Tag Game: 5 Underrated Things
Thank you @beetle-goth for the tag! Sorry this took so long XD
Underrated Band: St Arnaud! They're melancholy indie jazzy stuff, and incredibly catchy. Gotten me through many tough times.
Underrated Book: I read The Memory Bank as a kid and have thought about it ever since. Gorgeous story & worldbuilding, but more importantly the illustrations are sooo gorgeous and detailed! So many lovely group scenes full of life!! That book very much inspired my perspective on life tbh, and everyone should take a sec to look up the art if you wanna see something cool :D
Underrated Movie: Big Night (with Stanley Tucci & Tony Shaloub) changed my brain chemistry forever aghhhh
Underrated Food: rice pudding all the way. Put some cinnamon in that shit, mm mm!!
Free Space: MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG!!! Everyone needs to go listen to the original cast recording /right now/ (the revivals are good too I guess). It's a SONDHEIM MUSICAL and it's HEARTBREAKING and it's TOLD BACKWARDS and it's ABOUT SHOW BUSINESS & FRIENDSHIP & DREAMS and it's VERY GAY IN MY OPINION (listen to Good Thing Going and Franklin Shepard Inc and TELL me I'm wrong)!!!!!!
Tagging @sleepymccoy, @dovand, @im-just-a-silly-lil-guy and literally whoever else wants to <3

Socks' Ultimate Phantoms list
Phantoms
Franc D'Ambrosio - Yes. Brings all the sad noises and I am here for it. Nice voice. Excellent acting and facial expressions. Very expressive eyes. Is a cinnamon roll irl. Gary Mauer - Best voice ever. 10/10 would believe this man was an angel. Greg Mills - Looks like a cinnamon roll, will kill you. I never thought tongue action could be sexy but here we are. Ted Keegan - Looks like a cinnamon roll, is a cinnamon roll. Surprisingly sexy. Killian Donnelly - Looks like a cinnamon roll. I can't explain why I like him, but I do. Christopher Carl - I've only heard audio of him but I like him based on how he sobbed on the golden angel. Jeremy Stolle - Nice voice. Acting is too subtle. Peter Karrie - I love how he takes certain notes up a step, just to show that he can. Slightly nasally, but tolerable. Davis Gaines - tbh all I remember really is him slowly rocking his hips while he was sprawled on the portcullis and I now judge all phantoms on a metric of how good their pants look. 9/10 his pants. Peter Joback - I absolutely hated him when he sang in English. I liked him a little better when he did the show in Swedish. James Hume - Unmemorable. Michael Nicholson - Excellent acting choices. Was thinking about him for two weeks after watching. I just really like the production in German, okay? Earl Carpenter - Better in his earlier runs. Good acting choices. Simon Pryce - Very deep voice. Stands nicely. Scott Davies - He looked like fun and I wanted to like him. Noped out of that one pretty quick. Too much vibrato. Anthony Crivello - From the Vegas boot! I actually don't remember too much about him. But I know I liked the boot! Ben Crawford - Tended to have really weird pronunciation toward the end of his run. He was decent when I saw him right after the Broadway reopening. The most remarkable thing he did was to belly slide all the way across the stage during STYDI. Other than that, I recall nothing specific. Thiago Arancam - Remarkable only in the fact that he is boring. Uwe Kroger - The boob-stroking guy. I remember nothing else. Cooper Grodin - Entertaining in the fact that his acting is so wooden. Nice voice when he's not doing blocking at the same time. Good pants. It helps that he never skips leg day. Laird Mackintosh - I think he was good? I honestly don't remember. Geronimo Rauch - I remember I liked him! Norm Lewis - Nice voice, a little boring. Sorry Norm. John Owen-Jones - Hands. Michael Crawford - Absolutely not. I do not understand what anyone sees in him. His voice sounds like it's about to snap any second, and he is very unsexy. David Shannon - Yes. Absolutely yes. Excellent acting choices and nice voice. Does sad very well. Deserved better. Saulo Vasconcelos - All I can recall is @wheel-of-fish spamming the chat with "hands" all night and that's all anyone really needs to know about his Phantom. Ethan Freeman - Looks like a goddamn stick insect during Final Lair and I am here for it. Looks like Tony Shaloub. Bronson Norris Murphy - Technically only was the Phantom in Love Never Dies. RIP. He deserved better. Anyway. His voice is a little deeper than Franc's or Gary's. I wish he had gotten a chance to play the Phantom in POTO proper. I am very curious as to how he would have played it. Looks like a cinnamon roll, is a burnt cinnamon roll. Ramin Karimloo - He was my intro to POTO on stage. I liked his performance enough that I went looking for more clips of the musical, and found the Saturday Streams. Eiji Akutagawa - Ah yes. The self-groping Phantom. That's all I can remember about him. Josh Piterman - Does sad very well. Gerard Butler - My first-first Phantom. I still like him. There's something about his voice that I do actually like, and it annoys me very much when people go "he can't sing" yes he can, everyone has the ability to sing. Just shut up and let me enjoy what I like in peace. Hugh Panaro - Great voice, excellent acting. Funny. Fun to watch. Reminds me of Franc, in that they're both innocent/childish. Hugh is more childish and angry. Looks like he could kill you, and he might, it depends on his mood.

I liked the part with the Intermediate Bulk Containers.
Galaxy Quest is a pretty amusing Star Trek send up that grows less overtly comedic and more compelling as it goes. By the end it had almost entirely dropped the parody, and was just a genuinely fun fish-out-of-water sci-fi adventure.
The whole cast gave solid, funny performances, but Tony Shaloub was the comedic standout. Every scene of him and his weirdly nonchalant acceptance of the weird stuff happening made me laugh. The bit where they all beamed onto the ship and it was like a horror movie but he arrived grinning was so good. I'm glad he got to be the alien-fucker he was born to be, and who can blame him? Missi Pyle was so adorable I could *almost* overlook the whole "monstrous squid creature" thing myself.
I love that they commented on how clean the floors of the real spaceship were. I also love that Tim Allen lost his shirt as soon as they went on an away mission, and that Sigourney Weaver's cleavage became progressively more exposed as the movie went on in line with her character's treatment on the show. The part where Sam Rockwell took her hands and broke down crying "Mommy! Mommy! Mommy!"? Perfectly understandable behaviour. Who among us wouldn't do the same in her presence?
Entertaining and well made. A great time.

Hmm picture this, a pregnant Beniot playing Among Us with a few celebrities in the living room couch. Philip is out doing his job of baking commissions for people (who are loaded and have a sweet tooth) so to get a lot of money for a big house. Beniot then sees a letter addressed to him and sees that it's an invitation to the Detective club he joined in Highschool reunion and he goes there without telling Philip ( the baker calls his husband to say he'll be about three weeks late due to the many back orders he has to do and decided to sleep at the bakery to get them done quicker). Beniot leaves, leaving a note and got all the stuff he needed for the trip to New Orleans. He meets up with a group of his old detective club and as they're chatting away, talking about what they did with their lives (one's an actor, another is a doctor, the third is an animal trainer and the fourth is a CEO of a company that helps make safe sanitary pads and tampons for women of all kind including those who are transiting to a man if they haven't gotten bottom surgery done), a scream is heard and a body is found by the gang. So Beniot decided he'll look for the killer, with the group following him around to help out as well.
My love. I am so utterly fond of this that I’ve taken forever to answer because I wanted to ensure it got the attention it deserves. It is so wonderful and perfect and fun that I would take a whole fic of it and read it over and over.
Benoit lounging around their apartment because he’s in the third trimester and he knows Philip wants him to relax and be careful, but he is so bored and unstimulated! His celebrity friends (this time - Tony Shaloub, Walter Mosley, Gillian Anderson, and Robert Downey Jr.) ask after him and the pregnancy, and he admits that while he’s eager to have the babies, he does wish things were a little decentered from them at the moment, especially since Philip is to be away for some weeks time.
When the invitation arrives, it’s written with an old cipher the group used back in the old days and he’s delighted to remember it and have the offer to visit. Nothing against your suggestion, but I think he would tell Philip about the trip and the man would hesitantly allow it, with certain restrictions about how he cares for himself during it (which he obviously neglects to some degree). After getting a doctor’s note to fly, he packs his bags and is off to New Orleans, invitation in hand. Also I’m just picturing a scene on the plane where he’s stuck next to some overly friendly person that keeps asking him about the pregnancy and putting their hands on his stomach in a mad intrusive way, but Blanc is just too polite to tell them off, lol.
He goes to meet the group at a restaurant and everyone seems quite happy to see one another. My cast for the group in my mind is Laurence Fishburne for the actor, Lucy Liu for the doctor, Hugh Jackman for the animal trainer, and Octavia Spencer for the CEO. They talk about their jobs, their families, how mystery solving has fit into their worlds. I imagine there would be some amount of jealousy over how Blanc was the only one that made a career out of it. But otherwise it is a lovely evening of old and new memories.
They end up trying to continue the night in Blanc’s fancy hotel (I’m picturing Maison de la Luz - look up pics, it would be perfect for this), only to get barely up to his room when they hear screaming from what turns out to be the guest house. They arrive to a body just before the hotel staff does and while the police are called, Blanc still offers his - and the group’s - expertise. So much for staying stress-free for the sake of the babies.

Ok some more mayhem thoughts
I rlly love donnies contribution isnt being a super genius thats such a departure its refreshing his contribution is essentially galaxy quest the redux
Idg the person saying disputing the line abt raphs rage problem like yeah saying you dream of fighting us indictive of like a rage issue bc like the fervor at which he said it plus when we saw him fight? Literally kept beating on the dude after he gave information
Im not thinking too hard abt how age w the mutants work bc the movie told me not too but i do think its interesting. Like having the movie itself make a distinction tht scuddlebutt is an adult and i guess if Superfly was the oldest he was too? Neway we didnt have a chance of old man yuri sadly bc baxter is probably dead but idk i think itd be fun if he's brought back
I enjoy the move past the overgeneralizing mystic east backstory and just having them been created from lab ooze, this is the first splinter w no connection to japan (im counting the ninjitsu book in the 2014 movie) which is interesting n i was so right abt tht lol like splinter being cast as jackie chan caused such uproar n just like when tony shaloub was cast i was right to not raise angry pitchforks. Also wrt seth rogen n bebop the mutants were nvr human so i think its fine tht hes got a white va now n also bebop doesnt even speak. Genghis frog only has a few less lines than him. Rocksteady felt mute lol
I loved the ending i loved the way this depicted nyc. the idea of actual new yorkers seeing them at first n thinking they were times squares performers. The way that they too fought against Superfly? I love the Alvin and the chipmunks situation the boys have especially idk in todays ~climate~ the idea of people banding together against a common enemy is cool i loved everyone being cool with the turtles
Like the narrative choice of 'oh actually when you do the hard thing n put urself out there you'll find ppl wholl help you be connected' very cute.
Overall it felt like such a culmination of all that's come before and i rlly hope we see Superfly and cynthia Utrom again

ReWatch: The X-Files - S2, E23 - 24
Ep 23: Soft Light Listen.  All he had to do was use words, explain what was going on instead of saying 'no wait, no wait'.  Wait for what?  There were no directions!   Ep would have been 15 minutes otherwise I suppose.
So weird to see Tony Shaloub.  What they did to his character though, that is ... disturbing.  Confining him to be studied, basically forever.  And really nice use of sound at the end because it made the whole thing that much creepier.
Not sure why, but I was eh about this one.  I appreciate Mulder's sunglasses and see that Scully's suits are still very square.
Ep 24: Our Town And here's a random episode about processed chicken and (gag)
A factory has a staff physician, interesting.  He's lying.  A pickup truck goes into the water and I'm all, look at the petals floating... yeah, not flower petals but run off from the factory. omg this is so disgusting.  And 87 people have gone missing over the years.
Scully was surprisingly calm about almost having her head cut off.  She didnt' even struggle as she was placed in the restraint (he touches her hair after removing the duct tape! 💜)
omg the slogan was "Good people, good food"  deargod.
Love that this episode has sun (and good lighting!!!)!  In the early years of the show the sun was rarely seen, what with all the rain in Vancouver.

Our kids names were Luke and Cris
Lucas is what I'd actually name one of my kids if I ever have any
And I will let them know they are 100% named after Lucas Grabeel
And Cris short for Cristiano named after my favorite character Marc Anthony ever played which is also his smallest role but I love that character so fucking much
It was in a Stanlet Tucci and Tony Shaloub movie that I highly recommend. It's called Big Night.
Here's Marc and Stanley

OH GOD I REMEMBER THIS ONE WITH TONY SHALOUB IT'S SO FUCKED UP HE CUT OFF HIS DEAD WIFE'S HAND OUT OF LOVE JFC
Ally is 29 and thinks in a year she'll have a better chance of being struck by lightning than get married which. Y'all. Really? Sleepless in Seattle was talking in 1992 about that being bullshit and that is a movie where Meg Ryan is fucking crazier than you.
Renee: Women reach their prime in their 30s.
Ally: Says who?
Renee:...Women in their 40s?
Oh, FUCK y'all.
Richard wants to dump Ling since she's just putting his finger in her mouth and her hair on his chest and not his dick in her vagina. And honestly? It's been months, like at least six months probably more. If he wants sex and you don't? Um I don't really think this is going to work guys. Just a feeling.
Lololol John is gaslighting Renee in court with selectively squeaky shoes.
Georgia is super bugged out by comb overs. Oh Georgia, remind me to never invite you to Thanksgiving with my dad. I'm also not sure what this legal proceeding is about and why the opposition wants to see what's under his comb over. Which, um, I'm pretty sure is a bald head.
Elaine is prepping for Ally's birthday with a big musical number. "I know she hates the attention, so I'm doing my part to make it all about me." Also she's being shitty to the backup singers at the bar. BE NICE TO RENEE ELISE GOLDSBERRY ELAINE I'LL FIGHT YOU.
Richard has now dumped Ling, but "nothing's really changed" um yeah I'm pretty sure she literally owns you now Richard. Just be Zen about it or whatever.
John is lamenting being 35, versus Ally's 29, though she says that's young for a man. Somehow this leads to him kissing her. Uh. John? Didn't she already kinda tell you she's not into you?.
Elaine tries to convince ling that Richard will eventually be led by his dick in the direction of the nearest doinkable chick. There's growling.
Ally and John are bumming over birthdays and never having had the kind of love where someone is so devoted to you that they would cut off your hand. Ally is back to her whole "I crave emotional dependence and the weakness that comes with that" and I don't even know sometimes what they're trying to say about women and love. I wonder if this kinda stuff is where the whole "romantic love equals weakness for women and therefore they must reject happiness to be forever alone which is the only way they can be Strong Female Characters™"
Richard is doing the knee pit thing to reciprocate for ling's whole "I'm amazing in bed it'll change your life it'll destroy you"
BARRY WHITE!
youtube
This is where this show does it right. It's so ridiculous so much of the time but then there's these moments of joyfulness and pure fun that keep you going.

I’ve been meaning to watch Galaxy Quest for years literally just because of the cast and because I heard it was good, but that was such a ridiculously fun time. Literally the best decision ever. I am thrilled.

Thinking about the scene in the first season of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel when Joel goes to Abe’s office and badgers him until he lets him and then lays out all of his financials. And he shows him how his promotion will allow him to totally provide for Midge and the kids and they’ll be set. And Abe is, very quietly like, “I’m good at math--there’s nothing left for you.” And Joel is insistent that he’ll be fine. He’ll manage and with the new job he’ll probably move to California eventually. And Abe, with this very fatherly combination of seriousness and tenderness, says, “what about the kids?” And Joel says, “They don’t need me.” And Abe doesn’t say anything but you can just TELL because of Tony Shaloub’s acting that Abe doesn’t believe that. And Joel can tell too, so he’s like “really, it’s for the best” and he backs out of the room.
And I don’t know but there’s something about the relationship between Abe and Joel. Abe is an infinitely more measured man than Joel’s own father. He values character over appearance in a way his father doesn’t (who’s not a bad man!). And at the end of the day, who can Joel go to? Not Midge because she’s the person he hurt. Not his mother because she’s still his little boy. Not his own dad because his dad is just frustrated with him.
But Abe is a good man. And he loves Miriam. And he’s such a dad and even when he hates Joel, I think there’s a part of him that knows he’s lost. That recognizes that Joel knows he’s screwed up beyond anything he deserves to be forgiven for. And Abe wanted better for him because he wanted the best for his daughter. And idk but Abe has paternal anger combined with honesty and a bit of tenderness that, when it meets Joel’s guilt and honesty and desperation to fix things, creates one of the most interesting dynamics to watch.

Young Paul Benedict (Harry Bentley, The Jefferson's ) taken May 1959, found online at Digital Commonwealth.
I started watching The Jeffersons last weekend—a hilarious show with one of the best themes songs. Bentley is definitely one of my favorite characters!
There’s not much about him online, but I did find a lovely obituary from The Vineyard Gazette. Here some quotes:
“Theatre veteran Robert Brustein, founder of the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge and honorary board member of the Vineyard Playhouse, said yesterday he knew Mr. Benedict through both.
“He was just a lovely man and a lovely actor, and he was very devoted to the Vineyard,” Mr. Brustein said. Mr. Benedict did a lot of staged readings and plays on the Church street stage, Mr. Brustein said, including a reading of his collection of short works, Seven Elevens, with Tony Shaloub and Brooke Adams this past summer.
“He was totally modest and very unassuming,” Mr. Brustein said. “Paul loved to be on the stage and would choose the stage over anything,” he added, though Mr. Benedict also appeared in film and television.
“Paul did not demand anything in the way of billing or other ego things, he just loved to be on stage,” Mr. Brustein said.”
“The actor had a passion for raccoons, and would let them eat out of his hands, Mr. Brustein said. In his note to playhouse board members about Mr. Benedict’s death, Dr. Yukevich wrote: “He touched absolutely everybody he knew on the Island, even casually, including a number of way up-Island raccoons and deer who were fattened up summer after summer by Paul’s own generous hand. (Fig Newmans, anyone?)”
Even the comments under the post, only had nice things to say about Paul.
“I just found this site. Paul came into my life after my mother had divorced my father, 1965(?) I was five years old then and Paul was the sweetest, most gentle person I ever knew. . He lived with us for several years and I never once saw him angry, but he enthusiastically spoke to me and my sister Sarah, two years older than I, as if were adults but with a soft tone of serious affection. He delighted in many small things like the toaster or the lawn sprinkler and he created a magical story for us about "Sleepy Freddy," and his pet skunk, "Hepzibah." I visited Paul in Los Angeles during his time on the Jefferson's and soaked across his hot tub from him at his magical place perched on the edge of Nichols Canyon in the Hollywood Hills. He was proud of his white BMW 2002 and he loved taking me for rides a couple times to his soundstage in Studio City. He kept a glass gallon jug for his pennies and when left for Hollywood, he gave to me and Sarah, half full of pennies.”
