This is the only post from my reddit account I will properly archive on this tumblr, as it is the only one that I think is truly interesting. I have had this post saved in drafts for 4 days before the deletion of my account so no one can find my cringey reddit. Enjoy!

Do you recognize this dog?

Chances are, if you were an animation fan or Disney fan in the mid 00s, you might. This is the story of that dog and how his film ultimately transformed into Bolt, the arguable first movie in the Disney revival era. No, seriously.

Lilo & Stitch & Chris Sanders

In the early to mid 90s Disney was releasing a slew of movies that were massively popular and successful for the company, an era that is collectively known by Disney and Animation fans as "The renaissance era" of Disney. However, by the late 90s and early 2000s, things began to shift for Disney, as strong competitors began to pop up, particularly Dreamworks and Pixar (which weren't out-right owned by Disney, just had movies presented by Disney at the time) were wowing audiences with CGI imagery and stories that went against the grain of typical Disney fare. To make things worse for Disney, they were now releasing films that were not the big box-office successes of past ones and did not gain the critical praise Disney once had.

A new smash success was needed, but it would take nothing short of a miracle to happen, a visit from an angel if you will.

Luckily that angel would come in the form of animator Chris Sanders, who had worked on Disney movies in the past before, but this movie would be his first director debut. This movie would transform and grow in a behind-the-scenes story that is amazing by itself, eventually releasing as Lilo & Stitch. Lilo & Stitch was just the success Disney needed at the time and now the animation world as well as Disney were looking forward to Sanders' next big move.

On August 16th 2004, Disney announced the creation of three new projects: A Day with Wilbur Robinson, Rapunzel Unbraided, and the main focus of this piece: American Dog. Then on August 10th, 2005, Disney revealed more about the production at that years SIGRAPH event including various pieces of concept art, a short looping animation of the central moment of the film alongside various locations, and a brief plot summary.

The comments on ain't it cool forums had some who were excited about the upcoming film...

and some that were more critical…

"Lilo and Stitch" was a bore... by Mr. Waturi I love a kids movies... "Iron Giant" and "Monsters, Inc." being my favorites. I actually walked out of "Lilo and Stitch." It was cute without being funny, animated without being interesting. The concept was fine, but the movie just dragged. The stills from this movie look nice, though. Looks like the same artist that creates the comic book about the polar bear and kid.

Oh Hell no. by Krahnos When are we going to grow up from overly cartoonized characters?Christ. I have sever reservations about this... whatever it is.

Despite a few criticisms, things were still looking up for American Dog, with many curious about how the director of "Lilo & Stitch" would follow up his wonderful story with another one. That answer would come from Jim Hill Media and would build up over the years from input from a variety of animators that had worked on the project or witnessed its production.

The plot

Henry, a famous TV dog, finds himself stranded in the Nevada desert. Out in the world for the first time, Henry's tidy life of scripted triumph has come to an end, and his 2,000 mile trek through the real world is just beginning. -Jim Hill

From the creator of Lilo & Stitch comes the charmingly twisted story of a Canine TV star who finds himself stranded in the most forsaken hundred miles of Nevada with an oversized bunny and a testy cat. -Disney

Henry is a dog that was adopted as a puppy by a Hollywood studio and grew up as an actor for a hit television spy series, starring a cast of characters inspired by Ocean's Eleven. The concept art seems to tell a specific "episode" of Henry playing poker and stealing all the money.

Henry seemingly has everything: fame, fortune, and star power.

However, Henry lacks a real home life as at the end of each filming session, Henry is locked up in a dark cage or room and his life is put on hold until the filming of the next episode.

To Henry, this is normal, so he believes that what he does during filming is real. Then one day, a stunt goes horribly wrong and Henry gets knocked out and ends up waking up on a train going towards Nevada. After years of being served hand and foot, going through "adventures" where he always wins, and living a skewed reality on a television set, Henry has no idea how to interact with real people or get along in the real world.

If Henry attempted something he thought he knew how to do due to his scripted adventures, such as drive a car, it would not work his way and would cause a terrible situation. So Henry needs as much help as he can get.

Luckily for Henry, he comes across this help in the form of Spig, an eye-patch wearing cat (that was radioactive in early concepts), and Mr. Buttons, a radioactive rabbit that was gigantic in early drafts.

The two live in a gas station with retirement savings stored in a giant dinosaur statue and, most importantly to Henry, a classic car hung in some Christmas wire.

Henry bribes the duo to drive him back home and the two agree to it, possibly due to Ruthie, a mutant zombie girl-scout that stalks the duo and tries to kill them each night.

Along the way, the trio come across a variety of odd and quirky characters. Some of the most-documented ones were Jo Night/Knight, a Vegas waitress that meets Henry in the elevator of a safari-themed hotel. She could have potentially "used her movements" to distract a would-be assailant.

There was also The Lady in Black, an ex-circus performer who was holed up in a mansion located in the swamps of Georgia. Alongside her may have been a fez-wearing knife-throwing gorilla, though one render might indicate he was downgraded into a background prop at some point in development.

There would have also been several other characters as well that have been showcased in concept art and renders, though their involvement in the story have not been documented or discovered.

Those 2,000 miles back home would be filled from challenges, not just by the characters that the trio would meet but also the situations the trio would get into with each other! But in the end, perhaps Henry would have realized he doesn't want his Hollywood life back and finds himself living life with lifelong friends. This last bit is just a guess though.

After reading all of this, you may already have an idea what happened, but let's move forward through this story.

How American Dog became Bolt

After a couple years of moves that brought down the value of the Disney company, Eisner was kicked out of Disney and a new CEO was given the keys to the kingdom. Meet Bob Iger, starting out as ABC's person to conduct menial labor on TV sets, he would soon grow in the ranks into becoming head of ABC entertainment. When ABC was bought out by Disney in 1995, Iger was too brought in, and then would once again grow in the ranks within the larger Disney company. When the "save Disney" campaign was well over with, picking Iger was a natural conclusion for shareholders. Iger's early moves were specifically done to fix the reputation of Disney, with the largest being to fix the broken relationship between Disney and Pixar at the time. To do so he offered to buy out Pixar for 7.4 billion dollars (that's $10,272,431,932.45 in 2022 money). As an added bonus, John Lasseter, one of the heads of Pixar at the time, would now become head of Disney Animation. Some point afterwards, Lasseter went around to see how the progress was going on some of Disney's recent projects. That's when he saw American Dog's progress, after seeing two screenings of the film, Lasseter reportedly wrote down suggestions on how to fix the film. Sanders, not wanting to change his passion project, rejected all the suggestions, and so Sanders was dropped off his own project.

Take this with a large, large grain of salt, but one alleged insider in Cartoon Brew's comments described the screenings:

Man, this is so annoying. Amid, someone....please, SOMEONE get their hands on the latest story reels of American Dog. Someone from Disney steal it and give it to someone and let people watch it online. Why? Because it was AWFUL!!! I saw the latest reel (yes, I worked at Disney then) and it was the most disjointed, confusing, quirky, weird, unmarketable movie Ive seen. It was rife with plot problems, the characters were unappealing (the dog looked like a miniature moose for eff's sakes, and his giant nose took over the screen so you couldnt see his eyes, no matter what you did) Sanders was never around, and when he was, he wasnt leading, just giving weird notes and then would disappear for weeks. A-dog had ONE thing going for it, good concept art. Big effin deal. And thats fine for a film when its in early production, but this was ready for primetime, it was supposed to be final, and at the last possible second, Lasseter came in and saved the day. Bolt is WAAY better. Had Sanders stayed on the project, it would have either been severely delayed (which we couldnt afford, the execs woulda pulled the plug) or been abysmal and closed WDAS down. As it turns out, Bolt is the best animated film in a long long time from Disney (some think better than wall-e or ratatouille or the incredibles, no joke), and it just fell victim to a dumb fan-fueled movie that scored a 40-something on rottentomatoes* and bad marketing. To an outsider watching the marketing, Bolt looks like trash, but after seeing it you realize its a VERY good film. Im sorry (very sorry) for ranting, but I HATE seeing people ignorantly trashing a film, and comparing it to a film they know NOTHING about, and have built up in their mind as something amazing, when in reality it was a garbage film being directed by an absentee, flighty director who was given plenty of chances to fix his film, and didnt. Lasseter didnt pull the plug on A-Dog because it was quirky, he pulled the plug because it just wasnt working and Sanders wouldnt fix it. And it wasnt just John's opinion, we ALL disliked it, even those of us whole liked Chris very much personally. Now, this is just my opinion, but I hope I didnt ruffle too many feathers, but I just wanted you guys to know there IS another side to the story.

The book Creativity Inc.:overcoming the unseen forces that stand in the way of true inspiration gave more information on what specifically went wrong during the screenings (as well as being a more legitimate source).

A key moment in this evolution came in the fall of 2006, nine months after the merger, at a Story Trust meeting in Burbank. It happened after a fairly awful screening of American Dog) a film structured around a famous and pampered canine actor (think Rin Tin Tin) who believed that he was the superhero character he played on TV. When he found himself stranded in the desert, he had to face for the first time how his tidy, scripted life had not pre- pared him for reality-that he, in fact, had no special powers. That was all well and good, but somewhere along the way, the plot had also come to include a radioactive, cookie-selling Girl Scout zom- bie serial killer. I'm all for quirky ideas, but this one had metasta- sized. The movie was still finding its way, to say the least, so John started off the meeting, as he often does, by focusing on the things he liked about it. He also indicated he saw some problems, but he wanted to give the Disney folks the chance to take the lead on those, so instead of digging in and getting too specific, he threw the meet- ing open to the floor. Throughout the meeting the comments stayed at a superficial level, remaining strangely upbeat-judging by the commentary, you would have never known the film was in disarray. Afterward, one of the Disney directors confided to me that many people in the room had major reservations about the film but didn't say what they thought because John had kicked things off so posi- tively. Taking their cues from him, they didn't want to go against what they thought he liked. Not trusting their own instincts, they held back. John and I immediately arranged a dinner with the directors- and told them that if they ever resorted to that kind of thinking. again, we'd be finished as a studio. Not long after, Disney would have a crisis of its own on Amer- a ican Dog I mentioned earlier the emergence of a serial killer story- line, which while we prided ourselves on always remaining open to new ideas-seemed a tad dark for a family film. Despite our misgivings, though, we decided to give the movie a chance to evolve. Finding a movie's throughline always takes time, we told ourselves. But after ten months of Story Trust meetings-and very little im- provement we concluded that the only option was to restart the project. We asked Chris Williams, a veteran story artist best known for Mulan and The Emperor's New Groove, and Byron Howard, then a supervising animator on Lilo and Stitch, to step in as its di- rectors. Immediately, they began reconceiving the movie. The serial killer was tossed, and the movie was renamed Bolt.

Another reason given as to why American Dog had to be reworked was an inability to rationalize Henry's actions.

Chris Sanders: It had a lot to do with rationalizing what this dog was. “Can he drive a car or can he not?” The answer was yes and no. He can make the car go but, no, he can’t drive. And that would become a big sticking point. In my mind, that idea wasn’t that weird, it was pretty simple; in other people’s minds at the studio, it wasn’t making any sense. Ultimately I was asked, “Does he know he’s a dog or not?” The answer I gave was, “He knows he’s a dog, but has a warped idea what a dog is and does.” That answer didn’t sit well. They wanted a “yes” or “no.” Later on I equated it to Buzz Lightyear, who did NOT know he was a toy. So the “yes,” or “no,” on that would have been a simple, resounding, “no.” Very clear. My dog was more subtle, like Stitch. And that wasn’t going to get through their system. So after a long, hard session with the exec, I was without a simple answer, and I was like, “Okay, I don’t know what to tell you.”

There have been also statements from Jim Hill that Lasseter "hated Lilo & Stitch", as well as a comment from animator Melody Izza about Lasseter not liking "Sanders sensibilities".

The story of Sanders being dropped off of American Dog spread far and wide, with many critiquing the move. No matter if the story is just one of these or a combination of the three, Lasseter needed to comment on why he had to rework the movie.

Asked about the episode, Mr. Lasseter abruptly interrupted an interview to confer with publicists, asking “What can I say here?” After a brief discussion Mr. Lasseter explained that Pixar often added or replaced a director if a film needed help. “Chris Sanders is extremely talented, but he couldn’t take it to the place it had to be,” he said carefully. Mr. Sanders, who is negotiating his exit from Disney, declined to comment. “John doesn’t force his solutions on you,” said Brad Bird, who directed “The Incredibles” and is close to Mr. Lasseter. “But that doesn’t mean he is going to go quietly.”

Lasseter said more about the situation afterwards in an interview with slashfilm

Sure, yeah. You know when the merger of Disney and Pixar happened and Bob Iger and Steve Jobs asked me to be the Chief Creative Officer at Disney, as well as Pixar, you know I came in and there was a handful of movies that had been kind of started down here. "American Dog" was one of them. And I always thought that the premise of that had a lot of potential for heart, you know the character that it is a dog that stars in this kind of action TV show. And he thinks he has these real powers, and so he gets separated from the TV show and learns that he, in fact, doesn't have any powers and he's just a regular dog. But he has no idea about how to be a regular dog, and so he's taught how to be a regular dog by a cat. But it's a deeper story about this friendship, and loyalty and unconditional love that dogs have for their owners. And I think that I had put great possibilities. It's one of those difficult situations where we've done this a couple times before with "Toy Story 2" and with "Ratatouille", where the potential of film, it's just we were having kind of creative differences with reaching that potential, and so we brought on Chris Williams and Byron Howard, two young guys here to direct it, because they're so funny, but they also have a tremendous amount of heart in them. And it's always a difficult situation, because I love Chris Sanders. He's a great guy and brilliant talent, and it's always sort of difficult, but it's the right thing to do for the movie.

And so, Chris Williams and Byron Howards were put on to become the film's new directors. Several changes to the project were made afterwards. The first and main one was de-anthropomorphizing the main trio, as making the animals behave more like real animals was seen as key for Lasseter in order to fulfill a compelling suspension of disbelief. Henry no longer starred in a James Bond/Ocean's Eleven inspired spy show, now he was the star of a cheesy superhero adventure. The cat and rabbit also lose their radioactive past. The rabbit changed species into a hamster inspired by Lasseter's pet chinchilla and the cat changed genders. The trio also got new names, no longer were they "Henry", "Spig" and "Mr. Buttons", now they were "Bolt", "Mittens" and "Rhino". The main female characters, Jo Knight and The Lady in Black, were no more. Now the main female character was Penny, a teenage girl that Bolt gained a bond to, unaware that she was just an actor doing her part. This was also seen as important to Lasseter, to give a more compelling reason why the dog would want to return to Hollywood. The mid-west setting was also changed, in order to not cause fatigue with Pixar's own Cars, as both American Dog and Cars would have shared a similar setting with a similar premise around the same release time frame.

In fact, seemingly the only things not changed from the original production were the base concept: a celebrity dog, unaware that the show he's working for isn't reality, has to find the help of two other animals in order to reach home and learns about how real life works along the way. The casting of John Travolta as the main character also stayed, with the other two reported voice actors, Thomas Haden Church and Mario Cantone, being dropped off of the project. It is unknown why Travolta got to stay, but my best guess is that he was too expensive to drop once the project changed. Its also believed the train scene in the final movie

Fan and animator reactions

Reception to the change within fan circles was full of criticism, not helped by the previews for the reworking, known as "Bolt", giving the animal characters radical redesigns that many felt were generic, especially compared to the art presented for American Dog.

A few of my favorite comments from the aint it cool forums for example:

by Ribbons Eesh. Bolt! doesn't look anything like American Dog used to. In fact it looks more like Krypto the Superdog than anything else. by R*tardo_Montalban Bolt looks like a tool of the man. He's the type of dog that plays off rebellious, but only rebels in socially and politically acceptable ways. "Let's all have an adventure fellas! But only to attain a lofty yet admirable goal, and we'll make friends along the way." by AndreZX Had to jump in on this. I just saw the production still from Bolt, looked it up and found that this is what happened to American Dog! I was devastated! This new look is 100% generic (although the painterly style of it is very impressive, I'm not impressed with the character designs at all.) I fell in love with the American Dog project the first time I saw that shot of him and the cat with the eyepatch in the convertible, and then they turned around and chopped it into this cookie-cutter crap. Lilo and Stitch is probably one of my favorite Disney movies, and it pains me to think of what they've thrown away to go with Bolt. Oh well. Only time will tell.

Many fans were also angry at the choice of Miley Cyrus as Penny, the human girl that had a bond to Bolt, due to Hannah Montana Mania at the time. The casting of Miley made many feel like Disney was trying to cash in more on the popularity of the show. The reveal that she had re-dubbed over another voice actress (Chloe Grace Moretz) for the majority of the film (Chloe's voice is used in the beginning of the movie) did not help matters much. Miley also reportedly turned away many young boys from Bolt according to some comments on Cartoon Brew:

By Annabel Cole This ties in to the point above about boys avoiding Bolt because Miley Cyrus was there. In the past ten years, Disney has shackled itself to highly visible "girly" brands: not brands that appeal to girls first but also draw boys, like Kim Possible, Pepper Ann, and Nickelodeon's Aex Mack before them, but brands that focus on girly-girls in hot pink dancing, dating, preening, shopping, and singing, either in "real life" (some Disney Channel series) or abstract fairy tale worlds. By Charles And then there was Miley Cyrus. Oh, she did a fine job; that’s not my problem. My problem was that I stood in the theatre lobby watching as Cyrus’ presence caused some older boys to change their minds about wanting to see the film. “It’s got Miley Cyrus; it’s a girl movie.”

Animators who worked on American Dog or saw its production that have spoken about it have been mostly positive. Daniel Chong felt like it was one of the great losses in animation history, but also discussed disbelief looking back towards how anyone would have thought the movie would have "made it" due to American Dog's more adult elements. Specifically the casino scene would have had Henry shot off a gun multiple times and the entire character of Jo Night was seen as questionable. Mark Anthony Austin described American Dog as "the movie that Disney were foolish enough to terminate" and thought its cancellation was "a sad thing". Melody Iza saw a tour of the studio and a slew of concept art for American Dog and thought it was silly, fun and interesting. Dan Platt described one of his models as such: "This high res CG production model of a Ford Thunderbird was originally created for American Dog but ultimately scrapped when the scenes, um…, movie changed." Perhaps I am looking too much/deep into this sentence, but to me it seems like negatively critiquing the film's plot in a way that wouldn't set off too many employer alarm bells.

However, many critics and audiences loved Bolt. The movie was also reportedly amazing in 3D according to wdwmagic. While Bolt had a lousy box office opening with tough competition, Bolt made enough money afterwards in DVD sales to please Lasseter and move forward in the future of Disney. Leading to the Disney revival era. If not downright kick-starting it.

Aftermath

Sanders was reportedly heartbroken and relieved after being kicked off from American Dog.

An individual who knows a lot about the situation wrote to take issue with the statement that Chris Sanders felt "relief" at being taken off AMERICAN DOG. Sanders had apparently been informed before last Wednesday that he was no longer going to be the director, and according to this source, was deeply disappointed, hurt and angered. The source also writes, "Chris felt like his heart had been ripped out, and he didn't expect if from someone (Lasseter) who always talks about a director-driven studio model. This was totally Chris' project from the start, he was pouring himself into it, and now he's fired."

Why was he relieved? Well, being kicked off from American Dog was the last straw for Sanders after a long time within the company thinking that the heads of Disney stifled creativity. Sanders would then leave Disney and join Dreamworks, where he would most notably work on How to Train Your Dragon and The Croods. He would then join Fox to work on a film adaptation of The Call of the Wild. During Sanders' free time, he kickstarted the webcomic Kiskaloo, a sort of Lilo & Stitch meets Calvin and Hobbes. Apparently the folks at Disney at least let Sanders keep the rights to the eyepatch wearing cat and the rabbit.

“After ‘American Dog’ changed directions I had breakfast with John Lasseter and we talked about that character and whether or not I could have that character back,” Sanders explained to us. “They actually officially released that character back to me, which had never been done before. We actually filed paperwork on it. It’s hard for me to reconcile that this character would wind up in a drawer somewhere and never be seen again. To me, it’s a living breathing thing. He said, ‘I totally get that,’ and so we figured it out…

So the characters were lifted into becoming the main characters of the webcomic Kiskaloo, with the cat, now renamed into Ogo, having a backstory that still fits the world of American Dog.

Former Hollywood actor. Used to play the pet of an attractive middle-class family. Lost his eye at a craft-services table mishap. After that, he played the companion to an action-movie villain, and found that it suited him better. Once that franchise ran its course he was put up for adoption, but ran away. He began showing up on sets again. By using the pause function on a DVD player, you can find him lurking in the background of big-budget movies. He can be seen eating a cheese sandwich during the climactic volcanic explosion sequence of “The Last Days of Pompeii.” During a love scene in “Terror on Moonbase 12” he can be glimpsed outside a window, cleaning himself in a crater. And he shows up no fewer than seven times in the background of “Natural Corruption” – snoozing on a drawer in the morgue, toasting marshmallows on the beach during a murder, opening the lid of a mayonnaise jar with a letter opener in a police station, sleeping in the serial killer’s freezer, and fishing in a lobster tank during a grocery store shoot-out. After the studio bought a security dog to keep him away, he moved North...

The beginning of Kiskaloo also has some not so subtle references to a terrible 2007, perhaps a reference to Sanders' heartbreak of being let go from his passion project.

Meanwhile, Bolt has been largely forgotten by most. However, its legacy of kick-starting the revival era of Disney, the Iger era, and its shaky past still lives on within some fan circles.

Would it have been good?

Part of why I brought this to tumblr was due to the recent discovery of the Gibby pilot. In many odd ways, there's a lot of similarities to Gibby and American Dog. Both have been built up in fans heads, at least the fans who were aware of their existence, that they would have been the better product than what was released. But once you go deep into finding out more about "what could have been", the more you realize how bad the alternative could have been. While I believe American Dog would have been the better movie over Bolt artistically, it wouldn't have been the better movie story wise, where it really matters. Part of me wants to be wrong, and that Chris Sanders could have made the plot work, but part of me also remembers that the Croods exists.

The main problem I have with American Dog's plot, from what is out there, is how much of it seems like Sanders throwing whatever he found cool or funny to the wall without thinking of how much matches together. The concept of a celebrity dog, going cross-country with two commoners and finding the truth about reality is a very strong one. I can even see it working with the more anthropomorphized animals American Dog brings, but once you throw in stuff like visiting area 51, zombie girl scouts, and radioactive animals, the more questionable the story becomes. If the overall message of American Dog was an environmental one, where at first the radiation seems to only have cartoony effects on the world, Such as making animals larger than they should be and rising the dead. Then over time you learn the serious effects it has and Henry must choose to either keep pretending the issues don't exist at Hollywood or stay in the real world and help the effort, then it could have been a great movie, better than Bolt. But if it had the same message as Bolt does, about appreciating the real world, then its dampened due to how supernatural the real world is in this movie's world, making the fake world Henry acted in look more normal and realistic in comparison.

I am still very interested in finding American Dog despite story issues, or else I wouldn't have spent so many hours researching this movie and reuploading this story wherever I could. But I am not expecting a masterpiece.

What now?

The next best thing to do, is look more into the credits of Bolt and see if any of the other animators not listed on the Lost Media Wiki's gallery page have anything related to American Dog saved in their portfolios. I suggest not to contact them, as mass contacting causes more pain than discovery more times than not, but it would be helpful to gain more images at least for now for more insight into the lost movie.

According to an interview with Chris Sanders, he is thinking of making a movie based on his Kiskaloo webcomic, so you may see the one-eyed cat star in a feature film in the future. Just like that cat would have oh-so many years ago.

Still, many wonder "what could have been" with American Dog. The chances of any future revival or release of the movie may seem low, but hey this random internet user can dream.

*The movie he is referring to is the first Twilight movie

1. if you want other people to see something, reblog it. there is no algorithm. likes are nice, but do literally nothing. I mostly just use them so i know "oh i've seen this before i don't want to reblog it again". If you would like somthing on Twitter you would reblog it on Tumblr. I'm personally pretty liberal with mine, you don't have to be

2. don't like someone? block em. Is someone trying to start an argument or bring you into "the discourse"? block em. this is a bit of an exageration, of course generally i take a quick look at their profile, bio, post history, etc. If i don't see anything worth my time they get blocked

3. mutuals are your friends, amazing people, all of them. I want to hug them all.

4. If you are putting negativity towards a character/ship/fandom, don't put it in that character/ship/fandom's tag. That's not why people are on the tag. it is perfectly fine to dislike something. be vocal about it even! but people don't go to the tag of their favorite ship to see people saying how much better their ship is.

5. You are not obligagated to put anything in your bio. pronouns? optional, sexuality? optional, nothing has to be there. I take the route that everyone is aro/ace and non-binary until proven otherwise. Do check their bio before you use any pronouns though, its just good manners.

6. the search feature is god awful, it doesn't even do a keyword search. Avoid it at all costs. I tag stuff with what media it relates to/what it's about if i think I'll want to find it later.

7. Tags are for your semi-private thoughts. if you want to put your thoughts in the world for people to see but not necassarily be dragged along when someone reblogs it from you or make a joke you might not want everyone to see.

8. It's a bit more text focused stuff here than Twitter and Reddit twitter has the character limit and Reddit is... Reddit. Don't be afraid to post a 8 paragraph essay or whatever. At least your mutuals will see it.

9. You might want to have a personal tag for when something is queued or for when you add something to a post. I inverted this rule with my catch-all tag of "#zt adds something" for me it just marks when something is NOT queued as a concidence whenever I don't add to the post (reaction image, character analysis, HCs, etc) that goes in the queue.

10. The queue! the magical place where I shove all my random reblogs so they get spread out over the day. It exists, idk what else to say. Use it, or don't I'm not the boss of you.

twitter is a GREAT app!

before, this account used to just be reposting art and spamming random thoughts like it's twitter, but I've learnt since then that this isn't twitter at all. twitter has some great stuff, I get to talk to friends, find more through mutuals, share and reblog art, and become more immersed in the communities I love! that's great to me, but it resulted in me being stuck with it... and I mean stuck.

twitter is the ONLY app I can use!!

I've tried to leave the app several times, but the thing is all my friends are on it, so I have to use it to talk to and stay updated on my friends. I barely tried a discord server, but starting conversations really aren't easy when there's nothing to talk about. the thing with twitter is that it lets you be updated on what your friends are doing, so you can chime in and talk about whatever, it's a cute ecosystem that messaging apps and stuff like reddit struggle to maintain (reddit posts and replies are messy but I can't pin on why lol, just take my word for it [also who has a private subreddit lol]). BASICALLY twitter is too good to leave.

twitter kinda really sucks...

now you may ask why I'd want to leave the ideal app? well, twitter DOES have its problems and I think many are aware of it. it has a practically unmoderated void of the timeline that you can't help but check out to find new people, but you just get an unrelated mess of people posting 7 word phrases for interactions from randoms and it becomes an addicting cycle to scroll. just checking the app after being logged out awhile resulted in 20-40 minute scrolls, and it's taken away from my morning sometimes.

on top of this, GOD twitter is depressing.

... is an inevitability that you'll see often while just trying to look for your friend's posts, or sometimes they'll even repost it on their page... and it gets depressing. I don't want to see the world falling apart while I'm talking to friends, I get politics is important but my #1 rule is that it isn't shoved down my throat, and twitter is the biggest discriminator without a doubt.

twitter is also a huge unmoderated pit of posts, I've muted all that I can but people still find a way to be sexual, even minors but that's a whole other rabbit hole. there's no real way to mute it all, and it sucks. nobody uses spoilers on images, and twitter's timeline is a mess so you'll get some random's TOP 10 WACKY OPINIONS ON RANDOM WOMEN out of nowhere ┐⁠(⁠´⁠ー⁠｀⁠)⁠┌

the thing is, twitter was made back in like 2008 to post very short phrases on what you're doing, but now it's evolved poorly into a mixed mess of becoming THE social media app

so use Tumblr, PLEASE..!

I didn't realize that 2010s web-blogs were the future, but blogs actually are a perfect solution! I read this article not too long ago, and I loved it. isn't it cool being able to just read some person's cool opinions and thoughts on their little journeys?! from there I got to thinking...

it does!! I can check in on my friends on one page dedicated to them all, I can support cool artists, I can meet new mutuals, find new people with the # pages actually being useful (twitter's one sucks, don't you lie to me), the For You ONLY shows tags I follow, sexual content is banned, people actually use #s in posts which I can mute easily, there's like no politics and I can enjoy my space in PEACE!

so can you help me out and use Tumblr with me?

this is literally the best app for literally any community, but the tragic thing is not enough people use it. I get that new can be scary, and a month ago when I did use it, it was pretty difficult, but once you get the hang of it, you'll learn to love the new side of your communities! you also have your own space, so you can post your slick rhythm game scores or live posts of tv shows, it's great!

so with the whole essay I made, totally consider adding Tumblr to your ecosystem! make an account, get started talking to people, share the love for this app getting new people in here, and have fun!

you're gonna need some basic "get started" tips and get some extensions maybe, tumblr is an old place and has its own style, so I wouldn't skip these (they're short, promise!)

You growled at the sight on your phone... It was Saturday.. Time went quicker than you wanted it to. You couldn't believe you were about to do this, it would be your first date in 5 years. five years ago you were dating a guy called Jake, he was your partner in crime your other half your best friend.. And.. Your lover. Well that was until he was shot dead by those stupid guards.

Whatever it's not like you cared all that much it was five years ago. Anyway you put on a pair of black jeans with a chain belt and a tight black v-neck crop top with noodle strings keeping it up. As well as your trusty trech coat that went down to about calf level.

You started walking to the coffee shop when you felt like you were being watched.? You shrugged it off as I'm probably just paranoid. But as you kept walking the feeling grew. You choose to ignore it until you got to the coffee shop you saw stretch inside on his phone and as soon as you put your hand on the handle.. "GOTCHA! ", Some guy was putting a cloth with stuff on it against your mouth while another held your arms behind your back.

"MNMMPH!!", You tried to scream, kick, push anything you felt yourself get tired weaker when all of a sudden you heard- " HEY! ", the two men scurried off without a moments hesitation. You looked up at who it was to see stretch but he looked different one eye was blazing with an orange light and the other completely normal.

"You alright Y/N? ", stretch asked worried. You looked at him for a second as the light in his eye disappeared. " yeah I'm ok", you said with a slight snarl. He sighed softly with relief "that's good I'm glad" he said with his usual goofy ass smile. But this time you kinda just let out a sigh and a small smirk.

"Was that a smile~" he teased pointing at your face. "Get your finger outta my face before I bite it off" you growled. "Haha! Alright alright, hey let's head inside".

You rolled your eyes as he opened the door for you. Hours had past and it was getting dark. You were both laughing at Reddit memes of this dumb clown called Andrew Tate (yes, yes I went there fight me) on stretches phone. "Hahahaha! What a stupid cunt!", you laughed " haha! Yeah check this one out!!", stretch snickered as he gave you his phone.

But your laughter was interrupted as a spider monster approached "alright you two it's closing time so either go home or get out" she smiled. "Yeah no problem muff" stretch said still giggling a little.

"Hey we could take this back to my place? If you want", stretch asked, you looked at him and let out a sigh "sure why not", you said. With that you teleported to his house.

"Soooo", he started, " if you're gonna get me to watch jaws with you, in your wet dreams shark boy", you said sarcastically. He chuckled "nah, I wanna watch something you want to watch", he said with a smile. " hmmmm" you thought for a moment before you picked one! "how about IT? " he looked at you with a glint in his eye socket.

"Sure thing just don't fall asleep on me", he winked over his shoulder causing you to roll your eyes once again.

It had been a few hours and you must've fell asleep because you were at you house. You were so confused was it all a dream? No it couldn't be it felt so real. You opened your phone to find a new message.

The reason behind this tumblr:

My main goal here is to prove what they've done, the extent of it and show that I've never gone out my way to "stalk or harass" them like they like to make out alot of the time, the evidence I'm posting here, with written context will help others realise that. I think I got fed up of just basically asking them to leave me alone and using that as their evidence of "stalking and harassing" so instead, just post the evidence or whatever evidence I've had since it's started. I'd like to point out I've never sent any links to either of them, I've posted them on my Reddit & Facebook that they've stalked, but never directly sent a link. When these people have followed my friends, made fake accounts of me, fake accounts of people who don't exist, essentially made a new identity for themselves for the purpose of stalking me and my friends, even him trying to get this stuff taken down because he knows it proves everything he's done and that him playing the victim being like "oh I'm a man and no one believes me" when all my evidence, will clearly see there was no truth coming out either of their mouths to label them as victims in all of this. I will continue to post evidence until I fully know they've left me and my family alone, if they want to report all this evidence to the police, please do so because that will help my case (you know showing them evidence that I've not sent you but you've stalked my account to view) it will show them everything, dates, times, clear screenshots and context, I have people who have been followed by them who will vouch for me. I will happily hand my phone over to show I dont spend my days checking their social media accounts, simply because I don't care about them, I never cared, they are blocked, staying blocking, but they made this into a bigger thing than it needed to be. They couldn't just move on, oh no, but thanks to them supplying me with evidence I can now post it here, with context, so it shows who did and said what. I spent years messaging them a handful of times telling them to leave me alone, I blocked not only them, their family on social media to just stop this I got rid of social media platforms to stop it. I will keep posting, I have loads more evidence.

Played This Week 2024.01.01-01.06

Got to play a couple of games this week, only one on PC while another couple on mobile.

ASTRONEER - System Era Softworks (2016/12)

~ 1 Hour (~48 hours for the main story + extras)

This is an old favorite of mine, a game about exploration and mining that is much gentler than some of the other games in the genre that share similar mechanics. It was funky getting back into the mechanics of the game but it was still enjoyable and very engaging. Especially seeing all of the new stuff that they have added to the game since I last played seriously. While I do kind of miss it I have never completed the main story so I want to do that since unlike Space Engineer, Satisfactory, or Stationeers there is a little bit more of one that isn't hidden behind layers of base optimization.

Mobile

Sword Ling RPG - 854Game (???)

~idk? About an hour a day? so 6-8 hours mostly in the background

I have been slowly grinding through the stuff but holy shit is it overwhelming. Each little menu has like 2 or 3 things that can end up contributing to the player's Combat Power (CP). And that's before finding whole other heros who can each be equipped to add CP. Looks like this one really is gonna be a long haul.

TrainStation 2 - Pixel Federation Games (2019 CW)

~idk? probably about 6 hours total now?

It's hard to keep track of these fuckers. This is a cute little game that caught my attention because I like trains. Well, transit. Transportation. Whatever. I have spent a decent amount of time in Transtportation Fever 2 and this game brings a little nostalgia back from that style of gameplay, moving resources around. I may go deeper into my thoughts on it but it is a very comforting game that does interesting things with pacing transit times, especially in this the tutorial levels.

Monster Hunter Now - Niantic Inc. (2023/09)

~2 hours a day so ~12 hours this week?

I should really get a program logger installed to see how long I am playing these.

This particular game is made by Niantic of Pokemon Go fame. While I had been on Pokemon Go this caught my eye and has hooked me longer. Concept is the same only the player actually fights monsters from the Monster Hunter universe using weapons of various styles. I can definitely see where the learned a lot from the game-play weaknesses of Pokemon Go and really turned it into a game I don't mind walking around for. I do want to go into a deep dive on the differences between the two so I might do that over the next few weeks.

Lost Abroad Language Cafe - Lost Abroad Inc. (2022 CW, EA)

~ 0.5 hours

A little language game that I saw an ad on Reddit for. Despite early access this seems like a very interesting concept for learning basic grammar and politeness. I tried Japanese for a little bit and it was pretty fun. While I would like to put more time into it, it is in Early Access so not everything seems to be implemented yet, but I need to check. I have only played on my phone so I need to try it on my iPad to get the full experience where it seems to be intended. It has a very similar feel to Influent, but because there is a much smaller scale of words that are unlocked rather slowly through forced repetition and a relatively rapid speed of comprehension through that repetition make this a game that I want to keep my eye on. Gameplay takes place in chunks of 1, 2, or 5 minutes which make it a nice snack for any language learners.

So I actually played more than I thought. Which is nice. Unfortunately a lot of the mobile games kind of slide into the 'unconscious' play style where I might as well be doom scrolling for all of the attention I am paying to them. Lost Abroad being the one exception.

Some rambling below: about the stuff going on Reddit, my current video game habits (including some things about Pokemon), The Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermillion (including major spoilers so watch out), and Trails fandom opinion the Gagharv trilogy. All over the place!

Whelp. None of you probably know this but Reddit was my main fandom space for Pokemon/Spyro/other video games that aren't petsites, and well, there's this thing going on over there.

I've been trying to get off of it for a while anyway. Too easy to waste a ton of otherwise-productive time, I keep running into spoilers for games I'm still playing, and also I tend to doomscroll the political subs.

So maybe this will finally get me off of it. Certainly the fact that the admins are giving an ultimatum to the mods of various subs (including r/pokemon, my most frequented one) leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth and makes me not want to engage with the site. The whole attitude the site owner(?) has about it is just disgusting, and if it's true he idolizes Musk, that's all the more reason to have nothing to do with it further.

So what to do with this extra time that I don't want to be productive and just want to type essays at strangers about my interests? I guess here's as good a place as any! It's my blog and I can put whatever I feel like on it. Some of you are probably following for that type of content anyway.

So, to start, I guess I'll explain my current video gaming schedule. Starting the month before Pokemon Scarlet and Violet released, I decided to change up my video gaming habits. I had previously had a schedule where I played different games according to the day of the week. This resulted in me not making a ton of progress on some games and kinda feeling discouraged with how long it was taking.

The month before Scarlet/Violet came out, I went into my customary no-main-series-Pokemon-for-a-month period, and decided that I would instead play Animal Crossing: Wild World and only Animal Crossing: Wild World during that time-frame. And you know what? It was great! It was both relaxing and fairly motivating since I knew I had only a certain amount of time with it before I put it away again.

Scarlet/Violet released, and I extended that idea. I even wrote some blog posts here while I was... avoiding spoilers on Reddit... I had a schedule to get through the game (Gyms only on Wednesdays and Saturdays, one plot event max per day) and once I hit the postgame, I had one month to do whatever I wanted before putting the game down for the moment. That postgame month, again, was amazing. Just some guilt-free gameplay of doing whatever I felt like at the moment. Motivation to get the Pokedex done (I did so) and then try some other things. I didn't get everything I tried to do done, but I did a good variety of things and had a good time.

After that, I went on an alternating two-week, one-month schedule for different games. Two weeks on something chill, like Animal Crossing, followed by one month of an actual game, like Breath of the Wild. Alternating between a set of Pokemon games and non-Pokemon games.

And that's a great schedule for games I'm good with playing a bit, taking a break from, and getting back to. But what about heavily story-based games or ones I haven't beaten before? I'm not playing multiple hours a day, so even a month isn't always enough to finish!

Well, enter my new schedule: play for two weeks, check to see if I'm still having fun or if I accomplished what I intended to accomplish, if I'm not done and I'm still having fun continue, otherwise move on.

When Pokemon HOME became compatible with Scarlet/Violet, I felt strongly about transferring everything I could in, so I took a two-week timeframe to do so. My initial goal was to get everything breedable into Scarlet, I accomplished that, and then I moved on to trying to get extra Legendaries. I speedran Shield to get what I could out of a new playthrough and then ran out of time. That's okay - I'll finish later. Because I accomplished my initial mission and I have other games to play. This excursion was interrupting a different game I was (and am) trying to get through. One that I'll start a new section for below.

Also just to put it somewhere: I'm tracking my games on HowLongToBeat now. Here's my profile. (I don't have the time on Zelda because I'm going to use the Switch menu's time at the end)

My current game is The Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermillion. Yes, you read that right. I'm not being silly with the name of the Zelda game (I already posted about that earlier anyway). I'm playing Tears of the Kingdom as well, but it's not my main game at the moment.

And I just have so many feelings about TLOH: AToV. (If you don't want spoilers for it, stop now because I am not holding back.)

I first played it as a young teen. I got to the end but never actually beat the final boss. But it stuck with me. I don't remember much of the plot other than two very powerful, very spoilery scenes.

It's so weird going through it how much and how little I remember. Like the entire plot is about not-Catholics vs. not-Satanists (and the not-Catholics aren't always good) and I didn't remember that at all. But I did remember bits and pieces, particularly out-of-context bits about certain characters. (spoilers start now) Like there's this black-haired girl I saw and immediately went "missing sister! :O" But she's not actually Avin's missing sister, but another character's. A character I hadn't met at that moment. There's another guy I just met and immediately went "oh, I like him! :)" and I still don't remember why he sticks out so much since he doesn't seem that much more important than other characters I forgot about completely.

And the two things I did come in remembering (really, really spoilers now) involve Mile dying halfway through and turning up again at the end of the game as a dark mage, so everything he does is just. . . I'm paying so much more attention to him and he's like, the perfect healer. He's functionally the healer in that he's the party member who's always with you that has healing spells, but he's also such a healer in the story, too. He cheers up Avin when they were kids, being a friend to a traumatized boy who just got separated from his beloved sister. He gives up his wish to help Avin out. He goes with Avin on the dangerous journey when he has no personal stake other than to see his friend succeed. He acts as a foil for Avin, who has a quick temper, calming down every tense situation, and even lying when it helps diffuse a situation. And then he dies.

I'm not there yet. I just remember the pool of blood and the shock I felt. I think I'm getting there soon, though. Because Avin just reunited with his sister and I don't remember that lasting long. (I didn't even recognize her portrait, unlike the Baron that I feel positively about for unknown reasons.)

It's just so good! And yet...

Before I started the game back up, I was looking at the modern The Legend of Heroes games for Switch. I wondered if it was worth getting one of the more recent games. So I decided to check out the fandom and see if there were any tips for fans of the Gagharv Trilogy (which A Tear of Vermilion is in) getting into the newer games.

Uh. . . no. There aren't. Fans of the current series mostly have not played the Gagharv Trilogy and actually think they're kinda bad. Particularly the PSP versions (which is the only version that got translated to English and the version I have).

And it's funny, since when I see people say why you should play the Trails series (what the new games are considered), they say a lot of the same things that are accurate to the Gagharv games. One of the main gushes I've seen about the series is that random NPCs have lives that develop as the story develops - you'll meet the same characters again and again as you happen to travel the same places they do. And that happens in A Tear of Vermilion. There's this writer guy that you meet and tell your adventures to, and his agent will keep giving you books. There's a greedy merchant you keep running into and Avin keeps getting mad at him. And there's so much variety in character conversation - gain a new party member and talk to everyone in the village and they'll talk to/comment on the new party member. Every time a major event happens, you can go back around town to hear everyone's opinion on it. There's some secret books that characters will give you if you talk to them after certain plot events.

I'm guessing this is a Pokemon Sword/Shield situation where while the Gagharv Trilogy is good, the Trails series is so much better that the Gagharv Trilogy is bad in comparison. That's the only way I can make sense of it.

free jewish resources online

Because so many of these lists require a high buy-in cost, I feel like I should add my own personal resources for learning about Judaism. Because on the one hand, yes, unfortunately a lot of resources cost money, and if you’re actually converting, you need to be working with a rabbi. But if you’re just wanting to educate yourself, or if you want “lighter” reading, I have some recs!

Keep in mind that Judaism varies a LOT in both belief and practice. This is not all-inclusive and opinions on EVERYthing may differ.

Podcasts/audio (I grabbed whatever link seemed best, but use your fav streaming platform):

Bad Jew Weekly is hard to find on some streaming services right now, but it’s SUCH a good casual look at Jewish thought from a more relatable/average point of view.

Jewish History Matters - for historical context, told engagingly!

Jewcurious is a podcast (also uploaded as a series of Youtube videos) specifically for people new to Judaism.

Hashivenu is put out by Reconstructing Judaism and shares practices that encourage resilience.

ReformJudaism’s podcasts include “Wholly Jewish” (interviews about identities and how they intersect with the individual’s Jewishness), “Stories We Tell” (fun short stories, child-appropriate), and “On the Other Hand: Ten Minutes of Torah” insights on the weekly Torah portion.

Judaism Unbound is another informative podcast. A few episodes are transcribed on their website here.

Digital Hammurabi is a Youtube channel put together by historians studying the ancient world. They tend to cover Biblical history as well as the history of cultures of the surrounding peoples.

Books that tend to be available at US libraries

(note - your local library may be willing to buy books at your request. Additionally, some libraries let non-residents sign up for a digital library card for free or for a small fee. These change frequently so you may need to check out the library’s websites individually! You can also specifically search for a book on Overdrive and then “Search for a digital library with this title” to find one near you. I’m only listing stuff here that I didn’t pay a dime for and which are on Overdrive; most have audiobooks available too.)

Jewish Literacy Revised Ed by Joseph Telushkin. A broad view of Judaism basics and history. (Note that IMO, some of the history seems anti-Islam in a way that I don’t usually see in other Jewish histories.)

The Jewish Book of Why by Alfred J. Kolatch. Another one of those basic training manuals.

Choosing a Jewish Life: A Handbook for People Converting to Judaism and for Their Family and Friends by Anita Diamant.

Uncovered: How I Left Hasidic Life and Finally Came Home by Leah Lax: A moving memoir of a gay woman and her experiences with the Hasidic movement of Judaism. (May be triggering for those with negative religious/homophobic experiences.

Becoming Eve: My Journey from Ultra-Orthodox Rabbi to Transgender Woman by Abby Stein: A memoir of a transgender woman who was raised in the Hasidic movement. (May be triggering for those with negative religious/homophobic/transphobic experiences. I dealt with panic attacks from this for weeks but I still recommend it. It’s that good?)

Torah Queeries edited by Gregg Drinkwater, Joshua Lesser and David Shneer. Commentaries on Torah portions from a queer perspective.

Tevye the Dairyman and Motl the Cantor's Son by Sholem Aleichem. This also is more cultural history than religious information but dammit. It’s the source for Fiddler On The Roof and it is charming and you will cry.

Other:

Visiting a local temple is free and informative - check their website to make sure visiting is cool. Many are currently streaming services and even have their recorded services on Youtube. (Mine did not charge a fee for any conversion-related services. Based on what I see online, that’s not the norm... but it’s possible!) As an example, here’s OurJewishCommunity.org’s Youtube channel, which uploads services regularly.

Note - many temples and synagogues filter attendants for safety reasons. If you can’t access your local temple’s streaming services, you may need to reach out to an administrator to ask. They also may be able to direct you to other local activities, like Torah study. In my experience, there is no barrier to entry saying that you can’t participate unless you’re Jewish already - it’s only about being open and engaged and respectful. Even if that’s not the case for your local temple/synagogue, it tends to be true for streaming online events--which also tend to be “pay what you can”! For example, some of Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan’s programs, classes, and holiday services.

Sefaria. Sefaria. Sefaria. Did I say Sefaria? It has holy texts (English and Hebrew!) along with study texts, hosted for free, and it is HUGE. Click on anything and it will link you to commentary and other resources. Users can create “sheets” to arrange quotes by topic. Here’s a helpful list of information by topic!

Stay informed on social media. You will see a lot of perspectives online. Reddit has a subreddit of course if you want a taste of those. Ask-jumblr here on Tumblr also shares great resources and has an FAQ page. Of course, following people who you like who are also Jewish is good and may give you a more well-rounded perspective on Jewish life (but you probably knew that!).

The Jewish Theological Seminary has tons of online resources for the curious. The link is for their Youtube.

MyJewishLearning has how-to articles and other easy-reading info.

RitualWell is great for finding prayers.

I can’t write a list like this without mentioning Chabad. It tends to be the first result for Google inquiries because it is an extensive online resource, but note that it doesn’t necessarily curate perspectives that are LGBTQ+ friendly.

ReformJudaism also has a resources tab which includes an “Answering Jewish Questions” section. They also offer Judaism 101 courses online.

T’ruah is a political rabbinic group fighting for human rights. I’ve linked their news section, but you can also sign up for their newsletter to stay updated!

OKAY. So that should be a few hundred hours’ worth of no-cost resources, audio and visual, and I’m sure there are a jillion more that I don’t know about yet. So go!! Go read and listen!!! And share more info if you’ve got it!

Epilogue of Harrow The Ninth [theories]

Okay, I've just finished HtN and have come up with some ideas I'd like to share.

(I don't want to make any spoilers, so please keep reading if you are interested. I would like to know your opinions! 🥺)

Palamades, Camilla and the ending of HtN:

I think it's pretty clear that, by the end of HtN, Palamedes and Camilla have work out their own way of inhabiting the same body. I wouldn't call that lyctorhood, not without knowing the details, given that Camilla is a cavalier, not a necromancer. But we see Palamedes' eyes in Camilla and, taking into account what we know about it, I think we can be sure about Palamedes' soul being on Camilla's body.

"But, hey, are you sure those are Palamedes' eyes?" Let's look at the descriptions displayed on the books.

This is how Gideon describes Palamedes eyes the first time she sees him:

«Up close, he was gaunt and ordinary looking, except for the eyes. His spectacles were set with lenses of spaceflight-grade thickness, and through these his eyes were a perfectly lambent grey: unflecked, unmurked, even and clear. He had the eyes of a very beautiful person, trapped in resting bitch face» (GtN page 130)

And this is how, our unknown person, describes Camilla's eyes at the very end of the epilogue in HtN:

«...and she loved without reserve the eyes — those great lambent eyes, the iris so skilfully and gently blent it seemed there was no tint or shade in that clear and beautiful grey.» (HtN page 507)

I marked in the same way (bold, italics and red) the points in which the descriptions coincide. Camilla's eyes, in contrast, are described like this by Gideon:

«...Camilla's eyes were much darker than her necromancer's: his were clear stone or water, and hers were the unreflective, fathomless colour of overturned Ninth House sod, neither grey nor brown.» (GtN page 131)

In short, I think there are no doubts that this mysterious person is watching the eyes of Palamedes in Camilla, and therefore, is living within her, whatever this means.

The identity of THAT person

Having this clear, I would like to provide some insights on who this person might be. The hints are quite vague, but I think we can assume we are talking about Gideon's body, as the cohort was unable to locate her, and Mercymorn saw her body:

«...When they show me your corpse I didn't think to check the eyes. Stupid, Mercy» (HtN page 409)

This post may also help to reconstruct what happens immediately after GtN. Knowing this, I'm holding the hypothesis that BoE took Gideon's body along with Camilla, Judith and Coronabeth, and that Mercymorn was, at least, supervising part of this operation -which concurs with the fact that she was collaborating with them.

Another thing that points at Gideon is the next scene:

«She and the person who looked after her had used to go to a different haunt, where the food was cheaper and the sausages more juicy —but there the man who fried the food had once said warningly, "It's hot," only to find that she had already stuffed her mouth full of lacy fried things anyway. The man had said, laughing, "Her lips should be burnt off, eh?" But her lips had not been burnt off. It had barely hurt."» (HtN page 506)

As it has been shown multiple times in GtN, not only does Gideon have some incredible high pain threshold; she also guzzles down very hot tea without thinking and stuffs down easily any other hot meal she's given — she even states she has never taken a hot meal before.

With this evidence, I'm quite confident about this body belonging to Gideon. But...whose soul is it?

I've read on some reddit post (can't find it, sorry) that it might be a mixture of Dulcinea's and Harrow's souls, based upon the fact that «she loved without reserve the eyes», and who, if not Dulcinea, would love Palamedes's eyes, even unconsciously. HOWEVER, it's quite impossible, isn't it? We're told, both by Cytherea and Dulcie herself, that they HAVE NEVER MET in person. They just knew each other by letter, so there is no way Dulcinea would recognise the Warden's eyes.

I think this affection might have develop during the time gap. After all, Camilla is the person who looks after her, and presumably, she has been doing this for, at least, six months.

Could it be Gideon? I'm pretty sure Gideon would still be on Harrow's body for the next book. We know she dies, but she also sees the Body (and Alecto, at least that's my take on it) commanding CPR on her.

What about Harrow? Here is where it starts getting a bit...messy. I'm unsure about the location of Harrow at the end of HtN. I'm guessing she's either in a new bubble in the River or she has reached the place Gideon's soul was occupying while Harrow erased her from her memories (would that mean, she as somehow, returned partially to her body?). I'm not into the idea that she has appeared in Gideon's body and now has amnesia. At least, I'm hoping that this isn't it — please, enough of erasing memories.

My fave hypothesis here is that we have been presented Nona The Ninth, whoever she is, and we would —hopefully— get some answers in the next book.

I… hope this counts? Technically, it’s not IN space. Though Tim would like to be.

“You’re mad, Tim,” they said. “Stop trying to speak to aliens,” they said. “You’re wasting your life.”

Hah.

Tim has a… set-up.

What’s the point, he figures, in sending waves out to space where they might be heard in a hundred years, when you could just try to contact the aliens already on Earth? After all, if intelligent life is out there and capable of interstellar travel, and if humans haven’t noticed them yet, then said life must be hiding itself.

It stands to reason that these aliens must then be communicating among themselves in a form that’s inaccessible to humans. So Tim sat down and build every stupid crazy thing he could think off—unusual wave frequencies, smell transmitters (bad idea), hormone secretors… anything. There are forty devices stashed in his room, and he’s not crazy.

Because one day, space talks back.

“Koriand’r, what’s the name again for the thing—the strip around our waists that helps people not be naked? And why do I need it?”

Tim whirls around. It’s one of his Hail Mary machine—a radio frequency so fucking impractical, no one would ever use it.

Apart from an alien, apparently. Cause that question cannot have come from a human. Right?

“I’m not Kori-whatstheirname,” Tim says, trying to sound chill. “But it’s called a belt. We need it because our clothing is factory-made and not tailored to fit; and also because it’s not acceptable to be naked anywhere but some beaches in Germany.”

A long pause, then the voice replies: “You’re human.”

“Yes. Please don’t hang up. My name’s Tim Drake. Are you an alien?”

“Uh.” There’s another pause. “I… guess? I’m not from Earth.”

“Oh, awesome!” Tim is out of his seat and leaning forward, he’s that excited. “Wait, you speak English?”

“I have a—a device that can mimic your languages.”

Tim nods. “So like what Google Translate wants to be in another five years.”

“…I suppose.” A pause. “Actually… can you tell me—who or what is a ‘google,’ exactly? I figured out it’s one of your gods, but what do they do, exactly?”

“Oh boy, you just opened a whole new avenue of philosophy. I guess it could count as a god? Not in the religious sense, though.”

“I’m not a boy,” he’s immediately corrected. “I’m a Hzewf.”

“Okay. Okay.” Tim bounces back on his heels. “How about this? I explain Google to you—I’ll even throw in social media, if you want, but please don’t ask about Reddit, nothing can explain Reddit—and you tell me about the Hsev.”

“Hzewf. Okay.”

They talk. When the alien has to leave, Tim’s reluctant to agree—but the next day, the line crackles to life again.

“You’re a good source,” the alien says. “We… can keep talking. If you don’t mind.”

The alien’s name is something like j—more guttural sounding than Tim is used to, and with a long pause after—ay—or rather a pause i/j. Tim looks up various phonetic alphabets and dubs him J-a’i.

The Hzewf have a different variety of gender expression, so the two debate pronouns, and J-a’i decides that ‘he’ will do just fine. He’s addressed as that on a daily basis, anyway, and has never minded. He draws the line at being called a man, though.

What he is, though, is a total anthropology nerd. He wants to know everything about humans—that’s why he’s here, after all. Koriand’r, it turns out, is another alien from another planet he just met by accident. Apparently, she’s settled down and found love, so J-a’i tries not to bother her too much. The belt thing was a total emergency question.

And now, he has Tim.

It’s fun. Tim likes having a secret, a good one, for once. Every night, they talk. No matter how shitty his day is—and most of them are—at the end of it, he can speak with J-a’i and feel like somewhere out there, someone understands.

And then, one day, there’s a knock on the door. Tim briefly entertains fantasies about the men in black before checking the surveillance camera and seeing an alien instead.

Oh well. Alright then.

He opens the door and ushers the visitor in. “J-a’i, I presume?”

The other being looks relieved when he hears his voice. “Tim.”

“The very one.”

Okay. Tim kinda thought J-a’i would be smaller. Tim’s used to short jokes, but having to crane his head back like this feels ridiculous.

“I need to hide,” J-a’i says, looking very serious. Tim would like to return the expression in kind—this is probably a very stressful and dangerous situation for an alien in hiding, and he should give it the proper gravitas—but he’s so happy.

“So you came here?”

“My masking device broke,” J-a’i explains. Ah. That’s why he’s so… uh… colorful. Tim’s really digging the red stripes, though. “I… I had nowhere else to go.”

“Come with me.” Tim leads them to a cupboard, and then opens the secret door leading down. “You never know when you need a bunker.”

“You—“

“Well, do you need to use it or or don’t you?”

“I have finally found a being whose paranoia matches my own,” J-a’i says. He does get into the bunker, though.

“So what now?” Tim asks when they’ve settled down.

J-a’i shrugs. “I’ll probably have to leave.”

“Go to another country?” Tim asks, already mentally mapping out his visa applications.

“Another planet. Home, I think, at least for a while.”

Oh. Right. What do Hzewf visa applications look like? “So we need to get to your ship.”

“Yes.”

“Okay. You left it in Lake Michigan, right? That’s about twelve hours by car. Oh, but,” Tim looks at J-a’i and his very much not human appearance, “should probably only travel in the dark. Luckily, there’s a lot of that in winter. We’ll give your pursuers a few hours, and then I’ll go pack. If the coast is clear, we can leave tomorrow night. What’s the weather like on your planet? Should I bring shorts?”

Instead of an answer, though, he gets a surprised stare. “You’ll come with me?”

“Well, duh.” Tim snorts.

…wait. Uh. Maybe this is too much? J-a’i is self-admittedly desperate to show up here. Just because he didn’t have an alternative, doesn’t mean he wants Tim to invite himself along. None of this stuff is as exciting for him as it is for Tim, and with the bad experience the other creature has recently made with humans—

There’s an expression happening on J-a’i’s face that stops his panic attack in its tracks. Hope. Hope that’s painful because you’re sure that whatever it is you’re being offered will get snatched away from you.

Tim recognizes the emotion for what it is, because he knows it so well.

“Are you sure?” J-a’i asks. “We’d be going to space—“

“J-a’i,” Tim interrupts, “I’ve been waiting to hear these words all my life. Literally. All that’s missing is a kiss and we’d be in the final scene of the Hollywood movie of my dreams.”

“Kissing is that thing you humans do, right? To express affection and/or lust?”

“Yes.” And because Tim’s a fucking sap who has spent too many hours listening to the voice on the other end of a radio: “When we love each other, too.”

J’a-i considers that. “Well. I… wouldn’t be opposed, either. Though I don’t understand how it relates to space travel.”

Tim nudges his shoulder and grins. “Hey, we can work up to that. Tell me some more about your spaceship?”

Ok so here are my famous!newsies headcanons from an a modern au i thought of if newsies were celebrities/famous yknow bcs I couldn’t get this idea out of my head and idk what to do with it other than making a headcanon list nabsnzbsvsnsbz anyways hope yall validate me after not posting any original content for like…. awhile now hehe

btw it got longer than expected. And I mean r e a l l y long. So if yall wanna read this better sit down and buckle up!

Jack

He’s an artist on youtube

Like a modern day bob ross ig??

If yall know zhc on youtube just imagine that but not so rich (I don’t watch zhc btw but i do know that he does custom art on iphones and stuff and that is definitely not jack kelly)

Anyways Jack simply goes by Jack Kelly.

So jack does art challenges. Like does the weirdest requests from his fans left in his comment section and stuff

Or maybe challenging himself to make art from a specific theme or a specific media

Sometimes he vlogs too but his art videos are what his fans like the most

His merch is amazing because he designed the pattern/drawing/whatever yknow. It’s printed/sewed/whatever on the clothing and it’s good quality. It’s pretty lowkey for a youtuber’s merch bcs jack doesn’t like those merch that just smacks his logo on a hoodie

He’s a fantasy, YA, romance writer (he mixes it wisely ok?)

Listen he’s a hopeless romantic and i’m pretty sure yall agree too

He wanted to stick to YA romance. The classic high school lovers yknow

But he wanted to challenge himself since he’s been writing about high school lovers since he was in high school

Thus the fantasy genre came in mind

So yeah he likes creating love in his own universe

Whether it’d be different worlds, universe, species, time periods, whatever.

He wanted to direct the movies based on his books, but he’s actually lowkey terrible at leading on his own. But he did stick to being the script writer and co-director (look idk how it works in the film industry i’m just making shit up)

Crutchie

He’s a solo jazz singer

Crutchie gives off Michael Buble and Jason Mraz vibes tho

And maybe a bit of frank sinatra? Yknow ‘cause he sings jazz

He usually plays the acoustic guitar or piano on stage

Ok but he’s like really good with the piano

Makes the best jokes on stage too. Some are just sarcastic comments.

Okok but she goes by Kathrine Plumber on her books :D

She chooses that genre bcs she’s a huge fan of Agatha Christie

Her favorite book from Agatha is Murder on the Orient Express

Oh and her books are sometime very gruesome alkjsfhakjsfb

Nobody check her browsing history, she’ll look like a murderer

Ok but I feel like she also has a youtube channel about books and stuff and sometimes like to vlog

She also has a writing tips series on her channel where she shares tips on some of the frequently asked questions about writing or her fans leave a specific question in the comment section and thought she could expand more to it in a full length video

Also she likes to vlog while she’s in a book convention

Her books are also turned into movies and she has done a great job directing it

Race

Yall would be lying to me if you don’t think this kid would end up being a twitch streamer and youtuber (like vlogging yknow. I feel like his gaming stuff would strictly be on twitch)

And ik it’s widely agreed by everyone in the fandom that he’s a dancer of some sort so yeah he’s also simultaneously a dancer

I don’t think I need to explain any further bcs it’s just so in character

It happens way more often than he’d like to admit let’s be real. His fans make a compilation of it and memes on reddit

Always wear a snapback

Snapbacks are an important element to him so his merch store is really boosting his snapbacks

And just for the wormsie discord server he has one with the word ranga on it after it being born from a stupid inside joke he, race, and both of their fanbases combined share (@ my wormsie fam thank me later)

Oh yeah, his youtube besties are Race and Smalls just so we’re clear here :) (I’ll get to Smalls in a bit)

So I always headcanon Albert having two big dobermans. So his fans always want to see a doggy update because Zara and Zoey are everything to them.

Doggo vlogs are fun. It’s usually Albert taking the two good girls to Central Park for playtime or teaching them new tricks

Spot

He’s a solo rock singer

Is an amazing singer like wow none of the newsies expected him to have that sort of pipes to reach high notes

And he does it amazingly with no sweat

Also his instrument is the electric guitar to go with his amazing singing ajsfhasjfhajhf

Anyways he goes by Spot Conlon still

And his songs are very lyrical. Like very.

A lot of metaphors. No one knows what most of his songs means.

So basically Taylor Swift songs if it switched genres to rock. And not even like songs from speak now or red. But like if evermore and folklore songs were to turn into rock songs with a little bit of reputation vibes sprinkled on top. And his concerts has the reputation era vibes but make it spot conlon (hey non swiftie fans reading this i’m so sorry i’m pretty sure yall don’t understand wtf i’m talking abt)

That is also the only way i know to describe his vibe i’m sorry but i don’t really listen to a lot of rock alkjhfasjk

Anyways it’s a known fact that he wears tank tops daily that it becomes his signature look. And also an inside joke among his fanbase

Now just picture the merch booth from one of his shows and there’s like endless tank top designs for his fans to pick and choose

He’s also crowned to be the King of Brooklyn bcs of obvious reasons

But the joke is he’s a pretty tough hardcore guy that’s a cat person

Sarah

She’s a badass female solo singer

Mostly does pop but the badass type of pop

Yes, she does go by Sarah Jacobs

Fans were really surprised Davey and Sarah are related

Because one is a hopeless romantic while the other is a total badass

Anyways she gives off Little mix, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, and Selena Gomez vibes

That is literally the only way I can describe it

She’s very lyrical, with a lot of metaphors

When she dances on stage, she d a n c e s

All while holding a mic to sing. And she hits all those high notes like it’s no ones business (a literal queen i tell you)

She and Spot are besties and has been known to have done a few collabs together

Their fans were hesitant about their collabs since their genre is pretty different from the other but they make it work and it slAPS

And among all her boppy songs with full choreography and backup singers, she always have a few songs she sings while only being accompanied by piano or guitar (Either electric or acoustic) which she plays on her own

Finch

He’s an indie pop artist with his trusted acoustic guitar by his side

Just think of music by Wallows and Lewis Capaldi were to be blended in together and Conan Gray for the cherry on top

But it has a little bit of Ed sheeran, Lorde, and Lauv vibes to it too

His concerts are simple but his songs are mostly very boppy so his fans still have fun either way

And it’s usually in small venues but there are times where he had a concert in a huge stadium

He goes by FINCH (yeah all caps btw)

Finches are a very on brand thing for him obviously

Has been known to collab with Crutchie and they actually make a very good team

Somehow was able to combined both genres to produce a few boppy songs

Ok ok but Finch and Crutchie have made a collaborative album (and maybe they went on tour????)

Specs

He’s a history fiction writer

Yes this is inspired by the fact that he’s 100% a history nerd (no one change my mind i love this headcanon aight)

And he explores a lot of different histories from different parts of the world

He actually helps a lot of students understand history even further for school through his novels

Anyways he goes by Specs because I say so

No one knows why that’s his pseudonym and Specs isn’t interested in explaining either. No one other than the newsies need to know it was born from a stupid nickname the newsies gave him :)

His research mostly comes from history books because of his genre which wouldn’t be a problem since he has loads and will voluntarily buy more if needed

Also yeah he makes a great director for the movies taken from his books

Mush

He’s a chef on youtube

Goes by Mush Meyers

So think if Gordon Ramsey and his youtube channel but make it mush

Yeah that’s it really

Ok but Mush is a jolly and friendly person

Other than just food vlogging he does cooking challenges and cooking tips too

Sometimes he does the cooking challenges with a friend (mostly henry but i’ll get to him later on in the list)

But he also vlogs his life

Which isn’t really often but he likes to sometimes

He’s that big of a foodie he has a food blog too

And also a seafood restaurant so that’s cool :D

Henry

Like Mush, he’s a chef on youtube

Goes by Henry on the internet and in general

Ajkfhajfjska I’m thinking about how ppl would address him as Chef Henry kajhfkjlashfjklasfjklsf

He mostly does the same thing like Mush actually

Food vlogging and cooking challenges (they do it together so) sometimes cooking tips

Ok so I have a specific headcanon that Blink majored in psychology but didn’t end up being a psychologist

So instead he becomes a psychologist on youtube

The guy looks like he could cut you but his sense of humor once you get him talking is just *chef’s kiss* amazing

Which is why he also has a podcast because he’s also secretly great at talking

He just thinks mental health is very important, okay?

Romeo

He’s an actor

Mostly on Broadway but has worked with Hollywood before

He’s usually a supporting character but has been known to understudy for main characters

Ok ik these bullet points are getting shorter and shorter but these are mostly bcs some of these stuff are pretty self explanatory since it’s very in character

Like are you telling me a kid named Romeo isn’t gonna be in some way very dramatic and end up turning that personality trait into his career?? Plus he’s very good at that?

Elmer would play characters that is really far off from his own personality that fans couldn’t believe that Elmer played that character

He has done his fair share in main characters and supporting characters on Broadway

In Hollywood he usually does indie and rom-com movies

Buttons

He’s a fashion youtuber and basically an influencer

Let’s be real this boy is a fashion icon

He’s not really a model but more like a fashion influencer and also kind of a fashion designer

His clothing line is very *chefs kiss* amazing

He designed it all and sometimes likes to design for his friends as well

He also does fashion tips on his youtube channel

His instagram game is god tier level (along with Tommy Boy and Sniper I’ll get to them in a bit)

But yeah he also vlogs

And goes by Buttons Davenport

Jojo

He’s an actor

Mostly on Broadway but has done a few movies in Hollywood

He radiates main character energy and he does become the main character most of the time (on hollywood at least)

On Broadway he mostly enjoys being apart of the ensemble because this boy loves dancing

But he does play a few supporting characters

He has released one or two albums too because his singing is top tier

But isn’t interested in doing a lot of live concerts with his albums

Since no one has the time to say Josephino Jorgelino De La Guerra he turned it into Jojo De La Guerra (so much for ‘a special nickname only for friends and family’)

Mike and Ike

They’re a pop boy band and bcs of my lack of creativity it’s called Mike and Ike

At the start of their career :

“My name goes first because I’m older than you!” - Mike

“You’re only older than me by 13 minutes, holy shit!” - Ike

But Ike slowly accepts the fact that it’ll be like this yknow

Anyways they’re pretty great singers

They have one direction and new hope club vibes

Tho unlike one direction they can dance (i love the boys alright but i really think it’s funny that they can’t dancelkhjjlh)

They like to switch from the guitar (electric and/or acoustic) to the piano

The amount of times their name is confused by the candy is too many

But they like it like that lol

Anyways i’ve mentioned a headcanon where Mike has tattoos (not like from head to toe but it’s fairly noticeable to everyone) and Ike has piercings

So the only way their fans tell them apart is by that

But there are times where Mike has his tattoos covered or Ike took his piercings off in public alone. A fan mistakens them for the other twin but they still respond to the other name because they don’t feel like there’s a need to correct them since they’re mostly known by Mike and Ike anyways. When the fan posts it on instagram and tags the twin they thought it was the twin that was tagged would comment “wrong twin but nice pic you two”

Happens wayyyyy too many times. Their fans are officially scared to approach one of the two in public alone without their differentiating indicators on which is which

And yes it is widely known that they argue a lot when it comes to writing songs

Nothing out of the ordinary sibling squabble yknow but it’s a lot

But they do end up finding a solution to the topic of their argument and make a good team at the end of the day

Hotshot

He’s an actor

On Broadway, he’s one of those actor’s that is mostly good in just the acting and singing

He can’t dance to save his life sjdfghaf

No not really. He can dance a little bit

So he’s mostly the main character

She’s a model, beauty and fashion youtuber (I’m pretty sure those are two different things tho idk i don’t watch youtube religiously anymore), and just an influencer in general
