about a third of the way through baru now but it's such slow going because the pacing is so... like things will happen in spurts, and then time will be skipped over without much description of what's happened in the meantime, then the new status quo will be in place but only illustrated in broad strokes - and when there are *scenes* instead of *passages* the scenes are mostly people expositing economics or politics to each other while thinking 'he knows that i know that he knows that i know...but we've both played our pieces already so it doesn't matter who knows...' so it winds up reading like a very slow chess game where the moves are telegraphed far enough in advance that you're not sure where, if anywhere, the genius move is

#it's hard to know if i like this book or not #i like the characters #i like the concept #i even like the plot #it's just the way it's all put together that makes it kind of boring #everybody knows what everybody else is doing so how is it possible that there's still supposedly intrigue everywhere? #unless there's a whole nother later underneath it .b ut if THAT's the case. then we're not getting enough glimpses at it #and now i realize i'm talking it through ad nauseum like the characters in this book #baru cormorant

I really tried with this ask, but after several frustrating concepts, all I have to offer is:

He is happy to be called pretty, but since I can't draw it to suit myself, I'm saying he doesn't know what jewelry is hehe.

I try to stay spoiler free so I dont know whats gonna happen in most of Idias chapter but I assume he’s going to be the one to overblot, which is fine because it’s a good formula and with all the storytelling points they have going on it’s best to keep it simple so that everyones satisfied and what not, but I would love to have Ortho overblot instead. 

Because, from what I understand, he’s a robotic imitation of Idias dead brother? And Idia is probably haunted by that in his own way.

But I keep thinking about the fact that your this robot made to copy a long dead person that your creator loved dearly, and thinking that your only existent was made around bringing him some sense of peace but somehow you still fail at the one thing you were created to do because that past still haunts him and your left knowing that you'll never be what he fully wanted you to be because that person is dead gone. And he probably looks at you and thinks about how you’re supposed to be taller or your voice is supposed to be deeper but that can never happen now because he only knows what he remembers and not what will never happen now. He keeps his distance from you and he can’t look you in the eye and you are programmed to care for him but you can’t help but feel this overwhelming something inside of you that twists oh so painfully whenever he sends you off with a curt order.

But then you overblot, but you're not supposed to because your a robot and robots shouldn't have these complex feelings and it goes against all your programming to look down at your creator and think about how it’s all his fault you’re like this and wouldn't it be nice just to remove him so you could be free, but you dont really know what freedom is and the thought of losing someone you love so dearly is tearing you apart but you’re not supposed to love your just supposed to obey. All the circuits and electricity through your body are not made for this and it’s overwhelming in the most beautiful of ways because you’re not supposed to but you DO and if there’s even the littlest bit of proof that you are more then you were created to be you feel like someone else. You feel like you could be SOMEONE.

And the dust settles- your overblot finished- and while everything might not be Ok, you think things may just get better as both you and Idia crying and singing apologies to one and other and promising for a better life.

Why is it normal to name your plants but not other household objects? Yes, I know, plants are alive, but still they mostly stand around ... I interact much more with my chairs and my spoons, so why not name them?
