry Dr. Strange, someone else about a month ago.
Tony stares at them again before sitting down. Rhodey comes to stand next to him and puts his hand on his shoulder.
" I'm sorry Tony..."
They stayed like for a while before Tony whispered.
" Does he seem happy?"
" Don't open that box Tony. But... he does... yes."
Later that night Tony was looking up the photos.

hello my dumbass was up watching horror media before bed even though i know it gives me HORRIBLE anxiety so could we maybe get a drabble or something of terzo comforting a fem!reader having a mini anxiety attack before bed, maybe with cuddling involved? thank you so much :,)
love love this prompt! tw anxiety. about 700 words.
“Oh my god, why did I do this to myself?” You squeak out in a hushed whisper as you pull your knees up to your chest. Blankets and pillows surround you and the only light in your room coming from your dimly light cell phone screen which is now laying face up on your bed. It’s just you in your room. You feel your chest start to tighten and your heart starts to thud. Your phone screen times out and goes black, a jolt of terror striking through you so you quickly unlock your phone.
It was one of those nights where you didn’t have much to do and you went down a YouTube rabbit hole. It didn’t take long until you found yourself deep into unsettling videos that you could have just scrolled past but your curiosity had gotten the better of you. You told yourself you wouldn’t be scared, that they weren’t real and that you’ve seen and researched far worse things while being a member of the church of Satan but… here you are.
You try to distract yourself but the thoughts have already taken hold. The thought to text a few of your friends crossed your mind but who would be awake at this hour?
Shit.
You know someone who would be.
Within seconds, he is at your door with somehow perfectly ruffled hair and a sleepy grin. His t-shirt is a bit wrinkly and his sweatpants make it painfully obvious that he is not wearing any briefs. He leans in close to you, his grin only growing.
“Thinking about me, eh, sibling?” Terzo’s voice is deep and husky but at the moment, you couldn’t care less about him being the over the top flirt he is. The two of you had connected recently and the last time you were together things got a bit hot and heavy.
“I-I’m sorry, Terzo. I’m not in the mood for that.” You whisper, holding your pillow to your chest and clutching your phone. “I’m a little spooked tonight.” A wave of embarrassment washes over you as your cheeks turn bright red. His expression immediately changes to concern and he is quick to loop one of his arms around you and pull you close.
“Why didn’t you say so, tesoro?” He hums into your ear then starts to usher you back to your bed. The light of your phone helps guide the two of you until Terzo flips the switch to your desk lamp to allow a warm, dim yellow light to flood the room. He is so close behind you, his strong nose nuzzling against your hair and neck as the two of you waddle to your bed. You slip into it and he is right there beside you, the warmth of his body pressing into you and his arms wrapping securely around your chest.
When you hooked up, there was no snuggling or after care, so you’re pleasantly surprised by how comfortable he makes you. In all honesty, you weren’t expecting him to react in such a way to you being frightened but it makes the crush on him you already have blossom and the butterflies in your stomach flutter.
“Will you stay the night?” You pipe up once you are comfortably nestled underneath the covers and in his arms. The tightness in your chest is already gone and you still feel a little bit like a baby for having to have someone come comfort you.
“Si, si, of course I will. I would not be able to live with myself if you have a nightmare after I’ve left.” He teases, his soft lips brushing against your cheek, You snuggle in close to him and manage a soft giggle as he gives you a squeeze. “Rest now, puffetta. I will fight off the monsters for you.”
Terzo starts to gently stroke your arms and presses his nose against your temple. You focus on his breathing, his chest rising and falling against you and you start to match the pattern until your eyes start to grow heavy and your mind starts to drift.
Soft breaths puff through your lips as you fall asleep soundly in his strong arms.

the end of an era
I wanted to thank you all, not only for all the notes of gratitude, encouragement, etc., in my inbox, but for being my faithful readers over the last ten years as I blundered around, answering asks, figuring things out on the fly, mistyping myself half a dozen times, and learning by “answering.” It’s been an incredible blessing for me to be part of your lives, and now, I hope, I have left behind enough of a resource, through my thousands of answered questions, my MBTI book, and my ongoing FunkyMBTI Blog, that you can be guided to your type and start the journey of self-development.
I want to say a few more things, but first, I’ll answer the burning questions that I know are going through your mind directly.
Tumblr media
Does this mean no more character typings? No, it does not. I will continue updating FunkyMbti.com for the indefinite future, and those posts will automatically be ported over to this tumblr page, along with posts from Sixy Pixie (which I may expand to include general Enneagram posts/information/insights).
All it means is I am retiring from answering typing questions. I will still be active in various online communities, doing research, gathering information, and sharing it on my blogs. My interest in MBTI has waned since writing my book (which I consider the “achievement” of over a decade of work/research/learning), so the best way I know of is to move forward.
Does this mean I can’t request characters anymore? No, it does not. You can always contact me through FunkyMBTI.com’s contact page to make character requests. I have an ongoing list of characters people would like to see, and I hope to get around to most of them. (Such as, people want to see The OC, The Scream movies, and more Hollywood icons, such as Natalie Wood). I also have Sanditon, more Shadow and Bone typings, etc., coming.
How can I know about your Enneagram book and/or other books? Thank you for asking! You can either stay tuned here, since any announcement posts on my blog will update here, or you can join my mailing list to receive all my updates (of reviews, upcoming books, free book giveaways, and more).
Are you going to delete Funky on tumblr? No, it will stay up as long as tumblr survives, not only as a monument to my zillion hours of work, but to the thousands of people who braved the internet to ask me questions and allowed me to showcase my “Big Sister Energy.” Ha, ha. Seriously, though, I appreciate all the questions, comments, compliments, and submissions over the years, including the gigantic assortment of characters from shows/movies I may never watch.
What now? I will stock the queue for a few months and take time off, and then hopefully dig more into the Enneagram, since I think that has real potential to change people’s lives for the better.
Tumblr media
Final Thoughts:
It seems fitting that I close “the end of an era” (as my ENFJ friend put it, when she heard about this) as I approach the end of a “decade” in my life, and a big “0” birthday. I can’t exactly recall how my journey started. I think I took one of those MBTI quizzes, shared by a friend on some social media website, got mistyped as an INTJ, and fell down a rabbit hole that took over my life for over a decade. I went through every possible type known to man (other than SP), and can now finally claim with authority to be an ENFP.
I made all the mistakes you are going to make, if you are just starting out on this journey of self-awareness – I listened to the wrong people, I took in the wrong information, I mistyped myself and others, I had to unlearn everything that made no sense, but along the way, I learned how to introspect and be present with myself. To pay attention to what I am doing, and why I am doing it, and that is the most valuable take-away from this experience. You can either go through life oblivious to your true self, or you can go through life friends with yourself, and aware of both your strengths and your weaknesses. I recommend the latter. It's hard but worth it.
Doing that for so long, getting used to being “wrong,” prepared me to read my first book on the Enneagram. And it changed my life. I knew I was a 6, that there was nothing “wrong” with me, that other people struggled with the same things I did. And my introspection started growing deeper. There were many ego battles along the way, denial of the aspects of 6 profiles that I didn’t want to admit to, followed by resignation and self-awareness (that I do that too, and it’s revolting!). But it’s a journey that I intend to walk on, for the rest of my life, and I’m glad to know these things. I wish I had known them sooner. I would have been a much better friend.
All of my current friends came to me through Funky. My friends in Sweden and Tennessee and Idaho and India and Philadelphia and Florida and Spain and Greece. I would not know them, had they not reached out to me, asked me a question, asked if we could e-mail, or helped me figure something out. Funky has been my “social” life for a decade. Some of them are still with me, even though one of them is not – Maddie, my beloved ENTP co mod, my zany, nutty, wild-hearted 793 “DJ” who could simultaneously make me laugh until I cried and drive me insane with frustration, passed away of a heart attack during the pandemic in 2021. One minute she was in my life, and the next she was gone forever. I never told you at the time, but it seems a fitting end to my time here, to pay homage to a friend I hope to meet one day “in person” in whatever comes after this. So Maddie, thank you for everything you put into this blog with me, thank you for the hours of fun and laughter, for the many hundreds of posts that will stand as a testament to your memory. I miss you. And I hope wherever you are, you are doing something crazy.
Thank you, dear reader, for coming with me on this journey. I know we shall meet again.
XOXO, Charity / ENFP Mod / Big Sister Energy

Hi, I saw your answer to someone asking about what a Hannuka celebration is usually like and I thought it was really well thought-out and helpful. I was wondering if you might be willing to give me some insight on other Jewish holidays. This was actually inspired by the DP Hannuka challenge. I'm writing a long DP fanfic that's largely from Sam's perspective and when I saw the challenge I thought this was a great time to write some holiday scenes. But when I started researching Hannuka I read that it's not really a major holiday I wanted to know which holidays hold more significant meaning and...well, I went down a rabbit hole and I feel like I HAVE to make sure I do Sam's cultural heritage justice.
The part I'm writing right now takes place in autumn. I wanted to include a little bit about her family celebrating/participating in Rosh Hashana and the ten days of awe. The thing is, I have absolutely no frame of reference; I hadn't even heard of it until a few days ago. Its surprisingly difficult to find descriptions of what exactly people do to observe that holiday besides food. There's plenty to read about the food haha.
I was wondering if you might be willing to share with me your experience with autumn traditions. Your description of Hannuka was so helpful and you seemed open to more questions. But if you're not comfortable please don't feel any pressure, my goal here is to be respectful and I honestly don't know enough about Jewish Culture to know if I'm being rude so please tell me if I am. I live in a predominantly Christian area and the majority of my cultural knowledge on the subject comes from TV which tends to only bring up Judaism when a character talks about Hannuka instead of Christmas so I am basically an uncultured goldfish.
First of all, thank you, and thank you for reaching out. I love talking about this stuff in general, and I especially really enjoy helping people navigate representing characters' Judaism in their works. I know it can be really intimidating to do research on your own- you don't know what questions to ask, or what's a reliable source, or what's unilaterally true vs what varies community to community, and you want to do a good job and not perpetuate something hurtful or harmful- it's a lot! So while I want to be clear I'm just one person speaking from my personal experience and knowledge, Jews are not a monolith and Jewish thought and experience varies a lot, you can always reach out and I'll do my best to help.
Note, the Jewish calendar is lunar, which is about ten days shorter than the solar year, which is why Jewish holidays don't have the same Gregorian date year to year. Every three years (roughly) we have a whole extra 'leap month' to keep the seasons on track, because certain holidays have to be in certain seasons (most notably Passover). Jewish days also begin at sundown and end at about an hour past ('three stars in the sky') the next day, ie Shabbat is Friday evening to Saturday night each week. The high holidays are in the fall, generally, but to know when specifically something is myjewishlearning or chabad are websites you can look up 'what date is [holiday] + [year]'
Rosh Hashanah (literally translated 'head of the year'), New Year's (one of four actually). Kicks off the high holidays, both very joyous and very reflective. Apples and honey is the classic holiday treat, for a sweet new year. Challah for this holiday is often made in a circular shape, for the cycle of the year, rather than the normal Shabbat braided loaves, and sometimes people will make it with cinnamon sugar or raisins for sweetness. You also begin reaching out to make amends to people you may have hurt over the past year, a process that continues throughout the high holidays. A big theme of the high holidays is Teshuva, which is sometimes translated as repentance but is more closely 'return'. It's about making sincere apologies and doing the work to get better and avoid repeating the same kinds of harm. I once texted a non-Jewish friend of mine an apology for a previous fight of ours around this time that for her came kind of out of nowhere, which made her think I was dying. People often have a family meal together. Fun fact, the current Jewish year is 5784. Two days long kinda. Holy
The ten days between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, as you flagged, the Days of Awe or Days of Return (or in Hebrew they're the aseret yamei teshuva) are more on this theme of reflection and amends. Many participate sometime in here in a practice called tashlich, where you symbolically release bread crumbs (or some other crumpled foodstuff that may be more suited to your local aquatic life) into the water (typically a river, but sometimes your local Water is a lake or ocean) as a way to release your guilt and regrets and move forward into the new year knowing you've done all you can and you now have a clean slate
Yom Kippur ('day of atonement'), holiest day of the Jewish calendar. One of two major fasts (full day, rather than dawn to dusk). Very thoughtful and contemplative, typically a full day of synagogue services reflecting. We spend most of the day thinking about death. For many communities it's traditional to wear white or to avoid gold. You think about your wrongdoings and how to improve in the coming year, and deeply consider whether you've made your amends and if you've sincerely put in the work to change and improve where you need it.
Sukkot! Rounds off the high holidays, eight day festival that starts five days after Yom Kippur. You build a small structure called a sukkah (you BET there are a hundred specific details) in your yard and take meals in it together, big holiday for guests and visiting. First two and last two days are holy, middle four are still part of the holiday but are more mundane, and you go about your regular life (ie you can use electronics and go to work). Many observe the daily mitzvot of eating something in the sukkah, and shaking the lulav and etrog (a gathering of four plants, the lulav (palm frond), myrtle branch, willow branch are bundled together and the etrog (citron) in your other hand, symbolizes gathering in all the different kinds of our people). At the last days of Sukkot is the holiday Simchat Torah ('the joy of the torah'), where we reach the end of the annual cycle of reading the Torah and begin it anew. VERY joyous and boisterous, big holiday for dancing.
Also, here's an extremely quick and dirty rundown of other the other more prominent Jewish holidays (I'm basically skipping a number of minor fasts and smaller celebrations, but also, hannukkah is on this list, and it is nowhere near the scale of importance as Rosh Hashaha).
Hannukkah. Eight day festival in the winter, lighting a nine branched menorah (the ninth candle lights the others, one more each night ie night one you light one night eight you light eight, once again a THOUSAND little laws and specifics. we are a pedantic people). You have heard of this one
Tu B'Shevat! Late winter/early spring holiday that is the new year for trees. (The name is just the date, the 15th of the month Shevat. Most though not all Jewish holidays are on the 1st or 15th of the month, or, the new or full moon). Big holiday for planting trees or trying new fruits
Purim! Early spring. In a leap year this happens twice (though 'little Purim' is a much smaller holiday). This one is bonkers and criminally underrated. Costumes, giving gifts both to charity and to your friends and family, telling the story of that time a guy tried to kill us all and failed so hard we eat cookies shaped like his stupid hat to this day (hamantaschen or oznei haman, it's just the Yiddish or Hebrew name for them respectively)
Pesach or Passover, you have probably heard of this one. Springtime! Can't eat leavened grains (wheat, spelt, barley, oats, rye) so you gotta clean ALL your stuff out. Most Orthodox Ashkenazim also don't eat 'kitniyot', basically, similar food categories that include nuts, beans, corn, and rice, so if that's your tradition it's pretty thorough. First two nights are the Seder, a large, meandering meal where we tell the story of the holiday (in my family we regularly sit down around seven, don't get to the 'eat the Meal' part until nine, and are at the table til midnight. Many families are a little more effecient but many are even less). First two and last two days are holy, first two days especially are a big time for visiting family
The seven weeks from Passover to Shavuot are a period of time called the Omer, mostly just focused on counting up (not down) the days to Shavout. On the 36th day, Lag B'Omer (name is once again just the day) it's a holiday celebrated largely with bonfire parties
Shavuot (name just means 'weeks', for the seven weeks we count to get here) is the holiday that celebrates receiving the Torah. Celebrated with study of Torah and many have a custom to eat dairy (or just not meat), holy, two days-ish
Tisha B'av is a day of mourning, and the other major fast. Commemorates a lot of various tragedies and traumas. The weeks leading up to it go through a few stages of mourning and mourning practices
Elul is the full month leading up to Rosh Hashanah, and is something of a 'ramp up' to the attitudes and festivities, where you start thinking about your past and coming year
Shabbat. As mentioned this one is every week, holy day of rest from sundown Friday to a little later Saturday. Many celebrate by going to synagogue and/or holding a meal together Friday night and/or Saturday afternoon
Miscellaneous note, safety always comes first. If there is an emergency that would require you to break a rule of the holiday, do it. The principle is called pikuach nefesh, or protection of the soul (life)
Holy days are traditionally (though not everyone observes in this way and specifics vary, it is none of my business, repsonsibility, or interest to tell other Jewish folks what to do) observed by a number of restricitons that I like the categorize as just being part of the world, not trying to create or destory anything within it. The specifics have a lot to do with laws tracing back to not participating in argricultural or textile labor, but most relevant to my life personally is not turning on or off electronics (or fire), and no writing/drawing/fabric crafts.
Again NOT every Jew does full traditional observances of every holiday and that a) is NONE of my or anyone's business b) does not somehow make them 'less' Jewish. Judaism belongs to every Jew and is theirs to decide what to do with. That said, it is a chip on my shoulder when the only Jewish characters I see depicted in media, overwhelmingly written by gentile creators, go over the top to stress how much they hate following Jewish law or how much they love not doing it; feels like people are only interested in having Jewish characters whose Judaism is either a total joke, or it has to be as unobtrusive as possible- which is another reason I try to make myself available to answer questions you might have about how TO include your characters' Judaism

Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional, take everything I say with a grain of salt. All I did was do some research and paid attention in science class when they were talking about homeostasis. Also, this is a long post, brainrot kicked in and I decided to just keep talking about this.
It is about to be midnight where I live and I need this brainrot question answered PRONTO!!! (I answered it myself because I got more curious the further down the rabbit hole I went)
So- what are the logistics of being a vampire??? Like- in general.
Everyone keeps saying that "vampires are cold" but that would imply that vampires stop pumping blood after turning. This wouldn't be the case since in the redactedverse there are instances (*cough cough* Adam) of vampires draining other vampires.
Unless Adam bit into every artery in his maker and sucked it dry, I doubt Adam would have a chance of draining someone with no blood flow. I would like to point out that vampires go for the main arteries (neck, wrist, etc.) to have the blood come to them so they can feed easily.
I searched it up and this is what I found:
"Because a vampire's body essentially "dies", it no longer conducts heat the way a normal human body does."
Basically, after turning vampires go from warm-blooded to cold-blooded. Though, the way they worded it had me wondering, "How do humans conduct heat?" So I searched it up.
Tumblr media
Now, I'm really confused. Vampires don't usually eat, and I'm not sure inactive organs are going to emit heat. (as you can tell I really want there to be a chance at a warm vampire)
More research- this time I'm looking at the redacted wiki fandom, to refresh myself on the effects of turning on the person's core. I can't trust too much cause the Wiki fandom is a lil messy but I should've known that if a person's powers are muted, the core is also muted-
So it's not the core, and it's not the bloodstream that warms them up. The only thing that would warm them up is feeding. And there's the real question- how specifically do vampires feed? Do they bite in and swallow the blood to digest it from there? Or do their fangs suck it up and bring it directly to their bloodstream somehow?
The first way would be very inefficient and take longer for them to fully feel the effects of being full. As well as the fact that the nutrient, oxygen, and water in the blood needed for them to survive would already be digested enough to flow to other parts of the body. As a result, vampires would most likely drain their "victims" before they realize they are full. They also would most likely need hella lot more blood than is portrayed in redacted to survive.
The second option is a little more intuitive. It would be a lot quicker, and at the rate that the body pumps blood around (one blood cell can travel the entire body in a minute), the needed nutrient would get to the body in time for the vampire to feel full. Though, I'm not sure the blood would stay warm for that long. Depends on how much the vampire takes. It also poses the question "Do vampires make their own blood?" I'd think so because they heal quickly but at the same time I don't because they fuckin drink the stuff. Another question would be how they get the blood from the fangs to the bloodstream, but they also grew fangs so technically anatomy changing around isn't out of the question.
This has already taken two hours of my life we're not even going to talk about how much blood is actually needed to satiate a vampire's hunger for a day- let alone a few days to a week.
So, looking at this scientifically, yes, vampires can be warm, and not just after feeding. They can also be warm digesting human foods even though they don't get anything out of it. As long as something passes through the digestive tract I think that's enough to get the chemical reactions or whatever going. Would a wine glass of blood be enough to keep a vampire full? no, but it's a nice thought.
Obviously, this is all fantasy, do whatever you want, I just like thinking about the logistics of things, and the fact that I live with a nurse (my mom) doesn't help lol
Anyways, have a great night guys, and ig I'll see you tomorrow (It's 1 am)

the true Thoschei shipper experience: learning about binary star systems and immediately going “ah yes, these are the disasters from my blue box show”
Very well said, anon!
In fact I've been reading articles about it for over an hour. This one by Space.com covers is pretty well.
And I need to warn you: I went down a rabbit hole so this is a long looong post, no I am Not high despite what my arguments might suggest, no I don't have a lot of free time I am working from home unsupervised by my superiors and with free access to internet. Also, I had a lot of fun researching this.
Binary stars can be divided in categories based on their orbits. There are, for example, Wide Binaries and Close Binaries.
Close binaries, on the other hand, evolve nearby, able to transfer their mass from one to the other. The primaries of some close binaries consume the material from their companion, sometimes exerting a gravitational force strong enough to pull the smaller star in completely.
Ughhh so Thoschei coded.
But I have found something that's even MORE Thoschei coded.
At the end of that Space.com article there's a mention to a star called "Nemesis". You can read more about it on this Business Insider article, it was the easiest one to understand that I could find.
Basically it's a theory proposed in the 1980's by a physicist called Richard Muller from the University of California. He suggested that our Sun is a binary star.
Tumblr media
And according to the scientists that give credence to this theory, if Nemesis was a real star, it might have been responsible for the mass extinctions that happened on Earth about 66 million years ago.
Tumblr media
The thing is that scientists were, to this day, unable to find that star. The physicist who proposed this theory, Richard Muller, believes it is allocated 1.5 years from the Sun.
Now, a lot of scientists think that there's no evidence that Nemesis is real. In that article, Nasa claims it's a hypothesis and it has been disproven.
But let's move to the most heartwarming part of it:
Tumblr media
My whole point with this post is, sure, that theory/hypothesis may be proven false, but I just think it's funny how similar Nemesis (even the name!!) can be to the Master.
In the beginning Nemesis orbited the Sun, just like Koschei (the Master) orbited Theta (the Doctor). Theta had always been different, always acted like he was special.
Then, they fell apart. And Nemesis, just like the Master, could've been responsible for the mass extinction that happened on Earth - the Master has been writing plans like this on his personal journal ever since the Doctor decided Earth was more interesting than him and humans were more fun to hang out with than with him.
(Although the last screenshot suggests that the star isn't actually responsible for the mass extinctions. So, Master, it's your chance to shine! As my professors have said, it has been done before, but not the way you do!)
I love that this scientist suggests that Nemesis should be called Companion, instead, because that's what the Master was supposed to be. That's what the Doctor wanted him to be. That's what they promised each other when they were young.
Fun fact that I completely forgot about while writing this post because I am an idiot: Gallifrey is in a binary star system. However, it seems like it has an artificial origin. So I don't know how to apply it to the post but we can apply it as a metaphor to them too because, I mean, how many fanfics of them running around the red fields under the twin suns have we read, right?
SO yeah I think I have gone too far with this and I just noticed it's actually been three hours but hey it's a friday night and I'm sick so!

As Long as You Are - Part 3.5
LINKS: Part 3, Social Media Blurb, Masterlist
Author’s Note: This is a little interlude of Auden and y/n reading the message and what she replies with. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to continue writing to make it a Part 4 but @ethereallyd suggested that it would work as a 3.5 (gotta shout out the homies)
Pronouns Used: She/Her (use of y/n)
POV: Third Person.
Warnings: swearing, probably incorrect music terminology, mediocre use of punctuation. NOT PROOFREAD
Word Count: 1319
Tumblr media
It took all of y/n’s willpower not to look at the message before they got to her apartment which was around a 20 minute subway ride away. Every time y/n would look at her friend Auden would shake her head as if to tell her “not yet” and to wait to open the message. By the time the two of them flew into y/n’s apartment they were out of breath and laughing at the ridiculousness of two college students racing down the street.
“Open it! Open it!” Auden chanted as she collapsed onto the floor.
“Okay, okay. I’m doing it now.” y/n’s hands were slightly shaking either from the cardio she got sprinting to her apartment or her waiting hours for his response.
“Read it out loud, I don’t want to have to look over your shoulder.” Auden said.
“Okay, it starts:
“So, this is a long message and I also got distracted. Hopefully you didn’t think I left you on read. Anyway, your question about how I went about researching is fairly simple to explain. I went down a Google and Spotify rabbit-hole figuring out which artists have a similar sound to yours. Not in a “wow these are just carbon copies” because there was literally no one I could find who had the same sound. Which is a good thing by the way.
“I listened to the whole There’s Always Glimmer album multiple times throughout my investigation. I think I might officially be classified as a ‘fanboy’. But I digress.
“I saw you had done some work with Ed Tullett (who was a brand new artist to me) and I looked up what his music was classified as. Google said “indie, indie folk, and experimental” and you’re a bit of everything there. So I did a little more digging about how the concept of “experimental” is classified and it’s basically defined as: ‘any music or music or music genre that pushes the existing boundaries and genre definitions-”
“Dude, is he quoting his sources?” Auden cut in.
“Uh, I actually think he is. Now be quiet.” y/n said before continuing to read the message aloud.
“Which I might have overlooked if you hadn’t sent me a recording of the work in progress-”
“Hold up,” Auden said as she pushed the phone away from her friend's face. “You let Harry Styles listen to your current work but not me?” she asked, offended.
“Would it help if I told you that-”
“No.” Auden said, cutting off y/n mid sentence, “you can’t use that one again. You already used it today.” Y/n gave a sheepish smile to her friend, shrugging. “I’m expecting you to play the recording for me after we finish with this, now continue reading.”
“And it wasn’t indie or folk or a mix of the two. It was completely different. You used a lot of sound distortion, synthesizers, and experimental instrumentals. I’m not really sure how to properly explain it because it was only 30 seconds, but even within There’s Always Glimmer you can hear the start to your experimentation with varying tones. And I truly think that it’s a kind of sound that I haven’t heard in a long time. I suppose the only other album that gives a similar vibe in terms of experimentation you’ve touched upon is the 1976 album Mother Earth’s Plantasia by Mort Garson. But even then there are drastic differences.”
“My God,” Auden cut in as y/n took a breath, “he wrote you a whole novel.” She explained, pointing to the phone.
“He’s clearly trying to explain.” Y/n defended.
“Explain what, y/n? It’s like he’s trying to meet a word count on a school paper.”
“Auden!” Y/n exclaimed.
“What? He could have written you maybe a paragraph, not a full thesis paper.”
“Hmm, I don’t have a rebuttal for that. But we’re almost finished.”
“As a closing statement to this long winded TEDTalk, I want to ask a question, which you can say no to. I’ll be in New York June 16 for a concert and I would love to sit in on your creative process and I’m up for staying a couple extra days in New York. Would you be up for that? Only if you’ll have me. I know this is fairly last minute. So no pressure.”
“Oh my gosh. Did Harry just…” Auden trailed off.
“I think he did,” y/n said, finishing her friend’s thought. Y/n turned towards Auden, the phone in her hand forgotten, neither of them moved as they stared at each other in bewilderment. “Does this mean I’ve made it?” Y/n said, breaking the silence that had settled over the studio apartment.
“Are you kidding me!” Auden grabbed the phone that had fallen out of y/n’s hand and pointed to the message, “Harry Styles just sent you like a 400 word essay describing your music, said he’s a fan. No, scratch that,” Auden cut herself off, “he said ‘fanboy’ and then asked if he could visit you in the studio. Yeah, I think you’ve made it.”
“I genuinely do not know what to do now.”
“Well I do.” Y/n looked back up at Auden and waited for her to continue, “it’s time for us to freak the fuck out. We’ve been way too casual throughout this whole… thing. I don’t even know what to call it. Plus, it’s New York City, no one will care if we scream.”
The two of them took a solid 20 minutes to get their fangirl-era excitement out of their systems before drafting a response to Harry. Auden insisted on acting cool and casual but y/n wanted to make sure that he knew she wasn’t just saying yes because of who he was. It took an additional 10 minutes for them to reach the final draft.
The discussion came to an end when y/n said, “y’know that I’m the one he’s messaging, right?”
Direct Message: harrystyles
oh my gosh, that was a long message but so thoughtful. thank you, truly. that meant a lot to me. especially coming from someone whose music i enjoy.  and yes, that would be awesome! i’m busy june 18th but i’m free the 19th and 20th.
Thank goodness, I was a bit worried that the massive message would come across as overwhelming. The 19th and 20th are perfect, just let me know what times work best for you. I’ll be on your time
you’d like to visit both days?
Oh, I’m so sorry, I misunderstood. Either one is fine.
no no no! no need for an apology. you’re more than welcome to come both days!
Awesome! I just don’t want to intrude or anything
not intruding! i’ll send you the address. you’ll also need to let me know when you get to the door because you need a keycard to get in on the weekends i typically arrive at the studio on sunday’s around 5-ish pm and then stay fairly late so feel free to drop by anytime after 5! and i teach on monday’s from 12-1:30 and then my friend and i typically grab lunch after. so maybe around 2:30 on monday?
Yeah, that sounds great! I’m excited to see the studio
oh, one other thing. i don’t mean to offend or anything but is it okay if i bring my best friend, auden? she’s normally with me anyway
No offense taken. And of course you can! I was planning on bringing Mitch too The besties can meet
oh no mitch is going to be there?
… yes? Would you rather him not?
i’m going to be honest, i’m a little more intimidated by him than you
Now that’s offensive
i’m sorry 😭 his musical talent is just incredibly impressive
I’ve known him for years and I get it
that literally doesn’t help at all now i’m even more nervous

Sea monkeys – a great pet for the CFS person!
Tumblr media
Having CFS is exhausting (pun intended), and it takes a lot away from you in life. I really noticed it in the pet department. I couldn’t play as long with my cats, and their general upkeep became more of a challenge to me. Thankfully I have my husband who has stepped in and can assist me in keeping the cats happy and healthy. Having a dog is unfortunately out of the question, there’s no way I’d be able to keep up with one and give it a good quality of life.
For years, even before CFS made itself properly at home, I had begged my husband to let me have Sea Monkeys as pets, but he’d always said no, or “not right now”. And being the good wife that I am (lol) I would leave the topic alone until I would find a way to slip it into conversation the following year.
I’m now housebound with CFS and having mysterious joint pains, preventing me from moving as freely as CFS allows us to. Keeping myself entertained when I couldn’t do anything became the bane of my existence. To sum it up in three words; I. Was. Bored. And you know what annual topic finally rolled around? You guessed it, “can I have Sea Monkeys as pets?”
To my absolute surprise, my husband said yes; but with a few conditions;
We had to get them a proper little tank, not those gimmicky ones they’re typically sold in.
We had to have the tank completely set up before putting the Sea Monkeys into it.
My husband would buy me the tank and the tank accessories, but I needed to buy things like the gravel, decorations, food, the Sea Monkeys etc.
I needed to research how to properly care for them before starting the hatching process, since it was my first-time having Sea Monkeys.
Obviously, I agreed to all the conditions (while my husband doesn’t like Sea Monkeys, he does care for their wellbeing, as with every animal), so down the research rabbit hole I went. I clicked on every website with the mention of Sea Monkeys, learnt the water pH they like, what they eat, their lifecycle, everything – you name it, I did my darndest to research it. I even came across a subreddit dedicated to Sea Monkeys and instantly hit that subscribe button.
We ended up buying a cute little 500ml fish tank on Aliexpress, which is plenty of space for the little guys. The water circulator that came with the tank is too strong for the Sea Monkeys, so we don’t use it, but the tank itself is perfect.
Other accessories that we purchased were;
A tiny bit of driftwood for decoration.
An air pump.
Java moss and a Java fern plants from the local aquarium store.
Some very fine gravel substrate.
And finally, the Sea Monkey (brine shrimp) eggs themselves.
Tumblr media
All up we spent around 100 NZD. My husband helped me set up the tank the way I wanted it to look and helped me mix the correct ratio of salt into the water for the Sea Monkeys. I’ll gloss over the nitty gritty of setting up the tank for now, but if you’re interested, I’ll put all the details at the bottom of this post!
For days after adding the eggs, I found myself staring into the tank, eagerly awaiting some confirmation that they’d hatched. It wasn’t until about 1-2 weeks later that I managed to properly glimpse my first Sea Monkey! I ended up buying a magnifying glass to see the little dudes because as babies they’re so dang tiny!
The pros of having Sea Monkeys as pets is they’re hardy little guys and can tolerate a lot. They’re cruisy when it comes to their tank so that’s a bonus! On average, they should be fed at least once every 10 days, but I just feed them when their water becomes clear as then I know they’ve eaten their food.
I love sitting at my desk and watching them swim around their tank living their little lives. I probably spend a couple of hours a day doing this. It's been a real boredom buster for me! I never thought they would have their own personalities, but early in the Sea Monkey journey I discovered that they formed two cliques. There were two well defined groups, the bigger ones occupied the left-hand side of the tank, whereas the smaller ones made the right side their homebase. As they grew bigger, they joined the lefties, and eventually they merged into one big group once they were all a decent size – how high schoolish of them! I couldn’t believe my eyes. I messaged a close friend of mine who is raising Sea Monkeys of his own and he confirmed that they do indeed form cliques.
Tumblr media
I’ve noticed that my mental health has gotten a bit better since having the Sea Monkeys to look at. I believe it's because I find them so relaxing to watch and I can focus my attention on them rather than wallowing in my own self-pity at my CFS circumstances (yay, pity party!) My husband doesn’t enjoy Sea Monkeys like I do (too many legs apparently) but when he comes home from university, he’ll happily listen to me talk about what my Sea Monkeys got up to during the day because he knows how happy they make me feel and how they’ve filled a void in my life. I love my little dudes so much; Sea Monkeys make great pets for a CFS person like me!
The nitty gritty of setting up the tank;
Sea Monkeys (a hybrid of brine shrimp) love a high salinity environment so a pH of 7.5-8 is needed for them to hatch. We mixed pure sea salt with distilled water to get the right ratio, however if you can get your hands on aquarium salt, that’s a better option. Aquarium salt has minerals in it that your environment would benefit from, especially if you are having plants in your tank.
The plants we used are called Java moss and Java fern. These are the only aquatic plants (in New Zealand) that I could purchase that would be able to survive such a high salinity environment.
The Sea Monkey subreddit recommends using fine gravel as your substrate instead of the usual tank pebbles because Sea Monkeys are stupid and will get themselves trapped in the pebbles and die.
They need highly oxygenated tank water so getting an air pump with an air stone is a must! HOWEVER. You need to make sure that the pump isn’t too strong that it blows the Sea Monkeys away, it just needs to be a light trickle of air bubbles.
In the wild, Sea Monkeys eat algae and yeast. I feed my Sea Monkeys spirulina powder mixed with distilled water to make a tincture. I use a 1ml syringe to drop it into their tank.
Those simple little dudes are attracted to light. Need to clean an area of their tank? Shine a light on the opposite side and within 5 minutes they’re over there trying to get to the light.
DONT stick their tank in direct sunlight! The heat of the sunlight will change their water temp and kill them. In the mornings, I slide their tank into the indirect light on my desk and they love it! But I only do it when I’m around them so that I can keep an eye on them. I give them about 30 minutes of time in the light daily.
Over time their water will evaporate. Top it up in small increments with distilled water. Do not add additional salt to the water as even though the water evaporates, the salt is still in the tank! As the water evaporates, the salt concentration increases. Adding more distilled water reduces the salt concentration of the water back to the original salinity that you started with. If a lot of water has evaporated, don’t add lots of water to bring the tank to full right away because the sudden change in salinity can shock the Sea Monkeys and kill them.

Fave timeline to make and hardest timeline to write?
oh um. midnights was super fun cause it just worked out perfectly that i had like, eight hours to go insane and research like 90% of it and then write the entire timeline, and then taylor liked that paul mccartney archive tweet right in the middle of me writing it which made me go full crazy, just a super fun night
red was probably the hardest to write because i had no idea how i should be formatting anything, and also i had to re-track down sources for so much of it because i wasn’t planning to post it when i first started compiling information (i also did just. way too much research. especially for 2011. like there was no reason for me to go down half the rabbit holes i went down). 1989 was also an absolute beast for some reason— there was like a mad rush to write a bunch during metlife n1 while watching the livestream and calling a bunch of my friends (which was about as productive as it sounds), and then i knew i was going to miss the actual announcement so i thought i’d type it all out and just hit post from the concert but i procrastinated writing it and ended up not doing that (probably good in the long run cause my phone was at 1%), and then i ended up finishing it on the google search day and it just took forever, like genuinely probably like four hours, and like, why? it’s mostly copy pasting. what am i doing for that long. i don’t even know mostly just going insane i think

Taking Care of Yourself is Part of Writing.
My Whole Writing Process looks something like this:
Tumblr media
I was talking to a writer friend the other night who was asking me how was I was able to make myself write and enjoy it and look forward to it enough to make the ideas grow and to put them down on the page.
I think I threw him for a loop when I said I do it by giving myself permission not to write. I do have a schedule where I block out time in a week to try write... but that time block isn't always putting words on the page. some of those hours are research, outlining, workshopping, or editing... but a lot of the time I use those hours to relax. I read a fic. I take an obnoxiously long bath. I eat a pie I baked, or better, one I didnt have to bake. I play a video game or watch a show or something else that recharges my batteries. In an average week, I have about 12 hours tentatively blocked off for "Writing" but theres some weeks where none of those hours put words on the page.
We writers like to pass around that self-depricating joke with the pie chart about how we spend 5% of our time writing and 95% of the time doing absolutely anything else: editing (10%), sleeping (15%), tumblr shit posting (20%), research rabbit hole (30%), Crying (25%) You all know the joke I'm talking about. I think what gets lost is... you don't need to write more than 5% of the time. The pie chart really isn't a pie chart. It's an iceberg: The whole process is important. The 5% where you're making the words is just the most visible part.
I hit walls some times where I forget I'm allowed not to write. The guilt feedback loop is vicious. It goes like: "I should be writing > but I'm not writing > I don't feel like it > how can I call myself a writer and not write > I'm a bad writer," and turns into "I don't deserve to write > I'm not worthy of my own art > looking at my draft has become bad for my mental health > I physically can't write". And then the whole cycle feeds on itself again. This is worse once you've had a project the stars aligned for that went really really well and became your measuring stick for how well other projects should go. If you hit a rut, well the instinct is that it's your fault as the writer. "Shame shame for not writing..."
It's okay not to write. It's okay if only 1% of your iceberg is writing and the other 99% is taking care of yourself. If your writing stalled because of a physical tool: lack of wifi or a broken computer or an exploded pen or rain-soaked notebook, you would attribute the delay to the tool and repair the tool. And yet, when the essential tool that needs routine maintenance is your body / brain, writers fail to attribute the cause to that - if you need to maintain your computer because it is slow, you wouldn't call yourself a bad writer... so why are you a bad writer if the tool you need to maintain is yourself?
You can still be a writer and not have shared a single piece of writing. You can be a writer even when you're not writing. It's not your fault if you got writers block and/or your brain or body need some essential maintenance. If it is the only unreserved time in your week, use your writing time to give yourself those things you need to feel healthy and good! Just because it doesn't look like words on a page doesnt mean it isn't part of writing!

I went down a few rabbit holes while researching the Advent Calendar last year, that didn't make it into the queue because they got too long or went too far afield. Here's one of them!
One thing you notice when you watch a bazillion videos about old games consoles is how the design of circuitry has evolved. If someone says 'circuit board' today, you think a light piece of leafy green board, filled with parallel lines of copper at 45° and 90° angles, dotted with lots of tiny inscrutable plastic and metal doodads. But it took a long, long time for them to get that way.
If you look at really old circuit boards -- and I mean really, really old circuit boards, like from the beginning of the transistor era, they look completely different. They're brownish, for one thing. And kind of... wiggly?
youtube
Apologies for the transfer quality. It's not your connection, it just sucks. This piece appears to be some sort of promo-tainment thing from Tektronix themselves, from 1969. The rounded corners and bluish fuzz at the edges is an effect called 'vignetting', and it means this is originally from a 16mm film reel. There's no earthly reason for film to look this terrible. The uncentered picture means someone copied it by pointing a camera at a projection screen instead of bothering to get a proper kinescope setup, and the fact that it only goes up to 240p makes me feel like it was originally transferred over two decades ago for RealPlayer and nobody bothered to fix it for YouTube. VHS is about 240 lines, but if this were a crap transfer from a VHS tape you'd also see scanlines. It's possible there's a better copy at VintageTek, a museum dedicated to the history of Tektronix; they are an all-volunteer institution, and they probably have more important things to funnel funding to than updating their YouTube channel.
Point being, it looks like porridge and I'm sorry, but at least the content is interesting.
The brownish color, which is actually from an evolutionary stage earlier than what's covered here, is because many early boards were milled of bakelite rather than electrodeposited onto a glass or fiberglas backplane. If you want to see some of what that might have been like, you can hop over to Usagi Electric. He uses CAD to mill boards, rather than the photochemical process described by Tektronix, but it's pretty much the same idea. He does a lot of it in pursuit of his mad obsession with building a vacuum tube computer here. (If you're curious, his logo says うさぎ電気, "Usagi Denki". "Usagi" is Japanese for rabbit or bunny -- there is one who appears at the end of some videos -- and the spelling of "denki" here specifically means electrics, as opposed to 電機, which is usually rendered electronics. It still pops up in the names of some engineering or technology firms, but generally only the really old ones.)
The wiggly nature of early boards is neatly explained by watching the drafting process, starting about three minutes into the video. It was originally done by hand. The rest of the half-hour video goes through the whole multi-stage process, but the gist is that when you lay out the board, you draw dark lines where you want the conductive traces to be on the final product. To get a consistent size, tape is used for "holes" and tape lines are uses for the traces. If you've ever used stripe tape in nail art, it was apparently something like that -- vinyl tape with a bit of stretch, so you could curve it around. It was a methodical sort of art form. Ever solved one of those "connect the same-color dots without crossing lines" puzzles? It's basically that. If you can't find a topologically-appropriate solution on a single plane, you can produce boards with traces on both the front and the back, as Tektronix does here, and these days you can actually bury traces in internal layers as well. It's just a pain and makes the cost go up exponentially.
The mention of "holes" is interesting. Early circuit boards were nothing but holes. Everything had legs and was soldered on from the underside. Today these are known as "through-hole mounted" components; the alternatives are "surface-mount" components, which are generally smaller and fiddlier to solder on by hand, but considerably easier to lay down and solder in place by machine. Surface-mount technology has been around since before this Tektronix piece, but remained NASA-grade esoterica until the automated assembly process became cost-effective in the 1990s. Today the conductive holes are referred to as "vias" and the little medal dots surface-mount things are soldered to are "pads".
I'll also note that they show the automatic soldering process for these boards late in the video. It involves skimming the boards across the surface of a pool of molten solder. Solder in the 1960s contained a lot of lead. I would not personally like to be in that room. Today a machine places little surface-mount doojiggers in place along with solder beads, and then melts it all very gently in a very hot oven until it all melds together, not unlike a pan of slightly too-runny cookies. If you do it right, the surface tension of the solder keeps it on the pads and out of the traces. This is particularly useful for placing CPUs, whose myriad tiny pins in a tight grid would be far too difficult to solder by hand, and the origin of "reflow" repairs for electronics that are exhibiting symptoms of flaky solder joints.
The "silkscreening" process here does not use silk, but originally it did -- it was invented in Asia, logically enough. The gist of it is that you take a piece of finely woven mesh, traditionally light silk but in modern times also metal or synthetic fiber, and you plug up all of the little holes in it in the areas where you don't want ink to get through it, usually with some sort of water-repellent substance. In the days of yore, you painted on some kind of sap or wax, but nowadays it's usually a light-sensitive plastic that's scraped across the whole mesh, topped with a stencil that is opaque where you want ink to flow, and exposed to UV light that sets the substance. The unset areas that were in shadow are rinsed clean, leaving the mesh permeable in those places. The ink emulsion is then applied to the printing surface beneath in the reverse process: Ink is spread across the mesh, then squeegeed through with enough force to push it through the holes in the weave and onto the surface beneath. The dots of ink bleed just enough to flow into one another, producing a solid area of pigment. The circuit board designs were originally drafted in black on a white background, then photographed and reduced to 1/4 their original size, and the film used as the stencil for the silkscreen.
Holes are drilled mostly by hand(!) in this clip, which is an error-prone process, as you can see from the Usagi Electrics guy. The worker uses what's called a pantograph drill. A pantograph is a device that translates motion from one place to another, often with a change in scale. Typically pantographs are mechanical in nature, based on the complimentary motion of opposite corners of a parallelogram, but you could make a pretty good argument that modern systems that accept movement inputs from a user and translate them elsewhere by computer are also members of the class. Robot-assisted surgery comes to mind. If you cared to have an even longer argument, you could also consider systems that scan items with laser photons in order to reproduce them on a lathe or CNC machine pantographs in spirit, if not in fact.
A visual or optical comparator is just a device that projects a magnified view of something up on a screen, along with a point, grid, or profile it needs to match, not unlike a microfiche viewer with a targeting reticule. They're still used in some areas, although software image processing is steadily gaining ground.
You'd be amazed at how many things still need a look-over by a human with a brain. The lack of human brains is how we got the sharply-angled board traces we have today, in fact. Computer-aided drafting was developed to a usable level in the 1980s, and predictably the people using it were mostly engineers. The kind of route-finding you do in those connect-the-dots puzzles, and that the electronics engineers did when drafting the boards, is one of those very slippery human things. You want to find the shortest path, to save on the precious metals you use as conductors, but the absolute shortest path (with reasonable tolerances) is often a very snaky curve that would require a large number of points to define. It's much simpler to work on a grid, hence the 45° and 90° angles -- this ensures that all trace paths can be defined exclusively by where their corners lie on a square coordinate system, and is much less calculation-intensive. This was a lot of what early graphics tablets (or digitizers) were used for, and some light pen systems.
Having watched my father do a lot of this as a kid, I gather that at least in modern CAD software, you can just pick things up and put them wherever you want, but that the autopathing gets very confused if you do it too much -- mostly it's better to let the computer figure out where the traces go and tell you if you want something impossible in 3D space. And if you screw up anyway, there's always blue wire.
Circuit boards don't have to be the ubiquitous green, either. That's just the color of the solder mask, a lacquer painted all over the parts of the board you don't want solder to stick to. It's mostly tradition at this point, but you can get boards in pretty much any color you like -- the second most common I've see is a dark navy blue, probably because copper traces and white silkscreening stand out best on those two colors. You're welcome to get neon purple, if you can find anyone offering it.

Ren has returned from her slumber and from her 5 hours of bingewatching anime! I saw you opened your requests so I can finally tell you my idea for the kimetsu academy au👀 so I accidentally went down a rabbit hole researching about trains and I found out about the twilight express mizukaze, which is a very expensive and luxurious sleeper train in japan (it even has its own website if you want to see the prices and what it's like on the inside). So here's my idea: one of enmu tamio's biggest dreams has always been to go on a trip on the mizukaze but it's super expensive so he could never do that. But y/n has been secretly saving up money for a long time and now she can finally afford to buy 2 tickets. One day (maybe on their anniversary or smth) she surprises him with the tickets for a week-long trip on that train and ofc he's very excited about it. When they finally get on the train he's even more excited, taking pictures everywhere, looking at everything in awe, and ofc hugging and thanking y/n over and over again for her amazing gift. Then at night when they're in their room on the train he gets more clingy and decides to thank y/n for her gift with something special👀 soooo you know what that means👀🔞👀 ofc this is just something random I came up with but if you do decide to write it then make sure you take all the time you need and don't stress yourself over it!!💝 your mental health and wellbeing are more important than a random thirsty request!!!💝💝 drink lots of water and take care of yourself!!!💝💝

Several months of hard work, staying late and taking on heavier workloads had all been worth it. You managed to get your hands on two extremely expensive and terribly hard to get train tickets.
They weren't just a random pair of tickets; no amount of money could have prevented you from getting them because of how much they meant.
Currently, they hid tucked in your pocket where Enmu would not be able to see them. Not that he'd of been able to anyhow, not with the blindfold wrapped around his eyes.
He had just treated you to breakfast in bed to celebrate your anniversary, but only moments after finishing did you tell him to pack for a week's worth and be ready in an hour. He had made some slightly inappropriate comments when the blindfold came out, but he still clung to your hand for guidance like a lost puppy.
Neither of you had a life of luxury like this; the moment you stepped into the golden-clad station, you had to stop yourself from giving too much away.
"You aren't planning to get rid of me, are you?" Enmu teased after hearing the sound of a train whistle.
"Quite the contrary!"
From then on, you only responded to his quips with little laughs, smiling more and more as you found your cart and got your luggage settled in with you.
You pushed him back onto the bed so he could sit and let go of his hand for the first time since you left the house.
He felt the silk sheets and gripped the covers curiously, tilting his head with a soft smile.
"Well?"
It was hard to deny him the story when he tilted his head, all curious.
"You know how there are some trains you always talk about taking pictures of?"
He hummed in agreement, edging you to continue.
"Well…I think we can cross one of the priorities off that list!" Your hand tugged at the blindfold's knot, teasing it loose until it fell off his eyes.
The train whistle went off again when the train started to trot forwards slowly. He blinked to help adjust to the sunlight flooding his eyesight, but it didn't take long for him to jump up in excitement, even in his disoriented state.
"Darling!" His voice raised to an excitable tone while he raced to the window, looking back at the trail of carts in front of you. He couldn't mistake the train's distinctive green colour for any other.
"Welcome aboard the Mizukaze express!" You expressed with your arms outstretched, spinning and taking in the glory. Enmu engulfed you in his arms and raised you into his arms.
He looked as though he was going to cry from the overwhelming joy passing through him. He could not even begin to believe that you poured this much into an anniversary gift… let alone just for him. It was only now he felt a tad embarrassed for how much his gift paled compared to yours.
"You honour me, darling~" His voice purred with delight, and with one last squeeze, he let you land back on your feet.
He still had his arms draped loosely around your waist as though he didn't want to let go.
"As much as I just loooove all this attention you are giving me right now," you left a gentle kiss on his lips, "dinner is soon, and I am sure you don't want to miss out!"
Enmu would be bouncing right now if he wasn't already racing to tidy himself up. He was lucky you had thought it out beforehand and forced him into something nice. Not that he wasn't going to for your anniversary, but a comfy pyjama day was never deniable.
As you left the room and walked down the hallways, Enmu found it hard not to stop and admire every view you passed. Most of the walls were large windows that saw out the beauties of Japan.
It was nothing like the city trains, nothing fit for a thief, but you brought him here, and he has never felt more at peace.
The dining hall looked like nothing less than a frame from a novel. You found a table for two right against the window that overlooked the ocean and rolling sunset. The sun cast orange rays through it and left rainbow refractions when passing through the glassware.
As you admired the view, the flash of a camera brought your attention back to Enmu, who looked at the photo preview sheepishly.
"I want to ensure I capture at least one photo with you in it." His voice fell to a mumble while he handed the camera off for you to see.
Enmu had captured the exact moment your eyes lit up at the sunset, with the table, train and ocean all in the background. You exited the picture and pointed the lens right at him.
"Act like you don't see the camera!" Despite your warning, you gave him no time to react and snapped a similar image. He snatched the device from you before you could look at the photo, which prevented you from seeing how he looked past the camera at you the whole time.
With pictures out of the way, food was served not long afterward. The meals were unlike any you had ever tried, divine cuisine with a touch of home.
Multiple courses were served, all the while you and Enmu commented on the passing scenery and how it reminded you of things from your upbringing. Some towns and monuments were familiar, such as the Okayama Korakuen, where Enmu said he hoped to take your wedding photos.
"Thinking of marriage already? Never knew this ride meant that much to you!" You teased through a sip of wine, to which he shrugged.
"I've been considering for a while~" You almost choked on your wine and stuttered a mess of confusion. The photographer remained silent and smiled at your flushed face.
After another glass of wine or two, you both had your hands clasped together while returning to your room. Enmu couldn't decide between drinking in your laughs and appearance or the view surrounding you both.
Of every train he had ridden, he couldn't even imagine being on one so essential and caring more about the person he was with.
When you returned to the room, Enmu wanted to blame the wine for his actions. You had fallen back onto the comforting bed to let out a dragged sigh, but he had crawled right on top of you to pepper kisses all over your face.
You could feel his hands dragging down from your shoulders to your waist, where he held you down against the bed.
"Didn't know they served two desserts here," he joked while his hands worked on riding up your summer dress until he could pull it off in one fell swoop.
As you went to retaliate with another quip, Enmu covered your mouth with one hand, pushing a handkerchief between your lips to silence any whines.
"Oh please, I'll do the talking little dove~."
He pressed more kisses into your neck, trailing down between your breasts where he took one nipple into his mouth, lapping at it with his tongue.
The hand over your mouth moved to grip at both wrists, pinning them down into the comforter. He took this opportunity to let his clothed knee snake between your legs so it could carefully grind up against your heat. The friction between your undergarments and his dress pants leaves a tingling feeling between your thighs.
"Oh my…you just look so…" he pressed a kiss to the nipple he had just been abusing before moving to the other "hopeless."
It was hard not to; his attentiveness to every part of your body was almost overwhelming. You couldn't stop yourself from squirming beneath him in hopes of pressing your hips further down on his knee, heart pounding with a need for more.
Enmu smirked upon feeling your desperate movements, pressing his knee against your pulsing warmth harder just to hear how the cloth drowned your whines.
'So eager, so gorgeous.' He thought to himself while the hand on your hip pushed down to grab a string of your panties, pulling them down and tossing them aside.
Unfortunately, he had to remove his knee to do so, but it wasn't long before his rigid member pressed against your clit, rubbing it with slow strokes.
You were both terribly wet, and with every thrust between your folds and along your clit a sloppy swishing was heard.
At last, he used that same hand to push your legs up and over his shoulders so he could adequately align himself with your entrance. With one hand pining your wrists and the other holding down your waist, he waited for your nod before pushing himself inside.
His movements started slow, ensuring he was coated enough to fit into you comfortably, but eventually, he couldn't help himself.
Leant forwards until you were practically in mating press just so he could kiss and bite your neck; Enmu began pounding into you so hard your entire body bounced, kept in place only by his grip on your body.
His groans mixed with your muffled yelps, making a lovers symphony while all pressed together. His cock pulsed and twitched with every clench of your walls around him. If he hadn't practiced so much, he would have never lasted so long with your heavenly body pressed under him.
You unravelled below him in the first minute, clinging to the sheets bundled between your pinned hands as though it was the last tie to reality you had.
Your thoughts could barely keep up with the endless pounding to the point where your eyes couldn't help from rolling out, and your moans broke.
"Hold on for me, angel~ I know you'll want to feel it all!"
Enmu had a load or five of thanking to do; it'd be a shame if you broke so quickly.

Capturing the Mysterious Antarctic Whale Gathering on Film Secret Obsessions is Atlas Obscura's new column where we ask wondrous people to take us down a rabbit hole. This edition features award-winning wildlife filmmaker and television host Bertie Gregory, as told to Associate Editor Sarah Durn. Antarctica is some 9,000 miles from my home in England, and I had been trying to get there for more than a decade to film one of the biggest animal gatherings on Earth. Hundreds of fin whales come there to feast on krill, a tiny, translucent crustacean, but the gatherings are little studied, rarely seen, and have never been properly captured on camera. For a wildlife filmmaker like me, capturing these legendary gatherings became the holy grail. Wanting to go to some remote corner of the globe to film an animal is a familiar feeling for me. It started young. Growing up, everyone at my school thought I was a complete freak because any moment of spare time, during sports practice or whatever, I would slip away to go sneak up on animals. I realized that if I took pictures of the animals I was seeing, it was a great way to get other people excited about what I was excited about—and also explain where I’d been sneaking off to. Before university, I wanted to see and photograph bears, so I emailed a bunch of wildlife tour guides on the west coast of Canada, and said, “Can I come hang out?” I ended up living in the basement of one guide for two summers, helping out on a bear- and whale-watching boat. I was there to see bears, but it was the whales that really captured my imagination. One day I went out with a tour group. Normally, you'd see maybe four or five whales, mainly either grey whales or humpback whales. For whatever reason, there was this freak event, where all of the humpback whales’ prey had come into shore. You couldn't drive the boat more than a hundred yards without having to go around a whale. There were humpback whales everywhere. That was the first time I saw wildlife en masse. A light switch went off in my head: “Wow, this is special.” Years later, in 2018, I had my first tantalizing glimpse of what the Antarctic has to offer. I was there filming for the BBC’s Seven Worlds, One Planet, and the fin whale gatherings were on the long list of animals we wanted to film. One day we saw a gathering of about 150 whales. It was spectacular, but very brief. I think we ended up watching them for only an hour. The German research ship we were on had a tight schedule, and we couldn’t stay. As soon as I had seen that, I was like, “I need to film this.” And I wanted to get it from all angles: in the air with drones, at water level with gyro-stabilized cameras, and diving underwater with a camera. And the only way of doing that, really, is with a sailboat, so you're super-maneuverable. When this series, Epic Adventures, was commissioned, I knew I wanted to try it. It was our most ambitious, most expensive episode. There was no budget for a reshoot. We had to get it. After two years of planning, we gathered an amazing team and set sail on a 75-foot sailboat across the infamous Drake Passage from South America to Antarctica. We could only stay 28 days. The whale gatherings are thought to happen right at the end of the season when it’s possible to visit the southern continent. So we were there as late as we possibly could be before the weather would get really bad. Near the start we saw this small gathering, but it was too rough to film. We knew it was happening, but the days just started ticking by. I felt awful. I’m in Antarctica, surrounded by cool people, looking for whales, it doesn't get better than that. But so many people were counting on us to get this. The idea of not being able to pull it off was really hard to take. Three quarters of the way through the shoot, I remember lying in my bunk, and my friend Dan Beecham, the other underwater cameraperson, was in the bunk above me. There were pieces of icebergs grinding on the hull, and you could hear the anchor dragging because the winds were so strong. And I remember looking up in the dark. “Dan, was this a bad idea? Like, do you think we can actually do this?” He was very calm and very wise, and said, “We can do this. We've done all the right things.” He was kind of the voice of reason in all the doubt. And the next day, the winds were calm. The sea was flat. The sun was out. For the first time, there were no clouds. And just as we were pulling the anchor up, I lifted up my binoculars to the horizon, and that was when I saw what looked like cannons going off in an old sea battle. It was all these whale blows backlit by the rising sun. As we motored towards the whales, the blows getting closer and closer, I couldn’t decide what lens to put on the drone. It's something I’ve done a thousand times, but I knew this could be the only flight. Finally, I was like, “Okay I just need to pick a lens and go.” Then I flew the drone up above the gathering. I have never seen anything so epic on a monitor screen, all these blows going off in front of snowy mountains. There were some 300 feasting whales. But to really appreciate how big these animals are, we needed to get in the water. The biggest danger of the whole shoot was getting lost while diving. It’s very easy to lose divers in the open ocean. We were all kind of on edge when we dropped in. All we could see is blue. The water's below freezing, so immediately you get this brain freeze. And then you wait. For permitting and disturbance reasons, the whales have to come to you. We could feel the whales before we could see them. Fin whales make a really deep noise you can’t hear. But you can feel your guts vibrate. Then a big group of chinstrap penguins came whizzing past us. And then out of the gloom, I see this weird shape. All of a sudden this giant fin whale mouth comes out of the blue and cruises right past me. It was so close we could look each other in the eye. There are no words to describe that feeling—to see an animal that big, that close. I followed its eye with the camera, and the body kept coming and coming. Eventually, the tail came past and I was like, “I’m not going to get shot like that in while.” But soon enough, another whale came along, then two more. All of a sudden there were whales coming from all directions. After we got out and the sun started to dip, whale blows were still going off everywhere. I remember Martha Kane, the medic, turning to me and saying, “You need to take a look at this with your eyeballs. Stop trying to film it and just look at it.” So often with this job, you're so focused on filming that you spend the entire time with your head in a monitor. I remember going up to the bow of the boat and looking out at the whales. It was like looking at a scene of what the planet was before humans messed it up. I'm very lucky that I get to go all over the world and see amazing animals, but literally everywhere we go, a guide or scientist tells us, “You should’ve seen what it was like 10, 20 years ago.” Wildlife populations are nosediving all over the world, but it’s possible to bring some of them back. Fin whales almost went extinct during the commercial whaling era. Now, thanks to protections and good governance, they’ve come back from the edge. And to see this truly wild place, with whales and penguins and the snowy mountains behind them, it was really emotional. This is what happens when you give nature an opening. It'll do the hard work, it will come back. We just need to give it the chance. Bertie Gregory is an award-winning wildlife filmmaker and the host of the new Disney+ show Epic Adventures with Bertie Gregory.
