The Taste of Power (Young! President! Coriolanus Snow x Reader)

How to build a language self-study plan

So I’ve noticed, upon combing through pages and pages of youtube videos and google blogs, that rarely does anyone ever actually tell you what you should be studying. There’s a reason for this ! Everyone is different and at a different level, different motivation. It’s impossible to create a study plan that is perfect for everyone... which is why it can also be agonizing to make one for yourself. 

“How am I supposed to know what’s important to study, if I don’t speak the language?” 

Well that’s a good question! You need to gauge how far you’ve come so far and how far you’d like to get. It’s easiest when you are starting from zero because you can learn the alphabet, numbers, basic phrases, and basic grammar. Easy peasy. You can go cover to cover in a text book. 

Here’s a check-list to create the perfect study plan special to you. 

1. What do I know already? What do I need to work on?

- is it worth starting a textbook, if you feel like you already know half of it? It might be worth completing the given exercises and if you achieve an 80% or higher (or you could give that lesson to someone else) then you can move on from that specific point.

- create a list of the points that you still need to master

2. What do I need to include in a study session?

- naturally there needs to be a focus or a few different focuses of a study session, whether it’s a specific activity or a grammar point. I recommend creating a list of things you want to get done (a.) every day, (b) every week, and (c) every month. These goals must be quantifiable. For example, every week I read two news articles in German. As a reflection, I then write a summary of the event of the article as well as a personal opinion. That’s an easy box to check.

- you need a reflection. It’s important to really take time to reflect on how you feel about the time spent and the materials used. What could you do better next time? What went well? 

3. When is the best time to study? 

- are you more active/focused in the morning or in the night? The key is consistency. If you have a routine, you’re far more likely to adhere to it. I know that my own schedule is highly changeable and that can make it very difficult, but I’ve found if I wake up in the same period of time every morning, brush my teeth, make my bed, and then sit down to my work, I feel far more productive. 

- how much should I study at a time? The recommended period is 25 minutes from the Pomodoro Method with a five minute break. You can research time-management techniques but ultimately it comes down to you. 

4. How do I take notes ?

- IT”S ALL ABOUT YOU! What I do is take messy notes in classes or on my own and then I transcribe the finished page to my Notion page. It gives me a chance to make the notes neater and also to review a little bit. I will say though statistically, you will remember better if you write by hand. 

- I like to have a column on each page for words I didn’t know

Just plain babbling about shorthand

Since reading Dracula might be the first time or one of the first times that people have heard about shorthand, I thought I'd take this thin excuse to infodump. Because I find it fascinating and want to share. (Warning ahead of time, watch out for how many darn times I say "for example" in this post).

For some background, shorthand systems of writing have existed for millennia, but in the English-speaking world, the two most common and well-established systems of shorthand are Pitman and Gregg. Odds are that the Harkers are writing in Pitman. It's the older system (created in 1837) and is to this day more common in England and the Commonwealth. Gregg is more common in America and was introduced in 1888, either only a few years after or a few years before Dracula takes place. There were also numerous other less popular systems floating around at the time.

Pitman and Gregg and most other shorthand systems are phonetic. (Teeline is a more modern shorthand system based on a simplified alphabet, which is also quite popular). Simply put, each sound is reduced to one stroke of the pen. In Gregg, for example, the sound "k" (which includes the letter "c) is a medium-sized forward arch, "a" is a large circle, and "ch" is a short, downward diagonal line. So, instead of writing "catch" you just combine the symbols for "k-a-ch." Instead of "become" you just write "b-k-m." (These "words" are known as outlines).

Some shapes represent multiple sounds. For example, a small circle stands for the vowels in "bit," "bet," and "beet." A large circle stands for the vowels in "cap" and "cape." This might sound like it would be confusing rather than simplifying, but it's generally clear from the context.

There are a bunch of other means which allow you to write more quickly. Common words are further shorted into "brief forms." For example, "the" is represented by "th," "after" by "a-f," and "were" by "e-r." Some common endings or beginnings are also abbreviated, so that "sh" at the end of a word can stand in for "-tion" and "f" can mean "for-" or "fore-" at the beginning of a word. Thus, "Permission" is "p-r-m-sh" and "forgive" is "f-g-v." Common phrases can be combined into a single outlines. For example, for "to be" you can write "t-b" instead of "t-u[space]b." "I have not been able" can be "a-v-n-b-a." (The large circle "a" is the brief form for the word "I" in one of the rare quirks of Gregg that isn't basically intuitive).

Pitman Shorthand is very similar to Gregg (or, more accurately, Gregg is similar to Pitman). Other than using different symbols (for example, in Pitman "k" is a short forward line) Pitman differs from Gregg mostly by its use of the thickness of strokes to differentiate sounds. For example, "g" is also a short forward line, with the only difference being that the line for "g" is drawn thicker than "k."

I learned shorthand absolutely because of Dracula, though for convenience I learned Gregg. As of right now, I'm pretty out-of-practice, and honestly I was never particularly fast. (At my best, I probably was on average as fast writing shorthand as cursive longhand; I think faster than printing, though).

If you're at all interested, I really recommend learning some form of shorthand. It's useful in note-taking or when you don't want people to be able to read your writing (if, you know, you're kidnapped by a vampire or trying to write fanfic at work). It's also just a fun hobby and a nifty skill to be able to say you have.

In my opinion, if you want to learn shorthand, Gregg Simplified is a solid option, because the materials are accessible and the system is a good middle-ground between easiness to learn and quickness to write. I taught myself just following along with the Gregg Shorthand Manual Simplified. The book is broken up into 67 short "lessons." I did one or two lessons a week, maybe a few hours of work, and I was "fluent" in less than a year. I also bought a Gregg Simplified Dictionary, but all you need is the Manual.

(Note that the manual is written both assuming you're probably some kind a secretary and in the fifties. So, you'll learn brief forms for super-useful phrases like "dear sir" or "remit." For practice, they have you read and copy these sample letters in shorthand, and it's almost hilarious how almost all the letters to men are about business matters and the letters to women are advertising sales. There is one spectacular letter that's a man writing to a newspaper to cancel his subscription, because he's moved into a house in the suburbs with another man who gets the same paper. I'm legit tempted to go through the manual again just to find that letter.)

Fun fact! The fastest shorthand stenographer ever recorded wrote faster than the fastest typist.

Also fun fact! It's not uncommon for individual people to invent their own brief forms based on words that they use commonly. So, Jonathan might have been writing "c-a-r-p" (or the Pitman equivalent) for "Carpathian" or Mina writing "t-b" for "Whitby" or both of them writing "v-a-m" for vampire. And I'll bet credits to navy beans they had specific brief forms for their favorite trains.

The Enochian Language A History, the Magical Language as described by John Dee

John Dee was no stranger to Esoteric practice and spent much of his life pursuing the truths of the world. He wrote prior works filled with symbolism and occult knowledge, one known as, Monas Hieroglyphica, written in 1564. To John Dee the rational and metaphysical were in many ways one and the same, this led him down a path of attempting to reach the divine in many rituals in which he used scrying, a method in which you look into a polished surface or bowl of water to perceive the spiritual realm. By himself, he had very little success until the fateful meeting between him and the alchemist Edward Kelley, who as luck would have it was gifted in the art of scrying.

In 1582, With the assistance of E. Kelley, J. Dee was able to begin the path of learning through these scrying sessions, "Angelical" or as most know it today "Enochian", and many new forms of occult magick, which would change The Occult World for centuries to come.

A few days later, Kelley started receiving what became the book Liber Loagaeth ("Book [of] Speech from God"). The book consists of 49 great letter tables, or squares made of 49 by 49 letters (however each table has a front and a back side, making 98 tables of 49×49 letters altogether).[a] Dee and Kelley said the angels never translated the texts in this book.

Is The Angelic Language "Real"

It intrigues many scholars to this day and while many argue the language to be a hoax it has indefinably become a part of the occult sphere as it's used in many people's practices to this day. So while the language itself may or may not be man-made. No one doubts that the language has spawned a plethora of ideas both in the occult realm as well as in the Fictional writing sphere. It has been seen used in Shows like CW's Supernatural, As well as Games like Bayonetta in which they use spells spoken in the language. It has been used in secret societies and can be found in many grimoires around the world. The language is as real as you want it to be, I for one find spells in Enochian Dramatic with a hint of flair that I just love, I encourage others to give the language a shot and to learn at least a few phrases.

How Do I Write In The Language

Well, it's rather simple if you just want to use it as its own coded language. The alphabet is almost fully compatible with English, and many have used it as a way to encode their Grimoires and Spells from prying eyes, similar to the Witches Language.

These translations are rough but they are fun little phrases so you can get some Enochian under your belt, if you would like you can check out this site here as it is an Enochian to English translator and it lets you create sentences and phrases to impress or annoy your friends lol.

hi!! so i've tried a lot of things to learn korean but i'll rec a few ive really liked

learn korean in korean: this is literally all in korean but it is slow and i felt like i was understand a lot

talk to me in korean: this one is good too, very helpful for learning vocab and korean phrases. they also have books and other resources. its probably the most popular resource for learning korean!

Korean from zero: this workbook series was nice, some just are straight up in korean and confusing but this one was great for practicing writing and learning vocab and grammar

there is a point where the best way is going to be a class or tutor because self study can only get you so far :/ but these things will help u decide if its worth the money and effort of classes.

you can use duolingo to learn the alphabet and some basic words if you want but it advances with no explanation on how grammar works for sentences so you're just memorizing things and not really learning correctly so i didnt like it

I can't stop thinking about the HTDIO scene where the characters read the blog post

Content note: the quotes from the blog post will have ableism in them, which is called out in the context of the show but may not be what people want to see on their tumblr feeds.

I've seen the show twice, once in early January and again at the closing performance, so I didn't pick up on everything (unfortunately I forgot what Tommy's line was and until my 2nd time seeing it I misremembered which character had a specific line.) The first time I saw it I felt the breath get sucked out of the room at the opening line that Dr. Amigo read; I didn't get quite the same feeling the 2nd time but I saw it but I feel like the closing show was more fans seeing it one last time/who had seen it already and had somewhat braced themselves for the scene. (That being said, the 2nd audience cheered more when Remy's livestream included the phrase "Nothing about us without us, while I heard less of a reaction from the audience my 1st time).

But one thing that stands out to me about that scene is how the lines are perfectly crafted to tie into the characters' storylines and hurt each character individually.

To break it down by character with the caveat that the quotes are gonna be incomplete paraphrases(in alphabetical order except for Drew because I remember his line being last in the scene):

Caroline: "most will never marry or have children" (a few scenes ago she was singing about hanging family pictures down the hallway with Jay) (when I first saw the show I thought this was Marideth's line, tying into her conversation with her dad about dressing like Santa for her hypothetical future children)

Jessica: "most may never be able to live on their own" (throughout the show she has been working on trying to move out of her mother's house by learning life skills like cooking and the fact that her crush on Tommy is partly due to her search for a boyfriend who can drive so she no longer has to use unreliable government transport)

Marideth: "the nightclub is full of loud noises that can cause meltdowns and tantrums" (Marideth's sensory issues are prominent throughout the show--her opening line is an opinion of the scent of soap, she hates zippers that touch her skin [at least that's my interpretation of hoodie zippers being ok when dress zippers are bad] and the loud sounds in the diner stress her out. However, we also see that she has strategies to deal with unpleasant sensory input, like noise-canceling headphones)

Mel: "kings and queens for one night" (erases their existence as a nonbinary person)

Drew: "when you think you can't do something, think of the young boy with autism asking a girl to dance" (not gonna lie I also saved this one for last because there's so much to unpack. Given the fact that Drew is a high school senior, "young boy" is pure infantilization. At the end of Act 1, we see him want to ask Marideth to the dance but end up asking her if she wants to borrow his book about Pangea instead. In the long run this works because the book helps Marideth process her feelings for Drew, but in the short run the article line looks like it was written to taunt Drew for chickening out at the last second. This line in the article also ties back into the beginning of the song under control, when Drew contemplates his life thus far and the pressure he feels to "be the poster child for if he can then you can")

I just feel like the way the lines are individually crafted to each character's storyline needs to be talked about. Also if anyone can remember what Tommy's line was (with or without a connection to his storyline) that would be appreciated.

I’m just dropping by to say that by now I probably owe my life to you for all the good work you do popularising Sumerian and making it fun and explaining it clearly and well, because your blog has saved me so many times when I wanted to reference a word or build a joke around a Sumerian phrase in my own writing while not knowing the language at all (lmao). I used to study History at uni for a bit a few years ago and it stoked my love for the Mesopotamian culture, but I’ve never learned either the languages itself or how they work really (& now I’m mostly using what rudimentary knowledge I have to be witty in my fanfics), so between your blog and the PSD this is pretty much all I have as references. Blowing a kiss in your direction!!!

(And a follow-up question, out of pure curiosity: how/where/why did you learn Sumerian? :o And how difficult was it? I imagine a language that uses a completely different script and *works* in a different way to alphabetic script we’re used to could be challenging to wrap your head around.)

Hello, and thank you for the kind words! I do my best to make Sumerian accessible, since there are very few resources out there that are comprehensive, easy-to-use, accurate and free.

I've answered before about my experience learning Sumerian - here's a short version if you like. It's not an easy language, but that's mostly because the resources that are out there are designed for e.g. grad students in NELC, not for more casual learners. My recommendation for those wishing to learn the language is to ignore cuneiform (as best you can) to start, and focus on speaking the language, the grammar, etc. Hence why this blog is titled "A blog of conversational Sumerian", as I myself learn best through conversation and translation rather than written cuneiform. But, of course, your mileage may vary, and different learning styles work best for different people. In any case, my ask box is always open, I've got some very old videos on youtube, and I'm available on twitch too if you'd like to chat Sumerian over there!

One question (in fact there are several, sorry for the inconvenience): Does the Administration give Jay field work and vehicle repair and things just because they can't understand Jay's writing?

And I'm not saying this because Jay has unintelligible handwriting, I'm saying this because Ninjago has its own alphabet. So Jay does his mission reports or general paperwork but when he presents it all the others see is just a bunch of lines and symbols that barely resemble letters or simplified Japanese kanji.

If that's the case, does Jay teach Kaida some of the Ninjago language or writing to make it like his "secret language"? It could also be a way for Jay to remember where he came from and/or his parents, with the bonus of being able to write in a report "I hate this job." and no one will know what it means besides Jay.

Along with this, there is also the question: Does Jay have any Ninjago customs that seem strange to The Administration? Not only that he grew up in the desert and from there he develops certain habits, I mean as a custom or a common behavior in Ninjago.

How to bow to ask for forgiveness, thank you, good morning (asking for forgiveness they may have to force you to do it and that is why you bow respectfully); taking off your shoes when you get to your apartment, considering that Ninjago is loosely based on Asian culture, also what would be New Year's Day and All Souls' Day. I imagine Jay not wanting to celebrate All Souls' Day because he doesn't believe his parents are dead or anything, but there is still some respect for the day.

Mainly it's because Jay's skills and powers are too valuable not to have him as a field agent, but just that is also an important factor. I imagine that eventually the more technologically advanced kingdoms would build translators for the other inhabitants' different alphabets and languages after a few years. Although of course, Jay eventually learns the alphabet so he can make reports and read his missions when they enlist him to do that.

I don't know how you guessed it but in fact in chapter 3 Kaida sees Jay working on a blueprint for an invention and actually asks him to teach her the ninjago alphabet so they can use it to communicate. Also the idea of Jay writing messages that no one understands like "I hate my job" or "Sharon is useless" is perfect imao. And yes, Sharon also exists here (thanks @finn-m-corvex)

Yes, a lot actually, especially expressions and phrases that they don't understand. Not only because Jay grew up in the desert and the Administration is basically a big city, but because both kingdoms have a huge time gap. While Ninjago has a more primitive technology and people behave in a less strict way, in the Administration they have more advances but people behave in a much more structured way.

Also Jay and Kaida use the Administration calendar so they don't really know what date it is in Ninjago but they still celebrate the holidays every year.

Hey, so I'm not sure if someone has asked you yet, but I'm fascinated by how you use the Cybertronian language in your transformers fics. How does it work exactly?

This got long, and I’m sorry as always. Thank Primus for read mores.

For starters when I FIRST began working on Resonance and realized I wanted to try putting Cybertronian into it, I read the wiki page, more specifically the opening paragraph:

It should be little surprise, given a moment's thought, that distinct Cybertronian languages exist. The Transformers did not go about speaking English or any other known Earth language long ages ago on their distant metal world. Though the records of such conversations are frequently translated for us, we should not forget that these conversations originally flowed in odd electronic syllables past strange metallic lips, or were etched by alien hands long eons before the first humans painted muddy shapes upon dark cave stone.

‘Fuck.’ Was my first thought. ‘I’m about to try and work an ancient language into this damn fic about a human and an alien robot boning/becoming soul mates…and I want it to be believable.’

‘College linguistics comes back to haunt me.’ Was my second.

So I’ve mashed several continuities together, from the comics to the tv show to the Bay/Knight movies. That sort of gave me a big door way to wedge information through, winding it around plot, and Cade and Prime’s interactions. There’s also more than one alphabet, because of course there is.

I wanted Cade and the Reader to bond as much as Cade and Prime did learning, and Prime teaching him/us. While Cade’s spent a handful of years with the 2.0 team, any lessons would be sort of like Cybertronian 101, rough and dirty. I didn’t want him fluent, (because how?) and reliant on the bots to explain more than they assumed. (Taken shamelessly from my own background. My mom and Uncle speak fluent Spanish but I know broken bits and pieces. I can swear like a sailor though.)

I also leaned into sticking to verbal lessons and displays of the language in action, instead of ‘Cade read a book’ which I think helped make it more…interesting? Hopefully!

Things, phrases, and manners of speaking Cade would be interested in just to help him survive among the bots. The word for ‘I’m a medic, don’t shoot my ass, I can help you!’ is kinda more important than names for Cybertron’s dead Primes or famous landscapes/battles.

Cade can speak Cybertronian better than he can read it, and indeed in Resonance the language is dying among its own kind, sort of like in Atlantis: The Lost Empire. (Not as degraded/gone though.) A younger mech that hatched off Cybertron and grew up amongst the stars only knows what they’ve heard/read or if an older mech transferred the language to them.

I decided to lean into Transformer’s physiology and history and create a few rules to stick to. Here’s a few from my notes, subject to have changed but I don’t think I contradicted them??

1. Transformers do not have a word or specific phrase for ‘please’ in Cybertronian. Instead of ‘Please do/give/take/etc X’ it would simply be removed from the vernacular. You don’t really ask a lot, you demand/take/coerce/threaten.

2. Yes is ‘Affirmative’ and no is ‘Negative’ and used more frequently than yes/no in reply to someone.

4. Short, stilted, and cutting phrases should make up the language when being translated into English. Blunt, but inseparable.

5. Delicate, kind, or sweet terms when being soft or gentle with a treasured person, such as an offspring, friend or mate. Long, lyrical, almost poetic??

6. Repetition to increase intention. “This is very good!” becomes “Good-good-good!” and perhaps engines might be made to purr a little to indicate pleasure/enjoyment/contentment, or optics would be squeezed shut for trust blinks like cats lol!

7. Nonverbal vocalizations slip in and out around Cybertronian as much as English. Static might come across grating to us, but static to a Transformer could mean confusion, alarm, or merely mumbling to oneself. It might not indicate stress—humans hear static and would be troubled, but a mech might be confused if a human heard their staticy sounds and assumed something was wrong. (Reversal, soft and wet sounds are jarring and foreign to Transformers, or usually mean something malfunctioning to them. Whistling from our lips is a great trick, they would think.) Steam whistles, and metal whistles but organic creatures making the noise? Woah!

8. There ARE other dialects but not gunna parse into them deeply or I’ll go nuts and the fic will derail. EX: Vosian (Vos) Vilocitronian (Vilocitron), Kaonic (Kaon) etc. Combatron is a colony thank god,can get away with it dominantly Cybertronian if I need it.

9. Look into Dragon Langauge/Thu’um and study.

10. Cade and Prime are ‘You-and-I’ when talking to one another, their special designation for each other. ‘They-Who-Are-One’ means the same but used by third parties. Prime also uses ‘Light-of-my-Spark’ or Sparklight, and ‘Cade-Beloved’  

Those are old notes, dating back from Res’ early chapters in 2019.

Part of what helped me picture how I wanted the language to work was translating bot’s names into what I imagined their ‘true’ designations would be. It became kind of fun, actually. Especially seeing how short names could turn into long, almost lyrical titles. I wanted Cybertronian to sound harsh, heavy, and grating to humans in the fic, but also at its heart be flowing, connected and ever changing like the bot’s themselves.

Some were self explanatory to their ‘English’ version, some more esoteric. Starscream became ‘Screams-Like-Dying-Starlight.’ Terrifying but it paints a picture of what he does, what kind of fight he will give you, etc. As did ‘In-His-Crosshairs’ or ‘Drifts-Through-Darkest-Skies.’ Saying that 'Crosshairs and 'Drift' were what they were called on English seemed like a good way to show that we, as humans, are the aliens to them as much as they're alien to us?

Optimus Prime had other titles that both worked as nicknames or insults, depending on who said it their inflection. ‘He-Who-Reigns-War’ was meant to be heartbreaking as it was, well, kinda true. He doesn’t like it, Cade doesn’t like it. Many Autobots won’t use it.

Because I don’t study linguistics/zero time to study as much as I’d like, I have to absolutely work on rules and tweak them on the fly. I try to stick their speech being present, more than temporary.

‘Did you get hurt?’ would become ‘Hurting?’ and ‘I don’t like this at all, this is scary!’ becomes ‘Do-Not-Like! Scared!’

I wanted the Cybertronian dialect in Resonance to be emotive and rich in gestures, and firm statements. Abstract but ‘in the moment’ and very much still reliant on body language and tone versus tons of explanations or verbal hypothetical’s. There are noises and sounds humans cannot pronounce in this language, but there are work arounds within reason and, of course, a Cybertronian listening a human speak any Earth language can engage almost within minutes through learning and copying.

Hi! Thank you for being my first request, I hope you enjoy it <3

Peter had been spending most of his summer either on missions with the rest of the avengers, on patrol, or just overall saving the city in one way or another. Today was the first day off he had in a while and he decided that he would spend it at his favorite comic store. He grabbed his backpack and headed out of his apartment making his way down the street. 

After walking a few blocks Peter had made it to his current favorite store Uncanny Comics and More this place had everything that Peter could possibly want to spend his time on in one place. Specializing in comics they held a wide variety of genres but they also sold tabletop games, figurines, lego sets, movies, and so much merchandise.  The back of the store even had a decently sized seating area where people could play together, read or simply just spend the day away, which was exactly what Peter was going to do. 

Pushing the door open and making his way inside he could feel the cool air conditioning hit his skin. As he started to browse the isles he noticed the new employee working the front desk. He seemed to be around his age with his head resting on his hand staring off into space. Peter's hands started to sweat a bit probably just due to the summer heat that has been bothering all of New York this month. 

 A few more minutes of browsing and the employee was now standing on a ladder hanging up a few decorations around the store. Just as the young man was about to step on the top step a few people came from the back of the store and bumped into the ladder. Peter quickly took a few steps forward and successfully caught the employee into a bridal carry. Face to face both men flushed from both the adrenaline from the fall and the new found closeness. 

“Are you okay? That could have been bad, I'm glad that I was there to catch you!” Peter started to ramble before the other man quickly grabbed his attention and pointed to a button on his shirt next to his name tag that read, “Hi! Im Deaf”. Y/N then took his open hand and pressed his fingers to his chin before moving his hand forward and downwards to Peter. 

“Oh! Uh you’re welcome! I don’t know much sign language sorry”, said Peter, mouthing his words clearer than usual allowing Y/N to read his lips. The young man smiled and said, “That’s Okay” while signing at the same time. Y/N then pointed behind him to the comic series Peter had been interested in. 

“Oh yeah! I just started this series. Do you like it? Or is there a different series you’d recommend?”. 

Y/N started to grin while giving a large thumbs up before moving on to a different series picking up the first issue and handing it to Peter. 

“Come talk to me about the comics sometime, let me know if you want any more recommendations, I can check you out over at the register”, Y/N signed as he spoke, quickly at first before slowing down as he noticed Peter paying attention to his hands. 

As he was being checked out he noticed Y/N add a small piece of paper into his bag before handing it to him and wishing him a good day. Peter walked out of the store with a new plan for his day off, teaching himself some sign language.

After reaching his apartment Peter had pulled out his laptop and after a few hours of practice was able to teach himself the ASL alphabet and a few common phrases. Finally deciding to take a break he rummaged through the plastic comic book bag and found the piece of paper at the bottom of the bag.

Peter began to smile after reading the note, he couldn’t believe that he had actually gotten Y/N number. He made sure to text Y/N and from then they started a lengthy conversation about the series that Peter had been reading. The conversation gradually shifted from comics to about themselves and by the end of the night Peter had known that he absolutely had a crush on the comic book clerk. 

After Y/N had gone to sleep he had made sure to study some more signs so that they could have an easier conversation together in person. 

By the end of Peter’s day off he had already decided the first words he’d sign to Y/N, Hi, Do you want to go out on a date with me?

A Guide to Language Domming, Pt. I

Language Play, Qu'est-ce Que c'est?

What is language play?

Language domming, or language play, is a highly immersive activity where a little or sub experiences speech and media exclusively in a foreign language they either don’t know and at all or have very little knowledge of. For the purposes of most of this guide, I’ll be focusing specifically on language play in an AB/DLs or ageplay context, but it is possible to work into some other kinks - I’ll get to that near the end. 

The appeal, especially when you’re dealing with ABs and ageplayers, is pretty clear. Rather than your little having to pretend they’re too little to understand what all the grown-ups are saying, well, they genuinely won’t understand what all the grown-ups are saying. They won’t be able to grasp most of the things you’re saying to them. They won’t be able to read along with storybooks - they’ll just have to look at the pictures and use their imaginations. They’ll consume simple cartoons the way a young toddler would. And all of this, if presented with the right amount of love and care, can make your little feel very, very little. 

I do want to make it clear here that I didn’t invent this idea. A number of bigs, CGs, and doms I’ve spoken to have used native tongues or foreign picture books to make their littles feel little. It’s even come up in some fantasy writing, where an international setting, or even an extraterrestrial one, leaves a little with a babyish inability to communicate. But I haven’t seen it formally spoken about much, so I figured I would share this guide with you all.      

So how does it work?

Language play sessions normally last a few hours, but if you’re feeling adventurous (and very well prepared) you can stretch it for a day or more. The idea is to completely immerse your little in the target language for as long as you’re playing. Speak to them only in that language. Show them cartoons in that language. Read them stories for bedtime and naptime in that language. The more activities you have to help immerse them - children’s board games and card games, toys that say foreign phrases, even alphabet blocks for non-Latin languages - the more wonderful possibilities there are. 

When playing, your little may try to say things to you in English (or whatever you usually speak), and there are a few ways to handle this. You can enforce that they can’t, with spankings and other punishments, or just with a wag of the finger and a reminder of ‘non, non, en français, s'il vous plaît’ or the equivalent. Alternatively, you can just pretend not to understand them, looking quizzical and bemused (but do listen to what they’re saying, in case it’s important). In either case, as long as you don’t break into English yourself, your little will start to get used to it, and will lean more on non-verbal communication and whatever simple words or phrases they’re able to pick up (and often butcher in the cutest possible way). 

Of course, your little one not being able to talk means there’s a whole lot more they’re not going to be able to do for themselves. You’re going to have to choose their activities, so be sure to plan ahead and know your little’s likes well. You’re going to have to give some diaper checks without asking - well, you can ask, but it’s not like they’ll know that you did. You’ll also be the one figuring out the menu, and you may want to feed your little directly to add to the ageplay immersion. 

Because this is one of the more intense ageplay activities, and because communication during play can be difficult, preparation and communication beforehand is key. Learn your little’s likes and limits, make sure to put away any grown-up distractions (work phones, etc.) and set time aside firmly, and have cues in place to use as safewords (and STOP IMMEDIATELY if you see them). Oh, and when you’re done, be sure to have a gentle, warm, snuggle and talk through the experience - your little is going to have a lot they want to tell you, and you might have quite a bit to share as well. 

What if I’m not fluent in a foreign language? Can I play too?

YES! Believe it or not, you don’t have to be native or fluent in your target language to use it for a wonderful, immersive play experience. In Part II of this guide, I’m going to walk through some key words and phrases to focus on, so that you can be ready to immerse your little with just a few weeks of practice, a bit of strategic Googling, and a whole lotta love.

For converting to Judaism, do you have to learn Hebrew? I know you have to learn basic words and certain prayers but would I be able to learn Yiddish instead? I’ve already got some basic knowledge of Yiddish and connect to the language more.

All branches of Judaism (Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform) don't require fluency in Hebrew to convert, however, it is advised to be able to recite certain prayers (although many prayer books nowadays have transliterations for important prayers). If you have some knowledge of Yiddish, it will actually be easier for you to learn Hebrew since they use the same alphabet, and there's a lot of Hebrew in Yiddish.

Additionally, just by being in the company of other Jews, and by partaking in services, you'll find that you'll be able to absorb lots of Hebrew words.

So no, you don't need to learn Hebrew, however, services are conducted in Hebrew, and therefore it'll be helpful for you to be able to read Hebrew and understand a few basic phrases, but fluency is not required.

A few words about what it all means under the cut, because hell, I won’t let my shameless overthinking go to waste lol. (It's not a few words, it's long, be prepared).

EDWARD

So, kiwi and pennyroyal mint icing.

The kiwi is interesting, kind of a visual thing. You get that brown fruit, nothing spectacular but all fuzzy and kinda cute, then under that skin (skin that is edible but most often discarded because not very enjoyable to eat) you get that delicious shiny bright green thing! So that is, to me, little old Edward Nygma the forensics guy being discarded in favor of the Riddler. Though I would argue that Ed is tasty too but… he himself wouldn’t quite agree, would he?

As for the pennyroyal mint, I wanted something fresh and delicious and green, just like our Eddie, that would go well with a fruit (at that point I had chosen lime rather than kiwi but both work well with mint), so mint naturally came to mind. I looked into different types of mint, all very tasty, and pennyroyal can be toxic (even caused some deaths!) so I couldn’t choose anything else, really. Also I first misread its binomial name as Mentha Penguin instead of Mentha Pulegium soooo yeah. Do you believe in fate?

And the filling.

Answer to the riddle (I’ve never written a riddle before I hope this wasn’t too bad lol):

Mystery salts: My twentieth is capital, my twelfth a lesser case. But bring them together, and eighty-one they'll make.

“Capital” and “lesser case” are hints, you should look into letters. The 20th letter in the alphabet is T. The 12th is L. Bring T and l together, you get Tl. Tl is 81, because it’s the symbol of thallium, atomic number 81 in the periodic table. Also I called it “mystery salts” as in chemical salts. Soluble thallium salts you could put into food.

Yes it’s fucking THALLIUM FLAVORED. That is actually tasteless, but you’ll definitely start to feel the spice - so to speak - after a few hours. Fortunately, the filling is still delicious thanks to the star fruit base. This one was chosen for obvious reasons aside from being sweet & sour ⭐ ✨ Thallium, I chose for three reasons:

It is a grey metal, nothing special visually, but it makes bright green flames when burned. Good old Ed consumed by Riddler’s fire… Or unleashing his fire through Riddler? Also chemistry is cool and Ed agrees.

Ed’s donut needed to be murdery, obviously. Thallium is extremely toxic and has often been used as poison, including for murder :) Being tasteless is a great advantage in this context.

The guy put a bullet in a cupcake and I thought I’d honor the tradition. Something about him being tasty af but also toxic af. A dapper dude in shiny green is a dangerous thing. That is also why I chose a straight up toxic chemical element instead of looking for a toxic fruit or whatnot - it needed to absolutely not even remotely sound like it belonged there, like the bullet.

OSWALD

See the lace decoration I put there? There’s a nice little explanation behind it.

I was writing about Oswald’s identity, how he became who he is and how he embraced the whole Penguin thing. And I thought it would’ve been sweet if, after Gertrud’s death, he went back to his original name - Kapelput - as a way to honor her and put pride back in the name he discarded before.

So when I started drawing his donut, I really wanted some Hungary and some Gertrud in there, while not overpowering the rest of Pengy. I also wanted some elegant decoration, so I thought I’d check whether Hungary had some nice fabric, embroidery, etc. Something Gertrud would’ve probably liked. And indeed! I found out about Matyó embroidery.

The more I read about it, the more it fit (Source: nlc):

“ ‘Well, that’s no Matyó embroidery’ - we used to say disparagingly about an old-fashioned, slightly tasteless piece of clothing. “ Oswald is nothing if not stylish. He would learn this phrase in Hungarian and insult his pawns during important meetings when he can’t just lash out, hiding the snark under the language barrier.

The name apparently comes from a king, King Mátyás. Nothing less for the king of Gotham.

The most known motif is the red Matyó rose… A red rose is a symbol of love and passion - who better than Oswald, a man of heart and all its whims, could wear it? Also, the story behind this rose is about finding a clever solution to an impossible, dangerous situation, which is also very Oswald. The story, translated as well as I can from the linked article:

“The devil kidnapped the groom of a Matyó bride and demanded a bunch of roses as a ransom. However, since it was during winter, there were no roses blooming anywhere in the area, but the resourceful girl did not despair. She drew a copy of her huge apron, embroidered it with more and more beautiful blooming roses during the night, and then took it to the devil. The devil liked the gorgeous dress and the girl's creativity so much that he was forced to return the groom, so the expected wedding took place without any problems.”

I first drew it in full color, as close as possible to the real-life stuff, but it wasn’t very Oswald, so I only kept the patterns and changed it to dark lace. Just the ghost of his mother - she isn’t there anymore, after all, but her influence and love will follow him until the end.

And now the flavors…

First, the icing:

Apple - the forbidden fruit, of course. You don’t just refuse Oswald anything. If you tell him the apple is forbidden, he’ll soon be an apple magnate (or in this case an apple donut) - and you’ll be dead or worse. I specifically chose hidden rose apple, because it has a secret :) Its flesh is pinkish-red (hence why it works for this icing). You can read as much or as little symbolism as you like into this choice, as apples have a lot of history and beliefs attached to them. Personally, after much reading, I like the general sense of temptation and love it has. Oswald is all about that, passions. Wants. Love. And he’s certainly full of surprises, like the hidden rose… also, “hidden rose” in reference to red flesh. Red rose, then. Passion. How fitting.

Purple yam (ube) - tastes nutty and earthy. Big balls energy. Purple. Works great in pastries including donuts. Sometimes, a simple solution is best.

The filling:

Norton grapes. Thanks NBC’s Hannibal for showing me this one. Same color on the outside and on the inside, unlike most other grapes. “A grape with nothing to hide”, a grape that shows its true colors, a grape that finds strength and value in its identity. I’m talking about Oswald, of course, after he learns to do the same. Notably, Norton grapes are used to make red wine - Ozzie’s favorite thing after Ed - and it’s apparently a good one. I know nothing about wine though lol, I just drink it.

Black Prince Pepper. Ozzie got downgraded from king to prince but oh well, still royalty. I really wanted pepper in there, something well-known to the public but with bite and heat, thunder - something you don’t just bite and get away with it unfazed -, so I looked into purple peppers and found this one! It’s a tiny little pepper, but it can get really hot! It changes colors as it grows: purple, black, red. Oswald’s three colors :) yes I’m counting blood in there :)

I’ll let you decide whether the “it bites back” warning is literal or not.

ANYWAY. Did I spend wayyyyy too long thinking about a donut version of two fictional characters for a silly drawing, neglecting my real-life responsibilities in the process? Absolutely. Do I regret anything? Absolutely not.

Real talk though this was a really fun puzzle to figure out! I love how much thought and research I ended up putting into this. At first I just wanted to make nice looking donuts for the boys but… it got a bit out of hand. If you have any alternative flavours in mind for them I’d love to hear about it!

Language Learning Check-In: June

Assuming I keep up with this I guess I'll make this a monthly thing. I've loved languages for a long time, but this was the first time in a while where I felt like it was my main hobby. I'm currently very into the idea of 'comprehensible input' which is where things are simplified enough and with enough context that you can understand what's going on, even if you can't understand most of the words, and you naturally start picking up both grammar and vocabulary from exposure. I finally quit Duolingo cold turkey.

Thai: I started seriously studying Thai at the end of last month, starting with learning the alphabet and then immediately abandoning that to do pure listening comprehension only. I've been averaging 2hrs a day, a pace I can probably stick to for the next two months since I can watch videos during work, but not after that. This is not counting time spent watching BL since in that case I'm focusing mainly on reading subtitles, although I'm sure it helps a little. The videos I'm watching have the format of two teachers asking each other basic questions ('Is this a fruit? Do you like to eat this?') with lots of repetition, hand gestures, and doodles to illustrate.

I feel like I've been learning so much but all I can quantify is the hours spent since it's not like I'm making vocab lists or taking tests, I'm just absorbing like a sponge. My favorite part is that it's pretty chill to be a sponge so it's still possible when I'm tired, and until this past week or so I was struggling a lot with my energy levels. I don't really have any fun language facts to share other than that sky blue is its own distinct color category, there's no overall blue in Thai.

Spanish: I'm actually part of an insanely multilingual friend group now and there are a lot of Spanish speakers. This includes the friend I've been calling 'Kdrama Friend' who is actually a Spaniard, although her mother tongue is Catalan, not Castilian. Then there's my Guatemalan neighbor of the Mysterious Doormat Beverage (left on my doormat, not consisting of doormats), and a few other women. Kdrama Friend can translate (and so can some of the others, they mostly speak more English than I speak Spanish) but it's a lot less awkward when she doesn't have to. I do struggle to follow group conversations a lot of times though, so I've been meaning to seriously work on my conversational skills and now I've actually started.

It's easier than with Thai in the sense that I don't have to have visual input, I can understand intermediate to advanced podcasts like the Duolingo podcast and even native podcasts, but it's harder in the sense that I don't feel any progress since my level was already pretty high and I'm just picking up the occasional new word. We'll see how I do at tomorrow's baby shower. To be honest I think a lot of my problems with conversation are more psychological than linguistic and exist even when I'm speaking English, I can just cope better then.

I found a podcast on fashion history which I was able to follow because I'm actually really interested in that. It's the whole comprehensible input thing, I know perfectly well what a toile is and have used them, but someone at my Spanish level who didn't know how to sew clothes might have been lost.

Working on Spanish doesn't feel that exciting but it's useful and important to me for heritage reasons. If you've ever read the Josefina American Girl books, that's exactly one side of my family and my grandma grew up speaking Spanish, but my dad's Spanish is almost nonexistent and I just learned in school.

Vietnamese: You all know I love this language and I've wanted to learn it for a while, but there aren't great resources for it and while I can absolutely pick up certain words and phrases, it still kind of...doesn't sound like a language a lot of the time. Thai already feels more understandable. I think the alphabet similarity is actually hurting me because if I look at a word the way it would sound with English pronunciation interferes too much, and there aren't any videos simple enough to feel comprehensible without any translation. So this is on the back burner.

Korean: Dropped for now, although I did find some comprehensible input videos in case I decide to try learning it later.

My problem is that I now want to learn all the languages, right now, and that is not how it works. Anyway, feel free to ask me about languages any time.

Learn the language of a lost civilization.

Atlanteans have their own language—very different from the languages of the surface world. Use this handy guide to read and chat like an Atlantean!

Atlanteans communicate by telepathy (that means they can read each others' minds). They don't spend too much time chatting. But they do have their own language. A lot of modern languages come from the ancient Atlantean language. That's why you'll hear Atlanteans use sounds that are common to most of the world's languages, like "ah," "tuh" and "puh." But you wont hear sounds like "f" and "v," which are used mostly in English and a few other languages. The written Atlantean language doesn't recognize capital letters, and there's no punctuation. The alphabet consists of symbols for for the same 26 letters in our alphabet, plus symbols for "CH," "SH" and "TH." Atlanteans read from left to right, then right to left, then left to right—sort of zigzagging down the page. So you would read the first line left to right, then the second right to left, the third left to right and so on.

Notes:

Of course mostly this is used as a substitution cipher rather than a true language. You can see the letters for CH, SH, TH are literally those two letters. I used to think the spiral-shaped writing system in Artemis Fowl was ridiculous but directionality is actually much more arbitrary than you'd think, anything can work! Boustrophedon style (written in a zigzag) is comparatively mundane by comparison.

My Tav!!! :D

I thought I’d share how they look in-game, since drawing them can only do so much lol

If you want some additional info (+more how i see them) it’s under the cut lol

So, my Tav.

Their name is Zion, because they’re essentially a self insert and I’m very uncreative

They’re a sorcerer

They’re nonbinary (use they/them), aromantic (but still willing to be in a relationship when they find a person they feel comfy with), and asexual (sex positive tho)

(Let me explore my sexuality through fiction okay-)

They’re around 180 years old during the game’s events, which I’ve decided is more or less 25-30 human years

They’re a human-drow-dragonborn, but the human traces are very slight because their parents were pure dragonborn and a half-drow, but down a few generations of drow/drow relationships. Their most human parts are the slightly creamy colors to their cheeks and ears, as well as a small amount of almost-white hairs, mostly over their arms and legs

From more draconic features, they mainly have slitted pupils, like a cat, because it’s fun, and their teeth are sharper than average. Plus they have scales, other than on the face, on their biceps, and all over their chest area (no nipples lol). Plus sharper-than-usual nails :)

I’ve also decided they do have a draconic tail, despite that not being an option in in-game customization, because it’s my imagining of the world and I get to do what I want, I am the DM now >:3

On that note, big sucker for wings here, so… you know. They have “retractable” (part-magic) draconic wings. But, to make it less op, I’ve made it hurt like hell whenever they summon them, cause it’s essentially like speed-growing an additional body part with bone in it, then shedding it like a skinwalker on supernatural, so they don’t use that nearly at all, unless under really strong emotions, or under extreme circumstances. But, to make it more fun, their feet also turn draconic when they do that

(Ik people are probably gonna come at me for that one, but eh, I don’t really care. It’s my version of the world, after all. Besides, it doesn’t come up often so you can technically just ignore that)

They have the criminal background, and I don’t quite have their backstory fleshed out just yet, but I know they became a thief to survive after their family was killed due to debt (drow are brutal), then it became a sort of revenge thing, to steal from rich people and such

They got found out at one point, at around 150 years of age, and were hunted down, but escaped the town before they got caught and/or killed, which is pretty much like a banishment if you think about it lol

Since then they’ve just been living sorta on the run, stealing or foraging and hunting to survive, at first in the Underdark, then, later, on the surface

Twas on one of their heists for food the nautiloid got them

Now for some fun facts and other little things!

They actually dislike the sun, it makes their eyes hurt from how bright it is. Were very disappointed because everyone who’s seen it and been in the Underdark praised its beauty and shit, but when they saw it for the first time they were just like “I cannot see”

They still appreciate sunsets and sunrises though

They speak Common, Undercommon, Drowish, and know how to say a few basic phrases in Draconic/Glav (they can read the alphabet as well, just not out loud)

They’re very morally grey. Like, would sell your soul to a devil for a single corn chip with no remorse but would also immediately stand up to your abuser kind of morally grey

They can eat raw and rotten food without much consequence, because their draconic ancestry makes their stomach acid more… well, acidic, so it just melts all the bad stuff away. They don’t like rotten food tho, it tastes bad. Raw meat on the other hand…

Once they get attached to someone they will do anything for them

Despite Astarion’s lines being pretty much copy-pasted from a script, they find them endearing (until they learn about his past, then they want to hold him every time he falls back into that habit)

They have unreasonable amounts of charisma when they want (17), despite the fact they’re a total dumbass other times

Speaking of stats, STR is at 8, so they’re very lean

Their favorite animals are snakes, they just love the noodly babies

They make dirty jokes every chance they get (to the delight of Astarion and demise of literally everyone else)

They hate kids. Like, really. They let that tiefling child who stole the locket from that one guy get slapped lmao

Aside from the visible piercings, they have a belly button one as well
