Personal reviews on RSL filmography

Rsl, iI thought it’d be a good idea to record my thought on each films rsl was in, it was something I always wanted to do...

Rsl in total, was starred in (excluding tv series etc) 27-ish films, to be honest, considering his years as an actor(approximately more than 30 years) he wasn’t starred in that many. We all know why lol

Just saying I’m not a film expert, therefore the list is very subjective.

The reviews with trigger warning (r*pe, g*re etc): Tape, Killer: Journal of Murder, A glimpse of hell. Tho in the writing I’ve censored them with * since I don’t feel comfortable saying them here

There isn’t particular spoilers except for dps, tape, and ground control

The favourites (literally my life time films)

Dead Poets Society

I assume many would agree, and as many would have, it was my first ever rsl film, like I was on the plane and it was one of the films they offered, and I was like, oh I think i heard of this, so I watched and instantly loved it. The message is very relevant to this day, the cinematography is very beautiful and somehow nostalgic. I was horrified with Neil’s death. Tbh now I’ve seen too many memes and all kind of things from the fandom (which I’m grateful for!) I thought the heartfelt I once had would deluded a bit, however when I watched it again last April with my family at the cinema and it still moved me very deeply.

The age of Innocence

Okay, unpopular opinion here, I love this so much. It’s my all time favourite rsl film. It even outruns dps tiny winy bit haha. Aside from how he had tiny winy screen time, appearing at the end but the fact that he played quite an important role and him being gorgeous in it just<33 I couldn’t help but smiling! It just the whole film was so much of my cup of tea? The melodrama and the hypocrisy hidden by elegance among the upper social classes in 19th century is just what I needed. The more I watch it, the more I understand the characters and their emotions, it’s one of those films you should keep visit to discover the things you weren’t aware of before. I watched it again this morning and i couldn’t stop thinking about it. However, I know some people find it boring and I understand why, my sister is one of them lol(except for a bit where rsl was in) but i think it’s more complex than what it appears to be at a first glance haha. In conclusion, it became one of my comfort film to watch time to time.

The ones I like<33

Swing kids

At first viewing, I didn’t expected much because it had underwhelming reviews but when I actually saw it, I thought it was quite decent and more and more I watched it, I felt like it was underrated. Yes, I think some directing choices were bit old fashioned and cheesy especially the ending, I’m not saying it was a perfect masterpiece but it deserves more recognition than it has now. Also in spite that there’re some parts being too simplified, it touched on something other films about ww2 normally don’t. It was interesting to see the German perspective on it than Jewish or the allies perspective like many of them does, but of course the latter perspectives matter, it could be argued that they more valid than the former, which partly was where sk criticised for, however, the portrayal of the varied reactions of the German people (in this one particular the teenagers) has its value in their on way. Anyway along side with it, the music and the dance scenes were great, without exaggeration, though Swing kids isn’t my fav, peter’s solo dance scene is my favourite scene in any movies I’ve ever watched. I mean that scene had both visuals and meaning as it demonstrated Peter’s determination as well as resentment with a hitch of unsureness. Rsl acting in that scene was just phenomenal, it’s not about showing off the dancing skills but he portrayed every mixed emotions peter has from his expression and the moves, I just can’t talk about this enough especially this scene was the reason I started fallen for him. lol

Much ado about nothing

Much ado is something I never seen anything like so it was a refreshing exprience. I barely watched Shakespeare on screen kind of thing. Though I felt there were some bits too cheesy for me but they are also the charms in the same time, and the cinematography was pretty also Claudio aka rsl, it was like an official announcement of declaring my worship on this man. Especially it was after SWING KIDSSSS so I couldn’t help it now everyone knows how I fallen for him but no one can blame meeeeee Anyway, it’s a really good film to watch when you want be relaxed with cup of tea maybe hehe

In the gloaming

I heard about it before I watched it, that it’s a heart wrenching, tearful piece, though I didn’t managed to cry, it’s just.... painful and in a way heartfelt. I liked that story telling was calm and collected rather than forcing you to join the sob party, just showing the characters to carry on. And thanks to the great acting from the cast, the characters could be emphasised and understood, personally the older sister was the most relatable character for me, well, eldest complex lol. In short I liked it but it’s not something I would watch it often.

Last days of Disco

As a person who looks at aesthetic in films, I simply enjoyed this for that tbh. I don’t know, I just liked the feeling. But I don’t think it’d be everyone’s cup of tea. I love the day time clothes the girls wore in the film. Tbh I love the music too, I think I love all the films of rsl with music in it. Speaking about rsl, oh rsl, he’s.... His character might be bit unlikable but he was just.... This is why I can’t unlove his characters even the debatable ones<33

They were decent! (I would recommend it)

Married to it

This is the first and last ever attempt of rsl of romcomssss The film itself is cliche to be frank it’s like love actually but it’s about marriage life + it’s not christmas but I like heartfelt cliche stories like this, if anyone also loves this type of story, it’s really worth watching, it’s one of my comfort films, also, rsl is so pretty I mean he always is but to see him being a office man with a baby face made me go awww my baby grew up heheh I wish he did another romcom like this or more preferably, melodramatic romance, I’d have made a shrine of it and worship it every morning lol

The boys next door

I kind of smiled while watching it throughout, if you want something that is heartfelt and touch on some serious topic about social workers and the people with mental disorder, Rsl plays a character who has (I think it was) Schizophrenia and troubled relationship with his father(Deja vu I know) but general atmosphere tend to be quite humourous. I don’t get me wrong, though it’s light hearted, it doesn’t mean they treat the topic in the same way. There’s a scene where the protagonist imagining the one of the characters with the disorder talking eloquently and honourably at the court on the rights and the dignity of the people with mental disorders deserve to/should have and they’re just the same people as the people without mental disorders. It was a powerful scene.

My two loves

Rsl’s first ever screen debut film! Hehe it’s about a woman who is discovering her sexual identity and the conflicts within I personally thought it was fairly sensible depiction but I can’t say for sure whether it was accurate or else, since I don’t think it’s my place to say it:) But if you’re interested, it’s on YouTube, you can just search for it or go to this post I made. Fun fact: since it was his debut film, it credits him as he’s real name, Robert L. Leonard, I just find it amusing haha

Tape

It’s another type of film I don’t encounter that often, I enjoyed it, especially with Neil and Todd’s reunion lol. Rsl mentioned how he enjoyed it because it felt like doing a play, my first impression was that the structure is like a play, though the camera work made me quite dizzy haha. But the dialogues, the acting, I think it was quite spot on. Especially the human contradictions and hypocrisy side of it. The most people assume the baddie in the film is Jon the character rsl played and has a distaste for him. I mean how can anyone love a character who is accused of r*pe but to be honest, Vincent for me seemed just as problematic, both of them are hypocrites for sure in their own different ways but in the end we can’t be sure what’s really the truth or not. It’s about the vagueness, and phychology and the uncertainty from the audience on who to believe(well, myself included, most would trust on Amy’s claims since she’s the victim in the accusation, but by her denying the claims, making everything way unclear,) so I don’t know. I don’t really have an opinion haha tho I don’t believe nothing happened because Amy denied so, even Umma Thurman who played her, said that her interpretation was that Amy lied. I felt it’s endless rabbit hole this film. Sorry I couldn’t worded it better.

My best friend is a Vampire

It’s cringey and weird but there’re odd charm to it. Vampire rsl’s so cute as well.... and I think it’s the only film, he acted kind of flirty ? So for that itself I’d like to appreciate itttt And it’s so 80s/90s, like it has general odd nostalgia like all films from that age has. I saw a Korean blog about rsl films and this was mentioned, that- they said- it’s a bible of rsl’s adorableness and I think that sum up the film perfectly.

Mr&Mrs Bridge

Before this was in ‘I mean it was fine” category, but I watched it again and now I want to retract my statement lol Still isn’t my fav but I noticed how delicately depicted each characters are, Mr and Mrs Bridge in particular. This film is alternatively about the changes in the young generation regarding liberty, feminism, free expression especially on sex. It’s in the perspective of the bridges, the mother and father who is old fashioned and conservative (as it was normal in their previous generation) and the children who are the young generation, and the misunderstanding and conflicts between them. After all it all happened not only because of the difference but also the lack of communication, which rsl emphasised in his interviews. I found it interesting that they made it seems like the Bridges truly existed with the video footage and (with the ending) describing what happened to each family member in text with photos. When I watched it at first I was really confused if it was based on a real life. I think what they wanted to suggest was that the Bridges every typical American family at the time. It was something everyone was going through. I said previously I didn’t get why Rsl’s character (the youngest in the Bridges) treated his mother so coldly. Honestly I do get why, but I guess I felt so bad so the mother haha

I mean it was fine

The safe passage

It was okay but to be honest it didn’t stood out to me. It was okay. The story, the characters weren’t that interesting. I wish they extended it longer to go depth with their family relationship or something.

A painted house

I find it likeable, it has a chill, old folk story vibe, but same as previous one. it didn’t really stand out except for shirtless rsl, do close ups you cowards

Bluffing it

I was really fond of the premise of this film and I think it has great intention. It was specifically made to promote the awareness of illiteracy and how to get support. However, I don’t get the reason of Jack the protagonist’s illiteracy. Unless, it was common occurrence in America at the time, I feel like it’d have been more convincing if he was in poor family hood, so there was no time to learn at school due to working at young age...? I mean, just finding it hard to believe he passed the high school just like that, I mean the teachers or anyone should have noticed it, maybe I’m missing something here but it seemed unlikely to me.

Ground control

Again, I liked the message, as it depicted how frightening and difficult job the ground controller is, by one mistake could take away the lives of hundreds, especially as someone who goes on planes a lot... But it was quite cliche throughout, I just couldn’t get engaged to it. But I do admit at the end when the protagonist runs off to the landing zone see the pilot who he had just saved, they acknowledged each other and have eye contacts was truly wholesome. Rsl as cocky, bad boy was such a icing on the cake, I loved it so much. Chewing gum in every scene lol I hope he plays these sort of characters more often. I saw someone criticising him saying he has narrow spectrum of just playing nice boy roles like Neil but I really wanted to debunk the narrative and this could be one of the examples!

Chelsea walls

I knew that this has split reviews but nonetheless I think worth to watch it, 1. Ethan and rsl re union, 2. Ethan is the directer of the film and rsl sing in it. But I have to say, it’s one of those hard to follow art indie film so I couldn’t finish it on one go. I feel like I have to devour it over and over again. Maybe later on I grow fond of it more lol But his character, I loved him so much. He’s just has everyone don’t touch me, I’m a cocky artist vibe, there’s a scene where his annoying friend annoying him and he looks up and says: ‘Fck off’. Absolute golddddd not to mention he sings and plays guitar so beautifully<333

Well... it’s not my cup of tea

The Manhattan project

I don’t think the film it self was that bad, it’s about high school boy who find out the existence of some nuclear energy research lab and stole the energy to make his own nuclear bomb. I just don’t get the thinking process of the protagonist. It really frustrated me. He seemed apathetic and unlikable I disliked him throughout and that’s why I didn’t really enjoyed it. I mean it has humour and ridiculous storyline might be humorous to some. But more importantly there was such little screen time for rsl!! LIKE WHY? WHY PEOPLE?? HE LOOKS LIKE A FRESH HUMAN MOCHI!!! It makes me soooo mad to think about it

Killer: Journal of Murder

Well, first of all, it had a lot of graphic things than I imagined, brutally murd*red bodies, execution, and r*pe scene, gosh I was strucken by it when I saw that, I had to skipped that scene. It’s based on a real event and a real criminal called Carl Panzram, so if you’re aware of it, it might be more intriguiging to see. But personally for me... meh, I don’t think directing was good as it failed to portray it enough for me to comprehend fully.

A Glimpse of Hell

This is also based on a true event of a tragic accident in the us battleship in Iowa in 1989. They shows tragedy lin a blunt, brutal way by showing horribly damaged bodies of the soldiers torn into pieces, all the horrid things directly so be warned about that. I was quite alarmed because i didn’t expect to see it haha there’s no much to say. The film quality was so so for me. I feel their approach wasn’t appropriate, they were clearly trying to make it dramatic which is fine but in a melodramatic emotional way. It didn’t work because first, there aren’t enough portrayal of the characters for me to get attached, secondly it added the unnecessary exaggeration it prevented me from being emotionally involved or even to think about it. In my opinion, I think it’d have been better if they made it more restrained, dry, focus on the accuracy. For example like 1987 or Zodiac, I mean both of them has dramatic elements since they’re not a documentary but they were not overdone, in a contrary added emphasis to their message/conclusion. I know it’s easier said than done but it was something I consistently felt during it.

Standoff

Haha... it’s very peculiar... the directing is off and it just weird. I knew it was bad already but I watched it because rsl as a cop with gunssssssss just... so rare and just.... something else. There’s no way of me missing that seriously. Tbh him doing an action stunt isn’t what I imagine when it comes to him and there’s really any actions scenes anyway but it really was something. Like the character he played here really became my soft spot Hehehehe he was pretty and plus, tbh it’s kind of film I’d make fun of while watching so everything was (alomst) forgivable. There is a recent thing I think about, since this is about a cult, I kind of hope he’d at some day play a role like Eli Sunday from There will be blood: a manipulative, deceitful and maddened priest with twisted faith. Though Paul Dano did a grand job, the idea was in my head the whole time. Well, it’s a shame he wasn’t any of those here lol

Driven

From what I seen, the majority of people seem to unanimously hate this film, and after watching it I became one of those ppl. At least Standoff could be make fun of and rsl held gunssss but this...... I want to say so many things... I feel like they should have chose either fancy, fast paced, thrilling racing film or detailed depiction of emotions/relationships with the racers and people involved in it, I know both can be done, but I think that was outside of their ability, but since they tried to do that at once, it became a mess that doesn’t go either way. And the characters, any of them, including rsl’s are narrow or impossible to understand. I mean rsl did great himself, it was not about acting, the problem lies on the script and editing in my opinion. Also there were so many unnecessary characters made me question of their existence. Luckily rsl’s character isn’t one of them, however because of them, he had to squeeze in and unable to elaborate, which is a shame as he was an interesting character and someone rsl rarely plays; a arrogant and opportunist agent/brother of the protagonist, who would do anything for success... ha.... whyyyyy

This is it. If I watch other stuff I might add to it in the future. Overall, I know I’m biased but I do like His filmography, I do have appreciations in every one of them in different way to the good ones to bad. He may have disagree, but I love his acting on screen, well, I barely seen him on stage (crying)

Edit: as some of you could see, I’ve edited this over and over again haha elaborating on thing or the contrary. I can say with a glimpse of hell I practically managed to watch every rsl films out there lol except for the i inside and the short film he did called a dog race in Alaska. But with the former I’m not interested and already know the storyline, and the latter is just impossible to find, trust me I did my best;;

So to sum up: I HAVE MASTERED THE RSL FILMOGRAPHY!

There are just few words about “Frozen 2″ and two sisters...

Hey, well...Here i want to share my minds after watching beautiful movie - "Frozen 2"

First of all, I want to say that i'm big fan of "Elsanna" ship, i have so many arts, I've read so much fanfics and working on my own fanfic. But this post is not like "Come on, just do Elsanna canon! They are My OTP<3". I really love their relationship in the both movies, but...all fans always want more for their ships, ya know :D In this post I’m not gonna insult other ships. All fans can ship whatever they want. Respect others. Neutrality is the first step for piece...

Most importantly I wanted to say "Thank you, Disney, "Frozen 2" was beautiful! I've got what I needed!" We saw very deep relationship, there were not romantic things ofc, but just sister's warm hugs, holding hands, tears, looks, very big self-sacrifices especially from Anna's side. In this part Kristoff's role has grown, but still he is lost in the background of the sisters. “Frozen” was better in that time, because it was nonsense, and now we’ve got just a good sequel.

Now I’m thinking that Disney probably Made Elsa and Anna sisters at the start because it was too much if they were just 2 girls, loving each other (at least in the first part of Movie in 2013, coz they probably wasn't sure their movie could have so much fans and views!) And they decided to create just different kind of Love. True sister's love. But seriously, be clear and honest, they are more than sisters. They are soulmates, two parts of whole and everyone noticed it in Frozen and in Frozen 2 as well. I think Disney understood it too and Anna’s words: “Two sisters one head!”. And sometimes I regret that you chose that way, Disney...

It could be very grate tandem with two gorgeous girls from different worlds or kingdoms, loving each other and without some guy in the background who will be the husband of one of them someday. Remember that his kiss didn't work on Anna, it wasn't true love! Then why and for what you made him Anna's husband? Because Princess without Prince is not good enough for Disney Universe? Srsly...If you chose other way It could have big influence on homophobic community...And don't dare say that "This movie for kids, they don't need to know about gays". There is no one difference at all between 2 woman's/2 mans's kiss and kiss between woman and man. I'm saying it coz we saw and not just one kiss (its not true love, don't forget!) between Anna and Kristoff and Anna and Hans. Then why THIS is okay for you, homophobes? And kiss between Elsa and Honeymaren (just for example) is not?! Kids must to know, that they can love whoever they want, all kinds of love are right!

But you know, after so many years with tag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend (I taked part in in it too ofc...) in Twitter, ppl did a great joob and it had affected on Disney, now we have at least the chance for seeing first officially lesbian princess from Disney University in the "Frozen 3". Yes, next part is better for creating story about this. And I don't understand ppl who wanted see Elsa's romantic interest in this part of movie? We needed to know more things about Elsa, her magic, we needed to get important answers and Disney did it! We got very beautiful, strong, independent Elsa, founding her true essence and very pretty, and precious Anna who can be so brave and can't live without her guiding star - sister Elsa (remember scene in the cave and her song!) Just look at Elsa here, she is really beautiful! No one can argue with it.

Btw Disney did very good job and create magnificent songs in this movie, my favourites are "Show yourself" and "Into the unknown". Singing it day by day haha, very like Idina Menzel voice^^ I also don't mind if Elsa will have no romantic interest, and will be alone. She is a goddess after all she did :) And I'm also ok with lesbian Elsa even if with Honeymaren, but I would like it more if it was Anna of course, hehehe. I mean, if they weren't sisters, but I think it's too late to doing smth about it, create new story and saying "Guys, they are not sisters actually" (but who knows...?) At least thx for small Kristoff’s role in this movie...I don’t wanna see how far their relationship with Anna are going. No, Kristoff is a good character but this movie not about typical prince and princess.

Ok, just lets be grateful for existence of this beautiful movies and these two precious girls. <3

Anyway, I recommended this movie for everyone who aren’t seeing this yet, and I, as fan of Elsanna, liked all Elsanna’s moments in the second part of movie! I’m crushed oh these sisters even more!

My year in dramaland pt. 1

Korean dramas I watched this year:

He is psychometric: I’ve always been a fan of GOT7, but in the last couple of years, I detached myself from Kpop. I still read the news and followed the groups that interested me. Just not like I used to. When I decided to give this drama a watch, Park Jinyoung stood out to me the most and I said “Wait a minute! Has he always been this good at acting?” I went back to watch his videos and listen to GOT7′s music and now I freaking LOVE THEM. I even went to their world tour this year when they made a stop on my country (And it was amazing, believe me!) But you’re here to hear about the drama, that I loved until episode 12, when the show decided to go dark real fast and break my heart (and the male lead’s) in the process. The drama did not lost me, I was in too deep, but the change in its tone and specifically the one big twist, were too much and made me unable to watch anything dark this year. But more on to that later, hehehe.

Would I recommend it? Absolutely. I was actually going through a drama slump when I found this drama and it got me out of there completely. The drama has enough of mistery, fantansy and romance to keep you glued to the screen. As a viewer, you get high on it and love it. And our hero is lovable yet unbelievable dumb. But there was a big twist (that in retrospective was not that big and actually, kind of expected) near the end. All I can tell you is that there is a happily ever after that heals you and leaves you with hope. Also, the four leads’ acting is really good.

*Note: Now that we’re in the last days of the year, I’m seeing a lot of people forgot about this drama and a lot more didn’t even know about it. Trust me, this is such an underrated drama, and so worth watching. You need to see it.

Her private life: After that last drama, I wanted a fluffy romcom. And my sister convinced me this was what I needed, though I went into this drama sceptic, because let me tell you, my sister does not watch romcoms. But she is (and I am) a fan of Park Minyoung. Oh, and she fell for Lion (Kim Jaewook) in a heartbeat. Also, the crazy antics of crazy fangirl PMY got me feeling embarrased and somehow asking if I was also a bit too much like her.

Would I recommend it? I liked it a lot for what it was. A classic romcom. I still find weird that PMY switched to this genre, but she is killing it. Maybe she got tired of crying so much in other dramas and sometimes not getting satisfying endings. If you want to laugh a lot, fall in love with one of the most unproblematic and non-toxic and higly attractive OTPs of 2019, and as a kpop stan, you want to feel identified, this is the drama for you.

The secret life of my secretary: This one was so cute!! There are two things I completely LOVED about this drama: Do Minik And Veronica Park!! Ooof! I almost wish she was the lead, because she was so entertaining to watch. *chef’s kiss* And such an empowering woman. And while the romance between Do Minik and her secretary was fluffy, I was so conflicted for most of the drama because she was literally deceiving him and making him confused. And she dared to feel pity for herself because her boss liked the other version of her, too. ARRRHHGG. I love Jin Kijoo, I do. But even if her character was supposed to be the nice and sweet orphan girl who had to suport her brother and sister, she is still a very bad example of how a “good” person should be (i.e. impersonating and deceiving others is BAD, kids).

Would I recommend it? This one is hard. But YES, if you don’t mind too much the lying female lead (girl, I understood when you did it one or two times, but as much as you did? Hell). The big reasons are Do Minik and my Veronica. I love them both a whole lot. They were the best part and the ones who made me forget about the awful bits. I hope these two actors can do a drama together in the future.

The beauty inside: Yeah. I know. This one is from 2018. Better late than never, no? I watched this with my sister. The reality is that we just wanted to watch something together and this was my sister’s choice. It was fun in the beggining, melo in the end. Which always happens in romcoms. Nothing new. I loved the original movie this was based on and I actually liked all the extra things they added in. In reality, it was a very different story with barely any similiraties. But that was good.

Would I recommend it? Did not love it as much as other people did, but if you want to watch something with a different sense of humor, one that is actually clever and sassy, and sometimes a bit dark, I’d say yes. Not the biggest fan of the two leads chemistry, but I liked the devotion they had for each other and acceptance for the other’s condition, which was only possible because they were dealing with very scary things. They understood and complemented each other. Also, most fans seemed to love the relationship between the second leads. They were fun.

Moment at Eighteen: In my opinion, the best high school drama I’ve ever seen (since Sassy GoGo, I still love you). The main leads’ story was enough to keep me around each week, with their own stuggles, sweet puppy love and aspirations for the future. But the side characters were also well developed and their stories were interesting as well. They were all a bunch of kids who were dealing with an awful lot and you just couln’t help but feel for them. It reminded me a lot of my high school years and how much I feel pressured of making the right decisions. Very nostalgic. Also, their homeroom teacher is the best teacher I’ve seen in a drama, hands down. He cared for his students a lot more than even their parents.And he had his own little sweet romance.

Would I recommend it? If you love Ong Seong Wu, do not even think about it. LOL I can’t wait to see what project he chooses next, he surprised me in the best way. Other reason to watch? There’s a gay character, with a respectful and sweet story. Another? If you want to watch a well written and character driven high school drama, this goodie is for you.

Week 3 - The Week that Reading Overtook Everything

I read a lot this week. So much that I didn’t really have time for anything else. (As you’ll shortly see below).

This week is making me realise that beyond just the limited time thing, it is also really challenging to divide my attention. Being deeply immersed in reading makes it difficult for me to pause and watch a Netflix series because I keep thinking of the characters I’ve been reading about. And vice versa. Can I train this mental dexterity? Is this a sign of aging? FUCK I’M GETTING OLD.

Deets below the cut because I think it affects my Tumblr aesthetics with such a long block of text. Hehehe.

Reads This Week

Kim Ji-young, Born 1981 by Cho Nam-ju (5/2021) This read more like social commentary than an actual novel. I am thankful I don’t face any major gender inequality in Singapore but there are still things I can relate to. Societal norms that dictate the roles of women and men and the struggles that women go through to keep up with these expected roles. Mostly those revolving around being a good mother, wife and daughter-in-law. Then you have the relatively new career-woman role. And so much of these roles are incongruent with each other.

Overall the writing is very sterile. No frills, very factual, bordering on being report-like. And.... very depressing. I still enjoyed it though. Because it talks about a very real issue and it made me thankful that I don’t have these unsurmountable issues to deal with in Singapore. The ending was genius, like a stab right in the heart.

I don’t know if guys would be able to appreciate the point of the book as much as a girl would. Maybe that’s why S.Korea was so divided by the movie. Still messed up though, S.Korea really needs to get its shit together.

Diary of a Murderer: And Other Stories by Kim Young-ha. (6/2021) This is a collection of 4 short stories. The first is quite long, a novella really. And it is the best in the collection. Tells the tale of a serial killer with Alzheimer's. It’s SO DARK. I legit got chills reading it. Top notch writing. The rest of the stories were a bit strange, as though Kim wrote them while he was high on drugs, in a bad way. Particularly the 4th story. So enjoyment of this book looks like a inverse linear graph, for me at least.

But the strength of the first story makes up for it, so overall I still enjoyed it.

I realise I did 3 Korean writers in a row. Hehehe. Quite impressed to be honest but I think I need to lay off the Korean writers for a bit. Translated reads all have a slight awkwardness to the language which takes a bit of getting use to.

Shades of Grey: The Road to High Saffron by Jasper Fforde (7/2021) All you idiots who read Fifty Shades of Grey obviously picked up the wrong book. THIS is the Shades of Grey you should be reading!!

Shades of Grey is BRILLIANT. When I finished it, I felt so lost, unsure of what to do with myself and grieving that it ended. It is so funny, so witty, so punny, so clever, so dark but so fun. I wanted to tell everyone about it, make everyone I know read it so we could talk about it. SoG is what you’d get if Hitchhiker’s Guide and 1984 made a baby, the best possible, perfect little baby.

There is a lot of world building in SoG. And you’re not eased into it. Fforde jumps right in and it can get quite confusing with new terms and mentioned-in-passing events and there were parts where I felt like I was missing something, as though Fforde was trying to make some smart pop culture or literary reference but I just didn’t get it because I was stupid. (I do think SoG would benefit from a re-read.)

Beyond the excellent world building, I think Fforde is genius at holding suspense. There is a general sense of foreboding and mystery that hangs in the air. You know something is off, something is wrong but it’s subtle, camouflaged by Fforde’s excellent wit, hidden by bright characters in saturated primary and secondary colours. I wish Fforde would hurry write the sequels, it’s been 10 bloody years, I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS TO EDDIE AND JANE.

The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith (8/2021) I am reading this book completely blind. I have no idea what the heck it is about and picked it up solely because a good friend recommended it and I trust her taste.

I’m about 10% in and... Tom Ripley is a fuck boy. He has major problems. -_- Haven’t read enough to make major comment but it’s a good change from SoG. It’s set in our world and I like how I’m focusing on characterisation when reading, and am not having to divide my attention to also understand the world the characters are in. (there’s joy in that too but SoG really took it out of me.)

Good reads this week! Am looking forward to more reads in the coming week!

Writes this Week

I wrote a flash fiction piece this week called She Woke Up Like This and spent a bit of time editing and refining it with feedback from AG. It was so enjoyable! Wrote it in a flash of inspiration and it’s the first piece I’ve written with an actual real life muse. I’m proud of my flash baby and hmmm I hope to have some good news soon. :)

I’ve been meaning to work on an idea I got some months back but just can’t figure out the story. I have the first line though, “My parents are not my parents, of that I’m sure.” I think this will be the piece I chisel out this coming week.

Watches This Week

The Uncanny Counter - Up to episode 14 Argh, hate waiting for new episodes to be released! Was just telling D that we should wait for the last episode to be out next week before finishing the last 2 episodes because I’m sure the penultimate episode will be major cliffhanger-y.

Enjoying it still! Though there’s this one episode where an idiot small boy foils the Counters’ plan by being an idiotic piece of shit and then it hit me THE ACTOR IS THE SAME ONE FROM SWEET HOME. THE IDIOT BOY THAT KEEPS CRYING AND BEING FUCKING IRRITATING.

Argh. If ever I’m in a hodgepodge mix gang that needs to fight for survival, I’m leaving all idiotic Korean children to die first.

I didn’t watch much this week because I was reading a lot. SoG really sucked me in. Am planning to start on Busted (I watched season 1 years ago and IT WAS SO LOLTASTIC) and have heard good things about Lupin. Oh and Flower of Evil solely for Lee Joonki’s beautiful face.

Listens this Week

I haven’t been listening to anything majorly new this week, been just relying on Spotfiy’s Daily Mixes. Also enjoyed the Calming Acoustic playlist on Spotify but that’s because it’s great reading music.

I just found out OCBC has a frickin podcast on Spotify. What. -_-

January is nearly ending!!! Gosh, time really flies. Hope everyone’s January has been good so far!

ANIME’s WE LOVE TO WATCH!

1 3D GIRLFRIEND

I have not watched this anime yet and this is the first time I heard about this anime! King told me that he loved watching this because a weird otaku nerd who loves to watch anime has a very beautiful and normal girlfriend. HAHAHA! Tsutsui Hikari (The boy in the pic) is a weird otaku nerd that loves to watch anime (LIKE KING XD HAHAHAHA). But at the start of this anime, the episode one, It’s his first time being late at school so that’s why he has to clean the swimming pool of their school. He’s not alone though, He’s with a beautiful girl named Igashi Iroha (the girl in the pic) that he didn’t know existed XD. And there’s the awkward situation! YEEEEY! (liek being with someone you don’t know and there’s just the awkward silence XD) When they finished cleaning, Igashi Iroha confessed that she wants to be Tsutsui Hikari’s girlfriend. AND THAT’S HOW TSUTSUI HIKARI’S LIFE BEGINS (WHEN WILL MY LIFEEE BEGIIIN - TANGLED) You know, I fell inlove with the art style so I’m like I wanna watch it right now XD

2 JOJO’S BIZZARE ADVENTURE: GOLDEN WIND (PART 7 OF JOJO’S BIZZARE ADVENTURE)

KONO DIO DAAAAAAA!!!! A very famous line in Jojo’s Bizzare adventure (meaning it was with me, Dio!). And it also has became a meme in the otaku world XD. King told me that the main character here is Giorno Giovanna (the one who wears pink in the pic) who is the son of DIo (The enemy of the protagonist in part 1, 2 and 3). Jotaro Jostar is the one who killed Dio But found out that Dio had a son. And then Koichi (Part 6 of Jojo’s Bizarre adventure) was ordered by Jotaro Joestar to determine if Giorno Giovanna was a good or bad man. But you know, Giorno Giovanna is really a good man. He wants to be a gangster in Italy to stop all the bad things that people do and that is hapening in there. The cool thing about Giorno Giovanna is that whe he uses his stand, he can turn objects into animals! And then King also told me that he’s still waiting for another new episode of this anime every saturday XD

3 MY ROOMATE IS A CAT

“This anime is reallyyyy cute! It’s a very nice anime because this anime has two stories. Haru (The Cat) and the main character who is Subaru Mikazuki who’s a bookworm. He loves reading books and also he is the author of Polaris? (I’m not quite sure cuz I forgot it T^T sorry T^T but the book he made is Polaris). He is the same as the cat in the first episode, Having their hard times in life. Subaru Mikazuki’s parents died in an accident while the cat is having a hard time in his life cuz they don't have a home. Those two met in the cemetery where Subaru Mikazuki’s parents were buried. That's where they met and his life changed a little by little in every episode. So it's kinda heart warming, touching, and an emotinal anime.” - King

4 THAT TIME I GOT REINCARNATED AS A SLIME

“This anime is really cool! I mean, the main character died and Reincarnated as a Slime but he is MIGHT AND POWERFUL (like whaaat? a mighty and powerful man dide and reincarnated as a slime?). But sad to say, he died as virgin xD HAHAHA! I don’t know but he is nearly 35-40 years old. He died because his coworker showed his girlfriend to him and then there's a criminal that’ll gonna stab the girl so he saved the girl but he got stabbed and died. Then he was reincarnated as a slime and adventurer on a new world. Which is one of my dreams. hehehe. To die and be rencarnated to a different world! That’ll be the craziest and amazing to happen in my life! I’ll suggest you dudez to watch this because it’s so cool!” - King

“This anime is same as “That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime” because they both died and reincarnated. But in a different way. The main character here is a normal sale's man which is an aethist. He only follows the law. And because of that, there was a man that he got killed by pushing him in the trail. Then the time began to stop and a god or demon (I’m not sure sorry I forgot T^T) appeared and talked to him that he will be reincarnated again to believe in god. He called that god or demon “Being X” which is he died after they’re done talking. He turned into a baby girl tanya. She did the same thing in his old world which is like cheating because he is in advance learning than the soldiers. when she was 9 years old she killed many enemies. That is really cool! She is a 9 year old reincarnated hooman. A girl to be exact. He have a one battalion. This anime is really great! Also, I'm waiting on the movie of this because the last episode of this anime is they’re done in war but there’s still enemies left that is going to attack them. This one is really worth it to watch.” - King

6 THE PET GIRL OF SAKURASOU

A friend of mine recommended me this anime becuase he knew what I want XD (Its hard to explain XD). He knew what style I would love to watch :>. Anyways! This anime is one of the animes that I love! it has a very unique story that captivated me. An emotionless famous painter, A nerd programmer, a chic boy script writer, a very cheerful animator, a clueless boy and an actress got together in a house called Sakurasou with a landlady who’s a teacher at their school. The main character here is Sorata Kanda (The guy who has a brown hair in the pic and the clueless boy). He was kicked out of the dorms in their school because he loves to take home street cats and was forced to stay at Sakurasou with weird beings. one by one he knew their personalities and talents which made him sad because he realized he doesn’t have anything. He doesn’t have any talents. He learns a lot through the episode and faced challenges and hardships and sometimes he wants to give up (like we people think). But because of his weird roomates, he faced it proudly. It’s not your typical story line but try to watch this for you to know ;)

7 ANCIENT MAGU’S BRIDE

This is a dark fantasy romance anime. That girl in the pic named Chise Hatori falls inlove with Elias Ainsworth which is the skull lookin’ fae hooman (fae = fairy). Yes it is mah bro. She’s his fiance (Or what we call future bride *ehem* *ehem* :>). Anyways. It started by Chise Hatori selling herself to an auction and Elias Ainsworth won that auction. She selled herself because she LITERALLY HAS A VERY DARK AND DEPRESSING LIFE. Elias Ainsworth on the other hand, won the auction and really wanted to get her because she’s a Sleigh Beggy, a special magus who can draw magic from her surroundings and within herself causing a strain on the body (magus = a sorcerer). WAIT! I JUST LITERALLY AND SERIOUSLY REMEMBERED SOMETHING RIGHT AT THIS MOMENT OR HOUR (Feb. 16 2019 3:23 pm)!! AM I A SPOILER NOW BECAUSE I GIVE INSIGHTS ABOUT THE ANIMEEESSS? IMMA SHOOKT! I HATE PEOPLE SPOILING STUFF XD So I’ll just end it here and have a short description to the last 3 animes that I love to watch. SORRY YA’LL T^T. This is an anime me and my sister watched. It’s about adults who sometimes hate being adults and is confused on how to love someone. Just a bunch of otaku adults dealing with life XD. It’s really fun to watch so watch it right now! ;)

9 MAQUIA: WHEN THE PROMISED FLOWERS BLOOM

Officially abbreviated as SAYOASA. This anime has a very unique story line! I don’t know how to explain it without me spoiling you dudez but hey, watch it XD IMMA SORYY T^T IMMA TERRIBLE HOOMAN FOR NOT GIVING A BEAUTIFUL DESCRIPTION T^T

10 ANGEL OF DEATH

A young girl named Rachel Gardner wakes up without any memories and finds herself trapped in a building with several floors. She meets the serial killer Isaac Foster who tries to kill her but fails. Later on Rachel no longer wishes to live and asks Isaac if he could kill her. He agrees to kill her as long as she helps him escape the building. So Isaac and Rachel has to try to “beat” all the different floors and find a way to escape. If you want some gore and dark themes You should definitely watch this!!!! I love the concept of this anime, since its not like any other anime out there in short UNIQUE!!!

But I like animals, so probably a career where I could work with and own them would be nice...?

number of blankets i sleep with: When it’s cold in the winter it’s a sheet, then a thick blue blanket, then over top a giant thin-ish blanket with the Hogwarts seal on it. In the summer I ditch the HP blanket.

1. What is your favorite genre?

I’ll try pretty much any fiction, but I usually prefer mysteries or fantasy. I do read and have read a lot of “literature,” but I greatly prefer escapism.

2. How many books did you read this year?

According to Goodreads, 82 BUT a bunch of those are manga and at least 12 are individual chapters of manga that are released monthly, so that artificially boosted my count. I’ve actually been reading through old manga that I own that I haven’t read in years, and it’s fun, along with scoring free ebooks on Amazon and my library.

3. Favorite book of all time?

Aaah, this is impossible! Growing up, it was The Black Stallion, The Black Stallion Mystery and Man O’War by Walter Farley. As a teenager, it was the Dragonlance saga by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman and The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy. As a young woman, The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan. Then The Mummy Case by Elizabeth Peters and One For the Money by Janet Evanovich. The Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett. Now, I’m old and I just don’t know. I DO know that I’m more discriminating. I try a lot of free Kindle books on Amazon, and I’m teaching myself it’s OK to stop reading and delete one if it’s awful. And a lot are.

4. The book you never thought you would love but adore so much?

The Harry Potter series. A friend loaned me the first four forever ago, and I liked them and I got around to reading the rest eventually as they came out. I enjoyed them and cried at all the appropriate spots, but I didn’t really fall in love with them until this summer. I listened to all seven audiobooks while I was cleaning out houses, and they just blew me away. Not just her world-building and character-making, but her language and the style of her writing is just incredible. They sound really, really lovely read aloud, which isn’t always the case for a lot of novels. I’ve since re-listened to the first six and they only get better on repeat.

5. The book you thought you would love but ended up hating?

A Game of Thrones.

6. Your favorite book written in your mother tongue?

I feel very spoiled because I can only speak and read English and we have a lot of choices.

7. The writer you would die to meet?

The two writers I would most love to meet are dead—Sir Terry Pratchett and Elizabeth Peters. The other is J.K. Rowling. I wouldn’t be able to say anything; I would just want to sit there and bask in her presence (and hope some of her talent and genius would rub off onto me).

8. The TV/movie adaptation you hate?

I finally got around to watching the Harry Potter movies this fall, and wow, The Goblet of Fire was bad and not true to the spirit of the book at all.

9. The TV/movie adaptation you love with all your heart?

The Princess Bride! I didn’t care for the book, but maybe that was because I already had the movie memorized by the time I read it.

10. The book you wished was adapted on screen (with all the details in, all the right characters depiction, perfect settings…do I need to go on?)

I would LOVE to see The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan done on premium cable. There is plenty of material in 14 completed books, a cast of a thousand characters, all the sex and violence you can shake a stick at. It would be a challenge, but if they could get it right and all the right actors and special effects, it would be AMAZING.

11. Which book would you recommend to your best friend?

I have recommended Elizabeth Peters’ Amelia Peabody Emerson series to so many people. I love it, especially the early books, with all my heart. Lately, I’ve been recommending Howard of Warwick’s novels. He’s a self-pub author on Amazon, and his books literally crack me up. They’re a touch of Terry Pratchett mixed with Monty Python, and I don’t know, his sense of humor strikes me perfectly (y’all know I’ve got a terrible sense of dad humor). He has a series about a medieval monk, Brother Hermitage, who accidentally becomes the King’s Investigator (he literally coins the term “Investigator” from the Latin...it’s a running joke) and the hijinks that occur as he walks around England trying to avoid having to solve murders. He’s accompanied by Wat the weaver who would probably still be able to make a fortune weaving his dirty porno tapestries. Howard really manages to mix in a lot of historical fact and show how everyday life was in 1066 along with the crazy antics of Hermitage and company.

12. Do you read fanfic? If yes, in which fandom?

Moi? Fanfic? What is this fanfic of which you speak? >_>

Hehehe, if I’m interested in a movie or show, I usually got to AO3 right after I watch it and see about fic. I subscribe to a bunch of favorite authors in so many fandoms. And there are the old anime/manga fandoms that I think about once or twice a year and check in on. Last night, it was Bleach.

13. Which is your favorite fanfic of all times?

I LOVE the writer daegaer on LJ! Everything that she writes—regardless of whether I know the source material or not—is brilliant. I always rank her among my top authors of all time. Her Weiss Kreuz stuff is about 1000 times better than that anime ever was. She is just the writer I will always aspire (and fail) to be!

14. Which wonderful (fanfic) writer did you discover this year?

I’ve gotten to know more DVD writers which is so exciting! :D

15. Who is your book OTP?

Amelia Peabody and Radcliffe Emerson FOREVER

16. And your book NOTP?

Ramses Emerson and Nefret NOPE

17. What are you reading currently?

I’m still trying to get through The Sword and the Dragon by M.R. Mathias (it’s my third try, and I really want to like it because there’s a ton of potential but argh this author tries to weave too many characters and too many subplots and it’s super-confusing. I’m 35% in, and if I can’t get through it this time, I give up.) Also, I just started the manga series Tactics, one of my favorites that I own and I haven’t re-read in years. It’s a lovely story with really beautiful art.

ahh no!! evergreen trees are cute but the shifting colors... 🥺 also yeah! i used to jump into piles a lot as a kid. i was just messy it was my favorite thing. since we don’t really get ‘winter’ like that anymore fall usually drags out which means a long time with beautiful leaves and i just love it. i go to an old campus (think hogwarts-esque) and they have these ivy leaf all over the buildings making them stark red. it’s beautiful.

god i speak like four languages!! i live in sweden though, and listen to podcasts in swedish. i wish you understood it because i’d recommend you so much, hehe. i agree! hearing about cases in your vicinity is always so bizarre? yet cool? the host is great like i said perfect accent. dude, you probably do have a strong accent you’re just used to it.. omg 😳 every time someone says that they usually do, haha. i’m incredibly jealous bc the aus accent is just perfect imo.

if you don’t have netflix anymore about 40 episodes of conan are available for free on crunchyroll, did a little research and found that out. it’s the first 40 which are also my faves. just in case you’ll get around to watching it. ❣️
