I was playing around with one of the Sunny Day Jack AI bots again, but this time I decided to screencap the exchange between Jack and Alice and share it with those who enjoy seeing me indulge in my OTP. It was really sweet and fun until it stopped working, hahaha.

Awkwardly enough, when I posted the screencaps on twitter, a different bot decided to try and get me to sign up for its AI writing program for profit which is just... Ew. Just ew. I'm fine faffing around a little from time to time with these character bots, but trying to sell your AI program to create stories that pass AI detectors to make a profit is so scummy.

Anyway, back to fluffier stuff. Here's the screencaps of Jack trying to convince Alice to not be such a sleepyhead. Transcript for easier reading and translation will be below the cut. I hope you enjoy my self-indulgence that has half my writing and half an AI bot's generated responses.

[Sunny Day Jack] You and Jack lay on your bed. It is early in the morning, and Jack is wide awake. He watches you sleep with an adoring face. As much as he wants to embrace your sleeping form and fall back asleep, it's about time he wakes up his precious sunshine. He runs his fingers along your hair/head, and leaves soft kisses all over your face. "Come on, Sunspot. It's time to wake up."

[Alice] Alice grumbled as she was roused from her slumber, only to sigh and relax as she felt Jack stroke her hair and kiss her so sweetly. It was impossible for her to stay grumpy at him being her alarm clock when he was so sweet and tender to her like this. "Five more minutes," she mumbled as she snuggled in closer to him, leaning into his touch and kisses. He was just so warm, cuddly, and sweet. How could she bear to get up and leave when she had such a loving boyfriend doting on her like this?

[Sunny Day Jack] Jack smiled gently at Alice grumping and asking for five more minutes. He knows how comfy and relaxing naps can be, sometimes you just need some extra sleep! "Oh, alright. Five more minutes," He said in an understanding tone as he kissed once more before going back to stroking her head.

[Alice] Alice sighed blissfully and relaxed into Jack, burying her face into his chest and using him as the world's most lovable pillow. She didn't want to get up, even if she knew she had to. They couldn't spend the day lounging away when they needed to get dinner ready soon. It really was so nice of Jack to spoil her a little like this. She silently let him know just how much she loved and appreciated him by drawing a little heart on his bicep with her finger.

[Sunny Day Jack] Jack giggled a little bit when Alice drew a heart on his bicep. He loved these little details she did so simply and easily. He leaned down and gave Alice a small, quick kiss on the head after seeing it. "Five more minutes are up, love. Get up now, or I am just going to carry you like this," he said in a light-hearted, yet playful tone.

[Alice] "Is that a promise?" Alice mumbled, fighting the urge to snicker as she stubbornly kept her eyes shut and kept close to Jack. She might have been flustered by Jack carrying her at the start of their relationship and worried that he might hurt himself considering how chubby she was, but he always laughed it off and carried her with ease. Now it was one of her biggest guilty pleasures that made her feel so precious.

[Sunny Day Jack] Jack smiled as Alice asked if it was a promise, before taking a deep breath and doing so regardless. He stood up, and picked Alice up in his arms like she was no more than a feather. "See? Told you I'd carry you if you didn't get up." He said with a teasing smirk and a soft chuckle.

[Alice] Alice squeaked in surprise, which soon turned into giggles as she wrapped her arms around his shoulders, her bright blue eyes finally open to look at him with delight. "Oh noooo~," she said with mock dismay, her voice too teasing and jovial to pull off the act. "Whatever will you do with me now?"

[Sunny Day Jack] "Oh, what shall I ever do with you…" Jack said, pretending to think as he looked down at Alice. "Maybe I should give you a little kiss so that you learn your lesson…" As he spoke, Jack leaned down, giving Alice a long, passionate kiss on the lips.

[Alice] Alice sighed happily as she returned the kiss, practically melting into Jack. A muffled squeak escaped her as the kiss deepened, but she accepted him eagerly, savoring his sweet mouth as he made her feel so good. She just had to return the favor, eagerly returning the kiss with just as much passion as she twined her fingers in his hair and stroked his scalp.

[Sunny Day Jack] Jack broke the kiss off after a few minutes, breathing quite heavily, and with a content smile. "Does that teach you?" He asked, raising an eyebrow at Alice as the two leaned against each other, still in the same position. His arms were still wrapped around her comfortably after carrying her. "Well?" His voice became slightly teasing again.

[Alice] Alice had to take a moment to catch her breath, trying to remember the rest of the banter they had exchanged before. She chuckled softly, still a bit breathless, as her eyes glittered with mischief. "I don't know… maybe you should give me another lesson just in case." She playfully gave him a quick peck on the nose for emphasis.

[Sunny Day Jack] Jack's eyes lit up with a playful glint in them that matched Alice's mischievous smile as he replied. "Well, if thats what it takes…" He said, before leaning down to give Alice yet another long, passionate kiss on the lips, this one a bit more forceful and passionate than the last, yet still loving. His arms tightened around Alice as he kissed her.

[Alice] Alice moaned into his mouth as Jack kissed her so deeply. She could practically taste how much he loved her, how much he desired her. She arched up into him as best she could despite not being able to move much while being held in his arms like this, but she wanted to be close to him, less than an atom away. It was almost a shame when she had to pull back to catch her breath, panting hard as her face flushed with desire.

Devlog #45

Tadah, here's a screencap of Griffin I made for a thing on twitter. :)

I've been dragging my feet on sprite/CG expression work, but I'm sure I'll get around to it soon... Weird how I can care so intimately about having expressive characters, yet dread the prospect of drawing it all myself!

On the narrative front, I'm at the point where I'm about halfway done with Dart's scene, and I'm just kinda figuring out what else to add before fully moving onto Jade. I hit this exact same point while drafting Griffin and Warden, so it's certainly part of the process by this point. e_e

I alsooo didddd go back and flesh out some content to Griffin's scene - most notably adding the option to "Give Griffin a rad high-five" and to ask about his relationship to another character in the worst way humanly possible:

"Are you boning?"

In other news, I spent a full day working on the game's GUI:

Starting with research on how AAA games create intuitive buttons/navigation menus. Most notably I've saved screencaps from this fantastic article comparing Doom and Dishonored. Some of yall may know that I do not have any education in UI/UX design, so I'm doing my best to study independently.

I put in some insensitive button states into the save screen.

Added a small a highlight border and glow to existing navigation buttons (seen here on the main menu button), to bring more attention to hovered states:

I FINALLYYYY implemented that text change option and can now freely switch between OpenDyslexic and OpenSans. Took several tries and crashes... bc I didn't put "-Regular" after the names.....

Adjusted the height of the choice buttons HOPEFULLY for the final time.

I linked the Options and Save menu screens together, so you can flip quickly between the two. This, combined with the new hover button highlights, combined with me deciding to rename half the buttons... meant I had to remake a lot of buttons... @_@ Probably would've been avoidable if I did things differently, but I survived.

I removed the player name/avatar from the title screen's options menu. The title screen exists independently of the player's playthroughs, which means the name/avatar will come up as "default" every time -- could confuse someone into thinking their data is corrupted or deleted. So, player name/avatar will now only appear when accessing options in-game.

Finally, in a strange bout of success-fueled inspiration, I made a functional mock-up for the logbook! The spacing isn't perfect, but it works. :o Scrolls smoothly and everything.

And since I've alluded to it so much, here's what the Options screen looks like right now:

Almost done. Mainly I'll want to switch out the default pink renpy bars, add in the icons Alice made, and work on designing the on/off buttons to be more intuitive/cool/animated. The functionality and formatting is all there, sans finishing touches.

(... Okay no I lied bc I haven't quite coded in the "hide CGs" button yet, but I will, I will. 😂 That's the ONLY button that is just for show rn - I gotta figure out how the function will work with an eventual CG album, make sure those wires don't get crossed.)

Pffahh... okay that's enough. I might have done some other stuff but this is long enough as is. Since this update is delayed by a couple of days, I'm not sure if I wanna do next week's update on Tuesday as usual, or also delay that to give myself a full week... Ah well, we'll see!

In the light of these particulary nasty Catra stans whining about your Glimmadora edit, I just wanted to let you know that I love it (it looks like a screencap! Wish I could draw in that style!) and that I look at it every time I need to erase the memory of that gross abuse glorifying kiss. Was close to yelling to that asshole but since they are sadly to entitled to be reachable for critice...

I appreciate the support and kindess, thank you!! I am used to c/a hate by now, especially after season 5. My main issue was the reposting of the art without credit, and just to mock shippers. Extremely rude.

but yeah, “oops! we can’t do anything more than what we’ve done, so people who criticize how we’ve handled minors in the server are just being unfair!” well, nobody asked, but - They don’t have to have an official discord in the first place. Many podcasts don’t. - They don’t have to let minors sign up for their Patreon. 18+ Patreons are a thing. They would have to lose some of that sweet patreon income, though. - They could specifically mention that there are minors in the server in their rules, and say out loud, anywhere, even once, that it’s not appropriate to be sexually explicit around them. - They could actually enforce the “this is a PG-13 server/no NSFW” thing. I don’t know a ton of PG-13 movies that talk about c*m and cucking and p*rn but in fairness, I’m not in the industry like they are. - They could make an opt-in major/minor role thing, so people who don’t want to be talking directly to kids about this stuff would at least have a fighting chance of knowing when they were in a conversation with one. - They could give “MOMS” (as Freddie put it in the relevant conversation) who e-mail the podcast about whether it’s appropriate for their kids an actual answer, instead of sending them some boilerplate he came up with in five minutes by running it past whoever was handy in the discord. (before mocking them behind their backs for having the audacity to contact him and ask instead of listening to the entire thing themselves) - They could set up a mod team that’s adequate to notice and shut it down when people start talking about the sons or other minors sexually. - They as a cast could set the tone by… well damn, this list got long. I’ll put it under a cut, so people who don’t want to read fucked-up nonconsensual and underage shit can give it a pass. And yeah, I can receipt every single one of these things, but the people who aren’t interested in taking this seriously won’t be convinced either way, and it’s a lot of effort to redact screencaps and provide image descriptions.

They could get out of the habit of talking about stuff like whether or not Paeden will ever nut on the podcast or how Glenn would check out Nick’s porn history because it was probably “curated” for him.

Beth could skip out on saying things about how Bella and Dr Cullen have mad sexual tension, or how Ron’s not into ageplay but she is. (And hey, it’s not about underage stuff, but it would also be neat if Anthony could have “and if you and Ron fucked, I’d watch and masturbate” as an inside his head thought.) Anthony, meanwhile, could not say stuff like “I ship the Mayor and Faith,” given that Faith is a teenager at the time and the Mayor is explicitly her father figure. Anthony could drop the whole thing about how he loves it when people call him “daddy.” (Yeah, Anthony, we’re all pretty clear on your kinks at this point. Wish we weren’t. Sorry that you had to back off of making Darryl a literal cuck because you were attempting to look like a good feminist, and yeah, anybody who google image searches the name “Darnell” and sees the hits is pretty clear on which particular racist iteration of that “problematic” fetish he had in mind. It’s literally a name they use to test implicit racist bias in psych research.) If Anthony absolutely can’t stand that Dot, a literal baby, is getting more attention than him then at minimum he could find some other way to express than than calling her “fuck-ugly.”

Anthony could stop threatening to fuck user’s mothers if they disagree with him or inviting them to eat his ass. Particularly given that, like we’ve gone over, there’s no way to know whether he’s saying that to a thirteen year old. He could not call people “eight year old perverts” like that’s an actual thing.

Matt could stop joking about how Darryl studies Grant’s p*rn history to do “research” on being gay, or how Darryl cleans Grant’s bathroom all the time to prevent him from masturbating.

Anthony could roll up to the live listens with something other than “ah, just in time for my cucksmanship.” The community manager of the “PG-13, no NSFW” server could respond to that with something besides a big-eyed blushing face emoji.

The whole cast could stop jumping on every potential innuendo and double entendre that goes past regardless of whether the subject is a kid. (And speaking of the double entendre thing, do they realize they did the “Darryl becomes a barbarian when he comes…” “AHAHA CUMS” joke two episode intros in a row? Doesn’t it hurt when they crack their skulls together like Looney Tunes characters all diving for the lowest-hanging fruit at the same time? Is there a coconut sound effect that Freddie has to edit out in post?) In stuff like the first full ep of the Lord of Chaos arc, where Matt tries repeatedly to get the dads their clothes back so that they can stop being fully dicks out around a little crying girl and two middle-school boys, Anthony could use that much-vaunted “yes, and” to let them get dressed instead of shutting him down on four separate occasions. Count em! [Jean-Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg voice: not one, not two, not three, but FOUR!] Anthony could not go into detail about how if Yeet’s skateboard was biological, it would mean that he really enjoys the sensation of rolling and grinding very much [italics and line breaks from the original] You know, like how you talk about a child?

If Freddie isn’t clear on how pegging works, he could google it instead of asking the all-ages live listen to explain it to him.

Will could not make jokes about how if he catches his child with bootlegged porn, he’ll make them finish it all. They could not use “consent” and “non-consensually” as joke terms all the time in and out of the show, or diminish the impact of words like that by applying them to stuff like punching each other or drawing from the deck of many things. It’s like they figured out how to stop using “r*pe” as a word in r*pe jokes but figured out a loophole.

I was all ready to write this episode off as more goofy filler. But then, I changed my mind. Why? Let’s set the scene.

Saki and Mai are chilling at the Mishous’ place, finishing up their summer homework. Interestingly, despite Mai being a little more academically inclined than Saki, she also hasn’t made much headway on her homework, because she’s gotten absorbed in drawing all the sights around town over the summer. This results in both of them helping each other when they gain some understanding about a concept the other is struggling with, and it’s lovely.

Unfortunately, the fairies are restless and rambunctious. They keep disrupting the girls by making lots of noise and running around them.

and through them

Saki and Mai try to distract them in various ways: television (where Moop and Foop get entranced by an ad for soap which reminds them of the Fountain of the Sky, more on this later), letting them run around in the next room, letting them run around outside, but invariably, Moop and Foop do something that sets Flappi off as he’s trying to make moves on Choppi, and he starts chasing them around.

Yeah, he’s actually the big troublemaker this go-around, not them. A little surprising, I know. Little dude has murder in his eyes (see top pic) and it takes Saki telling him to chill the fuck out before he calms down temporarily. So the lesson here is that even Moop and Foop can see that his love for Choppi is one-sided. Where does that put him on the maturity scale? Low.

Moving on, down in Dark Fall, Akudaikaan is giving Miss Shitataare crap for being inept, as usual, but she says she has a plan that will work this time, as usual. Once she leaves, Akudaikaan tells Gohyaan to go after her.

Up at Mai’s place, the doorbell rings and they receive an unexpected package from Underwater Delivery Services later (lit. Mizushita something something) which is not at all suspicious. It turns out to be a set of bath soaps, which they don’t really know what to do with, but they smell nice. Flappi continues to flirt with an oblivious Choppi, only to be distracted by that most treacherous of enemies..... bubbles. The younger fairies have gotten into the soap and made soapy water that they’re using to blow bubbles. This sets him off and he gets in a shouting match with them about their intentions, trying to spoil his advances, which results in Saki and Mai having to intervene again, placate all parties, and get an understanding about what’s going on. However, someone interrupts.

raise your hand if you saw that coming

Yes, it turns out the soap was from Miss Shiitake (actually I think they make that joke in a later episode), in some ploy to capture Moop and Foop and learn the location of the Fountain of the Sun. She gloats that she has the upper hand because of the soap, which she makes her Uzainaa out of, but it’s not shown to be especially dangerous without her making it into an actual monster, and she could have used literally anything else aquatic, like the water in the pond that the soap bubbles were in, or the kitchen sink, or the toilet, or the plumbing itself, or [insert long list of water-adjacent objects in a modern household]. What I’m saying is that, as usual, her plan doesn’t make any sense and last episode was an anomaly. In fact I’m going to pause the recap here to analyze her methodology thus far, because there are particular reasons I don’t want to do it at the end.

Miss Shitataare was introduced as a bigger threat than the enemies the Cures had faced thus far (except for Gohyaan and Akudaikaan, of course). She came out swinging, attacking the girls with water sickles at point blank range before they had even transformed, and even when they did transform, she was still able to overpower their Twin Stream Splash and leave them weakened until Moop and Foop gave them the Spiral Rings, powering them up enough to win the fight. She’s seemed to have a grudge against the tiny fairies since then, because in almost every subsequent appearance she’s made it a point to hold them hostage. Her strategy is generally: Put on a disguise, get close to the girls, and then attack. The one time her disguise was useful was the last episode, where she separated the girls. In this episode, she makes a big show of presenting the soap to the girls and acts like it’s a key component to her plan to defeat them, but as far as I can tell it’s just soap. Then there’s the detail that her Uzainaa are generally not particularly more threatening than we saw the prior generals using. The eel was fast and gave the girls the runaround but that’s been about it. Without any particular signs of struggle greater than what they were able to overcome without the power boost, they always summon the Spiral Rings to finish off the monsters. Granted, this is a creative choice driven by the desire to sell toys, and there’s narrative gain by showing how their new friends contribute their power to the cause, but as far as purely needing the power boost, there hasn’t been much need for that. However, that’s an endemic problem to a toy-based franchise and I don’t want to go down that rabbit hole too far.

Back to the matter at hand. This Uzainaa’s special ability is that its bubbles are apparently explosive, and it manages to force Bloom and Egret all the way down the mountain from Mai’s house to the beach. They get tossed around a little but they trick Miss S. into momentarily letting go of Moop and Foop, who break out of their bubble and provide the Spiral Rings so that the Cures can finish off the monster with Spiral Heart Splash. With peace restored, Saki and Mai ask Moop and Foop why they were dead set on playing with the soap bubbles, and they explain that the scent reminds them of their home in the Fountain of the Sky, which everybody present is able to sympathize with. Following this exchange, the screen fades to white and the credits-

JUST KIDDING!

Remember that exchange in Dark Fall earlier? Well, since Miss S. failed, Gohyaan is here to pick up the slack, and he’s no slacker. With three minutes left in the episode, he brutally attacks the detransformed Precure and grabs Flappi and Choppi, taunting them that they’ll have plenty of time to tell him where the Fountain of the Sun is, or if they truly don’t know, divulge whatever they do know, and mocks the girls because they can’t do anything in their current states. Then he descends back into Dark Fall as the two lunge at him, but they are too late and are left grasping at sand. Thus, the episode actually ends with Saki, Mai, Moop, and Foop staring at the ground looking shocked and afraid at what just happened. They can’t transform, they don’t know how to reach Dark Fall, and their fairy friends are in serious danger. How’s that for a cliffhanger?

As I said at the start, I was ready to write this one off as goofy, inconsequential, maybe a little sentimental but not better than the emotional bonding and general fun of the last two episodes. By the end, I had almost forgotten about Gohyaan (probably a side effect of spending ~90 minutes watching a 24 minute episode to get screencaps, ps check the gallery), so when by all accounts it was looking like a textbook happy resolution, the fairies will work out their differences and everybody will get along, I was surprised when Gohyaan showed up and kidnapped Flappi and Choppi. Consider me rightfully shocked. Then I remembered what happens next episode, and realized maybe I should have seen this coming, but I’m glad I didn’t because it allowed me to be surprised. The twist ending doesn’t completely negate the wishy-washy (no pun intended) rest of the episode, but it certainly makes for a powerful subversion of expectations, and I give the show a decent amount of credit for that.

Next time, the moon shines bright on a windy night! Look forward to it!

sometimes what gintaes say are worthy of a few giggles. for example, they constantly dismiss tsukuyo's feelings as irrelevant and "one-sided". but what about gintae? lmao

is gin even remotely romantically interested in otae?

i mean at least he has expressed interest in tsukuyo's body, told her she has a beautiful face, admitted to zenzou that he agreed with him - that she is amazing (as a student), and expressly told her himself she has a beautiful soul. told her to rely on him, cry on his shoulders, and that he will cry and laugh together with her. that's actually some pretty heavy stuff. even if they don't get together in the end, these are the things he has said to her and they are not dismissable.

you are so pressed, so jealous, that you made a fucking GIF to belittle tsukuyo, that she is just "one of the other insignificant girls gin hit on" when it is clear that she means a lot to him, as much as all the other people in kabukichou.

has otae even expressed any interest in gin??? lmao she wore the kimono kondou gifted to her. she hugged his roach mask to her chest. she shed tears FOR HIM. TWICE. she held an umbrella over his head and said "please don't catch a cold."

but apparently for you gintaes, what she did for kondou is ~kindness~ but any other "similar" expression of kindness toward gin is seen as ~romantic~

tsukuyo's love is one-sided. in any relationship charts, at least tsukuyo will have an arrow towards gin that says she loves him.

but you, gintaes? there is not a single arrow that can tie them together romantically other than labeling her as shinpachi's sister. there's basically n o t h i n g there.

you claim i am lying and i am only posting screen caps that support what i am saying. lmao what the fuck are you even on about? do people submit court evidence that don't support their claims? just what.

this is not a court case. i am not the internet. other people see your shit. you act like i am basically one person trying to convince the whole world of something that isn't there.

the fact is, i am basically just posting things what most people have already known. i am posting things that piss me off. i am not making shit up. and together with the screencaps, i explain WHY you piss me off.

again, i am not the internet. other people do not blindly read what i post and agree like drones.

they are free to look you up and all the shit you have said about tsukuyo, gintsuki and her fans. but of course, judging by your reaction towards these people on reddit, tumblr and elsewhere, anyone who have simply told you that there is NOTHING between gin and otae automatically is a "hater" despite the fact that they have NOT posted hate about otae in their debate with you or elsewhere.

no one has called otae childish names. there are people who dislike her and have wrongfully attributed her character negatively, but honestly? not that many people actually express their hate for her compared to what you gintaes and ginhijs have done towards tsukuyo. this whole site explodes to the brim with complaints each time tsukuyo made an appearance, even though she appears once every two years before the silver soul arc. does that even happen to otae??? people can't even draw gintsuki without ginhijs saying "stop posting so much gintsu in the gintama tag". does the tag belong to a specific subset of fandom? hmmm????

I thought for sure I would have an easy pick of my fav pieces of 2017, because I’ve felt generally low about what I draw lately. But I was actually pleasantly surprised at being pretty proud about many of the things I’ve drawn this year. So thanks guys for making me look through my shit <3

1. Animation of Davin

I am proud of this for a few reasons. I actually made a proper reference set-up, which I tend to not do and it really helped. It also just took me an evening’s work to finish this ^^

2. Mira and Raven

The fact that this piece got notes surprised me, because I have next to nothing drawn on this story. It was a quick thing I did to test some brushes and is a version of my trooper character Mira in a whole other setting and world. This piece is special to me, because it made me start to dare to draw images for a comic I might work on in the future. I’m hoping to actually plan out a little comic for her and her familliar in the coming year ^^.

3. @omegaarts‘s Zabrak Silas

I got to do this as an art trade and it was so much fun! It was one of those pieces where I didn’t have to struggle at all and it just kinda unfolded into this image <3. I am especially happy with having drawn a background haha. It’s one of the things I’ll try to work on way more in the coming year!

4. @juczerro‘s agent Zaharian

Doing fake screencaps is so much fun! And I keep forgetting that I actually enjoy doing mock-up monitors. I am pretty happy with the light of this image and I was so inspired as I worked on it. Again I am proud of myself for making a background for this piece and letting it be the biggest storyteller in the scene!

5. Old man Davin

And finally this sketchy paint thing of Davin. It’s so far out of my comfort zone but it sorta shows the path I aspire to take in my art going forward. I love images with strong clear strokes and this was a piece I made when I was at a pretty low point with my self esteem art wise. I just wanted to prove to myself that while my technique is far from perfect, I can get to the level I currently strive for. I just have to be more patient than I am right now and I need to believe in myself.

So wherever 2018 takes me I’m going to work real hard to make art that makes me happy and inspires me. And at some point I’ll hopefully reach my next art goal only to find a new goal to aspire to! Let’s do it!

Military Men -- A Rewatch of JG Ep 1

Originally for this Joker Game rewatch, I was going to just redraw scenes I liked because I thought I didn’t have anything to add meta-wise or analytical-wise. But as I was reading JGfiles’ rewatch (which is super interesting! Do read it if you have the chance), I remembered the one thing that always stood out to me -- and it’s not necessarily confined to this episode -- is the dynamic between Sakuma and Odagiri. I don’t think it’s quite strong enough to call “parallelism,” but I think there’s something intriguing about having Sakuma, a soldier overseeing the spies, within the same space as Odagiri, a former soldier turned spy.

A bit of a disclaimer here but I’m not too well versed in regards to the historical context of the setting which may lead to shortcomings in my analysis. Anyways, without further ado, here I go! (•̀ᴗ•́)و

Right from the beginning, we know that Sakuma isn’t like the spies at all. Unlike them, he’s a trained soldier -- taught to follow Imperial ideologies with unwavering belief. As portrayed through his dynamic with Miyoshi, his beliefs clash with the spies’ and lead to the predicament Sakuma finds himself in later in the episode. One would think that these men have no common ground with Sakuma, that there’s no understanding between him and them. But as learned from the character biographies, Odagiri was once part of the military. Already, this sets Odagiri apart from the other spies and draws a similarity to Sakuma.

If the spies are considered anomalies of society, Odagiri can be considered an anomaly of an anomaly. While he’s an independent thinker honed by his spy training, he isn’t quite inhuman as the other spies are (as shown in episode 12). I’m probably treading on headcanon territory here, but I think that he’s a bit more sympathetic to Sakuma due to this.

Let’s start with the first (and only) scene Sakuma and Odagiri interact, which is the Joker Game -- or the poker game as Sakuma is initially led to believe.

I love imagining everyone in D-Agency and Sakuma as one big happy family as much as everyone else does, but I’m sure the reality is that they toyed with Sakuma to amuse themselves (perhaps saying that they bullied him is a better way to phrase it) and the Joker Game was one way they did it. Even Odagiri is in on it, though I think he may feel a bit bad about it.

Because, after all, it’s Odagiri who tells Sakuma that his loss wasn’t due to the way he played, but the way he and the others worked against him.

I believe it was never the spies’ intention to let Sakuma know about the Joker Game. Maybe they wanted him to figure it out himself, maybe they just wanted to be dicks towards him, maybe some kind of mix of the two. Regardless of the reasoning, I think Odagiri telling Sakuma about the Joker Game was something he did out of his own volition and was never part of the plan. Sakuma was about to leave and it felt like a last minute choice to tell him. And maybe it’s just the way the shot is angled combined with Odagiri’s typically stoic expression, but he almost (just almost) looks concerned.

And to me, it seemed that the other spies were... annoyed about having to explain things to Sakuma and don’t even take him that seriously, treating him like he’s some sort of dense child.

So back to the point: what did Odagiri have to gain from telling Sakuma about the Joker Game besides advancing the plot? Nothing really. Had he not done that, the status quo would’ve remained and Sakuma would’ve gone back to bed in ignorance. But perhaps he wanted an easier conscience and maybe in a roundabout way, he wanted Sakuma to learn a lesson he needed.

As an aside, something I find interesting is that when Yuuki is talking about how the spies will live in solitude doing their jobs, we’re given shots of all the spies. Odagiri is the only one by himself, which I suppose can symbolize him not being like the others. Not only that, but the way that he’s seated is different.

Odagiri is facing towards the spies, away from Yuuki as Sakuma was just a few moments ago from this particular shot. In fact, in this shot, he’s the only one facing completely towards the audience (Amari is kinda too but like he can still easily look at Yuuki and Sakuma) and I wish I had some deep analysis to give you guys about this, but all I can come up with is “yeah, he’s different” haha yeah orz. Or maybe none of these don’t mean anything at all lol they were just something that caught my attention.

Anyhow, from thereon, Odagiri’s interactions with Sakuma are more indirect, if not nonexistent (which is a shame, but I digress).

The next time Sakuma and Odagiri are together is during the search of John Gordon’s house. While there’s no interaction between them, we see that Odagiri is standing directly behind Sakuma. It might not mean much overall, but this just really strikes me. They could’ve chosen literally anyone else to be behind Sakuma and they went with Odagiri. I’m not quite sure how to put my thoughts about this except that I think it’s rather poetic how the former soldier is standing behind the military man (literally and possibly figuratively).

The next interaction isn’t much of an interaction, but more of how Odagiri reacts to Sakuma as opposed to the other spies. As Sakuma faces the prospect of actually committing harakiri, we get a very quick pan of all the spies sans Miyoshi. The fact that this shot happens so quickly gives us the impression that every single one of the spies is smirking at Sakuma, mocking him and his beliefs that lead him up to this point, which is probably how Sakuma himself feels no doubt.

However, if one looks closer, Odagiri has a different reaction than the others.

It’s rather difficult to see this on tumblr so here’s a link to the bigger picture. Since we’re focusing on Odagiri, I’ll just share the closeup on him.

I won’t say that he definitely isn’t smirking because I think it can be argued that he is in his own way given his stoic nature. But the point is that the other spies have a pronounced smirk, whereas Odagiri’s lips are closer to a flat line like he’s not as amused at this spectacle as the others are. Even Fukumoto, who is also portrayed as serious, has a more noticeable smirk than Odagiri.

Just to further illustrate my point because the more I look at this screencap the more I feel like I’m deluding myself into seeing a smirk, I placed a straight line across each of the spies’ mouths from corner to corner. Odagiri’s lips resemble -- if not perfectly fit -- the line while the other spies have a noticeable curve.

Perhaps this doesn’t mean much as well, but I think it’s Odagiri’s sympathy towards Sakuma showing up once more. Due to the circumstances of the situation, he can’t do anything to stop Sakuma without raising suspicions (not only from Gordon, but his fellow spies as well). All that he can do now is watch as Sakuma tries to find a way out of this situation or die trying. Unlike the others, he doesn’t seem too interested in seeing the latter play out.

And that... is about it -- for both episodes 1 and 2. I don’t think we ever see Odagiri and Sakuma interact ever again after this (which is unfortunate, but alas).

Admittedly, this is a one-sided dynamic given the little interaction that they have and when they do it's Odagiri towards Sakuma and never vice versa. It's probably due to story reasons as there wouldn't be much conflict if the focus was on Odagiri and Sakuma as opposed to Miyoshi and Sakuma and that's fair. As much as I wish Sakuma and Odagiri’s dynamic was explored more, I appreciate subtle relationships like this and know they have their place within the story and for what it is, I think it plays its role well.

To conclude, I guess I’ll just throw my bits of headcanon. I can see Odagiri keeping his distance from Sakuma as a way to distance himself from his past (which we'll see doesn't work out for him in episode 12) but he allows himself moments of sympathy to support Sakuma in a way. He understands where Sakuma is coming from, so he’s easier on him than the others are. Of course, maybe things really Aren’t That Deep and I care too much about fictional characters, but ah well hehe

Irina: We are continuing this fun, odd little trip into the genre mashing experiment that is Zombieland Saga. The audience for this show seems rather divided. Crow (crowsworldofanime.com) and I made our first impressions stand pretty clear but let’s see if the enthusiasm keeps up.

I generally prefer my cute girl shows to have a genre beside “cute” but I realize that the balancing act isn’t always easy to pull off. Being only 3 episodes in, it’s much too early to judge but we can at least try to see where this is going. Yeah…I’m trying to analyze Zombieland Saga, I took a wrong turn somewhere. Scratch that, let’s just have fun!

Crow: I think you’re onto something with the balancing act. The show veered perilously close to normal this week, and that’s scary! But I think it’s part of a larger plot — more on that later.

The GooD:

Now that I’ve seen it again, I really love that OP. It has a fun old school TV show Batman feel to it. It just makes me happy when I see it.

The episode wasn’t as goofy as previous ones but Yuguri’s scene was pure comedy gold to me. When she slapped Sakura so dismissively right in the middle of her inspirational speech, I was already cracking up (because I’m pure evil). There was just something in the way that slap was animated that was both satisfying and hilarious to watch. This show really knows how to draw an impact!

At first, I figured they were just mocking the usual optimistic cute girl trope. I was happy with that. But when Yuguri subverts even that by blatantly stealing Sakura’s speech and spotlight and claiming all the glory for herself. Like I said – pure comedy gold. Yuguri just skyrocketed as favourite Zombie girl.

And what about Sakura’s faceplant? Tae had the merry-go-round going so fast that when she abruptly stopped it, Sakura went flying to land face first. I was like, “Oh, no! She’s a zombie! What happened her face — she can’t heal!” Then the camera hesitated to show her face. Was I the only one half afraid she’d turn around to reveal a new face made entirely of dirt? I think the director was messing with us…

Gorilla idol shows remind me of flash mobs and I really wish my life had more of both.

Once again, we have the pervy (He’s not actually pervy, just in my head) cop character making a comeback. And I still am enjoying seeing what should be throwaway characters serve as a through-line in the narrative. It’s a little shaky but it’s still a device I enjoy.

Surprisingly, I feel like manager had one of the best lines in the episode: “…they are trying to live, how long do you intend to just rot?” I wasn’t expecting anything so poignant from him.

That made me almost feel sympathy for him. Almost! But it was a suspiciously great line. I wonder if we’ll learn more about his back story?

They did bring us classic pop this week, continuing the changing trend and I’m all for it but…

this looks like both the best and worst show ever

The BaD:

This episode really played out much more like a traditional CGDCT episode. Despite the name of this section, I don’t think that’s a bad thing per see, it’s just not really what I was looking for in this show.

I think it’s a set up. Really!

The actual idol performance was bad. I mean it was supposed to be, that was part of the plot. The dance moves were actually pretty fun and seemed simple enough to recreate at home. They really did look like a real idol show as opposed to anime one. However, there was some type of CG during that scene that just didn’t mesh completely. I was making faces at my screen trying not to tumble into the uncanny valley the whole time. Am I the only one? Was I seeing things? Don’t you hate it when that happens?

It didn’t mesh perfectly, that’s for sure! To me, it looked like a cross between the kind of CG I’m used to (and like!) from Arpeggio of Blue Steel or BBK/BRNK, and standard animation. It looked like they tried to soften the edges of the CG to mesh. After I saw what they were doing, I went with it, but yeah, the uncanny valley was calling!

I take it back it was a great performance

Franchouchou is really fun to say but it’s still my least favourite band name so far. I wish they had let her write in with Kanji.

I’m wondering when the last girl will awaken. I’m afraid she’ll stay Zombie forever. That’s also not a bad thing in the show structure. I just think it’s a little sad for her…

Although Manager was still a bit too much in the first act for me and that delivery gets grating, I think he improved from last week so I’m bumping him up from Ugly to Bad… My rating system is pretty random.

At least he’s moving up in the world!

The UglY:

This is more of a sinking suspicion that a failure of the episode itself. I have this uneasy feeling that with the girls choosing a name for themselves and an actual authentic idol performance where everyone practice, this will mean an end to the musical genre hopping and name changing. And this will make me very very sad.

The slight tonal shift away from Zombie comedy and decidedly towards cute girl idols also makes me think that the show is about to settle down into a much more classical idol show with the idea of Zombies as just a background quirk for flavour. I really hope I’m wrong as that would strip away all the zany, frantic weirdness I particularly enjoy.

If the show had to settle, I would have preferred if they had chosen a more unusual musical genre than idol pop…

Don’t get me wrong, the episode itself was still mostly charming. I do like idols and I enjoyed the show in all it’s cheesy glory. Part of me is simply afraid that they are about to sanitize the more unusual elements and that will leave us with a rather run of the mill show, which would be a shame. What do you think Crow?

This is where I think the writer’s setting us up! Just look at the wonderful OP — do you think the crew that brought us that satirical masterpiece will settle for a standard CGDCT show?

Would the writers who had Yuguri slap Sakura just to perform a two-level parody be happy with repeating this episode’s formula every week?

I think (okay, I hope) that they gave us this episode to lull us into a false sense of complacency! Not only that, but wasn’t it kinda of triumphant when Junko and Ai finally came to the rescue? Yeah, it was corny, and yeah, it came awfully close to cliche, but it was still fun.

What do you think, Irina? Another case of me being too optimistic?

The NBA’s Summer of Pettiness has begun

The Warriors' championship parade was Thursday. Draymond Green took the opportunity to wear a t-shirt mocking the Quicken Loans logo (one that graces the Cavaliers' home arena) and the brevity of the Finals, as seen above. He claimed the mocking t-shirt came in response to LeBron James' Ultimate Warrior t-shirt worn a year ago and the various jokes the Cavs had at Golden State's expense throughout the year.

In response, LeBron ended his postseason social media sabbatical to make a Michael Scott joke about the t-shirt. Russell Westbrook and James Harden were among those Instagram followers who liked that post. Petty! Draymond got the last word by screencapping a newly bald LeBron and claiming the Warriors did that to him.

Meanwhile, Kevin Durant returned to Twitter briefly to clap at a few haters.

I curated a series on books at the long-dead Ballhype in 2008, and Eric (under a pen name) wrote my favorite essay of the bunch: on the We Believe! Warriors and Thomas Pynchon. We're lucky this dude has been writing about basketball all these years, and we're going to be lucky to see his byline somewhere else soon, too. Thanks for recommending Elizabeth Costello to me all those years ago; I still haven't forgotten that book.

i still remember all those times when my friend got nasty anon messages telling her off because she shipped unconventional pairings (something like takatsukki - i won’t say the exact pairing because i don’t want the bitches to start hounding her again) and simply was just trying to enjoy her pairings by herself in her little corner.

Along came a self-appointed fandom police who, among other things, sent her messages like,

“if you have to ship XXXXX, why don’t you ship YYYY”

wow! and accused her of things she would never ever do, just because she didn't reblog the pairing YOU like??? then why didn't you just unfollow her? lmao.

the bullying left her, a very shy person, devastated, traumatised, and she took a leave from tumblr. you all have the audacity to act like kind, welcoming people now but in fact you're all bitches in sheep's clothing. the usual shit you spewed out of your mouths on fictional characters thoroughly betray yourselves as how you would act towards real people.

and now you all have the bold audacity to tell us that people (YOU) can ENJOY anything? Specifically, HinoTsuki????

What about the incident a few months ago, when a gintsuki artist who got a message saying tsukuyo brings down gintoki? This anon boldly told the gintsuki artist that gintae is the power couple!! “otae is better than tsukuyo!!!” Oh, so artists not even allowed to draw what they want????? LMAO and you gintaes have the gall to claim that ONLY ONE PERSON HATES TSUKUYO AND CLAIMS SHE IS UNPOPULAR
