how is it anyone's business what you decide to post? it's your blog, if anon or anyone else don't like, there's this magical thing called the unfollow button. fucking morons.

Yeah it's not the first time I've gotten asks like that (and won't be the last) and that's exactly what I say, "unfollow!" It really is that simple. It's the entitlement for me. Demanding someone to do something on their own blog bitch you better be joking. It's partially my fault because for the longest time this blog was primarily a taylor swift blog when I first started it, so I gained a lot of my followers that way but I'm also no longer 18 and have more interests than Taylor now. Also I made this blog my primary blog (aka multi fandom) in 2019/2020 so it's been years since I've been purely 100% taylor lol. To say that all my other edits 'fall to the wayside' aka flop is so funny. I have shrek gifsets that have 50k LMAO

alie! I absolutely adore this mirrorball x buck set that you made last year! (/post/701462848238403584/) (also I can't believe it's been a year, like seriously what is time?) I was wondering how you did the shattered glass effect in the first gif? in particular how you made the black and white gifs appear distorted within the glass if that makes sense? thank you!!!

ahhh thank you so much renee! literally what is time lol, this gifset is still one of my faves that i made. the shattered glass effect is mostly just a lot of layer masks to be honest hahaha. i'm so glad i still have the psd, so here's how i did it under the cut~

(this tutorial assumes you know how to put multiple gifs in the same canvas and are familiar with layer groups and masks)

I. PREPARATION

first things first, create an empty canvas of your desired size. mine was 540x540 px.

then, you need to find a cracked glass texture. if i remember correctly i simply googled something like "broken glass png", "cracked glass png", because i wanted something already transparent.

(a texture that's something like black lines over a white background definitely works too, you'll just have to put that layer's blending mode to darken or multiply.)

here's the png i used (and a download link for best quality):

and after positioning it into my canvas.

II. CREATING MAIN SECTIONS FOR GIFS

so basically when i did is i sectioned parts of the texture for each gif that i wanted to put. following the texture's lines, i zoomed in and carefuly drew a first shape along the lines with the polygon tool. you can also put a color fill layer behind the cracked glass layer so it's easier to see, like i did.

once you have your shape selected, click on the folder icon (1), then on the layer mask icon (2). it should give you a nice masked group to put gifs in hehe

then i repeated the process until i had all of my desired shapes. i've put some color layers so it's easier to see, but here are my 6 main shapes and how my layer groups look like so far:

III. GIFFING TIME

after screencaping and making all 6 gifs required for each section, you need to put all of them in the same canvas. i simply put one smart object gif layer in each group created earlier. then, i resized and rotated each gif to fit its group (by hitting ctrl + T while selecting the gif layer), as you can see with the gif labeled 6x02 in the layers preview. for the coloring, i went simple with black and white for most of them.

once i have all six gifs sharpened, colored, and placed in each shape group, the gif looks like this. the broken glass texture does most of the work to be honest:

obviously the center gif doesn't have any kind of effect, it's just colored as usual, so i'm not gonna go over it. it's just one gif layer in a masked group.

IV. SUBSECTIONS FOR DISRTORTED EFFECT

okay so for the distorted effect it's even more layer masks! basically i created more smaller sections within each main shapes already, still following the cracked glass texture's lines with the polygon tool and put them in individual masked groups like i did in the second step. here's how i ended up dividing each main sections:

yep, each color here is a different masked group, for example the 2nd and 3rd shape sections:

for each main shape section, you want to duplicate your gif layer the same amount of times as you have subsections within that shape. so if the main shape has 5 smaller subsections, i want 5 layers of that same gif. just make sure to not change its duration or position yet, and make sure the coloring layers/group stays on top of the groups in its shape section. then, simply put one gif layer duplicate in each group. example of my layers for the second shape so far:

then just repeat this until all subsections have its own gif layer.

V. DISTORTED EFFECT

this is the best part! and it's really easy. basically you want to slightly move each subsection by a few pixels, so they're in a slightly different position than the ones next to it.

to do so, select one of the gif layers and with the arrows on your keyboard, move it left or right, and even up or down if it looks good. i do this for all duplicated gif layers, making sure it looks like they're all slightly offset. focus on the cracked glass overlay's lines while nudging the gif layers, it's easy to see how the shapes break when you move them. for example here:

this is really just all trial and error, you just need to move each subsection gif layer by a few pixels with the keyboard arrows until it looks good to you.

here's my result once i've done this for all (23!!) subsections:

VI. FINAL TOUCHES

i don't think i did much else to this before typography besides adding a bit of contrast overall and a thin drop shadow to the cracked layer texture on top of everything. if you have a transparent png this definitely helps to give a bit more dimension to the effect. so here's the final result:

Love in the Air Locations | (Sky's Arc) as told through Sky's Bed

(PART 1) (PART 2) (PART 3)

This final gifset is where we really see a major change in Sky, most notably his healing towards happiness.

9 - Sky wants to be close to Prapai. Sky's feelings are becoming increasingly hard to ignore. Despite Prapai being the subject of his inner conflict, his knee-jerk reaction is still to find comfort in him. The way Sky gingerly crept beside him felt reminiscent of what a young child would do in a thunderstorm. This time Sky sleeps facing toward Prapai, which is his own small gesture of surrender. 'I do need you and I do appreciate you.' Another detail I enjoy is how Prapai treats Sky's dorm like a second home too. He slept in Sky's bed as if he also lives there which emphasises a sense of regularity. This is becoming a 'shared space' and not just 'Sky's space'.

10 - Sky and Prapai make love in his bed. Their first time together was on Prapai's 'turf' and was very much instigated by him. Their second time is in Sky's bed, and instigated by Sky. The reversal is really important as it demonstrates Prapai's priority to put Sky's comfort first (which includes progressing at a pace he agrees with, in a space he feels safe, responding as and when he feels ready). When the wind initially tried to 'force' its way in, Sky only held up more resistance. When you give someone breathing room, they will let down their walls by choice.

11 - Sky being open about himself. Sky willingly starts offering information about himself and his past to Prapai, probably for the first time in the entire series. Sky is happy, he's animated, he's keen and eager to finally share himself with the person he now loves. They've made a safe place that belongs to just the two of them. Somewhere Sky can be himself without any fear, worry or doubt.

12 - Sky calls Prapai when he feels scared. Sky's nightmares still persist. Prapai can't be physically by his side at all times, however Sky now has a direct line if he's ever afraid. Sky has learnt that it's okay to lean on someone, to be needy, to reach out to the person who will support you no matter what. Sky's candidness and honesty about being vulnerable is a huge sign of recovery. He doesn't have to shoulder and cope with things alone. He knows he can cry out for help, because he's aware Prapai will always respond.

13 - Sky and Prapai as a happy and healthy couple. The final scene that features these two in Sky's bed is incredibly sweet. By this point in the series, Sky has completely invited Prapai in and embraced him fully as Sky. The true Sky. Prapai makes him happy. Prapai makes him laugh. Prapai is his now and his future. There's hope.

don't mind me - just some rainy day musings bc sweeney todd 2023 has rotted my brain

someone's tags on a gifset got me thinking about 2023 revival lovett and todd and the special something their dynamic has. there's something about this particular iteration of these characters and their relationship, especially as we see it evolve throughout the show (even as we've seen it evolve throughout the show's run), that just makes mrs lovett's betrayal and her death at his hands hit hard. i know, i know - she deserves it. she lies! she's a lying liar. her deceit is no small thing. any one of us would be incensed to have been misled the way she misleads sweeney. even if a small part of her may have done it, as she says, to spare him having to see what became of his lucy, the larger part was certainly to serve her own interests.

but there's something about how close mrs lovett gets to bringing sweeney around to her this time that just gets me carried away. they're not just business partners - they're lovers, they're co-conspirators, and they're sort of each other's only friend in the world. at this point, he indulges her flights of fancy. they know each other intimately. they joke with each other! he's likely had to listen to countless hours of her prattling on about her thoughts, hopes, and wishes. this is a man who, at this point in the show, is slitting people's throats without remorse. and yet he spends the evening on the sofa cleaning his pipe while he patiently listens to his girlfriend rave about a seaside wedding. when she takes his hand, he doesn't wrench himself from her grasp like he used to. he doesn't get up and walk out, which he could do. he accepts her - her presence, her company, her warmth. he may struggle to admit it to himself, but he does. he can concede that he loves her - just a little bit, though he can't quite bring himself to say the words. sweeney is fiercely loyal to lucy's memory, so much so that he clearly couldn't ever wholly give his heart to someone else, but, in that moment after "by the sea", you can see that he's softened toward lovett. they were both alone a long time before this, after all.

it's not the stuff of great love songs, but it's something. it's almost enough.

this is what ultimately makes the final living moments between them all the more heartbreaking. mrs lovett has always been a sympathetic character to me - a villain, sure, but not without her reasons. she's a woman alone in a brutal world. whether the character is an older or a younger iteration, she's been alone for a desperately long time. when sweeney returns to her after all this time, she sees her moment and she takes it. she's not letting her second chance at life get away from her without a few claw marks.

when sweeney kills her, he sheds no tears over it - but the grudging fondness we'd seen him beginning to feel toward her only serves to emphasize how monstrous of a deception it is. his "you LIED to me" comes out in an anguished roar. when he throws her in that oven, all the light goes out from the world. it takes my breath away every time. though it should, it doesn’t quite feel like justice.

i know not everyone loves annaleigh's interpretation, but i have maintained from the first time i saw this revival that the warmth she brings, the honeyed, deluded, comical sweetness that lures sweeney into believing life with her could be tolerable, if not ideal, was a brilliant choice.

that's why the leap into hell together works for me. some productions have had sweeneys that barely tolerate their lovetts, so a cold diverging of paths makes sense. these two definitely fall into a different category. it makes sense to me for this sweeney and lovett's ultimate fate to be each other. who else would it be? lucy did nothing wrong - she's not going where he's going. having made lovett pay for her lies, they can head on down (hand in unlovable hand!!!!!!!) to live out the almost-enough life they created with each other. and sure, her chirping his ear off for eternity would certainly make an appropriate punishment for his crimes.

I' got on Tumblr in 2013, quit around the porn ban, and only came back pretty recently. I didn't realise that people had actually stopped reblogging things from each other.

I guess the "likes hurt creators" thing might have some validity after all. I still really don't like the tone of entitlement or the idea that expressing your appreciation to OP with a like is an insult instead of an expression of appreciation.

The comment section probably cuts into the reblog counts; people have conversations there instead of in reblog chains, and don't have to reblog an entire post just to point out one quick thing or make the same joke as everyone else, but I don't think that comments account for the ratios in that post, especially since the screenshots don't show posts with hefty comments.

So yeah, guys, likes don't hurt creators, but Tumblr is for passing posts around. If you see something you like, you can just reblog it to be all "look at this cool thing I found". You don't have to worry about adding anything meaningful in a reblog, and if you and all your mutuals reblog the same post twelve times in a row, well, that's just how Tumblr works; if someone gets anoyed they can block the post through xkit.

Eh. I'd beware of anecdata like that.

I used to get like 2 notes a post and no asks ever. On the rare occasions that I reblogged heavily in a hot fandom of the moment for a month or two, I got a lot of engagement once people realized I was a place to go for that fandom, and I particularly got a lot of reblogs because people wanted that content on their own tumblrs.

Currently, I get a decent number of reblogs, but I get a lot more other interaction because things here tend to be discussions and debates and people don't necessarily want them on their own tumblrs.

In my case, I don't like the framing that it hurts creators because that's assuming that a person would have reblogged if they hadn't liked. In reality, they probably just wouldn't have interacted.

People pass posts around all kinds of ways, including pasting links to mine into various discord channels for fandom drama or sending me links to others' posts via chat messages here.

I also don't like the framing that it hurts creators because this only makes sense if you mean that it hurts the ability of visual artists to earn money.

Am I not a creator of a kind? Do I not write copious meta even if a lot of the content here comes from others? My ~engagement numbers~ are not harmed by failing to reblog. My engagement numbers don't matter full stop.

Or maybe, maybe, it's not about money, but it's about clout-chasing nonsense. Boo hoo, my gifset doesn't do numbers because it's not 2012 and I'm not in superwholock fandom now. Oh well. Chase the crowds to another site or chase the megafandoms. That's the only way to get those numbers back.

I do think that some time after 2012, people became increasingly afraid of harassment and may have pulled back on interactions, particularly contentful ones, because of that.

But mostly, tumblr has cleared out. Fewer people are using it, and fewer of the ones remaining are using it actively in a way where it makes sense to fill their own blog with content.

Maybe part of the change is that you can't become a BNF of tasteful curation so easily now, so there's no point in reblogging unless it's for yourself?

Maybe it's gifsets that are out of fashion? I don't know.

I never had much interest in "look at this cool thing" sans commentary back then, and I have little now. I have my activity page set to hide all that.

The changing phases of a site can be interesting, but we need a bit more than one person's top couple of posts to reach any conclusions.

Do ya ever think about Andy and Annie's dance during "Rag Dolly" and feel like watching that specific scene on loop AND sorta feeling like doing their little dance with someone at the same time 'cause hhhhh I love it and those sibs a bunch, it's just the somftest and adorablest dance to a likewise comfy song made more so by Andy's singing and I get a genuine burst of serotonin revisiting it (and lowkey that scene/song alone was what got me to watch the musical for the first time a couple years back :> if ya also have knowledge on who animated their dance or any part of Rag Dolly for that matter that'd be cool to learn about too! but I understand if that might end up being a lot to share :0)

AAAH i love love love that sequence so much!! its the cutest dance it has so much character and Andy's voice becoming so gentle and sweet right after singing No Girl's Toy is just the best thing ever. he doesn't even like Babette he's just helping his sister make a good impression.

what's crazy is looking through this whole book - i'm talking about The Animated Raggedy Ann & Andy - An Intimate Look at the Art of Animation Its History, Techniques, and Artists by John Canemaker (the linked version has no pictures D-:) - Rag Dolly isn't really mentioned that much, despite being essentially the main theme music.

i would love to tell you more for a fact, but i just can't say for sure who animated it, as a lot of scenes aren't credited individually.

for some songs, like Richard Williams doing No Girl's Toy, Tissa David doing Candy Hearts, Art Babbitt doing Blue, and Emery Hawkins doing Never Get Enough, the artists get a section dedicated to them and the main chunk of animation work they contributed. in the credits of the film, Art Babbitt animates the Camel, Emery Hawkins animates the Greedy, etc etc - they were generally in charge of those character-centric scenes, along with a team of inbetweeners, painters, etc.

there isn't one for Rag Dolly, since it's relatively short and bounces between characters. so basically TAKE ALL OF THIS WITH A GRAIN OF SALT!!!

the ONLY expertise i have is that 1. ive flipped thru john canemaker's book and 2. i love this movie so much

what i CAN do is make wild guesses ^_^ and this first little verse as Ann fidgets with her dress and apron just SCREAMS Tissa David to me. here's a pose from that sequence side-by-side with one of her famous (and one of my favourite) Raggedy Ann drawings.

here's something she notes about Ann's first action sequence of falling off the chair (she was set to work on candy hearts before anything else, to really get to know the characters):

and here's a fantastically convenient gifset from Rag Dolly. EVERYTHING!!! her hair falling in her face, the movement of the fabric, the wonderful sense of timing. also note the lack of eyelashes, which isnt exclusive to one artist or anything, but does pop up in David's drawings:

now to go on a tangent about an artist who could well have worked on that scene, and whom i wish there was some more info about!!!

"The only thing that Disney never understood is that to animate girls, one must be a girl!" - Tissa David believed (along with pretty much the rest of the team) that herself and Chrystal Russell (whose work is woefully sparse in the book but very much present in the movie) were the best animators of 'little Annie'. she also worked on Fern Gully; you can find her credits under her married name, Chrystal Klabunde! she supported Tissa as the primary actor for Raggedy Ann, and her style appears as this distinctive, adorable, muppet-y look throughout the film. these pics are examples of, if not her own drawings, then her stylistic influence in these scenes:

she's credited as animating the playroom dolls, but you can notice her influence in Annie come through from the beginning ('I Look, and What Do I See?') to the end ('Home') of the whole thing. like i said, the credits are never too specific, but if i had to GUESS, then this looks like her stuff. we also know for a fact she worked on the first song because of this lovely set of drawings in the book!

here's the sweetest photo of Didi Conn (Ann's voice) and Chrystal together with some clean-up sheets of a shot right before Rag Dolly - when Ann introduces herself to Babette, 'my name is Raggedy Ann, and this is my brother, Raggedy Andy,' (i still can't confirm whether they're her drawings but i wouldn't be surprised!):

anyway tl;dr: i have no way of knowing for sure who was in charge of it, and no doubt a whole team of artists were involved, (and i'm in no way trying to discredit anyone if i'm wrong) but my best guess is you can thank Tissa David for the first part, and Chrystal Russell (now Chrystal Klabunde) for their dance together - the animation changes subtley between those shots. i wish i had more artists/resources to look at, or god forbid a full breakdown of that scene, but at this point i would bet money on David's part in Annie's little introduction.

i had so much fun playing amateur detective so double thank you!!! again i'm probably wrong about ALL of this but it was a blast to reread sections of the book and rewatch different bits of the movie to sleuth around for clues. i hope whatever i have come up with is of some interest to you, and i hope someone learned something about the wonderful artists behind this movie :-D

lysa wanted to marry sansa and robert arryn, does that debunk the ashford theory?

I haven't read the Hedge Knight so this isn't my thing, anon, but Martin has talked about how much he knows regarding the as yet to be written story, and it is a lot. Not only do we know of certain mysteries he's unraveling across the series (R+L=J), he's spoken about how he likes to have things readers will catch on rereads, so it makes sense to me that Martin knew Sansa had been betrothed to to Joffrey, would be marrying Tyrion, that he also knew her endgame romance, and that while writing the novella, he created a little nod to it. Aligning it completely doesn't need to be the goal, anymore than we would expect a carbon copy of pre canon events replaying in canon in any other scenario, but we certainly see the echos and references of pre canon in canon, and I have to think that's the case here.

Also, Sansa is about to be present at a tourney in TWOW, she's talking about her favor, there's this whole pre canon thing about a Stark girl and Targ at a tourney, so it doesn't feel weird to think maybe Sansa was on Martin's mind. And of course, in canon, Sansa is the maiden fair which is interesting when the Ashford girl is referred to as fair maid, and this idea of a revolving door of champions is very reminiscent of Sansa's unfortunate experiences thus far, with men who help her, fail her/hurt her, and then on to the next (the Hound, Tyrion, Dontos, LF...).

A potential match with Sweetrobin doesn't feel like an obstacle to everything that does make this feel like a thing, especially when, it is not merely the matching names that connect the two, it's the details that create all sorts of parallels with Jon, making him seem like the canon Targ this will ultimately be about. Let's revisit that revolving door of "champions" for Sansa, who is the guy who killed her monster in canon? 🤔 butterflies-dragons wrote a lengthy meta in 2021 about all of the Jon hints, and I find there's too much pointing to it all as quite intentional, even with a missing Robin.

Since I've been digging around in old posts and saw a bit of the evolution on this theory, I'll just point out, a lot of people were happy to consider this foreshadwoing for Sansa and Aegon, but the "Sansa is going North" fans rejected that, and it's funny that when people started to consider that her likely path, the theory had to be abandoned when, there's a Targ in the North too.

I'll go ahead and link to a several more posts I saw about it, in case anyone is interested. 2017 post (show verse), possible reference to it in GoT, and a 2018 meta that also considers Jon.

These two 2015 gifsets use the Ashford theory for the Sansa x Aegon pairing (1, 2), these two use Jon or Aegon (2016, 2018), and here's a Jonsa one.

There's also a Jonsa fic inspired by the theory, originally posted in 2016.

hi. so i saw this gifset on the dash, and it's entirely too late for me to be awake doing this but i am now spiraling over kim's outfits. so anyway here goes nothing 👍

(below the cut is my descent into madness. you have been warned)

now when i saw these gifs i began musing in the tags, as one does, so here they are for context:

so once i started thinking i found it impossible to stop (as often is the case with this gay mafia business) and i decided to go through and look at each of kim's outfits. for science

now i know the fandom has looked at wardrobe stuff before, so it's very possible that someone has gone through this already. BUT! i'm already in way too deep here so i'm just gonna go ahead with this dfsdhgjsdf

kim's wardrobe is, to me at least, very interesting. you get a mix of things, depending on how he is presenting himself. for example:

it's hard to differentiate between these styles at times, and i think that's purposeful bc kim appears to dart between personas: beloved singer, distant son, solo detective... the list goes on

so first things first! i was largely right about the jacket thing! in most every one of his outfits, he has some kind of jacket on. however, the first time we actually see him without a jacket is actually in this scene where he gifts chay with the guitar:

okay so i was wrong about that. i think the jacketless look is definitely intentional on his part – to help him seem unguarded, especially since he is giving a gift – but the first instance is still not the scene i thought it was. however!!! there is one thing i'm really excited about, and it's about the next thought i had in the tags...

every time kim wears white it relates to chay.

now you may be thinking, wren. is that really the case, or is this claim a bit of a stretch? and now i answer.... *gestures helplessly* some of this may be a stretch! but i can explain, and i will!

let's look at the instances of kim in white then, shall we?

this, to me, is a quintessential wik look. far more approachable than the full black leather, and even his typical sleuthing fits (although a lot of it is in his mannerisms tbh, remember that withering look he gave big?). now this one miiiight be a stretch... but to me it still fits my thesis bc i feel like kim dressed this way for chay on purpose so he would look more like one of his peers. just my two cents

the confession scene :') this one is particularly interesting bc it's the same jacket kim wears when he's in full dark mafia mode (more on that later). like most instances of kim in white, it's a dark jacket with white peeking through, and this scene might be the best instance of that. he reaches back when chay offers his feelings, and opens the door to.. a relationship? idk but something with emotions

putting these together bc they are two different moments but the same outfit. 1) kim learns that porsche and chay have disappeared, and 2) he contemplates the state of things after korn's "death". i put the family moment here too especially bc of what he tells kinn: "you don't have time to think about other stuff anymore", basically "eyes on the prize". now perhaps this only applies to his older brother, but in the case that we apply it to him.. we can't really be sure whether he is sticking to his personal main goal or breaking from his own advice. i suspect the former bc at this point, he seems to see chay as his main priority, despite his family's situation (again idk if this makes sense, but just. go with it. lol)

dare i say? the sexiest example?? no mafia jacket, full white shirt, and yet, unlike the other white shirt instances, this one isn't about his emotional vulnerability with chay. no no, here he takes out six guys without much difficulty, in an attempt to protect chay (and then he leaves the bodies, but still! the love is there!)

hi there! i'm wondering, what is your take on perrin and dain bornhald? i know those two have like five-ish minutes of screentime all season with about 30 seconds of that in the finale, but i can't get them out of my head. they have such an interesting dynamic and now that it's more complex than in the books (perrin did actually kill dain's father and dain sees it) i'm fascinated to see them reunite.

(also i know you probably don't take requests but it would be fun to see a gifset of them too. for...reasons.)

my take is that it is TASTY!!!! it is DELICIOUS!!! when dain's casting was announced i was like "i bet simple-minded cretins will ship him with perrin now that they are BOTH hot boys in the show, but you won't catch ME shipping anybody with whitecloaks, let ALONE poor perrin!" and now joke's on me, i'm a simple-minded cretin and i am shipping them HARD! but mostly in an "i love mess" type of way rather than an "i legitimately think they should and want them to get together" type of way. although i would not be opposed to a post-last-battle scenario of dain saying "fuck the whitecloaks" and leaving to become perrin's househusband in the two rivers! okay, faile probably wouldn't be into polyamory, but there WAS also that time in TSR when she was like "perrin why don't you go into rand's bedroom alone in the middle of the night and i'll see you in the morning and you can tell me all about it ;)" so maybe she would be down as long as the other person isn't berelain jfkgh

anyway! there were Vibes in their like 4 scenes. mostly on dain's end, just going around calling perrin by a cute nickname okay sir you want to fuck him we get it. dain is gay and homophobic and has a giant crush on perrin that he doesn't know how to deal with, and perrin is oblivious that any of this is happening. and then they had a brief Battle Couple moment in ep8 and i was like

(genuinely i'm pretty sure i did clap my hand to my forehead because i could FEEL myself succumbing fully to the ship in that moment haha it was a powerful moment!)

and THEN!!!! perrin violently (and SO justifiably, not that dain knows or would believe it) murders dain's dad right in front of him!! and dain fucking loses it!! has to be dragged away while screaming for perrin's blood!! TASTY!! DELICIOUS!!!! move over rand/gawyn, we've got a new "you killed my parent and i will not rest until i run you through with my sword in every sense of the phrase because i also want to fuck you so bad it makes me look stupid" ship in town. and i can't WAIT to see what goes down between them in season 3!

and finally, you're in luck because i already was leaning towards making a gifset of them haha it was floating kinda far down on the to-gif list 2x08 gave me but now that you've gotten me thinking about their dynamic again it's bumped up towards the top, so i might possibly do it tomorrow!

Did I really?! Oh god, I'll have to go back and edit that immediately. But yes, if there's any constant in my writing it's that I'm always gonna mix up Akk/Sand and Wat/Thua. The first one at least makes some logical sense. I don't know why my brain can't tell the difference between Wat and Thua 😂

It doesn't help that I'm writing Eclipse fanfiction while binging Only Friends. Y'all know what I mean. That's all that matters.

Hi there! I don't know if I'll be returning to giffing right, but I can definitely right out some reasons here 💌

Honestly, this might sound too obvious or simplistic or whatever, but Mary Costa is her voice and the way that woman's lived her life and the contents of her character and the example she sets daily is a standard everyone should aspire to.

I think Aurora has an appreciation for the world around her that's not generally noticed by others, but is necessary for anyone who wants to have a fully realized life.

Aurora exhibits such a respect and love and reverence for her elders and, while they have some faults, she doesn't resent them in any way and adores them and values them.

Aurora has a heart of gratitude! Raised as a humble peasant, she couldn't be more enchanted or delighted with the cake and dress her Aunts made her.

Aurora is fascinating in how she listens to the rules that are set, and abides by them, but also knows when it's valuable to break them in order to still live a life as opposed to being a chess piece?

Along with the last bullet, when Aurora does break the rules, she does it safely. She wasn't allowed to speak to strangers, and does so with Phillip- however, she doesn't give him her name and she invites him to her home so that he can meet her guardians formerly which is beyond responsible.

She makes choices and decisions, while taking fully into accountable who will be impacted and how her actions could negatively or positively influence a situation. Once Aurora discovers she's a Princess, she could have pitched a fit or ran away or refused to return to the Kingdom, but she doesn't. She understands the importance of her kingdom and her duty to her parents and as a princess and places this above her personal feelings, even leaving behind her true love in the process. This is perhaps the most noble and unselfish action I've ever seen.

Aurora trusts her feelings and instincts and intuition! When she first meets Phillip, she runs away and is very hesitant to accept his advances- until she sees him for who he truly is and he's more tender.

In the cottage, we see her doing chores, so she's responsible, but she's also autonomous. She grew up with three fairies who don't know much about living as a human, and we see Aurora being particularly keen- she understands they're throwing a surprise for her and she knows they're hiding something, etc, but doesn't say anything. She has a fascinating and complex mixture of being raised by much older people but having to be the parent for them, in a sense. She also contributed to the household- they send her picking berries, so she probably was the gatherer and supplied much of the food. She's also just generally self-sufficient in her walk in the woods.

She's so connected to the life around her, enjoying the performance of nature and being so connected to the animals. Remember, she doesn't know people as Briar Rose, so she responds to them as if they were human.

She's perceptive enough to observe life around her and make connections- like how the birds have all found love, and relating that to what she's observed in nature and the longing she feels in her own heart.

I love how highly imaginative she is! She didn't have technology or even many belongings of her own, and so for her to have such a clear vision of her dream prince and be able to dance and sing with the animals the way that she does is very endearing.

She doesn't begrudge her parents! Some characters might have felt that their parents gave them up or would've been bitter that they hadn't known they had parents, but Aurora is so very loving- once she sees them, she runs straight into their arms, with a hug.

Aurora is so caught up with the emotion of life, which is so valuable. In our increasingly technological and antisocial world, it's so easy to see people as numbers instead of individuals, to grow apathetic. But there's something genuinely so sweet and heartwarming over how upset she was that this boy she liked so much would be coming to the empty cottage that night and felt that she would've abandoned him or played some type of a prank on him to let him down. She doesn't even think about being a Princess. Likewise, for all the things she could've wished for- for material belongings or to advance her position or something selfish or, again, material/tangible, she wishes for love.

I love how, in Sleeping Beauty, the Three Good Fairies bestow Aurora with gifts of song and beauty. I think we all have gifts that are unique and individual to us and a formative part of our development and who we are, at the core, is identifying those gifts and making good use of them! Aurora uses her gift of song to communicate with the world around her and to live out her fantasies and to comfort herself and I love how connected she is to what makes her uniquely her!

i know nobody is online rn to read this but ;-; i gotta get it off my chest i love ken so much he means everything to me he's making me so happy and i've needed him so so so bad. he's brought me comfort when my ptsd has been so fucking unbearable and every time i'm having a crying fit over losing my tf f/os or every time i'm having a flashback i ALWAYS immediately IMMEDIATELY think about him rushing to my side, holding me and saying "hey hey it's okay, i'm here, i'm right here" and it's such a relief because i haven't been able to genuinely wholeheartedly believe any character would be willing to do that for me the entire time i've been struggling this year.

i've never gone so long without comfort from f/os, much less being triggered by the ones who used to comfort me the most. so to have barbie and ken right now is like the biggest wave of relief every single day when i wake up and the hyperfixation is still there. sometimes i will literally close my eyes and sigh in relief when i hear a song and my first thought is sebastian or ken or six or... whomever. i love being in love again. i NEED this. i love waking up and my first thought isn't my trauma most of the time now, it's ken. or it's six. or it's barbie. or it's harley. or it's officer k. or it's... yeah you get it. i needed these characters so fucking badly. every time i see a gifset and get excited over it, i feel a rush of gratitude bc self shipping has always been the glue holding me together. it doesn't feel as intense or strong as the SB musical or TF used to make me feel but i am not picky. not at all. i will take anything and i'm praying this lasts for at LEAST another few weeks please

i may not be at a sense of peace right now and i dont know when i ever will be, it could be years, but im so. so. so. so so so thankful to have these characters right now when i've needed someone so badly for so long. i hope ken knows how much i love him ;-; i hope barbie knows how much she has helped me, has saved me from one of my major triggers and has helped me to love and feel safe around the color pink again. i wish they could see me when i'm not so broken but i'm glad they're here even when i'm at my worst, i'm glad they still love me even when they deserve to see me in a much better light

I was wondering after seeing the gifset of Spuffy + Dawn, if there was ever any fics where Dawn/the Key appeared as their child or I guess just Buffy's kid? I know that it doesn't quite make sense for the series since Dawn appears as a teen & their romance appeared later in the series.

But what about any where Dawn was a baby or toddler maybe? And got Spuffy together?

I was wondering what is your take on foreign whump? I can only speak English fluently unfortunately. I see so many lovely sets, a lot from Turkish shows especially but for some reason I just don't get feels in the same way from watching them, especially when there's no subtitles and I can't fully understand what's going on. But even with subtitles, reading that somebody is saying for example, "I can't breathe," just doesn't hit the same way as hearing them saying it and understanding it, if that makes sense? Very annoying.

I have a love hate relationship with it lol. I loooove seeing it on my dash because damn a lot of other countries know how do do whump way better than where I live and I enjoy it greatly. But I don't speak the languages and there's no subtitles!!! So I never have context for all the amazing whump! And that's if I can find videos of it at all! Those Turkish shows especially look amazing! And fell in love with Diogo Morgado thanks to seeing some whumpy gifsets of him in a Portuguese show. Germany, Mexico, Korea, and Russia appear to have some damn fine whump as well. And I wouldn't know about any of it if it wasn't for the amazing people in this community making gifsets and videos of it all. God bless all the whump gifmakers who share the non English whump out there for us all to enjoy. You guys are doing the lords work with that. I just wish I could understand what was happening lol XD

re: the thing you said about kendall probably having issues with food as well, i really agree, i mean succession as a show really has such a good portayal with food where they make it as gross as possible or nobody really eats anything and i noticed kendall barely ever eats at all lmao. his party doesnt have food, he seems very hesitant with that burger in 1x06, plus the neurotic comment about the shaved salad. i know kieran said roman has issues with disordered eating but i kinda get that vibe from kendall too plus he seems like he would be into really weird diets, “health drinks” and workouts

Yeah, I totally agree, anon. I think food is this really compelling thematic touchstone with all of the Roy kids actually, but we definitely get the most on-screen depictions of it with Roman and Kendall.

I can't find my original ask where I talked about this (the tumblr search function is letting me down today!) but I do really like the way that the show utilises food a lot to underscore character beats and dynamics. @waystar-roycos actually has a great gifset here of where some characters use food as punctuation, but I'd argue too that the show broadly uses food as an indicator of power. The moments that immediately spring to mind are, of course, the sausages in Boar on the Floor, Tom eating Logan's chicken on the yacht in 2.10, the donut delivery in 3.02, and the way Logan has all the lavishly prepared food thrown away at the Summer Palace to order pizza instead after he reams out the builder.

There are more moments too - the way the meal is used at Thanksgiving dinner by both Marcia and Logan to strongarm Kendall into doing what they want (and god, you could even argue the way Logan hits Iverson with the jar of cranberries is a direct symbol of violence in power), the way the dinner Greg and Tom share together at the restaurant is them literally tasting power, especially after Greg was stealing scraps of food at work while powerless (another really direct symbol), gosh, even the way Naomi brings food into Rava's apartment I think symbolises a lack of power for Rava especially, but also for Kendall, who not only do we not see eat, but who also has no control over the food, wine, Naomi or situation overall.

Food and the way the show presents it is almost always a marker of who has power and who doesn't, and it's especially focused when it shows the Roy kids engaging with food. Connor tries to exchange it for his father's love with the sourdough, fixates on it at the RECNY ball because he understands it's synonymous with power, and showcases his sommelier skills with Shiv when trying to offer her a job aka leverage her power. We rarely see Shiv engage with food at all, but the key moment we have is when she at least presents that she's cooked for Roman and Connor when trying to get them to sign the letter in 3.03 – which importantly has an added gender dynamic to it as it's one of the few times she's played house at her brothers, and it's directly while trying to manipulate them, and I could honestly talk about that all day, haha – but it's Roman and Kendall who are the most frequently shown with food.

From the start of Kendall trying to talk in his father's sexual business language while eating the burrito (and notably receiving instead of giving) to the powerplay at his dad's birthday lunch, to his fixation over the salad to not eating when Stewy's stealing pastries (again, very notable that Stewy's eating when he's the one who has the power), and like you said, Kendall doesn't have any food at his birthday party. Interestingly to that point too, neither Kendall or Logan eat with Josh in 3.03, while Josh does, a point further underlined when Logan's asking Kendall for water.

Roman in that sense is actually pretty different – he tends to graze, and graze fairly widely. He'll pick at grapes or at his salad in 1.06 and take bites out of fruit like his dad does, and I think it indicates a similar degree of neuroses around food to Kendall, but one that's less fixated maybe on the food itself? Both of them look at food I think as reflections of themselves, but Roman's seems to me to be really grounded in his body and the control he tries to exert over his body, whereas I think Kendall's is more steeped in a sort of overall paralysis.

If food is power symbolically, then Roman can flirt with that power as long as he can control himself, but with Kendall, he either has none, or what he has doesn't fit. It's like a performance. He's not made for it.

It's just this fascinating thing too because I think all four of them understand the ways food can be weaponised, but they each fumble with it. They might have power, and certainly always be around it, but rarely know how to wield it. Roman does come closest, I think, by imitating his father, and Kendall stresses and internalises about the way it appears, Shiv can't work out how to untangle it from her status as a woman, and for Connor, it's a language he struggles to speak, so he comes away offering poor imitations – a sourdough starter Logan will never use and frozen butter. A basic grasp of a language he should be fluent in.

The only character in this show who truly eats what and when they want is Logan, and god, if that isn't just the show in a nutshell.

#although i will add to that last point that i am super fascinated that karl gets to leave to eat during 3.01 #i know that was probably just carting off the actor for a minute #but i think is interestingly a show that the staff have more actual power than logan's children do #which does make sense #after all #the staff can leave #3.08 made it very very clear that logan's children can't #hbo succession #kendall roy #roman roy #shiv roy #connor roy #logan roy #welcome to my ama #succession meta
