I have very surface level knowledge of DC like I have seen a few of the new movies and that's it. I am really interested in DCxDP fics but I do not know enough about the DC universe and characters to read them, so any suggestions on where to start with DC?

I'm going to assume that you're trying to understand the characterization in DPxDC fics specifically, so this is my kind of rambly thought on the matter:

Since the vast majority of DPxDC fics are actually DPxBatman fics, start by trying the Wayne Family Adventures webcomic. This isn't a main line comic so it's not actually canon, and the characterization is pretty simplified, but it's a decent way to figure out who all these dozens of people with bats on their shirts are.

From there, you might find a character or two that you think is particularly cool. Look up things like "[Character name] essential reading list" or "Best [character name] comics." Read what other people have to say about the character. See if they've been in any of the animated shows. Hopefully from there you'll find more neat things to enjoy.

If you're not interested in the bats at all, there are still plenty of interesting groups. The Supers, the Arrows, the Lanterns, the Flashes, Teen Titans, Young Justice, etc. It really depends on what kind of vibes interest you.

Unfortunately there is no one best way to get into DC. It's a huge setting that's had thousands of authors over the years, and every reader is going to have different tastes. The best advice I can give you is to ask questions. "I see a lot about this character. What are they about? Where can I look for more info?" Fans LOVE to talk about their blorbos.

Yeah! Technically most Tims are prime earth, but most of the time Prime Earth means the most recent adaptations of the storyline or characters.

I think terms like good girl/princess/baby girl feel more comfortable to be addressed as when I'm either deeper in subspace/when I'm feeling more femme on particular days.

it's sort of like a spectrum, like my actual gender [nonbinary but a bit more femme leaning (thank you to my three anklets, and monthly gel manicures) but not necessarily androgynous]. I feel like I'm not one specific gender but I'm not absent of gender either. Most of the time it's femme with a chunk of masc in the mixture.

By extension, certain pet names feel better suited for specific presentations.

When I'm in a needier mood/headspace, I tend to feel more feminine/femme presenting. Thus baby girl and princess are more fitting.

My normal, every day sort of level is that femme with a chunk of masculinity. So specific gendered terms like good girl, princess, baby girl don't feel right or feel right in most stages. Kitten, angel, sweetheart, brat, etc fit better.

If I'm feeling needier, I'll do my best to be forthright with it so you know if it's okay to use gendered terms (usually you might notice that I refer to myself by those gendered terms). If I don't refer to myself with anything, it's a safer bet to use non-gendered terms.

Say for example you drop baby girl out of the blue, I'd be uncomfortable. But if I sent something like, feeling VERY baby girl right now and need a hug, this is a moment where a gendered term is fine.

I usually try to supply the cue with stuff like this because textual based exchanges lack the same physical cues or indicators that an face to face interaction would give.

Today my therapist introduced me to a concept surrounding disability that she called "hLep".

Which is when you - in this case, you are a disabled person - ask someone for help ("I can't drink almond milk so can you get me some whole milk?", or "Please call Donna and ask her to pick up the car for me."), and they say yes, and then they do something that is not what you asked for but is what they think you should have asked for ("I know you said you wanted whole, but I got you skim milk because it's better for you!", "I didn't want to ruin Donna's day by asking her that, so I spent your money on an expensive towing service!") And then if you get annoyed at them for ignoring what you actually asked for - and often it has already happened repeatedly - they get angry because they "were just helping you! You should be grateful!!"

And my therapist pointed out that this is not "help", it's "hLep".

Sure, it looks like help; it kind of sounds like help too; and if it was adjusted just a little bit, it could be help. But it's not help. It's hLep.

At its best, it is patronizing and makes a person feel unvalued and un-listened-to. Always, it reinforces the false idea that disabled people can't be trusted with our own care. And at its worst, it results in disabled people losing our freedom and control over our lives, and also being unable to actually access what we need to survive.

So please, when a disabled person asks you for help on something, don't be a hLeper, be a helper! In other words: they know better than you what they need, and the best way you can honor the trust they've put in you is to believe that!

Also, I want to be very clear that the "getting angry at a disabled person's attempts to point out harmful behavior" part of this makes the whole thing WAY worse. Like it'd be one thing if my roommate bought me some passive-aggressive skim milk, but then they heard what I had to say, and they apologized and did better in the future - our relationship could bounce back from that. But it is very much another thing to have a crying shouting match with someone who is furious at you for saying something they did was ableist. Like, Christ, Jessica, remind me to never ask for your support ever again! You make me feel like if I asked you to call 911, you'd order a pizza because you know I'll feel better once I eat something!!

Edit again: I made an optional follow-up to this post after seeing the responses. Might help somebody. CW for me frankly talking about how dangerous hLep really is.

mini dedication essay to black simmers and ts4 creators below! pls read if you have the chance! <3

this edit is a small homage to afrofuturism and the various unique black hairstyles (and especially the black creators of most of these hairs) that i have downloaded and admired over the years! some of these are old and some of these are new.

to me, afrofuturism means constantly honoring/reclaiming/challenging the past while constantly creating/dreaming of a better society/world/future. a society/world/future that embraces and empowers all of our differences, ingenuity, aspirations, and unique lived/cultural experiences. a society/world/future that does not limit us through the various systems of marginalization and oppression (racism, homophobia, transphobia, fatphobia, sexism, xenophobia, ableism, classism, colorism, etc.) that often affects how we, as black people, live today.

blackness is so diverse and intricate yet it's always been a struggle to find my culture within a game that's known for being so limiting, bland, and extremely eurocentric when it comes to hairstyles, clothing, food traditions/events, etc. black simmers have always had to figure out how to make this game more inclusive and make it resemble either more like how our ancestors lived, how our current lives are, or how we would want our lives (and even our children's lives) to look like in the future no matter how dystopian the real world look and feel now. fortunately, these hairs and their uniqueness bring a huge sense of culture and style to this game. they have always inspired me and made me feel extremely proud to a part of the lovely african diaspora (and the ever-growing black simmer community).

in a way, being a black simmer and cc creator usually means that we are often digitally creating our own worlds as afrofuturists to varying degrees (whether we know it or not) every time we open our game, make our sims, make houses, and/or make black cultural cc. also, now i know that cc making is not easy to do and is extremely time-consuming so this post is also just me giving all black cc creators especially those who create for free their well-deserved flowers! here are some other black cc creators who created cc that have greatly impacted my game since i first started playing sims 4: @/leeleesims1 @/simtric @/hi-land @/yuyulie @/sims4bradshaw @/ebonixsims @/xmiramira @/sheabuttyr @/qwertysims @/oplerims @/sleepingsims @/shespeakssimlish and so many more im forgetting probably (im too shy rn to tag ppl but i greatly appreciate y’all fr i hope y’all telepathically get this message somehow 😭).
