Hiii, I'm glad the ask box is open!
Idk if you already did a rec list on this, but can you recommend me old bls, like 90/2000s? I watched Seven days movies and its really good
Oh yay! Seven Days is the best. Actually, I have never done this. Here's a list of...
10+ BL's rated 7/10 or higher that aired prior to 2018
Tumblr media
Just Friends?
Korea 2009 Gaga
This is Korea's first (kinda) upbeat version of a BL featuring already established boyfriends, one of whom is on military leave, trying to decide on coming out, family life, and the future. All of these are themes Korea will pretty much never tackle again, retreating as they would to their bubble. But what a fun little offering this little show was and is to this day. You should watch it.
Tumblr media
Love Sick & Love Sick 2
Thai 2014 YouTube
This is one of those BLs that owes almost nothing to yaoi, although it started a number of tropes that are now endemic to Thai BL. What it is, instead, is a well scripted story of bisexual self-discovery and the inherent chaos of loving someone of the same gender for the first time, all wrapped up in hormones, existing relationships, and communication issues. It is high school queer angst at its messiest. Nothing is going to be easy for these boys because queer isn’t easy but also because life isn’t easy… welcome to adulthood sweethearts.
I'm actually considering a rewatch of these beginning of 2024 in honor of the 10 year anniversary if anyone wants to join.
Tumblr media
Seven Days
Japan 2015 grey
The asker already mentioned it but still, never doubt my ability to recommend this show. One of the best live action yaois ever made, with perfectly structured angst, fantastic characters and acting, and no problematic tropes (rare in Japanese BL). The leads have excellent chemistry although it’s low heat there’s still some really cute mutual kisses.
Tumblr media
Addicted: Heroin
China 2016 Viki
When Chinese BL was good it was very dirty good and when it was bad it was censored. This is the model for that statement: rich kid falls madly for the genius poor kid in his class, starts an aggressive pursuit, includes kidnapping for love, obsession, stepbrother trope, plus some cheating. I love this BL because of what I could have been. Just stop watching it after The Sex Scene. Okay?
Tumblr media
SOTUS & SOTUS S & SOTUS Our Skyy
Thai 2016 YouTube
This is the BL that launched a hundred BLs. No literally, it was SOTUS’s international success that pretty much built the Thai BL industry into the juggernaut it is today. People have baggage around SOTUS, I have nostalgia. Trigger warning on bully hazing. Review and discussion here.
Tumblr media
Make it Right 1 & 2 (but not Beach)
Thai 2016 YouTube (Cheewin warning)
What to say about this show, the origin of the Thai BL pulps? It’s objectively terrible, and not just the leads but the side couple too - yet I love it. I tend to call myself the “world’s foremost Make It Right apologist.” I recognize the issues but I find it utterly charming, especially Tee’s utter devotion to Fuse the baby bi disaster.
Tumblr media
Long Time No See
Korea 2017 Gaga
Catfishing assassins on either side of a turf war who fall in love not knowing they are on opposite sides. Or do they? Good fight sequences, mature characters, high heat, very suspenseful, AND an HEA. If you like KinnPorsche or Kiseki you will LOVE this one.
Tumblr media
HIStory Obsessed
Taiwan 2017 Viki
I weirdly love this but you should know what you are in for: that title. It has a stalking theme meets fated mates and quite a bit of dubious consent. Uke obsessed with seme to the point of losing himself and his identity dies after being rejected, and then has a chance to reboot his life. He decides to save himself by never falling in love. But destiny is a bitch, and this time the seme becomes obsessed with him. This one owes a lot to dark Chinese and Japanese BL, but kind of corrects for the expected sad dead finale by ending happily and playing with a ton of BL tropes. The leads have good chemistry, it's higher heat and the first time Taiwan starts to push that, and VERY DRAMATIC.
Some Others you might consider
Candy and Kiss - Japan 2015
Silhouette of Your Voice (Hidamari ga Kikoeru) - Japan 2017
Red Balloon - Taiwan 2017

Hello guys! It's me!
How are you?
AND IT'S FINALLY HERE! 2000+ YEARS LATER! A NEW FIC!
This one was requested by 💗! Again, I'm sorry that it took so long, my dear 🥺
Hope you enjoy it!
💗
hello Duda! Felix stan here! I’ve been wanting to do an ask for you for some time but i’ve been too shy, your recent post made this feel like it was a good opportunity. I would love if you would do a fic where felix wakes up with a really bad headache, and tries to hide it from his members, but chan takes one look at him and knows he’s unwell. Felix’s condition gets worse throughout the day, especially at dance practice. I would love to see a moment where chan is like, are you okay and Felix tries to say yes but is feeling nauseous and ends up throwing up. hair holding is the best!! A trope i like is a sickie with constant nausea, keeps thinking he’s done and there’s nothing left, but then there’s another small gush and they end up having to camp out in the bathroom or with a bucket. Also the trip of a sickie who likes having company when sick, but doesn’t like having people touch them a lot and appreciates some privacy while throwing up.He can’t keep anything down and has a high fever, headache, body aches, etc, basically he is just miserable. After a day or two of this they take him to the doctor and he has the flu, but Chan and the members take care of him.
HIDING
An idol's life consisted of basically recording songs, filming mvs and other content for their fans, dance practices, concerts, music shows, photoshoots, you name it. Of course, they had breaks throughout the year and sometimes they used them to visit their families or they would record surprise content for STAYs.
Because of their busy lives, injuries, and illnesses were quite common, and to the disappointment of a lot of STAYs, being sick not always kept them from taking part in activities. Even if they were injured or sick they would still attend concerts and other activities.
They would usually sit out any schedules if they were really ill or if the injury was serious and they were in a considerable amount of pain.
The boys were in the middle of preparation for their new album, which meant they had a lot of photoshoots, song recordings, choreographies, and other stuff. It was an overall stressful time, even if they loved what they did.
Since Felix had to minimize his participation during MANIAC promotion because of a back injury, he wanted to give 110% on the other comebacks. He did take part in music shows but his dancing was cut to a minimum, just the amount he could do without further injuring his back.
Today they had mostly dance practice, as they were still in the process of creating the choreography and making adjustments.
Being a main dancer, Felix looked forward to dance practice but today wasn't exactly like that.
He woke up and immediately noticed his head was hurting, he'd even risk saying it was hurting even before he woke up. But because it was winter season, he quickly brushed it off as being due to cold weather.
He got out of bed and went straight to the bathroom to get ready for the day. He wasn't going to take a shower before dance practice because he would get sweaty anyway. He brushed his teeth and washed his face, but when he lifted his head to look at the mirror, he felt lightheaded, he wouldn't say it was dizziness because it felt different, it felt off but he couldn't properly explain what he felt. It was as if he had lost balance.
He took a deep breath and washed his face one more as if to shake off the odd feeling and went back to his bedroom to get ready to leave.
By now Chan was already walking around waking up the remaining sleeping members and met with Felix in the hallway.
- Good morning, Felix
- Good morning, hyung.
Chan immediately noticed something was off about Felix, he wasn't as bubbly as he usually is and he had this slightly pained expression on his face.
- You okay?
- Yes. I'm still a little sleepy.
Chan knew better than to keep pushing them to tell what was really going on, so he accepted the answer and continued with his task.
Felix changed his clothes and decided to take something for his headache so it could go away quicker. He knew he shouldn't do it on an empty stomach but desperate times call for desperate measures. He just wanted that pain to be gone, he didn't want it annoying him during practice.
He ate breakfast with the other members, gathered his stuff and they all left for the company.
They started the day with song recording and things already started going wrong from there. He hadn't noticed it at first when he woke up but his throat was kind of itchy, as he could tell by how it was a little difficult to sing in a lower tone. Every time he tried, some he succeeded but others he had to hold a cough so the members wouldn't get worried.
But Chan always coordinated recording sessions, so he, more than anyone else, knew something was wrong.
- Felix, let's take a break.
He said from outside the recording booth, he didn't want to keep asking what was wrong because he wanted to respect Felix's space. If the boy wanted to say, he would.
Felix was more than grateful for the break his hyung gave because his headache had increased a bit during the recording.
While the other members were recording he went to get some water then got back to the studio and stayed with Chan, Changing, and Han.
After a few minutes, he started dozing off and thought the medication was finally kicking in but strangely, the headache wasn't going away, it was getting stronger.
It hurt him to admit but even the members talking was starting to annoy him. And he kept thinking how he'd be able to practice later, with that blasting song inside the room.
At one point, he completely zoned out, he kept his eyes glued on the floor and it took him a few seconds to realize the members were calling him.
- Yongbok-ah?
- Felix? Hey, Felix?
Chan and the others said gently tapping him on the shoulder.
- Hm? I'm sorry
- Are you okay?
- Yes...I guess I'm a bit tired...
- It's your turn again and then we'll wrap up this part.
- Okay.
Felix got inside the recording booth and took a few deep breaths to control that annoying ticklish sensation in his throat. Fortunately, the first recording session ended great and he thought his hyungs didn't notice anything wrong.
They had a little break before the other recording session and then a lunch break.
Felix just lay on the couch and covered his head with his hoodie, the light was starting to bother him a little bit and honestly, he just wanted to rest.
Eventually, Hyunjin came in and cuddled with him for a bit before returning to work. Felix wasn't sure how he felt about that, at that exact moment, if he wanted to or not but it definitely felt comforting.
The other half of the recording session went better than the first and was quicker as well.
Lunchtime came as fast as everyone wanted, except Felix. Even though he should be hungry because he ate very little at breakfast, his stomach had a burning sensation, because he decided to take medication on an empty stomach.
While all the others were happy to get some food in, Felix was facing a difficult choice - eat something even though his stomach didn't seem like it would accept it well or not eat, worry his hyungs, and risk passing out during practice.
He went with the safer option, but he decided to eat a little less than usual, which he thought the members wouldn't suspect anything, after all, one's appetite can change a lot.
He ate his lunch, way too slowly for his own liking, not only because his stomach didn't want anything, but also because the tingly sensation in his throat had turned into a mild sore throat.
He did manage to eat everything and drink some juice but afterward, he felt full, way too full for someone who ate so little. The burning sensation was now replaced with a feeling of being bloated.
Thankfully, they had a little rest before beginning dance practice, after all, doing harsh movements right after eating is never a good decision.
Although lying down right after a meal is not the best for your stomach, that's everything he needed right now. And that nap right before dance practice was heavenly. For a moment, he didn't feel anything, no sore throat, no headache, nothing. He thought that all he needed after all was a proper meal and a good rest. But he would soon find out things were just starting to get bad.
Creating new choreographies can be challenging and idols are known for their performance, so to master a choreo, sometimes they'd spend an entire night on the company.
Lee Know was one of the main dancers of the group and the one who usually helped create and perfect the choreos. Dancing sessions could be fun and sometimes as serious as one could imagine, after all this was their job.
Because of his back injury, Felix couldn't take part in all dance practices so now that he has recovered he wanted to give 110% of himself even during practice.
He wasn't going to let a headache and some mild sore throat disturb him, not now that he could actually dance.
Practice began, easy at first, since they were still in the process of coming up with the steps. Much to Felix's misery, this part required listening to the same song over and over again, bit by bit, to get the rhythm and the beats and then start to create the choreography.
It started with nice, easy steps, counting and following along to the beat slowly, not needing to put so much effort as of the moment. But then it started to get bad.
By the nth time the song was playing, Felix's headache was almost throbbing along to the beat, making him feel frustrated. Since they were not actually dancing yet, he stepped away to drink some water and calm down to see if he could get rid of that throbbing sensation.
He didn't notice, but the whole time, from the moment he stepped into that room, Chan kept checking on him. He didn't want to frustrate Felix by insisting that he sat out that session but he would step in if things got worse.
Again, the same process repeated, listening to the song, counting, steps, repeat. It went on for about an hour before they had basically a whole potential choreography ready to be fully rehearsed.
By now, Felix's headache was almost begging him to stop and rest, the throbbing sensation from before had increased.
Before they started the actual rehearsal, they had a little water break to make sure no one was dehydrated. Felix grabbed his water bottle and took careful sips of it, something felt strange in his stomach. But as he finished drinking, he had a small coughing fit that caught the others' attention.
- Hey, Yongbok-ah, are you okay?
- Y-yes, hyung. I just choked.
He said trying to laugh a little bit. He was now wondering for how long he would be able to keep the facade of "being well" up.
They finally started practicing the newly created choreography, and just like always it had really dynamic movements, much to Felix's misery this time.
As he danced, he felt every muscle in his body start to ache, as if he had been dancing since last night, non-stop. And Chan didn't take his eyes off of him not for one minute.
As they finished passing the choreography 2 times, Felix broke into a harsher coughing fit, to the point where he almost gagged.
- Hey, Yongbok-ah, are you sure you're okay?
- Y-yes, it's just dust, it made my throat really itchy.
He wasn't lying, his throat felt itchy, but his stomach was also acting weird. It felt heavy, gurgly.
He took another sip of water and took deep breaths before they started dancing again.
As they were passing the choreography for the 5th time that day, Felix's body started to show clear signs it didn't want to keep moving, but he was determined to practice, he didn't want to sit out anything this time. However, just his force of will wouldn't be enough this time.
Each movement just made his head sting in pain over and over again. And his stomach as well, he could feel everything sloshing around with every movement he made.
Each step just made that feeling worse, as if his stomach was spinning inside him. He tried to keep himself focused on the dance but the steps by the end of the choreo were even more dynamic, everything he ate that day was threatening to make an appearance soon.
Him wanting to keep dancing wasn't enough, as his body started to not keep up with the rhythm anymore, his movements became sluggish, which was unusual for him. Chan and Minho noticed that and the leader glued his eyes on Felix for the rest of the choreography, if anything happened he'd be there to help in a flash.
The song ended, finally, and everyone just fell to the ground, exhausted. Felix just stopped and blinked a few times, trying to get rid of the throbbing sensation in his head. Now that he had stopped moving, everything he was feeling while dancing, intensified.
The nausea was basically unbearable, everything was sloshing around and he could feel it start making its way up his chest, and to top that, he was feeling dizzy as well. He straightened his back and took deep breaths as he started swallowing the thick saliva filling his mouth.
Chan made his way close to Felix and put a hand on the boy's shoulder.
- Hey, Felix, are you okay?
Feliz wanted to say yes, but he knew there was nothing he could actually hide from his leader.
He tried to answer but was immediately cut off by his stomach contracting and sending hot liquid up his throat faster than he could've reacted.
He bent over quickly as his stomach contracted one more time making him gag harshly and making vomit gush out of his mouth hitting the ground with a sickening sound.
- Oh my god! Felix!
Chan said as he started rubbing his dongsaeng's back. Everyone in the room was shocked by the sudden situation, some froze and some ran towards him to which Chan immediately told them not to.
- Don't. Give him some space and get me a trash can.
The boys did as their leader told them and quickly grabbed the trash can in the room and placed it under Felix's mouth.
He grabbed his knees for support while Chan held his hair out of his face. Felix spat out a few times before his stomach let out a concerning sound and sent even more chunky vomit out of his mouth, now hitting inside the trash can. He didn't even have time to catch his breath before throwing up one more time, now with such force his back arched painfully and vomit came out of his nose as well.
- Breathe, Felix.
Chan said as he tied the poor boy's hair into a bun and changed his approach. Now he decided to rub Felix's chest and tummy to try to provide some comfort.
- I'm right here.
Felix spat out a stream of saliva and he thought he was done, that everything was out.
- Straighten your back a little.
Felix did as he was told and took deep breaths. For a brief moment, he felt some relief. But it was indeed just for a brief moment, his body was decided to get rid of everything inside his stomach.
He bent over again and Chan proceeded to rub his chest and tummy to try to help him vomit whatever was still upsetting his stomach.
Chan pressed down gently on his stomach, which answered quickly by sending up another thick wave of vomit.
- There you go. Get it all out.
Another wave of watery vomit came right after, mixing with the putrid mess inside the trash can. After this, he kept gagging and gagging but nothing was coming out.
- Felix, I think you're done. If you keep forcing it you'll hurt your throat.
He handed him a bottle of cold water so the boy could rinse his mouth.
- How are you feeling?
- Awful, hyung...
- Let's sit down for a bit. Kids, get your stuff, we're leaving early.
Chan guided Felix to sit on the couch with him because the boy was looking pale and he could actually faint at any moment.
- How long have you been feeling like this?
Chan asked while still rubbing Felix's back.
- Since morning... It started with a headache but things just escalated...
- What are you feeling now?
- My head hurts a lot and my stomach is churning...
- Maybe you caught a cold?
- Maybe...hyung can we go home? I want to sleep...
- Yes.
The kids grabbed their stuff and Felix's while Chan helped him walk to the van.
Felix sat beside Hyunjin and the poor sick boy quickly fell asleep on his shoulder. Chan, who was in the front seat would turn around every now and then to see how the boy was doing.
- How is he?
- Still sleeping.
The boys answered. For half of the ride, everything was going smoothly but then Felix's stomach let out a loud gurgle, that everybody in that car that didn't have earphones on, heard.
He opened his eyes and lifted his head from Hyunjin's shoulder.
- I'm gonna throw up...
The boys quickly started to search for plastic bags or anything he could be sick in. And thankfully Minho had a plastic bag with him from something he had bought to eat.
He passed it to Felix who barely had the strength to hold it. Changbin who was sitting beside him as well, helped him hold it as the poor boy proceeded to throw up one more time, Hyunjin rubbing his back throughout the process.
- Felix, do you want us to pull over?
- N-no-
Was all he managed to say before another bout of vomit escaped from his mouth, mixing with the liquid inside the bag.
- It's okay. You're okay.
Hyunjin said as he continued to rub his back.
Thankfully, they got to the dorms quickly and proceeded to take care of the poor boy.
Chan helped him out of the car and wrapped his arm around Felix's waist to help him walk to the elevator.
Once inside the dorm, the leader gave out the orders to try to get Felix comfortable as soon as possible.
- I'll stay with him so he can take a shower. I want you guys to get a change of clothes for him, make some light soup, and get his bed ready.
- Yes, hyung.
It was the right choice to stay with Felix inside the bathroom because a few minutes into the shower he started to feel faint. All the exertion from the day caught up to him in a flash.
As he was taking his bath, he felt his feet start to sink beneath him, as if the ground had suddenly become like jelly and he saw black dots in his vision. To add to his misery, his stomach also responded to the sudden malaise, building up a strong nausea.
- Hyung...I feel weird...
Chan who was looking at his cell phone and still keeping an eye on Felix, quickly tossed the phone aside.
- What's wrong?
He said, already hurrying to his dongsaeng's aide.
He managed to get Felix before the boy collapsed and carefully guided him to sit down.
- Do you feel like you're gonna throw up?
- Hmm...
Feliz gagged right after answering and felt liquid coming up his throat. He just leaned forward as a stream of thick bile came out without much effort, his body was tired and his stomach was basically empty. Chan just rubbed his back, and held his hair back and patiently waited until his dongsaeng felt a little relieved to help him back to the shower.
When he finished showering, he felt as if he had only the strength to go to bed, but he needed to eat something so he could take some painkillers for his headache.
Chan walked out of the bathroom supporting Felix and guided him to the couch where the boy almost sunk into the cushions. In a few moments, the others appeared with some soup for him.
- Thanks, guys...
He said, really softly.
The soup smelled nice and it tasted even better. He ate it very carefully so as not to upset his stomach and risk throwing up everything.
It took some time but he managed to eat everything and right after he started to doze off.
Chan woke him up very tenderly to take him to the bedroom.
- Hey, Felix, let's go get some sleep.
Felix barely opened his eyes, so Chan helped him up and took him to the bedroom. He lay him down and covered him and within minutes, the sick boy was fast asleep.
Chan's instincts told him it would be better to stick around in case Felix needed anything so he told Lee Know to go sleep in his bedroom, as the boy was probably tired from teaching all the choreography.
And he wasn't wrong, a few hours into the night, Felix started to feel even worse than before.
He was tossing and turning on the bed and no position was comfortable. His headache was still there and his stomach was acting up again.
It started doing flips, so he tried laying on his back and covered his eyes with his arm.
On top of that, his whole body was aching and he was shivering too much for his own liking, he was drenched in sweat as if he was inside a sauna but he felt too cold to take the blanket off.
Because he was shivering, his body was tense and kept contracting with each shiver which made the nausea build up.
He felt something come up his throat, his mouth started to fill with saliva so he started swallowing convulsively while keeping his eyes squeezed shut and taking deep breaths.
It passed for a few minutes so he decided to turn to lay on his side again, but that was the last straw for his stomach. The movement made it jump and sent its contents rushing up, he knew he wouldn't be able to swallow it down this time. He needed to get to the bathroom otherwise he would throw up all over the bed.
Chan, who was sleeping close to him, noticed all the shifting and woke up to assess the situation of the younger boy.
- Hey, Lix, is everything okay?
- Hyung, I need to throw up.
Chan took a quick look at Felix and noticed he looked pale and at the same time really flushed and his bangs were sticking to his forehead. He helped the young up and took him to the bathroom.
However the sick boy's temperature did not go unnoticed, the moment Chan touched Felix's skin he was alarmed by how hot the boy was.
- Oh my god Felix! You're burning up!
Getting to the bathroom, Chan immediately guided Felix to kneel in front of the toilet as he would probably pass out if he kept standing.
As soon as he was down on his knees, his stomach contracted sending what he had eaten a few hours ago gushing out of his mouth.
- There you go.
Chan said as he held Felix's hair and checked his forehead.
- You're really burning up Felix.
He felt the sick boy shivering under his touch as he rubbed his back after tying his hair into a ponytail.
Felix's stomach contracted forcefully arching his back to the point Chan grew concerned about his previous injury.
Watery, gooey vomit escaped his lips hitting the toilet water with a sickening sound, almost making Chan gag.
He was getting really concerned, it's been some time since he last saw Felix in such a state.
Felix coughed a few times before his stomach sent even more vomit up making him arch his back. Chan kept rubbing his back, changing between up and down and circles.
After a few more rounds of mostly gooey vomit, Felix was just gagging unproductively and panting. He felt too hot and suffocated, as if he was inside a sauna and couldn't breathe and his throat was hurting a lot.
- Felix, straighten your back a little, I think you're done.
Chan said, flushing the toilet to get rid of that awful sight and smell.
The sick boy was shivering even more than before, Chan kept rubbing his back, but even the slightest touch was hurting, his skin was on fire, and even his clothes were hurting him.
He started crying, everything was too much, his head was throbbing, his throat was aching and his whole body burned.
- Hyung, it hurts! I just want it to stop!
The boy said breaking down in tears.
Chan proceeded to rub the sick boy's chest trying to provide him some comfort and calm him down.
- I'm right here. You'll be okay. Let me take your temperature.
He grabbed the thermometer that was inside one of the drawers of the bathroom cabinet.
- 40°c! Oh my god, Felix! We need to go to the hospital. We need to find out what's going on.
Felix was barely there, he felt too tired from everything and he was getting sleepy.
- Hyung...I'm tired...I just want to sleep...
- It's okay. You can go to sleep, hyung is right here with you.
By now, all of the boys were already up and just waiting outside the bathroom, as they heard some noises coming from the inside.
- Chan hyung, is everything okay?
- No. Felix is really sick. He needs to go to the hospital. Can someone bring my phone?
Lee know quickly got back with Chan's phone and handed it over to the older boy who called the manager.
- The manager will be here soon. I'll go with him. The rest of you stay here and try to get some rest. I'll keep you guys updated.
- Okay, hyung.
The manager arrived, Chan picked Felix up and took him to the car.
He lay all his weight on his hyung, he wanted someone to take care of him, he wanted comfort and he also couldn't control his body anymore.
In a few minutes, they arrived at the hospital, thankfully the manager had contacted their doctor before leaving the dorm so he was waiting for them.
- Felix, we're here. Can you stand?
- No...
- Okay, I'll help you. Come on.
Chan helped Felix out of the car, wrapped his arm around the boy's waist, and walked with him to the doctor's office.
Taking just a glance at Felix, the doctor immediately told the nurse to put him on IV drips, given how pale he looked, he knew he was dehydrated and that the case was serious.
- Yongbok-ah, what happened? What are you feeling?
The boy could barely keep his eyes open and he was afraid that if he started talking, he'd throw up again.
- I started feeling weird when I woke up... I thought it was just a headache but it kept getting worse. It started throbbing, my throat started hurting and my stomach felt weird... I ended up throwing up and when I was sleeping I started sweating... And Chan-hyung noticed that I had a fever...
- We'll take a blood sample and see what's going on. For now, you'll stay here on IV drips because you're obviously dehydrated and malnourished.
After a few minutes, the doctor came back with the results.
- Well, from what we discovered from the blood sample, you have the flu. That's why the symptoms got worse throughout the day, and they were aggravated because of how much strain you put your body through during dance practice. I'll give you the prescription for the medications and I advise you don't take part in any sort of activity for at least a week. Otherwise, this flu won't get better and it could actually get worse because your immune system is already under pressure.
- Understood.
- You're free to go once the IV drip is done.
- Thank you, doctor.
Felix was coming in and out of consciousness because of how weak he felt and how high his fever was. Chan sat by his side and texted the others to give them an update on Felix's health.
- Hey kids.
- Chan-hyung! How's Felix?
- He's on IV drips right now. He was too dehydrated and malnourished when we got here. They took a blood sample and found out he has the flu.
- But it was so sudden...
- Actually, he said that he felt weird since morning but his symptoms escalated too quickly throughout the day. The doctor told him to stay put for at least a week. The manager will see how our schedules will change.
- Understood. You're coming back to the dorm, right? He won't need to stay in the hospital, right?
- The doctor said we could go home once the IV drip is done. Can you please change Felix's bedsheets and get him a change of clothes, for when we get back?
- Of course, hyung.
- See you soon. Bye.
When Chan finished texting the kids, Felix woke up for a while, still looking green.
- Hyung...I wanna throw up.
Felix said already trying to get up.
Chan quickly got a sick bag for him and held it in front of his mouth since the boy barely had the strength to hold it.
Felix opened his mouth and vomit gushed out, watery and gooey just like before, because his stomach was completely empty but still wanted to make him feel miserable.
He burped which brought up another stronger wave that arched his back and Chan placed a hand there and started rubbing circles on it.
- It's okay. It's best if you let everything out. Hyung's right here.
Felix coughed up another wave mixing with what was already inside the almost completely filled sick bag.
- Felix, you're just dry-heaving now. Your throat is already hurting, if you keep doing that it will only worsen.
Felix knew that but he felt nauseous either way, he didn't want to get away from that sick bag, even though he felt his stomach empty, there was still this lingering feeling that he was going to throw up again, anytime.
- Come on. Let's breathe together okay? Take a deep breath in...hold it...and now exhale... Keep going...
Chan guided Felix through this pattern for a few minutes before the boy felt somewhat less nauseous, at least better enough to lay back down and wait for the IV drip to end.
In the meantime, the nurse noticed Felix had thrown up again and came back with an intravenous nausea medication.
- This will help with your nausea. It will feel strange at first but it will work in a few minutes.
- Thank you.
Felix went back to sleep and within 1h30 the IV drip was finally over.
He did feel a little better, the nausea wasn't completely gone but it had died down a little, thankfully. The doctor gave them the prescription and once again told them that Felix needed full rest to be able to get better.
The ride back to the dorm was calm, with no incidents along the way, with him dozing off all the time.
Arriving at the dorms, 6 worried boys were waiting for them.
- How's he, Hyung?
- The doctor said he has the flu. He told him he needs a full week of rest.
- There's a set of clothes in his bedroom.
- Thank you, guys.
Chan was taking Felix to his bedroom when the boy halted on his feet.
- Hyung... I'm gonna throw up...
- Okay, come on.
He brought the sick boy to the bathroom and guided him to kneel in front of the toilet.
Felix opened his mouth and coughed until he gagged. He kept gagging but nothing but thick saliva was coming up. A wet burp brought up a tiny wave of watery vomit but nothing more, leaving the boy feeling miserable.
- Felix, I know you're not feeling well, but your stomach is empty...
- But...I feel too nauseous...
- I'll bring an antiemetic to you, wait here.
Chan came back with a pill, that thankfully was a capsule because Felix was sure that if he tasted any medicine he'd throw up in a second. He took it with a sip of water and waited in the bathroom in case he felt sick again.
After some time, his stomach was feeling a little less nauseous.
- Do you think it's safe to go to the bedroom?
- Yeah...
- Can you stand?
- No...
- Okay, I'll help you.
Chan picked him up and carried the sick boy to the bedroom.
He lay him on the bed and covered him with a blanket to help with the fever. He also brought a bucket and placed it close to Felix just in case something happened during the night and also to not make the boy walk all the way to the bathroom every time he needed to throw up.
Chan settled beside Felix, wanting to be there to help at any time.
The others also gathered up in the room to keep them company and also to be of help.
The following days consisted of numerous trips to the bathroom, with Felix barely managing to keep anything down. His fever spiked every so often, with the boys taking turns to take care of him.
Needless to say that as he was getting better, the others fell ill one after the other, because they didn't want to leave each other's side.

please give me your iwaoi fanfic recs 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Help I'm so dead. I just freaking deleted my iwaoi recs list and now I have to make it again 🥲🥲🥲 freaking Tumblr. You guys better eat this up cause im remaking this all over again. Okay anyways, ver 2: my iwaoi fanfic recs list:
(Not in any particular order, most have smut, all can be found on ao3)
1.) Coffee king- oiivkawa- the starting point for my love of cafe au's, best coffee au fanfic ever period, so so so fluffy, oikawa is the cutest cafe server and he falls HARD for the cafe's new kind-of-regular, Iwaizumi
https://archiveofourown.org/works/10721739/chapters/23756658
2.) Wedding ring- crazychipmunk- angst, heart-rending, surprisingly made me cry, happy ending tho, super good angsty iwaoi fanfic, I promise its not ALL angst tho😭, it's super fluffy too
https://archiveofourown.org/works/25393174/chapters/61577038
3.) The courtship ritual of the Hercules beetle- kittebasu- bugs? Oikawa is still a nerd its just for bugs now, I'm just gonna copy and paste the summary cause I love it and it sums it up perfectly: "Tooru is pretty sure he could manage the mating habits of a mosquito. It’s the mating habits of people he can’t seem to get right." I love fics like this that preserve the characteristics of the characters even though it has nothing to do with volleyball
https://archiveofourown.org/works/6422014/chapters/14701168
4.) That's your husband?!- a_very_smolfrog- just😌🤌, iwaoi being simps, oikawa is a physics professor and iwa is a volleyball coach au, makki is iconic as always, iwaoi being the iconic: childhood friends to lovers and we adore eachother but we will definitely expose eachother if need be trope, I'm so sad this is so short (2000 words), it should've been longer😔, I adore them all
https://archiveofourown.org/works/29412615
5.) Conquering the great king- suggestivescribe- this fic is actually so iconic, just perfection at its max tbh, just iwaoi being iwaoi but make it smutty and make it at the office, iwa is an editor and tbh I don't remember or know what kawa is, it's some office job, not kuroo being a slay as always, honestly has to be one of the best iwaoi fanfics of all time
https://archiveofourown.org/works/3301085?view_full_work=true
6.) Until the sky opens up- iwaoidk- the summary lowkey did them dirty, not really tho cause I still read it😋🙄 but this was way better than I thought it was going to be, like iwaoi accidentally gets kissed by every member in his team, I'm still convinced that they did all that to make oikawa GET A MOVE ON, oikawa confesses and he's a little dense but so is iwa so whatever, they're perfect for eachother like that😻
https://archiveofourown.org/works/5008225
7.) Looks like it- ivyfics- iwaoi have been dating for a while now, they just didn't know it, iwa is very competitive in his knowledge on tooru, cute and short, recommend if you want something to speed read for some lighthearted fluff
https://archiveofourown.org/works/11729118
8.) Six month lover- afuzzyowl- I'm gonna be completely honest, I haven't finished this fic yet BUT I PROMISE ITS NOT CAUSE IT WAS BORING, IT WAS SO GOOD, I just never got to finishing it cause I was busy but thinking about this fic makes me actually want to finish it, oikawa makes iwaizumi a PowerPoint presentation on why they should date, oikawa is absolutely utterly in love with iwaizumi (same, like who isn't?), oikawa is trying to convince his best friend to fall for him, I adored this and now I need to go finish it, edit: HELP IM BASICALLY FINISHED AND ITS SO GOOD BEHESKJSA ITS SO SO SO GOOD I CANNOT EVEN FIND THR WORDS
https://archiveofourown.org/works/14100501/chapters/32488506
9.) Kilometer zero- internetpistol (orphan_account)- a classic iwaoi fic, childhood friends to lovers, slowburn, it's just them in a class well done iwaoi fic, there's nothing else to say, it was really good, "just gay yearning"- the author's ao3 tag
https://archiveofourown.org/works/28732224/chapters/70448769
10.) The Pda jar- orphan_account- iwaoi is obliviously in love, everyone knows it but them and they're all tired of their pda so they make a pda jar, it's really the only way to make them see their idiocy😌, this is why I love aoba johsai folks, live love laugh seijoh, highkey hilarious

Our Skyy 2 x The Eclipse Ep 2 (Finale) Stray Thoughts
Yesterday, we returned to The Eclipse and saw our student prefect boys and their boyfriends. We got to enjoy Akk and Ayan’s honeymoon camping trip before returning to the world and stumbling over some of their fundamental differences. Kan and Thua are being cute, but Thua would much prefer they engage in activities GMMTV is not brave enough to show. We all got to lament that Akk and Kan are still fantasizing about their boyfriends rather than engaging with them directly about what they want from each other. Wat is that film friend who definitely made a watch list for Akk that included Brokeback Mountain (and which I hope includes Big Eden (2000)). Namo is here, proving that Pawin was the primary scheduling conflict for Our Skyy 2.
On the political front, Golf continued to explore the ideas of the private and the public, and how these two impact each other. We also got to appreciate Golf’s deep love for Thai cinema itself. Finally, Golf continues to voice their frustration for what we might call keyboard warriors.
I’m having a great time, despite my need to voice my own issues with how we talk about these shows earlier.
I can’t listen to this intro anymore. I’m skipping it for the rest of Our Skyy 2.
I don’t want to get flagged, so I’m just gonna say I noticed how flexible Khaotun’s back is.
These two are so fun when they’re being sweet with each other. I hope Akk gets better at telling Ayan that’s what he likes best.
Love Wat and Namo teasing all of them. Ayan’s satisfied smirk at Kan and Thua spending the night together was priceless.
I love how meta Golf can be sometimes. “They’re talking about caring too much about others versus caring only about themselves…but it’s still the same story as before.” Also, Pawin is available. Please hire him.
Khaotun and First are so incredibly expressive, and you can feel how easily the emotions flow between them. You can see Akk and Ayan choosing each other even as they don’t know how to get past this fundamental disagreement they’re having.
“I think people hate or are afraid of something because they don’t really understand it.” “We’re so happy to be a part of your stupid dream.” GOLF IS COMING FOR NECKS!
Love seeing gay people on bicycles.
I’m enjoying the way these two kiss. It’s been satisfying. First and Khaotung follow through on the physicality between their characters after the lips stop touching so you know how they’re feeling.
I kinda like this brown outfit they put Thua in.
I feel like the others maybe know that Ayan has a surprise planned for Akk?
Akk, baby boy, it’s okay for you to tell your boyfriend that you want him around on your special day. So sad that it’ll be years before he stops putting everyone before himself.
Namo said You Can’t Text Message Breakup.
I’m sorry, but there should not be this much discussion at the urinal. Also, don’t touch your friend after using the urinal.
I love that Golf always cameos in their work.
There’s a kid from Niyomsil school here? I now need to investigate the history of Golf’s friendship with Au.
Okay, I cried a bit at Wat’s stunned reaction to winning an award.
I love film festivals so much!!
First is a great crier, but I still don’t like the birthday surprise trope.
Oh good. The friends knew about the surprise.
Sani smiling fondly at the boys also was an excellent choice.
I continue to love the text-level messaging in this show. You have to keep going even if you don’t know if there’s light at the end of the tunnel because you’ve done it before. You can do it again. You will do it again. That felt so honest from Kan.
I like how far along Kan and Thua have come, and I hope Thua gets the relationship he wants from Kan.
I have a lot of hopes for Akk and Ayan. They’re going to deal with long-distance romance and the continued difficulties of their perspectives, but the bond between them feels real.
They really gave us a shower scene and a domestic montage. We eatin’ good today.
Oh, I enjoyed that final “I love you” bed scene into a very suggestive removal of a shirt makeout and purposeful thigh grab. Very excited to see what First and Khaotung deliver in Only Friends.
Vice Versa next week with a secret baby trope. So…I guess that’s happening.
Final Verdict: 9, Recommended. I continued to enjoy what Golf was doing with this cast and characters. I loved how imperfect everyone felt here, but the desire to be more together lands clearly for me. Khaotung and First continue to be two of my favorite GMMTV actors, and I like how well they work together. I’m going to miss seeing Neo and Louis together, but I hope they keep up the good work this year. If you enjoyed The Eclipse, I think you’ll be satisfied by this special.

HI I REALLY REALLY REALLY wanna talk about how Astro Boy is a great example of the 'came back wrong' trope especially because He Came Back Exactly Like He Already Was- and also it's Such a fucking trans allegory.
Tumblr media
In every iteration the basic story is that Dr. Tenma, a super important figure in the field of robots, has a son, Toby, who dies due to some form of technology. So, he brings Toby back in the form of a robot replacement, 'Astro Boy', only to eventually decide he's done with him, because he 'isn't his son anymore'.
In the 60s series he gets frustrated that Astro isn't growing like a normal child and dumps his ass off to go get traumatized in a robot dog fighting ring. In the 2000s series he's the main antagonist even!
But my favorite iteration is the 2009 movie, especially because it hit really close to home as a trans person. which is a. WILD fucking thing to say i'm aware but just like. hear me out.
So Toby is killed in an accident and his father is devastated, so he brings him back by creating a robot body that looks exactly like him and importing all of his memories into it. He has no memory of ever dying, however. To him, it's like no time has passed and suddenly everyone is acting super tense around him. His dad, who was previously very distant. even wants to be around him full time now. So whatever, back to normal kid stuff I guess.
Except his dad seems to have the wrong idea of who he was. He has memories regarding Toby's childhood that Toby himself, who, mind you, has exact copies of his old memories, doesn't remember ever happening. His dad, who barely knew him and is fresh out of working nonstop for months to bring his son back, remembers him as a perfect, polite, gifted kid- and now that Toby's back to acting like himself, only now his child-like impulses and interests are no longer repressed, his father assumes that he's done something wrong.
When Toby finds out he's a robot by chance, he's excited to share this with his dad, but he's met with his dad telling him that he's a robot, a copy of his son that acts nothing like him, that every time he sees his face he's reminded of his dead child, that he wants nothing to do with him anymore, and that he doesn't love him.
This leads to him running away to live a life as a kid amongst others his age, choosing a new name (Astro) and being accepted for who he is and congratulated for the things he can do. For once in his life he's made actual connections. Once his new caretaker becomes hostile due to his identity as a robot however, he is captured and taken home so his father can have him decommissioned. And right before he dies, all he can think to do is apologize that he couldn't have been a better son.
anyways tl;dr his dad changes his mind, brings him back to life, his new friends support him, he beats the bad guy w/e w/e, what really stuck with me was his dad catching back up and telling him, "You may not be Toby, but you're my son." before the climax. THAT really got me
Because ultimately, it's a story about repressing parts of yourself, about those who are close to you knowing someone who isn't really you at all, about facing rejection upon learning who you are and sharing it with those close to you, about starting a new life with a new name and people who love you for you, and about eventually being accepted by those who found you important enough to them that they decide to get to know you like they never did before.
TL;DR, shoutout to Astro Boy, the trans kid ever.

@buffetpallascat doing a good ol' days reply because i had enough thoughts on this to warrant some meta, in my typical rambling fashion. hope you don't regret engaging by the time im done dfhkdsf
for starters, you're very welcome, i'm glad you enjoy the post :D
as for your question - i meant moreso that it was typical of the fandom, although it was also very much influenced by societal trends of the time, too. fandom's always had a rocky history with women, especially women who supposedly 'get in the way of "slash" couples', but the way fandom misogyny is performed has changed; i see more willful erasure of female characters these days than flat out blatant misogyny. in tw fan content from the 00s, i've seen gwen hatefully AND casually called some pretty horrible things that i rarely see fictional or real women called nowadays, simply because standards have changed. hell, one of the comms i linked, the twgenre finders one, there was several entries requesting fic where gwen experiences, like, bodily harm? not in a whump-y way, they actually wanted to recreationally read fic about her getting physically injured and suffering, out of some bizarre sense of malice towards her. simply because she 'gets in the way of janto'. and i can't even fathom that existing nowadays. pretty much everyone outside of weird little 12 year olds knows that's not acceptable. not to mention it's just weird.
interestingly i've also noticed a lottttt of change in how the fandom... reacted to and treated janto as a couple back in the day, versus now. people in 2006 were not normal about gay people. we know fandom's history with fetishizing gay men, and it was even worse in 2006 with an exceptionally rare canon gay couple being received by a jarringly hetero-but-'slash'-obsessed fanbase.
i mean, i don't wanna generalize. i saw a poll recently about how fandom is not mainly composed of straight women, contrary to popular belief, at least anymore, and i guess the question is, was it ever? i have seen a lot of the people involved in fandom in the 00s identify themselves as straight, but was that partially because of the culture of that era? have any of those people since come out as some type of queer? maybe, for some of them, that was them exploring their queerness in a safe environment, when the culture around being gay in real life was a lot different.... the same way modern fandom culture continues to be for those of us who aren't in accepting homes. if they were 20smth year olds in the 2010s/2020s, rather than the 2000s, would they still identify as straight?
not sure. but i've made a habit of going on the profiles of old lj accounts, and i'll sometimes wind up going through the journals and the personal posts of authors i respect, etc etc. a significant amount of mid 00s fic writers were straight women in their 30s - 40s, many married, some with kids. very different demographic to modern fandom. very different climate they lived in vs the one we're in.
(although, bonus note, i also once found a thread of bisexuals in 2006 praising torchwood's depiction of bisexuality, and that made me exceptionally happy. but also maybe a little sad, because torchwood's my personal fav bi rep, too, in 2023, and the fact that we've had nothing better in seventeen years is a bit of a bummer. but i digress.)
anyway, this is all to say, i've seen some insanely fetishy shit about jack and ianto that rubbed me exceptionally wrong. that gross dehumanizing, severely homophobic place where it's like... ahh, ok, so you don't see them as people, you see them as sexy dolls you can mash together. but, ofc, that's how i view it as a bisexual person in 2023 who's been on tumblr far too long. they didn't see any problem with it. they might've even seen it as progressive. how can you be homophobic when you're obsessed with the little gay people on ur screen? but it's the opposite end of the 'homophobes reducing gay ppl down to what they do in their beds' trope, and it comes across as dated and icky now.
i mean, i consume a lot of older media, i know how to turn off my 21st century sensibilities and remind myself things used to be different, but it's honestly an impressive difference. there's some fantastic fics from that era of the fandom, in fact most of my favorite fics are from that era, but i often get quite a bit of culture shock reading things. particularly, i'm always impressed by people in the 2000s, an extremely biphobic era, applying their impressive period-typical 'bisexuals aren't real' beliefs to The Bisexual Show. torchwood's rep's not perfect (again, a product of its era), but i've seen a fantastic amount of gay!ianto and straight!owen, because bisexual men don't exist, obviously, and jack's not bisexual, he's the amazing slutty space man, except he's mostly gay because all that matters is janto. and i don't even really see explorations of gwen or tosh's bisexuality at all, because, again, women who?
i found a comm a while back, i didn't include it on my list because it wasn't torchwood-exclusive and didn't have much content in the tw tag, but it was a lgbtfest, and contained fics about the team and their relationships with their bisexuality, and it was really intriguing to me to see queerness as understood by regular people in 2007/2008, y'know, not by gay writers or activists or films. i have no way of knowing if any of them were speaking from any personal place, but it was just interesting, because none of the fics i read in that comm had that same brand of tone-deaf sex-focused homophobia to them, they were progressive for the time, but it was still apparent to me that they were written by people with a mid to late 00s understanding of being gay, and i do think it's interesting, that substantial difference.
got a bit off topic, but now that i mentioned the initial fandom being overwhelmingly composed of women, i can also add that i think internalized misogyny factored hugely into the fandom's disdain for gwen. the 'strong female' trope doesn't just annoy straight men, it also annoys a lot of women (though not consciously) - not because they're opposed to well-written women, but because society tells us certain things that'd be admirable and complex and sympathetic out of a male hero are unacceptable out of a female one. it's the double standard. jack does some awful shit, but i rarely see him criticized. i've straight up seen fans go "jack's kind of a bastard, but it's ok because he's hot", which is fine in jest, i've joked about shit like that with characters, but it's not so cute when those same people turn around and condemn gwen for her actions. hell, or owen. i've literally seen someone say they'd like owen more if he was more conventionally attractive. like, ok, you're clearly just here for the janto eye candy. you haven't brought any substantial critical thinking skills. pls take ur shallow ass and leave. but back to gwen - she was held to a standard none of the other characters are held to. they picked on her for the stupidest shit. and her worse sin, the infidelity, it's bad, sure, but i've seen countless male characters who cheat on their partners who are beloved by their fandoms. it's just fucking gross. i fucking hate hypocrites.
dude, yknow what?? i've even seen fucking tosh bashing. WHO THE FUCK HATES TOSH????
ok im done. sorry for my babbling. but yeah, i think it's a fascinating thing. i love how humans change and develop with the times and how we can map the changes and how they affect media, and it's fun to observe in fandom because it's there, too, but no one's looking so i get to feel like a little scientist fdskjfds. ok i will cease with the excessive babbling now

Fanfic Friday!
I still don't completely understand it, so this week I'm just gonna reflect on things that happened while writing this arranged marriage longfic, some of which I posted about on here and some of which I didn't.
I gave up on the Soup Paragraphs that were haunting me and realized I can introduce them later if I must.
I got in some "let go and let god" practice when I realized I don't have to get every little throwaway detail right, especially when it slows down my progress/makes writing miserable.
My therapist wants me to see about applying this Free Yourself skill in my non-writing life, to which I say I know you are but what am I
Characters put themselves in situations without my input and it was great!
Ceremonies are hard to write but at least I now know what Ed and Stede would be like if they were kids in a school play.
I started watching Rome again after thinking about it last week in the wake of the cancelation (I've had it on DVD for years). Still problematic in the way something made in 2005 will be, but otherwise it holds up incredibly well.
I've also stopped caring as much about all the people using the world's problems as a bludgeon against OFMD fans and the campaign to to save the show. For all the reasons other people have already articulated well but also, on a personal note, because of what this show has done for my relationship with writing.
I won't get into too much detail but suffice it to say I have a lot of baggage around writing, because of all the "gifted" nonsense of my childhood and my MFA experience as an adult. I don't blame anyone per se, but unhelpful social frameworks were unhelpful. Let's just say that when Pop-Pop said "if you were ever good at anything go do that" to Ed, it didn't not remind me of feeling obligated to do something that used to be rewarding but isn't anymore because it's what you're "supposed" to do. Anyway.
I wrote three short (<2000 word) fics between seasons 1&2, the first fic I've felt like writing in over a decade. It was liberating as hell to write again in a low-stakes environment, and with blorbo motivation to power me through the difficult parts. I never, ever thought I would write anything longer than 2000 words, but for the past (several?) weeks now I've been alternating between two drafts in tropes I can't get enough of, the shortest of which is around 10,000 (admittedly unedited) words.
The other is longer, and every time I work on it I keep having to break shit up so the chapters stay under 5000 words. This is unprecedented for me, and I've wanted to share it so much that I'm running out of shit to post on WIP Wednesday that won't reveal the plot or require too much context. I've never been in a fandom as creative (and creatively inspiring) as this one, nor have I every written so much in a single fandom before.
My relationship with writing wouldn't be healing like this at all if it weren't for this show and this fandom, and in particular I want to highlight the freedom in embracing the "David Jenkins School of Historical Inaccuracy." In fact, I've been keeping a running list of AO3 tags for the fic I've made the most progress on, and there are several "David Jenkins School of ________" tags, including Archaeology, Theology, and Comparative Politics. Thanks to seeing DJ's philosophy at work it's now possible for me to move on from certain details when I get stuck because they're "inaccurate" for the setting or whatever in a way I never could before. Now I feel empowered to move on from tricky details by asking myself:
Is it funny?
Is it related to the plot?
Is it character-building?
And if the answer to all of those is no, then so is the answer to question 4: "does it matter?"
Assuming I finish these longfics they'll be the longest creative pieces I've ever written and beyond the longest works of fiction I ever thought I would write, and for that I'm eternally grateful. Even if the world we live in is a crumbling disaster. Especially if the world we live in is a crumbling disaster.

20 questions for fic writers
Tagged by the lovely @rcmclachlan!
1. How many works do you have on Ao3?
37 + 2 Orphaned Works on main (and two fics that have been removed from AO3 but reposted on Tumblr) 3 under a sock account 1 on a shared account
2. What's your total Ao3 word count?
256,810
3. What fandoms do you write for?
All current WIPs are either Hockey RPF or Supernatural
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
five theories about victor "my husband" nikiforov (+ one fact) [YOI]
Family Dinner [The Old Guard]
Lonely Hearts Club [YOI]
the warmest part of winter [YOI]
Modern Marvels [Rick and Morty]
5. Do you respond to comments?
I try to, but get overwhelmed pretty quickly. I'm trying to be better about this!
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
the blue house [Hockey RPF, SidGeno]. I would consider it an ambiguously optimistic ending instead of unhappy, but it definitely was written for an angst fest!
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
the warmest part of winter, which is at risk of being too cutesy.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I've never seen anything specific on AO3, but I know some people got pretty annoyed with some tropes I helped popularize in Yuri On Ice fandom (Victor Nikoforov Has a Foot Fetish, Yuuri Katsuki is a Huge Slut)
9. Do you write smut?
I sure do!
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you have written?
Sort of. Some people have considered Not Just Nothing [SPN] a crossover instead of an AU. It's a Ken Doll AU.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I've seen
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes, and it is honestly the biggest compliment in the world
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I don't know if I should be revealing this, but I was definitely one of the people who wrote Popular Slut Club under the SturgeonGuy29 name 🤫
14. What's your all time favorite ship?
What an impossible question! Probably SidNate, considering they've been making me see shrimp colors for 6 years now.
15. What is a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Oh god, I don't want to jinx anything here. I really do intend to finish everything I start writing. I have a doc called Starz 4Ever, where Geno becomes a porn star out of spite.
16. What are your writing strengths?
When my dialogue is good, it's really good. I think very highly of my characterization.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Finishing shit!
18. Thoughts of writing dialogue in another language in fics?
I used to do this, and I meaningfully don't anymore unless it's crucial for the plot. I was actually embarrassed going back to a Yuri on Ice fic to see I had written some Victor dialogue in Cyrillic.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
I want to say I was writing Seiya/Usagi for Sailor Moon in like, 1999 or 2000, but I couldn't tell you what it was about or where to find it.
20. Favorite fic you have written?
I'm really fond of Say When. Sid/Nate/Andy feels so personal to me at this point. It has my favorite sex scene I've ever written, and I'm eager to post more for the universe.
I also am still proud of we should be stars and perfect tens (Rick and Morty, heed the tags), which is a little rougher with age but I think the execution of two parallel narratives both written in second perspective is well done, and the blue house considering the subject matter.
Tagging: anyone who wants to do it!

Okay so this is going to be my overall thoughts on Clone High season 2!
A lot of people have and will continue to complain about how it’s not as good or as funny as season one and that’s both fair and unfair. As a fanfic writer I know how hard it can be to continue writing a story after not working on it for a long time especially after working on new projects. And the same can be said for the show runners here, a lot has changed since they first produced season one. This was something that if it wasn’t for COVID it might have never been revived, so I can forgive them for it not feeling exactly the same as before after all it was twenty years ago. Jokes that worked then wouldn’t work now, I get and respect that. With that being said it could have been better.
For one besides Abe in the first episode no one seems to struggle with adjusting to 2023! That kinda of doesn’t make sense, I get not wanting to bring it up all the time but side jokes and cutaways could have worked. I also found it weird that we barely see any foster parents this season, you’re telling me that the Clones from 2003 parents weren’t freaking out when they suddenly came home after being gone for twenty years! I mean it’s not like the foster parents were important to the story but they could have shown some kind of reaction to them just showing up again?!
Like wouldn’t it have been funny if the foster parents were like super protective of their kids when they came back to the point of putting tracking devices on their phones or something?! I don’t know maybe not that but something! Also is John Stamos alive or dead after what happened? It’s also never addressed!
I do like the inclusion of all the new characters though, they do really add some new elements to the show and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. But again I expected this going into this season. Another thing that has changed is that besides Harriet no one seems to be trying to live up to or are pressured by expectations of their Clone parents. This was a running theme in season one for all the characters and yet this theme is just given to one person now? Sometimes the other clones might mention something but it’s very rare.
Now to get into the relationship that took up most of the season Joanfk, as a huge fan of the ship I was both excited and dreading to see how this relationship would develop. And that’s mostly because of the new intro, I personally don’t think the creators were ever going to make them a couple in 2003, they clearly seem to favor Abe/Joan which makes sense because during that time period the Friends to Lovers trope ruled most shows. I feel like Joanfk was done because they knew that a lot of the new fans wanted to see it, after all Joanfk shippers are one of the main reasons this show was not only revived but people kept talking about it until season two came out. I’m not gonna say that it’s not possible that they could get back together because Clone High is satire a parody of all the teen drama shows and movies it’s very possible that they could get back together again at some point. And honestly I hate the reason they gave for breaking them up being that JFK wasn’t smart enough both intellectually and emotionally for Joan to stay with him when throughout this season alone we can see that this isn’t even really true. I appreciate that they did this and even gave them a semi respectable breakup but (and I could be wrong) BUT clearly they’re not that into Joanfk. And yet still the biggest obstacle to Joanfk starts and ends with Joan not being sure how she feels about Abe (or even JFK sometimes) and not doing anything to resolve it.
Abe and Joan if the show had continued it’s run in 2003 this couple would have probably been end game, it’s the classic Friends to Lovers trope that the 90’s and early 2000’s loved. After all the show Friends basically coasted on this one trope as well as Saved by the Bell etc…Personally I think the Friends to Lovers trope can work if it’s done well Kim Possible is an example that I can think of that does this well and though some might not like Kim and Ron being endgame I think its actually done well and believable. And then there’s the times when I don’t think it’s done well (again this is just my opinion!) like with Danny Phantom. Don’t get me wrong Danny and Sam started off as cute and I did root for them…in season one after that the writers basically just dragged this trope out till the very end. And it didn’t help that (in my opinion) Valerie and Danny’s relationship was a lot more interesting. I mentioned this because Abe and Joan’s possible relationship seems to be something the writers want to drag out and this is bad because you could very easily lose your audience because of that. I get that dragging it out is part of the humor and satire but in a time where a lot of shows can easily be canceled (especially with the writers strike still going on) it’s not the best way to go. I will never like Abe and Joan being together as much as Joanfk (I really do think it’s the better relationship between the two of them despite what was said in episode seven) but I can at least get used to it and be happy for them if it’s not dragged out. Or they can make the three of them polyamorous I’m fine with that too!
The other couples are fine for the most part Confucius and Harriet will have their issues I can already see it but I am willing to give it a chance. Again the last episode (spoilers if you haven’t seen it) it makes sense that Harriet acted the way she did because again of all of the clones right now she seems to be the only one who feels any pressure about living up to her clone mother. And Confucius well he has rich foster parents even if he doesn’t qualify to get into a college he’ll be admitted it makes sense that he’s not worried about it or thinking about it.
Frida and Cleo are perfect, I only wish there had been more hints of them throughout the season but in like two episodes the pace and execution of this relationship was done perfectly and believable. It’s one of the few couples that’s just cute and has nothing else messing with it. Was it fair that Frida let go of Joan to save Cleo, not really but it made sense that she would save her girlfriend, over her girl friend.
Okay now to talk about the characters one on one.
JFK continues to improve and grow despite this being a satire teen drama show, he makes male friends, is in a committed relationship with one person where he Doesn’t cheat or even thinks about anyone else all the time. (Only one episode sorta counts) It’s hard but he accepts Joan’s decision to break things off with him even though he really does love her to the point of wanting what is best for her even if it’s not him. He even becomes friends with Abe and encourages him to pursue someone he still very clearly loves. I wouldn’t be surprised if we find out he was faking it in episode seven just to give Joan an excuse to leave because he was afraid he wasn’t enough to make her happy.
Cleo didn’t get enough screen time for someone who is a main character, and besides her relationship with Frida and squashing her beef with Joan. And the fact that most of the beef was between them fighting over Abe is strangely never brought up. She’s not given much to do throughout this season besides being Homecoming Queen. An episode where she has to navigate the world of social media like Instagram would have been interesting to see. Maybe in season three?
Frida is one of the new main characters and I think she fits well with the show so far. Again love her relationship with Cleo, but besides that I think she’ll be like voice of reason character going forward. Not much to say besides that because well this is her first season on the show!
Harriet another new main character and again seems to be the one dealing with the pressures of being a clone the most. Wanting to be great because her Clone mother was Harriet Tubman makes a lot of sense and I think it touches on a lot of people’s fears of not doing anything important with their lives. I looked forward to seeing how she grows.
Confucius another new main character who is just trying to gain the attention of his foster parents. It’s very clear that attention is what he wants out of anything. You can see it whenever they show him on FlipFlop, and again the fact that he’s not worried about college makes sense whether he doesn’t want to go or knows that his parents will pay for him eventually. I look forward to seeing how he develops.
Topher the last new main character, there is a lot that someone can say about him, I’m pretty sure he’s now the favorite character whether it’s because you love or hate him. Honestly I like that they have a character that’s awful, do I think he’s closeted…maybe but I do believe that one of the reasons he was “white leveraging” Abe is to keep Abe’s attention to himself. I don’t think he had any friends before Abe was thawed out and he probably wouldn’t be able to hang around the group if it wasn’t for him. So it makes sense that he would “white leverage” him from telling Joan how he felt because then Topher would no longer have an audience because Abe would likely spend all his time with Joan.
Abe learns a bit throughout the season but I don’t think he grows much until nearly the end. He spends most of season pinning over Joan and…that’s it he doesn’t become friends with JFK until the last episode and as far a we know the reason why he even realized that he loved Joan was because Cleo had made her look hot in season one. It’s never addressed why he suddenly loves her, and yeah that’s it. Sure he’s “punished for his behavior” in the first episode and it almost makes it seem that Joan and Abe won’t be friends this season but that is quickly forgotten by the end of the episode. Again I do think the Joan/Abe relationship will happen or at least be addressed between them but it’s likely that it will be dragged for a while. I will admit that the moments where they’re together just being friends is nice though.
Joan changes the most throughout this season whether you liked the changes or not. It starts with her dating JFK which while I enjoyed seeing, it was never addressed on why she accepted his offer in the first place. Sure they slept together at prom but there wasn’t enough done to explain within the show why she agreed to date him. (Honestly it’s like the show runners were like, the Joanfk fanfic writers did that for us we don’t have to explain ourselves!) Then she becomes friends with Frida and Harriet which I thought was nicely done, then she and Cleo come to an understanding! But her feelings for Abe linger throughout the season and something that I noticed after episode ten is that Joan is codependent, if she believes that she doesn’t have a boyfriend or friends to support her then she turns into a monster. Season three will either address what she did in the first episode or throughout the season either way she’ll be punished for it. Even if she did realize at the last minute that what she was doing was wrong.
The rest of the cast was fine Mr. B’s backstory was compelling, I don’t know why the writers felt that Scudworth needed a love interest but…it happened? Candide is interesting enough we’ll see how it goes. Sorry not saying more but this is pretty long already.

heeeheeehooohoooo, i was tagged to do this AU GAME by @creepkinginc @metalheadmickey & @energievie -- who all had brilliant ideas for stories! HOW FUN!
- - - - -
rules (more or less):
use this au generator to assign you an au, this fan fiction trope generator to give you a trope/situation/sometimes another au, feel free to keep clicking until you get something that inspires you. then try to come up with the title, plot, vibe, and details of a fic including whatever the generators gave you. you don’t actually have to write it, just put the concept into the world! this is basically just a thought experiment.
- - - - -
au generator gave me: 2000s AU
- - - - -
fic trope generator gave me: have one of your characters get home way too late and the other character has been pacing and worrying all night.
- - - - -
title: Y2K Mayday

let's plot:
[[ as much as i would like for this to be a multi-chap, this is a one-shot, let's be real. i also basically wrote it lol so i'm throwing it under a cut! ]] the year is 1999. mickey & ian are roommates.
they both moved out of their family homes for same, same, but different reasons. mickey just finished a prison stint & wanted to stay as far the fuck away from terry as humanly possible. ian's getting back on his feet after his latest episode & is ready to try his hand at recovery when there aren't a million gallaghers checking in every couple of minutes. ian picked a two-bedroom apartment in a neighborhood that's still technically the southside, but it inching towards something nicer. he thinks that mandy's going to move in with him, but then she gets some job opportunity/sugar daddy a few states over, so at the last minute, she sends mickey to move into the room she was supposed to take. they keep their distance at first. just two guys, going about their days, figuring their shit out, sharing a roof. they don't need to be friends, they just need to not kill each other when one of them forgets to swap out the toilet paper roll. but then, little things start happening. an impromptu movie night over a shared batch of mickey's precious pizza rolls... ian picks up mickey's favorite beer on his grocery run, putting it front & center in the fridge so he won't miss it... they both start picking up around the place, trying to get the other one to notice how many unprompted chores they both have done... ian starts to wonder... he obviously thinks mickey's hot. he has eyes & a dick that takes an interest whenever mickey's bending over to snag something out of the oven. & yeah, he's heard things from mandy that would lead him to believe he's not barking up the wrong tree. but mickey's not out out & ian's not going to just bring it up in casual conversation unless he's also prepared to get his face bashed in. cut to: New Year's Eve. ian's at the gallagher house for a party. he doesn't know what mickey's plans are. he tried to ask him about it, but mickey kept dodging the question. maybe he's working? surely the club that he's a bouncer at is having some big event. but why wouldn't he just say that? ...maybe he had a date that he didn't want to tell ian about? fuck, that boils his blood. it makes his skin crawl, thinking about mickey kissing someone else on new year's eve. starting a new fucking millennium doing anything other than bouncing on ian's cock... it's almost 2am, a fine time to still be out on new year's, but suddenly ian can't imagine being anywhere else but with mickey. he's gotta get home! NOW! his legs shake the whole L ride. what if he gets home & mickey has someone over? what if he's not even there & ian just has to nurse his broken heart alone in an empty apartment? what if mickey is there. but he laughs in ian's face at the very mention of them being together as more than roommates & occasional movie buds? somehow, he manages to get to their apartment. he opens the door to find mickey biting his thumb nail & pacing around the living room. "mick?" "what the fuck, gallagher?! do you have any idea what time it is? where've you been?" "fiona threw a party. what's going on?" "shit..." he swipes a nervous hand down his face. chuckles a litte. "i'm a fucking idiot. you didn't come home. thought something happened to you..." "it's new year's eve." "yeah man, i know. guys at the club were talking about fucking Y2K... i dunno, got all in my head." "aw mickey, you were worried about me!" "was not." "you just admitted it! plus, you're burning a hole in the carpet." "whatever." as ian approaches, he notices the blush on mickey's cheeks. he wants to see that flush cover a whole lot more than just his pretty face. & something tells him that he might just get his wish... "sorry i missed midnight." THEY SMOOOOOCH! THE END!

Gus Porter Appreciation Post
Tumblr media
I have been wanting to do gull analysis of the important characters in The Owl house since like 2/3rds of the way through season 2. Now that the first season 3 special is right around the corner It feels like a good time to make posts and get views again.
Gus is a character I find particularly interesting. In season 1 and for part of season 2 Gus is there, but he is secondary comic relief, very token, and almost never seems to move or affect the plot. He slowly grows as a character with and develops arc’s though, and whats interesting to me is that unlike with characters like Luz/Eda/Willow I cannot really say when his character hit the turning point. I mean I know when his character had shifts, or started to focus more visibly on certain aspects of his character, a lot of the big moments his character goes through and core aspects that come to spotlight in episodes like “Through The Looking Glass” and “Labyrinth Runners” on re-watch actually start more subtle in the back ground of season 1 episodes.
Warning very long post underneath
Things with Gus that could have been done better
Okay first lets address some of the weakness’s of Gus’s character. I want to get those out of the way so that I can spend more time speaking his praises. Up top I call him 3 things “Secondary comic relief” “token” and “unimportant plot wise”. I stand by all three being true (at least for a lot of the series) and all three can be problems with his character. For the “secondary comic relief” one... King is out main source of comic relief. King is voiced by Alex Hirsch, who many fan’s recognize as the creator and voice actor for many Gravity Falls characters. He is a very funny man. King himself is also a funny character, because he sees himself as big and ferocious, has a large personality, and all of this is wrapped up into a like 2.5 ft tall fluffy little dog body. Gus’s first ever job in the show was to come assist Luz on adventures and mishaps where she would be away from Eda and King. Unlike King though Gus does not have a large personality, and with his a main trait being “Self-proclaimed “Human Expert”, when actually everything he says is wrong” he just never seemed as funny. Also King despite being mostly comic relief had lore and backstory from the beginning, taught Luz about demons and life with Eda, and was able to come up with clever ways to help defeat foe’s. Gus... shares his food, and can do basic distracting.
I called him “token”. that is a word that I know gets thrown around a lot, and there is some argument as to when it is appropriate and what it means. So let me give the definition I learned for “token”: One or a few characters that are different from the main cast in a noticeable way, and are added in mainly to give the illusion of this show/book/game being inclusive.” You know how in 90′s and early 2000′s shows about super hero’s/crime fighting a team will have that one (or maybe two if its a big team) female character because otherwise the show writers can be accused being sexist “don’t you think girls can be hero’s too”? Plus without her they will have more trouble doing cliche romance tropes. Or how about in Christmas specials you always have at least one who is briefly stated or shown to be Jewish, because of course the show runners know that Christianity isn’t the only religion, and Christmas is not the only holiday. Gus would qualify as a token character for two reasons. One is that he is one of the only few boys at Hexside who is learning magic, and is also important enough to have a name. The score for that I believe is Girls 11, Boys 5. Of those 5 Jerbo and Barkus were intended to be one off characters and while we saw them again they got no focus and virtually no development (Barkus is in a hexsis holdum club, Jerbo flew for that jerk professors flyer derby team that one time). Edric only shows up spuraticaly and rarely is shown at school. Mattholomule also rarely shows up, and when he does it is to be a parallel foil to Gus (more on him and that later). So Gus is our only frequently occurring boy to actively bee seen trying to become a witch.
Secondly he can count as a token Black character. The Owl house has prioritized  including 3D characters of different sexuality, and learning types. Its disability representation has also gained positive notice and appreciation by its audiance as well. But is does have some problems and struggles in race. I will start by saying that I am white, and as such I do not notice as many things as a POC would when it comes to racial inclusion, and my word should always come second to a POC’s when talking about this. But even I can notice that Amity’s character seemed completely thought out and written with fluid direction when Dana and the crew were still throwing Mabel, Webby, Star, Anne, every other off-beat, family carton, female protagonist of the last 10 years, and multiple popular teen cliche’s all against the wall to see what stuck as character for Luz. Even I can note the racism on giving Luz a new White Mom when she already had a Latina Mom. Then treating White Mom as her main/better/more fun mom, because Latino Mom tells tries to change Luz (get her to tone down her more destructive behavior while at school) but White Mom lets Luz do whatever she wants, up to and including praising her for crime. And even I can notice how Gus got way way less screen time and focus than characters who had lighter skin than him. Now here I want the opinion of POC fans: in season 2 Dana and the crew added 3 more POC characters (Raine, Darwin, and Darius), brought back 2 existing characters (Katya and Mattholomule) and, admittedly more towards the end of the season 2, gave Gus and Skara more focus. Did this feel to you like Dana and the Crew noticing and correcting an issue, or did it feel more like the damage control?
Gus’s plot relevance in episodes is kinda self explanatory. In 1B he does not even participate in shenanigans and mishaps that Luz,Willow, and Amity do. He is the group cheerleader. Which would be fine if they let him do all the cool tricks, acrobatics, and full on routines cheerleaders do. Combining his illusion powers with all of that would have been really awesome. But instead of doing any of that they just gave him two small flags that he waved back in fourth from the stands. That was his whole cheer routine, and most of his 1B character... Okay now I am finally done with writing out the flaws/problems with his character, remember I do love this character, and can move on with praises.
Gus’s magic abilities
Gus’s learning trope is that he the “stressed out gifted kid”. He is a protege magician when it comes to Illusion magic, and have even skipped 2 grades. Okay We do not know that much about how different grades work at Hexisde (it’s an all grade school) since Luz our main character see’s the school for the first time at 14. Given that Luz enrolls during a Summer semester I am guessing that Hexisde is a year round school (how do grade levels work at those? I do not know) that does like 4 three week breaks during each season. But I am going to guess that Elementary level kids learn about the different coven tracks and opportunity’s in them, middle school kids pick their track and learn the basics/early lessons, then High school kids perfect their magic and take more advanced lessons. We have never heard Lilith or Raine or any of the Blights mention Colleges, so maybe its not a thing on the isles and kids only leave when coven recruiters come and take them away...
Gus again skipped two grades and “Labyrinth Runners” implies he does it pretty young, he looks like 9 or 10 in his flashback of his first week in advanced classes. If Willow’s powers came late, could Gus have developed Illusion powers early? We also see that he wasn’t then and still is not now in complete control of his powers. My guess is that when Perry and Bump saw what Gus was capable of they moved him up those grades because they believed the best thing for Gus was to get help from an experienced illusion professor who could help him learn more control and mastery of his powers. We can see how great the Illusion professor is in “Labyrinth Runners”, and how much she cares about Gus.
In season 1 Gus mostly sticks to what seems like advanced basics. He could sentences in the air, and make copies of himself, and he was amazing at it. He was not doing one letter at a time, or even one word at a time, he could magic whole sentences into the air at once with great theatrics. His can make multiple copies at once. His copies still remain fully functional when he is away from them, and they can all talk. For clones made by a child, they are very advanced copies. In “Looking Glass Ruins“ Gus makes an illusion large enough to cover a small grave yard, and then In “Labyrinth Runners” his school. In that episode he also pockets a powerful magnifier glass that lets him peer into foes heads and call fourth bad memories. This gives Gus a way to cause actual damage to Belos in “King’s Tide”.... But Gus may have been hit some recoil on that.
This brings me to another part of Gus’s character that I love: He gets progressively stronger through out the show, but he never reaches the ceiling of his potential. He can give his copies more advanced mobility and speaking skills, But when he does they are less likely to do what he wants. See the that only pretended to take notes for him when he skipped, and the one that he made when he wanted to interview himself who promptly told him “I would rather die than reveal my secrets”. He is not able to make large illusions in season 1, and in season 2 they tire him and he still loses control if they go over a certain size. He learns to use the magnifier glass quickly, but he can only us it on an already subdued opponent and using it may pose danger to him in the process. Gus has all the potential to become a mater illusionist, and the dreams and ambition to become even more. But all of this will be one day in the future. For now he is a kid who needs to keep studying and practicing so he can get better, smarter, and wiser.  This brings me to my next point about Gus
Relatable Fears
First off let’s look at the pressure Gus puts on himself. He loves to brag about getting to skip two grades. He can be a show off with his magic, and when mentioning that his dad wants him to become a master illusionist he laughs says “That’s easy”, and declares that he will become this powerful and new figure in relational politics and end a long standing feud between the boiling Isle residents and the Giraffe’s.
When tries to help Willow deal with a pixie infestation with an illusion and it doesn’t help at all, and she gets hurt anyway, He goes through a huge existential crisis and starts wondering openly questioning if the illusion track is even worth studying. Some bullies trick him into helping them clear a way to the graveyard for them, before revealing they do not want to be his friends and do not care about his feeling’s or opinions. Gus blames himself for all of this. Who was he kidding thinking Bria actually cared? Well it’s not his fault. HE thought Bria cared because she did a really good job of putting on a show of acting like she cared. Its pretty high key hinted that he does this all the time at Glandis and that’s how she keeps her three “friends” and probably others under her thumb. Heck its low key hinted that she got Mattholomule in so much trouble that his parents took him out of Glandis at least in part to get him away from her and the members of their group. Gus isn’t stupid, Bria is just a skilled manipulator.
After Bria Gus and the cast, unfortunately meet, Adrian Graye Venworth. Gus see’s through his first illusion and saves Edric and the other kids from being tricked into getting sigiled. But Later Gray and a member of the Emperor’s Coven trick Gus into almost going with them by casting an illusion to make the Coven Scout look like Willow. Hunter See’s through the Illusion and grabs Gus yelling that it is a trick. Gus is devastated that he could not tell the difference between his best friend and an illusion and concludes that he must be stupid and have something seriously wrong with him. A few things that I will point out here (and I am so glad Hunter points out to Gus in the episode). Gus is not at fault at all. The coven guard pretending to be Willow fooling him? They showed up when Gus was in danger, scared, and desperate to find help so of course he feels a wave of relief at Willow. Hunter saw through it because he has rained himself to never drop his guard (he has had to) But Gus has no reason to distrust Willow. Even if he was fooled it was never a fair fight. Gus is a gifted kid, but he is still only a 12 year old kid, and is still learning. The Emperor’s coven is made up of all the most ambitious students and highest scores AFTER they graduated school, past tons of vigorous recruitment tests, and devoted their lives to nothing but improving their magic and serving the Emperor. Adrian is a Coven head, a.k.a the top ranking Illusionist on The Titian. Him and all he guards are older and have both more training and experience than Gus. They were able to fool Bump and the Hexside teachers too, and none of them are fools. Gus’s only problem is the pressure he puts on himself.
To go a bit deeper into Gus’s fears, we see him began to work through his fears in season 2 but I think his arc with fear and overcoming it actually starts in season 1′s ‘Enchanting Grom Fight”. Remember at the end of it when Willow and Gus are helping with the clean up and that peace of Grom morphs into their fears. We see that Willow is afraid of ladybugs (???) and that Gus is afraid of clowns. Now Clowns are a pretty common, it would be enough to assume Gus is scared of their big red grins, yellow teeth, or giant stomping feet. But in “Through the Looking Glass Ruins” through that Illusions are not able to help solve his friend’s issues like Gus hopped he loses faith in them and himself. Then h starts calling Illusions “party tricks” and himself a “clown”. Which descends to “Stupid”, “Fool”, and “Kidding himself” in “Labyrinth Runners”. You add all this together and it equals Gus not being scared of clowns because of creepy make-up, oversized cloths, or how in-your-face some clowns are. We only see the clown image Grom used on Gus from the back but I am gonna gus its front looked kinda similar to Gus himself. “Clown” is the bad name Gus calls himself when he gets angry/scared/or frustrated at his own mistakes. Gus is scared that maybe he is destined to be a clown. Maybe his dad, teachers, friends, and himself are all fooling themselves when they call him someone special, and maybe everything he is good at is just stupid, unimportant, party tricks.
THAT IS NOT TRUE. Gus’s is a great friend and his support has done a lot for Willow, Luz, King, Mattholomule, and Hunter. He has been a real light and the dark for them all. While his illusions have limits, he starts finding knew things he can do with them throughout the season as he improves (and we thankfully say god bye to the Gus the uninspiring cheerleader and the two tiny flags that all he does is flick back and forth). Gus’s own magic feets even hit Heroic status on at least three occasions “Through the Looking Glass Ruins”, “Labyrinth Runners”, and “Kings Tide” where if not for him things would have gone much worse and potentially innocent lives could have been ruined or lost. Gus can, is, and will be great witch. He just needs to take some time, and come into it in his own way.
Gus’s development into a more empathetic friend and his growth and maturity through out the show.
Just a small heads up most of this will be about Gus’s relationships with other males. I know, I know Willow and Luz are his best friends. I am not trying to undervalue his relationships with them, they are great friends and very important to him. The reason I am not talking much about them is that his friendships with them start from their first meeting and remain really consent throughout the show. There is never really any change. They are all friends, Willow and Luz know he is younger by a couple years but they do not treat him any different for it. Gus loves this and is super protective of both of them, trying to jump on or “Gus chomp” any big kid who calls one of the Trio “losers’ or tries to give them a hard time.
Let’s start with the first time we see Gus in his element. Gus’s time as the President of the Human Appreciation Society (a school based club he started). This was Gus at his absolute worst, most jerkish, and it got him nothing. Gus says in the episode that he created the club because being the youngest kid in his grade he was always overlooked and wanted to create a place where that would not happen to anyone. When he says that it is the only time that he is either kidding himself or just being stupid. Because Gus is a tyrannical leader that and overlooks every other person there. No really he is. Gus calls himself “The President” but also made himself a crown, like he’s the king. He has a huge list of rules that he made himself and that no one else is allowed even comment on. He is the only person allowed to touch the objects, He is the only one allowed to make decisions (he legit see’s the group wanting to vote as anarchy), and judging by his reaction to Matty dumping out his backpack Gus may even be the only one who is usually allowed to bring in artifacts. Gus made himself a place where he would get to be in charge of kids older than him and they would have to listen to what he says. Well later in the show we see that Bigger Kids used to take advantage of Gus’s trust and trick him into doing their work for him. These are his worst memories. So seeing that I can see why Gus would want a place like the H.A.S., but that is an explanation for his behavior and not a excuses. He is acting like his old bullies and it is getting him nowhere. The bigger kids in his club must stay because they are interested in learning more about human culture, because they do not seem to care for or like Gus. When Mattholomule challenges him for leadership two kids support him and one just proclaims himself “an undecided voter”; none of them back Gus. When Bump kicks Gus out of the club none of the kids care or ever speak to him again.
Losing the club was painful for Gus in the short term because it was a club he cared about (and it led to 1b Gus and his boring obsession with two tiny flags. They really could not have also given him a horn, some lights, or put the flags on a baton), but after the way he had acted I cannot say he did not deserve to lose it, and he did grow from this. His relationship with King is the first one to show his growth. In “Really Small problems” Luz gets the day off from school and decides to take King to the carnival. While there she runs into Willow and Gus and asks King if they can join them. Gus is really condescending to King here, but King agrees to let them join for Luz. Willow and Gus do not listen to what King wants to do, gradually take more of Luz’s attention, and eventually fully exclude King. This drives King so crazy that he buys a potion to make Gus and Willow temporarily disappear. Which of course he bought from a con artist, its actually a scam that gets everybody in trouble, and King has to apologize and explain his loneliness to the other kids. He tried to make peace with Gus and Willow by offering them both pieces of broken friendship necklaces which they both take. Gus thanks King saying that he has always wanted “A jagged piece of cheap metal”. Willow gets on to Gus, I guess believing he is still being condescending, but I do think Gus was checking himself. Two episodes later when everyone is getting excited about Grom Gus gets to be the announcer and he goes to King to ask if he would like to be his assistant. When King gets stage fright Gus finds him and helps him through it in a much more tactful and friendly way. Gus is 3-4 years older than King, so to King Gus is a big kid. When King confessed the way Willow and Gus made him feel, I think this was the first time Gus was able to see his former bullies in his own actions. He did not like it and he makes steps in later episodes to be more friendly to King and treat him like one of the group.
Now Let’s go to Mattholomule. Gus was a jerk to the other members of his club, but when Mattholomule does his whole “scared and lonely new kid who just wants friends act (which I know was not completely an act)” Gus believes it and really does seem genuine in wanting to be Mattholomule’s friend afterwards. When Mattholomule turn on them and sends Luz to the detention pit, Gus goes to save her, and Mattholomule gets literally dragged along in the crossfire. Gus could have left Mattholomule to rot down there. There is a few options as to maybe why. Maybe Gus feels responsible since he kinda started this whole mess. Maybe since Mattholomule has the most experience with dentition pits Gus and Luz thought they could need him in the escape. What ever reason Gus shows genuine kindness in recusing Mattholomule as well as Luz. That is not an act that Gus gets repaid back to him right away. As soon as they get out and Bump see’s what they did to the pit, he tries to blame Luz. Gus takes all the blame, part of which should got to Matty, but Matty only speaks up when he see’s that he still has the opportunity to steal Gus’s club. Just to be clear on Mattholomule as H.A.S.P: He is a jerk, he will be just as tyrannical as Gus was, and like Gus the club made him no friends, no more popular, and any power he thinks the title gives him is in his head. Gus has to leave and become better.
But in “Through the Looking Glass Ruins” we get more back story on Mattholomule. We meet his old crew (whom his brother does not seem to like him hanging out with anymore) and see that they are all better than him at magic and hear how his lack of polished skill led to other kids making Glandis very difficult for him. Mattholomule essentially dealt with the same issues as Gus but on the opposite end. Mattholomule tries his best to keep Gus away from the other kids, and Gus thinks this is just him being mean. Only to find out to late that these other kids are just using them both. Because Gus was once kind to Matholomule, something that try as he might Matty has apparently not been able to stop thinking about or being grateful for, Matty goes back to help him. After watching Gus defend the graveyard from his old crew Matty finally makes the right choice for the right reason (reasons other than power or dept) and offers to help fix it up. Then, at hearing the illusion history may have to be hidden away, Matty suggests that he and Gus can build it a stronger defense system. Gus has a new friend now (who may one day also become more than a friend, they do share interests and passions) and has renewed faith in both that illusion magic matters, and that people aren’t all bad, and are capable of changing for the better.
These lessons all come to play during Gus’s relationship with Hunter. Gus does not really like Hunter when they first meet. Hunter or “Caleb Jasper BloodWilliams” is a strange, rude mouthed, big kid, who Gus has not seen before, but getting Willow’s flyer derby team approved suddenly depends on him... It turns out “Caleb” is really Hunter, a.k.a the Golden Guard, and he is here to trick them into the roughest coven of them all. Yes Hunter regrets it and goes back to save them (actually he may have done it more for their palisman than them, but he still helped them). He did the right thing, only after lying to them, scamming them, and putting all of them in danger. Gus is not obligated to forgive Hunter or try and be his friend the next time meet. When they meet again Gus half expects Hunter to try and pull the same crap, until he learns that Hunter is on the run. Then he offers him help and a listening ear. Gus did this because he knows that Hunter is not 100% bad, feels empathy for how alone/confused/scared Hunter is, and he knows people can change for the better. Gus has come along way from the bratty, vindictive, kid he sometimes acted like in season 1a. To him these basic acts of kindness do not seem like much, but to Hunter, who is going through so much, they mean the world. It’s because of Gus’s influence that Hunter finds the courage to come out of hiding and publicly supports the rebel side. This indirectly helps lead to all 6 kids (I included King) being together on the day of Unity and able to help each other against Belos.
Gus Porter All and All
Gus is a really great, well thought out character. He is in the background more than some others, and I wish the show had brought him to the forefront more (I do believe that if the show had run longer we would have gotten more of him and Matty protecting the graveyard, Matty introducing him to his favorite book series, and Gus meeting Steve. Grrr). But even when Gus is stuck in the background he still has some really interesting arc’s going on and you miss out if you just dismiss him. I also appropriate Gus getting to do important things and be a hero from the background, he reminds me of Codename: Kids next Door’s numbah 5 in that respect. She mostly stayed out of the spotlight by choice, but was indisputably the backbone of her team. Gus’s journey through school and the insecurities that he deals with remind me a lot of myself when I was younger as well as friends I had back then. I am willing to bet a lot of kids in school can relate to Gus and I like how so much of his feelings and situation are shown to us instead of told. Its nice that kids can see him, and have him to help learn to not doubt or be so hard on them selves, You are special, the right people will see you as such. IF the voices in your head call you names, then tell them to shut up because they do not know.

31 days of horror 2023 (part 1/?)
Every year in October I challenge myself to watch 31 horror movies, 1 for each day, with varying success. If you're new here, I love horror and so the challenge is more about the commitment, than pushing myself to do something I wouldn't enjoy or do otherwise (thankfully).
So far, so good, I haven't watched anything that angered me or bored me to death. Those first 11 days were actually pretty great overall, and with only 2 rewatches.
Cherry Falls (2000): I thought a slasher starring Brittany Murphy would be an easy like but instead this was the only film in the bunch I did not care for. The attempted subversion of one of the genre's best known tropes (the Virgin Will Be Spared) was not done in a way that felt compelling; the script felt like there were too many cooks in the kitchen, like so many hands had touched it that the original intent had been lost; and aside from that one subversion it was just too bland, too unremarkable. And the transphobia didn't help. Brittany Murphy was stellar tho.
Possibly in Michigan (1983): Day 2 found me already scrambling for a short film as my day was ending, and lucky me otherwise I might have never watched this classic. "80s feminist cannibalism musical" feels like it's maybe doing it a disservice but it's what got me to watch it and I wouldn't know how to begin to talk about it in a more substantial way. If that tagline appeals to you in any way, it's on Youtube, go watch it.
The Exorcist (1973): I had seen that movie once as a teenager, when I was still very new to horror, and all I remembered from it were the scares. Watching it now, the scares are the least of the impressions the movie made on me. If I was a sadist with a cinema I'd program a triple feature on loneliness, alienation, and the loss of the body with this, Lake Mungo, and the original Cat People. (P.S.: I really recommend the following video essay.)
youtube
4. The Exorcist III (1990): First time watching and it scared the shit out of me. I loved it but I haven't been scared like that in a while. Again, there's nothing I could say about this that hasn't been said before. It had some of the worst (honorary) and best things I've ever seen. There is a carp swimming up and down in my brain.
5. Chucky S3E1: Yes episodes of TV count. Anyway, Chucky is back, it's my favourite horror franchise and the show has been, so far, one of the most fun I've had following a TV show ever. That season 3 premiere was a bit underwhelming for me, but certainly not bad. I'm looking forward to the rest.
6. Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010): Suffering depression from watching the two Exorcist movies back to back, I decided that rewatching a horror comedy I loved was in order. I used to worship Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, but now...it felt very "eh". I've been damaged by too many excellent films and some of the jokes from this classic just didn't do it as much for me anymore (aside from the "howdy-oh officer, we've had a doozy of a day" bit that makes me crack up every time). However it was still a good time and Dale is still one of the hottest man in horror.
7. Motel Hell (1980): Found out about this one through Stephen Graham Jones' Indian Lake trilogy and I wasn't expecting much from it so I was delighted when I found out how funny it was. Great time for slasher lovers, darkly funny, great performances, some really neat imagery (altho I could've done without the sound the "plants" made, like nails on a chalkboard). Just a silly good time.
8. No One Will Save You (2023): I appreciated the risks this movie took and its story but I struggled to get invested at all. Maybe the alien element just wasn't for me, the minute I saw one of the aliens (which kudos to the film for not beating around the bush and going straight into it) I just stopped caring. I did have a good time overall tho and I was pleasantly surprised at, again, the risks taken and the resistance to spelling every thing out to the audience. The ending was pretty neat.
9. Shutter (2004): The winner of my little poll and I'm grateful to everyone who voted for it. I have no idea how this film ended up on my watchlist but I had been putting it off for while because ghost movies are still one of the subgenres of horror that terrifies me the most. I am glad I was pushed to see this because not only was I not that scared (no really, I didn't even jump that much, I certainly was much calmer than when watching Exorcist III, I am so brave) but I really loved the film's atmosphere and visuals. It's rare, I feel, to see a horror movie so awash with light more or less constantly and still retaining a very compelling moodiness and tension. Very unique atmosphere and that ending wowed me. Also was I the only one to read Natre as trans? I even felt like the film was implying it for a while.
10. Creep (2014): Creep was also in my little poll and, when it ended, I realised I felt slightly disappointed it hadn't won. So instead of waiting on an excuse to watch it, and feeling emboldened by my frankly supernatural bravery during Shutter, I decided to just watch it. And it was the calmest I've ever felt during a found footage film. Seriously not one of the jumpscares got me, that's absolutely unheard of with me. But that didn't make me have any less of a good time. I thought it was hilarious (but obviously not funny in a way that I would recommend it to most people I know), Duplass was magnetic, and I really enjoyed the storytelling. It was also pretty close in some ways to a wrestling storyline that I'm very invested in at the moment so maybe that contributed to how tranquil a time I had. Again, if I owned a cinema and was sick in the head I'd do a double feature with this and the 2022 documentary Mister Organ.
11. Creep 2 (2017): I hate those Reader X Fictional Character fics that haunt tags on here but that's what that film was and I had a good time with it.
If you've read this far: wow. (and see you soon for part 2)

omgggg yes i wanna ask u every one haha
6 13(Kyle n stan) 12 17 :0000
6. Has fandom ever made you enjoy a pairing you previously hated?
I don’t thiiiink so? The pairings I hate are pretty set in stone. The closest I can think of is that I never really cared for Bunny that much but then some cute art made me go ‘well sure why not’ and now I love that Butters was basically Kenny’s sugar daddy in Post Covid as he was getting off the ground. But I never hated the pairing so I don’t think that counts.
12. Is there an unpopular arc that you like that the fandom doesn’t? Why?
Actually yes! I… I like Season 20. I know it’s not the best season but I genuinely do enjoy the Skankhunt arc and how the Broflovskis were the main characters for once. I like that it expanded on Gerald and confirmed that he plays favorites and actually resents that Kyle takes after his mother. And I loved Kyle and Ike versus Sheila! I also really like the Cartman/Heidi plot, with the seeds of manipulation and abuse being sewn in that season and then expanded upon in 21. I just think their whole relationship was well done and confirmed a lot of things about how Cartman would act as a boyfriend - love bombing, isolating, jealousy, paranoia, etc. I also love how when Kyle brought everyone together to troll, Stan was like “for what” and Kyle was like “NO TIME JUST DO IT” and Stan just goes “okay!” and runs off because he will literally do anything for Kyle. So yeah, unpopular opinion but I enjoy Season 20 even with all its plot holes and flaws.
13. Unpopular opinion about Kyle and Stan?
Kyle: I think this is less an unpopular opinion about HIM and more an unpopular opinion about how fandom treats him, but I really dislike the constant debate about masc/femme… it’s been going on since at least the 2000’s when I started watching the show and it just goes through the same cycle over and over with people doubling down on their preferences and going to extremes that result in the character being sometimes unrecognizable on both ends of the spectrum. Personally I’ve never been a fan of super masc interpretations or, like, Jersey Kyle being a thing, but I don’t think Kyle is particularly femme either. I think the show does a good job of portraying a well rounded character who has both ‘masc’ and ‘femme’ traits, though I think Matt & Trey lean more heavily on character tropes that are often filled by girls (such as being the nag, the wet blanket, the nurturing family oriented one, the one needing saving, even the fiery redhead trope) for whatever reason. The best versions of Kyle I’ve seen or read have always been somewhere in the middle because then he comes off as more multifaceted. It’s the age old Fingerbang argument of tough vs sweet… he’s both! He’s always been both and I try to achieve that balance in my own interpretation.
Stan: Also an unpopular opinion about fandom rather than the character… Stan is both a sports guy and an animal guy. He’s also a board game guy and a music guy. He’s a multifaceted dude with a wide range of interests! Being into football doesn’t mean he can’t be into the other things, and people saying he’s into football doesn’t mean they’re ignoring the other stuff. Humans are typically into multiple things, and Stan is no exception. He can be a dork and a jock at the same time. He can be big and buff and also empathetic with a soft spot for animals. He can be a quarterback and still like metal music. He can be masc and sensitive at the same time. So I guess this complaint is similar to what I said about Kyle in that I think shoving Stan into one box, regardless of what that box is, is doing a disservice to his character.
17. Instead of XYZ happening, I would have made ABC happen…
Pretty typical answer, but instead of shifting the show’s focus onto Randy and Tegridy Farms I would have gone back to the roots and focused on the boys. Everything about the show is better when it’s about the kids being kids. Randy is best when he’s utilized in moderation.

once again here is my weekly roundup post of what I'm watching/reading/etc. once again none of this is necessarily a recommendation, except the bits where I talk about my own fic. obviously everyone should read my fic
listening (podcast): nothing new here. continuing with the Wing episodes of Great Gundam Project, which continue to make me want to watch Gundam at all times. also keeping up with Palisade (Friends at the Table), my beloved, I love it when an actual play podcast episode is an extended discussion on spycraft and the changing political landscape, and also watching someone else flip a coin
also, I've listened to less A More Civilized Age recently because I'm less interested in KOTOR now that they're covering that, but I did listen to their episode on the imminently-closing Disney World Starcruiser attraction which. oof. great podcast episode, unsurprising that the ~experience was uhhhhh not worth how many thousands of dollars it costs
listening (music): changed the CD in my car to One-X by Three Days Grace. sorry for almost exclusively listening to music that was used for AMVs in the 2000s.
however! for once I listened to new music, the new Troye Sivan single, Got Me Started. nothing particularly smart to say here, it's fun and catchy and makes me wish it was 2018 and I was back in grad school having a single overpriced drink in a gay bar and failing to psych myself up enough to flirt with anyone
reading: still working my way through Rule of Wolves (truly would be more interesting if Leigh Bardugo did not always shy away from the political marriages that she teases at, at least then the political intrigue would have to actually happen on the page) and Water Outlaws (shout out to my new favorite side character, the nonbinary strategist who wants to overthrow the government).
also read the newest KJ Charles novel, A Nobleman's Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel. I always have a lot of fun with her stuff, she understands that life-threatening stakes and also secrets & betrayal are what I personally want in a romance. this one had some very fun intrigue around inheritance & legal loopholes, and also plot-important discussions of religion in Roman Britain. my main complaint isn't even a critique of the book itself, it's just that I as a person have slightly different priorities and I wish one of the main characters had been allowed to stay angry and maybe be more destructive about it. like I'm glad he's happy now that he's had his character development, and I do think it was well done. however. I would've found it personally cathartic if he got to do a few more crimes first
also also, this incredibly scathing academic book review (Was There an Administrative Revolution?, George Zhijian Qiao). it's a delight. I've seen some harsh rebuttals but nothing nearly as much of a masterpiece as this
Tumblr media
watching: continuing to watch Elementary, which has its pros (competently-written mystery stories with fun characters) and its cons (can't tell if the copaganda has gotten more blatant this season or if it's just been building up and I'm getting tired of it)
also continuing my long slow journey of watching Legend of the Galactic Heroes. what a show. love an incredibly homoerotic military sci-fi anime about the narrative construction of history. season 3 has been kind of up and down for me, though, I must say. I love the parts about Reinhard being desperate to die in battle against a "worthy opponent," I love Reuental getting accused of treason presumably to foreshadow him actually doing treason at some point, I love Kircheis haunting the narrative, I love the vastly different tone whenever we see Yang being self-aware about history and his friends getting up to shenanigans. however. whenever the Earth Cult is the central focus I'm reminded how much I don't like that plotline. like. Idk. I'm not an expert but I know more well-informed people than me have talked/written about the prevalence of antisemitic conspiracy theory tropes in anime from this era and uh. that sure is present here and I don't care for it
the other thing I watched this week is 1985 horror film Re-Animator. my first note is "oh he's such a little freak I love him" (about the titular guy who reanimates the dead) and that really sums it up I think. is it a good movie? I mean. probably not. but I could write an entire thesis on the themes of procreation vs necromancy and how that subtextually makes the central conflict of the film a love triangle, and sometimes that's what really matters
playing: ran a session of Blades in the Dark while partially out-of-it from the flu shot/covid booster combo. this was the third session of a single score, and by the end of it everyone only had one (1) remaining stress box but somehow no one trauma-ed out while escaping the ancient winged robot/ghost lady whose gambling hall they were robbing (they stole her reality-bending dice that she made out of her own bones)
I've been enjoying Ace Attorney 5 more this week, the second half of 5-3 and the beginning of 5-4 have been a lot of fun. it really is a shame that Robin's gender is handled Like That because otherwise 5-3 would be such a good case. I'm not far enough into 5-4 to say much about it other than that I like it so far but truly my main observation is, if two astronauts were on the launch pad, and one of them killed the other with a knife, would that be fucked up or what?
making: made butternut squash pasta sauce with the rest of the squash left over from last week's muffins. we used this recipe, largely because it involved roasting the squash in the oven instead of standing over a stove waiting for liquid to reduce (substituted oat milk for the half-and-half, it turned out fine and just didn't needed the added pasta water)
Tumblr media
here it's on mushroom ravioli, but we also added it to baked mac & cheese to add some more vegetable to that
drinking: sorry that all of this is so aggressively seasonal, unfortunately I love a lot of ~fall flavors~. anyway. shout out to Citizen Cider's Baker's Dozen (cider donut flavored cider). it's not as sweet as other cider donut ciders I've had, since Citizen's stuff tends to be fairly dry, but it still has the cinnamon flavor and it's very tasty
Tumblr media
writing: mostly I've been editing the same t4t yurivain fic I've been working on for months, but I'm running out of shareable snippets of that and really I need to just post the damn thing. and I've also written a little bit more of a self-indulgent vibes- & motif-heavy Great Ace Attorney fic so uh. here's this:
They’d been at sea without stopping for a while now, but land was drawing into view once again, if he looked west where the sky was still dark. Maybe his friends, the friends he must’ve had once, were still out there, beyond the sea. Maybe they were looking for him. Maybe they were waiting for him in London. Maybe that was why he needed to go there so badly. Or maybe they were all gone, and he, left behind alone, had business to finish on their behalf before he could rejoin them. The sea slapped against the hull of the ship, and there was the frayed edge of a memory there too, a familiarity with ships, with the sounds that the sea could make, that went back farther than his few months’ employment as a dock worker and a deckhand.

Thanks for leaving me some fanfiction asks too!!
How long ago did you start reading or writing fanfiction? Damn, I had to been when I was around about twelve or maybe thirteen. I don't know if anyone remembers the-ndotcom message boards, various Degrassi message boards (mainly Degrassi boards aka DB, anyone around, I honestly doubt it?), and of course, fanfictiondotnet my online life in the mid-2000s.💗
When I was third grade, I remember writing things that resembled fanfiction. Typically based off of some shows I saw (such as Sabrina the teenage Witch, TGIF line up was awesome) or books I read like The Boxcar Children or Junie B, for these writing journal prompts for school the teacher would assign us. When I say it's all cringe and embarrassing as hell, Let's just say I'm glad no evidence of that writing existed. That wasn't even the tip of the iceberg there, I also wanted to *be* a friggin' author. I'd even include these cheesy bios for each 'book' I would make for myself bc I'd always see them in books I read in childhood.
Fast forward to 2003, my first fanfiction (when I knew I was writing fanfiction) was a doozy for Degrassi written about Sean, Craig, and Emma in some weird season 2 timeline with a love triangle, an ill-fated camping trip, Sean's newly sober mother made an appearance in the form of a camp organizer desperate to reconnect with her son and bring him home much to his chagrin, and other things I forgot about and wouldn't wanna think much on. I was basically winging it. I'm afraid it's gone. I had notebooks and notebooks filled with stories around this time.
10. Worst writing habits? Abandoning and giving up without a doubt. A horrid habit that becomes tempting when I get writer's block, and then I just start the hell over and make something totally new and forget about it drop it like a bad habit, and the cycle comes back around like a shitty boomerang. I then will read the old one months or even years later and be filled with regret or have five million new ideas for said abandoned story. Maybe then I rework it in the future someday or in a whole dif story which has been done before. I am already my own worst critic, but I hate super flaming, negative criticism that shit doesn't help anyone except be tempted to give up.
Some fic I abandoned needed to be, such as the Zoemund vehicle in a weird alternate season thirteen titled The Starlet and Dealer. Not that I need to explain myself, but I didn't feel right writing something portraying a couple with literally no chance on any planet, not even interested in men on the whole didn't make much sense. Also who would read that considering all that? It's available on fanfictiondotnet who cares? I moved on it's never gonna have an ending.
Backtrack has more of a chance of getting an ending, and yes, it's an *almost* ten-year-old fic, just saying.😄😄😄
Another habit is simply beating myself up, comparing myself and just simply hating on myself which I gotta stop doing. Honorable mention, stuff like not being in the mood to write, or getting too much on my plate and then not writing.
15. One-shots or multi-chapters? Multichapters Angst? Yes. Fluff? Yes. Smut? I'm not that brave ha, not for a lack of trying. I usually do the ol' Disney-style cut away. I'm so lame. Hurt/comfort? Yes. Fantasy? Nah. Romance? My bread and butter🥰. Which one is your favorite? Hmm I'd say romance with multiple chapters all the way! Which one is your least favorite? My least favorite is when the protag gets pregnant and the whole story is just fucked after that because it just doesn't interest me. It's just so unoriginal and a little predictable. Unpopular or popular opinion who cares, not every love story or romance ends with a baby or a pregnancy 🤷‍♀️. I'm down for a wedding that would be something fun to tackle in writing. No, really though, out of the listed, I'd say I don't care for fantasy.
16. What’s your favorite headcanon or trope? For semma related fic's stories, I like incorporating things such as emphasis on photographs, flashbacks to past events, and some other memories from their past relationships with one another or things we didn't get to see. For example, Emma had this little box with moments like movie ticket stubs, Sean's old denim jacket (before he started wearing hoodies), Emma's retired dolphin pants, obviously photographs, a few burned mix CDs, letters, and or notes passed from class, and more miscellaneous items.
As for Emma and Jay another Degrassi pairing I write often, for example, I like including a treehouse motif. It's a long story, but in my invented backstory for Jay, Connie (Fancy) is his mother, She left his father for Mr. Edwards (Darcy and Clare's father) she met at the strip club. They had an affair resulting in pregnancy so there's a drama with that. Obviously, Jay and Darcy clash (naturally) and act like they're not related at school is an arrangement beneficial to both for Darcy's popularity and Jay had a reputation to uphold and also there's Jay's young maybe five year old half-sister from Randall and Connie named Christina affectionately nicknamed Chrissy. Jay resents his mother for leaving their father and making this new family with these stuck-up people he seems to detest and what it did to his father who had fallen in a reclusive depression since their divorce.
Chrissy idolizes Jay and serves as an honorary shipper for Emma and Jay, and sometimes provides comic relief. At Jay's dad's house is where the treehouse comes in, and Jay's super attached to it and his father too who he is still close with. The treehouse is a special spot for Jay. He eventually brings Emma into his world and treehouse, and the setting symbolizes a lot in their relationship. All this lore was created long before Jay or Darcy had a canon backstory or last names purely based on speculation. There's also related Jay/Alex lore about their past relationship, invented things from their dysfunctional childhoods. I also have a host of headcanons for Emma, Manny, and JT's childhood memories growing up together.
For tropes, I dig the first love/true love, mutual pining, enemies to lovers, slow burns, and secret relationships/forbidden love is always fun to write. I recently attempted a fake dating story Faking It/(a03)
This all is a lot of fun to write. Thanks Emma! I hope you also like writing responses to these type of questions! I’m always available and down for more questions about fanfiction! 💌

THE POINT ABOUT SHIVER BEING A CASHGRAB THAT GOT DERAILED
i’m actually semi-qualified this time! i’ve done a lot of research into publishing, bc i want to Get Published, and i happen to have recently written a small essay on maggie stiefvater so i have info about how shiver came to be.
i also have a lot of anger. i will try to contain it. ahem. also i apologize to the person/people who made the cashgrab allegations originally, i am not mad at you so much as at the general world/attitude. patpat. we’re all good buddy
basically, i don’t think shiver was a cashgrab. i try not to have parasocial relationships with authors, but i do think maggie stiefvater is dedicated enough to authenticity to not, like, do that. specifically i remember reading this blog post about author-reader and reader-author responsibility.
everything i’m about to say, unless stated otherwise, comes from maggie’s interview on the First Draft podcast. i’m too lazy to track down links, but i’ll try to at least say where i got things from.
so, shiver is maggie’s third book. the first, she sold to a small publishing house for an advance that was around $2000 that’s small as fuck. the average advance is $25,000, the median is $50,000, and those numbers if memory serves come from a 2021 survey of debut authors.
(average and median, for people who are curious, are so far apart because most advances are on the smaller side, but big six and seven figure outliers affect the median. i think. i gave a speech on this but that was six months ago. i may be getting them backwards, the principle stands.)
so anyway, maggie sells her first book, ballad, buys a mattress, and keeps writing. she sells its sequel, lament, and also happens to have shiver ready at the same time. the house also wants shiver, so the two go together. ballad and lament both come out very quietly. shiver comes out about a year and a half later (i don’t know why, publishing is fickle), and immediately lands on the nyt bestseller list. this was august 2009. mstief couldve very well written it bc of the twilight paranormal romance boom, was probably writing it around 2005, 2006. lament was published january 2008, meaning both books had probably been bought in 2006 or 2007. but we don’t know what her thinking was.
small house, quiet releases, and none of the Peak twilight tropes. somehow i don’t think maggie was aiming for, or expecting, a cash grab.
and i hate this! i hate this assumption. not bc i think a very famous very successful author needs to be defended on tumblr, but because it’s such a common assumption that authors (especially ya, especially fantasy romance) are just out for money. it sucks.
first of all, publishing is almost impossible to make a living in. see those advances up there? they’re split into chunks. right now, usually quarters, each to be paid on a specific milestone of the publishing process. often, when the book comes out an author has not received all or even most of their advance payments. yes, that is stupid. we hate it too. and you can’t receive royalties until after the advance is paid, so that 25k or 50k or what-have-you may take two or three years to get to you. and then there’s taxes and a 15% cut for your agent. @xiranjayzhao (ohgod i’m so scared to tag you if you see this hii) has spoken before about how they could not live off the money from iron widow, despite it being a huge bestseller.
it’s very difficult to make a living off of books. it’s even more difficult to make a living off of books while being honest. people with ghostwriters or ai help or just a lot of determination can churn out dozens of crap romance novels and perhaps make that work. and that’s valid. yknow, i respect the hustle.
but quality and authenticity take time and this industry moves SO goddamn slow that even if you can write a sellable book in a month it’ll be two years before it comes out so what’s the point in writing to the current market?
i don’t care what you think privately about maggie stiefvater or shiver but i DO care that there’s this strange culture that if something is a little bit tropey or a little too much like something popular it has to be a cash grab. that authors are doing this for the money. some are. most aren’t.
maybe i’m just a bit sensitive bc i’m working towards hopefully the final round of edits on a book heavily inspired by six of crows and i agree wholeheartedly with the blog post i linked above. i’ve ranted before about how important authenticity in writing is to me and how much i hate the implication that i value quantity over quality or whatever the fuck.
so here’s a post that is probably too long with a whole lot of numbers to tell you that sometimes people are actually honest. and sometimes people do care about art for art’s sake. and if you don’t like a book, that’s okay, but at least dislike it for accurate reasons, thank you
