So, my dad hasn't been able to find anything to read lately and me, being the good/weird daughter I am, told him he should read the Six of Crows duology. He agreed and, over the last couple of months, he's finished Six of Crows and is now like, 2/3rds of the way through Crooked Kingdom.
[Crooked Kingdom spoiler coming up for those who have yet/are in the midst of reading it]
Today, the very first thing he said to me was, "Good ol' Jesper. Trying to get his life on track and what does he do? Kisses the wrong goddamn Wylan!"
Like. Ya'll. This man is turning 68 this year and was legitimately pouting. Not only did I not think he would like the books this much, but I did not expect him to get this invested in a queer romance.

So...An anon encouraged me to try writing a drabble/one shot/whatever they're called of my main hobbit otp, which is Thorin x Bofur.
It's been literal years since I wrote any sort of fiction that isn't part of a multichapter fic, let alone something under 1k words. I had no prompt; I just wanted to try writing a bit of senseless fluff, so I'm not sure if I did too well with it 😂 Either way, I can say I contributed to the very few works out there for this pairing.
----------------
Just Right
Pairing: Bofur x Thorin
Rating: General
Summary: Thorin's had a long, irritating day, but things gets better once he's with his toymaker.
It was late.
Thorin wasn’t sure how late it was—it could be hard to tell when one was stuck in a council chamber that had no windows that faced the outside world—but the empty and silent hallways told him that it had to be close to midnight. The realization made a quiet and annoyed sigh leave his mouth; he had wanted to end the meeting hours ago, but there had been many important topics to discuss, such as trade with the clans in the east and the upcoming wedding of Kili and Tauriel.
It didn’t help that, the previous night, he had been kept awake by nightmares and he was left feeling exhausted and irritable. Not wanting to lash out at anyone, he had done his best to keep himself in check all day. But it had been a struggle. Having to force smiles and laughter when he found conversation to be less than funny, being patient and understanding when someone kept rambling away from the topics they had been discussing…
Shaking his head, he attempted to rid himself of thoughts of the day and the annoyance it had brought him. He told himself the meeting was over now and—at least until morning—he was free from having to endure any more political drivel. Until morning, his time was entirely his to spend as he pleased and all he wanted to do was cuddle up beside his lover and get some rest.
He was just a few yards from the door to the chambers he shared with his lover when he heard a voice behind him.
“I see you’re finally out o’ that meeting.” Turning around to face the owner of the voice, Thorin felt both relief and joy when he saw that it was Bofur. He was walking towards the king, his usual, friendly smile peeking out from beneath his mustache. “That’s got t’ be a new record for longest council meetin’ ever held.”
“It certainly felt like it. I could have sworn I was in that room for three days with how long it dragged on.” As Bofur came nearer, he opened his arms and beckoned him closer before wrapping him up in his embrace. “You’re up late,” he murmured, his eyes closing as he buried his face into the toymaker’s shoulder. He could already feel the stress of the day beginning to melt away; Bofur had always been able to make him feel relaxed, even after the most horrible of days.
“Couldn’t get t’ sleep, so I thought I’d take a little walk around the palace t’ try and tire myself out.” He combed his fingers through the ends of Thorin’s hair, a content sigh leaving his mouth.
“Did it work?”
“Not in the least.”
Thorin quietly laughed and drew back enough to look at his face. “Perhaps some tea will do the trick?”
He shook his head. “On my walk, I visited the kitchens. The hearths are completely empty o’ coals, so heatin’ anything is impossible. However…” A cheeky grin came to his lips as he reached inside his vest only to pull out a flask. He gave it a little shake, the liquid inside barely sloshing about due to how full it was. “I did happen t’ procure some o’ the king’s finest whiskey. A few nips o’ this and we’ll be knocked on our arses until noon tomorrow, I’m sure.”
This time, Thorin let out a hearty laugh and his brow rose. “After not sleeping last night, I would be more than happy to sleep until noon tomorrow,” he chuckled. Almost reluctantly, he pulled back entirely from Bofur only to take his hand and start to lead him towards the door to their chambers.
“You didn’t sleep last night?” Bofur asked, a small frown coming to his lips. “Did the council hold you hostage then, too?”
“Thank Mahal, no. It was just nightmares.” Opening the door, he stepped into the dark room. There was a single oil lamp burning on one of the bedside tables and, on one side of the bed, the blankets were all askew.
“Just nightmares?” Bofur asked with a frown as he used his foot to close the door. “Or was it actually a specific nightmare relatin’ t’ a certain day in our lives?” He watched Thorin’s shoulder slouch somewhat.
“The latter,” he admitted, releasing Bofur’s hand so he could remove his heavy, fur coat.
“Why didn’t you wake me?”
Thorin didn’t answer right away. Instead, he spent the next few minutes disrobing for bed. Just when Bofur thought he wouldn’t get an answer from him, though, he finally spoke. “I didn’t want to wake you. Not after I had already disturbed your sleep three times this week due to being kept late by business. I wasn’t going to let myself disturb you again.”
“Thorin.” Walking over to his king, he gently forced him to turn around and face him. Then, tilting his head forward, he pressed their foreheads together and brought a hand to rest on Thorin’s cheek. “I don’t care how many times you wake me in a night. You could wake me every hour o’ every night for the rest o’ our lives an’ I wouldn’t care so long as it meant that you wouldn’t have t’ stay up all by your lonesome.”
“I pray to Mahal it never gets to be that bad,” Thorin said with a soft laugh. He looked into Bofur’s eyes, finding them filled with nothing but warmth and affection for his lover.
He was sure those eyes could melt even the coldest of hearts.
“You’re too good to me sometimes, amrâlimê.”

My #1 post of 2022
I have an art idea! Thoughts on Hobbit!Baylee as Queen under the Mountain? Or telling Smaug that it's rude to steal kingdoms (and doing it so well he starts to second guess himself) because that mental image has never left my head.
Tumblr media
"You know...I had my doubts about Baylee potentially becoming our aunt, but now I think she's going to make a pretty good wife for Uncle."
"Given that she's currently telling off a dragon and making him rethink his life choices? Aye, I think she'll make a good wife for him."
Once I read that bit about Baylee telling off Smaug, I lost it giggling and knew I had to draw it xD The scale between her and Smaug is off, though--she should be half the size she is, but I honestly couldn't draw her any smaller than that without her looking like a small blob.

✨Sparkles✨ mean I'm currently hyperfixating on this topic at the moment and will have a higher chance of writing for this/these one('s)
While these are not all the fandoms I'm in, these are the ones I'm most comfortable with writing about
Some rules:
I may or may not write smut? I'm not sure since I haven't really done it, but I will NOT write smut for characters under the age of 21
I won't write anything that has to do with the reader being super OP or being half of like, literally everything
When it comes to Y/N being an anthropomorphic animal/human or half of that, if stuff like that is canon in the fandom, then I'll write it (like a half human half monster for Undertale, or a Cat person for TMNT) but if stuff like that just doesn't exist in that world, then I most likely won't write it
I won't write a character being a racist, rapist, homophobic, transphobic or anything like that, those things are fucked up and aren't ok and that character I may write, might be someone else's comfort character and I don't want to ruin a character for someone
I won't write a character as being an abuser, sure, I could say they where abused some way in the past if it is relevant to the fic, but I will not write a character being an abuser themselves, that's just not right
I won't write yandere characters, it just feels to toxic to me to have someone be THAT possessive of someone
If a character is canonically underage, I will not age them up, if a reader or character is being romantically shipped with the underage character, the reader/character must and will be underage as well
(Keep in mind I might add rules or change certain rules)
I can do:
LGBTQ+(THIS ABSOLUTELY INCLUDES ASEXUAL AND AROMANTIC)
Any gender for reader, if not specified, I shall do gender neutral
I will write angst and mental health related topics of asked
I will absolutely 100% write a character or reader with ADHD and other neurodiversities
I can do shipping fanfics! Although, it depends on the characters, but I may be able to write it, even if I don't entirely agree with the ship! AS LONG as it is not anything like AbuserXvictim or MinorXadult or anything like that.
As a writer, I hope that I may advance in my writing skills, as well as have fun with what I write, so, I ask as many requests as your heart's desire!
Remember, I have every right as a writer to deny a request if I'm not comfortable with writing it.
HAVE A GREAT DAY YOU BEAUTIFUL/HANDSOME BITCHES, BROS AND BO BURNHAM HOES! (See what I did there?)

I see stars
summary:
Imagine getting drunk at the feast of starlight , and becoming over happy, and dancing like the complete opposite to what elves are used to. Leasts just say Thranduil is more than impressed.
translations:
rukhs shirumund caragu=beardless orc dung
warnings:two boners
wordcount:2356
After the dwarves and you were taken prisoner,Thranduil had kept you with him once he sent Thorin to the cells for refusing his offer. Before he was even able to begin to talk to you the dwarves had escaped, theu had left a note which the guards handed to Thranduil ,who read it before passing it to you. His face was unreadable you didnt know what to expect,as the scrap paper was upon your hands. The rushed note had read:
"Our friend from strange lands,
your journey ends here, come vist us in erebor once it IS safe, not now,we  cannot afford to lose anymore family.
much love,
ps Thorin says if you get the chance near that rukhs shirumund caragu lowers, bite it off."
Your face lit up with embarrassment, knowing Thranduil had known what Thorin was implying for you to do,it was a good idea, but hiding a knife in your vagina and then chopping it off with that. That seemed like a better idea, what if you had his coxk in your mouth, and you bite it off and then you choke to death on it,it happened to dean winchester just with a sausage. You looked up to the king ,you was watching you intensely. "Thank you." you had spoke quietly, folding the note placing it in your front pocket of your jeans.
Yes you were still wearing your clothes from home, you had cleaned them last at a stream, but when you had first joined the company ,they had given you spar tunics , blankets and such. You had known them since you fell froma portal ,four feet from the ground infront of the company. They had grew to think very fondely of you ,and protected you from all danger. Now you felt very insecure with out them around ,especially when this king seemed very scary.
"what for?" Thranduil had questioned you circling ,your body ,you had crossed your arms and faced the floor. "for allowing me to have that note from my friends." he had stopped circling to look at you ,he liked you not like that at least not yet,you were being held captive yet you were treating him with kindness.
He hadnt kept you in a cell, infact he given you a room,it was locked at night and such incase you tried to kill him. In a few days you had warmed up to the king, but now erebor was reclaimed and he qould be going to reclaim his jems. You had practially begged him to take you with,so you could see your friends. He didnt like the idea, but then you started crying, you enjoyed the kings comapny when you would eat with him and such ,but you couldnt not go especially if you could prevent somes death. In the end he had agreed and sat you infront of him on his elk,you were excited to see your friends ,you just hoped Thranduil wouldnt kill them. You had been shy with Thranduil at first ,but you soon found out he was very nice, and you came out of your shell.
That led you to be literally bouncing on the elk once you had arrived infront of erebor  ,with Thranduil having to have his arm around your waist, which led you to be very close to each other.  He had to tell you to stop,as nice as he could, you hadnt realised you had caused the king a little problem.Which luckily his outfit hid,he didnt tell you that was why,he had just stated someobe might aim for him and then hit you with an arrow. Bouncing looked like yeah.  You had spotted Thorin whos gaze lingled on you ,he thought Thranduil was using you so they wouldnt try kill him.
However you smiled widely up at Thorin. " Thorin! Your crown looks very lovely on you!" you had shouted up at the king ,who sffered from dragon sickness, his mouth twitched slightly before turning back into a frown. "You are fooling around with an elf?and an elf thats him?" he had scoffed in disgust at you, your face fell. "no,thorin." you had been hurt at his words, thranduil had tighted his grip on you waist, protectively.
Once you had found out that Thorin and his best fighters had been led into a trapped ,you had forced Thranduil, totake you there and help save them. In which had surprisingly did,you also may have used your sons also heading there ,what if he gets hurt and you couldve saved him. You ended up jumping on azog's back ,legs around his waist stabbing him in the back with daggers,so thorin could go for the kill;you literally looked like drax. Now your life was complete ,you looked awesome, you had also saved fili and kili. Darn Fili deserves more screentime. Azog had flipped you over his shoulders ,slamming you into the ice, strangling you with one hand and blade in another sending a slice up your arm, You had just became loki ,being slammed by hulk, and now you needed stitches. "I...c-can...see..y-your cock." you had to try to speak, face red, unable to breathe.giving Thorin the chance to end his life.
Thorin pushed azogs body away from you, pulling you into his arms. "you are very much crazy ,y/n and for that I will be forever in debt to you as you saved my family and I" he spoke stroking your hair, as you gained your breath back, your neck was definitely was going to be bruised. "I ...r-repaid..my debt for keeping me safe in this strange world all those month, plus i got to see that majestic hair everyday." you reached your hand up,to his hair, running your fingers through it, "i am really sorry for saying what i did earlier, I do not want you getting hurt that was all." he spoke sincerely to you. "dont worry little man,no one has taken my innocence." you smirked in which Thorin smiled at you in relief  before carrying you bridal style to erebor to find oin, trying to avoid hurting your bleeding upper arm.
That was until Thranduil stopped him on his elk,his eyes wondering over your injured form, you smiled at the king. Thranduil knew he had to take you home with him,he had felt things he had never felt before ,even with his now dead wife. "let me take her back with me,to the woodland relm,we have the finest doctors." he had spoken sternly,Thorin had scoffed in response. "oin is the best in erebor!" he had growled,he didnt want you with an elf at all. "more like the only one." Thranduil had annoyed Thorin with this, his stomach bubbled with anger.  "Thorin, its fine I have to go back anyways ,I left belongings there." you tried to convince the dwarven king, however he was stubborn,so it would take more than that. "i will buy and have you made new belongings." he really didnt want you to go,he felt like it was his duty to protect you,he thought of you as a daughter almost.
"Thorin , I will come back, and if not straight away, I will write." you had jumped down from Thorins arms ,before hugging him tightly, and pulling away. Your eyes watered ,as you looked at back at Thorin who's did the same ,as Thranduil lifted you up onto his elk infront of him.
Also you forgot to mention,Tauriel fell off a cliff , rip. Legolas was going away for a while, but promised his father he would try to visit on the feast of starlight. Thranduil had comforted you saying Thorin was safe ,there wasnt any huge chances that something could happen to him while you were gone, you would be able to see him again. Anyways that was many months ago and you wrote to the dwarves and bilbo often,Thranduil would even get elves with drawing talents to draw you so you could send them back for Thorin and Bilbo. Bilbo had requested it. But tonight was the feast of starlight,Thranduil had you a dress made ,and fitted , it was mint green, come to think of it looked exactly like Arwen's dress in return of the time. Maybe you become friends with her tonight ,and gift it too her in the future as she loved it so much. wink wink. Thranduil had personally came to chambers, and walked with you to the feast. Yeah so you had been staying in the woodland relm way longer than you had thought you would have been staying.
Thrandul had sat on the end of the table ,while you sat at the side of the table next to him, there was many high elves at the table such as celeborn,Elrond,Lady Galadriel, and many others, you could barely remember any of there names. However there had been wine, you were barely an adult ,let they kept topping up your glass ,no one told you how strong elvish wine was. You were tipsy very quickly, you didnt make much conversation with anyone as you very nervous of saying something innappropriate. Soon as you all had entered the hall ,the music filled your ears it was quiet boring music. So you just lingled around Thranduil , drinking wine ,which was everywhere ,soon you were very loose  ,and very close to Thranduil. Basically jumping around him, that was until a slightlly up beat song started playing. "Thranduil I am going to go danceeeeee." you had spoke excitely ,gripping the kings arm he had simply nodded.
You had skipped off to the dance floor, letting out a "wooooooo" hitting your fist in the air,Thranduil watched you as you tucked a part of your dress into your short legging shorts,he had gasped at your action as your whole thigh was revealed. You began dancing like you were doing just dance to umbrella, singing the lyrics, pointing to Thranduil ,gesturing him to join he shook his head, you shrug at him. You had learnt this not only because of tom holland but as a child you loved just dance and memorized the movements.
"you have my heart
And we'll never be worlds apart
Maybe in magazines
But you'll still be my star
Baby, 'cause in the dark
You can't see shiny cars
And that's when you need me there
With you, I'll always share"
you had began,as the elves had changed the music to suit the music , you smirked at heart you had gestured to Thranduil, who's face was a beet,he couldnt deny he liked it.
Tumblr media
"When the sun shine, we shine together
Told you I'll be here forever
Said I'll always be your friend
Took an oath, I'ma stick it out to the end
Now that it's raining more than ever
Know that we'll still have each other
You can stand under my umbrella
You can stand under my umbrella, ella, ella, eh, eh, eh
Under my umbrella, ella, ella, eh, eh, eh
Under my umbrella, ella, ella, eh, eh, eh"
Tumblr media
you gestured under your dress before ,winking at Thranduil, before pulling the dress off swiftly, causing the elves to gasp ,leaving you in a tight black corset from Thorin and black shorts, you threw the dress at Arwen mouthing keep it.These fancy things
"Will never come in between
You're part of my entity
Here for infinity
When the war has took its part
When the world has dealt its cards
If the hand is hard
Together we'll mend your heart."
Tumblr media
You strut over Thorin ,high and might ,getting very close ,before turing and dropping your ass slightly grazes him ,before flicking a leg out then bring it back in and doing the same with the other. Before standing up quickly, facing him wipping the back of your hands down his face before going back the dance floor.
"When the sun shine, we shine together
Told you I'll be here forever
Said I'll always be your friend
Took an oath, I'ma stick it out to the end
Now that it's raining more than ever
Know that we'll still have each other
You can stand under my umbrella
You can stand under my umbrella, ella, ella, eh, eh, eh
Under my umbrella, ella, ella, eh, eh, eh
Under my umbrella, ella, ella, eh, eh, eh"
Tumblr media
Thranduil stares at you, licking his lips at your performance,he was deeply attracted to you there was no doubt about that. You skin glittering in the light as it reflected onto your sweat,
"It's rainin', rainin'
Ooh, baby, it's rainin', rainin'
Baby, come here to me
Come into me
It's rainin', rainin'
Ooh, baby, it's rainin', rainin'"
you finished off ,voice hurting slightly, before grabbing a glass of wine chugging it,bow at the elves that claped for you, smiled brightly, they hadnt seen anything like that ever. You didnt get to anything else before Thranduil practically run at you. You had revealed you love Thranduil ,in your song, He cupped your cheeks gently with his large hands before he pressed his soft lips against yours ,the elves around you clap  around you,as you both kiss passionately.
"will you marry me,y/n?" he spoke once you both pulled away, you nod eagarly before pressing your lips to his quickly, you bow once more before pulling out of the hall,he thanks everyone for coming as you walk out.
lets just say you dont bite his cock off,you went to visit Thorin with Thranduil the next day , they put aside their differences for you ,as Thranduil tells them about your stunt ,not about the boner he hid when you slut dropped infront of him.

An Exploration of Kiliel
OKAY, fandom thoughts on my art blog because of Story Study.
My Wife and I finally watched The Hobbit movies, so I’ve finally gotten to Kiliel (..... ❤ ) and I have some headcanons/thoughts about Tauriel’s introduction to the story, the flow of their romance, and what’s important.
(So this will be part meta, part headcanon as I sort that out.)
What’s striking me right away - other than the fact that I came into these movies ALREADY shipping them and am damn pleased about it, thanks Tumblr - is that we are given.... well, bupkis on Tauriel’s motivations and backstory. And the person I’m watching these movies with, who I love very much, was quick to point out that her introduction and immediate positioning as a Romantic Female Lead could read very shallow to the casual viewer.
(Which I am not, thank the Gods.)
So, what of Tauriel’s backstory and deeper life goals? Digging into the fandom, I found notes that her parents were killed by Orcs when she was young, and that Legolas took her under his wing afterward (making him her mentor, and thus making the idea of their romance even less attractive to me, since that means he would hold even MORE sway and authority over her and there would be very little equality for her there. Also, Gimli).
But that’s it. And we’re not given that in the main plot of the movie at all.
What we are given is the information that she’s conscious of the dangers to the outside world, and wants to protect her people by stopping those dangers at the source, despite contrary orders from her King.
So what I think the movie intended, with that scene where she talks to the Elvenking about her concerns and how she immediately chooses to go after the Dwarves later - motivated primarily by the thought of saving Kili - is that Tauriel has a deeper drive to help save the whole world from the threats she sees to it. Because of what happened to her parents, because she knows the spiders are coming from outside their borders, etc. The featurette “Tauriel: Daughter of the Forest” says of her “She has a great curiosity of other races, of the world outside - she literally hasn’t been anywhere...” (mentioned in part 2, part 1 is here). So, to me, her motivations for leaving Mirkwood include that - as well as saving this Dwarf she feels an inexplicably deep bond with already.
On that note, I wish they had gone a bit deeper into her and Kili's immediate connection than what we were shown. I do appreciate how she insisted on fending for herself, in their Battle Couple introduction, and how Kili immediately accepted her for who she is - the trousers joke was, admittedly, a little uncomfortable for me due to personal reasons, but I think it could be read as him meeting her aggression in battle with aggressive flirting, and in that light, her positive response to it (in what she said to Legolas, and in returning to check on him of her own volition) makes a lot more sense to me. And while I really enjoyed and understood the Feast of Starlight scene, those less romance-genre minded than myself may not have understood that as deep "enough” (for more of the intentions of the plot in that scene and the take the actors had on it, click here. Includes a hysterical Leoglas moment at the end!).
Rewatching it, I do see and recognize how deep their connection is and how meaningful what they choose to share of themselves is - especially with the idea of Kili honoring and respecting (nay, being attracted to) her ferocity, and the fact that most of her kin probably don't automatically respect her for such things. The sexism among the Elves is not as bad as it is with humans, but it is still there. Who knows how much Tauriel has had to fight for her place as the Captain of the Guard, being a woman. And again, it probably wasn’t as bad for her as it was for, say, Eowyn - but no matter how much space there is for women to step up and be active agents of the story in the mythology of the world, Tolkien didn’t choose to make women part of the action, actively, most of the time. So the world still reads as a mostly Men-at-War, Women-at-Home place. And that has to have had an impact on Tauriel’s life. And in addition to how charming Kili is, just as himself, the fact that he sees that part of her, respects her and admires her FOR it, must hold a lot of weight.
Another part of what I've seen, in re-immersing myself in the fandom now, has been this idea that both Kili's culture and Tauriel's culture have an idea of soulmates, the One person who, when you meet them, shakes you to your core, and you are never the same again. I really think that's what the writing was going for (see Evangeline Lily’s comments in part 2 of “Tauriel: Daughter of the Forest,” particularly), but it wasn't given the space and depth that it needed to be apparent on surface level of casual viewing.
So, from my fangirling perspective, I imagine that they both felt that right away, but were so surprised by it - because of the unexpectedness of their circumstances, and the animosity between their peoples- that they didn't know how to handle it, and fell into awkward humor, and slightly clumsy attempts to get to know each other as they tried to sort it out.
I imagine that Tauriel's outright denial of any connection to Legolas, and immediate acceptance of his father's racism toward her in that context, was also swayed by her newfound feelings. They (Tauriel and Kili) probably did talk more, as well, about their families and their deepest dreams after the Feast of Starlight scene cut off. We just aren’t given that information.
(Anyone else for a romantic adventure Kiliel-centric mini series?)
Then of course, we are given the healing scene. What I got from this, beyond their romance, was that Tauriel always looks to be helpful. When she takes the athelas from Bofur, she looks like she’s had a revelation. She realizes she can help, she can heal Kili, and that gives her an outlet of action for all the confusing feelings she’s having. She goes right into business mode about that - and Kili, all pained and fevered, barely realizes it’s her. But when he does, he looks at her in wonder (with a fever-dream angelic view of the magic around her, even! Sidenote - I LOVE how messy her hair was. Both beauty and realistic adventure life). And she looks back at him with such serious kindness, telling him to trust her, without words. Of course, he does....only to then believe that she wasn’t there at all, and spill his heart out to this apparition of the person he already knows he loves.
And in that, he is so sure that she’s beyond his reach, even though he knows he loves her already. Even though as he talks about how she’s on another level of existence than his, his action is still to reach for her hand, still reaching for her, despite the words he’s saying. He still wants to believe it is possible - that they are possible - even as he’s trying to accept that they can never be.
Which, of course, leads into the beach scene. After the whirlwind of surviving Smaug’s attack, too (extra shoutout to the writing there, regarding Tauriel and Bard’s children - she’s aware enough to realize that Bard’s son is the only one of the three of them that might have had any sliver of training for situations like this, because human misogyny, so she uses that to protect all of them - “Your sisters will die if we stay here,” etc. - but as soon as he runs off to help his father, she still makes the girls her priority, as well as the Dwarves. Headcanoning that if Kili had survived, and they married and moved into Erebor, she would have damn well taught those girls how to fight).
Anyway, back to the beach. I think my favorite part of that moment, other than the Heart Wrenching Perfection of what Kili says to her (and how it’s acted!), is that he has realized that she wasn’t a fever dream after all - that he did, in fact, say all those potentially embarrassing romantic feely-feels things right to her actual face - and instead of being embarrassed, he just GOES for it. He is that sure. Sure enough, that even when she can’t let herself reciprocate his feelings (even though she clearly does - and she doesn't say no, btw, she is interrupted by Legolas' arrival and thusly the reminder of her duty and her 'place') he then gives her the token from his mother, to let her know she’ll always be in his heart, no matter what she decides. And he almost doesn't, he almost leaves, but turns back in the last moment, in that desperate, loving attempt to try again. No matter how impossible it seems.
MY freaking heart.
Also, when Tauriel then learns of her banishment, she looks shaken at first - but quickly, almost relieved. See here, at about 39 seconds in. She has clearly been fighting against her own heart each moment since Kili came into her life - even though, as I mentioned before, he provides a grand excuse for her to go help other people beyond Mirkwood’s borders. And now, released from the obligations she has to her people, to her King, who doesn’t fully respect her anyway, she is free to do what she could not just moments ago. She is free to choose her own path - to follow her heart, and her ambitions to help the world.
Of course, she follows Legolas first - the path of least resistance being to follow her mentor and Prince. And I get from that that she’s shut herself off from her own emotions for so long - likely due to her parent’s death, early in her life - that she really doesn’t know what to do with herself, in that freedom, and in love. So, following her nearest authority figure, giving herself a moment to breathe and decide later, seems natural.
But, luckily, that path leads right back Erebor.
And unluckily, right into the tragic ending.
But first, she confronts the Elvenking (who has banished her, and therefore freed her, though that was not his intention) about his refusal to stay and help. His concern for his own people, again, will lead to them not being there to save the lives of others suffering in the world around them. And she’s not having that - in general, even if a large part of it is her love for Kili. The script focuses only on that love - with Thranduil refusing to accept that she really loves Kili, comparing what he imagines she feels to what he felt for his late wife, it seems - but there is so much in her whole narrative that has already pointed to her desire to help the whole world, even before she lets herself start feeling for Kili. And this moment plays right into that deeper motivation.
Of course, her story being a romance, finding and protecting Kili is her first priority. And sadly, that goes, as we know, badly.
It bothers me a LOT that she “had” to be damseled in the Big Fight. BUT. We at least get the strength of their connection before she gets trampled by Bolg (and the surety of her voice when she calls for him, and the focus that hearing her, and his calling back out to her, gives him - yes. It’s subtle, but its very strong and very there). And at least they get to see each other one last time - Kili knows, no matter what happens, she chose to come after him after all.
And all the emotion, in her watching him die, and him realizing what they’ve lost even though she did choose him.....ugh. My heart, again. They are both just so clearly broken - Tauriel so confused, not able to accept that its come to this, after she chose to find him, after everything. Kili so brokenhearted that after all his hoping - after she chose him back - they still can’t be together (not to mention the fact that he’s just lost his brother, too, the only other person we see him love as intensely as her). And then, in the last moments of (this part of) the fight, when Kili is gone and Tauriel is alone again, her pain is so great, her anger so clear, her love so deep, she is willing to use her own momentum and throw herself off the tower’s edge with Bolg, just to try and make for damn sure that he pays for what he’s done.
(I will forever maintain that the fact that that didn’t kill him - that SHE didn’t get to kill him - is a travesty. Especially with his murder of Kili, but also for the gross tongue thing. Very uncomfortable with what that implied.)
I’m gonna skip over the intervention of Legolas to save her life, cause that’s not important here, suffice to say that once again I am Pissed as Hell that they felt the need to damsel her so much. Sigh. I must assume, from a writing standpoint, that they chose to nerf her in this battle because she’s never been involved in war like this - fights to protect Mirkwood, yes, but not War Battle. HOWEVER, there are ways for them to have written through that and not made her look so weak. Especially considering that she is a seasoned warrior - AND had fought Orcs before, as we saw in “The Desolation of Smaug” - and between her and Kili, who one of Thorin’s strongest warriors, they should have at least been able to do better together. Crudmuffins! That, of course, would have messed with the outcome of the source material, but who of us would really be complaining? Hmm? (Sorry Tolkien.)
Their canon story ends, of course, with Tauriel having to come to terms with her feelings and Kili’s death all at once. As as much as I spent most of the movies harshing on Thranduil (except to honor how fabulous he is, stylistically and attitude-wise, and make as many Party Elk jokes as I could), i am glad they brought him back for this scene - not only that he gave Legolas a direction away from mooning over Tauriel, but that he got to help Tauriel accept what had happened (in his own blunt way). The way he watches her here, and looks at her, I feel like he’s really seeing her and accepting her as a person and not below him for the first time. I’m also headcanoning, since we know that Tauriel was orphaned and bonded with Legolas soon after (as her mentor - and honestly, I read their relationship as more of a broship/sibling situation), I feel like she was taken under the wing of his household - not because he approved, but because it was the Right Thing and probably looked good to his people, even if he couldn’t fully accept her due to her heritage. I also feel like the fact that she asks him to take the love away from her, since it hurts so much, also points to a more parental role than he would admit. If your heart was broken, who else would you ask to take those feelings from you - at that first heartbreak - than a parent?
But of course, he can’t - all he can do is finally admit, despite his earlier insistence otherwise, that her love for Kili IS real (I feel like he might have gone through something absolutely similar with his wife’s passing - finding her falling in battle, mourning over her body). And that smashes any hope she had that she could keep denying how she feels - it passes over her face, visibly and physically, that shock that he’s admitting it, then frustrated realization that if it’s real, she can’t deny her feelings anymore and can’t close her heart to it, and then just pure pain again as she realizes what she had and the full measure of what she’s lost.
And then she kisses him, as if she’s sealing that love and acceptance - the only time, super duper heart-stabbingly tragically, that she’ll ever get to you know, according to this version of the story.
I can only hope that afterward, Tauriel chose to honor herself and Kili’s memory by continuing to help the world at large, in her exile. And that she surprise and “oh shit”-ness of Thranduil’s expression upon realizing that an Elf could truly love a Dwarf means that he will be kinder to Legolas when he brings Gimli home.
Now, as far as the runestone goes, I initially wanted to believe that Tauriel would take it back after she gave it back to Kili in death, maybe to return it to his mother on a well-intentioned trip to meet her, to give them both closure. However, upon learning about what’s specifically written ON the stone, I have a different thought - Middle Earth News points out here that the runes on it translate to “Return to me.” Obviously, at its creation and initial giving, that was about Kili’s mother bidding her reckless son to come home safe. But when Kili gave the stone to Tauriel on the beach, he made it theirs as well. He bid Tauriel to return to him by giving it to her. And so now, in returning it to him upon his death, Tauriel bids Kili in turn to return to her, death be damned.
So while at first glance, that returning of the runestone may look like Tauriel denying her feelings again, its really a further, even more solid gesture of that acceptance. And honestly, to me, an expression of hope.
And I feel like hope is what really strikes me, about this ship. They have SO much potential, not only in how little we’ve been given of them in canon, but the potential they see in each other in those brief moments where they obviously imagine what their lives could be like, if they could be. One of my favorite shows says, early in its story, “Believing in even the possibility of a happy ending is a powerful thing.” And that is exactly what I see in them, and why they strike me as so wonderful. They are hope, and the belief in love despite all odds against them, despite all the darkness around them.
And no matter how shakily that might appear to be set up, that is gorgeous, at its heart and root.
And if you got this far in all my scattered ramblings, thank you!

the hobbit trilogy review since ive just watched all 3 in a row(ish)
every single one of those dwarves is my best friend i love them so much
what is the DEAL with tauriel and kili like that shit didnt even make sense. love at first sight and ONLY sight i guess bc they have like 3 whole conversations in the entire trilogy and none of them last more than 2 minutes it seems like. i feel like tauriel and kili could have been interesting characters but they were watered down to function ONLY as the franchise romance. it makes me think of mozarts magic flute and how pamina and tamino are literally the worlds most boring lead characters while papageno, the three ladies, the queen of the night AND EVEN SARASTRO are more interesting
i didnt understand why i had vague memories about bilbo/thorin until the last 30 minutes of five armies but that might also be bc i didnt want to see it because for some reason bilbo looks exactly like m*rt*n fr**m*n????
the anti aging cgi they used on returning lotr cast members was literally so funny to me
Concerning Hobbits can and will always make me cry as it turns out so good on howard shore i guess
relatedly; good score but less bc its memorable as its own work and more because of how they utilized major lotr themes in certain scenes.
thats sort of a lie the in film vocal pieces were great and i loved them
lee pace is the hottest sexiest man alive actually?
i think they really could've just made unexpected journey +MAYBE desolation of smaug and then forgotten 5 armies all together. it was kinda bad
the wilhelm scream. why did they use it. why did they use it AGAIN like. do all movies do this and lotr/hobbit trilogy is just more obvious or what. i lost my shit when i watched that goblin fall to his death in unexpected journey
i enjoyed this experience, but im also going to rewatch lotr because its better and if i choose to watch the hobbit ill probably stop at unexpected journey

I'd love to see your headcanons about Bilbo
1. Old Bilbo is absolutely the type who would troll the hell out of his neighbors. Or maybe even accidentally troll them without meaning to. Either way, Bilbo Baggins would confuse the hell out of everybody in the Shire. He’d make all these innocuous references to his adventures like, “Of course I can identify who built these weapons! Dear me, old Dwalin would have my head if I didn’t know by this point.” or “These smell worse than Smaug’s breath! Well, when he wasn’t trying to kill us all that is. For someone who talked so much, he certainly seemed unaware of his personal defects.”
Or even better, he would make shit up just to see their reactions. I would pay to see Bilbo bullshit Elrond by saying, “Did you know, when I was, er, strolling through Mirkwood’s kingdom, I saw with my own two eyes Thranduil singing about decapitated orc heads while kicking said decapitated orc heads in his halls? Skipping and prancing about it too. He’s gone mad I tell you, you should do something about that.” Revenge is sweet.
2. I have a little story in me where Bilbo once stole Gandalf’s wizard hat. He just wanted to try it on, honest, and his head ends up nearly swallowed by the thing. Gandalf is looming over him and demanding him to hand it over, causing Bilbo to panic and toss it to a startled Ori who also panics and shoves it to Nori and, well, that’s how he and the dwarves started to play a game of keep-away and it was one of the only times anyone’s seen Thorin laugh himself to tears. When it was Thorin’s turn to catch and throw it to Fili, he couldn’t see properly due to the tears and accidentally threw it in the stream nearby. Gandalf spent the entire day hatless in the heat to let the hat dry and he grumbled over his fate. He got sunburnt and nobody alive has ever seen Gandalf’s face go so red except when he was in Lady Galadriel’s presence. Dwalin guffaws every time someone brings up that story.
3. Bilbo is an odd mix of overprotective/free and wild parenting when it comes to Frodo. Like, there are odd times when he just loses it in certain situations, like Frodo being near holes or exploring caves with unstable walls that Bilbo has learned to identify from the dwarves. But other times, Bilbo teaches Frodo to stand his ground and fight back. “If that little bully pushes you or calls you names again, punch him in the face. Here, I’ll teach you how to punch properly, don’t want you to break your hand.” Or how to lie properly, because such a skill could save your life. Frodo never took on that lesson too well, but Bilbo tries his best to teach him to be. Bilbo lets Frodo make mistakes and while Bilbo is still fussy and polite, he wants Frodo to grow up whoever he wants to be. Someone strong yet retaining that innate kindness that’ll draw people in until it forms a fellowship.
4. Bilbo’s worst and best trait is his ability to feel deeply. Maybe it’s a hobbit thing or just a Bilbo thing, who knows. It’s what makes him such a fierce fighter because he fights for the people he loves and it’s what makes him the best friend you could have. Cause once he counts you as his friend, he’ll never let you fall. He singlehandedly almost dragged Thorin back from the brink of his madness in the Five Armies movie and that’s amazing. But it also means grief can literally kill him. Thorin, Fili, and Kili passing away almost made him lose it. He probably got himself really really drunk with elven wine after the battle, maybe contemplated jumping off the edge of where Thorin was going to throw him off during his madness. When Bilbo grieves, he can’t function. One of the members of the company, maybe Bofur or Oin or Ori would check up on him to make sure he’s okay. And the last time Bilbo felt such grief was when his parents died and he shut himself up from the world. But with the company with him, with Gandalf smoking his pipe and sitting side by side with him in tired silence in the aftermath of the battle, Bilbo feels he could move one step after the other a little easier than the last time he went through this. So when he leaves Erebor and the dwarves, he does it with the resolution to not waste his life. It doesn’t matter if the Shire doesn’t understand, because Bilbo knows there are people out there in the world who knows what he’s going through, whose been on an adventure that changed their lives for good.
5. What if Bilbo is too accomplished in languages? Like, he picks up on other races languages like a sponge. Others are always surprised by how he just, deduces what words mean what from their tones and context of the situation. Like, if Bilbo at one point during the journey, after listening to the dwarves talk in Khuzdul in quiet or from the commands and battle cries Thorin roars out, Bilbo is able to slowly pick up the nuances of the language. And the elves, well, he’s probably been studying the elven language and texts for years in his youth out of a fascination for the outside world. So he meets Elrond and when the dwarves aren’t looking, Bilbo asks a bunch of questions on pronunciation and certain elven stories he couldn’t understand. It’s a pleasant surprise for the elven king and the two start a lively conversation in elvish, Bilbo practicing and Elrond pleased with finding a new conversationalist. Like come on, the elf probably rarely talks to new people not of his race in his own language.
And then when Thranduil comes along, Bilbo reveals himself and tries frantically to convince the king to let the dwarves go with his silver tongue while speaking in elvish. Thranduil demands how Bilbo knows the language and Biblo just responds, “I’m friends with Lord Elrond.” and wow, if that isn’t incentive to not piss off an elvish king if they end up hurting or imprisoning this hobbit. Or alternatively, while escaping Thranduil’s hall’s, Bilbo gives them the middle finger and cusses out the elves in their language, causing them to gape after the escaping dwarves in outrage. Legolas almost loses his supernatural ability to never lose balance and nearly trips over a tree root while fighting and listening to this. Tauriel never lets him forget it and laughs herself to death when thinking about it later.
When they get to Erebor and Thorin loses himself to the madness, what actually snaps him out of it is Bilbo marching up to him and yelling at him in Khuzdul in front of the whole company, finally revealing his ability to speak it. The hobbit basically lectures the dwarf king for an entire hour and finally finishes off with, “Fuck you and if you don’t get your head on straight by paying the people of Dale what is their due and making sure Thranduil doesn’t fucking kill us all, I will personally yell out every embarrassing thing you’ve ever done on this journey, which is a lot by the way, to anyone I meet and it won’t matter who cause I can basically speak every language that counts in order to make sure that happens. So get your shit together, you git.”
Needless to say, Thorin’s gold sickness doesn’t stand a chance against an angry Bilbo Baggins.

Fanfic Authors Tag Game
Tagged by @maiikawriter aaaahhh 💕 ty bb! I’m so glad to hear from you again
AO3 name: Meztli (link tagged in the name)
Fandoms: actively it’s Dragon Ball. Occasionally Pokemon but it’s been a good minute. Formerly, The Hobbit (movie-verse)
Number of fics: 18, and of those body of works 3 of them are one-shot collections, plus all the other stories I’ve uploaded on Tumblr that I haven’t published on ao3 b/c I’m lazy
1. Fic I spent the most time on: Under Mountains and Beneath Stars, a Kiliel (Kili/Tauriel) fic. It’s only 4 chapters long and is unfinished but MAN did I have to do a lot of Tolkien lore research and world-type of building. And rewatch the movies. Also a lot of editing.
2. Fic I spent the least time on: Probably the ficlets I wrote for Tiencha (Tien/Yamcha) Week 2020.
3. Longest fic: The one with more chapters is Just a Prisoner of Your Eyes, a Launchitz (Launch/Raditz) fic I’m still working on. The one with the most word count is Under Mountains and Beneath Stars
4. Shortest fic: On my ao3 account it lists The Day After Last Night, a fic I wrote for GoChi Week 2020, as having the smallest word count. But technically it’s “Warmth” a BraPan vignette that’s under the collection Bits and Bobs (Son Family-centered collection)
5. Most hits: Bits and Bobs
6. Most kudos: Bits and Bobs.
7. Most comment threads: Bits and Bobs, I think, but Under Mountains and Beneath Stars comes pretty darn close.
8. Favourite fic I wrote: Um. It’s hard to say. Maybe it’s Just a Prisoner of Your Eyes because it’s the one I’m having the most fun writing and have inspiration to write for. I’ve also gotten some fanart for it  and have met wonderful people because of it, so that’s super encouraging.
9. Fic you want to rewrite/expand on: I would love to finish Under Mountains and Beneath Stars, since out of all of them it may be the best written and thought-out one, but I just don’t have the same passion for that pair and fandom as I used to 😭💔. Plus it was hard to keep up with both Tolkien and movie lore. Considering expanding one of the GoChi Week prompt fics titled On Second Thought as a multi-chapter fic instead of a one-shot. It’s a Saiyan Chi-Chi and human Goku AU.
10. Share a bit of a WIP or a story idea you’re planning on: An excerpt from the latest (published) chapter of Just a Prisoner of Your Eyes, a Launchitz fic:
He used to take the sight of the open night sky for granted. In the cities he grew up in, the stars were hardly visible, their shine diluted by the artificial glow of the street lights. Even so, he shouldn't have taken all the freedoms he had for granted. The freedom to look at the outdoors whenever he wanted.  The freedom to sing at the top of his lungs. The freedom to touch another person in privacy, with nature as the only witness.
Launch pokes him on a rib, her nose nearly touching his as they both turn to look at each other.
"So how are things going for ya at the Son house?"
Raditz doesn’t like this shift in conversation, mainly because he’s not sure how to answer it.
It's a strange feeling to be living among an already established family, like being an onion in a bowl of apples.
"Uh, fine, I think. I'm still not sure how I fit into the family. It's like living with strangers, who you know are technically your family, but it doesn't quite feel like it yet. I like the kid, though. We’ve been kind of hanging out these last few days. Even went fishing with him yesterday when his old man couldn’t."
This was super fun and I did have to do a bit of thinking and digging. Idk even know who’s still active on this hellsite anymore. I’ll tag @katerayearth @elisajdb @zdbztumble @arofili  and literally anyone else who sees this b/c I honestly don’t know who’s still on here and maiika already tagged the other authors I know.

Tari’s Top Twenty OTPs - #12
OTP: Kili/Tauriel
Fandom: The Hobbit film trilogy
Kili: Kili is perhaps the youngest dwarf in the Company, brash and foolhardy and a little bit ignorant of the dangers of the world.  He and his brother Fili are heirs to Thorin and the throne of the lost Erebor, princes without a kingdom, and both have had to grow up a bit on their journey.  As the second-born, there is not as much pressure and weight on Kili’s shoulders as there is on Fili’s.  He’s allowed to be a little cheekier, a little more coddled and less responsible.  But he’s dreamed of seeing his people’s ancient homeland all his life, and desires to become the kind of man he perceives Thorin to be: noble, battle-hardened, a great proud warrior and hero.
Tauriel: At the young age of six hundred, Tauriel is already an accomplished warrior and holds the noble position of captain of the guard of the elven kingdom of Mirkwood, having been taken in by King Thranduil after her parents were murdered by orcs.  Tauriel has no love for any manner of foul creature and can be utterly ruthless in pursuing and taking vengeance upon the evils that are taking hold in the wood.  She has a strong sense of justice and moral duty, which sometimes puts her at odds with her king, whose isolationist polices frustrate Tauriel, and she is not afraid to criticize and question him.  Tauriel also has an inquisitive, gentler side.  She’s interested in and cares about things beyond the borders of Mirkwood, and is curious to learn about other peoples and cultures.  Above all, Tauriel is compelled to do what she feels is right, even if that means rebelling against her king.
Together: Though members of opposing races that typically mistrust, despise, and even outright hate each other, Kili and Tauriel are largely free of the typical prejudices that come between their peoples.  The racism of their forefathers is not yet ingrained into them and so they’re much more curious and intrigued by each other.  They can sit down and have polite conversations and swap stories about their travels and cultures and just generally find each other interesting.  Kili is the more besotted of the two, and a bit awkward about expressing it, also seeming to realize how impossible her returning his affections should be.  Tauriel is mostly confused, amused, and even possibly a little bit mildly flattered by his admiration, though it becomes clear later on that she’s also come to care quite strongly about the dwarf and his well-being, in some fashion.  They fall quickly, and hard.  Theirs is an innocent, fledgling sort of relationship, not quite fully considered and only in the beginning stages of its story.  It remains nothing but a sweet possibility in the end, as their relationship is cut short by the tragedies of war before they can fully realize what they mean to each other.
How I Got Into The Fandom: Being a movie-birthed fan of The Lord of the Rings I just sort of… inherited the Hobbit films as a fandom really.  I wasn’t chomping at the bit for the movies to happen but when they finally did you can bet I was right there flailing and fangirling and being super excited for them with the rest.
When I Started Shipping Them: Honestly I was kind of doomed to ship them from the start.  I’d heard the rumors about their little romantic plotline before the second film came out and, being that Kili sounded like he was going to be an absolutely precious dork about her and that I completely adore that kind of thing, I supported the ship’s existence almost by default.  Collected little bits of fanart here and there.  Nothing big.  And then I went and got to see Desolation of Smaug.  And Kili was absolutely precious about her, just staring at her in awe from the moment he laid eyes on her.  And as the movie progressed and Kili and Tauriel interacted they hit more and more of my favorite shippy tropes.  I was majorly into them even before the halfway mark and by the end of the film, with their last scene… well, suffice to say they pretty much had me completely.  The next evening was spent gleefully diving into the fandom with vigorous abandon.
Why I Love Them: I am super into guys being super into their lady loves and just completely adoring them and admiring them and thinking they’re awesome and not being emasculated by their badassery.  Kili and Tauriel have this adorable kind of Gender Role Reversal to their relationship: Tauriel is the stoic badass that swoops in to the rescue and Kili is the damsel in distress who just has stars in his eyes every time he sees her.  (The height difference helps cement that.)  Add in a healthy dose of culture clash, angst from the fact that they are Star Crossed Lovers from feuding races, and the tragic separation and end to their budding romance, and you have one super-heartwarming narratively doomed ship that will just completely break your heart.  Hurts so good though.
Three Favorite Moments:
1. “She walks in starlight in another world...”
Ngh, I could watch this scene forever.  The lead-up to this moment is awesome too, with Tauriel choosing to stay behind and heal Kili’s poisoned wound and Kili literally seeing Tauriel in sparklevision.  (Well, okay, not quite literally, there is a canon explanation that elves’ true forms are very shiny and full of light and those on the edge of death can see it.)
Once things have calmed and Kili is out of danger, he lays on the table semi-delirious and then, unexpectedly, calls Tauriel’s name.
Surprised, Tauriel just smiles and tells him to rest.  Kili, still not quite conscious, assumes he must be having a dream, and whispers reverently about how the real Tauriel is far, far away from him, walking in starlight.  He reaches for her hand, brushing her fingers with his, and wonders aloud if she could have ever loved him.
Tauriel’s expression pinches with emotion before we cut away.
2. “If this is love, I do not want it.”
After the Battle of the Five Armies is over, Thranduil comes upon Tauriel, kneeling by the dead Kili’s side and mourning him.
“They want to bury him,” she says miserably.
The contempt Thranduil held for Tauriel’s feelings is gone, and he can only feel pity for her now.  Pity as she begs him to take this emotion from her, cries out that she doesn’t understand why it hurts so much.
“Because it was real,” he tells her gently.
Numb, Tauriel lets her tears fall, leans down and kisses Kili goodbye, sliding the runestone he gave her back into his hands and weeping softly.
3. Saving him at the river
Kili, impulsive action-taker that he is, has taken an arrow to his thigh in his reckless attempt to open the sluice gate and allow the company to escape.
He collapses, and the orcs begin to descend on him.  But all of a sudden an arrow flies in from offscreen, killing the nearest attacker.
Kili’s head whips around and he stares in awe and wonder as Tauriel charges in, accompanied by a dramatic swell of her theme.  A worried expression on her face, she engages the orcs, slicing through them, only once distracted by Kili’s cry of pain.

For a split second, Thorin was able to see a playful grin on his lips, but it quickly disappeared as Bofur kissed him. “No, I think I’m just right for you, badgûnê,” he murmured against the king’s lips.

Unbearable (Kili x reader)
Tumblr media
Word count: 2022
Warnings: death of reader, a lot of crying. This is also my first fic I wrote in english, so don’t be too hard on any (possible) grammar mistakes. The next ones are going to be more cheerful, I promise (づ。◕‿‿◕。)づ .
Author’s request: Enjoy! (✪㉨✪) and send me some requests, if you want.
~*~
It didn’t take you long to analyze the situation in front of you and you closed your eyes one last time to mentally prepare yourself, before you started runnning.
The second you took a glance of the situation happening a couple of metres in front of you, you somehow knew how all of this was going to end.
While you were running, a smile actually started to creep up your face, despite of all what was surely coming next. Because now, you were going to become useful, for once at least.
Since the day you joined the companion of Thorin Oakenshield, every single dwarf and even Bilbo with his courage, seemed to outshine you. Everything you did was average through and through. Your skill in archery, your sword fight, your stamina and hell, even your cooking was unremarkable and it had made you sick since day one.
You had volunteered to accompany the king, because just like every other dwarf you wanted to win back your mother land at all costs, but what you weren’t planning, was falling in love with one of your companions.
Yes, you admitted it, especially now for that it didn’t quite matter anymore, anyways. You had hopelessly fallen in love with Kili and his bravery, his strength and his sometimes childish sense of humour.
Your love was never returned, though.
Kili just didn’t seem to be able to look at you the way he was looking at Tauriel, a beautiful elf-maiden who was, and you hated to admit that, not nearly as unlikable and awful as you’d liked her to be. So you didn’t have any other choice than silently watching Kili confessing his love to her and feeling your heart aching and crumbling in return.
Nobody seemed to notice your love, but this was a circumstance you were highly glad about.
You were always one to endure your pain alone without bothering anyone with it.
So you loved and suffered alone and it didn’t take long until the only thing you wanted was for this journey to end, so that you could gain some distance between yourself and Kili and you started to hope, that maybe your love would fade when you wouldn’t have to see him and his gleaming eyes every day anymore.
You had tried to avoid him as much as possible, but Kili, as friendly and open minded as he was, had often started conversations with you and you couldn’t help yourself but fall in love with him even more everytime.
Sometimes, there’d even been moments, when you’d found something in his eyes, that’d made you believe for a second, that you’re feelings maybe weren’t just one-sided, but soon after that Tauriel was either seen or mentioned, and then his admiration for her was clearly recognizable and there was no need to only suspect it.
You always came to the conclusion, that that glimpse in his eyes that you’d thought you’d seen had only been wishful thinking and a clear sign of you desperation.
You increased your speed, you ran faster than you ever did before with your target right in front of your eyes. The pale ork didn’t seem to notice you as you raised your hand while running,  he was too focused on the dwarf he was going to kill in any second. At least he’d try, because you wouldn’t allow it.
When you reached them, you let something out that sounded like a weird war howling and stabbed him in the head, as well as you could, with the jagged stone you recently had picked up. Unfortunately, you didn’t manage to pierce his head or cause any serious damage, but it was enough for him to release the one you wanted to safe from his grip. Kili.
The dwarf fell down with a thud and you quickly shielded him with your body as you went to stand in front of him, facing the ork.
You had accomplished to reach them before Bolg could seriously wound Kili and that was all you had aimed for.
But now you had to handle the other problem: to defeat the ork. Unluckily, you were unarmed, because at the moment you had seen the seriousness of Kili’s situation, there hadn’t been enough time for you to look for any other weapon than the stone you had quickly grabbed from the ground.
However, let’s be honest, even if you somehow could’ve been able to find a sword or something like that, the probability of you winning against the spawn of Azog was rather low.
Still, you didn’t regret coming for Kilis help a bit. Hell, there was no way you could’ve stopped yourself.
It didn’t take long for Bolg to recover from your pathetic and desperate attack, and he turned to you, growling out of anger.
And as you kept eye contact with the huge ork, never avoiding his gaze, you strangely didn’t feel an ounce of fear.  You knew you were going to die, there was no escape, so there wasn’t anything else left to do for you, then to… let go. To let go of life and welcome death.
So you banished your all of your fear and you still weren’t afraid, when he raised his sword and stabbed it right through your chest.
Every ounce of air was seemed to be taken from you, as he slid the blade out again and the ground you then fell on, felt oddly soft and secure. You gasped.
Somewhere you heard a scream filled with unbearable heartbreaking pain, and this persons sorrow, somehow, felt so much like your own and hit you so hard, that tears started to form in your eyes.
You wanted to help this person, but your whole body had went numb and you could feel neither your arms, or legs, or any other part of it.
From the corner of your eye, you caught a glimpse of what seemed like red fire and suddenly, Bolgs head fell right from his shoulders. You didn’t care though, you had done what you wanted.
You turned your attention away from him, as you recognized tiny rain drops falling on your face and as you wondered when it had started to rain, you then realized, that there was no raining and the rain drops in fact had been tears.
You slowly turned your head and finally noticed Kili, who had pulled you to his lap, his arms wrapped around your body, while you were pressed to his chest.
How could you not have noticed this? Suddenly you felt the absurd need to laugh. Wasn’t it sad, that the first time he held you in his arms, you couldn’t even feel them? Couldn’t feel the warmth they send to you body?
You saw the tears that fell from his eyes and felt your heart cringe at this sight. Interesting, how physically you weren’t aware of your body, but your heart could still feel every emotion and seemed not to be damaged.
„K-Kili…“, you croaked, causing a cough attack you tried to surpress.
„I am here, (Y/N).“ By Valar, his voice was, although it was full of sadness and pain, still the most beautiful sound you had ever heard. Maybe in another life, you would have been allowed to get sung to sleep by and wake up to it every day.
Oh, how you wished for this heaven to become true, but you couldn’t imagine that Valor would grant you this. Still, even the thought of it gave you a warm and peaceful feeling.
„Stop crying, … p-please.“ Tears, that now belonged to your own eyes, started to run down your cheeks. „I’m very glad that after all, I could con-contribute something good to our journey“, you had a hard time trying to spit out the words you needed to say and you could literally feel your life floating away more and more.
Kili stared at you with a mixture of shock and ache „Why do you say something like that, (Y/N)? How could you…“
„No Kili, lis…ten to me“, you interrupted, your voice getting weaker and weaker. You knew that you hadn’t much time left. „Before I g-go, I want you to know that I am very hap..py right now for that I was a-able to safe you. You’re going to be a gr…eat king and the dwarves will need … you,“, you coughed, but forced yourself to keep talking. „s-so please p-romise me some…thing.“
Kili gently cupped your cheek with his hand, as he wished his and your tears away with his thumb, his eyes never leaving yours „Anything.“
„Don’t change… ever…“ This were your last words, for that your view went black after them and didn’t ever light up again, at least not in this world.
„(Y/N)?“, Kili stroke your (H/C) hair. „(Y/N), please, you have to wake up.“
His vision went blurry again and he pulled you tighter to himself, silently sobbing into your neck.
Why did this world had to be so cruel? At first he had lost his brother, his second half and now you, a companion he had learned to like and value. You had been so young and… precious. Far too precious for this cruel world.
But still, the pain he was feeling about your loss was way too… strong. It was as if he had lost another family member but nevertheless slightly different.
During the time you had appeared to throw yourself in front of Bolg, it came to him, that he hadn’t once given a thought to Tauriel, who had still to be anywhere here too.
After he had seen her kill Bolg, he hadn’t looked for her again.
At the beginning, where Tauriel was fighting against Bolg and was nearly killed, he had thought that if she’d die, he’d die right along with her, but now, as Kili was breathing in your pure scent and hugging your lifeless body, he realized, this wasn’t normal grieve as well. Maybe it should have been you, that he should have protected with his life. He let go of a scream, a scream full of sorrow and loss and he didn’t care who was watching or listening.
How could he have been so blind? He had been blinded by Tauriels silky skin and her elvish grace, so that he hadn’t been able recognize the one, who had been by his side all the time. You.
                                                        ~Time skip ~
Its been a few days since the war was over, but Kili didn’t really care how many.
He had heard that except of you and Fili, every dwarf of the companion had survived. Legolas and Thorin had killed Azog together and after the leader of the orks was dead, it didn’t take the others long to defeat the remaining orks who hadn’t had escaped.
Coming back to the prince, since you and his brother died, Kili wasn’t doing well. To be completly honest, he was miserable and he wished, that he would have died alongside with you. Of course he hadn’t forgotten the promise he gave to you, but he had to give himself a few days to grieve about the deaths of his brother and you.
When they had taken your body away from him to set everything ready for your burial, he hadn’t been able to look Tauriel in the eyes. But instead of cursing and screaming at him, like he would have deserved, she had simply taken his hands in hers, kissed them softly and had said: „I understand.“
After that she had left him and the forest elves and was never seen again.
He felt bad about how he had treated her, just as he felt bad about and regretted a lot of other things and he desired for everything to have been turned out different, but this was a hopeless wish and there was nothing he could do about it.
When Thorin would perish one day, Kili was next in line to become the king and for that he would prepare himself. He had to fulfill a very important promise, at least.

MINI RANT!!
Alright! So I love Lord of the Rings, i do, really, such a majestic work of art this series. Books, movies, fanfics, (oh god the FANFICS) i love 'em all. But here's the thing...QUIT PULLING CHARACTERS OUT OF YOUR ASS, HOLLYWOOD! Tauriel was a well written character...that literally should not have existed. Her only purpose in those movies was to cause romantic tension between Kili and Legolas. (Who we all know is gay AF for Gimli, like y'all c'mon.) and yes, she saved Kili from a poisoned Orc arrow, BUT THAT WHOLE SITUATION WASN'T IN THE DAMN BOOK EITHER! Like....dudes, did you even read the book? You guys had some badass dwarves and a Hobbit marching through hell and high water to save their homeland, battling goblins, trolls, elves, and literally EVERY OTHER RACE THIS DAMNED BOOK WORLD HAS TO OFFER with sass and steel and majesty, and you had to ruin it with some sappy love story? Also, if you aren't going to kill Tauriel off, then at least ship her with a dwarf that fucking lives, what a happened to her and Kili was RUDE. And after Tauriel states that kili is "Tall for a dwarf", Legolas's comment is just. "Taller than most, but no less ugly."....bro....you are 1000+ years old, ain't you a little old for name calling? They had such a perfect story going in Unexpected Journey, and suddenly there' this red headed she-elf with a thing for short guys with beards. Keep you sappy rom com bullshit away from my dwarf-filled mountain, Hollywood.

2016 writing review (fic)
Because @thatonezombiecosplayer and @thebyrchentwigges and @lurkinghistoric and all the other cool kids are doing these...
My AO3: glasscannon
Total Number of Stories Completed: By ‘completed’ I’m counting everything I posted to AO3 in 2016, not just things tagged ‘complete’. Six new stories posted to AO3 in 2016.
Total Word Count: 46,239 (including many many words co-written with @jezunya)
Fandoms Written In: The Hobbit, Poldark, Once Upon A Time, Max Max (in order of word-count)
Looking Back, Did You Expect To Write More Fic Than You Thought You Would This Year, Less, Or About What You’d Expected? I always hope to write more than I end up writing, but 2016 was actually fairly prolific by my standards. I made less progress on the big co-writing behemoth Truth Universally Acknowledged than I’d hoped, but posted quite a few more one-shots than I had any intention of writing. I even managed to complete a couple from concept to posting in a single day, which is fairly huge for how slow of a writer I am.
What’s Your Own Favorite Story Of The Year? You would ask me to choose between my own children like this? Who does that??
Honestly I’m fairly thrilled with everything I wrote/co-wrote in 2016, but in terms of sheer re-readability, chapter 3 of TUA, Asheed, is probably my favorite. TUA is a Hobbit/Pride&Prejudice fusion set in Middle Earth with a lot of additional world building. That chapter is the P&P equivalent of the Meryton Ball where everyone meets for the first time, and covers the Hobbitish festival of Ashseed, based on real-world Beltane festivities. There were a lot of moving pieces, but I think we pulled it off, and I still get a kick out of re-reading it.
Did You Take Any Writing Risks This Year? Writing and posting what amounts to, for me, flash fiction, was a really big jump. 2016 was the first time I ever woke up one day with no intention of writing, had an idea around 10am, had it mostly pieced together by 2pm, then finished and beta’d and posted by 8pm. Even just for canon-compliant one-shots, that’s quite the stretch for me, but utterly worth doing.
Do You Have Any Fanfic Or Profic Goals For The New Year? I want to add chapters to my unfinished stories, particularly TUA. I might try writing a series this year, individual parts marked complete rather than chapters, sketchier narrative arc. I’ve challenged myself to make progress on one creative project every single day of 2017, writing or otherwise.
Best Story Of The Year? I think TUA certainly got the most attention of any of my writing in 2016, but in terms of my best writing, it has to be The World Is Falling Around You. I started work on that one prior to 2016, and only managed to post the first chapter last year (second chapter is well underway, mostly just needs an ending), but the goal from the beginning was to focus mostly on the language. Whenever I feel like I can’t put words together coherently, I go back and re-read TWIFAY to remind myself that sometimes I can.
Most Popular Story Of The Year? TUA, by far. I’d forgotten what it was like to write in a large, ravenous fandom, lmao.
Story of Mine Most Under-appreciated By The Universe, IMO: The World Is Falling Around You, always. It’s utterly off-beat from the fandom currently, but I do so love it.
Most Fun Story To Write: Tie between Sanguine And The Wastelander and Wedded To His Work, for completely different reasons. The former because I used it as an exercise to develop my persona for Wasteland Weekend, and the latter because Ross Poldark’s troll-face is so very fun to write.
Story With The Single Sexiest Moment: Ha, I write nothing like sex. I wrote a snogging scene in 2011 and I still haven’t recovered. A Year In Bath at least mentions kissing, and implies slightly more.
Most Sweet Story: Chapter 4 of TUA, Peace And Quiet And Good Tilled Earth, which is all told from the point of view of Tauriel, our Jane Bennet. The chapter is a tour of Hobbiton and the surrounding area, showing the visiting dwarven dignitaries around and hitting all of Bilbo’s favorite places to eat. Tauriel is infatuated with Kili without really knowing it yet, so there’s a lot of sweet awkwardness (handflex!) and smiling and eye contact and cultural exchange. It’s not quite rot-your-teeth-out cute, but it might be as close as I get.
“Holy Crap, That’s Wrong, Even For You!” Story: I... wrote shockingly little angst in 2016? Usually that’s what that phrase is in reference to, but I managed to use my superpower of finding the bruise and pushing on it very little in my 2016 writing. Familiar And Unchanging is probably the closest, but to be honest that’s very light angst for me.
Story That Shifted My Own Perceptions Of The Characters: TUA definitely changed my perceptions of all the characters from The Hobbit. I mostly knew which dwarf was which before we started in on this, and now I can give you family histories to three generations back for all of them, lol. And now I understand what makes Lobelia Sackville-Baggins such a bitch and that’s not something I ever thought I’d say!
Most Unintentionally Telling Story: Sanguine And The Wastelander, of course. Though maybe that’s more intentionally telling than not, lol. I was working on my persona for Wasteland Weekend, for who I would be in a post-movie, post-revolution Citadel, and there was a self-insert fic week event happening, so I made some prose happen. There’s quite a lot of me in that fic, and I learned that Jack’s voice is incredibly difficult for me to write, but @jezunya‘s is very easy.
Hardest Story To Write: TUA, always TUA. The Hobbit has never been one of my main fandoms, Kili/Tauriel was a ship that flared and dimmed for me. This story has always been about the world-building and the co-writing project with @jezunya. When it comes time to actually put prose to page, it often takes a monumental effort to get these characters talking to me again.
Biggest Disappointment: That we didn’t make more progress on TUA, and that I didn’t finish second chapters for TWIFAY and Sanguine And The Wastelander.
Biggest Surprise: The three stories I wrote for the Dwight/Caroline ship in Poldark. While watching Poldark s2 I got bit by the ship bug hard, but there was basically no fic for them -- literally six total, I think, on AO3, before someone organized a fic-week around the pairing. I wrote and posted all three stories, A Year In Bath, Familiar And Unchanging, and Wedded To His Work, in the course of four days in November, trying to hit as many of the daily prompts as possible. That’s not something I’ve ever done before, or even thought myself capable of doing.
(I don’t think this is a tag-another-person thing, but hey everyone jump in on this! I love seeing the answers of authors I read! :D )

Do strong female characters still exists?
It’s me again. Been a while, right? well... this post has been created thanks to a random thought in my brain were I compared Sarah (from Labyrinth) and Tauriel (yes, her again, I know that many years have passed but I’m still pissed by her existence).
So what do we understand by “Strong Female Character” or, better yet, what do we want as one?
Lately the entertainment industry has placed in our brains that a Strong Woman is the one who can kick ass just as good as a man. Is it like that? My answer is no.
A Strong Character (male or female) is the one that doesn’t give up no matter if the odds are on it’s favor or not. Someone who literally has the world against but is still ready to fight in the name of whatever he or she protects because deep down he/she knows is the right thing to do according to his/her morals. It’s quite important to highlight the “ is the right thing to do according to his/her morals” so we don’t fall through the ilussion that everything this character does is good or in name of a greater good: no everybody is goodie-goodie, you know... a villain can -and should- be a strong character too. He/she must evolve by learning from his/her mistakes and assume the consecuences of his/her actions. Doesn’t it sounds more compelling than an “super awesome strong character”? It does to me.
Strong Female Character
In the field of “women inside fictional stories” you can find the typical “Damsel in Distress”, the (so feared) “Mary Sue” and, I’d like to believe, the “Strong Female”.
For several years the Damsel in Distress was the norm. That virginal, pure, sweet girl or princess that had to be rescued from the claws of evil so she could live happily ever after in the arms of her beloved was The Thing. She was a role model back on the day when girls had to marry beasts (that sometimes were kind of a good guy after all) like Belle, or “be nice” like Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Snowhite. Beeing physically weak was (apparently) quite appealing in a young woman and it was even better if she was ill as well (nothing to serious, off course, but enough for her to lie in a couch all day suffering... and I’m not making this up, I’ve read it in Agatha Christie’s autobiography. She complains more than once of how her grandmother seemed to wanted her to embody Camille’s -or La Dame aux Camélias- lead character so she could get a husband). All of us has seen this girl at least once.
Time passed by and women became a little more powerful year after year. And no, I didn’t made a big jump from 1700′s to the final days of 2016. I’m talking about those women who started to write and, while doing it, creating a new place for women. Louisa May Alcott, the Brontë sisters, Jane Austen, Mary Shelley are the names that all of us know and many might have read -I didn’t, I’ve only read Shelley’s Frankenstein, the others are not my cup of tea- and I’m quite sure that there are many many more. With them Strong Females were born. I know, “all of them dressed in pretty dresses and had no violent action nor knew how to fight... how could they be Strong Females?” well... maybe because they were always fighting to have a voice? or because they were trying to break the tradition of beeing a daugther to become a wife and later a mother? Jo March, trying to be a writer and not caring if anyone said that she wasn’t feminine enough (when she cuts her hair to get some money or because she whistles!), not to mention certain sacrifices she (and her sisters) do to live day by day, is a strong character. Would you deny it? Maybe she’s not “the one” that will end an evil goverment, she won’t beat the crap out of her enemies nor will face the world alone holding nothing but a pocket-knife... but she’s strong and anyone can relate herself with her (and a young woman who doesn’t like “Little Women” and never could read beyond the chapter of the party at Laurie’s -after trying to read the book twice- is saying that!). Josephine March can kick some serious Strong Female’s asses today and she was “born” in 1868! Those were real Strong Females and that’s why nowdays they are still considerated role models -maybe-.
The All Mighty Mary Sue: now we found a big jump in time... times where women gotta be everything (good, pure and innocent at the same time that she’s a master assasin who can kill a hundred men blindfolded in the middle of the dark). I know that “Mary Sue” has becomed pretty much a curse word specially among those who write this type of characters -or at least enjoy them-. No-one likes to say that they like a token character that is as empty as the head of a Barbie doll and brings nothing to the story beyond her charming presence. Ok, there is another kind of Mary Sue, the Lead Character, she and her issues are the main reason why the story exists (Bella Swan from Twilight is a good example). In both roles (side character or main one) she’s worthless and depends A LOT of the men around her. Main Character Bella is nothing without her relationship with Edward, Jacob and her dad. Sure, she’s got some female friends but, in comparison with those three guys, she hardly talks to them. How do you think the book would’ve been without the love story and the differences with her dad? Side Character Tauriel (sorry, I can’t help it) is nothing without her relationships with Thranduil, Legolas and Kili. And she has NO female friends. What other version of this character could’ve existed without all of it?
Strong Females in movies
As I said, lately we had wave after wave of “strong female characters” that are just amaizing in everything they do and, sometimes, are even better than the men around them. Is it bad? No, but it could be a big “yes” depending on the story or in how often we get to see it.
All movies nowdays seem to believe that having a super-powerful woman is good and having a more “traditional” one is as bad as having a damsel in distress. Times have changed, I know, we do not need to “have” a man to be someone as it used to happen in the ‘50s... we can save ourselves, we can use guns, we can fight but does that mean that we are strong? Physically strong: sure... Strong-strong? not quite.
Of course it’s awesome to see a good fight on a movie (I quite enjoy them) but beyond the fantastic moves of this character we love is there anything to back it up? Is there a good reason to take that road? Was there a better choice? Here’s the random thought on my brain that made me write this article. Scene comparison ahead:
Labyrinth (1986):
youtube
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014)
youtube
Let’s see... In both cases the heroines (filled with anger while thinking of calling Tauriel like that) find themselves against someone who doesn’t let them go on or their journey to save a baby brother (Sarah) or hot dwarf  a bunch of dwarves (Tauriel). In both cases this obstacle is an authority figure, Sir Didymus -guardian of the bridge- and Thranduil, the Elvenking. It’s the same dilemma... but two different reactions. Sarah, a teenager, chooses to talk to the guardian, to be reasonable with him so she can get his permision... and she has it! Tauriel, an adult elf, chooses to shut up and threatens the King’s life.
“You idiot! Tauriel is trying to save the dwarves lifes, there’s no time to talk and be nice! It’s a war!” Oh, really? What if I tell you that Sarah only has 13 hours to save her baby brother before he turns into a goblin? Actually maybe she has less than three hours to save him in that scene, considerating that sometime later we see a 13 hours clock marking 11 sharp. She doesn’t have that much time does she? We saw that Ludo defeated Sir Didymus and that he’s also capable of holding him in his hand, Sarah could’ve easily asked Ludo to hold him until she crossed the bridge... heck! she could’ve kicked Sir Didymus out of her way and cross! But she didn’t because she didn’t needed another enemy behind her and she had no reasons to be a jerk. Tauriel decided that convincing her King to help her was a waste of time. After all why a man that knows her, raised her, gave her a job, and send his son to get her back to his kingdom (so she wouldn’t get into trouble) would care about her or her needs? He’s a  cold hearted King, after all (major eye roll).
Which one is the strongest (and again, we’re not talking about physical strength)? The one that chooses to be gentle and polite or the one that chooses brutal force? It can be resumed in this: wisdom or brutality?
It’s quite funny that the question of wisdom or brutalilty shows up since Tauriel is a Silvan Elf, and they are -as said by Tolkien- less wise and more dangerous. As I said before “less wise” doesn’t mean “stupid” nor means “savage” as everybody seems to believe. Tolkien was reffering to the way of living of this elves, who turned away from the Valar’s invitation to join them and decided to live in a more “natural” way. A possible paralel to our society would be the hippie movement... we wouldn’t call them savages, would we?
As a character that was created to show how merceful we are it’s quite shocking to see Tauriel taking such a violent turn to get what she wants. The worst thing now is that we (anti-Tauriel people) can’t even say that that’s how teenagers behave, since Sarah in her 15s has shown the opposite reaction.
I ask you: of all the movies you’ve seen this year... did all the women took the high road instead of the easy one -that one beeing beating the crap out of someone to get what they wanted-? If violence was used: was this choice the only option? Did them had a really good reason to do so? If the answer is a “yes” congratulations! you’ve watched a movie with a strong female character (or at least, a good try to be one).
Can a Female Strong Character fall in love?
Of course she can!
Many people believe that their favourite females are criticized because they’ve fallen in love. Once Upon a Time said it first: love is not weakness, it’s strength. Everything’s OK if the girl loves someone, the problem begins when this love is the only reason why she moves a finger or when there’s nothing more for her than it or when love blinds her and makes her take stupid choices (and even forget her awesome set of skills).
Believe it or not, there’s a title for those strong females that after falling in love became -pretty much- damsels in distress or that were never intended to be Strong Females: Trinity Syndrome (you can read more about it here)
A strong female who falls in love? Glad you ask. The first one that comes to my mind is Lisbeth Salander from the Millennium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson, she goes through hell and yet falls in love but it never really affects her personality in a negative way (she was distant to people around her and opens up to Mikael -the guy she loves- but only with him and SPOILER ALERT once her heart breaks she’s still the same one). What about Princess Leia (RIP Carrie Fisher) she was tough, and smart and completly capable of comanding a group of rebels... but she falls in love anyway and it doesn’t change her at all. Any ot Tolkien’s women who fall in love are still the same and because of their love they push the boundaries and accomplish great deeds (Lúthien), others doesn’t need to fall in love to do so (Éowyn, Haleth). There are many more examples, sadly no so many from the last decade.
I’d like to do just one more comparison before finish this part.
Singin’ in the rain (1952)
youtube
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)
youtube
Both of them ended up facing the love of their lives (yikes! in Tauriel’s case). Both men think that only because of their looks (probably) they got the girl and will live together happily ever after but first, they have to charm her and both go the wrong way with sexual innuendos, touches and glances. Kathy Selden (RIP Debbie Reynolds) knows what’s going on and thinks of the best way to get out of such situation, she even uses physical strength when it’s needed. She won’t let a men to get his way with her. Tauriel knows what’s going on and decides to go on with the game... say what? Girl, you hardly know him! He could be a dangerous prisioner... and you’re flirting with him? How did you get the title of Captain of the Guard? I wonder if any orc has pulled such a move on her and if she reacted the same way.
Again, we have a strong female and a female (I’ll even say that she’s how men would love to see women behave).
Conclussion
So? Do they still exists? Yes, I think. There aren’t many, but every now and then one shows up (Lisbeth Salander is the last one I’ve meet so far).
What about all the other women in the movies and books? They could be strong characters if the writers could put a little more effort. So far we have the male idealization of a woman (you know: super hot, awesome fighter, love-sick puppy, independent but not that much) and the female version of this male idealization (fighter, sometimes insecure, lives to love her man and protect him, etc). It’s quite scary if we see them like that. I wouldn’t be frightened if all girls grew up the way I did; I know, I’m not the best example out there, but I know that I was taught not to let anyone (male or female) to put me down or to “show me my place”. And this teaching came from my family, not movies, TV shows or books (at least not in my early years) this three tools were for entertainment purposes, nothing more.
Today we live in a different world were the image prevails and this is the same world were parents have no time to be with their kids or doesn’t know how to prepare them for the world out there or don’t want to be the kind of parents that smother their kids by controlling what they watch or read because that will make them “bad parents”. It’s not like that, kids depend on us all. WE have to be their role models, not a character or toy. How come that I grew up playing with my Barbie dolls and I don’t want to be a supermodel or blonde or super skinny? Because I had a good education at home. How is it possible that I grew up watching and admiring the Disney’s princesses and yet I’m not looking for Prince Charming nor I care if I look like them or not? Because I was taught the difference between a movie and the real life. I also learned, many years later, that gender doesn’t matter: if a character has a good set of morals we can apply them too... who cares if said character was a men or a woman?
I wish that newer generations could be able to learn that you have to be yourself, that makes you strong not your ability with the sword but the reason why you’re using it and the fears you’re facing.
I wish that newer generations wouldn’t need a Strong Female Character because they’ll be their own.
