thinking about how, as a child, kaz’s favorite trick seemed to be watching something disappear, and then he grew up and fell in love with a girl who could vanish into thin air, and how we’re told that when he looks at inej, he feels like a boy again and believes that there’s still magic in the world. imagine loving magic all your life, and then discovering that magic loved you too.
Reading Six of Crows for the second time (first time was 5 years ago) and hOW did I never notice that Kaz wasn't actually a moody broody barrel boss?? He's literally so easily entertained!
Like this part (translated from the German version):
Kaz: "When we get our money, you can burn your Kruge to keep warm"
Jesper: "I'm going to pay someone to burn my Kruge for me"
Kaz *catches up to him*: "Why don't you pay someone to pay someone to burn your Kruge for you? That's how the big bosses do it!"
Jesper: "You know what the big bosses do? They pay someone to pay someone..."
Their voices got quieter as they walked ahead and the others followed them
I can only imagine that Kaz, the so called never smiling, no-fun, hardened barrel-boss kept going "Oh, but the REAL big bosses pay someone to pay someone to PAY someone to pay someone to burn their kruge for them!"
And Jesper replies "I don't disagree, but the ACTUAL big bosses pay someone to pay someone to pay someone to pay someone to pay someone to burn their kruge for them!" until Matthias eventually yells at both of them to shut the fck up
you know, i really think one of the funniest parts of soc is knowing that kaz and inej heard about the dekappel's impenetrable security and went "alright bet" and stole it just to prove a point
The Crows are to the Grishaverse as the Guardians of the Galaxy are to Marvel. Like all the avengers and shadow and bone characters are like “ahh the weight of world is on our shoulders” but all the crows and the guardians just want their goddamn money
I have too much time on my hands and I wanted to prove my point, so enjoy these guardians quotes replaced by the crows characters
Van Eck: [insert long villain monologue here]
Kaz: yeah, blah blah blah but WE’D LIKE TO GET PAID
Inej: The contact is making me wait.
Kaz: That’s just a negotiation tactic - trust me, this is my speciality. Whereas yours is more… stab, stab, stab
Nina: I have no need of the money
Kaz: Well great, more money for the rest of us!
Jesper: What’s that?
Wylan: Don’t touch that, it’s a bomb
Jesper: AND YOU JUST LEAVE IT LYING AROUND!???
Wylan: … well I was gonna put it in a box
Matthias: I’m a warrior, an assassin. I don’t dance.
Nina: Really? Well, in my country we have a legend about people like you. It’s called Footloose. And a great hero, named Kevin Bacon, teaches an entire city of people with sticks up their butts that, dancing, well it’s the greatest thing there is.
Matthias: Who put the sticks up their butts? That is cruel.
i love how sankta neyar's speech and character was relevant to all the characters there. to wesper it was "you guard against pain. you guard against joy." to kanej it was "but when you allow yourself to be blindsided by love... two worlds make a universe. he's not my weakness. he's my universe." to zoya it was "i closed my heart, as if that was the solution to ending all pain. what a safe way to live. what a small way as well." for tolya i'm sure he loved how poetic neyar was and that a shu saint was talking to them. and for nina well... "and i will see him through his days. sharing every moment... until he is part of the night sky."
He actually looks at ease here if only for a second. I wonder if he thought he was dreaming still. Do you think Kaz Brekker, Dirtyhands, the bastard of the Barrel and the deadliest boy in Ketterdam has had dreams about waking up to Inej Ghafa beside him? I definitely do.
I actually really love this tiny Kanej moment. Inej apologies for touching him and then moves on for his sake- she doesn’t ask questions, she just lets it go. Lets him recover.
love the message of inej saying she would fight for kaz, but could not heal him. because she would not waste her life trying. love that she realises that love is not enough to move on from something as traumatic as what they both went through - love that that message is stated in the book. because inej as a character wants freedom more than anything, from tante heleen, from ketterdam and the dregs and even kaz. and she’s willing to walk away from him for herself, which is not a selfish choice but actually a very healthy one, especially for inej. and i love kanej, i love that he reunites her with her family, that their ending is open and shows the steps they take towards healing, that they end by holding hands and inej gets vengeance on pekka and a ship she uses to carry out her justice.
Do you know what I find kinda hilarious? Everyone portrays Kaz as this grumpy wet cat who is annoyed at the Crows and their antics, like Jesper's fidgetiness for example, or his relationship drama with Wylan, or Nina's quips, but I don't think Kaz was at any point of the books annoyed at the Crows' characteristics. At least in his internal dialogue he was never bothered by any of it.
He MAYBE was when they messed up, yes, but he was never like "Can Jesper just sit still" or "Can Wylan stop being such a goody-two-shoes" or "Can Nina shut up for once". Meanwhile EVERY single Crow (save Wylan I think), including Inej, has at some point of the story wished violence upon him, some of them more than once 😂
