This is just my personal criticism of Isabella but it bugs me how Isabella treated Mirabel at the beginning of the movie. I know she's not irredeemable or anything but it bugged me how an adult woman was so mean and rude to a 15 year old. I wish the movie was a bit longer so that Isabella apologized to mirabeland their reconciliation was given more attention.
i think really that what we got in the movie was enough of a reconciliation between them because it wasn’t so one sided; mirabel wasn’t just this innocent victim harped on in the dynamic of the family as some of her fans seem to think. she very much gave as much as she got, especially in how she couldn’t put herself in isabela’s shoes to see just how crushing all that pressure was, just like she couldn’t for luisa.
that’s the entire motif of the movie, the toxic dynamic in the family from all parties has left them unable to relate to each other’s struggles or try to change their own behaviour; isabela breaking in her scene with mirabel & them coming to blows before the realization was what was needed to break open that volcano between them.
i really didn’t see their relationship as an adult woman picking on a 15 year old but more two sisters with a bit of an age gap not understanding each other or the troubles they individually held. really viewing encanto as a family wide problem where all are suffering from the dynamic, rather than mirabel or even bruno being the poor victim dogpiled on by everyone aims it more towards the latter description i gave.

Julieta and Agustin are like the dream parenting team.
Agustin is here for constant, unwavering support, his goal is to make Mirabel feel comfortable but to also keep her grounded in knowing who she is and that she is an incredible person. He’s willing to go to any length to protect her, and cares more about helping her through her problems than accusing her of any mistakes she’s made. He relates to her by also not having any powers in an incredibly gifted family, but never uses that to say “don’t make such a big deal out of it” but instead says “i understand what you are going through and I am always here for you”.
Julieta recognizes the imbalance between Mirabel and herself, and always takes that into consideration when interacting with her daughter. She never makes Mirabel feel delusional or over dramatic, especially when Julieta herself can’t relate to what her daughter is going through. What she does always provide is overwhelming care for her, and she never tries to compare her to her cousins/sisters, knowing that those comparisons will always be on uneven footing. They truly just want what’s best for their daughter I love them so dearly

Some Small Encanto nitpicks I had since they aren’t that huge (these aren’t all of them btw, just some)
- The beginning of the movie should have took place A FEW DAYS before Antonio’s ceremony. If it did, we would have got to know what the family was like on a normal day, as well as get a peek and feel of what each dynamic for each family member looked like, (so we know the characters better) since when we meet most of the characters, they’re under stress. I can see why they didn’t go that route though, not enough time for the most part.
- Near the end of the confrontation between Isabella and Maribel, it felt like to me that the movie treated it as if MARIBEL was the one who was in the wrong and had to understand where Isabela was coming from. Which yes, that is what she had to learn but, what about Isabela? The point of their relationship is that BOTH of them had to understand one another, and Isabela didn’t even get a line about how Maribel could have felt with no gift, or even apologized for some of her actions.
- This is a very small stupid nitpick but, I feel like Isabela should have had just a FEW more lines right before she started to sing “What else can I do?” I’ve seen a few people in the fandom say some of the songs felt like they came out of nowhere, which one one hand, it’s a musical, there’s going to be singing so.....but one the other, that obviously doesn’t mean musicals can’t have segways before a character bursts into song, so I can see where their coming from. You could argue that her just bursting into song was part of the humor, since Maribel was just trying to get a hug but...I feel like if they had added maybe a line like “What is this? How did I make this?” Something like that, and then sing lol.
-That deleted scene of Maribel, Agustín, and Felix bonding should have been in the movie and I will die on that hill. You can take out the whole Bruno leaving thing and the story, just keep in the three of them talking and bonding because it would have been such a great scene. It would have gave us insight on how Agustin and Felix felt about the subject since they have no gifts, as well as show that even though people told Maribel she was fine with what she was, she was still insecure. I’ve seen a few people in the fandom say they didn’t like it how it seemed the family just downright pushed her to the side, and this scene would have maybe changed that perspective, showing that even though yes, they all have their own occupations going on, they still like Maribel for what she is. We did get a scene like that in the final film, where Julieta and Agustin tell her she has nothing to prove, as well as Agustin giving her a small pep talk, saying he got how she felt but, this deleted scene feels better. And yes, again, I understand why they didn’t do it, or couldn’t if they wanted to, not enough time.
- This one isn’t major, but if you’ve seen Luisa’s concept art, you might have seen that one of her outfits were going to be with pants. I honestly prefer her with pants, not that she doesn’t look gorgeous with a dress on, but I feel like if she had pants, it would have gotten rid of the “girls need to wear dresses” stereotype, especially since her character has super strength. She still looks really good in that dress though! <3
- This is another clothing nitpick, you know how some of Maribel’s concept art included an overcoat and a hat? I thought she looked downright adorable in those, so I wish we would have had at least one scene with her wearing that. I can tell why they didn’t pick that though for her final design, probably too much for a character to wear, especially if you include her bag lol.
- Anyone else starting to notice that Bruno himself didn’t get that much screen time? And it’s funny because he’s a HUGE important plot point to the story. I feel like he should have had more scenes, but again, not enough time I know, which leads to my last small nitpick for the day.
- I personally think the movie’s pacing is..........fast. I don’t know if people will agree or disagree, but for me, I think the movie is a little fast, especially when it comes to the plot of the magic dying. I don’t want to necessarily say this movie’s pacing was “all over the place” because I feel like that’s a tad too harsh, but when I see a few people saying some scenes went too fast or how things are just jumping from one scene to the other, I can definitely see where they’re coming from. Once again, I’m pretty sure if the writers had more time, scenes would have flowed a little more better than it did in the final film, but you can obviously understand there wasn’t enough time, they needed to move the story along as best as they could.
So there ya go, those were a few of my small personal nitpicks with the movie! I’ll still be working on the character reviews and all, as well as two MAJOR nitpicks I had that deserve their own posts because it’s waaaay too complicated and big, so if you stayed this long, thank you for reading, and what are YOUR personal nitpicks with the movie? Feel free to share as always! 👋💕
