i've seen a lot of fic rec lists circulating in the community recently and so i felt like i should also make one to support fellow writers who i think really deserve that extra love and attention.

so this is also an appreciation post because i have quite a few things to say. these are mainly writers that i enjoy reading and think need a lot more love and attention because let's be honest, they have amazing ideas and people are just sleeping on them.

like you want to talk about talent? topaz is the one who breathes talent and ideas that literally no one else is coming up with. like if i had to read only one person for the rest of my life, it would be topaz because her writing is just amazing. her moodboards that she makes for her works, perfect. everything topaz does when it comes to writing is amazing, and i'm so glad that she's my best friend and braincell.

and not only that, but topaz is just nice to be talk to! like she makes you want to repeatedly talk to her and she is so good at helping flesh out my own ideas. i wouldn't have written half the things i did last year if it wasn't for her.

anyways, i'm so grateful and proud to call topaz my braincell because she's so amazing, talented, and nice. it breaks my heart that more people don't talk about HER. like you want to read something different and so well written then you need to read literally ANY work topaz has written.

“Wil, please, I’m not sure about this.” I quickly muttered.

“Oh, come on, (y/n). We’re going to be fine.”

The midnight air sent chills down my spine. The moon shined down on us like it wanted the world to know the dirty crimes we were about to commit. I rubbed my own arms reassuringly, but the feeling of skin-tight gloves against my bare skin just reminded me of our current situation.

We were outside of a stationed train as Wil picked the lock of one of the carts. I glanced around every so often, paranoid for any officers or snitch pedestrians walking by. “I saw them load this cart earlier and heard that one of the crates inside is full of cash. All we gotta do is take it and go.” He smirked. A small hum rumbled in my throat.

“Wil, this isn’t as typical as stealing snacks from the gas station or sneaking out in the middle of the night. This is actually serious.” I whisper-shouted at him. Again, he groaned and rolled his eyes.

“(y/n), honestly, we’ve got the skills to do this. We’re going to make money and you’re finally going to be able to support yourself!” He announced proudly.

“But like this—?! Wilbur—!”

Before I could finish, Wil dropped the lock onto the dirt ground and slid the cart right open. He turned around to face me, a devilish smirk on his face. A smirk that made me weak in the knees. A smirk that he knew I couldn’t say no to. With a defeated sigh, I followed him into the cart, searching for our cash reward.

“It has to be here somewhere��” He thought out loud. I examined the area. There was nothing here other than crates and boxes labeled in sharpie. As I walked while looking around, a rope in the middle of the floor caught my foot.

“Ah, shit—!” I hissed, losing my balance. Wil immediately took notice and rushed to my side. Before I crashed into the ground, he caught me by my waist with one hand, holding me up as my hair brushed the floor.

“Can’t stop falling for me, can you?” He cheekily commented.

“Oh, be quiet!” I exclaimed. Wil helped me up, and immediately I wrapped my arms around him for a quick but passionate kiss. He kept his hand on my hip, pulling me close to his waist. My hands then trailed to his chest, only to lightly push him away. He whined a little as he tilted his head.

“Don’t give me that look!” I lectured. “You wanted to go on this heist.”

“I did…” He said, jokingly sad. I laughed before we continued searching through the piles of crates. Will examined the crates that were on the opposite corner of where I was stood. Most were against the wall and stacked on top of each other. Curiously in one corner there were three crates visible. I lifted the crate that was on the top and luckily enough there was a special crate that was a darker shade than the rest of them. On the top it was labeled: “do not touch!”

“Hey, honey, I think I found it.” I called out. Wil stepped to my side, examining the crate with me.

“Yup, I think that looks like the one.” He said. We worked together to move the other creates out the way, and once we were successful, we placed the special crate in the middle of the cart. I dusted my hands off and looked at him. Wil had his hands on his hips with his eyebrows knitted together. Once he finished his thought, he slid off his jacket and backpack and clasped his hands together.

“Okay, (y/n), here’s the plan,” He said, digging into his backpack. He pulled out a crowbar along with a drama mask that frowned. “First of all, put on your mask because this is when things start to risky.” I immediately obeyed. I placed my backpack onto the floor and pulled out my matching drama mask that smiled. I placed it on my head, making sure it was secure. He nodded before placing on his own mask. “Next, I’m going to open this crate. Once I do, we stuff this money into our bags and don’t look back, got it? We’ll go through the back alleys so that we don’t look suspicious to anyone wandering around the streets.”

I stared at him a bit, my heart beat starting to race. Is this really happening? Are we actually about to rob a train and try to get away with it? There was no turning back now. With a reluctant sigh, I nodded. Wilbur positioned the crowbar between the actual box and the lid. Using all his strength, he pushed down, cracking the wood open and revealing the bundles of cash inside. I stared down at the container in awe, but even then, I could never push that this nagging feeling of guilty and selfishness.

Regardless, I brushed off the feeling for now and began stuffing my bag with as much wads of cash as I could. Wilbur did the same as he crouched down, digging up as much money as he could and stuffing it deep into his bag. The smell of freshly printed money started to fill my nostrils, so much so I felt a little lightheaded. Once I filled my backpack to the brim, I zipped it right up.

As I stood up, not only did the weight of my backpack held me down, but so did this pit in my stomach. Or maybe it was the immense guilt on my shoulders? Nonetheless, I felt like some sort of… Monster—

“This is LMPD! Step out of the train cart now!”

Flashes of red and blue were highlighting our bodies. My heart dropped to the floor as I all I could do was stare down at Wilbur, who was still crouched down gathering money. The beams of blue outlined his hair and body. I looked down at my pants, noticing that only red was all over my body.

Blue

All over his body.

And red

all over mine.

“(y/n), we need to fucking run.” Wilbur said hastily.

“W-What—?” I trembled out.

“LMPD! OUT OF THE TRAIN AND HANDS UP NOW!”

“(y/n), start running now.”

Without thinking, I bolted out of the cart with my legs in total control. Desperately I tried to ignore the blaring lights and screams that were behind me, but the more I did, the more I crumbled in fear. I dodged through the bushes and litters of trash everywhere. My feet slapping against the concrete as it echoed through the alleyways. Soon enough, I spotted Wilbur from above, who was jumping off elevated ledges to catch up with me. He eventually dropped down beside me before continuing to run.

“W-Where are we going?!” I sputtered out. My body ached and I was running out of breath. Ahead of us in this small alleyway was an open view of what seemed to be an open graveyard.

“We’re almost near the hidden exit! Come on, we—!” We exited out of the narrow path only to be welcomed with three police cars and dozens of cops surrounding us. Both of us had paused in our tracks. I stood closely next to Wil as his arm was held out as if to shield me.

“DROP THE CONTRABAND NOW WITH YOUR HANDS UP!” an officer shouted. My heart was thumping out of my chest. I turned to look at Will, but I could just barely read the expression on his face.

Reluctantly, he spoke. “Cover your ears.” He whispered.

“W-What—?!” Tears started to form in my eyes.

“YOU HAVE ONE LAST CHANCE BEFORE WE SHOOT!”

“FOR FUCKS SAKE!” Wilbur threw off his backpack and rushed to cover my ears. I covered my eyes too in a sense of panic. All I could hear was the muffled sound of screaming, but the screaming then turned into gunshots. Gunshots that would pop in your ears if you weren’t getting them covered. I cowered in fear as my knees buckled with each gunshot.

I was in fear, and I was terrified for my life.

But that itch of curiousity was there.

Begging to be satisfied.

My fingers began to part ways with a little light peeking into my vision.

Everyone knows the phrase “curiousity killed the cat,” right?

Well curiousity also killed the cops.

I watched in utter horror as the cops who were once standing before us shot at each other until they saw red.

Red.

Red.

Red.

Gradually, Wil started to uncover my ears. The shooting was over and all of the cops were dead. Wil took a step away from me, giving me space to gain my composure. Each inhale felt like another step from sobbing my brains out, and it was apparent.

“Okay, we have to go now before they send more, come on!” Wil grabbed my hand as he carefully navigated me through the dead bodies and weapons scattered along the grassy patches. I trailed behind, not having the courage nor strength to voice any type of concern. We had finally arrived to an alleyway that was hidden and led directly to Wil’s house just a couple of block from here. From there, Wil let go of my hand, but instead of following him, I stood stiffly with my head down.

“(y/n)..?” Wilbur whispered.

My heart was thumping hard out of my chest as tears quietly streamed down my face. I threw off my backpack in frustration, landing it close to Wil’s feet. Without a word, I began walking away.

“(y/n), hey! We finally did it!” He reached out and held my hand again. “We won, didn’t we? Come on, let’s just go home.” Wil quietly begged. I pulled my hand away, not even hesitating for a bit. Even if he wasn’t wearing gloves right now, I just know that his skin would’ve been cold. Cold and painted in blood.

“Wil, I can’t fucking do this anymore.” I said. “I— I have to draw the line here.”

The world fell silent for a minute. I turned to look at him, but I didn’t see his face. No, instead I was only bet by that drama face frown. It honestly felt like some sick metaphor. Seeing the agony on his face, but it wasn’t even his.

“W-What do you mean?” He stuttered out. He let go of my hand as we both stood facing each other just a few feet away. “Come on, (y/n)! We did it. We have the cash and we got away! What’s the problem?!” He cried.

“This!” I gestured behind me. Though the bodies were out of sight, they were definitely not out of mind. “Fucking killing people, Wilbur?! What is wrong with you?!” I screamed at him. My throat ached from the sob I forced to choke down.

“What’s wrong with me?! (y/n), we could’ve gone to jail. Are you fucking kidding me?! I SAVED YOUR LIFE!” He shouted back. “YOU’RE FUCKING UNGRATEFUL! I helped you get this money so you can finally have some sort of income and I just saved your ass from getting prision for life!”

“WILBUR THAT DOESN’T MEAN KILL PEOPLE! THERE WERE SO MANY OTHER SOLUTIONS.”

The tears were streaming hard now. Thank God I was wearing a mask.

Wilbur, after some careful silence, began talking again. “If you don’t want this, (y/n), you can fucking leave. You can keep living this fantasy that this world is just rainbows and sparkles, but this is the real shit we have to get through in order to get by.” He turned around, picking up my backpack along the way. He walked slowly, as if waiting for some sort of argument from me. Some form of plead that showed that I still loved him.

I couldn’t lie to him.

I just couldn’t.

He stopped in his tracks, turning his head to the side so I was at least in eye’s view. “I fucking loved you.” He mumbled. “And I thought you did too.”

Wil was not only my first boyfriend, but was also my first friend. After roughly a year of him moving into West End, we became neighborhood best friends at the age of 13. When we started to go to school together in high school, we started dating. The night of the incident happened when we were 16, and life hasn’t been the same since.

“Delusion?”

I turned around, noticing that Dream was also on the rooftop with me. I sighed before returning my gaze back onto the abandoned train stationed on the tracks.

“I know, patrol time and all. Just give me a moment.” I said, absent-mindedly. He made a noise of confirmation before vanishing behind me.

My name is Delusion. A highlighted hero of The Hero District with the power to enforce visual and audio imageries, fucking with people’s minds. I’d like to believe I’m loved and appreciated in this city, but I know deep down these people fear me. No matter how much I engage with the citizens or how I volunteer to patrol Eastside, I’ve already created a sense of paranoia for them without using my powers.

HP Rec Fest, Day 23

I can’t say soulmate AUs are among the things I read the most but every now and then I feel a soft yearning for that trope and I’m always open to new angsty interesting takes on it. I know this is a great comfort trope for many readers so I really wanted to do is justice at @hprecfest. I’m reccing two of my favourite authors, and I just realized that’s two Snarry recs in a row (you’d think I read this ship every other day which is def not the case as I’m very picky - I can picture Writ laughing at this 😂). Incidentally, both fics are 9k which means everyone will have two nice short treats to check before the Christmas Eve chaos. Oh, I’ve also recced a Rarry soulmate fic here, highly recommend it as well. Enjoy!

The truth is, not many things are known about the magic that is behind soulmarks. They'll turn up when they want and not before. The truth is, you don't get a choice in your soulmark. The truth is, not everyone is okay with that.

what I really adore about this fic is that… they’re already there, right from the start. they fall for each other before Harry’s mark shows up (and of course it’s their first words to each other 🥺) and the lowkey angst comes from their sudden appearance and Draco’s not-so-receptive initial reaction to them. I say lowkey angst because the fic opens with such a gorgeous, intimate and tender lovemaking scene it’s impossible to believe they’re not already head over heels for each other - but learning that there’s someone “destined” for you out there brings implications and complications that Draco’s not yet ready to face. I love this take on the trope because that immediate panic and resistance to the whole soulmate concept is so relatable and raises a great question about predetermined x freely chosen love which I think it’s a fascinating and very mature discussion involving this trope.

A Universe of Searching Souls by @writcraft (Harry/Snape, E, 9k)

When the small, innocuous mark on Harry’s hip begins to cause him discomfort, he decides to go and visit the person who has a similar mark of their own. He’s fairly certain there must be some mistake, because the universe wouldn’t be daft enough to give Harry and Severus matching soul bond marks. Would it?

god help me, I’m so weak for Writ’s Snarry. this 9k fic actually feels longer thanks to the brilliant format and Harry’s compelling pov. I love the narrative style that highlights the passage of time through short (then not so short) vignettes covering Harry’s teenage and early adult years. he’s so lovely, earnest and tentative, a sharp contrast to this Snape who’s as insufferable and difficult - and therefore, perfect - as ever. I just reread this last night and am still howling at “I refuse to dismantle my wards for your stupid convenience Potter, you might as well stay the night” 😂 if you’ve read Writ’s other works you know their chemistry is deliciously addictive, charming and funny and full of blatant UST; the way Snape gets so easily undone by Harry’s eager honesty always gets me. for such a short story this is a masterclass in anticipation, and when they finally get there it’s hot af but also calm, intimate, familiar. definitely a must read!

Deep Like a Coastal Shelf by @Lilla_Torg [aight so this is an author with the very distinguished storytelling pattern, that i can not help but appreciate, their world-building and characterization is usually top notch, and this particular babie is not an exception: porsche and chay were brought up by someone from the syndicate that targets organized crime, and now that people, who used to call themselves their parents, are gone, Porsche is left with the ominous List, and a black leather vigilante suit, to keep their legacy alive. korn and gun are dead, Main and Minor fams are combined, tankhun has taken over as the Leader. kinn handles their overseas ops. amazing quality of storytelling, as always. DNI if you can’t handle pairings other than kp, as this is a multi-pairing piece, as it is customary for this author. but again, the story is so good, i didn’t even skip kimchay/vegaspete bits, which is a feat on it’s own. max kudosssssss]

the house don’t fall (when the bones are good) by @bytheriveriwept [i often say that i luved some works, but there are works i luved, and then there are works i LUVVEEEEEEDDDDDDDD with my whole-ass heart, this bit of genius masterpiece is the case of the latter. kp are special agents, colleagues, parts of the same organization, cohesive unit, and all that. only until porsche decides to take on risqué assignment, and go undercover. will they still be them, when he is back....? what can i say, this was sooooooooo up my alley in so many ways, i don’t even wanna say no more, if you haven’t read this.... what the hell is you even doing]

oooh good question. the most important fic is at the bottom of this post so just scroll to the final paragraph if you only want one, true recommendation of the only rvb fic that really matters.

QED is fantastic though its more of @shotgunslap's thing than mine. the partner to that is also obviously QoQ, the only rvb fic ive been able to make almost all my friends read. i think about the south/north characterization every day of my life. caboose and carolina mean so much to me, etc etc. thats a pretty easy pick though so im cracking into my ao3 bookmarks to look for more niche picks.

i know there was actually a lot of rvb fic that was just posted to tumblr that i think ive gone back and tried to reblog at some points but i never organized it, i should have archived it, people who wrote good femslash and rvb women liked to just post it under a readmore on their tumblrlog and you have to go digging through decades old tags to find it now

okay. the big one i actually do still think about all the time forever and ever is saltsanford's stuff about epsilon/wash's relationship. this is the big one i still think about that centers on their backstory, but also, put my guns in the ground, which is one of the Big fandom tuckington longfics, also has such good washpilon stuff in it and they're so fucking juicy. when tucker asks wash how many times he's broken his ribs and he says four and epsilon says "actually it was five" before realizing How Bad of a Move that would be. Hello? Hello?????? i want them to be forced to reimplant and have weird mind brain trauma sex SO BAD sorry im normal. this is another one that takes place during/after the chorus era

on the spectrum of fics that i actually dont yet feel ashamed reccomending, primtheamazing, who wrote QoQ, also wrote some other good stuff. i am a HUGE fan of this fusion fic, the punchline to the tucker/caboose fusion is HYSTERICAL. this one where grif forgets who simmons is due to temple shennanigans and flirts with him is also very like. trope-y but i like that shit so this goes here too

ok. now onto the stuff that it is actively embarrassing for me to be recommending. but. prim's logrimmons fic is hysterical and was the stepping stone to creating the lolixgrimmons mind palaces with my friends so its worth it just for that. but also its really fucking funny. so is the one where locus has to listen to them have sex and gets himself caught

the truly embarrassing one for me to have here is the piece of softboy grimmons content i participate in. sadly i do enjoy s15 content sometimes for the softboy grif sensitive emotions exploration i will admit to being a hypocrite there and i really liked that one and reread it frequently (just realized this is written by the QED person so! you might already know of it)

and then finally. the most important red vs blue fanfiction of all time, guns are for shooting. it has it all. sarge. washington. sarge again. kismesisitude. grif and simmons acting like rosencrantz and guildenstern (are dead). locus being invisible and getting caught by lopez with a bag of flour. it's written by the person who wrote QED. You want to read it right now. Read it right now. READ IT RIGHT N

I just popped in to let you know that even though IWTV is not my main fandom, I immensely enjoyed the series and your insights on the whole universe got me hooked badly (but in a good way). However, the book discussions are def a wild ride in which I'm lost most of the time lol!

As someone who only watched the series (..and ofc the 90s film), it really surprises me how some people see the characters and want to force them in some kind of fluffy fanfic narrative. As much as love all of them, they are all quite awful and, to say at least (As they should be, they are Vampires after all). Louis is not an angel, and Armand, however gorgeous he is, imo is already creepy as hell and lestat (my unhinged love) is definitely troublesome in so many ways. They all are so bad for each other but so good for us, can't wait the second season!

Anyway, thanks and keep on the good work! And if you have any good fic recs, faithful to canon (so not fluffy coffee shops pls), I could give it a go.

In regards to those recs - I have only read a few ones as of now. I am also someone who likes to stay in canon (If you want to have a look), I rarely write or read AUs.

So, some of those I have read:

The right regrets, by @dreamofme9 - canon tie-in with smut, but an awesome character dissection, too :)

I can generally recommend @thefairylights fics, though I haven't read them all yet (*hides face in shame*)

I've also read some by Zisurru, and of course Go Fetch God by BlueBloodBruise who I love dearly, but who only writes one fic per fandom *cries* and doesn't really like social media. Also it is slightly AU but still almost a must read.

But I'm really, really, really behind, mostly because I'm writing so much as well 🙈😅 (I am looking forward to my summer vacation tbh, with a cocktail and my phone, lol.)

Maybe other people out there want to add recs for canon-compliant fics here?

Yeah you've hit the nail on the head. But also made me question if I know what I want looool. As things stand, the books I read of whatever genre are overwhelmingly straight and it makes me a little sad. I'm not looking for tropey things and yeah, when I search for lbgt fiction that's not what I want either. I guess i just want to find the books that are about gay relationships in the way that gen books are about straight relationships. I don't even need it to be a b plot! The older I get the more it feels that anything I buy in a highstreet bookshop is set in an au in which lbgt people do not exist. Does that make sense?

I know I can go to lbgt booksellers but I don't know how to avoid books that are centred around being gay. I guess, I feel like the real world has moved past 'gay' being a sticking point and I live my day to day life crossing paths with lbgt people just living their lives and then everything I read that's not fic is just lacking that. I know that is largely because of how new it is for lbgt life to be like this. Published fiction is 99% straight. But I guess I wish there was somewhere I could go to speak to other readers who happen to be lbgt but are readers first and for them to go 'oh I really liked this character, he was just like me or my friend or my partner'. I guess I just want background gays? Or main characters who happen to be gay but that's not the story.

I'm a complete genre whore which is part of the problem lol. I'm not looking for 'gay scifi' or 'gay romance' I just want some of the books I read to represent the world as I see it. I love mystery books, thrillers, adventure stories, I'll read any kind of fantasy (not a great fan of really long series cause I either lose time and read 7 books in a few weeks or I lose interest half way), I'll read historical works. Ones set in mundane real life, ones set in created worlds. I try and avoid stories that are too scary lol as I get really taken in by them, but I do end up reading quite a few of them anyway. I do love a romance tbh but it has to be done well and I've never been able to figure out exactly what I want from them. A lot of men in het romance books are frankly terrifying, and their love interests wouldn't know a red flag if it hit them in the face. I don't like anything that's too forgiving of its characters i guess? I want them to feel real and part of that is them having the humanity to make mistakes but if I feel like the author doesn't Know they've written a Bad Person tm I get weirded out lol. Nothing better than a misguided character that the author has fully intended to be misguided. I don't need them therapised. I do like an acknowledgement from the author that people aren't good or bad and I like the characters I read to show that. I love a sympathetic bad person. And... this is telling you nothing about what I like to read lol.

I guess the main thing is that I'll read anything as long as it grips me. 'Well written' is very subjective isn't it. I want to be caught up in it, I don't want to be thrown out of the story by dialogue I can't follow or an arc which even the author doesn't seem to be sure of. I don't actually mind overly flowery writing, I love learning new words lol. But really long sentences annoy me (very hypocritical I know. My formal writing is about as convoluted as this). I'm pretty forgiving of most things if I like what I'm reading tbh. I'm not a past tense purist and I'll put up with a inconsistent character if I can see they are supposed to be like that.

I read the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo recent-ish ly and I liked the f/f relationship in that. I've enjoyed Sarah waters books which are historical lesbian romance, so I'll def go for 'lbgt fiction' I just need other stuff going on. I need an actual story, not just a coffee shop au plunged in to a original story. Honestly if you go for space opera at all, you should read a matter of oaths, it was fab. I was guessing right till the end, did not expect it at all. The only thing I'd change about it is I'd love more tbh. A sequel would be fab. I love things with twists, so I'll read just about any kind of mystery. Anything where the narrative is untangling a story that already happened is fun. I enjoy gillian flynn, David Mitchell, honestly I'll pretty much read anything. I get a lot of my books second hand or from my libraries ebook service (this is pretty limited) so I read a lot of the award winners a few years late, where everyone bought it and now I can get it cheap. That said I've never had any interest in fifty shades or any popular ya books in the years since I've been a young adult lol. I mainly want to read about people around my age. 30s or so if it's more of a mundane life story. If the story takes you outside of every day life then I care less about ages. I've read some great stories with older protagonists.

Hmmmm I guess I don't know enough about what I'm looking for for ppl to recommend actual books which is fair enough as I'm massively picky and that doesn't work with ppl I know Irl either but like... where are you guys going for book reviews??? I'm gonna check out what ppl have mentioned in the notes of that post but yeah i think i need some go to places for reviews. Maybe that's where I should be starting.

It's definitely a problem. I'm not big on gay lit myself for similar reasons.

As far as I know, mystery has a longer history of including more queerness, though of course, the farther back you go, the more of it is tragedy.

Frankly, nowhere.

All sources of queer book reviews I've found have been completely useless to me. Only lists of what exists have been useful, not lists that try to tell me what's "good".

I'll google "gay werewolf FBI" and then judge for myself what's garbage and what's at least up to the level of bad fic I'd read anyway. I've found plenty I've liked well enough to read. I haven't found so much I'd unequivocally rec, especially if someone is looking for high quality prose.

And horror of horrors, a lot of authors I once liked seem to have reacted to pandemic stress by taking all of the conflict out of their books.

I hope I’m not the only one here on your blog just for the Tokyo revengers content because I never watched Baki should i thought??

I have been very Baki focused as of late, huh? ^^; You are def not the only TokRev fan though, I assure you!  My first really sizable chunk of followers came from my Taiju fic, and though I have been slacking a bit on posting anything TokRev related, I promise you much more is planned/being written currentl. A large chunk of bigger fics I am working on are actually mostly TokRev, I just wanted a lil break and so I focused on smaller stuff for a bit, and pretty much all of that happened to be Baki.

Now, as for if you should watch Baki…

Short answer: Yes!  :D

Thoughtful answer: I think Baki is a very interesting take on the fighting genre, and I do highly recommend it. The saga of the Hanma family is as engrossing as it is entertaining, and there is a colorful cast of characters that support the series that you can’t help but love, hate, or love to hate. I have been kind of waiting for a Baki renaissance for a while now-I feel like other than in Japan, it really isn’t a super popular series and that’s a bit of a shame because it truly is an entertaining watch/read. The Netflix adaptation I think has helped the series a lot (and we are all grateful for it, to see our lovely boys animated so beautifully :)) and put it on the map for newer audiences to enjoy, but I definitely recommend the manga too. It’s a pretty fast read because a large chunk of it is action, but it’s pretty cool to see how Itagaki’s art has changed over the years and also how he has grown and changed as a story teller. Earlier Baki is much different than newer Baki, and some of the characters feel a bit foreign when you go back and reread some of the earlier stuff after being immersed in the newer content.

 Baki also has some very bizarre and downright comical aspects as well that kind of put it on par with JJBA  while making it very charming. The mangaka def adds some quirky flairs to his story telling, which while sometimes I can get a little annoyed/bored/confused with them, I feel like overall they make the experience of watching/reading the series its own unique and fun experience.

And if you love delinquents, Kaoru Hanayama is like… one of the best and coolest delinquents. If you put that man in Toman he would be running the whole gang within days and 90% of the bullshit everyone had to go through in Tokrev probs would have been resolved fairly quickly, if it even happened at all. This man would grind Kisaki to paste in the blink of an eye and I would pay to see it happen. :)

THAT ALL BEING SAID: Not everyone likes Baki, and that’s fine too. I know personally a lot of people are turned off by the art/how the characters look and honestly… That’s valid lol. I remember I once showed my friend a picture of Biscuit and her direct response was “Why does he look like he’s made out of balloons, like a clown constructed him?” LOOOL and often times if my friends mention weird body proportions in comics/manga someone inevitable asks when I am gonna chime in with a Baki manga panel. ^^;  Most of the rest of my friends don’t really have any desire to partake in it though, and a few that have just really weren’t in to it. It’s very heavy on fighting and martial arts, and though the fighting is rather fantastical in a lot of cases, it (usually) doesn’t have supernatural elements or magic involved. So if that seems kind of bleh to you, you may want to avoid it.

Horny answer: Incredibly sexy men who are at least half naked a large majority of the time beating the shit out of each other is very fun, nice, and fulfilling to watch. :)

So I say give it a try if you are interested at all. At the very least, some of the fics on here may make a little more sense.

Hi, I was wondering where would you recommend beginning for someone who wants get into the Alex Rider fandom? It sounds like something I would enjoy and I really want to read your upcoming works based on it, but I am not sure if I should start with the books or tv show?

First of all, I am super excited that you are thinking about joining us! And hella flattered that my upcoming writing is at least part of the reason.

That's a good question, and after sleeping on it my answer is going to be the really helpful "it depends." And I think it does. Because while I love them both, the vibes are different, for lack of a better way to put it.

For the books, they're very much action-adventure based middle-grade fiction. And the first few def reflect that? I'm in the middle of a reread myself, and I will say that the emphasis is very much on the action and the peril and Horowitz writes that very well in the first few. The emotional exploration comes later. Think Bond but written for ten year olds (while making fun of the genre a tiny bit at least at first).

The TV show has Alex a little older (16ish instead of 14) and it clearly intended for an older audience. Someone involved in the show (either the director or one of the writers, I don't remember which) said it was "more bourne than bond" which I agree with. Very like, atmospheric and an emphasis on the "real world" consequences of it all. More character driven, rather than action driven is probably the best way to put it.

From a "I want to understand what the fuck you're talking about" perspective, most of my fics are going to be TV-Verse based, at least at first since I don't want to write book verse until I finish that reread. And I'm also kind of petrified that they're going to cancel the show even though I adore it so much so more viewers would be good.

hi hi, have a rec possibly for WIP saturday or our turn sunday! i re-read coffee & pies after you rec'd it last week and realized that one part of it (the daryl/merle subplot) kind of reminds me of rough & tumble by iliveatlast on ao3/9 lives. it's an au where daryl meets carol when she's working the night shift at an urgent care after merle breaks his arm, and from there we see them slowly building a relationship (btw the two of them and also sophia!!) and grappling with the legacies/cycles of abuse. i feel like i've read a ton of non-zombie aus where carol is still with ed and daryl saves her from the abusive relationship, but i've never actually seen it handled the opposite way before - even in stories like coffee & pies, merle is very much the b or c plot, and i love seeing carol be the one who has clawed her way out already and is pulling daryl with her - she's not a damsel in distress, canon has made that clear. it's updated decently regularly and currently at almost 100k so even though it's not complete i think it's def worth a read!! i also have to say, i'm a sucker for sophia - more time for our girl, gone too soon!! - and the relationship btw her and daryl in this fic is so beautifully drawn and delicate. and her and carol - breaks my heart, so loving and caring and makes the loss of her in the show hurt 10x as much. the author has a couple other aus that are ZA aus where sophia lives and i love that version of her sophia too - slingshot wielding badass in training! so just some recs for you if you want/need them. thanks for doing these lists, i'm really enjoying being reintroduced to fics i haven't read in a while and digging into some fics that are brand new to me!!!

S’okay,” Daryl says awkwardly when it becomes clear she’s waiting for some kind of response. “Ain’t like - don’t really think nobody’ll wanna sign it anyway. So." Instead of getting the kid to let up, this statement seems to somehow capture her interest. She uncurls in the chair a little, looking at him with a wide-open face. “Why not?" But he’s saved from having to answer that by Carol the desk lady, who breaks into a little half-run when she sees Daryl waiting. “Sorry, sorry - just had to step away for a moment, sorry about that, Daryl.” “S’fine,” Daryl mumbles. She doesn’t have to apologize to him for taking a piss or whatever, good Lord.

Rating: T / Teen and Up Audiences Word count: 92107 (18 chapters of ?) Published: December 02, 2022 - WIP Rough and Tumble is a story reflects on how complex abuse is by shining light on Daryl and Merle's very difficult and violent relationship with great detail. If Daryl's your favorite TWD character, you'll love how iliveatlast writes him - it's just really well done. Despite dealing with heavy themes, this is fic is also very endearing and sweet (Daryl and Sophia's bonding make me smile every single chapter). 🌝 Who is one character you haven’t yet written for that you would like to?

I haven't written much (possibly any) Raf! Today I sat in an IKEA eating lunch (I know, I'm so cool, fucking love meatballs) and reading With so much of my heart (that none is left to protest) by @kiwiana-writes and I was really enjoying the mentor dynamics in it, so there you go. Raf.

💭 What is a headcanon you have about your own work?

I have this headcanon about Deep Blue that they don't have kids in the future, and I really don't fucking know why. In Down by the Water I really loved their kids and their family life, it all means so much to me, and yet for this one I just can't see kids in their future. Funny how the same characters can still come out together but in a completely different way, though I guess that's the point of telling all these different versions of their stories. 🤷‍♀️

🍰 Name one of your fave comfort fics (doesn’t have to be your all time fave).

I have a folder on my phone with 50 fics in it that I love beyond all, but one of the ones I return to the most is Cache Me If You Can by @clottedcreamfudge. It's just one of those fics that does everything right: fun setting (geochaching! Who knew? Certainly not me!), great banter, tension that ramps up, hot getting together (as always). 10/10, def recommend!

⏰ Do you spend more time reading fic, writing fic, or do you do both equally?

These days I spend more time writing, and wishing there were more hours in the day so I could read everything on my Marked for Later (all, uh... 16 pages of it 😬🫣🥴)
