Some tips for The Sims 3 Buy/Build

Install LazyDuchess’ Smooth Patch to alleviate lag, esp in Buy/Build and CAS.

Keep your CC merged and organized, esp your patterns, this will also alleviate a lotta lag across all modes.

When building on community lots, or any lot rlly, avoid going to the edit world menu, and just put testingcheats enabled into the cheat window, then shift+click the ground of the lot to enter Buy/Build mode. This makes leaving it to save a lot easier, with less “preparing” screens to possibly get hung up in.

Lower your settings, you don’t need any adjacent lots loaded, and you certainly don’t need super water on either. You can always switch these back on when you’re done.

While you’re at it, remove your HQ mod, and turn off your Reshade/Gshade preset, or at least turn off your depth shaders. I only ever turn on my depth shaders when I’m taking screenshots for better fps while playing. The DoF shader esp requires a lotta resources your game could be using to simulate all those 78 townie sims instead.

Save as… vs Save, I Save as… at least every third save. It’s also just good habit to keep backups.

When using the CASt tool, set down everything you plan to CASt first, then switch to a category like the wall tool to avoid eventual lag and drag when using it a lot. Love yourself. You don’t have to suffer using CASt tool in an overpopulated category like misc deco.

Utilize the clone option through testing cheats to duplicate already CASted objects, it’ll keep your design just like the dropper tool, but it’s a lot less time consuming, I promise.

Don’t be afraid to use the swatch save tool for objects you use often, esp community lot objects, as it helps to keep your aesthetic consistent. I also keep all of my favorite streetlamps, benches, and public trash bins etc in a convenient custom collection folder to speed up the process of doing multiple lots in one sitting. These handy tools are there, use them.

The issue with custom counters. They mess up sometimes, if you can’t recolor it suddenly, here’s how to fix that. Now if you can’t place down a cupboard suddenly, even though nothing’s in the way, and you’ve got moveobjects on activated, try putting it on the wall a tile over, and then try adding it to your desired spot again. Lastly if you set down counters or cupboards at a corner, and it messes up the textures, but you can still recolor it, you could do what the video I linked above does, or you could simply pull out the CASt tool, and switch it back to any of its original swatches and click the check, then feel free to recolor it as you want.

Railings will also do the “can’t recolor” trick too, but this is a simple fix, just delete it, and replace it, and you’re good.

“Oh no, I switched between buy and build mode, and now my catalogue won’t load, and I can’t click on anything at all!” Don’t panic, hit F2 and/or F3 on your keyboard, these are shortcuts for switching between them, and if you’re lucky it’ll load properly again. Should you get the bug where you load a category and it’s somehow empty, don’t fret, just click on a different category and this should fix it. Then if you get the bug where all the objects you put down disappear suddenly, sorry your game is haunted. Call an exorcist, or just reload, they might reappear if you do.

Tbh, if you run into any kind of major bugs, it’s likely a sign to either save immediately or just restart your game. These only ever show up when you’ve been at it a while ( at least for me ), therefore starting fresh wouldn’t hurt. Probably also wouldn’t hurt to check whether you might’ve installed something the game didn’t agree with by running Dashboard, or put it through the ol’ Save Cleaner.

Honorable Mention: Keep an eye on the texture sizes and poly counts of objects. I know it’s tempting to build these ultra hyperrealistic lots with clutter at every inch, but unless you’re just doing it for screenshots, or for your story, or using it very sparingly, it is not by any means recommended purely for gameplay. This is just the truth when it comes to any Sims game. You don’t want lag, or max memory crashes, or save errors? The Sims 3 is a 32bit game, that’s almost old enough to drive, be easy on it.

Second, I've been practicing with the Lackadaisy style using nothing but traditional art (paper and colored pencils), and I'm nervous about using digital art for the first time😓

I've been procrastinating with practicing digital art for years, and now I'm ready to get started!✨️✨️✨️

Got any helpful tips or advice for drawing Lackadaisy characters with digital art?🤔

Also, I have ADHD and I'm Autistic so trying new things takes time with me😅

Well the nice thing about ADHD and Autism is when you get into something, you get REALLY into something. So if you are able to build a routine that allows you the freedom to explore the medium you want to jump into, then you'll steamroll ahead. If you're finding it hard to kick off that fixation so you can focus easier, try to pair it up with an existing fixation. Are you into every kind of horse? Okay then, draw an example of every warmblood, coldblood, and hotblood you can think of. Every pony, every donkey, every mule. Find some good photos and go to town. Piggy-backing off my existing fixations is how I can chain together a lot of information that I would otherwise struggle to absorb and recall fully.

As for helpful tips, you're already doing it. I think starting with traditional materials is a good way to build up good art habits without the convenience of infinite colors and the undo button. You'll make quicker decisions and be a little less precious about mistakes. Cuz you have to live with them IRL, so might as well keep going even if the work didn't turn out great. Maybe you'll learn something along the way?

A second tip, more specific to Lackadaisy, is breaking characters down into simpler shapes and seeing if you can build them back up again. Feel free to trace them to turn them into mannequins. Then, knowing the proportions of those mannequins, can you draw them doing other things?

And research. Tracy deep-dives into historical stuff like clothing, hairdos, jobs, jewelry, etc. If you immerse yourself in something you find interesting, you'll see it cropping up in your work occasionally. Look into art deco and art nouveau, two schools of design thought that have a thread running between them that goes solidly through the 1920s. Consider how that design philosophy might get integrated into clothing or furniture.

Other than that, digital specific? There's isn't much, just have fun with what program feels good to use. Don't go too nuts on color (you have a million colors, but a million colors does not a good painting make) and make sure the ergonomics of your digital art situation doesn't hurt you longterm. Take breaks for your hands and stretch. It's more strenuous than traditional. Maybe it's the lack of physical feedback or the way we tend to curl around our devices. Not sure, but I find it more draining than trad work.

Halloween is a big deal in the L/n household.

You always won best costume at school, the house (both indoors and out) was always eloquently decorated and you lived, ate, and slept, Spooky day vibes.

Your mother made sure the surrounding neighbors understood the assignment and participated to the best of their abilities. It wasn't just about candy and scaring people, oh no. This was a lifestyle. Now that you were away from home, you were stoked to continue the tradition even if you were the only one to enjoy it.

It was eerie and completely unlike your normal setup. He was used to bright lights and a fresh display of flora on the table before entering your penthouse, not this.

You warned Joker to stay away for the day while you entertained children and their parents stopping by but when did he ever listen? He stuck around the area just in case you needed him.

Since the day was over, he came home.

Hello everyone! Yes i am back once again to say some off topic stuff as usual :3 So apparently i just happened to witness smth, that i think i might have to talk about :

First of all, before i say anything i'd like to say to all my moots and my community in here -> to pls go follow her @euijoosorangepeel (yes she was the writer - euijoosorangeslice before her acc sadly got terminated) and pls go make sure to send asks kindly , ty in advance

now going onto the topic. like what you guys can see, short to the point, us smut writers are practically having to risks our blogs now, having to build our community in fear of being terminated any day.

Obviously, we do not know who are apart of this whole organization going around doing this, and there's no way in stopping them, all we can do is to learn to adapt, and prepare for the worst.

Backup - the most important thing here, is backup, I personally always write my fics, drabbles, replies, in word documents, before i copy paste them here. So if anyone is wondering, yes i have full backup, even for the photos that I use as deco on each post, i have a whole folder full of all the written documents, and a whole folder full of used pictures and decoration banners. And It might be a hassle, but the safest place, is your own computer storage in this case. So i think it'd be smart to keep all written posts, copy pasted in word documents, as backup.

This is also mainly why, you probably never see me complain and scream in agony in random rants about how my drafts get deleted or how tumblr completely reset my writing progress. Because i write everything in word until all is complete & have been checked, then i copy paste it and add some deco and post it in a few min.

So yes i don't have much advise, but this is the best i could give.

To the smut writers that have gone through this nightmare, including my dear moot, i wish you all the best of luck and a safe and happy restart on your careers

Ramone proposes. Not because he's a dude, but because it feels right. It's their dynamic. He would follow Flo to the end of the earth, and he would do anything to make her happy. He doesn't wait long, proposing on only their first relationship anniversary. Technically, a week before, as he proposes on the day they met. He offers that this might be fast, but it was only a week before they were together, it as fast then too, and he says that he didn't think he was worthy of even touching her, and he doesn't think he's worthy of even asking this now, but would she marry him?

She says yes, of course. Tells him he is more than worthy, always has been. He's tearing up, and then they're kissing, and Ramone swears he's the luckiest guy in the world that the most beautiful, sassy, fun girl happened to cruise into his shop and never leave a year ago. Flo is so eternally grateful that she followed her friends into that art deco building, leading her to an utter gentleman dedicated to treating her like a queen no matter what.

They keep kissing, but it's not passionate. They're not making out. They just don't want to leave the other. They stay side by side, overlooking the Ornament Valley from one of their favorite secret pullouts up in the mountains.

We know from the diecasts that during their wedding Ramone is painted up like Flo. She insisted that the color theme could be anything Ramone wanted, and still he matches her. It's a testament to their first interaction again. She's too good to touch. She's already painted perfectly for the wedding. She at least convinces him to do his paintjob in his classic metallic flake.

I like to think it was a smaller wedding. Maybe some relatives if they have any/any that could come. But otherwise, it's just the town residents. The town is Ramones family now, and quickly becoming Flos too. Besides, Flo has come to realize she doesn't miss the crowds from her showgirl days anyways.

Sheriff puts up detour signs to redirect travelers through backstreets. While he enjoys the festivities, he's also very dedicated to ensuring no one barges in on the event.

There's no dress code, though many opted in for a paintjob similar to what they had already, only darker, she with more clear coat. A more formal version of what they already had(for Luigi this resulted in more of an almost gold hue, as straight darkening of yellow is never good)

Ramone tears up again during the vows, but it's alright because this time Flo does too. They kiss long and slow, without a care to who is watching, townie or redirected tourist far off in the distance. They're inseparable the rest of the day, driving so close they're often grazing the other. They masterfully slowdance(unable to resist, they'd been practicing excitedly for at least a week in private), and quickly establish their own freestyle dancing for general music, from carefree and fun to purposeful and flirtatious.

Everyone has a blast, and for all of them but Lizzie, it's their first wedding in town. Lizzie thanks them for getting married in front of the town hall, instead of booking a vendor at a larger, nearby city. They assure her that wasn't even a thought in their heads.

The event was only planned for the afternoon and early evening, but everyone was so happy and joyous, they never opened back up, and simply continued to play the music, hang out, and occasionally dance for the rest of the day and night.

25) The name you chose for your OC, why did you chose it?

For Arvid's name, I was just thinking that dwarf aesthetics generally have a bit of a... half Art Deco, half Viking feel going on for them? so I just thought that leaning into that Scandinavian angle a little bit would be fun. (I was also really fixated on studying Swedish at the time, but I didn't really want to use a specifically Swedish name, so I went with one my little search said was quite common all over Scandinavia, and one I could obnoxiously overpronounce in my head.) (Like the way I tend to read it to myself is with a very grossly exaggerated Swedish accent, lol.)

His last name, Trygg, I chose kinda in the same vein as how J.R.R. Martin did the bastard children's names in GoT depending on the country: it's just... it just means "safe" in Norwegian. I thought it'd be fun for him to have a name that's... not really a name, but more just an adjective, a placeholder given to him out of necessity by the monastery where he was raised. (Which ended up working out really nicely with him getting "Dekarios" to call his own at the end!)

(A fantasy!Norwegian first name and fantasy!Greek last name sound really silly together ngl, but a part of me really loves how strange it is because it's his. Like yeah, people do sometimes wind up with silly names because of their spouses. It's love.)

Iona, as I was kinda developing her, her first placeholder name was "dove" (because of one line of a Dove Cameron song lol) - and I admit, I did just google what names might have similar meanings, in that dove/freedom/independence/autonomy/rebirth vein of things, and one website said that Iona, in Scottish (I believe?) is supposed to mean "dove".

I don't.... fully believe that was correct because I haven't been able to confirm it elsewhere since, but by the time I looked into it further, I got attached to the name, and it... got stuck.

Her last name/maiden name (which is what she uses now), "Raedir", I tried to make a pompous, quintessential Elf Name (to go with her Long Draconic Bloodline), but at the end of the day, it's... really nonsense. Translated, it'd mean something like "unicorn dust", derived from the words "raer" (unicorn) and "mithardir" ("white dust"/snow?), but that meaning is sort of just there to amuse me, because I was looking at a lot of medieval tapestries with unicorns on them at the time.

(One weirdness about it is that, while I know it's supposed to be pronounced "eye-ona" in English, with my Hungarian brain I kept reading it as "ee-yona" on accident. So I decided that "eye-ona" is the "human" pronunciation, and she deliberately went back to pronouncing it the "elvish" way, as "ee-yona", when she started using her maiden name again.)

(A little benefit- if someone is looking for an "Eye-ona" Birchlight, they're not gonna find her. Nope, there's only an "Ee-yona" Raedir here.)

As for Petyr, you're actually reading it perfectly right, lol! I deliberately wanted it to be a little misleading and obnoxious, like it sometimes is in old fantasy novels from like the 70's and 80's. Like sometimes a character will have a very normal name that's spelled- and consequently pronounced in a ~fantasy~ way?

Honestly, I just looked at my build/concept, and thought.... "He's Peter, but stupid. That's it. That's his name. I hate it, it's perfect." So the "-tyr" is pronounced like the god Tyr's name. I don't... really have an answer why, but I do really like the thought of him having to always explain that no, it's not Peter, it's Peh-TYR, like in Tyr, how is this so bloody hard.

"Wildbrook" came from a similar thought, I kinda just... wanted the most "80's fantasy ranger dude" name I could think of, and just like how it is with his whole existence, the fact that I like it actually does bother me a little bit lol.

"Raymond Percival Trevelyan" is basically "Knightly Knightson Canonlastname". "Raymond" means "protector/protecting hands", "Percival", I took from Sir Percival, one of the knights in Arthurian legend, and Trevelyan, as in the last name given to the human Inquisitor in DA:I.

Back in the day, I was leaning really into the whole "archetypal hero character" theme. He was just... a young, pious, knightly idealist who went from said piousness and idealism to absolute disillusionment (and a much less formal relationship with religion). Now, it sounds pretty tongue-in-cheek, to have the Big Strong Former Hero Of The Lands brandish such a deeply pompous name.

7) Does your OC have a favorite and least favorite food?

OH this one is fun!

Okay, so one of my favorite pieces of headcanon that carries across franchises is that dwarves' superior poison resistance translates in them to an extreme tolerance of spice. Like most human foods, they just taste completely bland to to dwarves.

So I like to imagine that Arvid, having grown up in a monastery and eating mostly things prepared with it being shared with non-dwarves in mind, is just... kind of resigned to things not having a lot of flavor. He'll say nice things when asked for his opinion of course, but more often than not, he's simply eating just to put the calories in- no real favorite or least favorite to speak of there. It's more about the physical sensation of not being hungry anymore.

Gale is of course horrified when he learns this (what do you mean my cooking is bland to you, I cooked every meal you've eaten in the past year????? have you just not had food you've liked in a year??????), and makes it his personal mission to learn to cook traditional dwarven cuisine.

He, uh. He winds up accidentally poisoning himself more than once. But his husband is very, very endeared (if worried) and appreciative of the gesture.

Iona has no such troubles- having been a housewife for such a long time, she's a decent cook, but she's used to preparing meals she... didn't really like much at all. All sorts of roasts and steaks, various pieces of dead animals, the occasional potato maybe- and she, in true elf fashion, is no fan of meats in general.

So during their travels, the only time she cooks is the first night ever, when it's just her, Shadowheart, and Astarion (they toss together a weird, bland stew from just a couple potatoes and a fistful of sage they scrounged up- they didn't even notice that Astarion just pushed the food around a bit, they were so out of it), but as soon as Gale joins up, she categorically rejects even touching a wooden spoon.

It's only after the game, living with a person who makes zero demands of her in regards to food, that she finds joy in food and cooking. She can finally make whatever she wants, whenever she wants it, and she experiments as much as she can. All she has to forego is garlic. (Which, well, you win some, you lose some.)

She's.... sometimes successful. But whatever it ends up being, whether it's good or bad, she is the only one who has to eat it, and she bloody well delights in it.

Petyr has been mostly self-sufficient for 20+ years at this point. Most of his food is homegrown or wild-caught, and like with everything else, he learned by experimentation.

I like to think that he doesn't really think of himself as a good cook, but he is infuriatingly good at this too, like he is at everything else.

Like he'll agree to whip up something quick for the group a few tendays into their journey, and make fucking...... perfect venison steaks, with a wild rice- and fresh mushroom risotto, and a gorgeous red wine sauce. Gale can't decide whether to be impressed, or livid. Petyr just shrugs like, "I kept myself fed in the forest for 20 years. What'd you think I was doing in that time, grazing?"

He too is, I think, in the "whatever puts meat on your bones is good enough" mindset when it comes to favorites, but for some reason I think he'd love a good, nice cheese. That'd be something he can't really make himself, so it'd be a special treat to get on his monthly little supply-trips.

i literally stopped playing ts2 a few months ago because it took a billion years to open... rebuilding your downloads folder is a Very tedious task but i heavily recommend it if loading times are impeding on ur ability to have fun

here's my game opening in real time (including reshade loading in)! it's gotten twice as long within the last week as i add more things in my downloads folder but it's staying below a minute so i'll take it

i was really motivated to learn how to make clothing defaults after i went through the clothing dfr database and still had missing spots in my spreadsheet. i mostly didnt like what defaults were available so i might as well figure out how to make some myself

my downloads folder is currently sitting at 3.13gb:

i've default replaced hair, eyes, skins, clothes, hood deco, walls, floors, terrain paint, some food, and a few others

for build/buy mode, if it's not dfr, it's a recolor. i think ts2 object meshes are fine as it is so i don't think i have object dfrs in the first place. i mostly just need the woods to match each other so i've practically downloaded michelle on mts' whole collection

i merge build and buy mode cc immediately before i put them in my downloads folder with simpe (mostly for recolors) or lazyduchess' cc merger program

i'm not too strict about keeping it dfr only. i've downloaded back some essential buy mode cc, mostly monique's computers, michelle's bunk beds, and various toddler stuff because i just find it too tedious to play with toddlers in game without them

The Best Batman

I don't think there is a best Batman or one Batman better than the rest. However, I do think there is one Batman better than the rest at a given thing. A Batman per category or trait.

To be clear, I am only referring to live action movie Batmen. I won't be discussing Batmans across comic books, animation, television, or other media. Only live action movie Batmanses. No other Batmani.

Without further ado, here are the categories:

The Best Detective: Robert Pattinson

2022's The Batman was the best live action demonstration of the Dark Knight's detective chops. It was something so many other portrayals of the character glossed over. Here, you see him put the pieces together and figure out The Riddler's puzzles; which added to the detectiving: It wasn't enough that he had to detectivate crimes, he also had to detectivize puzzles: Double the detective work. He was figuring things out like it was out of Seven (1995) (Another great detective story) We often forget Batman isn't just great at fighting, he's also The World's Greatest Detective. This story shows us why.

The Best Bruce Wayne: Christian Bale

Christian Bale gave us the best portrayal of Bruce Wayne to date. Here I mean Bruce Wayne as the alter ego or cover story. Not Bruce Wayne the person. In the same way that Clark Kent is Superman's disguise according to Bill, Bruce Wayne is Batman's. Bale oozed suave and charisma as Bruce Wayne. No one has done the Billionaire Playboy quite as effectively. What better way to completely misdirect from the fact that you're Batman than being smooth as silk and oblivious? While Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne is a more realistic Bruce Wayne in response to the trauma of having both your parents murdered in front of you, Bale's Bruce Wayne does the actual job of keeping people off the scent that he might even remotely be the Caped Crusader.

The Best Fighter: Ben Affleck

I really wish Ben had been given his own movie to show us more of his Batman. He committed to the role like crazy and showed us all what kind of a street-fighting beast Batman is. In the warehouse scene from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), he breaks bones, snaps necks, and throws guys through walls. There is no greater Batman fight sequence committed to film and this scene alone is enough to earn Ben the title of the best fighting Batman.

The Best Batman: Kevin Conroy

Ok I lied. There is a best Batman and it has always been Kevin Conroy, may he rest in peace. Batman as a character might be cool in live action, but Batman is a comic book character: Animation is the only medium that can truly do him justice. The work Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, Kevin Conroy, and more put into building this Dark Knight for Batman: The Animated Series (1992) is amazing. I always dug the Art Deco. What's more is that he shined even more when contrasted with the rest of the Justice League in the animated series Justice League (2001). Putting him next to Superman every week somehow showed us even more of what made Batman, Batman. When I think of Batman, Kevin Conroy's is usually who I think of.

Forgive the deception; but I'm not about to write about Batman and somehow forget to mention the best Batman. To show I mean well, let me share something else:

My Favourite Batman: Robert Pattinson

Yes, Kevin Conroy is the best Batman, but Robert Pattinson is my favourite. He's the most realistic and most grounded Batman to date. He's also the darkest. The Gotham Matt Reeves and team built is reflected in all of the characters of The Batman (2022); including Robert Pattinson's. This Batman isn't apart from the rest of Gotham. He's just as dark and twisted as the monsters he fights. I can't wait to see what other stories Matt Reeves and Robert tell together.

Unless...

There is a way to make your journey easier, you only have to buy a travel packet from us with the money you were buried with, or if you were really a good person on life, you coud even get a ticket to the number 9, our deluxe express train, "To the land of the eternal rest in 4 minutes instead of 4 years".

A Dead aesthetic for a Dead World.

On your journey you'll experience the many wonders that this land has to offer, all of them presented on a beautyfull "Art Deco" arquitecture mixed with the Aztec roots of this world.

Your first stop is the Capital of the Land of The Dead, "El Marrow" were the D.O.D offices are located, full of souls that have abandoned their journey or just work in hopes of some day being able to afford a better travel package, today is "Dia de Muertos" so, why don't stop and enjoy the festivities?

When I said the compass on the Excelsior cane™ was gonna come in handy I wasn't liying, you will be needing it if you plan on entering our next destination, "The Petrified Forest", the most Dangerous part of your Jorney* a labyrinth of caves and branching paths full of creatures so deadly it woud scare even the toughest Australian fauna.

Take a Walk 06/30/2023

Welcome back to my daily walk diaries. Today we walked around between 5th ave and Park Ave because I was going to check out the Morgan Library & Museum (which if you live in NYC and you didn't know they have free friday's, they do). Anyways I was a little early for the entry time so I walked around and here were the buildings that caught my eye. If you want to listen to the music I was listening to while you read this, I made a playlist of it. Buckle in, this might be a long one.

Edit: As I was writing this entry I accidentally deleted ~1.5 hrs of work so Im going to keep this rewrite real brief. sry :/

The Robb House

Built 1892

Architect: Stanford White

Fellow Architect/architectural critic of the time Russel Sturgis (who I love) said of this building, "not a palace, but a fit dwelling house for a first-rate citizen."

Curious as to whether one of those medallions on the third floor was replaced since they're slightly different.

The Haviland Building/Lightolier Building/Morgan Lofts

Built 1912, unknown architect

The interesting split facades and bell tower are without a doubt what grabbed my eye.

Funny enough they also stood out on the back of the building when I took a trip around the block without even realizing they were the same building!

Next we have Tiffany & Co.'s second building, built after their previous cast-iron store at Union Square, and as a posthumous completion in honor of Tiffany founder, Charles Tiffany.

Built 1905

Architect: Stanford White! (yes again)

Just look at those Corinthian orders! This building is massive.

(Now is probably a good time to bring up my camera situation.) I've been shooting these on my iPhone 8 mainly because my only other camera is film, and because of it's convenience. However I may end up getting another camera so that my pictures don't come out with such poor quality. (I wish I remember how I worded this during the first take of this post, it was much better)

This is the CUNY Graduates Building, formerly known as its original identity the B. Altman department store. The past 3 buildings in fact were part of a push up 5th ave from Barclay's St downtown where Haviland's, Tiffany's, and Altman all had stores previously.

Built 1906

Architect: Trowbridge & Livingston

The back of the Altman building has this interesting moment where seemingly 3 portions of the building meet. I say 3 instead of the obvious division of the top addition only because if you look closely at the roof overhang on the left, it turns 90 degrees into the building before the 4th window in.

Regardless this transition between is artfully done both between the front and the back, as well as between the base and the upper addition in the reference but not direct copying of window/facade themes.

The Stewart Building

Built 1914

Architect: Whitney Warren

(Bonus picture of the proximity to the Empire State Building)

Right across the street from the Tiffany building lies this beautifully ornamented loft/department building with terracotta tiles said to resemble Josiah Wedgwood jasperware pottery.

Before we get to the Chrysler building this building caught my eye with it's geometric ornamentation on the facade of the building, which I assumed was to fit in amongst the foothills of such an icon in Art Deco Architecture.

The Icon in question, The Chrysler Building.

Architect: William Van Allen

There is a wealth of knowledge on the internet about this art deco beauty, but I'm just going to give you my brief takeaway.

First, that entry way!!! I'm in love, its so grand and those angles are so pleasing to look at. There is one on each side of the building facing the street and boy oh boy it does not lose it's charm the second time you see it.

I also wanted to point out that, um, the base of the building is not centered????? I had literally no idea prior to this but if you look, in the third picture there are three bays of windows to the right of the center and five bays to the left. No your eyes aren't tricking you that's really how it looks in person.

In the tune of imperfections to such a seemingly pristine design, the backwall isn't actually perpendicular to the road or to the rest of the building. It wanders off at some other angle as seen in the fourth picture.

I give it a 9/10 still, it's imperfections are even more reason to love it. They give it an organic beauty that art deco even tends to reference and emphasize, the beauty in natural forms.

Right around the corner of the Chrysler Building is Tudor City, and here are just some highlights. In the order of most difficult things to photograph, these buildings are all built up in a style I like to call the princess tower style with an elaborate penthouse on top. Here are some of the highlights of this group of blocks on the east side.

I think being a simblr we all have our fair share of frustrating experiences of crashing, pink soup, or other issues, particularly on large and exquisite lots. This is quite unfortunate as the fear of these issues has essentially narrowed the potential of simming. Luckily, I think I have figured out how to run the game smooth and stable on a modern laptop with moderately powerful CPU and graphics card. It turns out that the game can handle much more stuff than it appears. So I think maybe I should share some tips here, which might come handy if you happen to have downloaded one of my lots (for example, this one). I am sure many simblrs have their own tricks or are already doing these, but there are always people who might benefit from these tips. So here are my two cents:

(1) Use the 4GB patch by NTCore. According to the description of this tool, it allows the game's .exe to use 4 GB of RAM, instead of 2 GB, which is a limit for games designed with 32-bit OS. This increases stability and performance significantly.

(2) All game files take up bits of the RAM when you play the game and load anything (from the neighborhood to the lot, from characters to any piece of cc). However, not everything is needed at all time. After all, the sims 2 is not a seamless world like the sims 3. So, the idea is to minimize the amount of loading unrelated to the gameplay. For example, I always build a new lot in a testing hood, which contains only a small number of lots and characters. Thus, loading into the neighborhood is extremely fast and it also does not use up the precious RAM.

(3) Likewise, if you spend 15-30 min on the loading screen alone, this usually means your downloads folder can use some trimming. Ironically, a larger D-folder means your game can simultaneously handle FEWER items during gameplay. What I suggest is that you should divide the D-folder. Keep only a small core set of commonly used mods (by "commonly used", I mean the mods that creators often use as master meshes or recoloring basis, this should also minimize blue-flashing) in the folder and switch among the others stored somewhere else when you play different lots. The file size of my folder seldom exceeds 10 GB and I find it quite adequate for my purpose (and again this saves tremendous amount of time in loading).

(4) Of course, this requires you to keep track of the mods you use on different lots and anticipate what you might need in a new lot. If, additionally, you categorize and sub-folder every cc along with previews like I do, you can maximize the amount of cc you can actually use in the game. But even with a very crude D-folder division, you can play a downloaded lot with ease -- just put the packaged cc in a separate folder from your core set of cc (similarly, your CAS cc, storytelling cc, and neighborhood deco cc should be put in separate folders) and load the game with just these (do not load other lots as you would lose the cc on those lots). This also minimizes chances of mod conflicts.

(5) Before first loading a lot, turn on testingcheatsenabled. During the final loading process, you can detect and delete any potential conflicting items, so that when you actually enter the lot there won't be any item creating issues.

Yes i'm one of the ones using that set because youtube told me too.

(If I might be so bold to ask, i'm specifically i'm using Malzeno armor, the boots, and the sailor hat, in an attempt to heal during afflicted quests, and maybe get a little bit of bonus damage in because I'm running insect Glaive and insect glaive is ...sorta weakish. Do you think it would be a good idea to try for some sort of elemental build, or status ailment build instead of the quario ability?)

Honestly I'm more of the mind that you should do what works best for you.

So many people get roped into making these Perfect Max DPS Builds by people who call themselves experts when most players don't need to speedrun quests.

Y'know what skill I'm fishing for when melding talismans? Spiribird's Call. When I was playing the demo and I'd just (seemingly) randomly get a spiribird effect, I thought that was wicked. It seems convenient and saves me running around the whole map. I don't care about the "Two level 2 deco slot/weakness exploit/attack boost" God Meld that people are/were so desperate for.

And more often than not, the person trying to make this perfect build work either struggles or just isn't having fun. Like, people rave about sticky bowgun builds but I just can't stand them. Maybe in the right hands they can melt monsters, but I'd rather just poke them in the face with lance because I can quickly react to telegraphs to be able to block or counter without losing uptime. But that's just me.

I've heard people say that elemental damage isn't that strong in Rise compared to previous iterations like World, but I'm not 100% sure. I make sure to have one of each element for my chosen weapons so I can adapt to each of them, since more damage is still more damage, no matter how little.

What I would suggest is if you're interested in an elemental build but you're not sure how well it would work, just give it a try. See what you think. Test both builds against the same monster/quest and assess which is more satisfactory for you. Perhaps a combo of both -- keep the Qurio ability but slot in some extra elemental decos.

It's most important to find a playstyle that works for you. Because you're the one doing it, after all.

Omg! I saw you briefly mentioned Tomorrow in an ask and I just finished the show. I have so many thoughts about it and not sure if they’re all good but I would love to hear your opinion about the overall show (especially the distinct costume design of each character and the set design!!). For a show that navigated some heavy material — it was full of such bright color and fun fashion decisions! Unsure if you talk about shows but I thought to ask because you always provide such interesting and thoughtful critiques.

THE COSTUME DESIGN IN TOMORROW!!!!!! it's soooooooooooo good it was one of the things that kept me watching bc yes there some glaringly obvious problems with the script. the production/set design are excellent too, especially for jumadeung. literally framing it as a company is a.....choice, but visually framing it with art deco style architecture a la the chrysler building is a smart way to keep it feeling outside time, because our brains still interpret art deco as a relatively modern style because of its scarcity and association with wealth, but in reality art deco is approaching it's centennial in just a couple of years.

ok i'm gonna talk about some major plot beats so spoiler warning for anyone who hasn't finished the show or cares about that kind of thing.

tbh i actually think the best costume design was in the scenes with all the team leaders because they were so quick and so infrequent but each of them had such a clear signature that tbh i spent like five minutes stopping and starting that first intro scene where we see everyone just to try and pick up all the little details.

other than that though, they do such a good job with koo ryeon, joong-gil and ryung-gu and interpreting how very old/essentially immortal characters would interpret clothing and what they would be comfortable in. jun-woong is fine, but the show itself kind of acknowledges by the back half that really he's the vehicle for the rest of their stories, so imo his design choices are all intentionally wallflower-y. but koo ryeon, joong-gil, and ryung-gu all share some key character traits: they're all extremely loyal, dedicated, defensive, AND they all lived their formative lives pre the invention of the zipper and stretch fabric. i know this sounds like a very weird point to make, but trust me on this one, i'll get to it. and all three of these characters embody all of these traits in their clothing. many of the creature comforts that we associate with fashion are very very modern, think within the last 100-150 years. zippers? the 1910s. spandex/lycra/synthetic stretch fabrics? 1958. hell, even the concept of sportswear and leisure clothing only started cropping up in the mid 1800s. for a lot of cultures and for long periods of history, clothing consisted of a lot of layers and a fair amount of internal structure, by virtue of fabric being a solid weave. for a significant portion of their lives, all three of these characters were wearing anywhere between two and probably five layers at all times, with koo ryeon and joong-gil for about 250yrs longer and also with much more intricacy due to their higher class. clothing plays a very big part into how someone presents themselves to the world, and it can be a protective measure. this might be a bit difficult for some to understand for some, especially in our modern 'comfort first' fashion culture, but the structure and weight of a lot of layers and the rituals around getting dressed a specific way can be both a defensive mechanism and also a physical comfort. you see it with older generations and their likelihood of wearing older styles/styles that were 'on trend' in their youth; think grannies who still get their hair permed and put on lipstick every time they leave the house, or someone like my grandfather, who never stopped wearing the same style of highwaisted slacks and dress shirts from the early 60s. and i think it's a very fair trait to extrapolate to characters who 1) have had particularly traumatic lives, 2) have spent a very long time wearing the same thing, and 3) have a textually noted extended/different understanding of time.

let's start with joong-gil, who exclusively wears a three piece suit post-becoming a reaper. this means he's wearing at least three well structured layers, and i'd be willing to bet that he'd be the type to wear a singlet/underlayer as well, which brings that total up to four. he's also frequently shown wearing an additional jacket (five layers) and gloves, another further barrier. given the fact that jumadeung appears to have 'westernized' aesthetically when korea was freed from japanese colonial rule***, three piece suits were still standard business attire. and he's very strict about his own dress code, he's either in white shirt and three piece or a black shirt and three piece. obviously this is also a physical manifestation of his discipline and dedication of the 'rules', as we can see that when he deviates from that uniform it is as a specific character point for him. the most notable instances of this are in the last episode, where he's wearing a turtleneck (but still a waistcoat) when jun-woong goes to try and reason with him, and then again later in the episode when joong-gil is taking his punishment in his shirtsleeves. and then for a third time at the very end of the episode, where his black three piece has been exchanged for a grey one, signalling his softening and the merging of his two selves (his pre-reaper self that wore mostly lighter colours, and his post-reaper self that wore mostly black).

unsurprisingly, koo ryeon is also a very defensive dresser. all the same observations from joong-gil apply here, but with koo ryeon instead of her being a dedicated rule-follower, her dedication manifests as rule-breaking in order to achieve her goals; as you can see she wears a lot of colours in counter to joong-gil's monochrome. but i think the most interesting of her visual 'rule-breaking' is that she doesn't particularly follow the convenions of 'feminine' coded dressing. this is most noticable in when the rm team goes on 'assignment' in different workplaces, where ryeon will wear nearly identical suits to jun-woong and ryung-gu (interestingly, it's pointedly not her wearing men's clothes, she's always wearing a 'female' version even if the cuts are virtually identical. you can tell bc the button closures are opposite). she also dresses very 'modestly', she doesn't show any skin at all and more notably, she doesn't wear anything form fitting. she favours boxy and bulky shapes with a predominance for longer lines and wider shapes on her lower body. now there's two reasons to speculate for this: the first is the same as for joong-gil, that she's very used to layers and a specific silhouette, especially considering that the shape of female hanbok is not even close to being form-fitting and has heavy skirting. and the second is that her trauma is directly tied to people's perception of her femininity. literally the reason ryeon died is because she was stigmatized for 'using her femininity to get out of an adverse situation' even though we are explicitly shown that that is emphatically not the case. thus her rejection of more western feminine silhouettes is directly related to how she wants there to be no question that the reason she is so accomplished at her job is purely because of her skills, and not for any other reason.

and ryung-gu! more similar to koo ryeon in style than joong-gil, but again they all share that propensity for numerous heavy and obscurative layers that echoes a more traditional style of dress. because ryung-gu is younger (literal age wise but also i'm pretty sure he died younger as well) there's a little more flexibility in his materials and cuts, and because he's of a lower class than koo ryeon and joong-gil, he tends towards less formal shapes too. although i would not describe koo ryeon as a 'formal' dresser, she wears a lot of blazers and two piece suits, as well as heavy wools and fabrics that are generally associated with business and formalwear. ryung-gu however, almost exclusively picks his shapes from garments that have a working class or blue collar origin; lots of jeans, informal but still structured jackets like bombers and denim jackets, and a fair amount of casual sportswear, practical wear, and synthetic fabrics. and although ryung-gu is framed as being rebellious like koo ryeon, unlike ryeon his rebellion always comes as an active response to something that upsets his internal or external systems. as a child he is dutifully and lovingly reverent of his mother, she's the centre of his world, and even as a reaper he isn't shown to have any real issues with authority. sure he clocks out right at eight hours, but that's not being rebellious, that's just following the rules to a technicality. it's only when his mother is taken from his life and he loses that external structure that he actively 'becomes rebellious', and even then i think rebellion is the wrong word; it's actually just self destructive behaviour that is 'morally' grey according to the wider societal system. when his story arc finally concludes and he has his mother back in his life (sort of), he visually sheds some of his more 'rebelliously' attributes by cutting and redying his hair to the 'standard masculine' haircut and showing up to work in a suit and/or less flamboyant patterns and garments. but he does still keep the same number of layers and shapes as he did before.

***when japan surrendered in 1945 it ceded all its territories to the us, so really korea was actually just colonized again. you can see in the korean war vet episode that in flashbacks joong-gil is wearing a western style suit as a reaper, which would have been between 1950-53, but in the comfort women episode he's still wearing hanbok, which would have been at the earliest 1930ish. also it would makes sense logistically as jumadeung is supposed to mirror the 'real' world. i also think this is where the framing of it as a 'company' comes from as well.
