Can't Catch Me Now: Lucy Gray and Katniss Story-Tie Analysis

I have not been on Tumblr much over the past couple of years but with the coming film The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes on its way I knew I'd be dusting this old page off. The Hunger Games series is one of my all-time favorite book series and the films are some of my favorite book-to-film adaptations, so to say I am pumped for this upcoming movie is an understatement. And to top it all, I have been obsessing over Olivia Rodrigo's new song Can't Catch Me Now, which if you've read the prequel, you'll know that it perfectly ties Lucy Gray's story to Katniss' journey. As always I want to warn anyone who might read this that spoilers for the upcoming film and Suzanne Collins' novel lie ahead. Also fair warning, this is super long cause I don't know how to be concise.

In preparation for the prequel film I have re-read TBOSAS and I am currently re-reading the original THG series (I am currently on Catching Fire, if anyone cares to know lol). I am also planning on a movie marathon the week of the prequel release, which I fully intend on subjecting my boyfriend to as he recently admitted he has only ever seen the first (and I simply cannot let him continue living life with no clue on how wonderful Peeta Mellark is). With that said, I have had a few thoughts, which I wanted to share before the release knowing that I will certainly have more thoughts after I have seen the film.

Honestly, I am going to be ridiculously obsessed for the next several weeks. I also know I wrote a couple of analyses on the differences between Snow and Katniss and the early games vs. the later games, which I will re-post so people can read them if they haven't before.

Enough chit-chat though let's get to it.

The parallels between Katniss and Lucy Gray are quite extensive and beautiful despite the characters being in many ways polar opposites. There is the saying that "Lucy Gray Baird is a performer made to hunt while Katniss is a hunter made to perform". This is a great summary of their overall character profile, and while I may at some point do a breakdown of Lucy Gray vs Katniss, I first want to write about how Lucy Gray and Katniss' story are far more connected than some might have realized. Part of the realization for me actually came while listening to Olivia's new song.

The chorus of the song reads as:

But I'm in the trees, I'm in the breeze

My footsteps on the ground

You'll see my face in every place

But you can't catch me now

Through wading grass, the months will pass

You'll feel it all around

I'm here, I'm there, I'm everywhere

But you can't catch me now

No, you can't catch me now

In terms of Katniss, I think it's been obvious for sometime that Snow particularly despises Katniss because she is a strong reminder of Lucy Gray Baird. She is a girl from District 12. She stood out during her Reaping, and swept the Captiol off their feet during her time in his city. She not only sang in the arena, but she sang a young girl "to sleep" with the very song Lucy Gray sang Maude Ivory to sleep. She used the Captiol's berries to save herself and Peeta, just as Lucy Gray used the Captiol's snakes to save herself. She wears a Mockingjay pin, the very bird which Snow undoubtedly relates to Lucy Gray and rebellion (far before it truly became the symbol of rebellion).

Katniss may not be like Lucy Gray in personality, but to Snow, Lucy Gray's spirit must seem very much alive in Katniss, and just as he tried desperately to rid the forests surrounding District 12 of mockingjays, this is one Mockingjay he wants to destroy.

The second verse of the song goes:

Bet you thought I'd never do it

Thought it'd go over my head

I bet you figured I'd pass with the winter

Be something easy to forget

Oh, you think I'm gone 'cause I left

This verse summarizes Snow's mindset at the end of TBOSAS, as we know he thinks he is safe from the threat of Lucy Gray. Her games have been erased, as time passes "there will be a vague memory that a girl sang in the arena" and even that too shall pass. However, where he goes wrong is when he fails to understand the deep connection and love the other Covey share for Lucy Gray. Despite not seeing how the story ends for them, or even having a solid explanation of Lucy Gray's ending, we at least know that Lucy Gray and her songs were not wiped from existance. Whether they believed, as he supposed, that the mayor was responsible for Lucy Gray's disappearance does not erase their connection to her.

Snow may have chosen never to allow love to control him again, but he did not erase the love those children had for Lucy Gray. Her music became all they had left of her so you can bet they continued singing them and sharing them, even if they had to do it on the down low. (I also share the common fan theory that Maude Ivory is the grandmother to Katniss Everdeen, and I'm hoping the film confirms this). Either way, Katniss clearly learned those songs from somewhere, which for Snow would have been a siren's call from the great beyond that Lucy Gray did not pass with the winter and she was not as forgotten as he had hoped.

Then we go into the bridge of the song where Olivia sings:

You, you can't, you can't catch me now

I'm coming like a storm into your town

You can't, you can't catch me now

I'm higher than the hopes that you brought down (repeats)

This is my favorite part of the song. Not only is it moving and emotional but it ties so much of Lucy's story to Katniss'. Both girls were like storms in the Capitol, sweeping the people and the nation into their stories so they could not help but be invested. Both were near impossible to control, despite Snow's best efforts, and both had a spirit of hope greater than Snow's ability to crush the highest of hopes. There's also something deeper, which intended by Olivia or not, makes this song perfect for the series. The lines "I'm coming like a storm into your town" and "I'm higher than the hopes that you brought down" is sung from the point of view of Lucy Gray. Both bring to mind images of the rebellion in THG: Mockingjay. The rebels stormed into the Capitol and their hope was higher than the hopes and lives which Snow had already destroyed in an effort to quell the rebellion.

However, just like Katniss becoming the Mockingjay, or the symbol of the rebellion, Lucy Gray had become her music. She was the anthem of the rebellion. If Katniss inspired hope, Lucy Gray was that hope. The hope of freedom. Dead or not Lucy Gray was finally free and her song reflects that truth and the rebels clung to it. Dead or alive they would be free.

Furthermore, Lucy Gray's song not only led to the freedom of Panem, but it also led to the freedom of Peeta's mind from the lies and brainwashing inflicted on him in the Capitol. Remember, Katniss always associated Peeta with hope until Snow brainwashed him. And if you'll recall, Peeta's first true breakthrough in regaining his memory of Katniss and his love for her was when he heard her rendition of "The Hanging Tree". Lucy Gray not only stormed into the Capitol but she stormed into Peeta's muddled memory, and her music was higher than the hope Snow had brought down. Lucy Gray's song led Peeta and Panem into freedom, and it helped to restore Peeta as the hope and love of Katniss' life.

Lastly, the ending of the song greatly foreshadows Katniss' journey:

There's blood on the side of the mountain

It's turning a new shade of red

Yeah, sometimes the fire you founded

Don't burn the way you'd expect

Yeah, you thought that this was the end

Of course, we all know the end is far from over for Snow. As Lucy Gray told him once, "The Capitol show isn't over until the mockingjay sings". Katniss' story ends with her singing Lucy Gray's lullaby to her children. Katniss was the fire founded by Snow, and despite his best efforts, it didn't burn out or even burn the way he expected it to. The line "the fire you founded" is also perfect to describe Snow and Katniss' dynamic because in many ways Katniss was only a threat because Snow threatened her. It's the same dynamic as Harry and Voldemort's. If Voldemort had left Harry and his family well alone, Harry never would have been the perfect enemy to thwart him. In the same way, if Snow had left Katniss and her friends and family well alone, she may never have come for him the way she did or joined the rebellion.

Interestingly enough, if Prim's name had never been called not only would the rebellion most likely have been avoided, but Lucy Gray's music may very well have been truly forgotten. Assuming Katniss is the only one left who actually remembers the songs, we know from reading the books that Katniss does not like or want to sing simply because they are painful reminders of her father. If Prim had never been threatened and Katniss had never been a contender in the games she would have been subjected to a life of mining and may have let the songs fade from memory as she lived out her miserable slave life in District 12.

But as we know that's not what happens, and instead the memory of Lucy Gray and her music is forced from Snow as Katniss is forced onto this journey proving the memory of Lucy Gray is very much still alive except this time Snow can't catch her now.

update on my project sekai unit swap au:

currently redesigning my hxs designs. i'm only making minor changes but deciding on final designs is a bit difficult since i'm indecisive, so i might end up posting drafts here for you guys to vote on.

also in the process of writing more fleshed out character profiles for them so rewriting the main story will be easier and their behavior is more consistent.

on the side, i'm also designing attires for n25 as l/n, aka A Ringing Bell at 00.00 . as of right now, only mizuki and kanade really have solid drafts? i'm having the hardest time with mafuyu.

i still haven't figured out unit names for mmj as vbs and vbs as mmj, but i do now have a sekai description for l/n as wxs (aka clu/Star).

i also still have no designs for the vocaloids other than hxs miku. i realized that some vocaloids' designs will have to change drastically to fit the unit swap, so i've made drafts of hxs miku's redesign to fit that same drastic change.

i originally planned to get all of this done before summer ends, but between art fight and other things i wanted to do this summer, this probably won't even get finished by the end of the year.

maybe i should've anticipated that essentially designing 50 characters and also write a whole ass fucking 21-chapter story wasn't gonna fit in 2 months lol

hopefully i'll remember to update on this consistently but. don't bet on it

So: it's been long enough and we've gotten enough actual moon lore since that I no longer go full Kill Bill sirens, and I've had several dubious wine cooler freezer pop...things so let's do this.

The basic gist of the most well-known moon theory is that Fjord is from the moon. I do not recall if it specified which moon. I am not, to be honest, entirely sure if the people who put forth this theory were aware that Exandria had two moons. I think they were aware it had multiple moons but I am not positive that at the time of the theory they could name them.

Of course, there is lore. I'm not up on all of it and as mentioned, drinking, and it was like, not quite three years ago when it reached its height and I haven't rewatched the video that caused this to circulate on Tumblr since. If you want to watch the full video, which is very stupid and poorly edited, you can watch it here.

Anyway: the theory was that Fjord, a half-orc, was actually one of the space orcs from the Spelljammer setting, which are "cleverly" called Scro. (This is also the origin story on why I immediately assume that anyone super into Spelljammer has the cognitive capabilities of a grilled cheese sandwich, an assumption that has not yet failed me.) The reason why was that he was "too small" to be a half-orc (he's on the small side but, contrary to what fanartists will have you believe, well within normal bounds of half-orc sizes) and also he was too smart to be an orc. This, when you realize this video was made in August 2020, ie, many discussions about racial essentialism in general and in D&D specifically are being had, really gives you a sense of the brain trust we are working with here.

The basis of the theory beyond that is...incomprehensible. It mostly rests on panels in which Matt is like "yeah Spelljammer sure does exist" or the fact that Travis, when asked point blank if Fjord was from the moon, gave the sort of "what the FUCK" stare one might expect. Apparently the video is about other moon theories as well but I could not tell you what they were because it's mostly just a series of (poorly) edited clips in which the moon is mentioned. There is no thesis. There is no argument. It's the Moon Moon of YouTube videos. I do distinctly remember that Keyleth being a Circle of the Moon druid is mentioned for no particular reason other than the word "Moon" is there. It's essentially a compilation of times the word "moon" exists. It's so fucking stupid. It also, as I recall, and I want to note at this point that I've done a significant amount undergrad-level work in astronomy and cosmology so you can see how painful this is to me, rested heavily on not understanding that the Astral Plane and Outer Space are different locations. But it is almost an hour long, and again, it aired in August 2020 with all that entails, so it unfortunately caught on like Circle of the Moon Wildfire.

Anyway. The point is that some people took "if you can't blind them with brilliance, dazzle them with bullshit" very much to heart and there was a month or so in the CR fandom where everyone was like "lol Fjord is an alien from the moon haha" which very much sucked, but fortunately, and I cannot believe I'm saying this, the shipping discourse of Rumblecusp served as a fucking balm in comparison since at least it was fandom bullshit as usual rather than a no intelligent life on this planet scenario, though it was definitely being unfunnily joked about for quite some time after. I'm sure it has pockets of supporters somewhere but I think anyone watching Campaign 3 can feel confident that it's been soundly debunked.

Anyway I searched my blog and I found this from that era which, if I do say so myself, is pretty funny.

but also i’d like to ask, how did he realize the whole butch thing? was it like just growing more and more into himself and dressing to reflect that, and it’s not really a concious realization until he looks back or someone points it out? was it the result of active gender exploring/questioning or some combo of the former and latter?

i originally made him just as a teehee fun thing bc im butch & i like ruby LOL but the hcs i do have for him are that he slowly realizes he's butch once everything calmed down & talked to yang about it! since he was so young when everything happened & he didn't have time to explore as most ppl were able to, i like to think that he'd look back at him wanting to be like the storybook heroes and realized that the characteristics of being butch fit him and his way of being so he asks yang about it who helps him fully realize that ohhhh that makes sense. i think, like many ppl, he went through gender exploration and once he had the talk with yang everything fell into place & he decided he wanted to present more masculinely! (like princes and heroes from the storybooks..& similar to qrow lol) i like to think he cut his hair shorter & shorter with time and felt the most like himself with the undercut while wby+ qrow helped him with figuring out a style he felt represented himself most. I haven't thought abt him in awhile so I'm sure I'm forgetting some more hcs I had but I hope this was comprehensive HDGD

here's a little addition about his outfit design also!:

the outfit design i created was inspired by ruby's already punk-esque style while still adding small, special details that fit him & his character by using some concept art for it! for the smaller details, I wanted to incorporate ruby's admiration for qrow into the outfit as he's always looked up to him; i also added the sash as a callback to ruby's current outfit (specifically the skirt) but made it a gradient of weiss's colors + the rose design from his V4 legging/tights & making it the team's respective colors. In original concept art there were many crosses in ruby's design so I added those onto the design and gave him a necklace of a piece Penny's sword as well.

It's been while, let's catch up!

The last time I made one of these posts when January 2022 and I had just moved back to Ohio, which is crazy its already been almost 2 years since I've been back in Ohio already.

Let's see...I'm back working at Walmart but I'm in the vision center, working on getting my optician's license. I got my job back at Walmart in February of 2022 but I was stocking grocery, which I really didn't like tbh lol but then the vision center manager asked if I wanted a spot she had open to help direct patient's where to go and help clean, etc. I said yes and I ended up really enjoying it up there and eventually that led to me becoming an apprentice optician and working toward my license. There's a test I have to take to get my license and I've been studying for that...so that's been fun.

I've also started writing again. Not for Sims stories unfortunately but I've been working on two books. I have one that I've been wanting to finish since I was 15 (I'm about to be 30 next month, which is also crazy). And I have one that is a newer idea that I got inspired to write from a couple book series I've read. I'm hoping I'll hold onto this inspiration for awhile and actually finish these stories...but we'll see lol

Since this is a Sims blog I'll update on that too...I haven't played in the past few weeks, mostly because I've been reading or writing in my free time. I do have a current household that I've been enjoying though. With Horse Ranch coming out, I recreated Lucas Benson (different last name this time though), a Sim I loved in Sims 3 and have tried multiple times to recreate in Sims 4 but those recreations never stuck. But I realized what was missing...horses, lol. The original Lucas from Sims 3 was a horse rancher. I like this version of Lucas though. He is married and has a daughter, as well as 2 horses and a dog. I was doing a sort of rags to riches style story with them so that's been keeping me entertained.

I think that's all the major things I wanted to say? At least for now.

I don't post on here anymore but maybe one day I will again. We'll see.

i think i went rly hard in august. august was really a turning point for me this year too i think, so maybe my art reflected that haha, but anyhow. i really love these

everyone and their mom has done a religious jakurai art, but i wanted to do one too... the detail i rly like is the blood on his hands. because i like to headcanon that jakurai has vitiligo on his hands. i like how i incorporated that hc in this without making it too busy lol

as much as possible, i try to do a vanistar anniversary art because noël is my baby boy... i'm so happy with how this year's came out!! ofc there's areas that could use work, but i like the colors and lighting c:

I'VE BEEN MEANING TO DO AN IBERIA AU FOR JAKUDO FOR SO LONG... probably as long as the koibito AU for hifugen, but i just haven't been able to put it into words... i'm glad i could at least do a bit of this year, and i hope one day i can manage the whole concept!! also this idea's been in my head for so long that arb managed to reveal demon designs for both jakurai and doppo, sparing me the effort of designing them myself FSJKJKKJH

this one is also a set, so i wanted to post them together hehe again this is based off a horror rpg concept me and gianna came up together back in high school that will probably never see the light of day lol this probably doesn't surprise anyone who knows us, but these characters are based on us FKJSKJH

wah... i think my artist wrapped really covers what i have to say! quantity-wise, i'm not too happy with how much i made... it can't really be helped considering how busy and tiresome it's been this year, and i really wish i could say i can do more next year, but it's likely i'll be posting less and less in the future TwT but as much as possible, i'd still like to share my work! i think this might be my time to start focusing on original stuff, but i still wanna do fandom related stuff because there's still a lot of ideas and concepts i wanna see realized!! also i just love my fandom blorbos a lot lol, so i'll find ways to do things for them >w<

quality-wise though, i think i'm pretty pleased! last year i got csp, so i was still figuring it out, but now i think i got a better hang of it! and that means my art looks more confident i think haha. of course, there's still a lot of room for improvement, but it's nice that i can look at my stuff and go "yeah i like this!" i'm excited to see where my artistic journey goes from here!!

but yeah, maybe it wasn't a plentiful year for me re: art, but i made some pretty nice stuff despite that! thank you all for the support, and here's to next year!!

Hazel is 14 in HoO and 15 in ToA. Proof:

okay so i originally posted this and the corresponding research paper i wrote on reddit a while ago but i thought i’d post it here too. (also bc i accidentally posted my rough draft on reddit and have made some more recent edits since then).

If you don’t want to read the whole paper, which i added a screenshot of, here is the short version:

Okay so I did a reread of PJO and HoO (I never read TOA sorry) during quarantine and I noticed something about Hazel's age. She is described as being 13 in HoO, and the Riordan Fandom Wiki page still lists Hazel's age as 13 but when you actually think about it, you'd realize this isn't right.

So based on the SoN, we know Hazel dies sometime in the summer of 1942, and we know her birthday is Dec. 17, meaning she was about 13 and a half years-old at death. Also from SoN, we know she come back to life in September, nine months before the events in that book. Using this info, there are two ways to count her age: simply the passage of her birthday or by literally counting how many years and months old she is.

First method: Her birthday is about 3 months after she comes to life, making her 14 for HoO, and her birthday passes again by the time she appears in The Tyrant's Tomb (April), so she is 15 in this book.

Second method: Still 13 and a half when she comes back in September, making her new 'birthday' sometime in March. This passes by SoN, so she is still 14 by then, and it passes again just before her appearance in TOA, still making her 15.

This also makes her age difference with Frank either 1.5 years or 1.75 years, NOT 3 years.

(please don't judge the paper too hard, I'm good at gathering and collecting data but not so much putting my ideas into writing in a unique, thought provoking, and comprehensible way. Also I forgot how to format a research paper bc I haven't written one in so long, which is probably bad since I'm going to college in the fall. lol.)

Update on my situation (help still needed) (a new donation post will be made, don't rb this version)

In my previous post, I mentioned a lot of what is going on in my life, but I'm gonna try to keep it as simple as possible (proceeds to elaborate anyway –)

I was originally trying to save up for a lawyer, but the post did not gain enough traction, and I'm now running into issues with legal aid. Because of this, I'm sadly going to have to cancel the restraining order on my abuser. I would prefer not to go into detail as it involves my child and situations that I don't want to speak about again. That's also why I will be making a different donation post, I don't really want the situation with my abuser to be shared anymore.

I raised $590, spent $200 on my laptop being fixed (now selling it though because 1. I need the money and 2. Different issues arose after it was fixed (very minor) and the place that fixed it is not returning my calls and with my car issues and the winter storm here it's too hard to go anywhere right now), around $150ish went to my car (which actually still needs work done because I could only afford to fix one of the minor issues), $100 went to utilities, and the rest went to necessities for the month, including gas. Thank you to everyone who donated💖

In all honesty, I need a new car bc it's costing me more than what the car is worth just to keep driving it, but that's not gonna happen when I have to keep spending any money I get and I'm not allowed to save up more than $1,999.99😬

Good news though:

- I got approved for utility assistance and now no longer have to pay for that

- my mom now says that she will pay my part of the phone bill every month (however, this is after I let her claim my son on her taxes and then she kept the child tax credit and stimulus checks to herself, so she kinda owes it to me)

- my car is DRIVABLE again, but I don't know for how long

Bad news:

- trying to find a new place to live so that my abuser doesn't know where I am but I'm having a hard time finding ones that suit me in my price range so I might have to stay here. I also am most likely not getting any of my deposit back due to damages done by my son and the cats.

- my 3 cats haven't had their shots yet, I have the money to get them fixed saved back from previous donation posts (only costs around $100 for all 3 of them at this one place in town) but I just haven't gotten around to it bc everything else. As far as full appointments to get their vaccines and microchips, it's gonna cost me a lot more.

- my car still needs at least $500 worth of work on it, including ANOTHER new tire, after popping one of the tires, another one ran over a nail, and the tire didn't deflate, but the nail is still stuck in there and I'm just driving on it like that lol

- I REALIZED HAVING A 2K GOAL WAS STUPID AF WHEN I CANT SAVE BACK 2K BECAUSE ID LOSE MY DISABILITY SO THEREFORE I HAVE TO SPEND THE MONEY BEFORE IT REACHES THAT POINT. AND I FEEL SO STUPID FOR NOT THINKING ABOUT THAT BEFORE. So yeah even though I need it NOPE lol

- bf lost his job a while back and fuck you to that one person who said he should be financially supporting me when he has 2 kids of his own
