so, you've heard shows be recommended because they had gay characters. you don't really know what they're actually about though, and don't know if they'd be something you'd be into and are worried about spoilers. here's spoiler free plot summaries of em!
The Owl House
The Owl House starts out as a typical teenage girl goes into a fantasy realm story, but with a twist. Actions have consequences. The protagonist is a girl named Luz Noceda, who was being sent to a camp to make her behave normally by her mother after causing too much trouble at school. She ends up finding a place she's always dreamed of: a fantasy world. A world where everyone's so much weirder than she is. And she thinks, maybe if I don't belong out there, maybe people will like me here. Maybe I can be special here.
It's a story about found family, propaganda, erased history, living with disability, religious trauma, and neurodivergence. It's fundamentally a show about people who's brains work differently finding each other and making a family that treats them right. Definitely my favorite of the ones on this list. It's about people who've been oppressed being pissed about it and about finding yourself again after giving up on everyone around you for so long. It's basically a show about being a minority and trying to be understood and to understand yourself in the process. It's about growing up neurodivergent and how isolating it feels and figuring yourself out. It's about repairing broken relationships and parents who fuck up. And it's just. Such a love letter to anyone who was the weird kid in school. It's sad and heartbreaking and also so hopeful, and it's wonderful.

She Ra and the Princesses Of Power
Adora was raised in the Horde since she was a baby, being fed propaganda about how cruel the princesses were. After learning how the horde actually was, though, she defects. But there's one problem. Her best friend, Catra, stays behind. Adora finds a sword that can transform her into She Ra, and might be the key to figuring out who she really is, while Catra takes her place as force captain.
It's a story about abuse, at the end of the day. Adora and Catra were stuck in a golden child and scapegoat dynamic, despite how much they care about each other. This leads to them knowing everything about each other but not understanding it. There's a fundamental disconnect between them, because both of their traumas are completely different. They have complete misconceptions about each other. Even in their initial split, they both have completely different perceptions of what's going on and why the other is upset. It's not a story about magic princesses, it's about the cycle of abuse and what makes it so complicated. Does it have flaws? Yeah. But ultimately I really really enjoy it, and when it does something right it does something RIGHT. Get through season one, it starts kids show-y but it gets very good during later s1.

Steven Universe
Steven Universe is a sins of the father story. Steven is the son of the leader of the rebel group The Crystal Gems, who's name was Rose Quartz. He navigates the confusion of being half gem and half human, as well as trying to figure out the mess of the rebellion and what his mother left behind. He's constantly in her shadow, for better or for worse.
It's a story about grief. How it impacts relationships, how it taints history, how it impacts family. It has some definite flaws, but ultimately it's about very flawed people who have lost so many people in their life trying to cope with it. Trying to handle what they lost and trying to adjust to life without them. It's about how expectations fuck a kid up and about agency and just a show about complicated relationships in general, at the end of the day. Also, it has some FANTASTIC music.

Nimona
Nimona is a story about a guy who gets framed for murder. His name is Ballister Boldheart, a commoner who hoped to become a knight. It seemed everyone was waiting to watch him fail, so it was no surprise when he was the immediate target. Heavily injured and away from the man he loves, he's left alone trying to figure out a way to prove his innocence- until a strange kid comes into his life. This kids name is Nimona, and while he is intent on proving his innocence, she gave up on being anything but a villain a long time ago.
It's about deconstructing the model minority myth, trans rage, propaganda, and with a healthy dose of "FUCK the police".
Content warnings: Heavy injury, on screen suicide attempt, flashing lights

Catra has a really pretty singing voice, but only a select few heard it when she was growing up in the horde. She mostly sang in the shower when she was alone or with only Adora which was, decidedly, not often in the common showers. Lonnie once heard it when she snuck in, but Catra hissed at her and threatened her life over it and she only tells Rogelio and he doesn’t really believe her so it doesn’t go far.
When the war is over and she hold Adora at night alone in Adora’s- their room, she tangles her hands in her hair and scratches Adora’s scalp and hums little tunes to her to help her sleep. The melody is usually the same, a little floaty tune that sits well across her range. Adora tries to stay awake to hear more but it always puts her to sleep.
When Glimmer starts to sleep in their room as well she’s startled by the sound. She’s holding Adora and Catra is holding her and she feels the rumble of her lower range against her back. There’s no words but it’s very clearly meant to be a song. She says nothing that night, just listens to the most intimate part of Catra and drifts away but it stays on her mind for the next few weeks.
“Will you sing the words for me?” Glimmer asks finally, months after she begins sleeping in their bed. She’s not there every night, but on nights when she is she is always curious about the song. Catra is sitting up and Adora and Glimmer are spooning between her legs, using her as a pillow. They’re not sleeping, just cuddling, but Catra is already humming so it just comes to Glimmer to ask.
Her humming stops and a blush rises to her cheeks as she looks down at her girls. Both of them have maxed out on the puppy dog eyes at the question and it’s hard to resist.
“I… maybe another time.” Glimmer huffs but she cuddles back into Catra’s leg again all the same.
It’s late that same night and Glimmer and Adora are almost asleep when she begins her humming again.
“In the still, of the night. Are you still, feeling alright? You’re feeling alright.”
Adora and Glimmer both tense and listen intently to the sound of their lullaby coming from behind them.
“In the still, of your mind. Are you still, putting up a fight? Just tell me that I’m right.”
The song continues and Adora’s chest is clinched, her muscles tense with excitement. Glimmer on the other hand is completely relaxed listening to Catra’s voice.
“I handled you like broken porcelain, but really I'm the one that's delicate. I handled you like broken porcelain, but maybe I'm the one that's breaking.”
The last verse has Glimmer gripping to Adora’s night shirt as she hears the words leaving Catra’s lips. Something about it just hurts her, hearing how she’s feeling.
“Baby, lay your head down. Baby, I’m only in your dreams now.”
As she finishes the final chorus and goes back to humming, her girls roll over and turn the tides to hold her instead.
It doesn’t put them to sleep tonight but Adora thinks that she would miss sleep more often if it meant hearing Catra sing to her more often.

I just want to take a moment to wonder / baffle at how different fandoms can be. It seems like some things are constant between all fandoms - an abundance of smutfic and art, self-insert and OC character-creation fun, people inserting characters into popular memes, people making the wildest aus (Let's fanart them as werewolves!" and the like). However, there are just such interesting differences.
In Spop fandom, I will never, NEVER get over how much visceral HATRED exists for Hordak on one "side" of the fandom and how much of the same kind of hatred exists for Catra on another "side" of the fandom. Additionally, discourse over Glimmer and etc.
It seems like all the people in this fandom (who haven't just said hang it all to just make cute fanart and funny comics) talk about are WAR CRIMES and "who deserves redemption more?" in a show that is clearly about restoration and kindness. Horde Prime's destroying planets aside, I can count the canonical deaths in this series ON ONE HAND. And everyone's upset at all of the war crimes committed in a largely non-lethal local-to-the-main-setting-planet war on this... almost utopian planet where we'd all probably like to live.
Meanwhile, over in Trigun fandom...
The body count is in the literal millions and not in passing mentions of genocide Jell-O at dinner, but in triumphant arms to the sky as a burning fleet of spaceships incinerate in the sky in a deliberate attempt at a genocide (not as a side-effect of ruling). Many on-screen deaths of characters you get to KNOW. There is this huge complex moral dilemma centered around the survival-needs of a population that depends upon sentient beings that are both dependent upon them and overused and abused by them. There's another huge complex moral dilemma revolving around the justification of lethal force vs. the prices of a life of chosen, ardent pacifism. It's not a Y-7 series by any means and the manga / comics version of it gets really super dark (yet somehow Trigun Stampede made the Tesla-arc even darker, bravo, I'm gonna be sick).
And yet the villains - from the mini-boss assassin characters to the ur-villain who LITERALLY WANTS TO DESTROY ALL OF HUMANITY and also wishes to manipulate his hero-brother to his side through severe traumatizing emotional torture... it's like... there are loads of people in this fandom who are "Oh, Millions Knives is my favorite character!" and it doesn't seem like anyone bats an eyelash. There are probably more fandom essays exploring Knives' side of things and why he feels the way he does and how his character-arc makes sense than even people in any way actively against him. Yes, most people in this fandom "side with Vash" (as do I), but it's like... we understand the villain here, or try to, and here's a fandom where people find sympathy for and "humanity" in the blatantly cruel person who on-screen slaughters swaths of people in some of the most gruesome ways possible. It's like, in this fandom, if someone's a Knives-fan, or a Legato-fan, or a Midvalley-fan, or even those of us who love the greatest villain of all, he who shines in the darkness, BRILLIANT DYNAMITES NEON!!! (oh, my two-episode wonder, missed you in Stampede oh so much, my sparkler-smoking baby...) it's like... no one cares? It's like "Yeah, they're great characters, aren't they?"
It's just so... different. In the non-fatal sparkly princess show, everyone's scrutinizing everyone else for liking characters who do (largely non-lethal) WAR CRIMES! and then the mature-anime/manga fandom I am in where there's this whole extinction of humanity and the uses of their adjacent created-resource-species at stake everyone's like... chill. And enjoying the villains - and different ones, at that, is NORMAL.

Chapter 13: Reunited
Lonnie woke up to the dinging of her datapad. It was Entrapta with a message telling them to return to Brightmoon with Imp. For someone who likes to talk so much, Entrapta speaks very little over text. Lonnie then went to Kyle and Rogelio and ‘lightly’ kicked them awake.
“Rise and shine you two, we have to make tracks to Brightmoon because Lord Hordak wants his baby back.” The two boys shot up at the mention of Hordak and swiftly gathered everything, including their precious cargo.
When the trio was tasked with caring for the creature Lonnie was very hesitant. Kyle of course fell in love with the brat at first sight and Rogelio followed swiftly. Lonnie however took a little more convincing but even she fell for the child’s charm. She could see how Hordak would like the little thing.
Thankfully, the group was not far from Brightmoon and the trip only took about three hours minus any short breaks that were mainly caused by Imp. When they arrived at Brightmoon they saw Hordak and Entrapta standing at the door. Entrapta had not changed at all, but Hordak was a whole nother story. Lonnie first noticed his eyes had turned Prime’s sickly lime green, then she noted how his hair was long and curly tied up in a braid. It was odd, to say the least.
When Imp saw his father he flew right into him nearly knocking him over in the process. Hordak took him into his arms and hugged him tightly along with Entrapta. The trio approached the happy family with Lonnie at the front.
“Lord Hordak, we have tried our best to keep Imp safe and we hope you are satisfied with our care of him.” Kyle stammered.
“Firstly, you do not need to call me by my title anymore, the Etherian Horde has been disbanded and it is safe to say my position as ruler of the Scorponi kingdom had been taken away so the title of Lord no longer fits my description. Secondly, I thank you for taking care of Imp in my absence, I am guessing, as Etherians put it, ‘owe you one’.”
“Don’t sweat it, we enjoyed having him.”
“I’m just sad I won’t see you again.” Kyle reached out to give Imp a small pat as Rogelio growled in agreement.
“Why don’t you come to stay with us in The Crypto Castle.”
Lonnie paused to think only for a brief moment. The group didn’t have any other place to go and The Crypto Castle did not sound too bad.”
“Do you two want to?”
The two boys quickly nodded.
“Yes, that sounds great Princess Entrapta. We thank you for your kindness.”
“Oh just call me Entrapta, you don’t need to be formal with me.”
The six then entered the castle to find the rest of the Alliance waiting inside the entrance. Scorpia was the first to break from the crowd, catching the former Horde soldiers in a massive hug.
“Oh, I missed you three! How are you?”
“We’re all good Scorpia.” Lonnie managed to pry herself from Scorpia meeting the eyes of Adora.
“Hi, Lonnie.”
“Hey, Adora.” Lonnie grabbed Adora’s wrist into a warrior’s handshake. Lonnie then caught the gaze of Catra who was looking at her nervously. Lonnie gave her a hard stare as she went back to Adora.
Throughout all of this, Imp stayed firmly planted on Hordak’s shoulder, welcoming the familiar height it gave him. Imp then saw Emily who was happily beeping as Imp flew over to her, happy as could be.

i am!! so curious about zuko’s redemption we all agree its more than iconic and essentially a blueprint now for any redemption but like what are?? the factors that softened us as viewers
like in a redemption arc that didn’t include iroh (yeah it probably wouldn’t exist but Pretend), iroh who we knew very early on was there to guide zuko towards goodness who vouches for and trusts in zuko’s ability to finally choose correctly, was he essential in allowing the viewers to maintain faith in zuko as well? without this external character planting and watering diligently the seeds of zuko’s potential redemption, would everything else be enough for us to finally root for him?
