it's the levels of scrutiny too.

a movie that has a largely-female cast has to be well-written, well-shot, well-acted, well-advertised. people will spend 2 hours on youtube talking about a single plot hole; about a moment of bad pacing, about a singular background character's poor scripting. if there isn't something obvious, they will say - well there's nothing specifically bad, but it wasn't specifically good either.

they will turn out another all-male movie, and it's just a movie.

a book that has queer representation in it has to defy every convention of writing while also being true to traditional plot, structure, format, and pacing. it must have no boring chapters, no missteps, no awkward dialogue. it must be able to "prove" that any queer relationship "makes sense", their sparks must fly off the page and their love must be eternal. the writing must be clear and beautiful, the storyline original and fresh, the values traditional but with an undercurrent that is modern and saucy.

they will turn out another book without queer rep, where a man and woman just-fall-in-love, and it's just a book.

i am latinx. i am queer. i am nb & neurodivergent. my father said to me once: you will need to be exceptional to be just-as-good, and you will need to be beyond exceptional before they see you as just-a-person, and not your labels.

i am not beyond exceptional. i am a human person. i am skilled because i worked my ass off to be skilled.

i am currently reading a book that's so-bad-it's-good about a girl that falls in love with a vampire. i was 64% of the way through the book before she figures out tall-dark-fanged is not natural. i like books like these, i like letting myself relax while i just enjoy the read. but i do spend a lot of time wondering - would this have been published if it was about queer people? would this have gotten past the editors if the characters weren't white and sexy?

i want to write a movie about being a woman in a male space, and i want to start that movie with a 10 minute scene where the woman is lectured with the exact same whining that occurs in the youtube comments of even the trailers for those movies: "haven't we had enough diversity?" "we've had enough girl power movies" "sorry, this is just pandering. it's boring."

here's what's fucked up: it shouldn't matter, you're right. my identity shouldn't fold after my name like a battalion of stars: a cry of what i've gone through. what we all know i had to move past and through. i should just be a writer, plain and simple, without my work being shifted through with tweezers - i know everything i make, always, i am incredibly responsible for. beholden to. i don't like knowing that if i fuck up, i am also fucking up for every person like me. every person in a community i belong to.

once, back in undergrad, i wrote a short story about a girl who had been kicked by a horse. it was my first time writing about my experience with my ocd; i felt proud of it. the story was mostly about grief and slow recovery. the queerness of the main character was not important to the plot, my main character was just-queer. there wasn't even a romantic interest in it.

i remember one of my classmates being disappointed. "i just feel like you always write about girls who like girls, and i'm bored of it," he said. "you're a beautiful writer, but i'm like - oh, at some point, it's gonna be gay again." during the workshop, he folded his hands over my story and said, "and okay, i'm just going to say it. she's ocd, she's gay, she's depressed - it's a little much for me to believe is all happening to one person."

it is a little much to be that person (and more besides). i have therapy weekly, after all.

Jim is amazing nb/genderqueer rep for many reasons but one of them is the writers didn't shy away from the complexities of gender and queer identities and they let Jim just be themself even if it's confusing to other characters or even the audience

One thing that gets to me is the way Jim is also not sure about their own gender. When asked if they've been a woman the whole time their answer isn't a clear "yes" or "no" but actually "yeah, i guess, I don't know". And later when the crew is going on about Jim being a woman and being different Jim snaps and explains that the crew has known them as Jim, they're still Jim, and that's it. The crew eventually gets it and they all use they/them proonouns on Jim

I'm used to nb characters getting introduced as already knowing their identity for sure and using they/them strictly, or it only being implied by a character being magically refered to as they by everyone (even people who've just met them) and it's not that this kind of unrealistic rep can't be good or valuable but I live for messy, complicated genderqueer people fucking around with gender

Jim never uses the words trans or nonbinary or genderqueer (and why would them? in the 1700s they didn't have the same terms we have today to express all this shit), but their story is so obviously a trans one and the writers really don't shy away from that messiness but rather embrace it, even if a cis/binary audience doesn't understand it. Because Jim isn't there to teach us about what nonbinary means. They're just there to exist and make us actually feel seen. So much trans/nb rep just feels like an opportunity to teach cis people what we are and what our terms mean in a very simple and non-nuanced way. But ofmd isn't about that at all

It's so unapologetically queer and it's not a chance to teach cishets about us. In fact, if cishets don't already understand the nuance of queer identity, they probably won't understand a big chunk of the series (and that's fine. they are not the target audience)

Another thing that stands out to me about Jim is like- they sleep with Olu. And it's no big deal. And i fucking love that. Jim's gender isn't invalidated for it, and Olu's sexuality isn't a big deal either

I am so happy about sex and sexuality for genderqueer folks being explored here in such a simple but meaningful way

don't know where else i'm going with this but i guess tldr: ofmd is some of the best queer representation I've seen bc they don't mind getting super messy and confusing and nuanced and letting the characters just be queer in ways cishets might never understand

Several people have been kind enough to let me publish their thoughts on fandom, community, and queerness to celebrate Pride in the Library. Today's piece comes from @lqtraintracks.

I got into fandom a long, long time ago, way back before I found HP in 2012. My early days in another fandom (days meaning years) are not a time I want to revisit, even though it started out really good. I got to explore my sexuality for the very first time there. I met my first gf there. And those things were beautiful, for sure; they were just short-lived. After a couple of years, I met an abuser, and from then on my fandom life was predetermined by them—what I could and couldn’t read, could and couldn’t write, who I could and couldn’t form friendships with, etc. And even in the midst of that, there were those friendships that bolstered me. @elrhiarhodan, I’m looking at you.

But after 13 ½ years of that… I found HP. And I found a wonderful person who would change my life. I met Shelly / @unmistakablyoatmeal. For the first time in a very long time, I saw someone writing queerly and freely, who, far from being limited to one pairing for life, was writing all kinds of pairings (and threesomes), dynamics, and stories! I was so powerfully drawn to that freedom, and to her, and in no small way, she and this fandom are why I survived, and how I escaped and started to change my life and reclaim it as my own.

I’ve met so many wonderful people here, many of whom have become close friends, my best friends. I’ve been writing all the queer smut my little queer heart has desired for many years now, and it’s been beyond amazing.

But something changed for us a few years ago, and our community hasn’t been the same since. The person who wrote the canon turned on us. She revealed herself to be all kinds of monstrous.

There were clues, of course—the antisemitism inherent in her Goblins, the fat phobia, the queer baiting without any actual rep, the racism and ignorance shown in naming Cho Chang, etc. We knew but maybe we didn’t want to know. And being white and not Jewish, I lived under an umbrella of privilege that meant I didn’t have to see it until other people began pointing these things out to me.

But then the transphobia started. And kept going. And it became her platform. And it got worse, and worse, and fucking worse

As painful and horrific as that has been, it seems to have done what that sort of vile bigotry has always done though: It’s shown us that we are and will always be stronger, wiser, more loving, and ultimately undefeatable. I’ll speak for myself: I wasn’t writing trans characters before. I was afraid I’d get it wrong. JKR’s evil bullshit is what pushed me to get over myself.

This fandom is where I have learned the most about the queer community I love. It’s where I’ve truly learned to write. And it’s where I’ve learned about facets of queer life I’d never connected to properly before out of the fear of trying.

Here’s what I’ve learned: Bloody no one comes together like we do! No one supports one another like we do! We’ve forged a stronger bond because of some terf’s hate, and I feel closer to my fellow queer creators than ever.

This fandom, you beautiful people, have taught me so much, continue to teach me so much. I’m honored to share this space with you. Happy Pride to all you gorgeous people being your trans, nb, fluid, ace, bi, pan, poly, intersex, queer, powerful selves. Thank you from the bottom of my little queer heart. I love you.

Just finished Good Omens S2 and boyyy that was some well executed tragedy and queer rep. Which is hard to do both of at once because of, y'know, history. (The little details like that outfit Gabriel wears to try and sacrifice himself. The casual, normal inclusion of sapphic women and nb people! Having a human nb character in the background who has a loving husband and gets to wear cute clothes and their husband talks easily about "my spouse" and everyone is good and normal about it. The genuinely great romance between Beelzebub and Gabriel. The way queerness and even queer culture is present and yet it isn't the entire story it's just a fact of life!!!!) The way we have to watch, no music, in real time, as Crowley says what he has to say, knowing it's too late wknsiwnsuwksk it's everything. The writing. The acting. God damn. @neil-gaiman thank you this was excellent and I am devastated in the best way. I'm so sorry that Tumblr is doing it's "nothing is ever good enough" thing at you rn. This is actually really really good both in terms of artistic merit and in terms of queer rep. Like genuinely it made me so happy as a queer person to see queer identities so well represented. I feel both seen and heard and I am deeply satisfied with the story.

cuddle headcanons (PenShach, Bepo + a little Law)

NB reader, poly he/they Law, transmasc Penguin word count: 0.8k

PenShach

Pen is usually the big spoon, for both of you, but if he's feeling particularly giving, he'll let Shach be the big spoon for a while - it's a habit he's carried from childhood, letting Shachi 'guard' his back whenever Penguin's feeling vulnerable

Pen moods when he doesn't mind either you or Shachi being the big spoon, but in that case you two gotta rock-paper-scissors for it; generally Penguin likes when you and Shachi give him back hugs, it's just particularly when he's sleeping that he gets a little titchy about it

Shachi has no preference either way, but he does like being your little spoon while he faces Penguin so this orca gets the best of both worlds

Shach also has a habit of just jumping on the bed while you and Penguin are already laying there - you're all grateful that Law isn't the only doctor on deck, considering he's made it clear that the next time any one of you three came in with 'bed-leaping' related injuries they'd tell you to walk it off, and you aren't quite sure if captain's being serious about this or not

No more hammock piles either (or at least not poorly made ones) because the last time this happened someone walked away with a limp and the other two had bruises from the fall

Shachi rolls around a lot in his sleep, Penguin's used to this because he grew up with it but it might you take a while to acclimate to Shach's hectic sleeping patterns - typically it mellows out after one of you is the big spoon to him or he holds you in the middle while Penguin smooths out his hair

Shachi sleeps in only his boxers, Penguin needs to have at least a tank top on so there's minimal skin-to-skin contact with his top scars; sometimes, when he's feeling particularly vulnerable, he'll ask you to run your fingers over them, not quite asking his partners for the verbal affirmation and affection but you give it anyway, as does Shacchan

Penguin is 1000% a blanket hog - it's a blanket big enough for three people, he still manages to wrap himself up in it anyway - but it's mostly out of habit from growing up in a frigid climate

You and Shachi have to unroll him in the summer so he doesn't accidentally give himself heatstroke and both (used to) fight for the sheets in the winter; the three of you came to the conclusion that it'd just be easier to have one separate blanket for Penguin and one you and Shachi could share when the temperature dropped so no one would catch a cold from Pen's blanky hogging habits

Bepo

He's a big, fuzzy bear, of course he'd be absolute heaven to lay, rest, and sleep on

Bepo is VERY cuddly and sometimes gets a little carried away, quite literally carrying you away and swinging your feet off the ground even though you've only been gone for what could range from a day or an hour

He tends to be a little shy, though, especially in the beginning of your relationship, asking with small tugs to your sleeve with avoided eye contact - nowadays, all he has to do is nose his snout into the crook of your neck for you to know that Bepo wants cuddle time, but he's still a little bit (a lot a bit) bashful about being affectionate with you around people that aren't a part of the Heart crew - those Bep considers family, essentially

Bepo sleep talks, it's mostly nonsense a lot of the time, a lot of it is also "aye aye captains" with varying levels of comprehensibility depending on how groggy this sleep talking session is, but every now and again there will be stuff specifically about you

"Dom't tougch theymmr.... mym parbner.." and whatnot, mixed in with cute little snuffs and Bepo's feet kicking at the air until you smooth out his fur and give him snout and forehead kisses to calm him down - lord knows what he's actually dreaming about because when you ask him the next morning, he can never remember

Sometimes Law drags his feet into Bepo's room after a long, weary day and Bepo really can't say no to his childhood friend, so you'll have to share Bepo's fluffy warmth for a little bit, the few hours Law does manage to sleep - but frankly there's enough room for both of you on there and would you really oppose seeing your captain sleepy, affectionate (to Bepo) and not at all grumpy for once?

Don't push them on it, though, or Law can and will get up like a disgruntled cat that no longer wants to be touched after you've moved just an inch too much for their liking

Every now and again, usually if he's just woken up and still very sleepy, Bepo's instincts kick in and he tries to lick ("groom") you and you're hit with unfortunate morning bear breath - yes, you get cute rumbly polar bear purrs when he's not quite awake yet but at what cost?! Worth it tho

Ahhh cruel cruel. I'm gonna try not to overthink this and just go with my gut

1. Vurt by Jeff Noon. Truly bizarre cyberpunk fever dream from the 90s.

2. The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle. Similar to the movie, much sadder but also often much funnier.

3. Pearls of Lutra by Brian Jacques. This book has made me cry more than once, and I literally used to larp on the playground as one of the main characters.

4. The Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir. (cheating I know). These books grabbed me by the throat and threw me headlong into a hyperfixation that has been consuming me ever since. The audiobooks are STUNNING

5. Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao. What if Pacific Rim got mixed up with Chinese history. Feminine rage, polyamory, and morally ambiguous characters I can't help but love.

honorable mention: Phoenix Extravagant by Yoon Ha Lee. A gorgeous alternate history/fantasy set in Korea during Japanese occupation. Some of the best NB/wlw/bi rep I've read.

I'm sure if asked tomorrow I'd have a different list RIP I read a lot and I'm indecisive

i’ve btched plenty about kuukou’s writing in the stage but had hirono-san not been at the helm i highly doubt i would have cared for stage bat as much as i do lmao

i’ve fairly recently talked about how he defined the way kuukou moves in auxiliary media and how it brought to life how i envisioned he moved but it bears repeating hirono-san gave me everything and more lmao

like i still think about kuukou stalking up on some guy in track 3, twirling his mic and actually using it as a bludgeoning weapon with utter glee lol he’s so violent 💜

i love love love the feedback loop that quietly goes on behind the scenes with kuukou’s actors lmao

hirono-san mentioned in their cross talk that hayama-san’s 5th live performance was a frame of reference for the kuukou audition iirc, hayama-san a few years later during the 9th live imitated the way hirono-san used to bow as kuukou after nurusara’s division rep battle, and the bat actors took the bat seiyuu’s very cute 9th live blunder, missing their cue to introduce themselves in sync, and owned bat’s chaos by introducing themselves with their individual quirks in their rep live lol

lol during that cross talk, hirono-san mentioned he was endlessly amused by kuukou being tied up and angrily trying to talk in bat’s first drama track and i’m very happy he got to live it for himself after being tied up by dohifu in bat vs mtr lmao

still cracks me up dohifu had their very gay my home duet and kuukou literally went ‘REALLY???? IN FRONT OF MY SALAD?????’ lmao

i’ve been trying my hardest to talk around stage kuukou’s writing but personal bangers despite are!!!!!

him trying to fight jakurai and when the man passed out without kuukou even doing anything he went, ‘bruh🧍‍♂️’!!!!!!!! him getting in hifumi’s face after being called out for his shitty attitude!!!!! him playing the bad guy to bring hitoya and jakurai together!!!!!!

kuukou: *points* HITOYA!!!!!!

kuukou: *points again* JYOOSH!!!!!!

i wish i was normal about bat’s rep live lol like while we may suspect that performance was borne out of his looming graduation, hirono-san snapped off that last remaining chain of sanity and went crazy lol

i think about him butting heads and screaming at kenta-san, one of the ddb guys who is probably the only one who could match that energy lmao, the roaring growing in frequency until he held up his jacket, nagoya side out, and yelling, ‘NAGOYAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!’ until he blacked out on stage all the time 😭😭😭

other moments from the rep live i think about lol is that skit where hitoya totally scams kuukou and jyushi lmao but when hitoya told them the statue they ‘broke’ cost like 1000000¥ or some outrageous amount, kuukou started retching and that’s so relatable LOL

and that moment during the host club invasion where he walks in and goes ‘sup btches it’s been a while 😈’ and proceeds to destroy fragrance LOL

and him stuffing like four marshmallows at once in his mouth, expecting to be able to continue being able to speak lmao

and him going so hard his rings flew off and an unplanned mini encore happened as he tried to look for them LOL

saw a report that they were going stoopid one day during their rep live run the crowd was unwilling to let them go so hirono-san convinced the producers to let them do another encore on top of the several they already had 😭😭😭

and can you believe the hype never stopped even when bat wasn’t the focal point lol i heard that man at one point needed to be dragged off the stage during bop2023 bc he staunchly said they’d have to dim the lights on him for him to stop😭😭😭😭

there’s so so many bop2023 moments i think about like his redux rock paper scissors game, or him lifting up sasara only to drop him a second later lmao, him bullying stage posse LOL, the way they let him bring the hype whenever music lulled

and ofc the nb duet lol if the stage doesn’t want to do much by way of ichiro and kuukou’s relationship, thank fck hirono-san was there to carry lmao

crying over that one day when neither ichiro nor kuukou could catch their shared coke bottle to save their lives and kept laughing at each other while performing 😭😭😭😭😭

thank you hirono-san for establishing into stage canon kuukou dropped his bandana at ichiro’s feet after their breakup and that ichiro still has kuukou’s red bandana somewhere. it may not stick but that’s such an amazing take on that bandana’s whereabouts

daigo-san’s jyushi is so BABYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

THE top line i always think about is him joyfully walking into hitoya’s office in bat’s rep live and going, ‘hitoya-san!!!!! i’ve come to play!!!!! 😃😃😃’

previously that had been me crying anytime i thought about him skipping into hitoya’s office in track 3, cheerfully calling for him only to switch mid sentence into vkei mode once he noticed hitoya has guests lmao

his kuukou impersonation is legendary no joke lmao

AND SO IS ANY MOMENT WHERE HE PICKS KUUKOU UP LONG CAT STYLE SHOUT OUT TO BOP2023 SPECIFICALLY WHEN HE SWUNG HIM AROUND A LITTLE BIT TOO 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

that’s the second most bat moment i think about lol

i like how sometimes daigo-san’s default jyushi expression is the equivalent of this lol

another top moment i think about is him yelling how much he loves kuukou and hitoya during bop2023 😭😭😭

especially when you think about those early days of bat???? his first stage role ever was track 3 and he talked about learning the ropes from ruito-san, late night train rides with hirono-san after rehearsals and sharing his insecurities, bonding with them both despite the two of them being shy and UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH

like I COULD CRY about daigo-san incessantly commenting under hirono-san’s posts after track 3 and finally hirono-san went, ‘bro what gives???’ and daigo-san went, ‘i’m trying to be your friend lol’ 😭😭😭😭😭😭

all that bonding culminated to a point daigo-san can make fun hirono-san in his most trying hours lol (he lost a lot of money gambling LOL)

forever haunted by him commenting he and sakakihara-san had an in depth conversation about jyushi after track 3 and we never had them in the same room 😭😭😭😭

i also think about this one report i read where hitoya and kuukou were beefing as they usually do so he sat himself aside and lol when kuukou asked him why’s he sitting over there he responded, ‘well i didn’t want to get in the way of your flirting 😒’ LOL

jyushi being hitoya’s (current) number one fanboy is my canon lol so i’m happy he got a whole solo about hitoya lol

another top moment i think about is jyushi dramatically crying he’s going to die alone in shinjuku because he got separated from kuukou lmao

will forever and always be bitter the mtc rep live with bat as guests wasn’t available for stream so we missed kuukou bullying samatoki by repeating everything he said, kuukou and jyushi getting chased around by juto and rio while samatoki and hitoya waffled (and samatoki oogled hitoya’s body lmao) and jyushi got arrested by juto so he started crying for kuukou who came out asking what was wrong as he piggybacked rio LOL

idk if you can tell but i like stage jyushi lol he’s very funny

both hirono-san and daigo-san are so down bad for ruito-san it’s so funny but i don’t blame them LIKE HAVE YOU SEEN HIM LOL

it’s so funny to see it bleed into their kuukou and jyushi like we ain’t ever getting over them essentially grinding up on him during one of bat’s songs in track 3 LOL

ruito-san is too peak for hitoya frfr lol ain’t no way we’ll get another hitoya who can do synchronised backflips with kuukou 😭😭😭😭😭😭

i almost forgot lol hirono-san commented that after track 3, he got stuck calling himself ‘sessou,’ kuukou’s personal pronoun lol, and similarly, ruito-san has a hard time not touching his chin like hitoya does LOL

stage hitoya is fascinating, simply bc of how much more adjusted he is than canon hitoya lol

like i cannot stress enough how the best morally grey hitoya was written when he scammed kuukou and jyushi into doing good deeds and favours for him lmao

since he’s so well adjusted, some of his and kuukou’s heart to heart changed in execution, but it was neat seeing him call out kuukou for assuming people can be effortlessly strong like him, and have that thought come back when he’s facing jakurai

idk if i have a preference between the stage vs canon on how they resolved hitoya’s and sensei’s relationship but i still think the stage absolutely cooked lol

will always be crying over kuukou’s jakurai impersonation lol and how he revealed it by teasing hitoya for having a date but kuukou apparently got the details wrong so he confidently corrected him that they had gone out for strawberry milkshakes

and fanboy jyushi fell to his knees crying how cute that was, he gets it LOL

i cannot stress this enough, i exclusively write everything but fem reader, y’all got enough .

that being said, feel free to request anything else at all- when it’s not specified i will just assume gender neutral for the sake of inclusion

First impression - dear lord i hated him in the pilot episode. he was so terrible and awful to me.

Hmmmmm okay, I will give this my best shot

One thing I like about it that I know you also enjoy in a series is that it feels like there are a lot of threads to pull at as a fan. Some of this is because they laid very good groundwork for certain reveals -- it's absolutely a show that feels different on a rewatch because of worldbuilding and character details that come into play later -- but some of it is also because it is an all-ages show on the Disney channel that the creator originally wanted to pitch as a darker, more horror-focused adult series, and it shows, and it's very possible to reach inside those inner working and pull something interesting out. Like, the aesthetics of the show are explicitly inspired by Hieronymus Bosch paintings (there are in fact multiple characters named after him), from what I understand the original pitch involved literal, actual Hell and had to be softened to "the Demon Realm," the primary villain is a huge dig at Christian extremism even though they can't quite say it out loud...... in some ways the fact that they had to dial down certain elements has made it extra fascinating to be a fan of, because it feels like getting handed the baton to go wild with the things the creators couldn't quite take all the way given network restrictions but are still in the DNA of the show.

--Also it is really, really funny to see them try to write a villain who is a Puritan whose motivation is a result of being a Puritan without being allowed to outright say anything too negative about Christianity.

The other thing is that one reason all that shows is because they still crammed a lot of it into the show anyways. The primary antagonist's evil plan is... genocide. There's a whole horrific subplot about one of the main characters turning out to be the latest in a line of murdered clones and at one point you see a fucked-up clone graveyard full of the skeletons of dozens of other dead clones. The main setting is the dead, mostly-rotted body of a giant god-like being that has since turned into a chain of islands. So for people interested in the darker and more mature side of the storyline, there's plenty to work with.

And all of that is a backdrop to a very solid cast of characters and character relationships, because you know, an interesting setting and premise alone does not a compelling piece of media make. It takes a little while for some of the darker and more complex elements of the plot to emerge but by the time it does you have reasons to care about it, which is of course the kind of thing that makes higher stakes really work. It's genuinely a very funny series and I think the sense of humor would gel with you, and I like that it actually explores the impact certain things would actually have on the characters -- not the least of which is that it handles its portal fantasy premise in a way that feels like a direct answer for everyone who was very dissatisfied with the Chronicles of Narnia, with a protagonist who is constantly struggling with the whole "Well, I ran off to a cool fantasy world and have developed close and loving relationships there and really grown as a person, but I do have another life I don't think I can run away from forever" question. (And I really like how they've been handling it!)

--And okay, I know that you, like me, are not one to be sold on rep and rep alone but it feels like a travesty not to at least mention that there is a (very cool, would have been one of my favorites regardless of gender) nonbinary character who is like, a real, grown adult even though a lot of the cast are teens, and it's just so refreshing to see a like, fairly major, late 40s nb character handled well and heavily involved in the main plot and the life of one of the main characters. (Although they don't show up until S2).

Obviously like any show it's not perfect, and it's especially frustrating that the plot and writing had to take some visible hits as a result of S3 getting mostly axed (turned into three double-length episodes instead of a full season; we hate to see network meddling), but I do think you'd enjoy parts of it a lot!

Also they poke fun at Harry Potter sometimes (due also being a series involving a magic school) in ways that are very satisfying, and I need more people at the intersection of the TOH and TLT fandoms to understand why me comparing the Emperors in both series is funny. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don’t know if I’ve made a post specifically about this, in case I haven’t I’m doing it now. There was a time I was very addicted to reading sapphic books, so here’s a list of the ones I read and my opinion about it:

*There will be no spoilers, so in case anyone has read any of these books or want more detailed opinions with spoilers just dm me or send asks that I’ll gladly talk more about it

Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo - I enjoyed a lot this book. Very emotional (at least for me). I really liked the way it’s written (the characters in the present and throughout the story going back to the past to explain certain things). Main character is a bisexual woman and she isn’t afraid of calling people out when they erase her identity by calling her a lesbian, there’s just some things I think it stereotypes bisexuality even more. There’s also lesbian rep, also some stereotypes about lesbians. Latino rep, though also with some stereotypes. Tw: suicide (also I have some issues about how this was written).

Her Royal Highness - the first thing that I thought when I finished this book was “that was it?”. It feels rushed, I think either the book should’ve been longer to explain some things or it should’ve been a series. The main character is bi and her romantic interest is a lesbian. I personally thought the lesbian rep is shitty. Idk if it was a problem with the translated version but I don’t remember the word lesbian ever being mentioned in the story. The lesbian character comes out to the main character after the other one says she’s bi and the lesbian character just says something like “I’m like you except for the boys part”. That’s how she describes her being a lesbian 💀

Girl Made of Stars - TW: rape (I don’t remember being explicitly described, but the whole story talks a lot about it). Main character is bi, her romantic interest is a non-binary lesbian (so nb rep). I really liked this book, I don’t remember anything I thought was a little problematic or anything in particular I didn’t like about it.

Girls Made of Snow and Glass - I really liked this story, I thought I wasn’t going to enjoy it because it’s not a modern setting, idk exactly when the story is supposed to be, I’d guess Middle Ages or something like that. It really is like a fairy tale but not so childish. Considering is not modern setting I wouldn’t know the sexuality of the characters because they don’t label it, they’re just sapphic. For me it was like a different version of Snow White. Also, from what I remember the main character as well as her romantic interest are POC. I enjoyed how some chapters are through the main character POV and some others are through her stepmother’s POV.

Girl, Serpent, Thorn - Also not modern setting. I’m pretty sure if not all characters most of them are POC. Characters’ sexualities are also not labeled. It also feels like a not so childish fairy tale. I liked it, though not as much as I liked Girls Made of Snow and Glass.

Before You Say I Do - I loved this one, there’s barely any angst, very fluff, feels like a fanfiction which I loved it. The whole time while I read it I imagined both characters as Kara and Lena from Supergirl 😂. One of the main characters is a lesbian, the other one I don’t remember if she’s bi, unlabeled or ends up figuring out she’s a lesbian. There’s some NSFW so I wouldn’t recommend if you’re 18 or under or if you’re not comfortable with that kind of thing.

Cool For The Summer - Main character is bi as well as her romantic interest. I think one of them is Jewish and Lebanese descendant (correct me if I’m wrong though), the other one I think is Russian and Jewish descendant. There’s also an aroace character (she’s a minor character). I enjoyed it, though disappointed about not having any lesbian rep.

Cinderella Is Dead - main character is black. Like the title says it’s based on a fairytale, though it’s not childish. I really liked how society in this book was described. It’s after the whole story about Cinderella. I have to warn that there’s some mentions of domestic abuse and you’re probably going to hate basically all men in this story because it’s a very misogynistic society. The characters are also not labeled.

I’ve also read some books that I don’t think have an English version so I won’t even bring them up.

Hanbok design--mix of European, Contemporary, Korean and gender fluid to Korean standards.

I technically have the cloth to do this and the tailoring skills. Not the boots, but ya know, sometimes...

So the basics for those that are not sighted/low vision is an Audrey Hepburn dress with an added bow on our left and empire waistline with pinstripes and a black ruffle at the bottom. And it has.... pockets. This mixes business dress attire, Korean chima, with a classic style that won't go out of fashion easily. The dress overlaps in the back, but ties in the front. I think the skirt will be sewn up. In terms of flexibility the top can also be made into a longer skirt by simply folding down the top section into skirt section, making for an elegant black tie.

Over the top of that is a business jacket that's styled like a durumagi, though shortened to business jacket length. It's tied with a otkoreum and has a button underneath. I added the button so it doesn't depend solely on the ties. The ties are short because toilet+ ties is not fun.

There are of course added pockets on the pinstripe jacket. 'cause NBs and women deserve pockets.

Below the skirt are trouser/pants which mimic sokpaji/paji. Which were both worn by women and men.

I changed the collar from the traditional collar to a lapel collar, because I wanted to make it feel like a business suit situation. I was told by a relative that there is no way one could make hanbok look "formal" business attire and this is my way to say, "yes, it can."

But the sleeves will be Korean with the original curve, rather than the straight ones... 'cause I think it's a travesty that they are being made into Western sleeves to fit Western clothing.

As for the other set dressing? Boots in traditional Korean wear was for men. The reason the paji were designed as they were were so they could fit into boots.

And the top knot is obvious.

So I think this is NB-ish, gender fluid, celebrates European clothes (granted from the 19th century and 1950-1960's-ish), has traditional elements of hanbok, so it still reads as one. But not too masculine that it reads "woman tries to look like she's trying to imitate men." type of fashion. Just that little bit of a ruffle for a throw back in history to remind people that men loved ruff(le)s too.

I also designed it so it's not male-gaze centric. 'cause screw that.

One can also remove the dress and wear the jacket with a shirt and just the pants too. ^_^

BTW, I had a thread a while back on Twitter about Lois Lane and the hanbok she wore being odd...

While I know pinstripes are hard to animate for a number of reasons, though it's slightly easier with the current tech, this is closer to what I would have envisioned for Lois. All at once masculine and feminine in both a US throwback style and a tip off for Korean. (granted maybe not the hair, but a ribbon could be added that's similar. Or she could go and don one of those wigs/do a clip on.. though that might be a stretch) It's formal for a party--it screams reporter who can't quite quit being off the job, and it celebrates both shores without compromising anything.

While I didn't originally design this for her, because I drew it sometime last year, this is probably the best rep of Korean American-ish feels I could pull. 'cause Korean women love Audrey Hepburn who had that mix of masculine and feminine and tomboy which usually looks good on smaller frames.

I suppose, too, me knowing a bunch of hanbok and how they've bent, not bent, and how they work, their symbolism, and having physically made some... I understand how to flex it like this.

I also kind of have a history of fashion in my head... so I know what to pull to make it feel timeless and I understand the types of clothes that has traditionally been on Lois Lane.

So this is my strongest suggestion for design.
