Winding Worlds
Winding Worlds is a narrative puzzle game made by ko_op serving up what they do best, which is making games that are digital sensory toys in disguise. Their first game, GNOG, was much more obvious, being a pack of themed puzzle toys, while Winding Worlds is a game about dragging vertically and horizontally to manipulate rotating mini-worlds and the things found inside, all to the audio of some really satisfying sound design. The mechanics are very simple and perfect for phone or tablet (though I played on laptop), and the game is structured semi-episodically, with each level tasking protagonist Willow in exploring an odd fantastical little universe, finding out what’s bothering the denizens, and helping them in their woes. It’s a well-crafted experience that you can just sit yourself into.
Guildlings
Guildings is a pretty chill character and relationship-driven JRPG in a semi-fantastical world where fantasy hero teams a glory day relic of history, and also their operations were all connected through a smartphone app. The lore and world of this game is a lovely kitchen sink of different influences and I had so much fun getting to explore it with the various characters. The combat is very relaxed, and based around making it to the end of a certain amount of rounds without a total party kill, though there are some side quest challenges. The characters’ actions and abilities are notably dependent on their moods, with some changing the user’s mood, and others requiring a certain mood. This once again puts focus on the social aspects, as the easiest and most natural to change your partymates’ moods (along with the only way to grant them XP for level-up) is in what you choose for your various dialogue options throughout the game. This all made Guildlings one of the nicest RPGs to actually immerse myself in, and actually play the role of my character in a long time.
“Well, Actually” Exclusives
[Pushes up the nose bridge of my glasses] TECHnicalLY, these aren’t exclusive to Apple Arcade, because you can buy them elsewhere, it’s just that the only versions on sale are for Windows. So unless you have access to a Windows OS aside from the Mac device you’re using Apple Arcade with… I’d play these next.
Sayonara Wild Hearts
I already covered Sayonara Wild Hearts in my most recent Rapid-fire Recs installment, but since the game’s relatively high profile and first spot in the list meant that my coverage was a bit light, let me elaborate. The game is akin to an interactive, narrative pop album, taking inspiration from infinite runners and rhythm games as you race along the dreamy, urban fantasyland of the heart. Each level is a short burst of pulse-drumming visuals and pace that draws you straight into the action, and the game goes like a firework: a magnificent burst of sound and light. Fitting, too, then, that it’s barely more than an hour played back-to-back without any slip-ups – though if you’re keen to master songs as is common to rhythm games, that combined with various secrets and achievements are good for replay value.
Assemble With Care
Whereas ustwo’s previous games Monument Valley I & II had a fantastical, almost alien geometry aesthetic and the puzzly, tactile joy of manipulated larger-than-life pieces of art and architecture, Assemble With Care goes closer to home, with a warm digital painting aesthetic for the story of a traveling analog repairwoman and the stories of the people who hire her. The game itself is dedicated the act of manually taking apart these storied possessions, repairing and replacing their broken components, and then reassembling them. There’s care taken not automate actions that would otherwise be automated – you have to scroll to screw or unscrew things, tug the end of a cord away from its fastener to wrench it free, and squeeze glue onto components yourself. The experience is only heightened by details such as careful pains to make the 3D models match the painterly aesthetic, with each object actually having two slightly different models that the game alternates between, creating a static-like snap found in two frame painted animations.
Alba: a Wildlife Adventure
I recently covered this game in a full issue, so I’ll keep things short. Alba is a well-tuned photography game taking place on an idyllic island threatened by a hotel development replacing its run-down nature reserve. Existing on the island, and cataloguing its animal inhabitants, along with doing simple tasks that come about in trying to combat ecological damage and repair the reserve is a welcoming and relaxing experience.
The Rest
With those out of the way, here are the rest of the games, which while lesser in priority, are no lesser in quality.
Tangle Tower
I played Tangle Tower in a single sitting, only stopping to take breaks for food or the bathroom. Luckily for me, it’s only 6 hours. An installment in the Detective Grimoire point-and-click adventure game series, though perfectly accommodating to a newcomer like me, it follows Grimoire and his assistant Sally as they puzzle out the murder of a minor member of the sprawling multigenerational Pointer-Fellow family, Flora. You explore the wondrously fantastical world the family lives in, all the while picking up clues and interviewing the various family members, and suss out secrets by pointing out details in the objects you’ve found and making logical connections through a roulette of sentence fragments to truly get to the truth like Sherlock Holmes, instead of the game feeding you answers like you’re Watson. Also, the character design and animation is all so lively and communicative, and the banter between Grimoire, Sally, and the others is fantastic.
NUTS
Like Alba, NUTS was covered recently in a full issue, so a quick rehash of my praises: the game is about tracking the trails of squirrels in Melmoth forest as a part of a study to blockade an amusement park project, using a handful of cameras that feed back to a TV in the caravan you’re stationed at. The experience is mechanically grabbing, the narrative blends themes with the gameplay into an affecting ending, all while backed by a solitary, contemplative environment in dreamy, fog-draped tritone. Squirrel recon has never been this fun.
Mutazione
Mutazione, the best I can describe, is a narrative pilgrimage into the meaning of chosen family, community, and love, through the shoes of Kai, who goes to the eponymously named location to assist her dying grandfather. The game itself is mostly kinetic, with the mechanics mostly centered around peaceful gardening and dialogue options that flesh out character and relationships, both thrusting the player into the world of Mutazione and the various people who live there. And what a world it is: the construction paper cut-out aesthetic is absolutely gorgeous, and bigods I wish it were real – beauty and danger alike.
Post-Publication Addition: Though the author forgot to mention the Animal Crossing-esque camping and befriending sim Cozy Grove, he wholeheartily recommends it. It is available on Apple Arcade, and on Windows via Steam.

im sorry but yall know parents like... ‘uu just handing them a tablet and ignoring them is gonna damage them’ my guys, you can give kids Plenty of attention and 1-on-1 time, but theyre autonomous human beings, after a certain point they actually Need to learn to entertain themselves and this happens sooner in life than you think. most infants learn how to self soothe a little by 6 months. sometimes ur kid might Prefer to watch smth than talk to you or w/e, and its honestly not a sign ur neglecting them. its a sign ur raising them with enough care that theyre starting to want to navigate on their own. independent play is Good. its Good for them to learn their own interests and what makes them happy. sometimes kids dont WANT your attention, or cant have it at the moment. or sometimes ur kid doesnt WANT to be at walmart, and they have the right to feel upset theyre somewhere against their will, but ofc u kinda have to buy them food so they live and shit. so distracting them with smth both educational and fun, long enough to get in, do what you need to do, and get out is... is not just ‘okay’, but a perfectly healthy and responsible thing to do in that situation, instead of letting them scream and be upset just to ‘prove’ you’re the boss while you don’t give them anything to cope with besides yourself, like its a good thing for them to not form any personal soothing skills. most parents are not Forcing a tablet on their kid, they offer it as an enriching solution to unavoidable situations where they cant be directly interacting, just like the purpose of any other toy, except this one has a much more engaging interface. and uh, lbr, you can neglect a kid with any method for this. seriously, nagging them to go play outside for 8 hours every time they annoy you can be just as neglectful for them, and make them feel just as ignored and rejected and under stimulated as it could be to leave them with a tablet for that long. and dont even get me Started on special needs kids who might need devices to cope even from a young age bc i just fuckin......... please fucking listen. im not exaggerating or playing devils advocate for fun here. the assumptions abt this are truly miserable.
tldr;;; there are not demons in the computer screens tryna rot childrens brains, ur ass grew up watching bill nye the science guy in classroom settings, ik its hard as hell to recognize flaws in such widely socially ingrained concepts but can you guys..... please just Try to be more understanding and think abt how u treat parents, and tbh how you view kids. its harmful to be so ignorant abt childrens needs and how their minds work. yall kinda act like when ur a parent it becomes a crime to still be a human person or smth like thats reasonable and not an incredibly cruel set up against them, and you act like kids are a one-size-fits-all love robot where its as simple as putting in the universal codes every day to raise them right. theyre literally just people and its a bit more complex than that

I don’t think so. Back in the Myspace days people knew cause I posted them there, but no one in “real life” follows me on here. I’m surprised I shared those back then cause I don’t want anyone to see them now. Although, I wasn’t as open back then in surveys. I took the more basic ones and didn’t elaborate like I do now.

It depends.

Ooh. I’ve had an online and social media presence for so long... like it was probably something that doesn’t even exist now. I remember some teen sites I was on that I guess were like the social medias of the day. For example, there was this one website I remember called Kiwibox, where you could interact with other people, post stuff, and it shared like trending topics and whatnot that I was a member of in the early 2000s. It was pre-Myspace. I don’t think it even exists now, but if it did I’m sure my account was deleted long ago for being inactive.

I’m on all the common ones. I use them all, but I’m more active on some than others. Some I check regularly but rarely post. For instance, I’m super active on here and I post on Twitter quite a bit. I check Facebook a few times a day and “like” some stuff, but I very rarely post. I check Instagram and Snapchat, but not daily and I rarely post or even interact on there. I spend the least amount of time on those two.
8 - Are there are any popular apps/social media sites that you've never got into or signed up for? How come?
Hmm. Like I said, I have all the main ones I think.

The Myspace days were interesting that’s for sure. I miss the hype of changing up my page and adding stuff, picking my profile song, rearranging my top 8, changing my display name, follow forever trains, comment 4 comments... haha what a ride.

I remember it wasn’t long after my brother was born, so it was sometime in 1999. I remember when my mom brought home our first computer. Those were the days of dial up/AOL. Gah, I do not miss that.
13 - Are you old enough to remember life without any kind of internet access whatsoever? What kind of things did you do to fill the time?
Ha, yeah. It’s crazy to think of the days before the internet, but I did have them. I actually used to play outside *gasp* That’s shocking cause ya’ll know I’m a hermit crab. I used to get so tan back then cause I spent so much time outside. Other things I used to do was play Barbies for hours, play with my cousins, read, color, and watch TV.
14 - Have you ever gotten into an argument with a stranger online before?
Lol yeah.
15 - Overall, would you say social media is a good thing or a bad thing, or does it depend on how you choose to use it?
It definitely has its pros and cons. There’s a dark side to social media and the internet in general, but a lot of good can be done with it as well.
16 - How much time do you think you spend online each day? Is this something that varies depending on the weather?
I spend a decent amount of time online for sure, but it does vary. The weather has absolutely nothing to do with it.
17 - If your internet went off right now and you knew it wouldn't come back on for several hours, what would you go and do instead?
Well, it’s 3:50AM so I’d watch some TV and attempt to go to bed.
18 - Since getting the internet, what's the longest period of time you've gone without access to it? Did you miss it as much as you thought you might?
Probably the times I had surgery. I didn’t have to go completely without because once I was able to I was able to rent laptops that were available for patient use or access a computer while there. That was really nice during the couple times I had to spend a few months in the hospital. Even the shorter stays, like a week or two, I had some access at some point. But yeah, I definitely wasn’t on nearly as much during those times. Not at all the first few days/week. Then when I was back home and had my laptop I still wouldn’t feel up to spending much online. I did miss it, but I spent so much time resting and sleeping during the early stages of recovery so it was fine for awhile. I did start to get stir crazy, though.
19 - What's something you find yourself doing less of because you spend too much time online?
Hm. I can’t think of anything I do less for that particular reason.
20 - What websites do you spend the most time on? Do these fall into any particular category or are they just random?
Tumblr, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.

I miss Xanga a lot. The survey community was poppin back then. I miss the days, not so much the websites themselves, of Myspace, Neopets, playing games on Disney Channel’s and Nickelodeon’s websites, making dolls, and the AOL teen message boards. Good times, good times. Much nostalgia.

Nope. I had online friends back in the day that I talked to all the time and actually texted with. I do all my shopping online now since the pandemic hit, but even for a few years prior I was doing most of my shopping online.

Nah, I’ll just keep on scrolling. If it’s that bad then I’d likely mute or just delete.

Yes and yes. Like, even though I don’t post anything bad or risqué lol I still hide some stuff from my grandparents just because they wouldn’t get it, ya know? I’ve done that before and my Nana called my dad and asked if I was okay cause I posted some relatable self-deprecating meme or something haha. It’s sweet of course that she cares, but yeah I didn’t want her to get worried and concerned over stuff like that.

Are you a current or aspiring student of the information technology department? Are you having trouble with what job to take once you’ve completed your four years of torture college? If that’s two yeses, you’re in luck because in this blog post, I’ll be sharing with you the possible careers I’m considering on taking after I graduate.
But before that, let me share with you how I became a part of the Computer Studies department in the first place!
A Back Story of My Career Dilemmas
Roughly three years ago, upon approaching my senior high school years, I was dead set on taking the path towards becoming a lawyer. Hence, I enrolled under the Humanities and Social Sciences strand. (I no longer remember why I wanted to take up law though.) A few self-evaluations later, I realized I wanted to become a medical professional, specifically a neurosurgeon. I can attribute this to familial expectations, the many Korean dramas I watched, and my desire to improve the country’s healthcare system, to help people, and to be one of the few doctors with nice handwriting. And so, I shifted to the STEM strand up until I graduated.
During my last few months in senior high, I underwent personal dilemmas on what I really wanted. Amidst my extended family’s career expectations for me, my wise mother constantly reminded me the reality of medical professionals’ work. She emphasized the importance of your college program being a product of your own choice rather than everyone else’s expectations. And so, I was no longer sure of what program to take in college. At this point, I was already panicking, especially after seeing how confident my peers were with what career they had in mind. All I knew is that I was completely clueless of what to become and that I am a fairly versatile individual who always tries her best in whatever situation and opportunity she’s thrown in. (I’m known to be a jack-of-all-trades type of person.)
Seeing my struggle, my mom recommended me to consider the I.T. field. As a college professor and her university’s official representative to local and international seminars, she has witnessed and understood the potential and significance of professions under this field. Although hesitant at first—mostly because I haven’t been too exposed to opportunities that allow me to acquire advanced computer-related skills (not including the ones I learned in my basic education’s computer classes)— I gave her suggestion some thought and decided that I shall take up the challenge.
And so, here I am, enrolled as a Computer Science student in the tech savvy Malayan Colleges Mindanao.
My Top Five I.T. Career Choices
Before anything else, allow me to explain briefly about the I.T. field that I plan to be a part of. This is for you to be able to catch up with what I’m trying to say, especially since there are going to be various technical terms from here on. And who knows? Admittedly, I prefer doing the back-end job of a programmer. I don’t really love leading a team in a somewhat creativity-based project. However, the idea of initiating and facilitating the coming-to-life process of a computer program seems incredibly fulfilling. If ever I do become a software developer, I would probably create a computer program that will be of use to hospitals and schools. In fact, my mother encourages me to consider developing an enrollment system someday. No pressure.
[3] DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR
My third option is to become a database administrator.

In several action movies, I always felt excited when seeing characters getting out of a tight, life-and-death situation with their cyber security-related skills. Although now I know that there’s more to this job than hacking—which they only do for testing reasons, otherwise it would be a crime—it still appeals to that part of my self that craves for thrill. In hindsight, the chances of coming across serious cyber security situations (like a government cyber security breach) here in the Philippines is quite low compared to other countries, so I guess my thrill-seeking self won’t be too satisfied if I work locally.
[5] GAME DEVELOPER
My last and fifth career choice is to become a game developer.
According to Top Universities, game developers produce games for personal computers, games consoles, social/online games, arcade games, tablets, mobile phones, and other handheld devices. This role splits into two main parts. First, there’s the creative side of designing a game and dealing with the art, animation, and storyboarding. Second, there’s the programming side, using programming languages such as C++.
I fit into the second part of developing game—the programming part. Although I’d rather invest on computer programs that are of use to the community, helping create a game seems like a fun way to apply coding. In hindsight, games are not just limited to the “fun” aspect because they offer more benefits than entertainment, so I guess I’m still helping the community in a way. I play games myself, especially the MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) game called League of Legends. I understand and have experienced that one can learn, acquire, and hone skills (like strategy planning, enhanced reflexes, analysis) from playing games, especially complex ones. Furthermore, one can create and maintain friendships with games, as well as improve their self-confidence.
