a fic every day in august (11/31)
Thorin Oakenshield x Bilbo Baggins (modern) (446 words)
“Don’t. Move.” Bilbo said curtly.
Thorin sat, hunched on a stool in the bathroom as Bilbo lathered his long nose with a generous amount of sunscreen. Recently having recovered from a series of sunburns, again, Bilbo had sat him down and insisted on taking proper care of his skin.
“I’ll be fine,” he insisted every time. “I never burn, I just tan.”
“Tan my ass, you’re as red as a lobster.”
“Uncle!” A small shrill voice shouted from downstairs. “Hurry up!”
Not knowing which of them he was referring to, Bilbo quickly replied, “We’ll be down in a minute, Frodo!”
The young toddler came scuttling up the stairs anyways, carrying a bucket of chalk he was going to bring to the park with them.
“Careful you don’t drop that here, lad,” Thorin warned, pulling Frodo up on his lap as Bilbo worked some sunscreen in the tense muscles of his neck. “Otherwise Uncle Bilbo will have a cleaning fit, again.”
Bilbo nudged him, but kept quiet. Frodo giggled as a smear of white sunscreen was still visible on Thorin’s forehead. Thorin reached for the remaining tube as Bilbo massaged the backs of his ears and smushed some sunscreen onto Frodo’s own nose.
“Hey!” he shouted, scrunching his nose up and rubbing it away with the back of his hand.
“You’ll need to wear some too, Frodo,” Bilbo said as he stepped back and checked any spots he may have missed.
“I don’t wanna.”
“You have to. Or do you want to end up looking like Uncle Lobster here?”
“No!”
“Go on then.”
Bilbo quickly covered Frodo’s whole face with sunscreen, clucking like a mother hen at the jittery toddler. When he was done too, he grabbed his cap from the hook on the door and set it on his head.
“Right then! Off to the park,” he said, shoving his thumbs into the belt loops of his pants and rocking up on his toes. Frodo jumped down and hurried down the stairs again. “When is your sister coming here, Thorin?”
“Oh, she’ll text me when she’s close. I don’t know how on earth you’d be so excited about Fili and Kili coming to stay here for the weekend, one kid is already exhausting.”
“Oh, nonsense, the more the merrier. At least I’ll be able to cook more than usual.”
“You already cook as if to feed a whole country, love,” Thorin chuckled.
“Yes, and you always eat like you’re a whole country, so who’s fault is it really, huh?”
“Touché.”
Downstairs, Frodo was yelling at them to hurry up again, so that he could go chalk the paths and sidewalks in the park before anyone else.
