mirabels birthday so here’s some headcanons !!!🦋💘

- she zones out a LOT! whatever she’s working on/ thinking about takes priority in her mind so she accidentally gets so invested she could forget someone’s talking to her! (this doesn’t help in school)

- She’s a try hard on everything! probably stems from her giftless status but she gets frustrated if she can’t be up to standards! she ends up exhausting herself or burning out because she overworks herself!

- social butterfly! she’s a people person and loves talking to both the adults and the kids! she loves validation from the adults and being a role model to the kids!

- never stops talking😭 mirabels a professional yapper🙏 DONT ever ask her to explain what she’s working on because she will not shut up ever!!!

- carries around a sketchbook with her and goes to different parts of the encanto for inspiration! she might just doodle a motif or theme but it’s always something! she uses it later in her projects

- stealing @spooky-spextre-arts hc here but I love this one sm!! after Antonio’s plushie he tells the other kids and she makes a load of plushies for everyone!!

- she painted the mural in family madrigal! I think alma is aware mirabels artsy and would have asked her to do it! since it’s special commission that’s why the husbands are absent! mirabel was just so excited to be asked! Also it fits her art style

- she makes clothes! She designs them AND makes them!!

- she has friends! she’s incredibly social and I refuse to believe there’s only 2 teens in the encanto

- she likes cooking with julieta! even if she’s not the best at it she just appreciates the time with her mother!

- she helps Luisa discover her own style! since Luisa’s outfit is for work mirabel makes her other outfits to wear on her days off

- when she gets a crush she’s super annoying about it! Love language is acts of service!

- makes fun of camilo for being cringe (she is also cringe)

- Antonio is her fave cousin (this ones basically canon)

- a home bird!! she can’t ever picture herself leaving the encanto and this causes some friction between her and isa because isa does leave at some point!

- vents to casita about anything and everything (they are best friends)

- still struggles with opening up to people post movie. she’s not user to all the attention on her and gets overwhelmed often (she would never admit it)

- hates her birthdays (this one’s sad ik) but not only is it the anniversary of her ceremony but the day bruno left and in her mind the beginning of the cracks! she’s getting better but it’s still hard! (Her family spoil her for this exact reason)

- when she’s not playing music in the town she often plays with Felix and Dolores!

Beach town au

Ceremonies are a celebration, but the actual BIRTHDAY is deemed much more important. Gifts are a constant, but birthdays are special. They exist to celebrate that you actually made it this long.

Mirabel does get a gift in this au but I’m not sure what yet. I just know it’s something that has to do with creation.

Shells are used as currency, but some shells are left on the beach in case some sea creature needs it. As well as that, when baby turtles are hatching from the sand the villagers make sure to protect the lil dudes until they get to the water. It’s a tradition Pedro and his wifey started and everybody just hopped on board.

Dolores’ gift is something she can turn on and off at will. I saw someone have this theory and I stick with it. There’s no way in god's green earth Casita would give a gift of super hearing without giving her a choice in whether she can turn it on or off.

Now, Julieta’s food is truly loved but her shaved ice and paletas (Ice pops) are a must have. Especially during the summer. She doesn’t use her gift all that much unless it’s an emergency. So, she has no problem setting up a cart to give out summer treats and such. (But her family always get first dibs)

Mariano and Dolores are getting married soon! It’ll be a beach wedding of course. The dress won’t be too big, seeing as it’s a little toasty in Encanto (I mean, people can do it but it’s going to be a hot wedding day if they do). Traditional wedding dresses in Encanto are sheer and short or with a long mermaid tail look but thin.

Oh yeah, Isabela is a certified surfer (all the madrigals are) but she likes doing it more often.

Shells as currency is so cool. <33 I mean, it’s an island, currency being shells isn’t obviously an issue 😭 ALSO THE BABY TURTLES I’M CRYING 🦈🦈🦈 everybody hoping on board is so silly.

Love this au sm <3333 I like how the birthdays are way more important than the gift <333 like it’s not a ceremony, it’s a birthday celebration. I imagine the gifts are just viewed as some present by the candle/Casita. W Casita for letting Dolores’ gifts being a choice 🙏

I think?? They would still wear white/gold on their birthday, but they do that so that whoever’s birthday it is can stand out. Not that it’s hard to tell. Their birthday parties are always beach parties; I think Pedro and Alma gift them their first surfboard on their 5th birthday, cause they see them as old enough to start learning how to surf lmao

W Isabela and Julieta. Isabela has way too much fun in Isabela when she’s surfing. I also think she’s one of the main ones to help Antonio’s learn how (besides Mirabel), and I think she also insisted on teach Mirabel and Camilo when they were little.

I’m not sure what you want to hear specifically, but let’s talk about what the rest of the grandkids are up to.

Luisa (24) is the next Madrigal to be married off. She’s managed to avoid it for a few years because of how busy she is, but with only one great-grandchild after all this time, Alma is getting a little impatient. She’s gotten some time off work recently to spend time with potential suitors. Needless to say, she’s very stressed.

Camilo (20) is the golden boy of the Madrigals, quite literally given his colour. He has basically adopted all the attention and praise Isabela left behind since her marriage to Mariano (and the following disappointment that she hasn’t been able to have a child). He is the example that young Antonio is being held to.

Mirabel (20) has not been enthusiastic about sharing her room with Dolores’ son and is desperately praying that this (Antonio’s fifth birthday) is the end of that. She is hugely shadowed and forgotten in the family. And usually missing at meals or ceremonies, not that anyone has noticed her absence.

NEW AU!!!! CUZ MY BRAIN CANT REST.

so this au is called caged souls, but not literally caged souls 👌

It will be where Pedro and Alma switch (I see that sm and I just wanted to do it tooo) And where gifts switch too!! But only from the grandkids, maybe, I don’t know yet 🤷‍♀️ the timeline is a month after Antonio’s ceremony!

The switches of the gifts:

Isabela = super strength

Luisa = giftless

Mirabel = creation\manipulation plants

Dolores = shapeshifting

Camilo =communicating with animals

Antonio = super hearing

Pedro is mentally unstable in this au, not insane but not good yk, and bc of him it makes it hard for the family. He does have favorites and he doesn’t hide his favoritism at all

The order is =

1- Isabela, why? Cause ofc she looks the most like Alma, Pedro believes that she was a gift from Alma and that she is like an angel from heaven. And her super-strength makes it way more believable for him. Isabela hates the idea of being an replacement for her grandmother but she has no choice. (She mostly gets forced into the role.)

2- Dolores, why? Since age of 7 dolores often turns into Alma for him, she sits in front of him while he talks about a lot of stuff, pretending that he’s talking with the real Alma. Sometimes it can get physically (not in a weird way 💀 but abusive way because she can’t keep her form forever or bc he’s going insane) and Dolores gets told everything from him, ofc she’s forced to keep the secrets a secret. (Dolores hates being her dead grandmother.)

3- Camilo, why? Animals were a thing that Alma loved, he thinks that the connection Camilo has with animals is as close as Alma had with the animals too. The beauty being the nature Camilo and Alma had in common is a blessing for him.

4- Luisa, why? Luisa is a very kind soul, even without a gift she has proven him that she could be much more, that power doesn’t always matter no that it comes from heart. (Just like his Alma.)

5- Antonio, why? He is a bright child, with a bright future, Pedro thinks with his gift he can hear a lot of beautiful sounds, like the waterfalls (the place he would go to with Alma.) or the forest (the hangout spot he made with Alma in the forest.) but Antonio doesn’t quiet reach his eyes yet. As if Antonio still needed to prove himself.

6- and the last, Mirabel. Why? He thinks that Mirabel has NOTHING to do with Alma. (Even if he’s very very wrong) not with the personality, interest, or her gift. Sure she may has a beautiful gift, but creating flowers isn’t as special as planting them. Alma loved flowers for sure but everyone does and she loves unique ones not the basic ones, therefore, Pedro has banned Mirabel from using her gift, seeing it as complete waste.

Mirabel being the last favorite again 🥲 I LOVE HER I SWEAR BUT I JUST GOTTA MIX SOME STUFF UP 😭 also their outfits are a lot different than the original ones, more with jewelry and more detailed, he thinks it’s better if they shine brighter then anyone in town. Any thoughts or asks? 🙌

Sorry it took me long to answer this! Life has been kinda busy lately. I've been preparing for uni and I'm in the process of applying to some now.

Just... look at this art style, it literally always takes my breath away ITS BEAUTIFUL. So expressive and unique, I love it sm. They also have an encanto fanfiction too, it's set a few years in the future and is Mirabel x oc, I would never usually look for those stories on my own, since I'm not really into non canonical ships, but the art they made for it intrigued me and although I haven't read it in a while, from what I did read it was amazing. Really well written and descriptive!

Weeks have passed since the performance at Carlos' gig. It was difficult to get the memory out of your head, every now and then it would replay as it would toy with your emotions. Your feelings for your best friend were rupturing and fluttering all over the place. It was blatant that you loved him back yet you have no idea how to tell it to him.

You sat deep in thought with a frown as your friends chattered their way during lunch, not sparing you a glance. Carlos has been deliberately avoiding you and evidently not in the mood to interact with you to talk about what happened at the gig. You badly want to tell him you feel the same but it sounded mediocre. A profession of returned feelings shouldn't be boring.

"Oh my god have you heard about the upcoming festival here at school?"

One of your friends mentioned and it catches your attention as an idea sprouted in your head. You turn to your friend.

"When is the festival?"

"In two days"

"Perfect. I was wondering...can you guys lend me a hand?"

All of your friends tilted their heads and shared a puzzled look. You smiled and huddled close to them, forming a circle. In a hushed voice, you laid out your plan. Your plan to confess to Carlos Madrigal.

Camilo was growing tired of listening to his twin brother playing sad melodies on his electric guitar. So, he confronted Carlos about it and he was not prepared for his brother to explode and groan about how much of an idiot he is.

"I fucking hate myself, Camilo. This is all your fucking fault!"

Clearly, he was embarrassed about doing Camilo's suggestion at his gig. Carlos had to endure his brother laughing at him for five minutes until finally turning sympathetic.

"Ay, hermano. It was worth a shot"

"No, it wasn't! You weren't there! You don't get to see that look on [Name]'s face like ughhhhh! It was the fucking worse that's why I dipped when the show was over"

"Okay, okay. Stop crying you big baby, you'll move on from them"

"And what if I don't?"

Camilo rolled his eyes and pinched his brother by the ear, causing the other to yelp. Carlos appreciated Camilo lending an ear but he couldn't get rid of the heavy feeling he had inside. He figured that you never liked his performance at the gig so he left in a hurry. He completely shut everyone out to wail about his pathetic love life, he still wasn't done about it though. Camilo exhales through his nose.

"Heard the school's having a festival"

"I'm not coming"

"Oh, come on Carlos! Use this as an opportunity to meet someone new, maybe that'll help you move on from [Name]!"

"Shut up, I'm not going"

"I'll break all of your guitar strings and amplifier"

Carlos gasped and looked at Camilo with disbelief, the latter crossed his arms with a sly smirk. Carlos knew his brother like the back of his hand, he knew how crazy he was enough to ruin all of his things just so he can agree to one of his stupid ideas. With a loud groan, Carlos scowled at Camilo.

"Fine..."

Two days eventually flew out of the window as Carlos finds himself avoiding every social interaction at the school festival. He was glad that Camilo ditched him and go be the social butterfly that he is. Hours passed and he was considering leaving the event. Admittedly he wasn't the best at finding human connection though he tried, only to fail. Carlos would rather go home and cry to his guitar up in his room than forcing himself into a social situation.

He sighed, there was no way he was going to move on from you. Everything you did got him locked in cupid's chokehold. And honestly, he liked it even if it hurt. Just when his mind was flooded with the thoughts of you, he never would've guessed who showed up.

"...[Name]?"

Carlos choked out. He rapidly blinked to take in this new sight of you. All dressed in leather and black, your hair was styled as a cigar dangled between your fingers. He gulped when you took a quick drag and looked intently in his eyes.

"Hey there, rockstar"

You called out to him. Your friends all snickered behind you in delight to see Carlos' face go pinkish. Out of nowhere, music begins to play as the beat urges the Madrigal to look around and finally realize what is happening. So, he grins and walks over to you as a challenge.

"I got chills, they're multiplyin'. And I'm losin' control"

"'Cause the power you're supplyin'. It's electrifyin'"

He begins to sing and slowly shrugs off his leather jacket, you copy him as you remained in eye contact with him. Carlos waves his jacket around and shakes his hips before falling to the ground, full of dramatics. You turn to your friends, not knowing what to do. They tell you to drop and stomp on your fake cigar. You do as you were told. You gently kick Carlos back up to his feet as you start to sing.

"You better shape up. 'Cause I need a man and my heart is set on you"

"You better shape up. You better understand, to my heart I must be true"

You point a finger at him and walk up causing him to go backward. So far, he's getting what's happening that's why he keeps smiling at you.

"Nothin' left, nothin' left for me to do"

Carlos dances along to you with the beat, unable to believe that all of this was real but he keeps focusing on you.

"You're the one that I want"

"Ooh, ooh, ooh, honey, the one that I want"

A crowd was forming around you two and started singing along as you both sang in unison, getting lost in both the music and in each other's gazes.

"Ooh, ooh, ooh, honey, the one that I want"

"Ooh, ooh, ooh. The one I need, oh yes, indeed"

You take Carlos' hand with a gleeful grin as you pull him away with you. Carlos couldn't argue a thing and let you steal his heart all over again.

"If you're filled with affection. You're too shy to convey"

"Meditate in my direction. Feel your way"

The smooth sound of your voice as you shook your hips along with the song made the Madrigal swallow and merely lose his composure. The reaction amplifies your confidence, but he steals your breath away with his voice.

"I better shape up 'cause you need a man"

"I need a man who can keep me satisfied"

"I better shape up if I'm gonna prove"

"You better prove that my faith is justified"

Carlos duets with you and it was beyond heavenly. Whenever both of you would sing, your faces were inches apart and enough to snag a kiss, but he holds back in hesitation. Carlos needed a confirmation.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes, I'm sure down deep inside"

Your eyes reassure him and you can feel his heart flutter in utter delight as he sings back. Carlos smirks when you let him chase you and twirl you around.

"You're the one that I want"

"Ooh, ooh, ooh, honey, the one that I want"

"Ooh, ooh, ooh. The one I need, oh yes, indeed"

You jumped into Carlos' arms as he catches you and spins you around. He gently sets you down to dance with you while the music continues. The smile plastered on both of your faces told each other the feelings that were held deep inside.

"You're the one that I want"

"Ooh, ooh, ooh, honey, the one that I want"

"Ooh, ooh, ooh. The one I need, oh yes, indeed"

People gathered around to watch you and Carlos sing and dance, but both of you couldn't care less who was watching because all it mattered is that you two are in sync. He wished this song would go on forever because he couldn't get enough of being beside you.

"You're the one that I want"

"Ooh, ooh, ooh, honey, the one that I want"

"Ooh, ooh, ooh. The one I need, oh yes, indeed"

You enjoyed every moment with Carlos and you're glad that you were able to express how much you loved him back. Fortunately, it brings his hopes up because he's finally confident enough to say it face-to-face that he wants you and you only. The music comes to an end as you and Carlos smiled at each other, deep in each other's eyes.

"You're the one that I want"

Both of you told one another. The huge audience clapped and cheered for the sudden performance. Carlos and you were surprised as you two took a bow. After being showered by various applauds and compliments, Carlos softly drags you by the waist into a quiet area.

"[Name]...are you for real?"

"Oh my god, yes, Carlos! I wouldn't have pulled that stunt back there if I didn't mean it!"

"So, it's true? I'm the one that you want?"

Air gets violently knocked out of Carlos' lungs when you grabbed the sides of his face and gave him a tender kiss. He returns the kiss as his hands snake around your waist to pull you close. Two of you pulled away, foreheads touching each other and extremely filled with love.

"Yes, Carlos. You're the one that I want"

"Te quiero, [Name]"

"I love you too"

i lived overseas in south east asia for a lot of my childhood since my parents were missionaries

i never thought writing would ever be a hobby of mine, though i always loved reading and started reading fanfic when i was 12-13 (don't remember exactly). i only started writing after watching encanto because i had a plot idea for a camilo fic 😭 (it was the most angsty nothing happening but meaningless angst thing you would ever find and ive deleted it off this earth i hate it sm lmao but it was my start)

my family calls me the midnight cookie fairy since 2 years ago i often made cookies in the middle of the night while everyone else was asleep. i think it was to help with stress tbh lmao but my sleep schedule was rly weird back then skdjks (it still is)

Felix and Pepa can never get mad at Dolores no matter what, she there sweet little princess who can never do anything wrong but Camilo is their little devil child and for Antonio they just repeat I’m too old for this

Hmm... interesting hc, I feel that many people share this idea, also for Antonio, and then Camilo is the little rascal.

For me though, whilst I imagine Félix doesn't get mad at her, due to my own relationship with my mom, who is sensitive, I like to think Pepa and Dolores have and have had their moments.

This is basically entirely projecting but, I see Dolores as someone who would be more numb/jaded by things due to her overexposure to... everything. With a sensitive mama, Dolores appearing not particularly happy in her face or getting frustrated or bothered by things she heard sometimes sometimes, even if it's not much or intentional, would cause loud spells of weather, I think.

So, in those kind of situations, on top of Dolores already being in not a glowing mood, I can see her getting irritated by the noise (not because she has anything against her mom or blames her for it, just as a reaction), due to her gift. So, Pepa would also get more upset and emotional, like a positive feedback loop because of their incompatible gifts/traits.

But in the end, out of love for each other, they'd talk it out, make up and calm each other down. I think they end up having a lot of deep and meaningful conversations with each other due to those occasional moments of friction.

(Yes, that was entirely projecting, I literally had something like that with mum today but this is why I love warm family sm 😭😭😭)

B r o what about Villain!Pepa with ApprenticeVillain!Antonio though??? That would be terrifying? Like sure he is smol baby rn but what about when he gets older and absorbs Pepa’s “family protection before morals” vibes? And because he is still a little bit sunshine (as a treat) he does dearly love his whole family.

Bruno comes back, the family is happy again, but after some years pass the people that still don’t want Bruno around start straight up going missing? They walk into the forest to forage or travel and are never seen again. If someone is mean to Luisa making her overwork or makes Dolores jump and cry from a loud noise? They get one chance and then after that they are never around. That guy who keeps letting the donkeys get out gets trampled in a stampede one day, its too bad he didn’t fix that darn fence, but the next stable hand will be more competent. No one can prove anything, animals are unpredictable after all but the coincidences are convenient…

Antonio grows unexpectedly tall and broad just like Augustin and Pepa’s kid would be. Sometimes you catch him looming behind family members he deems to be vulnerable in that moment with a steel glint in his eyes, a glare that they never see since he softens up to them as soon as his attention is caught, though he is still always watching for threats…

Its gotta be nerve wracking accidentally pissing off the Madrigals and having 2 thirds of nature itself suddenly pitted against you.

Ahh anon there's this one fanart of a grown up Antonio at like age 35 I think, here look he looks amazing, peak character design 😭😭😭

Ahh but yes I 100% support the hc that he ends up tall and strong, maybe as tall as Luisa, like dude would look amazing (I also hc Camilo will end up being the shortest one of the siblings cos ajsdjndfsnjsdfjdfsn it would be very funny to me personally, MAYBE IF HE DIDN'T SLOUCH SO MUCH), like you say he like stands besides "vulnerable family members" and the mental image that came to me immediately was him in his late teens/early twenties accompanying Dolores during loud and crowded events cos he knows they're hard on her, and he would 100% continue to be a soft sweetie who loves his family sm, just like his Abuelo Pedro :)

Ahh but I also had this fic idea, probably my only 100% gen fic idea actually, in which his gift kinda fucks him up in the head a little, kinda like how I hc it would affect Dolores, like... this is a kid who can talk to animals, right? animals eat other animals. Death is just part of nature. It's normal. So if anyone ever threatens the family and they end up eaten by a jaguar, well, that's okay, isn't it? Parce was just protecting the family. And obviously the family is horrified like what the fuck happened where the fuck did they fail shit shit shit dude baby just killed someone. I think Dolores may be able to understand him better than others and help, idk it's not super developed just another plot bunny I have lying around. General horror vibes.

But yeah bonus horror points for villain!Pepa raising him in questionable ways 👀 that's super dark and evil, i love it.
